Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good morning, brother.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Morning.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: So today we're talking about uh how to not get yourself kind of stuck or messed up on jobs which are then gonna cause you to um lose a lot of money.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, avoiding job fails.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Yes, avoiding job fails.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Um so uh we just did one where we were uh uh working on doing some exterior work and um we had to paint some exterior doors and stuff, but then uh on the side of this house, uh the client had some I think they had a hurricane or like a tornado that blew stuff into the side of the house and then it chipped away paint that's on I think like aluminum siding.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Yep and they they're not quite ready to do a full repaint of the house, so they were basically had us do a paint match to the old siding color, which is old faded, like completely chalked out paint.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So we did that and we did it with uh Sharon Williams Latitude, which is look we had a chip of it that came off, had it matched, and the match was very close.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So, but you and I have done enough of these where you were like, hey, just do a few sections on the back of the house to see how it looks.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we stopped there because there was a bunch of spots, and we were gonna have to go high up on ladders and things like that.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So, but but and our client was gone, so we had to we couldn't get like final approval on it.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And that's the key is final approval.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: So you're like, hey, just keep it there, have them look at it, and then let us know.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Uh because before when we've gotten paint matches and stuff back in the day, we would just go ahead and do it all, and then they just wanted to get it done.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Just you because you're trying to close the ticket and move on with the the job, and then the problem is if they don't like the match and they don't like how it looks, then you are like kind of screwed because you're kind of on the hook to rectify the situation, or you have more painting to do, or keep working on the match, or something like that.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Do you have to do a change order now to make it right, or was that on us to just eat it for whatever time you put in and the paint you put in too?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Same cost.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So that was uh, and then he looked at it and uh called me yesterday and was like well enough with it, and I gave him the other options of like you he's just kind of biting time until he's gonna pull the trigger on repainting the whole house.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I was like, well, it'll be he's like, it's it the batch was very close.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: It's just the sheen's gonna be off because it's new paint over, I don't know, that siding's been on there for a bunch of years, like over 30 years.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: It's all chalky.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so again, there's no sheen to it, so there's just no that's they don't make it.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: But anyway, in uh in the past, we would have just completed it and then would have rolled the dice to see if he liked it or not.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And then if he didn't, we would be, oh, how do we and it's probably, I don't know, what do you think, 12 hours worth of work or so?
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Like to do all that, like if we're just gonna go and touch up everything.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah 10.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: But it's a de at least a day's worth of work that either we're gonna have to eat or charge extra to him, like when we fix it.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So and that's a tough spot to be.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Yep, yep.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So then and then I think part of a lot of that is just making sure that a lot of painting, especially when they're picking colors or doing something that's finicky, you want to establish expectations of what it's actually gonna look like when it's done.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Uh so that's something that we have become a little more leery of, uh, particularly when people pick like an accent wall or something that was not it's especially when it cues over into like extreme personal preference, where you're like, is this like a taste issue or whatever?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: So we've a couple times we've had it where uh you've got a good one where the doctor's office.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: So didn't you paint it like uh when I first started out the painting, there was a doctor's office that was like a smaller office within a hospital, but there was like a urologist, and he wanted he picked the colors like Josh got a paint on the weekend.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So he wasn't there when I started to paint, and he painted he picked candy shop pink.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Oof.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: And I was like, man, like 22, 23.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: So I just painted the whole thing in the whole weekend, and then I got a call Monday morning, and he's like, Yeah, you're gonna have to paint it next week, and everyone hates this because it was like all of his staff, and it's a lot of women, and they just hated it.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: But it looked like Pepto Bismol.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Nice, and I said, Okay, he's like, Yeah, and then I when I came back, uh, I think his wife was there, the doctor's wife were there.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: She said, Yeah, uh, he's not picking the colors anymore, it's me.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: And then we got a much better color color, and uh everyone was happy.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: But like I could have stopped being like, Hey, do you actually like candy shop pink?
