- 0:00Hi there, my name is Gary Spencer, this is team of the 80s.
- 0:03Thank you for tuning in with us.
- 0:06If you haven't already done so, please like comment or subscribe on whatever platform you're listening or watching this.
- 0:13And just One other reminder, September 22nd in the International break, I'll be having Andy Gray on the podcast.
- 0:24So we had the interview, I'm editing it.
- 0:28It's really, really good and is so honest and open and there's some great stories in there, particularly if you remember that.
- 0:35Crystal Palace, Liverpool FA cup semi final.
- 0:38Some really, really great stories.
- 0:40So looking forward to that.
- 0:41Right, on with this week's show.
- 0:44Ipswich.
- 0:46I don't know what to say really about Ipswich yet.
- 0:50We had a man sent off but it's which are a newly promoted side and they're away from home, right?
- 0:58And whatever anybody thinks about the recruitment through the summer, we've got enough players in that squad to overcome it.
- 1:06Switch.
- 1:07Right.
- 1:08In fact, let me counter with this argument.
- 1:10If we'd have played them in the Carabao cup, we'd have put out a much weaker side than we did on Saturday, right?
- 1:17And we'd have probably got a result, who knows.
- 1:21But the thing is, it's not, this is going to be a big criticism of Sarge.
- 1:27Again, it's not how he picks the team or where he picks the team.
- 1:33It's also what he does in game, right?
- 1:36So let's start off with how he picks the team.
- 1:38Anderson is not playing, right?
- 1:39He's your captain.
- 1:41We're already struggling clearly with leaders.
- 1:43If you, if, if your goalkeeper is the captain, that's the first thing.
- 1:47Second of all, you've got use on the bench who not only leads by just being his character, but he leads by example, meaning that he gets on the ball, he makes things happen, he crunches tackles and he plays
- 2:02in the middle of the park.
- 2:03So for me, as soon as Henderson's not playing, particularly when you're playing in a team which isn't doing well, which is Crystal palace by the way, for those of you that don't know, you put using and you put
- 2:14him in as your skipper, right?
- 2:16So you have a bit of leadership in and around midfield.
- 2:19Second of all, when he's bringing on the subs, I, I just don't understand his substitutions.
- 2:26I do not understand them.
- 2:29Sarge for me is out of his depth and I've said it a couple of times or alluded to it a couple of times and now I'm telling you Sarge is out of his depth and Keep trying to cover
- 2:42things up by either throwing some players under the bus, but covering for SA.
- 2:47SAR's never had a groin injury.
- 2:49Never.
- 2:50It was well known that the day he came out, just before the window closed, he was training on his own, he was running around on his own.
- 2:58Right?
- 3:00Don't think Sar's injured.
- 3:01I don't think Mateta's injured.
- 3:03I think Mateta was told to go off for a month over that transfer window.
- 3:08I don't think he's injured.
- 3:09And then other players, he's thrown under the bus.
- 3:12So you, you gotta, you gotta establish yourself in a dressing room and get results in a dressing room before you start coming out and saying certain things publicly.
- 3:25It takes time to do that.
- 3:26And even the people that have been doing it a long time, they don't do it every week.
- 3:31Right?
- 3:31Right.
- 3:33And some don't do it at all.
- 3:34They just get results and they've just got their own way of leadership.
- 3:38Sarge is, is for me, he's out of his debt.
- 3:42So that's, that's one thing.
- 3:44The game itself, we were, I, I felt we were holding on really, even with the red card.
- 3:50You could, so many palace fans are like, oh, the red card, the red card, the red card.
- 3:55You see Man City and people are going to say, oh yeah, it's Man City.
- 3:58They got millions of dollars of, of players out there.
- 4:02Yeah, they have, but so have Manchester United and City were away from home and, you know, they just found a way.
- 4:10They changed the system.
- 4:11Mares could change the system.
- 4:13Sarge could have changed the system on, on Saturday.
- 4:17My thing is, is that we are not at the moment protecting the point.
- 4:22Right?
