- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello team, welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:24I'm so happy you're here. Last Friday my wife taught her
- 0:28last group fitness class. She's been in Group fitness for
- 0:3214 years in the city of Portland.
- 0:34She's taught at various studios, different modalities of fitness,
- 0:39but she taught her last class at Berry's to a packed room with as
- 0:45much energy as she taught 1314 years ago.
- 0:49It was such an honor to be in the room.
- 0:51The energy was insane. People are expressing so much
- 0:55gratitude for her and to see her get choked up at the end and
- 0:59just say thank you and express what it meant to her for the
- 1:02last 14 years. To have people giving energy to
- 1:05her. Not just her giving energy to
- 1:08people but and people giving energy to her.
- 1:11It was so moving and everybody felt it.
- 1:14It was really awesome experience and the endorphins were high
- 1:17afterwards. It was just amazing.
- 1:19It was lovely. And since then, I've been
- 1:22thinking about ripple effects, the ripple effects of impact
- 1:26that you have on people when you give your energy and you share
- 1:29your gifts with the world, with the community around you.
- 1:34More than that, I've been thinking about how it's the
- 1:37energy you give that correlates with the impact you have and the
- 1:42ripple effects that you create. It's all about the energy.
- 1:46So this episode is a bit of an ode to instructors out there in
- 1:51the world. I think they're an incredible
- 1:53example of how to have powerful impact, and they embody a lot of
- 1:58the characteristics of being impact ready, something that I
- 2:01want to talk about today. Now, if you've ever been a
- 2:05fitness instructor before, you know this, you know that to be
- 2:09good, you have to put in the energy.
- 2:12Every time you walk into your class, you have a choice about
- 2:16how you're going to show up. You can choose to phone it in to
- 2:19some degree you can, or you can give the best that you have that
- 2:23day. It's a constant decision every
- 2:26single time you walk into that room.
- 2:29You can also make the choice to be in your best energy possible
- 2:34regardless of how other people show up in the room, which
- 2:38again, if you've been an instructor, you know that some
- 2:41days it's pretty hard to bring the energy when other people,
- 2:45other clients in the room aren't bringing it with you.
- 2:48What I've learned over the years is that the instructors out in
- 2:52the world who have the greatest impact are the ones who have
- 2:55continuously poured the most energy into their craft.
- 3:01It's not hard to tell. They pour energy into building
- 3:05skills, into learning, into improving their teaching, and
- 3:09they pour energy into the clients.
- 3:12And it's no wonder, because there's something really special
- 3:16and unique about the relationships that you build
- 3:19with people in those rooms. I don't know if it's the music
- 3:23or the lights or the drama. Maybe.
- 3:27Maybe it's the fact that you're asking people to push themselves
- 3:30out of their comfort zones every single day and they're actually
- 3:34doing it. Maybe it's the winds that people
- 3:38feel like they have in those rooms when they run a little
- 3:40faster or lift a little more or spin their legs to the beat of
- 3:43the music for the first time. Maybe it's the fact that those
- 3:47clients show up in all different states of their life over the
- 3:51years. They show up in good times, hard
- 3:54times, when they're grieving, when they're celebrating.
- 3:58Maybe it's that on any given day, you are acknowledging
- 4:01somebody. Someone's birthday, someone's
- 4:03upcoming wedding, their anniversary, their 500th class.
- 4:08It might be that you're putting a hand on someone's shoulder
- 4:11because you know that they're going through a divorce, and the
- 4:15tears on their face as they're running on the treadmill or
- 4:18spinning on that bike are an indication that they're working
- 4:21through something. Maybe it's because you knew that
- 4:25that client was struggling to get pregnant for three years,
- 4:28and then one day they showed up and told you that they had to
- 4:30modify because they were in their first trimester.
- 4:34They'd finally gotten pregnant, and you get to see them at nine
- 4:37months pregnant and they've come to your class to try to get that
- 4:41baby moving out. It could be all of that.
- 4:45It could just be that all those clients have been a witness to
- 4:49you growing and evolving as an instructor, going through all
- 4:53your good times and all your hard times yourself.
- 4:58They might have seen you get choked up on certain days, or
- 5:01they've celebrated with you when you meet that person that you
- 5:05fall in love with, or you win that bodybuilding competition
- 5:08you've been working towards, or you're just celebrating because
- 5:12you can. It's all of these moments that
- 5:16build and connect. It's the relationships that
- 5:20spread. It's when you get to see clients
- 5:23outside of the room in the real world and you get to cheer them
- 5:26on, or you get to watch friendships develop between
- 5:29clients in certain classes. The instructor gets to be a
- 5:33witness to so many different facets of humanity, and the
- 5:37whole time they're holding the space for that to happen.
- 5:43Not to mention they're curating it with the soundtrack that
- 5:46meets and matches those different moments in people's
- 5:49lives, and they are guiding people to grow in their own
- 5:53right. As I said earlier, this whole
- 5:56scenario around teaching fitness, it's one of the
- 5:59greatest examples of impact I can think of.
- 6:01It embodies so many different aspects of what creates a
- 6:05powerful impact, things that we talked about on this podcast all
- 6:08the time. For example, the idea of ripple
- 6:12effects. When you are great at what you
- 6:16do, you create environments for people to become better
- 6:21themselves, and then those people go out into their
- 6:24communities and start to have an influence there as well.
