- 0:20Speaker 1: ten am. Mega announcement coming. Here's the show.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We have a live audience. No, it might be want
- 0:27Speaker 2: someone on his team or something. I didn't realize we
- 0:29Speaker 2: had a live audience. We don't if we have. If
- 0:32Speaker 2: we have a live audience, that'd be kind of cool.
- 0:34Speaker 2: If we could do that too. We could do the
- 0:36Speaker 2: show live. We should do it live. We should have
- 0:39Speaker 2: a live audience and sell tickets for the live Well,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you need to be edited and I need to be edited. Yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 2: but the live audience, the live audience can't record, can they.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm sure they can record, and they're just gonna wait
- 0:51Speaker 1: for you to say something stupid right now.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It might happen today, and it might happen a day
- 1:00Speaker 2: and you.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And I are still able to do this podcast is
- 1:03Speaker 1: because Daniell edits.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It Listen, we've said some of the most. You're absolutely right,
- 1:08Speaker 2: we've been so insensitive sometimes.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Well, and when you clean for two hours and you
- 1:15Speaker 1: sometimes broach sensitive issues, it's it's nice to be edited.
- 1:19Speaker 2: You don't.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You don't always not everyone is going to stick the
- 1:21Speaker 1: landing with how they phrase things.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Now, listen, I'm gonna say this. Go ahead. My wife
- 1:28Speaker 2: was saying this earlier to me today. She's like, baby,
- 1:32Speaker 2: there's nothing wrong with middle of a road. I was like,
- 1:36Speaker 2: what are you talking about. She's like, when you strive
- 1:39Speaker 2: to be too famous, things can go wrong just by
- 1:44Speaker 2: one thing you say. But when you strive to be
- 1:47Speaker 2: just you know, do you man? Make do what you
- 1:50Speaker 2: do best?
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yes, Donald, I agree. And also, don't throw freak offs because.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Watch it. But I'm not.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Saying anything other than I learned what a freak off was.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I didn't know that freak offs were a thing. I
- 2:09Speaker 1: have so many questions where Daniel will have to cut
- 2:11Speaker 1: it all if we go into it. But I just
- 2:13Speaker 1: want to say I'm being educated.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Can we get a can we get a quick overview
- 2:19Speaker 3: of what a freak off is?
- 2:21Speaker 2: No, but keep it one hundred man, I get it.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Let's on me talk about this in a way that
- 2:25Speaker 1: Daniel won't have to cut right, Okay, one is a
- 2:27Speaker 1: freak off Donald.
- 2:28Speaker 2: First of all, there's levels to it, and I've ever
- 2:30Speaker 2: been to one. No, That's what I'm trying to say.
- 2:33Speaker 2: There's levels to it, and I am on a certain level,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and then there's a whole another level.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I didn't know that there was nothing about it. I
- 2:41Speaker 1: didn't know there was a freak off level.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I didn't know about the freak off level either, And
- 2:45Speaker 2: I like to think I'm well connected. I now know
- 2:47Speaker 2: that I am not.
- 2:48Speaker 1: You have never been to a freak cough.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I'm assuming I've never been to a freak off, Daniel,
- 2:53Speaker 2: have you ever been to a freak off? I think
- 2:55Speaker 2: I left. I'm sure I left early.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm still not sure what a freak off. I assume
- 2:59Speaker 1: a freak off is. People try and outdo one another
- 3:04Speaker 1: with sexual acts so that people.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Are like, WHOA.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I thought what I was doing was crazy. What you're
- 3:10Speaker 1: doing is next level. And this is a public space,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know, think of it like think of it like,
- 3:16Speaker 1: think of it.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Like it's like a break, like step it, step up.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Step up the street.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I was he gonna say step up. I was gonna say, like.
- 3:26Speaker 1: The you know, the NBA does the Basketball Dunking Company.
- 3:30Speaker 2: No, the Dunking Company Saturday Night. Yeah, I dun like
- 3:34Speaker 2: step up, like you bring your crew, bring my crew?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Every freak off?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Oh no, I think it's absurd. In the freak off
- 3:43Speaker 1: you mean like you mean, like, what's time we were
- 3:45Speaker 1: Julia Stiles learns to break.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The last dance. There's no battling.
- 3:54Speaker 1: There's battling and say the last like not like but
- 3:58Speaker 1: all right, but listen, what's the other one that's doing
- 4:00Speaker 1: my analogy? Can we go with my analogy?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Please? In the NBA dunking competition, what's the one with
- 4:06Speaker 2: Chris Brown?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Ok, it's like the dunking competition, but with sexual acts.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm assuming where someone's like, yo, he just went that
- 4:14Speaker 1: was insane. The crowd goes wild, and now it's my,
- 4:19Speaker 1: me and Tom's turn, and we're gonna let me show
- 4:21Speaker 1: you what a freak is.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Freaking off.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they free and then the audience is like, wow,
- 4:27Speaker 1: they freaked.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Off holding up tins nine. Yeah, it's a freak off.
- 4:34Speaker 2: It's a freak off. Dan, have you ever been to
- 4:37Speaker 2: one of those? Daniel? You know, I haven't.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm missing out on the freak Wonder if
- 4:42Speaker 1: I've been to parties where they are like, all right,
- 4:44Speaker 1: get everyone out of here who's like normal, and then
- 4:46Speaker 1: we're gonna have a off and I'm like, oh, the
- 4:48Speaker 1: party's over, going home. And then they're like and they're
- 4:51Speaker 1: like to get the yeah, get the normies out, like
- 4:54Speaker 1: turn off the lights. Like everyone like, oh, we're all leaving.
- 4:57Speaker 1: We're all leaving. And then I go home and I'm
- 4:59Speaker 1: like in bed, like reading my book, and there then
- 5:01Speaker 1: the freak off.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Starts right right. Wow. By the way, Donald, that movie
- 5:07Speaker 2: you were thinking of was Stomp the Yard. Stomp the Yard.
- 5:10Speaker 2: That's the one Columbus Short, Columbus Short and and Chris
- 5:15Speaker 2: Brown Donald one with a marion. Then there's one with
- 5:17Speaker 2: a marion and B two k in them and they
- 5:21Speaker 2: had a real popular one too, and they're trying to
- 5:23Speaker 2: it's like a community center that all the dances. I forget.
- 5:27Speaker 1: The funny ship is Julia Styles learning to break dance.
- 5:29Speaker 1: That ship's amazing. Have you ever seen that video on
- 5:31Speaker 1: the internet when she like she finds the rhythm of
- 5:35Speaker 1: the city. It's amazing, Yo, you gotta watch you just
- 5:41Speaker 1: look on you like.
- 5:42Speaker 2: A fucking exact Oh you know, said then doing that thing.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I told her rhythm.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I just remember there's a clip that's so cringe where
- 5:56Speaker 1: she's like she's learning to break like by looking at
- 5:59Speaker 1: the rhythm of the city, and like she sees people
- 6:01Speaker 1: playing basketball, and then she's like she sees how they move,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and then.
- 6:04Speaker 2: She think, that's honey, that's honey.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Oh I'm conflating two movies.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That's fine, that's honey, that's what. That's what just.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's two different women who learned the rhythm of
- 6:16Speaker 1: the streets. Yeah, well, the Puffies, Puffy's in a lot
- 6:26Speaker 1: of trouble. Holy shit, I don't think out of shill.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I mean, I've just been writing so much about it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I didn't know anything about any of this. I really
- 6:35Speaker 1: know very little about Puffy, but I've just been reading,
- 6:38Speaker 1: as I'm sure a lot of people have. It's insane
- 6:40Speaker 1: what's been going on over it just.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Goes deeper, Like it just is deeper than we thought
- 6:44Speaker 2: it was. That's all, Like, no, I don't know anything,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you don't know anything like that just shows we don't know.
- 6:53Speaker 2: But they were so many charges.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I've been reading, like The Feds don't bring that many
- 6:59Speaker 1: charge arges unless they like have it all Like, they
- 7:02Speaker 1: don't they don't do what they did or the Rico
- 7:04Speaker 1: case unless they like have it all, right, Dan, you
- 7:08Speaker 1: know more about this than me. It's all allegedly. We
- 7:11Speaker 1: got to say it's all allegedly. But I'm saying little
- 7:15Speaker 1: I know about Rico charges and that's very little.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Is that?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Like they don't show their cards until they like have
- 7:21Speaker 1: it all right?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Right?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's no joke at this point.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Well, I will say this man for a really long
- 7:29Speaker 2: it's it's heartbreaking in a lot of ways too, because
- 7:31Speaker 2: Puff was a hero to a lot of young men,
- 7:34Speaker 2: a lot of people, you know what I mean. And
- 7:36Speaker 2: if this is the way it goes down, holy shit. Wow.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You know, well you might you might learn there might
- 7:43Speaker 1: be things proven that make him uh a really horrible,
- 7:47Speaker 1: horrible person.
- 7:49Speaker 2: We don't know, Yeah, I mean, you know, videos don't lie.
- 7:53Speaker 2: You know already the video of him. I don't want
- 7:56Speaker 2: to go into it, but anyway, Yeah, Daniel, I.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Was just going to say, you know, it's it is
- 8:00Speaker 3: always disappointing when you find out people that you previously
- 8:02Speaker 3: looked up to are monsters. You could say the same
- 8:04Speaker 3: thing about Bill Cosby. He was America's dad. He was
- 8:07Speaker 3: also a monster, and it's like, that's tough.
- 8:10Speaker 1: This one came out of the blue, thought, I mean,
- 8:12Speaker 1: just because I don't really know much about Puffy, to
- 8:14Speaker 1: be honest, I really don't. I know he was, I
- 8:15Speaker 1: know he was, I know all this like how he
- 8:18Speaker 1: influenced hip hop and everything, and I know very little,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but I this, this just came out of like all
- 8:23Speaker 1: of a sudden. This this is I mean, the articles
- 8:27Speaker 1: are everywhere and they're and they're so crazy, and people
- 8:32Speaker 1: are fucking quitting. Do you see all these people that
- 8:34Speaker 1: are that are quitting, stepping down.