- 4:22So we're not even getting a draw out of certain games.
- 4:26At the very least against Ipswich, we should have got a draw at the very least, right?
- 4:31And we didn't.
- 4:32And you know now how important those three points were at Fulham.
- 4:36God knows how we got those, but we got them.
- 4:38But three points, you look at the division, just because we won that game, we're a lot higher than maybe we should be.
- 4:45Because by the way we're playing, we should be rock bottom, Trust me.
- 4:49Wharton again, non existent.
- 4:52And when he was existent, way below average.
- 4:58Not getting involved enough.
- 4:59Certainly not a captain.
- 5:00Why he gave him the armband?
- 5:02I don't, I do not know.
- 5:03Why would you give Walton the armband?
- 5:05He's obviously not like overflowing in confidence.
- 5:08He's not the most vocal of people out there and he's not playing by example.
- 5:11So why you give him the armband?
- 5:13Right, just get Wharton concentrating on playing his football because right now he hasn't and he hasn't done it for a while.
- 5:19Said it in the other podcast.
- 5:21Tuko is nowhere near picking Morton anytime soon and neither should he.
- 5:26Wharton's been dreadful.
- 5:29Timber, I thought Timber was great.
- 5:31I thought that was one sign on Saturday of something positive.
- 5:35I thought Timber did very, very well for us.
- 5:38So good to see him in there and I think he'll be a player for us.
- 5:42By the way.
- 5:43I think Gozo will be a play for us too.
- 5:45But right now he's getting asked to come on with 10 minutes to play and we're losing.
- 5:50Gozo, for me, should have started against Middlesbrough and when then we'd have got a bit more confidence out of him when we'd have seen exactly what he's about.
- 5:58So, yeah, those are the pluses and the minuses for me.
- 6:02One thing I've noticed as well lately in the game, not just at Crystal palace, but everywhere, the love of players getting their wrists strapped up and banshees up and the excuses given is that, well, it's going to protect
- 6:17them if they fall over.
- 6:18Well, as football has suddenly started falling over then, because suddenly we've got like two or three players per team with their wrists strapped up.
- 6:25I haven't seen one injury yet of a player that's done his wrist.
- 6:29So to me, I think that's some kind of statement, some kind of fashion statement.
- 6:33I don't know what it is, but it, it's.
- 6:35It needs to be stopped.
- 6:37If I was, if I was in the dressing room as a trainer or a medical person before the game.
- 6:44This is where the game's changed now because players run whatever goes on.
- 6:47And the player said to me, can you.
- 6:48I know what would have happened in the 70s and 80s at palace with Charlie Simpson if you just said to the.
- 6:53The physio strapped my wrist up, he told you, go yourself.
- 6:57That's a fact.
- 6:58So I just do not know what's going on with the wrist strapping.
- 7:02Maybe you guys in your likes or your comments can, can educate me, educate me, please, on why the risks are getting strapped up.
- 7:11The Euro, the European games Thursday and Sunday, everyone.
- 7:16I saw a comment this morning on Twitter about we should really give it our all and hopefully qualify for the Champions League if we win it.
- 7:23We just lost to Ipswich at home, right?
- 7:25Get real.
- 7:26We ain't gonna win the Europa League.
- 7:29We're not.
- 7:30We just about scraped through Europa Conference without going down.
- 7:33We're not going to win Europa League.
- 7:35Right.
- 7:35Get it out your heads.
- 7:37Let's just concentrate on staying in the Premier League.
- 7:40That's where the bread and butter is.
- 7:41And if you're worried about the money that Paris is spending now in the Premier League, wow.
- 7:45You better be really concerned about what he would spend if he dropped down the Championship.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:52Thursday and Sunday is not going to suit this squad right now.
- 7:56It didn't suit it last year.
- 7:57We just scraped through and it's not going to suit us this year for sure, the way we're playing.
- 8:02So get real.
- 8:04Yeah, I get it.
- 8:05For a fan's perspective.
- 8:06Oh, we're in Europe.
- 8:07And that song, Champions of Europe.
