Transcript
- 0:18Hello, welcome back. To the Easy Double Podcast
- 0:20episode 20. Now you'll have to bear with me
- 0:23as I go through the introductions today, because
- 0:25there's one more than there perhaps usually is.
- 0:28So I'm joined, as always by Dean Menzies from thankfully now not
- 0:33too many kilometres away from me as I'm back in Perth.
- 0:36How are you, Dean? Doing well mate.
- 0:38Yeah, back from back to reality. So yeah, normal week of of
- 0:42training for me, not in a camper van so doing well.
- 0:45I'm glad to hear that you you made it through the camper van
- 0:48shenanigans. You didn't get lost on Margaret
- 0:50River. Didn't leave the kids there, so
- 0:52no, it's still in one piece. So it's Sunday afternoon as we
- 0:55record in Perth and we're also joined by Owen, which it's
- 1:00Sunday morning in Ireland. How are you?
- 1:02Great. Yeah, A.
- 1:03Bit tired but no. I had a good week of training as
- 1:06well. A couple of sessions ticked off
- 1:08and yeah, no things going well. Yeah, we're just chatting off
- 1:12air that your social calendar seems to be getting increasingly
- 1:15busy these days since you've got back to Ireland being pulled in
- 1:18all directions. Man, it's crazy.
- 1:20That's why I really sort of like, loved Australia.
- 1:23All I did was like work run, but now I've got like family and
- 1:26friends to deal with. It's terrible to say, but every
- 1:30kind of like a Gaelic match to go to or yeah, there's always
- 1:34something on, but no, no, I can't complain.
- 1:37And lastly, we're joined by a special guest off the back of
- 1:41Gold Coast Marathon this morning, live from Queensland.
- 1:44I don't know whether to say Jake Barcliff or ran to Japan.
- 1:47I feel bad dropping your name but it seems like people go by
- 1:51ran to Japan more so. Yeah, I feel like today on
- 1:53course it was a bit a mix of both.
- 1:56You're good with whatever. I had ran to Japan on my vest so
- 1:59I guess I've bought into it now. There we go.
- 2:03So thanks for joining us today because.
- 2:05You did. Allude to the fact that you
- 2:07might be able to join this episode during the interview and
- 2:09perhaps give us a recap of your race.
- 2:11So we're thankful for your time and I know the lads and the
- 2:14listeners will be excited to hear it from the horse's mouth.
- 2:17That's so good. It's always good fun.
- 2:19You're getting the breaking news.
- 2:20I reckon this will come out before the YouTube video.
- 2:23Even so, this is serious stuff. I should be charging you boys
- 2:26for this premium access. Yeah, how many post race
- 2:31calories do you reckon you've gone through already?
- 2:33Not enough. That's actually why I've got to
- 2:35get get away. I hit 6.
- 2:36I need some heavy refuelling. I think I took too many gels.
- 2:40I was feeling so sick for a good few hours after just about
- 2:45getting that appetite back. All right then I did just want
- 2:48to say before we get going with the running stuff, I know this
- 2:51is non related but just wanted to acknowledge the tragic
- 2:54passion of Liverpool player Diego Jotter and his brother.
- 2:57Earlier in the week, some people may have heard through the news
- 3:01they died in a car crash in Spain.
- 3:03So it's absolutely terrible and like the whole sport and world
- 3:07just came out and kind of paid the tributes and stuff.
- 3:10So I thought it's only fair and I wanted to give it a mention.
- 3:15The sad news righty then. So we'll go straight to Gold
- 3:19Coast, seeing as time is very valuable with Jake.
- 3:23So that was this morning, and we had the half yesterday and the
- 3:27marathon this morning was run one, fittingly, by a Japanese
- 3:33guy in the male side. So Yuki takei takei Jake,
- 3:37perhaps you're better saying this than I.
- 3:40You could pass as native. IN20733 And in fact the whole
- 3:47podium was made-up of Japanese outfit.
- 3:49So it was Oy Otter in second and two O 831 and Ryoma Tikuchi in
- 3:563rd and two O 838. Now, the winner did actually
- 4:00break the course record here by about 7 seconds, I think.
- 4:05And perhaps I'll just go to the women's and won't say too much
- 4:08more. We'll see.
- 4:10Jake's reflections on the race, The win The women's was worn by
- 4:14an Ethiopian lady to get you mayor in two 2927.
- 4:18Caroline Killal from Kenya is second in two 2944 and jeez this
- 4:24is a tough name in 3rd. Almet Shy Zerion in a 2/31/17,
- 4:30also from Ethiopia. So I think as well it's fair to
- 4:35mention that the first Australians home was Reset Woods
- 4:38on the men's side in a 2/17/56, Simone Mckins or McCanns in the
- 4:45women's with a 237 O 5. So I don't know where to start
- 4:51here. Do we go straight for Jake's
- 4:53recap or do we ask did you guys actually watch it on the stream?
- 4:58I watched, I was watching part of the stream this morning
- 5:01because you could say, was it like a couple familiar faces in
- 5:06terms of pacing the women's race?
- 5:08And it looked like it was just the three ladies that were first
- 5:12to third. They were getting paced, weren't
- 5:15they, by Moose? And they looked like they were
- 5:19sitting on a pretty even, like it looked like he was.
- 5:22It looked like it looked a little tough in terms of the
- 5:24weather. I'd be interested to hear what
- 5:26you thought, Jake. And it's probably a little bit
- 5:28different coming from EU coming from Tokyo, being it's currently
- 5:33already, you might be a bit more acclimated, but it looked like
- 5:35it was a little bit muggy. It looked like people were
- 5:37working a little bit hard. But I saw that was sort of
- 5:39cutting between that pack and the Leeds men pack, lead men's
- 5:42pack. But yeah, first observation was
- 5:45sort of those three women were sort of what looked to be clear
- 5:48and like the pace it the paces look to be doing a good job.
- 5:52Did you see some of that as you were going?
- 5:54I got it, yeah. Yeah, I feel like I was because
- 5:57it's sort of the course you do that out and back, but that
- 6:00actually changed it from last year to the.
- 6:03Oh, so you don't see them coming back the other way?
- 6:05We saw parts of it, but it was, I kind of forgotten what it
- 6:09looked like last year, but it was a bit different.
- 6:11So it was sort of, I think last year you came out slightly
- 6:15inland and you come back along the coast wide and they'd almost
- 6:19flipped it. This time there was some we sort
- 6:21of interspersed a bit. But yeah, I was, I was deep in
- 6:26the pain cave from quite early. So I wasn't too focused on on
- 6:29anything else going on around. We're just trying to survive,
- 6:32get to the end. That's did you have sorry go
- 6:35wrong. No, I was just going to say, did
- 6:37you have a specific plan of how you were going to run it and
- 6:39sort of like splits and stuff or?
- 6:42So it's sort of, I reckon I was in about 220 shape coming in
- 6:46like based on sort of sessions I've done it.
- 6:49Like it was definitely probably the worst shape I've been in
- 6:52maybe since moving to Japan just with whole hospital thing, even
- 6:57though I mean, it was only maybe two weeks fully off running.
- 6:59But I think the whole when you're on antibiotics, you're
- 7:02just your body's fighting for survival.
- 7:04So properly knocked me back, like I did a yeah, like an all
- 7:07out 5K basically a few weeks after that around like 19
- 7:11minutes. So I felt like I was properly
- 7:14starting from scratch. And I've had like I've got some
- 7:16big weeks in, but it's still so early.
- 7:19It's almost like this would be the ideal time to kind of start
- 7:22American Block now from this point where as it just came so
- 7:25quick. Gold Coast.
- 7:26That coming in I was like in the back of my head I kind of
- 7:29thought where do I run 215 or blow off and run three hours?
- 7:34It's the same thing. Like it doesn't help.
- 7:36As in, if it's not APB, it's not really helping me move up the
- 7:40rankings or whatever increase. Yeah, to be fair, it doesn't
- 7:43really matter. So I was thinking, oh, maybe I
- 7:45just go for it. But then I felt like I was
- 7:48basically flat out just running like 217 pace at the start.
- 7:51So I pretty quickly realized that I don't think I could have
- 7:54even got the halfway on for APB. So then I kind of settled into,
- 8:00yeah, it was like maybe. So I split halfway.
- 8:03AI think it was bang on 69, feeling OK.
- 8:09At that point I've been solo for about 10K.
- 8:11So it split up really quickly. Basically from the start there
- 8:15was like a fairly big group for like one or two K and then that
- 8:20sort of whittled down. And then my group, there's maybe
- 8:22four of us and in almost every kilometre someone dropped.
- 8:26So then quite quickly I'm like, OK, there's going to be a long
- 8:28solo grind. And then it was just sort of try
- 8:32and dip that sub 220 barrier that sort of what was in my
- 8:35head, like keep it rolling, try and run sort of even split, not
- 8:39absolutely pop because Gold Coast the first time, like when
- 8:41I did it last year, I lost about 3 minutes in the final 5K.
- 8:46Like I was on on for about 214 I think, because I was really it
- 8:50was like Reese, Tommy Dicanto, we're in a whole perfect like
- 8:53squad until, yeah, maybe 35 K and it just like completely
- 8:58disintegrated and it got painful.
- 9:01And that U-turn like at around 35 point sale 36 KS you then
- 9:07often the prevailing wind is into your face.
- 9:09But it looked like on the forecast the weather the wind
- 9:13wasn't as bad. Was it a bit kinder today?
- 9:16Yeah, that was the, I think that was the saving grace.
- 9:18Like, yeah, last year you hit that headwind and it's just, I
- 9:21feel like you're barely moving here.
- 9:23It was, I don't know if it was a cross wind or what, but it never
- 9:26felt windy. So I even though I was solo, it
- 9:29didn't feel like I was battling into the wind.
- 9:31It wasn't too bad, too fair. I've seen on one of the photos
- 9:35you've got like something on on your tricep.
- 9:38Is that like and? That's a blood cloakose monitor,
- 9:41isn't it? It's actually so my dad's come
- 9:44out here on so we're going for a little holiday for like 2 weeks.
- 9:48So he came to like watch the marathon and then we travel.
- 9:50He's diabetic. And we suddenly had a thought
- 9:53yesterday. We're like, oh, let's wrap this
- 9:55on then we can check it through the race, see what my carbs were
- 9:59like to basically see the sugar level to then look back, see,
- 10:03oh, was it under fuel, over fueled, that kind of thing.
- 10:06It's quite interesting looking at it and I think I was bang on
- 10:09sort of stable because I'm, yeah, I feel like I've got more
- 10:12on it with the carbs. If anything, maybe took a bit
- 10:15too much. Like I was pretty high sugar
- 10:17level. I wasn't under fuelling.
- 10:20Yeah, I was, I was powering the the gels down and everything
- 10:24because I think that was the biggest thing last year at Gold
- 10:26Coast. I think I was way under fueled,
- 10:28like just popped at the end because I think you took a
- 10:31couple gels or something and that was it.
- 10:34And it was after that I was like way more aware that yeah, I've
- 10:36got to be pretty on it. So yeah, it's kind of
- 10:39interesting to use that and look back.
- 10:41We wore them. We wore those during COVID.
- 10:44There was a group of us, I think one of just a group of refs
- 10:47athletes, we wore them because they they last for like two or
- 10:49three weeks. And I think you just Bluetooth
- 10:51like you just put your phone basically to the back of it and
- 10:54it sort of syncs the data up. And I think the biggest spikes I
- 10:58remember seeing for myself was like like track sessions.
- 11:01You would see like this huge spike.
- 11:04And then what we did notice is for some athletes, particularly
- 11:06those that were more susceptible to sort of bonking in the back
- 11:09end of the marathon, you would see a drop.
- 11:12So it's good to know that in the back part of your marathon so
- 11:14you're not seeing any sort of it fall away.
- 11:16No, no, it's. Dead Sea with your Did you find
- 11:20it in school or like? Yeah, it was more just a trend
- 11:24like it's like some things where it's good to know that I'm
- 11:28you're not like necessarily someone that's susceptible to
- 11:31sort of like call it like bonking or you know, like some
- 11:35people even when we're doing like say zone 1 long runs,
- 11:38they'd get 2 hours in and you'd see it start to fall and then
- 11:41they would struggle. And I think they were almost, it
- 11:43was almost like they're maybe less fat adapted.
- 11:46Like they were less able to sort of, they weren't as efficient as
- 11:49burning fuel. And so I would imagine for
- 11:52someone like yourself that's puts through so many miles and
- 11:54puts through so much fuel, you would be naturally very good
- 11:59already. And so it's probably just
- 12:01confirming that. And then like you say, you're
- 12:03probably just optimizing your fuel by taking on as much as you
- 12:06can in a race. So it's probably just confirming
- 12:09what you hope to already see. Yeah, and that makes sense.
- 12:13Obviously the build up wasn't ideal and I feel like for a
- 12:17marathon you sort of have to be like fit enough to start the
- 12:20marathon block, like to just push on again.
- 12:23So you in a way like this is probably an unreal training step
- 12:28training run for you. Like the effort you buy out
- 12:29there today was better than any training session really that you
- 12:32could have probably put in and Yogi just with the race
- 12:35conditions and all that. But I'm curious about the shoes.
- 12:38How did what shoes did you wear and how did they feel?
- 12:41Oh no, they were good. Actually, I'd only so I worked
- 12:44the new Brooks Hyperion 5. I've been wearing the, I put in
- 12:49four PVI think they're called in like track sessions and stuff.
- 12:53I like them because they're, you know, a lot of the Super shoes
- 12:56are pretty squishy, like pro Fours Alpha Flight, like they're
- 13:01quite soft. I found they kind of screw my
- 13:03calves a little bit, you know, like if you're sinking in all
- 13:05the time, I guess your calves dropping lower or something.
- 13:09It's like my calves have always been my sort of weakness,
- 13:11whereas in them, because they're a little bit firmer.
- 13:13Yeah, I was having no problem. So I quite like them.
- 13:16And the fives are similar, they're just a bit lighter.
- 13:20Yeah, no complaints. They yeah, they got the job
- 13:22done. So the PB, I think Ben Felton
- 13:26ran his half marathon personal best of them as well.
- 13:29They're sort of like a light bluey green shoe, are they?
