- 0:00Speaker 1: Now from the Star Rentals Sports Test Jordan ninety three
- 0:03Speaker 1: point three kJ RFM sports headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Gooi Morning, Happy Thursday. Headlines are brought here by Frost
- 0:10Speaker 2: Brewed course Light Choos Chill. Turns out we know why
- 0:13Speaker 2: Nick emun Worry is on the physically unable to perform
- 0:15Speaker 2: list for the Seahawks. He had ankle surgery prior to
- 0:19Speaker 2: prior to emphasizing prior to reporting in the past week
- 0:23Speaker 2: the Seahawks training camp. I got the timing of his
- 0:25Speaker 2: surgery confirmed to me this morning in the story I
- 0:27Speaker 2: write for the News Tribune. It's up at the Newstribune
- 0:29Speaker 2: dot com right now. The timing of that surgery before
- 0:33Speaker 2: the end of reporting time for training camp, plus the
- 0:37Speaker 2: arthroscopic nature of the surgery, is why the team believes
- 0:39Speaker 2: Emon Warri will play Week one against the Patriots in
- 0:41Speaker 2: the NFL kickoff game. He's on the physically unable to
- 0:44Speaker 2: perform list to begin training camping come off it at
- 0:46Speaker 2: any time he passes a physical. The Mariners lost the
- 0:50Speaker 2: game in the Series of the Red yesterday five to
- 0:52Speaker 2: three after leading three to two. This is how it happened.
- 0:55Speaker 2: In the seventh inning. You're South Stewart not out of
- 1:04Speaker 2: the woods. The All Star stands in.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Two ops two to one, one run lead for the Americas,
- 1:08Speaker 1: swings and drives it high deep.
- 1:10Speaker 2: To right field that.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Goes can't double it is god Sun. Stewart drives one
- 1:17Speaker 3: just up the right field fence, a three run opposite field,
- 1:22Speaker 3: go ahead home run for the rookie five to three
- 1:25Speaker 3: Reds on the bomb by sound.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Pope Pourria calls there, Gary Hill Junior friend of ours,
- 1:31Speaker 2: Marion's Radio Aaron Goldsmith and the Mariners TV and the
- 1:33Speaker 2: Reds Radio TV call I should say Pizardo giving up
- 1:37Speaker 2: a season high three runs on one swing after he
- 1:39Speaker 2: was one out of getting away from it. That turned
- 1:41Speaker 2: a three two lead for the MS into a five
- 1:43Speaker 2: to three loss three and three on the home stand
- 1:45Speaker 2: against the bottom dwelling Giants and Cincinnati. That pretty much
- 1:48Speaker 2: fits a team that's still trying to get back to
- 1:50Speaker 2: five hundred LI alone first place in the America League West.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Mariners can get back to first place starting Tomorrow night.
- 1:55Speaker 2: They play a four game series month through Monday at
- 1:59Speaker 2: the first place Range. Drew Seattle's one half game behind
- 2:01Speaker 2: Texas to top the AL WESTO A really bad night
- 2:05Speaker 2: for the Sounders last night has heard here on ninety
- 2:07Speaker 2: three point three KJR. They lost three to one at Austin.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That's eight two they've been outscored since the two losses
- 2:13Speaker 2: since coming back from the World Cup break. In the
- 2:16Speaker 2: NHL this morning, thirty seven year old Patrick Kane has
- 2:18Speaker 2: agreed to a two year contract to return to where
- 2:21Speaker 2: he became a superstar, the Chicago Blackhawks. He's played the
- 2:24Speaker 2: last four seasons with the Rangers and the Red Wings.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Now onto the show on Thursday. What is going on
- 2:29Speaker 2: in downtown Seattle today? It took me forty five minutes
- 2:32Speaker 2: to get from Roosevelt to Elliott Bay. It's like three miles, Yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 4: It is. It was pretty busy out there.
- 2:39Speaker 5: I usually take the roads that get me onto Fifteenth
- 2:43Speaker 5: and that's how I come in.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And it was pretty busy if you.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Take the Ballard Bridge and get on fifteenth, or even
- 2:51Speaker 2: come across through Fremont and pass SPU and get on fifteenth.
- 2:55Speaker 2: If you get there at the wrong time, like when
- 2:57Speaker 2: the cruise ships have come in. Oh yeah, and Magnolia. Holy,
- 3:01Speaker 2: it's just stopped. So word do the wise. It stopped
- 3:05Speaker 2: today on Fifteenth from where the cruise ships go in.
- 3:08Speaker 5: I got in early, and I avoid I five at
- 3:11Speaker 5: all costs.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I do not like to do that.
- 3:14Speaker 2: South as bad news. Right now, from the University district
- 3:17Speaker 2: to downtown, it's like forty five minutes. Forty minutes from
- 3:20Speaker 2: downtown from the district instruction. Yeah, yeah, I would have
- 3:24Speaker 2: been here earlier. But I wrote a story this morning
- 3:26Speaker 2: for the News Tribune because I got confirmation exactly when
- 3:29Speaker 2: Nick emon Wri's ankle surgery was. Brady Henderson at BSPN
- 3:33Speaker 2: dot com broke the story yesterday that he had ankle
- 3:35Speaker 2: surgery Arthur scopic, and that's why he's on the physically
- 3:38Speaker 2: enable to perform list. I'll tell you everything I learned
- 3:41Speaker 2: this morning, the timing of it, what the Seahawks thing,
- 3:44Speaker 2: and the Seahawks who stands to gain the most, and
- 3:47Speaker 2: the huge opportunity he's got now during training camp that
- 3:50Speaker 2: it looks like even Warri is going to miss the
- 3:51Speaker 2: most of I was at the yard yesterday after doing
- 3:54Speaker 2: the show Jimmy's on first, went inside and watched the
- 3:57Speaker 2: Reds and the Mariners. Saw a few interesting things maybe
- 4:00Speaker 2: notice on the television broadcast, And I'll tell you I
- 4:04Speaker 2: don't care. He went, oh, for four yesterday and over
- 4:06Speaker 2: five to night before batting first, where he should be
- 4:08Speaker 2: cold Young. He is a ballplayer. I saw something yesterday
- 4:12Speaker 2: in the field. It got overlooked because of the three
- 4:15Speaker 2: run homer Bizardo gave up, but on the play right
- 4:17Speaker 2: before the home run, I saw something that's like, man,
- 4:20Speaker 2: that guy could play and keep him at one. I
- 4:23Speaker 2: know he's over his last. Nay, keep him at one.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Cold Emerson, by the way, is now three for his
- 4:27Speaker 2: last thirty two. Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 5: We had that conversation yesterday about you know, would it
- 4:35Speaker 5: ruin the confidence or is it good or not good
- 4:39Speaker 5: to do that, because we've seen a past here where
- 4:42Speaker 5: really good players who have come up too early Falter Yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 5: well you.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Will still wear coming to ten jerseys to Mariner games
- 4:50Speaker 2: and then.
- 4:51Speaker 4: You know, going in the way back machine to Dustin Ackley.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 4: So I don't know which is better, to be honest.
- 5:00Speaker 2: The difference of course here as they're paying ninety million
- 5:03Speaker 2: dollars to cold Emerson guaranteed up.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Front, right, But does that does that keep him here?
- 5:08Speaker 5: Does it allow them to do whatever they.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Want to do?
- 5:11Speaker 2: I think it keeps him here. Brandon Donovan has begun
- 5:15Speaker 2: his rehab stint and he's well into that now and
- 5:18Speaker 2: that's what this question is coming about. And when Donovan
- 5:20Speaker 2: comes back, Donovan is not a natural third basement, so
- 5:23Speaker 2: it's not a guarantee he goes back to third, but
- 5:25Speaker 2: he most likely will go to third base. And what
- 5:27Speaker 2: that mean for cold Emerson, JP Crawford. Pe Crawford didn't
- 5:29Speaker 2: play yesterday night after getting pulled from the game. Jlio
- 5:34Speaker 2: Rodriguez did play yesterday, but he was the designated hitter.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Did not play in the field a couple of nights
- 5:39Speaker 2: after the hamstring issue relief though yesterday at Emerson Handcock
- 5:44Speaker 2: back to his stellar self after remember that time he
- 5:47Speaker 2: tried to grab the ball bare handed in Tampa Bay
- 5:49Speaker 2: his last start before the All Star Break. He only
- 5:51Speaker 2: lasted one and two thirds innings in that start. Well,
- 5:53Speaker 2: yesterday he was brilliant, but the rules got him again.
- 5:56Speaker 2: We'll talk about the rules, the pitching rules the Mariners
- 5:59Speaker 2: had they need to and then these rules if they're
- 6:00Speaker 2: going to go to six man rotation and have three
- 6:02Speaker 2: triple A starters in the bullpen, I'm going to talk
- 6:05Speaker 2: about that. It just struck me as I was watching
- 6:07Speaker 2: the sixth inning and watching Bizardo warm up and Emerson
- 6:10Speaker 2: Hancock glanced out to the bullpen and he goes. You
- 6:12Speaker 2: could just see him look like, uh oh, I got
- 6:15Speaker 2: to shove fast because I'm about to come out again.
- 6:17Speaker 2: He knew it, even though he only'll give him two
- 6:19Speaker 2: runs through six innings. We'll talk about those rules. What
- 6:23Speaker 2: the hell's going on in Portland with the Blazers and
- 6:26Speaker 2: Kevin Collaboro. By the way, Kevin Collabora, I think's been
- 6:29Speaker 2: on every show but a baking show here in Seattle
- 6:32Speaker 2: the last forty eight hours.
- 6:33Speaker 4: He's a high commodity.
- 6:35Speaker 2: He's how about a quote say it called it's suboptimal
- 6:40Speaker 2: the Blazers offered to him. A legendary NBA broadcaster said
- 6:44Speaker 2: that it was a suboptimal offer from Tom.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Dundan, and that was him being very diplomatic.
- 6:49Speaker 2: With that suboptimal such a such a low key shade move.
- 6:54Speaker 5: I texted him last night and said, I think that
- 6:56Speaker 5: might be one of the best quotes I've ever read
- 6:58Speaker 5: from you.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So at eleven am, we're gonna talk to Aaron Frendritt.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Fentris is a long time Orgonian writer. It used to
- 7:05Speaker 2: be at Blazer's Beat right a long time friend of mine.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I've had great times on the Seahawks beat with him.
- 7:09Speaker 2: We're gonna talk to Aaron at eleven o'clock from Portland
- 7:11Speaker 2: to find out what's going on with the Blazers the
- 7:14Speaker 2: arena situation. Aaron tells me, I mean, this looks like
- 7:18Speaker 2: Tom Dundon, the new Blazer's owner, is coming straight out
- 7:20Speaker 2: of the Clay Bennett Oklahoma City Playbook, didn't it? It
- 7:24Speaker 2: screams that does. Yes, Aaron said, Wait a minute, there's
- 7:27Speaker 2: a difference here in the arena situations between Portland and
- 7:30Speaker 2: Seattle Beck in the two thousands. We'll talk to Aaron
- 7:33Speaker 2: at eleven o'clock about that. Eleven thirty your talkbacks, you
- 7:35Speaker 2: go to the top back Mike. The little red icon
- 7:38Speaker 2: on the nine three three KJR dot com website or
- 7:40Speaker 2: on the iHeartRadio app, which you can download for free
- 7:42Speaker 2: if you haven't already done it at nine through three
- 7:45Speaker 2: KJR dot com is a little red talkback button. Jessmin
- 7:47Speaker 2: loves talkbacks segment and I hear from you she'd rather
- 7:51Speaker 2: sprinkle him throughout the whole two hours.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I would, but I do need some editing time.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yes, thirty seconds or last please and we'll play back
- 8:00Speaker 2: your talkbacks. Will also read back your text on the
- 8:02Speaker 2: the komodage text line four nine four to five one
- 8:04Speaker 2: will do that at eleven thirty. We do that every
- 8:06Speaker 2: day at that time. The first question that I have
- 8:08Speaker 2: the lead off the show today on the text line,
- 8:10Speaker 2: what's your level concern with Nick even worry? Keeping in
- 8:12Speaker 2: mind it is January, but that pup list designation a
- 8:16Speaker 2: couple days ago that seemed like a precaution is Jessmin
- 8:18Speaker 2: and I talked about yesterday a little more significant than
- 8:21Speaker 2: that now that we've confirmed he had the ankle surgery.
