- 0:00Welcome to loud and lifted quick lifts the bite
- 0:03-sized boost you didn't know you needed I'm your
- 0:05host Betsy ham and in less time than it takes
- 0:08to order your coffee We're diving deeper into
- 0:10the conversations that got us thinking feeling
- 0:12and fired up from a previous episode Because
- 0:15sometimes you just need an extra spark Let's
- 0:27dive more into my conversation with Kim Schaller
- 0:29While there are many great takeaways, three stood
- 0:32out that we can take action on this week. First
- 0:35up, clear the path. Don't just walk it. As we
- 0:39talked about, Kim didn't just climb the ladder.
- 0:41She sent it back down for others. Success isn't
- 0:44just about you. It's about who's coming with
- 0:46you or after you. I have to be honest, in case
- 0:49you haven't caught on, this is probably one of
- 0:50my biggest pet peeves is when women don't support
- 0:53other women. And a lot of times it comes down
- 0:55to the scarcity mindset. And that's where individuals
- 0:58perceive resources, including success, are limited
- 1:02or finite. Of course, this is crazy. We're not
- 1:05in competition. And because insecurities, confidence
- 1:08issues come into play, it tends to be the driver
- 1:11behind this. Now, we're certainly not going to
- 1:13solve this in this 10 minute episode of what
- 1:15to do about insecurities and confidence. But
- 1:17what we can do is start taking small steps to
- 1:20be more supportive of each other. If you're a
- 1:22leader of a team, you need your team to do well
- 1:24in order for you to be able to continue to grow.
- 1:27And even if you don't have people reporting to
- 1:29you, the people around you need to have their
- 1:32support and they need to have yours. I've seen
- 1:34this. lack of support at every level, whether
- 1:38it's at the entry level and people are just getting
- 1:40started or even at the CEO level. I'd certainly
- 1:43experienced that as a CEO where maybe other women
- 1:46CEOs weren't supportive. What are we possibly
- 1:48in competition for? We both have the title. We
- 1:51both have these great jobs. So what's the concern?
- 1:54And I will say this is where men do really well
- 1:57and this goes back to I think how the boys club
- 1:59gets started Men tend to support each other.
- 2:02They recommend each other They talk about each
- 2:05other in a positive light and maybe sometimes
- 2:07they're loyal to a fault But at the end of the
- 2:09day they are taking the actions in public to
- 2:13be able to support each other in order to grow
- 2:16now the other piece of this too is I think as
- 2:18women the comments that we say about each other
- 2:21are nasty and I have a hundred percent dealt
- 2:25with this in the past where I'm attacked and
- 2:28it's okay if someone doesn't like me or doesn't
- 2:30like my style. The way that they attack you from
- 2:33a very personal issue is very devastating. Things
- 2:37that women will say about other women in positions
- 2:40of power they would never say about men. They
- 2:42would never say about physical appearance or
- 2:46why you got your job or what you're good at.
- 2:49and never go over your head because you are a
- 2:51woman. The way that women treat each other has
- 2:54been, I have experienced, has been just absolutely
- 2:57nasty. And I guarantee you, if it was a man who
- 3:00was in those positions and in those situations,
- 3:02he would never would have been handled that way.
- 3:04And again, this wasn't from them. This was from
- 3:06other women in my life. So. I will get off my
- 3:10soapbox because I could go on for this one for
- 3:12hours. But at the end of the day, let's support
- 3:15each other. The whole freaking point of my podcast,
- 3:17right, is how do we be more supportive? So what
- 3:19can you do? It's easier said than done. I get
- 3:21that. Some people struggle with this, but let's
- 3:24take little steps. So today, this week, this
- 3:27month, be intentional about recommending or advocating
- 3:30for another woman when she's not in the room.
- 3:33Maybe it's suggesting someone to be part of a
- 3:35project or a panel or a promotion, or maybe it's
- 3:38just talking positively about someone on your
- 3:41team or another team to a superior. It's little
- 3:45actions like that, but they go a long way. By
- 3:48the way, if you're not doing this and you think
- 3:50that people don't notice, You're wrong. When
- 3:53you don't support other women, everybody catches
- 3:55onto that, not just women, but men. They realize
- 3:58this selfish, self -consumed behavior, and it's
- 4:02not a good look. It's not going to help you grow
- 4:04and to be able to succeed when people are going
- 4:07to catch on to the fact that you're too insecure
- 4:09to support those around you. So back to the action
- 4:12item. I'm going to stop off of this one, but
- 4:14be intentional about supporting other women when
- 4:17she's not in the room. Alright, opportunity number
- 4:19two to focus on is you got to step up and you
- 4:23got to get outside your comfort zone. I love
- 4:25that Kim talked about telling people that when
- 4:27they're at a networking event that they needed
- 4:29to go talk to the executives in the room, they
- 4:31needed that exposure. One of the biggest takeaways
- 4:34I have had from Kim over the 20 some years is
- 4:37in fact that something I carried on to my teams
- 4:40through the years of, hey, if you're at an event,
- 4:42go talk to somebody you don't know, get away
- 4:44from your friends. And events are one thing,
- 4:46but this can go in your day to day. Say you're
- 4:48in an office setting and you have a lunch room.
