- 0:05Speaker 1: Max took an early exit, Mark run away with it,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and a Monaco crowned a new megastar. Welcome to Shannon's
- 0:12Speaker 1: Round Up, your home for everything happening across the world
- 0:15Speaker 1: of motorsport. This episode of Pittook is brought to you
- 0:18Speaker 1: by Shannon's Insurance. I'm your host, Renita vmulan, and joining
- 0:21Speaker 1: me is our Formula one whisperer and part time interpreter
- 0:25Speaker 1: of whatever Ferrari is doing this week, Michael Lamonado. Michael,
- 0:30Speaker 1: welcome back. How are you feeling after the Monaco Grand Prix.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yes, well, another race Ferrari didn't win, so I'm feeling
- 0:37Speaker 2: very normal all things considered.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And of course, on the other side, the man you
- 0:43Speaker 1: just heard there, we have our Moto GP guru and
- 0:46Speaker 1: residence statman, Matt Clayton. Matt, double duties for you this week.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And have you caught up on some sleep?
- 0:53Speaker 3: No, but that's just you know, Mat, like a sleep updates.
- 0:56Speaker 3: So just chapter one of this podcast every single week.
- 0:58Speaker 3: But yeah, two very similar, tight, hard to pass racetracks
- 1:04Speaker 3: for Formula one and Moto GP. And that is where
- 1:06Speaker 3: the comparison's in between Monica and Balloton Park. I can
- 1:09Speaker 3: safely say that we will be back at Monico next year,
- 1:12Speaker 3: we will probably be back at Balloton Park never and
- 1:15Speaker 3: both of those outcomes are fine by me.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I love that. What a way to start this podcast.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I love the positivity. But let's go into it. The
- 1:23Speaker 1: positive outcome from Monaco. Kimmi Antonelli has really announced himself
- 1:29Speaker 1: as the new superstar in F one. You know, took
- 1:32Speaker 1: Paul converted into victory, five consecutive wins and just strengthening
- 1:37Speaker 1: his championship leads so far. Michael, honestly, is there anyone
- 1:42Speaker 1: on the grid right now who can stop Kimmy?
- 1:46Speaker 2: I mean, I still think the answer is Kimmy could
- 1:48Speaker 2: probably stop Kimmi. I'm waiting for the first incident, right like,
- 1:52Speaker 2: I feel like that's got to happen. But to be fair,
- 1:55Speaker 2: as each victory has come along, I feel less and
- 1:57Speaker 2: less secure. I really thought it was gonna happen, as
- 1:59Speaker 2: probably gon to be this weekend. I mean, the risk
- 2:01Speaker 2: required this track, the competitiveness that we expected at this
- 2:04Speaker 2: SEC and we've got a little bit of that in qualifying.
- 2:07Speaker 2: The risk level he was taking was pretty significant. I still,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know, you can watch a replay of the pole lap,
- 2:12Speaker 2: and I still, even knowing he made it, think that
- 2:14Speaker 2: he's going to crash at the Chicaine every time I
- 2:16Speaker 2: watch that replay, but he doesn't. It's the perfect amount
- 2:19Speaker 2: of risk in fact, so you've got to say, you know,
- 2:21Speaker 2: the more he does this, and we've been saying this
- 2:23Speaker 2: every week now, pretty much after his second or third win,
- 2:26Speaker 2: you feel more and more confident where he is. We'll
- 2:28Speaker 2: talk about George Russell in a moment, but he feels
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm decreasingly confident he's going to be able to stop him.
- 2:35Speaker 2: So really, at this point, the only one who can
- 2:36Speaker 2: stop him is himself and short of a miracle catch
- 2:40Speaker 2: up from another team that might slow Mercedes. It feels
- 2:44Speaker 2: silly to say it with sixteen rounds ago, but it
- 2:46Speaker 2: really feels like this is going in one direction.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It's going in one direction, and it's simultaneously very silly
- 2:51Speaker 3: because there are sixteen rounds to go, Mike all there,
- 2:53Speaker 3: I mean there could be eighteen. Like George Russell's the
- 2:56Speaker 3: only person at f on right now saying could we
- 2:57Speaker 3: please go to bar could we please.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Go to South?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Nobody else wants to. But the thing with Antonelli this
- 3:03Speaker 3: weekend is you know, you mentioned the five wins on
- 3:05Speaker 3: the bounce, and this was the one just because there's
- 3:08Speaker 3: so many tripwires and trap doors at Monaco that can
- 3:10Speaker 3: catch you out even if you're the fastest driver. We
- 3:12Speaker 3: see this as a story as old as time, and
- 3:15Speaker 3: not all wins are created equal, right, and each of
- 3:17Speaker 3: these because he's stacking them one after the other after
- 3:19Speaker 3: the other, this weekend was the best he's ever looked
- 3:22Speaker 3: as a Formula One driver. There were no caveats, there
- 3:24Speaker 3: were no asterisks. He just bossed the entire weekend, which
- 3:28Speaker 3: you think to yourself, well, you're in the best car
- 3:31Speaker 3: on the grid and you've got a championship leave, you
- 3:33Speaker 3: should be doing this. But we also have to say, well,
- 3:35Speaker 3: he's still a kid, and he's still the first time
- 3:37Speaker 3: he's ever been in the rarefied air of this sort
- 3:39Speaker 3: of positioning Formula One. So given the stakes of this weekend,
- 3:43Speaker 3: the eyeballs that are on it, and the pressure that
- 3:45Speaker 3: you are under to deliver and do what you've done elsewhere,
- 3:49Speaker 3: just the composure and the assuredness of what it is
- 3:51Speaker 3: that he's doing right now, to me is as valuable
- 3:54Speaker 3: as the twenty five points. And he just keeps racking
- 3:56Speaker 3: up week after week because Monaco is a weekend where
- 3:59Speaker 3: things go if they're going to go wrong, and they
- 4:01Speaker 3: went wrong for plenty of other people, but it never
- 4:04Speaker 3: really felt like it was going wrong for him, did it.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:06Speaker 2: There were two elements, wasn't it. There was the pole
- 4:08Speaker 2: shrewed out element. Had to beat Max Withstapphan, who was
- 4:11Speaker 2: somewhat unexpectedly competitive in qualifying. The fact he went out
- 4:14Speaker 2: got the lap done was a point to forty three
- 4:17Speaker 2: millise seconds, I think it was. Whatever it was, it
- 4:18Speaker 2: was a tiny margin. And then the race is one thing, right,
- 4:21Speaker 2: like we know that the race no overtaking through in
- 4:24Speaker 2: the leads, you're probably going to keep it. But had
- 4:26Speaker 2: to perfectly manage that start, something he hasn't been that
- 4:28Speaker 2: cut out over the course of the year. Yeah, and
- 4:30Speaker 2: then had to do it again after a safety car
- 4:33Speaker 2: restart as well. So two standing starts there was none
- 4:36Speaker 2: of them.
- 4:37Speaker 4: There was.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So there were many of those troop wise, as you said,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and he didn't even look like tripping over any of them.
- 4:41Speaker 2: He was the fastest driver on track comfortably. He was
- 4:43Speaker 2: setting fastest laps in every part of the Grand Prix.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It was just such a complete performance and another test.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You know, we think I think Miami previously maybe Miami
- 4:53Speaker 2: was still you know, different opinions on it his best
- 4:55Speaker 2: win because he had to absorb a lot of pressure
- 4:56Speaker 2: from Norris, had to be close enough strategically to take
- 4:59Speaker 2: the lead after had taken the lead. But the amount
- 5:02Speaker 2: of pressure in Monaco can't be underestimated. I'm sure there
- 5:05Speaker 2: will be you know, if he competes with the championship,
- 5:06Speaker 2: there'll be higher pressure races. But this is his was
- 5:09Speaker 2: his most under pressure victory, I think, and the fact
- 5:11Speaker 2: he came out of it with flying colors, I think
- 5:14Speaker 2: tells us a lot.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yep, Well, what about the other side of the garage,
- 5:18Speaker 1: because then you look at George Russell and just like
- 5:20Speaker 1: you said, a nightmare weekend failed to score for the
- 5:23Speaker 1: second weekend and a row had that five second pit
- 5:26Speaker 1: lane speeding penalty as well. Why is it going so
- 5:31Speaker 1: well for Kimmy and just going so wrong for George
- 5:35Speaker 1: at the moment?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Well, what's the my favorite word of the weekend was bamboozled?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Was George's wasn't He doesn't know why he's not fast
- 5:43Speaker 2: at the moment, And you know, you did get pol
- 5:45Speaker 2: in Canada, of course, but he said even he felt
- 5:47Speaker 2: like he fluked that result as well, because he wasn't
- 5:49Speaker 2: feeling comfortable in the car, wasn't feeling comfortable in Miami.
- 5:52Speaker 2: So he says it predates the upgrades as well as
- 5:54Speaker 2: not as if this car has suddenly been upgraded out
- 5:57Speaker 2: of the window in which he feels comfortable. It's actually
- 5:59Speaker 2: just this car in general, despite him having looked so
- 6:03Speaker 2: comfortable way back at the Australian Grand Prix a few
- 6:06Speaker 2: months ago. Now, so there's that element of it, and
- 6:09Speaker 2: then you know Matt. He also says he talks about
- 6:12Speaker 2: luck a lot, now, doesn't he All this bad luck
- 6:14Speaker 2: he's suffering, and he can count almost every Grand pretty
- 6:16Speaker 2: except Miami. I guess as being a function of bad
- 6:19Speaker 2: luck that he didn't score either more heavily or beat
- 6:22Speaker 2: his teammate certainly, an engine failure in the lead in Canada,
- 6:26Speaker 2: that's bad luck, even though he's been challenge very closely
- 6:28Speaker 2: by Antonelli, so he can't say it was a lost win.
- 6:30Speaker 4: There was bad luck there.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I mean this weekend, the pit lane speeding thing, a
- 6:34Speaker 2: lot of drivers got caught out the drive through penalties
- 6:37Speaker 2: already killed him, though he would have absorbed that five
- 6:39Speaker 2: second penalty before that red flag. Anyway, there's a little
- 6:43Speaker 2: bit of Obviously the team didn't fundamentally didn't serve the penalty,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and that's not on George, but he did enter pitt
- 6:49Speaker 2: Lane when there was some communication elements there, but when
- 6:52Speaker 2: the team wasn't expecting him. He still wasn't on the
- 6:55Speaker 2: pace this weekend. I mean, Lucky's playing a role, but
- 6:58Speaker 2: Lucky isn't the story, is it.
- 7:01Speaker 3: No, Sorry, I'm just adjusting by sky Sports black arm
- 7:03Speaker 3: band here as you speak. Yeah, look, Lucky is a
- 7:07Speaker 3: part of the pie. But you know, if you're going
- 7:09Speaker 3: to apportion blame for where he is right now, I
- 7:11Speaker 3: love a good game of blame pie. There is a
- 7:13Speaker 3: luck slice in the blame pie right now, but it's
- 7:15Speaker 3: only a smaller slice than perhaps we would think. And
- 7:18Speaker 3: you just said it there before. Fundamentally not on the pace,
- 7:20Speaker 3: and that is the key part of this. And you
- 7:22Speaker 3: go back to Canada. He was on the pace, but
- 7:24Speaker 3: he had his teammate all over him. And we've talked
- 7:27Speaker 3: before about momentum and narrative positive or negative, and they've
- 7:32Speaker 3: seen things that because everything in formula one can be
- 7:34Speaker 3: quantified by stats. Most of the time, no one expected
- 7:39Speaker 3: either Mercedes driver to be in the positions that they
- 7:41Speaker 3: are in currently in this World Championship at the beginning
- 7:43Speaker 3: of the year. I think that is a factor externally
- 7:46Speaker 3: but also internally within that team. Russell right now, it
- 7:50Speaker 3: feels this may be a bit harsh, but let's roll
- 7:52Speaker 3: with it anyway. It feels like a guy who's reaching
- 7:54Speaker 3: for something and reaching for something that perhaps isn't there
- 7:58Speaker 3: once quite clutching at straw. It's not quite as dire
- 8:01Speaker 3: as that. And yes, he has fundamentally been the second
- 8:04Speaker 3: best driver in Formula One this year, but I don't
- 8:06Speaker 3: think it's been particularly close. And when you have one
- 8:09Speaker 3: team that has such a massive advantage over all of
- 8:11Speaker 3: the others, as we've seen in previous first years of
- 8:14Speaker 3: rule regulations. If you think back to twenty fourteen, which
- 8:17Speaker 3: is the year that we keep referencing with Rosberg and
- 8:19Speaker 3: Hamilton because they were in a category of their own,
- 8:22Speaker 3: that season played out reasonably predictably. I suppose when you
- 8:25Speaker 3: had two drivers of their caliber in that dominant car
- 8:29Speaker 3: narrative and momentum, both within the team and externally, you
- 8:33Speaker 3: didn't expect this I didn't expect this, Kimie Antonelli didn't
- 8:36Speaker 3: expect this, and I think this is what is standing
- 8:39Speaker 3: out this year in that he is exceeding every benchmark
- 8:42Speaker 3: that we thought that he should be by June this
- 8:44Speaker 3: point of the year. Subsequently, George Russell's having a perfectly
- 8:47Speaker 3: good season, but because it's not to the expectations that
- 8:50Speaker 3: we had set for him at the beginning of it,
- 8:52Speaker 3: knowing that Mercedes were likely to have the best car,
- 8:55Speaker 3: there is a pressure and momentum element to this and
- 8:57Speaker 3: that pointscap. Now, yes, there's a million in a way
- 9:00Speaker 3: races to go, but it is not a small points
- 9:02Speaker 3: gap now because of these two non scores that Russell
- 9:04Speaker 3: has had, that's not going to be something that bodes well.