- 8:37Speaker 2: From the jobs, from their jobs. They were definitely at
- 8:40Speaker 2: the freak off. Well, I don't know if they were
- 8:43Speaker 2: at the freak off, but it's very unusual that all
- 8:47Speaker 2: of a sudden people are like, you know what, I'm
- 8:48Speaker 2: gonna I'm gonna retire early.
- 8:52Speaker 1: But I'm thirty. What else would we talk about? I
- 8:57Speaker 1: don't know what else to say about the freak off?
- 8:59Speaker 4: Oh.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I ran into two actors who love you, Donald and
- 9:02Speaker 1: both want to come on the podcast at the Emmys.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Dou Lay Hill, right, you know, I love me some
- 9:09Speaker 2: dou lay hill, hold on, what go ahead?
- 9:13Speaker 4: I love me.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I was at the Emmys recruiting people left and right
- 9:16Speaker 1: and I and I thought I got dou late to say, yes.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Okay, that's wonderful. Go and I'm listening. I look at
- 9:23Speaker 2: but I look good.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Do you like my joke?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Did you watch my joke? I didn't watch you.
- 9:27Speaker 1: No, but my joke.
- 9:27Speaker 2: You can watch it on YouTube. You said I'll watch
- 9:30Speaker 2: it on YouTube after the show. Come on, man, I'll
- 9:33Speaker 2: watch it after this show.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I was texting you for your input, I know, and
- 9:39Speaker 1: I you didn't watch it. You know how I need
- 9:41Speaker 1: to watch it because after it crushed and it did
- 9:43Speaker 1: really well.
- 9:44Speaker 2: You didn't text me.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You didn't text me and be like, yo, you crushed.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Damn did you watch it?
- 9:50Speaker 4: I did watch it. You did crush.
- 9:51Speaker 2: So I'm not I'm not going to reveal it right now.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Because I know he knows the joke because I was
- 9:56Speaker 1: texting him for thought. I was texting him for thoughts
- 9:59Speaker 1: on it. And let me tell you something. I it's
- 10:01Speaker 1: pretty ballsy to do a joke you never rehearsed in
- 10:03Speaker 1: front of millions and millions and millions of people. Absolutely,
- 10:06Speaker 1: especially a joke that's got that's a little bit complex,
- 10:09Speaker 1: a little bit complex.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Just just just an instructure.
- 10:13Speaker 1: And and Bill was helping me with it, and he's like,
- 10:15Speaker 1: don't go for like four laps, dude, because you're gonna
- 10:18Speaker 1: be milking it. Go for like, go for like one
- 10:20Speaker 1: solid laugh. And I go, are you kidding me? I've
- 10:21Speaker 1: seen Christin wigg up there like get like five laughs
- 10:24Speaker 1: out of one sentence, Like I'm gonna try to like
- 10:26Speaker 1: milk the fucking thing. I only got like one line.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And and so.
- 10:31Speaker 1: It's so ballsy because we never rehearsed, and I went
- 10:34Speaker 1: up there and it fucking crushed.
- 10:36Speaker 2: I got like four laughs out of like two sentences.
- 10:39Speaker 2: That's crush the dude. That's awesome. You know what it's
- 10:42Speaker 2: like though, it's being like a parent because you do
- 10:45Speaker 2: it to me sometimes, and I know why you do it.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I'll have something that's coming out, and instead of going
- 10:53Speaker 2: right away to go see that ship, I'll wait because
- 10:57Speaker 2: I want I don't want it to be bad, and
- 10:59Speaker 2: I don't want it to be you know what I mean,
- 11:01Speaker 2: And me have to look you in the face, so
- 11:03Speaker 2: I'll wait. I'm surprised you don't want to say a.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Thing to me.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Fuck you, don't even try it. Man, it took you
- 11:08Speaker 2: nineteen years to see remember the Titans, So don't even
- 11:11Speaker 2: try it.
- 11:11Speaker 1: That was really bad, But that's just because I was
- 11:14Speaker 1: I don't know why I was weird, but I I
- 11:16Speaker 1: got to tell you, I was really nervous about it
- 11:18Speaker 1: because to get up in front of that room. I mean,
- 11:21Speaker 1: it's like all of the all of the people killing
- 11:23Speaker 1: it in Hollywood, and and and then of course who
- 11:28Speaker 1: all the millions of people who are watching at home,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and it's one thing that just like you should have
- 11:33Speaker 1: seen what they wrote. For me, it was like, oh
- 11:34Speaker 1: my god, I'm not going to get up in front
- 11:35Speaker 1: of those people and say this horrible, stupid joke. It's
- 11:38Speaker 1: not going to get eat in a chuckle. So then
- 11:40Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta like, I gotta shine, I
- 11:42Speaker 1: gotta like try and write something, and it has to
- 11:44Speaker 1: be quick because these things are quick. So I really
- 11:47Speaker 1: worked on it hard and UH and got some input
- 11:50Speaker 1: from from friends, including you, and UH and.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Thought I thought it was funny. From the gate. I like,
- 11:57Speaker 2: I like the banter between you and men from the gate.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I think your sister gave you some really good fucking advice.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Ay the way, that's someone else we're gonna have on
- 12:05Speaker 1: is Jessica Curson, my sister for those who don't know,
- 12:08Speaker 1: is a stand up whose career is just beginning finally.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I mean she's been at it and and now she's skyrocking.
- 12:13Speaker 1: She's got a Hulu special. She's fucking blowing up. Jessica Curson.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Check her out. But she's a great joke writer obviously
- 12:20Speaker 1: as a as a pro stand up who's crushing it.
- 12:22Speaker 2: She's been in it for a while. Man, she's been
- 12:25Speaker 2: in we first met well, it's kind of like at
- 12:27Speaker 2: the same time when Scrubs was happening. She kind of
- 12:32Speaker 2: Last Man Standing is a long long ride.
- 12:35Speaker 1: She was on that comic competition Last Man Study. But like,
- 12:38Speaker 1: if you go to New York and you go to
- 12:39Speaker 1: The Cellar, which is, you know, the best comedy club
- 12:42Speaker 1: on McDougal Downtown, you know, she's like, you know, one
- 12:45Speaker 1: of their staples. She's like one of the And if
- 12:48Speaker 1: you ever watched that show, what's Pete Holmes's show called
- 12:51Speaker 1: Again Crashing, it was about stand up comics. Jessica plays
- 12:55Speaker 1: herself a lot of New York stand ups play themselves
- 12:58Speaker 1: in it, and Jessica played herself in it, and she
- 12:59Speaker 1: was really funny on that. But now you know she's
- 13:02Speaker 1: finally getting her flowers. She got a big special And anyway,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Donald's right, Jessica gave me a help me with a
- 13:09Speaker 1: joke because you know, I'm not a I'm not a
- 13:11Speaker 1: stand up comic, so she helped me refine it too.
- 13:15Speaker 2: It takes a lot to be It takes a village.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Well.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Also, but listen, man, you think you think Eddie did
- 13:21Speaker 2: it by himself. He had two of the best with him.
- 13:23Speaker 2: He had Keenan and he had freaking Uh and he
- 13:26Speaker 2: had Robert Townsend. I'm just saying.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Saying that what stand ups do is they try joke out.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It bombs. They go, I gotta work on it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: They tried another joke out, and they refine it, and
- 13:37Speaker 1: they refine it and they refine it and by the
- 13:38Speaker 1: time you probably hear in the cellar in New York City,
- 13:41Speaker 1: it's fucking great. This was like a kind of a
- 13:44Speaker 1: big swing with no rehearsal in front of millions of people.
- 13:47Speaker 2: It's either gonna it's gonna go one of two ways.
- 13:53Speaker 2: One way, you're sweating bullets.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Bullets dude, we get backstage, you'll see when you see this,
- 13:59Speaker 1: like they built this whole hospital set and we didn't.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I thought it was like we're going there and the Emmys,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you know, like anything. You get up and you get
- 14:04Speaker 1: at the microphone and you each say a sentence and
- 14:07Speaker 1: then we get backstage and they're like, okay, so when
- 14:10Speaker 1: you guys, when the curtain goes up, these these extras
- 14:13Speaker 1: are gonna run through with a stretcher and and uh
- 14:16Speaker 1: and you guys will come in and then you're gonna
- 14:17Speaker 1: come to these marks and then then they start giving
- 14:20Speaker 1: us like blocking and there it's like a countdown. I'm like, wait,
- 14:22Speaker 1: what what's happening with a stretcher? Like all this shit's
- 14:24Speaker 1: happening backstage. I can see Mindy Kaling starting and be like,
- 14:27Speaker 1: oh shit, we should have come to rehearsal. And mackay
- 14:30Speaker 1: Fifer's cool as a cucumber, cool as a cucumber.
- 14:33Speaker 2: He went to rehearsal.
- 14:34Speaker 1: No, I don't know if he went to rehearsal, but
- 14:35Speaker 1: he was like he's sitting there tunnel like, so, how's
- 14:37Speaker 1: Donald man? I'm like, bro, I cannot small talk right now,
- 14:39Speaker 1: Like we are about to go live.
- 14:48Speaker 2: What I was already.
- 14:49Speaker 1: God, he's gonna come on the podcast too. But McKay
- 14:51Speaker 1: was like chill, and I was like, I felt like
- 14:54Speaker 1: I was. I was trying to hold together because McKay
- 14:56Speaker 1: was so chill, too chill for me, because he was
- 14:59Speaker 1: trying to have a small talk mindy I can see
- 15:01Speaker 1: was kind of like, whoa, there's a stretcher, there's blocking.
- 15:03Speaker 1: We should have come to rehearsal. And I'm in the middle,
- 15:05Speaker 1: like you guys just got to say, like the setup sentences,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I gotta fucking crush this joke, and uh, it.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Was really funny. It was really funny.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Anyway, he's the sweetest guy and he wants to come
- 15:14Speaker 1: on the show and he asked about you.
