1:42
today's show, my co host Hollis Lewis's dude is back as usual and we're
1:49
honored to have Jonathan Fraser from o'kill, played at o'kill, played basketball,
2:00
went to played in college ball at Radford and Bluefield State. How do you
2:07
know all that? I gotta get research in. I gotta have it all
2:13
right, and currently CEO of hospital out of Kentucky, right and the director
2:23
of basketball operations for a newly formed charter school, Impressions Academy in Huntington.
2:30
He also is married and has four children. All right, smoking hot wife.
2:36
Tell us, so before we get started, tell us about the charter
2:39
school. Kind of what you guys are about and the initiative that you're trying
2:44
to undertake at this time. Real quickly for having me, guys, most
2:51
opinionated man lives on the hill expression academy man. I mean, I think
2:55
it's about time for us to uh have an opportunity to level the playing field.
3:01
You can send your kid the boarding school for academics, So why can't
3:04
you send your kid to a school that specializes in athletics. And I think
3:08
that's important as we we evolve. So this is what that school is.
3:12
First and foremost is a christ center school. Uh So it's a faith based
3:16
curriculum and so that's very important to our family. And then they support high
3:23
academics and elite athletics. And so that's what we want to do. We
3:25
want to marry the two and give kids UH an opportunity to expand their gift
3:30
and and and hopefully UH monetize it or or or use it to the to
3:36
the fullest of their capabilities to enhance their lifestyle. So the so if i'm
3:40
if I'm hearing you, and correct me if I'm if I'm if I'm wrong,
3:45
or it's not quite this or quite that. So what what you're making
3:50
the case for is that athletics now play a larger role and maybe even have
4:00
more value potentially than education itself. And and and you want to open up
4:11
that opportunity for them, for the for anybody or the most gifted athletes that
4:17
that come to that, come to your way, come your way. Yes
4:21
and no. The first part of it is education. Is that trump's everything
4:26
so before you know, but if you really think about it from a bilostic
4:30
standpoint, everything was working together when you're when you're in the room, you
4:32
were developing in all parts of your body, mind as well as physical.
4:35
But anyway, no, education is primary and everything that we do. But
4:41
we're also just kind of just saying, hey, this has always been what
4:44
it is. Let's start talking about it. Because when you really get to
4:47
the root cause of it all, there's a there's there's a part where we
4:54
pay five or six dollars to go see a kid play, right, we'll
4:58
go, yeah, we'll go see five six dollars see a kid play.
5:01
And we have been monetizing off of kids and saying, hey, this is
5:09
okay. Don't you worry about this part. But you keep on working five
5:14
extra hours a day doing something, and we're gonna go ahead and charge twenty
5:17
five dollars a ticket to go see you play all the time, right and
5:25
on your name and likeness, on your sweat and hard work. But that's
5:29
okay because that's what it's supposed to be. Now I think we expressions are
5:31
saying, listen, if our children are elite and education as well as athletics,
5:38
this is a place for them to come to where they can be educated
5:41
and not be influenced to do to go against the gift that God has given
5:47
them. So they're being put in the right direction. Lead kids are being
5:50
put in the right direction understanding education, understanding their body as far as they're
5:55
an being an athlete, and then giving them the resources to tell just like
6:00
if I was going to another private school that's not known for athletics, right,
6:04
we want to be able to marry that that athletic component as well as
6:08
that educational component. Hollis, you and I had talked. We had said
6:12
and I don't remember winning and how far back we had this conversation or had
6:16
a conversation. And I made the comment that when you talk about the student
6:23
athlete in reality, whether it's said or it's not said, I don't know
6:29
if that athlete exists. When you start talking about coal trying to get to
6:34
college, trying to get to be a D one player, I don't know
6:40
if if we if we are focused on truly the student athlete, because now
6:46
if you transfer you know, if you're a good player and your team's not
6:49
good, you're going to transfer where you're transform for for for that sport.
6:55
Yeah, so ain't nobody. Ain't nobody making a case for the education.
7:00
They don't care what the school, don't school, what their record is does
7:03
not matter to the transfer. What matters is what the basketball or the football
7:11
or the baseball. And I think what this basically is what I'm hearing what
7:15
this new school is going to be. It's a vocational school for to put
7:17
it in layman terms, right, it's a vocational school for athletes, just
7:21
like for example, you had a School of the Performing Arts, or if
7:26
you go to Ben Franklin or carverd or one of those schools to get a
7:29
you know, a trade. This is what this. I like that and
7:31
it doesn't really and again not necessarily sports are paramount over academics, but they
7:39
work hand in hand. And we're going to focus on bringing you in,
7:43
developing you as an athlete, and then that's going to influence your academic performance
7:46
as well. Is that what I'm hearing Will said? But I also think,
7:50
why can't they be married and be the same behold the same account,
7:56
right, I'm going to give you if I'm a high level fleet, right,
8:01
and you and everybody at this table right here can attest to that.
8:03
You being at the highest level, right, we think different. They're not
8:09
like us in certain things, in certain certain aspects because our thinking is different.
8:16
We're more we're very focused on the prize at an early age. Some
8:20
people just know this is what I want to do. And so they have
8:24
that for astronauts, they have that for soldiers right right. And and and
8:30
so if if I, if I identify a kid that's reading at the ninth
8:33
grade level in third grade, they're going to snatch that kid our thing,
8:35
put him in the put him in the place where he can what excel in
8:39
his environment or her environment. And I think that's that's very important. And
8:45
and and it's about time, because the ugly truth of the matter is sports
8:52
is bigger than what people get credit for. And when they start seeing how
8:54
it trickles down to the very fibers of community at the lowest levels, as
8:58
we've been seeing e I. E. Accual, you got to give it
9:03
credit. Like listen, sports is a driving economy, and so let's just
9:09
break down the nuts and boasts of it. So it's gonna be high school
9:11
middle school. How's that going to win? Yeah, it's gonna be high
9:13
schol national team high school, which we're really excited about. We'll have some
9:18
high level players locally as well as internationally. We're really really excited about that
9:22
one. And then our middle school, we're gonna have a national level middle
9:26
school basketball and football team. I'm in charge of the basketball, so I
9:31
can speak to that. Football team is doing a great job. But now
9:33
we're identifying elite athletes early student athletes earlier and basically those gifted kids. Now
9:45
is every kid gifted, No, but you can be in that environment,
9:48
and when you're in that structured type environment, it bears some type of fruit
9:52
when you're disciplined, when you're focused, when you're regimenting as an athlete.
