- 0:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I filled up in three months.
- 0:01Gretchen Wegner (she/her): What did full mean for you at that point?
- 0:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Had 20 kids.
- 0:06Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay, so and that's a big client load.
- 0:08Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I feel like that's on the high side.
- 0:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Correct.
- 0:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes.
- 0:11Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You're like,"Correct." Welcome to the Academic Coaching Podcast, brought to you by the Anti-Boring Learning Lab.
- 0:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I am your host, Gretchen Wegner, and this is the show where we dig into the craft of coaching students, the study skills, the executive function strategies, and the occasional business tip for those of you in private practice.
- 0:36Gretchen Wegner (she/her): My guest today is Jordyn Shapiro, founder of Just Start LA, which is an academic and executive function coaching company that also provides tutoring and college and test prep support.
- 0:49Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh my goodness, they have their hands in so much, and it's so impressive.
- 0:53Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Jordyn started building the business actually while she was still in college, and opened her first office at 22, and now leads a growing team of coaches.
- 1:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): We talk about what it actually takes to grow from coach to business owner, including some of the mistakes Jordyn made along the way, importantly, how she hires and trains other coaches, and also what it's like to build a company when everyone on your team is under the age of 27 and probably also in grad school.
- 1:24Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Anyway, stick around to the end of this great conversation, because I also asked Jordyn how on earth she managed to fund all of this at age 22, and the answer genuinely surprised me.
- 1:37Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So are you ready?
- 1:38Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Are you set?
- 1:39Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Let's get into it So oh my God, Jordyn, first things first, what is going on in your world today as a business owner in the executive function coaching industry?
- 1:51Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Like, how are you?
- 1:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: A lot.
- 1:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, you're hitting this call, um, and starting this at the perfect time because we are getting calls and inquiries up the wazoo right now.
- 2:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, we actually have had to hire another executive function coach in the past week.
- 2:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh wow
- 2:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: to hire another executive function coach a month ago.
- 2:17Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm
- 2:18Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: we've seen in the past years that I only have to hire about one executive function coach per semester.
- 2:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We are tracking for this semester.
- 2:28Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Wow!
- 2:29Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: so that's very exciting.
- 2:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, the biggest reason is because we don't have a lot of executive function coaching businesses around us that we could refer out to, and a lot of other individuals refer to us because they don't want to grow their own company.
- 2:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: They just wanna be a single business owner, which is completely fair and fine.
- 2:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I'm the opposite.
- 2:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I love all the challenges.
- 2:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: That's my favorite part of owning a company.
- 2:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, also, with all the headaches.
- 3:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: There's, there's so many other headaches that come with that as well.
- 3:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, but I would say that a lot of what we're doing right now is less marketing a- in this exact moment.
- 3:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It's more fielding the calls, making sure that our students, whether they're in kindergarten or our students or our, our adults that we're working with,'cause we say that everyone's a learner and a student at whatever age they are.
- 3:26Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, we are trying to pair them with the best coach possible right now and get their team up to speed, whether it's with their psychologist, their psychiatrist, their neuropsych, their pediatrician, you name it.
- 3:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And then we will expand and do more marketing, which our first marketing event will probably happen in late September, early October.
- 3:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, as you all know, when progress reports
- 3:50Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 3:51Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: and parent-teacher conferences, and that's when there's a whole another flow.
- 3:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: So we're just bracing ourself for that moment and making sure we have the proper support on our team to be able to all these families to come and seek the help that they need.
- 4:07Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 4:07Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Well, one reason I wanted to have you on is that you are somebody who has a business.
- 4:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You're not just a solopreneur.
- 4:15Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You have a growing company that's a fairly new company and that has grown very fast, and I thought that would just be a different voice for people.
- 4:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Our listeners are folks who are all academic and executive function coaches or want to be coaches, and just to give them a vision of if you want to expand your business the way Jordan has with Just Start LA, this, uh, are, these are some of the joys of growing, and these are some of the pitfalls of growing.
- 4:45Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes, yes.
- 4:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Both exist at the same time.
- 4:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I feel like
- 4:48Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Right
- 4:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: second there's either like a very high high or a very low low, and thank God I have the most a- bomb team that I like rely on, and we're all in the same space.
- 4:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We have eight offices in our location,
- 5:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You do?
- 5:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes.
- 5:05Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Wow
- 5:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: square feet in Calabasas.
- 5:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, yeah, I guess I'll give a little story, um, because that's how this all started.
- 5:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: That's how Just Start started.
- 5:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, when I was in high school, I was doing just a lot of tutoring.
- 5:18Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like I enjoyed working with kids.
- 5:20Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I started off when I was in middle school as a mommy's helper.
- 5:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Then it turned into babysitting, and I was like,"Ugh, I don't really wanna be like wasting my Saturday nights or Sundays.
- 5:29Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like let me do stuff after school so I can make a little bit of money but still be with the kids and help in different ways." That was...
- 5:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I lived in Calabasas growing up, and then I got into UCLA.
- 5:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I went over the hill to the west side, and I was like,"Okay, wait, I still want to tutor." So I still tutored.
- 5:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I studied psychology, and I was doing another major which was specifically advocating for, um, health rights.
- 5:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh.
- 5:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Wait, wait, wait,
- 5:58Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: into
- 5:58Gretchen Wegner (she/her): hold on.
- 5:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): We need to pause there.
- 5:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): There's a major about health rights?
- 6:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: World Arts and Culture, and you can pick a focus or concentration, and that's what I focused on
- 6:09Gretchen Wegner (she/her): What school were you at?
- 6:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: UCLA.
- 6:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Uh, okay, maybe you just said that and I didn't track.
- 6:15Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay.
- 6:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: no problem at all.
- 6:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: No problem.
- 6:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: and I- but I thought the reason I was- I went in with world arts and cultures first, knowing that I was gonna pick up a double major, but I didn't know what,'cause I was pre-med when I went in.