- 15:16Speaker 2: He couldn't be nice to that guy. He's a great dude.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Man.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I've known him since New York City, before I left
- 15:22Speaker 2: New York City. We were young in New York City.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I remember I remember when he Oh my god, I
- 15:28Speaker 2: remember the heat when he popped in New York. Oh
- 15:30Speaker 2: my goodness, gracious, I remember everything.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Movie.
- 15:33Speaker 2: What was the movie that popped him? Well? He did?
- 15:37Speaker 2: I think it was fresh? Was it fresh?
- 15:41Speaker 4: Dan?
- 15:41Speaker 2: Will you check? That was his first big break. I
- 15:45Speaker 2: remember because we're because we're in the same age that
- 15:47Speaker 2: he like, all of a sudden the guns. It was
- 15:49Speaker 2: the one where they were selling guns and stuff like that,
- 15:52Speaker 2: and it was him and Fredro Star and then he did,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I know what you did? And then it just went on.
- 15:57Speaker 2: He was like, and I know what you did last summer?
- 16:00Speaker 2: He did that high school high wasn't paid full?
- 16:04Speaker 4: Was it no?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Paidful? As much like that's the Dope Ship with him
- 16:10Speaker 2: Wood and freaking camraon that ship. Oh my god. He
- 16:13Speaker 2: has one monologue in that movie That's the Fire Ship
- 16:17Speaker 2: where he just gets out of jail and he automatically
- 16:20Speaker 2: wants to go back into selling drugs and he gets
- 16:22Speaker 2: emotional about that ship. He's like, I love selling drugs, yo,
- 16:26Speaker 2: this motherfucker yo. Sweat of course.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Man.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Then there's a like he has a and he has
- 16:33Speaker 2: a very long career also man.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and then he did then he did a yard
- 16:37Speaker 1: like yeah he he But he's so real and just
- 16:40Speaker 1: the nicest person, except I didn't know how to tell him.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I didn't want to act nervous.
- 16:45Speaker 1: But he's like, literally we're like thirty seconds to the
- 16:47Speaker 1: curtain going up, and he's like, so how is Donald.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I'm like, bro, now.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Pace, I need to pace, and I need to say
- 16:56Speaker 1: like the lips, the tip of the teeth and the tongue.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And I was trying to make him go away. I'm like,
- 17:04Speaker 2: he's good, good, he's got kids. How was the kids?
- 17:06Speaker 1: They go, yeah, yeah, he's got kids. He goes, I
- 17:08Speaker 1: got two kids. I'm like that's great, that's great. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: he's like, how many kids? How many ms? Donald have him? Like, Bro,
- 17:13Speaker 1: I cannot he has six, but I can't tell.
- 17:16Speaker 2: He goes six. I'm like, I can't talk right now, Mackay.
- 17:21Speaker 4: I gotta get together.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But that's how cool he was about it. He didn't
- 17:25Speaker 1: give a fuck. It was like we were It was
- 17:27Speaker 1: like we were both like going to get coffee.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Right on, right on. I love it. We should talk
- 17:34Speaker 2: about our guests, guys, Brian baumb Gardner. Am I saying
- 17:38Speaker 2: that right? Daniel?
- 17:39Speaker 1: You know everything bomb Gardner from the offices here, And
- 17:44Speaker 1: that's exciting because we have a lot of I have
- 17:47Speaker 1: so many office questions.
- 17:48Speaker 2: What I have? I have? I have quite a few
- 17:51Speaker 2: office questions. Actually, yes, like you know, how did y'all
- 17:56Speaker 2: keep a straight face'll? You know, like that's a lot
- 17:59Speaker 2: of improms.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I want to know just people on our show always
- 18:03Speaker 1: ask like, how did you guys make it through that?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Well?
- 18:04Speaker 1: I want to ask how they made it through Steve
- 18:06Speaker 1: Carrell because I find him to be one of the
- 18:08Speaker 1: funniest people in the world and very.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Quick on his toes. He's a savvy individual.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I can talk to you forever. We have so much
- 18:15Speaker 1: to catch up on. But we should probably invite our
- 18:17Speaker 1: guests in Who's Waiting? Because I was a little bit tardy.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Six seven Stories show we made about a bunch of
- 18:27Speaker 5: dogs and nurses said.
- 18:31Speaker 2: He's the Stories news. No, so YadA here? Yeah?
- 18:41Speaker 1: What is hey?
- 18:46Speaker 2: What is really good with you? Brian?
- 18:50Speaker 4: Hello?
- 18:51Speaker 2: What is really good with you? Brian?
- 18:53Speaker 1: I'm so sorry we're tardy. I fucked up the timing
- 18:55Speaker 1: of this, and we're so honored to have you on
- 18:58Speaker 1: the show.
- 18:58Speaker 4: But now I follow, we're late, You're You're good? Are
- 19:01Speaker 4: we are we good?
- 19:02Speaker 1: Here?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Are you hearing me? Are you hear you?
- 19:04Speaker 2: You look much like yourself?
- 19:06Speaker 4: I look like myself. There you go.
- 19:09Speaker 2: You don't sound like you don't sound like the character Brian.
- 19:12Speaker 1: They don't seem simple and are already.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Disappointed he's a good actor. Is he's a good actor.
- 19:20Speaker 2: He he looks like like, yo, he's Kevin, dude, He's
- 19:25Speaker 2: totally Kevin in real life. Within two seconds, you're like, ship,
- 19:29Speaker 2: he's not fucking Kevin.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Does that happen to you, Brian? People like, please be
- 19:33Speaker 1: more like Kevin?
- 19:34Speaker 4: Uh? For sure? But I mean I do have to say, Zach,
- 19:37Speaker 4: it's nice to see you recently in a role that
- 19:40Speaker 4: that's like you. So I really appreciated Bad Monkey. You
- 19:48Speaker 4: actually play a character that's like you. That is my
- 19:50Speaker 4: true or at least your Hollywood reputation.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my true self. Lazy stupid guy.
- 19:58Speaker 1: No, he's like a drug to who spoilers? I can't
- 20:02Speaker 1: say all the spoilers. Okay, yeah, go on, Brian, what
- 20:06Speaker 1: what when people come up to you? Sorry, we shouldn
- 20:08Speaker 1: jump right in because I fucked up the time. We
- 20:10Speaker 1: don't have to know you're good when people come up
- 20:12Speaker 1: to you and you're you must be so recognized all
- 20:15Speaker 1: the time because the show is one of the most
- 20:16Speaker 1: beloved shows of all time. Do they are they surprised
- 20:19Speaker 1: when you like form normal sentences and aren't a simpleton?
- 20:26Speaker 4: I've little sometimes for sure. Yeah, you know, It's one
- 20:31Speaker 4: of these things where and I don't I don't know
- 20:36Speaker 4: you guys experience it, and I certainly don't want to
- 20:38Speaker 4: I don't want to overstate the case. But you know
- 20:42Speaker 4: what I say to people is The Office like we
- 20:45Speaker 4: were a hit, right, Like we were. We were big
- 20:48Speaker 4: on NBC and people watched and and you know, nominated
- 20:52Speaker 4: for the stuff and in some cases one but I
- 20:55Speaker 4: don't know of another show and television that actually once
- 21:00Speaker 4: we were done, we became much bigger, wow, like all
- 21:05Speaker 4: through you know, the streaming and the pandemic and the
- 21:09Speaker 4: Netflix and the whole thing. And it was sort of
- 21:12Speaker 4: like we've been done four or five years and and
- 21:16Speaker 4: and then I started getting mobbed in the airports, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 4: like it was this weird thing that is weird. It
- 21:22Speaker 4: sort of continued to grow, you know, way after I
- 21:28Speaker 4: think a whole I think there's.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Like maybe seven shows and you guys all came around
- 21:34Speaker 2: the same time. That grew strictly from And I was
- 21:38Speaker 2: talking about this earlier with our producers from DVD. Man,
- 21:42Speaker 2: if it wasn't for DVD sales back in the day,
- 21:45Speaker 2: man and The Office being the box set being on DVD,
- 21:51Speaker 2: it's right that's how people found you guys later on,
- 21:54Speaker 2: like you wasn't on Netflix. Well, we were looking at
- 21:58Speaker 2: we were looking at our notes and stuff like that,
- 22:00Speaker 2: and DVD, you guys weren't popular in the first season.
- 22:03Speaker 2: It wasn't I would say, like season three, Oh sure,
- 22:06Speaker 2: you guys took off, right, Yeah, DVD is what really
- 22:10Speaker 2: helped out.
- 22:12Speaker 4: If you ask me, do you to some extent, But
- 22:16Speaker 4: I mean, I think more significantly back then it was, uh,
- 22:21Speaker 4: it was the video iPod, Like we launched in right
- 22:26Speaker 4: as we started, and then there was the video iPod,
- 22:29Speaker 4: and you know, our our mutual bosses over there at
- 22:33Speaker 4: NBC Universal they put us probably as like an experiment,
- 22:38Speaker 4: like well you can have this little show for free
- 22:41Speaker 4: or whatever. Oh and then you know, you started being
- 22:46Speaker 4: able to download shows right back in the day a
- 22:49Speaker 4: dollar ninety nine or two ninety nine a show or whatever.
- 22:52Speaker 4: And we were like in the middle of the second
- 22:54Speaker 4: season and suddenly those lists started coming out like they
- 22:58Speaker 4: have now, like most streamed or whatever, and we were
- 23:00Speaker 4: like number one on that. It was like, wait, how
- 23:04Speaker 4: did that? What? Who's you know? And I think it
- 23:07Speaker 4: was young people with iPods that you know, found the
- 23:12Speaker 4: show sort of subversive and you know, different that they
- 23:18Speaker 4: could appeal to, and that's kind of where yeah, the
- 23:21Speaker 4: success of like our original run started it.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yet I just remember having that box set and at night,
- 23:28Speaker 2: me and my now wife playing season one through five.
