- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:03Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. The world's
- 0:09Speaker 1: origional pocket Welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered. This isn't the boy scouts.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I hear it all the time about Jacobe. Oh, he's
- 0:23Speaker 1: so reliable, he was such a great teammate. Does that
- 0:26Speaker 1: win you football games? Catch a touchdown on Buffalo and
- 0:29Speaker 1: go dance on that dangle ogo and shove it in
- 0:32Speaker 1: their faces. He's mad at Evan, he says. So, he says,
- 0:35Speaker 1: boy scouts don't win your super Bowls, But TikTok and
- 0:38Speaker 1: bad guys win your super Bowls. Please. Stevie from Texas
- 0:41Speaker 1: is mad at Evan too, he says, is wild and
- 0:48Speaker 1: a lot of the bad juju last year was the
- 0:50Speaker 1: fact that the offensive side of the ball is no.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I didn't I'm like intrigued that he doesn't have an agent,
- 1:01Speaker 1: that his mom and his agent, we don't know if
- 1:04Speaker 1: they hadn't reached out to Lamar's mom. Hey, mom, what
- 1:07Speaker 1: what does he want? If you put your brain power
- 1:10Speaker 1: to it, we can figure out how to get rid
- 1:12Speaker 1: of the telephone poles. I mean, that's why I'm called
- 1:14Speaker 1: two and a half shows, and there's no update on you.
- 1:18Speaker 1: It's working its way through the legislature. This is Patriot's Unfiltered,
- 1:23Speaker 1: fueled by dumb can Because all right, where's Andy when
- 1:29Speaker 1: I need him? My cat? Open my water? Your husband?
- 1:34Speaker 1: Lets see those. Paul's going to open it? Be you hands, Oh,
- 1:38Speaker 1: no problem, look at mister claw untwisted, No Fred, thank you,
- 1:43Speaker 1: thank you, Paul, thank you. Go Denis to be up.
- 1:46Speaker 1: You can. I used to have Andy opened my my
- 1:48Speaker 1: bottles for me. It's true and good to do it.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He's strong and he would like accept it willingly. I
- 1:57Speaker 1: was out back. What did you say ripping up using
- 2:01Speaker 1: the chainsaw? This point? All right, Uh, it is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 2:05Speaker 1: We are here until twelve. It's Duce, it's Evan, it's Paul,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's myself, Matt and the booth. We're talking everything Patriots.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We're gonna leave a little early today. We'll end the
- 2:14Speaker 1: show about ten minutes early so we can go to
- 2:17Speaker 1: Devin mccordy's retirement ceremony here and they're gonna do it
- 2:22Speaker 1: in the Patriots Hall of Fame something that the whole
- 2:24Speaker 1: thing going. It's gonna be exciting. Yeah, you know, I'm
- 2:27Speaker 1: gonna get up there, though. We're gonna run up there
- 2:30Speaker 1: real quick and try to find our positions. So yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: give Devin his due. Paul, will you be speaking at
- 2:35Speaker 1: the ceremony? I don't believes to speak, no, okay, I
- 2:38Speaker 1: think they leave that to more important people, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 1: like Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft. But we'll do that. Um.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And of course we want to talk about what's going
- 2:46Speaker 1: on in free agency. Um. You know, we're fully in
- 2:50Speaker 1: it now, and I think that there might be some
- 2:55Speaker 1: something to the whole Hopkins talk with the Patriots. I
- 2:59Speaker 1: don't know. I just think what Cooks Cooks went for.
- 3:02Speaker 1: If you don't get one of those guys, it's I mean,
- 3:04Speaker 1: it's just it feels like a time bomb. And if
- 3:06Speaker 1: some other team goes and get some I think, what
- 3:08Speaker 1: would you say upstairs? At what was the price? You
- 3:10Speaker 1: could see? Maybe like a fourth this year and a
- 3:11Speaker 1: third next year? Maybe like something in that realm, Like
- 3:14Speaker 1: if another team gets DeAndre Hopkins for that, or you know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: OBJ signs for you know, something that doesn't seem like
- 3:21Speaker 1: that overwhelming certainly not twenty million. But here's here's what
- 3:24Speaker 1: we gotta make it happen. The Patriots are in a
- 3:26Speaker 1: good situation with him because with Monte austin Ford over there,
- 3:30Speaker 1: at least they know they're going to get information, Like
- 3:32Speaker 1: if another team is you know, the Patriots will give
- 3:35Speaker 1: their shot. Yeah, you know, and if the price is
- 3:38Speaker 1: too high, the price is too high. But at least
- 3:40Speaker 1: they'll get the infro from Austin Ford and be able
- 3:44Speaker 1: to make a decision. And it doesn't seem like he
- 3:45Speaker 1: screw with them or you know, try to use them
- 3:47Speaker 1: as leverage against other like, it just seems like he'd
- 3:49Speaker 1: be upfront about it. So my feeling is right now,
- 3:52Speaker 1: it's been an okay, you know, start to free agency,
- 3:55Speaker 1: not nothing to do backflips about nothing to you know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: feel like the world is ending about. But I still
- 4:00Speaker 1: think they need that key peace and it's just what
- 4:01Speaker 1: the price is, like, just make it happen. Make it happen,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you know. I just the more they can do now,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the less you know, they have to pick for need
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the draft and they can take that best guy available,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you know. I mean I would wonder if you got
- 4:16Speaker 1: Hopkins how much of an how much you then really
- 4:19Speaker 1: do target the wide receivers, And I mean I know
- 4:21Speaker 1: I'm on record saying I do it every year. I'd invest,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, a third, fourth at least every year in
- 4:26Speaker 1: a wide receiver. I think it's that important of a position.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But you know, you get that guy. You've got five
- 4:31Speaker 1: receivers on the roster, where's their really room? Take one
- 4:34Speaker 1: maybe in the second if I love a guy, or
- 4:36Speaker 1: even the third, Yeah, I would too, Fred, It wouldn't
- 4:38Speaker 1: change my my draft thoughts on the on the on
- 4:41Speaker 1: that position at all. And I also wonder, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 1: what the the compensation for Hopkins and you guys probably
- 4:49Speaker 1: have more up to up to date information because, as
- 4:51Speaker 1: you guys know, I sort of I leave you tap
- 4:54Speaker 1: out during leave for a while. But the last I saw,
- 4:58Speaker 1: they were kind of looking for a player, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: as well as a draft pick. And I just wonder
- 5:04Speaker 1: if maybe Chris Bord that you don't trade the best
- 5:09Speaker 1: special teams player in the league right after you. I mean,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I tidn't get an opportunity to well improve something. That's
- 5:14Speaker 1: the whole other thing. I want to play ten plays
- 5:16Speaker 1: a game. You gotta do it, you know. Anyway, what
- 5:19Speaker 1: if you package one if your wide receivers in the deal, Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: That's what I threw out there for Judy would be
- 5:26Speaker 1: because they rumored for Judy was it's either a first
- 5:29Speaker 1: round pick or it's a second round pick plus a
- 5:31Speaker 1: rosterable player, right they want. Those are sort of the
- 5:34Speaker 1: two packages that they're they're dealing with in Denver. And
- 5:36Speaker 1: so I've said, what about forty six and Kendrick Borne, Like,
- 5:39Speaker 1: you're already not playing Kendrick Boorne. He's already somebody that's
- 5:43Speaker 1: on the outside of the circle of trust right now.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So at that point, you're also getting a player that's
- 5:47Speaker 1: a little bit redundant to Kendrick Borne anyways. And Judy,
- 5:50Speaker 1: So I think that would work out for both sides.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But with Hopkins, I think I go back to what
- 5:55Speaker 1: Mike said, which is this is probably not going to
- 5:58Speaker 1: cost very much Like this, the day of Hopkins getting
- 6:01Speaker 1: back this monster return are gone based off of what
- 6:04Speaker 1: Brandon's costing you money for him. That's like, yeah, that
- 6:08Speaker 1: I agree. I think it's gonna get you. You're not
- 6:10Speaker 1: gonna have to give up a first round pick for Hopkins,
- 6:12Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't even if you're gonna have
- 6:13Speaker 1: to give up a second round pick for him, Like
- 6:15Speaker 1: Brandon Cooks just went for a fifth and the sixth.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I think Hopkins a better player, but you don't go
- 6:19Speaker 1: from a fifth and the sixth to forty sixth overall
- 6:23Speaker 1: just because he's a little bit of a better player, right,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I mean you're talking about probably mid round draft picks.
- 6:27Speaker 1: The contract to think. Ian Rappaport said this morning that
- 6:30Speaker 1: he would be open to reworking his contract to make
- 6:33Speaker 1: it more salary cap friendly for whatever team it might
- 6:36Speaker 1: apply cap friendly, but he's not going to accept less money. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: I mean I wouldn't think he's gonna say, oh, oh yeah,
- 6:43Speaker 1: I was supposed to get this, you only have to
- 6:45Speaker 1: give me half of this. Oh, you might be able
- 6:46Speaker 1: to get him like a two year deal or something.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like like Evan said, it'll be better on
- 6:50Speaker 1: the cap. Yeah, but that doesn't worry. Maybe you get
- 6:53Speaker 1: Arizona to pay some of it, and you give him
- 6:55Speaker 1: a higher draft pick to pay a part of the salary,
- 6:57Speaker 1: something along those lines. But I'm not I'm not in
- 7:01Speaker 1: love with Hopkins in terms of his pairing with what
- 7:04Speaker 1: they already have, because I think that that makes you
- 7:07Speaker 1: overly reliant on possession receivers that win contested catches, like
- 7:11Speaker 1: I feel like that skill set would be all over
- 7:14Speaker 1: the field. Then for the Patriots, I'd rather a dynamic
- 7:17Speaker 1: route runner, somebody like a Jerry Judy or even in
- 7:19Speaker 1: the draft. But we talk about it all the time.
- 7:22Speaker 1: They need some buzz, they need a guy that's gonna
- 7:24Speaker 1: that's gonna attract some attention defensively in terms of game
- 7:27Speaker 1: plans and things like that. And he certainly still does
- 7:30Speaker 1: all of that, so he can't hate on it if
- 7:32Speaker 1: that's what they do. Okay, So you know, I think
- 7:35Speaker 1: there is some smoke there. I think I think the
- 7:37Speaker 1: Patriots are doing their due diligence as they should and
- 7:40Speaker 1: any general manager should, and I think we'll see what
- 7:43Speaker 1: happens there. The other thing, you know, I want to
- 7:45Speaker 1: talk about is, you know, again Paul Show just up
- 7:50Speaker 1: in arms that the Patriots are wasting money on special teamers,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and I just think that I just think that's just laughable.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I mean, you know, wasting money like they spend eight
- 8:02Speaker 1: million on a few guys, including Matthew Slater, and like
- 8:05Speaker 1: they do this every year. It's not a big deal.
- 8:09Speaker 1: It's not a big deal. It's not gonna like preempt
- 8:11Speaker 1: them from getting Jerry Judy or Hopkins or anyone else.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It's and you need these guys you need I believe
- 8:19Speaker 1: you need core special teamers. Now you can argue about that,
- 8:22Speaker 1: but like, this isn't breaking the bank what they're doing.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It's not taking away from anything else that they might
- 8:28Speaker 1: be able to do. It's just so easy. It's so easy.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I mean, this is you know, this is you kill
- 8:33Speaker 1: him for. I mean, you know, Joe cardonicks the biggest contract,
- 8:36Speaker 1: it's easy. I mean, it's just a layup, you know.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But like but the biggest contract, like that's all relative,
- 8:42Speaker 1: it's all relative. I don't but you know, it's it
- 8:45Speaker 1: is what it is. I mean, I mean I don't
- 8:47Speaker 1: really like and I know we'll get into it, but like,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you know, Bill Belichick, I know we all think he's
- 8:51Speaker 1: still a pretty good coach. If he goes on a
- 8:53Speaker 1: whole rant about how some guy is the best special
- 8:55Speaker 1: teamer in the league and then he signs in the
- 8:56Speaker 1: next year, it's like, well, that's what you signed up
- 8:58Speaker 1: for with Bill Belichick. This is what he likes. And like,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you know, I'm sorry that you know, it hasn't been
- 9:02Speaker 1: the big splash moves yet, but I can't really fault
- 9:05Speaker 1: him for finishing with terrible special teams and then bringing
- 9:07Speaker 1: in a guy that he spent all our time guys
- 9:09Speaker 1: back to play special Yeah, and and Felger you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: says it wasn't the players, it was the coaching, which
- 9:14Speaker 1: is partly true, the only fair argument that I'll agree
- 9:19Speaker 1: with that. But you know, we don't we don't absolutely
- 9:22Speaker 1: know what Joe Judge's role is going to be this year.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I've heard advisor, but if you don't think he's going
- 9:27Speaker 1: to at least help out with special teams, then then
- 9:30Speaker 1: get rid of him. I think he will help out
- 9:32Speaker 1: with special teams, and history says that he's a pretty
- 9:35Speaker 1: good special teams coach. So I like, I'm okay with
- 9:40Speaker 1: signing the crisp boards of the world. That's fine, it's
- 9:43Speaker 1: it's okay. Paul's looking at me like, okay, seeing it up.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Go ahead, it's a little early. Go ahead. Well, I
- 9:52Speaker 1: mean I'll continue to see it up and then Paul
- 9:54Speaker 1: probably get triggered a little bit and he'll jump in.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I'm sure, but you know, look, I think Cody Davis,
- 10:00Speaker 1: he played six games last year, so you know, and
- 10:02Speaker 1: I went and looked what were the worst special teams
- 10:05Speaker 1: performances by the Patriots last year. Most of them came
- 10:08Speaker 1: at the end Week eighteen, Buffalo Week sixteen, Cincinnati Week twelve,
- 10:12Speaker 1: Minnesota Week fifteen, Las Vegas. I mean that's the bottom four. So,
- 10:15Speaker 1: I mean, this is the end of the year, when
- 10:17Speaker 1: Jake Bailey's out, when Cody Davis is out, when you've
- 10:20Speaker 1: got yeah games like Baltimore, Baltimore's fifth three that was
- 10:27Speaker 1: that was fifth, yep, seventeenth was was Yeah. So I mean,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you know, there, maybe they did have the worst punter
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the league. Yeah, Jake Bailey, and he's healthy and
- 10:35Speaker 1: he's gone. But I'm saying so. But I mean special
- 10:38Speaker 1: teams were bad. I'm not arguing that they shouldn't be
- 10:42Speaker 1: trying to improve their special teams. I'd argue they haven't,
- 10:45Speaker 1: but I wouldn't argue that they shouldn't be trying to. Yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: my only argument with you, like does money count or not?
- 10:52Speaker 1: Like all of a sudden, like the cap isn't important.
