Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book of
• 0:11
Speaker 1: Exodus with Exodus 35. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to do some
• 0:26
Speaker 1: more Sabbath regulations, materials for the tabernacle, and talk about
• 0:31
Speaker 1: some of the people who did all this work, but
• 0:33
Speaker 1: first a word from this sponsor. Exodus 35, Sabbath Regulations.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them,
• 0:42
Speaker 1: these are the things the Lord has commanded you to do.
• 0:45
Speaker 1: For six days work is to be done, but the
• 0:47
Speaker 1: seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of
• 0:50
Speaker 1: Sabbath rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on
• 0:54
Speaker 1: it is to be put to death. Do not light
• 0:56
Speaker 1: a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: It's interesting, this just one short little paragraph. Now, the
• 1:05
Speaker 1: Jewish leaders, the teachers, will expand on Sabbath law. And
• 1:10
Speaker 1: by the time we get to Jesus' time in the
• 1:11
Speaker 1: New Testament, it'll get a little crazy what the rules
• 1:15
Speaker 1: are for Sabbath. And Jesus will rein it in a bit,
• 1:18
Speaker 1: saying that the Sabbath is made for man, not man
• 1:21
Speaker 1: for the Sabbath. That God put this regulation in place
• 1:25
Speaker 1: because we need rest. That that is the purpose of Sabbath.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: Materials for the tabernacle. Moses said to the whole Israelite community,
• 1:36
Speaker 1: this is what the Lord has commanded. From what you have,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: take an offering for the Lord. Everyone who is willing
• 1:42
Speaker 1: is to bring to the Lord an offering of gold, silver,
• 1:45
Speaker 1: and bronze, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen,
• 1:50
Speaker 1: goat hair, ram skins dyed red, and another type of
• 1:54
Speaker 1: durable leather, acacia wood, olive oil for the light, spices
• 1:59
Speaker 1: for the anointing, oil and for fragrant incense and onyx
• 2:03
Speaker 1: stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod
• 2:06
Speaker 1: and breast place. It's interesting that they would have these
• 2:11
Speaker 1: things with them. My impression is as they left Egypt,
• 2:15
Speaker 1: they really left with a haul that they're having some,
• 2:19
Speaker 1: you know, of these blue and purple and scarlet yarn.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: So these are important and expensive colors and, The dyes
• 2:27
Speaker 1: from the purple, for instance, that the Phoenicians will take
• 2:30
Speaker 1: their names from is from a sea snail. And it's
• 2:33
Speaker 1: hard to get. And it remains expensive into the next millennium,
• 2:39
Speaker 1: into the time of the early church. For instance, we
• 2:42
Speaker 1: hear references of so-and-so being a dyer of purple. And
• 2:46
Speaker 1: acacia wood and olive oil and spices. So they brought
• 2:49
Speaker 1: this stuff out of them. Remember, all their neighbors gave
• 2:52
Speaker 1: them a bunch of stuff when they left Egypt to
• 2:54
Speaker 1: get rid of them, to be done with them. And
• 2:58
Speaker 1: it says, all you who are skilled among you are
• 3:01
Speaker 1: to come and make everything the Lord has commanded. The
• 3:04
Speaker 1: tabernacle with its tent and its covering, clasps, frames, crossbars, posts,
• 3:09
Speaker 1: and bases. The ark with its poles and atonement cover
• 3:14
Speaker 1: and the curtain that shields it. The table with its
• 3:17
Speaker 1: poles and all its articles and the bread of the presence.
• 3:20
Speaker 1: The lampstand that is for light with its accessories, lamps
• 3:24
Speaker 1: and oil for the light. the altar of incense with
• 3:28
Speaker 1: its poles, the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, the
• 3:32
Speaker 1: curtain for the doorway at the entrance to the tabernacle,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: the altar of burnt offering with its bronze grating, its
• 3:38
Speaker 1: poles and all its utensils, the bronze basin with its stand,
• 3:43
Speaker 1: the curtains of the courtyard with its posts and bases,
• 3:47
Speaker 1: and the curtains for the entrance to the courtyard, the
• 3:50
Speaker 1: tent pegs for the tabernacle and the courtyard and their ropes,
• 3:54
Speaker 1: the woven garments worn for ministering in the sanctuary, both
• 3:58
Speaker 1: the sacred garments for Aaron, the priests, and the garments
• 4:01
Speaker 1: for his sons when they serve as priests. And so
• 4:05
Speaker 1: we have all sorts of things that are needed here,
• 4:08
Speaker 1: skills that are needed, right? You're going to need to
• 4:10
Speaker 1: have some carpenters put together the wood things. You're going
• 4:12
Speaker 1: to have people who can fashion things out of metal
• 4:16
Speaker 1: for the altar and some of those things. And for
• 4:19
Speaker 1: the lampstands, you're going to need people who can sew
• 4:22
Speaker 1: both big sewing projects like curtains as well as fine
• 4:25
Speaker 1: sewing projects like the ephod that the priests are going
• 4:29
Speaker 1: to wear. All sorts of people are needed as well
• 4:32
Speaker 1: as material. Then it says, Then the whole community withdrew
• 4:36
Speaker 1: from Moses' presence, and everyone who was willing and whose
• 4:39
Speaker 1: heart moved them came and brought an offering to the
• 4:41
Speaker 1: Lord for the work on the tent of meeting, for
• 4:44
Speaker 1: all its service, and for the sacred garments. All who
• 4:47
Speaker 1: were willing, men and women alike, came and brought gold
• 4:50
Speaker 1: jewelry of all kinds, brooches, earrings, rings, and adornments. They
• 4:55
Speaker 1: all presented their gold as a wave offering to the Lord.