- 23:33Speaker 4: All right.
- 23:34Speaker 2: We were still making Scrubs at the time, but to
- 23:36Speaker 2: go to bed, we would play season one through five
- 23:40Speaker 2: in the box set and just thinking, holy shit, how
- 23:43Speaker 2: have I been missing? I was on NBC with you guys,
- 23:46Speaker 2: How have I been missing this show? And being so
- 23:50Speaker 2: fucking phenomenal?
- 23:51Speaker 4: Man.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I think another generation also just found it continues to
- 23:55Speaker 1: find it, you know. I think it is the streaming
- 23:57Speaker 1: platform Netflix that it's all now how we're on peacocky Yeah,
- 24:01Speaker 1: but whenever it was on Netflix, right yeah? And so
- 24:04Speaker 1: it just because it which allowed a whole new generation
- 24:08Speaker 1: of young people to find it. And it's so subversive
- 24:11Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. It's so on PC in
- 24:13Speaker 1: a lot of ways. Yes, And I think that there's
- 24:16Speaker 1: a lot of young people who are like, oh, like this,
- 24:19Speaker 1: this can't kind of show couldn't really be on in
- 24:22Speaker 1: this way anywhere?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Right? Right?
- 24:25Speaker 4: Right?
- 24:25Speaker 5: Right?
- 24:25Speaker 2: Isn't it sort of refreshing?
- 24:27Speaker 1: I mean I was watching some episodes on the plane
- 24:29Speaker 1: because it's kind of on one of my go to
- 24:31Speaker 1: I want you to know, you're one of my go
- 24:33Speaker 1: to plane shows. When they when they have the office
- 24:35Speaker 1: on the on the plane, that's what I watch because
- 24:36Speaker 1: I know I'm gonna laugh.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I know I'm gonna laugh.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And also I love about it is like there is
- 24:42Speaker 1: a rough season arc obviously, but you can kind of
- 24:44Speaker 1: just bop in at any moment and you're gonna laugh
- 24:46Speaker 1: at whatever is happening.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Well that that's actually a big discovery. So this is
- 24:51Speaker 4: it's a little deep, and I don't I think meta
- 24:54Speaker 4: is the wrong word. But the show was built for
- 24:58Speaker 4: streaming before streaming exists. And I'll tell you what I mean.
- 25:03Speaker 4: He Greg Daniels, our creator, He wrote a lot of
- 25:07Speaker 4: like three and four episode arcs, right, So it's like
- 25:13Speaker 4: Idris Elba comes in to be this temporary boss and
- 25:17Speaker 4: he's there three or four episodes, and then he goes,
- 25:21Speaker 4: Jim goes and takes a job at the other paper.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Come and this lasts for a few episodes and it
- 25:26Speaker 4: goes or this relationship or this whatever. And so I
- 25:30Speaker 4: think that people, you know, it's twenty two minutes if
- 25:33Speaker 4: you're watching it or whatever, and it's like, Okay, we
- 25:36Speaker 4: can watch three episodes, have a little story, and then
- 25:39Speaker 4: be like, okay, we'll pick that up later. I think
- 25:41Speaker 4: some people have said that, but I think to your
- 25:45Speaker 4: point about the young people, I always said the subversive thing.
- 25:48Speaker 4: I think that sort of a new discovery for me
- 25:52Speaker 4: is that the relationship between an unreasonable boss who makes
- 25:59Speaker 4: his employees unreasonable embarrassing things is closely mirrored to an
- 26:07Speaker 4: unreasonable teacher who makes their students do unreasonable things while
- 26:12Speaker 4: sitting next to people who you don't choose to sit
- 26:14Speaker 4: next to, and you have projects and all of that.
- 26:17Speaker 4: And I think that relatability for high school, college, even
- 26:23Speaker 4: junior high, Like, I think that's a real, real thing.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And also dealing with people who like Steve Carrell, never
- 26:32Speaker 1: says the right thing, and everyone in their life has
- 26:36Speaker 1: someone who's older who doesn't say the right thing, and
- 26:39Speaker 1: they're and they're trying to educate them and why they
- 26:42Speaker 1: can't say that. But watching him fumble through, I mean,
- 26:48Speaker 1: he's so fucking perfect in that role that.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Every everyone that's nice.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean tell us about sorry, let's go back
- 26:58Speaker 1: to the very beginning and just tell us about because
- 27:00Speaker 1: I always like to hear audition stories.
- 27:03Speaker 2: How did you get this this amazing role? Well, so
- 27:07Speaker 2: you're a Northwestern graduate, aren't you?
- 27:09Speaker 4: So I went I went to no. So I went
- 27:12Speaker 4: to northwesterns. Like they're the Cherub program.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yes, that's for people who don't know. That's like their
- 27:19Speaker 1: high school summer program.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Yeah, which is like one year between junior and senior year.
- 27:23Speaker 4: And I did that and that was where for me
- 27:28Speaker 4: because one of the things that I talk about people
- 27:30Speaker 4: when I'm talking to them is like, when for you
- 27:33Speaker 4: did it become like, oh, this is what I want
- 27:36Speaker 4: to do as opposed to a hobby. And maybe that's
- 27:38Speaker 4: because for me, like it was like, oh, I'm going
- 27:40Speaker 4: to do this play in school, I'm gonna, you know,
- 27:43Speaker 4: audition for this or whatever. But I just felt like
- 27:45Speaker 4: it was an activity or I don't know what helped
- 27:48Speaker 4: me get into college. But then I'll be a lawyer
- 27:51Speaker 4: or whatever. And that was the moment for me where
- 27:53Speaker 4: I was like, oh, like creating a character and objectives
- 27:59Speaker 4: and all of the physical and I'm gonna do voice.
- 28:04Speaker 4: And I was like, Oh, this is like a thing.
- 28:07Speaker 4: And that's where I decided. I went to SMU in Dallas,
- 28:12Speaker 4: and I think the thing for me, which I don't
- 28:14Speaker 4: know if it's unique or not, but I never I'm
- 28:20Speaker 4: curious about you guys, like I never thought truly, I
- 28:24Speaker 4: never thought about film and television, Like I watched television
- 28:29Speaker 4: and I watched movies, but there was a disassociation for
- 28:34Speaker 4: it was like I'm a theater guy. Like that's what
- 28:37Speaker 4: I'm doing, and that was sort of all I wanted
- 28:40Speaker 4: to do. I didn't have any and it wasn't like
- 28:44Speaker 4: I thought I couldn't or I don't know. There just
- 28:46Speaker 4: was like a consciousness thing for me, Like I never
- 28:49Speaker 4: was like I'm going to audition for this commercial or
- 28:51Speaker 4: this TV show or whatever. So I was doing theater
- 28:55Speaker 4: and then visited Los Angeles and well, and also lived
- 29:01Speaker 4: doing eight shows a week in the theater and like
- 29:04Speaker 4: this is not easy for the rest of my life.
- 29:09Speaker 4: So I was primarily based in Minneapolis, and I would
- 29:13Speaker 4: say that, you know, there's the Guthrie Theater there, which
- 29:16Speaker 4: is like a huge regional theater. And I was traveling
- 29:18Speaker 4: around and doing shows, touring some of New York and
- 29:22Speaker 4: Chicago and San Francisco and Dallas and you know, sort
- 29:26Speaker 4: of doing that and I was getting jobs, and then
- 29:31Speaker 4: was like, okay, I think I think I want to
- 29:35Speaker 4: for I just fell in love with Los Angeles, like
- 29:38Speaker 4: the weather, like the city, like city outre nineties in
- 29:42Speaker 4: Westwood at a coffee bean, was like, wow, this. You
- 29:46Speaker 4: don't get this in Minneapolis. And so you know, I
- 29:52Speaker 4: struggled doing shows for not a lot of people, or
- 29:57Speaker 4: doing a lot of shows.
- 30:00Speaker 2: When I how did you make a living when you
- 30:02Speaker 2: moved out to La.
- 30:04Speaker 4: So well, this is my point, which I was a
- 30:07Speaker 4: bunch of excuses. And then to say I met the
- 30:10Speaker 4: folks on the office just a couple of months after
- 30:12Speaker 4: I moved. Oh wow, So I.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Don't they want to put a disclaimer to the audience
- 30:20Speaker 1: that don't do that.
- 30:21Speaker 2: But that doesn't happen.
- 30:24Speaker 4: It doesn't, It really does. It doesn't. But I will
- 30:28Speaker 4: say this, and this is kind of a new discovery
- 30:31Speaker 4: for me, which is I I think the fact that
- 30:35Speaker 4: I hadn't been here for that show really helped me
- 30:41Speaker 4: because I was so I wasn't like, there was no nerves.
- 30:46Speaker 4: I wasn't nervous, and there's sort of every step along
- 30:49Speaker 4: the way, I was like, well, of course this is
- 30:50Speaker 4: going to happen, Like I didn't have that like self
- 30:54Speaker 4: doubt or like feeling like this is the most important
- 30:58Speaker 4: thing if I don't get it, like I only.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Thought even though you moved here, you would knew you
- 31:03Speaker 1: would still be like, holy shit, this could be life changing.
- 31:06Speaker 4: No, it's weird. I don't know why. I can't really
- 31:09Speaker 4: explain why, but the but I was but that that
- 31:14Speaker 4: part was certainly lucky. But think about this too, though.
- 31:18Speaker 4: When we started right, so I was hired in let
- 31:22Speaker 4: me get the math right. The pilot was like February
- 31:28Speaker 4: of two thousand and four, between February of two thousand
- 31:33Speaker 4: and four and September or you know, August when we
- 31:40Speaker 4: came back to work of two thousand and five, so
- 31:42Speaker 4: like over a year and a half. We shot six episodes.