9:56
So that's what we were trying to promote, an opportunity for the elite athletes
10:01
UH to come to but also elite individuals with lead with the elite mindsets.
10:05
And you mentioned football, basketball, What other sports are you on the horizon?
10:09
Football and basketball right now? But the West High School in middle yes,
10:11
and we'll have not high school football yet, that'll be next year.
10:15
And then we're supposed to be open the volleyball, the soccer as well as
10:20
we're looking at baseball and cross country for next year. Nice. Okay,
10:24
so help me with with with with with this. So I'm I'm a parent.
10:33
I have a child, and I think my child's the best kid on
10:37
the team. Okay, and I think, you know, I think he
10:41
needs more, you know. And I find I find a lot of times
10:48
when that parent is when the when the kids the best kid on the team,
10:54
I think that's an over I think that's looked at as being something even
10:58
larger, like right like so that he may be better than you just because
11:03
you know what I'm saying. But but he he may not. He may
11:05
crumble. How do you decipher that kid who's who may have some skill set
11:11
but yet can't can't get into that environment where everybody's as good or better than
11:18
him, because now he's got that challenge. How do I make that decision
11:22
to put my kid to pull my kid from here and and and go there?
11:26
Because I think that's a I think that's a I think parents see their
11:31
kids way better sometimes than maybe they are. Some may some may underestimate how
11:37
good their child could be. But I think I think it. I think
11:41
that it's heavier on seeing that the kid's better, and all of a sudden
11:48
you pull your kid, you put him in the system and and he and
11:50
he gets chewed up. Is there what they What would you tell a parent
11:56
to say? What's going to make them make that decision that they should come
12:00
to you? How could I? How could I make a decision? How
12:05
do I know how good? Or is that for you to make? Can
12:09
you make that decision? For I think it's it's it's a we ultimately make
12:13
the decision because we'll accept you or something. This is not for you,
12:16
okay, if you plan here to come to excel in basketball, if you
12:20
don't now, but we also don't turn people away. But if that special
12:24
kid says, hey, I want to come here, Mom and dad think
12:26
they're special and I'm coming here. I want to excel in basketball. He's
12:30
a great student. So that's not the issue, right. We really want
12:33
to get him more time away from the regiments and the rules of the s
12:37
sac which kind of hinder kids. That's pretty much what parents want to get
12:39
away from anyway. Be able to practice and play when they want to and
12:43
who they want to I think the cream rous is to the top. I
12:48
mean, it's just period. If you're good, you're good. I've never
12:52
met that is it? Is it? Life is sports or sports is life?
12:56
I think life is sports. Right, And so what we're just asking
13:01
is the same question if I can't. If I can't, my resume is
13:05
not good enough to get the job, what happens you don't get the job?
13:07
Yeah, and and and and I think that's important for us to understand
13:13
life is sports, not sports is life? See that this would this would
13:16
be This would have been ideal for me, right, This would have been
13:20
ideal for me because I football was it. You know what I'm saying.
13:26
I played basketball, I did this and did this, but football was it.
13:31
My dad was in the football. My mom went along with it.
13:33
You know, she wasn't necessarily a fan, but she would go along with
13:39
it. But it would be perfect for me because I've told I've said this
13:43
on the show before. I was the kid who did not look. I
13:46
didn't even want to have a fallback like don't don't don't my grades. I
13:50
don't need my grades because if I if I do grade, I do grades,
13:54
then I'm in a sense giving myself an option that one morning, I
13:58
won't wake up in the morning and and get out on the road. He's
14:01
telling the truth. Kids out there listening, vote because whether we all like
14:11
it or not, the sports is going to end one day. Trust me
14:16
about making it. Yes, it's going to end. I'm not I'm not.
14:20
I'm not bragging on it. I'm saying I know I was wrong,
14:24
like you know, and I'm gonna tell you what when I got cut,
14:26
When I got cut for four days and had no degree, you know,
14:33
and had just four years of college and just playing around for the first time
14:37
in my life, I was like, oh, what am I gonna do
14:41
now? You know, if I don't if I don't get back into if
14:45
they don't bring me back, that that that's a challenge. So I'm not
14:48
making it as a case of that's the way you do it. But I'm
14:54
just like, so we together, why can't it all be? I think
14:58
it can, and I think from most people, nobody's gonna be stupid.
15:01
It's me, you know. But but to the point that you were making
15:03
about that kid that's really wanting to be successful, that's see, that's that
15:11
would have been me and somebody would have had to slap me and say,
15:13
look, you still have to do this. Yeah, And I think it's
15:16
important because I think we see a lot of athlutes who you know, aren't
15:20
you know, frugal with their money. And like I said, whether it
15:24
ends in high school, whether in college like for me and Jonathan, or
15:26
ends in NFF, you it's going to end one day. Yes, So
15:30
it's not necessarily about having a backup plan. It's about being prepared for life.
15:33
It's going to present itself. But I would ask, I would ask
15:37
this, and this is going to be a criticism, maybe move on or
15:39
at least a talking point that some people may have. I heard a podcast
15:43
with andre Igo Dallas to today and basically what he was saying is that the
15:52
problem with n I L, the problem with monetizing athletes, particularly younger athletes
15:58
fifteen sixteen, those going to college, is that they don't develop the hunger
16:03
and they don't develop the adversity, which from his perspective, is killing American
16:08
basketball. Because we see at the top of the draft that was just last
16:11
week, it was a lot of international players, particularly from France. So
16:15
what would be sort of your response from your perspective, because not only are
16:19
you having the school, but you have kids and that you travel in the
16:23
country and different things of that nature. So what's your response to his criticism?
