- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. It's Barry Nixon along with
- 0:12Jason Riley, the one and only as we bring you another week of fun
- 0:17conversation. And remember, we are the podcast
- 0:19you can listen to on your break at work and we encourage you to
- 0:22do so. Jay, It's great to see you,
- 0:24brother. It's so.
- 0:25Great to see you as well, Barry. We got an action-packed show,
- 0:28lots of updates, things we're going to get to.
- 0:31I think our listeners and our viewers are really going to like
- 0:34this one. You know how we started off?
- 0:36We always start off. We started.
- 0:38Off with a shot and Barry, if you'll indulge me for this one.
- 0:43Sure, I'm going non alcoholic this time Jay, because I'm
- 0:46getting a workout in immediately following this recording
- 0:49session. So I'm having a little pre
- 0:50workout from our good friends at Ghosts.
- 0:53Yeah, absolutely. And I am alongside with you,
- 0:57supporting you with what was a Summerhill Easy Green, but has
- 1:01now been filled up with an orange squeezy from Kool-aid.
- 1:05Before we take our shot, let me just send this cheers about not
- 1:10quite two weeks ago, we said goodbye at the Mini Mansion to
- 1:13the true owner of the Mini Mansion, our dog London.
- 1:17London was particularly fond of you.
- 1:21I vividly remember one time you came to visit.
- 1:24You're wearing sweatpants, like attire, sweatpants that you
- 1:27would go out in and be proud to go out in.
- 1:30And London, who just came in from a fresh walk in the rain
- 1:33with executive producer Aldo Roma, ran up to you and put
- 1:37those paws right on those sweatpants.
- 1:39And what did we learn? We learned that if you pay up
- 1:42for quality, those paw prints come right off with a wet cloth,
- 1:46and that's exactly what they did.
- 1:47No harm, no foul. Rest in peace.
- 1:50And he was your smoking buddy. You'd occasionally take him out
- 1:53and he enjoyed a little doob with Uncle Barry.
- 1:57He sure did, and I hope wherever he is, he's enjoying many a
- 2:01super from someone who's not me. But one day we will meet again.
- 2:05Absolutely, and he didn't drink either.
- 2:07So nice to have a non alcoholic beverage.
- 2:10Cheers to London. To London, Cheers.
- 2:18All right. Delicious.
- 2:20Berry, why don't you take our viewers and our listeners on
- 2:25this exciting trip that you just came back from?
- 2:29What happened? OK.
- 2:31Thank you, Jay. Great setup.
- 2:33Great setup. My missus and I, executive
- 2:37producer Linda Lebrun, we were fortunate enough to go to ACL,
- 2:41which is the Austin City Limits Music Festival weekend #1 the
- 2:45time of this recording. It was wrapped up yesterday or a
- 2:48day before yesterday, and it was an absolutely frictionless
- 2:53experience. Why do I say frictionless?
- 2:56From the picking up of the wristband to the getting into
- 2:59the park to the access to the VIP, to not having to wait in
- 3:04line virtually at all. And if we did, it was like count
- 3:08to 10 and it's over. Nice it was.
- 3:12Incredible. The entire it.
- 3:13It felt, Linda said, that this was a very adult run experience.
- 3:17Versus Governor's Bowl felt a little more chaotic, although it
- 3:20was still great. Yeah, envious 1.
- 3:23And VIP. Both VIP.
- 3:25OK, Yeah. Very different VI PS though.
- 3:28Whereas Governor's Ball had part of the stage like sectioned off,
- 3:32we didn't have that at ACL. We were on these giant like
- 3:36grandstands. They were completely shaded, had
- 3:40seats, there was benches and like sort of like half bars you
- 3:44could rest your drink on. It was unbelievable.
- 3:47You like to be able to rest a drink while you're enjoying your
- 3:49show. I know that you brought that up
- 3:51with the with raw pizza a few times.
- 3:53You could set things down. You like a place to set things
- 3:56down? I do because, you know, we're
- 3:59civilized men, you and IJ. And I think, yeah, you also
- 4:02appreciate this. I do.
- 4:03I don't. Like my wife, a drink just
- 4:05sweating in your hand and yeah, I don't enjoy that.
- 4:07I like to be able to set it down and know that it's got a sturdy
- 4:10place to rest close by. Exactly.