- 13:32Yeah, that's it. I think it's that's a different
- 13:35it's the same to the new one. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:38It's like the PBS some kind of it stands for something.
- 13:41It's like their new foam formula.
- 13:44I think it's a big improvement on the old ones and that's what
- 13:46the five have as well, but they've some are made it lighter
- 13:50or whatever. I'm the least like shoe
- 13:53technical guy. I'm like oh, they feel good.
- 13:55Yeah, job done. That's I'm definitely not a shoe
- 13:58tuber, Yeah. I think I'm starting on the same
- 14:01as you. Like you get when you felt you
- 14:04put your foot into a soft shoe, you're like, Oh my God, this is
- 14:06so good. But now you're sort of like sick
- 14:08of the softness and you actually want to like feel the ground
- 14:11again. So I bought a pair of like Nike
- 14:13Streak Fly two there the other day and again, you could feel
- 14:16the ground and I'm sort of like, Oh my God, this is actually,
- 14:19it's nice to actually be able to push off the ground again.
- 14:22Yeah, you're so used because everything now is just bigger,
- 14:24bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger. It's like Go Max, whereas it's
- 14:27slightly more old school style. But now I kind of yeah, I like
- 14:30them. I guess we should also
- 14:32acknowledge that Jake has recently signed a deal with
- 14:36Brooks, hence wearing these shoes because I think we
- 14:38mentioned it before, but we might not have been recorded.
- 14:41And then so and I was listening to your your video, Jake, where
- 14:45you kind of announced it and you mentioned it's kind of a bit of
- 14:48a crossover between a kit or a shoe deal, however you'd call it
- 14:52unlike the influence inside as well.
- 14:54So obviously not wanting to mess up any Ndas, but what can you
- 15:00tell us about the deal? Yeah, yeah.
- 15:02So it's like, I mean, yeah, I've ran 214, but if you look at all
- 15:06the other Brooks guys that are signed, they're sort of at least
- 15:09just under 210 or maybe like 210 level.
- 15:12So that's probably, if I had no YouTube channel, none of that
- 15:15sort of the level I'd have to be.
- 15:18And that's obviously the target. That's what I want to get to.
- 15:20But it shows that, yeah, the the value of the YouTube channel.
- 15:23It was worth starting that and they've I think they see it as
- 15:27yeah, basically promotion. They they've seen the value in
- 15:30the videos that I mean yeah, just the comments on my latest
- 15:33round. It's crazy people are I feel
- 15:34like they've made their money back bricks already when you're
- 15:37saying I'm buying some brick shoes.
- 15:39I'm going out now getting a new pet.
- 15:41Insane. But yes, I'll do a bit of what I
- 15:44like is that they basically don't want to mess with my
- 15:47videos at all. So they're they say you keep
- 15:50recording however you want You you do your style.
- 15:53And then it's more of a natural integration.
- 15:55Like I'm wearing Brooks kit now all the time.
- 15:58It's not like in every video I've got to be like, oh, by
- 16:01Brooks, like get this, get this, that kind of thing.
- 16:03So I quite like it. It's much more natural.
- 16:07This Yeah, I keep making YouTube videos as it is.
- 16:09And then there's obviously like performance bonuses and stuff.
- 16:13There's incentives to try and like, keep improving, get quick
- 16:17over the marathon. And have they, have they offered
- 16:20you like coaching at all or that's purely down left to you
- 16:23as well? That's basically all their
- 16:26athletes are in America, and with me, they're trying to stay
- 16:32in. With me trying to stay in.
- 16:37Do we keep rolling? Yeah.
- 16:39Yeah, we keep rolling. Ryan can.
- 16:41Ryan can cut himself in and out. That's no problem.
- 16:44If this is still in the original take, just FYI, Ryan's just left
- 16:51the left the chat. But that's this stuff what it's
- 16:55worth, Jake, this stuff happens all the time and we just cut it
- 16:58out or or or we don't. And then when someone messages
- 17:02us to say we forgot. To cut it out so.
- 17:04I like to get in the behind the scenes.
- 17:09Yeah, I can't. Where was that?
- 17:12All the Brooks at least being based in America, like yeah,
- 17:14yeah, yeah, coaching. We've, yeah, we're coaching
- 17:18because I want to stay in Japan. I'm trying to at the moment,
- 17:20actually, I'm in talks with a few different Japanese teams to
- 17:25try because that's basically, that would be the game changer
- 17:27if I could join a group, get pulled along.
- 17:30So I. Yeah, and that's what you
- 17:32mentioned. That's what you mentioned in you
- 17:34on your on, on the on the chat with Ryan is just that you see a
- 17:38way for you to improve particularly for your workouts
- 17:41would be just to try because you're when you first moved you
- 17:43would your group which sessions were.
- 17:45So we're working pretty well, whereas now you're having to do
- 17:47so much solo. Yeah, it was unreal for that.
- 17:50I probably came across at, I don't know, 222 roughly kind of
- 17:54shape. And then because everyone in the
- 17:56group was 222 to maybe 217. It's unreal.
- 18:00Like every session I'm just sort of moving slowly up through the
- 18:03group. But then the worst bit is being
- 18:05the fastest and it's like I'd have to slow my paces down to
- 18:09run with people or what I've basically just done is decide,
- 18:14right, I'm sure have to solo everything because if I'm trying
- 18:16to up the levels, I can't really be training like a 270
- 18:20marathoner trying to run a 210 marathon.
- 18:23But then yeah, there's plenty of 210 guys in Japan, the hundreds,
- 18:27whoever is just actually getting in a squad.
- 18:30That's the challenging but. You're actually making steps to
- 18:34see if that's possible. You do think that's potential?
- 18:36Like that's at all possible. Yeah, I had a a meeting a couple
- 18:41of days ago with one of the managers from the teams.
- 18:45I've been firing out some emails, ChatGPT them obviously
- 18:49for the Japanese. I'm like, and then they and then
- 18:52they meet me on Zoom and I'm like, like this fluent Japanese
- 18:58e-mail. I actually had to get one of my
- 19:02mates in who's bilingual. It's like a translator.
- 19:07I was like, I can, I can chat basic, but if we're trying to
- 19:10talk like details and stuff, there's no chance that's
- 19:13happening. So I'm hoping, yeah, that one of
- 19:16these come through and I can join one of the teams soon.
- 19:19That's cool. Obviously you are, I'm just
- 19:22really interested in in the shoes.
- 19:24I don't know why, but you're a big obviously night guy before.
- 19:27What is your like daily trainer now?
- 19:29Night. I've never heard of Nike, mate.
- 19:31No, that's bad. Well, you know what you're
- 19:33talking about. I've always been a bricks man.
- 19:35Sorry. Wait, what was the question?
- 19:40Sorry. What is your like daily shoe to
- 19:43go to now if you're just going out for let's say A20K or A10K
- 19:47run, what is your shoe? So the it's actually a perfect.
- 19:50It's almost like for like I feel like.
- 19:52So I always used to run in vomero.
- 19:54That was my like go to. Now I've got the glycerin Unreal
- 19:58like yeah, just I feel a bit easy running.
- 20:02Sort of a cushion in there gets the job done.
- 20:04So that's what I've been doing all these days.
- 20:06Because I feel like like now I all the shoe brands are on level
- 20:09like like every shoe has every brand is like a different type
- 20:13of shoe for you. So like the Romero's the
- 20:15equivalent of the Glycerin, like super shoes is on the same level
- 20:19as the Brooks super shoe. So certainly, yeah, that's the
- 20:22good thing about today. Like all the shoes are like par.
- 20:24I think they're all the same. Yeah, so much more even playing
- 20:27field and I think, yeah, it's more comes down to preference.
- 20:30Yeah, 1 might be a little softer, 1 slightly higher stack.
- 20:33I want it's all more personal preference exactly at this
- 20:36point. So Josh, Josh Cares obviously
- 20:40got his own like signature spike with them, hasn't he?
- 20:43I wonder when we'll get like the the Rant to Japan Super shoe.
- 20:46I assume that must be in the works.
- 20:48There's got to be talks behind the scene.
- 20:51Surely if Josh goes game on the rant to Japan fan base they need
- 20:57the custom spike. Are are Brooks, do they have a
- 21:01big presence in Japan, like from a retail point of view, are they
- 21:04on this High Street and stuff? Tiny, I think so that's part of
- 21:08the thing they want to because it I never see anyone wearing
- 21:11Brooks in Japan. It's all ASICS added as Nike.
- 21:15So I think that's part of the reason they see that I've got
- 21:18that sort of reach over there to I guess help them sort of grow
- 21:23in the Asian market because they're pretty small.
- 21:25Well, in Australia, what do you see a fair amount of Brooks or?
- 21:30Yeah, I mean, Brooks used to be like very popular, like
- 21:34particularly when there was like, like the structured, more
- 21:37structured shoes became like in vogue, like the Brooks base.
- 21:41I don't know if you got this is the shoes right.
- 21:44Yeah, super heavy like I, I used to wear them again because they
- 21:48were sort of, you know, support shoes and those exactly those
- 21:52Beastie shoes that basically people would wear rather than
- 21:55putting on an orthotic. They were quite popular.
- 21:59I always I reckon we were running in them early like up
- 22:02until early 2010. So and they had like racing
- 22:05flats that were fairly popular in in ounces.
- 22:08It wasn't until like Nike and the the 4%, I think they're when
- 22:12they when Nike sort of started to get back in the in the game.
- 22:16But Brooks were always sat alongside ASICS and some of
- 22:18those other shoes in terms of having a having a range of
- 22:21either support or neutral shoes that people liked in Perth.
- 22:25So they and they still do like most retailers, like sporting
- 22:29retailers would would have a range of Brooks shoes for sure.
- 22:31It's. In the UK stuff you see them a
- 22:34lot, right? UK and Ireland lots of.
- 22:37With the all the run run crews and like the the social and the
- 22:41fun run clubs, though they're all wearing like Nike and Adidas
- 22:44and ASICS and stuff, aren't they?
- 22:47That's where like Brooks aren't presents.
- 22:49I guess some like old school runners who like get the get the
- 22:53feet fitted and tested and stuff.
- 22:55They'll get recommended a Brook shoe because it's like the
- 22:58perfect one for them. But like the the fashionable
- 23:01runners or whatever, however you'd call them, feel like they
- 23:04wouldn't put Brooks on. The the high rocks type.
- 23:10Let's not go there. Yeah, you I love it was true
- 23:15that podcast that I found that it was the what is it?
- 23:20Start high rocks, the hybrid. Hybrid Rocks.
- 23:24That's incredible. That's great.
- 23:29But I worked in sort of one of them like specialty running
- 23:32stores when I was in Australia. And arguably the best selling
- 23:36shoe would have been like the Brooks Adrenaline or the Brooks
- 23:40Brooks Littering, because it's just such a good shoe for like
- 23:42people's feet, like it supports them, like it suits everyone.
- 23:45So yeah, it's actually a really good brand to get into it as
- 23:49well. Yeah, pretty, yeah, pretty
- 23:52buzzing to lock that in. So yeah, no, no, good video.
- 23:55Yeah, I feel like. It's a big expense.
- 23:57It's a big expense ticked off. How did you get on?
- 24:02Yeah, crazy. How did you get on with your
- 24:04shakeout run yesterday? It was, I said, see, I was.
- 24:09I thought maybe I'll do my own thing, like like whack on my
- 24:13story or advertising a video. I'm almost glad it didn't
- 24:17because like it just could have been too much.
- 24:20So I ended up because like organizing it, I was like, oh,
- 24:23so I've just partnered up with Pillar Performance for some like
- 24:27videos around Gold Coast and they were doing a shakeout
- 24:29around and was like, oh, come along.
- 24:31So I kind of just tagged team with them, put it on my story,
- 24:35said, Oh yeah, anyone wants to come.
- 24:36And jeez, people showed up still.
- 24:39Like it wasn't even near. You had to get like a 45 minute
- 24:42bus down. It wasn't even really in central
- 24:45Gold Coast. So it's like kind of out the
- 24:46way, but yeah, crazy, like so many people there as well.
- 24:51So yeah, it's insane how many people I've met here on the Gold
- 24:54Coast. I think we chatted a bit about
- 24:57this offline, but just when we were watching the live stream,
- 25:01the amount of comments that were about the rent of Japan Army
- 25:05versus like, because I think a lot of the footage either cut
- 25:09between the lead men and women's packs and you and you were sat
- 25:13somewhere in the middle and there were people.
- 25:16The the the the chat was like blowing up with a bit of outrage
- 25:20that there wasn't enough ranted Japan content being displayed.
- 25:24I don't know if you've seen much of it or have any any anything
- 25:28more to add, but it was it was it was cool for us to see.
- 25:32Yeah, oh, it was insane. Yeah, we were saying before
- 25:35affair. But like in Japan I'll get
- 25:38recognised occasionally. Like maybe if I'm running at
- 25:41Yogi Park, I might bump into some foreigners because my
- 25:45Japanese audience is still pretty small because, like, I'm
- 25:48speaking in English. So with that language barrier,
- 25:50it's actually not super common to get recognized.
- 25:52And this was the first time, I mean, other than Copenhagen, but
- 25:56I spent that whole time in a hospital.
- 25:58So yeah, there wasn't much opportunity to meet people.
- 26:01But here, like, genuinely insane.
- 26:05It was. It was crazy just how just
- 26:08getting stopped constantly walking down the street, like at
- 26:11my hotel everywhere. It's legendary.
- 26:15And then yeah, on course was just it was almost at first it
- 26:18was actually a bit overwhelming because you know, see at the
- 26:21start you do a little out and back loop bit.
- 26:24So the first you kind of go out three K and then you come back
- 26:28and it may be 5K. You're sort of looping past all
- 26:31the massive runners and they're like basically for 10 minutes
- 26:35straight. I had Jake run to Japan, shouted
- 26:38at me every second like it was in it's bad because, you know,
- 26:43in a race, if it's one or two, you might acknowledge or give a
- 26:45little nod or. And at first I'm doing that and
- 26:48then I'm like, I'm going to be exhausted if if this is going
- 26:51the whole way. I was like, it was, yeah, a
- 26:53little bit too much. But then I kind of just
- 26:55eventually just kind of got used to it and just locked in so I
- 26:58could hear it all. But, and it definitely helped
- 27:01that, I reckon without that I'm not dipping to 20.
