- 0:00Is consistency something that you keep trying for and just can never
- 0:06seem to figure out or get there?
- 0:09You can't attain consistency, and it's frustrating you, or maybe you've even
- 0:16just given up The problem is probably your definition of consistency.
- 0:22The way that you're picturing it in your mind is setting you up for failure.
- 0:28Hi, I'm Misty Winkler
- 0:30I'm a homeschool mom, homemaker, grandma, and author of the book
- 0:34Simplified Organization: Learn to Love What Must Be Done.
- 0:39I wanna help as many women as possible become competent,
- 0:43cheerful Christian homemakers.
- 0:46If that's you, you've come to the right spot, the Christian
- 0:50homemaking podcast, Simply Convivial
- 0:53Convivial means enjoying life together, and that's the kind of atmosphere
- 0:59that we want to create in our homes.
- 1:02I run Convivial Circle, a community helping women to excel at
- 1:07homemaking and do life cheerfully.
- 1:09And today, I wanted to share a clip with you from one of our weekly
- 1:14seminars in Convivial Circle.
- 1:17This month's monthly topic is consistency.
- 1:21And so in the kickoff seminar for the month, I talked about what consistency
- 1:28really means for us as women, homemakers, mothers, and wives in the home.
- 1:35Consistency does not mean living like a machine.
- 1:40And whenever we let machines inform our productivity analogies, we
- 1:46are going to feel broken because we're comparing ourselves to the
- 1:50wrong mental image, the wrong ideal
- 1:54Let me help you fix that picture in your head of what consistency is
- 1:58supposed to be like and how to make it more like a tree than like a machine.
- 2:06Grab a basket of laundry to fold and let's dig in
- 2:10Speaker 2: August is all about consistency, and we have to get
- 2:15straight what that really means.
- 2:19Because it's so easy when we are setting a goal to be more consistent, we just tell
- 2:30ourselves, "I should be more consistent."
- 2:33Then we start getting the default picture in our brain of what
- 2:41consistency looks like is really a machine-like consistency, right?
- 2:47A machine, a factory machine in, in manufacturing or something,
- 2:54is designed to give evenly spaced exact same results every time.
- 3:04And we live in a mechanical age, we've just been through 100 years of
- 3:11industrialization and mechanization and materialism, which teaches that the stuff
- 3:20you can see and touch is all that's real.
- 3:24There is no spiritual component to the world.
- 3:28All of this creates a set of beliefs and pictures of the universe where
- 3:38the ideal is machine, is machine-like.
- 3:44And we as humans should be striving to become more and more
- 3:50like machines, which is false.
- 3:54But we fall into this picture in ways we don't even recognize because
- 3:59it's just in the air that we breathe.
- 4:02It's in the books that we read or the TV shows that we watch.
- 4:05It's in our vocabulary and our analogies.
- 4:09And in that way, even the word consistency can pick up analogies of the machine
- 4:18And the solution isn't to throw out the
- 4:22word consistency.
- 4:24It's a good word, but it's a word that is multifaceted.
- 4:29It can mean many different things, and consistency for a machine
- 4:33is one thing, but consistency for a human being is another.
- 4:38And it's not like, well, machines are 100% consistent and humans are 80% consistent.
- 4:45The thing is, machines are consistent in this one way, and human beings
- 4:51are consistent in this other way.
- 4:55They have different natures.
- 4:57They're different things.
- 4:59And so consistency for each one is an entirely different thing
- 5:05so consistency for women in particular needs to not be, how am, how am I going
- 5:15to be the same day after day after day?
- 5:19Now, I'm also not myself super into making my plans according to my cycle, and I,
- 5:27I just can't keep track of all that.
- 5:29Like, I have not invested the time to figure all that out.
- 5:35But I do know the days where it's like, "And I need to go to bed today earlier
- 5:40than usual for the sake of everyone."
- 5:42Generally speaking, I can say, "Okay, well, now I know that tomorrow I'm
- 5:48gonna be a little bit out of commission.
- 5:50I'm gonna be more, like, just on the couch doing stuff from the couch."
- 5:55And then I know that that means that next week I'm probably gonna
- 5:58be, like, peak productivity.
- 6:02And so when I'm down with cramps, it's a time to plan the projects
- 6:09I'm gonna work on when I wake up wanting to take on the world.
- 6:13Like, oh, wait, that version of me is coming.
- 6:16It's not now.
- 6:17It's coming.
- 6:18I have a minute where I have a legitimate excuse to just sit.
- 6:23I'm gonna plan for that.
- 6:24I'm gonna read more.
- 6:26And we can fluctuate, and we canâ¦
- 6:30Like, we can enjoy the fact that we fluctuate, that we're not the same.
- 6:35We can enjoy that variety and use it well.
- 6:40We can steward that well so with consistency then, our goal shouldn't
- 6:46be figuring everything out so that we can do the exact same thing every day.
