- 0:16Hello, and welcome to another episode of Breaking Mayberry, the only podcast that
- 0:21shows that science and faith can work together in harmony if you believe and also
- 0:28don't care about science at all whatsoever. I'm one of your hosts. I'm
- 0:34Marty Schneider. The other host Dan Ludwig, and we're doing another episode of
- 0:39Parental Control, the miniseries where we talk about we bring on guests to talk
- 0:44about shows that we associate with our parents, either a show that was your
- 0:49parents' favorite when they were a child, your parents favorite when you were growing
- 0:53up, or your parents favorite show. Now, no one's taken us up
- 0:56onto parent's favorite show now. Anyway, we have a very special guest.
- 1:00I'm very excited for this one. We started this mini series with Dan's sister.
- 1:06We're closing it with my sister. Mickey Schneider is with us for the
- 1:11second time on this show. Mickey, Hello, thank you with welcome for
- 1:14being on the show. Hi, little sister, Hello, what's going on?
- 1:19Hello, big brother. I'm one. I'm on holiday break from being
- 1:25a teacher, so I am very relaxed and calm. It's great. This
- 1:30is fun, this is going to be great. It's a it's a zoom
- 1:33caller. It's a call between Mickey and I where we're not just gonna shit
- 1:36talk our parents. I think we might a little premises parents. If you
- 1:42don't do that, there is no show, I mean a show that we're
- 1:47going to talk about is shit talking our parents enough. The fact that she
- 1:51even watched this show named after it. Oh you okay, yeah you got
- 1:57you got to the punchline. I want to say your name eight McKayla.
- 2:00So, like I spent like a full day coming up with like shows about
- 2:06dad, right. I came up with tons of dad shows and dad movies,
- 2:09mostly the A Team. I really just wanted to talk about the A
- 2:12Team, but Dan, you and I can talk about the A Team at
- 2:15any time. And then all of a sudden, like Mickey, my sister
- 2:19Michaela just reminded me, sent me a text and said, remind me.
- 2:23You know I'm named after doctor Quinn. Right, Oh, so you're doing
- 2:31some angry texts after watching this show. Yeah, how fucking dare you?
- 2:38I had like two thoughts, Like at one point I was like, yeah,
- 2:40mom, Mom was like she wants her to be a badass independent woman,
- 2:46like go girl. And then I was like what the fuck mom?
- 2:50Like in one episode, they just said her name like almost in every sentence.
- 2:54It was like Michaela, Michaela. And I was like, did that
- 2:57word just get stuck in her head at some point? I'm glad. I'm
- 3:02glad that you asked that question, Michaela. First off, I do want
- 3:07to say, you are so lucky that it was like illegal in the nineties
- 3:13for characters to be different at the end of a show than they were at
- 3:15the beginning of the show, right, because now we have like the Calisi
- 3:20rule. Dude, I name your child after a TV character while that TV
- 3:23show is still on the air, because it can go back, it can
- 3:28backfire on you real hard. Right, You're so lucky that that shit didn't
- 3:31happen. Like what if in like season six, doctor Quinn should have like
- 3:35just turned to the camera and said, oh, by the way, I
- 3:38don't think Jews should be able to own property, and you're four years old
- 3:44at that point, Like how fuck would you have been? Okay, it's
- 3:53a good thing. I don't go by mkay life, but okay, okay,
- 3:59So I'm glad you brought that up. So most of the time we
- 4:03have the guests choose the episode. This time, I chose the episodes we
- 4:06were doing for us, and I chose the episodes that we did for two
- 4:12reasons. So we're doing season two episode five, Saving Souls, and we're
- 4:19doing season six, episode eighteen Birdman. The Birdman episode I chose because I
- 4:28literally typed in, looked in to google list of worst Doctor Quinn episodes.
- 4:33That standard move is whenever we have to watch a show we don't know,
- 4:36we just go lea, we just google that. I'm not being fair to
- 4:41this show. I'm not giving it a fair shot. Mchayley. You've given
- 4:44it, Mickey again, way more of a fair shot than I have,
- 4:46because you went above and beyond what was asked. Anyway. So I looked
- 4:49through a list of the worst episodes and Birdman was on several of those lists,
- 4:54And of the ones on that list, it seemed like it would be
- 4:57the funniest one to do. It was that or the one where everybody in
- 5:00town gets involved in a circus, like has to learn circus performing. So
- 5:05I think I may have pit made the wrong choice. And the reason why
- 5:09I chose season two episode six, Saving Souls, I'm sorry. Season two
- 5:14episode five is because That episode originally airs November thirteenth, nineteen ninety three,
- 5:21a weekend, a month and a week before you are born, before you're
- 5:26born, And so I'm doing the math here basically, and I was trying
- 5:30to figure out, Okay, so you're born in December, that means nine
- 5:33months before that is March. That's the end, and so give it a
- 5:39month probably before Mom finds out she's pregnant, so it's probably April April.
- 5:44Maybe by the time she's like getting ready, that is when season one of
- 5:48Doctor Quinn ends. So by the time all pregnancy is confirmed and everything and
- 5:54getting ready for a baby, season one of Doctor Quinn is over. And
- 5:57I started trying to figure out what episode was it. What was Mom watching
- 6:02when she decided this is it? This is what I'm going to name my
- 6:06daughter, And there's an without asking Mom, there's a non zero chance it
- 6:13was this one. I know that a month is like along to a month
- 6:16out is a long time, you know, but to wait before settling on
- 6:20a name, I'm sorry I did not remember this. I was five.
- 6:25I had my own shit going on, just our kindergarten, so that was
- 6:30a big thing. So I don't know It's also possible. You know,
- 6:34there are summer reruns, and I'm kind of ignoring that for the sake of
- 6:38the bit, but I like, one in eight chance it was this episode.
- 6:43I feel like you're passing on curse knowledge of what TV show your parents
- 6:46were watching when she was conceived, Like this is this is something we should
- 6:51not know about ourselves. I mean, Mom's whole story, though, was
- 6:57that she was watching because I'm born, you know, Intober, two weeks
- 7:00before Christmas and all of the season stuff comes out, and she said she
- 7:04was watching the Doctor Quinn like Christmas episode, and then was like, I'm
- 7:11gonna name her MICHAELA. You probably could have just asked and watched the Christmas
- 7:16episode, but let's edit that would have been seasonally powerful. Hang on,
- 7:21hang on a second. I'm not I'm not saying Mom is lying. I
- 7:29don't remember the timing that you were born, because but that said, it
- 7:33could be true because uh, Mike's dream a Christmas Tale. The Christmas episode,
- 7:39season two, episode eleven airs on your birthday, on the day you
- 7:43were born, so it sort of depends. I think she would have been
- 7:47in the hospital giving birth to you, you know, probably not watching CBS
- 7:53at the time, but she said she watched it at the hospital. Okay,
- 7:58background on this the fucking story, because he get out of his ass
- 8:03here. It was Barty's actual It was his Christmas performance or holiday performance at
- 8:09the school. You know. It was at the school, elementary school.
- 8:11And Mom went into labor with me at the elementary program, and then they
- 8:16went to the hospital and Mom watched Doctor Quinn and her like during the labor
- 8:20before I was ready. And then while she was watching it, she just
- 8:24decided to name me Michaela and then gave birth to me. So I destroyed
- 8:28your your thing and then with named Michaela. I mean, maybe that's the
- 8:33story I was told. Okay, okay, that's possible. It's possible.
- 8:35You might she might have been in labor for a long time. We should
- 8:39we should, like, Mom should have some say in this, but call
- 8:41her somebody tis her right now? Because and the reason I say this is
- 8:48because Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman aired like Saturdays at eight, That's true, So
- 8:54it aired on a Saturday, so she maybe she went It's possible that we
- 8:58had the the school play on a Friday. She goes into labor on a
- 9:03Friday, she's still give I'm just saying, there's what we need to do
- 9:07is look at a calendar from nineteen ninety three, and only there was some
- 9:11way we could do this anyway. Anyway, I'm gonna say she was thinking
- 9:16about it. I'm you know, I'm not not not to take the mystique
- 9:20out of it. It's a sweet story. I like the story, but
- 9:22I'm gonna say mom was thinking about it probably around this time. I think
- 9:26it's a all right, so saving souls am I also could have just made
- 9:31that story up. No, I've I've also heard that story. I have
- 9:35also heard that story. Oh Jesus, so this is good. This is
- 9:43fun. We're doing some good shit. Before what you got Dan? Before
- 9:46a specific episode, how do everybody feel about this television program that we all
- 9:52watched? Best SZI acting I've ever seen just everyone size a lot, just
- 9:58so much size I act everywhere. A lot of a lot of signing,
- 10:01a lot of wistful looks off into the distance, a lot a lot of
- 10:05shrugs too, a lot of like looking at each other across the room and
- 10:09being like, I don't know what's going on? Do you know what's going
- 10:11on? Oh? And then shrugging at each other, loved to be deep
- 10:16in thought. My other question is if she's the only doctor in that area,
- 10:24Like, how long does she spend on a case, because geez luis,
- 10:26I'm sure someone has consumption at this point, and she's over here,
- 10:30like spending four days on this person. Johnny Cash does. Johnny Cash has
- 10:33consumption? He does. I looked this up. That that that's the other
- 10:39reason I chose this episode because Johnny Cash Cash the second time that we've covered
- 10:46a Johnny Cash performance on this show. I might hate Johnny Cash as an
- 10:50actor. I might, Oh, he's crap. He's so bad because he
- 10:54just sings all of his lines like a dipshit. Hello, I'm the local
- 11:01gunslinger like he's doing like he's pretending to be a ghost. I normally I
- 11:07do a one sent in summary from Wikipedia. There is no one sent in
- 11:11summary. Every single uh like description on Wikipedia here is a fucking paragraph long.