- 27:05That was worth a minute. Just having this constant like
- 27:08wall of support. There was a point.
- 27:11There was a point where in the stream, I think Mona must have
- 27:14been sick of, of reading all the comments or maybe finally, like,
- 27:18made sense of it all. And he was like, oh, they're
- 27:20going crazy about this guy from Japan in the chat.
- 27:23Oh yeah. You mentioned it.
- 27:27Oh, that's good. Injury.
- 27:28Yeah, I bet anyone watching must have been a little bit pissed
- 27:30off if they didn't know. Like what?
- 27:32Why are we chatting about this random guy back in 219?
- 27:35I got proper runners at the front.
- 27:38Yeah, that's a joke I guess. Then, looking forwards, are we
- 27:42allowed to ask you about future races plans from Gold Coast now
- 27:46that you've got that one on the above?
- 27:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. We can, we can keep it a little
- 27:50bit discreet, but yeah, yeah, there's there's stuff in the
- 27:53works. Will you run 1/2?
- 27:54Between now like or will you dabble in some shorter races?
- 27:58Yeah. Yeah, I've actually got.
- 27:59So I'm doing a little bit of travel after.
- 28:01I'm going to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane.
- 28:04I'm racing next Sunday the Melbourne 10K the run, Melbourne
- 28:0910K all the run. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:13Roll it. Yeah.
- 28:15Last year was one in. Just under 30.
- 28:17So I thought that could I'm in town, I might as well jump in a
- 28:22race. So I've got, that's just the
- 28:24yeah, sort of bit of fun. And then I want to hit a few
- 28:26quick halves like because I think to run a 210, if I'm
- 28:31looking at that later this year, I probably got to get my half to
- 28:34sub 63, like a 62 something I reckon.
- 28:40So then, yeah, just trying to work on that kind of speed
- 28:42stuff. Maybe it's in 10 KS.
- 28:44The trouble you've got, it's so hot in Japan until about even
- 28:48November could be like 25. I feel like I run best in about
- 28:535, if not lower like like Maragami for me unrealized.
- 28:57Yeah, that was yeah, close to freezing.
- 29:00So. So it's just going to be
- 29:02survival for next few months and you try and hit a quick yeah,
- 29:05maybe half and then full marathon later this year and
- 29:08even when. It's that warm.
- 29:09Will you try and still maintain that mileage?
- 29:11Yeah. I mean, it's not fun, but I
- 29:15think I'm actually when I get back going to head up to
- 29:18altitude. That's what the last summer I
- 29:20spent like a month in the mountains.
- 29:22That's the plan. Round 2 again, like I remember
- 29:28no material, no total, but I mean, I might head back to the
- 29:33same the same. Was it convenient?
- 29:39Yeah, that might have been the highlight of my Japan my.
- 29:43Japan. Time so far because we don't
- 29:46know yeah I was I was doing a home stay this Japanese family
- 29:50who in this sort of altitude sort of a bit like a font remote
- 29:53or one of those attitude places all the athletes there and they
- 29:56had this dormitory but it happened that it was only girls
- 30:00there so it was like me and 3040 of these Japanese girls in a
- 30:07house who's. It's fantastic experience.
- 30:12That was no, I think that's your like.
- 30:13Second or third YouTube video, please go back and give it a
- 30:16watch. It is priceless.
- 30:18It's so funny, I wish I was. Screamed when I was there
- 30:21because I think I I was it was post Yeah.
- 30:24Just I think that's why it just kicks out of the YouTube
- 30:25channel. Maybe I have to get some some
- 30:27live vlog content this time? And come here.
- 30:33I know in your previous your YouTube video you just released,
- 30:36you sort of you have a little note about your iron levels.
- 30:40Like will you want to get that under control before you
- 30:43obviously go to altitude again? Yeah, this is so.
- 30:45That's almost that in itself pretty much from so we Tokyo
- 30:50Marathon, there was a period of maybe two months where because
- 30:54I've been getting probably every month my iron check to sort of
- 30:57see, and it was that two-month period.
- 31:00I crept back up. It wasn't even high, but my sort
- 31:03of hemoglobin, red blood cell, all of those were in the like
- 31:06normal range, acceptable range. And I took, yeah, 5 minutes off
- 31:10my marathon without actually getting any fitter.
- 31:13Nothing in my training, training changed.
- 31:15So like purely, it's almost like you're running with a limiter
- 31:19with the iron deficiency. And so I'm thinking now because
- 31:22I'm back at where I was right before when I was like, bats are
- 31:27all of my hemoglobin red blood cell.
- 31:30Yeah, I guess you just can't transport the oxygen around your
- 31:32body. So like suddenly you fix that.
- 31:34And today could have been, I don't know, 2:15.
- 31:37So it's almost it's it's quite deceptive, but I don't feel like
- 31:40I need to get much fitter. Almost just the priorities are
- 31:43going to be sorting that. Will you?
- 31:46Like like so I always thought that if your ferritins 50 or
- 31:51below that it has a potential to impact on the yeah, production
- 31:55of hemoglobin. And then so here I think if it's
- 31:5930 or under, like a general GP would be able to administer A
- 32:04and I forget the the dosage, but there's like a regular dosage.
- 32:07Whereas it sounds like in Japan, it's very regulated and more
- 32:10regulated such that the amount that you can get is well below
- 32:13sort of what the regular amount is.
- 32:16So is that part of the problem? Is that because it's, it's a
- 32:20more common issue, particularly in for females in sport, that
- 32:24they sort of struggle with their iron levels.
- 32:25And this is a way to do it such that you sort of just get them
- 32:28back up. Like you can get it topped up
- 32:30and sort of continue about, you know, life basically.
- 32:34Yeah, because. So I've had some higher doses,
- 32:37but I think it's still nothing compared to because, you know,
- 32:41it's almost like they're they're so conservative with it.
- 32:44I was having to go every week when it was really bad and get
- 32:48an iron dose. But then I was looking at the
- 32:50amount and it's miniscule because talking to Aussies,
- 32:54they're like you get it done once and bang your sorted.
- 32:57Like that's that's it. Yeah, you don't say.
- 32:59Two years or something like it, it'll say enough.
- 33:02You get your, you know, you might get this checked six
- 33:05months or once a year, but the amount you get sends you back
- 33:09into the hundreds ordinarily. And so you're sort of.
- 33:11Yeah. It's interesting that it's, it's
- 33:13so conservative. Yeah, it's almost.
- 33:16Worth me looking into it while I'm here trying to yeah, sort
- 33:18that one out. I I think the problem is because
- 33:21it's just with how much I'm running, I'm always going to be
- 33:24so susceptible to it. So it's like my body can handle
- 33:27it like physically, but the it's like the foot strike because I
- 33:31guess every time you land, you're you're crushing those red
- 33:34blood cells. It's like how many times you're
- 33:36pounding those pavements running.
- 33:38Yeah, like 250 KA week. I think it's going to be this
- 33:41could be a constant, like battle almost.
- 33:43Yeah, a mate of mine. Actually did his at uni did his
- 33:46masters in red blood shell iron loss through heel strike in in
- 33:51runners. I think just because it's, yeah,
- 33:53such a such a thing. Yeah, yeah, sounds pretty
- 33:56common. I I think a lot of people, yeah,
- 33:57especially females, suffer with it whilst we've still.
- 34:00Got Jake. Should we go through the half
- 34:02marathon yesterday as well and see if he's can give us any
- 34:06insights on that from potentially seeing it on the
- 34:08road? So in the women's, Leanne
- 34:11Pompiani took the win there in 6914.
- 34:15So last week you may have had Owen and myself hypothesising
- 34:20whether Leanne or Jess Stenson would come up, come out on top
- 34:23there. I think we both sided with
- 34:25Leanne and it looks like unfortunately Jess ended up
- 34:28having a bad day. She was side by side with her
- 34:30through perhaps 10K and then she's just faded a little bit so
- 34:35she ended up running a 114. So Caitlin Adams came through
- 34:39for second in a 7026 and there was a Japanese girl in 3rd in a
- 34:457040. On the men's side, Andy Buchanan
- 34:49took the win and he took also the all comers record, which is
- 34:53the fastest ever time on Australian soil.
- 34:56So he's ran 61 O 8 to take Pat Carroll's record of 6111 and I'm
- 35:03trying to think how long it stood for.
- 35:05I don't want to say 30 years in in case it's incorrect, but it's
- 35:08a long time. Second was a Japanese guy, Kenya
- 35:13Sonota in 6110 and third was another Japanese guy, Noya
- 35:18Sakuda in a 6111. Then we also had Australians
- 35:23come in 4th and 5th for Isaac Kane and Sam Clifford.
- 35:26And again on last weeks discussion between our and I, we
- 35:30were talking about whether it would be Andy or Brett Robinson
- 35:33with the win. And yeah, Brett took it out
- 35:35pretty hard. And then he kind of suffered a
- 35:38little bit in the back half. He didn't suffer in the back
- 35:40half. DNF sorry, after 10K.
- 35:43So it's sad to see that because and I were rooting for him
- 35:47there. But yeah, did you guys see this
- 35:49one? Any opinions on how the race has
- 35:51unfolded? Was that M San?
- 35:52Clifford's half racking debut already ran one before.
- 35:56I think he ran in. Launceston, didn't he a few
- 35:58weeks back? Potentially.
- 36:00Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. He did.
- 36:02He also ran. He ran 1/2 in the marathon
- 36:05today, he dropped out AT21K and he ran 65 minutes.
- 36:09Really. I think he.
- 36:12Was wait sound like I think he was pacing Reece.
- 36:16So he he came in as like an unofficial pacemaker, I think
- 36:20last minute because Reece was looking to run.
- 36:23Yeah, like 210 or so 211. So that's what they were rolling
- 36:26through at half Crazy after that half marathon yesterday.
- 36:29Just a casual 65, just like maybe think.
- 36:32You're the king of recovery. Yeah.
- 36:34All right. Put me to shame.
- 36:36Yeah, his name suddenly come out of nowhere, like the ASICS
- 36:39event. He was absolutely flying.
- 36:42He just sort of popped off recently.
- 36:44I think he'd done it. I.
- 36:45Had him. He'd done an interview a couple
- 36:47of months back and it sounds like he had a really good couple
- 36:50of years when he was younger and then he kind of fell off a
- 36:52little bit and perhaps wasn't living the running lifestyle, if
- 36:56you like. And then since he's like came
- 36:58back and been a bit more mature, he's popped off, Yes, serious.
- 37:02Talent there. Jeez, not a car.
- 37:05Horse. Nah, yeah, he's got.
- 37:07Some wheels for sure. Did you?
- 37:09Did you see the way Andy won this?
- 37:12Like it looked like he was finished at one point he got
- 37:14gapped by like, it's hard to tell, but between 5 and 10
- 37:18meters and it looked like if anyone from Australia was going
- 37:21to win, it was Isaac Hayne. And then he just got himself
- 37:25back on and put the 2 Japanese guys to the sword.
- 37:28Like he's so incredibly strong, isn't he?
- 37:30He was like repeated last year. I literally.
- 37:33Thought when I was watching it that I was watching a replay at
- 37:35one point I like checked the stream because I was like, have
- 37:38I like just opened up the stream from last year because it was
- 37:42him just getting dropped. Isaac Kane like smiling at the
- 37:46camera at like 45 minutes looking really strong.
- 37:50And I was like, isn't this? Didn't we?
- 37:52I've seen this before and then yeah.
- 37:55Yeah. And then when it got.
- 37:56To AK to go and Andy's like closed the gap.
- 37:59I was like, this is like it was unbelievable.
- 38:02Because on that you go over that little like lump, like over that
- 38:06little canal. And you know, you take that
- 38:08corner as you sort of come when you're more exposed to the wind,
- 38:11then you, you turn and come off that corner.
- 38:13And then there's sort of that finishing straight.
- 38:14It's about AK to go. And yeah, Andy sort of went to
- 38:17the front there. And that's I'm pretty sure
- 38:19that's exactly what he did last year, albeit I think they ran 62
- 38:231/2 minutes last year. So to run, you know, 61 close to
- 38:2761 flat, that's pretty pretty fast going was funny in.
- 38:31The commentary of them, if you heard it, but it was Mona and
- 38:35that Pat Carroll, they had them there as well.
- 38:37And they were kind of like hypothesizing all the way and
- 38:39flair and with would the record go with it not.
- 38:42And you could tell Pat Carroll was like quite severely stressed
- 38:47by the thought of it going. And then when they started to
- 38:49slow, maybe like 10 to 15 K, he was chilling out a little bit.
- 38:54And then they started kicking down again.
- 38:56And he was like, Mono was trying to commentate on the race
- 39:00unfolding. Like, forget about the time.
- 39:02Look at what's happening in front of us.
- 39:04And then Pat Carroll keep coming back in with like, oh, I think
- 39:07they're about 5 seconds off pace.
- 39:09Oh, no, it's looking like it's going to go.
- 39:12I was watching the. Live stream as well.
- 39:13It was very entertaining, but it seemed to be he didn't really
- 39:17care about who won. It was purely what's the record
- 39:19getting broken? Yeah.
- 39:22He was one of the first, I think Pat Carroll was one of the first
- 39:25to comment when it didn't go because it missed.
- 39:26They missed it by like 5 to 10 seconds at Launceston about a
- 39:30month or so ago. And, and his comment was like my
- 39:32record lives sort of thing. So you then have him in the
- 39:35commentary booth, like sweating on it.
- 39:38And because I think they went through 10K in what, 2840,
- 39:41right? So they went through, which I
- 39:44think was ahead. And so then he's starting and
- 39:46then so they went through a 10K ahead of record pace.
- 39:50And then he starts talking about the shoes, like super shoes and
- 39:53about them, about them falling over around the court.
- 39:56I think he was almost hoping that couldn't turn because it's
- 39:59at 10 1/2 K as they do AU turn. And then it starts and then like
- 40:03you say, then everyone slows down the record.
- 40:05They're behind record pace. And so then the record chat
- 40:07starts again and he's, you can hear him much more happy and
- 40:11then and then. I think in the last finishing
- 40:13shoot, you can hear him under his breath.
- 40:15It's gone. Like it like it's sad.