- 31:46Speaker 4: So when Donald was talking about like we were, we
- 31:50Speaker 4: only shot six. You know, we shot the pilot and
- 31:53Speaker 4: then we shot five more and then it didn't air
- 31:57Speaker 4: until you know, like spring of five. So it was
- 32:01Speaker 4: over a year that it aired after we shot the pilot,
- 32:04Speaker 4: So it had start right, It wasn't it very slow,
- 32:07Speaker 4: So it wasn't they hit off the again.
- 32:09Speaker 2: NBC is very you know what shout out to NBC
- 32:13Speaker 2: back in the day, they don't do that no more.
- 32:15Speaker 2: They don't do that no more. Well, I mean Extended Family.
- 32:20Speaker 2: We shot one season. It took us two years to
- 32:22Speaker 2: make that show, and we went to a strike.
- 32:25Speaker 1: And they don't and the network doesn't have patients for
- 32:28Speaker 1: you not doing well now now back.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Then they didn't. Back then, if you had ten million viewers,
- 32:33Speaker 2: they were like, you know what.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Sel Yeah, well now too.
- 32:39Speaker 2: I don't think they got much patience if you have
- 32:41Speaker 2: ten million.
- 32:42Speaker 1: I was just saw Rob Reiner on a clip of
- 32:45Speaker 1: Rob Reiner talking about Seinfeld. I didn't know that he
- 32:48Speaker 1: was a producer of Seinfeld, which he is, and he
- 32:50Speaker 1: was talking about how it was not a big hit
- 32:52Speaker 1: at all, in fact that he had to go beg
- 32:55Speaker 1: beg beg them to keep it on the.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Air because the first whatever five or six didn't do
- 33:00Speaker 2: very well.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Yeah, our stories are very similar in this regard. So
- 33:05Speaker 4: I am told. What I am told is that the
- 33:09Speaker 4: only reason we got to make more than a pilot.
- 33:11Speaker 4: They have the what do you call them, the testing Yes,
- 33:18Speaker 4: so they bring people in and they have people test
- 33:21Speaker 4: and it did not test well except for one room,
- 33:25Speaker 4: which was they had one room which were the assistants
- 33:30Speaker 4: at NBC. So like the people who were like secretaries
- 33:35Speaker 4: and low level development people, they sort of put them
- 33:39Speaker 4: in like okay, why don't you weigh in? And those
- 33:43Speaker 4: young people liked it, and I was told the same
- 33:45Speaker 4: thing happened with Seinfeld. So they decided to give it,
- 33:48Speaker 4: give us a chance.
- 33:49Speaker 1: It's amazing when you watch it now to go like,
- 33:51Speaker 1: how could you know any there's so many stories in
- 33:54Speaker 1: Hollywood of course, of like, how could you not think
- 33:57Speaker 1: this is genius? It was so it.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Didn't make it.
- 34:02Speaker 1: But also it is so unique. It is so unique.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Obviously there had been the British Office, right, so we
- 34:07Speaker 1: had those of us. I loved that, and plenty of
- 34:10Speaker 1: us had a had a frame of reference. And I
- 34:13Speaker 1: remember thinking, how the hell? I mean, Steve Correll's genius,
- 34:16Speaker 1: of course, but how is he gonna top what Ricky
- 34:18Speaker 1: Gervais is doing. It's so it's so unique, and it's
- 34:21Speaker 1: so it.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Was also so also it was so graphic, and I
- 34:26Speaker 2: mean and dirty, like the ship he said yes on
- 34:29Speaker 2: HBO was like they were going to they were going
- 34:31Speaker 2: to get away with that.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And also it was so English of course, so how
- 34:36Speaker 1: how does this get americanized? And and and I was so,
- 34:39Speaker 1: and then it does how many episodes actually reflect the
- 34:44Speaker 1: office episodes or the British only the pilot.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Only the pilot, yes, which which Greg Daniel said, which
- 34:52Speaker 4: I learned this much later. He did that so that
- 34:58Speaker 4: he wouldn't get notes from the network on the script.
- 35:02Speaker 4: So what he did was he spent the time on
- 35:08Speaker 4: the cast, on the characters, on the world. So he
- 35:12Speaker 4: considered himself like world building of what dunder Mifflin was
- 35:16Speaker 4: and the relation, you know, like where everybody sat in there.
- 35:21Speaker 4: It was all very planned out in terms of the
- 35:25Speaker 4: type of characters they were and how they would interact
- 35:28Speaker 4: and you know, who they would associate with or not
- 35:31Speaker 4: associate with, or be forced to be next to someone
- 35:34Speaker 4: like Angela and I who really didn't didn't belong. But
- 35:38Speaker 4: there was a barrier in front of the only barrier
- 35:40Speaker 4: in the whole office in between us and all of
- 35:44Speaker 4: that stuff.
- 35:45Speaker 1: It wasn't a set, right, wasn't it a real building?
- 35:48Speaker 4: So the so we moved, Oh, the first six episodes,
- 35:54Speaker 4: there was there's an old God you guys, I'm sure
- 35:57Speaker 4: wouldn't know it. It was. I think it's was called
- 35:59Speaker 4: like Culver Studios.
- 36:01Speaker 2: It was like it's yeah, it's still there.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Our shut did it's like down.
- 36:09Speaker 1: We shot the last episode of the season of Scrubs there.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Okay, so we ate lunch on the sound stage. And
- 36:17Speaker 4: so the production offices for that building is under Befalin,
- 36:22Speaker 4: so upstairs when you go upstairs and like where the
- 36:25Speaker 4: production offices would be, that that was our set. And
- 36:30Speaker 4: then correct said the first six and then everybody said
- 36:38Speaker 4: to him like we can't sustain this, like we're on
- 36:41Speaker 4: a second floor, like there's nowhere to move around. And
- 36:47Speaker 4: so he he was like, okay, but it's not changing.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Like there was so much that was like about realism
- 36:53Speaker 4: and really, you know, he wanted everything like ultra reel.
- 36:56Speaker 4: So he recreated that space exactly exactly clay on us
- 37:01Speaker 4: on the middle of a sound stage out in Van
- 37:05Speaker 4: Nuy's panoramic city. And the only thing he did, and
- 37:09Speaker 4: it's something crazy like this, like this is not an exaggeration.
- 37:13Speaker 4: He added eighteen inches to the conference room because he
- 37:21Speaker 4: want he was he was the camera people were like,
- 37:23Speaker 4: you have to give us somewhere to stand, like we can't,
- 37:27Speaker 4: like we can't fit you know, a cast of sixteen
- 37:31Speaker 4: and you know, two camera guys and a boom Mike
- 37:35Speaker 4: guy and all that in this space, and he was like, well,
- 37:38Speaker 4: we can't change it because it's been a stat you know.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Anyway, So I was completely fooled now where because I
- 37:44Speaker 1: always had it in my mind that it was in
- 37:47Speaker 1: that building that we see.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Where's that building?
- 37:49Speaker 4: So that building is is? So that is the exterior
- 37:52Speaker 4: of the Sataquoi. I mean it's on Satokoy is what
- 37:57Speaker 4: it's called? Way, oh, Chandler Valley Studios. Yes, and yes,
- 38:01Speaker 4: that the exterior. There were two two independent sound stages,
- 38:06Speaker 4: and the exterior of one of the sound stages. That
- 38:08Speaker 4: is it? That is that is right?
- 38:10Speaker 2: Wow, it must become it must have become a tourist destination.
- 38:14Speaker 4: It is. Yeah, yeah, I mean I.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Was so fooled by the way I my whole life.
- 38:20Speaker 1: My whole life, my whole life, my whole life, my
- 38:26Speaker 1: whole time as a audience member, I believed you were.
- 38:29Speaker 1: I mean, this is so silly, because I'm a filmmaker
- 38:31Speaker 1: and that is what I do for a living. But
- 38:32Speaker 1: I was convinced that you were in that actual building
- 38:34Speaker 1: in the valley somewhere.
- 38:36Speaker 4: No, well, I mean sort of, but not. It didn't
- 38:40Speaker 4: look like that yees.
- 38:41Speaker 1: So, I mean that's the the warehouse I could tell
- 38:44Speaker 1: was a sound stage because that was kind of just
- 38:45Speaker 1: like a sound stage.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I couldn't pull it. I couldn't pull you
- 38:50Speaker 4: on that.
- 38:50Speaker 1: But yes, no, I mean the warehouse is kind of
- 38:53Speaker 1: like what if we just put it in the sound stage?
- 38:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah no, but he he you know, what do
- 39:01Speaker 4: you call it? Drop drop ceilings? With the with the
- 39:05Speaker 4: tile I'm like gesturing. I don't know if we're in
- 39:08Speaker 4: on video, but you know, the.
- 39:09Speaker 2: The it looks like you're pushing DJ down.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Oh yeah, like you can put, you can push, you
- 39:14Speaker 4: can put. Yeah, it looks like you're raising the roof
- 39:17Speaker 4: up down up down. Uh, you know the ceiling tiles move. Yeah.
- 39:23Speaker 4: So like no, they put that in so, you know,
- 39:27Speaker 4: on even on the sound stage, because he wanted it
- 39:29Speaker 4: to look the same. He wanted it to feel constricted
- 39:33Speaker 4: and and tight. Let's take a break.
- 39:35Speaker 2: We'll be right back after these fine words.
- 39:44Speaker 1: You know, we always get asked this on Scrubs, tell
- 39:46Speaker 1: us about not about the improv, how the improv was handled.
- 39:51Speaker 1: You know, we on Scrubs, you know we sort of
- 39:54Speaker 1: Bill Lawrence's rule was I definitely want it good as
- 39:57Speaker 1: written and don't and make sure you don't skip that.
- 39:59Speaker 1: I want, I definitely want to have a great version
- 40:02Speaker 1: as written and then time permitting, you guys can fuck
- 40:05Speaker 1: around and a lot of funny stuff came out of that.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Was that the same kind of vibe as you guys?
- 40:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, how was explained to us which and
- 40:14Speaker 4: maybe you're just now wanting to share this, how was
- 40:17Speaker 4: explained to us, right, is that we still have mega
- 40:21Speaker 4: conglomerate studios and ge or Comcast or whoever he was
- 40:27Speaker 4: the remember, oh gee he was it.
