- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Tom Moore, the general manager of the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Yukon Husky basketball program. It's a job that is really important.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I mean, we have looked around the country. Tom, We've
- 0:09Speaker 1: been to places where other schools I think of Villanova
- 0:13Speaker 1: and you know, the Michigan's of the world. How much
- 0:16Speaker 1: time and energy they put into this, because it's really
- 0:20Speaker 1: a way to attract players, isn't it. It's more than
- 0:24Speaker 1: just recruiting a player. You've got to offer something and
- 0:29Speaker 1: there is so much to that and that's really what
- 0:32Speaker 1: your gig is, isn't it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yes, I'm in the uh but it's a collaborative effort though,
- 0:39Speaker 2: between you know, our assistant coaches obviously Coach Hurley and
- 0:45Speaker 2: myself when it comes time to you know, figuring out
- 0:50Speaker 2: how much revenue share, you know, we could allocate to
- 0:54Speaker 2: a young man. It's a I'm blessed that I have
- 1:00Speaker 2: a head coach that I work for who's got a
- 1:03Speaker 2: great sense of the financial landscape and has is really
- 1:08Speaker 2: financially responsible, you know, on behalf of the athletic department
- 1:11Speaker 2: and on behalf of what we have to offer. And
- 1:14Speaker 2: the three assistant coaches obviously to have a great network
- 1:18Speaker 2: across the country and know a lot of people, so
- 1:20Speaker 2: we can sort of get to the bottom of what's
- 1:23Speaker 2: actual and what is fake when it comes to demands
- 1:26Speaker 2: or what the market is holding for certain for certain kids.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So we get together and we sort of discuss how
- 1:33Speaker 2: we think each one of these kids revenue sharing number
- 1:37Speaker 2: will impact the locker room, will impact the total salary
- 1:41Speaker 2: cap that we're allotted. There's a lot. It's just another
- 1:44Speaker 2: level of sophistication that goes into it. And I think
- 1:48Speaker 2: Coach Hurley's done an amazing job at sort of leading
- 1:52Speaker 2: us and making really outstanding financial decisions. You know, as
- 1:59Speaker 2: each financial decison is tied to a player, right like,
- 2:03Speaker 2: there are some guys that we felt have been, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: sort of undervalued, and and those are the guys that
- 2:09Speaker 2: interest us a great deal if if we love their talent.
- 2:12Speaker 2: But then there have been other guys, obviously more so
- 2:14Speaker 2: more than more so than than not, where they're very
- 2:17Speaker 2: good players, we're interested, but they're they're looking for way
- 2:21Speaker 2: too much money on the on the front end, and
- 2:24Speaker 2: it makes the job a little harder. You have to
- 2:27Speaker 2: be a little more diligent, you have to be a
- 2:30Speaker 2: little more patient, and but it's a it's a unique
- 2:34Speaker 2: it's a unique new aspect and it's one too, Mike,
- 2:37Speaker 2: that you can't just shy from and throw your hands
- 2:39Speaker 2: up and discussed and say I'm not going to deal
- 2:43Speaker 2: with this because you'll be at a competitive disadvantage if
- 2:46Speaker 2: you do.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, no question about it. And the whole world you're in
- 2:51Speaker 1: now it's about what players or agents are telling you
- 2:55Speaker 1: that their player is being offered by some other school.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I think that's probably the more difficult thing. You don't
- 3:01Speaker 1: know what the fact of the matter is, and that's
- 3:03Speaker 1: got to be really tough to deal with.
- 3:05Speaker 2: It really is. Yeah, it's it leads to a high
- 3:08Speaker 2: level of frustration, and we've we've heard horror stories firsthand
- 3:13Speaker 2: from other coaches and from families and about agents, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 2: basically over inflating what they're being told and because that's
- 3:23Speaker 2: where they make their money obviously, you know. So it
- 3:26Speaker 2: takes a lot of work, and we have some deep
- 3:28Speaker 2: seated relationships to which helps where we feel like we can.