- 8:25Speaker 2: But it is July. I've done this enough to know
- 8:28Speaker 2: what happens in July does not make the season. But
- 8:31Speaker 2: what's your level of concern with Nick? Even worriy? Having
- 8:33Speaker 2: ankle surgery is arthroscopic. That means a pencil sized camera
- 8:37Speaker 2: into a small incision in the ankle. I'll tell you
- 8:40Speaker 2: what I learned about that this morning as well. We'll
- 8:42Speaker 2: talk about that. But four nine four to five one,
- 8:44Speaker 2: what's your level concern with Nick emun worry? And we'll
- 8:46Speaker 2: talk about who steps up? All right, let me tell
- 8:48Speaker 2: you what I learned this morning. I got to confirm
- 8:50Speaker 2: from the league source, because there were talk that wait
- 8:52Speaker 2: a minute, nick emun Worriy had a youth football camp
- 8:55Speaker 2: last weekend and apparently he was walking around just fine.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It's with Corey and Smith. The friend of the station
- 9:02Speaker 2: and a fellow beat writer said that he saw the
- 9:05Speaker 2: Nicki Manworriy football camp that he didn't have a boot on.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So then I started thinking, Okay, what's that mean. Did
- 9:10Speaker 2: he have the surgery after last weekend after he reported
- 9:13Speaker 2: to training camp? Right, because that would push back a
- 9:16Speaker 2: recovery timeline. Wasn't it if you the later you had it?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Or did he have it prior to reporting to training camp?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Players don't have to report on Friday. The deadline for
- 9:25Speaker 2: veterans is to report Friday. You can report whenever you want.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And when you do report to training camp, the first
- 9:30Speaker 2: thing you do is you take a physical exam because
- 9:33Speaker 2: you cannot practice and begin a new league year without
- 9:36Speaker 2: a past physical. So Emon Warrey obviously showed up early
- 9:39Speaker 2: because he failed the physical and that's why the Seahawks
- 9:41Speaker 2: put him on the physical unable to Perform list. Why
- 9:44Speaker 2: did he fail the physical? We now know is he
- 9:46Speaker 2: had the surgery, so I asked around, and I found
- 9:49Speaker 2: out this morning that that surgery was prior to him
- 9:51Speaker 2: reporting to training camp, so prior to within the last week.
- 9:56Speaker 2: That's a couple of weeks earlier than it could have been,
- 9:59Speaker 2: which means he decided antasis isn't right and did it
- 10:02Speaker 2: before he got here, and then he got here and said, hey, guys,
- 10:04Speaker 2: this is what we're doing. No, of course he didn't
- 10:07Speaker 2: do this on his own. He'd been talking to Seahawks.
- 10:08Speaker 2: The whole time point is because the surgery was middle
- 10:12Speaker 2: to early July, if not earlier, prior to him reporting that,
- 10:17Speaker 2: and the arthroscopping nature of the surgery again non invasive,
- 10:21Speaker 2: relatively non invasive, a small incision in a microscopic camera.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That is why the Seahawks believe he will play September
- 10:28Speaker 2: ninth in the NFL opener against the Patriots at Lumenfield.
- 10:33Speaker 2: In the meantime, who's this benefit the most? Well, They
- 10:37Speaker 2: drafted a guy this year they think can be nick
- 10:40Speaker 2: Emon Warri like in multiple roles in the middle of
- 10:42Speaker 2: the defense, from safety on up to linebacker, and that's
- 10:45Speaker 2: Bud Clark, the second round draft pick from TCU, And
- 10:48Speaker 2: I saw in OTAs in mini camps during the spring
- 10:52Speaker 2: practices that, yes, they are moving him around. He was
- 10:56Speaker 2: with the second team defense, but with the starters. When
- 10:59Speaker 2: they split the field with the Seahawks practice, they at
- 11:01Speaker 2: the end of the practice, one of the portions is
- 11:03Speaker 2: they split the field on one end in the red zone.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Are the starters against the starters at the other end
- 11:09Speaker 2: distant reserves. I'm talking like third and four stringers versus
- 11:11Speaker 2: third and four stringers. Think Jalen Milroe in the third
- 11:15Speaker 2: string offense against the third string defense. But Clark was
- 11:19Speaker 2: with those ones versus ones on the ones end of
- 11:21Speaker 2: the field the entire time during camp, as you would expect.
- 11:24Speaker 2: But now that role gets elevated. Here's another thing that
- 11:28Speaker 2: became clearer once we got the word and confirmed that
- 11:31Speaker 2: even where he had surgery. Brendan Johnson, the former Oregon
- 11:35Speaker 2: Duck for one year in Duke Blue Devil before that,
- 11:38Speaker 2: cornerback Eagles waived him after he had a practice squad
- 11:42Speaker 2: season in three games with the Eagles last year. The
- 11:44Speaker 2: Seahawks signed Brendan Johnson on Tuesday. Johnson has experienced playing
- 11:48Speaker 2: in the box closer to the line of scrimmage, as
- 11:50Speaker 2: well as back outside in pass coverage. So there's another
- 11:53Speaker 2: multiplicity guy as a depth piece behind Clark and others
- 11:57Speaker 2: who could play the multiple roles. There's nobody as good
- 12:01Speaker 2: at those jobs as Nicky mon Worry, of course, but
- 12:04Speaker 2: in the meantime this is a huge opportunity for Bud Clark.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I wrote the story about it at the Newstribune dot com.
- 12:09Speaker 2: It's up now. I posted about an hour or so
- 12:10Speaker 2: ago about the timeline of the surgery for nick E
- 12:15Speaker 2: moun Worriy prior to him reporting to training camp, a
- 12:18Speaker 2: key point because that speeds up his recovery time and
- 12:22Speaker 2: Bud Clark's opportunity now. The medical experts say that an
- 12:26Speaker 2: arthroscopic surgery, usually for an ankle, usually requires one or
- 12:31Speaker 2: two weeks of immobilization, boot and then up to four
- 12:37Speaker 2: weeks or so of rehab, and that a full return
- 12:41Speaker 2: to quote intense sports is up to two months, well
- 12:44Speaker 2: two months from early July. I would be early September,
- 12:46Speaker 2: which is why the Seahawks believe he's going to play
- 12:48Speaker 2: Week one. Anyway, McDonald doesn't need to have Nicky Manworrey
- 12:54Speaker 2: on the field in July or Argust. He doesn't. He's
- 12:57Speaker 2: already proven even wore. He has already proven himself well
- 13:01Speaker 2: entrenched in his defense in multiple roles, so that is
- 13:04Speaker 2: not the concern. The concern is a course, when he
- 13:06Speaker 2: does come back, how does he respond. Is the ankle
- 13:08Speaker 2: fully healed? The fact that he didn't think the ankle
- 13:11Speaker 2: was fully healed is why he had the surgery in
- 13:13Speaker 2: the first place. So that's where it stands now. He's
- 13:17Speaker 2: on the physically unable to perform list, again reiterating the
- 13:20Speaker 2: rules on that a player can come back from the
- 13:22Speaker 2: pup list if he's on the start of it at camp.
- 13:24Speaker 2: He can come back anytime during training camp once he
- 13:26Speaker 2: passes a physical. If he does not come off the
- 13:29Speaker 2: pupp list through the entirety of preseason, he can go
- 13:31Speaker 2: on the pup list to begin the regular season, which
- 13:33Speaker 2: would require him to miss a minimum of the first
- 13:35Speaker 2: four games. Zach Sharbonay went on the pup list yesterday,
- 13:39Speaker 2: officially after he reported not a surprise there, of course,
- 13:42Speaker 2: because he had the reconstructive knee surgery only in February
- 13:46Speaker 2: five months ago. Different deal, same Designation's a pupp but
- 13:51Speaker 2: different situation. Charbon Ay to me, I'm much more into
- 13:55Speaker 2: the team. I am much more likely candidate to remain
- 13:57Speaker 2: on puffed through the start of the regular season, which
- 13:59Speaker 2: would mean he missed the first four games. Perhaps he
- 14:02Speaker 2: comes back by mid October, which will be eight months
- 14:04Speaker 2: out from his surgery. Not so with even worry. The
- 14:08Speaker 2: transitory nature of that injury list that he can come
- 14:10Speaker 2: back at any time is the key there. If he
- 14:12Speaker 2: does get better enough that he will be on the field,
- 14:16Speaker 2: say by end or late August, then he could do
- 14:18Speaker 2: that and still be ready for the regular season. But Jessman,
- 14:22Speaker 2: it is an uptick in the severity of the situation.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Not that it's red alarms because it's only July twenty third,
- 14:28Speaker 2: but a different set of conditions.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Now, yeah, absolutely, and someone who has gone through our
- 14:33Speaker 5: arthroscopic surgery myself and everything is way less invasive than
- 14:37Speaker 5: you know when I got my knee repaired.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And I will say that if he.
- 14:43Speaker 5: Was walking around and I don't think we know this
- 14:46Speaker 5: specific date of the surgery, and I also want people
- 14:49Speaker 5: out there to know that he wasn't like willy nilly
- 14:53Speaker 5: going around and just going it went to a backdoor surgeon.
- 14:57Speaker 5: I'm sure he was communicating with the team, but the
- 15:00Speaker 5: team isn't going to communicate that with us as well,
- 15:04Speaker 5: so we don't know all the details when he had it,
- 15:08Speaker 5: what the outcome was. I think there's hippo laws against
- 15:13Speaker 5: that for a certain extent. But I'm not overly worried
- 15:17Speaker 5: about nick Emon Worrie. But it is a little more
- 15:19Speaker 5: intense than we thought it was now that we know
- 15:22Speaker 5: about that surgery.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Right, And we'll talk on Saturday to Mike McDonald. That'll
- 15:26Speaker 2: be the first time he talks after practice, after the
- 15:29Speaker 2: first practice at camp, and not that he'll provide a
- 15:32Speaker 2: ton of clarity, but he'll say they'll think he's ready
- 15:34Speaker 2: for week one, which is what we're all hearing and
- 15:36Speaker 2: what I've been told as well. Four nine four five one.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I've asked you what your level of concern is with
- 15:41Speaker 2: Emon worry and if you think Zach Charbonat's absence is
- 15:45Speaker 2: a huge deal, and when you think the Seahawks need
- 15:48Speaker 2: him back or sooner or later was sure help, But
- 15:50Speaker 2: Jendarium prices that's why they drafted him in the first round.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And I know they're slow playing him publicly and saying, well,
- 15:57Speaker 2: let's see, and George Hallani's in the mix too, but
- 15:59Speaker 2: you don't draft running back in the first round. If
- 16:01Speaker 2: you don't think he can contribute immediately.
- 16:04Speaker 5: I think he was a hidden gem. To be honest,
- 16:07Speaker 5: you know what this team does. We can go all
- 16:10Speaker 5: the way back to the draft and we're like, oh
- 16:12Speaker 5: my gosh, they picked, Oh my gosh, they picked a
- 16:14Speaker 5: running back. And I very much thought that they were
- 16:18Speaker 5: going to trade out of that first round pick. Obviously
- 16:21Speaker 5: they were picking at thirty two, but when we saw
- 16:23Speaker 5: all the trades happen, I still have my trade book
- 16:26Speaker 5: or my draft book out there and seeing all these
- 16:30Speaker 5: things happened right before that thirty second pick. That was
- 16:34Speaker 5: the best player on their board, and I think he
- 16:37Speaker 5: was hidden by Jordan Love.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Jordan Love, sorry, but anyway, he was a little bit
- 16:44Speaker 4: hit it.
- 16:44Speaker 2: He was the second string running back behind Love of
- 16:47Speaker 2: a top ten pick. Exactly that to the to Jessman's point,
- 16:52Speaker 2: but the thing that he needs to do during training camp,
- 16:54Speaker 2: and we talked about this yesterday a little bit, the
- 16:57Speaker 2: pass game, pass block in pass catching. He admits that's
- 17:00Speaker 2: something he has to work on. He didn't do much
- 17:01Speaker 2: of it Notre Dame. He was not called on to
- 17:04Speaker 2: do a lot of that. He did kickoff returning and
- 17:07Speaker 2: early down running outside zone as his specialty, which is
- 17:09Speaker 2: another reason the Seahawks love him. But the past game
- 17:13Speaker 2: is where running backs and rookie years in the NFL
- 17:15Speaker 2: make their mark. You have to pass protect, you have
- 17:18Speaker 2: to catch the ball to backfield. In the spring practices
- 17:21Speaker 2: they really did hammer this catching out of the backfield
- 17:24Speaker 2: aspect to Price's game. And with Jeremiah Love and as
- 17:29Speaker 2: the number one back in Notre Dame, he didn't get
- 17:31Speaker 2: the opportunity to do that a whole lot. So that's
- 17:33Speaker 2: where his learning curve is and they started it right
- 17:36Speaker 2: away in May and June with the practices. That's where
- 17:39Speaker 2: his rampip has to be. That, in fact, is why
- 17:41Speaker 2: George Hallani's stuck as an undrafted rookie from Boise State
- 17:44Speaker 2: a few years ago. He's coming back for now his
- 17:46Speaker 2: third season and he was he excelled in pass blocking
- 17:49Speaker 2: and pass catching on third down. That's why they may
- 17:53Speaker 2: he made the team. That's why he's stuck, and that's
- 17:54Speaker 2: why he's in the running to be getting first team
- 17:57Speaker 2: reps as well. During training camp, Kenny mack Tosh would
- 18:00Speaker 2: have been an option for that. He is now on
- 18:03Speaker 2: the pup list as well. He has twelve months removed
- 18:06Speaker 2: from a very serious knee injury that required his own
- 18:09Speaker 2: reconstructive knee surgery. The thought was he will be back
- 18:12Speaker 2: during training camp at some point. The pup list again
- 18:15Speaker 2: a hedge between whether he can come back during any
- 18:18Speaker 2: time at camp or if he can he can start
- 18:21Speaker 2: the season on the pup list and missed the first
- 18:23Speaker 2: four games as his sarbonate situation. So that's where it
- 18:26Speaker 2: all stands so far. With what the Seahawks have done
- 18:28Speaker 2: this week. It's early. I will tell you that I've
- 18:33Speaker 2: covered in the NFL for twenty five years. It's early.
