- 0:43Speaker 1: Do you think Bill is possibly taking in his own
- 0:45Speaker 1: way to get a top draft pick along with revamping
- 0:48Speaker 1: the team for the near future. Is he's going about
- 0:51Speaker 1: at all wrong? I got to tell the defense to right,
- 0:52Speaker 1: you can stop winning. I come from, you know, as
- 0:54Speaker 1: a I talked about my hockey career, you know, being
- 0:56Speaker 1: an offensive defenseman. Move. Well, if the Colts can hire
- 1:00Speaker 1: of Saturday as a headquarter, can we hire Tom Brady
- 1:02Speaker 1: as our offensive coordinator. Friend's really determined to get Brady back. Anyway.
- 1:06Speaker 1: There's a trend going on right now where offenses are
- 1:09Speaker 1: kind of being stifled a little bit. And I'm just
- 1:11Speaker 1: wondering if that's happening to like the Patrick Mahomes of
- 1:14Speaker 1: the world. It's not happening to him, by the way.
- 1:17Speaker 1: He would not be a good example. Their production is
- 1:20Speaker 1: down in addition to other teams, you know, but it's
- 1:24Speaker 1: not that's my point. We don't pick the teams that
- 1:26Speaker 1: that are the most explosive. No, I am picking the
- 1:29Speaker 1: teams are the most Anybody can get stopped for one game.
- 1:31Speaker 1: There's a trend going on right now, and I don't
- 1:33Speaker 1: know what it is. You know, Paul didn't allow me
- 1:36Speaker 1: to finish. I mean, certainly, the way Bill was talking
- 1:39Speaker 1: up Aaron Rodgers, I can see where you would think that.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, I'm sorry what he's saying two
- 1:44Speaker 1: years Rogers coming here next year, and you don't know
- 1:47Speaker 1: that that whether that'll happen or not. Yeah, okay, I'll Clara,
- 1:50Speaker 1: you won't. This is Patriot's Unfiltered fueled by Duncan. All right,
- 1:57Speaker 1: welcome the Patriots Unfiltered. It's Wednesday here at Gillette Stadium,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and we got a big crew. We got deuced, we
- 2:03Speaker 1: got Evan, we got Evan fresh from film review. I'm assuming,
- 2:07Speaker 1: Oh yeah, where we're gonna We're counting on you to
- 2:10Speaker 1: have all the answers for the bye here, Alex is here,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Paul's here, myself, Matt's in the booth. So it's a
- 2:18Speaker 1: Wednesday show before the bye. Yeah, late practice today, so
- 2:21Speaker 1: one fifteen Evan Old duck out. So maybe we'll get
- 2:24Speaker 1: some some interesting news towards the end of the show.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Maybe some guys are back. I don't know, I'm speculating,
- 2:29Speaker 1: so maybe, But it doesn't really mean anything because it's
- 2:32Speaker 1: probably a walkthrough, right, But I think to me the
- 2:36Speaker 1: topic is what's gone on the last couple of days
- 2:40Speaker 1: in terms of Mark Daniels making some news about overhearing
- 2:45Speaker 1: offensive players in the locker room, talking about how the
- 2:48Speaker 1: Colts knew, you know what plays, you know, calling out plays,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and then Bill admitting yesterday that he sees the same thing.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Not only that, but go back to the Ravens game
- 3:00Speaker 1: and they were doing it too well. Jetzt jetz Yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, so that's mildly surprising because Bill, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: it almost seemed like it was one of those questions
- 3:12Speaker 1: that he was happy was asked. You know, So I
- 3:15Speaker 1: want to talk about that. Um, you know, I also
- 3:19Speaker 1: want to talk about and I forgot what it was.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It was. It was along those It was an answer
- 3:28Speaker 1: also Bill said about you know what he you know,
- 3:30Speaker 1: self scouting over the buy and usually he doesn't go
- 3:34Speaker 1: into specifics about what, but he says, yeah, we need
- 3:37Speaker 1: to make some scheme adjustments. Those were his exact words,
- 3:41Speaker 1: you know, but he never has said that in the past,
- 3:45Speaker 1: you know, like getting that specific. Now, of course we
- 3:47Speaker 1: don't know what those adjustments are, and you know what
- 3:50Speaker 1: he's but just the mere fact that he said, yeah,
- 3:53Speaker 1: we're gonna be looking at some scheme adjustments, it is
- 3:56Speaker 1: telling badness. Yeah that you know, this is you know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: making this offense better is job number one during this
- 4:06Speaker 1: by I thought there were some good questions yesterday in
- 4:08Speaker 1: the press conference. I mean, I just the way Mark
- 4:10Speaker 1: Daniels asked it and got a good response. I liked
- 4:13Speaker 1: how Andrew Callahan asked the last question of you know,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I mean it seems like he's speaking Bill a little
- 4:18Speaker 1: bit understanding every quarterback is different, every play is different.
- 4:20Speaker 1: But you know, I thought I just thought that was
- 4:22Speaker 1: interesting the way Bill, And again this is probably one
- 4:25Speaker 1: of those kind of usual answers you get out of him.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But I just I still found it interesting. I think
- 4:30Speaker 1: the best thing we can do, just in terms of
- 4:31Speaker 1: overall production is more efficiency as a unit, every single
- 4:34Speaker 1: person making sure that their execution is as good as
- 4:36Speaker 1: it can be on the play, and we'll have more
- 4:38Speaker 1: positive plays, more positive results, less long yardage, more points.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That's kind of the focus for us this week. I
- 4:43Speaker 1: know that that's well, very general, right, But at the
- 4:46Speaker 1: same time, I think that in there there's some things acknowledging,
- 4:49Speaker 1: trouble moving the ball, trouble scoring points, not consistent enough,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and I mean that's the story of the week. Everybody's
- 4:54Speaker 1: trying to figure out what's the thing. And I think
- 4:57Speaker 1: the people who are reasonable and who study it and
- 4:59Speaker 1: watch it, I'll kind of come to the same conclusion
- 5:01Speaker 1: that it's all broken. It's all broken, and you don't
- 5:04Speaker 1: really know where to start. So but you know, I'm wondering,
- 5:07Speaker 1: like can scheme adjustments be enough? You know, like at
- 5:11Speaker 1: some point you just got to have better players, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 1: And it's lay better than this, though, you know. I mean,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I think they're not playing up to even the talent
- 5:19Speaker 1: that they have. I think, so except for maybe the
- 5:21Speaker 1: offensive line. I'm not sure about what's going on there,
- 5:23Speaker 1: but I really think that the pieces around mac I
- 5:26Speaker 1: still contend they're good enough. They're good enough, you know.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So I don't know what Bill's referring to. Maybe Evan,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you have some ideas of what you I know that
- 5:38Speaker 1: you're big RPO. You want more RPOs, right, don't even
- 5:42Speaker 1: get me started on that yet, And that's like, I
- 5:46Speaker 1: don't even know. Look. I said to Mike earlier when
- 5:49Speaker 1: I got in for the day that the only way
- 5:51Speaker 1: I can properly surmize all of this is to put
- 5:54Speaker 1: it in micro and macro level issues, right because there's
- 5:57Speaker 1: so many issues going on with this offense, and it's
- 6:00Speaker 1: difficult to list them all, and we don't have the
- 6:03Speaker 1: time right now to list all of them and get
- 6:05Speaker 1: into all the details. So I think that on a
- 6:08Speaker 1: micro level, their play to play execution certainly can be
- 6:11Speaker 1: a lot better just based off of what they are running,
- 6:14Speaker 1: whether it's sound or not, Like they could do a
- 6:17Speaker 1: better job of going out there and actually executing the place. Certainly,
- 6:21Speaker 1: the offensive line needs to block better. That is always
- 6:25Speaker 1: number one on a lot of offenses. That struggle is
- 6:27Speaker 1: poor offensive line play so whether it's running the football
- 6:31Speaker 1: passing the football, they're just not getting kiss consistent enough
- 6:34Speaker 1: blocking right now to do anything consistently. Well, I'd say
- 6:38Speaker 1: the second thing that you see is more about timing
- 6:41Speaker 1: with the passing game, route spacing, timing. You know, Mac
- 6:45Speaker 1: Jones hits his back foot in wait in sacked right, Like,
- 6:52Speaker 1: how many times are we going to see that? Now?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Some of that comes down to processing and where the
- 6:57Speaker 1: quarterback is looking and things like that. But I think
- 6:59Speaker 1: what they're he've done as they've tried to devise an
- 7:03Speaker 1: offense to get the ball out quicker because they know
- 7:05Speaker 1: their offensive line is a problem. But the issue is
- 7:08Speaker 1: that the routes that they are running are not hitting quickly.
- 7:11Speaker 1: So you have guys breaking routes off at eight twelve
- 7:14Speaker 1: yards down the field when Mac is three step drops,
- 7:17Speaker 1: so he's three step drop, He's looking around, He's like,
- 7:19Speaker 1: their backs are to me, where am I supposed to
- 7:21Speaker 1: go with the football right now? So there's a lot
- 7:23Speaker 1: of that type of it's out of sync right where
- 7:26Speaker 1: the drops, the protection and the routes are not congealed.
- 7:31Speaker 1: They're not right, They're not at the same level. And
- 7:36Speaker 1: I know Greg Madard I thought did a good job
- 7:37Speaker 1: of explaining how they used to do this, which was,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you know, Josh McDaniels would devise a game plan with
- 7:44Speaker 1: the route combinations that they thought would work against the
- 7:47Speaker 1: defense they were facing. So last week they're facing Gus Bradley,
- 7:50Speaker 1: so it's probably going to be a lot of Cover
- 7:52Speaker 1: three beaters. Right, He's a Seattle three guy, so it's
- 7:54Speaker 1: a lot of Cover three stuff. Then Josh McDaniels would
- 7:57Speaker 1: go to Dante Scarnekia and say, these are the core
- 8:01Speaker 1: concepts that we would like to run this week. How
- 8:03Speaker 1: are we going to protect the quarterback? And they would
- 8:06Speaker 1: together then devise how many you know steps in a
- 8:09Speaker 1: drop Tom Brady's going to take? Is it five man protect?
- 8:12Speaker 1: Is it six man protect? Has the running back and
- 8:15Speaker 1: come into the equation if it's a blitz and all
- 8:17Speaker 1: these other details of the passing play. There's a disconnect
- 8:23Speaker 1: right now going on with the timing of the offense.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I think those are all like micro issues that they
- 8:27Speaker 1: might be able to iron out during the bye week
- 8:30Speaker 1: and get those things better than what they were last week.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I think the macro issue is though mac Jones is
- 8:37Speaker 1: processing and his internal clock is completely screwed up at
- 8:42Speaker 1: this point. And the second thing I would say is
- 8:45Speaker 1: that the design of the offense from a macro level
- 8:49Speaker 1: point of view is elementary. Yeah, and that is a
- 8:53Speaker 1: really big concern. Now, you mentioned that Mark Daniel's great
- 8:57Speaker 1: reporting by him not trying to take away anything from
- 8:59Speaker 1: the reporting, but stuff like linebackers, veteran linebackers like C. J.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Mosley and Shack Leonard calling out plays and things like
- 9:07Speaker 1: that is not super uncommon. Well, I was having time
- 9:11Speaker 1: like if I was a defensive player and I'm facing
- 9:14Speaker 1: a young quarterback in particular, even if I don't know
- 9:17Speaker 1: the play call, call something out and get the quarterback thinking,
- 9:21Speaker 1: you know, like what does he know or what he does?
- 9:24Speaker 1: He has no idea. But regardless whether I'm right or wrong,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm just putting something into the quarterback's head like I
- 9:31Speaker 1: know something, and you know, you're effing with them. That's
- 9:34Speaker 1: all they're doing that. I was going to leave that
- 9:36Speaker 1: to after because I know Evan wanted to go over
- 9:38Speaker 1: the offense and whatnot. I took Bill's comment yesterday. I mean,
- 9:43Speaker 1: people make fun of me all the time, they call
- 9:45Speaker 1: me a contrarian. I'm really not a contrarian. I just
- 9:48Speaker 1: don't always see things exactly the same way, right, you
- 9:51Speaker 1: see things contrary to whatever? No, I don't. It's it's
- 9:56Speaker 1: I think Evan just said it perfectly. I think what
- 9:58Speaker 1: Bill was trying to say yesterday was like, yeah, we
- 10:00Speaker 1: saw two veteran middle linebackers. That that happens all the time. Yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 1: that's what he was trying to say. Like I think
- 10:07Speaker 1: he was like people were like, was he taking a
- 10:09Speaker 1: shot at Patricia? And I think it was exactly the opposite.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I said this yesterday on the show because because Mike
- 10:16Speaker 1: read that quote off Twitter yesterday, off of Evans tweet
- 10:21Speaker 1: from the press conference, and we talked about it, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: I said, I think there's another example of he's he's
- 10:26Speaker 1: backing up, like he's trying to say, like, we played
- 10:29Speaker 1: good defenses the last couple of weeks with guys that
- 10:31Speaker 1: know what they're doing, and it makes it a little
- 10:33Speaker 1: bit more challenging. So maybe we had some young, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 1: some changing moving parts on the offensive line. That's why
- 10:40Speaker 1: you know we struggled so much. You know, it won't
- 10:43Speaker 1: always be like that. I think he was kind of
- 10:45Speaker 1: diffusing it a little. Actually. I think that was its intense. Now,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I don't think. I think nothing could be further from
- 10:50Speaker 1: the truth than him taking a shot at Patricia yesterday
- 10:53Speaker 1: with that comment. And that's the way it was sort
- 10:55Speaker 1: of portrayed on the direction everybody wants to go that
- 10:58Speaker 1: that said, well, this offense is so simple and easy
- 11:00Speaker 1: to understand that the other team is just sitting there
- 11:03Speaker 1: picking it up exactly and I see it too, right,
- 11:05Speaker 1: But what he was saying that he saw was, yeah,
- 11:08Speaker 1: that recognition by the other defensive player, and yeah, so
- 11:12Speaker 1: it could be as simple as that. It really could.
- 11:14Speaker 1: But the fact that Bill like welcomed the question, yeah right,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, he didn't brush it off. I think that's
- 11:21Speaker 1: what got everybody going. And I think maybe, you know,
- 11:24Speaker 1: like if Mark Daniels is true, and I guess other
- 11:26Speaker 1: report has heard it too, you know, the offensive players
- 11:29Speaker 1: saying it in the locker room, well, that might have
- 11:31Speaker 1: got back to Bill and maybe he had a talk
- 11:33Speaker 1: with them it said, guys, you know, like, what are
- 11:36Speaker 1: you worried about? You know, this is something that every team,
- 11:38Speaker 1: you know, it's not they don't know our plays. You know,
- 11:41Speaker 1: maybe he had a talk with them and then welcome
- 11:44Speaker 1: the questions so that he could diffuse it publicly as well.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I'd love to know what the context
- 11:48Speaker 1: was with how the players were saying it, because I
- 11:51Speaker 1: there's some gray area there of players being impressed with
- 11:55Speaker 1: the defensive players doing that. Then there's another side of them.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Context could have been like can you believe they knew
- 12:01Speaker 1: what we were doing the whole time? Like, there's two
- 12:02Speaker 1: different sides of it, you know, those are the two
- 12:04Speaker 1: sides of Wow, you know, these guys were tough, but
- 12:07Speaker 1: you know, I get what people were pushing. Oh yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 1: so like you know so, and then then it's up
- 12:12Speaker 1: to Bill to say, they're good defensive players. That's what's
- 12:16Speaker 1: gonna happen when you play against good defensive players. So
- 12:20Speaker 1: stop throwing people under the bus. And it happens all
- 12:23Speaker 1: the time. Yeah, stop pointing fingers. You've got to have
- 12:26Speaker 1: counters to it too, you know, like yeah, And he
- 12:28Speaker 1: said that they did have a few plays where they
- 12:30Speaker 1: tried to Jack Lenard thought he saw what he saw
- 12:33Speaker 1: and thought he knew where where he was going, and
- 12:34Speaker 1: they tried to hit him. I don't know if they
- 12:36Speaker 1: that actually worked. And some people asked me, oh, well,
- 12:39Speaker 1: where are the examples of those plays. I'm not in
- 12:41Speaker 1: the huddle, so I don't know what I could have been.