- 3:32Speaker 2: There are people, enough people in this industry we feel
- 3:34Speaker 2: like we can trust to get accurate information and we
- 3:37Speaker 2: lean on them a lot during those times.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So do you feel like that when you are talking
- 3:43Speaker 1: to folks who will give you information about a player
- 3:46Speaker 1: and what the actual situation is with a player that
- 3:50Speaker 1: being from Yukon, you're going to get a little bit
- 3:52Speaker 1: more respect in a sense. People aren't going to try to,
- 3:55Speaker 1: you know, take advantage of you because you've done a
- 3:59Speaker 1: lot of great things at this university with winning championships
- 4:02Speaker 1: and all that. I mean, that's got to be a
- 4:04Speaker 1: motivation for players, is it not. It's not always about
- 4:07Speaker 1: the dollars.
- 4:08Speaker 2: No doubt, Yeah, no doubt, Mike. I mean, we're blessed
- 4:11Speaker 2: that we feel like we have the best head coach
- 4:15Speaker 2: in the country. And if you are a young man
- 4:18Speaker 2: that that is alert and aware and has their antenta up,
- 4:24Speaker 2: or you have a parent that is has a finger
- 4:28Speaker 2: on the pulse of that stuff, or an agency, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 2: we we we hear from a lot of the reputable
- 4:32Speaker 2: agencies that they feel very good about how a player
- 4:37Speaker 2: will be coached if he ends up deciding on coming here.
- 4:40Speaker 2: So I think we do get a little bit of
- 4:43Speaker 2: a financial break because there isn't allure to coming to
- 4:47Speaker 2: the University of Connecticut because of the past history, because
- 4:51Speaker 2: of the track record of coach Hurley, and and because
- 4:54Speaker 2: of his reputation, it's been it's been fascinating to watch.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I know when particular, you know, three young men in
- 5:03Speaker 2: particular stood out to me where they really came here
- 5:07Speaker 2: with a specific mindset in terms of what they were
- 5:11Speaker 2: looking for. And it was Steph Castle, Cam Spencer and
- 5:13Speaker 2: Liam McNeely. Just the whole vibe of them and their
- 5:16Speaker 2: families in the forty eight hours they spent with us,
- 5:20Speaker 2: is they were aware of how good coach Hurley was
- 5:23Speaker 2: and what he could do for them. They needed to
- 5:26Speaker 2: just sort of see it, and they left with an
- 5:29Speaker 2: understanding that like, yeah, this is the place I need
- 5:32Speaker 2: to be And and you know, money wasn't an issue.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The number one factor was going to be winning, development
- 5:38Speaker 2: and being coached by you know, the best coach in
- 5:41Speaker 2: the country.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Final question, Tom on this. You know we have heard
- 5:45Speaker 1: stories from the football world college football about guys making
- 5:50Speaker 1: agreements with universities and then bailing after a year and
- 5:55Speaker 1: going somewhere else for more money. Is this going to
- 5:58Speaker 1: be what we're looking at a few years from now,
- 6:00Speaker 1: where we do We're going to have some kind of
- 6:02Speaker 1: a way to kind of negotiate all this where guys
- 6:07Speaker 1: can't just jump from one place to another on an
- 6:09Speaker 1: annual basis.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Jeez, Mike, we all certainly hope, so you know, we
- 6:15Speaker 2: certainly hope. So it's for smarter people than I to
- 6:19Speaker 2: figure that piece of it out. But jeez, because right now,
- 6:23Speaker 2: it just doesn't feel like there are enough guardrails. And
- 6:27Speaker 2: I think how these first couple of cases are going
- 6:29Speaker 2: to be, like the quarterback from Washington, and how these
- 6:31Speaker 2: things are going to be handled, I think will be
- 6:33Speaker 2: a blueprint for hopefully that they'll be resolved in a
- 6:37Speaker 2: in a quick and fair way in the future for
- 6:41Speaker 2: everyone's sake, because it's you can't have like chaos and
- 6:44Speaker 2: anarchy when it comes to signed contracts.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So there is no contract if you can just walk
- 6:50Speaker 1: away exactly. I thought, all right, Tom, we appreciate it.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Thanks so much. I all, you're working hard at this
- 6:55Speaker 1: and it's a new deal and I know you will
- 6:57Speaker 1: handle it well. So thanks to Dan Hurley and Tom Moore.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yukon's Men's Basketball Coaches show wrapping up on Mike, Christina
- 7:05Speaker 1: will see a Saturday at People's Bank Arena, Villanova coming
- 7:10Speaker 1: in as the Huskies face the Wildcats. Thanks for joining
- 7:14Speaker 1: us