- 6:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: then COVID hit my freshman year of college.
- 6:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Mm-hmm.
- 6:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I got sent home, back over the hill, and I was asked to do a lot of pod learning, and, uh, in garages and on Zoom, and I fell in love with it.
- 6:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I absolutely loved it.
- 6:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I expanded that, ended up having no more room, I started hiring my friends, but not taking...
- 6:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like, I was just, like, enjoying the managerial side of things.
- 6:57Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I wasn't taking anything.
- 6:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It wasn't like a real business yet.
- 7:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I just wanted to see what I enjoyed, and the families were actually giving me good feedback, so I could learn from it.
- 7:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: was also 20 years old at the time, and I ended up taking lots of classes, and I ended up graduating earlier.
- 7:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I ended up graduating in a little over three years.
- 7:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I was done with college.
- 7:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I was ready to be an entrepreneur, didn't know in what way.
- 7:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I thought I was gonna end up...
- 7:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I was interviewing at JPMorgan Chase to run their non- de- uh, nonprofit division, and I was possibly thinking about going to New York, everyone has a dream of going to New York.
- 7:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I've grown up in LA, I'm like,"Okay, I'll go to New York, I'll try the other coast." Um, no.
- 7:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: my dad sat me down.
- 7:42Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I was 21, little- like, closer to 22 at the time, and he's like,"You have a business here.
- 7:49Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: You love what you do.
- 7:51Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: don't you come, move back, live at home?" Even though all my friends were going to move to, like, different cities and s- into their own apartments, and they were, uh, like, seeking this independence, and I was going back to my roots, and it kind of felt like a step backwards while I was trying to be an adult.
- 8:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like, I was trying to adult in whatever way that meant for me.
- 8:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And I ended up moving home.
- 8:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I legally started the company.
- 8:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I was working with a lot of neurodivergent backgrounds, uh, for stu- my students,
- 8:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): OK
- 8:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I fell into the executive function skill path of this.
- 8:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And so I was a tutor that specialized in executive function skills, because I just, like, learned them.
- 8:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And then I thought I wanted to fall into educational therapy, so I talked to a few educational therapists that are in the area, they're like,"Jordan, everything you're saying has nothing to do with educational therapy, has everything to do with executive function coaching." And I really trust them, and I knew they weren't just telling me that because didn't want me to take the business from them,'cause there's enough to go around, as we all know.
- 8:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And so I was like,"Okay." So then I really focused on executive function skills.
- 8:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: As we all know, it's not...
- 9:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: W- we're not on any, under any boards, so I just really did a ton of research, and I just used tons of guinea pigs, um, which were my students.
- 9:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And I filled up in three months.
- 9:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I
- 9:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): What did full mean for you at that point?
- 9:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: had 20 kids.
- 9:17Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay, so and that's a big client load.
- 9:19Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I feel like that's on the high side.
- 9:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Correct.
- 9:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes.
- 9:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, I
- 9:23Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You're like,"Correct."
- 9:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I was someone who was fine working starting at 6:00 in the morning and going till about 10:30, 11:00 at night if my students could handle it, especially my older ones.
- 9:36Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I also had different time zones as well, so that helped.
- 9:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, so I was like,"Okay, wait, hold on.
- 9:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: There's obviously a need for executive function coaching," but I was like,"I don't even know who to turn to to hire next." Um, I opened up my office eight months later.
- 9:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, I was 22 years old.
- 9:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I was gonna ask how old you were at that time.
- 9:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 9:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Interesting
- 10:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, and I had the keys.
- 10:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I had 2,400 square feet.
- 10:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, my landlords or, yeah, my landlords for this building and the, uh, my tenant rep all agreed to this two-year deal.
- 10:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And I was like,"Okay." So I walked in.
- 10:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I've had a someone, a decorator c- an interior designer come and...
- 10:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: we couldn't really change much of the exterior or, and/or interior of the building because I didn't have any of those permits and I didn't wanna pay out of, more out of pocket.
- 10:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: we have terrible, still to this day, red carpet.
- 10:37Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Our kids love it.
- 10:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We hate it.
- 10:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, but this interior designer came in, did an amazing job, and we opened the doors two months later.
- 10:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, it was just
- 10:49Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And this was what year at this point?
- 10:51Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: is 2023,
- 10:53Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Three.
- 10:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: like
- 10:54Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 10:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 10:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay
- 10:57Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, yes, and I hired my first employee, um, w- was and is to this day my best friend.
- 11:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: She was my little, um, in my sorority.
- 11:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I've also grown up with her my whole entire life.
- 11:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, our family is our family friend.
- 11:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: She wanted to become an SLP,
- 11:17Gretchen Wegner (she/her): SLP being speech and language pathologist.
- 11:20Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Thank you so
- 11:20Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm
- 11:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, and she went onto her first day of...
- 11:26Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, sorry, not her first, not even her first day.
- 11:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: She went to go visit the campus that she got into for her grad program and had what she says is her quarterly life crisis, and hopefully she doesn't have another one.
- 11:36Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I, as the executive function coach and me and best friend and someone who just cares so much about her and wants her to be okay, um, I was like,"Let's just go to lunch." And so we went to lunch, and she...
- 11:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We had this whole conversation.
- 11:49Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: At the end of the conversation, I was like,"Are you interested in like, I don't know, like I think I wanna open up an office at this point.
- 11:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I have a whole tutoring team.
- 11:58Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: have-"
- 11:58Gretchen Wegner (she/her): are you interested, but this you already had the office, or this was before?
- 12:01Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You went back in time a little bit.
- 12:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay.
- 12:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: time a
- 12:04Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay
- 12:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, early, like three months before...
- 12:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Sorry, not even.
- 12:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I'm like, I can't even get all my dates right at this point.
- 12:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: But
- 12:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): That's okay.
- 12:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 12:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: was looking at leases just to see- Yeah like what was even out there,
- 12:18Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm
- 12:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I found something, this one, that I really loved.
