Speaker 2: Secretaries to take Chris Warner. Good morning, Sarah, welcome to
• 2:49
  Speaker 2: the show.
• 2:50
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave. I thought you had lost said for
• 2:52
Speaker 6: a minute talking about the sunny weather outside you know, you.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: Know, it's something I started because of this winter. I
• 2:59
Speaker 2: kept saying, and it was like five degrees and it
• 3:01
Speaker 2: was icy. I said, it's Sonny in seventy five. And
• 3:04
Speaker 2: now I've had people doing hashtags Sonny in seventy five. Eventually, Secretary,
• 3:08
Speaker 2: we will get there. It will be Sonny in seventy eight.
• 3:10
Speaker 2: By this weekend, we're going to be eighty. They tell,
• 3:12
Speaker 2: let's maybe breaking records Friday and Saturday. But I don't
• 3:14
Speaker 2: know about the sunshinel.
• 3:16
Speaker 6: I'm on my way to Morgantown and it's cloudy, overcast
• 3:19
Speaker 6: and anything but Sonny and seventy five. But I'm with you, man,
• 3:22
  Speaker 6: we'll start.
• 3:23
Speaker 2: But the temperature, the temperatures are okay. I mean, it
• 3:28
Speaker 2: could be a lot worse. I want to, Secretary, I
• 3:30
Speaker 2: want to talk about an event that you have going
• 3:32
Speaker 2: on tomorrow in the House Chambers. You said you're on
• 3:34
Speaker 2: your way to Morgantown. Now we'll talk about that in
• 3:36
Speaker 2: a little bit, But you got something going on to
• 3:38
Speaker 2: Martha Capitol. It's the John Lewis National Youth Leadership Award,
• 3:42
Speaker 2: and two young West Virginians are getting that award.
• 3:45
Speaker 4: Talk about it, you know, I.
• 3:47
Speaker 6: Mean, it's really neat. We've got two young people, Braydon
• 3:51
Speaker 6: Williamson who's a country recording artist, Nashville recording artist, and
• 3:57
Speaker 6: Delegate Josh Holstein. Testingly enough, they're only thirty one recipients
• 4:03
Speaker 6: of this award, and two of them are from right
• 4:06
Speaker 6: here in West Virginia, down in your neck of the country,
• 4:10
Speaker 6: LA there the Logan area. And then Josh Holstein of
• 4:14
Speaker 6: course is from Boone County, so both from coal mine
• 4:18
Speaker 6: and families, both hardworking and getting recognized, you know, before
• 4:25
Speaker 6: the age of twenty five. That's one of the requirements
• 4:27
Speaker 6: either have to be twenty five or or younger for
• 4:30
Speaker 6: this award. Josh Holstein's twenty four years of age and
• 4:35
Speaker 6: Braden is twenty three years age. So we're the John
• 4:40
Speaker 6: Lewis Youth Award. Leader. Youth Leadership Award is named after
• 4:46
Speaker 6: Congressman John Lewis from the fifth District and Georgia. He
• 4:51
Speaker 6: was one of the original freedom writers, you know, when
• 4:55
Speaker 6: it came to integration back in nineteen sixty one. He
• 5:00
Speaker 6: is obviously deceased, and you know, this award now carries
• 5:05
Speaker 6: on remembers, you know, his efforts and those that received
• 5:10
Speaker 6: the award, like Josh and Braden.
• 5:15
Speaker 2: And for Josh Holstein, of course, he was a very
• 5:18
Speaker 2: young when he was elected to the West Virginia House
• 5:20
Speaker 2: of Delegates. Also he is the state Republican party chair.
• 5:23
Speaker 2: And I've interviewed and I've known Josh Holstein for a
• 5:25
Speaker 2: number of years. I've had him on both my shows.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: He's got to be I would think one of the
• 5:29
Speaker 2: youngest Republican or one of the youngest party leaders Democrat
• 5:33
Speaker 2: or Republican in the entire nation.
• 5:35
Speaker 4: I would think at that age he is.
• 5:38
Speaker 6: The youngest state chairman in the nation of a major
• 5:41
Speaker 6: political party. And was elected to the West Virginia Legislature
• 5:46
Speaker 6: at the age of nineteen. So and you know now
• 5:50
Speaker 6: serves on just some really important committees Judiciary, No, he
• 5:56
Speaker 6: serves on Energy and Public Works and then Technology and Infrastructure.
• 6:01
Speaker 6: So he is he's got quite a full plate in
• 6:06
Speaker 6: front of him at such a young age. But we're
• 6:09
Speaker 6: really impressed with what he's been able to do. UH
• 6:11
Speaker 6: and being recognized at a national level.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: Likeness and Braiden Williamson, And because you mentioned la everything's
• 6:19
Speaker 2: got a Logan connection. Braiden Williamson is from Logan. UH
• 6:22
Speaker 2: fun Facts Secretary. I graduated high school with his mother, Teresa. Yeah, Teresa,
• 6:28
  Speaker 2: So there's that.
• 6:31
Speaker 6: Went down and had the opportunity to meet her and
• 6:36
Speaker 6: be there at the Coalfield Jamboree Theater when I've got
• 6:40
Speaker 6: a chance to hear Braiden. Since then, we've had a
• 6:44
Speaker 6: couple of events and Braiden's been able to play those.
• 6:48
Speaker 6: But they're just great people. And the Braiden's dad, it's
• 6:51
Speaker 6: coal miner Raymond h And yeah, they're just great people
• 6:56
Speaker 6: and really impressed with you know what Braiden's been able
• 6:59
Speaker 6: to do, you know, serving on the board of governors
• 7:04
Speaker 6: at Southern West Virginia Community and Technic. You know, he's
• 7:08
Speaker 6: a business administration major. He also has a very full
• 7:13
Speaker 6: plate with all of his leadership positions and at the
• 7:16
Speaker 6: same time making a name for himself on the national
• 7:19
Speaker 6: stage with his guitar and singing abilities.
• 7:22
  Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's he's a great young man. So you
• 7:26
Speaker 2: said you're heading to Morgantown. What's going on in Morgantown today.
• 7:29
Speaker 6: We've got a voter registration drive, you know. And by
• 7:33
Speaker 6: the way, speaking of voter registration drives, that's how Josh Holstein,
• 7:37
Speaker 6: you know, one of the very first things he did
• 7:39
Speaker 6: as far as being typically engaged was registering voters to
• 7:45
Speaker 6: you know, at an early age. So we're we're doing
• 7:47
Speaker 6: that today. We've this will be our thirty fifth high
• 7:50
Speaker 6: school that I've been in in the last year. This
• 7:53
Speaker 6: will make the fifty fifth high school that the staff
• 7:57
Speaker 6: has been in in the last year. We registered just
• 8:02
Speaker 6: over seventeen thousand, seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen year olds in
• 8:07
Speaker 6: the last year, and that represents more than forty two
• 8:11
Speaker 6: percent of all newly registered voters in West Virginia last year.
• 8:15
Speaker 6: So we're proud of the effort our office takes on
• 8:19
Speaker 6: to make sure that we get those students registered and
• 8:23
Speaker 6: the school also has an opportunity to earn the Jennings
• 8:27
Speaker 6: Randolph Award. I say, register more than seventy five percent
• 8:31
  Speaker 6: of the class.