- 18:36Speaker 2: It's July twenty third, and there's a lot of time
- 18:39Speaker 2: between now, obviously in September ninth, and I will honest,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I'll say this, Jessman, it has overblown the well they
- 18:47Speaker 2: get the rust off and get conditioned ready for the
- 18:49Speaker 2: regular season. A guy like Eman worry. Once he's ready
- 18:53Speaker 2: to play, he'll play. Yes, he doesn't need a whole
- 18:55Speaker 2: lot of ramp up. Yeah, there's football game speed, and
- 18:58Speaker 2: there's football conditioning and getting hit and all of that.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a hitting shape to be in.
- 19:05Speaker 2: But they don't hit in training camp. They really don't.
- 19:07Speaker 2: They don't ever bring guys again basically can't. Now. No,
- 19:10Speaker 2: the rules in the CBA are against it, You're right,
- 19:12Speaker 2: and they don't. They don't go. They don't play until
- 19:16Speaker 2: In most cases, the starters don't play much all in
- 19:18Speaker 2: the preseason. They don't tackle anybody till the opener. Part
- 19:21Speaker 2: of the reason why NFL games are very sloppy and
- 19:23Speaker 2: poor tackling the beginning the season is starters don't play
- 19:26Speaker 2: anymore in the preseason and nobody tackles anyone to ground
- 19:29Speaker 2: in training camps.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yeah, it is interesting to watch it evolve throughout the
- 19:32Speaker 5: season with it. I mean, I call it the violence factor,
- 19:36Speaker 5: and the violence is not there right at the start.
- 19:39Speaker 2: No, and not out through training cap When they bring
- 19:42Speaker 2: guys to ground, they bring out these high jump pit
- 19:45Speaker 2: mats and they land on those. Yeah, nobody goes to ground.
- 19:49Speaker 2: It's just the way. The contracts are too rich, the
- 19:52Speaker 2: CBA limits too much. They just don't do it. And
- 19:55Speaker 2: so my point is, even Warri is not missing a
- 19:58Speaker 2: ton as a defensive player who's tack is a big
- 20:01Speaker 2: big deal, He's not missing a ton by missing some
- 20:04Speaker 2: or most of this training camp. So yeah, they'd love
- 20:07Speaker 2: to have him back sooner than later so they can
- 20:08Speaker 2: condition him and be ready for the season opener. But
- 20:11Speaker 2: I think it's a little overblown when people start talking
- 20:14Speaker 2: about missing time during training camp to get ready for
- 20:16Speaker 2: the regular season. The NFL doesn't want to say that
- 20:18Speaker 2: because they want people to watch the preseason, and of.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Course they do.
- 20:21Speaker 5: But I mean, we've seen it time and time again,
- 20:23Speaker 5: and the CBA has changed over the years that I've
- 20:26Speaker 5: been out here covering this team, and I mean Walter Jones.
- 20:31Speaker 5: Every single year you look at one of you know,
- 20:33Speaker 5: an NFL Hall of Famer and everything.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Do you really need that training camp?
- 20:37Speaker 2: Never hear home and let him stay in Alabama pushing.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Trucks exactly because he's still getting ready. And yeah, I
- 20:44Speaker 5: don't have major concern unless there's a contract hold out.
- 20:48Speaker 4: If guys aren't there.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Speaking in contract, we'll talk about Devin Witherspoon in his situation.
- 20:53Speaker 2: All signs seem like pointing again toward him signing here
- 20:57Speaker 2: in the next few days. Chuck asked me this morning
- 20:59Speaker 2: at nine o'clock, seven o'clock, what I thought. I think
- 21:01Speaker 2: it's gonna happen plus or minus a couple days from
- 21:03Speaker 2: the opening of camp on Saturday up next what I
- 21:07Speaker 2: saw yesterday going to the yard. When you go to
- 21:09Speaker 2: a ball game and are watching it as a fan
- 21:11Speaker 2: and you just watch the game, it's different and you
- 21:14Speaker 2: see stuff that you don't see on television. There were
- 21:16Speaker 2: a couple of things, some concerning, some really positive, even
- 21:20Speaker 2: though the Mariners lost yet again. Eleven o'clock Aaron Fentris
- 21:23Speaker 2: from Portland of the Orgonian that talked about what the
- 21:26Speaker 2: hell is going on with the Blazers in Portland and
- 21:28Speaker 2: Kevin collabor and the arena situation and a new owner.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Eleven thirty where read back your talkbacks and text. On

- 23:21Speaker 5: Who is capable of getting to a computer, or you
- 23:26Speaker 5: can do it on your phone, which most people operate
- 23:29Speaker 5: from these days.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Anyway, I miss Smoker earlier in the show. Remember I
- 23:33Speaker 2: told you the text sign is nothing. If not a
- 23:35Speaker 2: rata paradise. If you say something out of line, they
- 23:38Speaker 2: put you in line quickly. It was subprime that Kevin
- 23:42Speaker 2: Collaboro mentioned as Tom Dundan's offer, which is a dig
- 23:46Speaker 2: of course for a guy who made his fortune and
- 23:48Speaker 2: subprime auto loans. Thanks to Ryan on the Tech Sign
- 23:52Speaker 2: and others for pointing that out. Subprime.
- 23:54Speaker 5: I mean the thing that is literally the way he's organized,
- 23:57Speaker 5: like running this organization since he got there is gowing subprime.
- 24:01Speaker 5: And it makes me nervous for the Blazers, to be honest.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Why is that because the same people who sold Tom
- 24:07Speaker 2: Dundon the Blazers are selling the Cosala family the Seahawks.
- 24:12Speaker 2: There is nothing about the Coslala family that suggests cheap
- 24:16Speaker 2: nine point six billion dollars in the fact that they
- 24:19Speaker 2: are the noe Coesla. The Seahawks new owner is worth
- 24:23Speaker 2: thirteen billion dollars himself. But Tom Dunnan sure is running
- 24:27Speaker 2: it on a cheap down in Portland, it seems, and
- 24:29Speaker 2: he's trying to shake down the civic governments in Portland
- 24:33Speaker 2: and the county down there for improvements of six hundred
- 24:36Speaker 2: million dollars in more of the Rose Garden or whatever
- 24:38Speaker 2: they call it the Motor Center. Now, we're going to
- 24:41Speaker 2: talk at eleven o'clock to Aaron Fentras of The Oregonian,
- 24:45Speaker 2: longtime friend of mine, about what's going on down in Portland,
- 24:48Speaker 2: how it may relate to the Sonics, how maybe it
- 24:50Speaker 2: doesn't relate to the Sonics in leaving for Oklahoma City
- 24:53Speaker 2: twenty some years ago and the possibility of them coming
- 24:57Speaker 2: back as an expansion team. Kevin Collabora, by the way,
- 24:59Speaker 2: will be on our station tomorrow at nine am with
- 25:03Speaker 2: Chuck Polin Ashley Ryan.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Yeah, that'll be great. I love his dulcet tones. He
- 25:09Speaker 4: could read a dictionary to me and I would listen.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Casey Man I put it on Twitter yesterday. But come on,
- 25:16Speaker 2: is it not natural now that he's not going to
- 25:18Speaker 2: be the Blazers broadcaster, that he hangs out for a
- 25:20Speaker 2: couple of years, maybe does some college games, do some freelance,
- 25:23Speaker 2: maybe some national network stuff, and be ready for the
- 25:25Speaker 2: return of the Sonics. I mean, bring Marcus Johnson back
- 25:28Speaker 2: while you're at it.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Phenomenal.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Come on.
- 25:32Speaker 5: But yeah, when yes, that was the first thought that
- 25:36Speaker 5: I went to because when I first moved out here,
- 25:38Speaker 5: I was working with Kevin and I got to produce
- 25:41Speaker 5: a bunch of ESPN radio broadcasts with him.
- 25:44Speaker 4: They were national games and all that.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Like.
- 25:47Speaker 4: He is highly coveted, of course, but he.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Is the one that I just remember this when I
- 25:52Speaker 5: started having conversations with him, he was not going to Oka.
- 25:56Speaker 2: See No, and got it to him.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Yes, stuck his foot in the ground here on Seattle soil.
- 26:03Speaker 2: He's from Indiana, so he's from the Midwest. He and
- 26:06Speaker 2: his brother both. I met his brother who is the
- 26:07Speaker 2: play by play guy for the Indiana Pacers, who is
- 26:10Speaker 2: fantastic in his own right. Yes, and I met him
- 26:12Speaker 2: at the National Sports Media Awards ceremony in North Carolina
- 26:16Speaker 2: when we were both honored as national sports writer and
- 26:18Speaker 2: he was a state National Broadcaster of the Year for Indiana. Yeah,
- 26:23Speaker 2: they're Midwest guys. And he said, no, no, thanks, I'm
- 26:25Speaker 2: not going to the dust Bowl. I'm staying in the
- 26:28Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest. Honor that man, reward him for staying in
- 26:32Speaker 2: the Pacific Northwest and make him new Sonics owners. Where
- 26:34Speaker 2: we are, Samantha Halloway, We went to Friends Gates one
- 26:37Speaker 2: rough sports of their team. Whoever ends up bringing out
- 26:39Speaker 2: the Sonics back to Seattle get Kevin Gilabro please poor
- 26:43Speaker 2: forvar He'll be on nine o'clock tomorrow with Chuck Pyl
- 26:46Speaker 2: and Ashley Ryan here on ninety three point three KJFM.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I said the yard yesterday after doing the show at
- 26:51Speaker 2: Jimmy's on first. Mariners have a three two lead into
- 26:55Speaker 2: the sixth. Emerson Hancock really encouraging start the one after
- 27:00Speaker 2: before the All Star break. He tried to catch that
- 27:02Speaker 2: one hopper in Tampa Bay back to him with his
- 27:04Speaker 2: bare hand, and he lasted only an enning in two
- 27:07Speaker 2: thirds and at the time when you said, hey, it's
- 27:09Speaker 2: going to really help it, he has his extended break
- 27:10Speaker 2: from the All Star break. It it did. He allowed
- 27:13Speaker 2: only two runs through six innings. But I was sitting
- 27:17Speaker 2: there on the top of the sixth and I saw
- 27:19Speaker 2: that his pitch count was in the high eighties. And
- 27:22Speaker 2: you know this team, they are so wedded to the numbers.
- 27:26Speaker 2: And then I see Bizarda warming up in the bullpen
- 27:28Speaker 2: beyond left field. So did Hancock. He looked out there
- 27:31Speaker 2: and you almost you could almost see him shudder. Here
- 27:34Speaker 2: we go, because he now then started to plow and
- 27:37Speaker 2: he got through the first two outs of the inning,
- 27:39Speaker 2: and he's in the high eighties. He's a low nineties
- 27:41Speaker 2: pitch count. The last out of the sixth, the Reds
- 27:45Speaker 2: batter filed off about five or six two strike pitches,
- 27:48Speaker 2: and now his pitch count's ninety five, and you knew
- 27:51Speaker 2: he just knew he's out of the game, even though
- 27:52Speaker 2: it only allowed two runs and six innings, ninety five pitches,
- 27:56Speaker 2: he comes out, He gets out of the inning, perfect inning.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Standing ovation from the fans behind the first base Mariners
- 28:02Speaker 2: dugut because they know the season ticket holders have seen
- 28:04Speaker 2: this act many times. They knew he was done, even
- 28:07Speaker 2: though he didn't need to be ninety five pitches because
- 28:10Speaker 2: the ninety six pitches arm would have fallen off. If
- 28:13Speaker 2: they're gonna stick to these how can let me state this,
- 28:16Speaker 2: How can you stick to such strict adherence to those
- 28:19Speaker 2: pitch counts in length of start rules when you have
- 28:21Speaker 2: six starters, Now, that's an extra day of rest for
- 28:25Speaker 2: each starter, and in Hancock's case, he hadn't pitched since
- 28:28Speaker 2: three days before the All Star break. I mean, if
- 28:31Speaker 2: there's ever a time to say, okay, go another ending
- 28:33Speaker 2: and get to one hundred and five hundred and ten pitches,
- 28:35Speaker 2: that would be this one m Hm, nope, but they
- 28:39Speaker 2: had it set up as they wanted. Remember, the night before,
- 28:42Speaker 2: they saved Bizarto and all the dudes so they could
- 28:45Speaker 2: pitch him in this day game because they had day
- 28:47Speaker 2: game after a night game. So they intentionally lost the
- 28:49Speaker 2: end of the game.