- 11:18So I'm gonna do the show. Yeah, I'm way too long.
- 11:24I'm gonna do the first sentence of this Saving Souls airs November thirteen, nineteen
- 11:28ninety three, written by directed by James Keach, who is only like notable
- 11:37for being Stacy Keach's younger brother. When when sister Ruth Mackenzie, a traveling
- 11:41faith healer, comes to town, Horace's gout is healed, but doctor Mike
- 11:46is not impressed. Johnny Cash returns to reprise his role as kid Cole.
- 11:52So this is the like apparently not the first time. It's actually the second
- 11:56time of four that Johnny Cash has shown up as a bounty hunter. Yeah,
- 12:03so I will say I was so on board with this show for thirty
- 12:11of its forty minutes. I was deeply on board. I was like super
- 12:16interested in this. I understood, like it's boring, it's not a very
- 12:18interesting show, but I got the appeal. There was a thing in the
- 12:22nineties about like having Westerns but like with a none of the violence or subversion
- 12:26of Westerns, just kind of home. I understood it. I was a
- 12:30little interest in the story, and I was interested in in the stance that
- 12:33it was taking. And then the last like ten to fifteen minutes of this
- 12:37show takes a hard left into Assholeville and does one of the like shittiest,
- 12:43like most cowardly things I've ever seen a television show do, and basically calls
- 12:50into like question the entire existence of its main character. So can I just
- 12:56want to briefly describe the arc of this, which is they have they have
- 13:01a priest in a church and it's like fairly low key, and then a
- 13:05new preacher comes into town and is like, everybody needs to be way more
- 13:09religious. And then normally, in a normal show, they would there would
- 13:13be a thing where either she would be revealed to be like a con woman,
- 13:16or it would be like, no, we don't need to be more
- 13:20religious, we all just need to calm down. And instead they're like,
- 13:24thank you lady for teaching as Ale to be way more religious. You were
- 13:28totally right. Yeah. It wasn't even just be way more religious. It
- 13:33was it was like if you don't believe hard enough, you know, then
- 13:37you're gonna stay sick. And doctor Quinn's like science, and then at the
- 13:39end she was like science kind of. It's so bizarre because this show,
- 13:46for the first half is very clearly setting up Sister Ruth as being a con
- 13:52man. It is shot and written the exact ways that a con man would.
- 13:58When it doesn't work, she makes up an excuse and blames the fuck
- 14:01it we're doing. We're going beat by beat here opens up, opens up
- 14:05in the church, and everybody's really bored. Actually hang out a second.
- 14:13Let me go ahead and for people who do not know what this show is,
- 14:16let's go ahead and describe Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman. Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman
- 14:20is a was a drama that aired on CBS for six seasons and two movies.
- 14:28Yeah, two movies, two movies, two like made for TV movies
- 14:31wow. And it is a western about a woman named doctor MICHAELA. Quinn
- 14:37from Boston, Massachusetts, who is a doctor. Uh. And she goes
- 14:43to Colorado Springs hoping to you know, open up a practice there. I
- 14:50guess in the first episode she's working for her father's medical practice and her father
- 14:54dies and that's why she goes out to Colorado. Uh. And so she
- 15:00rives in Colorado Springs in eighteen sixty seven. She's the only doctor in town.
- 15:03And I guess the entire show is based around a lady doctor round a
- 15:09room from and and so and so it's it's a doctor show. We've talked
- 15:13on this show why doctor shows work. Doctor shows work really well because you
- 15:18can bring in guest stars and have them show up, mix shit up,
- 15:22and then leave immediately, either by dying or getting well and going away.
- 15:26Uh. And that's basically the concept, but it also kicked off a whole
- 15:30slew of Christian but not Christian TV shows, like shows that aired on like
- 15:37CBS and we're branded like family stuff and just kind of flew under the like
- 15:43chicken soup for the soul radar of Christianity, you know, stuff that's like,
- 15:48no, it's just family themed. Touched by an Angel energy it inspired
- 15:54Touched by an Angel. And in fact, if I remember, if I
- 15:56remember right, she had taste, which I mean a specific taste. Yeah,
- 16:04And if I remember right, actually there was a period of time when
- 16:07they aired back to back. I think Doctor Quinn was the leading show to
- 16:11Touch by an Angel. I also think Jane Seymour, who is Doctor Quinn,
- 16:15was also in an episode of Touch. I feel like, almost certain
- 16:21almost certainly, what is that show about? Is it just like people are
- 16:25like, I have problems and then an angel shows up and is like magic.
- 16:30Yeah, it's the idea, I think too. For both of these
- 16:32shows, it's like we're progressive Christian, we believe in all these things,
- 16:37but also like and you can see that in the episode. It's kind of
- 16:41the like, we don't care about your lifestyle, but we're gonna be nice
- 16:45to you, even though we still think you're going to hell. Yeah,
- 16:51it's like under the guides of like kindness, but also you're not you're not
- 16:56a good Christian. Doesn't matter that you're a huge piece of shit. We're
- 17:00here for you regardless, are you. Yep. Long time listeners of the
- 17:04show might be a little bit confused hearing me say this. So, Mickey
- 17:08and I are Jews. We were not raised Jewish, though we were not
- 17:14raised in the temple, and our mother had let's say, a wide variety
- 17:18of religious experiences and beliefs while we were growing up. So yeah, we'd
- 17:22watch Charmed and then this, Yeah, or like Buffy and then this.
- 17:26I think I think mom mom did get into like Wickan and paganism, just
- 17:30briefly, like the most the most like like bare bones ideas of it.
- 17:36So it was all over the place in our household. So yeah, this
- 17:38was this was how that transition happened, where she was like, well,
- 17:42doctor Quinn's kind of winding down. In terms of plot interest, Charmed is
- 17:48picking up. Let's go for some wicked shit I'm really thinking about this Wyatt
- 17:56character. Let's go on paganism time line wise that does that does track?
- 18:00Yeah anyway, So so it starts off this episode, everybody's in church and
- 18:10they're bored to tears thanks to this like handsome wet rag that is the reference.
- 18:18He looks like if you shoved him slightly, he would fucking die.
- 18:25And he basically does roll over like a bitch for this one. Like he
- 18:30walks in a woman, he's wrapping it up. He's like, okay,
- 18:33I have a good Sunday everyone, and then a woman comes in, a
- 18:36mysterious woman comes in and says, hey, everybody, we need to sing
- 18:38at him right now. And he's like, oh okay, and then everybody
- 18:42sings that old time religion. We're all having a good time and great good
- 18:47times, great oldies. And then she everyone goes, oh, yeah,
- 18:49that's that lady who's like running the cart that does the street revival outside of
- 18:55town. And she does the speaking in tone, she does the she didn't
- 19:00literally speaking tongues, but she puts on the whole carnival barker stick. She
- 19:06brings up Horace, who I guess is the town's local idiot, like both
- 19:11of these episodes revolve around Horace fucking stuff up for everybody who has gout and
- 19:15claims to like heal his gout with the the teachings of the Lord Very was
- 19:22it Jerry Fallwell stuff that, like Televangelist did really heavily in the eighties and
- 19:26nineties. She practically does a soft shoe routine up there. Yeah, and
- 19:32that's that's the main plot. There are there are three different plots to this
- 19:37episode. Yeah, it's too long. That's it could have been ended in
- 19:40a twenty minute snippet. That is plot A. Okay, that is plot
- 19:45A, which is that Okay, there's a faith healer in town and doctor
- 19:52Mike is getting pissed off, Like there's a good little showdown between the two
- 19:56of them. Where do you slightly love that they call her doctor Mike.
- 20:00Yeah, I was like, get it, doctor Mike, and that towards
- 20:03the end they're like, and I know we're going to the next episode,
- 20:06and then they call her michaela And I'm like, nah, go back to
- 20:07doctor Mike. That's that shit, that's that's the best. Doctor Mike sounds
- 20:12like a mildly sketchy YouTuber where he's like, doctor Mike, I'm gonna give
- 20:18you some tips on how to stay healthy, also by my vitamin supplements.
- 20:25We've had a fake YouTube doctor on the show before. Doctor Doctor Nerd Love
- 20:30is not actually a doctor. He no, I made that mistake of asking
- 20:33if he was a doctor, and he was very firm on doctor Nerd Love
- 20:37is not a doctor. I think doctor Quinn has the PhD. In serving
- 20:42sas in this episode is all I'm gonna say. She's fucking bad, Like
- 20:47she's great this this little stand down. They first meet and doctor Mike says,
- 20:52you know, I'm the town's local doctor, and Sister Ruth McKenzie goes,
- 20:56oh, it's always nice to meet another healer, and doctor Mike gives
- 21:00her this bitch look. Well, okay, I'm gonna push back on that
- 21:04all because doctor doctor Quinn does do some exceptional side dyeing at this lady.
- 21:10But then also the lady does whatever the fuck she wants where it threw out.