- 12:43Speaker 1: The hunter Henry played down the scene. It could have
- 12:45Speaker 1: been the screen shoot. I mean, yeah, Johnny the first
- 12:49Speaker 1: John finally called play action after eight straight runs on
- 12:51Speaker 1: the first down. But yeah, that's like, you know, these
- 12:55Speaker 1: things happen all the time. And the examples that I
- 12:57Speaker 1: put up on Twitter last night, Dante high Tower was notorious,
- 13:01Speaker 1: notorious for calling out offenses plays based off of film study, formation,
- 13:06Speaker 1: down and distance, things like that. And I remember in
- 13:09Speaker 1: twenty nineteen that open Air against Pittsburgh, Patrick Chung made
- 13:12Speaker 1: a big pass breakup on third down and he said, yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: high Tower told me the route before the play, you know.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And you see on the broadcast of the of the
- 13:20Speaker 1: game that high Tower points to Patrick Chung and says, hey,
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know he's running a stick route here. And then
- 13:25Speaker 1: sure enough, the receiver runs a sticker out, Patrick Chung
- 13:27Speaker 1: breaks it up and they punt the football right. You know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: those are things that happen every single week, and high
- 13:33Speaker 1: Tower was notorious for it. Stefan Gilmour was really good
- 13:36Speaker 1: at anticipating routes that receivers were going to run based
- 13:39Speaker 1: off of alignment, you know, different things that they're doing.
- 13:43Speaker 1: So this is something that smart, good defensive players do
- 13:46Speaker 1: all the time. If I was out there on defense,
- 13:49Speaker 1: i'd do it just like I said, screw with them. Yeah,
- 13:51Speaker 1: screw with them, might be screwed with your own defense.
- 13:53Speaker 1: They'll fresh. Oh, but like let them know, let them know,
- 13:55Speaker 1: don't listen to them. Don't listen to me. I'm gonna
- 13:59Speaker 1: be screwing with them. You know, draw what the hell
- 14:02Speaker 1: friend spend sport time trying to screw people? Oh yeah,
- 14:05Speaker 1: it's it's all. It's all the mental chess, not checkers, right,
- 14:10Speaker 1: you know. It's another thing. Can we talk about um
- 14:12Speaker 1: so dan Orlovski? I mean he's you know you really
- 14:15Speaker 1: like he's been tweeting. Well, I want to I want
- 14:18Speaker 1: to talk about it first. My first thing is like, look,
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm all here for like you want to put a
- 14:21Speaker 1: thing up pointing out that the offense isn't coordinated and
- 14:23Speaker 1: you know, isn't isn't it great? It's great? But like
- 14:26Speaker 1: why did he use the one where Kendrick Bourne's open?
- 14:28Speaker 1: Like I like, and I know chat, H'm like tweeting
- 14:30Speaker 1: about this thing too him, Like I'm all for the example,
- 14:33Speaker 1: but like, do you have to pick one where Kendrick
- 14:35Speaker 1: Bourne's wide open and Mac doesn't even see him for
- 14:37Speaker 1: the first down? Like, I get the general point. I'm
- 14:39Speaker 1: not like saying that, but it just made me wonder.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I kind of put my Pirolo hat on a little
- 14:42Speaker 1: bit and I was Likesky played for the Lions, Detroit
- 14:47Speaker 1: hates Matt Patrician. Now, is that is there some kind
- 14:49Speaker 1: of because it just it seems almost to me like
- 14:51Speaker 1: you're going overboard to try to he grows up, girls
- 14:56Speaker 1: up and he grows I'm so proud of you, but
- 14:59Speaker 1: that but it just seemed to much and I'm like, like,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I'm sure there are other clips he could have found
- 15:03Speaker 1: that would have perfectly illustrated. I mean, Evan and I
- 15:04Speaker 1: got in a big discussion this morning about, you know,
- 15:06Speaker 1: feeling like guys weren't really running rout. It's hard that,
- 15:09Speaker 1: you know, Like Evan said, Evan, Mac gets to the drop,
- 15:12Speaker 1: he's there and nobody's even looking at him. And that
- 15:14Speaker 1: was the case on that play. But again, there was
- 15:16Speaker 1: Kendrick Bourne wide open right in the middle for a
- 15:19Speaker 1: first down. So I don't know, I just I'm kind
- 15:21Speaker 1: of like Demolowski. I'm all for it, but can just
- 15:23Speaker 1: find better examples, Like, yeah, it just seems like too
- 15:28Speaker 1: much to me, Like you're going overboard to kill and
- 15:30Speaker 1: and believe me, I think this is well worth analyzing
- 15:33Speaker 1: and pointing out things. But if he really has been
- 15:35Speaker 1: the Patriots like biggest hater this season, it feels like
- 15:38Speaker 1: the lack of full field progressions from mac Jones where
- 15:42Speaker 1: I can see him go through even just like the
- 15:46Speaker 1: progression on the same side of the field, Like we're
- 15:48Speaker 1: not even talking about going from left to right or
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, you start in the middle of the field
- 15:52Speaker 1: and you're going to the sideline. We're just talking about
- 15:55Speaker 1: reading out a three man route combination on the right
- 15:58Speaker 1: side of the field, like the example that Dan Orlovsky
- 16:01Speaker 1: gave and Mike is talking about. He's just staring down
- 16:04Speaker 1: the field at Tykwon Thoron, trying to see if Taykwon
- 16:07Speaker 1: Thornton is going to separate from Stefan Gilmour who has
- 16:10Speaker 1: him in an absolute straight jacket and is like not
- 16:12Speaker 1: gonna let go right, you know, like there's no he
- 16:15Speaker 1: is not open. But instead of coming off that read
- 16:19Speaker 1: and getting to the other side of the field, where
- 16:21Speaker 1: he's got three receivers, one of them is open for
- 16:23Speaker 1: the first down, and Kendrick Bourne he just sticks on
- 16:25Speaker 1: it and he holds the ball and he holds the
- 16:27Speaker 1: ball and then he's like, oh, shoot, I gotta get
- 16:30Speaker 1: the ball out, Like where am I going with it?
- 16:32Speaker 1: He ends up forcing the ball to Ormandre Stevenson on
- 16:34Speaker 1: a checkdown like falls in complete. There was a play
- 16:37Speaker 1: earlier in the game where they just want him to
- 16:39Speaker 1: read out a sale concept like it's three receivers, right,
- 16:42Speaker 1: it's three, it's a go route, a corner route, and
- 16:44Speaker 1: a flat route, and they just want him to read
- 16:46Speaker 1: it out and Hunter Henry is open on the checkdown.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Is it's third and long, it's probably not going to
- 16:51Speaker 1: pick up a first down, But the right quarterback play
- 16:53Speaker 1: is just to throw the ball right to Hunter Henry
- 16:55Speaker 1: on the checkdown and hope that your guy makes somebody
- 16:58Speaker 1: miss and picks up the first down. And instead he
- 17:01Speaker 1: takes a sack. He just doesn't see it. He tries
- 17:04Speaker 1: to leave the pocket and he takes a sack. So
- 17:06Speaker 1: these are the progression things, or you know. I asked
- 17:09Speaker 1: him after the game about his eyes being in the
- 17:12Speaker 1: right place and his eyes starting in the right place
- 17:14Speaker 1: on a play and things like that, and these are
- 17:16Speaker 1: just issues that he was not having last year. These
- 17:19Speaker 1: are issues he'd never had at Alabama, you know, Like
- 17:22Speaker 1: these are just things mentally processing things where he's staring
- 17:25Speaker 1: down receivers, he's not coming off covered reads, he's not
- 17:29Speaker 1: reading the full field. Like it's just not like this season.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I mean, I think the biggest thing that you look
- 17:37Speaker 1: at it in the buy and you talk about scheme adjustments,
- 17:40Speaker 1: not all of it is under center. Not all of
- 17:42Speaker 1: his issues are coming under center. But we have was
- 17:45Speaker 1: he started twenty four games. Now we have a twenty
- 17:48Speaker 1: four game sample size of Mac Jones struggling throwing the
- 17:53Speaker 1: football from under center. He's thirty fifth out of forty
- 17:57Speaker 1: quarterbacks in passer rating from unders since the start of
- 18:01Speaker 1: last year. So he is not a good under center quarterback.
- 18:04Speaker 1: And I think early on in the season they knew that.
- 18:06Speaker 1: The first three weeks of the season he was only
- 18:08Speaker 1: throwing from under center nine percent of the time. But
- 18:10Speaker 1: then Bailey Zappy came in and they had all this
- 18:12Speaker 1: success with under centered play action with Bailey Zappy in
- 18:15Speaker 1: the game. And he comes back and now he's at
- 18:17Speaker 1: double the under center passing rate, So somewhere in there,
- 18:22Speaker 1: whether it was a Bailey Zappy effect or just they
- 18:25Speaker 1: thought they could beat the Jets and the Colts by
- 18:27Speaker 1: playing under center, or whatever the case may be, they
- 18:30Speaker 1: decided to pivot back to being an under centered team
- 18:32Speaker 1: and it just doesn't fit the quarterback. He just dy
- 18:34Speaker 1: statistics are just terrible. Do you think it's any way
- 18:37Speaker 1: advantageous that they're playing the Jets coming out of this
- 18:40Speaker 1: by a team they just play, so there's less prep
- 18:43Speaker 1: that they have to do for the team and they
- 18:45Speaker 1: can spend more time on whatever these scheme adjustments are,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know. I mean I would love to say yes,
- 18:52Speaker 1: but I just I feel like these team two teams
- 18:54Speaker 1: know each other really well. That's what I'm saying. So
- 18:56Speaker 1: you know, it's not all about like, oh, we got
- 18:58Speaker 1: we gotta learn the Jets. We know that. Y Yeah,
- 19:00Speaker 1: let's let's learn us right now. I mean, I think
- 19:02Speaker 1: that's that's a good point. But I mean, yeah, I
- 19:05Speaker 1: think the Jets are going to challenge all this stuff,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and I mean I don't want to. I don't know, Yeah,
- 19:08Speaker 1: that game too much. Paul's getting getting worried when I
- 19:10Speaker 1: keep pumping up this Jets game coming up in a
- 19:12Speaker 1: couple of weeks. But because you sound like you're Paul,
- 19:15Speaker 1: is this a lousible getting scared? Yeah, I'm scared. It's
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm scared. I'll tell you. You You know what it reminds
- 19:20Speaker 1: me of. And they're not there yet, the Jet. Like
- 19:23Speaker 1: you know what I feel about the Jets. I still
- 19:25Speaker 1: feel that way. They're not there yet. I know they did.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I don't believe in the quarterback. I think it's hard
- 19:32Speaker 1: to win. I think it's hard to win when you
- 19:35Speaker 1: have to play around your quarterback all the time. And
- 19:38Speaker 1: that's what the Jets sap to do right now. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: but it reminds me a little bit of the situation
- 19:43Speaker 1: last year with the two games and pretty close um
- 19:47Speaker 1: proximity with Buffalo, and Buffalo had to have left that
- 19:52Speaker 1: that Monday night game thinking how the hell do we
- 19:54Speaker 1: lose that game? To think about Poyer and the right
- 19:57Speaker 1: and everybody said they were pissed, are done, there's still
- 20:01Speaker 1: the bills blah blah blah blah blah. Right, and then
- 20:03Speaker 1: you didn't punt right right. The Jets can't do that.
- 20:07Speaker 1: They don't have the Bills talent. Like, I'm not saying
- 20:10Speaker 1: it's the same, but I think the mentality might be similar,
- 20:13Speaker 1: and they might just say, how did we lose this? Yeah? No,
- 20:15Speaker 1: I agree, how did we lose that game? All we
- 20:18Speaker 1: had to do is have our quarterback not completely hand
- 20:20Speaker 1: the game to the other team, and we would have won.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I don't think it'll be that easy because I think
- 20:26Speaker 1: the quarterback has a tendency to hand the game to
- 20:28Speaker 1: the other team, right, and Josh Allen doesn't do that right.
- 20:32Speaker 1: But if they can settle him down and play like
- 20:34Speaker 1: you did against Buffalo instead of the way you did
- 20:36Speaker 1: against the Patriots, they'll have an opportunity to win. I
- 20:39Speaker 1: think it's going to be a great game. I mean,
- 20:41Speaker 1: talk about, you know, a chess match, you know. I
- 20:46Speaker 1: think it's going to be a great game. Like what
- 20:48Speaker 1: are these teams gonna do? You know? I mean, I
- 20:50Speaker 1: think it's it's just in the context of the season two.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I mean, you know, the Patriots of things have changed
- 20:56Speaker 1: the last few years, but you've still been able to
- 20:57Speaker 1: beat the Jets, and you know, this is a game
- 21:00Speaker 1: where the Jets are gonna come in feeling like like
- 21:03Speaker 1: Paul laid out, and I think the Patriots, I think
- 21:06Speaker 1: the Patriots aware of that though. I mean I saw
- 21:07Speaker 1: some of the guys mentioning even in the post game
- 21:10Speaker 1: of you know, we got another big challenge with the
- 21:12Speaker 1: Jets right after the buy so um, but you look
- 21:14Speaker 1: at the buy issues that they've had in recent years,
- 21:17Speaker 1: kind of coming out playing flat that kind of stuff.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It's not going to cut it this year. And I
- 21:21Speaker 1: just think you lose this game, it sets the whole
- 21:23Speaker 1: tone for the last seven games. I mean, this is
- 21:25Speaker 1: this is I don't want to say it's a must win,
- 21:27Speaker 1: but I think if you want this to be an
- 21:28Speaker 1: interest a lot of must wins. Well, I mean it
- 21:32Speaker 1: could be wrong, Paul, but I don't think that. You know,
- 21:35Speaker 1: Bill's record coming out of buys is the same as
- 21:38Speaker 1: his overall record in terms of good Yeah, you know,
- 21:41Speaker 1: I don't. I don't have it off the top of
- 21:42Speaker 1: my head, but I remember we had I think it
- 21:45Speaker 1: was Rick and Louisville. Yeah, there was a stretch to
- 21:47Speaker 1: write in with that all the time. And he was
- 21:49Speaker 1: right because remember we pushed back on it a little
- 21:51Speaker 1: bit and we're like Seattle's kind of I think, like
- 21:53Speaker 1: Seattle twenty sixteen. I think it's deceiving because it's like
- 21:59Speaker 1: the whole thing, like the bye was blamed on last year,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and you know how my feeling on the by what
- 22:04Speaker 1: what changed after the bye? Well, you played teams with
- 22:06Speaker 1: a pulse and that's what That's what That's what happened.
- 22:09Speaker 1: And you know, like Seattle is the game after a bye, Well,
- 22:12Speaker 1: Seattle's a losable game, you know, Seattle and the and
- 22:15Speaker 1: the the prime of the Legion of Boom. That was
- 22:18Speaker 1: a tough game, right. That wasn't because you had a
- 22:21Speaker 1: bye that you lost that game. You could have lost
- 22:22Speaker 1: that game, But the narrative was, Oh, Bill Belichick coming
- 22:25Speaker 1: out of bye two weeks to plan for a team, right, yeah,
- 22:28Speaker 1: And that's wasn't always the case, you know. Yeah, And
- 22:30Speaker 1: that's I think to your point, Fred, it's not two
- 22:32Speaker 1: weeks to scheme up against your Jets yet, scheme up yourself, right.