- 9:07Speaker 3: And yes, there's been some elements of bad luck, but
- 9:09Speaker 3: I think we probably need to put that into perspective
- 9:12Speaker 3: a little bit at this point.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Well, if you look at the championship and where Russell sits,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you know, sixty eight points down, does this mean that
- 9:23Speaker 1: his championship is almost over? If he's struggling this far
- 9:26Speaker 1: into the season now no points.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I mean, I'm almost in two vinds about this more
- 9:34Speaker 2: than because like we've already said sixteen rounds, that's too
- 9:37Speaker 2: many to say the championships decide it right, So much
- 9:40Speaker 2: can happen. I mean, even if we go back to
- 9:42Speaker 2: last year and everyone keeps talking about the past three example,
- 9:44Speaker 2: isn't it last year people were already penciling his name
- 9:47Speaker 2: in the championship column with nine rounds to go when
- 9:50Speaker 2: Norris had that engine fader in the margin, I think
- 9:52Speaker 2: it was thirty four points off.
- 9:53Speaker 3: The top of my head, thirty seven point yep.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And we should say at the exact same time for
- 9:57Speaker 2: Stephan was one hundred and four points down. And both
- 9:59Speaker 2: of those drivers finished ahead of Piastre by the end,
- 10:02Speaker 2: so that took only nine rounds to reverse that. And
- 10:04Speaker 2: that's a higher scoring rate the amount they finished ahead
- 10:06Speaker 2: of Piastre in total than Russell would require to beat Antonelli.
- 10:10Speaker 2: The reason why it's becoming more marginal for me is
- 10:13Speaker 2: that you have to Russell to get ahead. He has
- 10:15Speaker 2: to win the next ten Grand Prix in succession, which
- 10:18Speaker 2: is a lot that takes us away after the mid
- 10:21Speaker 2: season break, and that assumes that the Antonali we're seeing
- 10:24Speaker 2: at the moment is just going to finish second for
- 10:26Speaker 2: a lot. You know, on balance, based on what we've
- 10:29Speaker 2: seen between them, you'd say, well, you know, they might
- 10:31Speaker 2: be fifty to fifty to win every other race. By
- 10:35Speaker 2: the logic means if Russell and Antonelli trade wins, he
- 10:38Speaker 2: can't catch up. I think we're getting to that point
- 10:40Speaker 2: now where the streak Russell need to go on is
- 10:42Speaker 2: becoming so contrary to what we've learned about those two
- 10:45Speaker 2: drivers so far. It's getting harder to imagine. I don't
- 10:48Speaker 2: think it's over to go back to you. I can't
- 10:50Speaker 2: necessarily disagree with what matts it. It's way too early
- 10:52Speaker 2: to say it, but it is just becoming harder to
- 10:55Speaker 2: see the path, even while it remains mathematically possible to
- 10:59Speaker 2: see that part being followed well.
- 11:02Speaker 3: And the other factor, and you just mentioned it there,
- 11:04Speaker 3: is that last year we had multiple drivers and multiple
- 11:07Speaker 3: teams in the mix for race victories pretty regularly, whereas
- 11:10Speaker 3: this season we can assume, based on the evidence of
- 11:12Speaker 3: these first six Grand Prix that if Mercedes doesn't win,
- 11:15Speaker 3: then something's gone catastrophically wrong because there's no one really
- 11:18Speaker 3: on performance right now that can hold a glove to
- 11:20Speaker 3: them at most tracks, and so you're not going to
- 11:22Speaker 3: have these interlopes of red bulls and Ferraris and McClaren's
- 11:25Speaker 3: regularly getting in the mix for race wins if Mercedes
- 11:28Speaker 3: keeps doing what it's doing, so it does make it
- 11:30Speaker 3: harder because Antella can have a bit of a blar
- 11:33Speaker 3: race or a bit of a black couple of races,
- 11:35Speaker 3: quite frankly, and he could probably still finish on the podium,
- 11:37Speaker 3: all things being equal. So it's going to rely on
- 11:40Speaker 3: some misfortune or some unreliability to hack a large chunk
- 11:45Speaker 3: of that deficit of way in one go. In order
- 11:48Speaker 3: for and in order for Angenelogy, have this grip loosened
- 11:51Speaker 3: on his World championship because right now he has been
- 11:54Speaker 3: pretty much flawless. Is that going to happen for the
- 11:56Speaker 3: next sixteen rounds? No, but Russell's we've got a very
- 12:00Speaker 3: very big mountain to climb. And as you said, Bernera,
- 12:02Speaker 3: the fact that he's not even second in the World
- 12:04Speaker 3: Championship right now, it definitely took me so by surprise
- 12:06Speaker 3: when you looked at it and realized, oh yeah, these
- 12:08Speaker 3: two DNFs have really pushed him down the order where
- 12:12Speaker 3: he shouldn't be. And maybe SkySports can rip the black
- 12:14Speaker 3: armband off because they've got Lewis Hamilton's second in the
- 12:16Speaker 3: World Championship. So that's not all terrible, is it.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I'm glad you brought up Lewis because I wanted to
- 12:21Speaker 1: go from something dire straet so actually something that's quite positive.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And the fact that Hamilton and Ferrari were on the
- 12:27Speaker 1: podium here this weekend in Monaco. You know, I don't
- 12:31Speaker 1: think it was the weekend Ferrari were expecting and obviously
- 12:34Speaker 1: missing pole and getting nowherey of the victory. But what
- 12:38Speaker 1: has been your takeaway from this result for Ferrari this weekend, Matt.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I think they'll be disappointed that this shaped as being
- 12:46Speaker 3: the round where they could possibly unseat this Mercedes dominance.
- 12:49Speaker 3: It was the most likely round of the ones we've
- 12:51Speaker 3: had so far, So the fact that that didn't necessarily happen,
- 12:54Speaker 3: I don't think operationally they got it quite right over
- 12:57Speaker 3: the course of the weekend. I guess the feel good
- 12:59Speaker 3: story for them is that, you know, you look at
- 13:01Speaker 3: where Lewis Hamilton is now relative to last year. If
- 13:05Speaker 3: we'd had a continuation of twenty twenty five for him
- 13:07Speaker 3: in twenty twenty six, he may well this may well
- 13:09Speaker 3: have been his last season. He's last Monaco grond Prix.
- 13:12Speaker 3: This might have been it, and he seems quite rejuvenated. Yes,
- 13:16Speaker 3: there's second with an asterisk in the championship because George
- 13:18Speaker 3: Russell's had these two DNFs in a row. But he
- 13:21Speaker 3: looks like a reasonable facsimile of good Lewis Hamilton again,
- 13:24Speaker 3: which is not something that we said last year at all,
- 13:27Speaker 3: and I think Ferrari will be a little bit disappointed.
- 13:31Speaker 3: But in terms of where they sit relative to McLaren,
- 13:35Speaker 3: I think has been a greater underperformer. Over the course
- 13:38Speaker 3: of this season. It never really looked like they were
- 13:39Speaker 3: going to do anything other than maybe challenge for apodium
- 13:42Speaker 3: in Monaco. I guess the big unknown with the result
- 13:45Speaker 3: for Hamilton and therefore how the race would have played out,
- 13:47Speaker 3: was what happened to Maxvistappen off the start. The fact
- 13:50Speaker 3: that he didn't get off the start line. It was
- 13:52Speaker 3: an early retirement. We didn't really get to see if
- 13:54Speaker 3: that Red Bull progress was just Max doing amazing things
- 13:57Speaker 3: over one lap at a red Bull, which is very
- 13:59Speaker 3: well to do, or whether it was one of those
- 14:01Speaker 3: things that was going to play out over seventy eight laps.
- 14:03Speaker 3: We never got to see that story, unfortunately, but I
- 14:06Speaker 3: think mild disappointment from Ferrari. But if you're a Ferrari
- 14:10Speaker 3: investor in the Hamilton story or someone who follows Lewis Hamilton,
- 14:13Speaker 3: you will be pretty raped to see him second in
- 14:14Speaker 3: the World Championship.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Well, definitely. I think overall it's nice to see that
- 14:18Speaker 1: the championship's exciting and there's all these storylines coming out.
- 14:21Speaker 1: You know, for so long, it did feel like it
- 14:23Speaker 1: was constantly the same storylines as we quite often see
- 14:27Speaker 1: across all different sports. So I think it's cool that
- 14:29Speaker 1: we've got, you know, this young rookie, he's leading the
- 14:32Speaker 1: championship doing these really cool things. You have the other
- 14:34Speaker 1: side of the garage where we talked about George. There's
- 14:36Speaker 1: the struggle there Hamilton. The whole Ferrari move was a
- 14:40Speaker 1: big talking point in itself, and now it seems like
- 14:42Speaker 1: he's starting to come to grips with it. And then
- 14:45Speaker 1: you've got Max who's on the other side seems to
- 14:47Speaker 1: be struggling with Red Bull. It's all these things that
- 14:49Speaker 1: weren't on my bingo card. But it's exciting for the
- 14:52Speaker 1: sport and it's what the sport needs.
- 14:54Speaker 3: You know what I did like on the weekend, like
- 14:56Speaker 3: seeing that podium, with that podium with Anti Ellie Hamilton
- 15:01Speaker 3: and Hadja. The fact that the two guys either side
- 15:04Speaker 3: of Lewis don't even equal his entire age by themselves.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Those two are younger combined than Lewis is by himself.
- 15:09Speaker 3: As one of those amazing things. It's remarkable how long
- 15:13Speaker 3: Hamilton's been up the top in Formula one because he
- 15:16Speaker 3: was at the top from year one, day one pretty much.
- 15:18Speaker 3: But yeah, when you see Antonelli and Hajar and you're like, man,
- 15:21Speaker 3: how old would these two have been when Lewis racing
- 15:23Speaker 3: in his first Grand Prix in Australia in two thousand
- 15:25Speaker 3: and Seven's pretty remarkable.
- 15:28Speaker 2: The great statistic was you already said, the combined age?
- 15:32Speaker 2: And I think Lewis Hamilton has posted on his social
- 15:35Speaker 2: media photos of him as a Formula One driver with
- 15:38Speaker 2: them as fans as children age.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, just a little remarkable sort of piece of information.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I mean, how many boyfriends ago? Is that for? Kim
- 15:50Speaker 3: kardash You know, I guess it's the real start. Come on, Ronita,
- 15:55Speaker 3: what do you what do you got for? You must
- 15:56Speaker 3: have that stat head.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Right anyway, moving composure, composure, Look, I brought up Kim
- 16:05Speaker 1: Kay in the last one. I wasn't going to bring
- 16:07Speaker 1: her up again on my moments from this weekend better
- 16:11Speaker 1: than if you want to go there. Let's look to
- 16:13Speaker 1: this weekend though, Barcelona. I'm gonna call it my home
- 16:17Speaker 1: Grand Prix for Formula One this weekend. Michael, what's the
- 16:20Speaker 1: expectations here because, like Matt said earlier, very different track
- 16:24Speaker 1: coming from Monaco now to Barcelona.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yeah, well, for so long this has been the benchmark circuit,
- 16:30Speaker 2: isn't in terms of trying to assess where the cars
- 16:33Speaker 2: are in terms of their performance. So I'm expecting we'll
- 16:36Speaker 2: see a lot of what we Well, it's sort of interesting,
- 16:39Speaker 2: isn't it More what we'd come to expect before Monaco.
- 16:41Speaker 2: So Mercedes probably back near the front, and then maybe
- 16:43Speaker 2: some differences between those chasing them. But we haven't really
- 16:46Speaker 2: seen a normal track since the upgrades really arrived. We
- 16:48Speaker 2: had Miami it's a bit of an outLike and then
- 16:51Speaker 2: Canada and Montreal a huge outliers.
- 16:53Speaker 4: So perhaps a little.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Bit of maybe surprise is going to be too strong
- 16:56Speaker 2: of a word, but some form guide twists in this
- 16:59Speaker 2: because they have been a lot of upgrades since then.
- 17:01Speaker 2: But you'd be surprised not to see Mercedes up the front.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I'd be surprised as well not to see McLaren look
- 17:05Speaker 2: a lot better than they did in Monaco. Not that
- 17:08Speaker 2: that's too difficult, I suppose. I think the really big
- 17:11Speaker 2: question is Red Bull, right, because they have been so
- 17:14Speaker 2: difficult to gauge so far this year. Monaco was very good, yes,
- 17:17Speaker 2: a very particular circuit, but we've also seen better races
- 17:20Speaker 2: from them earlier this season. So has this been a
- 17:22Speaker 2: genuine step or was that just a bit of a
- 17:25Speaker 2: Monaco special? And actually they're still mind difficulty.
- 17:29Speaker 3: No, completely agree. I think the Redbell one's the one
- 17:31Speaker 3: to watch. I feel that I feel like I've got
- 17:34Speaker 3: a decent read on those other three teams in that
- 17:37Speaker 3: front quartet. The Red Bull one for me is still
- 17:38Speaker 3: the question mark, just from lack of evidence. That was
- 17:41Speaker 3: what was so frustrating about Monaco to a degree. And yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 3: pretty special track for a Stappen to make us all
- 17:47Speaker 3: feel old now ten years ago since that very first
- 17:49Speaker 3: win at this very racetrack too, which is kind of remarkable.
- 17:52Speaker 3: But yeah, that's the one I'm keen to see because
- 17:54Speaker 3: right now I think their grade is kind of inconclusive.
