- 0:00Speaker 1: Now here is this is exciting. Sammy brew is here
- 0:05Speaker 1: with us in the studio along with Darren Piccoli from
- 0:08Speaker 1: the State Room and the stateroom, presents in the Commonwealth
- 0:11Speaker 1: Room and all all those things that he does. And Sammy,
- 0:14Speaker 1: we met you. Do you have any Gina woman?
- 0:17Speaker 2: I have it right here.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I just reposted it.
- 0:19Speaker 4: How many years ago.
- 0:20Speaker 5: Twenty fifteen when you were thirteen.
- 0:24Speaker 4: And it was up at Weaver State, Yes, and you came.
- 0:28Speaker 6: You guys were snooping around with the I R S
- 0:30Speaker 6: that you guys were like, he's so young.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Do you pay taxes to the IRS?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I was like, we just wanted to make sure everything
- 0:38Speaker 1: was on the up and up. So Sam has continued
- 0:43Speaker 1: his career as a musician in the I guess, I
- 0:47Speaker 1: guess we call it a folk style of yeah, yeah,
- 0:50Speaker 1: yeah totally. And Sam, you lived in Nashville for a while,
- 0:54Speaker 1: but you're back right living in Ogden. Yep, I'm back
- 0:57Speaker 1: in o Town and he's Sam is doing a show
- 1:02Speaker 1: this when is it during this Friday?
- 1:03Speaker 2: This Friday at the State Room.
- 1:05Speaker 1: At the State Room, tell us about this project that
- 1:07Speaker 1: you you were good friends with justin towns Earl.
- 1:11Speaker 6: Yeah, so I actually met Justin at the State Room
- 1:15Speaker 6: when I was eleven years old and I wasn't old
- 1:20Speaker 6: enough to see the show, and so he.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Uh, embry juice only for you.
- 1:23Speaker 6: Yeah, he came out and signed my guitar, and I
- 1:27Speaker 6: think he just took to me just because ever since
- 1:30Speaker 6: I started, I've been just trying to emulate and rip
- 1:34Speaker 6: off and copy at Justin Town's earl.
- 1:37Speaker 4: And you this is him, by the way, Justin Town's Earl.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Stands.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So you've got a project you're working on at your
- 1:49Speaker 1: album called the Journals?
- 1:52Speaker 4: What is that all about?
- 1:55Speaker 6: H So pretty much we were talking to Justin's why
- 2:00Speaker 6: Jen and I had written a song about Justin called
- 2:05Speaker 6: for Justin about two years after he died, and just
- 2:10Speaker 6: because when he died, I stopped playing folk music for
- 2:13Speaker 6: a minute, you know, I wanted to scream and plug
- 2:17Speaker 6: in an electric guitar and blow my ear drums and.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You know. And so it took me about two years
- 2:23Speaker 3: to write this song.
- 2:24Speaker 6: And when I did, I sent it to Jen and
- 2:27Speaker 6: I was like, hey, I want to put this out
- 2:28Speaker 6: and like, have you on the Masters? And you know,
- 2:31Speaker 6: I just want to help in any way I can.
- 2:33Speaker 6: And she was like, well, I got a box full
- 2:37Speaker 6: of his journals that I've been scrounging up and you
- 2:41Speaker 6: should come take a look at him. And so, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 6: this album consists of lyric sheets that I found, finished
- 2:49Speaker 6: songs that didn't have any chords or recordings.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Any journal entries in there as well.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Journal entries.
- 2:56Speaker 5: There's just you know what a gift that yeah liked.
- 3:03Speaker 6: It's it's kind of been a surreal thing. You know,
- 3:06Speaker 6: it's been getting trippy recently, like looking at these journals
- 3:10Speaker 6: all day and then having these dreams about towns and
- 3:13Speaker 6: waking up and becoming a better writer.
- 3:16Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's it's like.
- 3:17Speaker 6: A true like college experience, Like you can't even pay
- 3:22Speaker 6: for that experience.
- 3:24Speaker 1: You're trying to raise some money on gofund me, and
- 3:28Speaker 1: what will become of that money.
- 3:30Speaker 3: So that's just.
- 3:33Speaker 6: So we have the album recorded. We recorded it in
- 3:35Speaker 6: muscle shoals with that money. We still have a little
- 3:38Speaker 6: leftover that its just in a savings account. And you know,
- 3:44Speaker 6: right now we're in talks with a couple of different
- 3:47Speaker 6: labels and companies who want to help put it out
- 3:50Speaker 6: and who have worked with Justin And you know, any
- 3:55Speaker 6: money we raise right now, it's just going to go
- 3:57Speaker 6: towards budget that a label has or something.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And just now, what's the show at the State Room
- 4:05Speaker 1: on Friday? What's happening with that, Darren? What's it? It's
- 4:09Speaker 1: not just Sammy, right.