- 22:36Speaker 1: We gotta we gotta get right first before we even
- 22:39Speaker 1: start looking at the Jets this week. But I think
- 22:41Speaker 1: even Biggers is being ready for the energy that that
- 22:44Speaker 1: team's going to bring in, and the and and the
- 22:45Speaker 1: fire that they're going to kind of play with. Feeling
- 22:48Speaker 1: about energy, I know, I think that they I think
- 22:50Speaker 1: Fred's right, I think they got to get themselves right,
- 22:53Speaker 1: you know, and all the things that Evan talked about,
- 22:55Speaker 1: you know, schematically with the offense, they have to figure
- 22:58Speaker 1: that out. Like I don't think that they like played
- 23:01Speaker 1: flat the other day some of the some of the
- 23:04Speaker 1: route effort was there. I don't know about that. Yeah,
- 23:07Speaker 1: I'm not talking about everything of running team that's gotten
- 23:13Speaker 1: a little too far. But I think a lot of
- 23:15Speaker 1: the times what I'm seeing with them on tape is
- 23:17Speaker 1: that if they know the ball's not coming to them, Okay,
- 23:22Speaker 1: there's a different level of effort in the route running
- 23:25Speaker 1: or something there. And I've heard that before, yeah, yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 1: And there's an issue there that if you're on the
- 23:31Speaker 1: back side and you just kind of jog through a
- 23:34Speaker 1: dig route or something like that, then like whatever. But
- 23:36Speaker 1: when you're on the primary progression and but you're a
- 23:41Speaker 1: clear out, you're just running a vertical to clear out
- 23:43Speaker 1: the coverage. If you half asked that, then you're in
- 23:47Speaker 1: trouble because you you're not making the space right, you're
- 23:50Speaker 1: not creating the space down the field for the receiver
- 23:52Speaker 1: that they're actually trying to get the football too. So
- 23:55Speaker 1: if there is there evidence of that on this team
- 23:57Speaker 1: this year. Yes, okay, but I'm not against against the Colts.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I'm not going to say that that's a season long problem.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But what you're seeing a lot of against you know,
- 24:06Speaker 1: a zone team like the Colts are, like the Jets.
- 24:08Speaker 1: All you're trying to do is clear guys out of
- 24:11Speaker 1: zones so that you can fill it in right. You
- 24:13Speaker 1: want to send a vertical route down the field, and
- 24:15Speaker 1: then you want a corner or an out or a
- 24:17Speaker 1: snag route like Hendrick Bourne ran on the play Mike
- 24:19Speaker 1: was talking about, like you're just trying to clear out
- 24:21Speaker 1: the coverage. But if you clear, if you run a
- 24:24Speaker 1: clear out route at fifty percent, then the defenders aren't
- 24:27Speaker 1: gonna aren't threatened by it, and they're not gonna run
- 24:30Speaker 1: with you. They're just gonna not respect the route. So
- 24:32Speaker 1: there's guys I don't want to name names, but there
- 24:35Speaker 1: are people on the tape from last week that knew
- 24:38Speaker 1: they were just clearing out and they were not running
- 24:40Speaker 1: hard off the line of scrimmage, and that it condenses
- 24:43Speaker 1: the entire combination down the fields and now guys are
- 24:47Speaker 1: on top of each other instead of the spacing that
- 24:49Speaker 1: they really want. Well, that's that's a big issue. But
- 24:53Speaker 1: I'm talking that's not a scheme adjustment, that's an attitude.
- 24:56Speaker 1: But but I'm talking about in general. In the game,
- 24:59Speaker 1: they came out ready to play and they didn't play well.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Like I mean, I'm not talking about like every single guy,
- 25:04Speaker 1: every single play whatever for eighteen weeks. I'm talking about
- 25:09Speaker 1: that they didn't have trouble offensively because they were flat
- 25:14Speaker 1: and didn't care. Like I think in Evan's not the
- 25:17Speaker 1: only one that's talked about this. There was a lot
- 25:20Speaker 1: of references to Kendrick Bourne in that game, not necessarily
- 25:25Speaker 1: going all out, Okay, and like, I don't That's not
- 25:29Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the team. Like
- 25:32Speaker 1: last year when they lost to the Colts, it was
- 25:34Speaker 1: because they were flat. I remember, yep, they were flat? Yeah,
- 25:37Speaker 1: Like I don't buy that. Yeah, I mean, you know,
- 25:43Speaker 1: does a player and you know, forget about being you know,
- 25:45Speaker 1: Kendrick Boorne. But if you're a player who's out there
- 25:47Speaker 1: for X number of snaps and they're just not throwing
- 25:51Speaker 1: the ball to me anymore, is it natural to kind
- 25:54Speaker 1: of lose interest sometimes? So what am I doing? So
- 25:57Speaker 1: for a guy like Kendrick Borne, I think that that's
- 26:02Speaker 1: he's been in offenses before in San Francisco and here,
- 26:05Speaker 1: where you know that certain plays you're just not you're
- 26:08Speaker 1: not there's not a high probability that you're going to
- 26:10Speaker 1: get the football right. And I think in a lot
- 26:13Speaker 1: of ways with someone like Hendrick Borne too, like you're
- 26:17Speaker 1: you're not Jerry Rice, like they're not they're not scheming
- 26:19Speaker 1: up all these plays to get you the football all
- 26:21Speaker 1: the time. So sometimes you just got to run your
- 26:23Speaker 1: route and if the ball finds you, the ball finds you.
- 26:26Speaker 1: The guy that I can understand that might be getting
- 26:29Speaker 1: some reservations, I know he's a young player, is Tae Kwon.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Because Taekwon gets drafted with the fiftieth overall pick. They
- 26:35Speaker 1: need receiver help, and they're just not using him properly,
- 26:38Speaker 1: Like he's just not he's not getting targeted, he's not
- 26:43Speaker 1: catching passes. You know, he's one of the worst receivers
- 26:47Speaker 1: in the league and yards per route right now, he's
- 26:50Speaker 1: got I think nine targets on the season or something
- 26:53Speaker 1: like that, nine catches on the season. So those are
- 26:56Speaker 1: things that well, then why did you draft me, right, Like,
- 26:59Speaker 1: did you have me just to come out here and
- 27:01Speaker 1: run wind sprints or did you draft me to get
- 27:03Speaker 1: me the football? Because when I played at Baylor, I
- 27:05Speaker 1: was getting the football right and I and I think
- 27:08Speaker 1: that that sometimes when you draft guys high like that too.
- 27:11Speaker 1: It I think it had Nikila. I just don't think
- 27:14Speaker 1: was was super talented, but I think at the beginning
- 27:16Speaker 1: he had some of that too, where it's like you
- 27:19Speaker 1: drafted me in the first round and I don't get
- 27:20Speaker 1: the ball? You know, why why why are we not
- 27:23Speaker 1: designing plays for me? You know when you drafted me
- 27:26Speaker 1: so high? Yeah, and I see the same thing with Taekwon.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I wonder part of the psychology of it too is
- 27:30Speaker 1: you know, knowing that Max's not really going through the progression,
- 27:33Speaker 1: so you know, if you're not one or two, there's
- 27:36Speaker 1: no chance he's getting to you. Whereas we high functioning offense,
- 27:39Speaker 1: you know, everybody could be and b be a target
- 27:41Speaker 1: on a certain that's right. You know, like if Born
- 27:44Speaker 1: does come open and maybe he's not number one on
- 27:48Speaker 1: the progression, but I'm open and you stood in the
- 27:51Speaker 1: pocket and got sacked, why didn't you look my way?
- 27:55Speaker 1: You know? Yeah? And I mean I think it's I
- 27:57Speaker 1: think you always see this when you watch games of
- 28:00Speaker 1: guys are wide open and then they had and then
- 28:01Speaker 1: the ball goes somewhere else and they have that like
- 28:03Speaker 1: brief moment or like you know, like that little moment.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I think that's pretty common. But still at a certain
- 28:07Speaker 1: point when the offense just isn't producing, it's got to
- 28:09Speaker 1: be really frustrating when you feel like, but hey, I
- 28:12Speaker 1: had four or five opportunities today to make some plays
- 28:14Speaker 1: and they just can't get me the ball. But you know,
- 28:16Speaker 1: especially with Bourne, because that was all over this tape
- 28:18Speaker 1: that he had I would say two or three plays
- 28:21Speaker 1: where he was opened down the field and whether it
- 28:24Speaker 1: was pressure, was just Mac not looking his direction for
- 28:27Speaker 1: whatever reason. I'm not saying that he would have had
- 28:30Speaker 1: two hundred yards if they found him on all of them,
- 28:32Speaker 1: but he definitely would have had a much better game
- 28:34Speaker 1: in the box score than he ended up having. He
- 28:35Speaker 1: also had like a drop in a fumble though, so
- 28:37Speaker 1: it's like, maybe you'd get more opportunity if you were
- 28:40Speaker 1: ready for it. Yeah, if I'm him, that's the mentality
- 28:43Speaker 1: I'm taking. No, it's it. There's no one thing. I mean,
- 28:48Speaker 1: there's the blame pie. There's many many slices on this pie.
- 28:53Speaker 1: No one's immune from it from the top down. When
- 28:57Speaker 1: it comes to the offense, I'm gonna bring some blame
- 28:58Speaker 1: pie to our Thanksgiving show. How about that? We'll have
- 29:00Speaker 1: some blame pie kind of pie. I'm interested blame pie.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I'm intrigued. Um. But you know, now that we're on
- 29:07Speaker 1: the buy and we're kind of evaluating, you know, what's
- 29:10Speaker 1: happened so far, I'm so pleased with the defense. You know,
- 29:14Speaker 1: I coming out of twenty twenty one, I didn't know
- 29:16Speaker 1: where the plays were going to come from. And individuals
- 29:20Speaker 1: are making plays, you know, right up the line, um,
- 29:24Speaker 1: you know, so you have to be happy with that now,
- 29:27Speaker 1: you know. I agree with Paul. They haven't really played
- 29:31Speaker 1: the teeth of their schedule yet when it comes to quarterbacks,
- 29:34Speaker 1: so that's to come where there's still a lot more
- 29:36Speaker 1: to see. I would agree, you know, but I would
- 29:38Speaker 1: be making plays. Yeah, I would agree with Yeah. It's
- 29:41Speaker 1: just the feeling of of we got to see them
- 29:43Speaker 1: do it against but they're doing it against the bad one.
- 29:46Speaker 1: I don't know what it means, but that part, like
- 29:49Speaker 1: based on what they have they have had to do.
- 29:52Speaker 1: They've they have had a lot of different guys making
- 29:54Speaker 1: plays and they have played well on the balance of
- 29:57Speaker 1: the first half of the schedule. And you know his
- 30:00Speaker 1: names are Wise and Ouche and Bentley. I think has
- 30:03Speaker 1: played better the last few games and when he started. Yeah, um,
- 30:07Speaker 1: you know. The defensive backfield is I think as solid
- 30:10Speaker 1: as we thought it should be, and it is. You know,
- 30:12Speaker 1: that's lived up to expectations. I think Jonathan Jones was
- 30:15Speaker 1: a big story when we were in training camp. Where's
- 30:18Speaker 1: he gonna how's he gonna do? What he'd be like
- 30:20Speaker 1: on the outside. I think he's been okay, it's been
- 30:22Speaker 1: pretty good. I've been fantastic. Yeah. Yeah, Jack Jones has
- 30:25Speaker 1: played well, that's a great thing. You know, the safeties
- 30:27Speaker 1: have played well. Obviously, Judean is in the conversation for
- 30:31Speaker 1: defensive player of the Year. I mean, so the defense,
- 30:33Speaker 1: you gotta be happy with it right now. I do,
- 30:36Speaker 1: and I mean I would just a couple issues. Russian
- 30:39Speaker 1: quarterbacks continue to kind of be a problem. Haven't really
- 30:42Speaker 1: adjusted to those yet. We'll see what happens with with
- 30:44Speaker 1: Alan I mean, and I also just say, you haven't
- 30:46Speaker 1: really faced the tough receivers yet. So as far as
- 30:49Speaker 1: the secondary, they've been good. But you know, now it's
- 30:52Speaker 1: now we're talking Minnesota, we're talking you know, Buffalo obviously.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I mean even Cardinals with with Hopkins make fun of me.
- 30:59Speaker 1: This guy maybe jam Our Chase. We don't know, but yeah,
- 31:02Speaker 1: I mean they haven't had I mean, what do you
- 31:03Speaker 1: mean you don't know? You know he's not playing in
- 31:05Speaker 1: that game. I refuse to believe it. Speaking of Alan,
- 31:08Speaker 1: I guess the test he has a sprain ligament and yeah,
- 31:12Speaker 1: U that's the Tommy John So he'll be fine. He'll
- 31:17Speaker 1: be fine. Maybe he'll be better, he's got to play
- 31:19Speaker 1: through it. The secondary, that'll get better as the season goes.
- 31:22Speaker 1: The outside corners, like Mike is talking about not facing
- 31:25Speaker 1: the elite receivers yet that that does worry me a
- 31:28Speaker 1: little bit. Um. Their pass rush package is phenomenal. I
- 31:31Speaker 1: mean it is so much fun to watch. That's difference.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I think I was talking to my my brother about So
- 31:37Speaker 1: I actually had a long conversation with Rich about this.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Freddy and um, he was like, yeah, but do you
- 31:43Speaker 1: really think I'm like, I don't know, Like every game
- 31:45Speaker 1: they get immense pressure on the quarterback like that to
- 31:47Speaker 1: me is right. It is classic, you know, five oh
- 31:52Speaker 1: rush package? Right, five guys across the line of scrimmage,
- 31:55Speaker 1: who's rushing, who's rapping, who's stunting, who's like it's just
- 31:59Speaker 1: like chaos. What do you think? I don't want to
- 32:01Speaker 1: make much of it, but I just I thought it
- 32:03Speaker 1: was interesting jude On saying that um that that Cha
- 32:06Speaker 1: is the one that calls the stunts up front. I
- 32:08Speaker 1: thought that was so some of their stunts are post
- 32:11Speaker 1: nap like recognition based off of the way the offensive
- 32:13Speaker 1: line slides right. So if the center slides left, a
- 32:16Speaker 1: center slides right, then they wrap opposite of the slide,
- 32:18Speaker 1: which really stresses the pressure. But they they have an
- 32:22Speaker 1: awesome thing going there with you know, Judean Ucha um
- 32:27Speaker 1: Barbo's not even playing right and they're and they're getting
- 32:29Speaker 1: to the quarterback all the time. And I would also
- 32:31Speaker 1: add what gives me hope against quarterbacks like like Alan
- 32:35Speaker 1: or Kyler is that mac Wilson is essentially a spy.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Like he's essentially a spy. It's not always exactly where
- 32:43Speaker 1: you would expect a spy to be. But he tweeted
- 32:46Speaker 1: out last night like you know, uh, just kind of
- 32:49Speaker 1: like ch and Judeo, yeah, yeah, just uh, I got
- 32:53Speaker 1: you guys, And that and then he's like six sacks later,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you know, like that that's what That's what they're doing
- 33:00Speaker 1: is they have now a guy in mac Wilson who
- 33:02Speaker 1: is athletic enough to run with some of these guys
- 33:06Speaker 1: like Ellinger could have taken off a few times yet
- 33:09Speaker 1: on Sunday, but he didn't because mack Wilson was standing
- 33:12Speaker 1: there waiting for him. This is where I'm going to
- 33:14Speaker 1: go to U site. It worked on Sam Ellen, it
- 33:18Speaker 1: didn't work on Lamar Jackson. Well maybe they had. Maybe
- 33:24Speaker 1: that's that's what he's been doing. Mack Wilson got benched
- 33:27Speaker 1: in the Baltimore game. He got bench in the Baltimore
- 33:29Speaker 1: game because of the read option stuff he could. I
- 33:31Speaker 1: think design quarterback round and scramble are two different things totally,
- 33:35Speaker 1: And I haven't seen mac Wilson be effective against running
- 33:38Speaker 1: quarterbacks now. Design't seen him design quarterback around anybody design
- 33:41Speaker 1: quarterback rounds. He had issues with play recognition, and I like,
- 33:45Speaker 1: I like reading things and right right, so that that's
- 33:49Speaker 1: that's one issue. But when they get into their four
- 33:52Speaker 1: or five man rushes on third down and he's just
- 33:56Speaker 1: spying the quarterback in the pocket, he is I think
- 34:00Speaker 1: forcing the quarterback to stay in, which is ultimately the
- 34:03Speaker 1: goal of when you have a spy or something of
- 34:05Speaker 1: that nature, and he's allowing Josh Jay and Jude On
- 34:09Speaker 1: the tee off. I think the biggest problem that they've
- 34:11Speaker 1: always had against mobile quarterbacks is they get caught in
- 34:14Speaker 1: this middle ground of are we rushing or are we containing,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and there's no there's no effectiveness to either, So instead
- 34:21Speaker 1: you're not doing either thing right, like you're not giving
- 34:23Speaker 1: one hundred percent to either thing, and it's not working.