• 8:32
Speaker 2: Talking with West Virginia Secretary of Saint Chris Warner Secretary
• 8:35
Speaker 2: before I know you go on a tight schedule before
• 8:37
Speaker 2: we let you go. News was made a couple of
• 8:38
Speaker 2: weeks ago that the Trump administration asks states to turn
• 8:41
Speaker 2: over data as it relates to voter registration. Your office
• 8:45
Speaker 2: and some other states have said quite frankly that that
• 8:49
Speaker 2: violates your state law. Now comes news that your office
• 8:53
Speaker 2: and others will be sued by the Trump administration. I
• 8:56
Speaker 2: know you are limited in what you can say, but
• 8:58
Speaker 2: are there any updates at this.
• 9:02
Speaker 6: I don't believe there's any updates. We still haven't been served, Dave.
• 9:06
Speaker 6: I mean, I know we've read it in the news,
• 9:09
Speaker 6: but we haven't been served. You know, it's of you know,
• 9:13
Speaker 6: fifteen minutes ago on a SO office, So we're you know,
• 9:18
Speaker 6: it is now I guess threatened litigation or pending litigation,
• 9:22
Speaker 6: and we will reserve comment now and wait for you know,
• 9:28
Speaker 6: our attorneys to lay out our case. We're very confident
• 9:33
Speaker 6: in the position that we have. I'd love to talk
• 9:35
Speaker 6: more about it, but just can't do that at this point.
• 9:37
  Speaker 4: I understand.
• 9:38
Speaker 2: Be safe out there. West Virginia Secretary Saint Chris Warner.
• 9:41
Speaker 2: I appreciate you being here.
• 9:42
Speaker 6: Thanks a lot, Dave, thank you for having me on
• 9:44
  Speaker 6: this morning.
• 9:45
Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's nine to seventeen. If you have a child
• 9:47

• 10:30
Speaker 4: Let me just say this.
• 10:31
Speaker 2: In the follow up to the interview with the Secretary Warner,
• 10:35
Speaker 2: I saw a lot of chatter you know, online and
• 10:38
Speaker 2: kind of catch everybody up. The Trump administration has asked
• 10:41
Speaker 2: several states. Actually, I think they've put on mass to
• 10:43
Speaker 2: all the states. I think West Virginia being one that
• 10:46
Speaker 2: they want voter information turned over to the government. Secretary Warner,
• 10:53
Speaker 2: who is a Republican strong Trump supporter, was involved in
• 10:57
Speaker 2: the Trump campaign years ago. First campaign, I think it
• 11:00
Speaker 2: was a former Republican party chair said no, it's a
• 11:04
Speaker 2: violation of West Virginia state law.
• 11:06
Speaker 4: And when you when you read the.
• 11:09
Speaker 2: Comments online from people said, well, what does he got
• 11:11
Speaker 2: to hide or why I don't have anything to hide? Well,
• 11:14
Speaker 2: what the thing is, it's a violation of West Virginia
• 11:17
Speaker 2: state code. And I applaud editorial comment. I applaud Secretary Warner,
• 11:24
Speaker 2: and I applaud any of the other secretary of the state,
• 11:26
Speaker 2: Republican or Democrat around the country that are just saying no,
• 11:29
Speaker 2: this is not any business of the federal government. And
• 11:32
Speaker 2: it takes a lot of fortitude.
• 11:35
Speaker 4: I leave it at that.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: I was going to say something else when I got
• 11:38
Speaker 2: in trouble for making one of those statements on the
• 11:41
Speaker 2: air one time. It takes a lot of you know
• 11:44
Speaker 2: what to say no and to follow the law. And
• 11:47
Speaker 2: for that I appreciate. Secretary said Chris Warner. All right,
• 11:50
Speaker 2: we're going to take a break. When we come back
• 11:52
Speaker 2: a little bit later on a night, your Mayor Dave
• 11:54

• 14:08
Speaker 4: Good morning, Sarah, Welcome to the show, Dave. Good morning,
• 14:10
Speaker 4: thanks for having me again being here.
• 14:12
Speaker 2: The dates are set June the sixteenth, the twenty first,
• 14:15
Speaker 2: and the bikes are coming back.
• 14:16
Speaker 4: Yep. USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships returned to Charleston.
• 14:20
Speaker 4: As you said, June sixteenth to the twenty first, we're excited.
• 14:24
Speaker 4: It also gives us an opportunity to incorporate some celebration
• 14:29
Speaker 4: and festivities for both West Virginia Day and Juneteenth this year,
• 14:34
Speaker 4: So a lot more community engagement as a part of
• 14:37
Speaker 4: the event this year. But you know, this event has
• 14:39
Speaker 4: become such a huge hit in Charleston. People have really
• 14:43
Speaker 4: embraced this event and we're really excited to be working
• 14:45
Speaker 4: on it and bringing it back here in twenty twenty six.
• 14:48
Speaker 2: Let's take people back the last couple of years about
• 14:52
Speaker 2: the whole way. I mean, it's an interesting story the
• 14:54
Speaker 2: way that Charleston came to acquire this event, and you
• 14:57
Speaker 2: were part of it as along with the Mayor's administration.
• 15:00
Speaker 2: Others talk about how how we got here.
• 15:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I will say, just off the top, this
• 15:04
Speaker 4: doesn't happen without the support of Mayor Goodwin and her
• 15:07
Speaker 4: staff because this, uh is it's a big event for
• 15:11
Speaker 4: our city, but it's also a heavy lift for our
• 15:14
Speaker 4: city and its city departments. But you know, the reader's
• 15:17
Speaker 4: Digest version Dave is that several years ago, coming out
• 15:21
Speaker 4: of COVID, USA table Tennis was looking for a destination
• 15:25
Speaker 4: to host their Junior Pan Am Games, and we brought
• 15:28
Speaker 4: them in on a on a you know, just they knew,
• 15:33
Speaker 4: they didn't know us, and they came in and they
• 15:36
Speaker 4: had a great experience at the Coliseum. Through that, we
• 15:39
Speaker 4: were able to develop a relationship with USA Volleyball. We
• 15:42
Speaker 4: brought a men's Continental Championship Olympic teams from eight countries
• 15:46
Speaker 4: competing here in Charleston for an event. And it was
• 15:49
Speaker 4: that relationship with USA Volleyball that led us to USA Cycling,
• 15:53
Speaker 4: who was looking for a destination for this event. You know,
• 15:56
Speaker 4: the tourism industry and as a whole, and especially this
• 16:00
Speaker 4: sports industry with the USA governing bodies, they're mostly housed
• 16:05
Speaker 4: in Colorado Springs. They all know each other, so they talk.
• 16:08
Speaker 4: So when they come to a destination and they have
• 16:10
Speaker 4: a great experience, they tell each other, hey, listen, we
• 16:13
Speaker 4: had a great experience in Charleston. You should give them
• 16:15
Speaker 4: a shot. So all of that has sort of led
• 16:18
Speaker 4: to and then this year now we're bringing in USA
• 16:20
Speaker 4: Gymnastics a few days after the cycling race ends. So
• 16:24
Speaker 4: you know, all of these relationships matter, they build, they
• 16:26
Speaker 4: have great experiences in Charleston, and it leads to bigger
• 16:29
Speaker 4: and better things. And beyond just that, we're we're in
• 16:32
Speaker 4: talks now with USA Cycling for additional and more events
• 16:36
Speaker 4: in the future because they really love it.
