- 1:38SPEAKER_07: Hello guys we have a lot to go through tonight and I'm sure that I am just as excited to learn about this production as all the rest of you are so we're just gonna go ahead and dive deep into it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_07: Obviously we're doing things a little bit different.
- 1:54SPEAKER_07: A lot of the times we have Rachel and I a lot of the times we have Rachel and I and a guest okay so this is a big time first for us.
- 2:01SPEAKER_07: Not only do we have three guests we have three men as guests right so this is a ginormous ginormous first for us we're so excited we're starting out with a bang that's right yeah all right so we're headed behind the curtain of Wichita's own production of Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show.
- 2:26SPEAKER_07: So we'll hear from Jesse Berkey who's at the center of how this whole production came to be Ryan Schaeffer our director and Brent McNulty running tech and production and of course all this lovely decor and and turning a literal airplane hanger into a theater but first we're gonna play a little bit of this or that because that's just kind of how we do things on this podcast.
- 2:48SPEAKER_07: All right so this or that the way this goes this will be fun.
- 2:53SPEAKER_07: You know I didn't love that.
- 2:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah I and I love that.
- 2:56SPEAKER_07: So we have a few prompts this is kind of how we get the conversation going getting to know each other and and definitely set a theme for the night I will give a couple of prompts this thing or that thing.
- 3:07SPEAKER_07: We will start with Brent.
- 3:09SPEAKER_08: All right I need to be ready or in a little pro.
- 3:12SPEAKER_07: And then it'll go myself and then Jesse and then Rachel and then Ryan and then we'll do it a couple more times and then and then we'll get on with the show but this is usually a lot of fun.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Yes usually yeah usually a lot of fun always no broken bones no fights or anything yet so you know we're all good okay so first off Brent opening night jitters or closing night nostalgia oh closing night nostalgia thinking about it thinking about all you've accomplished and uh looking forward to the future looking forward to the future I love that yeah that's really good a lot of people come down from the cra the crashes kind of a lot because of all that adrenaline and excitement and you know get there get there get there get it done and so that makes sense I guess in a way because then you do get to reflect once it's all settled.
- 4:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah I love that yeah what's next what's next let's I love it I you know what I would think the same for me every time we do like this is kind of a little show a mini show experience but shows that I've been part of in the past it's kind of the same thing I grew up a dancer and and I I'm not a big fan of the anxiety going into the night but I do I am very familiar with the turning on once you get on stage and backstage and all of that.
- 4:33SPEAKER_07: But I I have to say looking back at the curtain calls and the roses and the hugs behind stage and everything like that it's definitely and the the nostalgia the celebration the memories and what's next.
- 4:45SPEAKER_07: Yeah I love that Brett that's great way to start us off.
- 4:49SPEAKER_07: What about you Jesse?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: I would also say closing night I feel like the opening night for me is are gonna be there.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: But if we're not prepared then I'm more nervous about opening night I think we're gonna be massively prepared for the show.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: So I have no worries about opening night.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah so closing night for me is always that nostalgia piece of just looking back also the the practice of letting go being like I could just do this show every night forever but we must move on and so I that's the that's it for me.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: And I get emotional every time.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah I love that I feel like well as like a viewer of a show I've never been like on the stage since like elementary school at least I feel like opening night because boom it's finally here I've got my tickets I'm excited to see it especially if I know about it and I'm just so excited to see what comes of it and like how the portrayal of everything is I think that's super exciting.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: Also just putting myself in the body of someone that would be on stage thinking I perform well with chaos like in a pitch.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: She does I I thrive in that so I think that I would be very proud of opening night like that's where you kind of like black out and you're like this is real.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: And those kind of moments are very pivotal in how you handle life and so I think opening night is probably the best but I do agree with the nostalgia of the closing night because that's when you can finally be like I am proud because I did it all because I did handle those first age jitters I did we did prepare or if we weren't prepared we figured it out so oh yeah pivot yes you know me I cheated both always we love we never associate you with tapes just thriving in it.
- 6:37SPEAKER_07: Right?
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah how about you Ryan yeah for me I would probably say opening night jitters as well I have always kind of viewed shows as like the opening is the birth and the closing is the death of it.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: Yes and you know I'm not a big fan of drama but I also feel there's something being on stage on opening night and it just makes you feel alive and it's really really fun and really exciting.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: And then you get to figure out what works what doesn't work and like play with it and make it your own and shape it in different ways.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: And that's what's fun along the journey but I love closing night as well but I would have to say opening night.
- 7:17SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 7:18SPEAKER_07: Amazing love that I love the variety here that's fantastic.
- 7:21SPEAKER_07: You bring more you bring more faces onto a show you get a little more variety and I think it's cool.
- 7:25SPEAKER_07: Love all the perspectives that's so much fun.
- 7:28SPEAKER_07: Okay Brent back with you.
- 7:30SPEAKER_06: Would you rather start from scratch or revive something beloved oh gosh I thrive in starting from scratch but in this instance something beloved I mean Rocky horror it's a classic but yeah any other time give me a big blank slate a big empty airplane hanger and I'm here to make something out of it.