- 4:10Speaker 7: No, Sammy's got a ton of guests for it at
- 4:13Speaker 7: twenty or so or something like that.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a tribute show. We're gonna jam. Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 3: you wounded up all these people with the help of
- 4:20Speaker 3: a bunch of people.
- 4:23Speaker 6: But we're gonna play a bunch of Justin Town's earl
- 4:26Speaker 6: songs with bands and solo artists, and then I'm gonna
- 4:30Speaker 6: play some songs from this new record in the middle, and.
- 4:34Speaker 7: We're gonna raise We're gonna raise some funds for for
- 4:36Speaker 7: Justin's family. We're gonna have some charity arms for uh.
- 4:41Speaker 7: You know, every dollar of the ticket purchase is going
- 4:43Speaker 7: to go to various local charities as well.
- 4:45Speaker 4: So this will probably sell out at the State Rooms.
- 4:48Speaker 2: It's getting close already out sell it.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So if you want tickets to see this, it's this
- 4:51Speaker 1: Friday at the State Room. Justin left behind Uh a.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Wife and daughter? Is that right?
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah? And and where are they and where are they
- 5:02Speaker 1: in Nashville?
- 5:02Speaker 6: Or uh, they're they're.
- 5:06Speaker 3: A stay a state away. I don't know if they
- 5:09Speaker 3: want me to say yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Uh so, uh, this is Friday the Uh. This is
- 5:16Speaker 1: twenty different performers, so.
- 5:18Speaker 4: That's a lot. Everybody gets to do a half a song.
- 5:23Speaker 7: It's a busy stage, but it works out. We've had
- 5:25Speaker 7: a couple tributes in the past, and you know, the
- 5:28Speaker 7: local community of musicians is pretty amazing, and you know
- 5:31Speaker 7: when people get together for this type of thing, and
- 5:33Speaker 7: you know, Samy's been such He's been such a tight
- 5:36Speaker 7: woven piece of the fabric of local musicians, and I
- 5:39Speaker 7: think a lot of us older folks are really excited
- 5:42Speaker 7: to see him, you know, really maturing and becoming a
- 5:45Speaker 7: force in music here. And it's a He's a special
- 5:47Speaker 7: gift for Utah, So people should definitely come in.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Jock now, sam Sammy Brew, you you have a guitar?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Are you just carrying that so as a proper you
- 5:56Speaker 1: plan on using it here?
- 5:58Speaker 3: I always got it on me just in case.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Another We're back with Sammy Brew and Darren from the
- 6:06Speaker 1: State Room is here with us as well, and Sammy is.
- 6:12Speaker 4: A fellow Ogden Nite. I was born and raised in Ogden,
- 6:15Speaker 4: as well.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And Sammy was mentored by Towns van zandt I'm a
- 6:23Speaker 1: town's earl, Justin Justin town's earl and who passed away. Yep, yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 1: accidental it' says drug overdose.
- 6:34Speaker 4: At the he's still very young, thirty thirty eight, thirty eight.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But Sammy, he took you under his wing kind of
- 6:45Speaker 1: and and helped you along with your career, right.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Oh, totally. The first kind of push he ever did
- 6:54Speaker 6: to help me was he put me on the cover
- 6:57Speaker 6: of one of his records.
- 6:58Speaker 3: A single single.
- 7:00Speaker 6: He was like, he was playing at the Gallivan Center
- 7:03Speaker 6: and got me tickets and said he wanted to tell
- 7:07Speaker 6: me something and and he was like, I want you
- 7:10Speaker 6: to play little Justin in this photo. And because of that,
- 7:14Speaker 6: New West Records heard of me in Nashville and I
- 7:17Speaker 6: got a record deal that way. And and then when
- 7:19Speaker 6: I got a record deal, he took me on tour
- 7:22Speaker 6: and and you to open for him? Yeah, I got
- 7:26Speaker 6: to open for him. I you know, I literally had
- 7:30Speaker 6: a company invest in my music because of him. You know.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Now there's going to be a show this Friday night
- 7:37Speaker 1: at the State Room, and it's twenty different musicians from
- 7:43Speaker 1: are they all local folks or just yep, yeah, all
- 7:45Speaker 1: local musicians. And it's a kind of a tribute to
- 7:49Speaker 1: to Justin Town's earl. And Sam's done a record called
- 7:55Speaker 1: The Journals, which is it hasn't been.
