- 0:00Speaker 1: Mister New York.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Here's more Marks alone on seven ten wo r Well
- 0:06Speaker 2: Roger Friedman, the great entertainment reporter. His website showbiz for
- 0:11Speaker 2: one one dot com. You should check it every day.
- 0:13Speaker 2: There's always new stuff up there. Showbiz for one one
- 0:16Speaker 2: dot com. Roger Friedman, how you doing.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm great, Good morning. How are you, Mark?
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm good? Little stuffed over eating that Super Bowl stuff
- 0:25Speaker 2: those parties. I know, what do you think? The game
- 0:27Speaker 2: was pretty boring? But what'd you think of the rest
- 0:29Speaker 2: of it?
- 0:30Speaker 3: I thought the Bad Bunny was fabulous. I thought the
- 0:34Speaker 3: show was beautifully produced. I liked all the acts before that.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I thought Green Day was terrific and Brandy Carlisle and
- 0:43Speaker 3: I loved Coco Jones.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You know it was great. It's the toughest thing to
- 0:48Speaker 2: do nationalistm you know it was great. Was Charlie Pooth?
- 0:50Speaker 2: He was really good.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Charliepooth was excellent. He was excellent. But and I love
- 0:54Speaker 1: to the he set up all that gospel choir.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But what the hell was he wearing that beat up
- 1:00Speaker 2: leather jacket. He looked like a munks in the cab
- 1:02Speaker 2: driver on all in the family. What was he wearing
- 1:05Speaker 2: it's the super Bowl, put a nice jacket on.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. Somebody should have addressed him, but
- 1:15Speaker 3: he did. But musically it was very good, and he
- 1:18Speaker 3: said it was a tribute to Whitney Houston, who did
- 1:20Speaker 3: the best one of all.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So h so that was very nice.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And then Bad Bunny with Lady Gaga was fabulous and
- 1:29Speaker 3: Ricky Martin was a really nice nod. This Bad Bunny
- 1:32Speaker 3: is such a respecting, respectful guy and he knows that
- 1:36Speaker 3: Ricky Martin is the biggest star.
- 1:38Speaker 1: In Puerto Rico.
- 1:39Speaker 3: So he had him on and and his whole it
- 1:43Speaker 3: was g It was like g rated.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It was so uh well wholesome.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It was in Spanish. Who knows what he was saying,
- 1:50Speaker 2: but you know what the problem.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We can tell it. I know everyone's complaining that they
- 1:54Speaker 1: weren't subtitles.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Now here's the problem with Bad Bunny in today's world.
- 1:58Speaker 2: This guy's the biggest starring will but half the audience
- 2:01Speaker 2: doesn't know who the hell he is. And you could have.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I don't know, Mark, he sold like ten million albums
- 2:07Speaker 3: last year.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, but if you go to people over
- 2:09Speaker 2: forty five, they don't know who he is. Fifty they
- 2:11Speaker 2: don't know who he is, you know, in the good.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Old days forty six, Well, I know who he is.
- 2:16Speaker 2: No, But in the good old days you have the
- 2:17Speaker 2: Rolling Stones. Everybody loved them, Billy Joel, everybody. There's no
- 2:20Speaker 2: such thing as a mainstream artist anymore. That every demo
- 2:23Speaker 2: everybody knows.
- 2:25Speaker 3: No, that's hard to do. That, that's definitely hard to do.
- 2:30Speaker 3: And you can't get those listen, these people bad bunnies
- 2:33Speaker 3: in his I don't know, thirties. You can't get these
- 2:38Speaker 3: eighty year old people to come out and perform at
- 2:40Speaker 3: the halftime. Yeah, but there's nose to start developing younger acts.
- 2:44Speaker 2: You know, like take where I'm sitting right now here
- 2:47Speaker 2: at iHeart. We got Z one hundred over there. We
- 2:49Speaker 2: got Q one o four down there, the plays classic rock.