- 7:51SPEAKER_07: Oh we've seen it before Brent we know that's freaking right though if anyone can do it Brent it's you yeah so you guys will have to stay tuned for the transition that's about to happen it's gonna be incredible as a know that Brent will pull magic out of the hat for a better term yeah I don't doubt that I'm I'm really excited to see everything everything come together you always do such a beautiful job I feel like for me it's I don't know I guess I would rather revive something beloved because it's it's like I like going to different shows with different renditions of things and like how did this person play like for instance Hamilton or you know or or even like King George in Hamilton or like the all the different iterations I love seeing character like how a person an actor can take a character still be the character but also make it their own so I think that would be the way that I would go I remember I was in was it taming of the shrew when I was in eighth grade and because I was a ballerina they turned my character into a ballerina I believe I was Cupid.
- 9:00SPEAKER_07: And so instead of just being Cupid, I was ballerina Cupid, which was so much fun.
- 9:06SPEAKER_07: I had the best time going around bopping people with whatever it was that I was holding at the moment.
- 9:12SPEAKER_07: But yeah I so I I think the beloved would be the way to go.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I'm a little disappointed your Cupid didn't use an arrow instead it used a hammer.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: That's interesting to me I would also choose revive something beloved I think because I wouldn't put creativity as like a strong suit for me and I think I'm also very impatient.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: So making something from scratch I feel like there's always a first draft and I think the first draft sucks in in every scenario.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: So if you're really proud of your first draft I think you started too late because of my my imperfections and my impatience I'm like let me just revive something that that was once beautiful so I have a template to go off of.
- 9:53SPEAKER_07: Nice yeah okay yeah I'm kind of the same way too like I lack a little bit of that too and I'll sit and overthink and spin my wheels.
- 10:00SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Oh so can you resay the this or that for me?
- 10:04SPEAKER_07: Yes absolutely so okay are are you more start from scratch type of person or revive something beloved?
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Okay I'm kind of shocking I like starting it depends what it is is the thing.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: I think that I agree with you Jen where it is interesting to see the hybrid.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: It's interesting to see different perspectives of something especially when you're talking about a show there's so many ways that you can portray it differently and that's why casting is so important.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: I can only imagine the different you know different auditions that you guys had to go through and how hard it was to make those decisions of how you want the each character to be perceived.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: So I think as as far as theater goes I think taking something beloved it's a challenge because you don't want to disrupt anything that everyone already sees as beautiful.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: You know they make movie number one and everyone loves it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: You make movie number two and everyone's like oh they didn't do it right.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Or they overdid it.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: So that's something you have to be super careful with and keep precious.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: So I think that I have a lot of respect for the ability and I think that it takes such attention to detail to do that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: So I personally if I'm creating a work of art or like going to do something I want to start from scratch because I want it to be fully mine.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: But in the theater world I think taking something beloved and doing a different version but yet keeping the elements all the same is very very powerful and and respectable.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to see what we're up for in the opening night.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah they they both offer unique challenges that's for sure yeah because you know you have to make it feel fresh even if it's a beloved thing as well as making it feel familiar to people so they actually can resonate with it which is a unique challenge.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: But as a playwright I I also have written a handful of plays.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah yeah there's nothing more scary than the blank page.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: So yeah it is daunting yeah it's very they're both challenging and fun but I would probably since I'm promoting Rocky horror I'd say beloved.
- 12:04SPEAKER_07: There we go.
- 12:05SPEAKER_07: Amazing Okay we have one more round of these and I I'm really excited about this question.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Is anyone winning so far?
- 12:14SPEAKER_07: You're winning you're winning I'm winning okay I'll take that okay I love the next question.
- 12:22SPEAKER_07: This will be our last one for this or that before we dive into the meat of everything.
- 12:26SPEAKER_07: Okay Brent behind the scenes chaos or front of house polish I like chaos.
- 12:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah I live in chaos chaos is my life chaos is my love language I mean it can't you can't make it better unless it's chaotic at first right yeah absolutely that's right you like crack them all with a shape.
- 12:45SPEAKER_07: Yeah well as you said to me we would never associate you with chaos either because no one knows if those curtains are closed babies right now yeah I think I'm I'm definitely the same way I love I I love things to look you know look at this tonight.
- 13:00SPEAKER_07: I mean the polish is beautiful this evening itself is gorgeous.
- 13:03SPEAKER_07: But I what I love about the behind the scenes chaos is again it comes back to the memories and the the inside that's where the inside jokes happen that's where the bonding with the rest of the cast members happen and and the you know and your tech staff and everybody else that's involved like it's funny and then I remember Nathan he was my son was just in a production this in musical this last February and they took state and it was like this big thing and they did wonderful and then and then we drive up to pick him so good I cried oh I know so many tears it was a wonderful production and then we drive up behind his school to pick him up from them unloading unloading the truck but they were unloading the truck into the dumpster I could oh my god that about sent me again but the inside joke of it all is like well we're done with this on to the next on to the next and now they're gonna do evil dead and I think that's really fantastic too.
- 14:02SPEAKER_07: So I I love the memories the interactions the inside jokes and of course like you can't get better unless you unless you mess up a little bit so that's why we have the whole messy as our polished thing you know so gotta go with that.