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what I would have done now, or do like a sample area, yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: But like I painted everything, like the common areas, the hallways, and uh so I got I got paid twice for that one.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: That was on him and he knew it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, it's more of just when you when that like intuition of I don't know how like what like it's of like a 50-50 toss-up or like what's the odds of them liking this?
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And if it's a certain percentage in your head, it's definitely worth asking.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And yeah, colors is probably the most uh the thing that we run into the most where we've had a couple where we've just stopped, we've put it on, we're like, ooh, yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Or we'll be like, hey, do you do you want to like check this out?
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And what we started doing, especially on bigger jobs, we're doing like repainting the whole house, particularly if they're going with like they're thinking about taking that color and putting it all over the house.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: We'll buy one gallon, do an area, and then be like, Do you like this?
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: And that way you're you didn't buy 20 gallons based on a color they haven't actually seen in the space yet.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: And that's worked, or we'll paint like a room.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: So if you're painting the height entire.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: You have two gallons for the room.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: We'll just like, okay, we'll paint, you know, do all the prep and everything, do it, and then usually they're not like, I don't like the trim, I don't like the ceiling, I don't like the walls.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: It's usually the wall color that they're having a problem with, uh, which is for us, once the walls are already painted, that's the easiest thing to fix, so to repaint.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: But we used to just be like, get the color selections, buy all the paint up front, so we have it there, and then you roll in and you're like, okay, and they especially if they're around, they start poking their head in, they're like hemming and hauling at the color.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Well, they they keep peak peeking their heads in more than once, and you're like, uh-oh, I don't think they like this.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: And if you've bought like$400 worth of paint,$500 worth of paint, you're like, okay, and then you have to buy all the paint again.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Do you charge them that extra$400,$500?
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Like you should, yep.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: But to avoid that whole awkward situation, we just well, okay, especially for big jobs.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Hey, we just did one or two gallons, and then I'll take an extra trip to the paint store.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sometimes it's worth to worth it to slow the job down a little bit to get approval.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And then if you anticipate that being an issue, what also helps is you just kind of work it into your workflow of be like, hey, we're gonna do ceilings and trim, and then be like, all right, we're gonna start prepping out this other room, you know, throw some of that paint on there, but you you're continuing to progress the job forward, and then once you get your final approvals, then you can you know pull the trigger on rocking everything else out.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: So yeah, and you don't want to get it so you're about to paint the walls, and then you have if it's you, and then if there's other guys too, and everyone has to stop, that's where you're just yeah, just eating it.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Or on like the last day of the job and you can't finish.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially on like I, you know, with bathrooms and stuff like that, where you're you know, you're probably gonna be ripping the walls on the last day, and then if that's a problem where you're like, okay, I'm gonna finish the job today, I've got a scheduled job tomorrow.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: I'm like, da da da da.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And then they're like, I don't like the color, and you're like, Well, that adds about four hours to my day.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: So uh, and then can you charge for those hours?
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and a lot of times it's hard or feels awkward, or they might not be happy.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: So you're trying to make it the protect the customer from themselves, and then uh yeah, it's just it's a bit a lot of judgment you learn over time.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And speaking of judgment, uh someone from the old goo crew, which you can join for free until we hit 150 members, just click the link below.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Hosted on school.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Hosted on school.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Um, our man Ronaldo uh had a question about garage weather stripping and whether he should paint it, replace it, or just a few questions about it.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: So did you want to take that at all, Jeremy?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so uh what he's talking about, and he's got a picture of it here, but it's the you know, when you close a garage door in between the frame and the garage door itself, um, is the there's weather stripping there that kind of it, you know, it just seals the gap between the door and the frame.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Um, and the one that he has got a picture of, he's got to paint the frame and the door.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and he's wondering about whether or not he should replace the weather stripping or paint it.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Uh the issue is the when you paint the weather stripping, a lot of times it can crack just because it flexes so much uh when the door like rubs up into it.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Um also on a lot of like DIY channels, the one I forget the one guy's name, but he's the Canadian fellow that everybody feels like is their dad.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: That fella.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Um who's got he's got good videos, but he'll uh he's like, well, obviously you're gonna like take off the weather stripping and just replace it.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, that's now you're getting into like carpentry and things like that.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: So if you're comfortable doing it, you know, a better look is to probably pull the stripping, do the painting, and then reinstall new weather stripping, and you'll probably go with you're just limited in your in your colors, so it's gonna be probably like black, brown, or white, or like maybe an off-white, so it just depends on the color ways of doing that.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and then the Ronaldo was saying he's like, I'm trying to like systematize things so I don't overthink it.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And I guess my our take on it when we were chatting about it is it it on certain things, like how many garage doors are you painting?