- 2:53Speaker 2: We got Power one oh five. There's no artist that
- 2:56Speaker 2: could be played on every station. Each one has their
- 2:58Speaker 2: own music. They're all separated.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Wow. So when we were growing up, when we were
- 3:02Speaker 1: growing up in.
- 3:03Speaker 3: The radio, we would listen to WABC and they'd play
- 3:07Speaker 3: a country song, an R and B song, a rock song,
- 3:10Speaker 3: a pop song. It was all like but you know,
- 3:13Speaker 3: as you're right, it's splintered into all these different genres
- 3:18Speaker 3: and it's sort of sad in a way because we
- 3:21Speaker 3: learned a lot about other music when we used to
- 3:23Speaker 3: listen to the radio and now they can't do that.
- 3:26Speaker 2: But if you go back to them, like the nineteen
- 3:28Speaker 2: sixty Super Bowls halftime was like Andy Williams, can you imagine?
- 3:32Speaker 2: You can't even picture of that.
- 3:35Speaker 3: But no, they had Al Hurt in nineteen sixty seven.
- 3:39Speaker 3: They had Al Hurt play the horn.
- 3:41Speaker 2: He was a trumpet player from New Orleans. He had
- 3:43Speaker 2: a couple of hit singles.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Here's the other problem. The commercials, which were phenomenal, had
- 3:52Speaker 2: very little impact. I think the problem is in today's world,
- 3:55Speaker 2: there's a million videos, AI videos on TikTok, Instagram, me
- 4:00Speaker 2: get thousands of the day, So after all of that,
- 4:02Speaker 2: the commercials don't impression anymore.
- 4:05Speaker 3: The commercials have been diluted, there's no question about it.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And I really could not stand the one with Ben
- 4:11Speaker 3: Affleck sending up Goodwill Hunting, and it's really interesting because
- 4:16Speaker 3: he had all these like weird TV stars in it,
- 4:19Speaker 3: but he didn't have Mac Damon who was in Goodwill
- 4:22Speaker 3: Hunting with him. And they won the Oscar together for
- 4:25Speaker 3: writing the screenplay. I think Mac Damon said I'll sit
- 4:27Speaker 3: this one out because that was a big mistake and
- 4:31Speaker 3: it made goodwill. Hunting is a great movie, and they
- 4:35Speaker 3: made it seem silly, you know, and it's enough with
- 4:38Speaker 3: Ben Affleck and Dunc and.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Donuts, really enough. Hey, Roger Freeman, have you been reading
- 4:46Speaker 2: through the Epstein files?
- 4:49Speaker 1: I have been reading a lot of the Epstein files.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Through there.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Well, there's nothing about Woody Allen, nothing bad. The thing
- 4:58Speaker 1: is that nothing bad, but you know that.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Look Jack lenn who's the French cultural minister, he's in
- 5:07Speaker 3: it too. What Jeffrey Epstein did, which was a terrible thing,
- 5:12Speaker 3: as it turns out, is that he was giving all
- 5:14Speaker 3: these people money and attention and they were taking it
- 5:18Speaker 3: and they didn't know what was going on. They didn't
- 5:20Speaker 3: go to the island, they didn't do any of that stuff.
- 5:22Speaker 3: They didn't know about the girls. But Jeffrey Epstein was
- 5:28Speaker 3: offering them a chance. As we would say, some of
- 5:31Speaker 3: your listeners listeners will know this word snoring. A lot
- 5:36Speaker 3: of these people were schnoring off of Jeffrey Epstein. He
- 5:40Speaker 3: was offering them plane rides and dinners and making phone
- 5:44Speaker 3: call influential phone calls for them, and everybody was saying
- 5:48Speaker 3: yes because they thought, why not, he's not asking for
- 5:50Speaker 3: anything in return.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Well, so all he really.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Wanted was he was sort of he was. What he
- 5:55Speaker 3: was doing was paying everyone to be his influential friends.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I mean the only he had doing you wanted to
- 6:01Speaker 2: if you're Woody Allen, you had he who would have
- 6:03Speaker 2: a dinner party with a bunch of CEOs. You had
- 6:05Speaker 2: to come to his dinner and sit there and impress
- 6:07Speaker 2: everybody that you were there. Uh, he had to come
- 6:09Speaker 2: to a few lunches that kind of stuff.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yo.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I know what he pretty well, and I know, listen,
- 6:14Speaker 3: what do you and siny? They have no other fault
- 6:18Speaker 3: except that, like everybody in Hollywood, they want a free dinner. Yeah, well,
- 6:22Speaker 3: actually in Hollywood wants a free dinner.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Apparently he's looking for financing for his movies. But you
- 6:26Speaker 2: know in every Broadway show, the way they raise money, Yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 2: they raised money by getting these New Jersey housewives with
- 6:32Speaker 2: money to put in five hundred thousand seven, Oh my god.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And they have to pretend that they're the producers.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And listen to these people.