- 14:14SPEAKER_07: By the way a certain percentage goes to yeah oh yeah 10% of profits from our messy as our polished uh merch goes to Ballywood so you know what about you Jesse?
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: I was thinking about this while you guys are answering while listening to your answers to see what I could possibly steal.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: I think I love organized chaos if I'm a part of it.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: And I think being backstage I was in a show last year and being backstage with the other cast members and people are getting mic packs ready and going to get their props set and then somebody's showing up late naturally because they're artists and then makeup's not right somebody's missing a left shoe but it's it's all in place because you've got an amazing stage manager and you know it's coming together because it's the same every single night but everyone's got their things.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: And so watching that happen I guess watching the chaos happen knowing that I'm set makes people I don't want to be the the stage manager chasing down people saying why aren't you in your spot we're in we're going in five like ready five here we go I don't want to be that person but I'd love to just watch the magic come together everyone come into their spaces and then I want the front end to be polished front of house to be polished so those that are coming to enjoy the experience know they don't know any other way.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah like oh they did so well meanwhile we're back there I was talking to Ryan earlier like outside we're like oh yes this is fantastic inside it's like what is happening right now but nobody will know a thing.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: So I don't know the answer to that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_07: Take from that what you will yeah I think that's great.
- 15:54SPEAKER_07: I think that's wonderful.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: That's well answered yes yes I agree I you know like I said before I feel like I thrive under pressure and I like to see all of the ways that everyone I wouldn't call it a failure but you know the the lack of I'm missing a shoe or like you're late or running behind or whatnot or you're one inch off where you're supposed to be on stage or something.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: It all works because that's why you pick the everybody I think that the chaos and like you said the memories and inside jokes and everything that's the people that are involved in it that are going to really remember that.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah and that's what brings the power to the stage that is so glossed is because they're allowed to do that behind the curtain.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: You know and in the creative chaos.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Creative chaos is what I like and like you said too if there's an outline you know it's all gonna go well.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Everyone knows what to do.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Even if it gets a little crazy you know they know where to fall back in line I think that the stage outside view is just like the icing on the cake.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah the cake it's a messy process.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: You get your kitchen dirty baking a cake but you put that frosting on and it's gorgeous.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah and you don't know what's underneath that you bite into it.
- 17:03SPEAKER_07: And on this episode of is it cake fantastic one of our wine glasses is actually cake which one is Ryan what about you?
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah not to sound like a broken record but I also enjoy chaos yeah it's it makes you you know you just the energy and the honestly it makes you more focused in times that you need to be focused.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: So and nobody ever sits around you know afterwards and be like ah remember that show that went perfectly exactly love that show.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: No people like the drama and the experience of it.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: So yeah I mean you have to be able to be trusting of your fellow actors and collaborators and all of that stuff but yeah that's where then you can allow the chaos to thrive.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah yeah I know we put you last so you are like you're not a last here's that.
- 17:59SPEAKER_07: Well I love that I love that we're all little chaos lovers up here a bunch of freaks it's great.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: It is spooky season.
- 18:05SPEAKER_07: It is spooky season that's right.
- 18:07SPEAKER_07: All right so we are ready to dive into the meat of it so with that Jesse I'm gonna start with you and like of course natural conversation can just come as it may where did the idea to bring Rocky horror to Wichita actually start and was there a specific moment where it just kind of clicked that it needed to happen yes so going back to reinvigorating something beloved I went to my very first performance of Rocky horror at the Crown Uptown with my now wife then girlfriend Annika and Annika Wooten shout out speed painter screen and we went to the show and and for those of you listening feel free to play along but those watching who's seen Rocky horror before oh wonderful only a couple of virgins in the house great you'll find out we're gonna find out went to that went to that show and for those of you seen it I was the real life embodiment of Brad Majors in the show.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I mean I'm in the blazer and I'm on a date with this really attractive woman my my hottest homie as we decide and I'm watching this show and everyone's kind of half exposed and the males are dressed with fishnets and the women are dressed very brightly colored and they're singing and they're kind of raunchy and they're telling us what to say on stage and and then down the show starts and then down from the abyss comes this entity and I have no idea what I'm experiencing.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: I've seen Tim Curry in this but this is live and I don't know what's gonna happen.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: And then opens the cape opens and reveals as you guys know spoiler alert if you're listening to this and all I see is platform heels and then I see fishnets and then I just keep gandering up and then I see the bikini bottoms with a bulge and then I see a corset on there and then I see the the tattoo and I'm thinking my word this guy's rocking that outfit and I just felt very like in a weird space and I immediately I went kind of upset I glanced over and said is this what she's into upset I don't understand.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: So since then we went the next year and we dressed up in costumes and we won the costume contest.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Well now it's kind of an addiction it's just fun we went year number three and then we won that costume contest again and I was all this we have a tradition now.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: And then year number four it didn't happen.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: And then year number five another theater did it in town Roxy's downtown did a wonderful production of it and we went and saw that one fantastic didn't win the costume contest that year.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Shame on them and because if you guys saw I was Glenn look lovely and then we saw it again just a couple weekends ago in New York City on Broadway.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: And that was phenomenal as well and but leading up to that I realized it wasn't happening in 2026 and I've really enjoyed I fallen in love with Rocky Horror show and I was like man I called a couple theaters nobody was doing it I called a couple of the former performers in the show I said have you heard of this happening nobody thought it was going on and I have this trait that just believes I can do whatever I want and so I said I think we can do Rocky and that's when I messaged Brent and I said Brent what do you think about doing Rocky horror show and he said I'm in brilliant so we went right into the conversation I went in thinking let's you know shoot some numbers and see what the plausibility of it is like is it even possible?