- 17:56Speaker 3: We just don't know.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Well before we preview Barcelona and we actually get on track, Michael,
- 18:03Speaker 1: you caught up with our Ossie hero in the Formula
- 18:07Speaker 1: one four wheeled space Jack Doing. So let's take a
- 18:10Speaker 1: listen to see what Jack has to say about his
- 18:14Speaker 1: new venture in Formula one.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Jack Doing, Welcome to pit talk.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Thank you very much. Great.
- 18:20Speaker 6: Great to be in chat with some familiar lingo I.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Can't chatted with.
- 18:26Speaker 6: I don't think I've chatted with many ossies so far
- 18:28Speaker 6: this year, so it's comfortable.
- 18:30Speaker 5: It's great to be back chatting.
- 18:32Speaker 2: It's only disappointing we all forgot our corek hats, which
- 18:35Speaker 2: is a pity.
- 18:36Speaker 4: We'll have to remember that for next time.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Check it.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Maybe yeah, yes, Before we look at the season that
- 18:44Speaker 2: you're up against this year and what you've been up
- 18:46Speaker 2: to recently, I want to do a really brief retrospective
- 18:48Speaker 2: to catch people up on your Formula one journey so far,
- 18:51Speaker 2: because you did it in some sense achieve your dream
- 18:53Speaker 2: of becoming a Formula one driver, and a couple of
- 18:55Speaker 2: years ago into many Grand Prix. Last year of course
- 18:58Speaker 2: it was taken away. You didn't hear too much from
- 19:01Speaker 2: you for a few months there, and then of course
- 19:03Speaker 2: you've joined the HASH team.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Is the reserve driver.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Can you tell us a little bit about how you
- 19:07Speaker 2: picked yourself up after that moment last year and did
- 19:11Speaker 2: you ever find yourself maybe not so much questioning yourself,
- 19:14Speaker 2: but the journey you'd been on to make it to
- 19:17Speaker 2: Formula one when for a moment it seemed like maybe
- 19:19Speaker 2: it was slipping away.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Yeah, it was obviously strange times, and especially that period
- 19:24Speaker 6: where there was you know, no comms and nowhere let's
- 19:30Speaker 6: say presence from my side, in the period from you know,
- 19:33Speaker 6: after Miami until really February this year where things were
- 19:37Speaker 6: very much on the on the quiet side. But it
- 19:41Speaker 6: was strange, sort of a weird let's say, twelve months
- 19:45Speaker 6: of you know, achieving that dream, having a three year contract, thinking,
- 19:48Speaker 6: you know, you're never secure secure, right, You're always you're
- 19:51Speaker 6: still an employee at the end of the day, even
- 19:53Speaker 6: as a race drive. You're still had a contract right
- 19:55Speaker 6: by someone obliging that. But I thought, you know, it
- 19:59Speaker 6: was in a strong position and so even with noise
- 20:01Speaker 6: that was going around and press, you know, I was
- 20:04Speaker 6: quite just like head down trying to do my job.
- 20:07Speaker 6: Although it does effect you know, you in some ways,
- 20:10Speaker 6: especially as it goes on. I was was quite content.
- 20:13Speaker 6: And then yeah, it was quite shock of the system,
- 20:15Speaker 6: as you said, and it was a little bit of
- 20:19Speaker 6: a difficult path, but there was in some ways, without
- 20:22Speaker 6: going in too deep into it, there was always a
- 20:25Speaker 6: bit of a rabbit like a carrot, I should say,
- 20:28Speaker 6: of this moment. So I was, you know, let's say,
- 20:31Speaker 6: presented with you know, opportunities of new possibilities, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 6: in increments. So it never felt like it was so
- 20:38Speaker 6: far away, at least that's how it was at the start.
- 20:41Speaker 5: And it was more around the zambrought time.
- 20:43Speaker 6: So I think we're getting into summer break August where
- 20:45Speaker 6: I realized I wasn't going to be hobbing back in
- 20:47Speaker 6: the car for for this current you know, current season,
- 20:51Speaker 6: and they really had to see where the next steps
- 20:53Speaker 6: are going to take me in then it was a
- 20:56Speaker 6: little bit of tough times certainly up towards February. Getting
- 21:00Speaker 6: obviously cleared from my previous contract allow me then to
- 21:03Speaker 6: explore new opportunities. And when you get let's say positioned
- 21:07Speaker 6: in that place in mid February. There is obviously many
- 21:11Speaker 6: things available to go and race as usually September the
- 21:15Speaker 6: year prior is late. You know, things kick off April
- 21:18Speaker 6: May and sort of your I would say, silly season,
- 21:21Speaker 6: but also for things for you know, the next season,
- 21:24Speaker 6: so to be in that season in February, it's a
- 21:28Speaker 6: little checking.
- 21:30Speaker 3: So you signed with Half as a reserve driver, Jack
- 21:32Speaker 3: and obviously the goal is still to rejoin the Formula
- 21:35Speaker 3: one Green. But how does the motivation change this time?
- 21:38Speaker 3: I mean, you've already ticked the box and made it
- 21:40Speaker 3: there once you've proved that you can do it. Does
- 21:42Speaker 3: it feel different this time to the first time.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's certainly a little bit different where.
- 21:53Speaker 5: It's hard hard to explain.
- 21:54Speaker 6: But I'm not let's say, trained to force and you think,
- 21:57Speaker 6: you know, I don't think there is.
- 22:00Speaker 5: There's so much let's.
- 22:02Speaker 6: Say, there's opportunities that will come in my control that
- 22:05Speaker 6: in order to be in my control, a little bit
- 22:06Speaker 6: outside my control, if that makes that makes sense, probably doesn't.
- 22:12Speaker 5: About it.
- 22:12Speaker 6: But I'm you know, let's say, just focusing exactly what's
- 22:16Speaker 6: in my control, which is, you know, don't my best
- 22:20Speaker 6: want to hear trackside opportunities inside the car when they
- 22:23Speaker 6: come and apart from that, not really over analyzing on
- 22:26Speaker 6: on the outside noise that covers so much of what
- 22:29Speaker 6: we do and also previously how I've been, So if
- 22:32Speaker 6: I managed to get back into a car, that would
- 22:35Speaker 6: be amazing.
- 22:35Speaker 5: But I know there's a lot, let's say, more things
- 22:38Speaker 5: than the normal that are that are playing in the factor.
- 22:40Speaker 6: So hence, you know, great opportunities and that I'm doing,
- 22:44Speaker 6: you know, also at sports cars and racing and Lamon
- 22:48Speaker 6: go on Saturday night, head to Lamon to do next weekend,
- 22:50Speaker 6: which wuld be you know, some good fun at a
- 22:52Speaker 6: cool experience. So yeah, not not locking too down. I
- 22:55Speaker 6: think there's a good opportunity, but I'm not let's say
- 23:01Speaker 6: so in the same in the same place where it's
- 23:05Speaker 6: the be all and end all, if that makes so.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Let's look at the here and now, and I do
- 23:10Speaker 2: want to get to your sports card journey a little
- 23:12Speaker 2: bit later on. But for those who have been following
- 23:14Speaker 2: you and now see you in this position with half
- 23:17Speaker 2: a brand new team for you, what does an average
- 23:19Speaker 2: race weekend look like for a reserve driver of your standard?
- 23:24Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a pretty pretty standard. Obviously, A different, slightly
- 23:28Speaker 6: different position than what I have been before, where it
- 23:31Speaker 6: was you know, pre obviously race experience, you're on that yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 6: let's say junior driver.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Category and you're you know, really.
- 23:39Speaker 6: Preaching and trying to get the opportunity, and now having
- 23:42Speaker 6: that experience, it's great to add a different sense of value.
- 23:47Speaker 6: So the weekend you know, is quite standardive you know,
- 23:50Speaker 6: obviously entertaining and doing.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Great commitments like we are doing now, or some more partner.
- 23:57Speaker 6: And and and partner and sponsor activities, you know, standard
- 24:03Speaker 6: packs of joining all meetings and sessions, but then also
- 24:07Speaker 6: throughout working with performance and strategy engineers, having understanding of
- 24:11Speaker 6: different lines, different things that people have been trying, screenshots
- 24:14Speaker 6: from on car pictures and also tie allocations people have
- 24:18Speaker 6: been using and how they've been behaving. So just more
- 24:21Speaker 6: of like a third party aspect is everyone has a
- 24:23Speaker 6: KPIs and hit right as your engineers or different retrospective
- 24:28Speaker 6: individual roles. So it's more just like a unified like
- 24:33Speaker 6: personal layer that I'm adding, you know, two small little
- 24:36Speaker 6: bits of increments that might be already known but makes
- 24:40Speaker 6: me feel a little bit more useful.
- 24:43Speaker 3: The other part to the job, I guess Jack is that,
- 24:45Speaker 3: you know, there's so little testing these days with F
- 24:48Speaker 3: one that you know, the whole reserve driver bit, there's
- 24:50Speaker 3: one of those two words. You don't get to do
- 24:52Speaker 3: heap of driving quite frankly, particularly of the current machinery.
- 24:55Speaker 3: And obviously this year's cast so different to what came
- 24:58Speaker 3: before it. We know all about that. How hard has
- 25:01Speaker 3: that been to make a contribution in that role that
- 25:04Speaker 3: you've got now, given that this year's cars are so
- 25:06Speaker 3: different and the chances to drive them are so limited.
- 25:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess it came from a lot of let's
- 25:12Speaker 6: say study and you know, prep on let's say the
- 25:17Speaker 6: operational side of understanding how these current cars are.
- 25:21Speaker 5: At the beginning of the year. You know, they were
- 25:22Speaker 5: fresh obviously for everyone.
- 25:23Speaker 6: I did a lot of SIM prep and development on
- 25:27Speaker 6: the twenty twenty six car at Alpine, so I had
- 25:30Speaker 6: an understanding. Obviously, things evolved and I wasn't involved in
- 25:33Speaker 6: that from June onwards. But my actually my first ever
- 25:36Speaker 6: simulard session with the Alpine team at the beginning of
- 25:38Speaker 6: twenty twenty two was on the twenty twenty sixth regulation,
- 25:42Speaker 6: the first SIM session that I was already Yeah, we
- 25:46Speaker 6: just started twenty twenty two REGs and I was already
- 25:47Speaker 6: working on twenty twenty six REGs, so I have an
- 25:50Speaker 6: understanding of it. But as you said, you know, even
- 25:53Speaker 6: testing that you know could happen this year is done
- 25:56Speaker 6: in the twenty five machinery, so completely different weapon in
- 26:00Speaker 6: itself to what we're dealing with now.
- 26:03Speaker 3: So you knew what we were going to be in
- 26:04Speaker 3: for in twenty twenty six. All the way back in
- 26:06Speaker 3: twenty twenty two. You could have warned everyone, Jacob to.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Keep it from us.
- 26:10Speaker 6: It was a lot worse then, so a lot so
- 26:16Speaker 6: you know, you know, you're hoping things get better and
- 26:18Speaker 6: better and better, and as they do, you know, they
- 26:21Speaker 6: evolve and evolve and shape into into the form.
- 26:24Speaker 5: They are now.
- 26:25Speaker 6: But yeah, I remember, Yeah, I was doing it on
- 26:29Speaker 6: very difficult It's like Manzo and as Abijan were very
- 26:33Speaker 6: long straights, and so yeah, cool to cool to cool
- 26:40Speaker 6: to see that and have that experience.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I want to look now at the team, of course,
- 26:46Speaker 2: or rather what you're doing alongside your.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Work with the team.
- 26:49Speaker 2: This weekend we alluded to the sports car racing program,
- 26:52Speaker 2: and that's a little bit different from the last couple
- 26:54Speaker 2: of years where you've done where you've the Formula one
- 26:56Speaker 2: driving itself or you've been a reserve driver without a
- 26:59Speaker 2: racing It might explanatory when you put in the sentence,
- 27:03Speaker 2: but what's the importance to a racing driver for having
- 27:06Speaker 2: an active racing program alongside this? Like what do you
- 27:10Speaker 2: and then how do they feed into one another?
- 27:11Speaker 6: As, Yeah, it's quite important in the job plat or
- 27:14Speaker 6: certainly you know, being a racing driver and then actually
- 27:19Speaker 6: racing it goes and otherwise you're just simply a reserved driver.
- 27:22Speaker 6: You can't classify yourself as a as a racing driver
- 27:25Speaker 6: if you're not racing technically. But it's it's been great. Obviously,
- 27:31Speaker 6: it was an awesome opportunity just to jump in a
- 27:32Speaker 6: car so late notice and last minute and yeah, completely
- 27:37Speaker 6: different style of racing and an environment as a whole,
- 27:41Speaker 6: and you know, super excited for them on an awesome
- 27:45Speaker 6: race and a lot of experience to come from that.
- 27:48Speaker 6: And it's just also good to have, you know, possibilities
- 27:52Speaker 6: going forward as you know, I think's ever given. Obviously
- 27:54Speaker 6: main goal is still to end up back here and
- 27:56Speaker 6: Formula one, you know, and and holding complete goal, but
- 28:01Speaker 6: it's great to have opportunities and a place to show
- 28:04Speaker 6: what I can do in a race car.
- 28:07Speaker 3: You mentioned Lamon before. It's one of those great times
- 28:09Speaker 3: of the motorsport year, isn't it. I mean, we're talking
- 28:11Speaker 3: to you from Monaco. It's Lamon the following weekend and
- 28:13Speaker 3: obviously you'll be in it on the grid. Have you
- 28:17Speaker 3: raced it Lamon before? Like, tell us a bit about
- 28:19Speaker 3: the preparations for that. And I guess the question that
- 28:21Speaker 3: all of Australia needs to know are you good at
- 28:23Speaker 3: falling asleep at random times in a twenty four hour period,
- 28:26Speaker 3: because we're about to find out, aren't we.
