- 0:21Here we go. Ready.
- 0:22Set your brains. Well, good day knowledge
- 0:25adventures. Welcome to Kit Cast Daily, where
- 0:29every episode takes you on a journey through sports, science,
- 0:33history, and all the fascinating corners of our world.
- 0:37Today we are exploring geometry, the branch of math that studies
- 0:40shapes, sizes, positions and dimensions.
- 0:44You see geometry all around you in tiles on a floor, the face of
- 0:48a clock, a soccer balls pattern, and the screen of a tablet.
- 0:53Get ready for quick questions, short pauses, and clear answers
- 0:56that build your shape smarts warm up time.
- 1:10Here comes your first question. What do you call a shape with
- 1:13straight sides that closes up? The answer is a Polygon.
- 1:21A Polygon is any closed shape made only of straight line
- 1:24segments like a triangle, square, or Pentagon.
- 1:28If its sides and angles are all equal, it is called a regular
- 1:32Polygon. Question 2.
- 1:35How many degrees are in the angles of a triangle when you
- 1:38add them all up? The answer is 180°.
- 1:46No matter the type of triangle, the interior angles always total
- 1:50180°. An equilateral triangle has 360°
- 1:56angles that add to 180. Question three.
- 2:00What do you call an angle that is exactly 90°?
- 2:07The answer is a right angle. It looks like the corner of a
- 2:11piece of paper or a book. Angles smaller than 90° are
- 2:15acute, and angles larger than 90 but less than 180 are obtuse.
- 2:20Question for a circle has how many degrees around it?
- 2:29The answer is 360°. This is called a full turn.
- 2:33If you rotate halfway around a circle, that is 180° and a
- 2:38quarter turn is 90°. Question 5.
- 2:42In a circle, which is longer, the radius or the diameter?
- 2:50The answer is the diameter. The radius goes from the center
- 2:54to the edge, and the diameter goes all the way across through
- 2:58the center. So the diameter equals to radii.
- 3:01If a radius is 5 units, the diameter is 10 units.
- 3:06Question 6. What is the special name for a
- 3:09triangle with all three sides the same length?
- 3:16The answer is an equilateral triangle.
- 3:19In an equilateral triangle, all three angles are equal to each
- 3:24measuring 60°. This triangle is also a regular
- 3:29Polygon because its sides and angles match.
- 3:32Question 7. What do we call the distance
- 3:35around a shape like the outside of a rectangle?
- 3:42The answer is perimeter. You find perimeter by adding the
- 3:46lengths of all sides. For a rectangle that is length
- 3:49plus width plus length plus width or two times length +2
- 3:54times width. Question 8.
- 3:57What do we call the amount of space of flat shape covers like
- 4:00the inside of a rectangle? The answer is area.
- 4:08For a rectangle, area equals length times width.
- 4:12Area is measured in square units like square centimeters or
- 4:17square meters. Question 9.
- 4:19How many sides does a hexagon have?
- 4:26The answer is 6 sides. A regular hexagon has 6 equal
- 4:30sides and 6 equal angles. Hexagons can fit together with
- 4:35no gaps to make a tessellation. Question 10.
- 4:39What is the formula letter we use for the number that compares
- 4:42a circle's circumference to its diameter?
- 4:49The answer is π written with the Greek letter Pi π is about
- 4:533.14159 and it goes on without repeating.
- 4:57You can find a circle circumference with C = π times
- 5:01diameter or π * 2 times radius. Question 11.
- 5:07A square belongs to what larger family of shapes with four
- 5:10sides? The answer is quadrilaterals.
- 5:18A quadrilateral is any 4 sided Polygon, a square is a special
- 5:22quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles, and
- 5:26a rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles.
- 5:30Question 12. What is the name for the point
- 5:33where two sides of a shape meet? The answer is a vertex and the
- 5:41plural is vertices. Triangles have 3 vertices,
- 5:45squares have 4, and cubes have 8.
- 5:48In 3D shapes, edges meet at vertices and faces are the flat
- 5:53surfaces. Question 13 How many faces does
- 5:57a cube have? The answer is six faces.
- 6:05A cube also has 12 edges and eight vertices.
- 6:08Every face of a cube is a square.
- 6:11Question 14 Which 3D shape has one curved surface and no edges
- 6:16or vertices? The answer is a sphere.
- 6:23A sphere is perfectly round, like a ball, and every point on
- 6:28the surface is the same distance from the center.
- 6:31Unlike a cube or pyramid, it has no flat faces.
- 6:35Question 15 What do we call 2 angles that add up to 90°?
- 6:44The answer is complementary angles.
- 6:47If one angle is 30° and the other is 60°, they're
- 6:51complementary because they total 90.
- 6:53If two angles add to 180°, they are called Supplementary
- 6:58Question 16 On a coordinate grid, what do we call the point
- 7:03where the X axis and Y axis X's cross?
- 7:10The answer is the origin. The origin has coordinate 00.
- 7:15The grid is split into 4 quadrants and each point has an
- 7:18X value and AY value. Question 17 What do you call a
- 7:23shape that can be flipped or mirrored onto itself across a
- 7:26line? The answer is line symmetry,
- 7:34also called reflection symmetry. The special line is called a
- 7:38line of symmetry. A regular Pentagon has five
- 7:41lines of symmetry and a square has four.
- 7:45Question 18 What do we call a shape that repeats to cover a
- 7:49flat surface with no gaps or overlaps?
- 7:56The answer is a tessellation, also called a tiling.
- 8:00Regular triangles, squares, and regular hexagons can tessellate
- 8:04by themselves. Other shapes can tessellate when
- 8:07arranged in a repeating pattern. Question 19 What type of
- 8:11triangle has 1 angle equal to 90°?
- 8:19The answer is a right triangle. The side across from the right
- 8:23angle is called the hypotenuse and it is the longest side.
- 8:27Right triangles are important in measurement, design, and
- 8:31navigation. Question 20.
- 8:33In a rectangle, what is the name of the segment that connects
- 8:37opposite corners inside it? The answer is a diagonal.
- 8:45A rectangle has two diagonals and they are the same length.
- 8:49In a square. The diagonals also cross at
- 8:52right angles. Question 21 Which 3D shape has
- 8:57two circular bases and one curved surface connecting them?
- 9:05The answer is a cylinder. A can is a clear example of a
- 9:09cylinder. In real life, cylinders have no
- 9:12edges on the curved surface because it is smooth.
- 9:15Question 22. How many degrees are in a
- 9:19straight angle? The answer is 180°.
- 9:27A straight angle looks like a straight line.
- 9:30It is the same as half of a full turn around a circle.
- 9:33You're doing great. Time for the Super Challenge.
- 9:37Listen closely and think it through.
- 9:40Super challenge question. A triangle has sides 3 units and
- 9:44four units that meet at a right angle.
- 9:46What is the length of the side across from the right angle?
- 9:53The answer is 5 units in a right triangle with legs 3 and 4.
- 9:59The hypotenuse is 5 because 3 ^2 + 4 ^2 = 9 + 16, which is 25 and
- 10:06sqrt 25 is 5. This special set of numbers is a
- 10:10common example used to check right triangle side lengths.
- 10:19That wraps up our journey through geometry.
- 10:23You explored polygons, angles, circles, grids, and 3D shapes.
- 10:28Keep noticing shapes in buildings, signs, sports fields,
- 10:31and art and you will see math at work everywhere.