- 8:10You'll never sing that.
- 8:12Come on, guys.
- 8:13Really.
- 8:14I mean, relegation favorites.
- 8:15They'll never sing that.
- 8:16That's big.
- 8:17Bit more likely.
- 8:18So, yeah.
- 8:19Come on, guys.
- 8:19It's like living.
- 8:21Live in reality, please.
- 8:23It's not.
- 8:25It doesn't make you more of a fan or not of a fan.
- 8:28If you're critical or decide.
- 8:29I mean, you'd have to be Stevie Wonder not to be critical about what's going on at Crystal palace right now.
- 8:34And it's okay to do that if you've spent your money, if you paid your money, you've got a right to say what you feel.
- 8:40Right.
- 8:40And every football's about opinions.
- 8:42Everyone's got their own opinion.
- 8:44I don't mind your opinion.
- 8:45You can leave it in the comments, you can leave it on Twitter for me, leave it on Instagram or TikTok.
- 8:49I don't mind.
- 8:50But please don't say somebody's not a fan if they're critical of the club.
- 8:54Right.
- 8:55I mean, you just got to stay in realism for me.
- 8:58I saw a comment by Rashid today, Spider Rashid, Darkout, talking about Bruno Fernandes and just cheating in general in, In.
- 9:06In the game.
- 9:08Yeah, it's.
- 9:09It's awful.
- 9:10I mean, Bruno Fernandes, the other fella, the Argentinian that plays for City.
- 9:18I don't.
- 9:18The fellow that plays for the man, City.
- 9:21I.
- 9:21I don't particularly rate Bruno Fernandez.
- 9:24Yeah, he's a good footballer.
- 9:25I hate the way his character.
- 9:27Hate it on the field.
- 9:29And really, we just got to try and stamp some of that cheating out because it's beginning.
- 9:34It's just.
- 9:35It's cringeworthy.
- 9:37I hate to see it.
- 9:38I understand why players roll over and shout and scream.
- 9:41Otherwise they don't get it.
- 9:44But, you know, you're really damaging the integrity of the game, I think.
- 9:48And other.
- 9:48And other footballers.
- 9:49I mean, Foden's a good footballer.
- 9:51I don't feel he did anything wrong on Saturday at all or Sunday.
- 9:55I don't think he did anything wrong.
- 9:57So yeah, we gotta really take a watch of that.
- 10:01A quick note on the criticism of Parish and the board on their spending.
- 10:07I think they, I think they recruited okay in the summer.
- 10:10We certainly got enough in.
- 10:11We certainly got enough to do better than we're doing.
- 10:13The only way I would criticize him is by employing Sarge because I think sooner rather than later he's going to go.
- 10:20But just remember, guys, that the same person you're criticizing brought in Elise as a gay.
- 10:26Munoz Henderson, when we go on.
- 10:30So Steve Parish has done all right by Crystal Palace.
- 10:35He's always made the, the right decisions at the right time and I'm sure it'll make a very quick decision on Sarge very soon, particularly if we don't get a result at Leeds.
- 10:45All right, that's going to be a interesting international break, trust me.
- 10:49And that's it for this week.
- 10:51Sorry, it's not too encouraging, but if you, if you look at it properly for what it is, it's not that encouraging.
- 10:57There were glimpses, little glimpses of us playing against sits rich, but very, very few and far between.
- 11:05Timber for me was the highlight of it.
- 11:09People talk about Australian Arson's finishing.
- 11:11Compared to Mateta, neither of them are particularly great.
- 11:15So let's look forward to Leeds.
- 11:18I, in my heart of hearts, I would love us to get us a result there.
- 11:22I can't see it, not right now.
- 11:23I can't see us getting anything at Leeds.
- 11:25And yeah, look forward to the podcast next week, September 22nd with Andy Gray.
- 11:31And please like, comment and subscribe wherever you watch or listen to these podcasts.
- 11:37All right, thanks again for listening.
- 11:39I do appreciate it.
- 11:40And as always, come on, you Palace.