- 10:55Speaker 1: But then when I say it's not important, you argue
- 10:58Speaker 1: with me and say it is important. So does it
- 11:02Speaker 1: matter or not? Like eight million dollars doesn't matter? Okay,
- 11:05Speaker 1: So all right, I just want to know which millions
- 11:07Speaker 1: patter on which don't. So I did the math because
- 11:09Speaker 1: I think paying the long snapper the highest long snapper
- 11:12Speaker 1: contract in the league is absolutely absurd. But what does
- 11:15Speaker 1: that mean, Paul, It's not like that because you don't
- 11:16Speaker 1: need to do it. Every long snapper in the league
- 11:18Speaker 1: should make the minimum for the amount of years that
- 11:21Speaker 1: that guy's in the league. It basically is the that's
- 11:23Speaker 1: the least amount of money he should be able to make,
- 11:25Speaker 1: is what he should make if for his experience, he's
- 11:27Speaker 1: making the minimum. It's like two hundred and fifty thousand
- 11:30Speaker 1: dollars more than the minimum for a guy would need
- 11:34Speaker 1: to waste the money. Come on, I'm just saying, if
- 11:37Speaker 1: you want to count money, I know, but I do
- 11:40Speaker 1: want the guy that we're talking about here, who Fred
- 11:44Speaker 1: named by name, So I'll do Dude, Felger doesn't want
- 11:46Speaker 1: to talk about the money because he's been telling me
- 11:49Speaker 1: that for the last ten years. He tells you that
- 11:50Speaker 1: the cap is crap. So is it crap or does
- 11:52Speaker 1: it matter? Right? Because you can't you can have him
- 11:55Speaker 1: the argument back against that. Now, I don't have any
- 11:57Speaker 1: you know, on a full disclosure, I have no idea
- 11:59Speaker 1: what all Gremmage I've been talking about because for a
- 12:01Speaker 1: week because I haven't heard it. I know, Okay, so
- 12:04Speaker 1: I haven't heard any of it, So I'm not Oh
- 12:06Speaker 1: he went on a ranch. So you guys might be
- 12:08Speaker 1: right that they might be saying stupid stuff because that's
- 12:11Speaker 1: what they do. I mean, I'll be in full disclosure
- 12:14Speaker 1: that's what they do. But you can't tell me it
- 12:17Speaker 1: doesn't matter. And then when they spend more money on
- 12:20Speaker 1: special teams than most other teams, tell me it doesn't
- 12:23Speaker 1: matter because relative it's not a lot of money. Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 1: because like money matters, or it doesn't matter when you
- 12:28Speaker 1: say they spent more than any other team, like we're
- 12:31Speaker 1: talking about pennies in the world of NFL football more
- 12:35Speaker 1: than other teams, you know, So it's not the big
- 12:37Speaker 1: a deal. And I think every team has core special
- 12:40Speaker 1: team players. Yeah, I think in general those guys are
- 12:43Speaker 1: on rookie contracts. They're not Cody Davis. Well, the other
- 12:46Speaker 1: the other argument against what I'm saying is that, well,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you know, the two worst teams and special teams, according
- 12:51Speaker 1: to Goose Gosselin or whatever his name is is, was
- 12:55Speaker 1: Kansas City and the Eagles, the two teams that were
- 12:58Speaker 1: in the Super World. They had statistics Stickley you know,
- 13:01Speaker 1: by his rating the worst special teams in the league,
- 13:04Speaker 1: which is fine, Which is fine. They had a great team,
- 13:10Speaker 1: so it didn't really matter that much. When you're a
- 13:12Speaker 1: team like the Patriots or any team in the middle
- 13:15Speaker 1: of the league. I think everything matters now. I would
- 13:17Speaker 1: also say you can literally lose games because of stupid
- 13:20Speaker 1: special teams plays. Point is is really dead on. Like
- 13:25Speaker 1: your kick your kick coverage completely collapsed when you could
- 13:29Speaker 1: no longer kick touchbacks. This is why I don't want
- 13:32Speaker 1: to put any over exert myself to try to show
- 13:36Speaker 1: our special teams. I don't think it's a big part
- 13:37Speaker 1: of the game anymore unless you can't get the ball
- 13:40Speaker 1: to the end zone. You know. Yeah, I was wrong.
- 13:44Speaker 1: The last five or six games it was a problem
- 13:46Speaker 1: they couldn't cover a kick because they couldn't kick the
- 13:49Speaker 1: ball beyond the five yard line. Yeah. I think whoever
- 13:52Speaker 1: the punter is next year, or if they replace Folk,
- 13:56Speaker 1: who knows, I don't know, they're going to be able
- 13:58Speaker 1: to kick the ball into the end zone again. And
- 14:00Speaker 1: that's not going to be an issue anything. That's true,
- 14:01Speaker 1: But I think if you have good special teams, good
- 14:04Speaker 1: reliable special teams, there are times where you know the
- 14:07Speaker 1: receiver on the other team, you know the kick returner
- 14:09Speaker 1: on the other team may not be that dynamic, and
- 14:11Speaker 1: you say, you know what, let's kick it. Try to
- 14:13Speaker 1: get it inside the five, and let's try to you know,
- 14:16Speaker 1: get them short of the of the twenty five. You know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: if you have good, reliable if if you if you don't,
- 14:22Speaker 1: if you can't rely on your team, then you hope
- 14:24Speaker 1: your kicker can kick touchbacks every time. I think there
- 14:27Speaker 1: are strategic times in games where if you have reliable
- 14:33Speaker 1: special teams you can do things, you know, instead of
- 14:35Speaker 1: just punting it out of balance or kicking it in
- 14:37Speaker 1: the end zone. And when you don't, you put yourself
- 14:40Speaker 1: at a disadvantage in those plays where you don't have options.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You know. I don't want to like say that, oh,
- 14:48Speaker 1: special teams are to make a break for team. It's not.
- 14:51Speaker 1: It's not, but it's good to have. It helps to
- 14:54Speaker 1: have good special teams, I mean, especially on a middling team,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and I think it hurts to have bad special teams
- 14:59Speaker 1: in general. Role like that you have three kick returns,
- 15:02Speaker 1: a block punt, that's kind of rageous, you know, a
- 15:04Speaker 1: long part return that Baltimore had like that, those those
- 15:08Speaker 1: are places that are and on top of that, really
- 15:10Speaker 1: stupid penalties you know on you know, if you know
- 15:13Speaker 1: it's fourth down, they're punting and all of a sudden
- 15:15Speaker 1: you give him the first down. You know that that
- 15:18Speaker 1: now that you could you know, that's coaching as well,
- 15:21Speaker 1: which we hope will get better with Judge, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: at least having a hand in in helping out with
- 15:27Speaker 1: special teams. I do wonder how much he's going to
- 15:29Speaker 1: have a hand in and you know, is it cam
- 15:31Speaker 1: Acord's job. And I also just think it's kind of
- 15:34Speaker 1: funny because we're really talking about covering kicks because you
- 15:37Speaker 1: have Marcus Jones. I think everybody probably feels pretty good
- 15:39Speaker 1: about where Marcus Jones, you know, where his trajectory is
- 15:43Speaker 1: as a kick returner and a punt returner. So you know,
- 15:45Speaker 1: it is just a little strange to get like all
- 15:48Speaker 1: worked up about covering the kicks because part of it
- 15:50Speaker 1: is is pretty good and I think, you know, Marcus
- 15:52Speaker 1: Jones is at least a positive aspect of it. But
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, what are they going to do a punter?
- 15:56Speaker 1: You know, is that a position. I feel like in
- 15:58Speaker 1: the past they've drafted rookies right and just stuck him
- 16:00Speaker 1: in there and letting him go. I mean, is that's
- 16:02Speaker 1: pretty much the Bailey what was he like a sixth rounder?
- 16:04Speaker 1: They'll find up, you know, a fifth Yeah, I mean,
- 16:08Speaker 1: even if they don't draft one, they'll they'll get up.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Somebody will be punting for the Patriots this year. I
- 16:14Speaker 1: can get but it's all part of this. Like I'm
- 16:18Speaker 1: sorry if I'm not going to be concerned about who's
- 16:20Speaker 1: going to replace Jake Bailey. Yeah, somebody will just hope
- 16:23Speaker 1: they're all the same. You know, someone's gonna do it
- 16:24Speaker 1: and it's not gonna be an issue. He just hope
- 16:26Speaker 1: he can average over forty five yards, don't kick it backwards, yeah,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and don't drop a snap and you know, can once
- 16:33Speaker 1: in a while drop it inside the town. Yeah when
- 16:35Speaker 1: you mean yeah, you know, I mean, yeah, there's very
- 16:38Speaker 1: little difference between the best and the worst. Yeah, you know, now,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I will say that. You know, for example, that Super
- 16:46Speaker 1: Bowl we won against the Rams in nineteen Um, I
- 16:50Speaker 1: think punting was huge for us, right, I mean that
- 16:52Speaker 1: was and then and then they caught him next year
- 16:54Speaker 1: but that he had a great game, you know, in
- 16:57Speaker 1: such a field position, how important he thought it was.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I no, but I think he stood out in that.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I was shocked by that. I mean, this is I mean,
- 17:05Speaker 1: it's just you know, you're talking about punters here, but
- 17:07Speaker 1: I mean that was like something where I'm like, why
- 17:09Speaker 1: because everyone talked about how great the Super Bowl was,
- 17:11Speaker 1: You're just like the punting stood out to you. Which
- 17:15Speaker 1: stood out to me was the three and ounce they
- 17:16Speaker 1: forced after the punts. It's just like, but on top
- 17:21Speaker 1: up a ninety yard punt return, I mean, ninety yard
- 17:23Speaker 1: drive after that punt. No one's talking about what a
- 17:25Speaker 1: great job. I know, but I think consistently looking at
- 17:28Speaker 1: that long field affected folds whatever is cough yeah right.
- 17:33Speaker 1: They took over in the fifty. They couldn't move the ball.
- 17:36Speaker 1: The PH's defense dominated the game. I heard about the
- 17:39Speaker 1: special team's thing in the mail bag. So my long
- 17:42Speaker 1: answer to this question is is in written form because
- 17:45Speaker 1: some people this is driving me nuts, because, to be
- 17:49Speaker 1: honest with you, it's it's flat out lying to the
- 17:52Speaker 1: fan base that this is like a big problem for
- 17:54Speaker 1: the way that they build the It's lying like they're
- 17:57Speaker 1: lying to the fan base because they're there core special teamers.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I I did the math, I brought the receipts. The
- 18:03Speaker 1: core special teamers take up two point five percent of
- 18:05Speaker 1: the cap two point five percent, which is the equivalent
- 18:08Speaker 1: of Riley Reef. So what we're getting ourselves all worked
- 18:12Speaker 1: up about, money wise, is the equivalent of Riley Reef.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Who's gonna be Okay, I'm gonna just a backup spot.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I'm not even done, but like that's just what about what?
- 18:21Speaker 1: What about roster spots? Okay, so roster spots. When's the
- 18:25Speaker 1: last time that you got to a game, Fred and
- 18:27Speaker 1: the game day and actives came out, not not the
- 18:29Speaker 1: guys that were hurt, the guys that were healthy scratches,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and you said, dang, if Sean Wade was active in
- 18:34Speaker 1: this game, the Patriots probably would have won. I'm just
- 18:37Speaker 1: right right like that that never had But keep going,
- 18:41Speaker 1: How is that short sighted? Because gave me one time
- 18:43Speaker 1: that you've looked at that and said, oh what, it's
- 18:45Speaker 1: not about who's training, it's about who got cut. And
- 18:49Speaker 1: I don't know the answers to those. I just I
- 18:52Speaker 1: just don't think that that. You know, how does that
- 18:54Speaker 1: impact when they would when they were trotting. Uh, you
- 18:57Speaker 1: know that's the wide receivers out there, you know, two
- 18:59Speaker 1: and three years ago. And I don't think the guy's
- 19:02Speaker 1: any good, But I know other people argue with me
- 19:04Speaker 1: all the time. Could Braxton Barrios have developed into a
- 19:07Speaker 1: player for you? I think he stinks, But a lot
- 19:10Speaker 1: of a lot of my male bed they had spot
- 19:12Speaker 1: for Braxon barriers and that cut out by Gunnarochevsky. They
- 19:14Speaker 1: cut him for a special teamer. They cut him for
- 19:17Speaker 1: the same guy. They cut him for a guy who
- 19:18Speaker 1: was better returning kicks. They thought that's what Barrios would
- 19:22Speaker 1: have been doing right, and he could have been a
- 19:24Speaker 1: receiver could but he just failed. So he could have
- 19:29Speaker 1: trade Nixon a special team or over the wide receiver
- 19:32Speaker 1: and they were having they were both special teams. Those
- 19:35Speaker 1: two guys, I don't think anything a barrier, Yeah, but
- 19:38Speaker 1: if you caught But if you think those two guys
- 19:40Speaker 1: are equal, I don't know. If I can't help you.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Two guys who were core special teamers hoping that they
- 19:45Speaker 1: could be wide receivers and one and one guy was
- 19:49Speaker 1: a returner and a wide receiver and the other guy
- 19:51Speaker 1: is just so maybe off his face. So maybe you
- 19:53Speaker 1: picked the wrong guy, a special team or guy. But
- 19:56Speaker 1: Matthew Slater is not the reason why Braxon Barrios they
- 19:59Speaker 1: have a rosters. See this is where I disagree with Fred.
- 20:02Speaker 1: It's not about roster spots. I think every team has
- 20:04Speaker 1: guys that just play special teams. Every team does. I
- 20:07Speaker 1: just don't think that every team has veteran guys in
- 20:10Speaker 1: those roles that make I think Matthew Slater money is significant.
- 20:14Speaker 1: You guys don't. Well, here's what I here's what I
- 20:16Speaker 1: don't care what the percentage is. It's too high. Here's
- 20:18Speaker 1: what I will say. If you are gonna invest whatever
- 20:21Speaker 1: that relative number is, if you are going to invest
- 20:24Speaker 1: veteran roster spots in money in special teams, they better
- 20:27Speaker 1: be better than they were last year. That's a fair point.