- 12:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, it was very safe and homey, and I was going to sign the lease, but I kind of was like,"This is such a risk." Like if I'm the only person in 2,400 square feet for two years, this is a major problem.
- 12:35Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 12:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I'd figure it out, but like, just someone who like wants it immediately.
- 12:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I have terrible patience.
- 12:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, so I...
- 12:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We had this whole meeting.
- 12:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I kinda said,"I'm opening something.
- 12:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I would love for you to join along.
- 12:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I have zero clue how much I can pay you." She was working at a gym called Equinox at the time, 20 hours a week, um, doing their, um, and just that's obviously not what she wanted to do.
- 13:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: She really still loved working with kids.
- 13:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And I was like,"Why don't you...
- 13:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Why can- I'll pay you 20 hours a week.
- 13:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like I could, I could afford that.
- 13:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Let's do that for two months.
- 13:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Let's have a conversation." So she came.
- 13:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: She was doing all of our administration.
- 13:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: She share, we share a wall, so she was hearing a lot of like what I was doing.
- 13:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, she was managing our whole tutoring team so I could just manage my executive function coaching clients.
- 13:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And then within six weeks, I went to her office and I said, um, hope you're ready,'cause I'm about to offer you a full-time position.
- 13:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I need you quitting Equinox.
- 13:40Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I can't do this anymore." Um, and she's like,"I'm in." She dropped everything, and here we are now.
- 13:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I can't even count how many people we have, but I think we have eight coaches now that she manages.
- 13:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, we have team meetings every single week.
- 13:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, we're a full woman team.
- 14:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: it's amazing.
- 14:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It fills my heart every single
- 14:04Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mhm
- 14:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: genuinely love what I do, and I-
- 14:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And everyone's pretty young too,'cause full woman, that's one thing.
- 14:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But I think young people are a marginalized community
- 14:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Ja
- 14:17Gretchen Wegner (she/her): along with, uh, folks of color and along with women, et cetera, et cetera.
- 14:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yeah
- 14:21Gretchen Wegner (she/her): so are you, are all eight of you pretty young as well?
- 14:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes, we're all under the age of 27.
- 14:28Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 14:29Gretchen Wegner (she/her): That's huge
- 14:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: range from 22 to 27.
- 14:34Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 14:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: we believe that this, a lot of, we get calls.
- 14:37Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I mean, this is, you know, the imposter syndrome as well, as we all talk about.
- 14:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We get calls and like,"How many years have you been doing this?" And we're like,"Hmm, five at the max."
- 14:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Ja
- 14:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: not come to us, do not come to us if you want the years of experience.
- 14:51Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Right
- 14:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: guarantee and promise you is that the connection is there, and typically when there's that connection, we start to see that correction.
- 15:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And that we can, that we can implement into our sessions,
- 15:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 15:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: that we can actually be friends and mentors to your kids.
- 15:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: a lot of families come to us because there's been that argument that has happened at home, like the parent and the child going head-to-head.
- 15:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: So it's really, we've, we've...
- 15:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: The feedback that we have gotten some- and again, not for everybody.
- 15:20Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like I, my whole, I have a whole coaching cohort that I still talk to to this day, and they're all moms.
- 15:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And they have a huge book of clients.
- 15:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: But I know the clients that are coming to us are seeking something that's very niche.
- 15:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, so yes, do not come to us if you want years of experience.
- 15:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: But, um, we are a very young team, and
- 15:43Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Let's talk-- Let's actually pause here because just this morning in the Anti-Boring Learning Lab, we had our monthly all about students call, and there was a question from a new coach about setting expectations with parents.
- 15:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And as happens for most new coaches, and I'm guessing it probably happened to you back in the day, um, back in the day not so long ago, but in your early days, is we say yes to students and parents without setting clear expectations for how it's going to go, and then there might be an explosion or an implosion.
- 16:20Gretchen Wegner (she/her): A parent is dissatisfied, or a student is there who doesn't wanna be there or whatever, and then things go badly.
- 16:26Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But if you set clear expectations ahead of time, it's not like we can totally shift,
- 16:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Угу
- 16:35Gretchen Wegner (she/her): keep bad things from happening, but I do think it's helpful.
- 16:38Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And so do you literally say what you just said to parents before they pay any money?
- 16:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes.
- 16:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We have a 25, 30, you know, if I'm taking the intake call, it takes about an hour.
- 16:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, but Taya's the one that takes all of our intake calls.
- 16:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: They're
- 16:52Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 16:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: minutes, 30 minutes.
- 16:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It's a complimentary intake call where we go through everything, um, that's expected of them, that they should be expecting of us.
- 17:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Uh, we get all the information about the child, the family, um, if there's anyone else on their team that they would want us talking to.
- 17:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: So we're very clear off the bat.
- 17:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I will say I was not clear two, three years ago.
- 17:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I had what you were exactly talking about, like the explosion that happens, whether it's pa- it's mostly the parents being a little bit disappointed because it's,
- 17:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 17:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I, I, I say executive function coaching a luxury.
- 17:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like it's so nice to have an executive function coach.
- 17:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It's not covered by insurance.
- 17:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yes, we can super bill, but there's high expectations when there's a lot of money on the line, and it's really important, I tell my team over and over again, to be over-communicative.
- 17:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: You can never not y- you can never not be too over-communicative, and so that is critical, and we say that in our weekly meetings all the time.
- 17:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: If you feel like the parent can question what you're saying, then you better explain it better.
- 17:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Uhum.
- 18:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: um, yes, I would say that I took a lot of what you would call red flag families because I wanted to fill our load, and I wanted to have more coaches, and that's the business side of my brain.
- 18:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: But I also realized that actually put me in a terrible place as a business owner because now I'm hiring more coaches, but I don't have enough students for them,
- 18:24Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 18:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: it just
- 18:26Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Because you're doing a better job setting expectations and not taking on those families, but it, it does impact the number of clients that your coaches have.