- 28:52Speaker 6: Plan.
- 28:53Speaker 4: We've seen. They followed their.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Plans, but they brought Bizartro in and they had it
- 28:57Speaker 2: set up before Bizartro in the seventh, gave Spire in
- 28:59Speaker 2: the eighth, Munos to save it in a ninth. They
- 29:01Speaker 2: win three to two. I mean it was set up that.
- 29:04Speaker 2: That's a typical Mariners arrangement. Well, Bizardo did what he
- 29:08Speaker 2: has not done all season. He gave up more than
- 29:11Speaker 2: two runs. This is the first time all year in
- 29:14Speaker 2: forty eight appearances that he gave up more than two runs,
- 29:16Speaker 2: and he'd only given up two runs and two appearances.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Right, So it makes sense that they would have confidence
- 29:20Speaker 5: in him going into that.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Right, So that makes sense that he should have taken
- 29:24Speaker 2: the seventh. He was one out away from getting out
- 29:26Speaker 2: of the seventh. Then the three run home or you
- 29:29Speaker 2: heard earlier, five to three, and with the way the
- 29:31Speaker 2: offense has either hit home runs and they don't win,
- 29:35Speaker 2: you know what's Yesterday was the thirty fifth game Jessemon
- 29:38Speaker 2: listeners that the Mariners did not hit a home run
- 29:41Speaker 2: this season. You know what they're reck and you know
- 29:42Speaker 2: how many games they've won when they've not hit a
- 29:44Speaker 2: home run? Of those thirty five.
- 29:45Speaker 4: Very few?
- 29:46Speaker 2: Oh, Joe eight?
- 29:48Speaker 4: Yeah, come on, yeah.
- 29:51Speaker 5: And I know that that's not their game plan is
- 29:54Speaker 5: to win on home runs.
- 29:55Speaker 2: But I think it is. Oh. I think they're pl
- 30:00Speaker 2: I think the way the team's constructed it is Dom Canzone,
- 30:03Speaker 2: Luke Raley, even your fringe guys. They're not manufacturing runs.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Canzone's not bunting and beating out infield singles. He said,
- 30:12Speaker 2: no one runs. He got fifteen of them. I just
- 30:15Speaker 2: think it is the feast or famine thing. It's a
- 30:18Speaker 2: lot more famine than feast with the way pitching is
- 30:20Speaker 2: in the major leagues this year, anyway to say that.
- 30:25Speaker 2: It struck me while sitting there as Bizarta was coming
- 30:27Speaker 2: into the game. We're all over Dan Wilson for his
- 30:31Speaker 2: use in the bullpen in this town, but what does
- 30:33Speaker 2: he have to work with. It's not two but three
- 30:36Speaker 2: triple A relievers. They've got six starters. We talked about
- 30:40Speaker 2: this that leaves you with seven relievers, nearly half of them.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Three are triple A guys because of Brash on the
- 30:47Speaker 2: inj is on the injured list. Vargas hasn't pitched yet
- 30:50Speaker 2: this year. Yeah, I got it, Chris Well is on
- 30:51Speaker 2: the injury But the fact is that they have nearly
- 30:54Speaker 2: half their bullpen are triple A arms. So in any
- 30:57Speaker 2: given night, if you're trying to win a game, Wilson
- 30:59Speaker 2: has four options right now. Bizarro, Spire and Munnos in
- 31:05Speaker 2: that order of priority, are their main options. And that's it.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I mean, when he's got a game online, that's what
- 31:12Speaker 2: he's got. So I mean, yeah, he's mismanaged a bullpen,
- 31:16Speaker 2: but he also has nothing given to him by the
- 31:18Speaker 2: dudes upstairs.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Well, I think the major criticism is when you take
- 31:22Speaker 5: guys out over you know your right, But that's more
- 31:26Speaker 5: of the criticism than.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Those aren't Dan Wilson's rules. Those aren't Dan Wilson's rules.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Dan Wilson's not following his own rules with taking a
- 31:34Speaker 2: guy out who you can't start a new inning, all
- 31:37Speaker 2: that stuff. Pitch eight pitches and you're done because you
- 31:39Speaker 2: can't start. That's not Dan Wilson's no way, that's Dan
- 31:42Speaker 2: Wilson's decision. That's Jerry de Poto. So when people go
- 31:47Speaker 2: all over Dan Wilson for bullpen usage, what's a guy
- 31:51Speaker 2: to do. He's got all these rules, he's got half
- 31:53Speaker 2: his bullpen triple A arms, and you can't pitch dudes
- 31:57Speaker 2: on so many back to back nights. I still say
- 32:01Speaker 2: ferr should pitch back to back then. He was the
- 32:02Speaker 2: closer for the Washington Nationals last year. That's your fourth guy, Ferraro,
- 32:06Speaker 2: and that's it. He's got fer Bizardo, spire in munos
- 32:10Speaker 2: and alien use munos and set situations ninth inning, save
- 32:14Speaker 2: situations with the ninth inning, doesn't matter if the best
- 32:16Speaker 2: batters are coming up in the eighth inning, don't bring
- 32:19Speaker 2: munos in then, because at the ending doesn't have a
- 32:20Speaker 2: number nine on it. I mean, that's their rules. And
- 32:24Speaker 2: so you have these rules, and you have the staffing
- 32:26Speaker 2: of the bullpen, and on top of all of that,
- 32:29Speaker 2: you have the upper echelon telling you you have to
- 32:31Speaker 2: have a six man rotation. So coupling, tripling, all of
- 32:36Speaker 2: that puts Wilson in the situation he's off and in
- 32:39Speaker 2: like two nights ago, when he goes with the triple
- 32:41Speaker 2: A dude to try to say keep it at three
- 32:43Speaker 2: to two. I'm not saying Wilson is a savant in
- 32:46Speaker 2: any stretch of the bullpen usage. But I'm saying he's
- 32:49Speaker 2: got one hand and maybe a couple of fingers of
- 32:51Speaker 2: the other hand tied behind his back. Something to consider.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I mean, when you sit there and you watch and
- 32:58Speaker 2: you're like, I can see what they're thinking here, then spire,
- 33:00Speaker 2: then Munos win three two, But then you realize there
- 33:03Speaker 2: really is no other options besides if bizarre dou gives
- 33:07Speaker 2: it up like he did, what's happened? They lose. I
- 33:10Speaker 2: mean it's a tough deal. Yes, this team, the way
- 33:16Speaker 2: it's constructed, has no margin, no margin. If you don't
- 33:19Speaker 2: hit home runs, you lose, and your bullpen has to
- 33:22Speaker 2: preserve because they won't stretch starters. They have to preserve.
- 33:27Speaker 2: If the starters don't go seven, they're in trouble because
- 33:29Speaker 2: now the bullpen has to give to three innings to
- 33:31Speaker 2: win the game with a six man rotation. I think
- 33:36Speaker 2: it's time to loosen those rules. Get starters one hundred
- 33:39Speaker 2: plus pitches, get in seven innings. I mean, hell, they're
- 33:42Speaker 2: among the league leaders in allowing three runs are fewer
- 33:45Speaker 2: by a starter. They have the talent, they just have
- 33:48Speaker 2: these rules that stifle them. Let's take it. Let's turn
- 33:51Speaker 2: this game over to a bullpen that is really really
- 33:54Speaker 2: awful in key leverage situations because half of it are
- 33:56Speaker 2: triple A guys. Anyway, what I wanted to point out
- 34:02Speaker 2: about Cole Young before the batter, before the three run homer,
- 34:07Speaker 2: there's a runners at first if I remember first and second, No,
- 34:11Speaker 2: there was runner first, excuse me? Line drives single to
- 34:14Speaker 2: center field. The runner running from first to second doesn't
- 34:20Speaker 2: see the ball going into centerfield, and Cole Young runs
- 34:23Speaker 2: over to second base to cover the bag, realizing that
- 34:26Speaker 2: the battery or the runner from first to second did
- 34:28Speaker 2: not know where the ball was. Yeah, so what do
- 34:29Speaker 2: he do? He got into a crouch as if he's
- 34:32Speaker 2: about to receive a throw at second base. The ball
- 34:35Speaker 2: is in center field.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Beautiful gamesmanship.
- 34:38Speaker 2: That's such a ballplayer. Move the runner at second instead
- 34:41Speaker 2: of advancing easily to third on a ball that's in
- 34:44Speaker 2: centerfield right center field slides. He slid into second base
- 34:49Speaker 2: while the ball's in center.
- 34:49Speaker 4: Field, which means he's not going to get up and
- 34:51Speaker 4: be able.
- 34:52Speaker 2: To There were two older Reds fans behind me behind
- 34:54Speaker 2: the third base dugout, who said, what the hell is
- 34:56Speaker 2: he doing? I said, that's Cole Young. Cole Young de
- 35:00Speaker 2: him into sliding in a second. What did that prevent?
- 35:02Speaker 2: That prevented a runner at third with less than two outs? Yep,
- 35:05Speaker 2: which guess what the next guy did. He flewed out
- 35:08Speaker 2: to deep left field. That would have been a run
- 35:11Speaker 2: if Cole Young had not deep that guy. And I
- 35:12Speaker 2: thought to myself, if they win three to two, I'm
- 35:15Speaker 2: talking tomorrow on the show about how Cole Young won
- 35:17Speaker 2: the game with something you'll never find in the box score.
- 35:20Speaker 2: But alas Bizardo gives up on the next batter, the
- 35:23Speaker 2: three run homer, and the play doesn't end up.
- 35:25Speaker 4: It's not Cole Young's fault, though exactly.
- 35:29Speaker 5: I just love seeing things like that because I'm like,
- 35:31Speaker 5: that's gamesmanship and it's not illegal.
- 35:33Speaker 4: It's not banging on a trash can.
- 35:36Speaker 2: That's right. He prevented the runner from advancing the third
- 35:40Speaker 2: in which a fly ball or a while pitch would
- 35:41Speaker 2: score him. And sure enough, there's a deep flyball the
- 35:44Speaker 2: next batter, and I thought to myself, that's Cole Young.
- 35:47Speaker 2: He's twenty two years old. Keep him batting first, keep
- 35:51Speaker 2: him playing every day like he has been the entire season.
- 35:54Speaker 2: The only guy you can count on every day, day
- 35:56Speaker 2: in and day out, and keep him because he does stuff.
- 35:59Speaker 5: Like that, and he is such a good person, like
- 36:02Speaker 5: a good guy. I am in the clubhouse quite a bit.
- 36:05Speaker 5: I go down to the dugouts and report for us
- 36:09Speaker 5: when it comes to home Mariner games, and I talk
- 36:12Speaker 5: to him quite frequently. He is exactly what you'd want
- 36:17Speaker 5: as a person. As a player. He's chill, he's young,
- 36:22Speaker 5: he's only twenty two, and I don't know how you
- 36:24Speaker 5: learn that at such a young age to be like that.
- 36:29Speaker 5: That's veteran status kind of game gamesmanship.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Good job mom and dad as well. Yes, in Zanesville, Ohio,
- 36:37Speaker 2: or no, excuse me, he's in Pittsburgh. It's cold. Emerson
- 36:39Speaker 2: is Zanesville, Ohio. He grew up in Pittsburgh. I'm not
- 36:42Speaker 2: mistake with North Alleghenia High School right outside of downtown Pittsburgh,
- 36:46Speaker 2: just like another good Western Pennsylvania.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Cool, chill, awesome, and you just don't see any stress
- 36:52Speaker 5: getting to him. And I hope as we keep talking
- 36:55Speaker 5: about him being one of the best players on this team,
- 36:59Speaker 5: if not our shop star right now at this point
- 37:01Speaker 5: of the season. I hope that that pressure doesn't come.
- 37:06Speaker 2: He's the MVP of the team, but that's not saying
- 37:09Speaker 2: much when the team's under five hundred. I know, underperforming
- 37:12Speaker 2: as they are, but Cole Young is really good at
- 37:15Speaker 2: the nuances of the game, moving runners, over hitting the
- 37:18Speaker 2: ball when it's pitched outside to the opposite field with
- 37:21Speaker 2: especially two strikes, all of it. Really really really like
- 37:25Speaker 2: Cole Young. It's fun to watch him in person when
- 37:27Speaker 2: you're at the yard. If you do go to a
- 37:28Speaker 2: Mariner game, go check that out. By the way, almost
- 37:31Speaker 2: thirty nine thousand more people came to the game yesterday
- 37:33Speaker 2: on a weekday afternoon in July. Yeah.
- 37:35Speaker 4: I thought that was awesome.