16:26
Right, or first shout out to Pastor Westborth giving us an opportunity and
16:32
expression. And I want to be real clear, academics and athletics is a
16:37
marriage there. Yeah, it's a marriage. Uh, And we challenge our
16:41
kids in that in that same atmosphere, but we do support athletics. Now
16:48
to your question, I'm gonnaed to repeat it again because I had to have
16:51
that disclaim and they're like, you know, hey, we don't want you
16:56
to go to school expression. I'm gonna do a play. I know.
17:00
We are a christ centered of faith program that we just believe that God is
17:04
doing something great with some kids that they put in our path, and we
17:08
believe that we can start educating kids about how to maintain and develop their gift.
17:14
Okay, but this isn't necessarily about the school itself. This is a
17:19
bigger issue, yes, But what he's basically saying Andrew Inger Dallas, former
17:23
seventy six ers, former Golden State Warrior champion basketball player, basically what he
17:29
said was that us giving these nil deals us not making kids go through the
17:34
totality of the process. You know, back in the day, you have
17:37
to stay three or four years in college, then you get drafted different things
17:41
like that. He's saying that kids lose the hunger, kids don't face the
17:45
adversity, so when they come to the NBA, they're not fully prepared to
17:51
play. They haven't developed the skill set because you don't have to get it
17:55
from the mutter or go through the grind as it were. So what was
17:59
your like, what would be a response to that? Anything that? But
18:03
parallel, I'm gonna give you analogy with my father, old school, seventy
18:07
five years old, and he tells me that he's done something, and I've
18:10
done the same thing in my career, maybe parallel. His was always harder.
18:15
His was always harder back in the day. I had to do this,
18:18
Hollis, But Daddy, I did the same thing. But no,
18:21
you didn't have to do this. I had to walk twenty more miles right.
18:23
And if you don't do it this way right, the way I had
18:27
to get it out the mud, then then we'll always identify. When you're
18:33
getting old, you're always gonna identify with a genre a decade of music.
18:36
You're not gonna let it go and you're gonna say your decade was better than
18:40
that decade. But when it comes down to it, change is hard.
18:44
Right. But when you really want to look at this thing, you're having
18:47
kids that are spending their their their their formative years sacrificing something because these kids
18:56
are playing at a high level and everyone else and this is my personal opinion,
19:00
is monetizing off of this. Yeah, right, Well, here's the
19:04
guarantees that the NFL doesn't talking, that doesn't want to give you. If
19:08
my kid spends ten years from ten, eight years from ten to eighteen,
19:14
right and does something special that people enjoy and want to purchase, right,
19:19
he's like a video, he goes viral, he does. Why can't he
19:23
benefit from that? Okay, And I'll challenge you on that, and I
19:26
would say you're right. However, when we're seeing the results, for example,
19:32
when we see the college basketball men's college basketball season, when we see
19:36
the NBA Finals, the play at least in my eyes, is mediocre at
19:40
best. And this is compared to the women's games, which we've been talking
19:42
about, which is to me, the play, the play itself not necessarily
19:48
the skill set from a viewers standpoint, is superior at this moment in time.
19:55
Follow the money. Ain't nothing wrong talking to Jonathan Now, Now,
20:04
Jonathan, when you look at the NBA, we're talking from not from a
20:07
school standpoint. We're talking you know, sports enthusiastics, sports sports experts.
20:14
The NBA is a lot, and well NBA is a lot right now.
20:21
We gotta remember in coaches lifetime, the NBA Finals was on tape record,
20:26
so it ain't that far back that the NBA was the third fourth tier.
20:30
Sports evolution is the word? What what are you scared of? I'll say
20:34
this, and I'm not a huge NBA guy, and and when I see
20:41
it, I can probably get about ten minutes of it, and I don't
20:45
I don't see I don't see the effort there. Okay, I don't see
20:48
the effort. I'm just like, did you watch the finals? Okay,
20:56
hold on, hold on, hold on. So when I watched the Girl,
21:00
when I watched the women right like, they're they're down on the ground,
21:03
they're pushing their fighting, and and again football, even in football,
21:08
I get it that it's you have to make it safe, you have to
21:14
make it save apples and oranges. You can't believe put football as a result
21:17
of safety. I don't know if them guys are out there doing it,
21:19
no, but they can't do it to a degree that some came to it.
21:23
And because they can't do it, because they because you don't have to
21:26
try to, you ain't nobody trying to tackle Walter Payton. I think you
21:30
have Walter Payton and the game. I think. I think in football,
21:33
the rules have dictated where you can't go as hard as what you want to.
21:37
Basketball is a little different. It's not the changed the rules. They
21:41
changed the rules so that more points would be increased. Yes, it's offense,
21:44
but it doesn't make a better game though what I'm telling they think that
21:48
it does. I think that I think that people think the more points on
21:52
the board makes the game better. I know some games that was seven to
21:56
nothing, that was great games. But now we don't. What we're doing
22:02
now is I think what we do now is we're trying to feed what we
22:06
think the appetite is. I want to feed you as much of offensive basketball
22:10
because you're a basketball player. I want you because I think that's what you
22:12
want to see. You don't necessarily want to see defense. You don't want
22:17
somebody going in there taking the charge. You want points. They think that
22:22
if we get more points, we get more people, we get more people,
22:26
we get more money. And I think that's how that works. They're
22:32
pros. They don't miss a lot of shots, you know what I'm saying.
22:37
Like, and I think we have to start understanding again. We be
22:38
reminded now we have a pro in here. So I'm struggling with how we're
22:44
not appreciating how these giants are working ten hours a day to be almost perfect
22:55
in their craft. Right, you're telling me I got to put a ball
23:00
in a hoop ten feet in the air and dribble past somebody ain't got one
23:03
and shoot it from twenty four feet and make it forty two of the time.
23:07
But I think if you look at it, you had one of the
23:11
best players in the NBA, Luca Donna's not play a lick of defense in
23:17
that final. But that's sports. I don't understand how that's the like.
