Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Raymond Nonnatus, August 31 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. On September 24 she will celebrate the apparition of Mary herself who was the foundress of this religious family. Saint Raymond had never known his mother of whom he was prematurely deprived by death. He implored the Virgin to adopt him as her son. Mary herself one day revealed to him that to please her he was to devote himself to the ransoming of captives. He immediately renounced worldly riches and determined only to use them to help his neighbor, he enrolled himself in the order of Our Lady of Mercy and was sent to Africa with the mission to ransom Christians who had fallen into the hand of the Mohammedans.

He delivered a great many and gave himself up as a hostage so as not to expose to apostasy those who remained behind unransomed. His mouth was closed with a padlock which cruelly pierced his lips and he was thrown into a narrow cell. He died in the year of our Lord, twelve hundred and forty. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.

The introit. Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels. The law of God rules in his heart. Allay thy impatience with the wicked.

The law of God rules in his heart. The Collect. Let us pray. O God, who didst make blessed Raymond thy confessor, wonderful in delivering thy faithful held in captivity by the infidels, grant us by his intercession that being loosed from the bonds of our sins, we may with quiet minds perform those things which are pleasing to thee through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.

A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. Blessed is the man who lives unreproved, who has no greed for gold and puts no trust in his store of riches. Show us such a man and we will be loud in his praise. Here is a life to wonder at. A man so tested and found perfect wins eternal honor.
• 4:25
He kept clear of sin when sinful ways were easy. Did no wrong when wrong lay in his power. His treasure is safely preserved in the Lord's keeping and wherever faithful men are met his almsdeeds will be remembered. The gradual. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree.
• 4:56
In the house of the Lord he shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Lebanon to proclaim thy mercy in the morning and thy truth in the night. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed is he who endures under trials. When he has proved his worth, he shall win the crown of life. Alleluia.

A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, your loins must be girt and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men awaiting their master's return from my wedding feast so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks at the door. Blessed are those servants whom their master will find watching when he comes. I promise you, he will gird himself and make them sit down to meet and minister to them. Whether he comes in the second quarter of the night or in the third, blessed are those servants if he finds them alert.
• 6:19
Be sure of this. If the master of the house had known at what time the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and not allowed his house to be broken open. You too then must stand ready for at what hour you think not, the son of man will come. The offertory. My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

The Secret. In memory of Thy Saints, O Lord, we present Thee the sacrifice of praise by which we trust to be delivered from both present and future evils through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.
• 8:14

• 8:39