• 16:37
Speaker 2: Here talk about the need tim for volunteers because this
• 16:41
Speaker 2: doesn't happen without a lot of volunteers.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: Yeah, I said, it doesn't happen without the full support
• 16:45
Speaker 4: of the Mayor's office in the City of Charleston, and
• 16:47
Speaker 4: that's absolutely true. But it also doesn't happen without the
• 16:51
Speaker 4: engagement of a whole lot of volunteers in our community.
• 16:55
Speaker 4: You know, we estimate somewhere between three hundred and three
• 16:57
Speaker 4: hundred and fifty volunteers or what we'll need. You can
• 17:00
Speaker 4: sign up as a volunteer if you go to Charleston,
• 17:02
Speaker 4: WV dot com and navigate to our Bike City page
• 17:05
Speaker 4: from our home page. But you know, the volunteers, it's
• 17:09
Speaker 4: not a hard job, but it's an important job. The
• 17:11
Speaker 4: volunteers are there to serve as course mark they serve
• 17:17
Speaker 4: as course marshals. That's the first time your producer's ever
• 17:22
Speaker 4: been in my ear really threw me off. I thought
• 17:24
Speaker 4: I was having a stroke. It throws me off. Yeah.
• 17:27
Speaker 4: They service as course marshals, right, So they are posted
• 17:30
Speaker 4: at intersections and crosswalks to make sure that spectators are
• 17:34
Speaker 4: not going out on the course during the race, and
• 17:36
Speaker 4: that keeps both the spectator and the competitor safe in
• 17:40
  Speaker 4: that regard. So it's like I said, it's not a
• 17:42
Speaker 4: hard job, but it's a really important job. And again
• 17:45
Speaker 4: you can sign up by going to Charleston wv.
• 17:47
Speaker 2: Tis What are some of the jobs? I mean, I
• 17:48
Speaker 2: mean you talked about it just a little bit there,
• 17:50
Speaker 2: but break it down. If if somebody says I want
• 17:52
Speaker 2: to be involved in this, where might you put me?
• 17:55
Speaker 2: So you know what you would put me as as
• 17:57
Speaker 2: a traffic barrier. You know, if a car breaks through,
• 17:59
Speaker 2: you stand in front of it. But I mean what
• 18:00
  Speaker 2: would Yeah.
• 18:01
Speaker 4: So you're you're gonna be posted around the course at
• 18:04
Speaker 4: different intersections and crosswalks. You're gonna have a whistle, and
• 18:07
Speaker 4: your job is to as you see the race approaching,
• 18:10
Speaker 4: you blow the whistle to let people know, hey, the
• 18:12
Speaker 4: riders are coming through, don't go out onto the course.
• 18:15
  Speaker 4: I mean it's really that simple. U. There's another subset
• 18:18
Speaker 4: of volunteers that have to do with anti doping, and
• 18:21
Speaker 4: they have to post race follow some of the athletes
• 18:24
Speaker 4: around so that they can take their post race required
• 18:27
Speaker 4: drug test. But by and large, most of the most
• 18:31
Speaker 4: of the volunteers are literally standing on the course and
• 18:34
Speaker 4: blowing a whistle when the race is coming through to
• 18:36
Speaker 4: alert people that it's not safe to cross the street
• 18:39
Speaker 4: at that moment. It's honestly, David's that simple. Even you
• 18:42
Speaker 4: could do it, Even a Dave could do it. That's
• 18:45
Speaker 4: one of the fifteen days that we have here in
• 18:47
Speaker 4: the company Togain. We're talking with Tim Brady from the
• 18:49
Speaker 4: Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dave aland Show and five
• 18:52
Speaker 4: Dyeline brought to you in part by your hometown baseball team,
• 18:54
Speaker 4: the Charleston Dirty Birds season will be here before you
• 18:56
Speaker 4: know it gets your season tickets, merchandise and more Dirty
• 18:59
Speaker 4: Birds Baseball. Talk about Tim, what this event has meant
• 19:02
Speaker 4: to the region. You know, it's it's meant a lot
• 19:05
Speaker 4: both in just the general economic impact of the event
• 19:08
Speaker 4: each year, but beyond that, I think what we're seeing
• 19:11
Speaker 4: and what we sort of latched onto very early in
• 19:15
Speaker 4: the year one is that This is an opportunity to
• 19:18
Speaker 4: grow cycling overall in not only Kanaw County, but in
• 19:21
Speaker 4: the region, getting more kids on bikes, getting more folks
• 19:26
Speaker 4: out and riding, establishing more trails, more places for people
• 19:30
Speaker 4: to ride. You know, I heard you say that Dave
• 19:33
Speaker 4: case Bolt was going to be on later in the show.
• 19:35
Speaker 4: You know what night. What Nitro has done out at
• 19:37
Speaker 4: Riding Our Lake just some really great biking and hiking
• 19:41
Speaker 4: trails at Riding Our Lake. And what we want to
• 19:44
Speaker 4: do now is we want to look at all of
• 19:46
Speaker 4: these you know, you've got Meek's Mountain out in Putnam County,
• 19:48
Speaker 4: You've got Riding Our Lake, You've got you know, Kanawa
• 19:52
Speaker 4: State Forest, You've got all kinds of great gravel riding
• 19:54
Speaker 4: up at the Elk River Trail State Park and in
• 19:58
Speaker 4: that area. We want to connect all of the we
• 20:00
Speaker 4: were working now. It's a two year process to create
• 20:05
Speaker 4: a really networked series of trails and map them all
• 20:09
Speaker 4: and brand Charleston is a cycling destination for people to
• 20:12
Speaker 4: come stay in the city, enjoy our food and enjoy
• 20:14
Speaker 4: our breweries, enjoy our night life. But in the day
• 20:17
Speaker 4: they're out and they're riding all these different places with
• 20:19
Speaker 4: Charleston as the hub. So we're mapping trails in a
• 20:21
Speaker 4: four county region. So all of this USA Cycling and
• 20:25
Speaker 4: the enthusiasm for the race and for cycling in general
• 20:28
Speaker 4: is leading us to building a bigger outdoor recreation brand
• 20:31
Speaker 4: centered around cycling that lasts long beyond the five year
• 20:35
Speaker 4: contract of the race. It's also led us to the
• 20:39
Speaker 4: thought and we're working with USA Cycling to spend the
• 20:41
Speaker 4: Night Races, the Criterion Races off into an annual series
• 20:45
Speaker 4: that's hosted here in Charleston every year. So every year
• 20:47
Speaker 4: beyond just Pro Roads, you'll have an annual championship event
• 20:51
Speaker 4: held in Charleston that we own. There's a purse. We
• 20:54
Speaker 4: attract writers from all over the country to come and race,
• 20:57
Speaker 4: and again that's something that's a legacy event that outlasts
• 20:59
Speaker 4: just the five year contract of Pro Road Nationals.
• 21:02
Speaker 2: Again, we're talking with Tim Brady uh and of course
• 21:06
Speaker 2: these people that come to watch this, these people all
• 21:08
Speaker 2: the teams, I mean may be one cyclist, but who
• 21:11
Speaker 2: knows how many people he or she has has with them.
• 21:13
Speaker 2: You know, when they come in, those people go to restaurants.
• 21:16
Speaker 2: That's why people stay in hotels, They go to shops.