- 4:12Anyway, right behind the grandstands was all the VIP
- 4:15amenities. Your food, your restroom, your
- 4:17bar, your shaded loungers. Really.
- 4:21Comfortable seating, couches. They even had an outdoor TV that
- 4:24was showing the games on NFL Sunday and college football on
- 4:28Saturday. Like this is Texas, right?
- 4:30So this is all part of their lifeblood is certainly football.
- 4:35Yeah, the whole experience was incredible.
- 4:37And I haven't even got to the part about the performances like
- 4:41strokes. That was the main, really the
- 4:43main reason for the trip. They absolutely killed it
- 4:46despite with you know, I understand there's been some not
- 4:49so flattering remarks online about their performance.
- 4:52I was there. Take it for me.
- 4:54I don't know. These are haters and it's
- 4:55probably bots from overseas. Who knows if they're even real.
- 4:59And I can tell you as a real person, it could be that's a
- 5:03thing. Is that?
- 5:04Yeah. But you can take it from me,
- 5:05Jay. I was there in person.
- 5:07I witnessed it. There was 1 moment though, that
- 5:09I thought was funny. Julian Casablancas, the lead
- 5:11singer, is known to be a little cantankerous at times, and at
- 5:14one point during the show he did yell at the drones that were
- 5:18circling overhead to give people the sort of overhead crowd
- 5:22experience. It would be shot up on the
- 5:23screens beside him. He did yell at the drones.
- 5:26He did. Apparently they were bugging his
- 5:28eyes. He was also wearing sunglasses
- 5:30that it was the dead of night. So who knows, maybe that's what
- 5:33people were picking up on that he seemed like he wasn't happy
- 5:35to be there. That's not the vibe I got.
- 5:37He was just calling out some drones.
- 5:39And here's the thing. So that explains the anti
- 5:41strokes bots because you know, you start yelling at the drones,
- 5:44they're connected to the bots and they start putting the hate
- 5:47online. So I see it all.
- 5:49It's all cause and effect. I'm glad to hear the strokes was
- 5:52amazing for you and you enjoyed it.
- 5:53And I would always take your opinion over virtually anyone
- 5:56else on the planet earth. So wow, it's gold.
- 5:59It's gold when you say it. I do want to pause a moment and
- 6:03let's go back to something you mentioned the VIP section food.
- 6:06Can you please let our viewers and listeners and myself know
- 6:09what's on offer? Oh man, there was all kinds of
- 6:13stuff that you would approve of. Chief among them would be your
- 6:16slices of pizza. They had mozzarella sticks that
- 6:18were gorgeous, like one bite and the string cheese, you know, it
- 6:22was just perfectly done. The pizza was great.
- 6:25We also had hot dogs. We had burgers like we just kept
- 6:29it simple and we also had some chicken tenders, which I also
- 6:33know you're a fan of. Jay, This had everything you
- 6:35want and nothing you don't. Nice.
- 6:37Were there giant pretzels I could feel there would be at
- 6:39this place? There may have been, I didn't
- 6:42jump out at me, but they did have giant cans of Miller Lite,
- 6:46the 24 oz cans. You like that?
- 6:49It was incredible. And of course, we had to get a
- 6:51couple of commemorative koozies because like you said, civilized
- 6:55people don't want your cans sweating.
- 6:57By the way, it was like 90°. Every day of the festival was
- 7:01hot as hell and there was barely any wind.
- 7:04So it's just like that heat. You just have to live inside.
- 7:07So anyway, the koozies came in handy.
- 7:09Otherwise we would have been dropping our 24 inch cans all
- 7:11over the place. And and that's just not a good
- 7:14look for anybody. Yeah.
- 7:15So, all right, So what was other than the strokes, who else or
- 7:19what else was a stand out at the?
- 7:21Festival man. There's a band called Wet Leg
- 7:25and they are from England and I'd heard about these guys from
- 7:29friend of ours, friend of the show, DJ Teenage Werewolf.
- 7:32Apparently they were at the Phoenix a couple years ago,
- 7:34didn't see them then but they were on one of the main stages
- 7:37around 4:30. So kind of like the third band
- 7:40before the the big act. They were great.
- 7:43We also saw T Pain. T Pain.
- 7:46T Pain was amazing. He'd like played an entire like
- 7:50probably hour 15. It was great.
- 7:53And he was zipping through the songs.
