- 0:00Hey everyone, this is Dr. Hartung from Family
- 0:02Chiropractic Center here in Robinson Township,
- 0:04Pennsylvania. Thanks for tuning in today. You
- 0:07know what I see more than almost anything else
- 0:09in my practice these days? Neck pain, shoulder
- 0:12tension, and headaches all tied to one common
- 0:15culprit, our screens. Whether it's your phone,
- 0:19your laptop, or your tablet, We're spending more
- 0:22time looking down and hunched forward than ever
- 0:25before in human history. And our bodies, well,
- 0:28they're paying the price. So today I want to
- 0:31talk about why posture matters more than ever
- 0:34and what you can do about it starting right now.
- 0:37Here's the thing, your head weighs about 10 to
- 0:3912 pounds when it's balanced properly on top
- 0:42of your spine. But for every inch your head moves
- 0:46forward, you're adding roughly 10 extra pounds
- 0:49of stress on your neck and upper back. So if
- 0:52you're looking down at your phone with your head
- 0:54tilted forward just two or three inches, your
- 0:57neck is suddenly supporting 25, maybe 30 pounds.
- 1:00That's like carrying a bowling ball around on
- 1:03your shoulders all day long. Now multiply that
- 1:06by hours every single day. Your muscles get tired.
- 1:09They start to fatigue and tighten up. Then your
- 1:12joints get compressed. Over time, this forward
- 1:15head posture creates a chain reaction through
- 1:18your entire spine. You start rounding your shoulders.
- 1:21Your mid -back curves too much. Your lower back
- 1:24has to compensate, and suddenly you've got pain
- 1:26and tension in places you didn't even realize
- 1:28were connected. Let me break this down a little
- 1:31more. When your posture is off, it's not just
- 1:33about looking slouched. It actually affects how
- 1:36well you breathe, how much energy you have, even
- 1:38your mood and confidence. Poor posture compresses
- 1:42your chest cavity, which means your lungs can't
- 1:45expand fully. You're taking shallower breaths
- 1:48without even realizing it. That makes you feel
- 1:51more tired and stressed. Plus, there's growing
- 1:53research showing that forward head posture can
- 1:56contribute to chronic tension headaches and even
- 1:59jaw problems. Everything in your body is connected.
- 2:03When one part is out of alignment, other parts
- 2:06have to work harder to compensate. So what can
- 2:09you do about it? Let me give you three simple
- 2:11changes you can start today. First, raise your
- 2:14screens. Whether it's your computer monitor or
- 2:16your phone, bring it up closer to eye level.
- 2:19Your eyes should be able to look straight ahead
- 2:21or just slightly down, not way down at your lap.
- 2:24I know it feels a little awkward at first, but
- 2:26your neck will thank you. Second, set a timer.
- 2:30Every 30 minutes, take a quick break. Roll your
- 2:32shoulders back. Gently tuck your chin and lengthen
- 2:35the back of your neck. Take three deep breaths.
- 2:38Just 20 seconds of resetting your posture can
- 2:40make a huge difference over the course of a day.
- 2:43Third, strengthen your upper back. The muscles
- 2:46between your shoulder blades are often weak and
- 2:48overstretched in people with forward posture.
- 2:50Simple exercises like wall angels or resistance
- 2:53band rows can help wake those muscles back up
- 2:56and pull your shoulders into a better position.
- 2:58Now here's what I want you to understand. If
- 3:00you're already dealing with neck pain, shoulder
- 3:03tightness, or frequent headaches, These tips
- 3:05can help, but they're not a substitute for getting
- 3:09evaluated. Sometimes the joints in your neck
- 3:11and upper back get stuck or restricted from months
- 3:15or years of poor posture. That's where chiropractic
- 3:18care comes in. We can gently restore motion to
- 3:21those areas, reduce tension, and get you moving
- 3:24the way you're supposed to. At Family Chiropractic
- 3:28Center, we see people every single day who thought
- 3:30they just had to live with neck pain or tension
- 3:33headaches. And the truth is, most of the time
- 3:36you don't. With the right combination of adjustments,
- 3:39posture correction, and some simple exercises,
- 3:42people feel dramatically better. So if you've
- 3:45been putting up with pain or tightness, don't
- 3:47wait until it gets worse. Give us a call. We're
- 3:50right here in Robinson Township and we'd love
- 3:53to help you feel better and move better. Thanks
- 3:55so much for listening today. Take care of that
- 3:58posture and I'll talk to you next time.