- 7:57Speaker 6: It's kind of in limbo right now. We're just we're
- 8:00Speaker 6: finding the right partner to help us push it.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Now you're gonna do a song for us? And what
- 8:06Speaker 4: is the song?
- 8:08Speaker 6: So this is it's called Lord. I'm ready now. You know,
- 8:14Speaker 6: a lot of the Journals is his lyrics. But since
- 8:17Speaker 6: I had him, I've always wanted to write with Justin,
- 8:21Speaker 6: So I took it on to myself to write a
- 8:24Speaker 6: couple of songs with with his lyrics.
- 8:26Speaker 4: So this is some of his lyrics with with your
- 8:29Speaker 4: own editions.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and.
- 8:32Speaker 6: I don't know, this is just kind of like the
- 8:33Speaker 6: crowd stopper every time. This has been a song for
- 8:36Speaker 6: a year and a half and I'm still not sick
- 8:38Speaker 6: of it.
- 8:51Speaker 8: I've traveled down a thousand lonesome roads. I've been lost
- 8:57Speaker 8: and found, and that's all that you've been to, Old Lord.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I'm ready, now, ready, now, Lord.
- 9:06Speaker 8: Come take me, now take me now. I've flown in
- 9:12Speaker 8: planes and I've traveled across the sea falling in love.
- 9:18Speaker 3: You've taken people close to me.
- 9:21Speaker 8: Lord, I'm ready, now ready, Now.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Lord can take me, Now.
- 9:28Speaker 8: Take me now. I've talked to God, I said, sometimes
- 9:35Speaker 8: I regret, but I beat the odds. This guitars all
- 9:40Speaker 8: I got left.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Lord, I'm ready, now ready, now.
- 9:47Speaker 8: Lord, come take me, Now take me now. I've sing
- 10:03Speaker 8: some songs for the rich and poor like I've opened
- 10:08Speaker 8: up some hearts and I've opened up some eyes.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Lord.
- 10:13Speaker 8: I'm ready, now ready, Now Lord can take me, Now
- 10:19Speaker 8: take me now. I've made mistakes and I've made my mins.
- 10:29Speaker 8: I've built a family and I've lost a lot of friends. Lord,
- 10:33Speaker 8: I'm ready, now ready, Now Lord can take me, Now
- 10:40Speaker 8: take me now, Lord, I'm.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Ready, now ready.
- 10:46Speaker 8: Now Lord can take me. Now take me now.
- 10:51Speaker 4: A mighty fine good time for another one. One I
- 11:04Speaker 4: wish we had.
- 11:04Speaker 5: No No, you'll have to go buy tickets and see
- 11:09Speaker 5: the rest of the show Friday.
- 11:11Speaker 4: It's just a small taste.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You can just go to the Stateroom Presents dot com

- 11:27Speaker 1: profit from his album goes directly to Jen and Eda,
- 11:31Speaker 1: Justin's wife and daughter.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Nice to see you again, Sam.
- 11:34Speaker 9: I mean good to see what because Gina showed us
- 11:36Speaker 9: this picture and you were thirteen, that's when we first
- 11:40Speaker 9: met you, back when you were cute. And then I
- 11:47Speaker 9: hear the stories about the things that you're doing, and
- 11:50Speaker 9: I think about that thirteen year old kid, and I
- 11:52Speaker 9: was like, just like, you guys, help the way.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Well, it was interesting.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I remember when we met you that day at an
- 12:00Speaker 1: then you played a song and I just went.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Oh what you floored the entire.
- 12:07Speaker 3: The entire room was just like with their mouths hope.
- 12:09Speaker 4: But just like what this is coming out.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Of this special talent.
- 12:12Speaker 7: I mean, it's you know, that's what Justin saw and
- 12:14Speaker 7: it's I think it's really great that you're you're continuing
- 12:17Speaker 7: his legacy.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Here's a couple of quick texts.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Quinn in Sunset says, this song has me staying in
- 12:23Speaker 5: the car instead of going inside, and there may or
- 12:26Speaker 5: may not be a little tear in my eye. Somebody
- 12:30Speaker 5: else SA's beautiful song.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Brought tears to my eyes.
- 12:32Speaker 4: So now we just have to wait for the album
- 12:34Speaker 4: to come out to own this song.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Yeah, come to a live show. I'm always I'm always
- 12:40Speaker 3: you playing Ogden a lot, playing Ogden a lot.

- 12:48Speaker 6: I'm if you see me live, I'm playing these justin songs.