- 7:54He had the crowd going insane. I've never seen so many people
- 7:58dancing and moving. Like I showed you that short
- 8:00video just to kind of capture the scale of this festival.
- 8:03Incredible. So imagine all those people all
- 8:05kind of swaying together. That's what was happening when T
- 8:08Pain took the the stage. He was great.
- 8:10And then of course, the killers. I mean, I I'm still thinking
- 8:14about it. Their set was lights Out.
- 8:17It was they were the perfect closers for the festival.
- 8:21They were the Sunday night, you know, sending everyone home
- 8:23happy. And they did.
- 8:25There were parts where it was just one gigantic sing along
- 8:29everyone knows the words to like their most famous songs.
- 8:32I know you know them as well. And they played all the hits.
- 8:35There was not one that I was like, hmm, I don't think I've
- 8:37heard this one before. Did they close or open with Mr.
- 8:40Brightside? That was like towards the end.
- 8:43Not even an end it was. Like, yeah.
- 8:46Maybe because that was probably too much of A sing along to end
- 8:49on, because I would imagine everybody would be singing to
- 8:51that one because everyone was. Yeah.
- 8:54Oh, yeah. It's it's a classic.
- 8:55Yeah. And they also play the song, a
- 8:57relatively new single maybe from like the last year.
- 9:00The song I really like. And I was singing to Lindo.
- 9:02I hope they play. It's called Caution.
- 9:03And that was like the third song they they came out with.
- 9:06And I was like, oh man, they're hating.
- 9:07Basically all the boxes were ticked for me.
- 9:10I was thrilled. And so was Linda.
- 9:13Really, really fantastic. We'll do another festival in the
- 9:16USI don't know we'd redo ACL. We will go back to Austin though
- 9:20and do a comedy trip and see go to Joe Rogan's comedy Mothership
- 9:24and see some stand up. 100%. Austin itself is beautiful.
- 9:28You have been there now I've seen a little bit of what you
- 9:30saw. We took a walk around the
- 9:31downtown before we went to day two, kind of familiarize
- 9:35ourselves with the place. And I got to tell you, I don't
- 9:38know whether this was your experience as well, but every
- 9:40person that we came in contact with was beyond nice and
- 9:45welcoming. Even when we were leaving, when
- 9:47we were flying home, the airport security actually said good
- 9:51morning. How you doing?
- 9:52Not just passport, like the kind of bullshit you get at Pearson.
- 9:56We didn't get any of that, any of it.
- 9:59It was like, and Linda and I were both like even the the
- 10:02border guards here in Texas were friendly as heck.
- 10:06It was just wonderful. Yeah.
- 10:07Really nice. You can get BBQ at the airport
- 10:09which is so nice because it's it's everywhere in Austin, TX.
- 10:13Yes it is and we did try some BBQ.
- 10:15I had a brisket and some potato salad on our way to the final
- 10:19day of the concert and it was good, I enjoyed it.
- 10:24Could I tell it was Texas? I don't know, it was my first
- 10:26experience. Like other than it being cooked
- 10:28in the state, I don't know what made it Texas to be quite
- 10:30honest. OK, well maybe you'll find that
- 10:32out in a future trip. Yeah, whatever.
- 10:34All right. Yeah, that's a quick Google
- 10:36search. That's no big deal.
- 10:37That's incredible, Barry. I'm so glad to hear it and I'm
- 10:39glad to hear that your music festival days will continue
- 10:42because that's how exciting to me and to all of our audience,
- 10:45who I'm sure is going to want to.
- 10:47Maybe one day you'll organize A2 Shot tour and you'll head down
- 10:50to a music festival. So let some of the audience come
- 10:52and it'll be great. Sure.
- 10:54All right, we got to sounds. Totally manageable.
- 10:57Yeah, we got to fit this in on people's breaks.
- 10:59So that means we got to go to shot #2 and I'm going to keep it
- 11:03non alcoholic again with my orange.
- 11:06This is orange kool-aid to be specific.
- 11:08If you've got a little bottle at home empty, you fill it up with
- 11:11some squeezy, you put some water, you shake it and it's
- 11:14ready to go. What have you got, Barry?
- 11:16There you go. I'm sticking with the pre
- 11:18workout, Jay, because I got a big lift as sorely needed one
- 11:21after three days of debauchery under the Texas sun.
- 11:24So here's to you. Cheers and you.
- 11:29All right, so catch me up on what you've been doing.