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: And I swear from my perspective Brent was like hey do you have the rights?
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: And I was like well not yet why not we have the space we need the rights we've got to do that and I left that meeting feeling like I'm so far behind we have to move and there we have the Rocky Horror show which done that is so moving.
- 21:54SPEAKER_06: I love that I think that there's a little bit of the story that Jesse's leaving out what is that I want to hear I want to know you may have forgot to tell your hottie homie I did that you were doing it for
- 22:07SPEAKER_08: For a few weeks.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: I did not let her know until we officially had the rights secured.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:14SPEAKER_08: Whoops.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: And it was like in a passing conversation, I was like, oh yeah, Britt and I are gonna put on Rocky Horde.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: And she was like, Since when?
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: You didn't discuss it with your wife?
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I didn't know I needed your permission.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I'm learning this new marri thing.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: So uh after she sat with it for 24 hours and was kind of in this spot, uh, she realized you guys need help.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And so now she's come on board and she's absolutely made this thing seamless, organized, and beautiful.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Everything you see online was designed from her, not using any kind of AI.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: It's all from her, digitizing all of it.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And yeah, between between Brent, myself, Annika, and Ryan, this is gonna be just a wonderful thing.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:00SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I know that I'm looking forward to it.
- 23:02SPEAKER_07: And you're right, the social media and the digital president presence is absolutely gorgeous.
- 23:07SPEAKER_07: She has blown that out of the water.
- 23:09SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_07: Props to her for sure.
- 23:11SPEAKER_07: We love you, Annika.
- 23:12SPEAKER_07: You know this.
- 23:13SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 23:13SPEAKER_07: Okay, so a little bit of director's vision here.
- 23:16SPEAKER_07: So I've heard that you've actually played Brad yourself at Crown Up Town.
- 23:22SPEAKER_07: So, how does having lived inside this show as a performer change how you direct it now?
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I played Brad twice.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: So this is uh yeah, it's a lot of fun.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: I love being on stage and I love performing, and this show is such a joy to be a part of.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: And so also as you are creating as an actor, you see those moments where you're like, oh, that would be really funny, or that would be really cool if it was like this.
- 23:48SPEAKER_04: And and so you kind of get your director brain going anyway in that moment.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: And so I've tried to take the knowledge that I've had of the show, I've seen it dozens of times.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: I snuck out of my parents' house and told them I was going to hang out with some friends, and then I went and snuck and saw the movie that were being back in high school.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: So that was my first experience with Rocky.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: My mom actually, after we posted my bio on social media, my mom called me like 10 minutes afterwards and was like, You did what?
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: I was like, um sorry, sorry you're finding out this way, mom, but that's how that's what happened.
- 24:29SPEAKER_04: And so, yeah, I've just loved the show for a very long time.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: And then being a part of it, being in it, you really get to understand the nuance of the characters and and how they all interact with each other.
- 24:41SPEAKER_04: Even though this is like a classic B movie style, and like the acting's crazy and the storyline's insane, you know, there are some really heartfelt, fun, beautiful moments in the movie and the show.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: And so you really get to learn those very deeply.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: So it's really helped me understand the show a little bit deeper and then help me bring my creative direction to it.
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: So yeah.
- 25:07SPEAKER_07: I love that.
- 25:08SPEAKER_07: Wow, I thought that would be so much fun, honestly.
- 25:10SPEAKER_07: That sounds really cool.
- 25:11SPEAKER_07: I love that.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: What are some of your favorite, like you said, more heartfelt moments that we should be looking out for?
- 25:18unknown: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: I mean, I feel like, again, spoiler alert for people who haven't seen it, the second act with really from the floor show where everybody has been possessed or you know, disrupt or whatever, however you want to interpret it, into Frank's death and all of that is very, it's a very warm and sweet, in a way, experience.
- 25:43SPEAKER_04: And it really kind of helps people realize who these characters are and what they stand for.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: And I think just the message of Rocky Horror is really fascinating.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: It is it is about being yourself and being true to yourself in the fullest sense of the word, and so you get taken on that journey throughout the entire show, and so I think just we hope you leave the experience of coming to Rocky Horror Show Wichita, really feeling those emotions, but also feeling like you just had your socks rocked off, you know, all at the same time.
- 26:18SPEAKER_08: Love it.
- 26:18SPEAKER_07: Oh, that's awesome.
- 26:20SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm so excited.
- 26:22SPEAKER_07: I I mean this month can't go by past fast enough.
- 26:24SPEAKER_07: What is it, like 20?
- 26:25SPEAKER_07: How many days?
- 26:26SPEAKER_07: 27 until something.
- 26:27SPEAKER_04: Don't remind us, okay.
- 26:30SPEAKER_07: It's coming.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: It's it's forever.
- 26:33SPEAKER_04: We have forever given this right.