- 40:30Speaker 2: That was the one man. But we but we had
- 40:35Speaker 2: left us in with spaceship. I'm just gonna.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Go on he uh no. So the scripts had to
- 40:44Speaker 4: be approved, like someone had to say it was okay
- 40:47Speaker 4: to say whatever the words were. And so they always
- 40:50Speaker 4: wanted us to say what the words were because they
- 40:53Speaker 4: wanted to make sure that we had a version that
- 40:56Speaker 4: was approved. But we all one hundred percent of the time,
- 40:59Speaker 4: we we changed and they started doing what did they
- 41:02Speaker 4: call a candy bag, especially for the little like direct
- 41:07Speaker 4: to the camera, you know, like you're being interviewed stuff.
- 41:11Speaker 4: We would have like eight versions of those, which essentially
- 41:17Speaker 4: was delivering the same idea, either opinion on what was
- 41:22Speaker 4: going on, or sometimes it would be like, well, we
- 41:25Speaker 4: can't really decide how Kevin would feel about whatever, so
- 41:30Speaker 4: give us both and then we'll sort of put it
- 41:33Speaker 4: all together. You know. Would he be delighted by this
- 41:36Speaker 4: or would he not understand it, or would he you know,
- 41:39Speaker 4: like whatever. So they would sort of build things, build
- 41:45Speaker 4: things in that in that way. Yeah, and that's fun.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Those direct to the camera things. You can just see
- 41:49Speaker 1: where there was so much opportunity there to riff where
- 41:52Speaker 1: you could be like, you know, because then you can
- 41:54Speaker 1: you can very easily get what's written. Okay, I got it,
- 41:56Speaker 1: I got what's right. Now let me just go off
- 41:58Speaker 1: and just see where my brain goes.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Yeah, totally. Yeah, it was Uh, that was pretty special.
- 42:06Speaker 4: But yeah, we we you know, the amount of whatever
- 42:09Speaker 4: improv got into an episode obviously just varied per per
- 42:14Speaker 4: you know, per episode, but but we were always given
- 42:16Speaker 4: an opportunity even even the scenes too.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Was anybody brave enough to go against Steve Man?
- 42:25Speaker 4: I mean it was really hard, and it's all it
- 42:27Speaker 4: was also hard just because of the structure, like he
- 42:32Speaker 4: you know, he's you know, especially like I mean, you
- 42:34Speaker 4: think about sort of the quote unquote famous scenes in
- 42:37Speaker 4: the conference room. So he's standing, you're sitting. There's sort
- 42:42Speaker 4: of no, I mean, you're already out of power imbalance there.
- 42:45Speaker 4: And then you have him who might be truly, like,
- 42:50Speaker 4: I honestly believe this the greatest improviser ever. And the
- 42:54Speaker 4: reason I say that is because not only is he funny,
- 42:58Speaker 4: not only can he come up with any thing in
- 43:00Speaker 4: the moment, but what he does, which without naming any
- 43:04Speaker 4: names other people have trouble with, is he's always on story,
- 43:09Speaker 4: like on topic. Like he's never going you know, he's
- 43:13Speaker 4: never saying something that's like, well, Michael wouldn't say that,
- 43:16Speaker 4: or but he also understands like what the whole of
- 43:21Speaker 4: the script, the individual episode or the season that we're on,
- 43:25Speaker 4: like where he's trying to get and he's just yeah,
- 43:28Speaker 4: I mean he's.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I love watching clips of the bloopers. I mean, I
- 43:31Speaker 1: know scrubs fans love watching scrub yeahs. But when I
- 43:35Speaker 1: saw recently, my Instagram knows now that I love office bloopers,
- 43:40Speaker 1: and I saw see where he was explaining his home
- 43:42Speaker 1: entertainment system to Jim and watching his Carrell try and
- 43:48Speaker 1: he couldn't get through it. It was so funny watching
- 43:50Speaker 1: him not be able to get through his improv.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Probably the closest, you know, some of your audience may
- 44:01Speaker 4: have heard this before, but probably the closest to like
- 44:04Speaker 4: standing standing up to him, which wasn't even standing up
- 44:07Speaker 4: to him was if you remember the episode which, by
- 44:10Speaker 4: the way, can you even say the title of this
- 44:12Speaker 4: episode these days on television? But gay witch hunt? When
- 44:16Speaker 4: when when he kisses Oscar? That was improved? That was
- 44:23Speaker 4: the kiss? The kiss? Where was h r? Yes, listen
- 44:31Speaker 4: is the kiss?
- 44:32Speaker 2: When this happened, Oscar had such a lawsuit.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Everybody lawsuit against more than anyone I know, but everybody outed.
- 44:43Speaker 2: He was outed in the freaking room.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Brian, Brian, is there anyone that works there that doesn't
- 44:53Speaker 1: have a lawsuit against under.
- 44:54Speaker 4: No, No, there's Hilrius. The lawsuit every every which way,
- 44:58Speaker 4: at least against Steve and probably several characters as well. Yeah,
- 45:05Speaker 4: I mean, god, God bless Greg you know he You know,
- 45:12Speaker 4: we had such a huge cast and it never got smaller,
- 45:15Speaker 4: It just kept getting bigger. He would find a different
- 45:18Speaker 4: energy that he wanted to bring in from Ellie Kemper
- 45:20Speaker 4: or Ed Helms. You know that would just sort of change,
- 45:24Speaker 4: you know, he would sort of add that ingredient in,
- 45:26Speaker 4: it would change. But you know it was it was
- 45:29Speaker 4: an office where everyone at one point in time should
- 45:32Speaker 4: have been fired, like Kevin really like he was fired
- 45:36Speaker 4: in the last episode.
- 45:39Speaker 1: You guys had to One thing that's unique about the
- 45:41Speaker 1: office that people weren't actors might not realize is, you know,
- 45:45Speaker 1: when we do our scenes on scrubs, we don't have
- 45:48Speaker 1: to be there when people are doing their other stuff.
- 45:51Speaker 1: You guys are one hundred percent of the time background.
- 45:54Speaker 4: Yes.
- 45:54Speaker 1: What was that like, I mean what, that's a very
- 45:59Speaker 1: that's a very new that's a very unique situation, and
- 46:02Speaker 1: you have hours where you're just background.
- 46:04Speaker 4: Yes, And that was again, that was a little bit
- 46:07Speaker 4: for me. I mean I I you know, I had
- 46:10Speaker 4: booked a couple of other you know, smaller jobs or whatever.
- 46:14Speaker 4: But you know, this was happened very quickly out of
- 46:17Speaker 4: the gate, and I think early on it was my
- 46:20Speaker 4: expectation that this was how it was because I had
- 46:22Speaker 4: come from theater and if you were rehearsing something, you're
- 46:25Speaker 4: always there and then you know, maybe they spend some
- 46:27Speaker 4: extra time on some other scenes. But no, it was
- 46:31Speaker 4: you know now, it really was like everybody had a
- 46:36Speaker 4: schedule of the number one on the call sheet, you know,
- 46:40Speaker 4: because because everybody was there every day all day twelve fourteen,
- 46:48Speaker 4: you know, plus hours. I mean we were doing we
- 46:51Speaker 4: were doing like sixty hours a week, and you know,
- 46:55Speaker 4: unless Michael had to go see Jan in New York
- 46:59Speaker 4: or whatever, especially early on, like we were just all there.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Was a Crossford puzzles, what was your secret?
- 47:06Speaker 4: You know, well we were you know, we were doing
- 47:09Speaker 4: thirty episodes there for a while a year, so I
- 47:13Speaker 4: was paying bills. Uh, Like we were paying bills. There
- 47:18Speaker 4: wasn't a whole People always ask about, like what were
- 47:22Speaker 4: the pranks? Like we weren't really pranky, but we did
- 47:26Speaker 4: have Uh, I don't even know what it was. It
- 47:30Speaker 4: wasn't It wasn't Google, I don't know, AOL instant messenger
- 47:35Speaker 4: or something so we could like pop something up computers
- 47:40Speaker 4: and the computers worked.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like that would a gutten a couple
- 47:44Speaker 2: of people fire. Definitely I would have been kicked.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I would have been fired. Look at this totally inappropriate means.
- 47:55Speaker 2: What did I do wrong? It's just it's just a
- 47:58Speaker 2: freaking egg quip that must be because you're like you're like,
- 48:01Speaker 2: oh my god.
- 48:01Speaker 1: As much as you love the show and you're grateful
- 48:03Speaker 1: to be on the show, at a certain point you're like,
- 48:05Speaker 1: oh my god, I have to get out of this.
- 48:06Speaker 1: I'm in the background and you don't need me. Is
- 48:08Speaker 1: there is there a Brian lookalike?
- 48:10Speaker 2: The con.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Well, we did, we were, we did joke things. Things
- 48:18Speaker 4: started changing a little bit as we went on, I
- 48:20Speaker 4: mean ten years that early on it was like, so, guys, wait,
- 48:25Speaker 4: no one ever goes to the bathroom, Like, no one
- 48:28Speaker 4: has never in the other room making a cup of
- 48:31Speaker 4: coffee while this is going on, Like, I really think
- 48:35Speaker 4: Kevin should be somewhere.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Kevin have the ship mindy and uh and and
- 48:41Speaker 2: no fact they had it lucky because they were in
- 48:42Speaker 2: a different room. And so did the dude Creed, right did.
- 48:46Speaker 4: We No, so Creed was in our So here is
- 48:49Speaker 4: here's the here's the little nerdy insider info, right because
- 48:53Speaker 4: we Greg had come, not had come directly, but he
- 48:57Speaker 4: had worked on SNL and he was really wanting collaboration.
- 49:01Speaker 4: So like I directed. There were a lot of writers.