- 21:15She's like, I'm gonna completely fuck up everything in Doctor Quinn is like,
- 21:18m you're a real like just be like, oh, yeah, that's
- 21:22that's so great of you, thank you so much for helping out. But
- 21:25then like doesn't do anything as this lady just runs rough shot all over her.
- 21:30She does have the great line though, of the like I'm not your
- 21:33sister, like she gets like doctor Quinn is serving that she gets there eventually.
- 21:41But what has to happen for that for her to get there is that
- 21:45sister Ruth has to almost kill a child. Oh yeah, yeah, but
- 21:51before then, doctor Mike is just kind of like crossing her arms and doing
- 21:55the like Marge Simpson, ah noise, just kind of like getting irritated.
- 22:00And then a couple of scenes later, a child is like having an asthma
- 22:04attack. Child is exphyxiating on the table and doctor Quinn is helping her and
- 22:11says, wait a minute, what is going on? We were keeping her
- 22:15her asthma under control. And somebody tells doctor Quinn that doctor Ruth, Sister
- 22:22Ruth took a hat to like the immigrant caravan outside of town where all these
- 22:26Swedes who barely speak English are and passed around a hat and told them they
- 22:33don't need their medicine anymore and stole everyone's medicine from the immigrant camp, not
- 22:37just this little girl. But yeah, so there's a fourteen year old girl
- 22:41who is dying of asthma, a very treatable illness, and so so that
- 22:48and that is what is required for doctor Mike to get to a level of
- 22:52SaaS where she's like visibly angry. That's plot A. Yeah. Plot B
- 23:00is that Johnny Cash is in town. He's the bounty hunter kid Cole and
- 23:06she and he rustled up some horse thieves and he shot one of them.
- 23:10And so doctor Mike has to check out the guy that he's shot so that
- 23:15he can live, so he can collect the bounty. But his brothers are
- 23:18coming into town to get him back. This sounds interesting, it's not.
- 23:22It's it's not interesting at all. And then plot number three. Plot number
- 23:30three is that we get a very I like this scene. Early on,
- 23:33there's a sweet scene of a man named named Robert E. And I do
- 23:38want to just pause here. I want to make it clear. Roberty is
- 23:41a black man. His character is that he's a former slave. I'm sure
- 23:45they explained this before. Why the fuck is he named robert E? And
- 23:52everyone refers to him? Last week we talked about a car named the General
- 23:56Lee. This is a man who is a former slave. I'm sure they
- 24:00explain it in the episode. But I just gotta say and and nobody calls
- 24:03him Bob, nobody calls him Robert just they always say Robert E all the
- 24:07time. It's really weird. I it took me a set when I was
- 24:14reading the Wikipedia summaries. I literally at one point I was like, apparently
- 24:18Robert E. Lee was a character on this show for a couple of seasons.
- 24:23It took me a sect to even registered it is the possible name of
- 24:26a black man. Is his name actually Robert E. Lee? Is that
- 24:30his last name? I just kept seeing Roberty and it was like, Roberty
- 24:36enters a boxing match, robert E has this interpersonal drama with somebody, and
- 24:40I was like, apparently he was running around causing a bunch of shit and
- 24:45Dacota this time. So yeah. So robert E, who is a former
- 24:48slave, now lives in Colorado. He proposes to his girlfriend, Grace,
- 24:52who runs the local cafe. So and it's a sweet moment, like he
- 24:56puts the ring in the water. I liked this scene. I was on
- 25:00board for Roberty. So robert E and Grace are getting married, and they
- 25:06want to get married in the town church, which causes a problem because because
- 25:12they're black. Yeah, And there's a moment where the reverend cup. They
- 25:17invite the reverend into their restaurant, and the reverend goes, hey, great,
- 25:21I can't. I'm happy you're getting married. Where do you want to
- 25:22get married outside in the rain? How about how about over in like the
- 25:27town shack? How about over there? What if you get married in the
- 25:32woods. It would be pretty cool if we did it very far away from
- 25:34any human eyes. I would love to marry you, guys and so and
- 25:41that is plot three plot see you going on, Mickey. The doctor Mike
- 25:47is running around and she is like, not only do I have to convince
- 25:51this pastor to let my friends get married in a church, but also now
- 25:55I have to go, like deal with this sister lady who's now telling people
- 25:59they don't need their medicine. It's the whole plot of this thing. It's
- 26:02doctor Mike is the only one who's like, the fuck is happening in this
- 26:06town? And I've got and I've got this asshole, this bounty hunter asshole
- 26:10who is yet who is clearly dying. He's clearly dying of consumption and he
- 26:15wants to die, and he's coughing up blood all the time. But she
- 26:18but he won't, like he won't like let her treat him, not because
- 26:22of sexism, but because he's just an asshole. No, because he's like,
- 26:26I want to die. I'm this is a weird form of suicide.
- 26:30Like he's like, I don't. Yeah, yeah, this episode is very
- 26:34weird. It's like super like each one of these plots should have just bend
- 26:37their own episode, and it's like they just crammed them all together and made
- 26:42it like the most frantic yet slow episode I've ever seen. Yeah, and
- 26:48doctor Mike running around helping all these people is also kind of mixed in with
- 26:53doctor Mike fucking hates all of these people's guts. She is so absolutely from
- 26:59like Sean one. She is sick of all of these people's bullshit. She
- 27:03doesn't come in and be like, hey, what's going on? Oh I
- 27:06can't wait to be like I'm happy, but later I'm going to be disappointed
- 27:10with your actions. She walks into like the first scene like what did you
- 27:14fucking do? Now, you fucking idiot. It reminds me of the latter
- 27:18seasons of Parks and rec The later season of Parks and Reck when just like
- 27:22Leslie's just so mad at this town of Pawnee. If she still keeps trying
- 27:26to help everyone in Bonnie, she's Leslie and nopen this shit up half the
- 27:30time. That is that very good? He's like, what the fuck?
- 27:34Anyway, I have to go over here now anyway, I haven't written here
- 27:38in my notes. Uh. Doctor Quinn is having a very frustrating day to
- 27:45dial in on one specific plot when when Roberty and his girlfriend asked to be
- 27:49married in the church, the reverend's answer why he can't do it. He's
- 27:53like, listen, I would love to marry you in the church. I
- 27:56think it's great. All the principal cast thinks you're great. One problem,
- 28:00everybody hears racist as shit, So we can't do that. And like they
- 28:06get into a whole argument of like, well, you have a moral obligation
- 28:08to do it. It's the right thing you need to do, and he's
- 28:11like, agreed, but racist everybody here is so like basically dialing and very
- 28:18clearly like just to be clear, this place fucking sucks. Yeah, I
- 28:21mean the whole show is like everyone fucking sucks in this town. Like that's
- 28:25the whole show. Yeah, it's in every episode. So this town sucks.
- 28:29Yeah, I think I think now as a good as good a time
- 28:32as any to talk about Sully. Can we talk about my God? Everything
- 28:37about this character is so ridiculous. Mom was obsessed with Sully. Can I
- 28:45Can I read you guys? Something I found about Sully. I was on
- 28:49the Wikipedia page for the first episode, and the Wikipedia not the fandom dot
- 28:55net page for the first episode. Um, Sully is a crucive Yeah,
- 29:00let me do it again. Sully is a reclusive loaner who befriended the neighboring
- 29:04Cheyenne and adopted their ways following the death of his wife and daughter during childbirth
- 29:10in eighteen sixty five parentheses. He is also a sensitive hunk who throws a
- 29:15mean tomahawk. So somebody's mom wilded on Wikipedia and stuck it through. So
- 29:26many moms were horny for the character of Sully. So Sully is. He's
- 29:33played by an actor named Joe Lando, and Joe Lando clearly thought he was
- 29:37going to have a bigger career than he had. And everything about this character
- 29:44is so ridiculous. He's a mountain man. He's basically like Dances with Wolves
- 29:48was really popular when this show started and last of the Mohicans. So he's
- 29:52a white man who's spent enough time among the natives that he has adopted their
- 29:59ways. Yeah. Yeah, And so he's always wearing loin cloths and leathers
- 30:03and spray tanning. He's got long, wavy, fabio hair, and so
- 30:07it's it's sort of that like he does. He basically plays the role that
- 30:14any native character would play if you had a Native character, but he's white,
- 30:18so it's non threatening. Hold on, we this is a jump skip.
- 30:22My friend and I were like just really upset about the solely characters.
- 30:26We watched another episode to see if we could find any other like accurate representation,
- 30:30and we found an episode and the person who is indigenous or is supposed
- 30:36to represent um the tribe, they have no lines. They just sit and
- 30:41stare in this episode. Lines I somebody kept popping up on the Wikipedia.
- 30:48Cloud Dancer is there's a guy named cloud Dancer that comes up a lot Perhatuh.
- 30:59He from what I can tell, he's like evil Sully, which isn't
- 31:03great. Okay, then maybe not this person. I don't know, but
- 31:07all they did was we were just like, really, okay, great,
- 31:11So Sully and so many moms, ours included, lost their shit for Sully.
- 31:19I did some background research, and Sully's not in season six a little
- 31:23bit that he was. He was on some con the actor was in some
- 31:27contract negotiations, so they had Sully off the screen going on like a secret
- 31:33mission for the government or something, and replaced him with a town sheriff who
- 31:38is notwere near as interesting or handsome as Sully. But at this time,
- 31:45like when when rumors of the show being canceled, the fan groups called themselves
- 31:49save our Sully, not save our show. Given up on the show.