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Like, is it are you doing like did you get a contract to do them all in a neighborhood?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: So you have to systematize it, yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Or can you just spend a little bit more time on the front end of your estimate, ask some questions to the homeowner and explain your concerns about it, and then be like, it's all about just establishing the correct expectations of what it's gonna look like when you're done.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: So he's gonna spray that door, I'm sure it'll look awesome.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Uh um, he's just gotta figure out the questions from that's all stuff you could just work out with the client and then just charge accordingly.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna if you're gonna replace the stripping, then include the cost of the weather stripping, you know, however much that is, and then the install.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Because now you're talking install work.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: That's not like and then can you get the exact same weather stripping?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Does it fit exactly?
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Usually they're like standardized widths on those garages, and I I looked at it as a pretty standard setup.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Um, you just want your work to look good at the end, so you just explain to the client, like, hey, I can do this.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: I've painted these before, they don't crack out, they do crack out, but these these are my concerns.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: And then you could give pricing to be like hey, if you want this installed, it's this.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it costs an extra, what you know, whatever that would take.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Or I, you know, he's you basically have three options.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can get new weather stripping, you can paint the old weather stripping, or you can not paint the old weather stripping.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you could put itemized costs for each.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Hey, if I paint the weather stripping, it's 300 bucks.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: If I get new weather stripping, it's 400 bucks.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I'm just picking these prices out of thin air.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Um, so they know, and then they're not like thinking it's all included in your price to paint the garage door.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And you're your his cost for like you could separate that out in your estimate uh if you just had like because you his his I bet he knows how much it's gonna how much long it's gonna take to actually just paint the garage and the frame.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So he's probably got that locked down.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: So now you're just dealing with a way smaller number of the weather stripping and the install and that.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So that could be very yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: You you I if I was doing this estimate, I would say like all the work for painting the garage door and the frame, that would be one price.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And then I would itemize and say, like, you know, replace the weather stripping, paint the weather stripping, don't paint the weather stripping.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: And have a have a price for all of those.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: The knot paint's the easiest.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: It's like yeah, yeah, it's nothing more.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Zero.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, it would probably be zero because you would just you that the cost in the first line item of painting the door.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Really, it's just yeah, it would just be two.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Replace it or paint it, would be your additional charges.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: And if you don't paint it, it's easier to paint it later.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Versus vice versa, like, oh, I don't like a paint.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Oh crap, we're committed.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's painted.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Because those are things where you could be like, hey, I didn't paint the you know, I guess if he's spraying, that would be a little annoying if you were doing that.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: But um a lot of times in some of the videos that I see online that are tutorials for painters, they will like, especially for coming from the DIY space, sometimes they do like way over the top prep work and just assume it's gonna be an easy process, like tearing out and then tacking back in weather stripping.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: It's not the hardest thing to do, but it's not generally what painters it's outside of the purview of just painting the surfaces, so it's especially with old weather stripping.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if it's old and beat, sometimes that can take a long time.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if it's brand new, piece of cake.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so but this isn't the kind of weather stripping you like pull out, it's nailed, it's nailed into the frame.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, you're right.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: So like you gotta use a pry bar and peel it all off and then re-tack it.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: So now you're getting into like kind of the carpentry zone of things.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Some guys are more comfortable with that than others.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: So just to be.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Every job's gonna have different inclusions, exclusions, prep wear client colors.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: That you know, it's that's just part of it.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: It's part of doing paint work.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: So the finicky ones are annoying.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: You just want to clarify things as much as you can on the front end so that everyone has proper expectations, and then you can meet or exceed those expectations.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: And then I did get back to him and I said, Hey, when you're done the door, post it in the group.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: And I mentioned that because we're running a fun, friendly competition.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: If you post in the goo crew before and after pictures of a job that you've completed or someone on your cruise completed, uh, get a chance to win$50 Amazon gift card.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Can I post?