- 37:37Speaker 2: So there again lies the problem if you're a true
- 37:40Speaker 2: hardcore Mariner fan that wants them to win. The business
- 37:43Speaker 2: model's working. So they're below five hundred and averaging thirty
- 37:48Speaker 2: six thousand people a game more than last year.
- 37:51Speaker 4: It's huge.
- 37:52Speaker 5: Like I said, I went on Tuesday night and I
- 37:54Speaker 5: was like, there's lines everywhere. I looked around the stadium
- 37:58Speaker 5: and I'm like, this thing is packed. And you're talking
- 38:00Speaker 5: about yesterday, a Wednesday mattin Agaate.
- 38:03Speaker 2: It was ninety four degrees. Yeah. Up next, recapping the
- 38:06Speaker 2: week so far with the Seahawks. A lot's gone on
- 38:08Speaker 2: and they haven't even started camp yet. We'll talk about that.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Aaron Fentchriss at eleven o'clock from Portland on what the
- 38:13Speaker 2: hell's going on with the Blazers down there in their
- 38:15Speaker 2: new owner. That's next on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Welcome back Greg Bellen, Jessin McIntyre with you on ninety
- 38:49Speaker 2: three point three KJRFM. Aaron Fincher is going to join
- 38:52Speaker 2: us from Portland, coming up at the top of the
- 38:54Speaker 2: hour to talk about what the heck is going on
- 38:57Speaker 2: with new owner Tom Dunnan the Blazer the arenas that
- 38:59Speaker 2: you Kevin collabor saying no thanks from a subprime his
- 39:03Speaker 2: word not ours subprime offer from the owner to remain broadcaster.
- 39:07Speaker 2: The cleaned house in the broadcasting team.
- 39:09Speaker 4: They've cleaned house with every.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Sixty seventy layoffs in the front office.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Are they sending those guys on commercial flights these like
- 39:18Speaker 5: it's just that may be next I it would not
- 39:21Speaker 5: shock me.
- 39:22Speaker 2: The Blazers on Southwest Airlines Toklahoma City through Austin might
- 39:27Speaker 2: line up early. That might be yeah, that might be next. Well,
- 39:31Speaker 2: the Southwest now you don't even line up anymore. They
- 39:33Speaker 2: do the old I think they changed siicket. Everything's gone
- 39:36Speaker 2: away the way it used to be. Assuming they'll be
- 39:38Speaker 2: charging for bags. The Seahawks had a very busy week.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Speaking of air travel, there are a lot of veteran
- 39:44Speaker 2: players who are en route to Seattle right now. Those
- 39:46Speaker 2: have not reported will have to do so by tomorrow.
- 39:49Speaker 2: At this time of tomorrow morning, the deadline for veterans
- 39:52Speaker 2: to report. No sign that anyone won't report, including Devin Witherspoon.
- 39:56Speaker 2: He's going to get a new contract. He's spent all
- 39:58Speaker 2: the pre season mini Campbota's right there, fully engaged and
- 40:03Speaker 2: on the field, So it's not like he's doing some stance. Remember,
- 40:06Speaker 2: he technically has two years remaining on what could be
- 40:09Speaker 2: his deal. He got a one year pickup of his
- 40:11Speaker 2: fifty year option beyond this year, entering the final year
- 40:13Speaker 2: of his rookie deal. They could put him on the
- 40:16Speaker 2: franchise tag for another year after that, but they won't
- 40:19Speaker 2: because he's a centerpiece. They loved him, they love him,
- 40:23Speaker 2: and they want McDonald wants to keep him as a
- 40:25Speaker 2: centerpiece and team leader. They're gonna pay him. They're gonna
- 40:28Speaker 2: pay him thirty one million dollars a year plus. He's
- 40:31Speaker 2: going to be higher paid than Trent McDuffie. It's in
- 40:34Speaker 2: this case he's both good and in good timing. The
- 40:37Speaker 2: way the NFL works, it's not always that the top
- 40:39Speaker 2: guy at a position is the very best player, top
- 40:41Speaker 2: guy in earnings at a position, top contract is always
- 40:44Speaker 2: the best player. It's when his contract comes due, it's
- 40:47Speaker 2: time for him to re up, and then they do
- 40:48Speaker 2: the comps for other guys at his position. And this
- 40:51Speaker 2: just so happens that Witherspoon has been as good and
- 40:56Speaker 2: the timing is right after McDuffie's deal. Now, it'll be
- 40:58Speaker 2: the same thing after Witherspoon signs in the first couple
- 41:01Speaker 2: of days of training camp here within the next week
- 41:03Speaker 2: or so. Then Christian Gonzales in New England will get
- 41:08Speaker 2: the same situation, and then it'll be the same He'll
- 41:12Speaker 2: his agents will judge Witherspoon's and McDuffie's contract. It's always Domino's, yeah,
- 41:16Speaker 2: and so that's the way that goes. But it'll be
- 41:19Speaker 2: thirty one million plus for sure, for the Seahawks cornerback
- 41:24Speaker 2: Probowl Corn three time Corobo cornerback Devin Witherspoon. That's not
- 41:28Speaker 2: all that's going on, though we've talked about the pupp
- 41:31Speaker 2: list situation. Now we know why nick Emon Warry is
- 41:33Speaker 2: on it. If you missed at the top of the
- 41:34Speaker 2: show US detailing I found out confirmed this morning. I
- 41:38Speaker 2: wrote at the News Tribune dot com that the surgery
- 41:40Speaker 2: was earlier this month, before he reported to Seahawks training
- 41:44Speaker 2: camp within the last week. He was one of the
- 41:46Speaker 2: veterans who reported early and in doing so failed to
- 41:49Speaker 2: physical and was PUSS on the physically enable to perform
- 41:52Speaker 2: list for an Arthur's scopic ankle surgery. And the fact
- 41:55Speaker 2: that he had it in July earlier in July, two
- 41:59Speaker 2: months plus before season begins, and the fact that it
- 42:02Speaker 2: was an a scope, not relatively non invasive, just a
- 42:06Speaker 2: small incision that has the Seahawks believing that he will
- 42:10Speaker 2: play September ninth, in the very first game of the
- 42:12Speaker 2: NFL season at Lumenfield against the Patriots. In the meantime,
- 42:17Speaker 2: Bud Clark stands to have a lot of reps with
- 42:19Speaker 2: the ones in that hybrid safety closer to the box
- 42:23Speaker 2: role that Emon Warrey loves to. I don't know that
- 42:25Speaker 2: he's going to be the sam linebacker that even Warry
- 42:28Speaker 2: is when they go to five and six defensive backs
- 42:30Speaker 2: on the field. I'm not saying he's ready for that
- 42:31Speaker 2: as a rookie. Remember it was unnatural how quickly Emon
- 42:36Speaker 2: Worry golombed onto and excelled in every role that McDonald
- 42:40Speaker 2: gave him. He even had on the defensive line against
- 42:43Speaker 2: the Minnesota Vikings at the end late in last season.
- 42:46Speaker 2: I'm not saying Bud Clark's ready for that. Let's see
- 42:48Speaker 2: what Bud Clark can do. But I'm saying he's going
- 42:50Speaker 2: to now Clark, the second round pick from TCU, is
- 42:52Speaker 2: going to get some one rep opportunities in the extra
- 42:56Speaker 2: sub packages that is so much a part of Mike
- 42:58Speaker 2: McDonald's defense sixty seventy per cent of the time last year.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Zach Sharbonay went on the puplist officially yesterday, not a surprise,
- 43:06Speaker 2: not nearly what the Emn Warry situation is. Charbone had
- 43:10Speaker 2: the surgery in mid February eight to twelve months for
- 43:14Speaker 2: reconstructed knee surgery. ACL tears are the norm that would
- 43:18Speaker 2: put him on the early end in mid October puplist.
- 43:21Speaker 2: If you're on the pupplist to begin training camp, you
- 43:23Speaker 2: can be on the pup list. Only guys on the
- 43:25Speaker 2: puplist to begin training camp could be on the pup
- 43:27Speaker 2: list to begin the season, which would mean he'd miss
- 43:29Speaker 2: the first four games as a minimum. Kenny McIntosh also
- 43:33Speaker 2: on the pup list. There may be others if you
- 43:35Speaker 2: go on the publish and come back at any time,
- 43:37Speaker 2: they may put others on the pup list to start
- 43:39Speaker 2: training camp. As the rest of the veterans report between
- 43:41Speaker 2: now and tomorrow, but some news and it also speaks
- 43:45Speaker 2: the national uproar about Emon Worriy also speaks Jesseman to
- 43:49Speaker 2: Super Bowl champions getting more attention.
- 43:51Speaker 5: Well, of course, and I feel like this is kind
- 43:54Speaker 5: of the most understated I've seen the Seahawks. I've only
- 43:59Speaker 5: experienced Super Bowl win with them, but I feel like
- 44:02Speaker 5: they're when it comes to Super Bowl champions, the Rams
- 44:05Speaker 5: are getting a lot more attention than the Seahawks are
- 44:08Speaker 5: as we head into this season. I don't think they're
- 44:12Speaker 5: being as highly vaunted, and I think that's exactly what
- 44:15Speaker 5: Mike McDonald wants exactly, and we just let us fly
- 44:21Speaker 5: under these clouds over here exactly.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Yes, I'm next. We'll go to Portland, find out what's
- 44:26Speaker 2: going on with the Blazers and new ownership, the arena situation,
- 44:28Speaker 2: Kevin Clapp all of it with long time O'gonian writer
- 44:32Speaker 2: Aaron Fentriss. He'll join us next on ninety three point
- 44:34Speaker 2: three KJRFM Now from the Star Rentals Sports Tests. Your
- 44:50Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFM sports headlines. My friend Aaron
- 44:55Speaker 2: Fentris coming up from the Orgoni and in Portland. After
- 44:57Speaker 2: headlines about you by Frost Food Corps. I choose chill, Nick,
- 45:00Speaker 2: I mean Worry ankle surgery prior to reporting the training
- 45:03Speaker 2: camp this past week. I learned that this morning, wrote
- 45:06Speaker 2: at the Newstribute dot com with the timing and the surgery.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Brady Henderson in ESPN dot com breaking the news yesterday
- 45:11Speaker 2: that Emon Worry had arthroscopic surgery on his ankle this month.
- 45:16Speaker 2: The timing of the surgery, the arthroscopic nature means the
- 45:18Speaker 2: Seahawks think he's going to be playing Week one against
- 45:21Speaker 2: the Patriots on September ninth. Barnon's lost the game in
- 45:23Speaker 2: a series of the reds yesterday, leading three to two,
- 45:25Speaker 2: then losing five to three. Is Edward Bizardo gave up
- 45:28Speaker 2: a three run homer season high runs allowed by Bizardo
- 45:31Speaker 2: on one pitch in the seventh inning, turning a loss
- 45:34Speaker 2: into into a loss. Mariners are half game back from Texas.
- 45:37Speaker 2: They're heading to Arlington to play the Rangers in a
- 45:39Speaker 2: four game series that begins tomorrow night through Monday. Then
- 45:43Speaker 2: doesn't get any easier. They go to the Dodgers play
- 45:46Speaker 2: Los Angeles next week.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Well that's fun.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not great. Another bad night, really bad night
- 45:51Speaker 2: for the Sounders. They lost in Austin with two late
- 45:54Speaker 2: goals by Austin. That's now eight goals against and only
- 45:58Speaker 2: two scored in two games since returning from the World
- 46:02Speaker 2: Cup break. And this morning, in the NHL's thirty seven
- 46:04Speaker 2: year old Patrick Kane agreed to a two year contract
- 46:08Speaker 2: to return to where he became an NHL superstar. The
- 46:10Speaker 2: former number one overall pick back to the Chicago Blackhawks.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Patrick Kane to the Blackhawks, he's played the last four
- 46:15Speaker 2: years for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings.
- 46:20Speaker 2: To the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. We go. Aaron Fentris, the
- 46:26Speaker 2: Oregonian longtime Oregonian writer, former Blazers beat writer, A Duck's
- 46:30Speaker 2: beat right, Oregon Ducks beat writer. Now call him this.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Longtime friend of mine joins us from Portland. Hello, sir,
- 46:37Speaker 2: good to talk to you again.
- 46:39Speaker 6: What is up?
- 46:40Speaker 2: Greg?
- 46:41Speaker 6: I got too quick beats? All right? I got here
- 46:43Speaker 6: we go the first one.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Here we go, first one.
- 46:46Speaker 6: I'd someone not assault me before giving you a radio show,
- 46:49Speaker 6: because I want to just poured cold water. But I can't.
- 46:52Speaker 6: I can't figure out if I'm moored perturbed about that
- 46:55Speaker 6: or the fact that you have a radio show. This
- 46:56Speaker 6: is the first time you had me on. I thought
- 46:58Speaker 6: we were dogs. Man, what's up?
- 47:00Speaker 2: That's true? I will take ownership of the second one.