- 34:26Speaker 1: So when you're containing, there's no pressure on the quarterback
- 34:29Speaker 1: and Josh Allen's just standing there for five seconds with
- 34:31Speaker 1: all day to throw, and then when you're rushing, you're
- 34:33Speaker 1: letting him out of the pocket. So my thing has
- 34:37Speaker 1: always been I think the best their best way of
- 34:39Speaker 1: stopping mobile quarterbacks is to let jude On and Uja
- 34:43Speaker 1: and bar more tea off and spy the quarterback with
- 34:46Speaker 1: somebody that's athletic enough to keep up, like a mac Wilson,
- 34:49Speaker 1: like a Kyle Dugger or somebody of that nature. So
- 34:51Speaker 1: if that's the route that they're going in, then I'm
- 34:54Speaker 1: all four, because you can't just let a guy like
- 34:56Speaker 1: Josh Allen just sit there right, like, you gotta get
- 34:58Speaker 1: some pressure on him. So I I would much rather
- 35:01Speaker 1: that than the Star Wars trash compactor strategy of like
- 35:05Speaker 1: trying to I would say, at the very least, you
- 35:07Speaker 1: need to do it differently. So if that's if that's
- 35:09Speaker 1: the different way, Like I don't have any confidence whatsoever.
- 35:13Speaker 1: And Mac Wilson, Josh Allen, mack Wilson, Kyler Murray, Mac
- 35:18Speaker 1: you want it? Tell me Kyle Dugger. I have some
- 35:21Speaker 1: confidence in that. I think he's an exceptional tackler. And
- 35:24Speaker 1: I think that that's where you get having guys like
- 35:27Speaker 1: Adrian Phillips and Jabril Peppers to maybe take Dawson Knox
- 35:31Speaker 1: on some of these occasions and not have to have
- 35:34Speaker 1: Kyle Dugger just cover the tight end all the time.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I think that that's where you really have that advantage
- 35:39Speaker 1: of having the depth at safety. Like last night, I'm
- 35:42Speaker 1: sitting there thinking, all right, well, when they play Buffalo,
- 35:44Speaker 1: because I'm watching the Bill's Jets game from last week,
- 35:46Speaker 1: and I'm thinking when they play Buffalo, like how many
- 35:48Speaker 1: dbs can they get on the field at once? Like
- 35:50Speaker 1: how many is too many? Like can they play Dollar?
- 35:52Speaker 1: Can they play seven defensive backs against Buffalo because Jabil
- 35:56Speaker 1: Peppers and Dugger and Phillips are not your average safeties.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Like those guys play the run better than some of
- 36:02Speaker 1: their linebackers play the run. So if we can have
- 36:05Speaker 1: all these guys on the field, like, can we can
- 36:07Speaker 1: we go for safety? Dime? Can we play seven defensive backs?
- 36:10Speaker 1: Like how many can we get on the field at once?
- 36:13Speaker 1: Can we get all four guys Phillips, Dugger, Peppers, Devin
- 36:17Speaker 1: mccordy all on the field at once against Buffalo and
- 36:20Speaker 1: be okay against their receivers, Like that's the biggest thing
- 36:23Speaker 1: to me because there's gonna be a third receiver that's
- 36:25Speaker 1: gonna be covered by a safety. So can you get
- 36:28Speaker 1: away with doing that or not? Is going to be
- 36:30Speaker 1: sort of the chess match in the game within the game.
- 36:32Speaker 1: But if you have Jalen Mills on one side and
- 36:35Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones on the other side, and you're bracketing digs
- 36:38Speaker 1: and you guy all this speed on the middle of
- 36:40Speaker 1: the field at safety, I think that there's a chance
- 36:43Speaker 1: that you could hold up and when you rush the quarterback,
- 36:45Speaker 1: go for the arm. Get Yeah, the UCLA UCLA is
- 36:48Speaker 1: that what I just pulled the fread there the UCLA UCLA.
- 36:52Speaker 1: I think we both. I think we all out. I
- 36:54Speaker 1: just think I'll be playing in that game. I think
- 36:56Speaker 1: they got some options this year that they didn't have
- 36:59Speaker 1: the last couple of years. I mean, you know, no
- 37:00Speaker 1: matter how you feel about it, like just having a
- 37:02Speaker 1: guy like Wilson McMillan, having healthy Kyle Dugger, having preppers.
- 37:06Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how they're gonna put all together,
- 37:08Speaker 1: but I just think they have some options to play
- 37:10Speaker 1: with it maybe didn't have the last couple of years.
- 37:12Speaker 1: A little bit all right, Five five Pats five hundred
- 37:14Speaker 1: is the a ticket outline. Web radio at Patriots dot
- 37:17Speaker 1: com is the email address. Let's turn to the phones.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Go to Christian in LA. What's up Christian? Hey you guys, Good,
- 37:25Speaker 1: good morning, good afternoon, Hello, football week going the right.
- 37:29Speaker 1: So here we are at the Boy and I am
- 37:31Speaker 1: feeling I guess like everybody else is feeling a little
- 37:35Speaker 1: half and half right, five and board. Not a bad record.
- 37:38Speaker 1: We lost a game or two we probably should have won,
- 37:40Speaker 1: and we won a game or say we probably should
- 37:42Speaker 1: have lost. So I think it's a net neutral with
- 37:44Speaker 1: where we are. My question for you guys this morning
- 37:47Speaker 1: is can we do mid mid season grade on our acquisition? Acquisitions?
- 37:53Speaker 1: And for those people that we think about think of
- 37:56Speaker 1: as our star Wars, where do you guys see us
- 37:58Speaker 1: going for the rest of the season. Are playoff or
- 38:01Speaker 1: just just missing the playoffs? Okay, so I mean acquisitions.
- 38:08Speaker 1: It's really DeVante Parker, right he was an acquisition and
- 38:12Speaker 1: I mean give him a CE at best. Right now?
- 38:16Speaker 1: How many was he on? How many of the ten
- 38:18Speaker 1: plays in that video did he make? We were just laughing.
- 38:21Speaker 1: We watched that the NFL released the top ten plays
- 38:23Speaker 1: of the Patriots season, and we're like, oh, I don't
- 38:25Speaker 1: remember this, and I don't know six of them were
- 38:27Speaker 1: like guy in between two people like coming down with it.
- 38:31Speaker 1: You know, I mean, what does he have for catches
- 38:34Speaker 1: in the season. I guess fifteen or sixteen, because like
- 38:39Speaker 1: seemingly every one of them was, you know, a good catch,
- 38:43Speaker 1: like in between two. That's what happened to fifteen receptions.
- 38:48Speaker 1: So like, see, that's what he does. He's a contested
- 38:51Speaker 1: catch guy. He's got one talent and at this point,
- 38:54Speaker 1: you know, early on in his career he did some
- 38:55Speaker 1: other things. Fifteen out of twenty eight he hasn't exceeded
- 39:00Speaker 1: what he usually does, so he gets he's average. I
- 39:03Speaker 1: gotta be on They kind of missed him in this
- 39:06Speaker 1: last game a little bit because they just didn't really
- 39:10Speaker 1: get much at a Kendrick born in taekwon in this game.
- 39:13Speaker 1: And I don't know, like I'm not saying that that
- 39:16Speaker 1: DeVante Parker would have made this huge difference, but I
- 39:19Speaker 1: do wonder if you know, the outside guys knowing that
- 39:22Speaker 1: he can win fifty fifty balls down the field, if
- 39:24Speaker 1: they just linger on them a little bit longer than
- 39:28Speaker 1: some of these other guys that are speed guys where
- 39:30Speaker 1: it's like if they don't get open at the route
- 39:32Speaker 1: at the release, Like I don't have to worry about it, right,
- 39:35Speaker 1: Like I know that the ball is not coming over here.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I don't know even if I've got him covered the Parker,
- 39:40Speaker 1: it still might come anyway. I gotta be ready to
- 39:41Speaker 1: turn and get the ball out. What else I mean?
- 39:45Speaker 1: Do you account the rookies as acquisitions? Um? You know,
- 39:48Speaker 1: and right now the top two not so hot? Yeah,
- 39:52Speaker 1: kind of disappointing, yeah you know, yeah, um, but the
- 39:55Speaker 1: Jones Boys, the Jones Boys table, yeah, which you know,
- 39:59Speaker 1: Jack and Marcus Jones. We're dominating the offensive or rookie
- 40:03Speaker 1: of the first half. But Marcus Jones coming on. I mean,
- 40:06Speaker 1: I know Paul Paul wrote him. I mean I just
- 40:08Speaker 1: I figured I was the only one. Now I went
- 40:10Speaker 1: with him too, Yeah, yeah, I mean I just need
- 40:12Speaker 1: the impact on special teams, you know. I mean and
- 40:14Speaker 1: even when you I mean I did a little rite
- 40:16Speaker 1: up today just kind of going through reach rookie. I mean,
- 40:18Speaker 1: you know, he's up near the top of the league
- 40:19Speaker 1: now kickoff returns and punt returns. He's got four twenty
- 40:22Speaker 1: plus ters. I mean, he's making plays. I'm not unbiased
- 40:25Speaker 1: though I've been in love with him since you have
- 40:27Speaker 1: day one, well, the draft prize. I loved him coming out,
- 40:30Speaker 1: and I was psyched that we took him. And I
- 40:32Speaker 1: probably gave him a little bit because I wanted, you know,
- 40:35Speaker 1: like that when you find like I have so many
- 40:37Speaker 1: misses in the draft, I finally seem like I hit one. Yeah,
- 40:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm just waiting for them for him to
- 40:43Speaker 1: take over for Miles Bryant in the slot like that
- 40:46Speaker 1: was still going to point that out too, I mean, yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 1: that's coming. Now. The question is is would you rather
- 40:51Speaker 1: him take over for Miles Brian in the slot and
- 40:54Speaker 1: have Mills and John Jones on the outside with Marcus
- 40:56Speaker 1: Jones in the slot, or would you rather Jack Jones
- 40:59Speaker 1: push John Jones back into the slot? Right? Either way, Yeah,
- 41:02Speaker 1: no offense to Miles Brian, but they're especially in man coverage,
- 41:05Speaker 1: they're a much better team without Miles Brian on the
- 41:08Speaker 1: field and man coverage, So they love them some Miles Bryan.
- 41:11Speaker 1: He's a smart player, and the things that they're doing
- 41:13Speaker 1: on first and second down with some of the coverage rotations,
- 41:16Speaker 1: his ability to play in different spots does really help
- 41:18Speaker 1: them spin the dial on quarterbacks. But when you get
- 41:21Speaker 1: into third down and it's third and six and you
- 41:23Speaker 1: want to play man coverage, they have better man coverage
- 41:26Speaker 1: guys now than Miles Brian in the slot, and eventually
- 41:30Speaker 1: he's going to get replaced in there. Let's go to
- 41:33Speaker 1: Tyler and Maryland. What's up, Tyler? What's going on? Number one?
- 41:37Speaker 1: How are you all good? Good? So I was just curious.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I know you're this show especially doesn't do it, but
- 41:44Speaker 1: I know it's a lot of Boston media. Well you
- 41:48Speaker 1: use Mats Patricia's like the scapegoat for Matt Jones. I
- 41:51Speaker 1: just wonder how long is that going to be or
- 41:53Speaker 1: you think it's going to be as long as Matt
- 41:54Speaker 1: Patricia's a coordinator, it should be. It is Matt Patricia's Like,
- 41:59Speaker 1: I don't say fault, but like Matt, this is Matt
- 42:02Speaker 1: Patricia's doing, and I don't know why, like we have
- 42:05Speaker 1: to you know, it's not making excuses that Mac Jones
- 42:08Speaker 1: is playing poor. We are saying he is playing poorly,
- 42:10Speaker 1: but he's playing poorly because of the results of the
- 42:12Speaker 1: things that are going on around him more than anything.
- 42:15Speaker 1: And with Matt Patricia, Like I'll just give you an example.
- 42:19Speaker 1: They come out against the Colts. You have the fifth
- 42:21Speaker 1: ranked rush defense in the league, and their first four
- 42:24Speaker 1: first downs are under center, running plays right into the
- 42:28Speaker 1: teeth of the Colts defense, like right into DeForrest Buckner
- 42:32Speaker 1: and Grover Stewart the very first play of the game.
- 42:34Speaker 1: But do you think that those first those first plays
- 42:37Speaker 1: set up the play to Smith later, like because of that,
- 42:41Speaker 1: because we did ten plays first is to set up
- 42:43Speaker 1: one twenty yard game. But but also you could be
- 42:46Speaker 1: more conservative against the Colts. You could take your time,
- 42:49Speaker 1: make sure that you establish the fact that you want
- 42:51Speaker 1: to run to set up the play action, Like I
- 42:54Speaker 1: don't know, I don't know. I don't buy that. Like
- 42:56Speaker 1: if you have better plays, you call better plays. Like
- 42:59Speaker 1: the very first play the game, they line up DeForest
- 43:01Speaker 1: Buckner's in the three technique over your rookie guard and
- 43:04Speaker 1: you try to pass DeForrest Buckner from Cole Strange to
- 43:07Speaker 1: James Ferian's your backup center, and he blows it up
- 43:10Speaker 1: for a negative two yard loss. Like, but that's that's
- 43:13Speaker 1: also part of the equation is like you know, and
- 43:17Speaker 1: you know, thanks for the call teller, you know that
- 43:19Speaker 1: your offensive line is gonna get beat this game, that
- 43:22Speaker 1: we're just not right there, We're not We're gonna get beat.
- 43:25Speaker 1: So I'm not gonna like start the game off by
- 43:27Speaker 1: having my quarterback get sacked on first down because you
- 43:31Speaker 1: know I want to pass early. So so the answer
- 43:33Speaker 1: is to run against an eight man box. Well, no,
- 43:36Speaker 1: but it's established the fact that I'm not afraid to
- 43:39Speaker 1: run at you, and so that when I do go
- 43:41Speaker 1: to play action, it's you know, it's bought. I just
- 43:46Speaker 1: think there's a lot of different ways to to run
- 43:48Speaker 1: the football. And when you know that, you have a
- 43:51Speaker 1: serious disadvantage against the Colts front lining up under center
- 43:56Speaker 1: and trying to get your rookie guard and your backup
- 44:00Speaker 1: center to pass off their best player on an outside
- 44:03Speaker 1: zone play. On the first play of the game, they
- 44:06Speaker 1: got what's second and twelve. I have a bigger problem
- 44:08Speaker 1: with that than that they ran the ball like they
- 44:11Speaker 1: continue to go back to these plays and now you
- 44:14Speaker 1: have two guys missing out of your offensive line that
- 44:17Speaker 1: was already sort of shaky. You take Andrews out of there,
- 44:22Speaker 1: and you're asking these guys that are filling in to
- 44:26Speaker 1: I think there's some timing and involved and I'm not
- 44:29Speaker 1: like to tell you all the time. I'm no expert
- 44:31Speaker 1: on this stuff, but I think there's some intricacies to
- 44:34Speaker 1: the blocking schemes and some of these plays that they're
- 44:37Speaker 1: trying to run, and I think to ask these Yadnika
- 44:41Speaker 1: just in Isaiah Wynn ended up being at left guard.