• 21:18
Speaker 2: Talk about the economic impact all sure.
• 21:20
Speaker 4: I mean, we're we're looking at somewhere in the neighborhood
• 21:24
Speaker 4: of a five to eight million dollar economic impact over
• 21:26
Speaker 4: the just the course of the event. These are folks
• 21:30
Speaker 4: that are coming in. As you said, they're not just
• 21:32
  Speaker 4: staying here, but they're they're shopping, they're eating, they're out,
• 21:35
Speaker 4: they're doing things in the in the community, and it's
• 21:40
Speaker 4: really rewarding. Like Criteria nights are my favorites. I mean,
• 21:44
Speaker 4: it's that's the party night, right, We've got music and
• 21:47
Speaker 4: activity and slack plaza, brewers, row is hopping. But even
• 21:51
Speaker 4: like Steven Jenny from V one hundred were posted up
• 21:55
Speaker 4: at the corner of Courier and Hale Street last year
• 21:58
Speaker 4: on a corner for the criterions and drew a big
• 22:02
Speaker 4: crowd there, big crowds that to start finish line some
• 22:04
Speaker 4: other spots. To just walk the course and see these
• 22:07
Speaker 4: crowds of people out cheering these athletes on and being
• 22:10
Speaker 4: engaged with this race. It's so rewarding and so exciting
• 22:13
Speaker 4: for me to see because it tells us that we
• 22:16
Speaker 4: did something right when we brought this race in. You know, anecdotally,
• 22:20
Speaker 4: I can go on and on about the nights of
• 22:23
Speaker 4: the criteria and records that were set at places like
• 22:26
Speaker 4: Black Sheep and Fife Street and other restaurants downtown, setting
• 22:32
Speaker 4: single day records, single night records. That's what it's all about. Yeah,
• 22:36
Speaker 4: it's about the competition, and it's about getting eyeballs on it,
• 22:39
Speaker 4: and you know all the different media that we have
• 22:41
Speaker 4: from around the world that come in to watch the race.
• 22:43
Speaker 4: But it's also about these local businesses that benefit from
• 22:46
Speaker 4: us bringing these events in.
• 22:47
Speaker 2: And you know, for those of the for those that
• 22:50
Speaker 2: navigate the streets in downtown Charleston, deary and this. You know,
• 22:52
Speaker 2: and you can't put on an event like this. I
• 22:54
Speaker 2: think there's not going to be a certain amount of
• 22:56
Speaker 2: inconvenience for a few days. But I think you guys
• 22:59
Speaker 2: do a great job of giving people plenty of notice,
• 23:03
Speaker 2: Hey we're coming this way. It's all over all of
• 23:05
Speaker 2: our stations, it's all over all over other forms of
• 23:08
Speaker 2: media as well, so you know, just plan I mean,
• 23:13
Speaker 2: it's true, it's June, yeah, you know, June sixteenth to
• 23:16
Speaker 2: the twenty first, And I've said repeatedly, and you know,
• 23:18
Speaker 2: we saw it come to fruition in year one and
• 23:20
Speaker 2: last year it was even levels above.
• 23:24
Speaker 4: But nobody's trapped in their house at any point. You
• 23:29
Speaker 4: can go anywhere you want to go in the city
• 23:31
Speaker 4: of Charleston if you give yourself an extra fifteen to
• 23:33
Speaker 4: twenty minutes. That's my standard line, and I will hold
• 23:35
Speaker 4: that line until somebody proves me wrong because that is
• 23:39
Speaker 4: literally the only inconvenience that you might have if you're
• 23:43
Speaker 4: trying to get somewhere. Just give yourself building a little
• 23:45
Speaker 4: extra time because in partnership with the Charleston Police Department,
• 23:49
Speaker 4: another huge partner in this, that we could not do
• 23:51
Speaker 4: this without Oldham and Haslet and all those guys do
• 23:56
Speaker 4: such a great job. Nothing shut down. The roads might
• 24:01
Speaker 4: be closed, but you can get where you need to
• 24:03
Speaker 4: go if you just give yourself a little extra time.
• 24:05
Speaker 2: And again, the economic impact of this thing is just
• 24:08
Speaker 2: it all goes back to that for me. Yeah, that'suly
• 24:10
Speaker 2: I'm that kind of guy. Yeah, you know, it all
• 24:12
Speaker 2: goes back to that me and what it means.
• 24:13
Speaker 4: To the area plus people.
• 24:16
Speaker 2: And you're in the tourism business CVB, you know you
• 24:18
Speaker 2: know this people that go somewhere, And just think about
• 24:21
Speaker 2: this for our listeners, think about this, if you've had
• 24:23
Speaker 2: a good experience. If you're going to the beach, or
• 24:25
Speaker 2: you're going to the mountains or wherever you may be
• 24:27
Speaker 2: going going skiing, you go somewhere and you have a
• 24:30
Speaker 2: good time and you're treated well. And when people come
• 24:32
Speaker 2: to Charleston and West Virginia general, they're treated well.
• 24:35
Speaker 4: You're gonna go back.
• 24:36
Speaker 2: And it goes back to what you talked about about
• 24:38
  Speaker 2: the ultimate networking.
• 24:39
Speaker 4: Is still workmouth. It's still word of mouth.
• 24:41
Speaker 2: No matter what's out there, it's still they're gonna go
• 24:43
Speaker 2: back and they tell people. And so when they have
• 24:45
Speaker 2: these good experiences, they go back and they tell people.
• 24:47
Speaker 2: And the way that these people were treated, you're gonna
• 24:50
Speaker 2: get more and more of this stuff.
• 24:51
Speaker 4: The folks that are here are going to come back.
• 24:53
Speaker 4: We have an eighty five percent return rate on visitation,
• 24:56
Speaker 4: and they're going to tell other people and they're gonna
• 24:57
Speaker 4: bring more people and encourage more people to go. So, yeah,
• 25:00
Speaker 4: it's all about the experience. And one other thing I
• 25:03
Speaker 4: would like to squeeze in here. We talk about economic impact,
• 25:07
Speaker 4: and that is critically important and it's why we do
• 25:09
Speaker 4: what we do. But we also talked at the CVB
• 25:12
Speaker 4: about community impact. Multiple nonprofits benefited from this event last year.
• 25:16
Speaker 4: The CEMC Foundation benefited through a charitable ride that was
• 25:21
Speaker 4: a part of this Mountaineer Food Bank benefited from this
• 25:24
Speaker 4: event last year. Big Brothers, Big Sisters benefited from this
• 25:28
Speaker 4: event last year through a charitable event that they organized.
• 25:32
Speaker 4: And this year we're going to bring all of those
• 25:34
Speaker 4: organizations back and also add KCHA to the roster. So
• 25:39
Speaker 4: these local nonprofits that do incredibly important work within our community,
• 25:44
Speaker 4: they have a platform to fundraise and raise awareness for
• 25:47
Speaker 4: their causes during this event too. And for me, yeah,
• 25:50
Speaker 4: economic impact is what it's all about at the end
• 25:53
Speaker 4: of the day. But if we can also make our
• 25:56
Speaker 4: community a better place, that to me is incredibly import.
• 26:00
Speaker 2: And the timing of this thing, you said around West
• 26:03
Speaker 2: Virginia Day, around Juneteenth, which is a federal holiday, around
• 26:07
Speaker 2: all these things, I mean, it seems like a no
• 26:09
Speaker 2: brainer that there's gonna be some some West Virginia Day
• 26:12
Speaker 2: stuff involved in some Juneteenth stuff involved in this.