- 31:53At this point, they just wanted more Sully and to be To be honest,
- 31:57I think I get it, because you know, cultural appropriation aside.
- 32:02You put that aside. As far as I can tell, Sully's only role
- 32:07on this show is to be a stupid hunk of beefcake who says yeah after
- 32:14everything that doctor Mike says. That's that's kind of as role. And I
- 32:19get it, all right, Women of the nineties, I understand why this
- 32:21is what you wanted. I ask for more, ask for more, Women
- 32:25of the nineties. An alternate theory for Mickey's naming is maybe your mom was
- 32:30like listen, it's too late for me to end up with a hunky white
- 32:34guy who caused plays his Native Americans. But you, my daughter, you
- 32:37can do it. There's still time. And then she has a lesbian for
- 32:40a daughter, so didn't pan out. No, she did not read the
- 32:51room effectively, more like she didn't read the womb effectively. Hey, uh
- 33:01well we're punning hard tonight. Uh all right, I'm gonna skip around through
- 33:08this ship. But what I want to get at here is all these all
- 33:10these things are coming to a head. Kid. Cole is flirting with sister
- 33:15Ruth in a very weird way, like sister Ruth is coming on to him
- 33:21heavily, and it is gross. Yeah, making explain that face you're making
- 33:27the fact that I guess I didn't catch that. And then when you were
- 33:30like, oh they were flirting, did you? I was like, oh
- 33:35yeah, what I mean? Like she she She culminates the episode by being
- 33:38like, don't fight these men. I love you, you old goat.
- 33:43And God, what wouldn't it been great if he had fucking died just then?
- 33:46It would have been great if like after after he finally is like,
- 33:51yes, please treat me. I want to live I've forgiven myself for my
- 33:54sins and that's that's part of their whole thing is like, uh, they
- 33:59clearly like each other. Sister Ruth keeps saying, you can please, we
- 34:04can get That's fine, Yes, that's on. I've watched this episode like
- 34:08two or three times now. Uh. We were supposed to do this episode
- 34:13months ago and then Mickey got got sick and so we had to delay it.
- 34:16So I've watched this episode like two or three times now. And it
- 34:19took three times to catch a lot of this because it's so fucking benign and
- 34:23like boring and beige. It's just the color beige for forty five minutes.
- 34:29But anyway, never Johnny Cash did a monologue about how he is a how
- 34:34he is a huge piece of shit that deserves to die. I just want
- 34:37to be like, can you do you have any examples of stuff you've done?
- 34:39Maybe before I become sympathetic to you. He shot a man that didn't
- 34:45have no gun, Dan, he shot a man that didn't have no gun.
- 34:50He says it four or five times, and eventually eventually it's Sully who's
- 34:54like, hey, man, did you did you know he didn't have a
- 34:58gun? And Johnny Cash like, no, then I feel like you.
- 35:04It's a gray area. Many shot a kid monologue from die Hard. There's
- 35:14only one thing they teach they don't teach you in the academy, and that's
- 35:17how to live with a mistake. How to live with a mistake. We
- 35:25referenced that monologue from die Hard at least once a season anyway. So Johnny
- 35:30Cash so that that's what's going on with them. Meanwhile, also at one
- 35:37point in time, everything kind of comes to a head as everyone meets up
- 35:39at Sister Ruth's revival meeting. Doctor Quinn goes to check out and be like,
- 35:45okay, what's going on here? Like everyone's getting there and everybody's cheering
- 35:49and clapping and say they and hallowly to the Lord. Most notably black people
- 35:54are there. Robberty. Roberty and Grace are both there because they're welcome at
- 36:00this church. They're allowed to be here at this church, and so it's
- 36:04appealing to everybody. Doctor Quinn is there, The Reverend is also there to
- 36:08take a look at what's going on. And Kid Cole shows up even though
- 36:14there are men there who are also trying to kill him, and there's a
- 36:16kind of a funny bit where the men who are there to kill Kid Cole
- 36:21show up and Sister Ruth shoves them down. It's like, okay, take
- 36:23your seats, we're starting the church meeting. I thought that was kind of
- 36:27funny. Whatever. Sister Ruth performs another miracle. She pulls up an old
- 36:34man who is deaf in one ear, deafen his left ear, and says,
- 36:37Okay, by the power of the Lord, you are healed, and
- 36:40he goes, ah, nope, nope, I still can't hear shit.
- 36:45They can't hear anything out of this ear. Then you need to believe harder.
- 36:50No, I'm believing pretty hard. I've always believed in God and I
- 36:52still can't hear out of this ear. It's very funny. And then she
- 36:55says, well, that means there's someone among us who does not believe in
- 36:59the or of the Lord to heal. And the old man just turns and
- 37:02narcs immediately he's a turn about. Oh yeah, that's doctor Mike. Oh
- 37:06yeah. And then they cast So Sister Ruth is pulling both the Santa Claus
- 37:10and the tinker Bell effect. Yeah, it's like the end of Elf,
- 37:15where it's like the Dad's not singing the song? Yeah she again, she
- 37:21is not. She does not turn out to be evil. At the end,
- 37:24they're like, thank you crazy preacher lady, which, like they set
- 37:29it up so much, so I have to ask this question, do we
- 37:35think that Sister Ruth actually heals Horace's gout and the old man's hearing problem?
- 37:43Do we think that she actually heals him? More importantly, does the show
- 37:47seem think that she actually does this? Because Horace doesn't start limping again and
- 37:52that old man doesn't like get his like hearing it out again, So,
- 37:57like I does the show the show seems to actually believe that she can do
- 38:01this? Do we believe this? It feels like halfway through like they were
- 38:07in the process of filming this episode and then somebody from the studio showed up
- 38:10and be like, you do realize that the people that watch this show totally
- 38:15believe in faith healing? Right? You realize you can't really do a faith
- 38:19healing is bullshit episode? You're pissing in our demographics mouths, so bail on
- 38:24it, and doctor and Mike in the middle of it, it's like,
- 38:29what about all these other beliefs? Right? And so, like faith healing
- 38:32is something that's amongst a lot of cultures, and she does say like,
- 38:37let's you know, She's like, what about if you don't believe in this
- 38:40or you don't do that? But like, I feel like the show took
- 38:44a hard turn right at this point where it's like you need both, yeah,
- 38:47have faith and science and like let's appeal to everyone, which is like
- 38:52how I think those shows at that time. It's a show that's like we
- 38:57really can't take a stand on one thing or another, so we're just gonna
- 39:00say yes. It's so weird they sound like they're taking a stand like in
- 39:05that in that question when uh, doctor Quinn calls around and says, hey,
- 39:08guess what we got, Like we have the Cheyenne, they don't believe
- 39:13in your God. Yeah, we have a lot of people there who who
- 39:16are this who heals them? And then Sister Ruth kind of says, well
- 39:21you do. And it's the same bullshit Like if you've ever like done like
- 39:24a sixth grade, have you ever spoken like a critical sixth grade or at
- 39:29a youth group, This stuff happens all the fucking time, Like, Oh,
- 39:32the the Lord healed your cancer. Know, the doctor healed my cancer.
- 39:37Oh but the Lord gave the doctor the ability. It's such a boring,
- 39:42stupid like rhetoric. It's it's using the test to verify its own results.
- 39:49And at that point you're just like, it's it's done, It's done.
- 39:52And this all culminates in this episode um when kid Cole gets punched in
- 39:57the chest during the like one and only kind of fight in this episode,
- 40:01he gets punched in the chest and he's bleeding out the mouth. Sister and
- 40:07doctor Mike has to inject him with like a needle and pull some blood out
- 40:13out of his lungs. You're you're both looking at me like I'm the only
- 40:15person who watched this episode. I might as well. Yeah, yeah,
- 40:19I'm completely I'm wrapped. Tell me what happened next, Marty. So he's
- 40:28dying, He's dying on the table and doctor quinn is is operating on him,
- 40:35pulling blood out of his lungs, pulling a needle in there, and
- 40:37sister Ruth shows up and it's like you need to live, you got something
- 40:42to live for a live for me, You're dummy or something like this,
- 40:45and then doctor Quinn completely out of character, is just like I need you
- 40:50to pray. So Sister Ruth is sitting there praying to the Lord to guide
- 40:58doctor Quinn's hand, and doctor Quinn does, in fact, like save Johnny
- 41:02Cash's life. It's up for debate. I guess if Sister Ruth actually did
- 41:08anything, but according to the two miracles she already performed, maybe she can
- 41:14according to the show. So I just at this point, at this point
- 41:17in time, like doctor Quinn should be losing her mind, she should be
- 41:22shaving her head and contemplating suicide because everything she thinks about should be thrown into
- 41:28complete question, Like everything about her entire existence is questioned right now. I
- 41:35mean, but does she heal them? Like the guy still can't hear,
- 41:37and like what was it gout? Like it could just be the medicine that
- 41:42Doctor Quinn. And maybe that's like the show wants you to think, because
- 41:45that's it. That's my point is that like the old man does say,
- 41:50oh look I can hear, and Horace does say, oh look I can
- 41:53walk, and they never go back. Remember, Sister Ruth is never shown
- 41:59to be wrong, And I feel like I feel like doctor Quinn's internal monologue
- 42:07is her going like, oh, I'm learning the importance of the placebo effect,
- 42:10like she's like, Oh, these people are so fucking stupid that if
- 42:14they think they don't have gout anymore, it kind of happens. She knows
- 42:19about that from the beginning though, she straight up says to Horace, like,
- 42:22Horace, sometimes people get carried away and forget that they're sick, but
- 42:25you'll remember later. And he never does. He never remembers later, which
- 42:31means that, according to the show, he's healed. Yeah. Also,
- 42:37the last part of my notes, it just says, what the fuck's that's
- 42:40how this show ends with my notes. Also, also at some point in
- 42:44time here, like doctor Quinn should probably be questioning her faith entirely because oh
- 42:50this because also remember this show does straight up say that even organized religion is
- 42:54there to uphold white supremacy of structural racism. That's a huge chunk. Like
- 43:00even the quote unquote good reverend who is doing it right, is like being
- 43:05crazy racist right in front of doctor Quinn's face. So at this point,
- 43:09like doctor, I used to write reviews of movies, and I got to
- 43:15a point where like I had to do a lot of Christian movies because I
- 43:17get stuck with that shit beat and I refused to do it because I was
- 43:20like, I was just writing the same review over and over and over again.