- 49:04Speaker 4: Here's the thing. Anyone who was in that other office,
- 49:07Speaker 4: they were writers. They were upstairs writing, so like Paul Lieberstein,
- 49:12Speaker 4: Toby Mindy, Kayling, bj Novak, there were the writers, so
- 49:17Speaker 4: they didn't have to be there until like a conference
- 49:19Speaker 4: room or you know, they would drift in for some
- 49:22Speaker 4: important you know, group scene or whatever. But yeah, they were,
- 49:26Speaker 4: they would, they would go up to the writers. Paul Liberstein,
- 49:31Speaker 4: he's one.
- 49:32Speaker 1: He's so good. I mean, they were every every everyone
- 49:34Speaker 1: is so good. But he was also one of the
- 49:36Speaker 1: main writers of the show.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, and he was actually when Greg went to launch,
- 49:40Speaker 4: because Greg went with Mike Sure. Mike Sure was a
- 49:43Speaker 4: writer who played Mos. By the way, he was not
- 49:47Speaker 4: there very much at all. Yeah, when Greg Greg launched
- 49:53Speaker 4: Parks and Rec. And when he launched Parks and Rec,
- 49:56Speaker 4: Paul Liberstein actually was showrunner for a period of time.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's You guys have some great directors, man,
- 50:05Speaker 2: like your directors. I'm sure some of them.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Some of them for sure.
- 50:10Speaker 2: But then some of them are like freaking winners.
- 50:15Speaker 1: And oh yeah, I mean you mean the guest appearance
- 50:17Speaker 1: directors didn't Yeah what was that about? Like he just
- 50:21Speaker 1: loved the show and they were like I wanted to,
- 50:23Speaker 1: I want to, But.
- 50:24Speaker 2: They were definitely coming for you, Brian, that's exactly there.
- 50:27Speaker 4: The rumor was, and I it's been so long I
- 50:31Speaker 4: was told, I believe God, I'm like making excuses that
- 50:36Speaker 4: JJ Abrams wanted to direct a season and Greg Greg
- 50:41Speaker 4: preferred the model where we had a different director every week.
- 50:45Speaker 4: So J. J. Abrams came in. Harold Ramis did ye,
- 50:50Speaker 4: I don't know, four or five, and some big ones didn't.
- 50:54Speaker 2: It was always interesting. It was just always interesting to
- 50:57Speaker 2: see the director's names. It would be like what they
- 51:01Speaker 2: got his.
- 51:01Speaker 4: Doing right right?
- 51:03Speaker 2: Ken Whittingham directed, Yeah, some of the same direct I'm.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Curious, maybe Dane, you could ask chat Cheapt. This is
- 51:10Speaker 1: a good chat cheapt question. Which directors both directed scrubs
- 51:14Speaker 1: and and uh.
- 51:17Speaker 2: In the office. I know Ken Winningham was one.
- 51:19Speaker 4: Ken you must have had Koppus.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Maybe once or twice.
- 51:23Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 51:25Speaker 2: No, we never had Paul.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Oh, you never had Paul. That's surprises.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Let's take a break.
- 51:30Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. All right,
- 51:39Speaker 1: So let's talk about your chili for a second. Did
- 51:41Speaker 1: you have anything to do with I mean, did this
- 51:44Speaker 1: come out of the blue or do you really make
- 51:46Speaker 1: a good chili?
- 51:47Speaker 4: Well, you're talking about there was the episode.
- 51:50Speaker 2: I'm with the episode when it first.
- 51:51Speaker 1: I know you made it, you wrote a book, but
- 51:53Speaker 1: but like both like.
- 51:56Speaker 4: To the writers that writers, yeah, and you know I
- 52:03Speaker 4: I do, so I do think. All right, here here's
- 52:07Speaker 4: my here's my cheeseball pitch for you. Right. That the
- 52:10Speaker 4: reason that people respond to the show, and particularly like
- 52:15Speaker 4: during a global pandemic, right, is the last line of
- 52:20Speaker 4: the show. I'm getting serious with you for a second,
- 52:22Speaker 4: but the last line of the show that Greg Daniels
- 52:25Speaker 4: wrote the last episode. So he wrote it. Pam says,
- 52:29Speaker 4: you know that She's asked like, why would they make
- 52:32Speaker 4: a documentary of his paper company or whatever? And her
- 52:35Speaker 4: answer is there's beauty and ordinary things. Isn't that kind
- 52:40Speaker 4: of the point. And so for me, when you look
- 52:45Speaker 4: at sort of the totality everybody, you know, a lot
- 52:47Speaker 4: of people are mean. There's Michael says, inappropriate things you
- 52:51Speaker 4: could sue, but like there is sort of a genuine
- 52:54Speaker 4: kindness and a celebration of very small moments. Right. It's
- 53:01Speaker 4: like the opposite of twenty four or whatever, you know,
- 53:05Speaker 4: some big spy show or whatever. And so to me,
- 53:09Speaker 4: part of that chili thing is that it is like
- 53:12Speaker 4: this guy does this one thing that many people in
- 53:17Speaker 4: America around the world do. They make a great chili.
- 53:20Speaker 4: They're proud of it. They are celebrated by their friends
- 53:24Speaker 4: and family doing it, and this is the thing that
- 53:26Speaker 4: gives them great pride on the weekends and maybe goes
- 53:30Speaker 4: to chili festivals and participates in competitions, and he believes
- 53:34Speaker 4: this is the thing he does best. Now it's a comedy,
- 53:36Speaker 4: so he spills it on the floor and you know,
- 53:39Speaker 4: there's genius physical comedy by me whatever. Yes, but the
- 53:44Speaker 4: idea is like that celebration. To me, that is in
- 53:49Speaker 4: some ways like because people talk about it all the time,
- 53:52Speaker 4: but it is like a physical embodiment of that thing
- 53:57Speaker 4: that the show is trying to sell break, which is
- 54:00Speaker 4: like just a teeny victory or you know, a great
- 54:05Speaker 4: thing that an ordinary person does.
- 54:08Speaker 2: So that led to you genuinely getting into.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Chili, it did? I mean it started as a joke.
- 54:14Speaker 1: I'll be honest, right, you were associated with chili because
- 54:17Speaker 1: of the show. Yeah, Like I made like I had
- 54:19Speaker 1: never made chili before. The people I associate you with chili?
- 54:25Speaker 4: Oh one hun, do you go.
- 54:28Speaker 1: To cookoffs and stuff like, oh yeah, he's made a book.
- 54:30Speaker 1: You wrote a bullets.
- 54:32Speaker 4: A cookbook about chili.
- 54:34Speaker 2: But did you write the cookbook about chili?
- 54:36Speaker 1: Yes, so you must have collected collected yes, yes, yes,
- 54:40Speaker 1: so I put some of my but I made it one.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Let's take a shout out to it. Seriously good chili
- 54:45Speaker 1: cookbook chili recipes, all right, yes.
- 54:48Speaker 4: One hundred and seventy seven. Well, actually, I'll tell you
- 54:51Speaker 4: that my funniest interaction was I was traveling, I was alone.
- 54:55Speaker 4: I was in a hotel bar, sitting there and like
- 54:59Speaker 4: the hat on like he and I just finished eating
- 55:02Speaker 4: and the bartender like it had been cleared away, and
- 55:06Speaker 4: the bartender comes by and sets something down in front
- 55:09Speaker 4: of me. I don't even really look or process. I
- 55:12Speaker 4: just sort of look up and I'm like, oh no, no,
- 55:15Speaker 4: I've already eaten, and he kind of leans down. It's
- 55:19Speaker 4: like the fifties, the forties, I don't know what kind
- 55:21Speaker 4: of movie, but he just kind of leans on the
- 55:23Speaker 4: bar and he's like, this is from the woman at
- 55:26Speaker 4: the end of the bar, and it's yes, it's a
- 55:27Speaker 4: bowl of chili. Like that is what I don't get
- 55:31Speaker 4: set a drake, I get like bowls of chili.
- 55:34Speaker 1: That's hilarious. That's what happens. People associate you with it,
- 55:38Speaker 1: and it's like a it was smart of you to
- 55:40Speaker 1: lean into that, because have you become good at making
- 55:43Speaker 1: chili at this point?
- 55:44Speaker 4: Yeah? Well now yeah, no, I like and I do
- 55:47Speaker 4: really ENLiGHT I do really like it. Well, and that's
- 55:50Speaker 4: where the inspiration for the book came is. I got
- 55:53Speaker 4: invited to and this thing is not like a couple
- 55:57Speaker 4: of years. It's now I don't know how many, it's
- 55:59Speaker 4: over fifty years. Actually happens at the end of September.
- 56:02Speaker 4: I'm not going this year, but the World Championship Chili
- 56:06Speaker 4: Cookoff you have to win like your state region. It's
- 56:09Speaker 4: in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and so I went there,
- 56:14Speaker 4: got to know them. They asked me to judge the thing,
- 56:20Speaker 4: and then I was I was like sort of blown
- 56:22Speaker 4: away by oh wait, this is chicken, this is white,
- 56:27Speaker 4: this is ver day like a green chili, and all
- 56:30Speaker 4: this type of stuff. And so we sort of put
- 56:33Speaker 4: that together for fun. But I know, I really do
- 56:36Speaker 4: enjoy it and the the culture of it too.
- 56:39Speaker 2: I let you go, okay, but before we go, I
- 56:41Speaker 2: do love a good chow. I just wanted to say
- 56:43Speaker 2: I do. I just want to appreciate.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Okay, you want the audience to know that you love
- 56:46Speaker 1: Chili audience, have you registered the Donald audience?
- 56:51Speaker 2: Dear audience, I do love.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Now now I just read this in the notes. In
- 56:57Speaker 1: twenty twenty alone, Americans cum relatively streamed more than fifty
- 57:02Speaker 1: seven billion minutes of the Office, making it the most
- 57:07Speaker 1: watched show of the year. That was during Lockdown. It
- 57:09Speaker 1: was like the most watched show of Lockdown. I'm assuming, yes,
- 57:14Speaker 1: that's insane. So then that tell me about you have
- 57:18Speaker 1: your own podcast. It's obviously different from the Office Ladies.