• 26:14
  Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I mean, I don't I don't want
• 26:16
Speaker 4: to say too much too soon. You know, we've had
• 26:18
  Speaker 4: a we've had a we've had great conversation conversations with
• 26:21
Speaker 4: some of the folks from Juneteenth Committee meeting later today
• 26:24
Speaker 4: actually with Charleston Montassori School to talk about Roles on
• 26:28
Speaker 4: the River and how we can incorporate that into the
• 26:30
Speaker 4: event because that would traditionally be held on West Virginia Day.
• 26:33
Speaker 4: So yeah, I mean, and that just again community impact, right,
• 26:37
Speaker 4: like we're we're trying to help make our community a
• 26:39
Speaker 4: better place to live.
• 26:39
Speaker 2: All right, It's going to be a busy couple of
• 26:42
Speaker 2: weeks here Charleston. I mean, you can think about this event,
• 26:45
Speaker 2: this is in June, and of course that will kind
• 26:47
Speaker 2: of lead us into the regatta. You get that going on.
• 26:49
Speaker 2: You have a foam with the dome this summer. You
• 26:51
Speaker 2: got all these big things going on. But over the
• 26:53
Speaker 2: next couple of weeks, the population of Charleston is going
• 26:56
Speaker 2: to grow a lot. With the girls state basketball chair
• 26:59
Speaker 2: but which start Tuesday, the boys are after that.
• 27:02
Speaker 4: Talk about that economic impact, Yeah, I mean, just those
• 27:05
Speaker 4: two events, just those two weeks, that's a ten plus
• 27:08
Speaker 4: million dollar economic impact to the city of Charleston. But
• 27:12
Speaker 4: I'm gonna share this with you. Yes, we've got two
• 27:15
Speaker 4: weeks of high school basketball. By the way, we just
• 27:17
Speaker 4: came off of the West Virginia Youth Wrestling Association State
• 27:21
Speaker 4: Championships this past weekend in the Winter Blues Farmers Market.
• 27:24
Speaker 4: You couldn't park within three blocks of the coliseum on Saturday.
• 27:28
Speaker 2: Oh I know, trust me. I was at the Marshall
• 27:29
Speaker 2: event Saturday night. Steve Annibal and I amc the marsh
• 27:33
Speaker 2: University Quarterback Club event at Embassy Suites and parking was
• 27:38
Speaker 2: a bit limited. We were able to My wife and
• 27:40
Speaker 2: I were able to find once she saw it and
• 27:42
Speaker 2: pulled right in. But there was a lot of people
• 27:44
Speaker 2: in Charleston on Saturday evening.
• 27:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, sorry, not sorry, so exactly. Looking at March, the
• 27:50
Speaker 4: West Virginia Music Educators Association, the All State Concert, West
• 27:54
Speaker 4: Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair, Girls Basketball Championship, Boys
• 27:58
Speaker 4: Basketball Championships, Construction and Design Expo, after that, WVDNR Archery
• 28:04
Speaker 4: in the School State Tournament, Charleston Youth Art's Juried Expedition,
• 28:08
Speaker 4: and the West Virginia Coal Show and Mining Symposium all
• 28:12
Speaker 4: coming up at the Colisseum and Convention Center. We're looking
• 28:15
Speaker 4: at ninety thousand plus attendees at events at the Coliseum
• 28:20
Speaker 4: and Convention Center in the month of March. So yeah,
• 28:24
Speaker 4: we talk about cycling. The events that bring big eyeballs,
• 28:27
Speaker 4: but they're driving business at the convention Center every day.
• 28:31
Speaker 2: There's always something going on every weekend in Charleston, I mean,
• 28:34
Speaker 2: and that's what I love because even if it's not
• 28:37
Speaker 2: an event that's quote unquote open to the public or
• 28:39
Speaker 2: it just select people. I mean, not everybody's going to
• 28:41
Speaker 2: go to the Youth Wrestling Championship, not everybody's going to
• 28:43
Speaker 2: go to the construction and design actually right.
• 28:45
Speaker 4: But there's always two and three things going on every weekend,
• 28:49
Speaker 4: and all of those people are staying in hotels, all
• 28:51
Speaker 4: of those people are eating in restaurants. And Dave, there's
• 28:53
Speaker 4: your economic impact. And big shout out to Patrick Lahey
• 28:57
Speaker 4: and his team at the Coliseum and Convention Center. There
• 29:00
Speaker 4: are very very few dark days in a month at
• 29:04
Speaker 4: that event. Those guys work their tails off and they
• 29:07
Speaker 4: do a great job.
• 29:08
Speaker 2: All right, Jim Brady from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau,
• 29:12
Speaker 2: We'll be talking to you a lot.
• 29:12
Speaker 4: Over the next couple months. Appreciate you being here, man,
• 29:14
Speaker 4: Thanks a lot. Thanks, Dave, appreciate it.
• 29:15
Speaker 2: We had twenty four minutes away from Tim Todave Island
• 29:18
Speaker 2: Show on five eighty Live is broad to you aparted
• 29:19
Speaker 2: by Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. If
• 29:22
Speaker 2: you're injured, visit for Thepeople dot Com. Back after this
• 29:24
Speaker 2: on the Voice of Charleston WCCHS.
• 29:28
Speaker 1: Brought to you by the Eric Jtar Family Businesses. Eric
• 29:32
Speaker 1: Jtar Family Businesses are small businesses with big impact, including generations,
• 29:37
Speaker 1: physical therapy and snap fitness.
• 29:39
Speaker 10: My name's Chris Miller. I'm president of Dutch Miller Automotive.
• 29:42
Speaker 10: Jarrett Construction completely renovated and helped redesign Dutch Miller, Kia
• 29:46
Speaker 10: and South Charleston. The fit and the finish and the
• 29:48
Speaker 10: quality of the project is exceptional. He has an attention
• 29:51
Speaker 10: to detail and an I for that kind of stuff.
• 29:54
Speaker 10: You always want to give your best to your customer.
• 29:56
Speaker 10: It's just as important to him as as this to you.

• 32:24
Speaker 2: story posted this morning wv Metro News dot com. Yesterday,
• 32:27
Speaker 2: the City of Nitro entered into an agreement with West
• 32:29
Speaker 2: Virginia American Water to complete the sale of the Nitro
• 32:32
Speaker 2: Regional Wastewater Utility, including the sewer plant. Nitro Mayor Dave
• 32:37
Speaker 2: Caseboll joins us now to talk about it. Good morning, Mayor,
• 32:39
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
• 32:40
  Speaker 17: Good morning, Dave.
• 32:41
  Speaker 6: How you doing.
• 32:41
Speaker 4: I'm doing fine, Thank you for being here. So what's
• 32:43
Speaker 4: the story here, Mayor?
• 32:45
Speaker 17: Yeah, So, yesde we closed the deal with Western America Water.
• 32:48
Speaker 17: We've been negotiating this for past three and a half
• 32:52
Speaker 17: years for the sale of our Nitro Regional Wastewar utility
• 32:56
Speaker 17: for twenty million dollars. We had some bonds we had
• 32:59
Speaker 17: to pay off. So I think the total amount to
• 33:01
Speaker 17: Nightro is going to be about fourteen to two.