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: No.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: You can't be an owner of the group.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: But guys in the group, so guys started to post more and uh seen some cool projects.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: I don't like this competition.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: It's like it's our money that's going to them.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: It's a rigged game.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Trying to get some of that Amazon money.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: I could buy some stuff.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: No, that's cool.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: So, but uh, we have post, we like seeing what everybody's doing, and then uh yeah, I'm sure the the door will turn out fine.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: But I can almost guarantee I think I've seen the tutorial that is prompting this thing.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: I just came up with my feed the other day.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, did it?
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Because it's just like, just take it out and spray it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: And then it's like I'm like, there I would almost guarantee he's got another crew there that's actually doing the work.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Do you remember that time we we worked on that show?
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we did it, yeah.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: It was uh was it fix this yard or for Yeah, it was and it uh the show got cancelled before they aired the episode we were doing.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we shot something for TV once.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well this was years ago.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Years ago.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: They they they reached out, and this was like pre-us doing anything online, but they were uh some kind of it was like the peak of the HG TV shows that were like fix 'em up things, and then they were like, hey, can you paint this thing?
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And then we had to like uh the deal was we didn't get paid.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: We didn't get paid.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: We had one day to paint the front of a house.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: It was a smaller house, yeah.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: But he's like, all you need to do is make it TV ready.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: We said, What do you mean?
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: He's like, you don't need to do prep.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't need to like caulk in anything, and we'll record you painting, and they had like a big, massive camera.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: But we just got one day to blow it out.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: And so you and me, we did it.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: They had a big camera, they filmed us, and it was crazy because we didn't prep at all.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Because we were like, all right, guys, good, start painting.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, there's like we could caulk, like, just go.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were like they basically said action, and then they're like, do a bad job now.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: And we're like, okay, and then we painted, and then dude, I you're that was that was a weird experience because you they had like the locked-off shot, and then they had a guy with a camera who was getting close-ups, and then uh I think they just left us with the camera on uh for a while, and then we did all the work, but then we didn't get paid, and then they said it was supposed to like drive business.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they will get a mention in the show credits of like, hey, it's uh you know, handiworks painting.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: And then the show got canceled before our episode came out.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then then he called me again to say, Hey, would you do uh would you want to do another one?
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: I said, dude, we didn't get any business, we didn't make any money, and the job looked terrible.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: He's like, Oh, okay.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: He's like, I'm just having trouble getting guys to do this.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: I said, You think?
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, working for free, working for free and not getting any business from it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: What's the win?
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Just like in free labor.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, okay, yeah, that's I understand why I got canceled.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then uh from filming paint stuff, I definitely know like the camera does not pick up a lot of the stuff that your eye's gonna pick up, no matter how good the resolution is, because you because the way you like light it and all these things, they can do do a lot of shenanigans.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I think they must have been shooting in Philly because I got another call.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know if if it was through a realtor, that same connection.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Hey, can you come paint this house?
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: We just had it done for TV, but it's it was only TV ready.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was an interior.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I went and looked at it, and it was intricate trim work, but it was the worst paint job ever.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And so it was gonna be several thousand dollars to repaint it, and they didn't hire us.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know if they went with someone else, but they're like, Oh, I I don't know if they had, you know, they had the money to actually make it look good for real life and not just TV.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: So just if you're watching any of those shows, sometimes it's a little uh they play a little loose and fast with it actually being finished.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: And a lot of times they're bringing in crews after the fact to actually do so.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: That was those shows.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: I can't speak for all the other shows.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: I'm sure some do a great job and all of that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: We can't talk ish on Chip and Joanna Gaines.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: My six-year-old daughter loves watching them.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, I feel like they're doing that.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think they're good.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: The show that we were on was not not Chip and Joanna.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: They're the gold standard.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was that was a real Jezz show we were on.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: So but uh anyway, well that that footage is somewhere.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that was a yeah, we they're like, yeah, good, looks great.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: We're like, really?