- 40:20Like Mod is calling the guy in. Yeah, Mod is calling the guys
- 40:23into the finish and you can just hear it Pat in the back.
- 40:26Oh, it's gone. Very.
- 40:29Funny, the roller coaster of emotions for it.
- 40:31You really went for it in that one.
- 40:33Yeah, I'll say in. Fairness, you have to
- 40:35acknowledge like the fact that stood so long.
- 40:37Like what a run that must have been.
- 40:40Also pretty super. Shoes like that probably is
- 40:42about 30 seconds. I'm surprised.
- 40:45You can mention that. All these super shoes back in my
- 40:48day, yeah, no it. Definitely.
- 40:51I think was probably worth a bit and I think they might have said
- 40:54the last, like I don't think they'd gone under 62 minutes at
- 40:56the Gold Coast. I'm going to get it wrong, but
- 40:58for a long time, so like like years and years and years.
- 41:02So that was like goes to two. It's like a different era when
- 41:05he was running back when those guys were running.
- 41:08Yeah, potentially. Because Andy's obviously chose
- 41:11to go to world champs rather than Sydney, but he may have
- 41:14just got his Sydney payday this weekend and here with the course
- 41:17record, the win, the all comers record, it's probably been paid
- 41:20out pretty nicely anyway. Yeah, it's pretty stacked from.
- 41:23An Aussie perspective, that was definitely the race that was
- 41:26more loaded than than the marathon for sure.
- 41:29I guess with Sydney. All the top Aussies will go
- 41:33there for the payday, right? Because I think you get Gold
- 41:35Coast terms of Aussies was pretty light this year.
- 41:38There wasn't really many at all. But I guess when Sydney are
- 41:41chucking some money around, it kind of makes sense.
- 41:44Like it's big. Money like it's worth the trip
- 41:47to Sydney if you're and what's. What's it pay down like?
- 41:51Top top five is it? Top five Aussies.
- 41:54I think yeah #1. Gets like 30.
- 41:56Yeah, I've got it here. Is that from your?
- 41:59Your confirmation e-mail? Yeah.
- 42:05You probably can't. See it, but yeah, it's 30 grand
- 42:07for the winners, 2nd, 23rd, 10, fourth five, 5th, 2 1/2 and then
- 42:14if you get a record an extra 10. But that's just that's Aussie
- 42:17only prize money, which is cool that they do that.
- 42:20So it's sort of limited just to Australian athletes.
- 42:22So it's like a race within a race and because it is paid.
- 42:25Down to 5th then potentially. That's why there's not many
- 42:28doing Gold Coast, because, I mean, Reese's bit mad.
- 42:31They'll probably do it anyway. Others would be like, looking to
- 42:35train through and stuff, wouldn't they?
- 42:37Yeah, and to. Be honest.
- 42:38So prior to Sydney, so Gold Coast they'd offer.
- 42:41So they do area championships and it'd be like, I think you
- 42:44get 3 grand, 2 grand, 1 grand for first, second, third,
- 42:47Oceania. And then they do time incentives
- 42:50as well. So for every minute under 220
- 42:53you would get, it used to be 1000 bucks for every minute.
- 42:56I think that maybe half that recent like in the last year or
- 42:59so, but so they give performance incentives for for that as well.
- 43:03So another good like Oceania based incentive, which is nice
- 43:08because it sort of encourages Aussies to run local races.
- 43:11I think the. Last thing we'll talk about
- 43:13whilst we've got Jake because he's going to drop off in a
- 43:15minute, is there was a 5000 meters in the UK and the the
- 43:21Highgate Harriers London 5000 meters.
- 43:23So that's the guys who previously put on the night of
- 43:26the 10,000 meter PBS I think at their track.
- 43:30So on the men's there it was worn by Phil Sessman.
- 43:34So one of Jake's competitors for AGB vest in the future.
- 43:39So he's running better when you see when.
- 43:42He's 6 minutes quicker than this for sure.
- 43:46So, Phil. 'S shown Jake what 5K time he
- 43:49needs to get down to there in the time of 30 and 36.
- 43:54Oh. It's ridiculous.
- 43:57That is wingers right there. I did see.
- 44:00You talk about this Jake, but like have you, will you do any
- 44:03because it's summer, will you do any sort of track racing or
- 44:05anything like that to try and see what you can run for 5K?
- 44:09No, I can't think of anything. Worse than a 5K?
- 44:11You're like, you're like 35° that.
- 44:15Sounds. That's worse than a marathon.
- 44:17The. Only thing wearing.
- 44:19Spikes I find it's just ruins my calves.
- 44:22Like maybe I'd need to train and get used to them but I put them
- 44:26on once for one session. Maybe it was last summer I was
- 44:29like I was planning a track season so I'll cut them on for a
- 44:32little light. I don't know, 400 workout.
- 44:34I could barely walk for like a week after Ruin me.
- 44:38So I'm too used to the big city shoes now.
- 44:40Fair enough. Fair enough.
- 44:42How? How do?
- 44:44Front runner do it. They start to put them on for
- 44:46like a couple of reps at the end of each session and then like
- 44:49gradually build it up, don't they?
- 44:51As as you come into the season, maybe, yeah, exactly like.
- 44:54We'll do it like our big workout 10 days before, like something a
- 44:58bit more specific. And then at the back end of that
- 45:00workout, we'll put them on just to try and, but to be honest,
- 45:03Mike, I'm a bit similar. My carbs get tight just looking
- 45:06at spikes. So I think even the last one I
- 45:09did, I didn't even bother putting them on.
- 45:10Just I just saved them for for race night.
- 45:12And they are there's a bit more stack now with some of them.
- 45:15Like there's about 20 mil, which comparatively is, yeah,
- 45:18definitely better. But like you say, at the same
- 45:20time, if it's not your priority, the downtime you need to get
- 45:24back into training, it's just not, just isn't worth the
- 45:27squeeze, is it? Yeah, it's almost.
- 45:28I feel like. That is more recovery than the
- 45:30marathons. It's like I can.
- 45:32I do the training. To do it in shoes, but actually
- 45:36racing on his bikes, it hasn't quite seemed worth it.
- 45:39All right, Ryan, I thought. You're going to ask Jake about
- 45:41the other 5K and pre in that pre classic your one chabet go in
- 45:461358. But I don't really want to get
- 45:48Jake in trouble. Leave the chat just in code.
- 45:59Yeah, probably. Probably so, yeah.
- 46:05Amazing. Remarkable.
- 46:07Remarkable. Is it unbelievable?
- 46:10You could say. It is not.
- 46:13It is not actually. Good.
- 46:16Wasn't there a? 15 as well.
- 46:17Three. Was it faith 348?
- 46:21Yeah, they had the double world. Record.
- 46:24Yeah, the pair of them. Crazy.
- 46:28Scott Convoys, what are we saying?
- 46:30Next item. On the agenda, Jake, I think
- 46:36you've got to go, but cheers for giving us an hour of your you're
- 46:39very tired evening. Go and get some fuel down here
- 46:42and recover well and we look forward to following the rest of
- 46:45your journey. Good stuff.
- 46:47Oh. That's always good chatting
- 46:48voice. I enjoy the podcast so yeah,
- 46:50keep it going. Cheers mate.
- 46:52Safe travels. Cheers.
- 46:54Boys see. You mate.
- 46:55We have to name this one. Easy triple or something just it
- 46:59was it's. Peaked early.
- 47:01That was just fun chatting. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:03I wanted. It was more about.
- 47:04The race, but. I feel like we ran out.
- 47:07We're going to run out of time. Yeah, I know.
- 47:09It was a. Gold Coast debrief.
- 47:11And then we just peppered them on all all of the things.
- 47:13Yeah. Like as I wanted to, I wanted
- 47:16like how did he obviously had now has a good internal gauge of
- 47:19what is race effort for the marathon.
- 47:21Like he like, how did he knew before roughly like what was
- 47:25marathon effort? And then because he said as
- 47:28much, didn't he? When you were chatting, remember
- 47:30when you were chatting to him, he sort of already knew that he
- 47:32wasn't going to likely run a PB. So sort of knows where he's got
- 47:37a really good sense of where his fitness is AT.
- 47:39And then he's sort of optimistic in the race.
- 47:41He's like, look, let me let's see what I can do.
- 47:43But he sort of knew very quickly that like that effort, that
- 47:47percentage of effort wasn't going to be right.
- 47:49And so then he dialed that back. And then he's like, but then
- 47:52he's talking about being in the pain cave early.
- 47:54Like, fuck, he can suffer. Yeah, Yeah.
- 47:59So it just seems like, yeah, it seems like he's got a good
- 48:02handle on where his fitness is at, how to get the most out of
- 48:05himself and how to suffer. It's pretty.
- 48:06It's pretty cool. Like, he's seems very well
- 48:09suited to the marathon, doesn't he?
- 48:10I guess it shows. Maturity.
- 48:12That he's not having to wait until the point at which he is
- 48:15blowing up to back off. That's yeah, because he knows.
- 48:18The ball, yeah, he knows where it's at.
- 48:20Where? What the You know where the line
- 48:23is? Oh, it's funny.
- 48:25So good, right? Then just to.
- 48:26Finish off that Highgate Harriers London 5000 meets.
- 48:30So yeah, as I mentioned there, Sessman won in 1346 from a guy
- 48:34called Cam Allen in 1349. On the women's side of things
- 48:38there was Abby Donnelly who took the win in a 1532.
- 48:44So it's good to see that the Highgate Harriers are coming
- 48:46back out because I think there was a bit of controversy when
- 48:49they kind of stepped away from doing the night of the 10,000
- 48:52metre PBS. So hopefully we'll see that come
- 48:55back because it was one of the one of the few good 10,000 meter
- 48:59meets across the world, even in terms of it's on my running
- 49:02bucket. List to do it now that I'm over
- 49:04the side of the world again. Yeah, easily accessible.
- 49:07For you now, yeah. In terms of other.
- 49:09Running news and goings on there was obviously pre.
- 49:14Classic was the other major meet this weekend and I know
- 49:18personally I was very excited for a couple of events there,
- 49:22particularly the Baume and Mile. So we'll just go through some of
- 49:25them. Firstly, this Mondo attempted a
- 49:29new world record and contrary to Mondo, who by the way, for
- 49:33context is the the pole vaulter Mondo de Plantis, contrary to
- 49:37our kind of skepticism of him, like jumping well within himself
- 49:41for the other week, he actually failed to get a new world record
- 49:44of plus one centimetre. So he is human.
- 49:49We've had believable he. Makes it believable.
- 49:52Yeah, the commentator. Did allude to the fact that like
- 49:55there's some skeptics online who say he nudges it up a centimetre
- 49:59every time. But like genuinely, why wouldn't
- 50:01you? If your contract is stipulated
- 50:04that you get a payday every time you do a new world record, why
- 50:08would you then try and jump 20 centimetres higher the next
- 50:10time? Same same for Runan.
- 50:13Why did if your contract was that way inclined, why would you
- 50:16try and run a minute faster? But anyway, there was 800 metres
- 50:20for the women. This was won surprisingly
- 50:23somewhat by the Guma in 157.1. I say surprisingly because I
- 50:29think MU, who's the former Olympic champion, was back here
- 50:36and if she hasn't raced for a while, but she was pretty much
- 50:39last and she was like towards the back all the way throughout.
- 50:42So I mean, maybe we'll cut off some slack because it's the
- 50:45first rate race back, but also I think I've seen something she
- 50:49got. Married.
- 50:50Yeah, because her name. Is now a thing MU and then
- 50:54double barrelled with like it almost looks like a Russian
- 50:57name, like Ivan a cough or something.
- 51:01Yeah, and also give her core best luck.
- 51:03She's she's on the beer. She had the good honeymoon.
- 51:07And Mary Mora was also like towards the back as well.
- 51:10And usually she's the one, if not winning these races, she's
- 51:13right up there. So I mean, it bodes well for
- 51:16Keely Hodgkinson and her defense of her title, but I mean, she's
- 51:20been pretty injured and stuff herself.
- 51:22So you'd say the women's 800 is pretty wide open at this point.
- 51:26Who is a man? It's good because like for a.
- 51:29While there's just the three of them and like fair enough,
- 51:31having 3 athletes in an event is pretty good, but now like it's
- 51:34totally wide open even though Keely would probably come back
- 51:37and run something stupid now you'd imagine.
- 51:41It's it's has for the taken like if she can get herself back fit
- 51:44absolutely there's. A men's 2. 100 in which the
- 51:47Olympic champion announced himself being back in peak
- 51:50fitness because he's done a few races.
- 51:53And when it's the Olympic champion, I mean, let's see
- 51:55later. Bogo he's had a few races this
- 51:58season where things haven't quite been as you would expect
- 52:01from an Olympic champion, but he's ran 19.76 for the win and
- 52:06for the world lead here. So that's encouraging for him.
- 52:09Now getting into the serious stuff.
- 52:12There was a women's 5000 meters, which we mentioned before.
- 52:15The Beatrice Chibet of Kenya ran a new world record here in a 13
- 52:20foot 1358.0 something 0, whatever it was.
- 52:26So that's the first ever sub 14 by a woman.
- 52:29And the previous world record holder Sigai was also in the
- 52:33race and she was with her. In fact, I'll I'll open it up to
- 52:37you guys. Do you want to tell me what you
- 52:39thought if you seen this? I think it was like a
- 52:43phenomenal, phenomenal run from Beatrice Jabba.
- 52:47Like she took the lead. I think it was after 2K and
- 52:50yeah, just an absolute machine, like 1358, the first one to ever
- 52:55break 14. Like, it is incredible.
- 52:57So kudos to her. Yeah, I mean.
- 53:00Reportedly it was like quite warm and stuff as well because
- 53:02it was in midday in Eugene. So like you'd like to think
- 53:07based on that and the fact that she was on the front for at
- 53:10least three K of the race, like she could potentially run even
- 53:14quicker, couldn't she? And when she crossed the.
- 53:16Line it looked like she hadn't even broken a sweat like so
- 53:19yeah, crazy and. Because didn't I think they went
- 53:21through 3K and 822, which is what's that what what pace is
- 53:26that per K? Like is that I think they, they
- 53:29looked like they were paid for 2:48 Yeah.
- 53:32And I think they were pays for 248 per K, weren't they?