- 44:48Speaker 1: He hasn't really played guard at all, And you're asking
- 44:51Speaker 1: these guys to do these things that I think is
- 44:53Speaker 1: asking too much. I don't that's not the only thing,
- 44:57Speaker 1: and like to answer the question, my opinion is, yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 1: this is going to be the case all year for
- 45:03Speaker 1: Patricia but then that's it. Like then it's up to
- 45:06Speaker 1: Mac to figure out how to get better and how
- 45:09Speaker 1: to do this is I just don't like what do
- 45:13Speaker 1: you want? Like, I just don't know what we want
- 45:16Speaker 1: Mac to do to salvage this all on his own,
- 45:18Speaker 1: because for like to go back to running the football
- 45:22Speaker 1: all right later on in the game. I'll give them
- 45:24Speaker 1: some credit. They finally adjusted and started running the ball
- 45:27Speaker 1: out of shotgun, and they had and they got some
- 45:29Speaker 1: successful runs. I think one of the better scheme wrinkles
- 45:32Speaker 1: that they've had is taking the tight end from an
- 45:34Speaker 1: inline position and motioning Johnny Smith into the backfield and
- 45:38Speaker 1: then basically using him as a full back to lead
- 45:40Speaker 1: run gap and lead through the middle of the line
- 45:42Speaker 1: of scrimmage. Okay, so now you got a six man
- 45:45Speaker 1: box because you've spread the field, so your offensive line
- 45:48Speaker 1: that has a bunch of holes in it is not
- 45:50Speaker 1: trying to block, you know, a gap down, and you're
- 45:53Speaker 1: able to actually get hat on a hat and and
- 45:55Speaker 1: break off some big runs like we can go. I
- 45:57Speaker 1: won't go on the RPO rant yet, but like these
- 46:00Speaker 1: types of players that spread the field and lightened the box,
- 46:03Speaker 1: that's how you run the football. With a bad offensive line.
- 46:06Speaker 1: You don't try to get a bad offensive line to
- 46:08Speaker 1: block a man down like that's just asking for trouble.
- 46:11Speaker 1: If you can empty the box a little bit with
- 46:14Speaker 1: these spread formations and then run the football, then you're fine.
- 46:17Speaker 1: And they're averaging five yards to carry out of the gun,
- 46:20Speaker 1: but yet they run the ball under center all the time.
- 46:22Speaker 1: So I just don't really understand that. I mean, can
- 46:24Speaker 1: you just ask Mac to make the plays that are there?
- 46:26Speaker 1: And that's all I'm saying. You know, I'm not making
- 46:29Speaker 1: him the number one villain. I think I want to
- 46:32Speaker 1: say it's if I want to say it's Belichick's fault,
- 46:34Speaker 1: say it's Belichick's fault. But Mac needs to play better.
- 46:37Speaker 1: And at some point it's not going to just be
- 46:40Speaker 1: a like. I don't know, I just see. I don't
- 46:44Speaker 1: think there's a lot of great coaching in the league.
- 46:47Speaker 1: I don't see you know, every other team that that succeeds,
- 46:51Speaker 1: why do they succeed? They overcome the coaching. I just
- 46:56Speaker 1: think that if you I would like Mac to see
- 46:59Speaker 1: the field better too, and I wrote that this week
- 47:02Speaker 1: and after further review, But if you want him to
- 47:03Speaker 1: see the field better, you have to go back to
- 47:06Speaker 1: like how we got to this point, because if let's
- 47:09Speaker 1: just say that the reason why mac Jones wasn't succeeding
- 47:12Speaker 1: was because he was having issues pushing the football down
- 47:14Speaker 1: the field, right, Like he just doesn't have the arm
- 47:16Speaker 1: strength to push the football down the field. Well, then
- 47:18Speaker 1: you would say, okay, well that was the concern coming
- 47:21Speaker 1: in that he doesn't have great arm talent, that he's
- 47:23Speaker 1: not a Josh Allen or a Justin Herbert, but he's
- 47:26Speaker 1: regressing in areas that were supposed to be strength of
- 47:29Speaker 1: his game, right, mental processing, accuracy, like these are supposed
- 47:33Speaker 1: to be things that he's good at. So he didn't
- 47:37Speaker 1: all of a sudden go from good at it as
- 47:38Speaker 1: a rookie good at it at Alabama to not good
- 47:41Speaker 1: at it all because he of his own doing, right.
- 47:45Speaker 1: So I just if they were things that were going
- 47:49Speaker 1: wrong with mac Jones that were okay, this is just
- 47:52Speaker 1: his limitations as a quarterback, like some of the things
- 47:54Speaker 1: that came up last year where they're just not really
- 47:56Speaker 1: an explosive down the field offense because they just don't
- 47:59Speaker 1: really have that quarterback. And I would say, okay, well
- 48:01Speaker 1: that's that's sort of who you got right. But if
- 48:04Speaker 1: all these things are regressing, that are things that he
- 48:08Speaker 1: was good at is good at. Like Bill Belichick coming
- 48:10Speaker 1: out and saying, I actually think it's a strength of
- 48:12Speaker 1: his how he reads the field, but he's it's not.
- 48:17Speaker 1: It's he's not well, like performing said, Like you know,
- 48:20Speaker 1: if you say, you look at the tape and he
- 48:22Speaker 1: drops back, sets his back foot and receivers have their
- 48:25Speaker 1: back to him, I mean, that's all timing. It's either
- 48:28Speaker 1: mac that was supposed to be a seven yard drop
- 48:30Speaker 1: and he only did it in five, or the receivers
- 48:33Speaker 1: didn't cut their route at the right depth. You know,
- 48:36Speaker 1: that's a whole that's a timing thing between him and
- 48:39Speaker 1: his receiver. You know, if he's ready to pass and
- 48:42Speaker 1: no one's looking at him, or no one's at their
- 48:45Speaker 1: break yet. I mean, this is all about Patricia, which
- 48:48Speaker 1: you know how I feel about this. I you know
- 48:51Speaker 1: you we argued about it all offseason. Yeah, I didn't
- 48:54Speaker 1: understand the move. I didn't see it working and it hasn't.
- 48:58Speaker 1: But if if this is it is, then we're screwed. Yeah,
- 49:03Speaker 1: because I guess it ain't going anywhere. He's not. Bill's
- 49:06Speaker 1: not going to get rid of Matt Patricia. Yeah, but
- 49:09Speaker 1: maybe he gets better, you know, like, yeah, likes he's
- 49:13Speaker 1: never done what he's doing, and the only way you
- 49:16Speaker 1: get better is to do it, you know. I Mean
- 49:19Speaker 1: for me, it's it's more a concern of that how
- 49:23Speaker 1: much does Mac need everything to be right? You know?
- 49:26Speaker 1: And that's more than all this stuff we're talking about.
- 49:29Speaker 1: It's just it feels like to a lot of quarterbacks
- 49:32Speaker 1: get broken like this, you know, and in year two, like,
- 49:36Speaker 1: I don't know. I think every quarterback's got to deal
- 49:38Speaker 1: with pressure. I think every quarterback is going to have
- 49:40Speaker 1: to deal with games where hey, we're sorry, we had
- 49:43Speaker 1: guys in your face the whole time. But quarterbacks out
- 49:45Speaker 1: there find ways to win. I think if you talk
- 49:47Speaker 1: to like the quarter like if you went back into
- 49:49Speaker 1: the study and did like a big feature story in
- 49:52Speaker 1: the last five years and taking all the quarterbacks that
- 49:56Speaker 1: that played a significant amount and the ones that worked
- 49:59Speaker 1: and didn't work, you'd probably find a lot of these
- 50:01Speaker 1: different things. So once that didn't work, like a Baker
- 50:03Speaker 1: Mayfield right came in as a rookie, had some success,
- 50:07Speaker 1: made some plays, and then sort of regress. It's basically
- 50:10Speaker 1: the same thing, right, is that because everything around him
- 50:16Speaker 1: fell apart, or because he just wasn't that good, and
- 50:19Speaker 1: they sort of found out some of the things that
- 50:21Speaker 1: he did well and started taking some of those things away.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Because I got to tell you some of the things
- 50:25Speaker 1: that I've seen from mac Jones, and I'd agree with Evan,
- 50:28Speaker 1: this is a regression that I wasn't expecting. You know
- 50:30Speaker 1: that I'm not the biggest Mac Jones guy, but I
- 50:33Speaker 1: thought that he was past some of the things that
- 50:35Speaker 1: we've seen, like in the last couple of games, right,
- 50:38Speaker 1: So I think Evan's right, he's regressed to some of
- 50:41Speaker 1: the things that he did last year. But I think
- 50:44Speaker 1: the performance isn't as far away from the last part
- 50:48Speaker 1: of last year as people remember. I think people remember
- 50:51Speaker 1: last year it was all you know, un coons and
- 50:54Speaker 1: show ponies. It was great, and down the stretch it
- 50:58Speaker 1: wasn't great, and he wasn't great, And I think some
- 51:02Speaker 1: of that was teams watched them for twelve thirteen weeks
- 51:06Speaker 1: and said, Okay, if we can do A B and C,
- 51:09Speaker 1: we can slow him down a little bit. I think
- 51:11Speaker 1: he's been worse. I agree with Evan. I think he's
- 51:14Speaker 1: been worse than even that. But I think this was
- 51:16Speaker 1: a regression. That's thought it last year and everybody kind
- 51:19Speaker 1: of ignored it as the rookie wall. He just sort
- 51:22Speaker 1: of needed to overcome that. I don't know how, I
- 51:25Speaker 1: don't I don't know. Bottom line is I'm not ready
- 51:27Speaker 1: to give up on him because I think, yeah, the
- 51:30Speaker 1: point about the offensive coaching situation is impossible to get past.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Then That's what I'm thinking about right now, And like
- 51:37Speaker 1: listening to Evan and it's like, can they get past
- 51:40Speaker 1: this this year? Next year? I mean, I think you're right, Paul,
- 51:44Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna get I mean, but if
- 51:46Speaker 1: they haven't done it now, I mean you've heard people
- 51:48Speaker 1: who do this saying these things or low sky, But
- 51:52Speaker 1: are I mean people you know, us, people who watch this,
- 51:55Speaker 1: like we're all kind of saying the same things, Like
- 51:57Speaker 1: they have to know that too, Like they're smart football guys,
- 51:59Speaker 1: like they're not, Like, well, I mean, I'm sure they
- 52:01Speaker 1: know all of this. I just don't know what the
- 52:03Speaker 1: answer is. Like it's so unraveled at this point that
- 52:06Speaker 1: you don't even really know where what's strength to grab
- 52:09Speaker 1: to start to like weave things back together again. And
- 52:11Speaker 1: I don't know, I think it's a great question if
- 52:13Speaker 1: they're going to be able to find anything anything new,
- 52:15Speaker 1: because it hasn't. They haven't yet, And we've been saying
- 52:17Speaker 1: a lot of the same stuff for right, And I
- 52:20Speaker 1: think at first you will automatically say because I'm with
- 52:22Speaker 1: Evan in terms of you know, I've always been a
- 52:25Speaker 1: quarterback apologist, and I do think there's a lot of
- 52:29Speaker 1: different things at work. But I always I make fun
- 52:32Speaker 1: of myself. I used to do this for Drew all
- 52:34Speaker 1: the time, you know, like if they just had a
- 52:36Speaker 1: defense and they just you know, they can't run the
- 52:38Speaker 1: ball at all, but all of a sudden, you see
- 52:41Speaker 1: it done a different way and it looks a lot better,
- 52:43Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, I guess it wasn't just that.
- 52:46Speaker 1: But to Mike's point about does Mac need all of
- 52:48Speaker 1: these things to look good, yes, okay. And I think
- 52:51Speaker 1: that we can come to terms with the fact, as
- 52:53Speaker 1: a fan base, as a media, or whatever, that Mac
- 52:56Speaker 1: Jones is not Patrick mahomes right, Like, he's not gonna
- 52:59Speaker 1: just trade Tyree hill away and still have the number
- 53:02Speaker 1: one ranked offense in the league because the quarterback is
- 53:04Speaker 1: so darned good. He is not that player. So in
- 53:08Speaker 1: order for him to succeed in the NFL, he does
- 53:12Speaker 1: have to have a good situation around him. He does
- 53:14Speaker 1: have to have good receivers, he does have to have
- 53:16Speaker 1: good offensive coordinator, he does have to have good play design.
- 53:20Speaker 1: And there's not necessarily an issue with that because I
- 53:22Speaker 1: think the Patriots and I actually think the Colts not
- 53:25Speaker 1: to excuse their decisions as a front office so for
- 53:28Speaker 1: the past couple of years or in a similar spot
- 53:30Speaker 1: where their team is too good to be picking in
- 53:32Speaker 1: the top five, where you can get your hands on
- 53:34Speaker 1: a Justin Fields or you can get your hands on
- 53:36Speaker 1: a Trevor Lawrence. They're not that bad, right, So the
- 53:39Speaker 1: Patriots are never going to be picking in the top
- 53:43Speaker 1: five where they're going to draft CJ. Strout or they're
- 53:45Speaker 1: gonna draft Bryce Young, or they're gonna draft one of
- 53:48Speaker 1: these great quarterbacks from the college game. So you are
- 53:51Speaker 1: going to have to succeed with a Mac Jones, with
- 53:55Speaker 1: a Jimmy Garoppolo, with somebody of this ILK unless you
- 53:59Speaker 1: go out there make some ridiculous trade for Aaron Rodgers
- 54:03Speaker 1: or something like that, like this is what you're dealt with.
- 54:06Speaker 1: So in order to for me to like give up
- 54:09Speaker 1: on mac Jones. I need to actually see them put
- 54:11Speaker 1: him in an optimal situation making their offensive coordinator or
- 54:16Speaker 1: a play call or whatever you want to call him.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Matt Patricia not only does that is that not great?
- 54:21Speaker 1: But then having him also run the offensive line at
- 54:23Speaker 1: the same time and watch the line does fall apart
- 54:26Speaker 1: as well? That that is really watch. Then Billy benefited
- 54:30Speaker 1: from really zappy out there, was that the line was
- 54:32Speaker 1: kind of holding itself together, and yeah, or the schemes
- 54:36Speaker 1: that they're running. You know, I always talk about the
- 54:38Speaker 1: RPOs and I'm gonna go on the rant at some point.