- 4:51Say hi to the person while you're getting your
- 4:54coffee. Maybe it's an executive, maybe it's just
- 4:56somebody in a different department, but put yourself
- 4:59out there and get that exposure in order for
- 5:02people to know who you are. Exposure is huge
- 5:04and raising your hand in meetings, volunteering
- 5:07for projects, maybe suggesting that you're be
- 5:10part of a committee. It's just putting yourself
- 5:12out there and getting that exposure. I think
- 5:14the other piece of this that's so simple goes
- 5:16back to one of the items in the whole Lean In
- 5:20book, right? And that's about having a seat at
- 5:22the table. And so often I have experienced this
- 5:25throughout my entire career. And any woman, young
- 5:27woman, especially on my team, know that I will
- 5:30call them out for this. You go into a conference
- 5:31room, there's seats at the table, there's seats
- 5:34in the back. Women tend to just go grab the seat
- 5:37in the back, sit at the fricking table. It's
- 5:39pretty easy. Stealing that one from Linen, but
- 5:41I think that is so true. There's a lot of validity
- 5:44to that. So you want the opportunity, you got
- 5:47to step up. And that includes talking to people,
- 5:50putting yourself out there, raising your hand
- 5:52for the project, and just being comfortable with
- 5:56being uncomfortable. Action item for this week.
- 5:59Pick one opportunity you've been hesitating on
- 6:01and say yes. Speak up in a meeting, apply for
- 6:04the thing, volunteer for the project, raise your
- 6:08hand. And number three that Kim talked about
- 6:11is empathy for others. Every woman is carrying
- 6:14something you don't see. So assume positive intent.
- 6:18Offer grace before judgment. Look, we all have
- 6:20our stuff. Could be dealing with aging parents,
- 6:23kids, spouses, even a sick animal. We don't know
- 6:27what's going on with people, so sometimes just
- 6:29give them the benefit of the doubt. It's not
- 6:31always about you. If you're really struggling
- 6:34and you continue to struggle with the same person,
- 6:36then talk to them. See if they're OK. Maybe they
- 6:38just need someone to acknowledge the fact that
- 6:40they're struggling. You have to show up for others
- 6:42and you have to be supportive. I saw this great
- 6:45quote that I wanted to share. Kindness isn't
- 6:48just an action, it's a ripple effect. Every small
- 6:51act creates waves of positivity on ways you might
- 6:54never see. And that's so true. You know how we
- 6:57talk about like the random acts of kindness and
- 6:59doing the good deeds and, you know, buying somebody
- 7:01a coffee at Starbucks that's behind you. That's
- 7:04awesome. And we should continue those types of
- 7:06opportunities. But think about how you can do
- 7:08that in your day. It's very little things of
- 7:11just sometimes checking in with somebody or asking
- 7:13them how they are doing. You do see that they're
- 7:15struggling. And again, sometimes you have to
- 7:18just assume that people have positive intent.
- 7:20And if they don't, then have the conversation
- 7:22with them. So action item today, if you feel
- 7:25the urge to critique another woman, pause and
- 7:27find one thing to affirm instead. And if you
- 7:31know that you're dealing with somebody who is
- 7:32struggling, reach out. Just check in with them.
- 7:35See if they are OK. Just offer any support that
- 7:38you can. So we have our three action items. Number
- 7:40one, today, intentionally recommend or advocate
- 7:43for a woman when she's not in the room, whether
- 7:45it's a project, a panel, or promotion. Number
- 7:48two, get. outside of your comfort zone. Raise
- 7:52your hand, volunteer, sit at the table, talk
- 7:55to somebody new, network outside of your circle,
- 7:58but put yourself out there. And thirdly, if you're
- 8:01feeling the urge to critique another woman, pause
- 8:03and find one thing to affirm instead. And if
- 8:05you know she's struggling, check in with her
- 8:08and have an authentic conversation. Thanks for
- 8:10tuning in to this quick lift. If you haven't
- 8:12listened to Kim's episode, go check out episode