- 26:36SPEAKER_07: All right, we're putting you in the hot seat, Brent.
- 26:39SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 26:39SPEAKER_07: A hangar is not a theater.
- 26:41SPEAKER_08: True.
- 26:42SPEAKER_07: So what does it take to turn the B-29 dock hangar into a space that can hold the show and do it beautifully, like I know you will.
- 26:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so the the the hanger's origin story, you know, it was built to house a B-29 bomber, not to have big ass parties.
- 27:01SPEAKER_06: COVID changed all of that because proms are a rite of passage.
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: You have to have a prom.
- 27:06SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 27:06SPEAKER_06: And they needed space to have four to six hundred kids to be able to dance and have fun.
- 27:12SPEAKER_06: So we became a venue since then.
- 27:15SPEAKER_06: All kinds of events have happened here from galas and weddings and and ballet performances and dance recitals.
- 27:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 27:22SPEAKER_06: So, you know, turning that space, we kind of just think about it as a black box theater that, you know, it gets stripped down to its base between every event before between every performance, and then we build from scratch whatever that is.
- 27:37SPEAKER_06: So, you know, there's infrastructure there that we can utilize and our creative team can draw from.
- 27:44SPEAKER_06: But, you know, there are super talented set designers that are designing sets.
- 27:49SPEAKER_06: There's carpenters, there's lighting designers, you know, all of these local artisans are coming together to create this thing.
- 28:00SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, and then really the part that I'm most excited about is, you know, you're not walking into just a theater seat, you know, now that the Orpheum has comfortable seats.
- 28:11SPEAKER_06: We can't say, we can't say any talk shit about the Orpheum's uncomfortable seats because they're amazing.
- 28:16SPEAKER_06: But you know, you're you're not going to this uncomfortable seat.
- 28:19SPEAKER_06: You're going to come and have this immersive experience, cocktails, food, atmospheric lighting, people screwing with you when you walk in the door, putting, you know, tracking down the virgins and uh doing that that uh ritual with all of them.
- 28:34SPEAKER_06: So, you know, there's just gonna be so many immersive things that happen just to lead up to the show and then a live band.
- 28:41SPEAKER_06: You know, there's Jesse and I had the the uh directive, there's no AI and there's no pre-recorded music.
- 28:48SPEAKER_06: And you know, Ryan has taken that and found a great music director, live musicians, and it's just gonna be that's great, rock your socks off.
- 28:57SPEAKER_07: I love that.
- 28:59SPEAKER_07: We love a live music situation so much.
- 29:01SPEAKER_07: I'm excited to see how that goes.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Oh man, it's gonna be beautiful.
- 29:05SPEAKER_07: It sure is.
- 29:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah, everyone loves it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_07: Unforgettable, absolutely.
- 29:08SPEAKER_07: I know it just it adds an extra special element and just elevates things quite a bit.
- 29:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:13SPEAKER_10: Do you think the dancers can like and any actor or actress can like vibe better with live music as opposed to yeah?
- 29:21SPEAKER_04: I mean, live music really gives you a lot of flexibility, honestly, when you've got the musicians playing off the performers.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: There are things that we can do with the script and the show to really amplify certain moments.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: You know, we can actually you don't have to be like as a performer counting in your head trying to remember when you got to come in.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: And if you aren't, if you don't come in, you're screwed, you know.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's pretty much the answer.
- 29:47SPEAKER_04: You but with live band, they can be like, oh, they messed up this part, let's get let's get everybody back on track.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: So it gives you that flexibility, plus it just is such a fuller sound.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: It's yeah, it just sounds so much deeper and richer.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, feels and you can feel the energy from the band pulsing through the audience.
- 30:05SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's I completely agree.
- 30:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I do too.
- 30:08SPEAKER_07: I love that interaction, interactive, all the vibes becoming what supervision.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: It definitely makes it more cohesive.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Cohesive, yes.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: It does really power the energy in the room.
- 30:19SPEAKER_07: It really does, yeah.
- 30:20SPEAKER_07: All right, so back to you, Jesse.
- 30:22SPEAKER_07: What's it been like watching an idea turn into an actual hangar full of people building sets, sewing costumes, and rehearsing?
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: We're only in the first part of that.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: So I get to see the set build, the costume stitching, all that stuff happen, literally starting tomorrow through the next forever and forever.
- 30:40SPEAKER_08: Until it's ready.
- 30:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: What I think is interesting about having a a process like this or putting on a show like this is the amount of teamwork that actually comes together with it.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: And then realizing, I don't want to say, I don't want to belittle myself, but realizing how little I'm actually doing because of what I haven't learned or what I haven't developed in skills over the last year, right?
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: So what I've been able to do, thankfully, is put an incredible director in front of the show.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: And then uh have an incredible producing partner that's got us an incredible venue that knows lighting and knows like how to set things up and has they both have network connections in performance in theater.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: Without either of them, this show does not happen.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: I'm 100% certain of that.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: And the network that Ryan has, being able to know not just one musical director, but if that one doesn't work, another musical director.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: And then another band member.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, that doesn't work, another band member.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And the fact that just a little snippet, in our cast alone, we have three people who have played Frankenfurter before on stage, right?