- 28:28Speaker 6: Well you'll find out very very quickly for sure. No,
- 28:32Speaker 6: I haven't done Lamon before, and I've been falling asleep
- 28:36Speaker 6: and waking up to inca on board footage.
- 28:39Speaker 5: There's a few.
- 28:40Speaker 6: There's like a I Date Genesis LMB two on board
- 28:44Speaker 6: that goes for eleven hours that I've been watching quite
- 28:47Speaker 6: a lot. It's the start of the DACE that you know,
- 28:50Speaker 6: one constant period on YouTube. And there's a few other
- 28:53Speaker 6: United on boards and things that really I just have
- 28:56Speaker 6: been mirroring understanding, especially you know now driving track coordination
- 29:01Speaker 6: or small things that really come up at different times.
- 29:04Speaker 6: And I think the biggest thing is even in Elms
- 29:07Speaker 6: when in L and B two you're the quickest car
- 29:09Speaker 6: on track, but now you have hypercars, so you're not
- 29:11Speaker 6: the fastest car on track, And not only you're navigating
- 29:13Speaker 6: through gts, but you're also having cars navigating through you,
- 29:16Speaker 6: which is a different perspective.
- 29:19Speaker 2: So just before we wrap this up as well, I
- 29:21Speaker 2: just want to touch on that element of how different
- 29:23Speaker 2: and how big the challenge of La Morne is this weekend.
- 29:26Speaker 2: As it is, you've touched on some of those differences there,
- 29:29Speaker 2: the night driving, the traffic being in different categories. Does
- 29:32Speaker 2: any one of them stand out so far in your
- 29:34Speaker 2: preparations for this weekend as being the biggest one coming
- 29:37Speaker 2: from a single seed of background.
- 29:39Speaker 4: As you are.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I think the biggest thing is you know, slow
- 29:43Speaker 6: zone coordination, fall course yellows. Obviously you then tie that
- 29:49Speaker 6: into the traffic because sometimes you know you'll see green
- 29:52Speaker 6: bollard the end of a slow zone, you other GT
- 29:54Speaker 6: in front of you, you both go green, and you
- 29:56Speaker 6: don't want to obviously do any overtaking before that line.
- 29:58Speaker 6: There's no very penalties, not only just drive through as
- 30:01Speaker 6: drive throughs plus thirty second holds, and it's more you know,
- 30:06Speaker 6: staying out of the obviously, staying out of the gravel,
- 30:08Speaker 6: you know, staying you know clean with no bodyworight damage
- 30:12Speaker 6: from any any contact of gts, no penalties and just
- 30:16Speaker 6: keeping it very in shape as I think that can
- 30:19Speaker 6: put us in a much better position for a shot
- 30:22Speaker 6: at doing a good result rather than outright performance. I
- 30:25Speaker 6: think a lot of things can go wrong over the
- 30:27Speaker 6: twenty four hours and you see a lot of the
- 30:30Speaker 6: top drivers you know, make very easy mistakes which you
- 30:35Speaker 6: know have penalties. Obviously more on the on the racing
- 30:37Speaker 6: you know, sports and direct the side, so really making
- 30:41Speaker 6: sure on par with.
- 30:42Speaker 5: With all of our points there before we go a green.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Jeez, you make it sound so simple this jump in
- 30:51Speaker 2: to think about Jack, I'm sure Australia which is you
- 30:54Speaker 2: all the best obviously with the big twenty four hour
- 30:56Speaker 2: race this weekend, but of course for the rest of
- 30:58Speaker 2: the season with pars and of course looking forward to
- 31:00Speaker 2: seeing you get another chance on them too. Thanks so
- 31:03Speaker 2: much for joining us on pittak Jeers.
- 31:05Speaker 5: No, thanks so much has been great. Good you guys soon.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Big thanks to Jack Dewan for joining me mat at
- 31:12Speaker 2: the Monaco Grand Prix. He's off now to lemon Or.
- 31:14Speaker 2: He's there at the moment in fact, and we wish
- 31:16Speaker 2: him good luck for that race and of course the
- 31:18Speaker 2: rest of the season trying to get back on the
- 31:19Speaker 2: Formula one grid, and I think hass is probably going
- 31:22Speaker 2: to be the right place to try and find an opening.
- 31:25Speaker 2: But from four wheels to two, now let's go to
- 31:26Speaker 2: Moto GP. And as of course Matt a little to
- 31:29Speaker 2: earlier on the Monoco of Mono GP, in one sense
- 31:33Speaker 2: or another was on the same weekend, I guess, so
- 31:35Speaker 2: that makes it work, don't worry. And of course it's
- 31:38Speaker 2: a milestone weekend with Mark Marquez reaching a remarkable one
- 31:41Speaker 2: hundred Grand Prix victory.
- 31:43Speaker 4: He's the only he's only the third writer.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Rather to have reached that milestone, behind Jack and Mai Gustinian.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Of course Valentino Rossi.
- 31:50Speaker 2: He's behind only Rossi for Premier class victories as well,
- 31:53Speaker 2: seventy four eighty nine. It's obviously that one of those
- 31:55Speaker 2: great achievements you seem in all sports, and this is
- 31:57Speaker 2: the one that kind of transcends the sport in some way.
- 32:00Speaker 2: It makes you realize that you are watching greatness, not
- 32:02Speaker 2: just another victory. But the significance of this victory, Matt
- 32:06Speaker 2: also has to be the fact he's only a month
- 32:08Speaker 2: off the operating table. I feel like we say that
- 32:11Speaker 2: all the time about Monor GP writers Mirk Mikez in particular,
- 32:14Speaker 2: But is.
- 32:14Speaker 4: This Does this mean more?
- 32:16Speaker 2: Does it means something different to what you might have
- 32:18Speaker 2: expected when we're all thinking about that one hundredth win
- 32:20Speaker 2: because of the additional struggles he's overcome this season.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you could, you could go back and
- 32:25Speaker 3: say two bouts off the operating table because he's ninety ninth.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Winn was at Massano last September, and that's you know,
- 32:31Speaker 3: I didn't think we'd be waiting nine months between Wednesday
- 32:34Speaker 3: and ninety nine and one hundred. He was winning a
- 32:35Speaker 3: race every seven days most of the time last year,
- 32:37Speaker 3: of course, so the fact that we had to wait
- 32:40Speaker 3: this long, but it was such a it was such
- 32:43Speaker 3: a classic sort of twenty twenty six spec Marquez weekend
- 32:47Speaker 3: in a lot of respects because the expectations are low,
- 32:50Speaker 3: because you know that he's compromised. He's absolutely the world
- 32:53Speaker 3: champion at talking down his own chances. As for a
- 32:56Speaker 3: guy who's not an underdog he's very good at paging
- 32:58Speaker 3: himself as one. And what was interesting in the fallout
- 33:02Speaker 3: after the race was that, you know, we know he
- 33:04Speaker 3: came back for Magello the previous weekend, where you know,
- 33:07Speaker 3: you couldn't find two circuits that are more different, Magello
- 33:09Speaker 3: and Baloton Park. But he admitted after the race that
- 33:12Speaker 3: he only came back from Magello so he'd be ready
- 33:14Speaker 3: for Baloton Park because Baaloton Park is a circuit of
- 33:17Speaker 3: predominantly left handers. We know that on anti clockwise tracks.
- 33:21Speaker 3: He is an absolute genius. He has been his entire career,
- 33:24Speaker 3: and this was a weekend he would have looked and said,
- 33:26Speaker 3: even being slightly compromised, I'm still probably going to be
- 33:30Speaker 3: better than everybody else here, and then you rely on
- 33:33Speaker 3: things like adrenaline and what have you getting you through
- 33:35Speaker 3: because he's clearly not right in terms of fitness and
- 33:37Speaker 3: what have you. But this was a weekend where he's thinking, well,
- 33:39Speaker 3: if I'm somewhere near my best, there's thirty seven points
- 33:42Speaker 3: from here this weekend, and this will help me my
- 33:44Speaker 3: World championship quest. I think the part of the equation
- 33:47Speaker 3: that he didn't perhaps take into consideration was the fact
- 33:50Speaker 3: that Marco Perzeki and Juge Martin would not score at
- 33:53Speaker 3: all in Sunday's Grand Prix. One of those things leads
- 33:56Speaker 3: to the other, and so the fact that Marquez got
- 33:58Speaker 3: twenty five three points on both of those two, He's
- 34:00Speaker 3: now seventy two points behind in the championship. And you
- 34:04Speaker 3: know we were talking about George Russell's deficit before to
- 34:06Speaker 3: Kimie Antonelli and is it possible and everything else. Seventy
- 34:09Speaker 3: two points against an Aprellier outfit that clearly has been
- 34:12Speaker 3: the standout bike and the standout team of this year
- 34:14Speaker 3: sounds like a tall order. But then tall orders don't
- 34:17Speaker 3: exist for someone as small as Mark Markets, right, he
- 34:19Speaker 3: just scales over these things and has done his entire career,
- 34:22Speaker 3: and so the very threat of him being much more
- 34:26Speaker 3: in the championship mix than he was before this weekend,
- 34:29Speaker 3: there's always time. And I think the thing for me,
- 34:32Speaker 3: and I don't know whether you think this too, Ernita,
- 34:34Speaker 3: is that now we've got these these three races now
- 34:36Speaker 3: before the break, right, and it's a month off effectively.
- 34:39Speaker 3: So we've got we've got Asen, We've got so Bruno first,
- 34:43Speaker 3: then Asen and then Saxon Ring now Saxon Ring. If
- 34:46Speaker 3: Mark Marcus is upright on a motorcycle, we know how
- 34:48Speaker 3: that ends because history has told us that. It's really
- 34:51Speaker 3: interesting now with Bruno and Asen, where is he going
- 34:54Speaker 3: to be at the mid season break? And then what
- 34:57Speaker 3: is that three to four weeks off the bike go
- 35:00Speaker 3: to do for his fitness. I don't know what the
- 35:02Speaker 3: magic number is. It would need to be less than
- 35:04Speaker 3: the seventy two points that he's behind now, but it
- 35:07Speaker 3: feels very real that he could be right back in
- 35:09Speaker 3: the championship mix by the mid season break. And then
- 35:13Speaker 3: with everything that's going to happen in Murdor GP for
- 35:15Speaker 3: the rest of this season, with all of these guys
- 35:17Speaker 3: changing manufacturers and teams, and we're going to have a
- 35:19Speaker 3: really weird second half of the season because three quarters
- 35:22Speaker 3: of the grid's going to be riding for someone else
- 35:24Speaker 3: next year. It feels like it's going on to me,
- 35:26Speaker 3: how do you see it? Am I going to early
- 35:28Speaker 3: here or do you think it's actually real?
- 35:30Speaker 6: No?
- 35:30Speaker 1: I think you're hitting the nail on the head there.
- 35:32Speaker 1: With that, I think there's two things we've learned about
- 35:35Speaker 1: Mark this weekend. We can't trust anything, he says, anymore.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Like Matt said, coming into this weekend, he's there going,
- 35:43Speaker 1: look if I'm if I'm even fighting for a podium position,
- 35:46Speaker 1: that means everybody else is just having a terrible weekend.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Blah blah blah. Straight out the bat off, he goes
- 35:52Speaker 1: fastest in the sessions, like it's such a mark thing
- 35:56Speaker 1: to do, and then in the press conference after the race,
- 35:59Speaker 1: everyone's asking the same thing as going, why are you
- 36:01Speaker 1: telling us this? And you go out and do that
- 36:04Speaker 1: and then everything opens up. But I think you hit
- 36:07Speaker 1: the nail on the head there. He even openly said,
- 36:09Speaker 1: He's like, look, Bruno and Asen, they're not going to
- 36:11Speaker 1: be my strong points. And I knew that. I wanted
- 36:14Speaker 1: to get Balloton Park out of the way. I wanted
- 36:16Speaker 1: to build that confidence up. Then they go to Saxon Ring.
- 36:20Speaker 1: He's called the King of the Ring for that reason. Right,
- 36:22Speaker 1: It's not often that he's not winning there, but even
- 36:26Speaker 1: him and his words were, I want to be back
- 36:29Speaker 1: to my new one hundred percent for what he is
- 36:32Speaker 1: in his fitness, the new one hundred for after the
- 36:35Speaker 1: summer break, because then we start to go into those
- 36:38Speaker 1: tracks where he's really strong. We go to the flyaways
- 36:40Speaker 1: Philip Island, for example, somewhere where he's incredible at. He
- 36:44Speaker 1: wants to take this tail end of the season and
- 36:46Speaker 1: then really try and push for that championship fight, even
- 36:49Speaker 1: though he's going to deny it. He's going to say
- 36:51Speaker 1: he's not thinking about the championship. He's Mark Marquez, of
- 36:54Speaker 1: course he is. This is where I start to think
- 36:56Speaker 1: that pressure is going to start to trickle though into Prillier,
- 37:00Speaker 1: because I think they had the first other season comfortably
- 37:03Speaker 1: and they're like, Mark's not there. Look at where we
- 37:05Speaker 1: are now. The cracks are starting to form well.