- 20:30Speaker 1: You know, that's a fair point. Better be at the
- 20:33Speaker 1: top five of the league every year. But the guy
- 20:36Speaker 1: goes on the radio for me anyway, every single day,
- 20:38Speaker 1: he goes on the radio and screams at the top
- 20:40Speaker 1: of his lungs that the cap is crap, the cap
- 20:43Speaker 1: doesn't matter, what money doesn't matter. I've been telling you
- 20:45Speaker 1: this for a decade. And then when they sign of
- 20:50Speaker 1: your moves, there's the moves. They're not gonna They're not
- 20:55Speaker 1: looking at it and saying, Chris board is keeping tell
- 20:58Speaker 1: me that they don't have the cap space to do stuff.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Who tells you that? Patriots? Who Bill BELI tells me
- 21:04Speaker 1: that they were the lowest in the spending, Like he's
- 21:07Speaker 1: the one that uses to spending is in cash And
- 21:09Speaker 1: now now we're getting into the motion. The coach uses
- 21:11Speaker 1: it as a crutch. So the only time that I
- 21:14Speaker 1: reacting as the only time that I've heard Bill use
- 21:17Speaker 1: it as a crutch is in twenty twenty when he
- 21:18Speaker 1: said that I can read your backup press conference from
- 21:22Speaker 1: what it was was that the that was cash spending.
- 21:24Speaker 1: That's not cap right, two different things. So I know
- 21:27Speaker 1: that you don't think money counts. I think Bill's telling
- 21:30Speaker 1: you what does You can disagree. I know that you
- 21:33Speaker 1: know more you can disagree with him. I know, but pa,
- 21:36Speaker 1: but he said it not he did say it, but
- 21:40Speaker 1: more that has different with the cap money. I'm talking
- 21:43Speaker 1: about money. I always talk about money, but there's no
- 21:46Speaker 1: reason to pay you a guy covering kicks to play
- 21:49Speaker 1: ten plays a game one point five million dollars to
- 21:52Speaker 1: do it, okay, but you should be making five by
- 21:55Speaker 1: doing that. You are not. You are not prohibiting yourself.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I'm spending a lot of money on a player like
- 22:02Speaker 1: Jerry Judy or Hopkins. But I think that is the
- 22:04Speaker 1: result if they talk about it after the fact, well
- 22:08Speaker 1: we're too tight, we can't do it cash because they
- 22:10Speaker 1: use it as a crutch. Well, teams, that's what Felger
- 22:14Speaker 1: are complaining. But but cash spending is not the same
- 22:17Speaker 1: as I know, against the cap. I know it's not
- 22:20Speaker 1: you know, but every team is up against the cap
- 22:22Speaker 1: at the end of every year. But when Bill says
- 22:24Speaker 1: we were the lowest in you know, cash spending, he's
- 22:27Speaker 1: not talking about the cap. I understand that, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: but it all counts. And because he you know, invested
- 22:33Speaker 1: in you know, a few special teamers, that didn't mean
- 22:36Speaker 1: he couldn't get them. They made a decision not I
- 22:39Speaker 1: know what. I totally agree. Yeah, and that's why. Yeah,
- 22:43Speaker 1: but it's not because they signs. Well, I'm not saying
- 22:47Speaker 1: because because they didn't want to spend a lot have
- 22:49Speaker 1: budget and they hit the budget. However they do it.
- 22:52Speaker 1: It's it's not even it's not even that, Paul, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 1: and I'm sure you're right. Money has everything to do
- 22:58Speaker 1: with it, but it's it's that precentage of the cap
- 23:01Speaker 1: that they're willing to give to individuals. It's just kissed Freddy.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I'm one hundred percent that might be an outdated philosophy
- 23:08Speaker 1: because the cap goes up so much every year anyway,
- 23:11Speaker 1: you never, you know, it gets to how much the
- 23:13Speaker 1: owner really wants to dip into cash cash it. You know,
- 23:19Speaker 1: it has nothing to do with with the uh, the cap.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I agree, I'm one percent with you. I was saying, yeah,
- 23:26Speaker 1: I'm one hundred percent with you. So and at the
- 23:29Speaker 1: same time that all of this stuff is going one way,
- 23:33Speaker 1: special teams are going the other way. The league is
- 23:36Speaker 1: legislating them out and they're not adjusting in any way,
- 23:39Speaker 1: shape or form. Yeah, well, you know, I know, it's
- 23:42Speaker 1: pennies on the dollar and you don't have to worry
- 23:44Speaker 1: about it. I think it matters. Yeah, you guys don't.
- 23:48Speaker 1: That's okay. We don't all have to agree on everything.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I mean, there's so many, you know times, even when
- 23:53Speaker 1: Brady was here and where you know, you had that
- 23:56Speaker 1: special team's play that sparked a game or turned the
- 23:59Speaker 1: game around down or you know you forced to fumble
- 24:02Speaker 1: on it. You know, when you're trying to come from
- 24:04Speaker 1: behind on a punt and you got the ball back,
- 24:06Speaker 1: so you get you know, you know that extra possession.
- 24:09Speaker 1: It makes a difference. It does. And they did that
- 24:12Speaker 1: last year from Buffalo too, and you know what happened.
- 24:14Speaker 1: They lost, Like we forget about those plays. But we
- 24:19Speaker 1: forget so you can you can name it and it
- 24:22Speaker 1: you know, an instance, but it just it. It does
- 24:25Speaker 1: matter to have good special teams play. It does. Sorry
- 24:30Speaker 1: if you say so. I would like to the only
- 24:33Speaker 1: special teams player that really impacts wins and losses. If
- 24:35Speaker 1: you got a field goal kicker who can't make one. Yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 1: I would like to get rid of kicking in football.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I really would. It's well they have you got your wish.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I mean the especially when you play outdoors in the Northeast,
- 24:49Speaker 1: I think you need good You need good special team play,
- 24:53Speaker 1: you know, because even if you have a good kicker,
- 24:56Speaker 1: you know, the wind starts kicking up whether you're not
- 24:58Speaker 1: going to be able to get it in the end
- 25:00Speaker 1: zone consistently in November, December all the time, so you
- 25:03Speaker 1: have to be ready when you can't. This is a
- 25:06Speaker 1: line too with like the team and your point now
- 25:08Speaker 1: plays that they made, you know, the player came to
- 25:10Speaker 1: mind was the Cleveland twenty thirteen on side recovery and
- 25:12Speaker 1: then they ended up winning. It's like that's a lot
- 25:16Speaker 1: to ask for, Like can you just ask for special
- 25:18Speaker 1: teams that don't screw up and they don't have to
- 25:20Speaker 1: make a huge play, but they just don't, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 1: like they just don't. Like last year was so intense.
- 25:24Speaker 1: That's true too, that you know, you had game changing
- 25:27Speaker 1: plays and I mean nothing is a worse example than
- 25:29Speaker 1: that last week in Buffalo where right off the snap,
- 25:32Speaker 1: you know it's it's already, You're already in the hole.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So I don't know, I just I do think though
- 25:36Speaker 1: that a little bit of a cautionary tale last year
- 25:39Speaker 1: of you know, I mean, in a way you're playing, Hey,
- 25:41Speaker 1: we're playing DeMarcus Mitchell where we went and got Riley Webb. Hey,
- 25:44Speaker 1: we got rookies playing special teams. These are guys, you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: somewhat to Paul's point of guys that aren't really you know,
- 25:49Speaker 1: going to have a major investment. And you know, I
- 25:51Speaker 1: do think that you saw and they make a commitment
- 25:55Speaker 1: to it and they spend a lot of time with it.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Brendan Schooler and DeMarcus Mitchell. Last year we all saw
- 26:00Speaker 1: it every day at training camp. It was Matthew Slater
- 26:03Speaker 1: one oh one, like, yeah, that's I think that's awesome.
- 26:07Speaker 1: I'm not telling you to ignore special teams and let
- 26:09Speaker 1: the other team return kicks and block punts. That's how
- 26:14Speaker 1: I want to do it, though. I want to get
- 26:16Speaker 1: young guys identified and have them do it, and then
- 26:20Speaker 1: when they get four years in the league and they
- 26:22Speaker 1: become UFA's you say thank you. If you're not a
- 26:25Speaker 1: guy who can play defense for me, Brendan Schooler, you
- 26:28Speaker 1: can go somewhere else and make them, you know, one
- 26:30Speaker 1: point five somewhere and I'm going to take another guy
- 26:34Speaker 1: and do the same thing that I did with you.
- 26:36Speaker 1: That's what I want to do. Yeah. Sure, one guy
- 26:39Speaker 1: like Matthew Slater, who's inspirational and let's face it, his
- 26:43Speaker 1: value is far more off the field than on the field. Fine. Absolutely,
- 26:49Speaker 1: do we have to have five of them, which they've
- 26:51Speaker 1: had in the past. Maybe they don't have that anymore,
- 26:54Speaker 1: but they have, you know, with the Brandon Kings and
- 26:57Speaker 1: the Larry Iszos and the garage Cherry's the world like.
- 27:00Speaker 1: They've had a lot of those guys over the years,
- 27:03Speaker 1: a lot, and I think it's paid off for them. Okay,
- 27:06Speaker 1: I think Tom Brady paid off for them. That's where
- 27:08Speaker 1: we disagree. Okay. I think there were games like I
- 27:11Speaker 1: don't think you win games without Tom Brady. I think
- 27:15Speaker 1: even with Tom Brady here, you know, and I'm not
- 27:17Speaker 1: a savant like you, Paul, that there were games where
- 27:20Speaker 1: key special teams plays sparked a win or a comeback
- 27:25Speaker 1: or whatever. Troy Brown in the AFC Championship game against
- 27:27Speaker 1: Pittsburgh sure doesn't matter, right, Oh, it turns of fun
- 27:31Speaker 1: for a touchdown in the title game. Again, I'm just
- 27:36Speaker 1: saying the Patriots didn't make the playoffs last year because
- 27:39Speaker 1: of special teams. I didn't say. It's like saying the problems.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I didn't say that. Who said that? I don't know
- 27:45Speaker 1: who said that? Who said that? Strong man? It doesn't
- 27:49Speaker 1: Should I do it? Should I do it? It was
- 27:55Speaker 1: a fact hereabout special when it costs the layoffs last year? Yeah? Yeah,
- 28:01Speaker 1: that in the two fifty yard touchdown passes by Josh
- 28:04Speaker 1: and Allen cost you the bills. Okay, I didn't say that,
- 28:06Speaker 1: but it was a factor. Though it was a factor.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Of course, these plays are big plays. I'm not I'm
- 28:13Speaker 1: not dismissing special teams at all, Like, don't take it
- 28:17Speaker 1: to the Andy Hart like, yeah, absurd, absurd. Yeah, I'm
- 28:21Speaker 1: not telling you that when you get a punt blocked
- 28:24Speaker 1: and you let them return a kick and you run
- 28:26Speaker 1: into the kicker to negate a fourth thound stop in
- 28:28Speaker 1: the fourth that those plays don't count. Yeah, I'm just
- 28:31Speaker 1: saying they're not that big a deal in the grand
- 28:33Speaker 1: scheme of a season. Special teams do not take that
- 28:37Speaker 1: much of a precedence. I think the concern that I
- 28:41Speaker 1: agree with you that if you can develop younger guys
- 28:44Speaker 1: that are cheap on rookie contracts to play those roles,
- 28:46Speaker 1: it's better for your football team. But some of those
- 28:48Speaker 1: guys last year were right in the middle of a
- 28:51Speaker 1: lot of the problems. You know, Pierre Strong, not to
- 28:53Speaker 1: throw him under the bus, but he runs into the
- 28:55Speaker 1: punter against against Minnesota as a rookie and a score
- 29:00Speaker 1: touchdown right, right, And you know, a guy like that's
- 29:03Speaker 1: a good that's a good pier. As many plays as
- 29:07Speaker 1: he made, he also made some bone headed penalties, right
- 29:10Speaker 1: and Yeah, Pier Strong was also at the point of
- 29:13Speaker 1: attack on the second kickoff return against Buffalo, and then
- 29:16Speaker 1: he got benched afterwards. You know, I'm not saying that
- 29:18Speaker 1: that made or braid their season or anything like that,
- 29:21Speaker 1: but I think sometimes, yeah, it'd be great if you
- 29:24Speaker 1: could have young Schooler I think is a really good
- 29:26Speaker 1: young special teamer, but he's also focusing solely on special teams,
- 29:29Speaker 1: whereas with Pierre is Strong and they're trying to develop
- 29:31Speaker 1: him at running back and they're trying to develop him
- 29:33Speaker 1: in the kicking game. And clearly he didn't have listen,
- 29:37Speaker 1: he made some mistakes, There's no question about it. I
- 29:40Speaker 1: want guys like that. I want guys like ray Kwa
- 29:43Speaker 1: McMillan and Jabrill Peppers my backup players who can actually play,
- 29:48Speaker 1: to be my special teamers. Now, did it work last year? No,
- 29:51Speaker 1: those guys were. Jabrill Peppers is still chasing nahem hinz right.
- 29:55Speaker 1: He didn't He couldn't make a play. But I would
- 29:57Speaker 1: rather have that than Cody Davis. Well, to be fair,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I think Chris Board is that. I don't think Chris
- 30:04Speaker 1: Board is in the Cody Davis category. Chris Board has
- 30:07Speaker 1: actually played snaps on defense, so he's he is your
- 30:10Speaker 1: fourth or fifth linebacker slash if he can. If he
- 30:13Speaker 1: can do that and then push somebody else off the
- 30:15Speaker 1: roster so I don't have to keep then that, then
- 30:17Speaker 1: I'm fine with that, Absolutely fine. But if he's just
- 30:21Speaker 1: a special teams guy like Brandon Bolden could play offense
- 30:25Speaker 1: if he needed to. You didn't want him out there
- 30:27Speaker 1: all the time, but he could play offense. That's what
- 30:30Speaker 1: I want my core special teams to be. I think
- 30:32Speaker 1: Chris board is more Brandon Bolden than he is Cody Davis,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and just to be no problem with no problem with
- 30:38Speaker 1: that signing. Cody Davis is still Cody Davis is still
- 30:41Speaker 1: no And I know we still have those those those
- 30:44Speaker 1: kinds of guys, and I don't think we have as
- 30:47Speaker 1: many as we used to. So it's not something that
- 30:49Speaker 1: I stay up at night won't wonder about. But I
- 30:52Speaker 1: do think that it's just funny to me that we're
- 30:57Speaker 1: all clamoring for DeAndre Hopkins or some thing and we're
- 31:02Speaker 1: resigning backup linebackers and taking a special team ace away
- 31:07Speaker 1: from another team. And I hear that, but you can
- 31:10Speaker 1: still get Hopkins. That's not gonna stop you for the
- 31:13Speaker 1: only thing that's gonna stop you from getting Hopkins is
- 31:15Speaker 1: yourself if you don't want to pony up whatever the
- 31:18Speaker 1: compensation is to him and to the Cardinals. That's the
- 31:22Speaker 1: only thing that's gonna stop you. It's it's not signing
- 31:25Speaker 1: Chris Board. But what if they think it's too much money?