- 43:24And the reason why those those movies are boring is because when you're making
- 43:29stuff for Christian for a Christian audience, you can't really show your main character
- 43:35questioning their faith at any time, despite the overwhelming evidence that they should be.
- 43:40Right halfway through this, halfway through this, like the point that doctor
- 43:46Mike should come up with this, Oh shit, all religion is bad and
- 43:51bullshit. Okay again, remind you she killed she nearly killed a child.
- 43:55Sister Ruth almost kills a child. I have a brief aside. Do either
- 44:01of you guys know anybody that's ever been faith healed? Not? I'm sure
- 44:07we know people, but no one's admitted it to us, do you man?
- 44:10Yeah? My so, my grandma was faith healed by a guy who
- 44:15whose credentials as a faith healer was keeps getting struck by lightning. It was
- 44:21like, I've been stripped by lightning like five times and I'm still alive.
- 44:25So Andy like did a faith healing on her, and her like hand tremors
- 44:30that she wouldn't stop complaining about went away, and we were all just kind
- 44:36of like, we're just not even gonna fucking like talk about it because she
- 44:38won't shut up about it. But if we questioned it in any way,
- 44:42the fucking hand tremors are gonna come back. So we were all just like,
- 44:45yeah, you got faith healed. Good job, lightning man, you
- 44:50did it. So I guess placebo effects go a long fucking way. Cool.
- 44:59Yeah, bonus episode. That's that's Patreon shit. Just a weird thing.
- 45:05Mostly, the thing that I've always stuck on is the guy's qualifications as
- 45:08a faith healer. Was I keep getting struck by lightning? I mean valid,
- 45:14Like, who just keeps getting struck by lightning? Something is up with
- 45:17that? It was like five times. I don't know why. I don't
- 45:21know who. He just loves hanging out in fields. Yeah, more than
- 45:24once. I have to stop wearing my hat with a giant antenna on it.
- 45:32Nobody even buy me this hat. Nobody in his church had the question.
- 45:37I'm like, well, if there is a god, maybe you're like
- 45:39a super bad person. Yeah, being struck by lightning is like the number
- 45:45one sign that you're fucking up. Yeah, it's like God's whole thing since
- 45:52ancient times to spin this. That's God giving you a very subtle hint.
- 46:00He's like the definition of like when life gives you lemonade. It's like,
- 46:06you know what, if I'm gonna keep getting struck by lightning, I'm gonna
- 46:08make a commodity. Yeah. Around the third lightning strike, he's like,
- 46:13I don't see this going away, so I'm gonna get my money out.
- 46:16Yep. Fun fact about lightning. When you get struck by lightning, the
- 46:21sweat in your in your body explodes and turns to steam and blows all your
- 46:24clothes off. That's like a it's it's a recurring fact that people who are
- 46:30started by lightning wake up in fucking fields completely bare ass naked, like terminating
- 46:37exactly exactly, So what that guy's qualification is? Just like, I've been
- 46:43naked in so many fields. I've been bare ass naked. Let me heal
- 46:46your grandma, Like I have additional questions, like if a guy can out
- 46:52you, was like, I have been struck by lightning five times, I'm
- 46:54here to heal you. My first question would be like what, where and
- 46:59when? Like I need I need to know. Okay, thank you for
- 47:01your qualifications. Let's stay deeper. Yeah, where was the school of getting
- 47:07struck by lightning? Please? Can you get as far away from me as
- 47:12possible, especially if you're outside, I would just start sprinting in the opposite
- 47:19direction. Cool man, Let me just take all of my small electronic devices
- 47:23and move them over here to the other side of the table. All right,
- 47:30man, cool hey, can you can you be a favor and just
- 47:34go walk past that microwave for me? My burrito is not quite warm enough.
- 47:38He gets near a Geiger counter and it starts going fucking berserk. There
- 47:44we go. We made me pulled something out of that. It sounded like
- 47:50that wasn't going anywhere, but we got something from it. Yeah, content
- 47:54those moments. It was one of those moments where like, you were telling
- 47:58me something and I was like kind of listening, and then I went back
- 48:00to it and I was like, wait, he was struck five times by
- 48:04lightning. Let's just edit out the long silence where you guys were like,
- 48:08why did you tell me that? And then I had to be like the
- 48:10lightning thing, guys, the lightning thing. Hold in on that. Okay.
- 48:15It was it was just I really want to get to this next episode.
- 48:17Okay, yeah, yeah, let's let's let's let's keep let's get back
- 48:22on my sister's being podcast dad this time. Yeah, yeah, that's cute.
- 48:27Okay, So this all fucking like comes to a head after Doctor Quinn
- 48:32saves Johnny Cash and then he's about to like walk this horse thief back kind
- 48:39of like it's three He's gonna walk the line exactly. Also, can I
- 48:45can I just go ahead and say I know that this is he's he's acting
- 48:49as a and they're all personas, but like, it's it's a bitch move
- 48:52to watch Johnny Cash, who wrote the lines I shot him man in Reno,
- 48:57just to watch him die just sit there and go, oh no,
- 49:00shure man, that doesn't have any going And I realize it's all bullshit.
- 49:04I realize it's all persona and all acting. But it's just I fuck this,
- 49:07especially because I think at the end of this episode he lets the guy
- 49:10go Yeah, he like he like, I don't understand fully what happens here.
- 49:15I thought it was like a three ten to Yuma situation where he like
- 49:17had to drag the man onto the stagecoach to go to the prison or whatever.
- 49:22But he just kind of like, Okay, that bullet in your arm
- 49:25is punishment enough? You keep on the straight and narrow path and goodbye.
- 49:30And then he goes off, and I'm just like, motherfucker, there's still
- 49:32a bounty on his head. Just another guy's gonna go get him now,
- 49:36like you just you just wounded him and left him and left him to the
- 49:39wolves, you idiot. Do you think he's in like two more episodes?
- 49:43Do you think after this he's just like an accountant? Yeah, right,
- 49:46Like it doesn't make any sense. He should have died. He should have
- 49:52died in this. Oh there there is. As he's walking the guy out,
- 49:58the guy's brothers come to him and they have a showdown in the middle
- 50:01of the town and they're like, put down that gun, kid, Cole,
- 50:06We're here to get you. And then from a fucking balcony nearby,
- 50:12like somebody kicks open the door and it's doctor Quinn's oldest son and it's Sully,
- 50:16and doctor Quinn's son has a shotgun and Sully has a bow and arrow.
- 50:22Just so cardcam ridiculous. And then other people show up, like the
- 50:28doctor, another guy has a gun, the like proprietor of the saloon who's
- 50:31like a heathen who also is a pimp. I think he might be,
- 50:36Like, there are prostitutes in this show. They're never said as such,
- 50:39but like yeah, I mean they kind of say it's a brothel, and
- 50:45the guy that runs the brothel comes out, and so everybody in the town
- 50:49is just like, fuck this guy. And that happens. So there we
- 50:52go. H culminates. Also, the reverend goes, oh, I've been
- 50:58a huge racist piece of shit. Of course he can give be married in
- 51:00our church, and no one raises any objections to this, Like it ends
- 51:04with them getting married and everybody seems fine, which makes me wonder, hey,
- 51:08reverend, there's the actually a problem with the congregation because it because nobody,
- 51:16nobody seems to be that upset about this. Maybe maybe he never asked
- 51:23them about it. He was like, just listen, just based off of
- 51:25geography, I'm assuming all these people are racist as shit. I don't.
- 51:30I don't really, I haven't had a conversation about it, because like I
- 51:34don't want it to get weird. But you know, I'm picking. I'm
- 51:37just going off of data. Why would I ever talk to these people.
- 51:40I'm only their faith leader. I mean, he was a pretty terrible one
- 51:45to begin with, we've already a true and the first scene, everyone's like,
- 51:49this fucking guy, shut up, it's a dog shit priest. There
- 51:54we go. And then yeah, like at the beginning of this episode,
- 51:58I said, and then McKay actor Quinn's like, I've learned that today that
- 52:01faith and science can co exist, faith and healing can co exist. And
- 52:06I kind of go, is that what you learned? All right? If
- 52:10that's what you want to take from this, If this is the show Mom
- 52:15watch that originated my name, I have questions like with Mom, and you
- 52:24know what I think. I feel like Mom's just like I really want my
- 52:28daughter to run around and have a terrible day. I want her to be
- 52:35the only person that's trying to tell people accurate things and nobody lets its turn.