- 47:03Speaker 2: It's a long time overdue. Now I'll call you now,
- 47:05Speaker 2: I'll call you all the time. We'll put you on
- 47:07Speaker 2: the retainer, we'll get your sponsor, and you'll be on
- 47:09Speaker 2: the show.
- 47:09Speaker 6: Now we're talking. There we go.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Man, Man, I've been good. How's coach you still coaching? No?
- 47:17Speaker 6: I gave up the semi pro world. I did. I
- 47:19Speaker 6: did that for like twenty two seasons. My last season
- 47:22Speaker 6: was just a.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Couple of years ago.
- 47:24Speaker 6: My players got old and a young you know what,
- 47:26Speaker 6: you know every Okay, people always cry about the younger generation, but.
- 47:29Speaker 2: It's true, the younger generator.
- 47:31Speaker 6: They don't want to be coach, They're lazy, they don't
- 47:34Speaker 6: want to practice. So I can't figure out if if
- 47:37Speaker 6: that's them or just me getting older and me becoming
- 47:39Speaker 6: more of a curmudgeon.
- 47:40Speaker 2: But yeah, I retired my how old we're getting there?
- 47:43Speaker 2: And my son twenty three refereed some of those semi
- 47:46Speaker 2: pro games in that same league. And he refereed a
- 47:49Speaker 2: game up here in Foster High School and outside Seattle
- 47:53Speaker 2: with with that Oregon team. It's really good. I met
- 47:55Speaker 2: the sponsor of it and the whole thing. But anyway,
- 47:57Speaker 2: what the hell's going on in Portland?
- 47:59Speaker 6: Nice?
- 47:59Speaker 2: What is going on with Portland Tom Dundan? I mean,
- 48:03Speaker 2: cand of known or do less to ingratiate himself. What
- 48:08Speaker 2: he's not exactly making friends down there? What's going on
- 48:10Speaker 2: with the Blazers? Man, Let's first start with how many
- 48:13Speaker 2: more people is he gonna fire? I mean, you get
- 48:15Speaker 2: rid of Kevin Collaboro, you're doing something.
- 48:19Speaker 6: Not only did they get rid of collaborate, well they okay,
- 48:23Speaker 6: which is worse just saying we're not going to bring
- 48:25Speaker 6: you back or offering him pennies on the dollar, ignoring
- 48:29Speaker 6: his legacy. You know, I mean it's like, yeah, it's
- 48:36Speaker 6: it's pretty bizarre down here. And so I covered the
- 48:40Speaker 6: Blazers for five years and I got I moved back
- 48:42Speaker 6: to the Ducks, which at first I was kind of
- 48:44Speaker 6: pissed about. But everything that's happened in the last year,
- 48:50Speaker 6: getting arrested with you know, the chaos, now this new owner,
- 48:53Speaker 6: I'm kind of glad I'm off that beat and every
- 48:55Speaker 6: one's while I chase, I change Jim Freeman about what
- 48:57Speaker 6: he has to do with But no, it's just been
- 48:59Speaker 6: crazy and it and you know, it wouldn't be as
- 49:02Speaker 6: bad if there wasn't this cloud hanging over you know,
- 49:05Speaker 6: the Modus Center, or this idea that could he moved
- 49:08Speaker 6: the team, and he's doing just all these crazy things
- 49:11Speaker 6: where you just it's just it's clear he just does
- 49:14Speaker 6: not care about, you know, the connection that the franchise
- 49:19Speaker 6: has to the fans, and that to me resonated more
- 49:23Speaker 6: than ever when he started ripping away the very conduits
- 49:27Speaker 6: between the franchise and the fans. You know, you lay off.
- 49:29Speaker 6: Casey Holdall has been running writing for the website for
- 49:31Speaker 6: eighteen years now, you're getting rid of the entire broadcast
- 49:34Speaker 6: team so far, except for I think Brooke Olsendan will
- 49:37Speaker 6: be safe. I don't know what's wrong with Lamar Heard,
- 49:39Speaker 6: but uh, it's just it's just wild. And I've talked
- 49:43Speaker 6: to friends about this and colleagues, and it's just bizarre
- 49:45Speaker 6: to me how it seems like the richer you are,
- 49:47Speaker 6: the less you care about humanity. You know. It's like
- 49:51Speaker 6: he's just some of the people he laid off even
- 49:53Speaker 6: before this round had been there for it. Just they
- 49:57Speaker 6: lived and breathed the Blazers like that was their lot,
- 50:00Speaker 6: if they were so committed and loyal to the functionality
- 50:02Speaker 6: of that franchise. And he just comes in and looks
- 50:05Speaker 6: at a payroll sheet and just starts lopping off names
- 50:08Speaker 6: without a care in the world. It's just really a
- 50:11Speaker 6: negative thing to do, especially in this city where I
- 50:13Speaker 6: think people are more maybe you know, sense goods to
- 50:16Speaker 6: that type of thing than other places.
- 50:19Speaker 2: I brought up on Twitter X that this is right
- 50:23Speaker 2: out of the Clay Bennett Oklahoma City playbook that happened
- 50:26Speaker 2: here in Seattle, that we're all still having nightmares about
- 50:28Speaker 2: to gut the Sonics out of here, and you say, well,
- 50:31Speaker 2: wait a minute, there's not exactly the same because of
- 50:34Speaker 2: the arena situation in Portland being different than Seattle. Can
- 50:37Speaker 2: you explain that?
- 50:40Speaker 6: Okay, so well, they wanted a completely new arena, right,
- 50:47Speaker 6: almost zero public and it was only zero public almost
- 50:51Speaker 6: zero public support.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Correct, correct? They got Yeah, David Stern and Bena got
- 50:56Speaker 2: chased out of Olympia with the legislators said no way, yeah, yeah.
- 51:00Speaker 6: Whereas here it's a remodel one and most of the
- 51:05Speaker 6: money is in place, like the device tag six hundred million,
- 51:10Speaker 6: and you got the Staten County you have already pushed
- 51:12Speaker 6: in four hundred plus, and so the city which owns
- 51:14Speaker 6: the arena is on the hook for one hundred and twenty.
- 51:17Speaker 6: So it's like it's much closer to the finish line
- 51:22Speaker 6: of the team not leaving than it was ever in Seattle.
- 51:25Speaker 6: So that's why I feel like it's it's definitely different.
- 51:29Speaker 6: That said, a lot of people are fearful that Dundon
- 51:34Speaker 6: is running the same playbook. I would love the mine
- 51:37Speaker 6: since they put the team up for sale, and I'm
- 51:39Speaker 6: still of the mind that the Blazers are not going anywhere.
- 51:41Speaker 6: I do not I just don't. There's too many other things,
- 51:44Speaker 6: like one, where are they going to go? The NBA
- 51:46Speaker 6: is really going to allow it. It's a city, and
- 51:48Speaker 6: I think the city. I think the city impartial, well partially,
- 51:51Speaker 6: I think they're posturing. Some of the city councils I
- 51:55Speaker 6: think are just posturing. They're playing that game where you're
- 51:57Speaker 6: gonna stick it to the billionaire, right, they don't them
- 52:00Speaker 6: rally and they had signs no bailout for billionaires, but
- 52:03Speaker 6: just having a bailout for a billionaires, what are you
- 52:05Speaker 6: talking about. The city owns the arena. You're gonna have
- 52:08Speaker 6: to do something with it anyway. It's thirty years old.
- 52:12Speaker 6: It's going to cost you one hundred and twenty million
- 52:14Speaker 6: dollars in the state and the county are going to
- 52:15Speaker 6: pay the rest to make it a you know, a
- 52:19Speaker 6: top end facility. And you're crying about that. So I
- 52:22Speaker 6: think eventually the city council is going to get it
- 52:24Speaker 6: together and they're going to approve the money. I just
- 52:26Speaker 6: think a lot of this is just theater and it'll
- 52:29Speaker 6: all work out.
- 52:30Speaker 2: What exactly I know, Well, you covered the Blazers who
- 52:33Speaker 2: lived there. I think you know a little bit. What
- 52:35Speaker 2: do they need to do they need to add more suites,
- 52:37Speaker 2: some courtside suites. What what are the revenue generators that
- 52:42Speaker 2: the Rose Garden slash Modi Center lacks that the money's
- 52:44Speaker 2: going to get spent on.
- 52:46Speaker 6: Yeah, all the above, you know. I I uh so,
- 52:50Speaker 6: before I started covering the Blazers, I'd only been to,
- 52:53Speaker 6: you know, a couple of other NBA arenas. I never
- 52:56Speaker 6: really thought about the age of the motors, and I
- 53:01Speaker 6: think for its age, it actually does hold up well.
- 53:05Speaker 6: It's not dilapidated like I think it speaks to how
- 53:09Speaker 6: well it was put together thirty years ago, because I
- 53:11Speaker 6: think you look at it like this is kind of
- 53:13Speaker 6: ahead of its time thirty years ago. But after covering
- 53:16Speaker 6: the Blazers, now we didn't travel a ton because they
- 53:19Speaker 6: were so bad. I had the privilege of covering the
- 53:21Speaker 6: worst four year stretch for the Blazers since their very
- 53:24Speaker 6: first years of existence and saw some of the most
- 53:29Speaker 6: amazingly blatant tanking in the history of tanking. Tanking were
- 53:33Speaker 6: like guys who are supposedly wrapped in damages and damn
- 53:36Speaker 6: near dance, they can't play. I see hanging out in
- 53:38Speaker 6: the locker room, chilling like nothing's wrong with them, because
- 53:40Speaker 6: nothing's wrong with them. That's how bad it was, right.
- 53:42Speaker 6: But anyway, I did travel enough to go to about
- 53:46Speaker 6: eighteen or nineteen other arenas, and when you do that
- 53:49Speaker 6: and you look around, you're like, ah, I get it now,
- 53:52Speaker 6: you know, I get it now. The modus it's just old.
- 53:57Speaker 6: The seats are old, the conrses aren't widening out. There's
- 54:01Speaker 6: complaints about how that the different kitchen areas are built.
- 54:05Speaker 6: They're not uh you know, they're not worker friendly, getting
- 54:09Speaker 6: the parking, uh, getting trucks in and out, those kind
- 54:12Speaker 6: of things. And then the suite the suites aren't great
- 54:15Speaker 6: like and then they need to do I think even
- 54:18Speaker 6: more important than the arena is around the arena, it
- 54:22Speaker 6: is completely dead. There's nothing to do. It is you
- 54:25Speaker 6: go to the game and you leave. Whereas you go
- 54:27Speaker 6: to other cities it's just lit up. There's restaurants, there's bars,
- 54:32Speaker 6: there's activity, it's just lively. You don't get that at
- 54:35Speaker 6: all because the Rose Quarter is an absolute zero. So
- 54:38Speaker 6: there's a lot that needs to be done to spruce
- 54:40Speaker 6: that area up. And I think it would be you know,
- 54:42Speaker 6: economically sound for the city to participate in doing that
- 54:44Speaker 6: because I think they'll get some benefits from it.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Don Dundon will probably want to cut off any new
- 54:49Speaker 2: bars or restaurants.
- 54:50Speaker 6: Right.
- 54:52Speaker 5: Right.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Aaron fetchs from New Yorgonian joining us on the Beacon
- 54:57Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotland Front Portland about all the crazy going on
- 55:00Speaker 2: with the new ownership and the Blazers. You covered the Seahawks.
- 55:03Speaker 2: That's how we got to know each other. You covered
- 55:05Speaker 2: him under the Paul Allen regime and the transition to
- 55:07Speaker 2: Jody Allen following Paul Allen's death. If you're from a
- 55:11Speaker 2: Seahawks perspective, now that you're in Portland and see how
- 55:13Speaker 2: Tom Dundon's running the Blazers, would you be concerned that
- 55:17Speaker 2: the Allen estate and Jody Allen and Burke Cole picked
- 55:21Speaker 2: Tom Dundon and now have picked Seahawks owners. Do you
- 55:23Speaker 2: think there's any correlation there?
- 55:27Speaker 7: Uh?
- 55:30Speaker 6: Yeah, that's an interesting question. I mean Joey her responsibility
- 55:34Speaker 6: based on the estate was to you know, maximize the
- 55:37Speaker 6: value of both franchises. And I had a commerce I
- 55:40Speaker 6: had a conversation I can't remember his name, was like
- 55:42Speaker 6: three or four years ago about you know, what was
- 55:46Speaker 6: going on with the Blazers and the sale because everyone
- 55:48Speaker 6: was freaking out. But she's just selling anyway, just sell it.
- 55:51Speaker 6: And the person said to me, like, look, the two
- 55:53Speaker 6: assets you're going to hold on to for the longest
- 55:56Speaker 6: because you don't have to sell everything right away, right
- 55:58Speaker 6: are the Seahawks and the because they're going to appreciate.