- 31:29Speaker 1: That's that's like I said, they can only the only
- 31:33Speaker 1: thing that's going to stop them is themselves. That they
- 31:35Speaker 1: don't they're not willing to spend the money. It's not
- 31:38Speaker 1: because they signed Chris Board and Cody Davis and whoever
- 31:41Speaker 1: the hell else they're gonna have to sign a new punter. No,
- 31:45Speaker 1: they should still have all the resources they need to
- 31:47Speaker 1: make those those those moves, right, I mean right now,
- 31:49Speaker 1: Like I hear that, I don't know. I'm hearing all
- 31:51Speaker 1: these different Maybe Miguel Kind tells, but they only have
- 31:54Speaker 1: twelve million left to spend or something like that against
- 31:57Speaker 1: the cap. I don't know. It means nothing right now,
- 32:00Speaker 1: because you can redo contracts and everything like that. So
- 32:03Speaker 1: you know, whatever that number is, it's not it. You
- 32:07Speaker 1: can manipulate that. You can make it. But you guys
- 32:10Speaker 1: all go to Hunter Henry and say, hey, well you
- 32:12Speaker 1: know moving on from the special teams thing. But you
- 32:14Speaker 1: guys all in favor of Hopkins. Yeah, I'd rather get
- 32:17Speaker 1: Judy Younger. No, I would rather get Judy too because
- 32:20Speaker 1: of that. But I mean, no question, do you guys
- 32:22Speaker 1: want Hopkins if that's if that's if that's it, Like,
- 32:26Speaker 1: if that's the only option, then that's only that perfectly
- 32:29Speaker 1: said right there. If that's my only option, I'll take it.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Otherwise I don't really want him, but he I mean,
- 32:35Speaker 1: I totally recognize that that you're number one. Like, I
- 32:38Speaker 1: can't be a fraud and say I'm clamoring for number
- 32:40Speaker 1: one receiver. Hopkins is available, not one, number one, And
- 32:44Speaker 1: I know you know you'll hear that he's absolutely the
- 32:47Speaker 1: number one receiver. I guess it's just wishful thinking, you know.
- 32:50Speaker 1: And these guys get paid a lot of money because
- 32:54Speaker 1: of it. But you just love to get that one
- 32:56Speaker 1: guy that's got you know, pure speed, who can win,
- 33:01Speaker 1: like not just fifty fifty, but just beat the guy
- 33:04Speaker 1: at the line and get open. That's not I don't
- 33:06Speaker 1: know if he has but he has the presence, you know,
- 33:08Speaker 1: And that's and like and I don't even want to
- 33:10Speaker 1: put it through the this organization needs a guy right now.
- 33:13Speaker 1: But I put it to it's gonna put butts in
- 33:16Speaker 1: training camp seats if DeAndre Hopkins is out there, I
- 33:18Speaker 1: want that guy who immediately recognizes I got my guy
- 33:22Speaker 1: beat and raises his hand. Yeah, going down. But I
- 33:27Speaker 1: do think that there is the potential. I'm not saying
- 33:29Speaker 1: twenty touchdowns, but like, I think there is the potential
- 33:32Speaker 1: that Hopkins, who is roughly the same age as Randy
- 33:34Speaker 1: Moss when they acquired him in oh seven, has one
- 33:37Speaker 1: or two great years left in him at that level
- 33:40Speaker 1: of like an all Pro receiver. But he I watched
- 33:44Speaker 1: all of his catches from last year yesterday and just
- 33:47Speaker 1: in case, that's what I like to do it, just
- 33:48Speaker 1: just in case film and that the guys are draped
- 33:52Speaker 1: all over him like they just you know. And sometimes
- 33:54Speaker 1: he makes these plays that what about in the red zone,
- 33:56Speaker 1: can't separate same thing, you know. And and I think
- 33:59Speaker 1: some of the things that you see with his routes
- 34:01Speaker 1: or if he's got off coverage, like he'll get up
- 34:03Speaker 1: on the toes and snap off the route and he'll
- 34:05Speaker 1: create separation that way. But in terms of running by anybody,
- 34:09Speaker 1: like those days are are done for him. He's based
- 34:13Speaker 1: off of what he showed last year. So you're getting
- 34:16Speaker 1: another one of those receivers that wins at the catchpoint
- 34:19Speaker 1: with body control and great hands, and he's got all
- 34:21Speaker 1: of that him. He's one of the best outside the
- 34:23Speaker 1: number receivers in the league. Still, there's no doubt about it.
- 34:26Speaker 1: But I would prefer not just because of age, but
- 34:30Speaker 1: also because of his separation ability a guy like Judy
- 34:33Speaker 1: because he gets open. You know, he's somebody that can
- 34:35Speaker 1: create five yards of separation because and that's what Bill says,
- 34:38Speaker 1: what makes a good receiver a guy him get open
- 34:40Speaker 1: and catch it. I mean, it's I've always liked happen.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I mean he's been so productive, Yeah, he has. I've
- 34:46Speaker 1: always liked him. I think he competes. I think some people,
- 34:50Speaker 1: you know, watch the Monday night game and he had
- 34:53Speaker 1: the ridiculous fumble where he didn't even get hitty at
- 34:56Speaker 1: the ball and he basically dropped it, and they're like, well,
- 35:00Speaker 1: I don't want that guy because he doesn't compete. And
- 35:02Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, watch the rest of his career.
- 35:04Speaker 1: If you think he doesn't compete, Colt McCoy throwing it
- 35:06Speaker 1: to him. Yeah, I think there was you know, like
- 35:10Speaker 1: the third play of the game or whatever it was,
- 35:11Speaker 1: their quarterback goes down. Where do you think that those
- 35:13Speaker 1: guys went that night? At four four and eight? We
- 35:16Speaker 1: just lost our quarterback. You know we're gonna lose this game. Yeah, yeah, No,
- 35:21Speaker 1: I like him. I mean, I again, I don't want
- 35:22Speaker 1: to put a lot into like the Amazon show, but
- 35:24Speaker 1: you know, just getting a sense to him and his mom,
- 35:27Speaker 1: who has you know, a crazy story. It's just there's
- 35:29Speaker 1: a lot to like there. As as a guy. I've
- 35:31Speaker 1: always liked Hopkins. I've always it's also just getting to
- 35:34Speaker 1: the point now where he might actually be a bargain right.
- 35:36Speaker 1: You know, that's my whole point. The trade compensation is
- 35:39Speaker 1: not going to be as much as he might have thought,
- 35:41Speaker 1: and he reworks the contract to make it work on
- 35:44Speaker 1: the books, and it's what, I mean, what do we
- 35:46Speaker 1: but just what are we doing? We know we need
- 35:48Speaker 1: to know him, Mac. We know Bill is winding down.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I mean, he's in his seventies. He's not gonna be
- 35:51Speaker 1: here forever. It's just you know, there needs to be
- 35:53Speaker 1: a little bit of immediacy. And I mean just to
- 35:55Speaker 1: kind of tie this in because I saw the clip
- 35:57Speaker 1: again today a teddy, you know, saying that he saw
- 36:00Speaker 1: operating like he still has Tom, Like I just feel
- 36:02Speaker 1: like he's operating like he's always operated. And that is
- 36:05Speaker 1: you know, the whole time Tom was here was we
- 36:06Speaker 1: gotta get him that number one. I mean, we're saying
- 36:08Speaker 1: the same things right now we said when Tom was
- 36:10Speaker 1: here and the special teams thing, it's the same bill.
- 36:13Speaker 1: But that in a nutshell is might worry because you know,
- 36:17Speaker 1: and I looked at like at the end of last year,
- 36:21Speaker 1: the twenty one season, when they lost in the playoffs
- 36:23Speaker 1: forty seven seventeen, and he had that quote that lives on,
- 36:29Speaker 1: you know for a couple of reasons, one of which
- 36:31Speaker 1: that he called something that happened twelve hours before last year.
- 36:36Speaker 1: But he said, we have to find out if that
- 36:38Speaker 1: was a bad night or if that's what we were
- 36:41Speaker 1: that was the least competitive game we had all of
- 36:43Speaker 1: last year, he said, based on the way they went
- 36:48Speaker 1: about their offseason. I think that he kave you was
- 36:50Speaker 1: answered he thought that was a bad night. I think
- 36:52Speaker 1: that most people who watched the last half of the year, No,
- 36:55Speaker 1: it wasn't a bad night. It was more indicative of
- 36:57Speaker 1: what the team was when they played against quality competition.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Fast forward a whole year now, and I think his
- 37:04Speaker 1: actions are telling you, what have they finished in defense?
- 37:06Speaker 1: Eighth in terms of points or whatever something like that. Hey, something,
- 37:10Speaker 1: give me a number. So I think eleventh and points
- 37:15Speaker 1: eighth in yours. Okay, So I think so far he's
- 37:19Speaker 1: telling you that I'm really good with my defense, Like, yeah, yeah,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I don't think that's smart. I don't think I would
- 37:26Speaker 1: be really good with the defense. I think every time
- 37:28Speaker 1: they played a team with a quarterback, they were powerless
- 37:30Speaker 1: and they had a hard time. And he's acting like,
- 37:36Speaker 1: I have the eighth I have the eighth best defense
- 37:38Speaker 1: in football. I don't have to worry about that without
- 37:40Speaker 1: also even worrying about the fact that he lost two
- 37:43Speaker 1: parts to his secondary. Now there's a whole draft to come,
- 37:46Speaker 1: and I get that there's a lot of stuff that's
- 37:48Speaker 1: still going to happen, but I worry. To your point, Mike,
- 37:53Speaker 1: this is the way he operated, and he thinks he
- 37:55Speaker 1: was right. I don't think he was right. I think
- 37:57Speaker 1: they you know, I didn't have to get a number
- 38:00Speaker 1: one receiver for Tom Brady because I'm that good. I
- 38:04Speaker 1: think it was well because Tom Brady elevated everybody around
- 38:07Speaker 1: him to a level they could win championships and beyond
- 38:10Speaker 1: the precipice of championships. With like Reche Caldwell as my
- 38:14Speaker 1: number one receiver, I can do it because I'm Tom Brady.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I don't think they have that luxury anymore. I don't
- 38:19Speaker 1: think he thinks it was because of Tom Brady. I
- 38:22Speaker 1: think he thinks we have the eighth best defense because
- 38:25Speaker 1: my son's running the defense, that we can shut these
- 38:28Speaker 1: guys down well. And I think two to the point,
- 38:30Speaker 1: it's it's it's about the whole middle class thing. And
- 38:33Speaker 1: I'm going to build the roster this way and we're not.
- 38:34Speaker 1: You know, it's it's I mean, and I just I
- 38:36Speaker 1: wonder if it's a lot too. And I think we're
- 38:39Speaker 1: valid in our hope that he might switch his philosophy.
- 38:42Speaker 1: But you know a head coach who's been doing this forever,
- 38:45Speaker 1: who gets to this point, is it asking a lot
- 38:47Speaker 1: to say, Yeah, you lost that quarterback you need you
- 38:50Speaker 1: need in your last whatever it is, five six, seven seasons,
- 38:53Speaker 1: you need to you need to reevaluate what you're doing,
- 38:55Speaker 1: and you need to change. It's a lot to ask
- 38:57Speaker 1: of anybody who's been doing a job for fifty years
- 38:59Speaker 1: and then got a change for the last five years,
- 39:01Speaker 1: do it a new way. So you know, it's your
- 39:04Speaker 1: thing that I always teach you about, right, you know, right, No,
- 39:07Speaker 1: like you and you still think that that that that
- 39:10Speaker 1: strong middle class was why they won all those titles. No,
- 39:13Speaker 1: And I think to the point with the Santa clause
- 39:15Speaker 1: that I still do believe in It's just that you
- 39:18Speaker 1: do need a team. And I don't want to get
- 39:19Speaker 1: into the Pioli thing, but I just speak from personal experience.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Of my best teams that I was on were teams
- 39:25Speaker 1: that were well constructed in terms of personalities and guy
- 39:28Speaker 1: we would maybe not the most talented guy's balance, but
- 39:30Speaker 1: but there was balanced and there was in the locker room.
- 39:32Speaker 1: You just had a feel for it. And I mean,
- 39:34Speaker 1: you know, and even just going to what mccordy had
- 39:36Speaker 1: to say about last year about there was never that
- 39:39Speaker 1: like true belief in the offense, like it's just impossible
- 39:42Speaker 1: weapons all this stuff you talk about to to generate
- 39:45Speaker 1: and that would never suggest like Daniel Snyder in like
- 39:47Speaker 1: the early two thousands, you know, just signing every big
- 39:50Speaker 1: name star that he could. That doesn't work now there's
- 39:54Speaker 1: a balance. You do have to find a mix. I
- 39:56Speaker 1: just feel like, especially if they want to win every year, Yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 1: I don't care about that. I just want to put
- 40:02Speaker 1: I want to put the best team on the field
- 40:03Speaker 1: that I can put on the field. But that doesn't
- 40:06Speaker 1: necessarily like, yeah, be easy to say, well, we're gonna
- 40:09Speaker 1: sign Hopkins and Judy, you know, like screw deciding between
- 40:14Speaker 1: the two of them like that. Don't like that. Stuff
- 40:18Speaker 1: doesn't always work. And I recognize that it's not about
- 40:21Speaker 1: putting together the best fantasy team that you can, but
- 40:24Speaker 1: it also ain't about just finding all the scrappy just
- 40:29Speaker 1: don't have the top of the roster talent. Yeah, Like,
- 40:31Speaker 1: I think this offseason has been pretty solid for filling
- 40:33Speaker 1: out eleven through fifty three on the roster, but the
- 40:37Speaker 1: top ten guys on the roster still don't stack up.
- 40:39Speaker 1: They don't have a number one ride receiver, they don't
- 40:42Speaker 1: really have a shutdown corner, they don't have a franchise
- 40:44Speaker 1: left tackle. Like those are those premium positions and you
- 40:47Speaker 1: can't draft them all at fourteen, so something has to
- 40:50Speaker 1: come in a different way. And if they go out
- 40:53Speaker 1: and they trade for Hopkins and then fourteen becomes Joey
- 40:56Speaker 1: Porter Junior, and now you do have a lockdown corner.
- 40:58Speaker 1: It becomes a Harris Johnson and you do have a
- 41:01Speaker 1: franchise left tackle, and like that's that's the whole thing
- 41:04Speaker 1: that they're still missing. They're missing the cherries on top.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I think they have a good roster eleven through fifty three.
- 41:09Speaker 1: That was another funny conversation your guys had, Paul. They
- 41:12Speaker 1: had an argument of what a hole is? What a hole? Yeah, Mazarati.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Mazarati said they have a lot of holes, and your
- 41:23Speaker 1: guys said, they don't have any holes because Felger is
- 41:26Speaker 1: steadfast that the roster is better. This is classic Felger.