- 52:40That's all I want for my daughter. Should have named your Cassandra.
- 52:45This girl was going to suffer a lot of fools in her life. You
- 52:52know what? That one goes, all right, So now we're gonna go
- 52:54on to season six. We don't have a rating for this. We all
- 52:59just could that this episode sucks both episodes. Sure, at the ending of
- 53:06the next one, yes, all right, So now we're on season six,
- 53:09episode eighteen, Birdman Michael Keaton is nowhere to be found heartbreaking. Neither
- 53:17is Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. Originally airs April eighteenth, nineteen ninety
- 53:22eight, directed by Bethany Rooney. See if Bethany Rooney has done anything else
- 53:29of note, I should have nothing, just a bunch of TV shows Ncis
- 53:35Castle, Melrose Place. Gilmore has just just directed a bunch of TV show
- 53:38episodes. Also shows Mom Loved I'll do the one sentence summary from Wikipedia.
- 53:47Doctor Mike grapples with her fear for brian safety when he befriends a seemingly harmless
- 53:52but eccentric fellow who thinks he's a bird. All right, So now it's
- 53:57April eighteenth, nineteen ninety eight. Brian is Doctor Quinn's youngest son, who
- 54:01is like twelve at this point, and this is the last season of the
- 54:07show. They are running out of ideas. They probably already know they've been
- 54:12canceled. Their heart throb Sully is nowhere to be seen. Like I said
- 54:15before, he's on a secret mission for the government. And there's a much
- 54:19less interesting, handsome like sheriff in town who's oh the Eastwood knockoff. Yeah,
- 54:24yeah, that guy, the actor who plays Sully. It feels like
- 54:29he narrowly avoided doing porn, like like it was this role was his last
- 54:36shot to not end up doing porn in la he did. He did the
- 54:39other thing you do when you're just above doing porn, which is soap operas.
- 54:45He was a soap opera actor on like Guiding Light in like General Hospital
- 54:49forever and as far as I can tell now, he just doesn't do much.
- 54:52He has reunited with Jane Seymour for not one, but two Hallmark Christmas
- 54:55movies. So that's how everybody's career is going here. Brian and his older
- 55:01brother are out in the woods talking about Brian's science project that he's got to
- 55:07do for science. So yeah, man, Also, were you allowed to
- 55:19be creative at that time? So so Brian is going to eighteen sixty seven
- 55:24Montessori school apparently, where the teacher is saying, yes, children be loud
- 55:31and creative, and we absolutely won't paddle you with this plank. That's not
- 55:37what we do here. Go forth, learn things that aren't related to farm.
- 55:43We totally encourage. I was like, this, get's got a great
- 55:45growth mindset over here like throwing out my teacher terms. Currently, I'm like,
- 55:52what's in there doing some dead poets society shit. So in the very
- 56:02progressive eighteen hundreds, uh school, he's got a science project to do,
- 56:08and the science project was apparently just do a science. It seems like there
- 56:14were no parameters or anything this. So the teachers just like, hey,
- 56:20do science and then come back on Friday. So Brian and his brother are
- 56:24talking about Brian's science project like it's a modern day middle school, let's do
- 56:30on Friday. And there's no poster board in sight. I'm assuming the baking
- 56:36soda volcano hadn't been invented yet, which made this much harder. Wait,
- 56:43no, you can about they had bicarbonate of soda. They had. Those
- 56:47are the two things. They had. Vinegar and they had, but they
- 56:51hadn't realized it could be in a volcano. Marty, but we forgot.
- 56:54His mom is a dog. Every day for him is a science project,
- 57:02and he's over here like what did I do for my science or I don't
- 57:06know, talk to your mom. He can't surgery, he can't bring a
- 57:10guy into the school and then drain the fluid from his lungs. He could
- 57:15be like, this is medicine. I don't know your mom is a scientist.
- 57:21Talk to her. Behold, I left some bread out. Now I
- 57:24have penicillin. Who wants their smallpox cured? Come here? Who wants to
- 57:30touch me? Be real popular with the ladies, right, But no,
- 57:39he's just sitting there, like what if I built a flying machine and he's
- 57:44trying out his kite. It's it's a fucking kite. When a man falls
- 57:49from the sky. Yes, a guy falls from the sky who was attempting
- 57:55to fly in This man's uh so wearing bird he's wearing giant bird wings and
- 58:04uh yeah, there's just an eccentric old man that lives in the forest who
- 58:07thinks that he's a bird. He hurts himself in the flight, so they
- 58:09take him home to talk to their mom, who is, as Mickey pointed
- 58:14out, a doctor. And it's a subtle detail that can get past you.
- 58:16Yeah, I don't know if anyone remembers that she is a doctor.
- 58:21Sometimes we get lost in there and the man's name is Martin Chesterfield and Mickey,
- 58:25I swear to God, I did not know that his name was Martin
- 58:29when I picked this episode. I did not realize that we were doing that.
- 58:36It's it's very prescient that Mikhaila thinks that Martin is a complete dipshit.
- 58:45That motherfucker's talking about birds again. I'm to zone out for a little bit.
- 58:53Okay, cool, No, Marty is just like, we've talked enough
- 58:58about my sister. All back to me. Yeah, you've just described my
- 59:04entire friendship with him. This. Mordy also does the thing where while you're
- 59:07talking, he stares off into the distance and then just starts talking about birds.
- 59:14All right, I'm done shit talking back. Somebody who remembers this episode,
- 59:16go, I'm gonna say this episode actually made me really sad. Yeah,
- 59:21okay, but overall impressions of this episode, well, especially because of
- 59:29like my career and what I do. I was really sad because I was
- 59:34like, oh, I mean, we'll have talk about the ending, but
- 59:36it's like instead of like helping everyone except this person and like helping them understand
- 59:43like uniqueness in our minds and how we might see the world or like I
- 59:46don't know, ask him about trauma or like if anything's going on with him,
- 59:52they're like, you can't be accepted in society. And also I don't
- 59:55want you to go to an institution so be alone own. It hints at
- 1:00:01it, It hints at it every once in a while, like, uh,
- 1:00:06doctor Mike says something like maybe something happened to him out in the woods
- 1:00:09that made him feel this way, or she makes notes of the like scars
- 1:00:15on his wrists from the shackles that they kept him in at the asylum,
- 1:00:19and it's like, guess what, this dude lives in the in the woods
- 1:00:22and nothing has hurt him more than that. So she hints at it a
- 1:00:25couple of times, but nope, but ultimately she doesn't take that that strong
- 1:00:30of us dance for it. She's kind of backed up again. She never
- 1:00:34does Yeah, I didn say. She probably does the best she can.
- 1:00:39Positions of this episode are should we send this guy off to an asylum and
- 1:00:45beat wouldn't it be cool if we had a bird guy? But not even
- 1:00:52like our town. It's like, sorry, Bud, you're still not welcome.
- 1:00:54You're not welcome anywhere. Yeah. Yeah, they don't really try to
- 1:01:00like deal latter jail. Yeah. Also, that guy whoever the protagonist,
- 1:01:07has the most punchable face I've ever seen, and I swear he probably only
- 1:01:13gets typecasted as an asshole because he has a face that anyone would want to
- 1:01:16punch? Which one the one who's uh like? At first I thought he
- 1:01:22was the mayor, but he's not the mayor because then he was like serving
- 1:01:24booze and then he was a barber. Like I don't really know what this
- 1:01:29guy does, but his same as Jake, and he's terrible. He's the
- 1:01:34definition of who asked you? So I think I think I think Jake Jake
- 1:01:37is. He does referred himself as the mayor. He says he's like has
- 1:01:40problems with like the mayor of the town. Um, I pulled up Jake.
- 1:01:44Yes, most punchable face I am now remember I do want to punch
- 1:01:46my computer screen right now. There's one of him dressed as a woman,
- 1:01:51which I am curious what that episode is. Jake Jake is I guess the
- 1:01:54antagonist of the later episodes or whatever. But yeah, he is the mayor
- 1:02:00of the town. But he's also a barber. I guess he's got He's
- 1:02:06got a lot of jobs. Jake's got a lot of stuff going on.
- 1:02:08This episode also introduces a rich man whose name I think is Pruitt. He's
- 1:02:13like a fancy well to do guy who recognizes Martin after doctor Quinn takes him
- 1:02:19in and gives him a shower and a shave and a haircut, recognizes him
- 1:02:22and goes, wait a minute, we've met before. You're from like a
- 1:02:24really ritzy, well to do family in New York. I'm going to call
- 1:02:29them, and so they telegraph. They telegraph the NYPD and this like long
- 1:02:34Island, uh, like sophisticates family, And that's how they piece together that
- 1:02:39the Birdman, whose name is Martin the birdman um is a asylum escapee and
- 1:02:49also from a rich, wealthy family who I think would probably just find to
- 1:02:53lock this dude up and do like a Jane Ayre situation. And to be
- 1:03:00honest, the town of Colorado Springs is treating him about the same. But
- 1:03:05yeah, over the course of a couple of days, doctor Mike is getting
- 1:03:09him a little closer to being not rehabilitated, but socialized. There's a moment
- 1:03:17where he starts to like peck at his food and she's like, hey,
- 1:03:22you're part bird part man, right maybe be a little bit more part man
- 1:03:27right now, And he goes, oh, yeah, okay. Sure.