- 53:34Yeah. And then what did they, what did
- 53:37they close in? Probably the same again.
- 53:39Is that what they've closed in? So I've got.
- 53:42Her SO 8/22. They've taken another 20, yeah.
- 53:45Her last 200 was a 20. I think that's right, right?
- 53:49So they've gone Gee, yeah, because that's when she she
- 53:51didn't break away until 200 to go right.
- 53:55So, yeah, to run that quickly to to close, I think that means
- 53:58that she's run pretty much 248, you know, between those two
- 54:01splits, pretty much smack on. So it's pretty, pretty well set
- 54:04up, pretty incredibly well executed.
- 54:07And then, yeah, that last lap, I think she had to what, closed in
- 54:0964 to get the record they were saying.
- 54:11And then she's closed in like 61 with like yeah, 28 second last
- 54:15200. Yeah.
- 54:17Out of this world, usually you would, maybe.
- 54:19See that even in those like world record type races, that
- 54:23once the pace drops off like the pacer, as in like the rabbit
- 54:27pacer, and once they step off, the pace itself settles a little
- 54:31bit and maybe that third, the 4th K and then they like kick
- 54:34down and bring it home. But she by herself has kept the
- 54:38pace honest and even the whole way and then like obliterated
- 54:42that last 200 meters. Like what she done to Cigar
- 54:45there. She almost like stepped off the
- 54:47track and gave up, didn't she? Yeah, and it probably.
- 54:49Helps. I mean, it's always if you know,
- 54:53the fact that there was still a race, maybe help that get the
- 54:56best best out of everyone, didn't it?
- 54:58Apart from the fact that yeah, Sega, I sort of gave up.
- 55:01I think the commentators mentioned, didn't they, that she
- 55:04sort of just gave up running her.
- 55:05She could have run a really solid time, albeit not have won
- 55:08the race, but umm, could have been runners run beaten her her
- 55:13own old world record if she'd run it through.
- 55:15But she sort of once she realized that she was she wasn't
- 55:18going to win the race, she sort of gave up, didn't she?
- 55:21Yeah. So in second.
- 55:23In second in the end was Negetic in a 1401 and then Sigai in 3rd
- 55:28in 1404. Now on to what I was
- 55:31considering. The main event was the Bauman
- 55:33Mile. So this field, as we alluded to
- 55:36last week, was just insane. And even Dean and I chat.
- 55:39And yesterday we were trying to figure out how do you pick who's
- 55:43going to win this race? And it's fair to say that the
- 55:45guy who did win, we didn't even mention him, did we?
- 55:49So the field, for context, you've got Ollie Hall, Neil
- 55:53Gailey, Hobbs Kessler, Grant Fisher, Jake Whiteman, Timothy
- 55:57Cheriot, Cam Myers, Reynold Chariot, Cole Hocker, Habs,
- 56:01Negus and Niels Laros. So the guy who's won is the
- 56:06Dutch athlete Niels Laros. He's ran a new national record
- 56:09in 345.94 from Negus in second and 345.95 S, 100th of a second.
- 56:16And then the French guy, Habs was in 3rd in 346.
- 56:21So anyone want to offer their thoughts on how they've seen
- 56:24this play out? Yeah.
- 56:28So I think like I feel for Nagoose, right?
- 56:32Like I felt like he was the one that made the race.
- 56:35So he was the only one that chose to go with the pacemakers.
- 56:38I think what were they set for 151 through 800?
- 56:42And he and the pacemaker did an excellent job of literally like
- 56:45of of running exactly per pace. Nagoose went with it, sort of
- 56:49set up the race and. What's the name of the?
- 56:54Is he Portuguese? That no.
- 56:57The athlete that Nader. The French.
- 56:59Guy ABS Sorry it was a. French guy wasn't ABS.
- 57:02That was that he closed. He closed down on the goose,
- 57:07which I think perhaps cost him just in the way in which he did
- 57:10it because he closed in quite quickly and I think maybe just
- 57:12tipped him over the edge. But Nagus sort of made the race.
- 57:16I just felt like he sort of deserved, deserved to win.
- 57:20But like, yeah, yeah, as it's sort of made for an exciting
- 57:26race to spectate, though, because you had Nagus sort of
- 57:28being putting himself out there to be shot at.
- 57:30And then ABS I think sort of what he did was basically
- 57:34because he started to fade. He sort of brought everyone else
- 57:39who there was a big pack, 3rd through 13th were all running
- 57:43together 20 to 30 meters behind the front too.
- 57:45And what made it super exciting was the fact that you had one
- 57:48person sort of fading, which they all sort of that was the
- 57:51carrot for the chase group to run over the top of.
- 57:54And then that sort of once they bridge that, the goose was then
- 57:57to be there to be shot at. And yeah, unfortunately it just
- 58:01got rolled by not running through the finish line.
- 58:03A bit of shades of Tommy Cross in the Zatopec 3 KB race about
- 58:10it. Maybe go when?
- 58:11Word gets back to him that he's been mentioned and he tunes in
- 58:15to listen to the pod to find out that's why he's been mentioned.
- 58:17They'll be thrilled. But it's a fair.
- 58:20Comparison. I mean, the goose wasn't waving
- 58:23his hand to the crowd or anything like that, but but it
- 58:29was a lesson in not running through to the finish like he if
- 58:32he if he dips, he still wins. Speaking of Nagusa.
- 58:35'S waving action. His form is quite weird, isn't
- 58:39it? And I noticed that like that
- 58:41last 20 meters, his fists are like almost just in front of
- 58:45him. He's got no arm drive, so no
- 58:48wonder he's slow. And yet that Laros, for context,
- 58:51has came from at the bell. He was in 11th place, 3.1 He's
- 58:55went through the bell 3.1 seconds behind the goose.
- 58:59So he's his last lap. I don't know what it was but
- 59:01it's pretty insane. Even like the last 100 meters,
- 59:04he's almost 30 meters back and up the inside.
- 59:07Again, why they? They always.
- 59:10Leave. There's always room up the
- 59:11inside. The people get pipped and they
- 59:14get done by someone running up the inside like happens like so
- 59:17often now. He's very young as well.
- 59:20He's going to be 1 to watch now for that world championship in
- 59:22Tokyo. He'll be there there about, so
- 59:25there's generally. Like 6-7 people who could win
- 59:28that really isn't that because you've still in this race,
- 59:31there's no care and there's no angry Britain.
- 59:33Yeah, You wonder what? Career is going to require you
- 59:36know what, Do you not normally run this race?
- 59:38I don't know. That he's ADNS.
- 59:40Like originally he was on the start list, maybe, Yeah.
- 59:44All he's done. All he's done is like walked a
- 59:47few like Grand Slam track meets and so really get to like run a
- 59:51fast race I've seen. An interesting interview, to be
- 59:55fair. Nagus got asked like, Oh well,
- 59:58there's a few of them. But Nagus answered it.
- 1:00:01Why do you think that there's so many people running so fast in
- 1:00:05the 15 this year compared to other years?
- 1:00:07And it's something I hadn't had. Spoken of before, but he says, I
- 1:00:11think to be honest, it's the lack of Inga Britson this year.
- 1:00:14Like you take him out of it and people are like genuinely like
- 1:00:18so fearful of them or like too respectful that they almost when
- 1:00:22he is there, they let him run his own race and then they just
- 1:00:26race the rest of the pack. Whereas now they're not scared
- 1:00:28to like just go to the front and make it fast.
- 1:00:31So it's an interesting take and be interesting to see what
- 1:00:33happens to all these guys when he does come back.
- 1:00:36And lastly, on the card, we had the women's 1500 meter where
- 1:00:40there was another world record gone down.
- 1:00:43So I don't know if I'm able to say that we called it Owen
- 1:00:46because perhaps it was quite obvious given what happened in
- 1:00:49Breaking 4. She's shown that she was
- 1:00:52potential and capable for the world record.
- 1:00:54So Faith Kippy Aegon's won in 348.68, beat lower in her own
- 1:01:01world record with well Tedji unfortunately came through for
- 1:01:052nd. So Jess Hall was behind Kippy
- 1:01:08Aegon right on the back of her for most of the race.
- 1:01:10We told you there with a 351.44 and Jess Hall in 3rd with a
- 1:01:15352.67. That's phenomenal from.
- 1:01:18Your own faith. Like 3 seconds ahead of 2nd.
- 1:01:21She was so far ahead. She was.
- 1:01:23Having a race with the pace and lights, I think wasn't she like
- 1:01:26she was basically racing the world record rather than the
- 1:01:28field and it was just whether she'd get it done or not?
- 1:01:32Like I think she was always going to win.
- 1:01:34All other commentators were perhaps suggesting like, don't
- 1:01:37be surprised if Jeff's Hall's like banging this.
- 1:01:40But I mean, given what Faith had done last week and stuff, kind
- 1:01:44of seems like it was one in the making this one.
- 1:01:47What do you think? Eight runs for 5K versus Chibet.
- 1:01:51Over a 3K would be interesting. Yeah, I.
- 1:01:54I think she still breaks 14 for 5K.
- 1:01:56Like missed a trick. And they should have done
- 1:01:58breaking 14. Yeah, I was thinking.
- 1:02:01I I did think that like, but I wonder because I think it's 14
- 1:02:06minutes has already been broken by the women on the roads.
- 1:02:09So I wonder if maybe people would I don't know.
- 1:02:13I don't know if that was since yeah, it's definitely been been
- 1:02:16broken. So I wonder if that's maybe why
- 1:02:18they they went away from it. Maybe not not, you know, not
- 1:02:21glamorous enough in terms of because it's already so close to
- 1:02:24being done. Lastly.
- 1:02:26With the results there were two meets in France and just there
- 1:02:32was a meeting Stanislaus Nancy in France with a men's 1500
- 1:02:37meters of which Jude Thomas took the win in 332.35.
- 1:02:42He's missed his PB there by like .2 of a second, but he's out
- 1:02:46kicked Owen's boy Andrew Koskaran who was second in
- 1:02:49332.64. So I guess Jude just backing up
- 1:02:54from running the time last week with a win here proving that he
- 1:02:58can he can win races as well. In the women's there, there was
- 1:03:02a 1500 meters also, and Georgia Griffiths was fourth in 4/03,
- 1:03:07but she's already got the qualifier with a 358.
- 1:03:11So I mean, I don't want to say she'll be, she'll be thrilled
- 1:03:14that she's run 403, but the fact she already has the qualifier
- 1:03:17helps. But obviously she wants to be
- 1:03:19shown form. So was 1500.
- 1:03:21Her distance Think she's a little.
- 1:03:23Stronger is didn't she have the national record in the 3K?
- 1:03:26But the 3K isn't a meet at the championships is it?
- 1:03:29So it'll have to be a distance unless she goes. 5K That's a bit
- 1:03:33long. There was another.
- 1:03:35Meeting in Leon, Meeting national the lest Leon ace the
- 1:03:40men's 800 meters. There pit ball wins again
- 1:03:44143.88, which must be about the fourth or fifth time he's ran
- 1:03:48143 this year. So he's really back in form.
- 1:03:53And there is a woman's 800 meters also where test case of
- 1:03:56Cole was second in 2 flat .55. I think that concludes the
- 1:04:02running news this week in terms of results.
- 1:04:05What other interesting things that I've seen this week have
- 1:04:08added to the agenda. So there's a men's 800 meter
- 1:04:11field confirmed for the Monaco Diamond League.
- 1:04:14And now people have been talking about this 800 meter world
- 1:04:17record for a while, potentially going because we've got a lot of
- 1:04:21guys flare and with it and running really quick.
- 1:04:24And now if it's going to go at any point, you'd think that it's
- 1:04:28going to be in this meet, one, because of the field.
- 1:04:30And I think secondly, that Monaco in itself is usually a
- 1:04:34pretty quick meet. So listen to this for a lineup.
- 1:04:37You've got Emmanuel 1, Yoni Sajathi, Josh Howie, Atui, Bryce
- 1:04:43Hoppel, Max Burgeon, Marco Arop and Peak Ball.
- 1:04:46Yeah, and you? Put in that you put it their
- 1:04:49world rank, current world ranking alongside that, right?
- 1:04:53And it's 1-235-678-1012 and 19. So stacked, Yeah.
- 1:05:01What's the stage? How was Marco Arop world rank 12
- 1:05:05when he won the Olympics? This year's world ranking, I
- 1:05:09think the. 800 Have you ever So when you go into the World
- 1:05:13Athletics and you you look up different disciplines, the
- 1:05:17discipline depending on the discipline, the number of events
- 1:05:20that count for points varies. So like for the marathon, the
- 1:05:26requirement is you have to run a marathon and then the second
- 1:05:29time can be another marathon or a half marathon.
- 1:05:32And then you add the points together and the points are a
- 1:05:34combination of how fast you run the race and you get bonus
- 1:05:40points based on position and the status of the meet.
- 1:05:44And so I think for the 800, it might be as many as five.
- 1:05:48I could, I could be completely off on this, but I think it's
- 1:05:50quite a few. And so he probably has in his,
- 1:05:54when you click on to him, he probably will probably have one
- 1:05:56huge score for what he ran in the Olympics, both winning the
- 1:05:59Olympics and running a fast time, But he maybe doesn't have
- 1:06:02the depth. And because he's been running
- 1:06:04those Grand Slam meets like, he's been winning those 1500s in
- 1:06:07like below three 30s, but they're not 327.
- 1:06:10So he's probably not got the ranking that probably correlates
- 1:06:14with just how good he is arguably like.
- 1:06:16You've nearly the top ten engineer people in the world in
- 1:06:19a really, really fast track in Monaco.
- 1:06:22Yeah, it's a recipe for a world record.
- 1:06:24Yeah, there's two pieces of. News about Kenya, I don't know
- 1:06:27if they go hand in hand, but I'm going to read them out together.
- 1:06:30So there was a video shared on Instagram.
- 1:06:32I'm not sure if it's like, legit.
- 1:06:34So it's been settled. But there's a Kenyan athlete
- 1:06:38who's hiding his identity, and he's doing like, a reveal.
- 1:06:44I don't know how to describe it. He's basically speaking to a
- 1:06:46journalist and wanting to, like, tell him that.