- 6:41Speaker 3: That's I recently went through something like that, or I
- 6:43Speaker 3: listened to people doing that.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so, but you know, but there's all these people.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Uh, there are a lot of people in there who
- 6:51Speaker 3: I think are actually kind of victims.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Not the women.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I mean the women thing is serious with the women
- 6:58Speaker 3: who are trafficked, but these other people were sort of
- 7:00Speaker 3: victimized too because they didn't understand what Jeffrey Epstein was
- 7:04Speaker 3: doing to them.
- 7:05Speaker 1: He was really evil.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah, hey, I made the Epstein Files.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Did your congratulations?
- 7:12Speaker 2: Nothing bad? Nothing bad, just harmless.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Nothing bad.
- 7:15Speaker 2: No? Now was the other Was he just a fan?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Did he listen to the show?
- 7:20Speaker 2: No? But apparently there was an email between him and
- 7:22Speaker 2: Jackie Martling talking about listening to this show. And then
- 7:25Speaker 2: there was another one where I was going to come
- 7:26Speaker 2: to a lunch where I was the MC. But that's all, Huh.
- 7:31Speaker 3: All he wanted to do is go to parties, Jeffrey Epstein. Yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 3: he wanted to go to parties day and night. And
- 7:36Speaker 3: he didn't care. He was using everyone in town. Howard Rubinstein,
- 7:40Speaker 3: who was like a famous publicist, you know, public relations guy,
- 7:43Speaker 3: was his publicist.
- 7:45Speaker 1: So he was keeping his.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Name of the New York Post but getting him into
- 7:48Speaker 3: things that he wanted to go to Hey.
- 7:51Speaker 2: We only got a minute left. Our talk shows dying.
- 7:54Speaker 2: They've just canceled a whole bunch of the top daytime
- 7:56Speaker 2: talk shows. Sherry Shephard, Kelly Clarkson is at the end
- 7:59Speaker 2: of the talk show? Is it?
- 8:01Speaker 3: We're coming to the end of this we've had We've
- 8:04Speaker 3: been seeing them for forty years or fifty years. And
- 8:07Speaker 3: what's happened is with streaming and all the different things,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and you know, they're expensive to produce, and now we're
- 8:15Speaker 3: down to really just Jennifer Hudson has her show, Tameron
- 8:19Speaker 3: Hall has a show, and Drew Barrymore. We used to have,
- 8:23Speaker 3: you know, Phil Donaghue and Oprah and Sally Jesse, Raphael.
- 8:27Speaker 3: We had tons and tons of these shows, but they're
- 8:30Speaker 3: expensive to produce, and the stations are finding that it's
- 8:34Speaker 3: cheaper just to put on the news all day, just
- 8:36Speaker 3: like See It n They just put on the news
- 8:38Speaker 3: and they have, you know, a correspondence running around in
- 8:42Speaker 3: Queens telling you what's going on, and it doesn't cost anything.
- 8:46Speaker 3: It's not the same cost as flying in movie stars
- 8:49Speaker 3: and that kind of thing.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So we are seeing sort of the decline of it.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Definitely long way from Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas.
- 8:56Speaker 1: But oh my, those were the days.
- 8:59Speaker 2: There you go, well, great stuff, Roger Friedman, thanks for