23:21
But we're talking to afrod though I'm not to talk about skill set. But
23:23
and two, I'm gonna say it this way for you, Hollinson might not
23:27
be what you what you meant, if you're that guy, right and and
23:34
you've got a ton of fans, I'm one of them. You gotta show
23:38
me some got this. You got it. I'm looking you take p to
23:48
yall. Now, when I'm working, you don't get during you don't get
23:52
days off during the game, so you can't just play. What's your point
23:55
is, they are probably working ten hours, but you just can't work on
23:57
your offensive game, or you just get you just can't work on your defensive
24:00
game. You gotta have like a totality in both sides of the court the
24:03
NBA. But that's that's the beauty of the NBA. Those those those perfect
24:07
flaws, right, those perfect falls. You still have a premier person with
24:11
an elite gift, but they also have a personality. They also might have
24:15
some vices. They have a life, and life does trickle over to work.
24:18
That's the drama of the NBA. That does. That's the storyline of
24:22
sports that still don't negate the fact that they're shooting a ball from twenty four
24:26
five. You're right about that for those times of time. But when you're
24:30
looking at again, just to compare, when you look at the WNBA,
24:33
Aga Wilson the best player a WNBA right now. She's dogging it at both
24:37
sides of the court. She's elite offensively and she will dog you defense.
24:41
Have always been elite in the WNBA. And the fact that you're mentioning that
24:45
now lets me know that brings me right back to my premise. They started
24:48
putting dollars into that for marketing you started? Is the last time you see
24:55
the libertyal? When is the last time have you seen a w NBA?
24:57
Are you all that time? Hold your thought, hold your thought, your
25:02
first out in the box and we come back. Let's take it break and
25:04
we'll be right back. You ain't seen it when is pull it up?
25:11
We coming right back. Go ahead, I'm gonna let you go. I
25:14

25:18
in the chain before you. How many times have you seen? I got
25:21
one in the chain? You seen claytond Carko TV? I got one for
25:23
the time? Many times have you seen Don Staley with her prime on TV?
25:27
Or how many times did you see? Did you see Reggie Miller's sister
25:30
on TV? Because she was the biggest thing ever to play girls basketball and
25:34
nobody seen her I got one in the chamber before you nobody. All right,

27:22
so, just so you know, when we go to breaks, sometimes conversations
27:30
don't just they don't stop. And this may have been, this may have
27:36
been the first time. I'm not sure the studio want to go get tour
27:42
in the breaks. I don't know. Go ahead, go ahead, go
27:47
ahead, counsel. We we we may need to have seat now to there.
27:51
Just keep people in the seat. So focus. Okay, so we'll
27:59
but I'm I'm just saying like we need to. I don't think we're under
28:02
appreciating our professional athletes. And then to the point about the dub saying we're
28:06
we underappreciate our professional athletes. We still in my opinion, this is really
28:11
opinion. Oh, you make this much money, so you should do that,
28:14
right, you should do that. That expectation is for everyone in life,
28:18
all right. So, WNBA, we're talking about viewership with the WNBA
28:25
when they just started putting money in the w NBA in marketing like they should,
28:29
when Kaitlyn Clark, in my opinion, was rising to the scene.
28:33
If you look from the NCAA all the way up, you have never seen
28:36
and I'm giving you facts that that many prime time NCAA games and now w
28:41
NBA games since Kaitlyn Clark has entered into the league. And she's a phenomenal
28:48
player. She's on my list of dogs and that's that's an exclusive list.
28:52
But marketing dollars or how you're going to see that, And that's what I'm
28:57
trying to get everybody to understand. You know why you asked you ask a
29:02
young lady that plays girls basketball and ask her who, who? Who Cheryl
29:04
Miller is and she should be able to tell you. We never got a
29:08
chance to really see her, So I'm saying, is Leslie, Lisa,
29:11
Leslie. We got a chance to see her a little bit on w b
29:15
A, but people. But they should know her like they know Shot.
29:17
But we did not see you know what I'm saying, Cheryl, We did
29:21
not see Don Staley outside of the Olympics, right and so, but we
29:25
see Caitlyn Clark do type marketing. But here's my point, and I and
29:30
I agree with you in some respects. But Kaitlin Clark brought the eyes back
29:34
to or brought the eyes to women's basketball professional in college. And then once
29:41
the eyes were brought to the women's game, people started to realize and watching
29:45
the women's game that it is a better game now from a viewership standpoint,
29:51
from a from a maybe a purist, from a traditional, from a hustle
29:55
effort, it is a better game. Watching Angel Reese is like watching the
29:59
old school night These type of forward power forward center like a Charles Barkley is
30:03
something to that effect, however, and what I'm saying, though, it
30:07
is a better watch if you compare them, it's again, it's apples,
30:11
it's orange. Is the apples is different? The shorter same through difference?
30:14
Is it a shorter game in time? I don't. I don't think that's
30:18
use. I don't know, but I don't don't I don't know, but
30:21
regardless of that skill set, it's a better watch. And I think with
30:23
the better watch, then the marketing dollars or more started to come to it
30:27
and let me because because if it hold on must point, if it's not
30:32
a good game, if to me, if it's not right up there with
30:36
every other professional sports, then market dollars don't follow it well. And and
30:40
again to to your point about Caitlin, she she doesn't have to be the
30:48
best player, but what she does and what she did in college was something
30:56
that we hadn't seen. You mean best player. Now, I'm not saying
31:00
she has to be the best player in college. Okay, I'll get it
31:03
to Okay, I'll give you that. But she was the best player in
31:07
college. OKAYU was. But here's here's what I would here, here's what
31:11
I would think. And again this is not my sport, but I'm I'm
31:15
gonna say what she what she does and what she can do. With shooting
31:22
threes, I think that drew the attention to her more so than anybody else.
31:30
Is shooting. You know, you're down inside, getting the ball,
31:33
posting up, scoring, that's that's you know, that's typical basketball. But
31:38
when you're shooting half court threes normal as a normal shot. That's drawing attention.
31:48
That's what's making he appreciate, appreciate basketball. Have a basketball guy.
31:56
I'm called legend all day, coach legend. You just said doing a post
32:02
move, blah blah blah, that's typical basketball. I know. I don't
32:07
want to down play it. I'm sure. I apologize. I apologize,
32:10
I apologize, yes, And what I'm saying to that point, that's what
32:15
I love. I mean, this is just me personally. That's what I
32:16
love about the women's game. Back to the basket. It's traditional basketball.