- 1:06:49He says most pro runners in Kenya are taking EPO and I don't
- 1:06:54know how far most covers in terms of like, is it literally
- 1:06:58everyone or what? But this, this guy is a pro
- 1:07:02runner himself. He's saying he takes it, He's
- 1:07:04saying almost everyone else does and they do it because they're
- 1:07:08like trying to win races and build generational wealth and
- 1:07:12stuff for the families. So I mean, that just, I mean,
- 1:07:15proves what we've been seeing in terms of all these Kenyans
- 1:07:18getting popped. But it's quite worrying, isn't
- 1:07:20it? Yeah, I've seen.
- 1:07:21That video, it's a bit scary if it's, yeah, direct from the
- 1:07:25horse's mouth. And true, the second news.
- 1:07:28Item for Kenya was, I don't know if you've seen this, it's quite
- 1:07:31bizarre. Athletics Kenya have brought
- 1:07:34forward their trials for the world by 10 days to the 22nd,
- 1:07:3822nd of July. So that's like less than three
- 1:07:42weeks time and they've just shifted it forward by 10 days
- 1:07:46with such short notice. I don't know what the motive is
- 1:07:49there, but it's quite absurd really, isn't it?
- 1:07:53It's. It's crazy.
- 1:07:55Not half the time or last year anyway, they held them in in
- 1:07:58America, so it wasn't even accessible for all Kenyans
- 1:08:02because they have to give visas to America and all.
- 1:08:04It's just crazy what goes on in that country.
- 1:08:06It's I don't like it at all. And then?
- 1:08:09Like you still see all these Kenyans winning these races and
- 1:08:13you can't say anything other than like, congratulate them and
- 1:08:18applaud them for it because as far as you know, they're they're
- 1:08:22just the athlete who's winning the race.
- 1:08:23But then there's all this other controversy surrounding the
- 1:08:26country and it's just, you don't know how to take it.
- 1:08:29It's really sad. As well, because like when you
- 1:08:30think of running, you think of Kenya.
- 1:08:32Like, they're such a rich history in like, running to
- 1:08:36school, all this sort of stuff. And yeah, I don't really know
- 1:08:39what to think because like, some of them, like, could be clean
- 1:08:43and they're running absolutely phenomenally, like, it's crazy.
- 1:08:46And then others, like so many have gone pops and yeah, you
- 1:08:49just don't know what to think. You could, genuinely.
- 1:08:52Be like, you know you are the best amongst your discipline and
- 1:08:55then you see payers take an EPO and then they start to get
- 1:08:58better than you and you're like, well, what do I do?
- 1:09:01Do I do I join them or do I just become irrelevant because I
- 1:09:04can't compete with them and they've mastered?
- 1:09:07It as well, even not the EPO thing the the blood is not blood
- 1:09:11doping as well you can do with them.
- 1:09:14So you have to like track it over time.
- 1:09:16So you nearly get away with it because you have to like you get
- 1:09:19away with it for a couple of years because they have to like
- 1:09:22look at it over a large scale of time before they catch.
- 1:09:24It's like it's nearly worth it for them.
- 1:09:26It's probably. Important to reference as well,
- 1:09:29like as much as we say like money is good for the sport and
- 1:09:32like growth and athletes getting paid and blah blah blah.
- 1:09:36Clearly the fact that there is now a lot of money involved is
- 1:09:39contributing to towards canyons. They open because it's a way for
- 1:09:43them to like, kind of earn such money like crazy.
- 1:09:46Money, like if they win a world major, it's literally different,
- 1:09:50like 1,000,000. So it is like generational
- 1:09:54wealth fund. And it is pretty sad because
- 1:09:55they also come from very rough backgrounds and all that sort of
- 1:09:58stuff. So I think like there's nowhere
- 1:10:00else to go only to do this. But yeah, something has to be
- 1:10:04done next I've seen. That Nike on the back of
- 1:10:08announcing the Pegasus Premium and plus last week they've, I
- 1:10:12don't know if they've officially announced it, but there was some
- 1:10:16images of the new structures going around.
- 1:10:18And I know that the Cupertier and Carl Hocker have for a while
- 1:10:23now said that like the structures are their favorite
- 1:10:25training shoe to do workouts on the track.
- 1:10:28And if they're not putting spikes on even rather than super
- 1:10:32shoes. So I'm keen to see what they're
- 1:10:35like. So is.
- 1:10:36The Vomero Premium and plus were released last week and that
- 1:10:41premium has like 2 of them airbags in the sole and it's
- 1:10:44meant to be like crazy like stack and cushion but I actually
- 1:10:48picked up a pair of structure during the week.
- 1:10:50I always keep like an eye out on all the websites over here in
- 1:10:54Ireland and it was just potluck that I think they're normally
- 1:10:58like 120 a €130, but I don't know how one pair popped up in
- 1:11:04my size for €50. So I was like, you're coming
- 1:11:07home with me, went straight in my basket.
- 1:11:09So yeah, I like them because like they're a really good shoe.
- 1:11:12Their support of they, it's just like an old school type of shoe
- 1:11:16that you can actually pick up the pace in.
- 1:11:21Do they still have? What?
- 1:11:22What foam are they using? Oh, Junior Mark.
- 1:11:25I'll tell you now because are you saying.
- 1:11:28They're fairly like, there's not as much of A drop and they're
- 1:11:30still fairly snappy. Is that what you like about
- 1:11:32them? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:33And they're like supportive, like they're stable.
- 1:11:35Yeah, OK. I don't think it's.
- 1:11:37Any of the fancy foam it's just as air zoom on the side of it.
- 1:11:41So I don't it's the Zoom XI, think the Zoom X.
- 1:11:45Firm is a little bit softer and more cushioned and perhaps
- 1:11:48that's why these are a bit more unresponsive.
- 1:11:50Yeah, yeah. Interesting.
- 1:11:52But the new one, I hate the way like I guarantee you there's not
- 1:11:55much difference between this Structure 25 and the Structure
- 1:11:5826, but the Structure 26 is an extra like €20.
- 1:12:02Yeah, I thought you were going to say.
- 1:12:04When you said I always keep an eye on the websites I always
- 1:12:08keep like some spare money aside in case shoes come up, which it
- 1:12:11sounds like you do both. To be fair, I have not.
- 1:12:15A penny to my name, Hence all the shoes.
- 1:12:21Yeah, when you, when you're injured, you're.
- 1:12:26Loaded nice skins. Yes, since it is.
- 1:12:29It's been spending on. Lactate strips and and and
- 1:12:33bicarb soda and. I was on the track yesterday and
- 1:12:37I from my last 10 mile Rep, I put on my spikes and then opened
- 1:12:42up the laces. But I still like like the shoes
- 1:12:45pretty tight on. So you know the way you take off
- 1:12:47your shoe like this? Yeah, did not know.
- 1:12:50The foam. Yeah.
- 1:12:52That you can't do that particularly yeah, you just.
- 1:12:56Peel your hair. Heel off the shoe.
- 1:12:58I've done that to like 4 percents or vapor flies before.
- 1:13:02I've just torn into the heel of the vapor fly.
- 1:13:04Yeah, so. I've I've erased this coming
- 1:13:07Wednesday. Oh shit.
- 1:13:09So I. Had to spend another £100 on a
- 1:13:12pair of written spikes. That's so annoying.
- 1:13:15As well because how often do you even need spikes?
- 1:13:18Like it's not like I have to get, I have.
- 1:13:21To get white ones and now like I'm really going to use them for
- 1:13:25the 3K coming up Wednesday, coming national 5K and then
- 1:13:28cross country. So I've got white spikes for
- 1:13:32Irish cross country. They'll be like, yeah, recipe
- 1:13:36for disaster, but happy to do it.
- 1:13:38So yeah, another. Reason to help support the pod.
- 1:13:46Yeah, this is. Where we insert the ad which we
- 1:13:49don't have and say this suppose. A brand new one and Owen is
- 1:13:54skins. It's good to hear.
- 1:13:58That rented Japan's being supported because like I've my
- 1:14:03super blast like it's pretty dead right and you can feel when
- 1:14:06the shoes getting lifeless. Can you imagine how many shoes
- 1:14:10he'd be going through Lad I? Actually couldn't imagine, no,
- 1:14:13because maybe that he'd normally put around let's say 607 hundred
- 1:14:17kilometers up. He's doing like 1000.
- 1:14:19Like, no, it's crazy. He had to.
- 1:14:21He deserves a deal. The action deserves him.
- 1:14:24Yeah, do. You boys want to whiz for your
- 1:14:26weeks? Yeah, go on, do.
- 1:14:28You want to go on, OK. So week starting great race by
- 1:14:35the. Way I enjoyed listening to the
- 1:14:37pod. I do listening when I'm not not
- 1:14:40not on same. I just.
- 1:14:46Can't listen to. My own voice, Yeah.
- 1:14:49Oh, no. I.
- 1:14:49Mean, I wouldn't listen if I was recording.
- 1:14:51I just mean that might have been a situation.
- 1:14:53Didn't write an irecord. And then we spoke about stuff
- 1:14:56the next week and you're like, Oh yeah.
- 1:14:59Learning it for the first. Time he was injured.
- 1:15:01So we'll let him off because he was checked.
- 1:15:04Fairpoint, yeah. So this yeah, this the Monday
- 1:15:10after I raced on the Sunday so I don't just an easy 45 minutes in
- 1:15:15the morning. That evening I got out for an
- 1:15:17easy double for a 30 minute jog and some strides.
- 1:15:22Then Tuesday morning it was double threshold day.
- 1:15:27So 3K warm up will cool down and I'd done 4 by 6 minutes of 90
- 1:15:34seconds. So I've done this around my
- 1:15:36local 330 meter gravel track. So yeah, again, feeling crazy,
- 1:15:41feeling good, controlled. And then that evening I done
- 1:15:47another session, 3K warm up, cool down.
- 1:15:49And this one was a little bit more spicy.
- 1:15:51So it was 3 by 5 minutes off 60 seconds.
- 1:15:55And then I had a form in a jog and then I done 10 by woman on
- 1:16:00woman off and let's say predicted 5K pace.
- 1:16:03So now I'm sort of like camp is sort of finishing up.
- 1:16:08So I'm going to try and just try and sprinkle a bit of like speed
- 1:16:11in there, try and get faster. So the mileage will probably
- 1:16:15come down a little bit because the intensity is going up and I
- 1:16:19just want to be careful that I don't want to cross that red
- 1:16:21line and like get sick Rangers and so for that.
- 1:16:24Afternoon workout, because that's quite a bit particularly
- 1:16:26after a morning workout like that's a big, that's a big
- 1:16:30training day with those 5 minute reps how how much?
- 1:16:35So LT1 is like the morning 4 by 6 K, So pretty pretty aerobic,
- 1:16:41not not going to get carried away.
- 1:16:43And those you're you're jogging those recoveries, right.
- 1:16:46So they're pretty like you're making sure you're clearing any
- 1:16:48lactate that is potentially building up.
- 1:16:50That's a tick that sessions done.
- 1:16:52But then those 3 by 5 minutes, how much harder is that than
- 1:16:57than the morning session, if at all?
- 1:16:59I'd say it's like. Per Rep it's nearly like 10 to
- 1:17:0215 seconds, like faster. So that's Lt. 2 for the ideal
- 1:17:06lease, like 4 millimole, give or take for 3 by 5 minutes and then
- 1:17:12potentially faster again for which is for us like on a
- 1:17:16Thursday ahead of just starting double like this double
- 1:17:20threshold stuff on a Thursday, that might be a workout like
- 1:17:22that's close to a mono, right? And you've done 4 by 6 minutes,
- 1:17:263 by 5 minutes, and then you've gone into a basically a Mona.
- 1:17:30But yeah. So the four by 6 minutes, like
- 1:17:33it is crazy, like I've sort of got on like I'm getting fair,
- 1:17:38like it is feeling very, very good.
- 1:17:40And that five by three minutes. I think I've done the lactate
- 1:17:42after that one and it was like 3.2 or something like that.
- 1:17:47And then like performing a jog and then I don't took it at the
- 1:17:51end of the 10 by woman on woman off and it was around like 6.4
- 1:17:56yeah. And that was like yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:59yeah, a solid effort and but it felt good.
- 1:18:03Yeah. It felt good to get the legs
- 1:18:05like running like fast. That's still like.
- 1:18:09Somewhat under control though, isn't it?
- 1:18:11Because you see some people can get readings of like towards 20
- 1:18:14and stuff. Yeah, but because I'm only.
- 1:18:16Holding it for a minute like it actually isn't even getting that
- 1:18:19much time to like. I'd say that was still pretty
- 1:18:22high for what I was doing and your legs were.
- 1:18:24OK, Given you'd raced just like they pulled up all right from
- 1:18:28the the the race. So I was talking to.
- 1:18:30Me mate from Melbourne and he's like, how did the street fly 2
- 1:18:34feel? Because they are minimal and
- 1:18:36they're sort of like they might like eat into your cast a little
- 1:18:39bit more and but no, I was surprised they pulled up fairly
- 1:18:42well. You've just muted yourself.
- 1:18:43Out. Oh yeah.
- 1:18:44Can you hear me? Yeah.
- 1:18:47So yeah, I pulled up fairly well.
- 1:18:49I'm surprised at how like, well, my legs felt.
- 1:18:52And so yeah, no, things are, things are going all right at
- 1:18:57the moment. Just I keep on saying to myself
- 1:18:59like I am only like let's say 4 to 5 weeks in.
- 1:19:03So the training sort of hasn't sort of added up yet.
- 1:19:06It's not taking the toll on my body in like a normal in another
- 1:19:09six weeks, 6 to 8 weeks, I'll sort of know if I've like
- 1:19:12crossed the red line and like I'm overtraining.
- 1:19:14So yeah, I'm sort of just trying to keep things under control at
- 1:19:17the moment. And I feel like with the
- 1:19:18threshold training, like you're able to.
- 1:19:22Then the next morning I got out for just a 60 minute easy jog,
- 1:19:27so around 13 K like 439 pace. And that evening I done my
- 1:19:33circuits class which I thoroughly enjoy.
- 1:19:36Then you know when. When you tagged the the gym
- 1:19:40class on the story, Yeah, I. Followed I.
- 1:19:43Followed them and they never followed us back.
- 1:19:46It's an elite group. It's an elite group.