- 37:08Speaker 3: And the other factor in all of this is as well,
- 37:10Speaker 3: is that there's this theory that Bozeki can do it,
- 37:13Speaker 3: that a Prillier can do it, but they haven't done
- 37:15Speaker 3: it before, and so it's only a theory. The pace
- 37:18Speaker 3: and the statistics suggests that they should be able to
- 37:21Speaker 3: do it, but until you've actually done it, and when
- 37:23Speaker 3: the person that's in pursuit of what you're trying to
- 37:25Speaker 3: get to is a person who has done it, has
- 37:28Speaker 3: one hundred races across all three championship classes, there are
- 37:31Speaker 3: no doubts as to whether Mark Marqus is capable of
- 37:34Speaker 3: winning a world championship. There has to be doubts with
- 37:37Speaker 3: the other side of that equation because they haven't done
- 37:39Speaker 3: it yet, So those footsteps will get super super loud.
- 37:42Speaker 3: If he's within fifty five sixty points at the mid
- 37:45Speaker 3: season break, I worked it out on the weekend, he'd
- 37:47Speaker 3: need to outscore Bozeki by it's about five and a
- 37:49Speaker 3: half points around for the rest of the season, which
- 37:52Speaker 3: doesn't sound like much, does it. When you've got thirty
- 37:53Speaker 3: seven points on offer at every single Grand Prix, you
- 37:56Speaker 3: know you're not going to make up huge chunks in
- 37:58Speaker 3: one weekend like you did in Hungary every weekend, but
- 38:00Speaker 3: you also don't have to because there's so much longer
- 38:02Speaker 3: to go in this season. So yeah, those footsteps will
- 38:04Speaker 3: start getting pretty loud if we have another one or
- 38:06Speaker 3: two races before the break that swing heavily in his favor.
- 38:09Speaker 2: I think not to make another four wheel comparison, but
- 38:13Speaker 2: it feels a lot like us Stapen versus McLaren, doesn't
- 38:15Speaker 2: it right? Yeah, putting the fear of defeat into a
- 38:19Speaker 2: team that hasn't been there before and almost getting it done.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Let's move on to how we won that one hundredth
- 38:25Speaker 2: Grand pre victory. Though the showdown with Pedro Acosta very
- 38:28Speaker 2: exciting to watch. I think Lewis Sudderby, the commentator, might
- 38:31Speaker 2: have described it as a mighty fighty at one point,
- 38:33Speaker 2: possibly by accident, but I enjoyed that when watching the coverage.
- 38:37Speaker 2: The more significant part of this. Okay, there is the
- 38:39Speaker 2: Pedro Costa looking for that first crown pre victory. There's
- 38:41Speaker 2: one hundredth grand pre victory. But of course we all
- 38:43Speaker 2: expect that these two writers are going to be teammates
- 38:46Speaker 2: next season, and this was a little bit of a
- 38:47Speaker 2: preview or a little bit of a laying down of
- 38:50Speaker 2: a mark or a marking of the territory, how we
- 38:52Speaker 2: want to call it, this first big show down here,
- 38:55Speaker 2: Let's stick with the cost Now, though we've talked a
- 38:56Speaker 2: bit about Marcz what's he missing to get that last victory?
- 39:00Speaker 2: Is it just the move to Zacati? Does you have
- 39:02Speaker 2: to wait that long? Or what's it going to take
- 39:04Speaker 2: to get it done this season? I think he does
- 39:06Speaker 2: get it done this season. I cannot imagine that he
- 39:08Speaker 2: would go three Motor GP seasons without a race victory.
- 39:11Speaker 2: I mean the fact that he's now set the unwanted
- 39:13Speaker 2: record of most podiums without a Grand Prix win. He's
- 39:16Speaker 2: up to thirteen now. He overtook Colin Edwards on the
- 39:19Speaker 2: list you don't want to be on in Motor GP.
- 39:21Speaker 2: But he couldn't have done much more. And I think
- 39:25Speaker 2: the thing for me and Rennette you will probably agree
- 39:27Speaker 2: with this is how good a Costa is to me
- 39:30Speaker 2: is have a look what the other guys on the
- 39:31Speaker 2: KTM are doing, none of whom are bad riders.
- 39:34Speaker 3: You know, Brad Binner has won Grand Prix and Aabastian
- 39:36Speaker 3: and he's one Grand Prix. Maverick Vinalez when he has
- 39:38Speaker 3: two working shoulders has managed to win Grand Prix. You're
- 39:41Speaker 3: not dealing with guys who are mugs. Are also rans
- 39:44Speaker 3: on the same equipment, and they are. I mean, you
- 39:46Speaker 3: just don't see them on the TV coverage unless they're
- 39:48Speaker 3: crashing at the moment or cruising around in Q one
- 39:50Speaker 3: coming last. Because a Costa is doing absolutely miracle things
- 39:54Speaker 3: with that bike right now. It's the only time you
- 39:57Speaker 3: ever see a non Ducati. You're a brilliant the front
- 39:59Speaker 3: quite frankly, is when he's in the mix, so he's
- 40:02Speaker 3: completely out performing the bike at the moment. It does
- 40:04Speaker 3: feel like there's going to be a weekend this year
- 40:06Speaker 3: where he does win one, and of all of the
- 40:08Speaker 3: riders who've had their reputations in hearts over this season, Yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 3: I know, it's what forty nine gral prestarts now and
- 40:14Speaker 3: he hasn't won one. But I don't think anyone thinks
- 40:16Speaker 3: any less of him for not winning one. He's the
- 40:18Speaker 3: only guy on the weekend that could lay a glove
- 40:20Speaker 3: on Markers, and that in itself tells you all you
- 40:22Speaker 3: need to know.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Well, I mean, there was points where it almost he
- 40:26Speaker 1: didn't almost lay his glove on Markers. They were fighting
- 40:29Speaker 1: so hard and like they were talking about it afterwards,
- 40:31Speaker 1: and it was so cool. In the broadcasters set, we
- 40:34Speaker 1: saw Matt Burt talking to Mark and he's like, do
- 40:39Speaker 1: you like this type of racing? And Mark's like, I
- 40:41Speaker 1: love it. Did you see the moves? And he's like,
- 40:43Speaker 1: we're not doing anything dangerous? Like I would pass him
- 40:47Speaker 1: where I knew he was weak. He would then study
- 40:49Speaker 1: me and pass me where he knew I was weak.
- 40:51Speaker 1: But then we were just going for it. In the
- 40:53Speaker 1: Mark jokingly said, Kay, it was two solid laps of
- 40:56Speaker 1: us going for it. If it was three, we both
- 40:58Speaker 1: would have ended up in the graph. He's having so
- 41:01Speaker 1: much fun. But I think with Acossa, is he we
- 41:06Speaker 1: know the talent, Like he's had that pressure since he's
- 41:08Speaker 1: come into Moto GP of he's a new Mark Marquez.
- 41:11Speaker 1: He's had all this expectation set on his shoulders, but
- 41:14Speaker 1: he's really done it in his own way, and I think, Okay,
- 41:17Speaker 1: it's not where he wants to be. And you can
- 41:19Speaker 1: just see every time someone asks him is that podium coming,
- 41:22Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, it's gonna happen, but he believes it.
- 41:25Speaker 1: And we know he's working so well with his crew
- 41:27Speaker 1: chief Poultry Adam. You can see overall he's ringing the
- 41:31Speaker 1: neck out of that KTM, just like Fabria is trying
- 41:35Speaker 1: to on the Yamaha, just like everybody else is trying
- 41:37Speaker 1: to on all of the manufacturers. Whatever Pedro is doing
- 41:40Speaker 1: at the moment just seems to be working. But I
- 41:43Speaker 1: did think his tire choice was quite interesting, obviously, going
- 41:46Speaker 1: with the softs in the end where everybody else went
- 41:49Speaker 1: with the mediums, and you could just see. But he
- 41:51Speaker 1: even said at the end that wasn't why he dropped back.
- 41:54Speaker 1: He just didn't have any more to give. I mean
- 41:57Speaker 1: in the last laps. He said, there was like a
- 41:58Speaker 1: little bit of chatter, a little bit bouncing with the
- 42:00Speaker 1: soft tire as you would expect. But Pedro, when he
- 42:05Speaker 1: does get that Maide in Moto GP victory, it is
- 42:07Speaker 1: gonna be like, take your hat off, round of applause,
- 42:11Speaker 1: the shark is here. I'll just here.
- 42:15Speaker 3: My other favorite Acosta thing at the moment. I don't
- 42:17Speaker 3: know whether any else is picked up on this whenever
- 42:19Speaker 3: he signs off on an interview, because the English is
- 42:22Speaker 3: getting better, but it's still a little bit of an adventure.
- 42:24Speaker 3: It's something along the lines of thanks mate, thanks dude.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Dude came out on the weekend and he'll sign off
- 42:32Speaker 3: and he'll say thank you boys, just to know where
- 42:35Speaker 3: in particular, and he's off, thanks boys. I'm not sure
- 42:37Speaker 3: who he's talking to, but he dropped the dude on
- 42:39Speaker 3: the weekend, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
- 42:41Speaker 1: It's quite funny because Joel Kelso does it when he's
- 42:43Speaker 1: talking to Jack Appleyard or whatever on the broadcast. He'll
- 42:46Speaker 1: be like, cheers mate, like he'll say something like that
- 42:49Speaker 1: as well, and you never hear any of the other
- 42:51Speaker 1: writers do it. But yeah, I've noticed Pedro doing the
- 42:53Speaker 1: same thing too, So he's got this swagger about him
- 42:56Speaker 1: at the moment, especially the shirts that he's wearing on
- 42:58Speaker 1: Thursday when he rocks up it.
- 43:00Speaker 3: To the pain. Yeah, we need an a cost of
- 43:02Speaker 3: bingo Carter just want to see if you know, thanks boss,
- 43:04Speaker 3: if that comes out at some point. We've got to
- 43:06Speaker 3: get through all of the salutations. By the end of
- 43:09Speaker 3: the season, We'll starting a cost of Bingo card. We'll
- 43:10Speaker 3: stick it on Fox Sports.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Well, add it to the take a drink every time
- 43:13Speaker 1: we say prahmaha, take a drink every time Pedro ends
- 43:17Speaker 1: an interview with the funniest.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I think you win when he when he drops a chief,
- 43:22Speaker 2: I think, thank you. Yeah, great, someone get that in
- 43:27Speaker 2: his ear. Well, we can't wrap up this race without
- 43:30Speaker 2: talking about, of course, what happened to Turn one. Feels
- 43:33Speaker 2: like it A GP really has quite a run going
- 43:35Speaker 2: of these big significant accidents, a massive pile up or
- 43:38Speaker 2: hey Martin instigated it, losing control on the breaks into
- 43:41Speaker 2: that first turn. Luckily no riders seriously injured. Two part
- 43:46Speaker 2: question to sort of wrap this one up. First of all,
- 43:48Speaker 2: there's the prillier and dynamic element of this. I thought
- 43:51Speaker 2: it was actually really interesting hearing Massama Rivula afterwards that
- 43:54Speaker 2: the pretty boss saying that he sort of thought his
- 43:56Speaker 2: rider should have a harsher penalty and what he got.
- 44:00Speaker 2: And I wonder how that plays into the dynamic with
- 44:02Speaker 2: the fact that what we all expect fo Hey, Martin
- 44:04Speaker 2: won't be there next season, but Marchevitzeki will be. What
- 44:07Speaker 2: does that do in the second half of the year.
- 44:09Speaker 2: And then, of course the bigger safety question is will
- 44:11Speaker 2: I feel like we've been talking about ride height devices
- 44:13Speaker 2: for years, we know they're leaving being taken off next year.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Is it just time that they take them off?
- 44:19Speaker 4: Now? How many more instints are going to need?
- 44:21Speaker 3: Let me give you the short answer to the second question. First,
- 44:25Speaker 3: take them off now literally today as I speak. We
- 44:28Speaker 3: don't need them. They're going at the end of the
- 44:30Speaker 3: year anyway, everyone's got them. No one's gaining a great
- 44:33Speaker 3: performance advantage. Everyone's in the same boat. If they're posing
- 44:36Speaker 3: a safety hazard, can we just get rid of them now? Please?
- 44:38Speaker 3: Like you're never going to eliminate first corner accidents in
- 44:40Speaker 3: motor GP, it happens if we can take something away
- 44:43Speaker 3: from the bikes that will reduce the percentage chances of
- 44:46Speaker 3: these things happening, Let's just get rid of them now.
- 44:48Speaker 3: There's no benefit quite frankly, to them, to them being
- 44:51Speaker 3: on the bikes to the rest of the year, given
- 44:52Speaker 3: that we still have what fourteen rounds to go, Let's
- 44:54Speaker 3: just get rid of them. But the a Prilier question
- 44:57Speaker 3: that you pose there, and the key part of that
- 45:00Speaker 3: is the fact that one of those riders is leaving
- 45:02Speaker 3: and one of them is not. And you know, if
- 45:04Speaker 3: it comes down to it, a Prillier rider winning the
- 45:06Speaker 3: World championship this year. Of course, at Prillier would be
- 45:08Speaker 3: happy for any rider to win the World Championship, but
- 45:10Speaker 3: they will be happier if that rider is Marco Bozekia,
- 45:13Speaker 3: not whole Hamd Martine, because we've seen this before. Joorge
- 45:15Speaker 3: Martinez won a championship for one manufacturer and then left
- 45:18Speaker 3: for another one, and I don't really think we need
- 45:20Speaker 3: to see that happen again. And what will be really interesting,
- 45:22Speaker 3: going back five minutes to talking about Mark Marquerrez, if
- 45:25Speaker 3: they're in a situation where they have to prioritize one
- 45:28Speaker 3: of their riders very sort of Formula One style team orders.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Did I say papaya rules in my Orange jumper. No,
- 45:32Speaker 3: I don't want to do that. No, no, let's not
- 45:35Speaker 3: do that. But you have to think if Prillier, if
- 45:37Speaker 3: it comes down to, you know, we really have to
- 45:39Speaker 3: put all our eggs in one rider's basket here. Surely
- 45:41Speaker 3: you do it with the right of the stay, don't you.