- 18:33Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But then it also creates an opening for, like right now, when we're, we're talking on September 9th.
- 18:39Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I don't know when this is gonna come out.
- 18:41Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But, um, but we-- You and I already know, we said this before we hit recording, that end of September to early October, when the first progress reports come out, there's going to be an explosion, in a good way for us, of students needing and looking for support.
- 18:57Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And so if you take on those red flag families, I love just calling them that,
- 19:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Yeah,
- 19:02Gretchen Wegner (she/her): who have...
- 19:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah, they are, for whatever reason, and it's, it's not even a judgment to them, but there are ways in which they're just not ready or just not motivated to participate fully in the coaching process.
- 19:15Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Um, but if you take those now, then you don't have as much room for the students who are motivated, who are gonna be willing when end of September, October hits
- 19:23Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Correct.
- 19:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: And I would say a big, a great thing, like a advice that I would give to new coaches or people starting companies is be awa- very aware as to what lane you stay in.
- 19:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: So I think some of us try to tap into too many things and wear too many hats, and then now our specialty is now way too broad, and people don't know why they're coming to you.
- 19:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, so a big thing with our intake calls is maybe we're not the first step right now.
- 19:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Maybe it is more of a mental health issue or whatever we're, like, hearing, and maybe we should refer out to a therapist.
- 20:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We have so many referrals on our roster that we fully trust and have meetings with every single year, so we're able to refer them out to there.
- 20:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Maybe they don't have a neuropsych report, and you're expressing or explaining a lot of things that might show up in a neuropsych report, so what is the best first step?
- 20:18Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Is it a behavioral problem?
- 20:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like a behavioral problem sh- we're not the first step.
- 20:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It should be, like, ABA.
- 20:23Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: So I think our team
- 20:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): When, when you say ABA, just say what that means for folks who may not know
- 20:29Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: a behavioral, um, now I'm, like, blank.
- 20:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Applied behavioral
- 20:34Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay.
- 20:34Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But a- a person who can work specifically with a student's behaviors.
- 20:39Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I can't think of what it stands for either
- 20:40Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I like just, I'm like applied behavioral associate, I think.
- 20:44Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Uh-huh.
- 20:45Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: along those lines.
- 20:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: But yes, like more
- 20:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Especially for autism, students with autism and that level.
- 20:51Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: yes,
- 20:51Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm
- 20:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: behavioral situation in schools or outside of
- 20:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): उहम्म
- 20:57Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: pulling out hair, all, all of it.
- 20:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: There's obviously anxiety with it, uh, as well, and there could be a learning challenge in there as well that'll show up on the neuro psych report, but we just have to make sure all of that is taken care of before they come here.
- 21:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: I always love to say that executive function coaching is, like, the present on top...
- 21:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Sorry, the bow on top of the present, um, where we're, like, packing the...
- 21:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We're finishing off this package and, like, sending it off into the world, and we're not trying to create this independent...
- 21:23Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We're trying to create s- my God, I'm, like, can't even talk right now.
- 21:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: We're cr- want to create independence
- 21:28Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 21:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: the behavior.
- 21:29Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes
- 21:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: always tell my kids, like,"I love you, but, like, I don't wanna see you in a year.
- 21:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, it's not because...
- 21:36Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It's just because I love you so much that I don't wanna see you, and you're capable
- 21:39Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 21:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: all by yourself.
- 21:40Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like, we just need to figure out what your superpowers are right now." yeah, I,
- 21:45Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 21:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: if that answered your
- 21:47Gretchen Wegner (she/her): It does
- 21:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: that, yes, I think we grab as many as possible at the beginning, but one thing I can for sure promise, and I see this not only with our business but with the cohort that I speak to all the time, they come.
- 22:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Like, the right families come at the right time.
- 22:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: So just the patience is what's really key, and knowing that, yes, it's all the marketing, but it's also showing face.
- 22:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: It's also doing these types of podcasts and other speaking engagements that, as we were talking about before this call, I don't really love at all.
- 22:20Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um-
- 22:20Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You're doing pretty good though, y'all, don't you think?
- 22:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Given she doesn't love him, I think you're doing pretty good.
- 22:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: my God.
- 22:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Thank you.
- 22:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: Um, you can see like the words are like coming out.
- 22:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: My brain's like processing so quickly, but I'm like,"Okay, well now my is not to, up to par." But yeah, so I think it's just, um...
- 22:36Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: That's my biggest takeaway from like start- where the business started with the, type of clients that we had versus where we are today,
- 22:45Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 22:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 22:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA: over two years, so
- 22:49Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I mean, I can't believe how fast you've grown.
- 22:52Gretchen Wegner (she/her): It's clear that you have a deep love for the business part of things, and not, not everybody does.
- 22:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So you are blessed to have the chutzpah as, as some folks say.
- 23:06Gretchen Wegner (she/her): As well as it sounds like actually a lot of your executive function skills are online.
- 23:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Would you say that?
- 23:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Would you say that?
- 23:14Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Or would you say that you feel really challenged by your own executive function capacity?
- 23:18Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So I was diagnosed with ADHD my junior year of high school, and this kind of came as a shock, but kind of not.
- 23:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I don't think my parents really understood what, like, ADHD was.
- 23:31Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm.
- 23:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): my dad for sure has ADHD.
- 23:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): He has not been tested.
- 23:36Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, we've done a lot of, like, just going back as to what stru-stru- what were struggles for me, what were struggles for him.
- 23:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
- 23:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): My dad's also an entrepreneur himself, and so I think that I just picked up a, on a lot of behaviors.
- 23:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Uh, and, like, you know, as we, as, as we all know, that we soak up what our parents do as we're growing up.
- 24:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We're little
- 24:01Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Угу
- 24:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): for better or for worse.
- 24:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And so now that we're both in...
- 24:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We're actually in this s- something called EO, which is entrepreneurship organization, and a lot of ADHD speakers come to that.