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: So then, but they're playing different roles.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: So like the skill sets that are coming into the show couldn't have happened without Ryan's direction.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: True.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: And it's just seeing that came together, realizing I I don't I'm trying to help the best I can, but I'm kind of useless for most of it.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: So I'm trying to be useful at this point, besides just I'm gonna hold the mic at the beginning of every show.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: So come to the show because I'm seeing.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: So there we go.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: We'll see that.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: So that's to answer your question, what it's like seeing all that happen is both bittersweet.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: It's sweet in the fact of like, this is incredible what these people can do.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: It's bitter to the point of like, man, I suck at some stuff and I gotta get back.
- 32:25SPEAKER_07: This is how we learn, and it hurts.
- 32:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it'll just get sweeter and sweeter.
- 32:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, forever and forever.
- 32:33SPEAKER_07: That's right, yeah.
- 32:34SPEAKER_07: You can only go up from there.
- 32:36SPEAKER_07: That's amazing.
- 32:37SPEAKER_07: All right, so Ryan, what's your vision for this pro this production, and what do you want people walking out of the B29 dock hangers saying about it?
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: That was the best freaking thing they've ever seen.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's what I want to do.
- 32:49SPEAKER_04: That sounds great.
- 32:50SPEAKER_07: Let's go above that.
- 32:51SPEAKER_04: No, I feel like I want people, especially people who are who have never seen it before, people who have experienced it many, many times.
- 32:59SPEAKER_04: I want them taking away just that was such a wonderful, fun, welcoming experience.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: I feel like a lot of times, like when it comes to like people dressing up and being a little more scandalous and things like that, it can feel a little daunting for people who are new.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: Even still, I everybody there is just being their truest self and embracing who they are.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: So I I want it to feel like a welcoming experience for everybody, and then leaving that experience being like, I want to continue, I want to keep coming back to this thing.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: As far as the concept goes, it's gonna be sex, grunge, campy.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: It's gonna there's gonna be a lot of comedy in it.
- 33:43SPEAKER_04: It's all of these things rolled into one, and then it's also really I mean, in this year in particular, it's a love letter to Tim Curry.
- 33:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah, of course, yes.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: He was the reason that this show was successful in London and then in America.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: He's the reason the movie became successful, along with a lot of other players and parts.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: But you know, with his passing this year, we really want to give him the send-off he deserves.
- 34:07SPEAKER_07: For sure.
- 34:08SPEAKER_07: Absolutely, yes.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Well, everything you described sounds a lot like your experience, Jesse, where you everyone has a different experience.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: You were like, oh my god, is this what she's into?
- 34:21SPEAKER_09: But you guys were right, you kept coming back to it.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Well, I think that's what I find so unique about this show, at least for me, is if you've gone to theater, you've seen some pretty deep shows.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Just recently, Come From Away.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: Incredible show that Roxy's did.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: We've seen The Greatest Showman, we've seen Wicked, like all these have really deep meetings and they're real powerful, and we can cry at all of them.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: I will cry at a powerful song, at a standing ovation, even if it's just comedic, right?
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: I'm just emotional when it comes to stages.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: However, none of those shows have transformed my thought process the way Rocky did.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: And I think that's why it resonates with me so much.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Not that I'm a transsexual transvestite from Transylvania, any right, like at the show, but it's just it's opened my eyes to think about it.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: It opened my eyes to just people being open with themselves or learning who they are.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: They might not know what they're about as they're still learning, so they use Rocky Horror as a place to try it out.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: This is the one chance I can try this outfit on because nobody's gonna judge me within those hangar walls.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: And it's truly the gonna be the place for those seven to eight performances and a midnight showing and an after party, a place where the misfits fit.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: And I think that's what's so beautiful about this show.
- 35:32SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I agree.
- 35:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, okay, so as a newbie, as a virgin, as you all put it, I am like the more that I hear about this, and I know I've heard a lot about it, and by watching just the social media and everything and talking to Brent and Annika, but I'm just getting so incredibly like curious and excited, a little nervous.
- 35:53SPEAKER_06: Would you say you have anticipation patience?
- 35:57SPEAKER_06: Yes, I would say that.
- 35:59SPEAKER_07: And well, the good news is I know I've I'm very familiar with the soundtrack because for whatever reason that landed in my lap when I was a child.
- 36:07SPEAKER_07: But as a dancer, we did uh the time warp.
- 36:09SPEAKER_07: My I when I was in middle school and it was a lot of fun.
- 36:11SPEAKER_07: So, but that was like my introduction to what I did not know was Rocky Hore.
- 36:16SPEAKER_07: I had no idea where this music came from.
- 36:18SPEAKER_07: My dance teacher picked it, and that's how it landed in my lap.
- 36:21SPEAKER_07: But I love it, I think it's fun.
- 36:22SPEAKER_07: And I introduced my son to the time warp the other night on the on the drive home from our little walkthrough the other evening.
- 36:27SPEAKER_07: So I'm excited, and yes, much into patience.
- 36:32SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 36:34SPEAKER_07: All right, Brent, let's go back to you, big friend.
- 36:37SPEAKER_07: I'm so excited about this.
- 36:38SPEAKER_07: Okay, a little bit more about production.