- 6:53And you can see if you think about just how not only do we ourselves personally
- 7:01operate on a cycle, but we also are put in a context where we are caretakers.
- 7:09We're caretakers of the home, which is inanimate, but we're
- 7:14caretakers of the people in our home.
- 7:18And so you have multiple people who are all different, doing different
- 7:25things and not predictable.
- 7:27And so if we get it into our head, and if we are operating as if it is our job
- 7:35to make ourselves and our life and our home consistent, then we are going to
- 7:45focus on controlling other people, because
- 7:49people are variables.
- 7:51And becauseâ¦
- 7:53Well, if consistency, sameness kind of consistency was our goal, we would have
- 7:58to try to orchestrate all of our other people to somehow be the same every day.
- 8:04And that's micromanaging and controlling and generally not helpful or good.
- 8:12And then you can see how, you know, someone who's really
- 8:17into that says, "Well, I can only have one or two children."
- 8:21It's like, because that's about as much variability as I can control.
- 8:28And then you have moms who have large families who realized after about baby
- 8:33three or four, control's not possible.
- 8:36We're not gonna try for that anymore.
- 8:39And sometimes you could dip off the end when, when you realize that you can't have
- 8:44that sameness consistency and you can't control everyone, then the temptation is
- 8:52to just give up and to not do any kind of management because the only kind of
- 8:56management we can think of is control But managing is providing every person in
- 9:06each situation what they need to thrive.
- 9:12Like, what is going to help them long term?
- 9:17That's what I'm going to give them.
- 9:19And we have the experience of being kind of multiple people in one.
- 9:27You know, there's multiple versions of us in a way that there's really not with men.
- 9:32We have all different kinds of mixes that we've experienced at different times,
- 9:39and so even if we aren't in a particular mix moment right now, we kinda, we know
- 9:45how to do it And so you kind of channel that, like, "Nope, this is hardcore mode.
- 9:50This is like brick wall mom moment."
- 9:53And then you're like, "Oh, this is soft mom moment.
- 9:56We need soft place to land."
- 9:58Like engage that mode.
- 10:00And so we adapt to what we see the particular need is right now
- 10:07to the situation, to the person, because our long-term vision is
- 10:14building up people who are capable, thriving, contributing adults.
- 10:23And we do have to keep that goal in mind.
- 10:27Our goal in our homemaking, in our mothering is not right now peace.
- 10:33Peace and comfort right now is a bad goal to control for, to work toward.
- 10:43That's short-term thinking that is going to not pan out very pretty long-term.
- 10:51Always discipline, hard work, good things come by discomfort and sacrifice and
- 11:02effort and inconvenience and prayerful wisdom being exercised in the moment
- 11:14for a long-term payoff that we're looking for, delayed gratification.
- 11:20But if we make our choices based on what's gonna get me the quickest payoff,
- 11:29what's gonna get me to peace and comfort the fastest then we're not gonna get
- 11:35long-term results that are worth having.
- 11:38So we have to keep the mission in mind.
- 11:41Women are just as mission-oriented as men, but we operate in a
- 11:47different way, and we operateâ¦
- 11:51on a different plane Our job is the people job.
- 11:57We're caretakers, connectors, culture makers, tradition makers, and that takes
- 12:07a different mode of being, which is why God created another kind of human being.
- 12:13There's not just one kind, there are two kinds of human beings, men and women.
- 12:18And both are necessary for the world to function, for societies
- 12:25to flourish, and for God's glory to be manifest in the world
- 12:32So when we think about consistency, we don't wanna think about sameness.
- 12:39As we, as homemakers, think about consistency, we wanna
- 12:44think about faithfulness.
- 12:46And this is where stability comes in, steadfastness.
- 12:52And so I think of this as like standing in one place and being rooted.
- 12:58You're rooted in God's word.
- 13:00You're rooted in a mission.
- 13:02You're standing firm so that you're not swayed by the
- 13:09situation, which is the wind.
- 13:11The wind that's going around you is not shaking your core.
- 13:15It's not toppling you over.
- 13:17It's not really moving you, actually.
- 13:20But of course, you're kind of swaying.
- 13:24It ⦠You are moving in one sense, in that top visible portion,
- 13:30it looks like you're moving.
- 13:33But your trunk is in one place.
- 13:35You're rooted in one place.
- 13:37You're not actually moving.
- 13:39No matter how much you're swaying, you're actually sticking with the core.
- 13:45The core is not moving, just the outward elements are moving.
- 13:51That counts as consistency, and we tend to point at all the moving branches and
- 13:56say, "I just want them all to be still."
- 13:59It's like, well, then nothing would be able to be happening in the world.
- 14:02There'd have to be no wind, no atmosphere, no anything, no life
- 14:07for the branches to be still.
- 14:10Every once in a while you might have a still moment, but overall, tree
- 14:14branches are gonna sway in the wind, and they're actually designed to do that.