- 24:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I would say at each one of these, there's only a few people that are, were not diagnosed with ADHD or are not diagnosed with ADHD to this day.
- 24:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And so it's just very interesting that I was diagnosed my junior year.
- 24:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But as we know, as I said, I think I already said this, but fly under the radar for the longest time, so I had to figure it out for myself.
- 24:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I had all the tutors, but executive function coaches, like, did not exist.
- 24:42Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): At, at least I don't think they did.
- 24:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Maybe educa- I know educational therapists did.
- 24:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But executive function coaches are different than educational therapists.
- 24:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And I went off to college, and I had to fend for myself.
- 24:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I had my, uh, accommodations and my
- 25:00Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 25:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): hand at
- 25:01Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm
- 25:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): really big school.
- 25:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And my, one of my good friends who was older than me was like,"You're never gonna get these accommodations." It took me a year.
- 25:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And then I
- 25:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh
- 25:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): "Okay, good to know.
- 25:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So I'm gonna walk in very assertive and say,'Here's my ac- here are my, here's my neuropsych report.
- 25:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Here are the accommodations I'm requesting.
- 25:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I will not be leaving until you give me the accommodations that I need.
- 25:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I will not survive at a school like this.' Um, this, I picked this school'cause I was down the street.
- 25:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's a great school.
- 25:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It had the majors that I wanted, but I need these accommodations to succeed here." Uh, I got my accommodations within one day.
- 25:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, and I knew from that moment that I was gonna be able to get into the classes that I want, succeed in the classes that I was in.
- 25:49Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I had the testing time that I needed, um, to succeed, and I think that has given me a huge advantage in this company.
- 26:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, there's days, let me tell you, that my executive dysfunction gets in the
- 26:06Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 26:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): As my mom would say if she was on any of these calls, I have great executive function skills in the office, maybe with my calendar outside with social plans, but forget about it if you go into, like, my room.
- 26:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's,
- 26:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I, I don't even wanna show.
- 26:23Gretchen Wegner (she/her): This is why I'm blurred out right here,'cause my own room is a mess.
- 26:27Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I probably have ADHD too
- 26:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Exactly.
- 26:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So I just, you know, s- like, those things that work for me don't work for many others.
- 26:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like, I need a lot out in front of
- 26:37Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 26:37Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): need to see it.
- 26:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I think my mom growing up was always like,"More storage, more drawers,
- 26:43Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 26:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): space" Mm-hmm.
- 26:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And that's not what works for me.
- 26:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I
- 26:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): For you, yeah
- 26:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): all out.
- 26:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like, my bathroom countertop very organized because I organize it the way I want to.
- 26:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I know where everything is.
- 26:57Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But if someone el- If
- 26:57Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But it's all visible.
- 26:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 26:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): else walked in there, they'd be like,"What are you doing?" Like,"How are you living like this?" I'm really scared when I have my own family one day, but I'll work on that'cause I need to model good behavior.
- 27:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, but I would say that most days I have pretty good executive function skills, strength in the office and just as a business owner.
- 27:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But there are those days, as we all know, that we try to pack so much into our schedule, and then there's a fel- a sense of shame that I didn't
- 27:33Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Угу
- 27:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I'm like,"How'd I not, how'd I not accomplish all this?" Like, I had the time for it.
- 27:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I estimated it really well.
- 27:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I gave myself those buffers, and I still wasn't able to do it'cause something else got in the way, or I had to take a parent call, or there was a, what I call an executive function emergency.
- 27:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like, I feel like
- 27:52Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Угу.
- 27:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): EF coach,
- 27:54Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Угу.
- 27:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): a
- 27:55Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Угу
- 27:58Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): yeah, I would say, I guess it can go both ways, that I have great executive function skills and I have dis- uh, executive dysfunction.
- 28:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Just ask me on any given second of each day
- 28:09Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I think that's pretty, uh, pretty normal.
- 28:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yeah
- 28:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): uh, one thing I just wanted to say about your, your bathroom counter,'cause you said,"Oh, when I have a family someday, I need to model good behavior." But good behavior does not necessarily mean a clean countertop, right?
- 28:23Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Like, good behavior could mean knowing yourself and what you need, and maybe there are several sinks, and yours is yours, and nobody else touches it, and other people get to organize theirs the way they need to.
- 28:33Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And that self-knowledge and setting up the system is what good behavior is.
- 28:40Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Correct.
- 28:40Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): You're, you're very right.
- 28:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yes, I completely agree.
- 28:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): That's why I educate a lot of, like, parents on,'cause I'm like,"Your way might not be the best way, and probably is not
- 28:47Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Right
- 28:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): for your child.
- 28:49Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But if they're getting it done and it, it works for them, then, like, leave it.
- 28:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like, do not cause an argument over this.
- 28:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like,
- 28:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 28:57Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 28:57Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Well, and I wanted to bring that up because I see it all the time with the educators in the Anti-Boring Learning Lab, where we can be one way with our clients, but there, our own, um, our own negative self-talk and our own neurodivergence.
- 29:14Gretchen Wegner (she/her): What's the word I'm looking for?
- 29:15Gretchen Wegner (she/her): It's like, it's like that, that belied what you said there, belied that you are harder on yourself than you are with your students, and that's not, that's not a bad thing.
- 29:27Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Just coaches are, and it's why we depend on having community so we can support ourselves
- 29:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yes, for
- 29:35Gretchen Wegner (she/her): in our own negative self-talk while we're supporting students
- 29:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): That's why I love your, your community that you've built.
- 29:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I think it's, um, it's wonderful.
- 29:45Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's amazing, and I know that I put all my coaches through your community for a month, two months, three months, and then we have obviously our supplement to that.
- 29:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But I think community is critical, and that's
- 29:58Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 29:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I love having a huge team.
- 30:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And when I say huge, it's a pretty decent sized team.
- 30:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's not a massive team.