• 4:58
Speaker 1: Everyone who had blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, or fine linen,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: or goat hair, ram skins dyed red, or the other
• 5:05
Speaker 1: durable leather brought them. Those presenting an offering of silver
• 5:09
Speaker 1: or bronze brought it as an offering to the Lord,
• 5:12
Speaker 1: and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of
• 5:15
Speaker 1: the work brought it. Every skilled woman spun with her
• 5:18
Speaker 1: hands and brought what she had spun, blue, purple, or
• 5:22
Speaker 1: scarlet yarn, or fine linen. And all the women who
• 5:25
Speaker 1: were willing and had the skills spun the goat hair.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: The leaders brought onyx stones and other gems to be
• 5:30
Speaker 1: mounted on the ephod and breastplate. They also brought spices
• 5:34
Speaker 1: and olive oil for the light and for the anointing
• 5:38
Speaker 1: oil and for the fragrant incense. All Israelite men and
• 5:42
Speaker 1: women who were willing and brought to the Lord freewill
• 5:45
Speaker 1: offerings for all the work the Lord through Moses had
• 5:48
Speaker 1: commanded them to do. It's interesting how many times in that,
• 5:52
Speaker 1: when it talks about all the things that they're gathering,
• 5:56
Speaker 1: it talks about those who are willing. It wasn't the
• 6:00
Speaker 1: whole community, it was those who were willing. And really,
• 6:03
Speaker 1: we know that in the church today, that the work
• 6:06
Speaker 1: that gets done is done by those who are willing.
• 6:11
Speaker 1: And it is not necessarily the work of the whole
• 6:14
Speaker 1: church community as maybe it should be, but it is
• 6:17
Speaker 1: certainly done by those who are willing, those who are
• 6:20
Speaker 1: doing the things behind the scenes or leading the worship
• 6:23
Speaker 1: or whatever the different tasks are, locking up the church
• 6:27
Speaker 1: afterwards or all of the things that have to happen,
• 6:30
Speaker 1: including mowing the grass and making sure that the light
• 6:34
Speaker 1: bulbs get replaced and all of those things are done
• 6:37
Speaker 1: by those who are willing. And I pray that we
• 6:39
Speaker 1: would be willing this week And speaking of people who
• 6:42
Speaker 1: are willing, Bezalel and Oholiab. Then Moses said to the Israelites, See,
• 6:48
Speaker 1: the Lord has chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, the son
• 6:51
Speaker 1: of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and he has
• 6:54
Speaker 1: filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding,
• 6:57
Speaker 1: with knowledge, and with all kinds of skills, to make
• 7:01
Speaker 1: artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze, to
• 7:04
Speaker 1: cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to
• 7:07
Speaker 1: engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. And he has
• 7:11
Speaker 1: given both him and Oholiab, son of Ahisamek, of the
• 7:16
Speaker 1: tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. He has
• 7:19
Speaker 1: filled them with skill to do all kinds of work
• 7:22
Speaker 1: as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn,
• 7:27
Speaker 1: and fine linen and weavers, all of them skilled workers
• 7:31
Speaker 1: and designers. It's interesting, even today, we sometimes think of
• 7:36
Speaker 1: the skills of that are sort of more religious skills
• 7:40
Speaker 1: like teaching or preaching. And we forget that God has
• 7:44
Speaker 1: used artisans, people who can, in our days, paint and
• 7:50
Speaker 1: design and use Photoshop and all of those things, as
• 7:54
Speaker 1: well as he used these two artisans to accomplish what
• 7:58
Speaker 1: he wants to do. He can use all sorts of skills.
• 8:01
Speaker 1: He can use carpenters. He can use people who are weaving.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: He can use quilt makers. In our day and age,
• 8:09
Speaker 1: all sorts of skills, when placed in the hands of God,
• 8:12
Speaker 1: can produce meaningful work. Pray that this week we will
• 8:18
Speaker 1: be among the willing and we will find meaningful work
• 8:21
Speaker 1: to do. With that, we're going to end this episode
• 8:23