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: And they said we're gonna bring in the talent, yeah.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And that was like whoever the host of the show was, yes, to you know, talk to the homeowners and do the whole, you know, dog and pony show that they're doing.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: But they they recorded you or me a couple times with like close-ups on cameras.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: And it was, yeah, we're done.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, have fun, guys.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Yep, paint this house while we're gone for free.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that's a that's uh quite a heavy lift on the production staff to try and book free contractors based on a promise to of future work.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: That that's probably the my least favorite way people try and get like, oh, if you do a good job on this one, there's plenty more than that.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I got plenty more rooms in this house to paint, or I got another house over here that we can paint.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: You're like, that's cool.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: My price is gonna be the same for all that stuff, too.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's uh yeah.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Do you have any other stories about how to like prevent like paint fails on jobs that are gonna be a problem?
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: I got one more that went horribly wrong.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, let's do that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: So, you know, in like um a kitchen, sometimes on the kitchen cabinets they have the pre-finished uh crown molding, and some people like that caulked into the ceiling, some people don't, especially when it's a different color than the ceiling.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: So I went to the client and said, Hey, Mr.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Smith, that's not his name.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna use Mr.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: Smith.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Would you like this caulked in?
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Here's the pros and here's the cons of going either way.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: He said, Yes, please caulk it in.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Caulk in.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: I thought he was happy, it looked great.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: I get a call from our contact who was one of the builders we work for.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Hey, why'd you caulk this in?
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: The guy hates it.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Like, what?
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Who's this?
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: And then I go back and what he does, he changed his mind after I did it all and wanted me to dig out the caulk and repaint the area.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: So I had to go and I spent a lot of time trying to caulk this in and make it look perfect, dig it out with a knife, and then repaint it because I just scratched up the whole ceiling.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: So I dug out all the caulk and had to get like score it multiple times, get a thicker knife because it didn't cut it enough, and I did a good job caulking.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: It was good caulk.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Uh and I was like, it was one of those ones where I was like, dude, just don't call me anytime soon, bro.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I'm not coming back here.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, and I remember that, yeah, because I remember you out hurt.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: And then you came and made your uh comeback on that job.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: I'm like, dude, I'm gonna lose it.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: You need to come help me on this job.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think you guys just bounced out.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: I was like, I got it, because I had to skim out that whole ceiling and stuff.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, they and they added more stuff later, and it was just a mess.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: We did not do well in that job.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: But it was uh yeah, that's the only time I've had it, like they proved it, and I had a witness like our guy Brandon who works with I'm like, yeah, I approved it and he approved it, right?
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And then he liked it and was done.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, changed his mind.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And I didn't know how to charge for that one.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It was like a you know, a friend of the builder took.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Type situation.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: What do I do here?
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And that guy was not a fun client.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: No.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: He was a he was a problem.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Like I would not work for him again.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: No, correct.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: So that was uh it was not a fun time.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: But anyway, that was that was interesting.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: But other than that, I getting their approval is not a hundred percent sure it's gonna work out, but I'd say 99, 95%.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well then you because you you did your due diligence on the front end, and then because we had already kind of established if I were to redo it, I would say if you want the caulk removed, it's gonna cost this much money.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And I think I was just saying, I don't want to piss off people, so I'm just gonna eat it.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: And that's a mistake.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And then you know, if you as I get more seasoned and you have more uh credibility, especially when you have tons of work, yeah, um, you can know like it's it's gonna be an extra three hundred dollars.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and most of the time they'll pay it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: And they understand most people are fair.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: There's a few people who aren't.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: And I think uh and and part of it too is when you're you're trying not to like screw yourself with like scheduling and things as well.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: And so I had a recent experience where I came back from vacation and we were like scheduled to basically do some work and prep an area for built-ins being installed, and I was like, cool, uh, we're gonna we can get in there and do that, and then I really maneuvered my schedule around this to make it as soon as the install was done, we'd come right back and get them back in business in their uh basement in this area and get the it completed, and then we we were hustling to get it all the stuff, and I had to go work a job by myself, which I would have rather had help on, like all this rig and roll.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: I met the client early, did all this stuff, and then the installers changed their install date, and then it was like, Okay, we did all of this and we could have done it, you know.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: If this was a firm date, I could have done it, and then she was, you know, the and they they're very lovely people.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: You're like, Well, can you get it?