- 41:29Speaker 1: He's setting them up to kick the crap out him.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Of course he's gonna tell you'll never be wrong. He's
- 41:33Speaker 1: gonna tell you how much more talented they are and
- 41:36Speaker 1: how underachieving they are, because that's what he loves to do. Yeah.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I want to go back to Paul's point though, because I,
- 41:41Speaker 1: you know, wrote a little summation yesterday and I felt
- 41:43Speaker 1: like I hate run it back, but it does. It
- 41:45Speaker 1: feels like they brought a lot of the defensive pieces back.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Mac Wilson, Ray qua mcmill A little bit of a
- 41:50Speaker 1: disappointment last year with those guys. We were all so
- 41:52Speaker 1: high on what they might contribute. You essentially swapped Jonathan
- 41:56Speaker 1: Jones for Jalen Mills, you know, for you know, the
- 41:58Speaker 1: lack of a better way to explain it. So, I
- 42:00Speaker 1: mean you still see that number one corner as a
- 42:02Speaker 1: as a whole, and how do you get to that
- 42:05Speaker 1: next level? Will these same kind of guys, will you
- 42:07Speaker 1: be surprised if they go heavy defense in the draft?
- 42:11Speaker 1: First three? Well, it's three. I mean, it's one of
- 42:14Speaker 1: the things I've told Evan, like I would love him
- 42:15Speaker 1: to write because I think we're all so focused on
- 42:17Speaker 1: the three positions he just nailed, which are oh tackle,
- 42:20Speaker 1: wide receiver, in cornerback, and for good reason. I mean,
- 42:23Speaker 1: I think you need a number one of all three
- 42:24Speaker 1: of those guys. But like my biggest question right now
- 42:27Speaker 1: is what's the shock pick at fourteen? You know, what
- 42:29Speaker 1: is the guy that we're all sleeping on? And I know,
- 42:32Speaker 1: a lineback. I think somebody came out with with what's
- 42:34Speaker 1: his name? The running back with Bijon today, What kind
- 42:37Speaker 1: of what kind of linebacker the one that we always
- 42:40Speaker 1: want the sidelines a sideline that guy doesn't exist. No,
- 42:44Speaker 1: it'd probably because that's a position that you got Judean.
- 42:51Speaker 1: He's over thirty, in the last year of his deal,
- 42:53Speaker 1: and you really don't have a third guy. I think
- 42:54Speaker 1: it's critically you get a third guy. I know they've
- 42:56Speaker 1: been kicking the tires on some of these veteran guys,
- 42:59Speaker 1: but you know, just to Paul's point, explain to me
- 43:02Speaker 1: why we're gonna be able to stop Josh Allen next year, Like,
- 43:04Speaker 1: explain that to me, like I'm three. That's what you know.
- 43:06Speaker 1: That's what I want to know, because until you take
- 43:09Speaker 1: the realistically and now Aaron Rodgers in that mix too,
- 43:11Speaker 1: like what's your plan for them? I think number one
- 43:13Speaker 1: corner is absolutely critically Like the answer seems to be like,
- 43:16Speaker 1: we hope they're not as good like and dead. I'm
- 43:20Speaker 1: dead serious. I think that we look around and I'm
- 43:22Speaker 1: not necessarily saying we as in bill and football, I
- 43:26Speaker 1: mean like sort of the reaction is like, well, the
- 43:28Speaker 1: Bills are on the way down. I mean they had
- 43:30Speaker 1: their windows right, you know, they went up and their
- 43:33Speaker 1: windows gonna start to close. They're not gonna stink. No
- 43:35Speaker 1: one's saying that, but people are saying their best days
- 43:38Speaker 1: might be behind them, all right, If they have Josh Allen,
- 43:40Speaker 1: they'll be fine. So basically our hope is to wait
- 43:42Speaker 1: it out and hope everybody comes back to us as
- 43:44Speaker 1: treadwall hurt. Like to Evan's point, I thought, you know
- 43:49Speaker 1: Evan's point about the roster, right, I think it's it's
- 43:56Speaker 1: the top ten people who ended the season on the roster.
- 44:00Speaker 1: There's no additions to it. And you probably took you mean,
- 44:05Speaker 1: at least one away, maybe two. Right. You know mccordy
- 44:09Speaker 1: was one of the ten best players in the roster, right, Yeah,
- 44:12Speaker 1: so you took one away. I don't really think you
- 44:14Speaker 1: add now. I think that maybe maybe Juju is one
- 44:18Speaker 1: of the top ten players in the run now and
- 44:20Speaker 1: he replaces Myers. Right, So, like every every guy they
- 44:25Speaker 1: added replace someone they lost of comparable value swaps. We
- 44:29Speaker 1: could have whole shows arguing how much of an upgrade
- 44:33Speaker 1: Ghisicki is and how much of an upgrade James Robinson is,
- 44:36Speaker 1: how much of an upgrade Juju is. I think you
- 44:38Speaker 1: can make a reasonable argument that they're all better or
- 44:41Speaker 1: they're all about the same. I certainly would say GAISICKI
- 44:44Speaker 1: is better than John do. I don't think that's like
- 44:47Speaker 1: an outrageous statement. Um, but I don't think it's like
- 44:51Speaker 1: the difference between Travis Kelsey and you know, rat whatever
- 44:56Speaker 1: his name is. You just can't You can't do it
- 44:58Speaker 1: all in the draft. You can't leave it all up
- 45:00Speaker 1: to the end of April. And that's why trading for
- 45:03Speaker 1: DeAndre Hopkins, even though he's not my first choice, it
- 45:07Speaker 1: fills a need, it fills a hole, It fills a
- 45:09Speaker 1: top end of the roster spot in the top ten
- 45:11Speaker 1: of that of that discussion, in my view, you know what,
- 45:14Speaker 1: the biggest upgrade has been backup tackle. Yeah. Yeah, because
- 45:19Speaker 1: I'm not who the starter at tackle is still, would
- 45:22Speaker 1: you what you're gonna come out with some depth? Probably?
- 45:24Speaker 1: I like the idea of Riley Reef and Calvin Anderson
- 45:27Speaker 1: over Yandney could choosed who's actually on an RFA tender. No,
- 45:31Speaker 1: I know, but I would feel better if whoever the
- 45:34Speaker 1: starting right tackle is, if Riley Reef had to go
- 45:37Speaker 1: in for would you give up DeVante Parker to get Hopkins? Yes, yeah,
- 45:42Speaker 1: I think that. I don't. I think those guys are
- 45:44Speaker 1: done hesitation there. Yeah, but we should mention that Damien
- 45:50Speaker 1: Harris signed with the Bills and are also signed who
- 45:55Speaker 1: did he sign? Now, he's the Damien har Is for
- 46:00Speaker 1: James Robinson one two though that one's dicey to me
- 46:04Speaker 1: as well, Like I think James Robins very similar player.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I think James Robinson has more passing game receiving upside certainly,
- 46:11Speaker 1: but he's got that Achilles that he just I mean,
- 46:13Speaker 1: like we're here, Oh, Damian Harris isn't available like Guy
- 46:16Speaker 1: blew out as Achilles like a year ago. Like that's
- 46:18Speaker 1: that's not available. Like Damien Harris has has a thigh bruise,
- 46:22Speaker 1: like that's that's a little different, especially at that position.
- 46:25Speaker 1: These are some boomer bust swings that they're taking Juju
- 46:28Speaker 1: in Myers out, Kaseki in, John Who out, and James
- 46:32Speaker 1: Robinson for Damian Harris. These swaps could either be home
- 46:35Speaker 1: runs or they could really I like all three players.
- 46:38Speaker 1: I do like them, but I can't deny that I'm
- 46:41Speaker 1: wondering if we just kind of shuffled the chairs around
- 46:43Speaker 1: a little bit. I don't think that with those three
- 46:46Speaker 1: over the three. Maybe it's better in one little area,
- 46:48Speaker 1: but it's not as good in another. Little area. Now,
- 46:50Speaker 1: it's better than losing those three and not replacing them. Yeah,
- 46:53Speaker 1: that's the one thing that I have to give them
- 46:54Speaker 1: is that last year they traded Jack Mason and they
- 46:57Speaker 1: let Ted Carriss walk and they waited to the draft
- 46:59Speaker 1: to replace them, and that's how we ended up with
- 47:01Speaker 1: Cole Strange. So this year, at least when they lost Myers,
- 47:04Speaker 1: they signed Juju immediately and they said, Okay, we're not
- 47:07Speaker 1: going to wait around and wait and fill that need
- 47:11Speaker 1: you later on in the draft or something like that.
- 47:13Speaker 1: So at least you don't go into the draft needing
- 47:15Speaker 1: that as well. You just need the cherry all right,
- 47:18Speaker 1: foods here. So we'll take a break. When we come back,
- 47:20Speaker 1: we'll dive into some of the other stuff going on
- 47:22Speaker 1: in the NFL. Name Lee La Mar Shappy, the Holder,
- 47:25Speaker 1: and Aaron Rodgers. We'll talk about some of that when

- 58:02Speaker 1: statistically like red zone like we saw it last week.
- 58:05Speaker 1: That was that was a terrible red zone defense too.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Didn't really matter, No that did. We got two red
- 58:09Speaker 1: zone touchdowns. Yes, so true. I mean like we need
- 58:13Speaker 1: to have an intervention. It's never good enough. Josh Uche,
- 58:17Speaker 1: I'm tired of getting sad. That was just as funny
- 58:21Speaker 1: today as it was yesterd zone. Well you know probably
- 58:24Speaker 1: you know they did they stopped him. I mean they
- 58:26Speaker 1: were able to score twice in the red zone. I
- 58:27Speaker 1: mean you don't go from like oh for seven to
- 58:30Speaker 1: like five for five, like it usually doesn't work. That week,
- 58:33Speaker 1: there was progress last week. They had two red zone touchdowns.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Alex tell Kevin he doesn't listen to me. Vin broke
- 58:39Speaker 1: like six tackles got it on one play that was
- 58:43Speaker 1: like the first play did we throw it into the
- 58:45Speaker 1: end zone really hard. Why do you, oh, style points, Fisk.
- 58:49Speaker 1: It's got to be a say you know what, you're

- 58:57Speaker 1: because you are a wanna be felgran Mass. You want
- 59:00Speaker 1: to find something to pick out now. I had they
- 59:03Speaker 1: had to come from twenty eight three down. I mean
- 59:05Speaker 1: they didn't. They didn't throw the ball together. They got
- 59:08Speaker 1: red zone scores, but they didn't throw it into the
- 59:10Speaker 1: lead right away in the Super Bowl. It's unacceptable. I
- 59:13Speaker 1: demand dominance and excellence. I perfect you. That's another great
- 59:17Speaker 1: moment from all right back here in Patriots on filter
- 59:21Speaker 1: at eight five five five hundred is the Ace ticket
- 59:24Speaker 1: hut line web radio at Patriots dot com is the
- 59:26Speaker 1: email address. We got some people holding on for quite
- 59:29Speaker 1: a bit, so let me get to them. We'll go
- 59:32Speaker 1: to Brian and Saint Louis. Brian, he said, the hell
- 59:36Speaker 1: with you? How about Noah in Oklahoma? What's up? Noah? Hey, guys,
- 59:41Speaker 1: what's going on? Hey? Thanks for holding on our problem.
- 59:46Speaker 1: I was just gonna see what you kind of thought, guys,
- 59:48Speaker 1: kind of thought about going to get Jerry Judy. You know,
- 59:50Speaker 1: he was at Alabama with Mac and Bill O'Brien, and
- 59:55Speaker 1: you know he knows Mac, and I feel like that
- 59:57Speaker 1: would be an. He's cheaper than the hop obviously you
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: know he's but yep, so tell me why I would
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: take I would take what was my number one target? Yeah?
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Why is he available? Because his contract is coming up? Okay,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: so they have to make the fifth year option decision
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: on him in May. He's a good going into year
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: four of his rookie deal. So you're in that that
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: zone of are we going to extend him or are
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: we going to try to get something more? The short
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: answer technically, he's not. They say he's not right, right,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: you know, so like Sean Payton gets there, right, and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: like why would he He's their best offensive player right now,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: isn't he? Yeah? Um, talking with the running back coming
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: off the injury, probably the best offense. So why do
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you know? That's what I'm monitoring, Like, why is he available?