32:22
NBA is a bunch of dudes out there shooting, but it's back to the
32:24
basket, to the baost moves. But I think, I think again,
32:30
I think from being the football player in the room. Okay, you know,
32:35
I think that everybody in football wants a touchdown. The fans want you
32:42
to score a touchdown. They don't care if it's offense defense however, but
32:45
they want touchdowns. They want to score to be forty to thirty and that's
32:51
a great football game. They don't care seven to nothing, three to nothing.
32:54
They don't want that, you know, and that doesn't and and so
33:00
the marketing piece to that that's hurting that you as the marketing part of it.
33:07
You're hoping that game is out of controlling football basketball. And again I'm
33:12
not the expert. I'm just saying, in my opinion and my view,
33:15
what makes me want to watch it is the physicality of it, of these
33:20
women, the ability to shoot shots that even the men, it's not different
33:25
than the men. I'm telling you. Let me get let's talk science of
33:28
this here, let's talk facts here. You're telling me because full disclosure,
33:32
the women's game has been on fire for the last ten years men, but
33:36
we just haven't seen we have. So back to the premise right now.
33:42
Here's the other part where I think if I could verbalize this in the right
33:44
way because I'm a I'm a girl dad, I got a basketball player,
33:47
you know, a daughter, and we've been on the circuit, we've seen
33:50
it. I appreciate women's basketball. I appreciate it so much. The good
33:57
thing that has going for it is the women's game is forty minutes long and
34:00
they only play forty games this season. Let's talk about that. Yeah,
34:06
you're tired of seeing NBA because the regular season don't matter because you see it
34:10
all the time. They play eighty some games, ninety some game, you
34:13
know what I mean. And so if you see it all the time,
34:15
that product does get a little bit what diluted. You don't see women's game
34:22
like that, So it's exciting. I mean, I didn't see this before
34:23
because you could probably tell me every move that Luca does because you see him
34:29
what so much. That's a good point because they pick the nd season tournament
34:36
in try, I think, try to spice spice it up, just like
34:38
with football. What do they want to do? They want to make you
34:42
play what more more? Yes, you're going to do games? YEA.
34:46
W n b A is a victim of the fact that they can't do that.
34:51
So they are they are victim where they actually they're victim win from not
34:53
doing what we're supposed to be doing to support them. Okay, you know
34:58
what I'm saying. I'm at the game. Is that a bad thing because
35:01
I think it's a good thing for us to watch because we're in tune with
35:05
it and it's not as saturated we're excited to see. These games are so
35:07
few, right, it's less Yeah, I would agree with that. What
35:13
is going to and I don't know if this is even a legitimate question,
35:16
but do we can you get the women to watch women's basketball because I don't
35:23
know if they're women. Well, I'm just saying I'm making the case that
35:29
I think there's a ton of men who have watched basketball who have really now
35:34
kind of falling in tour. I think in the last ten years we are,
35:38
you know, like NBA fans, let's just do that way. NBA
35:44
fans are now saying, Wow, the w NBA is really stepping up.
35:49
They put an influx of money into the w NBA highest and they attack sponsorships
35:52
because so like again my premise is the game has always been been been amazing
35:58
for the women, but nobody could see exactly. So so my point is
36:01
is now that we can see it, we're coming over. And I think
36:06
the women because traditionally WNBA was to watch by men, men was the viewership
36:12
audience. So and I think just with Caitlin Clark and the eyes on it,
36:15
now women are starting to come over. And I think that's a I
36:17
think that's a I think that's a great thing because for the for the young
36:22
girls, who I think is super who has who has who may not even
36:28
had an athletic thought to themselves, but when they see this, all of
36:32
a sudden, they're like, oh yeah, Mom, can I have a
36:37
ball? Can you buy me a ball? Oh? There's no question.
36:39
So so speaking to young people, just switch topics. Bron Bronnie James.
36:45
Now, we talked last week Son, Carl coach Lee, and we you
36:51
predicted it almost spot on. You said the Lakers was probably gonna take him
36:54
in the second round, and you said he's probably not gonna get drafted by
36:58
for the Lakers. We got two things, two points we want to cover
37:02
here now now far as the nepotism piece, and I'm gonnahoot to see you,
37:06
Jhonathan. Is this is this a good thing? Is this? How
37:08
do you view this? This is a Johnson the statement as a father,
37:15
not as a CEO, not as a coach. This is just how I
37:20
see it, as a father who who basketball has been good to our family,
37:24
right and we understand it. We've you know, they put me through
37:30
school, so it's a big part piece of our life. And pay some
37:32
bills as a referee. And you are a cultural years and I mean,
37:43
are you asking me it's nepotism? There yeah, you know, I'm just
37:45
saying in this sense, we we know nepotism and like management ownership, we
37:49
know in the business side of it that that's been happening for since forever.
37:53
But far as on the athletics side, where you actually have a father who
37:57
advocated and facilitated son to get drafted. Is this is this a good thing?
38:05
It is daddy ball, And I think it's important for us to Daddy
38:13
Ball's intricate. It's not just one classification, but it is evident that there
38:20
is favor, right Is that fair? There's favor, And I think it's
38:28
up to us as humans to understand when favor, as we talked about in
38:35
the green room, becomes discrimination to somebody else's kid or they're entitlement to be
38:38
if your kid is right. You know what I'm saying. And so the
38:43
first point is Dad's I would not if I ever accused you of daddy ball.
38:49
In the back of my mind, I'm like, I understand. In
38:53
the back of my mind, I say, I understand because at the end
38:57
of the day, blood at times is beer than water, right, And
39:01
that's a part of a father's DNA And see, and you you probably will
39:08
know who I'm talking about. But we again, we had a we had
39:12
a young kid who came through football and basketball and was really really good.