- 56:01Speaker 6: And the light bulb went off. I was like, ah, okay,
- 56:04Speaker 6: if that makes complete sense. So when Phil Knight came
- 56:06Speaker 6: in with the offer, this was four years ago. He
- 56:09Speaker 6: came in with two point two billion, and everyone's like,
- 56:12Speaker 6: oh man, he should they they should take it. They
- 56:14Speaker 6: should take it because he'll he'll build it up and
- 56:16Speaker 6: he'll keep it in the organ no matter what, and
- 56:17Speaker 6: he'll make it amazing, right like he does for the
- 56:19Speaker 6: Eveniversity of Oregon. But Tody Allen was like, nah, I'm
- 56:24Speaker 6: good because she knew that was a low ball. Less
- 56:26Speaker 6: than a year later, the Suns go for almost four billion.
- 56:28Speaker 6: Now sounds are more valuable. Still that was almost double
- 56:31Speaker 6: and now she's just got four point three for them, right,
- 56:34Speaker 6: So she was proven correct and holding on the same
- 56:36Speaker 6: thing with with with the Seahawks. So she that was
- 56:38Speaker 6: her responsibility that said, I don't they claim that when
- 56:42Speaker 6: they met with Dundant, and they you know that Dundon
- 56:45Speaker 6: made it clear that it was not his goal to
- 56:47Speaker 6: move the team, and he's never said I'm gonna move
- 56:50Speaker 6: the team, So it's like, do you believe that or
- 56:53Speaker 6: do you believe that his actions would indicate he might?
- 56:56Speaker 6: But then you have to have a place to move,
- 56:57Speaker 6: And then what are really of the financial implications of
- 56:59Speaker 6: doing that? Any are the fact that I still believe
- 57:02Speaker 6: the city is gonna come through, So everything's gonna work
- 57:04Speaker 6: out because a lot of the things that were agreed
- 57:07Speaker 6: upon financially were done before Dundon took over, Like the
- 57:11Speaker 6: Blazers under Allen were already talking to the City of Portland,
- 57:14Speaker 6: accounting in the state about remodeling Mota. In fact, Portland,
- 57:19Speaker 6: the Blazers had already started the process by redoing the scoreboards,
- 57:23Speaker 6: so the inside you know that that wrent and over
- 57:25Speaker 6: the middle, and then the big ones, the big stab boards,
- 57:27Speaker 6: those were redone already, So that process was already in
- 57:30Speaker 6: place and rolling along. So I kind of believe that
- 57:34Speaker 6: some of this stuff is just political posturing from both
- 57:37Speaker 6: sides and negotiations and all that's kind of nonsense. And
- 57:40Speaker 6: at the end of the day, it's gonna it's gonna all.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Work out, Aaron Fenders joining a season.
- 57:45Speaker 6: I'm sorry long winded answer, but I think I got
- 57:47Speaker 6: to your point eventually.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Well, that's why we have you on no problem. And
- 57:50Speaker 2: then I got to ask you about the Ducks, and
- 57:52Speaker 2: I got to ask you about covering major college sports
- 57:56Speaker 2: in the Big Ten from the West Coast and and
- 57:59Speaker 2: I and transfer portal and the Ducks are right in
- 58:01Speaker 2: the middle of high bidding on all this stuff. What
- 58:04Speaker 2: is it like from your I teach at the University
- 58:07Speaker 2: of Washington Nucllegiate Athletic Leadership program. I see it from
- 58:10Speaker 2: the athletic department hiring perspective of how it's changed college sports,
- 58:15Speaker 2: but just from a perspective of roster building, of coaching,
- 58:20Speaker 2: what's Dan Lanning doing, what is Altman doing? What is
- 58:23Speaker 2: different about college sports from where you see it? The pitfalls?
- 58:29Speaker 2: Just what the hell is going on in college sports?
- 58:31Speaker 2: Is really what I'm trying to say. Because Organ's right
- 58:33Speaker 2: in the middle of it, being in Eugene, Organ in
- 58:35Speaker 2: the Big Ten.
- 58:38Speaker 6: Yeah, this is totally a get off my lawn moment
- 58:41Speaker 6: for me. I can't stand it. And I'm not saying
- 58:46Speaker 6: I can't stand the fact that guys are getting paid.
- 58:48Speaker 6: I think it's great. Clear the money's available, right, so yeah,
- 58:54Speaker 6: they should get paid. It's just that the system, in
- 58:56Speaker 6: the way it's structure, it's just lies against my sensibilities
- 59:03Speaker 6: in terms of competition and what it means. So, like
- 59:06Speaker 6: we covered the Seahawks together, right, So in the NFL,
- 59:08Speaker 6: one of the greatest things ever in the history of sports,
- 59:10Speaker 6: I think was how Pete Roselle back in the day,
- 59:14Speaker 6: set forth a system that would ensure competitive balance, right
- 59:21Speaker 6: with the draft being weighted, and then the later the
- 59:23Speaker 6: cap came. So that's why green Bay can compete with Dallas. Otherwise,
- 59:27Speaker 6: you know, in the college football world, green Bay has
- 59:30Speaker 6: no chance to compete with Dallas because Jerry Jones would
- 59:33Speaker 6: have a five billion dollars payroll and buy up every player.
- 59:38Speaker 6: And so what's happening now, Like I give Oregon credit
- 59:41Speaker 6: and Landing some credit, but I've had this debate with
- 59:44Speaker 6: people when people like, oh, Landing is so amazing, It's
- 59:46Speaker 6: such an amazing recruiter. I'm like, I'm not saying it's
- 59:48Speaker 6: not a good recruiter, but dude, it's easy to recruit
- 59:50Speaker 6: when I'm sitting when I'm plopping four hundred grand in
- 59:53Speaker 6: your bank account. Right, And Oregon is in a position
- 59:56Speaker 6: now where not only can it compete with for all
- 59:59Speaker 6: the big time four and five star kids out of
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: high school, but they can just raid other people's rosters, right,
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: you know. And that so like Dylan finnerm and he
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: just got drafted by my bears. I was very happy
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: about that. I was helping them get him. He was
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: an All conference safety at Purdue in the Big Ten Conference.
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: The Ducks are like, we need a safety. I kind
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: of like that guy, and so they offer him a
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: botload of money. Ford can't match that, and he just
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: mows all over to a conference rival. And so that
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: just creates a weird competitive balance where it's just I
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: can't respect it. Right. So I'm Oregon's gonna be good
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: and they're going to continue to be good. But it's
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: just a to me. It's far more impressive the Ballotti era,
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: you know, Chip Kelly, Mark Helfritz, where they recruited high
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: school kids like Marcus Mariota and Lemichael James's center and
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: developed them into winning, into going to national championship games
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: as opposed to just going out and just buying all
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: the players that you can possibly buy. So it drives
- 1:00:56Speaker 6: me nuts. It's it's difficult for me. I mean, it's
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: not difficult to cover. That's part of my job, but
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: I don't like it and it's not it's not what
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: I look forward to dealing with. Let's put that way.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Since you covered the Ducks, let me ask you on
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: the spot question Brandon Johnson. I know he was Duke
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: for three years and then only one season in Eugene
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: with the Ducks, but what can you tell Seahawk fans
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: about the new cornerback they just signed This this week.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: I've been on vacationion they signed the cornerback.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: They signed Brennan Johnson Off. Basically, it was the Eagles
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: practice squad last year and the rookie year. He played
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: three years for the Eagles. He played for Oregon for
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: one season after starting his career at Duke. I didn't
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: cover him.
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: What year was that?
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: And then two years ago?
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: I think, yeah, this is my first year back. What
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: you're talking about?
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Never mind, speaking of green Bay, my producer's last co host,
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Jesson McIntyre, has a question for you about Green Bay.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: Well, it doesn't necessarily have to do with Green Bay,
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: but having sideline reported for fourteen seasons in a row,
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: I have experience and some bad trips, and I heard
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: that you guys quite a doozy together in Green Bay.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Demand, which is why we're bringing it up Bay.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: And also to be fair, he didn't ask the questions.
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: Wow, bamboozled. Okay, what's your question?
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: How was it?
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Tell us about what happened in.
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: The snow in Green Bay? Man played the playoff game twice?
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: We have to, that's right. So for the most time,
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: I'm just set in a context for those that don't know.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Most times, you can't fly. Now it's changed, you can't
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: fly jets in the Green Bay, but for the longest
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: time you can't even fly jets in the Green Bay.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: And nobody really flies into Green Bay. It's usually Chicago, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Appleton.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I fly to Chicago and just take the NonStop and
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: then drive the three hours to Green Bay. But that
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: drive can be fun in January, and that's the context
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: for when Aaron Fenters and I drove from I believe
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: it was Chicago or maybe up in Milwaukee, and we
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: drove up from Milwaukee. Yeah, two playoff games in snowstorm,
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: not from Ohio. I could drive in the snow. Aaron
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: didn't really believe that.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: Oh so were you white knuckling?
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: He was crying. I needed to give him a pass away.
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: Crying like a little baby. We were gonna die. No,
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: we were driving. When we were driving back that night,
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: first I had to walk through the parking lot. It
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: was like three feet of snow.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: That was the other thing. We went to a dinner
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: across the parking lot of the steakhouse with and killing
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: a bunch of other people I think he was and
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: killing a bunch of other people. I can't remember who
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: was all there from out of time. And he wanted
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: me to drive him from the press box three hundred
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: yards to the steakhouse.
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: Okay, okay, but listen, listen. I didn't plan accordingly, and
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: I was wearing like dress sheet. I didn't want to
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: walk in the snow, my feet all cold and catch
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: frost by. So yeah, I wanted him to come git
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: and he made fun of me. But the biggest thing
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: was driving home that night. We're driving home home and
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: Greg drives like there's no care in the world, and
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: I'm freaking out, and we see all these cars on
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: the side of the road. I know, I saw some
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: people eating some people that survived that.
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: I know I saw that you were in a fever dream.
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: I think I saw it was like the movie there
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: was a movie alive. Yeah, that too. So anyway, we
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: made it back. But then the second time, if you remember,
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: we're leaving Lambeau the second what it was that that
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: was just a couple of years ago. Uh no, Man,
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: oh my.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: God, that's WoT. I was nineteen right long ago? Dan,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: do you remember.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: So we got behind a plow.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we were behind.
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: The plow and I was just like, thank God because
- 1:04:40Speaker 6: the plow is clearing away. And then all I kept
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: singing the mister Plower song from the Simpsons. And then
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: all of a sudden, the plow. All of a sudden,
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: the plow made a left turn, and I'm like, where's
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: the plow going? And war we're following it. Greg, So
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: we got to go this like, oh no, we got
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: to go with a plow.
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: Go.
- 1:04:55Speaker 6: It's like, that's not where we're going to milwauk Ye
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: to the walk. I go, No, I don't care. Follow
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: the plow. Follow the plow.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: Oh well, I mean, and exactly that's the end of
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: the story. I have a similar experience, but a little
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: bit different. When Matt Chasenow and I were trying to
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: get out of El Paso after the twenty fifteen Sun Bowl,
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: all of the flights got canceled. The team plane barely
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: took off, and we were not on the team plane.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: We were flying commercial and we got the last everything's canceled.
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: After that team plane flew off, everything was canceled, And
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: so we're in El Paso, Texas and chas and now
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: is a.
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: Road Warrior goes, okay, well.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: We're just gonna rent a car. I got us three
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: thirty flights out of Phoenix tomorrow. I'm like, okay, so
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: we're just gonna go rent a car. We got the
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: last rental car in the airport. There's tornadoes all around
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: Texas during a blizzard, and we drove ten hours through
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: the night, and uh, I was just watching a weather
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: map and then we see jack knife tractor trailers all
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: over the place and they were closing the roads behind us,
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: and if we wanted to pull over, we physically couldn't.
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: So we're like in a Chevy Spark. Our weight is
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: holding us on the ground, just being in the car
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: and we made it yep, six point thirty in the morning.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: The next day we made it to Phoenix, slept for
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: six hours, and got on a plane from Phoenix to Seattle.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: It was quite the intense experience, so I thought you
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: would know you're not alone being scared of snow.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: And I have to give Greg credit, and my family
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: thanks him for bringing me home.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: A lot made there. For a minute, I couldn't let
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: you go without bringing that up. But anyway, no, thanks
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: for telling us that there's people in the texting on
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: why are we having a duckt reporter on about on
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: the home of the Huskies. And I know it's sacrilege,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: but it's a perspective from being a Blazers beat writer
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: former Seahawks beat writer. It's good to talk to you, man.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: We'll have you back on soon. When's your first where's
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: your first trip in Oregon? Where are you headed?
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: I'm actually hit at the Chicago next week for Big
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: ten uh and the Cubs are not in town, which
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: I'm very pissed off about since I'm a Cubs Bears,
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: Wolfs guy. I cannot believe that didn't work out. But
- 1:07:17Speaker 6: he did at least have me on when the Ducks
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: played the Husky.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Okay, we'll do that, don't you.