- 6:28That's how it spreads. Let me pause here for a second.
- 6:34If you're listening and thinking I'm capable of more or this is
- 6:39the level I want to operate at, this is for you.
- 6:42I work privately with a small number of high performing
- 6:45leaders who are ready to elevate how they show up in their
- 6:48business and in their lives. This isn't motivational
- 6:51coaching, it's precision work. We refine your energy,
- 6:54strengthen your ownership, and eliminate inconsistency so your
- 6:58impact becomes undeniable. If you're ready for that level
- 7:02of growth, book a private call through the link in the show
- 7:05notes. We'll see if it's a fit.
- 7:07All right, back to the episode. Instructors demonstrate one of
- 7:16the number one rules of impact, consistency.
- 7:20Consistency is king. Showing up in Group fitness for
- 7:24years, bringing your best, that is the perfect embodiment of
- 7:28consistency. Not only are they doing that,
- 7:30but they do it on good days and on bad days.
- 7:33It's a prime example of how you can show up and do a great job.
- 7:37You can bring your best even when you don't feel your best.
- 7:41We've talked about that before. Another aspect of impact, the
- 7:46idea of how a little effort can go a long way.
- 7:49Maybe you learned somebody's name and you shouted it out in
- 7:51class and it made their day. You celebrate somebody's
- 7:55birthday. You support them through a loss.
- 7:59A little effort goes a long way. They also perfectly illustrate
- 8:04the power of connection. So often when you're an
- 8:07instructor, you see your clients 234 times a week.
- 8:13That's more than you see your own family sometimes.
- 8:17There's a unique special connection there and it
- 8:20motivates, it inspires people, it builds community that allows
- 8:25them to feel better in their daily life and team.
- 8:30If they're really good, they make it look easy.
- 8:34And that's what you call mastery, something we've talked
- 8:36about so many times. It's what we would call
- 8:39unconscious competence in terms of the levels of learning.
- 8:43Those are the instructors that are really fun to take a
- 8:45classroom, those who have developed mastery.
- 8:48They just make it look so damn easy and at the same time, it's
- 8:52incredibly fun. And that brings me to one of the
- 8:56biggest reasons why I think that instructors are such a great
- 9:00example of powerful impact. It's because it's all done
- 9:04through the lens of play and joy.
- 9:07These classes, these group fitness experiences, they're
- 9:10fun. That is why they are successful,
- 9:15because you get to bring people together, get them out of their
- 9:18comfort zones and make it celebratory.
- 9:21You get to put great fun music. You get to play with the lights.
- 9:24You get to be dramatic. We as adults get to step out of
- 9:29our serious comfort zones and have fun even when we're doing
- 9:33something hard. And we all know the power of
- 9:35play and joy. It creates incredible impact.
- 9:40If we zoom out here and we look at the big picture, you can see
- 9:45that none of this would be possible if it weren't for the
- 9:47energy invested. And that's what's really
- 9:50standing out for me this last week as a reflect on my wife's
- 9:54last 14 years of group fitness. As I think about my own
- 9:57experiences teaching, and as I think about the instructors
- 10:01who've had the most impact on me, I realized the common
- 10:04denominator. All of this is the energy given.
- 10:09And it hammers home the point that our impact is a reflection
- 10:14of what we put out into the world.
- 10:17That the energy we cultivate is what allows us to create the
- 10:21ripple effects. It reminds me of why it's so
- 10:23essential to prepare and plan for energy, because without it,
- 10:29we are completely stunted in our ability to do what we want to
- 10:32do. Think about this.
- 10:35The energy a teacher might put into guiding his students.
- 10:39The energy a parent might put into showing up for their kids.
- 10:44The energy a spouse invests in their marriage.
- 10:47The energy a boss or a leader gives to their team or a doctor
- 10:51gives to their patients. A best friend puts into their
- 10:53friendship. A coach invests in their
- 10:56athletes. It all comes down to this.
- 10:59The impact we have correlates with the energy we give.
- 11:06If there's a place in your life where things are floundering or
- 11:10where things aren't flourishing, look at the energy you're giving
- 11:15it. Perhaps that's the reason you're
- 11:17not seeing the impact you want. And the good news is it's an
- 11:21easy fix because it is within us.
- 11:25The solution is to focus more energy.
- 11:30So this one, this episode, this one's for my wife, and it's for
- 11:35all the fitness instructors out there.
- 11:37Whether you've taught for a year or 15 years, the energy you give
- 11:41to your classes, the time and attention that you put into
- 11:45curating your workouts and your playlist, the way you encourage
- 11:49and see all the individuals that filter through those rooms over
- 11:52the years, it matters. It matters so much.
- 11:57I've heard hundreds of stories of why it matters and I'm here
- 12:00to tell you, you are creating ripple effects beyond what you
- 12:04will ever know. So maybe all think like a
- 12:09fitness instructor today and give the energy we can so we can
- 12:13create the impact we want. I'm so glad you're here
- 12:16listening. Thank you for all of your
- 12:18support for this podcast as we approach 200 episodes.
- 12:23And as always, team, thank you for being ready to Impact.
- 12:28Thanks for listening to Impact Ready.
- 12:30I hope today's episode inspired you to own your impact and
- 12:33recognize that you are powerful. By elevating our energy and
- 12:36awareness, we can create exponential change in this life.