- 11:32Well, let me tell you about something that arrived at the
- 11:34mini mansion not too long ago. I'm going to hold it up, you
- 11:36know about it, and I'm going to let our audience know it is the
- 11:41Nightmare on Elm Street Seven Film 4K set.
- 11:46Now I got the first movie on your recommendation when I came
- 11:51down to a really cheap price and we knew that Part 2 was coming
- 11:54out in time for Halloween. I don't think anybody suspected
- 11:58was that you were going to get all 7 films in a set.
- 12:01Then there's also a steelbook version.
- 12:03That's a lot of money that I wasn't interested in paying that
- 12:05much money for. But I am happy to say that in
- 12:07this set, you also get the commemorative 3D glasses that
- 12:14were available at the theater for Freddy's Dead because there
- 12:18was a portion of the Freddy's Dead final nightmare where it
- 12:21was actually in 3D. And if you can believe it, I
- 12:24actually have my original 3D glasses from the movie that I
- 12:27keep in a comic books. I have a 3D comic book.
- 12:29I have my Freddy's Dead glasses that I had at the theater there
- 12:33because at that time, the 3D that was available was the blue
- 12:36and blue and red, kind of the cheap 3D that they did.
- 12:40Anyway, I have watched most of Nightmare on Elm Street 2,
- 12:45Freddy's Revenge. I put that in last night.
- 12:47I'll put the rest in tonight when we're done with the show.
- 12:49And I have to tell you, I was expecting it to be good quality,
- 12:54but I thought they were going to pour all of the energy of their
- 12:574K into the first one and then kind of, you know, Halo it
- 13:00through and go. The other ones were also pretty
- 13:01good. No, no, no.
- 13:03This is the best you have ever seen.
- 13:05A Nightmare on Elm Street, Part 2.
- 13:07Super crisp the sounds are coming from all around ya it's
- 13:10not an atmos track, but it's a 5.1 enhanced track and it looks
- 13:14incredible. It's just crystal clear.
- 13:16You can't believe this thing was shot in 1980.
- 13:19I'm forgetting the exact year now or I've I'm not it sounds.
- 13:23Writer, maybe even 2. Yeah, it might have been earlier
- 13:27than that. Yeah, it's but it was was really
- 13:30good. And from being about halfway
- 13:32through the movie, I can tell you that, you know, they they
- 13:35made the comment that this was the most homoerotic of all the
- 13:411980s horror films, and it's living of all.
- 13:45Time. Of all time and it's living up
- 13:47to a type because there there's a lot of that going on.
- 13:50So within the confines of it's interesting because you would
- 13:54still get, you know, non gay people that would go see this
- 13:58because it was the sequel to this hugely popular movie that
- 14:02took off. And you want them to be able to
- 14:04come in and go out and go, what did I just watch?
- 14:05And they would be kind of, they'd probably go, yeah, there
- 14:07was a lot of dudes asses in this movie.
- 14:09And they would be right. And it was interesting that I
- 14:12was telling you I hadn't seen this thing in years and years.
- 14:14And it resonated with me when I was young going.
- 14:17I really like this installment. And now, yeah, now, Barry, I can
- 14:21tell you I understand. Yes.
- 14:24Do you? Do you make it all the way to
- 14:25the shower sequence? Because that's where you get to
- 14:27see all those butts. I did, yes.
- 14:30Yeah, that's a bit of AS and M kind of shower thing where the
- 14:34the coaches first he runs into the the lead actor.
- 14:39The lead actor kind of stumbles out of his house and ends up in
- 14:42AS and M club where the gym teacher is frequenting in his
- 14:46S&M outfit. And then the gym teacher makes
- 14:49him run laps at the at the high school and then makes him at the
- 14:53shower. And then the gym teacher is
- 14:54dragged into the shower by Freddie with his with his with
- 14:59skipping rope and he's all tied up in the shower.
- 15:01So yeah, so there's a whole subtext going on there.
- 15:03I didn't remember that last part.
- 15:08I didn't remember that the the whole getting tied up thing, but
- 15:10it's all there. It's all there for you.
- 15:11It's yeah. Yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 15:14seeing it. Is there any grain or is that
- 15:16has that been scrubbed or is it you still get enough grain?
- 15:18Just enough film, just enough, Yeah.
