- 0:00We're back, it's inside Maine. We're spending the day talking
- 0:04to candidates for governor. You know, Jeremy, usually this
- 0:06time I've had maybe one guest. So far, I've had two.
- 0:08We're going to do 2 more this segment, another the next.
- 0:11It's a lot. It's a lot.
- 0:12But that's what we do here inside Maine.
- 0:14That's how we stay at the forefront of political
- 0:16consciousness. One programming note, Hannah
- 0:18Pingree wasn't able to confirm for today.
- 0:20So you can catch her on. Next week when Sean Moody is the
- 0:23host, he'll speak to Hannah Pingree.
- 0:24So she was the one candidate we couldn't schedule during the
- 0:27times I was hosting. But you can catch her with Sean.
- 0:29Sean sent me text to thank me for booking him a guest with
- 0:32whom he vehemently disagrees. So very pleased, though to be
- 0:37able to bring the guest that did have time for today, including
- 0:40our next guest. He's probably been running the
- 0:42longest For this office, it is Robert Wessels.
- 0:44Robert, welcome back to INSIDE Maine.
- 0:47Hey, thank you for having me. Really appreciate being on
- 0:50Inside Main Aaron. So like I said, you've been at
- 0:52this the longest of any of the candidates in the field starting
- 0:55a couple of years ago. We're now at the point where
- 0:58people are all paying attention. It's the it's the final stretch.
- 1:01What is your closing argument, number one?
- 1:04And then give us a sense of how you're going to breakthrough and
- 1:07actually win this nomination. Yeah, so I have been
- 1:12campaigning. We are pushing three years.
- 1:14We officially went public in July of 2023 and Oh my, things
- 1:19have changed over the last three years, you know, from really, as
- 1:23you said it, you know, people weren't paying attention too
- 1:26much specifically to the governor's race, obviously the
- 1:29way back then. But really in general, the
- 1:32conversations that I've been having have changed things that
- 1:36that people wouldn't talk about 3 years ago.
- 1:39We're having really good lively conversations around the state
- 1:43on it. And so my closing arguments as
- 1:46we wrap into the last, you know, 3 1/2 weeks, ultimately, I'm
- 1:52going to say, you know, the state of Maine is hurting right
- 1:55now. Even my Democrat counterparts
- 1:57admit to that when we're in discussions and forums together,
- 2:01whether you're talking about energy, property taxes, housing,
- 2:05cost of living. The problem is, is they double
- 2:09down and say, hey, we just need more money.
- 2:12And that's what they're doing is they're out of control.
- 2:15I think it's interesting to also call out that Angus King is the
- 2:18only Democrat candidate that hasn't been directly involved in
- 2:22creating this mess. And so I would urge any of your
- 2:25independence that are listening unenrolled, that are listening
- 2:30to, you know, if they're struggling, if they're looking
- 2:32at this economy, don't vote Democrat in November.
- 2:35Take a look at the Republican side.
- 2:38We have some amazing candidates or we will have one amazing
- 2:41candidate in November. I hope to make that be me.
- 2:45But we really need a governor who brings business sense and
- 2:50common sense to the Blaine House.
- 2:54I would also make the argument that as I've been talking to
- 2:58thousands of people around the state, that really the people of
- 3:02Maine are feeling like our government is really, really out
- 3:06of touch with us, the everyday people and with reality.
- 3:11And so we need, we need a governor that is, you know, from
- 3:14among the people. I am an everyday business guy,
- 3:17which is why I started three years ago because I was smart
- 3:20enough to realize it. Nobody knows Robert Wessel is
- 3:23outside of Oxford Hills and I don't have a ton of money.
- 3:27And so I, I did have time at that point.
- 3:30And I will say that was a great campaign move.
- 3:34It's worked well and, and my name is out there now.
- 3:38So for those who don't know, I've been in retail management
- 3:43for the last 20 years and we do own a small family farm here in,
- 3:46in South Paris. But I would also make the
- 3:49argument that, you know, when I, when my electricity bill goes
- 3:52from $168 to 353 like it has in the last couple years, I feel
- 3:58that and that impacts the way I would run things in Augusta and
- 4:03the decisions that I realize need to be made.