- 1:03:30They know he wants a community and he wants a family, and he's keeps
- 1:03:36fighting family among the birds because that keeps him the safest, and she's being
- 1:03:40his family. And then at the end it's like fuck you. The town
- 1:03:45acts like this guy who thinks he's a bird is the most dangerous thing ever
- 1:03:50where. They're like, like they it's not like he thinks he's a bear.
- 1:03:53He just thinks he's a bird. And they act like he came in
- 1:03:57with an ak forty seven strett to each arm. They're terrified at the fact
- 1:04:00that heat. Like, Okay, this guy is vegan pretty much. He
- 1:04:04won't eat eggs or meat, and they're like, how dare he protect these
- 1:04:09eggs? Like he's just vegan. Yeah, he's like he's like holding the
- 1:04:15eggs and like, how dare we eat? He's like, oh, the
- 1:04:17audacity, do not eat chicken eggs? How dare he does? He wakes
- 1:04:21them up in the morning by like perching up and whistling from the uh from
- 1:04:27the perch, which, just to be clear, in bird language, he's
- 1:04:30up there going sex sex sax sex like saz sax pretty sacks. But no,
- 1:04:35okay, whatever, we'll put that aside. He's a very just a
- 1:04:40simple roof pervert. Every Compare these two episodes, though, Compare the belief
- 1:04:49system of these two fucking episodes, because both of these episodes are another person
- 1:04:55coming to town, are about delusional people coming to town. Right, is
- 1:05:00this guy thinks he's a he's part bird? Uh? Any more any stranger
- 1:05:04than this woman thinks that she can heal people with God. Those two things
- 1:05:10should be treated equally. Hell, if anything, there's more evidence to the
- 1:05:15idea that Martin is part bird because he does accurately predict the wind patterns of
- 1:05:20the town like he's using science. Yeah, and Sister Ruth is a more
- 1:05:29pressing danger because she's confiscating people's medicine. He just really likes feathers. She
- 1:05:34almost actually killed someone, Yes, a child. We cannot emphasize enough,
- 1:05:41but she nearly kills a child with a He just wants to not eat eggs
- 1:05:45and build a enough. He could not be less of an issue like he's
- 1:05:50You could just he could just be around and it would be a science teacher.
- 1:05:56Actually, yes, parameter, that's that's the other part of this,
- 1:06:01by the way, is that uh, he is helping Brian with his science
- 1:06:05project, which is to build a flying machine. And there's there's like another
- 1:06:10this is another thing that talks about like faith in the most strange of it's
- 1:06:15a it's another faith versus science episode or faith in science working together episode,
- 1:06:19but it does it in the most strange ass backwards ways essentially, where like
- 1:06:27they're trying to put together this flying machine this kite, uh, and Brian's
- 1:06:32like at some point like maybe I should just give up or whatever. And
- 1:06:38I would say it's more like an airplane, because they do not so much
- 1:06:41a kite. They do make a reference to the Wright Brothers at the end
- 1:06:44for some reason. It's and then it's all about like things don't always work
- 1:06:48out the first time apparently was the motto of that or the message we were
- 1:06:54supposed to receive did not receive that? Yeah, and and and then you
- 1:06:57talk about like the lift problem things like this, and there's a good message
- 1:07:02where Birdman is going I'm just gonna call him Birdman says like scientific endeavors have
- 1:07:09come from failure, keep trying and keep going. But also he never actually
- 1:07:13says like we need to learn from the mistakes. Whatever. Dan, you've
- 1:07:16got something. Dan looks like he's about to die. I before I like
- 1:07:20they mentioned the right brothers. There was a period where I thought his family
- 1:07:25was going to be the right brothers. I thought they were going to do
- 1:07:28that match it twist, were like, the right brothers were going to show
- 1:07:30him be like, come on, dad, come tell us you're crazy stories
- 1:07:33about how a man can fly. Okay, that would have been a better
- 1:07:39ending with him flying off. I think it should have ended with him literally
- 1:07:43flying over the town. That would have been great. I think it should
- 1:07:47have had the ending from the movie Birdman. I think it should have ended
- 1:07:51with him jumping out of window and Emma Stone appears and looks around. I
- 1:07:56thought you meant shooting himself in the face. Yeah, he's he's just such
- 1:08:00not He's not an issue in anyway. At one point, he breaks into
- 1:08:03a building to retrieve his nest, his hair, his hair so he can
- 1:08:09continue building his nest, and people are like, he broke into the barbershop,
- 1:08:14We're all fucked. Also, what a drama queen. He's like,
- 1:08:16he's gonna tie me up and slip bifes are okay, Jake, Yeah,
- 1:08:20still out, buddy. Also, what also, Jake, you talked about
- 1:08:27his gun. I've been contemplating Jake's face. Since you said how punchable it
- 1:08:30was, he looks like a failed attempt to create Benedict Cumberbatch. Yes,
- 1:08:35he it's the minute that he walked onto the screen. I was like,
- 1:08:39I would punch that face. Yeah, he looks evil and that's the only
- 1:08:44reason he has that role. His lines are terrible. He's a terrible actor.
- 1:08:47He just was born with the most punchable His face just looks like every
- 1:08:51in between every single scene he's foreclosing on someone's house. It makes the casting
- 1:08:58director's job so easy when like a guy just walks on set and it's like,
- 1:09:02hey, I'm Steve Williams auditioning for the role. Fuck this guy.
- 1:09:05Fuck yeah, I hate your face. You've got the job. He really
- 1:09:11wanted to be the sheriff, and instead he got Jake. Way through the
- 1:09:15audition, a producer threw a chair at him, just as casting directors just
- 1:09:21like, you've got the job. Get out of my face or I will
- 1:09:25choke you out, just digging his fingernails into the table they're sitting at.
- 1:09:30I hate looking at you so much. You're so perfect. But it also
- 1:09:36means that they didn't he actually hear him read the lines, which explains the
- 1:09:40rest of the fucking performance. Okay, so anyways, this episode, it
- 1:09:46just yeah, and then at the very end, can I just say he
- 1:09:50doesn't even He's like, hold on, let me fix this doctor Quinn's son,
- 1:09:56let me fix your flying machine and your airplane. And all he does
- 1:09:59is hie something to it. He puts a ribbon on it, and then
- 1:10:03it flies like the tail of a kite. And then he just hides behind
- 1:10:14a bush. He disappears, and I was like, oh, he's just
- 1:10:15hiding behind a bush for this family to leave. He's just like, let
- 1:10:18me be a bird. Yeah. You know, you know how all airplanes
- 1:10:21have giant like flags tied to the back. There's a row of flags and
- 1:10:27ribbons behind every single airplane. I just watched the movie Nope last night,
- 1:10:30So minor spoilers here. That's why they don't get eaten by aliens. Yeah,
- 1:10:35so how does it end again? Does he just continue being a birdman?
- 1:10:39Yeah? Goes down the hold on, they lock him up in jail,
- 1:10:45or breaking into the barbershop, which apparently was a threat, even though
- 1:10:47it looks like you can literally knock down every single one of those houses.
- 1:10:50Like I like anyone could just walk in at any time. You just become
- 1:10:57an accidental kool aid man every time you like up over your shoelaces. Yea.
- 1:11:02So he's in there, He's just like I want my hair, and
- 1:11:05Jake's like, you're gonna slip my throat. You have a gun, Jake,
- 1:11:08and you're like ten feet away. He okay, cram down, drama
- 1:11:12queen. Then they just take him to jail. This is the Wild West.
- 1:11:15One of people's top three hobbies is throwing people through windows. This guy
- 1:11:19could not be less dangerous, especially for the time period. So so he's
- 1:11:26in episodes kind of just like, why is this an episode? So he's
- 1:11:30in jail, and we have now put in calls. People in the town
- 1:11:32have put in telegrams to the asylum or to the NYPD and to his family,
- 1:11:40so everyone knows who this guy is and his family are coming to lock
- 1:11:43him away. And doctor Mike is like, Oh, if there was only
- 1:11:47something I could do, maybe I can talk to your doctor and convince you're
- 1:11:51the doctor that's coming from New York and convince them, which she doesn't even
- 1:11:56get a chance to try this. She doesn't even get to try to convince
- 1:11:59the door to release him into like her cousin or whatever. Before she gets
- 1:12:03a chance to do that, the sheriff is just like, hey, hey,
- 1:12:05doctor Quinn's older son. I'm not saying there's a spare key or anything,
- 1:12:12but I'm gonna look the other way for about twenty minutes and that's it.
- 1:12:16They just let him go. They just let him out of jail and
- 1:12:18he returns to the woods and probably dies, like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:24Like that's what I mean. Like instead of being like, hey,
- 1:12:27townspeople, like get your shit together, he's you know she I mean,
- 1:12:31she tries, but like at the same time, like the best option in
- 1:12:35this was see you later. You don't get it anywhere. She ultimately doesn't
- 1:12:41do anything. In the conclusion of the episode, does she Like she says
- 1:12:45that she's going to talk to the doctor, but she doesn't get a chance
- 1:12:47to so ultimately, like doctor Quinn has zero agency or bearing. On the
- 1:12:53end of this episode, doctor Quinn let a man go who needs help and
- 1:12:58support and was just like, send for yourself, go die in the woods.