• 33:05
Speaker 2: So what does this mean? Let me back up, how
• 33:08
Speaker 2: did you arrive at this? Why is this necessary in
• 33:10
  Speaker 2: the city's opinion?
• 33:12
Speaker 17: Well, I think it's some people need to understand this
• 33:14
Speaker 17: wasn't a decision that was taken very lively. In fact,
• 33:16
Speaker 17: it was discussed for many months on all the alternatives,
• 33:20
Speaker 17: what can we do with our sanitary board. Finally we
• 33:25
Speaker 17: just come to the conclusion that we really didn't have
• 33:27
Speaker 17: any other option. We were dealing with a seventy year
• 33:30
Speaker 17: old plant. Eighty percent of our system is still combined
• 33:35
Speaker 17: storm water and sewer that needs to be replaced. We
• 33:39
Speaker 17: got rising inflation costs, rising construction costs. It was just
• 33:43
Speaker 17: impractical to ask four thousand customers to try to offset
• 33:47
Speaker 17: the pens and millions of dollars. We were estimating over
• 33:50
Speaker 17: one hundred million dollars of improvements that needed to be
• 33:53
Speaker 17: made to our system. So we vote. They voted unanimously
• 33:58
Speaker 17: to recommend the city council for the sale all the utility,
• 34:00
Speaker 17: and then city council vote on it and it passed
• 34:03
Speaker 17: City council. So the sale was completed yesterday.
• 34:07
Speaker 2: Well, and I heard a comment I think that you
• 34:09
Speaker 2: did with a news team, and you may have said
• 34:12
Speaker 2: this actually in public when you said, look, you know
• 34:14
Speaker 2: rates are I mean? And if I'm wrong you can
• 34:16
Speaker 2: correct me. And as you were, I think you said
• 34:18
Speaker 2: that you know rates. We're going to have to go
• 34:20
Speaker 2: up either way, whether we do it, we meaning Nitro,
• 34:23
Speaker 2: or whether the new company does it. You know, rates
• 34:25
Speaker 2: are going to have to go up to pay for
• 34:26
  Speaker 2: these things.
• 34:28
Speaker 17: So we were not sure that the sale was going through,
• 34:31
Speaker 17: and we had on last night's city council agenda an
• 34:34
Speaker 17: ordinance to approve a fifty rate increase that would that
• 34:39
Speaker 17: would have started March to first. And what people need
• 34:42
Speaker 17: to understand is that fifty rate increase was just going
• 34:46
Speaker 17: to get us back to even. Was just to give
• 34:49
Speaker 17: us operating capital to continue to run to utility. It
• 34:52
Speaker 17: was going to do a few small pump station improvements,
• 34:56
Speaker 17: but uh, that was just going to get us back
• 34:58
Speaker 17: to even. In fact, the city, the City of Nitro
• 35:00
Speaker 17: had the loan to utility three hundred thousand dollars about
• 35:04
Speaker 17: six months ago just to keep his head above water.
• 35:07
Speaker 17: We were working with three employees short for the past
• 35:11
Speaker 17: several years. We was doing everything we could. We went
• 35:15
Speaker 17: through a very high inflationary period between to our late
• 35:19
Speaker 17: last rating crease was twenty eighteen. We went through a
• 35:22
Speaker 17: very high inflationary period after that, and our construction costs.
• 35:27
Speaker 17: For instance, we are now putting a storm. We're putting
• 35:30
Speaker 17: a storm water line down Walker Street. The original estimate
• 35:33
Speaker 17: for that project was one point eight million. When the
• 35:37
Speaker 17: project went out for bid, it came into four million dollars.
• 35:41
Speaker 17: So estimates our construction costs were just exorbitant, and with
• 35:47
Speaker 17: a four thousand customer base, we can't do it. And
• 35:50
Speaker 17: Westream America Water simply has the resources their own construction
• 35:54
Speaker 17: crews to do the improvements that are needed. In fact,
• 35:57
Speaker 17: they have pretty much pledged to invest forty two million
• 36:01
Speaker 17: dollars into our system in the next five years, something
• 36:05
Speaker 17: we simply could not do.
• 36:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, I was going to say forty two million dollars
• 36:08
Speaker 4: that the City of Nitro didn't.
• 36:09
Speaker 17: Have absolutely, I mean we would have had We would
• 36:12
Speaker 17: have had to float bonds to that, and then our
• 36:14
Speaker 17: rates would have been very, very high. In fact, the
• 36:19
Speaker 17: fifty percent increase that we were going to do last
• 36:21
Speaker 17: night as city council was the first one for this year.
• 36:24
Speaker 17: We were going to have to do another thirty percent
• 36:26
Speaker 17: increase by the end of the year, so people's rates
• 36:29
Speaker 17: and Nitro were going up. Uh, it was just it
• 36:32
Speaker 17: was just the reality of it.
• 36:34
Speaker 2: Talking to Nitro Mayor Dave case Bault, the Dave Island
• 36:36

• 36:53
Speaker 2: Generation Generations Forward Seed Dealer for details. Okay, so I'm
• 36:56
Speaker 2: an average rate payer, average customer in Nitro.
• 36:59
Speaker 4: What does this mean for me?
• 37:01
Speaker 17: Well, an average rate payer is going to see for
• 37:05
Speaker 17: the first year, we negotiated a step in increase. So
• 37:10
Speaker 17: the first year they're going to see seventy percent of
• 37:13
Speaker 17: the full Western American water rate, which I believe is
• 37:16
Speaker 17: around eighty dollars. So an average customer will probably see
• 37:20
Speaker 17: around fifty six dollars bill. Now don't hold me to
• 37:24
Speaker 17: these none, right, yeah, yeah, So around fifty six dollars
• 37:27
Speaker 17: a year. Then the second year, there will be the
• 37:33
Speaker 17: second and third year there will be increases every six
• 37:36
Speaker 17: months until we're at full rates in three years, full
• 37:39
Speaker 17: Western American water race in three years. Sewer rates in three.
• 37:43
Speaker 2: Years, and so again this was Here's what I'm hearing
• 37:47
Speaker 2: from you is and the people in the city of
• 37:49
Speaker 2: Nitro mayor is that you just city just couldn't afford
• 37:52
Speaker 2: to keep up at this pace. At the treatment facilities
• 37:54
Speaker 2: and everything else needed so much work that it seemed
• 37:57
Speaker 2: like a no brainer. In Western and American Water's got
• 38:01
Speaker 2: the resources to do it.
• 38:02
Speaker 17: It was actually absolutely a no brainer. And I don't
• 38:05
Speaker 17: think I don't think we're going to be the first
• 38:07
Speaker 17: community to do this. I'll tell you why. I think
• 38:11
Speaker 17: everybody's starting to realize. And I think this is a problem,
• 38:14
Speaker 17: Uh that West Virginia has. Uh You're you're putting out
• 38:18
Speaker 17: these contracts for these jobs, are million dollar jobs, and
• 38:22
Speaker 17: you're getting one bid on them.
• 38:24
  Speaker 6: Uh it's it's and.