- 57:21Speaker 1: They the Office Ladies were the inspiration for us, by
- 57:24Speaker 1: the way, we I'm sure they were. That popped off
- 57:27Speaker 1: and people started approaching Donald and I and it was
- 57:30Speaker 1: it was and we said, okay, that sounds fun. Shoot
- 57:32Speaker 1: the shit with Donald about episodes. That sounds great. But
- 57:36Speaker 1: you have your own podcast. What's tell people about that
- 57:39Speaker 1: who don't know about it so they can find.
- 57:40Speaker 4: It off the beat is what it's called. You know
- 57:43Speaker 4: it started? Actually, so I did a Spotify exclusive podcast
- 57:53Speaker 4: that started right about the time that Jenna and Angelas
- 57:56Speaker 4: started Office Ladies, and it was called Oral History of
- 58:00Speaker 4: the Office and it was totally different than what you
- 58:04Speaker 4: guys do and what they were doing. What was curious
- 58:08Speaker 4: to me because these numbers had started streaming and by
- 58:11Speaker 4: the way, those numbers, this is what I mean like
- 58:14Speaker 4: when we started like getting approached in airports, it was
- 58:17Speaker 4: they started releasing for a brief period of time like
- 58:20Speaker 4: streaming numbers, and we were like the stepchild's of NBC.
- 58:25Speaker 4: And they released the numbers and it was like, not
- 58:28Speaker 4: only were we at the top and Friends was number two,
- 58:34Speaker 4: but we were double what Friends were doing. It was
- 58:38Speaker 4: this sort of insane thing, and so I put together
- 58:43Speaker 4: I interviewed everyone from the show, writers, crew, actors. We
- 58:51Speaker 4: did about one hundred and fifty hours of interviews to
- 58:54Speaker 4: answer the question of why why did this happen? Like
- 58:58Speaker 4: why has this now sort of come back? So I
- 59:01Speaker 4: started with that I loved it, then started talking to
- 59:04Speaker 4: other people. Love to have you guys on at some
- 59:06Speaker 4: point it's off the beat, which now you can you
- 59:11Speaker 4: can get wherever you get your podcasts, and yeah, it's
- 59:15Speaker 4: it's it's really fun for me. I love doing it.
- 59:18Speaker 4: It's uh and I love listening to you guys as well.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Well.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Thank you man, and thank you for coming on and sorry,
- 59:25Speaker 1: we relate, but I just wanted we find you Donald,
- 59:28Speaker 1: and I just find you so funny and uh and
- 59:30Speaker 1: I think I think I have all those people watch
- 59:33Speaker 1: any more questions I know to give the well, we'll
- 59:36Speaker 1: have him back.
- 59:37Speaker 2: And all and all of that stuff, but we'll have him.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Back on Donald because I hope you'll come back. Brian,
- 59:43Speaker 1: we're such fans of yours.
- 59:45Speaker 4: Well, thank you so much. And I can't. I can't
- 59:48Speaker 4: leave you without noting that that that that you guys.
- 59:54Speaker 4: I don't know if you're aware of this. You do
- 59:56Speaker 4: some T mobile commercials?
- 59:58Speaker 2: Yes we do, Yeah, we do.
- 59:59Speaker 4: Yeah? Uh? Are are you aware that that weird team?
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: Are you? Are you?
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Are you aware that? Yes? I said, it's okay footsteps again.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Dan will beat the company that he said.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Okay, We're definitely going to beat the company that you mentioned.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: That that gets no shine on.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: I don't know why you had to end on a
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: sour note that there.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: You want to go, you want to go to walk?
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Have you seen Showgun? Have you seen Showgun? That's what
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: this is going to be like, this is what it
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: turn into.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I know we're following in your footsteps again. We're
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: just we're just we're just picking up the pieces and
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: trying to follow it.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: You're proud to be competitors with that company that shall
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: not be named.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, thank you so much, Bud.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: Thanks guys.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: That I love that guy. Huh.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: He's so funny. It's funny. It's by the way, I
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: gotta say, as a fan, it's weird seeing him make
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: full sentences.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: That's what I was gonna say. Man, like this, dude's
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: a fucking good actor. Man, you got to get into this.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: We gotta really get when we have him on again,
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: I really want to talk about what he does, you know,
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: what else he's doing in his career and stuff like
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: that as an actor, and if he's gone back to
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: theater at all. Like we we just ran out of
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: so much time, and and he stayed, and he stayed
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: the amount of time that we need.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I know, I appreciate him saying so many questions. My fault,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: you know, I was trying to I fucked up the timing.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I was trying to. I went to hot yoga. Donald,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: good for you.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I'm trying us to lose the weight that I gained
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: while in Europe. Zach, I'm going to say something to you,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: and I don't want to sound like an asshole. Okay,
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: go ahead, I want I can't wait to hear what
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: this is. What did you gain five pounds? Like six?
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but I didn't want those six pounds. Don't don't
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: don't say something like petty.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: I'm going to keep it to myself because I have
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: something very petty about a six pound weight. Trop Well,
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: let me just say, can't nobody see no six pounds
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: off of your eye? I could see it, and I
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: don't one can see it. You vain motherfucker. You look good, bro.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: You are a handsome go on, well, go on, well
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: liked player of the male human species.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Well, i'm single, Donald. When i'm when I have a
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: wife and children, I can let my body go.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: But there are plenty of women that would love to
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: be with you, my friend. Well, you just have to
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: be open to receive the love. I'm ready.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I'm ready to be so picky. I just I am
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: ready to receive. I just also don't want to have personally,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I have love handles. I'm working on getting rid of them.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I too worked out today. Oh there you go. I
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: put on a sweatsuit and went up to the top
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: of my hail good and started punching with my train
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: that we were good, kicking and swinging and yeah, I know,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: doing our thing.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: They're doing their day hot yoga. It really feels good.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: You come out of there high on high on life.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: It's really hard while you're in there and you want
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: to die, and then you come out and you're.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: Like, oh, how's your posing?
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: It's really bad. I haven't been in a long time
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: because I have this horrible tennis elbow. But I put
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: this strap on and I you know what I mean,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I put this uh tennis.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: I wore my strap on.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: No one seemed to mind that I was wearing a
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: strap on it high yoga. No, I have a tennis
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: elbow strap on, and I thought, let me see if
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: my tennis lebow can survive this. So I took my time.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: But it feels great. It feels really good. And I've
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: already lost a bunch of weight from not eating like
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: an asshole and drinking like an asshole.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: You know what it is, It really is the combination
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: of the like I find myself noticing I've noticed now
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: how much sugar I eat daily.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's just the waste of your of your efforts.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: But it's it's in everything though, And that's the thing,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I mean, of course it's in everything,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: but you cannot have sugary things on purpose.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, wine is you said it yourself. Where
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: alcohol is the worst.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I mean, the easiest way to drop weight is just
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: take alcohol out of the equation. But I was drinking
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: like a fish in Europe. It's hard to not It's
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: hard to be in Paris and not drink wine. That's advanced.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: Don't drink wine in Europe, challenge level impossible.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: That's double black diamond. I couldn't do that.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Ship That's like, that's like.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Here are the cities I know not how to be
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: healthy and Paris, Stockholm, New York in can be healthy.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: New York City should be easy.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: No, dude, Josh raid and I came back and he's like,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna go and try and like dry out a
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: little bit in New York. I'm like, you're going to
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: dry out in New York, Good fucking luck. I'm going
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: to La where you can dry out.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: You can be healthy and silly dry out. Yeah, they
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: give you vitamin B shots at the health stores out here.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: No, I mean la is uh, well, who is like,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: you know, the center of where I live, and you
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: know it's it's health culture and it's about it's much
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: easier to be healthy out here to me. By the way,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: I was driving home and I had to comment, I
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: wanted to tell you this on the podcast for those
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: of you who don't live in a city that's doing this.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: There's so many robots in West Hollywood. It's crazy. It's
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: just kind of creeped up. But you got all the
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: delivery robots on the sidewalks, and then you got the
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: weaimo of driverless cars on the street. And I was
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: tripping out driving home, being like, this is just kind
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: of happened little by little, but we live amongst all
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: these robots.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: Now, So what did they say? Thirty two is the
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: year that California is going to be all electric, Right,
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: that's the year that they want to clean up the
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: West coast, Right, California is going to Was that a man?
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I think it was that a mandate of when they'll
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: stop being allowed to get gas cars here. I'm sure
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: keep cars you have, but maybe you can't buy I
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: I don't know any of the loopholes. But by thirty
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: two they want that though he's good like that.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: They won't sell anymore cars. They're not going to take
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: your car away from you, but they don't take your anymore.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: They won't sell, but you can also you'll just go
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: to Arizona and buy it if that's your steez.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: I mean, people always find a way.
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: They'll import cars, right.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: There's I'm sure there's a loophole. But thirty two it's
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: supposed to be electric and an electric city. Hell yeah,
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: the fucking robots are come in. Bro, they need they
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: can't gas don't help them, but it does help. What
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: does help is that electricity. Man, this whole thing is
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: going to be powered. Our whole would be all right. Look,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: and I'm going to jump off on a tangent.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: No, don't costruct too long.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: It's not a real it's not a crazy one. Infrastructure
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: is very important and true and true, amen, And we
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: need to really focus on that in California actually, especially
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: because it shakes so much here on yesterday, two days ago.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: I forget the robots, I get the clean air, I
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: get all of that stuff. But if these roads aren't
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: shaped properly, and these buildings aren't reinforced. We're gonna have
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: a real big problem because you know, ship's kind of
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: shit happens anyway, last thing I want to say, that
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: was beautiful, beautiful. I'm gonna I love that. I just
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: want you to remember. I'm gonna get that too.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna get that whole paragraph tattooed on my chest
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: because nostructure is important.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: Important.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Listen, did you watch Jim Crazy yet?
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: I watched some of it?