- 15:22And what I find where it works the best is when the grain is
- 15:25on, like the skin tone. So you know, it's, it's a movie,
- 15:28but then like Freddie's sweater just pops.
- 15:30There's like no grain there. There's no, yes, you get like a
- 15:32bit of that grain where you need it, but it is really cleared up
- 15:35and it's really quite an impressive, quite an impressive
- 15:38movie just to visually to look at.
- 15:39And I can't wait to now get to the Dream Warriors.
- 15:43And what I was thinking when you do come over, I may add, because
- 15:46you can buy plastic versions of those 3D glasses.
- 15:49If I get like some nice comfortable plastic versions,
- 15:52maybe we do a Freddy's Dead as one of your ones you watch and
- 15:55we'll pop on those glasses at the same time.
- 15:59Yeah, I'd be up for that. Dude, I do remember that.
- 16:01That's so funny. And when you said Can you
- 16:03believe I have the original? Yes, of course I can believe
- 16:07that you would hold on to something like that.
- 16:08Of course. Now, is Tom Arnold in that?
- 16:10Am I misremembering? Is he?
- 16:12Does he pop up in this thing? Not in that one, Freddie's.
- 16:14Dead. No.
- 16:15OK, maybe. Freddie's dead.
- 16:17I'm not sure, I'm only on Part 2 and I really can't remember.
- 16:20I'm not surprised if he does. I think he is in one of them as
- 16:23a cameo appearance. Yeah, and Johnny Depp also, I
- 16:27think pops up in Freddie's Dead because he was in the first
- 16:29movie, right? He was, yeah.
- 16:30I can't remember. I can't remember any of these
- 16:33movies, really. I vaguely remember Dream
- 16:35Warriors because I saw it so many times and it was just so
- 16:38cool. It was very comic bookie where
- 16:40they all have certain powers when they're dreaming, which
- 16:42was. A That's right.
- 16:43That was what kind of launched the launched the franchise into
- 16:47the stratosphere, because this feels very much Friday the 13th
- 16:50Nightmare LL shoot Part 2 feels very much like a sequel to the
- 16:54first made for less money. You can just tell there's less
- 16:57money involved and it was in three that they really ramped it
- 17:01back up. And also three, I think also
- 17:04brought us, brought the world Patricia Arquette to think that
- 17:07was maybe her first film. Yeah.
- 17:08That's right. So.
- 17:09I think it was, yeah. She definitely had a career
- 17:11after that. That's very cool, man.
- 17:13I'm very excited. And yeah, 100% if you want to
- 17:16set up a time, you know, it's spooky October.
- 17:19We should definitely get a screening of one of those seven
- 17:22because I know you know you're working on 2/3 is going to be a
- 17:26while. It will be for you to get.
- 17:27It will be. Yeah, that's right.
- 17:29But I'll get there. I'll get there, Barry.
- 17:30OK. Well, that's amazing.
- 17:33Great update. Do you have anything else you
- 17:34want to share with our listeners, Jay?
- 17:36I think, you know, I'm just looking at the clock on the wall
- 17:38and I think that's kind of our time.
- 17:40I did have one of the things I'm going to save it for next time.
- 17:43We are actually coming up rapidly on our final episode of
- 17:46the season and that is going to be the our debrief of the
- 17:49whiskey. Global.
- 17:51Event that we talked about a couple.
- 17:52Episodes ago that's. Exciting.
- 17:55And then Season 6 doesn't end after Season 5, folks, We've
- 17:58been renewed. We're heading into Season 6.
- 18:02It's so great when we're in charge of it.
- 18:03We can just keep renewing forever.
- 18:05And we will. Yeah.
- 18:07Well, that's amazing. Jay, thank you very much for all
- 18:10your thoughts on Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2.
- 18:12I'm excited to, you know, for you to get to the end and then
- 18:15tell me how it sits as a complete film because right now
- 18:19you've already gotten up to the shower scene.
- 18:21Yeah, we know there's more. Yeah, I'll let you know.
- 18:24I'll let you know anyway. That sounds always good to chat
- 18:28with you. Listeners, viewers, thank you so
- 18:30much for tuning in as you do each and every week.
- 18:33Next week, we already teased it. We've got the movie guy, Rob
- 18:36Pizzas back. You guys are going to check out
- 18:38Tron Aries, so he'll be on the show to talk about that.
- 18:42And yeah, have a great week. So we'll look forward to seeing