• 38:26
Speaker 17: So you got several million dollar projects and one bids
• 38:29
Speaker 17: coming in. That's that storm water project that we're doing
• 38:31
Speaker 17: down Walker Street. We received one bid. So you don't
• 38:34
Speaker 17: have competitive bidding, which drives up your costs. I've had
• 38:37
Speaker 17: engineers tell me that they can bid the same jobs
• 38:40
Speaker 17: and surrounding states and it's twenty to thirty percent lower
• 38:43
Speaker 17: because they have many people bidding on the jobs. U
• 38:48
Speaker 17: numerous contractors bidding on the jobs so they're able to
• 38:51
Speaker 17: do the jobs cheaper. And there's several reasons for it
• 38:54
Speaker 17: that we could get into, but uh, it's just it's
• 38:58
Speaker 17: just it's just expensive to do projects and to do
• 39:03
  Speaker 17: these tour projects.
• 39:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, and I would be interested in what are projects?
• 39:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, Mayor and I'd be interested.
• 39:07
Speaker 2: I don't know if you're the person to talk about
• 39:09
Speaker 2: this or not, but I would be interested in maybe
• 39:10
Speaker 2: talking to some groups and maybe contractor associations or whatever,
• 39:14
Speaker 2: some of these firms and some of these organizations and say,
• 39:17
Speaker 2: you know, why is it that we don't have more
• 39:19
Speaker 2: people that are bidding? Why do we not have more
• 39:21
Speaker 2: companies betting on these jobs? And I mean, I don't
• 39:24
Speaker 2: know if it goes back to the fact that, you know,
• 39:26
Speaker 2: West Virginia has the lowest workforce participation rate in America.
• 39:28
Speaker 2: Maybe that has something to do with it. But it
• 39:30
Speaker 2: would be interesting for somebody to come on the show,
• 39:32
Speaker 2: not necessarily a mayor, but someone to say, why are
• 39:35
Speaker 2: we not getting more companies to bid on these jobs?
• 39:38
Speaker 17: Well, I'm going to give you my opinion, okay, that
• 39:42
Speaker 17: I've recognized as mayor. Maybe other mayors would agree, Maybe
• 39:44
Speaker 17: they wouldn't agree. But the state tends to hold money
• 39:49
Speaker 17: back and then release it all at the same time,
• 39:54
Speaker 17: and what that does is that spreads jobs out all
• 39:57
Speaker 17: over the state and then you have less contractors able
• 40:02
Speaker 17: to build on jobs. One contractor is doing another job.
• 40:05
Speaker 17: One contractor is doing another job, where if the body
• 40:08
Speaker 17: was released sporadically, then you'd have more people bidding on
• 40:11
Speaker 17: the jobs. I forget how much money there last year
• 40:16
Speaker 17: year before last of state release at the same time,
• 40:18
Speaker 17: and all these storm water projects, sewer projects, the money
• 40:23
Speaker 17: was released at the same time, So it makes it
• 40:25
Speaker 17: it spreads out because we have limited contractors anyway, so
• 40:30
Speaker 17: it spreads out the amount that the contractor can do.
• 40:34
Speaker 17: He can do three or four jobs at a time.
• 40:37
Speaker 17: So that's just my opinion.
• 40:39
Speaker 4: That's just your opinion of one mayor.
• 40:41
Speaker 2: But I have a feeling it's not just the opinion
• 40:43
Speaker 2: of one mayor because I've heard it from other mayors
• 40:45
Speaker 2: on the show too. Hey, mayor, before we let you go,
• 40:47
  Speaker 2: what else is.
• 40:48
Speaker 4: New in Nitro? What's what's getting you excited at Nitro?
• 40:50
Speaker 2: What's what's Joe Stevens and your team got crank it
• 40:53
Speaker 2: up in Nitro these days?
• 40:55
Speaker 17: Well, I'll tell you this. Of course, now we're going
• 40:58
Speaker 17: we have about fourteen million dollars. City council is starting
• 41:01
Speaker 17: to try to determine how it's going to be spent.
• 41:04
Speaker 17: But we, like most cities, have a pension problem, pension deficit,
• 41:10
Speaker 17: and so we're looking at probably putting about ten million
• 41:14
Speaker 17: dollars to our pensions, which will make them with our plans,
• 41:18
Speaker 17: should make them fully funded by twenty thirty, which would
• 41:20
Speaker 17: get rid of a huge liability the city has. So
• 41:24
Speaker 17: right now, to me, that's the most exciting thing that
• 41:27
Speaker 17: this is really a once in a generation lifetime for
• 41:30
Speaker 17: the City of Nitro to really get his finances in
• 41:34
  Speaker 17: order now.

Speaker 2: same administration as Secretary of States. Well that was gonna
• 44:26
Speaker 2: you know. I'll say the interesting thing about that. Chris Warner,
• 44:29
Speaker 2: of course is the Secretary of State. Now, his brother
• 44:31
Speaker 2: Mac held that position for two terms at one point,
• 44:34
Speaker 2: and I understand he has now resigned from that office.
• 44:37
Speaker 2: Mac Warner, former Secretary of State, was working for the
• 44:40
Speaker 2: Department of Justice, So Chris Warner, as current Secretary of State,
• 44:44
Speaker 2: could have found himself. And again, Department of Justice has
• 44:47
Speaker 2: got like twenty thousand employees, but they could have found
• 44:50
Speaker 2: themselves at odds with his brother, and I thought, well,
• 44:55
Speaker 2: that's going to make for an interesting Thanksgiving dinner. So
• 44:58
Speaker 2: but apparently Macwarner is no longer working there. From what
• 45:00
Speaker 2: I understand, Wilson Meadows are to Capitol. We'll get to
• 45:03
Speaker 2: them momentarily. I do want to knock out a couple
• 45:04
Speaker 2: of texts though. Text says Trump and MAGA are tanking.
• 45:09
Speaker 2: Expect the rhetoric around trans people and border security to increase.

Speaker 2: money to show she cares about West Virginia.
• 45:24
Speaker 4: Too bad, it only happens once every six years.
• 45:27
Speaker 2: Texas, West Virginia losing cold jobs, West Virginia closing schools,
• 45:31
Speaker 2: West Virginia cities can't maintain utilities. We're told West Virginia's
• 45:35
Speaker 2: on its way up and things are getting better. Where's
• 45:37
Speaker 2: the disconnect from what's being happening and what is being said?
• 45:42
Speaker 2: Texas David said that our government will drop flags half

• 45:46
Speaker 4: But won't forfallen soldiers. Texas.

Speaker 2: hundred percent if I'll be here or not, but I'm
• 46:17
Speaker 2: gonna try, mainly because they told me I couldn't do it,
• 46:19
Speaker 2: so that's kind of Gavin I am. If not, I'll
• 46:22
Speaker 2: will s out and just can't do it. I'll be

Speaker 2: back on Friday, Dale Cooper, though we'll be covering the

Speaker 2: to be here at least for some of Metro News

Speaker 2: and me coming up at noon today, powered by a
• 47:12
Speaker 2: Selango law. A couple of quick notes here. Today is
• 47:16
Speaker 2: the anniversary of the Charleston Woolworth Fire. On this date
• 47:19
Speaker 2: in nineteen forty nine, seven firefighters were killed in a
• 47:22
Speaker 2: fire at the historic Woolworth store in Charleston. A memorial
• 47:25
Speaker 2: service slated for ten this morning on the site which
• 47:28
Speaker 2: is now around where Rock City Cake Company is. That
• 47:30
Speaker 2: is happening at ten this morning. Let us go now
• 47:34
Speaker 2: to the Capitol and check in with our friends Wilson
• 47:36
  Speaker 2: and Meadows.