- 36:40SPEAKER_07: Walk us through what production actually covers on a show like this.
- 36:44SPEAKER_07: What are you personally responsible for making happen?
- 36:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so you know, the Ryan has helped us curate a really great pool of local artisans, like I was saying before.
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: So, my job really is the technical director, whatever we're gonna call it, just get shit done person.
- 37:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:05SPEAKER_06: You know, just be a resource to what the hangar has to offer, you know, what what resources we have as a company to help all of those people pull off this thing in all the time in the world.
- 37:19SPEAKER_06: Forever and forever.
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: And then, you know, I I think just kind of play inner interference if there if there's there's a problem.
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: And then when we move into the into the space, just make sure that that all goes off, you know, super easily.
- 37:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and you know, one thing that kind of going back to this, this other, all these other conversations that we've had, acceptance, inclusion, all those things that that Rocky is about.
- 37:42SPEAKER_06: I think what I'm most excited about from the the tech side of things, from the staff side of things, Aya, who is our choreographer, this is her first time choreographing for music theater.
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: Amazing.
- 37:55SPEAKER_06: You know, we we have all these people who are really great at their thing, but maybe they haven't done this thing before.
- 38:01SPEAKER_06: So we're we're giving all these people opportunities that they wouldn't normally have anywhere else.
- 38:06SPEAKER_06: That even boils down to the to the cast.
- 38:09SPEAKER_06: You know, we are casting, you know, when you go see Roxy's or Mosley Street or Music Theater, you know, you see a lot of familiar faces because Wichita's jam-packed with amazing talent.
- 38:19SPEAKER_06: Yes, it is.
- 38:19SPEAKER_06: We're gonna see new faces, which I am so passionate about, you know, giving these newbies opportunity.
- 38:27SPEAKER_06: It's super super exciting.
- 38:28SPEAKER_06: So that is happening on the technical side of things too.
- 38:32SPEAKER_06: Oh, that's so cool.
- 38:33SPEAKER_04: I'll also say, as far as what they are doing as producers, is they're so good at just Jesse Ann Brent, just I will come to them with crazy ideas or things like that, and they're never like, nope.
- 38:47SPEAKER_04: Which I appreciate.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: Like they're like, let's see if we can figure out how to make that work.
- 38:51SPEAKER_04: And if we can't, that's fine.
- 38:52SPEAKER_04: But if I appreciate their willingness to to collaborate and and find solutions.
- 38:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and this is not a one-off show, you know, knock on wood.
- 39:01SPEAKER_06: This is the new home of Rocky Horror from here on out.
- 39:04SPEAKER_06: Thinking long term, like how do we make this a great show year one?
- 39:09SPEAKER_06: How do we melt faces year two?
- 39:11SPEAKER_06: How are we blowing minds year three?
- 39:13SPEAKER_06: You know, so it is it is a long game that that we're thinking about as this show is being created.
- 39:19SPEAKER_07: That's fantastic.
- 39:21SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I I love that.
- 39:22SPEAKER_07: I know I think part of like I we're thinking about this too long term.
- 39:26SPEAKER_07: Like we're hoping tonight turns into marketing material for next year when we do this night, you know?
- 39:32SPEAKER_07: Wouldn't that be amazing?
- 39:33SPEAKER_07: I would make it melt some faces next year, you know?
- 39:37SPEAKER_07: We'll melt faces too, Brent.
- 39:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 39:40unknown: Yes.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: And we already have a great start.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: Look at our crowd flying.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: Like I just can't.
- 39:45SPEAKER_07: I know.
- 39:45SPEAKER_07: So I I wanna I wanna ask each of you one more question before we go.
- 39:48SPEAKER_07: Um, we'll do one more round.
- 39:50SPEAKER_07: So uh Jesse, yes, what do you want first timers who've never seen Rocky Horror to know going in?
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: First time, never seen it going into the show.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Don't take yourself so seriously.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Dress in costume, okay, get the party pack, get the after party ticket.
- 40:09SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Talk to the the people that are coming around asking you if it's your first time, let them do whatever they do if it's your first time to give that away.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Just enjoy the experience.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Like play into the thing for that night.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: You have one run one responsibility to yourself, and that's to make sure you have a good time.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 40:27SPEAKER_07: I love that.
- 40:28SPEAKER_07: Okay, that sounds easy enough.
- 40:30SPEAKER_07: I think I can get down with that.
- 40:33SPEAKER_07: What about you, Rachel?
- 40:35SPEAKER_07: Oh, um going in.
- 40:37SPEAKER_07: Well, how are you feeling about being a newbie to this whole thing?
- 40:42SPEAKER_07: I know.
- 40:42SPEAKER_07: I am too.
- 40:43SPEAKER_07: I really, really am too.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Like I even tried on some cutesy sequencing to make a fit tonight because everybody's a little bit more low-key.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: On, yeah, when we go to the show, it's definitely gonna be, we're gonna pull something together, you know.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: There might be wigs, there might be nets, there might be something leather.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: But I think I want everybody to come and show up with some energy.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Whether if you don't have the ability to dress up, show up with energy.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: You know, bring something fun.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Do your eyeliner a little darker, do something crazy with your hair.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Like have fun.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: Wear a party hat.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: You know, I think everyone's gonna enjoy however anyone shows up.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: You know, don't overthink it.