- 1:13:02Go die in the woods, like dyeing in the woods of starvation.
- 1:13:08Can't It's way less traumatizing than sending you back to the asylum. And that's
- 1:13:12all I got for you. Kid. So later, go out into the
- 1:13:15woods and dress like an animal of prey. Go can't immediately mulled by a
- 1:13:20fucking bear the second year old camera. And then yeah, and then as
- 1:13:28as the plane that they built together flies for a little bit, I mean
- 1:13:32it does eventually come to the grounds. I don't know what their what their
- 1:13:36goal was here, but then we do get a little like there's there's a
- 1:13:41title and James Seymour reads a voiceover that's like two bicycle shop brothers owners named
- 1:13:47the Right Brothers began experimenting with flying machines and they never really worked. But
- 1:13:53if they tried hard enough and stuck with it, now we have airplanes.
- 1:13:57What okay, thanks, I thought, Yeah, this whole episode was not
- 1:14:05about the flying machine. Yeah, no one cares about that. Jane.
- 1:14:11There's a man who thinks he can lay eggs. It should have been like,
- 1:14:18if anyone you know needs help or support, please call Instead it was
- 1:14:25the Right Brothers. They never gave up it. Neither should you. But
- 1:14:29it's a terrible message to send when you spent the past forty five minutes with
- 1:14:32a man who is delusional. When you were talking about human beings who have
- 1:14:40different planes of reality in their brains, you should not tell them to never
- 1:14:44give up. That's the exact opposite message you should say. It's like,
- 1:14:48Okay, this show always starts off really good. It's like James Seymour,
- 1:14:51like doctor Quinn. She's like, I'm on this, I'm a badass.
- 1:14:55Look at me, like I'm really helping him. And then it gets to
- 1:14:58the point where it's like, oh, there's two many men in this town.
- 1:15:00Sorry, I'm out numbered. Feel later, I said my piece,
- 1:15:08and I can't do anything else. Only one doctor here, and I'm a
- 1:15:12woman, so pizza. I feel like that's the overarching thrust of the show
- 1:15:17is just her like one going from scene to scene being like, would everybody
- 1:15:20stop being fucking stupid for five goddamn seconds, and everybody's okay, yeah,
- 1:15:26okay, all right, fuck me, I guess all right bye, And
- 1:15:30then at the end of the situation just almost resolves itself and she's like,
- 1:15:34this is the best I'm in to get. I hope to God that this
- 1:15:38this series ends with like Mike and Sully moving to Los Angeles. Also,
- 1:15:47I just realized that they have the same names as the main characters in Monsters,
- 1:15:51inc. I hope that Mike and Sully, like say, fucked this
- 1:15:57down and moved to La, Like, I mean, doctor Mike is literally
- 1:16:00over here, Like yeah, I don't know. I'm still trying to get
- 1:16:02them to see me as a doctor or like a person. I don't even
- 1:16:05think I can vote good luck with that. I'm trying to teach these people
- 1:16:13what influenza is. So the Birdman is pretty low on my priorities. I
- 1:16:24didn't even take away that. The lesson of this episode is like, all
- 1:16:26right, so if your uncle keeps wearing a fake beak and jerking off on
- 1:16:30the eggs, just release him into the woods. Just call of the wild.
- 1:16:35You're mentally ill, family member, Let them go. Let them go,
- 1:16:44Yeah, let them go into the wood. If they if they don't
- 1:16:47return, they were never yours. Fuck it is your family having a manic
- 1:16:54episode. Just send them into the wood. I like that should be like
- 1:17:03a companion to doctor Phil of just like, listen, we're all overthinking it.
- 1:17:09All of your mental health concerns can be solved by releasing them into the
- 1:17:14forest. I think that's a thing, and people have trauma from it.
- 1:17:17But yeah, that was that was the plot of Like that was a plot
- 1:17:21of Into the Wild. That was a true story. Like Emil Hirst was
- 1:17:24in there and then you die in the woods and then he dies and the
- 1:17:28wood. Also there's like like I guess like converging ats but like also like
- 1:17:31camps that like people send their kids who are having like mental health crisis into
- 1:17:36the woods and they leave them there and then they come out and they're like,
- 1:17:40we have a ton of trauma from you just taking me from my house
- 1:17:43and telling me to live in the woods. Hey guys, this shit got
- 1:17:45traction. Hey guys, are you sad? Sometimes you sad about your life?
- 1:17:50Have you considered just walking into the forest and just lying down and just
- 1:17:56becoming one with the trees? Have you visited Pan Dora? What if?
- 1:18:01What if? Like you had the ad with that little circle guy that's depressed
- 1:18:05and he's hopping along, but instead of recommending an antidepressant at the end,
- 1:18:10it was like throw him into the forest. Yes, Okay, I want
- 1:18:15to stop and phrase. I know we're making jokes, but like take a
- 1:18:19walk in the forest, go for a hike, but don't send your friend
- 1:18:24who's having a crisis to just live there because they don't fit in with society.
- 1:18:30Well, so Quinn wasn't even like doctor Coly was like, let's let's,
- 1:18:32you know, take a few let's do some breathwork, let's think about
- 1:18:38this remote. She was just like, you're better off there, kid,
- 1:18:40I got nothing else for you, son. I took a couple of cracks
- 1:18:43at your depression. You're the bears problem. Now they'll raise you. Yeah,
- 1:18:53that's the whole show. All right, let's let's wrap this up.
- 1:18:56Mickey. We've we've we've probably asked this question. Now. We talked about
- 1:19:00this for like an hour and a half. How do you feel about being
- 1:19:02named after doctor Quinn medicine woman. I don't know. I have like strange
- 1:19:10feelings about it. I think I feel where mom was going. But it's
- 1:19:14a terrible show, So thanks Mom. It feels like something you're gonna have
- 1:19:18to make some phone calls about it. Let's be fair to a pregnant woman
- 1:19:23in the early nineties. I feel like she had a lot going on and
- 1:19:27did not think too critically about what was going on, what was happening here?
- 1:19:30Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I mean like I kind of get
- 1:19:32it. Like she's a female doctor and mom mom is also from Colorado.
- 1:19:38Yeah, so's the female doctor in Colorado who is progressive and is like,
- 1:19:44I'm a female doctor, listen to me. And she was having a daughter.
- 1:19:47So on those premises, I do understand like wanting to name me Michaela.
- 1:19:55Also, they just say that name a thousand times depending on which parent
- 1:19:59you ask. I may he may not be named after a Mel Gibson character.
- 1:20:01So I'm named after the bad guy from Naked Guns. So you know,
- 1:20:08we all have our crosses to bear. I think parents are like families,
- 1:20:13or like maybe our parents are just like they're just like, great,
- 1:20:15I'm having a kid. We need a name that one sounds good, and
- 1:20:20then nobody nobody calls me a Mikaela. Like they choose every one person to
- 1:20:25call me. They choose their kids names the way that I choose a candy
- 1:20:28bar at to check out stand Welcome to the world, Paid Schneiders. What
- 1:20:39it always is is they spend six months arguing over a name, get down
- 1:20:44to the wire and be like, fuck, we still have not figured it
- 1:20:45out and it's coming out of there. So they're just like, I don't
- 1:20:50know what's on television right now. All right, so doctor Gwyn medicine woman,
- 1:20:57I'm mad about the show. I'm mad because I wanted to give it
- 1:21:01a fair shot. I wanted to like, I wanted to like it.
- 1:21:03I would like I wanted to walk away going all right, it's fine whatever.
- 1:21:08Instead, I'm just pissed the the ending of the Sister Ruth is one
- 1:21:14of the most cowardly things I've ever seen a TV show do. And that's
- 1:21:18it. And I mean for the the year that it came out, though,
- 1:21:24like when it's happening, like what other shows were on at the time,
- 1:21:30that's a good question. Let me type in, like I feel like
- 1:21:33for its time period, it was trying. It's darnedest. I mean two,
- 1:21:39it was trying as hard as it could as it could on fucking uh
- 1:21:43on CBS, ABC or CBS. Yeah. Top Shows of nineteen ninety three,
- 1:21:50Top rated US TV programs of ninety ninety four Home Improvement Seinfeld. Seinfeld
- 1:21:58came out that year Roseanne, which was also like Roseanne was doing like okay,
- 1:22:03I was doing like like really progressive stuff. Actually, yeah, Grace
- 1:22:09under Fire, Roseanne. I was wondering about this in the ninety ninety four
- 1:22:15TV series Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman shows up like twenty fifth in the ratings,
- 1:22:20So I don't even think it was that popular. It was well behind,
- 1:22:25uh like Seinfeld Roseanne See if I can find Murphy Brown is probably the closest
- 1:22:31thing. So it was a niche group of people watch people. But like
- 1:22:38it grew long enough that like the niche group of people that watching Doctor Quinn
- 1:22:42became the people who run all of television. Now they got everything. They
- 1:22:47they seeded that territory and now they have entire networks of their own. So
- 1:22:54great cool. I think that's about. That's about gonna wrap us up here.

- 1:23:28this space to complain about public transit in Boston. If you want to do
- 1:23:31something like that. Respect teachers, Yeah, be nice to them. Vote