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I don't think he's available. I don't think there's a
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: for right, And but if somebody basically there's some reporting
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: out of Dallas after the Brandon Cooks trade that Dallas
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: did put a call in to Denver about Jerry Judy,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: and Denver wanted their first round pick. So to me,
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: that says, if you blow us away with an offer
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: for Jerry Judy, then we'll listen. But it's gonna have
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: to take something significant for us to move him. So
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: if you're the Patriots, you're really trading fourteen for Jerry Judy.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Probably not, but I don't. I don't think forty six
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: alone is gonna get it done. Yeah, and it's gonna
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: you know, it's gonna be a lot of money. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, go ahead after Patricia. You know, we've
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: seen Mac regressed, and I think this is kind of
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: his Josh Allen year. You know, year three they went
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and guts the Fondig. You know, if we don't make
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: a move and get somebody, I don't think we're doing.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: It's hard to gauge Mac like that. Yeah, Okay, thanks, Noah,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I'll let it go. I looked at paul because Paula
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: is like, that's what's gonna happen. Well, I mean I
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: will say, just it's a preemptively this like, I mean,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: you know, you're three a quarterback, Like I don't care
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: who he's throwing the ball too. You need you need
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: to see some kind of progression in his game, and
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: I mean I think he gets a bit of a
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: pass last year, so there should be I mean, I
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: would hope a little bit more of a jump with
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: a competent offensive coordinator and system in place, so you know,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: even if they don't do anything else, and this is
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: the team I would, I would at least hope that
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: you see some kind of strides from Mac and maybe
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: who knows, pull a game out at the end. They
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: shouldn't win. Aldred's in North Carolina. Hey, Aldred, Hey, that's
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: aggressive foreign honk there. Yeah, he's definitely cleared out right there.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: You spot on man as usual with h with BB
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: he thinks it's too late, don't think and it ain't
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: sour done, you know, And I'm wrong with you. It's
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Tom Brady. He when you get mad all you want
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: to that's your team play there, but it's still number two.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Toy took it down to the field score or get
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: get your damn field. Good language, but never said it
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: was I don't want tea hop language just fine compared
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: to that girl from Miami last night on the ask,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: you don't want tea hop. No, no, it's thirty two.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I do. I did one in his prime. He's still
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: doing when video had him Houston and we could have
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: got him with Tom but nobody made that move. So
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: you know my thing is, you gotta stick around picking
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: on Tycoon. You're luck, you're trying to find out what
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: what Mac is. You need to find out what he
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: and then that's true at number fourteen, pick I'll go
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: up and get guns dollars bumping. Sorry, you need a corner,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: but y'all want Quinnon Johnson, I go up, get guns dollars.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: You need a corner us a number one corner. That
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: guy's gonna be I can't. I just got it right.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: I just can't imagine Gonzalez hangs on. No, I can't
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: like that type of They got him about Keen, they
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: got him Keen or he's a seventeen. I think Johnson
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: going to either twelve or you're going. I think Gonzalez
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: is gonna go one really high. I think Jeremiah had
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: him like six or something, but still behind Weatherspoon, which
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: I don't totally get, but yeah, Weatherspoon has flash Year
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: film than than Gonzalez, like more plays on the football.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: But Gonzalez is smooth, plays inside, plays outside. Man's like
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: he just does it all high light. He does it
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: all exactly sixty three and can run too. Yeah, you
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: can run like you got somebody shut down in corner
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: wide receivers. I hate coas Miami got two shut down
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: corners down. That's really gonna make it hard for us.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: I don't get who's doing the ball on eightside instead defense,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: they're gonna be worried about. Yeah, yeah, I mean I
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: think what Miami did, Yeah, thanks Eldred. What Miami did,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I think makes a lessnse that the defense was wretched
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: last year. And I think that they feel like they
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: can score enough to win, but they couldn't stop anybody
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: and if it works, Look, Ramsey's not the same guy
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: who was in Jacksonville. I think x is the same guy.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: And I see. I wonder if Fangio scares me more
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: than I worry mentally about Howard, because you know how
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: those guys are like everyone anymore. Everybody talks about the
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Diva wide receivers. Well, there are Diva cornerbacks too, oh yeah,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: And I think Howard might look at that and say, oh,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: you're bringing this guy in you think he's better than me,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: you know, than me that I was waiting for Fred, Like,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I think that could be a problem too. And I
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: think they both can play. I think they're both really good.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: And I think Fangio is a good move. Although you know,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: suddenly I pick on the media too much, so I'm
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: gonna leave it up. But suddenly Fangio became like the
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: second coming of like Buddy Ryan in the mid eighties
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: with six comparison. I like it. I like that, all right.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: I also want to touch on, you know, what's going
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: on elsewhere, and you have the whole Lamar Jackson situation,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: and you know, people out there talks ramping up, some
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: of them with blue check marks still say that the
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Patriots might be inquiring about Lamar Jackson. Yeah. I just
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: could never rule it out. I don't think it's necessarily
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: true that they're, you know, really trying to figure out
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: how to make it happen. But I just wouldn't. I
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: would never rule them out with a with a player
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: like this that just always seems to be reel though
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: not really. But I just I can't. I can't say that, oh,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: it will never happen. Like I just I leave the
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: door open with a player like that with Bill, with
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: with you know, some of the resources going forward, and
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: just the immediacy like you need to know. Like with Bill,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: like it's if you gotta do it, you gotta do it,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: because if if you do it and you don't and
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: it fails, then you got Max saying well, if you do,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: it's probably that's probably not here anymore. Or you mean
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: try to just try to go for him. I go
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: for and you don't get it. Now you're stuck. Now
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: you have That's that's a scenario I hadn't really considered
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: of that. He goes to say Team B and they say, well,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: we also had an offer from the Patriots of you
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: know of that didn't quite do like mm right, not great,
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: not great. That's why I think that if there was
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: a chance that he would come here, we would hear
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: nothing right about yeah right, because but but it's hard
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: to keep that on the wraps because there's another side,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: and the other side's Lamar, and he likes to go
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: on Twitter or whatever and say, what's what you know?
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: I mean? It's also, though, do you think that we're
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: a little bit too worried about Max? Psyche with things
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: like this, like is the Like there's just part of
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: me that's just like this is football though, like if
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: you don't do the job, and you're not doing the
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: job at a high level. And I'm sure Evan like
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: will back me up on this this point of view,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: you know, Like I just feel like and it's gonna
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: be this is gonna sound funny coming from me. I'm
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: gonna be a little defensive of Mac. But I do
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: think it's a little different with a quarterback because it's
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: such a mental position. And yeah, I think in general
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: most guys would understand, well, you know, that's Lamar Jackson,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: it's an MVP. But at the same time, it's it's
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: hard to court somebody to take your job and then say,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: all right, we couldn't get that guy. Yeah, yeah, Hey,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: we got all the faith in the world, do you,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Evan go out there and lead us on an eighty
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: yard touchdown drive. That's why I wouldn't go to offer
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: sheet route if they are interested, because that's happened right
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: that it has a lot of potential for that to happen.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Whereas if he signs the tender and then you trade
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: for him after that, then you can do it a
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: little bit more behind closed doors, but I would just
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: present it this way. What's more likely the Patriots trade
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: for an actual wide receiver, the Patriots trade from Lamar Jackson,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: I would say. But it took continue this threat though, Paul, like,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: you know, never like coming out saying Max, our guy
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Mac can play in this league, you know what I mean?
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Like it's it's you're kind of playing at both ways
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: and they don't want to scare him, but they do.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: It's an endorsement of Mac. No, Yeah, I think Bill,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: Bill has had many opportunities to endorse Mack and he's
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: chosen not to. Um. I think there's a lot of indecision,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: you know, in the coaching on the coaching staff with
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: got to his future. But you know, I think a
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: lot of those I mean, I think a lot of
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: those should be answered in year three. I fear that
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: we're going to be talking about this for two more years.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: And is there a chance that the Rogers thing falls
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: through for the Jets, Like the Jets just get fed
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: up with the Packers. I think the Jets are too desperate,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: they're too forget the term pregnant with this idea. They're
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: too pregnant, like right now, this is happening as they
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: see it. Their players are on board. I think if
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: the Jets fail to make it happen, it's gonna be like,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I don't want to say a death blow, but it's
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: gonna be a major blow to that team because they
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: all think that they've got him right now, and I
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: think the Packers can afford to just kind of wait,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: what what could the Packers be asking for that is
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: holding this up? Like, what price is too high? I
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: think they're asking for at least a first round pick. Yeah,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: they wouldn't go They go fourteen. You would wait a minute,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: fourteen right, the Jets right ahead of us, the thirteenth
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: overall pick for forty year old Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, who
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: may or may not like play Like, okay, so you
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: know you're gonna pick thirteen, who may or may not
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: be a great player for ten years. You know you're
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: gonna have Rodgers for three years? No, you don't. That's
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: what you're counting on here. I've almost retired this office. Yeah,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: he retired. I think if you get one really good
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: year out of him, consider yourself luck. Yeah, I mean
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: it's like five a little bit but I mean he's
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: gonna go on a darkness retreat again and then come
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: out and the vision go to the Jets, because that
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: can happen twice. So I think it's worse than five
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: because five came and people forget that five actually worked.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: He was really he was really good for the balance
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: of the season, and then he ruptured his biceps and
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: he stunked down the stretch and they they lost all
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: those games. It didn't make the playoffs. Like, I don't
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: worry about Rogers in terms of getting injured. I worry
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: about what Evan said. But I went into this retreat,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: I'm out. But if it comes out another retreat in July,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: if I'm Joe Douglas, I sit down with him and
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: I you know, I said, we need we need at
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: least three years from you. You know he's not gonna
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: give you. Are you gonna commit to three years? And
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: if he says yes, I give him a first round
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: pick for him. No, that's a little scam Newton with that. Uh.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: He says. His big thing is, I'm let's back. There
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: ain't thirty two better than me? I think there are,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: you know what? They maybe sixty four better than him?
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Never changed Cam Newton. He has the same energy as
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: like the day he was the starter here of just
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: the big smile and like you would have no idea
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: that this guy is like just barely even hang on.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: But you know, based on the way Bill treated him,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: it's all a facade. He's soft underneath, it's all that's
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: all a facade, that's all exterior coding. But underneath he's
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: he's sensitive. He's sensitive. Yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I mean, just like he can't handle it now since
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: a Rob Nikovitch this morning, he's talking about all these
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: guys that are you know, backups, and and he's talking,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: you know, if this guy can get a job, and
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: that guy can get a job, if Baker Mayfield and
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: you know, Heredy Dalton's still in the league, and I'm like,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield's better than Cam Newton. First of all, these
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: guys have played better than Cam Newton more recently number one,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: but number two. If Cam Newton just wanted to be
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: a backup, he had that opportunity last year and how
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: did he do? He was terrible? Right, he took over
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: in Carolina in the middle of the year. Right, that
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: was last year, two years ago and he was terrible, terrible, Like,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: that's Cam Newton, the backup quarterback, So you want to
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: make part of Andy Dalton. I agree, he's not Andy
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Dalton's not good, but like as a backup, he's going
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: to go out there and he's gonna not fall down.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: He's a Bryan Hoyer. He's also saying he's one of
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: the best thirty two quarterbacks in the league, not one
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: of the best sixty four. Well I would say I'm
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: not sure he's one of the best sixty four. I
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: would rather have all these guys that you know, and
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Nikovitch brought up Chad Henny. I don't think Newton could
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: do with Chad Henny did in the playoff game that
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: Henny did, right, I don't think he's capable of that.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: I mean throwing the ball, like reading the breeding progressions
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: and getting but that was a great drive that he
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: led again in Jacksonville in that game. Oh yeah, that
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: playoff game that Henny did. I don't think Henny's anything special,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: but as a veteran backup, he's prepared to come in
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: and then they show the one clip of him, like,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: you know, same technique, that shoulder comes way back. He
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: jeeves it, you know, I don't know, maybe it went
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: fifty yards and some guy like turns around and catches
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: it against Are and it's like, oh, that's proof that
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: he's you know, yeah. Yeah. Now listen, the only thing
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I'll say in his defense when his time here is
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: we're talking about the talent on the Patriots roster. There's
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: a lot more talent on the Patriots roster now than
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: there was when Cam Newton, especially at receiver. Yeah, he
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: would have killed to have like DeVante Parker and Taekwon
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: Thornton and Nelson Aglore and Jacoby Myers. Like the last
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: couple he had Myers, that was it. What else was that?
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: I mean he had Edelman for a little bit five games, Yeah,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Jamere Bird and Jacobe that was it. That was I mean,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: that was a roster I like to say, the tight
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: end of talent. Sorry, Matt Lacostal, total reset. They didn't
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: total They had no time. So in defensive Cam Newton
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: he wasn't good in twenty twenty. He didn't have a
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: lot of help. Let's get to some of these emails
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: at web radio at Patriots dot com. Sam says, Paul
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: and Evan are wrong. How are you both wrong. He
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: has separate things, but I agree, he says Evan on
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: Thursday Show. He didn't stop to repeat himself that the
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: way the Patriots are setting themselves up in free agency
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: is that they are not forced to take anyone at
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: number fourteen. They can take the best player available. Does
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: he still believe it? I think they're not forced to
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: take a cornerback at fourteen. I mean, how could they not.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: I mean if they were, I don't know. Before you
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: don't have Mills, now you brought back Jones. I mean
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: you still have You believe that they're forced to take
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: anyone at fourteen? That's no. No. I think that they're
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: forced to take a wide receiver, a tackle, or a
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: corner right now. But I don't think that they're forced
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: to take one of those positions over the The only
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: thing I would argue is I don't think they were
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: forced to take a guard in the first round last year. No,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: they chose to day felt forced Paul, He says. Every
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: time the conversation about te Higgins comes up, Paul says
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: he can't see the Brown's ownership paying for Burrow, Chase
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: and Haggins. You don't want to rip other team's ownership
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and being cheap when the Patriots has spent over twenty
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: seven million bottom five less in cash this year from
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: over the Bengals, who will probably spend more one. I
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: don't know what this guy can't right, Nobody said they
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: would be mass Yeah, the situation with the Bengal and
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: that's like, that's a fair point. I mean, like the Bengals,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: you know, Gabel Orlando Brown a big contract, although not
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: as big as I think he was probably expecting, but
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: they've spent some money in free agency. My point with
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: the Bengals is they've been an organization that runs on
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: a shoestring. And Fred will tell you some details because
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: he has some inside information on this. They would take
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: their assistant coaches as an example, and as soon as
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: the season was over, they hand them clipboards and they'd
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: helped them to go out and sky. They don't have
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: a scouting department. They didn't, they do, they do now.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: But yeah, those are the kinds of things that they
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: did to save money. So when I'm talking about cheap
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: and I'm talking about not paying a lot of money
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: for players, I'm not necessarily equating those two things. And
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: it certainly seems like Cincinnati has the intention of keeping
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: that core talent together on offense with Borrow, and Burrow's
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: already talked about trying to you know, you know, construct
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: his contract in a way that is conducive to keeping
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Chase and Higgins, you know, Boyd to a lesser extent.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: I think Boyd's a little older, so he won't necessarily
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: command that kind of money. Good for them if they
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: do that, good for them because it's a really good
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: team and it should be a really good team for
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: a while. There's no need to break it up. How
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: much did the with Jesse Bates and you know, like
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: with all that, like they they're gonna have to make decisions. Yeah,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: And that's why I mean, I thought of an example
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: of like Marvin Harrison Reggie Wayne, which was a duo
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: that was, you know, together for a while. But I
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: mean for me, it's it's Chase and then like I'd
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: like to retain Higgins, but not at the cost of
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: alienating Chase or Burrow. And you know, if you're that
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: goods Higgins, it's Chase. Yeah, and the Burrow is that good,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: which I think he is, but I think he could
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: be able to I think that I know, you wouldn't
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: have traded up from You wouldn't have gone from nineteen
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: to twenty nine in the draft to take Higgins. I
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: think I didn't hear that part. I think it would
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: have just taken it. You know, the Bengals are in
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: the exact position though, that is a good They're a
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: good team to in this situation. Is good because they
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: can let Jesse Bates walk and Nolva pay him with
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Nick Scott, who they just signed from the Rams, because
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: they have Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, and t Higgins to
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: play in the margin, so that that that's those are
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: the guys that Patriots are missing almost Patriot life, those
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: are the Those are the guys that Patriots are missing,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: are Burrow and Chase and Higgins. They got all of
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the the Nick Scotts that you could have, but they
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: for teams like that, teams like Buffalo, they have Josh
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: All Email is right though I said that, You know,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I worry about the Bengals retaining their talent because they're cheap,
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: and at least in the present, they've they've shown that
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: they're willing to spend some money. They spent some money
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: in free agency last year um shoring up their offensive line.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: They've continued to do that this year. Gave Orlando Brown him. Yeah, big, big,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: big contract for Orlando Brown, biggest free agent deal for
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: an offensive lineman. Right, that was the biggest contract. Yeah.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Well mcglinchy's is I think more in total money technically,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: but I think in terms of guarantees or Landa Brown
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: beat him. So, I mean he's right. The email is right.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: The Bengals have spent some money. Anthony writes in there
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: is a move out there that automatically makes the Patriots
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: a top five team in the AFC Super Bowl contenders
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: and highly relevant for years to come. Of course he's
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: talking about Lamar. Yes, it costs two first round picks
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: and probably three hundred million dollars spread over six to
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: seven years. Yup in the back three years of that
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: deal will look like a fantastic bargain based on how
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: the market continues to evolve for high end quarterbacks. Name
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: me two consecutive first round picks you wouldn't trade away
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: for a top tier quarterback Cole Strange, Matt Jones, two
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: first year, first, two year first. You have to go
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: back to twenty twelve. I was trying to say high
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Tower channel with Jones, but I still would have traded
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: this for a top tier Yeah, you have to go
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: back to twenty twelve to fine picks. You may not
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: want to give up for a great quarterback Jones and
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: High Tower. If Robert Kraft wants to be relevant, this
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: is the move. You do the deal, or make the
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: trade with Baltimore. To facilitate the deal. You trade Mac
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: and Hope for a second from a quarterback hungry team
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: and play ball. I totally get what he's saying. I
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: guess my question is just why is this so hard
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: for Baltimore? I mean, if if our emailer can write
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: in it's such a slam dunklick, why why can't it
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: get done? Like? Why you know, what's the hold up? Like?