- 4:06So I would also lastly just make the make the argument that we
- 4:11need an outsider in Augusta, somebody who's not wrapped up in
- 4:15the way it has always been, but is willing to, who's willing to
- 4:19look outside the box and say, OK, like it, you know, maybe by
- 4:24its own is the best way. Perfectly fine with that.
- 4:26But let's look outside that box for those solutions and and
- 4:29let's consider things that we haven't considered before
- 4:33because clearly what we're doing and what we have been doing,
- 4:37especially in the last eight years hasn't been working.
- 4:40Now, our last guest that was on on the program made the same
- 4:43argument. It was Jonathan Bush, it was
- 4:45here in studio and he said we need an outsider.
- 4:47This is an election for an outsider.
- 4:48You made news in the last couple weeks where you, I, and maybe
- 4:51you can clear up for me what it is that you did or didn't do
- 4:54because you accepted a role in the Jonathan Bush for governor
- 4:58campaign, but you're still running against him, but you're
- 5:02not endorsing him. But you do like what?
- 5:05Clear it up for me. Happy to clear that up.
- 5:09Thank you for mentioning it and giving me that opportunity.
- 5:12So, yeah, I'll be honest. When Jonathan Bush launched his
- 5:15campaign, you know, as far as frank choice voting goes, he was
- 5:19at the bottom of mine. I was like, no, no, not a Bush.
- 5:23And over time, you know, as I've rubbed shoulders with all of
- 5:26these guys on, you know, from my son and he's just slowly
- 5:30climbed, climbed in my opinion, he is a small government guy.
- 5:34And I really agree. He and I see eye to eye with
- 5:38really the path forward economically, business wise and
- 5:42government wise. They're both small government
- 5:45guys. There are many things that we
- 5:47disagree on, you know, and you know, some of those are your
- 5:52your social issues and things like that.
- 5:55And so I was faced with the decision because, as you know,
- 5:59anybody would know not polling well.
- 6:02And so ultimately I I was faced with the decision.
- 6:06Do you get out? Do you jump onto somebody else's
- 6:08campaign? Do you?
- 6:09And I said, no, I'm a different enough candidate and I have a
- 6:14lot of things that, you know, only I have and, and people are
- 6:18looking for. And so I'm going to stay in.
- 6:21However, if if I don't get in, I want another small government
- 6:26guy. And so I basically I came out in
- 6:30the public and said I will be giving my second, my rank choice
- 6:33voting second vote to Jonathan Bush.
- 6:37And so yes, that did make news That is not normal.
- 6:40But I guess that's what happens when you have non politicians
- 6:44running for governor. So what do you think is the most
- 6:48important thing for people to know?
- 6:49What really sets you apart? You said you're an outsider,
- 6:52you're a normal guy or a business guy.
- 6:53But like, what would you do differently as governor than any
- 6:56of these other candidates you're running against?
- 6:59Again, I would make the argument that as the outsider, as the
- 7:03everyday guy with common sense, I'm going to be just like I do
- 7:07in the business world, right? Looking at the problems with a
- 7:09different lens, a different perspective and being willing to
- 7:14try some outside the box solutions, right?
- 7:18No matter what. It is the other thing that I
- 7:21think I, the other thing that I think really matters is again,
- 7:27just that that approach and that willingness to be able to, to,
- 7:34to look at it and do things differently at my campaign, you
- 7:38know, and I think you would agree for sure hasn't, has not
- 7:42been your traditional campaign. And, and I'm perfectly happy
- 7:46with that. I, I'm OK and my governorship
- 7:48would be the same thing again. We continue to build and create
- 7:53bureaucracy. Every time I hear a solution,
- 7:56people are like, oh, well, we need to add this committee.
- 7:58We need to add this. Yeah.
- 8:00And no, like, clearly, you know, a big government is just, it's
- 8:05not efficient and it's costly and it's not effective and it's
- 8:11not working. So we have to do something
- 8:13different. So final question for you,
- 8:16Robert, thinking about where we are in this race, there started
- 8:20to be a lot of negative attack ads and attacks going on between
- 8:23the top candidates, right? I had Bobby Charles and Jonathan
- 8:25Bush on before you. Ben Midgley's in the mix there.