• 47:37
Speaker 4: Good morning fellas, Good morning Dave Allen. How are you
• 47:40
  Speaker 4: doing doing?
• 47:41
  Speaker 5: Wow?
• 47:42
Speaker 19: You got really quiet there. We can barely hear you.
• 47:44
Speaker 4: Okay, would you want me to stand up and talk louder,
• 47:47
Speaker 4: yes please, Okay, all right.
• 47:50
Speaker 2: I'll tell you a quick story because your radio geeks
• 47:52
Speaker 2: will appreciate this. At one point, I was working at
• 47:55
Speaker 2: a station and we were having a little transmission problem
• 48:00
Speaker 2: that things I don't understand. And the owner of the station,
• 48:03
Speaker 2: who is a nice, kindly old lady, her and her
• 48:06
Speaker 2: family own the station. She said, well, the announcers are
• 48:09
Speaker 2: just gonna have to talk louder, true story, true story.
• 48:16
Speaker 19: Rap on the microphone.
• 48:17
Speaker 2: What day is under the Capitol? What's being celebrated there today?
• 48:21
  Speaker 5: Crossover Day?
• 48:22
Speaker 4: Well, I mean I know that, I know that.
• 48:23
Speaker 19: We'll give that a Well, there are pastries and cupcakes
• 48:27
Speaker 19: and gnashing of teeth.
• 48:29
Speaker 5: And renting of clothes. It's crossover day.
• 48:30
Speaker 19: God, today's actually prevention day at the Capitol. So you've
• 48:33
Speaker 19: got a lot of different nonprofit organizations here, a lot
• 48:36
Speaker 19: of students here with Game Changer in the building as well.
• 48:40
Speaker 19: So there is quite a bit of buzz in the
• 48:42
  Speaker 19: rotunda today.
• 48:43
Speaker 2: All right, And with it being crossover day, this is
• 48:46
Speaker 2: the last day to get those bills up.
• 48:48
Speaker 4: What are you hearing? It depends on who you ask day. Well,
• 48:53
Speaker 4: give give me two examples.
• 48:55
Speaker 19: Okay, So we spent some time with the Senate whip
• 48:59
Speaker 19: this morning and Queen talk to him for a little bit.
• 49:02
Speaker 4: You know, there are some bills.
• 49:03
Speaker 19: Moving over there, got some social ramifications to it. There's
• 49:06
Speaker 19: the Cabaret bill on that side of the building. We're
• 49:09
Speaker 19: keeping an eye. I think TJ has several notifications set
• 49:13
Speaker 19: for Team West Virginia that's expected to pass over in the.
• 49:17
  Speaker 4: House this morning.
• 49:17
Speaker 19: Ever, keep an eye on Rayleigh's Law. It's up for
• 49:19
Speaker 19: first reading TJ. They're gonna have to suspend rules to
• 49:22
Speaker 19: get that out of the House today.
• 49:23
Speaker 5: And I think after what we saw in House Education
• 49:26
Speaker 5: with that debate and how it cleared out of there,
• 49:28
  Speaker 5: I think that will happen. I think it's a clear
• 49:30
Speaker 5: sign to the Senate. What remains to be seen, DAVI,
• 49:32
Speaker 5: is once it goes over, will the Senate give it
• 49:34
Speaker 5: an up or down vote? So that's what remains to
• 49:37
Speaker 5: be seen, Dave Balley.
• 49:38
Speaker 2: Well, and I will say this about Rayley's Law. On
• 49:40
Speaker 2: its surface, I don't think anybody could possibly be against it. However,
• 49:44
Speaker 2: I think it's I'm not defending the contrary, no no, no,
• 49:47
Speaker 2: I was going to say.
• 49:48
Speaker 4: Here's what I was going to say. On surface, people
• 49:49
Speaker 4: you read it, you think, okay, how could anybody be
• 49:51
  Speaker 4: against this?
• 49:52
Speaker 2: I think that some people that have questions about it
• 49:56
Speaker 2: think that it may be a bit of an overreach.
• 49:58
Speaker 2: And I've heard and I've read some comments, some exposts
• 50:01
Speaker 2: from some of the legislators who have said, look, we're
• 50:04
Speaker 2: not against this in theory, but it's the devil, so
• 50:07
Speaker 2: to speak, is in the details.
• 50:10
Speaker 19: Which is every piece of legislation. That's why I have
• 50:13
Speaker 19: said continuously you cannot just out of what you think
• 50:17
Speaker 19: maybe a principal stands say nope, we're not going to
• 50:20
Speaker 19: talk about it. Bring it to the floor, talk it out,
• 50:23
Speaker 19: debate it, offer it. If there's something you don't like,
• 50:25
Speaker 19: offer amendments, and they'll be voted up or down. That's
• 50:27
Speaker 19: how the process is supposed to work, and you can
• 50:29
Speaker 19: get a bill that's crafted so it does its intended
• 50:32
Speaker 19: thing and you avoid the majority of the unintended consequences.
• 50:36
Speaker 5: There the other part of this, Davis, this bill does
• 50:39
Speaker 5: so little. When you read it, it's two thirds of
• 50:42
Speaker 5: a page, and it is not permissive and pertaining to
• 50:45
Speaker 5: a lot of things. It can only take a surgical approach,
• 50:50
Speaker 5: and it can only be utilized if a mandatory reporter,
• 50:54
Speaker 5: so that curtails a lot of people that can make
• 50:56
Speaker 5: a report. Right there, a mandatory reporter issues the report,
• 51:01
Speaker 5: then the process starts. Doesn't affect truancy. If you're pulling
• 51:04
Speaker 5: the kid out of school or homeschooling them or sending
• 51:07
Speaker 5: them somewhere else because you suspect abuse from some of
• 51:10
Speaker 5: the school's staff, it doesn't apply there. It is so
• 51:13
Speaker 5: narrowly tailored, Dave Allen that folks really need to read
• 51:18
Speaker 5: it and see what it does and stop focusing on
• 51:20
Speaker 5: what it does not do.
• 51:21
Speaker 4: In my humble opinion, well, I.
• 51:22
Speaker 2: Am going to be keeping a close eye on this
• 51:24
Speaker 2: adult cabaret thing. I mean vested interest, a vested interest
• 51:29
Speaker 2: in the adult cabaret thing, because yet again we have
• 51:32
Speaker 2: people that because we've solved all of the rest of
• 51:35
Speaker 2: the state's problems, everybody's got clean water, and everybody's got
• 51:37
Speaker 2: all the stuff, we are going to we are going
• 51:40
Speaker 2: to we're going to crack down on adult entertainment and
• 51:44
Speaker 2: whatever falls under that category.
• 51:46
Speaker 5: You know this business man, and it is it's a business.
• 51:49
Speaker 5: We have an election coming up. We need some red
• 51:51
Speaker 5: meat if you're far far, far right.
• 51:53
Speaker 4: And that's what these things are meant to do.
• 51:54
Speaker 2: Your water in Wayne County and McDowell County is still brown.
• 51:57
Speaker 2: But by god, we shut down the strippers. We're not
• 51:59
Speaker 2: gonna have at all. Right, that's a campaign commercial, you know,
• 52:03
Speaker 2: vote for Dave On all right, Uh no, all right, boys,