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: Why isn't Baltimore right? Why doesn't Baltimore see this when
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: it seems like such a I want to bring up something, UM,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: just curious what you guys think? What do you guys
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: think of Baltimore. Let's just say Jackson is the quarterback
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: and there's no problems, no external on field. Last year,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: he's healthy, it's week eight, Say what did you guys
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: think of Baltimore sat in the hierarchy of the AFC, sporadic,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: beatable when it comes to the biggest game, like you know, supposedly,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: but for other teams, I do. But do you think
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: that they were a super Bowl contender? Yes, well they're
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: at playoff contenue, but no, they were a playoff lock. Yeah,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: but were they a Super Bowl content? I think whenever
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: you have that guy under center, you can win any
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: game against anybody on any Sunday, Okay, I would probably
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: put them. I would put them just outside, Okay, I
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: would I would be more with Evan Is. I think
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: that Baltimore was a borderline Super Bowl contender. But talent wise,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: I think they're better than the Patriots. Like, forget the quarterback.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: I just think talent wise, they were better than the Patriots. Now,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: it's weird because of the way they're offense is structured.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: You could definitely say I'd rather have Parker Myers born,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: you know, than Rashod Bateman and Devin DuVernay or whatever.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: But that's the way their offense was structured, with the
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: running element of Lamar Jackson. So it's a hard camp.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: But I think talent wise, Baltimore was better than New England.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: So therefore, I'm saying if I put Lamar Jackson on
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: the Patriots, I'm not sure it's a slam dunk that
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: this email is saying like they're a super Bowl contender.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: I don't think they're as good as Baltimore. And I
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: think there's an argument that you guys just made. Evan
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: says yes, Mike says, maybe you say no, that Baltimore
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: was a super Bowl contender with Lamar Jackson. Right, So
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I don't think it's a slam dunk to just say, well,
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: you get Lamar Jackson, you're a super Bowl contender. You're exciting.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: I'm excited because I love Lamar Jackson. I'm selfish. I
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: just want to be entertaked. I remember that that year,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: I think it was Lamar's first year, the Patriots went
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: to Baltimore and we just got a boy. I think
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: we have. We're on a winning street, were feeling good
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: about it. Probably the most miserably was there and they
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: pasted us and we had no answers. And I'm thinking
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: of my while I'm watching the game, like, how's any
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: team gonna stop these guys? But teams did. They figured
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: it out, and I think once you figure out how
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: you're going to play against that offense, you can beat him.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: It's tough though, because like to go back to my
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: sporadic thing, like they look pretty okay, you know in
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: the rainstorm here when they played him again, but then
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: last year in the second half, they had no answers
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: again from Lamar Jackson. So it's like, you know, you
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: go through these periods where you're like, Lamar's kind of
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: all right, we're keeping him in the pocket. He's not
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: really able to go through the progressions, but then all
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: of a sudden, he just gets loose and he tears
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you apart, and it's you know, I think that's part
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: of like why I'm not over the moon about Lamar
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Jackson just in general, is just no that you don't
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: always know every single not so we could have like
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: this fifteen mined conversation of no, you're wrong, Baltimore was good,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Like No, I just think it's it's eye opening to
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: hear three different opinions of whether or not you guys
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: think the Ravens are a Super Bowl contender. So it's
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: by no mean The answer to that is maybe they're
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: by no means. Are they a lock? And even if
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: you want to say the Patriots are is good is Baltimore?
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: I would argue that not. But you could say that
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: there is good talent wise, how does that make you
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: a Super Bowl contender? The argument would be, And this
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: is unfortunate because on one of my shows yesterday, I
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: appeared on Outside of the Boston market really yeah, branching
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: out my main station that calls me every once in
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: a while, Puerto Rico. Yeah, Banger, I'm bang, I'm big
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: at bang, I'm big at bangor banging and banger. I
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: didn't even know it. Um, So this gets brought out
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: and and you know, when we were talking about it,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: I couldn't help but go back to that rumor before
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: the draft and that Josh was really intrigued and it
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: worked him out. Blah blah blah. And the guy asked me,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: what do you think it would have looked like if
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: they did draft Lamar Jackson? And then just think about
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: how different it would be. Like Brady plays in eighteen
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: and maybe he stays for nineteen like he did, and
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: you know, Lamar's two years in and he takes over
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: in twenty. I think with Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson is a much more refined pastor today than
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: he is right now. Now. Is that being a suck up? Yeah?
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Maybe maybe, But I think that Lamar Jackson, I mean,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: I think Josh McDaniels is a far better offensive coordinator
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: than Greg Roman. And I think that they would I
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: think Bill Belichick would have been instrumental and saying these
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: are some of the things you need to do to
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: avoid the mistakes. I think it what are they would
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: have turned him into Tim Tebow. I think some of
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: the Tim Tebow didn't have the like that's that's that's
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: the difference, Like you know, and the past lot of
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: people is so much on Greg Roman, like their passing
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: concepts are so rudimentary and simple, and that wasn't It's
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: not because of Lamar, because that Louisville. He's doing full
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: field progressions and running a pro style offense. From a
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: passing game standpoint, just fine. Heisman trophies. So I just
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: I'm all for Lamar. I've been all for Lamar. I
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: think that he's actually becoming underrated for a lot of people,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: especially here with this conversation coming up, Like I feel
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: like a lot of people are underselling just how good
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: he is. And my whole thing with the Super Bowl
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: is you have Lamar Jackson and you have Harbaugh, who
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: I think is a solid coach. That pairing winning a
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: Super Bowl would not blow any of us away. If
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I told you, like going into next season and Lamar
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: and Harbor are going to win the Super Bowl, would
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: anybody be like, that's surprised, Like that's no way, Like, yeah,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: that's definitely due. I think Baltimore is a talented team
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: that can't figure out how you know, how to stay healthy,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: and it's derailed him the last two years. I mean
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: they've been I think they were eight. I think they
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: were eight and three each of the last two years,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: and they stumbled to the finish both times. But I
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: mean they should have won that since an Attie game
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: in the playoffs, you know, and then then they go
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: to Baltimore. Maybe they beat Baltimore, I don't know. Alex
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: writes in I mean Buffalo, right, Baltimore doesn't go to Baltimore,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: that'll be weird. Talking about the special teams, Alex says
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: one comment about the special teams signings, I don't know
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: how after giving up two kickoff returns for touchdowns in
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: their last game and struggling down the line. People can
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: complain about the team investing in special teams. And one question,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: with all the moves the Patriots have made so far,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: do you think they go cornerback or tackle or something
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: else at fourteen I could see either one of those.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: I think it's just depending on what's tackles fall and
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: who's gonna I mean, I think any you look at
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: any mock draft and there's you know, the top three
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: tackles are gone or the top three corners are gone,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: and I mean, I think those are those are the
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: guys that are most appealing. I mean, I've gotten off
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: the wide receiver thing at fourteens just doesn't seem right there.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: But I'd be down. I'd be down with any of
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: those top tackle, top cornerback options. I think it would
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: it would be a good long term decision for the team.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: A mail, ma'am. I would just make a counter and
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: saying in the last game they got up two fifty
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: yard touchdown passes too. I can't believe they haven't done
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: anything to address the secondary like that Mayo man in
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Maine right since since it seems like Gerard Mayo is
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: lining up to be the next head coach, and people
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: have mentioned they don't have many players signed through twenty
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: twenty four twenty five. Do you think Mayo has some
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: say in the draft this year? It seems likely that
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Bill will be gone in three or so years in
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: this class will hopefully still be here four years out
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: if they draft, Well, that's an I don't know. I mean,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: I don't know what his role is going to be.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: In the article recently, was it the Athletic yea, yeah,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: I don't know what's this. What's his role going to be?
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: The sail where being the heir apparent? I mean part
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: of me is just expecting him to be in the
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: same exact kind of doing the same stuff day to
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: day training camp when we see them come out. Huh yeah, yeah,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: I don't know who. Do you know who Chad graph is?
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: If he's the beat writer for the Athletic, he's been
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: here for like two years? Yeah, not even last year?
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: Was this this year was his first year? Yeah, that's
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: kind of a interesting story for such a young new guy.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Nubi you think that he's being fed that No, oh,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: so he's just speculating. Who do you think Mayo would
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: have chosen as his offensive coordinator this year if he
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: would have gotten a head coaching job, who he knows,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: who knows who would Mayo have chosen? Who would Mayo
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: have chosen? O'Brien. I don't think Mayo has anywhere near
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: as much power as this email. I know, that's what
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: I said. I don't even think mac rowe has as
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: much power as this. I don't think. I don't have
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: the exact wording, and I know where some of this
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: stuff is coming from, like that mccordion to you an
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: ei was fascinating, like about a week ago. Um, but
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: some of this is related to He was asked if
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: he thought that Mayo was the heir apparent, you know,
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: the coach in waiting, I think was the way they
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: phrased it, and he's He answered yes, but if you
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: listen to the answer. As he continued, he was answering,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: he thinks Gerard Mayo is a head coach not he
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: didn't like and again people that are people that are
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: took from that answer that he said he is the
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: head coach and waiting or not wrong by the technical
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: Greg Brady exact words, he said that, but I think
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: I think he meant his head coach material. That's what
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: I think he meant. Yeah, that's exactly what I think
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: he meant. And it's kind of a long way of
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: me saying I'm not sure Gerard Mayo is the coach
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: in waiting either. I know everybody else is completely convinced.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: I don't think Mayo meant it that way the way
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: he said it. I think he meant he's a head
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: head coaching material, cord if he's not walking out with
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: the Cordy meant that when playing catch with Steve and
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: working with the linebackers, like, that's what I expect to see.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: I don't expect to see him wandering to different position
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: groups with Bill giving input or you know, watching on
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: the sideline with Matt Girl Like I, I just we
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: have to see what exactly is going to change about
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: his role, But I'm not anticipating it's going to be
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: anything that monumentally different. I'm with Evan and Mike spe
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: speaking of Devin may and four Latter Day al Rights.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: Did you guys see Devon's tweets about Zappy Versusmac the
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: locker room divide and that it was more of an
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: indictment on the state of the offense more than the quarterback.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: There was never hope. Yes, what did you think about that?
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: She asks? I mean, like a lot of things that
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: have come out after the season, it was unfortunately just
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: confirmation of what you thought, like what you you know,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: what you were seeing and sometimes but it's yeah, you know,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: we were never we were never solidified as an offensive
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: group that guys had full confidence in anything new, uh
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: and anything new we were what we were doing. There
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: was never true hope. Right, this is this is what
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: the the feeling was. Offensively, there was no hope because
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: they had no faith in what they were being told
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: to do. Um. But the part that the email had
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: brought up that was really interesting was when something would
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: go wrong, people would immediately say, you know, we should
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: be playing zappy and that I didn't know that I
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: I didn't know was was going on like that. There
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: was some players saying that yeah, yeah, yeah, So Evan's
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: gonna go over and get set up for the Devin
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: mccordy festivities. Um, and what does he mean to say
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: in a chair, It's gonna get up there, get a
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: good position, get a good spot. Okay, make sure he's
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: in line with the camera. Yeah, let's get back to
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: the phones. We'll go to Sean, Sean and Vancouver. What's
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: up Sean? Hi? Everyone? Um, Fred, you can drop my email.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: So you know, I was surprised last month when I
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: read the PFF frankings and said that Myers was the
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: number one wide receiver free agent option. I thought Judo
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: was better because of Yack, higher ceiling, possibly lower floor though,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: But um, I don't. I don't know how, um, Mike
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: or what? What do you thought Paul back in that time?