- 54:41Speaker 1: All they've done with the RPOs right now is run
- 54:43Speaker 1: bubble screens off of them. That's all they do. And
- 54:45Speaker 1: mac Jones has thrown five passes off RPOs for three
- 54:48Speaker 1: point nine yards per temp. Because you're just not going
- 54:51Speaker 1: to generate big plays off of bubble screens, Like, yeah,
- 54:54Speaker 1: it's nice that it's out there and it's a little
- 54:57Speaker 1: bit of an eye candy or a threat to the defense,
- 54:59Speaker 1: but it's not to generate ten fifteen twenty yard gains.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Can we can we put a slant on it? Like
- 55:06Speaker 1: can we can we can we run a route? Even
- 55:09Speaker 1: I'm not asking them to run like what Miami does,
- 55:11Speaker 1: which is you know, sending to Tyreek kill on on
- 55:14Speaker 1: forty yard vertical rats off of RPOs because he's so
- 55:16Speaker 1: ridiculously fast. But like, can I get a slant, Like
- 55:20Speaker 1: can we just have a slant on the backside of
- 55:22Speaker 1: an RPO, because then maybe you hit Taekwon, or you
- 55:26Speaker 1: hit Kendrick Bourne, or you hit Jacobe Myers in stride
- 55:29Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, it's a fifteen twenty yard
- 55:31Speaker 1: gain off an RPO instead of a four yard gain
- 55:34Speaker 1: off an RPO. But they haven't even gotten to that
- 55:36Speaker 1: point yet, and maybe in practice it looks bad, so
- 55:39Speaker 1: they haven't called it in games yet. But after the buy,
- 55:42Speaker 1: they have to get to the point where this RPO
- 55:44Speaker 1: package is expanded upon and some of the things that
- 55:47Speaker 1: they do do well are expanded upon, because right now
- 55:50Speaker 1: it's just zero. And that's the that's the why I
- 55:56Speaker 1: come to mac Jones's defense because at al Bama, I
- 56:00Speaker 1: know what's going on at this since I left Fred.
- 56:02Speaker 1: But this is not the kind of the two of
- 56:04Speaker 1: them that it's frustrating because I got I go and
- 56:10Speaker 1: I every week, you know, I watched the tape of
- 56:12Speaker 1: the Patriots next opponent. So on Monday, I watched the
- 56:15Speaker 1: Patriots tape. On Tuesday, I watched the game that they're
- 56:18Speaker 1: playing next. So I watched Jets Bills, and I'm watching
- 56:21Speaker 1: Jets Bills and it's not Miami, it's not Baltimore, it's
- 56:25Speaker 1: not Philly, where there's like seventeen things going on on
- 56:28Speaker 1: every single play because they have the mobile quarterback and
- 56:30Speaker 1: they can add that run element to it and all,
- 56:33Speaker 1: but it's they have plays in their playbook, even the Jets,
- 56:38Speaker 1: that make things easy for the quarterback. And Mac Jones
- 56:41Speaker 1: is the type of quarterback that needs to have things
- 56:44Speaker 1: be made easier for him, and right now everything is
- 56:47Speaker 1: harder for him and he does not have the physical
- 56:49Speaker 1: talent to overcome that. Right The one thing I would
- 56:52Speaker 1: say that might change, I said that I don't think
- 56:54Speaker 1: they'll you know, Patricia is not going anywhere I could
- 56:57Speaker 1: see them. You know, whether it's whether it's Billy Yates,
- 57:00Speaker 1: someone will be the offensive line. Take that off his plate,
- 57:02Speaker 1: and take that off his plate. If he's going to
- 57:05Speaker 1: be the offensive coordinator, let him just be the offensive coordinator.
- 57:08Speaker 1: And enough with the nonsense. If we can't have a
- 57:10Speaker 1: title to get done. Let's go to Melvin in Tennessee.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Hey Melvin, Hey right, Hey, my typical sort of question.
- 57:19Speaker 1: But who do you think Bill Belichick will stay was
- 57:24Speaker 1: harder to defend necessarily? Would be Peyton Manning or not
- 57:28Speaker 1: saying this guy neck guys, Hey Manning, but hey Manning
- 57:31Speaker 1: or Josh Allen Peyton Allen has his ability to I
- 57:35Speaker 1: don't know. It's still so funny that we're guessing this
- 57:38Speaker 1: much to try to defend this guy and find the
- 57:41Speaker 1: Bill just say, hey, look, we have a hard time
- 57:43Speaker 1: defending you know, marble Port. The base seems like they
- 57:46Speaker 1: did pretty well against Peyton Manning. Paul defensive wise, did that? Yeah?
- 57:51Speaker 1: I think I think he would tell you that Peyton
- 57:53Speaker 1: Manning was harder than defending Yeah. I don't know. I
- 57:57Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, I think Peyton Manning is certainly
- 57:59Speaker 1: like the brain. I think Bill would really respect that.
- 58:02Speaker 1: But I also think the offense probably for them, it
- 58:04Speaker 1: is what it is. Like. I mean not saying that
- 58:06Speaker 1: that's easy, but it is what it is. With Wayne
- 58:08Speaker 1: and Harrison, and much like Josh Allen, he needed the
- 58:10Speaker 1: weather to shut down man. But you have the element
- 58:13Speaker 1: with running two and I think you know that's it's
- 58:16Speaker 1: it's more and more of a modern offense. I don't know.
- 58:17Speaker 1: I probably would ste talking about is he's Peyton Manning
- 58:20Speaker 1: and Peyton man Hall of Fame. I think they are
- 58:22Speaker 1: different challenges. I think that Peyton is a great example though,
- 58:25Speaker 1: because Peyton and the Colts and Bill gave a great
- 58:29Speaker 1: answer about this a couple of years ago. They just
- 58:31Speaker 1: did what they did. They lined up an eleven personnel,
- 58:34Speaker 1: three wide receiver the same formation on like ninety five
- 58:38Speaker 1: percent of their plays. But they had two things. They
- 58:41Speaker 1: had great receivers, and they had Peyton who would get
- 58:44Speaker 1: them into the right play at the line of scrimmage, right,
- 58:47Speaker 1: So that was I think he respects that. Yeah, maybe,
- 58:50Speaker 1: I mean, but I think that's what he You know
- 58:52Speaker 1: with Peyton Manning, right, he's a big guy that runs
- 58:54Speaker 1: with the ball, Josh Allen. I mean, you're a big guy.
- 58:55Speaker 1: You're run with the ball. You're tough to don't think,
- 58:57Speaker 1: you know. But the things that what I think that
- 58:59Speaker 1: they'll think him Allen. The thing with Peyton though, is
- 59:02Speaker 1: is like they are the Patriots offense right now looks
- 59:06Speaker 1: like those Colts offenses, but they don't have Peyton Manning
- 59:09Speaker 1: and Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokely and
- 59:12Speaker 1: you know, like they don't have all these kinds, right,
- 59:16Speaker 1: So they don't have all these individual talents. So if
- 59:19Speaker 1: you're gonna be a simple offense, then you need to
- 59:22Speaker 1: just be better than the guys that you're lining up
- 59:25Speaker 1: across from. And the Patriots just don't have personnel that
- 59:28Speaker 1: is better than most teams and most defenses, and yet
- 59:31Speaker 1: they're asking them to just like go win in one
- 59:33Speaker 1: on one matchups all across the field, and it's like, well,
- 59:35Speaker 1: this is not gonna work, you know. So it's I
- 59:39Speaker 1: think that he would say that that he'd have too
- 59:41Speaker 1: much respect for Peyton to say somebody like Josh Allen,
- 59:44Speaker 1: who hasn't won anything yet, is is better than Santa Cruz.
- 59:49Speaker 1: What's up, Matt? Oh hey it's Natt. Yeah, no worries. Hey, Heyton, Mike. Yeah,
- 59:58Speaker 1: because I wrote in last week after you ranted about
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Mac like faking injuries trying to get flagged. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: did you notice he did it again from the sly
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: and on the five or the six yard line? That
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: wasn't I didn't that one. I means kind of the
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: guy kind of like pushed him after his arm in
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: the ground. That one didn't bug me as much. But
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: but I mean I did I did catch it. I didn't.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: I didn't see anything in this game that that set
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: me off, like like those ones where I just my
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: thing is, just don't fake injury, Like don't fake a concussion.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: At this day and age, you're gonna get pulled from
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: the game. Like don't all of a sudden pretend like
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I'm knocked out for a minute, middle asecond and then
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: pop up with like an extra spring in your step,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: like just kidding him, Fine, like that's the stuff that
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: you know. It's just I think you could cost the team.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: We've been doing that careful what you wish for, right Yeah, yeah, no,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: I totally agree. And I've been thinking about this, like
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: why this that be uh mac thing has been so
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: hot in everyone's mind, and I realized, like I agree
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: with Evan. Evan, you're like the best in the business
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: on actors, and the best I've heard on Patriots, and
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: maybe one of the best in the in the entire

- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Eldred in North Carolina? Hey Aldred, Hey Fellas, Hey lady,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: how y'all doing? I was doing pretty good too. I
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: was hoping to catch Evan because Deuce I was the
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: one that made that comment about what he said first
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: part of the season. I said he looked away, Matt,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: looking after the place. You know, when you do with
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the interview. Used to be smiling and even though after
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: a loss. But this year is different, and it's offers
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: the coordinator in the place that everything now the players
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: are finn. I was the one who said that, and
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I was gonna bring that up to him. But but
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: I'm still saying, get another quarterback next year. Yeah, if
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: if we're in the market, you know, because I think
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: I think Bill did ruin. I think he is shot
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: and offers the coordinator. It's just not just tortake, y'all.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Y'all saw it in the summer. I'm looking at the
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: game and Paul sir, New York played Buffalo better. I mean,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I mean, Wilson was killing them corners and so was
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: the other guy, but more he got any point. You
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: put that upon the thing too. But but they played
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: what they played, damn good because I saw that game
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: because I could of the hour. Oh yeah no. But
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: the reason they won the game is because Buffalo didn't score,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: because the Jets didn't I mean Jets. It wasn't it
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: twenty to seventeen? Yeah, so the Jets didn't score any points.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: So you won the game because the Jets defense shut
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: them down. And my guess is you wanted to shut
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: that offense down. The offense probably had a lot to
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: do with why he got shut down. Hush, the soft
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: was all over did so that was different there. But
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: but like I said, but I'm gonna concerned about this
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: year and five four. But you made a point, yes, Paul,
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: the officers line with the sprint last year with Mason
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: and Carrot and you hip him off for a fifth
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: for a fifth round. You know that was your biggest
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: sprint last year. You know, do you guys you got
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: did you? Matt was a little bit comfortable. He'd probably
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: been a whole lot comfortable. But now you got first
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: rounds of guard that you could have gotten thirty fourth
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: round and got one of them linebackers or a wide
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: receiver or corners that were out there at the same pick.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: And that's the part that I keep throwing up for
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: the whole time. But me and me and some guys
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: that aren't be arguing. But like I told him, no,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: it's just you get the wrong players. You know, the
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: guys will be there that you need to get that,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: but you just don't get them. And that just being
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: it for the for last five six the years. But
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: I just hope we get better, but not as Patricia's
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: play calling and plus being a officers, uh, the line coach,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: it's not gonna get better. You gotta do one. He
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: can't do both. You gotta do one. That's all I
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: gotta say. All right, appreciate the call. So do you
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: think that the just Eldridge thing about the quarterback and
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: next year? Yeah, do you envision a spot where the
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: Patriots feel that way? Like? Well, you know, I was
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: thinking about that as he's saying it, and I'm thinking
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: like other teams that have drafted guys in the first
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: round and they don't work out, And you're thinking, well,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: that'll never be us. If we draft a guy in
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: the first round, he'll work out. But like that, it happens. Well,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: it happens. I was thinking. But I was thinking more
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: along the lines of like, how many years is enough
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: to determine whether or not he worked out? Yeah, there's
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: two enough, because I don't think my feeling would be no. No,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: I think, especially with this situation, I think no matter
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: how these last few games go, I think max back
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: and you know, and and for all intensive purposes of
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: the starter. Now, I do think that as Paul is
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: alluded to that there might be some additional interest in
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: how Bailey Zappy does during the summer rather than just
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: you know, kind of waiting until Matt gets back in.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: If you play out the balance of the sea in
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: your offense doesn't get that much better than it had.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I can't be like this every week. It's going to
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: get better than this. But if it continues to be
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: sort of pedestrian next year, heading into camp with those
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: two guys, I think is going to be a little
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: bit more of a competition than people. Absolutely, that'll be
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: one that we're always asking about and they'll probably Max
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: the guy and well, but they had a really good
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: day to day. It seemed like he went, you know,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: you know the stats, I mean, he's completing seventy one
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: point three percent of his practice pass Max only in
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: sixty eight perc competitive portion of practice. You in the
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: back when exactly was that? You know, when they were
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: the competitive they were doing the walkthrough seven on seven,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: that was that was fairly competitive. George and Madison. New
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Jersey writes in I was speaking to someone on the
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: phone at work and said, to your point during the conversation,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: this is curious since I never say that I quickly
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: realized that your show was the source. You guys and
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: gals say that phrase several times every show. I'm not
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: sure or how to your point became the new curious,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: but to your point, to your point is a nice phrase. Anyway,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: I love the show. If I had to say something
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: positive about you guys, would have to be Paul as
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: always the first man in in, the last man out
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: of his house, Fred is a leader of men in
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Bridgestone tires, and Deuce is a great teammate with a
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: medium football like you. There you go. I like that. Wow,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: sounds about right, sounds about right. I'll take medium, Take medium, Okay.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: I think, uh, you know, I noticed when I first
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: started doing the show. I don't want to give Paul
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: all the credit, but I thought that's one of his
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: things that he does that I think is um it's
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: a good thing for the radio show. I think it
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: makes people feel included and that you're listening to their
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: points and you know that you're addressing them. So I
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: think it's a It is a nice thing. Yeah, and
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: it's probably a verbal crutch like anything else, but it's
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: just another way of saying, you know, Like Mike said,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: or you know, when Evan was talking or you know,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: like Alexiga, Yeah, you know to that point to that,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: you know, I don't know, I just remember as an acknowledgement. Yeah,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: and as I just remember as a new guy on
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: the show, not really know what the hell I was doing,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: you know, just it was nice to be like, oh,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: someone is listening to me, and you know it thinks
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: I'm making points. So thanks Paul. Cool and in all
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: seriousness that that is why I do it, because we've
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: had Fred and I have had a lot of turnover
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: over the last two years. Right, We've had a lot
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: of new people on the show. We you know, we
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: went fifteen years with Fred, Paul, Andy and Eric. Yeah,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: and it was the same four bozos every day. We
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: didn't have to worry about, well, someone's going to get
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: offended by that, or you know if I you know,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: are they gonna get mad because I dismissed their point?
