- 1:05Thor Challgren: Today it's Friday and it's TGI TED, a feature in the series where every Friday, I look at a TED talk that inspired me.
- 1:15Thor Challgren: This is to celebrate the launch of my own TED talk, which is now available to watch.
- 1:21Thor Challgren: I'll put the link in the description below.
- 1:23Thor Challgren: Also, the show that I'm going to talk, that I'm going to feature today, will also be in the description below, so you can find that the talk that I want to share with you today is a TEDx talk called Programming your Mind for Success.
- 1:38Thor Challgren: It was given by an entrepreneur named Carrie Green.
- 1:42Thor Challgren: This is a talk given at TEDx Manchester.
- 1:47Thor Challgren: So Carrie is British.
- 1:48Thor Challgren: This talk is from nine years ago and she talks about her journey as a college student who started several businesses and then became hugely successful.
- 2:01Thor Challgren: There are three things that I want to share and talk about in this particular episode today.
- 2:05Thor Challgren: The first thing is this is a very engaging talk and opens in a great way.
- 2:12Thor Challgren: She makes the point with the audience in a way that everyone immediately understands why don't I take action?
- 2:20Thor Challgren: What stopped you?
- 2:21Thor Challgren: She says Bottom line.
- 2:23Thor Challgren: As she says, people miss out on opportunities all the time because of what's going on in their head.
- 2:30Thor Challgren: She demonstrates that in a very engaging way.
- 2:34Thor Challgren: I'm not going to give it away, but it's a great open.
- 2:36Thor Challgren: I think you'll really, as you see it, you'll see yourself and everybody in the audience in the way that they react to her question at the open of the talk.
- 2:46Thor Challgren: Great opening really gets in your mind and plants the idea of, okay, this is what we're going to talk about.
- 2:53Thor Challgren: The second point that I really enjoyed in her talk is it's a great example of knowing your own values, the importance of knowing what matters to you.
- 3:04Thor Challgren: She talks about in her talk that she needed money.
- 3:08Thor Challgren: She was around 20 years old.
- 3:09Thor Challgren: She was in law school and she needed money to continue law school.
- 3:13Thor Challgren: She knew that she had to start some kind of business or get some kind of job.
- 3:16Thor Challgren: She ended up starting a business where she unlocked mobile phones.
- 3:22Thor Challgren: This was 2007 and I vaguely remember that that was a thing Maybe it was more of a thing in England where people got phones that were tied to a carrier but they wanted to unlock them because they wanted to travel or whatever.
- 3:33Thor Challgren: Her business was unlocking mobile phones and she was really successful at it and became quite a good entrepreneur.
- 3:42Thor Challgren: But she realized at a certain point she was really successful.
- 3:45Thor Challgren: She was miserable.
- 3:46Thor Challgren: This was not a job that lit her up and she, as she thought about expanding, she started to ask questions of like is this really what I want to do?
- 3:56Thor Challgren: She says that, rather than feel bad about having that job, she said what can I do about it?
- 4:04Thor Challgren: It's a great question.
- 4:05Thor Challgren: Instead of feeling bad, what can I do about it?
- 4:08Thor Challgren: And she realized, as she said, that mobile phone unlocking was not my dream.
- 4:14Thor Challgren: This is an important point.
- 4:18Thor Challgren: She asked and looked at her own life and looked at her own values and what mattered to her.
- 4:22Thor Challgren: I'm reading a book now by John Dem artini called the Values Factor, and he talks about the importance of knowing what you value, then building your life, building the things that you do around what matters to you.
- 4:37Thor Challgren: So I think Carrie's example here is a great way to look at asking the questions of what matters to you.
- 4:44Thor Challgren: The third point that I want to share is she asked those questions, and she realized that she did like being an entrepreneur, but she realized that her journey, her experience, is one where she felt very lonely and isolated, and so what she wanted to do was help other people cope with something that she felt, which was that loneliness.
- 5:05Thor Challgren: So she imagined creating this worldwide community of women entrepreneurs who could help and support each other, and as she thought about this and dreamed of what it would be like, all of these negative thoughts started to flood in, the thoughts that are like well, who am I to do this?
- 5:26Thor Challgren: Why would anyone believe me?
- 5:27Thor Challgren: Why would I be the person to do this?
- 5:29Thor Challgren: If you've ever thought about starting something new, I'm guessing you've probably had exactly those thoughts, and maybe they sounded exactly like what Carrie Greens describes her thoughts.
- 5:41Thor Challgren: As she said, though, that she needed to reprogram her mind, that she had to ignore all of those thoughts and focus on the positive things, and there's a great quote in there that she said that.
- 5:55Thor Challgren: When talking about that, she said I knew that I could stop myself from thinking those things, and I did.
- 6:01Thor Challgren: I replaced the negative, annoying, rubbish thoughts.
- 6:05Thor Challgren: I love this.
- 6:06Thor Challgren: She's British, so she says rubbish.
- 6:08Thor Challgren: I replaced those annoying, rubbish thoughts and told them to shut up and I replaced them with positive thoughts that were empowering me, thoughts that were actually empowering me to move toward my goal.
- 6:21Thor Challgren: That's a quote from her talk.
- 6:23Thor Challgren: Well, how did this work out?
- 6:26Thor Challgren: She built one of the largest online networking groups of women entrepreneurs, with over 100,000 women involved at the time that she recorded the talk.
- 6:36Thor Challgren: I'm sure it's even bigger now.
- 6:38Thor Challgren: She makes clear that the reason that she was successful was that she got unbelievably clear about what she wanted to do.
- 6:49Thor Challgren: If you're looking for inspiration about what you have going on next, this talk by Carrie Green is a great place to start.
- 6:56Thor Challgren: She talks about all of her crazy goals which is her term that she set for herself and then she made happen.
- 7:04Thor Challgren: And when you hear them in the talk, you'll be like, really, she did that, she did it.
- 7:08Thor Challgren: So I have a question for you what are you doing this weekend?
- 7:12Thor Challgren: I suggest watching this talk Super inspiring about what could be next for you.