- 45:43Speaker 3: So that's another dynamic to end to enter into the
- 45:46Speaker 3: back end of this season. But the rival of comments
- 45:49Speaker 3: were interesting. Michael's I don't know if you realized. So
- 45:51Speaker 3: neither Bozeki nor Martine actually spoke to the media after
- 45:54Speaker 3: the incident. Martine apparently was very Contrite went round to
- 45:58Speaker 3: the team, apologized to everyone, did all the right things,
- 46:01Speaker 3: but Rivlla actually saying, look, if they decided to give
- 46:04Speaker 3: him a harsher penalty than a double long lap for
- 46:06Speaker 3: the next race at Bruno, we'd have been fired with that.
- 46:09Speaker 3: And so yeah, that was very very interesting. It made
- 46:12Speaker 3: me wonder what he would have said if it was
- 46:13Speaker 3: Berzeki that took out Martin, But that's another story.
- 46:17Speaker 1: I think what we know about rivlo Is and you
- 46:20Speaker 1: know in well Matt from the f one days, is
- 46:23Speaker 1: he knows how to use his words. So if you
- 46:27Speaker 1: read into those words and what you've taught me about
- 46:30Speaker 1: reading body language. There you could clearly pick up a
- 46:34Speaker 1: thousand more words than what he was actually saying in
- 46:36Speaker 1: that interview. So I think tensions are going to be
- 46:39Speaker 1: a little bit tight at a Prillia after that situation.
- 46:44Speaker 1: I mean it was three out of the four Prilliers
- 46:46Speaker 1: were knocked out, which I thought it was quite funny.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Then only a few weeks ago, it was when Raoul
- 46:51Speaker 1: took out Martin and you know, he walked past Massimo Rivler,
- 46:57Speaker 1: walked past abade Brivio and was like is going on,
- 47:00Speaker 1: you know, controlling riders. Then everyone at a Prilier how
- 47:04Speaker 1: is it talking to and is like, we're all in
- 47:05Speaker 1: this together. Come on, guys, work as a team. Then
- 47:09Speaker 1: something like that happens. So I think there's definitely stuff
- 47:12Speaker 1: happening behind the scenes there. Like I said earlier, I
- 47:14Speaker 1: think the cracks are starting to form at a Priliad.
- 47:16Speaker 1: It's not the golden team we thought it was at
- 47:18Speaker 1: the beginning of the season.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Yeah, And just to put a bow on this because
- 47:21Speaker 3: I know we're sort of up against the time wise
- 47:23Speaker 3: here the curious there's kind of two elements here for
- 47:25Speaker 3: the rest of the season. Once we get this agreement
- 47:28Speaker 3: between the manufacturers and the promoters of the sport to
- 47:31Speaker 3: go ahead with the contract for the next five years,
- 47:33Speaker 3: which I'm hearing could be as soon as the next
- 47:35Speaker 3: round at Bruno. So that's very much I've watched this space.
- 47:38Speaker 3: We're going to get this huge flutter of rider announcements
- 47:40Speaker 3: for all these guys going to various teams that we've
- 47:42Speaker 3: known about now for the past five months, but they're
- 47:44Speaker 3: actually going to become public. And then what happens when
- 47:47Speaker 3: we know, I mean just within a prillia. We know
- 47:50Speaker 3: that Ayagura is not going to be there next year,
- 47:52Speaker 3: we know the Juge Martin's not going to be there
- 47:55Speaker 3: next year, and there's all of these moving pieces of
- 47:57Speaker 3: the rider market puzzle that will actually be public theoretical.
- 48:01Speaker 3: How does that shape for the championship picture, because you
- 48:04Speaker 3: could have half the guys in the mix of the
- 48:05Speaker 3: championship who are not going to be at those manufacturers
- 48:07Speaker 3: for next year, and that's an unprecedented situation. I can't
- 48:10Speaker 3: think of another sport that's going to go through as
- 48:12Speaker 3: much of a weird second half of the season like this.
- 48:15Speaker 3: There's been no f one season that I can think
- 48:16Speaker 3: of that's like it how that plays into the championship
- 48:19Speaker 3: dynamic and the fact that one of those front runners
- 48:21Speaker 3: who's staying with his manufacturer is a certain one hundred
- 48:24Speaker 3: win Mark Marquez. Yeah, back into this championship could be
- 48:27Speaker 3: pretty interesting for reasons that we haven't even thought about yet.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Before we wrap up Moto GP, though, I just thought
- 48:34Speaker 1: I would touch I don't know, we don't normally do
- 48:37Speaker 1: this on this pod, but can we just talk about
- 48:38Speaker 1: Santa's podium, like, yes, yes, what he's doing so good?
- 48:43Speaker 1: I think you know he didn't race here at this
- 48:46Speaker 1: track last year because it was one of the rounds
- 48:48Speaker 1: he missed after he got knocked out in Austria. So
- 48:51Speaker 1: he even came into this weekend being like, I don't
- 48:53Speaker 1: have high expectations. Actually, you don't want to thinking about
- 48:55Speaker 1: it out loud. He did a Mark Marquez. He came
- 48:57Speaker 1: into this weekend saying, I don't have the expectation. I
- 49:00Speaker 1: don't know how I'm going to go here. He said
- 49:02Speaker 1: he was super nervous going into qualifying because he knew
- 49:05Speaker 1: how important that was. Managed to get a decent qualifying
- 49:08Speaker 1: on the front row and then put it on the
- 49:11Speaker 1: box at the end of the weekend, I think with
- 49:13Speaker 1: all these rumors about Senna went talking about writers changing,
- 49:16Speaker 1: all these rumors about Senna possibly moving up to Moto GP,
- 49:20Speaker 1: this is what he needs to be doing. You heard
- 49:23Speaker 1: on the broadcast, everyone's like Manu, Manu, Manu going to
- 49:26Speaker 1: Moto GP. Well, Sen, if you're going to go to MotoGP,
- 49:29Speaker 1: keep up this consistency.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Yeah, he's doing exactly what he needs to do. He's
- 49:33Speaker 3: impressing the right people in the right places. And yeah,
- 49:36Speaker 3: speaking of watch this space, I do fear that. I
- 49:39Speaker 3: do feel there's going to be some good news on
- 49:40Speaker 3: that front. I can't tell you when, but I think
- 49:42Speaker 3: there will be at that point.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Certainly there will be some good news from the Senate
- 49:47Speaker 2: AGEUS front. Let's move on now, though, to move of
- 49:50Speaker 2: the week, brought to you by Shannon's plenty of motorsport.
- 49:54Speaker 4: Action over the course of the weekend to pick from.
- 49:57Speaker 4: Let's start for Anita, would you like to kick us off?
- 49:59Speaker 4: Since you were so it was a real prognostication last week.
- 50:01Speaker 2: You brought up Kim Kardashian a couple of weeks ago.
- 50:05Speaker 4: That's all anyone wanted to talk about. Do you have
- 50:06Speaker 4: won't make another. Maybe we should just go straight to predictions.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Do you know what, I'm just bringing the vibes with
- 50:12Speaker 1: my moves of the week. I'm not even going on track.
- 50:14Speaker 1: I'm going off track. And for me it was Max
- 50:17Speaker 1: Verstappan getting on the boat to travel five hundred meters
- 50:20Speaker 1: back to his apartment. That was my move of the week.
- 50:24Speaker 2: I'd love that Monaco. I mean, Monico is famous because
- 50:27Speaker 2: all the drivers live there, but you know that's in
- 50:29Speaker 2: the realms of Kimmy Reichen and going to have a
- 50:31Speaker 2: drink after his's McLaren expired and it was always becar.
- 50:35Speaker 6: You know.
- 50:36Speaker 2: I like the idea that drivers at the end of
- 50:38Speaker 2: the day are well, I'm not needed here anymore.
- 50:40Speaker 5: And just go on.
- 50:43Speaker 3: In center going back to his apartment after he crashed
- 50:45Speaker 3: his Clara and leading the race, just went back in
- 50:47Speaker 3: all of his gear and just sat there in the dark,
- 50:49Speaker 3: feeling bad about himself. But yeah, I did enjoy that.
- 50:53Speaker 3: While I'm I'm speaking movie of the week, I mean
- 50:56Speaker 3: moves of the week plural, I think you would have
- 50:58Speaker 3: to say the two lap Marque a cost of battle
- 51:00Speaker 3: for anyone that saw that race at Balloton Park. I
- 51:04Speaker 3: love the fact that those two can race one another
- 51:06Speaker 3: as hard as they can, and they can only do
- 51:09Speaker 3: that because there is a respect and an admiration factor
- 51:12Speaker 3: off both sides of that relationship that they know that
- 51:14Speaker 3: neither of them is going across the line of acceptable behavior.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Now that's not to say they won't crash at an
- 51:18Speaker 3: incident in the future, because it's bodogp and these things happened,
- 51:21Speaker 3: But the subtext of what was going on in that fight,
- 51:24Speaker 3: knowing that they're going to be teammates next year, but
- 51:26Speaker 3: knowing they can race each other as hard as that
- 51:29Speaker 3: and for it to be relatively clean to do the
- 51:31Speaker 3: four wheel analogy. Michael Engill appreciate this. It reminded me
- 51:34Speaker 3: a bit of some of the Mark Weber Fernando a
- 51:35Speaker 3: lotso battles that we used to see over the years,
- 51:37Speaker 3: because each of them knew how absolutely hard and unrelenting
- 51:40Speaker 3: it the other was, and there was a degree of
- 51:43Speaker 3: trust in some of those battles that they had over
- 51:45Speaker 3: the years, and that very much felt like what was
- 51:47Speaker 3: underpinning that Mark is a coster thing. For me. It
- 51:50Speaker 3: was a couple of laps of absolutely on the edge,
- 51:53Speaker 3: side by side, cut back, got a little physical at tires,
- 51:56Speaker 3: but it was a fantastic and the best part about
- 51:58Speaker 3: it at the end you could tell both of them
- 52:00Speaker 3: absolutely enjoyed it, even though one of them won the
- 52:02Speaker 3: battle and one of them did not.
- 52:05Speaker 2: But you know, that's really put to the test when
- 52:07Speaker 2: they're both battling for winds on the same bike.
- 52:09Speaker 4: In the same way.
- 52:10Speaker 2: We're never in that position and the same team competing
- 52:12Speaker 2: for wins. Yes, you know that is always the ultimate test.
- 52:16Speaker 4: So we're glad you chose.
- 52:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad you chose an on track one because
- 52:19Speaker 2: I'm sticking off track because we didn't talk about it
- 52:21Speaker 2: last week because it happened after the podcast and we
- 52:23Speaker 2: haven't had a chance to talk about this week. Charl
- 52:24Speaker 2: Let Clair recommitting moving to recommit with Ferrari, so moving
- 52:28Speaker 2: in the sense that he's not moving anywhere but staying
- 52:30Speaker 2: put it. It's unexpected in a couple of ways. Ones
- 52:34Speaker 2: because I'm pretty sure he had a couple of years
- 52:36Speaker 2: still to run on his contract, So it tells you
- 52:37Speaker 2: that what both sides obviously had to be eager to
- 52:39Speaker 2: do it, but one suspects Ferrari in particular was eager
- 52:42Speaker 2: to make sure that he signed up sooner rather than later,
- 52:45Speaker 2: but also tells us.
- 52:46Speaker 4: A little bit.
- 52:47Speaker 2: We have to assume about his faith in that project,
- 52:49Speaker 2: and you talk about how he had a lot of
- 52:51Speaker 2: faith in the way Fred Vasser, the team principal, is
- 52:53Speaker 2: leading Ferrari. I guess we can say that they know
- 52:57Speaker 2: the engine is the biggest problem. Maybe he really sees
- 52:59Speaker 2: a lot of fruitful work being done in the car.
- 53:02Speaker 2: We don't know until they upgrade their engine. But whatever
- 53:04Speaker 2: the case, it seems like he's going to be there
- 53:06Speaker 2: into the twenty thirties. He's probably going to be a
- 53:08Speaker 2: Ferrari driver for life. You'd think he doesn't seem willing
- 53:11Speaker 2: to contemplate ever leaving that team, no matter how much
- 53:13Speaker 2: it hits him, and it's turn him a lot, But
- 53:16Speaker 2: you know that's it's nice. I do like the idea
- 53:19Speaker 2: of drivers staying with a single team, becoming infinitely identifiable
- 53:22Speaker 2: with him, and I hope we obviously, of course, have
- 53:25Speaker 2: no particular allegiances here Rope one day probably not gonna.
- 53:28Speaker 5: Be this here is it?
- 53:29Speaker 4: One day he fulfills.
- 53:30Speaker 2: That destiny and does get the Ferrari title, because it
- 53:32Speaker 2: will be a mighty achievement.