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: You know, right, you want you want to encourage them
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: to particip The answer to that question was Andy, Fred, Paul, never,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Eric always. But when you have new people in new personalities,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: you sort of get to know the Antoine and Montreal.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: I was wondering having only watched the game Sunday. Did
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: Max seem scared or answy to you guys? Also, I'm
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: not basing myself on any numbers, only my eyes. At times,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: he seemed like a kid playing backyard football and panicking
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: when the rush gets to him too quickly. When did
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: this start happening? I don't remember him playing like that
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: last year. I never panted him backyard football. I just
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: kind of, you know, I just kind of played. I
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: don't look the same as it looked. I don't There's nothing.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Nothing stood out to me. Didn't look comfortable. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: I don't think it's but I don't think early a fear.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I don't think he's scared, but but he's getting a little.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: I think the rush is getting to him. He's getting
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: hit more. And I just wonder, you know that that
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: whole cliche about Alabama, like how many times he legitimately
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: had to deal with consistent pressure. I know, and you
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: know last year the offensive line was better. He had
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: more pressure than he did at Alabama last year. But
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: this has been a different and he can wait for
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: the guy to come open because he was gonna come
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: open eventually, right, and well, he didn't have to like
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: he generally didn't have to wait. That's the whole point it,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: because those guys were always wide open, you know. And
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: remember back in the spring where we were talking about
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: some of those like Tray, remember Trey Nixon catching. Do
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: you go out to ts Alex Remember like Train Nixon
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: coup Like one of these days in May was like, yeah,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: catching these thirty five yard like deep crossing routes. And
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: you would think it to yourself, that doesn't really seem
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: like a play that would be conducive to an NFL
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: game that took forever to develop. That's kind of what
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: you see it. Yeah, what's something you know to Evan's
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: point about you see that to Evan's point about the
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: about you know, the structure of the offense and the
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: concepts and schemes and whatnot with Patricia like it works
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: on paper, but it doesn't work in practice. Well, I
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: remember you saying to me at the time, Paul that
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: it felt kind of demonstrative of like you've got We've
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: been hearing about how Matt can't throw the ball down
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: the field all year and what do you do. You
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: come out the first day and everybody's on the train
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Nixon hype train. But I think to your point, Paul,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: and to the point yesterday, we made it. Look this
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: is the same stuff now, Like it's the same things
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: going on in the regular season as those where you're
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: trying to like prove a point and get the ball
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: down the field at the you know, at the risk
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: of getting the plays blown up, of getting the quarterback sacked.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: It's like Greg you know, wrote that yesterday, he did
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: the few good men line. It's didn't between paper law
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: and trial law, and that's what. Yeah, you can draw
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: it up and it's going to get this guy open.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: And we remember those plays, and I think John O.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Smith had a couple of them too. But you looked
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: at it, You're like, there was a reason why mac
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: Jones's numbers in the spring and then in training camp
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: was so much better seven on seven than they were
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: eleven on eleven, Because what's what's happening in eleven on
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: eleven that's not happening in seven on seven? Fred Rush Russia,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: you know, and these routes that are taken forever to
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: come open, you know, like that that throw that was
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: at like um Taekwon Thornton shins. Yeah, I saw Greg
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: wrote a whole thing like that was all on Thornton,
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: Like he's just he's not. The route was wrong, he
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: wasn't where he's supposed to be, and the timing was
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: all off and he's got to throw the ball. And listen.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: I'm not telling you the x is knows, because I've
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: told you many times unequivocally, I don't care. All I'm
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: telling you is when I watch, it's not productive. The
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: quarterback is part of that, in the scheme is part
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: of that. And I think it's across the board. It's widespread.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Very rarely do you see an offense that really can't
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: do anything well. In the last couple of weeks the
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: offense hasn't been able to do anything well. Yeah, I
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: strently see object to it. Antoine also has how it
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: works Antoine Law School, um all eras of Patriots Football.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: My first career touchdown catch was to force overtime against
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the Colts. First career touchdown catch against the overtime against
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: the Colts overtime two. I didn't play football until my
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: senior year Coats. Ben Coates is correct. Wow, I don't
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: remember the overtime game against the Colts next or something.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: I only played two full seasons in my career. I
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: only played two full seasons in my career. I scored
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: twelve rushing touchdowns in nineteen seventy six. Wait a minute,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: seventies running back. Wait a minute, he only played two
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: full seasons, full full seasons without being injured. I guess
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: at some fourteen and twelve. You that's what he means. Oh,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: so this could be anybody scored twelve rushing touchdowns in
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: seventy six. I was the first Patriots quarterback to throw
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: a touchdown in a Super Bowl. Steve Grogan, he only
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: played the full season twice. That's what Antoine says. See
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: when you said twelve rushing touchdowns in seventy six, I
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: immediately said, that's Steve Grogan. But I couldn't imagine in
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: fifteen sixteen sense because he got hurt a lot. That
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: was kind of this thing. I went to cal You
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: call you. I scored an eighty three yard touchdown on Thanksgiving. Wow.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: I was instrumental in the Super Bowl against the Seahawks.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: Cal you Seahawks eighty three yard touchdown? Why am I
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: not thinking of Shane Vereen? Oh, Paul's coming to Wait, No,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: that's not right no, I just I'm not thinking of
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: Shane Vereens having gone to cal for some reason that
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: I was thinking Tully Banta Caine or something. Didn't he go.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: My parents were my parents. My parents were school teachers.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: Parents were school too. Why you gave me the side
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: of I was? I was a PAC ten offensive player
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: of the year. My parents were school teachers. I got
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: an impressive comfort behind victory against the Vikings that changed
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: the course of that season. True, come on, Paul true
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: true true, wow, all right, last one? Wow. Yeah, that's pathetic.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Love him? Oh I do heart heart true. Oh my god.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: I was signed after playing in the AFL and the UFL.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: Nick no I made my debut in a forty one
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: thirty four loss to the forty nine Ers. No I
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: retired unexpectedly in twenty twenty due to neck injuries. James
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: James Devlin's correct, My right, all right, good, good one
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: ants one very good. I'll let even uh yeah, we
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: don't want to spoil from all right, it's all walked through. Um,
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: let's go down. But but if David Andrews wasn't out there,
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: that would be bad. Yeah, that's true. Let's go to
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: CJ and KC. What's up? Cj O? Hey, what's up? All? Hey?
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: A quick question, A quick idea. I guess if the
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: offense only like improved on the turnover, so not turning
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: the ball over at all, but you didn't really see
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: any other increase in bread zone production or scoring more touchdowns,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: it could Can the defense and the special team carry
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: this team into a playoff position? No, if that was
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: the only thing to change, No, that's not gonna be.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: That's not gonna Well, maybe you could get into the players,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: but you're gonna lose in the first round. I don't
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: think you're gonna beat those teams by scoring less than
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: twenty points. Yeah, I mean you might end up ten
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: and seven. Maybe it's good enough to beat the jail.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Last week we scored twenty, twenty six,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: twenty nine, whatever, it was. Well, the offense did, yeah,
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: but the offense, the offense didn't. Yeah, the offense scored twelve, right,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: that's right. That's what I'm saying, though, is that the
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: offense doesn't happen score more if the defense and the
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: special continue to Well, if you're gonna play the Colts
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: every week, okay, okay, So if you're if you're saying
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: that you're gonna get fourteen points on defense and special
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: teams every week, Yes, you can make the playoffs. Yes,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: I would agree. And we don't turn the ball over
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: and you don't know, you can turn the ball over too.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: As long as you're gonna get fourteen free points every game,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: you can win. Yeah. Yeah, but that's not how we
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: want to win, is it, c J. We want to
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: not at all. Yeah. I'm saying, like, how far because
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: I'm thinking, like, you know, and the offense really turns
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: us around. It becomes you know, maybe above that is
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: the average offense in the league or is it more
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: realistic of the defense and the special team carries us
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: into Yeah, you know, I'd love average. I'd love to
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: get to I know, thanks, c J. I think they
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: were a like, is there anything to say that after
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: the buy bill just says, listen, if we're playing the
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: way we're playing, we ain't going anywhere. So let's just
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: take the let's open it up, you know, Mac, don't
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: worry about throwing picks, don't worry about losing the game.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: Just just throw the ball. Throw the ball. What's that?
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Isn't that what they did? In the first three weeks
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: of the season. No, I don't think so. I don't
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: I don't think so, but maybe you know. I don't know.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: But Evan is back on that note and done. All right, Evan,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: what do we got? You want the good news with
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: the bad news? First? Bad news? I didn't know there
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: was bad Oh wow, okay, I thought you're gonna say
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: good news. To be honest, I want no Trent Brown,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Devon Godshaw or DeVante Parker at Patriots practice on Wednesday.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: There is the loan practice of the week for the
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: bye week, no injury report necessary, so we're not going
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: to know for Trent and god Shaw. Is there a
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: chance that this is just better and rest? It's possible.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I don't know. If you rest guys on the bye week.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: It's kind of built interest anyways. But yeah, right, so yeah,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: no Trent and no Devon Gta, No Davanta Parker. We
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: did see Davante Parker u in sweats. He was present
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: at practice, he just was not participating in practice. So
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: that's the bad news. Do you want the good news now? Um? Okay,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: David Andrews is back. Great, So David Andrews. David Andrews
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: so is Damien Harris from Star Wars but figures. But yes,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: David Andrews in uniform participating in drills back at practice. Uh,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: that is when you're in concussion protocol. Like it's it's
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: pretty binary, right, Like it's either you're cleared or you're
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: not cleared. Like there's no middle ground there. Um. So
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: if he's even working out, stretching and doing drills of
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: any kind, that signifies that he's cleared. All right, good news,
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: that's right, that's good. I'm not gonna worry about I
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: think that and gotcha until next week. I'm gonna put
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: that on there. I think the good news is much
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: better than the bad news. Yeah, that's why I wanted
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: the good news first. No, I want to get the
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: bad news over with it. No, But I mean, like,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: I don't think My point is, I don't think the
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: bad news is all that bad because it's the one practice.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: I mean, Parker, why you know, he's coming off a
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: nice brain. Don't need to practice when you don't have
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: a game right right for a while. Yeah. So, but
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: David Andrews, if he if that's the only one I
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: would have been concerned about because a head injury if
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: he's not out there at practice, then he's not. Yeah,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: he's still not feeling up to it. So he was
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: out there. That's really good news. That should at least
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: settle some of the stuff. How was the mood of
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: the players, Evan normal? Normal? Yeah, I'm not buzzing because
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: they are going on holiday. No, the locker room today
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: will probably have a little bit of a like a
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: day last days, you know, before Christmas vacation type of Yeah,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: a feel too. Tomorrow. Yeah, I'm showing when I leave
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: the show tomorrow, you know. Yeah, I'm sure that that's
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: how that will have a you know, some sense of
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: that once the locker room opens later today. But no,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: I do think that the team recognizes as we were
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: talking about earlier before I went to practice, I'm sure
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: what you guys were talking about now too. They got
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: a lot of work to do, you know, And it's
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: the one practice that they have to make some of
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: these adjustments and get back to some of the fundamentals
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: that that they were doing well or should be doing better.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: And uh, I think this was a little bit business
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: businessman like today. Okay, you didn't start yelling urpos or
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: anything like that. He has a sign. We talked to
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: Matt Patricia on tomorrow. All right, assistant coaches are available tomorrow.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: I'm not going to ask them about our pos again.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: But the sign is not a bad idea. Maybe. Yeah,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: so Freddie, I have you know the thing with some
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: teams that I don't think are as good as their records,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: you know, the Jazz, this one in Minnesota is another one.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: You know. So this whole thing with Josh Allen and
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: he's day to day whatever. He might not play on Sunday?
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Do you know it to be the fourth time that
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: they'd face a backup quarterback for the Vikings? Is that right?
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: The fourth? If case Keenom plays would be the fourth
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: backup they played? Wow? Wow, they're in nine games. That's
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: Patriots like right there? Yes, Sean and Hazelton says that
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Antoine and Montreal is wrong. Wrong. Who's Antouana Montreal the
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: one who had the game? Oh? He says, um, the
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: gentleman who gave the trivia on Grogan is dead wrong.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Groves played full seasons in seventy six, seventy seven, seventy
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: eight and seventy nine. Eighty was when he got hurt
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: with knees and didn't play the full season for the
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: rest of his career. Was that like when there were
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: fourteen pas and Paul be Better on the Drew trivia?
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: Just an utter embarrassment Better I am absolutely worthy of
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: being called out on that. That's pathetic. I'm not gonna
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: lose any sleep over it, but but that was pathetic. Yeah,
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: what the clues? Parents teachers? I didn't both parents were teachers.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: I didn't know his parents were teach I did I
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: know Mac was a coach. I'm his coach, Right, I
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: knew he was teacher. Then you should have gotten it.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: Then that's why I was giving you the side eye.
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: Oh he wasn't. I mean he's not nine. He gave
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: me the side scoffed at it. He think, why are
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: you giving me the side one? Guy? Because you should
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: just a slam dunk? Uh? Greg is back at California.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: What's up? Greg? Hey? Greg? Hey? Guys? So, uh you
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: were saying, how you think this year so far has
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: been worse than the end of last year in terms
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: of max production? Right? Uh? No, I didn't say that.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: I think at the end of last year he had
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: fallen off as well the offense as a whole. But yeah,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: he was part of it. Yeah, okay, others even when
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: they were struggling, they still managed to sit up fifty
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: on the Jag. But they weren't struggling that game. They
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: struggled against better teams. Right. No, My My point is
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: last year, you have guys all pointed out whenever they
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: put up big points on bad defenses. It was kind
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: of obviously with an app Yeah, and well they could
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: quit not only but but hold on a second, if
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: we're gonna point and stick out our chess for putting
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: out fifty against Jacksonville. Not only it was a bad
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: team and a bad defense that had no coach? Twenty
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: how many four twenty four guys missed that game for
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: COVID something like that. I mean, can we call that
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: the outlier? Right? Because that was I mean, they were
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: thinking they'd have to bring guys off the street just
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: a man. You know. It was like, I agree with you.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: It was like fourteen points, twenty points, seventeen points, fifty points,
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: you know, seventeen points, thirty point, like they were one
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: of these things didn't belong down the stretch, and it
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: was the Jags game. Like, I agree with you guys
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: that it was kind of a fraudulent fifty points my point,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: and knew about any defense they could play this year
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: that they could put upon because I don't. Yes, yes,
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: if the Jets are missing twenty four players on Sunday,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: they could put fifty on the board. Yeah, Well besides that,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: I think, but that's what happened, I know. But his
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: greater question is is there a defense that they could
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: do that too? The going down? I mean earlier in
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: the season last year they put up fifty or forty
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: five on the Jets on the Jet and they were healthy.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: This is this is my point, Like, yes, it could happen,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: but it's not going to. I think that. The one
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: thing I would say about Mac in the second half
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: of the season, I just go back to that Week seventeen,
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: a game against Miami. I mean, more downfield throws in
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: that game than he's made in any game besides the
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: Baltimore game this year. Right, that's true. He made some
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: really good throws in that game. I know he had
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: to pick six and that was sort of the one
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: that stands out to everybody with that game for him.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: But you go back and watch that tape, I can
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: probably pull six, seven, eight, really good downfield throws from
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: that game against Miami, So I don't necessarily think that
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: it was this bad at the end of that is Greg,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the first one of those happened. Greg, is your point
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: that last year down twenty to nothing or twenty seven
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: to nothing, because that's what he made all his plays
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: down the stretch of those, Greg, is your point that
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: last year's offense was better than this year's offense. Yeah,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: I would agree. I would agree with that them put
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: up fifty on a bad defense just to know they're
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: still capable of doing that, because I honestly don't think, right,
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: So that's your point last year's offense that they with
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: the caller, Yeah, I don't think that any defense, that's
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: your point, thank you, that runs out there right now,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: they're going to hang fifty on right regardless, Yeah, right,
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: certainly not the teams that they actually are going to face,
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: and right, you know, I know defense you would never
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: envision putting fifty on the board ever, But I agree
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: with you guys like right now would be hard to
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: even getting thirty and truly offensive points, not you know,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: a pick six mixed in right Todds in North Carolina,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: which is also which is also part of those fifties,
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: by the way, that everybody forgets now because they're so
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: far removed. It's not like they just drove the ball
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: down the field every time. What's up, Todd? So when
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: you brought up the term bozos earlier when it was
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: you four, I think you guys didn't go out of
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: your way not to offend each other. I think you
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: guys went out your way to find a way to
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: offend each other. Well, yeahs Eric's best moments, We're like
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: marking the bay. Oh my god, yes, Eric, Eric's best
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: moments were when he was offended. That's this absolutely true.
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: Was there another time? Now? Football? Oh, eldred Um, What
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: are we exactly looking for in our quarterback? I know
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: that Evan has a certain idea when he was talking
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: with his pal about you know, just like a game
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: manager type thing. What do we want in our quarterback? Is?
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: What is the team designed to have provided by their
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: quarterback at this moment? And I'll take your answer up there. Thanks, guys.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: What do we want all the guy who makes good decisions, decisive?
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: I think it's what Mac was. That's why I think
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: Mac and Cohan anywhere, because I think that they liked
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: that kind of player, and you know, I think that
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: they believe that if things are right, they can they
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: can get him to do what they want to do.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: Good decisions, get the ball out, deliver the you know.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: I mean he says it all the time, like my
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: job is just to distribute the ball and get it
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: to that. He doesn't really talk like a quarterback who's
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: like I'm gonna come out here and dominate. I think
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: that's what they like. They want a guy who sees
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: it as a distributor of the offense. And you know,
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: and I think Mac checks all those boxes through him.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna move on from him unless it,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: you know, became just turnover factory after turnover, you know,
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: over and over, and then it's at that point then
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: all bets are off. It goes back to what I
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: was saying, or like how are they going to move on?