- 1:19:52I think he was away and he was away in Spain, my coach, so he
- 1:19:54mightn't be he might have been active on the on the socials.
- 1:19:58I'll get I'll get anthem. Oh no, the.
- 1:20:00Coach followed us yesterday, to be fair, yeah.
- 1:20:05Right Thursday morning I done 75 minutes in the morning and
- 1:20:10around 16 1/2 kilometers then. So Friday totally off just
- 1:20:17chilling. I went to the I try get massage
- 1:20:20every second week and then like the week in between that I try
- 1:20:23sauna just so it's like sort of a form of like recovery.
- 1:20:26So yesterday morning I had my first like track session back
- 1:20:32upper like track session. So it was 16112 hundred, 804
- 1:20:39hundred and then back up to 1600 all off like 3 minutes.
- 1:20:44And all these, they were sort of all at the same pace.
- 1:20:47So I was trying to hit between let's say like 73 and 70 and
- 1:20:51just like chill at them. And to be honest, I probably
- 1:20:54felt it was sort of a bit demoralizing wearing because I
- 1:20:56sort of, that was nearly my like 5K race pace and it felt a lot
- 1:21:01harder than 5K ever. But again, it was my first touch
- 1:21:06of speed since returning from injury.
- 1:21:09And it's it's really sort of sad on Strava.
- 1:21:13It shows like your activity from like one year ago today.
- 1:21:16And it was like my Gold Coast shake out for the 10K.
- 1:21:20So it's like, oh, that can happen in a year.
- 1:21:23But like, you know what? Like it was this weekend, you're
- 1:21:274 weeks back you ran 8K in three O 7 per K like at Launceston you
- 1:21:33ran 3040 I think. Didn't you fit for 10K in
- 1:21:37Launceston I? Ran actually 3052 or something
- 1:21:42in Gold Coast around 3041 or something like that.
- 1:21:45Yeah, OK. Yeah.
- 1:21:45So, so you've run 80% of that just off that, that pace on a
- 1:21:51like on a hilly, on a hilly course.
- 1:21:54And you're, I wouldn't think you're like you said, you're
- 1:21:56probably your ceilings not there.
- 1:21:58Like I reckon it takes say 6 to 8 weeks of those track sessions
- 1:22:01to sort of fully feel like you're adapted to that sort of
- 1:22:05stress to sort of get that ceiling back and you're only
- 1:22:07just starting that. So like in two months from now,
- 1:22:12yeah, you know, it's, it's quite possible that your ceiling will
- 1:22:15be higher than than ever. That's that'll come around
- 1:22:18rather than later and it's sort of a little bit.
- 1:22:20Annoying that like the national track, so the all Irelands is
- 1:22:25the start of August. So it's just coming like it's
- 1:22:29coming a tiny bit too soon. Like it was at the end.
- 1:22:32If it was like at the start of September or something, I'd be
- 1:22:34like happy out, but no, it'll be like a lot can happen like 4 to
- 1:22:385 weeks. So yeah, I'm excited to sort of
- 1:22:41just keep on keep on that. Let's see how this double trash
- 1:22:44whole thing works. So yeah, track session in the
- 1:22:47morning. Then yesterday evening I just
- 1:22:48got out for like a 45 minute double just on this grass loop
- 1:22:53and to try and get easy on the legs and it's Sunday morning
- 1:22:56now. So I have an hour and 40 minutes
- 1:23:00and then the 1st 45 are chill and then for 30 minutes in the
- 1:23:05middle I am sort of drop it a little bit and then I'll drop it
- 1:23:09for 30 minutes. Basically pick up the pace and
- 1:23:12then I'll ease off after that up to like an hour and 40.
- 1:23:16So I'm yet to do that. But when you say.
- 1:23:19Pick up just to like steady effort maybe.
- 1:23:22Yeah, so around. I'll try and get around like 330
- 1:23:26bullshit and yeah, so see how the body and like through this,
- 1:23:31I'll be like monitoring my heart rate as well to see like how
- 1:23:33high it gets up to and then after that steady effort, if it
- 1:23:37comes right back down, because ideally you'd want it to come
- 1:23:40right back down to what it was before you started the effort.
- 1:23:43So it'll be interesting to see how that is.
- 1:23:46But All in all this week I'll have done nearly hundred.
- 1:23:50I'd say mid 120, nearly 130. So yeah, I just need to keep on
- 1:23:54stacking these weeks. I'm racing a 3K next Wednesday.
- 1:23:59Obviously I'm not going to taper for it.
- 1:24:00It's just like a free hit basically see what happens.
- 1:24:04But yeah, that's will you have any?
- 1:24:08Anyone to run with in that 3K? Do you know how it might look
- 1:24:11or? Yeah.
- 1:24:11So it's. Actually it's this event called
- 1:24:14Cork City Sports, so I think it's on continental tour, so
- 1:24:18it's not like it's below bronze label.
- 1:24:21And so I'm in like. The open race, basically, I
- 1:24:23couldn't get into the the A race, but the A race will be won
- 1:24:26in like 737 forty like it's pretty legit and I think the the
- 1:24:32open race last year was won in 830.
- 1:24:35So I'm getting planning on just sticking out the back and just
- 1:24:39try and come true, see what happens.
- 1:24:41Again, free hit like I'm not expecting anything massive.
- 1:24:45Will the former? YouTube Diaries.
- 1:24:47I can't remember his name but his surname is Dalton.
- 1:24:51Will he be there, do you think? And.
- 1:24:53Cormac. So I think there's another
- 1:24:56really good race happening in Ireland.
- 1:24:58It's called the Morton Games and that is like a bronze label meet
- 1:25:01and I think he's doing the 5K and that.
- 1:25:04So yeah, it'd still be the three.
- 1:25:07See, there's only like a 3K in this court city.
- 1:25:10Support me like that's the longest.
- 1:25:13So no. So I'd say it'll be like a lot
- 1:25:16of the boys will do with the 3K and then we'll double up.
- 1:25:18I think there's a Morton Mile in the Morton Games, which is like
- 1:25:22the biggest, it's probably the most prestigious rate like track
- 1:25:25race in Ireland. But yeah, no, it's good.
- 1:25:28Not a solid week. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:31How are you going on doing? Yeah, good.
- 1:25:33So yeah, so Monday I didn't run Sunday, I ended up, I think I
- 1:25:37was just a bit unwell on the Sunday, but otherwise I ended up
- 1:25:43having a bit of a down week the week before.
- 1:25:46Like I did 2 double session days, but not too much else,
- 1:25:49ended up just running 100 KS. So then on the Mondays feeling
- 1:25:52feeling better, I dropped the camper van off.
- 1:25:54So it was a run to work from where I dropped that off.
- 1:25:57So 14 KS in the morning for in an hour or just over.
- 1:26:01And then Yep, unsurprisingly ran home that night.
- 1:26:05Tuesday, easy run into the office and then we had a track
- 1:26:08session that afternoon and we ended up having decent weather
- 1:26:15at the track for a change, which was nice.
- 1:26:19We had a 2K threshold and then Benson Straights and one KVO,
- 1:26:23like 1K at VO2 or pretty hard. You guys would remember that
- 1:26:28session. So I don't know why, but Max was
- 1:26:33on a bit of a mission to go pretty fast.
- 1:26:34So normally we do that 2K threshold, we run it in around
- 1:26:37say 610 and I got dropped and I ran 558 so I couldn't keep up.
- 1:26:43And I'm like, oh God, what's happened in the week that since
- 1:26:46I've gone like what's going on here?
- 1:26:48But then we started the bent and straights and Max, Max is like,
- 1:26:51oh, I'm cooked. And I'm like, oh, no disaster.
- 1:26:55So I think that we'd spend a lot of bickies in that first.
- 1:26:59Like that felt harder than what it needed to be.
- 1:27:02And it's only when you say you got.
- 1:27:04Dropped. How fast would they have run the
- 1:27:06the two KN like? 6 seconds probably quicker than
- 1:27:10me, so like 552 I think for your threshold. 2K at the start,
- 1:27:16almost like what is. Going on here.
- 1:27:18So like I, we did the first lap and it was like 73 and then it,
- 1:27:23the next one was 70 I think. And I chatted to Max he's like,
- 1:27:26oh it was a progression wasn't it?
- 1:27:28And I'm like, no, I'm pretty sure it's 5 laps threshold.
- 1:27:31And he's like, oh, I started a bit too fast and thought I'd
- 1:27:33better keep progressing it well. So I didn't know that that's
- 1:27:38what he was doing. And but, and yeah, I think I'd
- 1:27:40gone through too quick for AK and then I I'd slowed it down a
- 1:27:43bit, but by this stage I'd, yeah, it was too fast.
- 1:27:47But anyway, it came back to bite I think a little bit.
- 1:27:50So the Benson straights actually weren't too bad.
- 1:27:54I think, yeah, felt all right. I think it's like 1516 seconds
- 1:27:58for the straights and you know, whatever it would.
- 1:28:01So yeah, 1516 seconds and then 1920 seconds.
- 1:28:05So so close to that sort of 62nd lap pace or to 64 second lap
- 1:28:09pace for the on and then whatever it is 320 pace ish for
- 1:28:12the floats. So they felt fine, but then I
- 1:28:15was feeling pretty cooked by the one Ki think I got.
- 1:28:18I got around in 248, which it's not the quickest I've sort of
- 1:28:22done for that, but got it done. What's the?
- 1:28:26What's the rest between the bends and streets and then UK?
- 1:28:29Well anyone who doesn't know the bends in straight session, is it
- 1:28:348 laps of essentially Sprint in the straight and then just
- 1:28:37floating through the bend? Yeah, exactly.
- 1:28:40So yeah, so it's sort of 2K threshold.
- 1:28:42SO5 laps not not not, not above threshold, but just meant to be
- 1:28:47at threshold jog lap. I would love.
- 1:28:49To done the latte after the threshold just to see what was
- 1:28:52late. I could feel it.
- 1:28:53And I thought, oh, what if we, why did we do that?
- 1:28:57And then the Benson straights, you obviously get fairly flooded
- 1:29:00as well because you're going 15 odd second pace, which for me is
- 1:29:03like hard moving that like quickly.
- 1:29:07And that's 4 laps. So you do, yeah, 4 laps of like
- 1:29:11sort of Sprint jog, Sprint jog, but you sort of keep the jogs
- 1:29:14fairly continuous. You know, you're not, you're not
- 1:29:17backing right off those jogs. And SO4 laps of that 90 seconds
- 1:29:21static rest and then do that again.
- 1:29:23Then you do a jog lap, but it ends up being a lap and a half
- 1:29:26because you jog around to the 200 meter spot to do your, your
- 1:29:301K sort of close to all out. And by this stage the Max was on
- 1:29:36the physio table and I was left. I was by myself, so he didn't
- 1:29:40finish it. No.
- 1:29:42He was pretty sore battling an injury, but so battling an
- 1:29:46injury. So he just ripped out 552
- 1:29:50threshold at the same. He must have watched one.
- 1:29:53Of Jake's videos of Jane Hart. So we're seeing.
- 1:29:58The effects of Dean sending another training partner to the
- 1:30:01physio, Ralph would probably. Blame me maybe, but I was behind
- 1:30:06him so therefore so yeah, I don't think it was my fault.
- 1:30:10Wait for the Toms to be like. Yeah, we need.
- 1:30:13The Toms back, they Tom, the Toms Toms gave it much more
- 1:30:16orderly, whereas Max, Luke and I, it's all going a bit skewed
- 1:30:20if but yeah. So Wednesday, I can't remember
- 1:30:25what happened Wednesday, but it was a bit of a messy day family
- 1:30:30wise. But I did jog to and from the
- 1:30:32office, but I'm jogging from late Munga so I parked the car
- 1:30:34there. I did school drop off, had to
- 1:30:36get into the office for work rah rah rah.
- 1:30:38So it's a pretty short day of like 244 and a half K runs,
- 1:30:42which I didn't mind because you sort of have a big Thursday with
- 1:30:45that double threshold day. I didn't mind it being a bit of
- 1:30:47a lighter day anyway. And so Thursday I did the the
- 1:30:51morning threshold. So yeah, same as your cell
- 1:30:54phone, 4 by 6 minutes with a one minute jog.
- 1:30:56I did try and back off the one minute a little bit because I
- 1:30:58remember you saying like, you know, the purpose of that one
- 1:31:01minute is sort of just to make sure you're keeping everything
- 1:31:04in control. So I haven't got the lactate
- 1:31:05monitor out. I need to chat to, to RAF and
- 1:31:08and do it just to make sure it is as per what we expect it to
- 1:31:11be. But yeah, everything felt, felt
- 1:31:14fine. And then Thursday night, it was
- 1:31:17a cracking night down lakeside at Lake Munga.
- 1:31:20It was like dead still, cool, crisp.
- 1:31:23Josh was there. Josh had just got his hands on
- 1:31:25some bicarb, the bicarb mix. So he'd taken that before the,
- 1:31:30the session. So I was a bit nervous for him
- 1:31:32and his bowel movements. But he, he held it together,
- 1:31:35which was which was good. And we, yeah, we had 4 by 5
- 1:31:38minutes on, 2 minutes off. So 5 minutes.
- 1:31:41That's threshold 2 minute float. And that felt and, and I had
- 1:31:45Luke with me that night. And so Luke was doing, yeah,
- 1:31:49sorry. So I said to him, should we do
- 1:31:51310 paces? Yeah, no worries.
- 1:31:53And then he sat behind me for about two minutes and then
- 1:31:56proceeded to go in front and stayed in front of us and I
- 1:32:00think we ran. So we went three O 7 for the
- 1:32:02first Rep, three O 5 for the next Rep.
- 1:32:05Yeah, three O 5 for every Rep after that.
- 1:32:08But actually felt not too bad, like it felt it was, yeah, it
- 1:32:11was a nice night and I didn't feel too bad, which was Good
- 1:32:14Friday, too easy jogs in and out of the office.
- 1:32:17And then into Saturday morning session, which it was a bit of a
- 1:32:20strange session because we had five by a mile, No 6 by a mile
- 1:32:26around Lake Munga. And when I was doing those 5
- 1:32:30minute reps, I was running about a mile.