39:15
His dad coached coached him in basketball, coached him in football. But he
39:21
was good. I mean, he was legitimately good. That happened in both
39:29
in both and and I don't know if that's all and so, and I
39:36
got it. As a matter of fact. Currently, I have a dad
39:39
who refuses to run his kid because he doesn't want people to think that he's
39:46
he's all about his son. But his son can run the ball and he's
39:52
a bruiser. So you got parents that are current that I think are aware
39:57
of of that, and they're hurt. I mean they're keeping their they're trying
40:01
to pull their kids back. And to me, I think that's wrong because
40:06
how do you decide as a dad how good your kid is to where you
40:10
should be putting him out front? And can't anybody say anything Because I told
40:16
the dad whose kid who's he's a natural football player, young kid, natural
40:21
football player, And I told him, I said, I said, run
40:24
him. Don't worry about if anybody's complaining about you not letting him that he's
40:30
running the ball too. Much. I'll deal with that. I'll say this
40:36
from the nepotism fee perspective, and I'll approach it from like a socioeconomic perspective.
40:44
We have never, at least in this iteration of sports, from this
40:49
side of it, We've never had somebody like Lebron James have that much power
40:57
to influence not only his kid getting drafted, his kid getting a guaranteed contract
41:02
and probably is going to play at some point during the season. Forget the
41:07
culture. Yeah, don't he did it for the culture? Yeah, we
41:09
we've we've never had this so for that, particularly in the business that frankly
41:15
he doesn't own, right, So I think that that's about what you So
41:22
that's bigger than what you mad like that power move, and this is truly
41:25
a power move for him to be able to facilitate us in addition, not
41:30
only bringing his son in but also bringing the coach that he hand picked in
41:35
with no coaching experience, right, So he's pulling kind of all the strings.
41:38
So I say that and I admire that, and I'm for that,
41:45
and I think in some iterations it's a good thing and some it may be
41:49
bad because you know, you want your kids to go out there and get
41:52
it. Who But but as a Laker fan, I don't like it.
41:57
Who who? If I've got a son now and and and so it's set
42:01
now if I've got a kid that has a chance to play, and if
42:07
I'm just not said, if there's a possibility, I'm gonna I'm gonna,
42:13
well, how are you gonna say that? When you gotta be Lebron James
42:19
level to do that? I don't know, I don't know. I hope
42:22
you gotta be a freak freak level to put your boy, your brothers.
42:25
Not everybody doing that until ms buss. This is what you're gonna do.
42:30
Yeah. Well, and and the interesting though, the interesting piece to me
42:34
is all these teams passed on them until the Lakers had a chance to take
42:37
it. That's another part of that. You know, that's another pod.
42:39
So I know that ain't no just me taking your girl in the draft,
42:44
because I know two rounds later you're gonna take her. No, though the
42:50
word was out, don't touch them. It was an unrich Now we're talking
42:55
aout daddy ball. The unwritten norms, Yes, right, the unwritten norms.
43:01
God bless his soul. The daddy that needed your needed your input in
43:05
order for him to put his kid out there. Like when you when you
43:08
I'm gonna write book daddy Ball, and when you're talking about daddy ball on
43:10
the subject it is, there's so many different types of dads that play daddy
43:15
ball. And it's not always bad because there's a dad that that that that
43:22
plays daddy ball that says, all you kids are mine. But but but
43:25
is it good? Though you said it's not always bad? Is it good?
43:29
Is it good? What I'm saying is this, Lebron James had the
43:32
power to not only facilitate his son coming to the team in which he plays
43:37
for, he had the power to say somebody drafting, and somebody would have
43:40
drafted him right regardless of the Lakers at fifty five or maybe even later in
43:45
the draft, somebody gonna pick him up. You talking about But I asked
43:49
this, though, is it a good thing? Because what's gonna happen?
43:52
Lebron has been an upstanding citizen. He's been one of the best, you
43:55
know, role models that sports have ever seen. But what happens to the
44:00
irresponsible guy who just pushing his son through who's who? Who maybe is not
44:05
as deserving. Ultimately, does this? Does this hurt sports? I got
44:09
a question. I answer my question, does it hurt sports? I think
44:15
it does? I first really think it does? I do? And then
44:20
I have this question. Hold on, mister fran does it You don't?
44:23
You don't think it's hurts sports overalls. That's that's why we're talking about this.
44:31
That's why there's an ESPN. It has sports has to evolve. And
44:36
these are the processes and and and this is the change that we see involve
44:40
nepotism. No, nepotism is always there. There's always not in this iteration.
44:46
We have never seen this. This is what player have. You know,
44:50
it's lobby to get his subtry, but you've seen it in them.
44:52
You see you see what Jay Jones does. No, no, no,
44:54
no, I'm not talking about on the corporate side. I understand that.
44:57
I'm talking about strictly on the players aside. I'm talking about some players.
45:00
So if it's unprecedented, that's what makes it so big. But it's not
45:06
new. Yeah, I mean that part fair well, it's really not new.
45:10
It's not new, it's not it's not the real buzz. Nobody neither
45:15
said that. You have a black million billionaire that's the see. See,
45:21
we're gonna talk about these things. We gotta be day. You got a
45:24
black billionaire that's never been done. That's true. Well, and and then
45:30
and and let's and let's be let's be honest. Once you and there's gonna
45:36
be other black folks who are gonna enjoy that because because he's got that opportunity
45:42
to do that, he can do that. That's to me, I understand,
45:45
I understand that. I just I come from. I come from the
45:51
dad who's sitting down with me after after the day after the game, at
45:54
the breakfast table and telling me everything that I did wrong. He ain't he
45:58
ain't. He ain't telling the coach to play. He's telling me that the
46:02
expectation is for us to get the Sunday. And I said, us get
46:07
the Sunday. And would you want your son in that situation to step outside
46:13
of my shadow? To step outside? Because again he's already a junior,
46:16
he's playing. He dad picked him up. Everything has been Dad, Dad,
46:20
Dad. At some point, do you say, all right, man,
46:23
I'm gonna give you the all of you, so I'm gonna make sure
46:27
you get to this level. But you gotta go somewhere else and find your
46:30
own path. You see what I'm saying. Is that a better methodology than
46:34
just saying just come with me? Full circle? But either one of you
46:37
all saw did any of you see the Brownie's interview? No, man,
46:45
when you I don't care where you are on it, he's gonna change him
46:50
mind because he's he's he's making the case that everybody's complaining, everybody's calling it
46:55
negative and all that he's the worst person to do that. That should be
47:00
Lebron because this is a kid who we don't know yet, we don't know
47:05
how great he's gonna be, and he's out there saying this shouldn't be a
47:09
problem. I should we should be able to do this. You know,
47:13
you know all you all saying this? That should be Lebron because if it
47:19
does not work out, everything in his everything coming out of his mouth is
47:24
like this, This ain't a problem. That shouldn't be an issue. This
47:28
is just y'all people who just don't like it. If it doesn't work out,
47:31
then the then the blood is not on Lebron's hands. I've done everything
47:35
that I've done for you as a father. I've walked you into the family
47:38
business. But that's that's that's that's that's hands from because because because here I
47:47
am, I am opening up a door for you in the family business,
47:51
it just happens to be the lakers. I got you. And that's fair.