- 8:28You, you see the attacks flowing.
- 8:30I'm, I'm sure Garrett too, right?
- 8:31So with, with them, they're attacked.
- 8:33How do Republicans unite after the primaries over the ballots
- 8:37are counted or ranked or run off or whatever happens when a
- 8:40winner emerges? How will Republicans, how should
- 8:44Republicans unite to then win the governorship in November?
- 8:48My personal opinion is we pick a gubernatorial candidate who
- 8:53hasn't been doing all of that stuff and who is gets along well
- 8:58with all of the candidates and would very easily be able to
- 9:03unite us. And that would be me.
- 9:05Obviously, I haven't gotten into the weeds.
- 9:08And to me, we need as a party, we need to focus on the other
- 9:12side and the solutions that we offer.
- 9:14That being said, no matter and, and I know there's some with a
- 9:21couple debates ago, there was some Flack for, for this, but
- 9:25the reality is, you know, no matter who wins the primary, I
- 9:29am on board. Let's go.
- 9:31All seven Republican candidates are far and away better for
- 9:35Maine than the five Democratic candidates on the other side.
- 9:39And I, you have my commitment. If I'm not chosen as a
- 9:43gubernatorial candidate, I will offer my services to the person
- 9:47who is because Maine, it's all about Maine.
- 9:52It's not about me. Never has been, and Maine needs
- 9:56a Republican governor in November.
- 10:00Well, I think that's a good sentiment.
- 10:01I think it's the right argument. Robert Wessels, Republican
- 10:04candidate for governor. If people want to learn more
- 10:06about your candidacy and your campaign, where can they go?
- 10:09Yeah, go to voterobertwhistles.com.
- 10:12That is my website and also Facebook X Instagram kind of all
- 10:17the socials. And you were cutting out a
- 10:20little bit for a second. So say that website one more
- 10:21time. I want to make sure people get
- 10:22it. Yeah, thank you.
- 10:24Vote robertwessels.com. Voterobertwessels.com Robert
- 10:28Wessels, candidate for Covenant. Thank you so much for being back
- 10:31with us on Inside Main. Good luck as you race toward the
- 10:34finish line. Thank you.
- 10:35We're sprinting towards the end. Have a good.
- 10:37Day, Have a great rest of your day.
- 10:39You're listening to INSIDE Main. I'm your host, Aaron Chadbourne.
- 10:42We are spending this Saturday, just like we did last week,
- 10:45talking to gubernatorial candidates.
- 10:48So far today, we've had three of the Republicans and now is kind
- 10:51of where we're going to reset and talk to some people on the
- 10:54other side of the aisle. So let me talk to you about what
- 10:56we have planned coming up to fill out the rest of this
- 10:59segment. We're awaiting a call from Maine
- 11:01Secretary of State Shanna Bellows.
- 11:03She, of course, is a Democrat who is running for the Democrat
- 11:07nomination to be governor after Secretary Bellows will have a
- 11:10doctor, Nirav Shah in studio. So we'll get to speak with
- 11:14Doctor Shaw. For those of you who've been
- 11:15listening to me all year, you'll know that he's the only
- 11:18candidate, the only major candidate that I have not spoken
- 11:20to yet. So he will complete my New
- 11:22Year's resolution that I sat with Jeremy.
- 11:25And then in the 12:00 hour, we'll talk first with State
- 11:29Senator Rick Bennett, who will be joining us.
- 11:31He's an independent running for governor.
- 11:33And we'll close the show in the 12:30 segment with former State
- 11:37Senator Troy Jackson. He's a Democrat.
- 11:39He's a social. They just announced that Bernie
- 11:41Sanders is coming to town to stump with him and Graham
- 11:44Plattner once again. So that's going to be how we
- 11:47spend the rest of our show. We have those, you know, 3 down,
- 11:514 to go in terms of how many candidates we've gone through
- 11:54today. And I think it's great.
- 11:56And for those of you who've been texting in your questions, just
- 11:58know I am reading them as I have my computer up, as I'm having
- 12:02the conversations. So if you have questions that
- 12:04you would like me to get in front of the candidates as they
- 12:07come on, please text them in. It's 207-879-9426 is the text
- 12:13line.