- 53:34Speaker 3: I think what you're saying is if he retires with
- 53:36Speaker 3: no Formula one world titles and Nico Rosberg retired with
- 53:39Speaker 3: one Formula One title, there would be a massive injustice
- 53:43Speaker 3: in modern day Formula one because char La Clair is
- 53:46Speaker 3: a whirl chair bid hiding in plain sight and has
- 53:48Speaker 3: been for a very, very long while. I do admire
- 53:51Speaker 3: the glass eternally half full approach that he takes with Ferrari,
- 53:55Speaker 3: and yeah, perhaps he's working on the what's the old
- 53:58Speaker 3: saying that a stop clock is right twice? Perhaps that's
- 54:00Speaker 3: first working at this point because at some point, at
- 54:03Speaker 3: some point in the future, maybe this actually turns for him,
- 54:07Speaker 3: and I would not be unhappy if it did. I
- 54:09Speaker 3: think he's a very worthy world champion. He just needs
- 54:11Speaker 3: a card to do it in.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Yes, I just.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Feel like I just want to mention. I just I
- 54:18Speaker 1: just thought about this and I'm like, you know what,
- 54:20Speaker 1: I know we've spoken a lot about Mono GP, but
- 54:22Speaker 1: I'm adding to my moves of the day because I'm
- 54:25Speaker 1: adding an on track one. I just remembered Jack Miller
- 54:27Speaker 1: on the brakes, considering that he was in fourth position
- 54:31Speaker 1: for multiple laps. What he did on the Yamaha this
- 54:35Speaker 1: weekend phenomenal, And I know four riders crashed out and stuff.
- 54:39Speaker 1: If you knew Jack and you were watching him consistently,
- 54:41Speaker 1: his breaking markers were getting later and later and later.
- 54:45Speaker 1: He was doing whatever he could to hold off the
- 54:48Speaker 1: bunch of Hondas that he had behind him. Nick Marieny,
- 54:52Speaker 1: John Mia, Diego Marrera and then IgA Lekawona was just
- 54:55Speaker 1: hanging in the back of the pack as well the
- 54:57Speaker 1: fill in rides. So yeah, let's add Jack Miller to
- 54:59Speaker 1: that move of the week by stopping the moves for
- 55:02Speaker 1: as long as he could.
- 55:04Speaker 3: It was so good to see him so far up
- 55:06Speaker 3: the order and the fact that there was a degree
- 55:08Speaker 3: of inevitability that the equipment was going to see him
- 55:10Speaker 3: drop down the order again. My yeah, body made it
- 55:12Speaker 3: hard for everybody. And yeah, some of the late breaking
- 55:14Speaker 3: into some of those big stops at Balloton, you could
- 55:17Speaker 3: you could always imagine him sort of grimmscing but grinning
- 55:19Speaker 3: at the same time beneath the helper because he would
- 55:21Speaker 3: have thoroughly enjoyed himself because he hasn't beat up that
- 55:23Speaker 3: part of the grid this year at all as we know.
- 55:25Speaker 3: But yeah, he made it super, super hard and I
- 55:28Speaker 3: was actually really pleased for him that, you know, he
- 55:29Speaker 3: lost a place on the last lap, but to finish
- 55:31Speaker 3: shake he was clearly the best Yamaha all weekend there,
- 55:34Speaker 3: which is, you know, the best Yamaha. It's like being
- 55:37Speaker 3: the you know, the best camel racing jockey in Australia
- 55:39Speaker 3: right now. There's not too many of them around. But look,
- 55:42Speaker 3: he did a fantastic, fantastic job on a bike that's
- 55:44Speaker 3: clearly the worst in MotoGP and a rare bit of
- 55:46Speaker 3: good news for Jack, and he thoroughly enjoyed his time
- 55:49Speaker 3: up the front.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I think he did. He definitely did. But listeners, Sorry,
- 55:52Speaker 1: I'm going to get distracted talking about two wheels all
- 55:54Speaker 1: the time, but let's move back to four wheels because Michael,
- 55:58Speaker 1: you caught up with our now Supercars points a leader
- 56:02Speaker 1: Brock Phoenix, So let's listen to what Brock has to say.
- 56:07Speaker 4: Brock, welcome to the Pit Talk podcast.
- 56:09Speaker 7: Thank you thanks having me on.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Well, it's winter, we're halfway through the Sprint Cup, your
- 56:15Speaker 2: top of the standings again. Feels like everything's going perfectly well,
- 56:18Speaker 2: doesn't it.
- 56:19Speaker 7: I wouldn't say perfectly well. I suppose if you look.
- 56:22Speaker 8: From the outside and you looked at the standings, you'd
- 56:25Speaker 8: say it's been a really good start to the year.
- 56:27Speaker 8: But I think internally we probably expect a lot from
- 56:31Speaker 8: ourself here at Triple eight, and I certainly expect a
- 56:33Speaker 8: lot from myself. So it's been up and down. We've
- 56:37Speaker 8: been very consistent and I'm really proud of where we
- 56:40Speaker 8: are in the championship this year, but it hasn't been
- 56:43Speaker 8: as smooth sailing as.
- 56:44Speaker 7: We would like to hope.
- 56:44Speaker 8: Obviously, with Switch Manufacturers this year, it's been amazing to
- 56:47Speaker 8: be part of Forward, but it's come with some hurdles
- 56:50Speaker 8: and we're in that learning phase and I'd like to
- 56:53Speaker 8: hope that we're starting to see the top of the mountain,
- 56:56Speaker 8: but we're in motorsports, so unfortunately we'll probably never see
- 56:59Speaker 8: the top of the mounta. But overall, it's been a
- 57:03Speaker 8: good start to the year. As I said, happy with
- 57:04Speaker 8: where we're at, but we want to win some more races.
- 57:07Speaker 8: We always want to be better.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I want to look forward to some of those ideas,
- 57:12Speaker 2: but before we do, I want to go back to
- 57:13Speaker 2: Tasmania for just a moment, because it was really interesting
- 57:16Speaker 2: to watch considering where you started that weekend and then
- 57:18Speaker 2: where you finished it. You've obviously had weekend recoveries before.
- 57:21Speaker 2: It's heart of Motors swords, but how big of a
- 57:23Speaker 2: box tick was that considering that new car element, to
- 57:26Speaker 2: know that you were able to pull all the right
- 57:28Speaker 2: leavers and get there by the end of the weekend.
- 57:30Speaker 8: Yeah, Like going back to Friday, to be honest, it
- 57:32Speaker 8: was just extremely frustrating.
- 57:34Speaker 7: I mean, you know, we.
- 57:36Speaker 8: Say we roll it out of the truck not so good,
- 57:37Speaker 8: but we were sort of fifth in that first session
- 57:39Speaker 8: and I wasn't too phazed it being the first garage
- 57:42Speaker 8: at Tasmania, you don't get a slipstream, so I think
- 57:45Speaker 8: a lot of that first practice we felt okay. But
- 57:47Speaker 8: in that second practice session, with this new really weird
- 57:50Speaker 8: practice format that they've got, we actually really struggled.
- 57:54Speaker 7: So to finish Friday.
- 57:55Speaker 8: On fifteenth and then you know, skip forward a day,
- 57:59Speaker 8: a day and a half and be the car to
- 58:01Speaker 8: beat was obviously really strong for us, but it was frustrating.
- 58:04Speaker 8: I mean Friday afternoon, you know, it probably was some
- 58:09Speaker 8: doubts in my mind of where we were at, considering
- 58:11Speaker 8: we'd come off New Zealand where we weren't too happy,
- 58:13Speaker 8: especially at Real Perna and we'd sort of got to
- 58:15Speaker 8: Tasmania and we hadn't actually fixed anything.
- 58:19Speaker 7: So fast forward go to Saturday.
- 58:23Speaker 8: You know, I felt like I made a few mistakes,
- 58:24Speaker 8: probably could have had two pole positions on the Saturday
- 58:26Speaker 8: there and then go on and win Sunday. So look,
- 58:29Speaker 8: we turned our weekend around. Is that a surprise to me?
- 58:32Speaker 8: Probably not. We're pretty good at that these days, turning
- 58:34Speaker 8: it around, especially for a Sunday, But to be the
- 58:38Speaker 8: fastest car on Sunday is a huge positive. I mean,
- 58:40Speaker 8: we haven't been that for quite a few rounds now.
- 58:44Speaker 8: None of us here are shying away that we're still
- 58:46Speaker 8: pretty far away from where we want to be. But yeah,
- 58:49Speaker 8: I suppose we're probably a little bit known for that
- 58:51Speaker 8: here at TRIPLEY, but it's not something that we want
- 58:54Speaker 8: to be known for. Is rolling out fifteenth in practice
- 58:57Speaker 8: and hopefully by the end of the weekend we're there.
- 58:58Speaker 7: That's not where we want to be.
- 59:01Speaker 2: Those overall results, as you mentioned, it maybe looks like
- 59:04Speaker 2: things are going more seamlessly than they having that forward transition,
- 59:07Speaker 2: because they have been difficulties, but nonetheless top of both championships.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Is that a bit of a case then of people
- 59:13Speaker 2: not seeing the paddling that's going on underwater, and can
- 59:16Speaker 2: you tell us a little bit about how different it
- 59:18Speaker 2: has been to drive the Mustang and how much adapting
- 59:21Speaker 2: you've had to do given the margins and supercars are
- 59:23Speaker 2: always so tight.
- 59:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I suppose maybe from the inside a lot of people,
- 59:28Speaker 8: you know, especially internally seeing I wouldn't say the struggles
- 59:31Speaker 8: that we're going through, but it's just a transition period.
- 59:33Speaker 8: And probably the hard one for myself was that we
- 59:36Speaker 8: rolled out at Sydney first time in the Mustang and
- 59:39Speaker 8: you know, put on a little bit of a performance.
- 59:42Speaker 8: To be honest, we had a fantastic first weekend, especially
- 59:44Speaker 8: on that Sunday we were pretty dominant. It's just been
- 59:47Speaker 8: a little bit more challenging since then. So we've had
- 59:49Speaker 8: our flashes of brilliance. We obviously won that race of
- 59:52Speaker 8: the Grand Prix, but I'd certainly say that wasn't off
- 59:55Speaker 8: pure speed. And then we had a good run in
- 59:57Speaker 8: the second race at Taupo Real Perna.
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: We slowly got there.
- 1:00:01Speaker 8: But you know, I don't think I'm the only one
- 1:00:04Speaker 8: saying it in that we have not been the fastest
- 1:00:06Speaker 8: car for majority of the season so far. To be honest,
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: for probably four of the five rounds, we haven't been
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: the fastest car. So for us to be in that position,
- 1:00:14Speaker 8: you know, a lot of people say you've you've had
- 1:00:16Speaker 8: a really average start to the year, and I'd to
- 1:00:18Speaker 8: be honest, I'd personally say I have. We're leading both championships,
- 1:00:22Speaker 8: which is the most important thing. But you know, we
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: want to be able to win races. Obviously one a
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: lot of races last year, and I want to get
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: to the point where I'm you know, racking up two
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: or three race wins a weekend.
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: It's been a learning phase and driving wise.
- 1:00:35Speaker 8: To answer that part of the question, it's not too different.
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: You don't notice too much. It's more just the characteristics
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: which come with the car which we're trying to chase
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: a little bit. We've set up at the moment, so
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: it's been interesting. You know, it's like going from a
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: Yamaha to a Jacaddy. You know, it's probably not the
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: exact same setup.
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: It feels a little.
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: Bit different, or a Ferrari to an Asta mart. Everything's
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: going to be a little bit different. But I think
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: we're slowly getting on top of things here.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: What difference has it made this year? You know, in
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: previous years where Triple A's been on top, and when
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: you've been competitive, it's really been Triple eight, the GM
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: team and then a lot of chasing Forward teams. This
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: year it's yeah, Tripulate the Forward team and chasing FOD
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: teams as well, the packs a bit closer. Does it
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: make a difference knowing that your rivals theoretically have an
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: identical ability to perform at that same level at different
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: tracks compared to where you might have had some baked
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: in differences based on the manufacturers that change things at all?
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: I wouldn't really say changes that.
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: I mean, I certainly don't think we're at an advantage
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: being in a different manufacturer over the last couple of
- 1:01:35Speaker 8: years by any means. I think they've obviously spent a
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: lot of money, time and processes to make sure the
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: cars are very equal these days. And for sure, there's
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: tracks that suit the Forward, there's tracks that suit the Toyota,
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: and there's tracks that suit the Chevy, and you will
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: see that over the year, you'll see a little bit
- 1:01:52Speaker 8: of a trend. But we've always just focused on winning.
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: Where you know, one thing that I very strive on
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: is focusing us self more than the others. I mean,
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: if you're worried about what the other guys are doing,
- 1:02:02Speaker 8: we're only going to go backwards. So I think here
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: where great example is tas Mania. We won by eight
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: seconds and said how was the car? And I said, well,
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: it was all right, Like it wasn't it wasn't fantastic.
- 1:02:17Speaker 8: You know, we could have still been a further two
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: seconds up the road on ourself if we had a
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: great car. So we're always trying to improve. I think
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: that's one thing. I've always been very self critical, and
- 1:02:26Speaker 8: I think we can always improve on a few things
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: like that.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: To go back to some of those similarities or statistics
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: compared to last year, from that bird's eye view, Tazzy
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: was your first overall round win. I know it was
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: equal in Sydney, but the standout there at the end
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: of the weekend and the margin is a little bit
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: bigger this year though than it was after five rounds
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: last year. What was the debrief like ahead of this
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: season looking back at last year for where you can
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: improve considering that in some senses last year was record
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: breakingly good for you, Like, how do you sit down
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: and decide how you're going to improve.
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: Yeah, to be honest, I'll probably just turn the switch
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: off after Adelaide last year and just forgot about racing.
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: So I probably didn't do it.