- 30:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But we have a community, and it's collaborative, and we're
- 30:09Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Uhum.
- 30:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): to support one another.
- 30:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And
- 30:11Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Uhum
- 30:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): wanna...
- 30:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): That isolation is what's really difficult, and I think some of us that have businesses that are, w- what you were saying, like the sole entrepreneurs,
- 30:21Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 30:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): it's, it's sometimes daunting.
- 30:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): As I said, it's isolating, and we kind of want to find a way to build that community because we're all experiencing it every single day and you don't wanna go through it alone.
- 30:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And having that space to talk it out and feel heard is critical
- 30:40Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Is so critical.
- 30:41Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 30:42Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And so I do wanna talk actually about training, because this is something that comes up over and over and over with business owners like yourself who reach out to me, who have several coaches who work alongside them in their companies.
- 30:57Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And like, how the heck do you figure out how to train people, especially when they're working as independent contractors?
- 31:05Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Although that brings up, I don't know if yours are employees or independent contractors, so that's one topic.
- 31:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But I'd love for you to talk about, yes, you use us, so talk about what does the lab provide in terms of training that you find important, and then also what do you do to supplement what's not in the lab that you think is important as well?
- 31:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yeah, I would say, I guess, yeah, twofold.
- 31:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So our coaches are all, are all hourly employees,
- 31:33Gretchen Wegner (she/her): OK
- 31:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): um, just because we're giving them our, just our executive function toolbox or what, what you're talking about, the supplement.
- 31:42Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So legally they're employees,'cause we're teaching them what we want them to teach their students, or at least incorporate into their model.
- 31:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Not all of our coaches have the same approach.
- 31:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I don't want that.
- 31:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I would say I'm definitely more on the sterner side of our coaches, and we have some more soft-spoken, nurturing individuals,
- 32:05Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 32:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): because not everyone vibes with me, not everyone vibes with them.
- 32:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So that's part of when Taya's having his inquiry calls, it's like, okay, what, what personality does your child respond to best or do you respond to best?
- 32:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It depends on who we're coaching.
- 32:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): they're hourly employees, uh, or full-time employees if they're doing more than just executive function coaching on our team.
- 32:29Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, then with the anti-learning boring, anti-boring learning lab, and
- 32:37Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Too
- 32:37Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): like,"What is the order?" Um, I'm like, sometimes I literally, they all, my whole team makes fun of me, and I'm like,"Hey, whatever, it doesn't matter." Just like, you know what I'm trying to say.
- 32:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I would say a lot of what we don't cover i- are the study skills
- 32:52Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mhm.
- 32:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): how to study and the why behind studying and why it's important, um, to maybe start in advance in different ways.
- 33:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And um, I wasn't an education major.
- 33:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Uh, Taya was, and so obviously there's some parts that she could pull as well, but that's not my specialty, nor do I want it to be.
- 33:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And so I feel like I, we really use your program for that specifically and also for them to have that experience of, of watching the mini lectures and then writing things out or practicing, um, doing a coaching session and what that would look like.
- 33:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Uh, they, they do it on o- like other coaches, and we provide feedback, so it's kind of happening in your community but also outside in our
- 33:39Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Right.
- 33:40Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 33:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And then what we've really touched on is a lot of the task initiation, the time management, uh, the emotional regulation, the, uh, how to...
- 33:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like what we're also teaching our, our, um, coaches is how to have those family team meetings,
- 33:59Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 34:00Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): how to give some news that maybe is not something they wanna hear.
- 34:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, thought, I literally had to fire my first kiddo last week.
- 34:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um,
- 34:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Really?
- 34:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Only, like it took you this long to fire your first kiddo?
- 34:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I just think
- 34:17Gretchen Wegner (she/her): That's pretty good, Jordan.
- 34:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's like my first, like my,
- 34:21Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Ja.
- 34:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): um, we've fired other kids, but my first, and it was like the hardest thing.
- 34:26Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But we're just teaching them how...
- 34:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like, there's a lot, it's a 13-week module that we go through, so it's very specific into like what our Just Start approach is, and the families that seek us out, what they're looking for.
- 34:39Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 34:41Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So 13 modules is y- is your training modules that you have your staff go through?
- 34:45Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Correct.
- 34:45Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So while
- 34:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 34:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay.
- 34:48Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 34:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): going through ours.
- 34:49Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 34:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): on top of that, they meet with, um, our training coach who is designated to them to go through meetings twice a week to cover the modules, also ask any questions, and then do some supervision as to this, like doing, um...
- 35:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Now I'm blanking on the name right now, and this is like terrible.
- 35:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But, um, you know what I'm trying to say.
- 35:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, it's, um, like when the live, if a student was to, uh, a cour- not a course.
- 35:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, it starts with a C and I can't even think of it right now.
- 35:24Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Totally fine
- 35:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): if you were to...
- 35:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We give them a case study.
- 35:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Oh my gosh.
- 35:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I was like,
- 35:31Gretchen Wegner (she/her): A
- 35:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): is it?"
- 35:32Gretchen Wegner (she/her): case study
- 35:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I got it.
- 35:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Oh my God, my brain.
- 35:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Can you tell?
- 35:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like I literally have, I woke up at 5:00 this morning and I was like,"Okay, what does my day look like?"
- 35:40Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Honey, it is the beginning of the school year, and I'm feeling it too, so do not sweat it.
- 35:44Gretchen Wegner (she/her): We all- we're all feeling...
- 35:46Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Even the listeners are like,"Oh, girl, I feel you."
- 35:49Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I'm like,"What is that word?" Case study.
- 35:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We give them case study.
- 35:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So if your child, you know, we d- we gave them basically an intake call.
- 35:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): What would you do in the first session?
- 35:58Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): How would you approach this case?
- 35:59Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And then what would you, how would you, would the parents be on board, depending on the age?
- 36:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Also, what would their involvement look like?
- 36:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): That sort of thing.
- 36:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Mm-hmm.