47:53
That's a fair point, right. What you do with it is on
47:58
you because we as fathers, we can't control our children, but we can
48:04
we can get them to the place where they can make a decision for themselves.
48:07
What we are underestimating as a fact is that is at their level.
48:12
It's just not at ours because we look up to that like whoa, you
48:15
know, the wow wow. But this is what they do every day.
48:19
This is business. I am walking you, this is legacy. You were
48:22
born to do this. Why didn't nobody talking about George Bush junior and senior
48:28
He walked them right into it. Yeah, but he had to go win
48:30
an election on his own. He wasn't drafted to the What do you do
48:34
you actually think? But it's still a process dealing with millions. You just
48:40
can't say there's still some rands. Do you think though, and I think
48:45
this is to Hollis's point, Do you think though that this this step is
48:52
the is the is the most boldest step in maybe in the NBA, and
49:00
it doesn't change going forward. I don't. I don't think it changes much
49:04
because again, you only got one Lebron James. This ain't gonna be for
49:07
everybody, but you, you're gonna think, see, okay, so let
49:10
me let me give you, let me give let me give you this,
49:13
Let me give you this, whether NBA, NFL, baseball, doesn't matter.
49:24
Every guy everybody's looking at, every player is looking at Lebron and saying
49:30
he's a great player and he's making all that money. But they not necessarily
49:34
saying, you know, some of the better players, not saying, you
49:37
know, he deserves anything more than me, and I'd be able to do
49:43
what he's doing just because you see what I'm saying, Because because you're talking
49:46
about the top egos, the top you talking about the top egos. Ain't
49:52
nobody sitting around like just saying, oh, I'm good with that because you
49:54
know that's Lebron. So the premise is saying like, if he can do
49:58
it, I can do it absolutely, which I I mean I could see.
50:00
So what makes him any more special just because what he scores more points
50:04
he's got I would just say the things that he's built on and off the
50:08
court, right that, the legacies that he's leaving behind. He's arguably some
50:14
people will say he's the greatest basketball player ever. Right, And just back
50:17
to the point, I would say that did he do too much for Bronni
50:23
Because every every every successful second generation business whatever, you hear the stories my
50:30
dad, my granddad made me scoop the stuff at the farm. I had
50:36
to go clean the floors at the office. Didn't low your straight up into
50:39
level thoughts, and I had to and I had to work my way up.
50:43
Every summer I was doing this, and then when I got out of
50:45
college, I did this and I worked my way all the way to the
50:47
top. Those are the stories success, second third, fourth generation stories that
50:52
I heard. So with this move, you getting drafted, you going through
50:55
this whole process, getting a guaranteed contract, so that means you're gonna play
51:00
at some point during the season, right, So is it too much too
51:04
early? Too soon? I think so entry level. You mentioned that my
51:07
dad I had to go scoop and wash windows and things of that nature.
51:13
So I want to I want us to gauge what we're looking at here at
51:15
their level, right, and this is entry level, So noe that okay,
51:20
this is entry level that I like jo for him. What I'm saying,
51:23
this is entry level. And what's better than one billionaire? Two,
51:27
two and about to be what three? Now? Three is the real deal?
51:31
We could draft him first round. You first, I see where I'm
51:36
going. You see see le Bron's got us talking about this, but he's
51:38
really trying to own these teams and own this brand. And sometimes you have
51:45
to step out like this in order to get y'all distracted about this because I'm
51:51
really doing something bigger than that. Y'all, stay on, Brinnie. I
51:52
know what briani't gonna do. Brian ain't gonna get it. He's gonna be
51:55
okay, but he's gonna be still continually to make millions every year, continuing
52:00
our brand, continue our legacy. I got a real dog coming up in
52:04
the next two years. Got a real dog, a real dog. And
52:06
so you know, I got Bronnie, and like this, you already know
52:08
number one pick is going wherever I wanted to. So do you see what
52:13
I'm saying? I kind of like that. So we can't stop. We
52:16
gotta stop looking at the power moves or power moves. And if you don't
52:22
understand it, you're gonna talk about it. You know what I'm saying,
52:27
And and and and and we allow presidents to do this, right, Lebron
52:32
is not thinking about daddy ball. We are because that's at respectfully just me
52:36
speaking my level. Right. But when you really think about this, this
52:40
is Lebron's boys summer job. When you're thinking about the level of it,
52:46
this is your summer job. I would love. I don't have it in
52:51
my mind yet. I don't want to tell you that, but I don't
52:54
have I don't have anything. He's already he's already worth twenty million. Yeah,
53:00
the kids hurready worked twenty million. This is a summer job. That's
53:04
okay. I see what you're saying. If does in fact a bigger player,
53:07
which I think it is, little Bro, I think he'll. I
53:08
think he'll be an NBA team owner, y NFL team owner. I think
53:13
he'll he's the test sport, multi sport, big major sport team owner.
53:19
So if you're prosing a fast standpoint, then I could see what you're saying.
53:22
I mean I could. I think we're reading out that's all opinion.
53:24
But but but still as a Laker fan I don't like because they ain't helped
53:28
win no championship. Let's talk out to grab the magnitude. We are we
53:30
talking about this because it's a basketball player. Because I just pulled up a
53:35
stat thirteen. Check this out, guys. Coaches projected examined nepotism in the
53:38
league. In twenty twenty two, twelve of the thirty four NFL head coaches,
53:43
including two interim coaches, were related to a current or former ones.