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: He for reflecting at the end of the last season
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: like I probably normally would. But this year was all
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: about the change as no shying away. It was about
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: learning this new car and and those challenges are going
- 1:03:19Speaker 8: to come up throughout the year. Obviously, now we understand
- 1:03:21Speaker 8: what the final series looks like a little bit more,
- 1:03:23Speaker 8: there's a couple of things that we can do different
- 1:03:25Speaker 8: throughout the year to try and help prepare ourselves for that.
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: But as a whole, I mean, if you had five
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: or ten years like I had last year.
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: You're going to go down as one.
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: Of the best careers that can be sort of things.
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: So do I need to change the whole world?
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: No?
- 1:03:41Speaker 8: Do we need to understand the new car. Yes, So
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: that's our goal this year is understanding this new car.
- 1:03:46Speaker 8: And as I said, like, obviously we're in a great
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: position championship wise, but come to the end of the year,
- 1:03:51Speaker 8: you need to be able to win races and have
- 1:03:53Speaker 8: the fastest car, and we haven't been able to win
- 1:03:56Speaker 8: races as much as we'd like lately. So that's our
- 1:03:59Speaker 8: focus at the moment and is to find that pure
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: speed again which we had last year. One thing which
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: I think will come is when we do find the
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: speed like we had, you know, Tasmania at Sydney, we're
- 1:04:09Speaker 8: going to be able to put these weekends together. And
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: I think you've seen that this year. I haven't been
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: the fastest, but we've been managing to be leading the championships.
- 1:04:18Speaker 8: So we've done a great job in consistency. But we're
- 1:04:21Speaker 8: just trying to unlock that little bit of pure speed.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: That idea that the finals already a little bit into
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: your head now is interesting one. Obviously last year was
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: the first finals format, no one really knew how they
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: wanted to tackle it. Yeah, now you get a bit
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: of a sense of the rhythm of it the last
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: couple of years, like thinking about.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: Those last few rounds.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: You obviously had some of duro wins, but that hasn't
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: necessarily been the strongest part of your season. Batist has
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: been a little bit of elusive, and in the finals
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: last year you won races but ultimately didn't get it
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: over the line. Do you now start thinking about those
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: races like at what point does that become a not
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: the dominant part of your thinking because there are races
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: still coming up, But is that becoming a bigger part
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: of your preparation earlier in the year than it was
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: last year.
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: I wouldn't say so much.
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: But you just know what's coming now, and at the
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: end of the day, you're not going to sacrifice a
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: few races now for probably you know you don't want
- 1:05:12Speaker 8: to roll around in fifteenth for half of the year
- 1:05:14Speaker 8: because you know the finals is going to come. And
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: as much as you know what people sort of talked
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: about last year, who did it best in the finals?
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: I led the whole year. I led both rounds of
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: the finals. I led the championship going into the last race.
- 1:05:28Speaker 8: So I suppose people said I didn't play the finals, right.
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: We played the finals perfectly until the last race. So
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: although we didn't win the championship, I still strongly believe
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: that the best way to put yourself in that position
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: is to win the Sprint Cup, gain those fifty bonus points, ideally,
- 1:05:43Speaker 8: win the Dureau Cup, gain those fifty bonus points, have
- 1:05:46Speaker 8: that big buffer going into Gold Coast, and then you
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: want to lead going into every round and I think
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: they have changed the system a little bit this year
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: where if you are leading the points going into the
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: next round of finals, that's going to play a bigger
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: dividends in this year. So I think last year of
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: the first to second was like twenty points. I don't
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: know the number, but it's larger this year. So if
- 1:06:06Speaker 8: you can take a point points advantage into the finals,
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: are going to take that. But as I said, for
- 1:06:11Speaker 8: us right now, we know at the end of the
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: year we need to win races and we're just trying to.
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: Find our home with a setup.
- 1:06:16Speaker 8: I think last year we sort of got to this
- 1:06:18Speaker 8: Tasmania point of the year and we found out, we
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: found out where we wanted to be with our setup philosophy,
- 1:06:24Speaker 8: and we tinkered from there. At the moment, we're not
- 1:06:27Speaker 8: we haven't found where we want to be. We haven't
- 1:06:29Speaker 8: found our home. We're still search and we're still searching
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: the market for the home. So yeah, once we find that,
- 1:06:36Speaker 8: I feel like we'll be able to get a bit
- 1:06:37Speaker 8: of rhythm.
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: And you want to hit the finals at the bit
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: of momentum as well, well, let's.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Look at the next couple of rounds now, because you've
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: been and certainly said this this year, and I feel
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: like you've said the last couple of years as well,
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: that this is the decisive part of the season, this
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: middle part of the rounds.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: Is that more.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: About the type of tracks that are coming up before
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: the enjurers? Is it more about the fact that this
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: is the period of the year where there's a really
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: clear a rhythm, you know, one race every three weeks
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: more or less.
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: What's the thing that makes this such an important run
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: in the year for me.
- 1:07:07Speaker 8: We're back to our basics and we're back, as you said,
- 1:07:12Speaker 8: we're back to a rhythm. You know, when I look
- 1:07:13Speaker 8: at the circuits that we have for the first few rounds,
- 1:07:15Speaker 8: they're quite quite odd ones, not ones that we're going
- 1:07:18Speaker 8: to go back to very often. Sydney's I mean, if
- 1:07:20Speaker 8: you look at Sydney Waters dominated there last year and
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: didn't win a race.
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: I don't think it's won a race since then.
- 1:07:28Speaker 8: I dominated Sydney this year and was kind of on
- 1:07:30Speaker 8: the back foot for quite a few rounds.
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: So Sydney's a bit of an anomaly.
- 1:07:34Speaker 8: You go to the Grand Prix, which you could kind
- 1:07:36Speaker 8: of relate to the bend, and then New Zealand's kind
- 1:07:38Speaker 8: of their own different tracks. So for me and it's
- 1:07:42Speaker 8: it's probably a bad way looking at it. The championship
- 1:07:44Speaker 8: starts when you get back to Tazzy. You know, you
- 1:07:46Speaker 8: get back around four or five, whatever it is, and
- 1:07:47Speaker 8: you go through these next five rounds where I wouldn't
- 1:07:50Speaker 8: say the tracks are similar, but we got the truck
- 1:07:53Speaker 8: at every meeting. We can stick to our normal processes
- 1:07:57Speaker 8: and you'll start to realize, I believe, over the next
- 1:07:59Speaker 8: three three rounds, who are the real contenders. I'm sure
- 1:08:02Speaker 8: we have our idea on who the who the top
- 1:08:06Speaker 8: guys are at the moment, but I think over the
- 1:08:08Speaker 8: next few rounds everyone will start to find their place
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: a little bit and you know, you'll start to see
- 1:08:12Speaker 8: those guys shine through. So for me, obviously, coming into
- 1:08:16Speaker 8: rounds where I've had a fair bit of success, this
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: is where I want to start hitting my strides. Hopefully
- 1:08:20Speaker 8: over the next couple of rounds and has said, build
- 1:08:22Speaker 8: a bit of momentum, hopefully try and wrap up the
- 1:08:24Speaker 8: Sprint Cup again this year and get ready for an
- 1:08:27Speaker 8: exciting and enduring campaign and.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: Just finally on supercars of course, the next race in
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: this little run is Darwin, which in terms of success
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: for you is a pretty good one. Yeah, what is
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: it that works so well for you there? And how
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: excited are you to get back there?
- 1:08:41Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a weird one.
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: Obviously, I wish I knew the secret source because I'd
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: use it everywhere.
- 1:08:46Speaker 7: I could sell it for a million dollars.
- 1:08:47Speaker 8: But yeah, it's just I think it's always click for
- 1:08:50Speaker 8: me dar and even my rookie year, I qualified on
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: the front row there and then since the Gen three
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: I haven't been off the podium, which is crazy to
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: think about, but it obviously it's my driving style. I
- 1:09:01Speaker 8: don't know what particularly that is, but to be honest,
- 1:09:04Speaker 8: I just enjoy going up there. I always have a
- 1:09:06Speaker 8: great time going to Darlin. It's probably one of my
- 1:09:09Speaker 8: favorite events of the year, especially now after my recent
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: success there. But you know, I actually probably put too
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: much pressure on myself for Darwin, like I actually nearly
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: put it as one of my biggest events of the year,
- 1:09:20Speaker 8: and especially last year with the Triple Crown, I put
- 1:09:25Speaker 8: a lot of pressure on myself to actually win that,
- 1:09:27Speaker 8: probably more than a lot of the big races for
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: the year, which is probably pretty silly. But yeah, I
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: think the Triple crown makes it something. It's something so
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: hard to win. So when you win a race and
- 1:09:39Speaker 8: then you get another pole and you win another race,
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: it becomes this big thing that you know, no one's
- 1:09:43Speaker 8: really properly achieved. You know, Scotty obviously achieved it, and
- 1:09:47Speaker 8: then to do what we did last year was so
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: hard to do but extremely rewarding. So yeah, it's a
- 1:09:53Speaker 8: track that I absolutely love. Can't wait to get back there.
- 1:09:56Speaker 8: As I said, I'd love to keep the success going
- 1:09:59Speaker 8: up there this year.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: It's a source of secret even you don't know the
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: ingredients of it, but simply it seems to be working. Yeah,
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: for the first a little bit of change of Pacier.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: This weekend is the next round of the GTTAIL in
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Australia Queensland Raceway. You're the defending champion of the series
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: with Brad Schumacher, of course, and you're leading the standings
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: this year after a couple of rounds.
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: I think I'm run saying.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: You considered, or at least you said you considered perhaps
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: not re entering this series. I know your your non
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: supercars program has changed over the last couple of years.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: Is it more coming back to it?
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Is it more about defending the title or is there
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: something you're getting out of those additional days behind the
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: wheel and what are your expectations?
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: Is do we get?
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: Yeah, it's it's both really, I mean, first and foremost,
- 1:10:47Speaker 8: it's it's more miles.
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: It's more miles in a seat.
- 1:10:49Speaker 8: I mean, we're up to fourteen events this year for supercars,
- 1:10:52Speaker 8: but it doesn't feel any different because there's a doubleheader,
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: so you're just not too often a row, and then
- 1:10:57Speaker 8: the rest of the year is the same. So so
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: maybe if I wasn't doing GT, i'd be trying to
- 1:11:02Speaker 8: do something else, But it's.
- 1:11:04Speaker 7: Just it's local. It's easy to travel too.
- 1:11:07Speaker 8: I'm taking my engineer Marty with me this year, which
- 1:11:09Speaker 8: has been amazing. Obviously we get to work together a
- 1:11:13Speaker 8: lot of the time, but to do it again on
- 1:11:15Speaker 8: GT weekends is awesome. So I probably was a little
- 1:11:18Speaker 8: bit undecided whether I was going to do it again,
- 1:11:21Speaker 8: whether I try and focus on a couple of other
- 1:11:23Speaker 8: things this.
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: Year, But.
- 1:11:25Speaker 8: Yeah, we won the championship, so why not come back
- 1:11:28Speaker 8: and try and defend it. I don't know, you know,
- 1:11:32Speaker 8: I'd obviously love to win two in a year. Obviously
- 1:11:35Speaker 8: came very close to that.
- 1:11:35Speaker 7: Last year.
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: I don't think many of won two sort of Australian
- 1:11:39Speaker 8: championship level in car racing before. Maybe there's been one before.
- 1:11:43Speaker 8: I think Scafeye Scafe might have done it a while ago,
- 1:11:47Speaker 8: so obviously that'd be really cool to try and tick off.
- 1:11:49Speaker 8: But yeah, from my side, it's been good to do
- 1:11:52Speaker 8: more miles. I'd obviously love to do a bit more
- 1:11:54Speaker 8: racing overseas, but for the moment I'm certainly keeping busy
- 1:11:58Speaker 8: here in Australia.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: I'm sure Mark Skatee will give us a call if
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: that status.
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: Yeah that might be completely wrong, but.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: Well, you know, I good luck for this weekend and
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: for the rest of the Supercars series, and thanks so
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: much for joining him.
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: How rights, thanks having me on all right, Michael.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: Well, you know, Brox leading the championship and clearly by
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: more than what he was last year, but he says
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: he's not at the same level as what he was
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five. What did you take from that?
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think the underlying story for Brock
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: this year really is that he knows he can do it.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: I mean last year he should have done it. But
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: the question is all about the end of the year.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: That sublem made it a little bit by the fact
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: that Triple eight's challenges year is all about adjusting to
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: Ford and you know, I thought it was interesting how
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: much of a challenge he still talks about that being
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: despite the fact the results seem to mostly be there.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: At least the points are there. Can He's still leading
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: the title by more than he was this time last year,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: but the question is getting it done at the end
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: of the year. I wouldn't be surprised. I think anyone
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: will be surprised to se him winning the Sprint Cup.
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: He's in that position.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: We've got four or five races to go in the
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: Sprint Cup now in Duro's he probably needs'd love to
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: see for more wins in the endurance season. He's only
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: got one for his career and it wasn't at Bathurst.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: But it's all about finals. So it's a funny situation
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: with the finals campaign, isn't it, Particularly when you have
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: a driver performing at level he does, is that it
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: feels like it's a bit of a waiting game till
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: we actually get to the point the end of the season.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: That's not to say things can't change between now and then,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: but he knows. The gap for him is simply in
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: literally that last race, as he said, not even the
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: last rounds, making it and making it to the end
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: of the last race with an intact car. We'll just
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: have to wait and see if he can do it.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: But he's certainly on form.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: He definitely is on form there. But let's wrap up
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: all the goss that we've had from this weekend, the