- 36:08Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 36:08Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): kind of how we supplement what you provide, which is amazing.
- 36:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): You have an awesome curriculum.
- 36:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's just our family, we see that our families need a little bit more,
- 36:20Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 36:20Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): when it
- 36:21Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And you're not the only one.
- 36:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I would say we have five or six right now companies inside the lab who use us for the study skills and for general coaching.
- 36:31Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Like the Academic Coaching 101 module is very useful for generally speaking, how do you ask good coaching questions and how do you think through decision-making in executive function and academic coaching environments?
- 36:43Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But it makes total sense that you would need to fill in more blanks to how your company works
- 36:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): it's just taken us time.
- 36:52Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): As it all goes back to
- 36:54Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 36:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I, we didn't sit down.
- 36:57Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We spent, we took the whole entire summer off, which is shocking that I ever took the summer off,
- 37:02Gretchen Wegner (she/her): That's great.
- 37:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): business instead of in the business.
- 37:05Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh, wait, so you didn't quite take it off.
- 37:07Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You just took it off from coaching.
- 37:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I did not.
- 37:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Correct.
- 37:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We did
- 37:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay
- 37:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): have a...
- 37:11Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, no, I did not take the summer off.
- 37:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Are you crazy?
- 37:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I have, like, rent to pay for and also employees.
- 37:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I was like,"No, I cannot do this." But could do everything to work on the business and the system.
- 37:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): The executive functioning within our company,
- 37:24Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 37:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): summer,
- 37:26Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Great
- 37:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): that's why we have fully...
- 37:29Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We're gonna, like, fully launch something in, like, this semester leading up to January.
- 37:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So it's, it's just, it's important for our coaches and our families because just of the clients that come to us.
- 37:41Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So I
- 37:42Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 37:42Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): also important for even the listeners to know it's, not one way or the highway.
- 37:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's like you're teaching them the, the foundation,
- 37:50Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Угу
- 37:51Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): incorporate into that for their specific clientele
- 37:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yes.
- 37:56Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Now, I know we need to wrap up'cause you have to run to another meeting.
- 38:00Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Is it a session, by the way, or a
- 38:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): especially my youngest
- 38:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): s-
- 38:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): He's
- 38:04Gretchen Wegner (she/her): your youngest kiddo
- 38:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I started with him when he was in first grade.
- 38:07Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Now he's in fourth grade,
- 38:08Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Ah, okay.
- 38:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yes.
- 38:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yeah.
- 38:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): so I'm
- 38:12Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah
- 38:12Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): yeah, he, and I know he's gonna like barge.
- 38:14Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I locked my door,'cause I know he's like the...
- 38:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And I have Do Not Disturb on the outside, because he's someone who likes to barge through and be like,"I'm here." And I'm like,"Hi."
- 38:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Good.
- 38:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Well, we'll, we'll get you done so that you can unlock the door and let him barge in, although I think that would've been fun to hear
- 38:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I know.
- 38:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It would've been funny
- 38:34Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But I do have, so just a few last questions that we can go quickly with that I know listeners are probably thinking.
- 38:40Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So those who are business owners who are listening probably wanna know, like, so if they're hourly employees, do you pay them for every hour that they're training?
- 38:49Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Or what kind of an...
- 38:50Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Because my, mine could take up to 40 hours to work through a loan, and that's expensive to pay an employee 40 hours.
- 38:58Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So do you pay them by the hour, or do you have a different agreement with them?
- 39:01Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We have a different agreement.
- 39:03Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So when they're training, it's completely different.
- 39:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's basically how are you gonna vibe even within our team.
- 39:09Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, this whole process, my commitment is obviously to pay for your training, and I also pay for our tr- uh, the person who is training the individual.
- 39:20Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, but they're not paid.
- 39:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm
- 39:23Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): they're not paid.
- 39:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But the compensation comes to them when they're on the team, and then they have goals that they could hit, and they can get increases, and they get gifts and other incentives
- 39:35Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Uhum, uhum.
- 39:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): as I say, I, I treat them just as if I were to treat my students of
- 39:42Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 39:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We set short-term and long-term goals.
- 39:45Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): If you achieve them, there's something associated with them.
- 39:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, so everyone's treated the
- 39:50Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Great
- 39:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We actually just incorporated this year doing acknowledge...
- 39:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We do cards every single week, and we, um, acknowledge one coach, and then we have a whole tutoring team still, so we acknowledge those tutors, and then they get a gift at the end as well.
- 40:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So
- 40:06Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So you have some real systems in place to motivate folks.
- 40:09Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Because that's another issue that I know larger business owners have is like, if I pay for your training and then you come in and get, and work for me for six months and then leave, like there's often a lot of turnover.
- 40:22Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But it sounds like you have some very...
- 40:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): A, I think you have friends and family members who are coming in, so they're probably not gonna turnover as quickly necessarily.
- 40:31Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Is that true?
- 40:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Correct.
- 40:33Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Yes, that's true.
- 40:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, also it's, we have a two-year verbal commitment.
- 40:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Typically, we're pulling people that are in school still.
- 40:42Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 40:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): sorry, not
- 40:44Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 40:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): grad.
- 40:45Gretchen Wegner (she/her): students are amazing, amazing coaches
- 40:48Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So they're typically getting their MFTs or their ed- something in education, or a clinical psych or their PsyDs.
- 40:54Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So they stay with us because they're getting that experience, and they're gaining so much value from being in this community.
- 41:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): And then we help them on the outside too.
- 41:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Like, we pay for, when I'm going with a, my, with Taya to events, we're like,"Hey, who wants to come?
- 41:13Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): We'll pay for those events."
- 41:15Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Aha
- 41:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): experience talking to other psychologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychs, pediatricians, like whatever they're interested in,
- 41:21Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Right
- 41:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): occupational therapists.
- 41:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So they gain value from those as well.
- 41:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 41:25Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So there, it sounds like you've just got a number of different incentive systems built in that aren't, like, disrespectful incentives,'cause I think sometimes those incentives are like,"What?