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: Don't your Husky fans want to hear the Ducks reporters
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: take I'm not sure.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: I'm sure they'll be clamoring. You heard it here first. Aaron,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: thanks man, it's good to talk to you again. I'll
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: catch up soon. Yeah, thanks for doing this. Aaron Fentris
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: from the Orgonian, New Portland. He was, he's great. Yeah,
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: he was crying. I kept saying let's stop for a
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: pacifier because he would not shut up. Well, it's three
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: and a half hours of whaling in the back seat if.
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: You're not used to it, he said in the back seat.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: Yeah wow, oh you think he said in the front
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: of the way up in the back on the way back.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Once the snow uber driver, I was, I just don't
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: mind driving in the snow. Once the plow turned off,
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: I just went like seventy five miles an hour, and
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: the across there was nothing. There was just white. We
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: could have been driving across the field. You couldn't see
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: the road. Oh yeah, it was flat. It's in mid
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: central southern Wisconsin.
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: I remember that I was in the desert, which apparently
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: gets snow sun Ball.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: That's a that's a great trips man. The sun Bowl
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: up next. I don't know if we have any talkbacks.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: We'll read back. Oh good, we'll play back talkbacks. We'll
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: read back your text on the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Ian Farness is lurking outside the office or the studio
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: window here. We'll talk to him on what his show's
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: coming up on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: The issue I see with the Mariners team is the
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: lack of urgency. I don't know where this comes from,
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: but when you watch the TV broadcast, you see the
- 1:08:58Speaker 8: players all laughing and smiling as if nothing's going on.
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: The Seattle Mariners are a bunch of pretenders, and the
- 1:09:06Speaker 8: rest of the league knows it. It's time to get
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: rid of Dan Wilson and show Jerry Depoe to the door.
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: I'm done with this team.
- 1:09:14Speaker 7: Hey, they're Jessemin do Koogs and Greg. It is your
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: brother from another Ohio mother, If the last two days
- 1:09:23Speaker 7: of Midwestern heat and somewhat Midwestern humidity didn't remind you
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: why we live here. Thankfully, the Sonics aren't back, so
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: the heat can stay in the east. Now, the Mariners
- 1:09:38Speaker 7: are the mediocrity of major League baseball, and until they
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: start playing like major leaguers, all stay clinically depressed.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: Well that was uplifting.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: Well, it's two different people that kind of feel the
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: same way about the team.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Right now. In the last dozen minutes or so, Adam
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: Jude of the Seattle Times Shannon Dreer, Mariner's reporter, are
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: awording that the Mariners are firing assistant hitting coach Bobby Mangalanis.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: The number three guy, actually ed Pepperella, the Mariners hitting coordinator,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: will join the major league staff for the remainder of
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: the season. The number three guy, not Kevin Sitzer, not
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Dan Wilson. Not Is that the problem?
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: I don't know, Aaron, be honest.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: I don't know. Mariners have fired their assistant hitting coach.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: I don't know what the problem is.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: And also, when it comes to firings, you could point
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: at what we see as consumers of the sport, but
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: there could be other reasons as well.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: We don't know.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Magalanis has worked alongside hitting coach Kevin Sitzer since twenty
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: twenty one in Atlanta. Adam June notes this is their
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: second year together in Seattle. Mariners are last in batting
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: average and slugging percentage. We don't need to tell you
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: what they are in runners scoring position. The assistant hitting
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: coach is the fall guy so far for the Mariners offense.
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: But yeah, I go back into that we don't know
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: the reasons because I don't think this is going to
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: really boost the Mariner fan base with Okay, they did something,
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: so if it was for some sort of public hey,
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: look we're making moves. I don't think that's the biggest
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: move that you can make.
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: And I'm not calling for any other firings.
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: I just don't think that it was necessarily done with
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: the public in mind.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: The assistant hitting coach and two five three, I'm this
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: biggest Cole young fan out there, but faking a tag
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: is bush league, not a high Q. Veteran middlandfielders are
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: tied at a young age to never do this. That's not
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: entirely true. It's safe, and it's unsafe and disrespectful. I
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: think it's ball. I think all it saves a base,
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: and in yesterday's case, if Bizarroo hadn't given up a
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: home run, it would have saved him a run. The
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: tying run. It kept a runner at second base with
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: fewer than two outs. That's ball.
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: I mean, it's a chess game sometimes and it's not always,
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: and actually in baseball it rarely is. But I remember
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: Dee Gordon when he was grounding, you know, caught a
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: ground or it was a line drive, and he dropped
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: it because then he could make the double play.
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: He got flagged for it, like it was ruled.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: He was supposed to be right, that's illegal by rules.
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: By rules, right, so but he still tried to, you know,
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: get that done. And I didn't have any problems with it.
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: I didn't consider it bush League three.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Six so says it's Jerry Depoto's rules and the rest
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: of baseball's rules. Baseball has an analytics problem. It's not
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: just us. Yeah, that we've talked about any I agree
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: with that four two five. About the Sonics, Yes, bring
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: back Kevin and collaboro that is and Marcus Johnson to
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: reprise one of their all time great calls following a
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: terrific play by Debtlo shrimp play that funky music white play. Yes,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: they used to say that, Oh I forgot about It's
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: exactly right.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: It's just like the most wonderful person.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: He really is. Yeah, and he's still quite active in
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: the basketball scene here he is. But yeah, Marcus Johnson
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: alongside Kevin Collaboro and those broadcasts in the mid nineties
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: when they went to the finals against the bull they
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: that was fantastic. They had to have the best local
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: broadcasters in the NBA and sports almost that was get
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: on the magic carpet and ride baby.
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: Gosh the best.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: Bring Kevin Collaboro back, make him the new Sonics, the
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: returning Sonics announcer again. How fabulous that would be. It's
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: set up that way now that the Blazers have given
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: him a quote subprime offer. He said it wasn't worth
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: his time. He told Jason Quick Kevin Claboro did, remember,
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: Kevin Claber will be on this station tomorrow at nine
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: am with Chuck Pollin Ashley Ryan in the morning show.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: Listen to that. It'll be worth definitely worth listening to.
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: Oh, they are going to dive deep into that one.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, sorry, go ahead, go ahead. I was just
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: going to say, I.
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: Wonder how much fury there will be about the lack
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: of a bigger move when it comes to the job
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: structure with the Mariners, or if people just don't care.
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: That that guy got fired.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: We don't really know the intricacies of what his job
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: was es so there's.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: A reason they fired, but it comes off as the perception,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: of course, comes off as that you're firing a underling,
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: an assistant for a problem that goes well above him.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: But yeah, we don't know his actual role telling them
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: the reason is he telling them to try to hit
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: it to Lynnwood into renting with runners at scoring position
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: instead of just putting the ball in play. I don't
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: know that it's fault. At some point, it's up to
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: the guys in the batter's box when there's a runner
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: at second base in two out, to actually get the
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: job done.
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: But yeah, maybe just his philosophy didn't align with what
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: they want.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: It's the old rearranging the deck chairs on the deck
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: of the Titanic.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Right, But it's not. It's identic right now, that's the point.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Yes, And I know no one wants to hear it.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: But they're a half game out of first place right
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: on July the twenty third. I know it doesn't feel
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: like that. It doesn't seem like that. They went three
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: and three against the Giants and the Reds to bottom
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: rung teams. Yes, yes, and yes, but the division ain't
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: going anywhere. And we've said it since the beginning of
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: the season on this show. There are a four or
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: five six game winning streak from being in first place comfortably.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: They just aren't getting in the four or five or
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: six game going. But yes, all of that is still
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: in play, which speaks to to Poto's comments in the
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: local media last week that we just need our best
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: acquisitions we can make are having the guys we already
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: have have the seasons they're capable of having. I looked
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: up yesterday and I just had to do a triple
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: take that Cal Rawley on the scoreboard. His average is
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: one sixty four in late July. That's crazy. Counting cold Emerson,
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: the Mariners had two guys in their lineup yesterday with
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: batting averages under two hundred.
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Cold Emerson, we mentioned, is three for his last thirty
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: two now while batting ninth.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: At least I keep him in that ninth spot.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: Yeah. We'll see what happens when Brenda Nanoman comes back
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: from his rehab stint.
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: Yeah, it'll be interesting what that infield will look like
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: because we just don't.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Know two, five three says why are we having a
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Ducks reporter on the quote home of the Huskies. I
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: mentioned that, yes, that's sacrilege in some ways, but he
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Aaron had a really wide perspective of having been a
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: former Seattle beat writer. He used to drive from Portland
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: to Seattle a couple times a week, once or twice
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: during this week for practices and press conferences and locker
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: room and then for games, and then he would travel
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: to road games. And that's how we got to know
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: each other and traveling together and became really good friends
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: doing that. And he has also for five seasons been
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: a traveling beat writer for the paper of Record in
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: Portland for the Blazers, so he knows all about that environment.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: The people he talked about they fired. I've been with
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: the team since Bill Walton and Jack Ramsey were Blazers.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: I mean, the thing that's different about the Blazers and
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: almost every other major sports franchise in this country is
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: it's Portland's only team. It is the thing in Portland,
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: the Blazers.
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: I've gone down for games before.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: We all have, yes, I have. It's fat. I don't
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: think there's anything wrong with that arena. But I know
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: how modern economics of pro sports, and they've been maximizing
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: revenues and all that, keeping up with the Joneses. I
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: get it, and that's why they want to modernize it.
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: But but the area is great. There's plenty of hotels around.
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: I just feel like it's a good spot for hoops.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and to Aaron's point, the Blazers, I'm sure want
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: to have revenue generating bars and restaurants right outside the
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: arena that they can own and have a cut of
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: the profits of. That's the trend in sports. The Patriots
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: did it in Foxborough, middle of nowhere. Foxborough is now
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Patriots Center or whatever they call that place, Patriots Place,
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: with a bunch of restaurants and bars and shopping right
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: attached to the stadium. I've been to that for Army
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: Navy and for Seahawks games, and it is a mall
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: basically to attached to the stadium, and Robert Craft and
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: the Patriots keep all of that revenue. That's some of
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: what people are fearing about what the new owners of
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: the Seahawks might want a new stadium for is they
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: need a footprint to have all that stuff attached to it.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: But so far, no indication of them doing that anyway.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: That's why we had Aaron Fentress on bus. He's one
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: of my good friends. And as you heard him say,
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: why haven't I had him on the show before.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: I've done some sideline work with him. Yeah, that's true,
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: he's great.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: I see the rest of the media is picking up
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: on the Washington State switching sidelines story now a couple
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: of days ago.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: People care about it.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: That's good.
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: I get more shade during the Honday or shade for
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: Jessamine and more students section for the opponents.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Another coup is about to join us on the home
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: of the Husky's The Infernesse Maple Valley. Tell us what's
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: on the show next on ninety three point three kJ RPM.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Welcome back Greg val, Jessamin McIntyre now Ian Furness, the Mayor,
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: and Maple Valley with his mayor in the pale al

- 1:21:08Speaker 1: the game the in the what was it January twenty twenty,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: We did a live We were doing live news all

- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I've I was in Minnesota like you for the game
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: seven below. It was worse that day that Saturday in
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Green Bay and then we had to do we had
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: do live shots for Portland. Oh yeah, And so we're
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: in and out of the car, in and out of
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: the car, and it was so cold, and I remember
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: thinking like where is everybody?
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and you were at Minneapolis. You guys, guys all
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: came in, got rerouted. We're supposed to going to Chicago,
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: and we got rerouted to Minneapolis because of the storm.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: And then we drove from Minneapolis five hours to Green
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Bay and got there about an hour before kickoff. Yes, right,
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: I remember that was wild. That is Gar was in
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: there with me, Condoda, Brady Henderson, Yeah, yeah. Matt cockin

- 1:22:04Speaker 2: a little baby, and of course he was, of course
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: he was. That's that's that's Ventriss in a nutshell.
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: Though.
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: We brought that up. So you're a big fan of
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: the Mariner's latest move to try to solve their problems.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: I didn't know, like, like the third string hitting coach
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: is your is your scapegoat?
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: What fans wanted to move, they made him move is
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: just not what you do. Okay, it's just not what.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: Isn't there for the hitting part of this, isn't it?
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Smonger came in to fix something on the rundown as
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: a major league at the major league if you.
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: Watch on YouTube walked By, that's why. Yes, at the
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: major league level, if there's a runner at second and
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: two out, does that have anything to do with the
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: hitting coach. No, hitting with runners and scoring position. It's
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: the guy in the box. Well, here's the thing.

- 1:22:57Speaker 1: head off of the snake. Said, listen, you can't fire Edgar.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: He's got a canteen in the ballpark among other two
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: of them?
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: Is there two of them?
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: Now?
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: Well, there's one above there's a cantina below, but he
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: has a.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: Statue and a staff. Okay, you can't in a street.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Is that the same reason you can't fire Dan Wilson.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Well, he didn't have any of those things. He didn't
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: have a street cantina. But Kevin Sitzer.