- 41:23SPEAKER_07: Don't overthink it.
- 41:24SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think that's a great message going into these performances.
- 41:27SPEAKER_07: It's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 41:29SPEAKER_07: Okay, so Ryan, what's been the most challenging part of directing this one?
- 41:34SPEAKER_04: Oh, all the actors are just maids and butts.
- 41:37SPEAKER_04: No, we haven't even had rehearsals.
- 41:39SPEAKER_04: We haven't started rehearsal yet.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: So There is an actor in the house.
- 41:46SPEAKER_07: Welcome, Ledger here.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Let us leave, just in the little hall feature.
- 41:51SPEAKER_06: Let's leave, let's squeeze him in, ask him a couple of questions.
- 41:54SPEAKER_07: Please come up here.
- 41:55SPEAKER_07: We would love to chit-chat with you.
- 41:57SPEAKER_04: If I was gonna answer your previous question about what to look forward to in just looking at this man in his underwear pretty much for the entire show.
- 42:05SPEAKER_04: So that is so exciting.
- 42:09SPEAKER_09: All right, yeah, let's give an introduction, tell everyone your name, and then you're even gonna be.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: Hi, I'm Justin O'Leal, and I am playing the titular Rocky in Ruby World TV.
- 42:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, thank you for coming and thank you for being willing to come up here and chit-chat with us.
- 42:26SPEAKER_07: We're excited to have you.
- 42:30SPEAKER_07: Okay, so what are you most excited for going into Rocky Horror?
- 42:34SPEAKER_07: Like I know you guys are just about to go into rehearsals and all of those fun things tomorrow.
- 42:39SPEAKER_07: Oh my gosh.
- 42:39SPEAKER_07: Wow, what a warm-up.
- 42:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 42:43SPEAKER_05: No, you question.
- 42:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 42:44SPEAKER_07: No, yeah.
- 42:45SPEAKER_07: What what what is what are you most looking forward to over this this whole experience and going into rehearsals?
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: And this is my first musical professionally.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: Oh, a lot of people are just like, You've never done a musical.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: No, I've never done one.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: But I'm a musician first and foremost.
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: So I'm usually in the pit in a production and supporting actors usually in my in my work.
- 43:04SPEAKER_05: And so this is the first time I did an opera in the summer, but this will be my first like musical, like theater debut, you could say, with choreography and not so many clothes, but that's okay.
- 43:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that's fine.
- 43:16SPEAKER_07: That's great.
- 43:16SPEAKER_07: Well, so what made you decide you wanted to go out for this for to audition for it?
- 43:21SPEAKER_05: Jesse, it's his fault.
- 43:21SPEAKER_07: It's Jesse's fault.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: So actually, so everyone watching, you're welcome.
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: It's Jesse's fault.
- 43:26unknown: I love that.
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: No, he messaged me because he had said that they were doing Rocky as a production.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: And he was like, You really should audition.
- 43:33SPEAKER_05: And I was like, Shut up.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: And he was like, No, yeah, do it.
- 43:37SPEAKER_05: And so I I auditioned, and that was fun and scary and everything, because I've never done a theater audition for a musical, also, which involves usually with an audition, you'll have like reading with people, which sure, like I've done that before, but this had a dance call.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 43:53SPEAKER_05: And I was like, Oh, we have to learn a combination, and it was the whole like time warp dance, plus like the verse, which I've only seen Rocky three times.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: So I'm not that familiar with any of the choreo anything.
- 44:05SPEAKER_05: And they went through it three times really fast.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: Like five minutes, and they said, Alright, go dance.
- 44:12SPEAKER_09: It is super.
- 44:14SPEAKER_05: And they were like, and also, you know, having the directors and everyone in the room looking at you, like, okay, now what is he doing?
- 44:21SPEAKER_05: We need but it was it was fine.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: It was cool.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: I was having my Aunt Viv moment from Fresh Prince.
- 44:25SPEAKER_05: It was great.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: It was fun.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: I love it.
- 44:27SPEAKER_08: That's great.
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: Well, so how how of all right?
- 44:30SPEAKER_07: So what what are you hoping to take out of this whole experience going out with out of it after everything's said and done?
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm hoping my takeaway.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: I'm hoping just to develop my craft more as an actor.
- 44:42SPEAKER_05: This is my only second time getting to incorporate both music and acting into one role.
- 44:46SPEAKER_05: And so just learning as much as I can from our lovely director, from our producers and all of the crew and everything, and just seeing how much I can embody a character in a short amount of time.
- 44:58SPEAKER_07: Well, it seems like you're part of the A-Team here.
- 45:00SPEAKER_07: So you got the A-Team production, direction, everything.
- 45:04SPEAKER_07: So I think you're in good hands.

- 45:34SPEAKER_07: Does this motto land different?
- 45:35SPEAKER_07: The don't dream it, be it.
- 45:37SPEAKER_07: Does that does this motto land differently for you on the production side than it might for a performer?
- 45:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, it I've always hoped that there would be some live theater happen in in this space.
- 45:48SPEAKER_06: So for me, it is a dream come true during cliche.