- 1:32:32And so I'm like, I think I'm just running more miles around
- 1:32:34Lake Munga. So this one was with static
- 1:32:36recovery, so like 90 seconds sort of, you know, that walk,
- 1:32:39jog, shuffle. And yeah, I felt pretty trash to
- 1:32:43be honest, on Saturday, Saturday morning.
- 1:32:47But yeah, it was 310307308308308306.
- 1:32:51So a little bit slower than what I was doing those 5 minute reps
- 1:32:55in, but that sounds a bit right. Like that sounds weird out
- 1:32:58nearly I think so I. Think that's felt better.
- 1:33:01Yeah. So.
- 1:33:03Yeah. So look, you know, got it done,
- 1:33:05got out for two hours. I meant to run a little bit
- 1:33:07further today but to get to swimming lessons so I ran two
- 1:33:11hours this morning. Overall just under 160 KS, so
- 1:33:15good week. Yeah.
- 1:33:17And do you have anything coming up in the near future or like
- 1:33:21there's? There's that shit.
- 1:33:22You remember the Shelly 10K you did last year?
- 1:33:24Or the one I have the course? Records for yeah.
- 1:33:28Wow, I'll go on that in two weeks.
- 1:33:29So I shouldn't have said it. I shouldn't.
- 1:33:31Have said it. It's going.
- 1:33:34What did you get out of interest?
- 1:33:36I think it was just. Something 30, yeah.
- 1:33:42So yeah, so now I've got that coming up maybe in a couple of
- 1:33:44weeks and then a couple of weeks after that is the Perth half as
- 1:33:47well. So that might be a bit of a hit
- 1:33:49out ahead of the half. Nice.
- 1:33:51Where is. That 10K Dean, is it around the
- 1:33:53river? Yeah.
- 1:33:54It's that Shelley. Foreshore area, so it's just
- 1:33:575K's. It's not quite out and back,
- 1:33:59annoyingly. It should be out and back, but
- 1:34:00it sort of goes out for what, 3 1/2 K maybe, yeah.
- 1:34:04Does AU turn? It's all on footpath and then
- 1:34:06you do AU turn, then you run that direction for 5K.
- 1:34:10So you go past the start finish for AK and 1/2 or K and then
- 1:34:13turn back and yeah, run back along the path.
- 1:34:17We've done some marathon workouts there in the past.
- 1:34:20I don't know if we've done any in very recent history, but it's
- 1:34:23fairly flat and it just sort of follows the part of this one
- 1:34:27river. Any cash up for?
- 1:34:28Grabs there. No, it's just a.
- 1:34:31Just your local marathon club run, I think.
- 1:34:35Yeah, that's probably the biggest carrot now.
- 1:34:37So it's shouldn't have said anything.
- 1:34:40No. But yeah, that's the week.
- 1:34:43Good. Do you?
- 1:34:44Want to? Give a little update or what's
- 1:34:46your plan? How's it being back in good back
- 1:34:49in Perth? Like, go on then I'll say.
- 1:34:51Something but conscious not to repeat myself for the 7th week
- 1:34:54running. But yeah, I got back to Perth on
- 1:34:58Wednesday evening so actually didn't feel too bad jet lag wise
- 1:35:02on Thursday. But then it seems to have got
- 1:35:05increasingly worse. So like yesterday I was just
- 1:35:07wiped out, was in bed like in the afternoon.
- 1:35:09I was like, oh, what you doing? Just making it worse for
- 1:35:12yourself. But physically just couldn't.
- 1:35:15But the good thing is I've been waking up at like, well, I mean,
- 1:35:19it's not that good. I've been waking up at 4:00 AM.
- 1:35:21So I've just been going in the cross training in the gym before
- 1:35:26like the day started. So I know that that's sorted and
- 1:35:30the plan is for next week, Monday to Sunday, just keep
- 1:35:34cross training and keep doing the actual physio, which I
- 1:35:38hadn't really been doing and the rehab, the strengthening.
- 1:35:42And then on, on the Monday after I'm booked in with the physio to
- 1:35:46kind of do an assessment. And potentially what if it's not
- 1:35:50any better in terms of pain, then we'll just get a cortisone
- 1:35:54to ramp up the return essentially.
- 1:35:57Because I'm just fucking sick of it now and it feels like I have
- 1:36:01been patient. Maybe I haven't done like the
- 1:36:03all the rehab I should have done but I literally have deloaded
- 1:36:06for six weeks straight with like 0 running so and then if I put
- 1:36:11two weeks worth of strength and rehab into it and still no signs
- 1:36:14of improvement, then I feel like the only thing I'm left with is
- 1:36:17to just get this injection and hope that that does the trick.
- 1:36:20No, at least like you have a. Plan in place, like that's the
- 1:36:23main thing now you can sort of get that structure back into
- 1:36:25your life because when you're away, it's so hard to like do
- 1:36:28the gym, do the recovery when you're just it's go, go, go, go.
- 1:36:32So at least you can sort of like sort of get back on the horse.
- 1:36:35Yeah. And.
- 1:36:36Like me and you spoke about last week, maybe being at home wasn't
- 1:36:39the environment for me to be motivated to run and stuff
- 1:36:42anyway, so it was easy, but in being back in Perth, like it
- 1:36:45just makes me so hungry to get back training and stuff.
- 1:36:49So yeah, you do the world of good.
- 1:36:50Like your go go go there for like the last nearly two years.
- 1:36:54So like the break, it's so needed total reset back hungry
- 1:36:59earth than ever. That's the one.
- 1:37:03And I think we can. What's the weather?
- 1:37:06I'm looking for shit YouTube Diaries.
- 1:37:09We we can assign that to run to Japan for this week, I think,
- 1:37:13can't we? Yeah, seeing as we're we're
- 1:37:15running long in the episode recording already.
- 1:37:17Go watch his new video. About his latest announcement
- 1:37:20about his brand deal and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:37:22Or his? His yeah or his early?
- 1:37:26Videos. Yeah, and AS.
- 1:37:28Peeled to the Gold Coast 1. No, guys.
- 1:37:31Please, I'm going to actually go back and watch that second one
- 1:37:34where he's in the altitude camp. It is so funny.
- 1:37:38Oh my God, just watch it. There's.
- 1:37:42Before we finish, there's a couple of things I wanted to
- 1:37:44mention about the pod and and the near future.
- 1:37:50Hopefully we've got another interview lined up in the next
- 1:37:52couple of weeks with a big name in Australian distance running.
- 1:37:58So eyes peeled for that. Really excited for that one.
- 1:38:02And secondly, I don't know what to say about this, but we're
- 1:38:05thinking about how we can bring the easy Double community
- 1:38:08together so that it's not just the podcast being recorded and
- 1:38:13put out and listeners can actually kind of contribute and
- 1:38:15we can kind of bring everyone together.
- 1:38:19So yeah, watch this space for that as well.
- 1:38:22And then do you guys have anything else to add?
- 1:38:24Nope, I did try and. Look.
- 1:38:26What's coming up in the next week in terms of like major
- 1:38:29racing, But based on what it has been in the past month or so, it
- 1:38:32looks like next weekend may be a little bit quiet.
- 1:38:35When's Monaco I. Think it must be the weekend?
- 1:38:37After OK, OK. Yeah, because there's going to
- 1:38:40be a little pretty soon now for because they'll be building up
- 1:38:43for that World champs in Tokyo. Yeah.
- 1:38:46When are the US? No, just looking now, when are
- 1:38:48the US trials? Oh yeah, that'll be good because
- 1:38:51that's always good to just watch.
- 1:38:52And and I like the drama with with those in terms of because
- 1:38:57it's literally if you're not top three, you don't make it you
- 1:39:02because you know, we were talking.
- 1:39:03Oh, did you see some of the articles around Grand Slam and
- 1:39:07athletes not getting paid? Yeah, that's crazy.
- 1:39:11Yeah. Yeah, Waisi shared me, shared
- 1:39:14some articles with us. It was like saying that that
- 1:39:18athletes have only been paid for the first the Jamaican league,
- 1:39:22but not since, which is crazy if that's the case.
- 1:39:27But I think what that sort of Grand Slam made lacked was like
- 1:39:30some of the you couldn't feel the drama.
- 1:39:32Whereas there's US trials, you feel the drama.
- 1:39:35You literally see the person come forth and they are gutted.
- 1:39:38And the person coming third is like, you know, like, yeah,
- 1:39:41you're racing for the pinnacles of your sport.
- 1:39:45It's sort of really good to watch.
- 1:39:47And they're like, the US athletes are so competitive.
- 1:39:50So it's like, I feel like that would be a good one to preview.
- 1:39:53So that's the end of July especially.
- 1:39:55Because throughout the season, like we've kind of got to know a
- 1:39:58few of the athletes and like they keep racing the same meets
- 1:40:01week on week, Aren't they the same guys are 10 and obviously
- 1:40:04build a bit of a storyline and background to it.
- 1:40:06Yeah, which? Which Speaking of, yeah, we
- 1:40:09shared dinner with that video during the week and talking
- 1:40:14YouTube Diaries of Jake and Hobbes Kessler, like one of the
- 1:40:19top American athletes running and you did you see that
- 1:40:21kilometre? You see the the time Crazy.
- 1:40:24That is so fast. Was it 214 that Jake 2:15?
- 1:40:29Two 15-6 or seven or something like you wouldn't do it on a
- 1:40:32bike. Them boys are moving 215 is so.
- 1:40:35Fast I was, I was 248. I was 200 meters behind them.
- 1:40:43I felt like I was moving all right, I wasn't terrible, but
- 1:40:46like, that's just so they're just and they look so good and
- 1:40:51then so, so how good did they look and how fast is that?
- 1:40:55Yet they were, they got completely dusted on overnight.
- 1:41:00So they they didn't feature neither Jake or Hobbs.
- 1:41:03Hobbs, Hobbs in the race. Yeah, yeah, he was in the
- 1:41:05middle. Somewhere as well, yeah.
- 1:41:07And so. Fair play to Cam.
- 1:41:09Hey, like Cam Mai. So in terms of like the next
- 1:41:12young talent, so Cam is, was he 1819?
- 1:41:16And I think that Laros is maybe a year or two older than him,
- 1:41:20right. Yeah.
- 1:41:22So he's sort of just that. Next.
- 1:41:24He's sort of that next sort of tier of progression.
- 1:41:28So cool to see those like those young kids sort of beating these
- 1:41:32guys that had like, there's so many guys running so fast that
- 1:41:36yeah, I think you sort of forget just how special that Bauman
- 1:41:41race was, don't you? When you see like Wyman and that
- 1:41:43running 215 and getting completely dusted, they run the
- 1:41:46risk. Well.
- 1:41:48Yeah, maybe they did because that, that, that 215 seems more
- 1:41:51special than what did they run 24348?
- 1:41:55I tried. To do the conversion of the mile
- 1:41:57time, Laros is 345 high to 1500 meter time to get some context
- 1:42:03and it says it comes like the exact conversion is 330.6, but
- 1:42:08then obviously you're probably running slightly quicker because
- 1:42:12it's 110 meters shorter, so maybe it's 329 high.
- 1:42:16So it's not actually that fast, it's just the way that he won it
- 1:42:21and the field of guys that he beat.
- 1:42:23So like Cam's time, although he finished quite high up by the
- 1:42:274th or 5th, I was watching because he was racing Cole
- 1:42:31Hocker coming up the last 100 meters and he's run 347
- 1:42:36something maybe, but doesn't actually come up as APB for Cam.
- 1:42:40So he's actually ran quicker than that before.
- 1:42:42Yeah, I don't even it. Didn't even come up as the
- 1:42:44season's best. So yeah, yeah, that's sort of
- 1:42:47where where it stacked up in terms of just raw time.
- 1:42:50Yeah, as soon as you mentioned. The US then we forgot to mention
- 1:42:55there was a 10,000 meters at the pre classic meet and obviously
- 1:42:58Connor Manson was in it last week and I said perhaps American
- 1:43:02record but it didn't go too well.
- 1:43:04I couldn't find. I tried to find a video of that
- 1:43:06was that it was prior to. Hey, this wasn't prior to the
- 1:43:10main, main show. Yeah, it was a couple hours.
- 1:43:12Earlier on just seeing that. Lad who won it as the Ethiopian.
- 1:43:17He looks like 18. He ran in what, 20?
- 1:43:19640, yeah. That's so hard to comprehend
- 1:43:23coming so far. Back-to-back 13. 20s yeah, I
- 1:43:26think it's. When you say.
- 1:43:28That it's even weirder yeah, because there's there's so many
- 1:43:32like professional athletes who run often 1315 thirteen 20s and
- 1:43:37then these African guys are literally double in it for 10K.
- 1:43:40But sure your man. Keep Limo with the half marathon
- 1:43:43record. He was doing outrageous 5K
- 1:43:46splits as well for like 21 kilometres.
- 1:43:49Yeah he was doing 13 mid as well.
- 1:43:51It's crazy. I.
- 1:43:55Went to Jake. Yeah, there was.
- 1:43:57AB race in the mile as well at the pre classic meet and the guy
- 1:44:02won in 348 in AB race yeah saw that he's.
- 1:44:06A jet though that he's that's it's one of the collisions
- 1:44:09Strand is. It I think, yeah, Ethan.
- 1:44:12Stranded. Who's his other He's got there's
- 1:44:15another guy that runs for the same college.
- 1:44:17There's two of them that are just Parker Wolf.
- 1:44:20Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, those guys are just absolute weapons.
- 1:44:23And then I think Adam Spencer was in that race as well, wasn't
- 1:44:26he? Yeah, he was 4th and.
- 1:44:27Maybe in 350 yeah so far the the depth right now is insane Yeah
- 1:44:33you. Can't get your your fourth in
- 1:44:36the Bay Race running 350? There's hope for us.
- 1:44:39We just. We.
- 1:44:40Just need to hit that like just just waiting for that.
- 1:44:47Like 3 minute breakthrough on that 3K there now and just go
- 1:44:56out in like 50 fours and see if you can hang on.
- 1:45:02I. Genuinely don't think I could
- 1:45:04run one. No, no, actually I couldn't run
- 1:45:07one. There's no even thinking about
- 1:45:08it. Like I actually I I've never, I
- 1:45:10don't think I've broken 61 for a freaking 400, never mind.
- 1:45:14No, no, I think I might wait on like 60 nines or something like
- 1:45:17that.