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: Like where are they going to get a better quarterback?
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: Like it's not going to be in the draft because
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: they're gonna be picking seventeenth. So unless they make some
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: ridiculous trade up like the like the Niners did for
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: Trey Lance, like and they're not going to make a
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: ridiculous trade for a veteran. I mean, like the Brady thing,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: whatever I would, I would put a percentage there that's
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: a little bit more than zero just because it's Brady.
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: But like the Aaron Rodgers thing, someone said that they'll
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: sign Aaron Rodgers, like and I didn't even realize he's
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: still under contract, so you'd have to trade for him,
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: So that completely eliminates it. Ye, Like, but if you're
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: going to sign him, like if green Bay like got
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: rid of me, you have to he made fifty million, Like,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: you're not getting him for nothing, all right on. No
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: way they can get Aaron Rodgers via trade is if
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: he pulls the Davante Adams and he says, the only
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: team I'm going to is the Patriot forces forces his hand,
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: the only team that I am playing for next season.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: I'm I'm either retiring or I'm playing for. But you
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: given us, You're given up with the Raiders, gave up
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: at Davante Adams Rogers. And I'm not saying would you
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: do it with the Patriots to it? Probably not. But
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: like if you're telling me that Bill has like this
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: is it? This is the Swan song, Like he's got
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: one more year left, or he's got two more years
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: left but he but we're pushing all the chips in
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: to win a super Bowl in his last season as
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: the coach, or at least catch up with Shula. Absolutely,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I think those two would kill each other before the season.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: I'm talking myself into it. Just pompous Aaron Rodgers walking
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: around these hallways out there with his man bun and
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: staring and Pete. Would it be need bills and covering
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: like Brady but Bills? What would Bill's reaction the first
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: time Aaron Rodgers gives it the palms up, looks, oh yes,
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: out here in the service? Something you got the one
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: case of Gator, a case of water, in case of
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: Clay I got it. Just wasn't that fun? Wasn't that funny?
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: We get him like an Ayowashka gonna try. I'm still
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: a little try. You gotta you gotta forgive me. I'm
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: still a little thrown a little forgetting that. Drew, Yeah,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: dance in Virginia and Michigan. What's up, Dan, Good afternoon, team.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: I got two questions, lawyer. The first one is, is
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: Jacoby Meyers the only wide receiver that gets open when
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: Mack is in a quarterback or is he just the
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: only wide receiver that maxc for some reason. Trust And
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: my other question is is teaching the difference between teaching
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: offense and teaching defense. Is it like, um, for example,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: teaching your biology teacher and you teach anatomy, which is
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: kind of close, um, you know a little bit a
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: little bit different. Or is it more like you're a
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: biology teacher and then you have to teach um chemistry
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: or physics or something. Because I think when of Bill's
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: underrated um talents is what he got from his mom.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: You know that that teaching aspect, you know, breaking it down,
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: making it simple, giving the players always say about how
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: it gave us the three key things we need for
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: the game, and just sort of seems it seems to
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: me that Patician might not really have those people's skills.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: Given everything we've seen, and given his background as an engineer,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: that would suggest that he tends to make things more
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: complicated rather than speaking of making things competentible. Yeah, I like,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: I understand what you're trying to get at. I think
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: I think the difference to me between defense and offense.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: I think being a good athlete on either side of
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: the ball helps you obviously, but I think you can
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: get away on defense with just like hustle and determination
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: and instincts or an offense. But you know, at the
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: skill positions, you got to have that skill. You got
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: to have that skill you have if you're a receiver,
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: you gotta be quick enough to get open and you
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: got to catch the ball when it's thrown to you.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: That's a skill like you can't like you can't acquire
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: that by just hustling, you know, and in watching film
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: you actually have to have that skill in the same
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: way quarterback or you know. So there's a difference in
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: how like you can only teach offense that much and
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: at some point you just gotta let them play and
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: hope they make the play, you know, Yeah, you know right.
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: I think it's more like teaching science and then they're like, oh,
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: the history teacher is out today, can you go in
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: and teach us history for a day? Like I think
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: it's that different, honestly, because you're you're looking at it
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: in totally different way. Offense is like it's it's creative, right,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: Like it's it's a creative thing to scheme up offense,
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: whereas with defense, It's much more like a math equation, right,
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: like a runfit, like we have okay, this box, we
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: have seven guys like this is this guy's got the
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: A gap, that guy's got the B gap, this guy's
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: double get you know, playing a two gap Like that's
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: like it's more about like yes and no, right, But
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: not to say that there is a creativity and defense.
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: There is, you know, with with how disguising, blitzing and
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: all that stuff, and you know you can do, but
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: it's less you know, skill, you know what I mean.
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: It's just like to listen to what I'm doing, look
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: at your keys and and and you know, perform you
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: know what we're telling you to do. I think off
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: them with everyone. I think it's way different. And I
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: think offense is so precise, like it has at the
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: timing of everything has to be so perfect, right, Yeah,
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: you have to have the skills, You're right, It is
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: like this. The skill is you know, you have to
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: have the traits athletically and whatnot. And probably you can
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: get by a little bit defensively just by you know,
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: being a forced Yeah he'd seeking missile when you go
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: and break the playoff, but you know when when Brady.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: Remember Brady would be like maniacal if you like, you know,
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: it's supposed to be nine yards, and you know that
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: matters now defensively, that drop might supposed to happen at
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: at nine yards, but you could get by if it's
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: ten because the timing is not as important because if
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: I can get there and just break it up, I
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: can break it up right, you know, I don't have
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: to catch it well run. They would always say in defense,
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: I'd rather have everybody doing the wrong thing than one
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: guy doing the wrong thing. You know, like if we're
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: all on the same page, we can make up for it.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: But if one guy is doing this and everybody else
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: is do it, that screws up our whole deal. But
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: I'm with Evan on the differences this has kind of led.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: That led my panic in the first place, Like, yeah,
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: that's that's what concern is that you know, to teach,
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: you've got to be an expert in something. You've got
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: to know something. And you know, if a fine was
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: a little bit and he and he just adapts, okay,
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: But if it's as big at golf as as you're saying,
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: then yeah, and that's not going to help anybody and
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: the world to keep using for the offenses, it's just
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: not clicking. You can argue that that Another word for
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: that would be they're not coordinated. Yeah, you know the job,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: I don't have a cod But my contention, and every
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: week I'm thanks, damn, I'm being proven more and more wrong.
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: But my contention going into the season is that, yes,
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: you know there practice makes perfect, especially you know, even
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: in coaching. But like when you've been in the league
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: for a certain amount of time, in risen to the
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: level of head coach, you're even though you came from
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball, you're learning offense too. Sure,
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: you know, you're you're you're defending offenses, so in doing that,
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: you're learning offenses as well. So, like, you know, to me,
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: it wasn't that much of a stretch that someone could
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: come from defense and be good at offense, you know, especial.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: But I remember this in this particular case. I might
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: be wrong, but like I think it can happen. It's
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: not like, oh, this is the craziest thing ever. You know,
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: what was the name of the offensive line coach that
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: Andy Reid made defensive coordinator with the Eagles that year
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: and it was a complete and total disaster. I do
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: not know. I'll have to go back and look it up.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: I felt like he was he was an offensive line
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: coach and they just made a defensive coordinator and he
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: was a complete disaster. Like I think it's just as
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: hard to do it the other way, Like, yeah, yes,
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: I think that you know offense, you know defense, you
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: know football, Like I understand that, you know, what's not
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: over complicate things. But I think when you're asking a
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: guy to be completely in charge of one side of
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: the ball or the other, the guy has to have
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: experience on that side. But I also think that, you know,
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: so it's not just that it's he was also asked
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: to be the offensive line coach. He was also asked
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: to Now I don't it might have been his idea
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: to install a completely new offense one Castillo, you know.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: So it's not like it's not like, oh, you know,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: I was, I was on defense for this team against
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: our offense, and we're going to keep our offense. So
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: you know, Uh, also, coach old line put in a
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: new you know, offense and not with a veteran quarterback,
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: you know. So he had all those things against him
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: Patricia and being asked to do something he hadn't done before,
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: you know, so it was That's like I never thought
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: of it that way. Like a lot of people are like, oh, Patricia,
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: he owes it all to Bill, right, I mean Bill,
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: like he takes care of him and he brings them back.
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: Maybe he threw him into the fire kind of setting
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: him up to fail. Right, I feel like I said
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: that exact thing before that. I mean, how hard I mean,
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: how hard was it for Matt Patricia to be successful
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: this year? The offensive line has to be good, the
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: offense can't drop off from what it was. Mac has
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: to progress. You've got all these new pieces. Um, I
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: liked what I mean. I mean, you know, is Bill projecting?
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: Because Bill's like I could do that and probably Bill could, Okay,
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: but not everybody can. So just in full disclosure, I
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: think Bill probably could because I think Bill is that
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: so maybe he's like Ted Williams, where well I can
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: hit for four hundred, why can't you. I think the
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: biggest thing with the switchover is that, Okay, Like to
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: your point, Fred, you can you know offensive football and
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: you know how to attack offenses and narrow some reverse
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: engineering that can be done there. But I think what
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: offensive coaches know to a level that a defensive coach
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: just wouldn't know is how to help skill players and
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: quarterbacks do their jobs easier, Like how to make it
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: easier on a receiver. So like we can talk about
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: motion right, Like it is easier for a receiver to
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: get off the line of scrimmage if he comes in
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: motion before the snap, whether whether it's a pre snap
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: shift or it's a full on motion at the snap
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: like a jet motion or something like that, it makes
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: it easier to get off the line of scrimmage. So
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: like when the Patriots had Julian Edelman, they always used
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: to motion him in on that little short motion and
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: then snap the ball right and he wouldn't be able
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: to get jammed at the line of scrimmage. These little
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: like tools and tricks of the trade that offensive coaches use,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: I think are things that defensive coaches might not know
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: how to design, or when to design, or exactly how
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: to go about putting those pieces together. And that's why
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: I think the Patriots are like thirty first in the
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: league and pre snap motion is because they just don't
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: have that creative gene to make it easier. But you know,
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: you watch like a team like Miami and they just
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: are motioning guys all over the field. You watch Kansas City,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: They're motioning people all over the field. And these are
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: like the best offenses in the league statistically, and guys
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: are just coming from all sorts of different directions and
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: things like that, and that makes it easier. You know,
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: It's like motioning a tight end across the formation and
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: then snapping the ball to run a play in that direction,
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: and now you've gotten him in favorable leverage to make
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: his block, So his block just got a lot easier
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: for him to make it. Receiver releasing off the line
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: of scrimmage. You know Taekwon Thornton coming in jet motion
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: and then releasing and now he's already at full speed,
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: so it's not like he's start starting from a standstill
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: and then having to build up. But they've already allowed
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: him to build up some of his speed off the
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: line of scrimmage. Like these are the things that make
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: it easier for offensive players and especially receivers to get
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: open down the field, and the Patriots just don't do
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: a lot of it. And I think a lot of
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: that points to the fact that they have a defensive
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: coach who's not designing plays on that level of sophistication yet.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: And I've always felt like a part of what they
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: do well here historically was putting players in position to succeed.
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: And that feels like that's where the disconnect is for me,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: where it doesn't feel like you're doing them everything, does it?
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: You know, putting coaches in the position to succeed, you know? Yeah,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: And you know where's the line between Matt Patricia just
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: doesn't know what he's doing and we want to simplify this, Like,
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: I mean, I got all the stuff about wanting to simplify.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how you guys feel, but
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: I felt like, I mean, you had to at some
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: point break up with the Josh McDaniel's offense. When Josh left,
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: I mean, who else can really do it? You know?
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: I mean I think they had to make operators, you know,
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: I mean they had to, I feel like, make some
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: kind of change. Now I don't think they did the
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: right thing, but you know, I just I think everything
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: even't said about just the creativity on offense and how
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: much goes into it, And like, as I've watched football
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: over this these years, like you know, understanding the steps
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: and you know when it's a three stretch drop, you've
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: got to run the route in this many steps and
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: it's got to be right here, and you'll see Brady
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: walking it, and you know just all the nuance that
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: goes into it, and not only on the micro level,
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: to go back to another phrase you mentioned earlier, but
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: the bigger level of knowing, all right, we ran this, well,
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: now we're going to counter with this. That's really going
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: to screw them up when they're trying to block this.
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: So yeah, you know, just the being one step ahead
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: of it all as well is another element that you know.
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: Sometimes I think it feels like we're just running plays.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: We're just running plays. Put it, they're just running plays.
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: They're just and that's what you don't get without experience,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: right because like I could run, I could go out
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: and call a bunch of plays in a row, but
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: I've never called sequential plays and set things up seeing
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: what the defense is now to you and say I
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: know what to go to now because of what they're doing.
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: And I gotta think that that's a learning process, Like
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: I don't think you could just fall out of bed
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: and say okay, I'm on offense now. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: know how to do that. That's what Josh had a
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: feel for it, Like, you didn't have to keep the
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: same offense, but if you wanted to change the because
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: I don't know who they could have hired that could
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: have done that offense, Bill O'Brien, evidently they couldn't get
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: so you would. You were dealing with some sort of
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: change regardless, but you had to have an offensive guy
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: do it, like it makes no sense to change the
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: offense and go to a defensive guy. Yeah. I think
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: the play sequencing is so true too, because it's like,
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: you know, with McDaniels or with an experienced coordinator like
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: could take the you know the Shanahan tree, right, it's
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: outside zone. It's outside zone, and now we're bootleg. Now
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: we're bootleg off the outside zone. We're gonna show you
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: the same exact outside zone in blocking up front, and
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: we're gonna marry that to Now we're gonna bootleg off
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: of it. And now the quarterback has all day to
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: throw and he's got open receivers down the field. And
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: this is you know, complimentary football, like when they run
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: play action they just the offensive line just pass protects
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: like there's no run action involved in the play action.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: So the linebacker level doesn't fall for it, like they
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: just don't fall for it. And so they are sitting
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: there and they're seeing the heads go up on the
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: offensive lineman because they're just getting in their pass sets
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: and they're like, oh, it's a pass like, this isn't
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: play action. So with the you know, with McDaniel's offense,
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: they are a gap team, right, they're downhill team. So
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: they pulled guards a lot, they lead with the fullback
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: a lot. So when they ran play action, they would
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: run James Devlin through the line of scrimmage like he
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: was gonna lead block, and then it would actually be
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: a pass play and that would get the linebackers to
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: step up into their run fits. And now that it's
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: a fullback out there, so you're kind of already alert
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: to run probably anyway. I mean, it's it's something that
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: used or they pull they pull the guard and they oh,
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: here here comes the you know power, here comes counter again.
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: But now we're pulling the guard and now it's past
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: you know, and now it's play action, and that that's
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: the whole like established a run thing like the nerds
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: get mad at that, right, Like it doesn't you know,
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: people say, oh, like it run effectiveness, run frequency. That
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: doesn't set up play action. What sets up play action
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: is the blocking. Right it's mimicking the blocking up front
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: looking the same every single time, the fake looking the
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: same every single time, like Mac Jones's fake needs to
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: be the exact same way as his handoff, Like it's
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: got to look exactly the same. Right, the line has
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: to be exactly the same. If they're gonna run inside zone,
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: the line has to block inside zone like they would.
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: The first couple steps that they take needs to look
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: exactly the same as the run blocking scheme does. That's
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: what gets defense is to bite on play action, and
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: you know those little things like that. You just don't
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: see a whole lot of those, you know, tricks like
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: those little tricks. They just don't have a ton of
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: those in the offense. Right now, find one of them, Fred,
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: pick one, anyway, I get anyway, that'll be here for
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: this edition of Patriots Unfiltered Tomorrow you guys are back.