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: But I know Evan's our rote on March nine that
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Jacobe Myers is a top option pre agency out Mike, uh,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: And I don't know even you're still there? Did you
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: say that Juju is improvement? Now? Why the change? I mean,
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I didn't know really much about Juju, like I mean,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: going after they signed him, I went and watched, you know,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: watched him play. I mean, I look, I don't think
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: that this is a monumental upgrade. I just think that
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: he is. And yeah, but I think that, you know,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: and Paul and I had a discussion about this yesterday,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: so it made me. Paul asked some questions that I
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: that I dipped into, which were you know why their
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: yards per catched similar m you know, and it's it's
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: really just js jss is is getting the ball closer
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: to the line of scrimmage more consistently. But um, I
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: just think he's you know, and I don't mean to
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: sound this is every time you talk about Jacoby like
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: you're trying to you're killing him. But you know, he's
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: a former quarterback, and I think you saw a reliable
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: guy who knew where to be. I just think when
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I watched Juju Smith Schuster, I'm like, that guy is
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: a pure wide receiver who looks like, you know, he's
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: gonna be a challenge when he gets the ball, and
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I just didn't see enough of that out of Jacoby
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: over the course. I mean, certainly reliable, and I think,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: you know, the hands drops have been a little bit
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: of industry for Juju um, you know, But I just
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: think he maybe gives you a little bit more potential
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: as far as you know, with the ball in his
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: hands making some plays. But I do think that it's
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: interesting to me though, that they aren't really interested in
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: any real sideline to sideline quickness, and it seemed like
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: they lived in that with the offense for a while,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: and I think Juju's a vertical guy. I think Kisiki's
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: a vertical guy. I think last year they were trying
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: to push the ball down vertical. So I just think
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: this is a Belichick thing, not a Matt Patricia thing.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: That it just seems to me like this is a philosophy.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: We want to get the ball down the field, and
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: maybe they're not even really interested in horizontal quick guys
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. They want to go down the
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: field with it. Now. I like Juju and I've always
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: liked him as a player. I think he's pretty tough.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: I think they're extraordinarily similar players Mike Myers and Smith Schuster.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Mike is alluding to a discussion we had yesterday about
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: YAK and how I don't really care about YAK because
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: it results in the same amount of yards. And I
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: think that you can say it looks better when you
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: watch a guy catch a short pass and make a
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: twelve yard gain as opposed to a guy catch a
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: ten yard pass for a twelve yard gain. But I
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: don't really care because to me, I just want the
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: twelve yard gain. I think that they they generally and
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: I think Juju I don't, you know, I know that
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: some of the drop stats, I haven't really noticed that
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: being a real problem with him. I like Juju. Like
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: I said to the start, I don't think that they're
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: gonna The only way that this blows up on them
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: is if he doesn't pick up the system and establish
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: a relationship with Macy, which I think is a real
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: concern because I think that's been a problem for incoming
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Patriots receivers periodically over the years. There is some that
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: are seamless, like you know, Brandon LaFell, you know, came
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: write in and did it, you know, really well, and
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: there have been others that just never seemed to catch on.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: So I worry about it. I do, But I just
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: I don't see the enormous upside that a lot of
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: my other colleagues are writing about ben voland was the
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: latest one today in his piece a massive upgrade. I
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: just don't see it that way. I think they're very
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: similar players, and maybe Juju will have a better year
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: than than Jacoby Myers. I don't think Jujus had a
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: better year than Jacoby Myerson's twenty eighteen. That's when he
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: was when he caught one hundred and eleven passes for
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: fourteen hundred yards opposite Antonio Brown. Jacoby Myers can't do that.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: He's not that kind of player. So if you want
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: to say that's upside, I don't think that's Juju Smith's
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: Shuster's upside anymore. But that was five years. He hasn't
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: been that guy since the knee injury that took him
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: out the next year for half of that season. He
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: averaged eight point six a catch the next two years,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: and then he went and found Mahomes and he went
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: back up to twelve. He was a thirteen plush yard
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: per catch until the injuries, and then he went down
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: under ten, under nine even for two straight years. I
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: don't think that his upside is the fourteen hundred yard
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: catch guy. I think his upside is the eight number
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: one option eighty. I think you could catch eighty balls
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: for the Patriots this year. I'll take that. Yeah, that's
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: what Myers does. And eight touchdowns. Yeah, I don't care
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: who's supposed to touch them. I really don't. They're gonna
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: get an next amount of number of touchdowns. I don't
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: care if Kiseki gets them, if Henry gets them, if
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: they run him in with Ramondre Stevenson. They're gonna get
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: They're gonna get the touchdowns. I don't know. Is Myers
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: a good touchdown guy? No, I'm just saying, no, he's
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: not right touchdowns. No, he's not right. Well, yeah, twice
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: as many as Ju drew last year six to three.
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: They I don't but I don't use that as my
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: feeling because whatever they're gonna score touchdowns, someone's got to
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: score them. Thanks Sean, appreciate the call. Let's go to
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Chris and Scottsdale. What's up Chris, Hey, guys, thanks for
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: taking the call today. Obviously, Um, just a couple of
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: thoughts that I wanted to share. Um, And I'm coming
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: in late today working and just kind of on breaking
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: coming in a little bit late. But I don't know
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: if some of the things that I have to say
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: or have been covered or not. But uh, it looks
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: like Bills back to his old tricks with you know,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: stalking the special teams, with you know massive you know
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: we'll not massive, but you know rich contracts for those
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: kinds of players. Oh, small money, you don't worry about it.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Running backs, you know this that you know, there's just
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: it's just kind of like the thing and and Paul,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: you say that, but it is interesting. That's the stuff
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: that we talked about earlier. Chris, I'm just joking. Oh okay,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: because here's here's what I was gonna say. And I
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: who is the the guy that just came back? What's
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: his name is? Did? Eludes me? Right now? The special team?
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: What's that? Cody Davis? No, No, that our our guys
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: been here, yeah, Mats later. So so Slater right, a
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: great player for us, you know, in his position and everything.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: When he was rumored to be retiring, I was actually
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: happy about it because I thought, naively, and I'm really
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: frustrated about this, I thought naively that, okay, well, hey
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: that that makes it so he doesn't have special teams, Binky,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: We're not going to have three million dollars, four million
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: dollars whatever it is that he makes every year, uh,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: you know, assigned and allotted to that position. Maybe he
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: shaves a little bit off another position, takes those combines
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: them and actually goes out and you know, stalks the
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: team with a real you know, serviceable, you know, make
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: a difference weapon. But I gotta tell you, guys, just
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: and again this is from a fan perspective that it's
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: it's just growing super super super tired man, Like, I'm
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: so over this, and it's so deeply clear at this point,
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: at least to me. And I'm not saying Bills an
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: idiot and he doesn't know how to coach. I'm never
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: going to be that guy. But I will say this.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: I will say this, It's become deeply clear to me,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: or obviously clear to me, that Brady is really, really,
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: you know, the straw that stirs the drink here in
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: New England and made everything work all these years in
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: spite of all of the insane moves and you know,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: horrible free agencies and drafts and over vern over and
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: over and over. And in terms of Lamar, and I'll
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: say I got two more things for it, then I'll
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: be super quick about it. In terms of Lamar, I'm
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: not really trying to go down that road if if
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: we and and by the way, I don't want the
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: current quarterback that we have now. I don't even want
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: to cheer for the guy. I'm not even kidding. I
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: watched two games last year because it was I knew
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: what I was watching and it was just disgusting and
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: I didn't want to watch it, right, But I don't
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: even want to cheer for the guy. And so if
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: they're gonna go down the Lamar road or something like that,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: I'd rather than you know, because I don't care about
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: the draft capital. I'm so frustrated with the way the
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: guys drafts. It's unbelievably just horrible to me. So I
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: really don't care what it takes in terms of draft capital,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: either to move up and get Richardson if you want,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: like kind of a Lamar clone and have him honest
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: rookie deal right and do that. But even if you
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: did go with Lamar, I don't really care about spending
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: two first round picks. Look at our first round picks, man,
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: it's absolutely it's asinine. I mean it's it's so embarrassing
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: when you have coaches laughing at like when we when
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: we when we took Cold Strange, the Rams coach McVeigh
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: is literally laughing about it. Oh, hey, we were gonna
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: take a look at this guy in the third or
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: fourth round or something like that or whatever, you know,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: And then when you mess up drafting the offensive lind
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: so so horribly that of course, and I predicted this
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: last year, and it is on one of the shows
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: where I said, great next year in the draft week
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: gets to draft another fat guy and the rest of
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: the league can have Clinton Johnson or uh, you know
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: Evan's guy, Uh, Nick Buck, you know. For I'm probably
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: I get it. Chris, thanks for he let it all out.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: He's thanks seven. Yeah, but you know, I think I
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: think two games he watched pretty bad. I can understand
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: his frustration, but I think he's a little bit Yeah,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: I drafts and the terrible free agent. I'm just going
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: to let you know. I know you don't pick that
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: scab with me because I get in trouble every time
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: I do. And I like all the terrible things they did.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: And who's that? Oh yeah, mathis Slater? Right? Yeah you know, yeah, yeah,
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: it's not that. And Slater doesn't make for a million
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: a year either, No, he makes it doesn't even make
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: three yet five and three. Uh. He says, that's been
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: a while since I wrote in Uh, but he's been
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: traveling a lot, he said. I wanted to share that
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: I am in San Francisco this morning and I saw
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: DeAndre Hopkins at Logan also, So can I just tell
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: you real quick, you know, the famous shot of yeah,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: you know Larry Fitz at the Hurts Country? Is that
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: really Larrifzer? No, no, no, no, But it's a funny.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: Means it's always funny, right. So t J comes on,
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: he goes I heard d Hop was at Logan, I
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: go anyone No. Also, I think after listening to Evan
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: on Cash twenty two, I've come around to being satisfied
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: with the Jujus signing, as he's pointed out his skill
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: set an upgrade over Jacobe, although I felt like having
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: a known commodity that knows the system like him would
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: outweigh bringing in Juju. Overall, I feel like it's been
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: a solid off season so far. But the key piece
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: is if we can get a true wide receiver one
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: that's I mean, and that's the thing. It's like, I
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: think we're all we can. We can spend an hour,
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: you know, breaking down the minutia of how much better
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: we think JSS is than or not. Like ultimately they
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: need more and back. They're not going to move the
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: needle enough to get them pass b off. The same
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: thing the last two years. It's been the last three,
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: but I'll say the last two years. Jacoby Myers has
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: been your top receiver, and I would sit here and
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: tell you, after my disclaimers of how much I love
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: the kid, that any team that has him is the
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: best receiver is not good enough. Right I say the
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: same thing today right now. Juju was the number one
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: receiver and ain't good enough? Ye, Patrick and Ottawa. I
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: don't understand how Evident Company can tell everyone to relax
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: and wait and see by draft day. Have we not
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: learned anything from the last five or six years? Have
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: we not suffered a coaching drain during that time? Yes?
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: Have we not all been disappointed overall with our drafts? Yes?
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: Have we been waiting for better offensive talents since Gront's departure. Yes,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: have we not been close to the league lead and
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: penalties in that time? Yes, people are down because the
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: overall trend lines of the team for the past few
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: years are all going the wrong way. We are suffering
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: from a lack of faith that anything will change. While
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: BB is here and he says it's okay to want
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: someone new, the young replaced the old all the time.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: Oh wow, I mean I get what he's saying. And yes,
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: like frustrations are mounting, But at the same time, like,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: and I'll say it, I said it last show. I mean,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: I didn't expect them to surpass Buffalo in the first
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: week of free agency. Like, it's a process and they're
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: way behind. So it's the draft. It's the draft picks
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: that they've had, It's the draft picks that they're going
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: to have. And when they start hitting on those draft picks,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: then you'll start to have something. But you know, to
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: think that you could just pull twenty twenty one again
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: and oh, it'll work out this time, we'll sign the
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: right free agents. This time, we won't be cutting the
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: two guys that we gave four year deals to two
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: years from now. You know, like, it's it's tough, but
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: I continue to be already coming the raft. You read
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: it Sunday, right, I know you read Mike Mike Reese.
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: It's one hundred some odd million in cap space for
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: for twenty twenty four. Here we got like, and I'm
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: just gonna say, don't go down that road. And I'm
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: not talking about cap space. It's not a cap space. No,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: it's not that they're going to spend crazy next right,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: right draft draft draft, and that the only way out
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: of this is to consistently get good young players and
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: identify which ones you want to build around, and then
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: make the right choices and keep them and get them
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: locked up. So they have so much cap space projected
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: for next year. Because why, Mike, what did you say
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: in the last show that I was on last week Tuesday,
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: something about um ten guys? I mean, yeah, yeah, for
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, they had ten guys under contract. That's
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: why they projectives have so much cap space next year.
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: They don't have to the free agent class of twenty
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: one that costs a lot of money, for the most part,
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: is going to be off the roster by twenty twenty four.
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: But you can also you can the other way to
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: look at that is, you know, assuming that Mike is accurate,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: you have all that cap space next year, you can
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: use that to sign guys this year, Yes, Kyle Dugger
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: Michael contracts and use up some of that cap space
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: now by you know, structuring the contract to hit next year. Yes,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: you know, I think that's important. You have to. This
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: is why I say the importance of identifying the correct
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: guys to spend money on and locking them up. Yeah.
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: But but I mean, but here's the reality. I mean
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: you named off those three guys. They're all good players,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: are any of them pound the table? We can't go
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: forward as an organization without these guys on the team
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: right now, like more or less surprised they resign them
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: or they walk that they resign them. You'd be more
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: surprised that they resigned them if they resigned. I mean,
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: on when you use a right confuse myself my own question,
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: and I agree with Mike, but I mean, like, realistically,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: on mine us a right guard. And I think we're
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: all like, all right, let's let's let's maybe pump the
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: brakes on over investing in the guard position. We just
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: did that, so you know, and then you're left with Dugger,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: who apparently they got strong safeties lining up for days.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: And I think he's a great player, and I think
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: he could still be kind of special. But at the
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: end of the day, how much of a drop off
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: is the defense if we're gonna just turn that over
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: to Jibill Peppers. So we're gonna turn over to Josh Bledsoe.
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: You know, today's NFL, though, that dugger role a guy
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: that can come up to the close to the line,
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: that's becoming an increasingly important role in the NFL. There's
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: an argument to be made about Dugger, and I don't
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: want to dismiss him and make it sound like whatever,
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: like I would love to keep him, and I'd even
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: like to keep Uch even though he is, you know,
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: a little bit limited just to passing downs now. But
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: I think it's a passing league, and if you have
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: a guy that's a problem on third down and can
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: get after the quarterback consistently, hopefully he shows that again
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: this year and builds off of what he did last year,
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: then you know, I just think as a fan as
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: much as as a football analyst, you're like, I don't
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: think they any of these guys are vital, But as
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: a fan, I think it allays some of the problems
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: that we've heard from callers of that, you know, who
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: is this team? Now you're saying, all right, Kyle Dugger's
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: a guy we're gonna invest in. He's going to be
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: here for another five years. You know, you start to
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: see some kind of structure going forward. And it's something
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: I mean Alex talked about last week, is like who
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: is this team? What's their identity? What? You know we're
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: all kind of waiting to see on Mac. We're waiting
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: to see on how these new free agents work out.
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: We're waiting to see if the defense can you turn
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: the page against teams like Buffalo. So it's just it's
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: about the draft. They've got to nail a few draft picks.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: Yan the only way out, yep Ryan in Salt Lake City.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: Everybody is so high on d Hop But how will
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: he move the needle? He's older, born in Agala, are
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: just as fast as d Hop. Therefore he doesn't present
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: a much better downfield option. He may draw more in
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: both faster than it Hopkins. He may draw more coverage
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: which may open other receivers. But I just don't see
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: how d Hop is worth a big contract and potentially
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: future draft picks. The answer is a better quarterback, Lamar.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: Spend the money now for a player who can make
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: a difference now, or just wait until next year to
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: spend forty to fifty million on another middling quarterback. Pay
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: now and be relevant for the next three to four years.
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: I mean, is it just money for Baltimore? Is that?
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: Is that the problem? Like they just don't want to
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: pay that much money or do they like you know,
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: because I don't know what's going on. I wish I
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: could give you something like some it seems like a
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: slam dunk. Everybody's just like he's amazing. I always have
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: a plant on things like you know, this reeks of that.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: I have no idea what's going on there? Get it? Yeah?
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: I thought when they made the decision to move on
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: from Greg Roman, that that was sort of, you know it,
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: admission on the organization's pot that we haven't given you
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: the best support that we could have. We're going to
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: do that. Yeah, you know, I don't know. I don't
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: have no idea what's going on there. All right, We're