53:46
Of the seven hundred and seventy on the field coaches that season, at least
53:50
thirteen percent had a father, son, or brother who was who was currently
53:53
on a former NFL team or a coach. What does that say? Could
53:58
you say that's nepotism or could you say my bloodline is thorough you know?
54:06
Silence, Yeah, yeah, yeah. We might not want to hear him
54:08
one here no more. Because if you're in that environment, imagine if you
54:15
can reciprocate, and I don't know if you have, but if you reciprocate,
54:17
if you had a video of what you had to do, in a
54:20
synopsis of how you had to get there, and you can preciprocate that to
54:24
the point where kids could register that I'm talking about how they read it.
54:27
You just take it, write it down. You did this, this,
54:29
this, this, and this right, you had that channel up and you
54:31
could give it to those kids. Man, you would produce higher level athletes.
54:38
It's just what it begots. It's just what it begots. And so
54:43
I think that that that my whole family's good, y'all. Like I got
54:50
two NBA guys and my family in the NFL. Guy Calvin Johnson, you
54:54
know, toddwan Lost. This is my cousin, the first cousin. This
54:58
is blood right, all them guys down the logan, all them Murphy's and
55:01
all them roles, them them them roses. Then my people. And so
55:07
I got a six nine nephew that's gonna go to the league. You see
55:10
what I'm saying in our household is structure for excellence. You see what I'm
55:16
saying. Like, And so when people start saying, all this is daddy,
55:20
all these kids can't be good? Why not? Yeah? Because because
55:23
we haven't really seen it, I think at fuller Yeah we yeah, we
55:30
we've seen it at at a at a younger level, and it's like,
55:32
Okay, that's that's gonna run out. Now you are, but you're seeing
55:38
it. But you've seen even like Deon Sanders. We got to remember Deon
55:42
Sanders. What people don't realize. He has four children that play Division one
55:46
four four Division one three to play Division on football. One of the girl
55:51
played basketball, the Mannings, the Mannings the man. So we have Yeah,
55:55
his dad pulled strings and get him playing what they played together. Floyd
55:59
Maywell, the Kobe Bryant, Christal McCain. Yeah, so we we we
56:04
see the iterations of it. We just never seen it like this. Yeah.
56:07
I think I think this is like a shock to the system. Kobe
56:09
got rid of shock, y'all. Yeah, yeah, I'll just say this.
56:15
I think I just think we just have never We've never seen it so
56:21
outward blatant blade. You've never seen what the media portrayed as failures do what
56:28
we're doing. You have never seen an African American man do this in a
56:36
genre that we really care about, that we really care about because you have
56:39
seen it in as a president. Guys. Yeah, I mean what did
56:44
that like? So That's what I'm like, what are we talking about?
56:49
You had a black president eight years ago, I mean, and you have
56:52
a I mean, you've seen Kyward moves bye bye bye by strong African American
56:58
people. What is the difference because it's basketball. Well, you might have
57:02
sold me man, he may he may, he may have got a big
57:07
Well. No, I think I think to look at it from a higher
57:09
perspective probably was a much needed conversation. And I think we just looked,
57:14
like I said, I'm looking at it from a fans perspective. I'm not
57:16
necessarily looking at it from social. Yeah, I'm looking for and I looked
57:20
at from the social perspective. But I think I think the benefit that you
57:23
have is that you're in it. Yes, you know what I'm saying.
57:27
You're in it, and you and you're under yes, and you're understanding it
57:31
and and and I would to say, I'm gonna use this word manipulating it
57:36
in a way that you think is best, and that's not as negative,
57:39
you know. So yeah, because I think I think I think that's something
57:44
with morality, Yes, morality, because you've seen it, you've seen it
57:47
work against you, and now you're saying, Okay, now I'm in a
57:52
position that I can do it, and don't judge me. If if if
57:59
I'm putting I'm placing my kids in the right product, and they don't.
58:02
Don't forget the product speaks for itself. Yeah, exactly, the product speaks
58:06
for itself. But like my my my middle school kid, my baby boy,
58:09
he's a fourth grader. He plays on the sixth seventh grade level.
58:13
He can't do that if he goes to public school, right, And so
58:17
now I'm playing him at the middle school level with another fifth grader that's elite,
58:22
another little fifth grader named Noah, and they are all ling. And
58:29
so what do you gotta let horses do? We got, we got,
58:32
we gotta, we gotta get there, and we gotta get there and see
58:35
we see, we we gotta come. We gotta come to you and and
58:39
and see this, you know, because I want to. I want to
58:43
see this firsthand. It's a fourth grader. Well, you see, you've
58:46
seen list. Don't get me talking about my diggie. You know, that's
58:50
the dad. But there's the part that we gotta understand. There's the dad
58:52
component that that that I in my heart feel like my kids are elite.
58:58
And then there's reality. Okay, then there's reality, and you know how
59:01
I had to deal with that. So that so You could always say Fraser
59:05
was delusional about his kids. But this is why, this is what,
59:07
this is what the parameter was, this is what the point of emphasis was.
59:10
I played them against the elite engaged at that point you have to do
59:16
so you see what I'm saying. So, oh, he's daddy about it.
59:19
No, no, no, I put my resources, my time and
59:22
put my kids on the elite level. And I'm gonna close on this one.
59:29
And the most interesting piece to that is they when they understand that they're
59:36
playing in that at that level. That's the biggest thing. Once you once
59:42
you you know, walking into Marshall and playing four years at Marshall. Anybody
59:46
could play at Marshall, you know. That's that's how everybody his fool ain't
59:50
thinking he gonna go play nowhere on Sunday, and then you're getting Sunday.
59:52
I love Marshall and me too, and then getting to the league and then
59:59
actually having success. There's a thousand millions of people who knew me who was
1:00:04
saying that fool ain't gonna never play up there, right, And there's no
1:00:07
way we'll get your college paid for or maybe get some nil before you're eighteen.
1:00:12
So that you can have a nest egg when you start trying. Yes,
1:00:14
yes, yes, so that's what we're after all R Yeah, this
1:00:19
clearly I don't know if we I don't know we really finished this at all,
1:00:22
but we're gonna have to come back on it. But I do want