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Can you adjust?
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: And I was like, that is when I was like, you know what?
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: My schedule matters a lot too, and I need to keep things like I did my due diligence on this as well, and then I was like, I'm like, you know, I would love to get in there, but we already scheduled work.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: We can't like you know, because it would have been like a calling a client the next day and being like, we can we're not coming today and shifting things.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I'm not doing that.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: We'll come back when they're done, and then we're gonna finish that job today.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: So it's like because also, too, when you when you try and like accommodate people and you're, you know, because we're trying to be smooth operators, work with their schedule, do all these things.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: When it starts eating into the cost of the job, and now you're getting less profitable, because if you have to go set up all your crap multiple times and pull off multiple times, that that's hours of shuttling things up and down a basement, you know, setting up again, clearing out pans, clearing stuff up, versus like setting up once, completing the job, and then have one teardown, one put back, one cleanup.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: It's that those are like kind of the hidden sneaky costs of like, well, it's the job's taking me this, you know, it's the same amount of work, but yeah, but you gotta come back three times.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: It's that's that's money.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: So and I try to avoid that as well, where I'm like, I'm I want this to be smooth, where we're like we made the right call.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: We accommodated in the beginning, and then we're like, okay, here's our schedule set, but we'll finish it at this time.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: And then once you've already been accommodating in the beginning, the client's like, Oh, you you were like you've been trying to work with me, uh, and you're not like you're being a dick about it.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Because then they kind of feel bad because it wasn't their there was something out of the outside of their control.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: The installers were just like, Well, we were just doing it different times.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: I'd say another thing that you've come up with with avoiding fails and unnecessary uh like things is what we do with the prime and first coats that we do behind one of the builders we work behind.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: So like your policy now is because they would be like, oh, just come in.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: If there's all new drywall, no trim, they want us to like do a prime and first coat.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: And what I do is every time we would do that, we end up doing two more coats on top of finish coats.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because they would originally we would they wanted the ceilings completely painted.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: We would do like two coats, like prime everything, and then do two top coats of the ceiling.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: So I noticed I'm trying to we're trying to help out our future selves, and then I noticed like, well, just show me where the cabinets are gonna be, and we'll do the ceiling and walls where the cabinets are gonna be, like the five like the first coats on both, yeah, and that's it.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: We're just trying to help it out on the well, could you paint the whole ceiling?
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: No.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Because we have to do two coats anyway.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: So that was been a big it saves paint, saves time, and uh, I just like it it every time, every time someone's dinging up a ceiling or a wall, we have to do two coats over top, so it does not help us out at all.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: But if you get behind cabinets, that helps.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: So and then you didn't waste time if they even screw like oh, we moved the cabinet or this hat, like it's it's okay.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so pretty much now every time we just do prime and then one top coat of ceiling paint.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Because if you do two coats on the ceiling, then the electrons electric one there.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: We'd only do one coat on the ceiling.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: It's just because it's which is primer.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: It turns into a waste of time.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: So we've we've tried it a bunch of ways, but the week.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: We tried Finn and two coats and they're no one's gonna jack up the ceiling.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: And it always everyone jacks up the ceiling.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Like, I guess no one washed their hands today.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Someone just took a pencil and just drew all over it.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: So measurements.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: All right, guys.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: Well, I think uh anything else, brother?
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: No, sir.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: All right, well, check out the goo crew, and until next time, y'all take it easy, work smart, and have a good one.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Peace.