- 14:19It's not a problem at all.
- 14:22We get weird hangups where we're like, "No, the ideal tree is perfectly still."
- 14:28Like, no.
- 14:29The ideal tree, it's doing what it's made to do there.
- 14:33It's in one place firmly planted, and the branches sway in the wind.
- 14:39That's actually what they're supposed to do And so as we sway in the wind
- 14:45of our day-to-day life, we're adapting and adjusting and giving each person
- 14:50what they need and rolling with the punches and applying our rooted,
- 14:57grounded mission in the world based on how the wind is blowing that day.
- 15:04But we're faithful.
- 15:06We're staying in one spot.
- 15:07We have one mission.
- 15:09We have one God that we are keeping our eyes on.
- 15:13And so everything else we can adapt to and work with, when we're all
- 15:18just working with it faithfully
- 15:21All kinds of things can derail the normal plan.
- 15:27And so when the normal routines get interrupted like that, get
- 15:34interrupted with real life, we cannot or should not tell ourselves
- 15:41this means I'm not consistent
- 15:44' cause it's not true.
- 15:45If your child wakes up with wet sheets on the bed, and so you give them a
- 15:52bath and you start the laundry, and that's not something that happens every
- 15:56single day, it's just happening in response to today, you are consistently
- 16:03serving your family and caring for your children according to their needs.
- 16:08You just have to pick things back up again, and you might
- 16:11adjust things when you do that.
- 16:13That is life, and that is stability.
- 16:16When, after a time off for whatever reason, you come back, you come back to
- 16:23putting your plan in place and working it with wisdom and engagement in your life.
- 16:32You're not trying to implement your plans or your systems or your schedule
- 16:39like a- a straight jacket that you're trying to suit yourself and everyone
- 16:45else into But you're using it and applying it with wisdom and attention
- 16:52Yes, Stacy says, "I often think that if it doesn't happen at the same time
- 16:57every day, then I'm not being consistent.
- 17:00But I can get up early to drop my boys off for a hike and come back home and make
- 17:04my bed and do my morning routine, or even sit and enjoy coffee before that too."
- 17:09Yeah.
- 17:10Like, you know what your morning routine is, and you know it happens in the
- 17:14morning, but today I had to be out of the house before that, which is not normal.
- 17:19That doesn't mean that I don't have to do the morning routine or that it ⦠Y-
- 17:22you're actually being consistent if you do it at a different time.
- 17:28That's more consistent because you're following through anyway.
- 17:35You're coming back to it anyway, not only doing it when circumstances are ideal.
- 17:42And same with the Bible reading as well.
- 17:45It's so easy to think like, "Well, this is my time.
- 17:48This is when and where, and it's all set up, and unless this happens,
- 17:52it's just not gonna happen at all
- 17:54That desire for it to be the same is actually what's preventing consistency.
- 17:59You say, "Well, this is consistency and I can't have it."
- 18:03It's like, yeah, you can't have sameness.
- 18:05That's not gonna happen.
- 18:08And you don't need it either.
- 18:10Consistency is coming back to do the most important things, following
- 18:15through when you're able, as soon as you're able, like, when it makes sense.
- 18:22It's doing it anyway in less than ideal circumstances.
- 18:27It doesn't really matter what the ideal time is.
- 18:30If you did it at a less than ideal time, you are being more consistent Because
- 18:37you're following through, you're sticking with it, you're putting first things first
- 18:43And that is going to give you more follow-through over time than trying to
- 18:49orchestrate ideal timing day over day.
- 18:54You don't need ideal timing.
- 18:56That's not a requirement for consistency.
- 19:00The requirement for consistency is coming back to follow through on
- 19:07what you need to follow through on
- 19:09A super helpful thing to continue to practice our
- 19:12consistency on is the daily card.
- 19:15We just finished a month of our daily card challenge, and if you keep
- 19:21practicing that with consistency, which is still the same as last month
- 19:27Not same as in every single day, right?
- 19:31But last month you completed the challenge if you made a card 20 days out of 31 days.
- 19:39That's consistent.
- 19:41Doing it 20 days out of 31 requires consistency.
- 19:45Same thing for August.
- 19:47Keep consistently making your daily card.
- 19:51Whether or not it happens at the ideal time, whether or not you have to remake
- 19:55it halfway through the day, consistently
- 19:58time after time, day over day, come back to the daily card.
- 20:04If you don't make one one day or two days or three days, come back to the
- 20:11daily card, and that's consistency
- 20:14so there at the end of this abridged version of the workshop, I talked about
- 20:20being consistent with the daily card.
- 20:23I have a free training called From Overwhelmed to Organized, the
- 20:30one practice that makes all the difference, and a little heads up,
- 20:34that one practice is the daily card.
- 20:36If you want to get more consistency in your life, if you wanna feel
- 20:42more organized without being overwhelmed and without trying to
- 20:45control your life and everyone in it, then this workshop is for you.