- 41:33Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You think I'm gonna be motivated by that?" But you've really found what helps drive the folks to wanna make the most of their experience while they're with you, and it also sounds like you're willing to bless and release them in two years, too.
- 41:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): That's
- 41:47Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 41:49Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Yeah.
- 41:50Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Um, oh, shoot.
- 41:51Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I had one more question that I forgot, so I'm gonna ask this one while I try and remember it.
- 41:54Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Do you actually remember our first moment where we...
- 41:58Gretchen Wegner (she/her): where you talked and I heard you?
- 42:01Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Like, you were in a webinar.
- 42:03Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Do you remember?
- 42:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): do remember I was in my kitchen.
- 42:05Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I don't know what I said.
- 42:08Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I didn't remember you were in your kitchen, but I think it was you.
- 42:11Gretchen Wegner (she/her): You were like, it was one of my free webinars, I think, and you, you were like,"What do you do if a high school student throws himself on the floor and has a tantrum?" Or something like that, and won't leave or something.
- 42:24Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Do you remember that?
- 42:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I kind of do, and I've had so many of those moments, uh, like that day on, so I don't know exactly which moment you're talking about.
- 42:35Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But I still have that, most likely that kid to this day
- 42:40Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh, interesting.
- 42:42Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So that kid did put up a fuss, but you've worked some things out with them in the meantime
- 42:47Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): strikes you're out policy personally.
- 42:50Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I try to incorporate into the company but they don't, some people don't agree with it, which is completely okay.
- 42:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I do, so I took a pause with him for a year,
- 43:01Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mhm.
- 43:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): back.
- 43:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): It's been like six months or something along those lines, but there was agreements that were set, there was a constitution written, it was signed, it
- 43:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Wow.
- 43:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): yeah.
- 43:11Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And is he doing okay now?
- 43:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Who you think that might be?
- 43:14Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Is he, like, he's-
- 43:15Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): yes, he's doing, um, really well.
- 43:17Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): He sees me twice a week now.
- 43:19Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, he's the one that decided to come.
- 43:21Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): He's the one that reached out to me, the parents didn't.
- 43:24Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): yeah,
- 43:24Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Oh, congratulations.
- 43:26Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): so thank you.
- 43:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Thank you.
- 43:27Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So yes,
- 43:27Gretchen Wegner (she/her): It's
- 43:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): proud.
- 43:28Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I've had some crazy cases since then, but we, that's,
- 43:34Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And
- 43:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): a bit off topic
- 43:35Gretchen Wegner (she/her): it's, it's another question we talk about a lot in the Anti-Boring Learning Lab is like, like you, you brought up firing a client.
- 43:41Gretchen Wegner (she/her): For like when do you let a client go, and when do you stick with them?
- 43:45Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Especially if you did take on a family that maybe was against some of your intuition, and sometimes those families do end up being the best families if you stick with it.
- 43:54Gretchen Wegner (she/her): They drain your energy for a while, while you're trying to figure out how to work with their system and then with yours, but it, it can really work out in the case that you shared.
- 44:04Gretchen Wegner (she/her): okay, I remember the question.
- 44:06Gretchen Wegner (she/her): So, oh, shoot, I just remembered it, and then I just forgot it.
- 44:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): No, I do got it.
- 44:10Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I got it, I got it, I got it.
- 44:13Gretchen Wegner (she/her): When you were building the business, how, like how did...
- 44:16Gretchen Wegner (she/her): How could you afford to pay for like the building when you got it?
- 44:19Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Were your parents helping you out, or did you have savings?
- 44:21Gretchen Wegner (she/her): And if this is too much, you don't have to share it, but I think listeners are wondering.
- 44:26Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I'll share.
- 44:26Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I've been saving since I was 11 years old.
- 44:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I...
- 44:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I have.
- 44:32Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): As we go back, my dad's in finance.
- 44:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): That's, his entrepreneurial side is in finance.
- 44:37Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I
- 44:37Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Okay
- 44:38Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): gonna take over that business, and that's why I was going down to JP Morgan, then I was gonna get experience, then I
- 44:42Gretchen Wegner (she/her): I see
- 44:43Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Uh, whatever.
- 44:44Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So he- I'm very money conscious, for sure.
- 44:49Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I'm not a big spender, but I've always been like,"Okay, I've alwa- I wanna start a business.
- 44:55Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I don't know what that's gonna look like and when that's gonna start, but let me start putting money away." And it just grew over time.
- 45:02Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I actually have started multiple companies with my ADHD students, because I believe that you can start as early as possible.
- 45:10Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So I have many middle schoolers who have their own businesses, and I'm like,"Save 50%, gave 20 to charity." Like, that's what I was taught my whole entire life, and I still believe in that to this day.
- 45:22Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, so yes, I- it was all saving.
- 45:25Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): My parents helped by, like, l- allowing me to go back home and live there, um, so I
- 45:30Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Right.
- 45:30Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): rents.
- 45:31Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So yes,
- 45:31Gretchen Wegner (she/her): But it was your own money that paid for all of it.
- 45:34Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): uh,
- 45:34Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Amazing, Jordan
- 45:36Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): out any loans.
- 45:37Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): I am very proud to say that.
- 45:39Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, I pay everything on time.
- 45:42Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, you know, ADHD sometimes it's all, like, auto.
- 45:46Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, so I have an accountant, I have a lawyer, I have all the stuff in place.
- 45:53Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): But yes, I pay for that myself.
- 45:55Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 45:56Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): listen, we all know owning a company, you only take a certain percent, um, or amount, and you're putting the rest into the company.
- 46:04Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): So it's not like I'm rolling in the dough.
- 46:06Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): Um, but I'm constantly reinvesting in something that I love with the goal of one day, you know, being able to step back and just oversee the whole entire thing, but that might
- 46:16Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
- 46:16Jordyn Shapiro - Just Start LA (2): 20 years
- 46:18Gretchen Wegner (she/her): Mm-hmm.
