Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: We're here at Old Timer's Day in Lakeland with Justin
- 0:05Speaker 1: Berlander man forty three years old. Did you get all
- 0:08Speaker 1: the feels when you came back to Yeah?
- 0:10Speaker 2: I actually did, man, and a lot of nostalgia here,
- 0:13Speaker 2: you know, really more just like driving around the city.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I spent so much time here. I lived here in
- 0:17Speaker 2: the off season for a long time when I was younger.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So pretty cool to be back.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Yeah, when you got that call from Scott Harris and
- 0:23Speaker 1: from the Tigers and then and then you thought, man,
- 0:26Speaker 1: this is gonna happen. What went through your mind?
- 0:29Speaker 2: I don't know, man, There's a lot of a lot
- 0:31Speaker 2: of thoughts, you know, a lot of emotion, honestly, Like
- 0:36Speaker 2: I think it happened so quickly, didn't really have time
- 0:39Speaker 2: to process it. And then once it got announced, just
- 0:41Speaker 2: like the outpouring of people that messaged me was really
- 0:45Speaker 2: what what made it seem so real and hit home
- 0:48Speaker 2: for me.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Was there a little part of you that said, maybe
- 0:52Speaker 3: maybe not, let's see what else is out there, just
- 0:54Speaker 3: because of everything that goes with it, you.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Know, No, I think like I I I really enjoyed
- 1:00Speaker 2: San Francisco last year, that the organization was really classy,
- 1:03Speaker 2: and the guys were awesome, but being West Coast for
- 1:05Speaker 2: the first time, and you know, it kind of felt like, uh,
- 1:10Speaker 2: this year, when I really sat down at the end
- 1:11Speaker 2: of the season and thought about what I wanted to
- 1:13Speaker 2: do next, I thought I wanted to be somewhere that
- 1:15Speaker 2: had some meaning for me, you know, so, uh, you know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: having the opportunity to come back here obviously checked that
- 1:22Speaker 2: box for me.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I had so much history here with the organization, so
- 1:25Speaker 4: I reached.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Out really early on and thankfully by the end, you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it seemed like there was a fit there. And with that,
- 1:31Speaker 2: with that kind of thought in the back of my mind,
- 1:33Speaker 2: I really kind of really kind of chased it.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Is there any chance that you ever signed with the
- 1:37Speaker 3: team that doesn't have orange? Because the time is running out,
- 1:40Speaker 3: like we need something without a little bit of orange?
- 1:43Speaker 5: Just a question?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Uh No, I think at this point I just got
- 1:46Speaker 2: to stick with the orange theme. Yeah, you know, the
- 1:48Speaker 2: the Giants with the cream and the black kind of
- 1:51Speaker 2: threw me. It had been an orange and blue all
- 1:52Speaker 2: before that. So but yeah, it's lately when one team left, So.
- 1:59Speaker 1: You must you must love Halloween.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I have all the guard Yes, I go as myself
- 2:05Speaker 2: what would you What if someone.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Saw you all in all seriousness, So if you walked
- 2:11Speaker 1: around at Halloween and you had a full Tiger's Astros
- 2:14Speaker 1: jersey and it said Verlander on the back, do you
- 2:17Speaker 1: think anybody would stop you and say, are you really think.
- 2:20Speaker 4: It's too on the nose? Yeah? I think they would, Yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 4: you do.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I mean you think people would say there's no way
- 2:25Speaker 1: that Justin Verlander would walk around in a verlind.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Or the Ultimate Trick? Yeah? Yeah, no, I think people would.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It depends on where I would if I did it
- 2:32Speaker 2: in like, you know, Detroit or somewhere you know, somewhere
- 2:36Speaker 2: I'm more recognizable as a baseball player.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you didn't, and where you lived and
- 2:39Speaker 1: in home beach Shooper. Are you don't think anyone would know?
- 2:42Speaker 4: Probably? I think so. I think.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, what if Kate did it?
- 2:46Speaker 4: If she were my jersey?
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:48Speaker 4: I think that also would attract some attaent.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Now, all right, so obviously you don't have your BlackBerry anymore,
- 2:55Speaker 3: you don't have your trans jam anymore from when you
- 2:57Speaker 3: first got called up to the big leagues. But how
- 3:00Speaker 3: much are you like thinking of nostalgic things going back
- 3:05Speaker 3: to Detroit? You haven't been up there for a home
- 3:08Speaker 3: game yet, not even just fans, but just everything that
- 3:11Speaker 3: goes around, like being a Detroit Tiger in the city
- 3:15Speaker 3: of Detroit.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I on one hand, I'm trying
- 3:20Speaker 2: not to think about it too much and just prepare
- 3:21Speaker 2: myself for baseball. But on the other hand, you know,
- 3:23Speaker 2: I take the game mound here for the first time
- 3:26Speaker 2: in Lakeland a week or two ago, and and you know,
- 3:30Speaker 2: the fan ovation was pretty amazing, the outpouring of friends
- 3:34Speaker 2: and family when I signed with Detroit, Like I know,
- 3:36Speaker 2: it's a big deal. A lot lot of old friends
- 3:39Speaker 2: reached out and told me how excited the city was.
- 3:41Speaker 4: So I'm I'm it means a lot to me.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And I think one of the things I'm doing as
- 3:48Speaker 2: I get older is trying to embrace these things a
- 3:50Speaker 2: little bit more and not be so much like a
- 3:52Speaker 2: horse with blinders on and just focus on just just
- 3:55Speaker 2: pitching and being able to take in some of these
- 3:58Speaker 2: moments and be a little more present and and and
- 4:00Speaker 2: so that's something I'm I'm looking forward to.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you when you take the map, when you
- 4:04Speaker 1: take the mouth for the first time in co America,
- 4:06Speaker 1: I'm assuming you guys have six games on the road,
- 4:08Speaker 1: so you're gonna start get your first start back in
- 4:10Speaker 1: Detroit where they're San Diego or Arizona. Fine, but that
- 4:14Speaker 1: first time when you walk out to k America. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: mean I remember when I went back to like Chicago
- 4:19Speaker 1: for the first time. In the ovation you get now
- 4:21Speaker 1: you're you're a way bigger deal. So you're gonna get
- 4:24Speaker 1: a way bigger ovation, which is I don't know that
- 4:26Speaker 1: you're pretty big deal in. But it's all, it's all,
- 4:30Speaker 1: it's all, it's all gonna be love and it's all.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And you walk out there, I mean like I kind
- 4:34Speaker 1: of got tier tier eye. You think that that will happen?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Are you just gonna soak it in? I mean, you
- 4:38Speaker 1: definitely got to go pat tip. I love you guys,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but then you gotta kind of reel it back in.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah after the first bitch, Yeah, definitely.
- 4:47Speaker 2: You know, I I don't know, these things aren't scripted,
- 4:50Speaker 2: as you know, it's just kind of like, uh, I
- 4:52Speaker 2: don't know what's gonna happen for me personally. I I uh,
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think that's one of the things that once you
- 4:58Speaker 2: get more comfortable with your route as a veteran and
- 5:01Speaker 2: know what you need to do to be prepared and
- 5:04Speaker 2: lock it in that that that's why you're able to
- 5:07Speaker 2: take these moments and appreciate them a little bit more
- 5:09Speaker 2: and kind of come out of your shell for for
- 5:10Speaker 2: a period of time and then kind of lock it
- 5:12Speaker 2: back in. So, you know, one of my goals this
- 5:14Speaker 2: year is to just appreciate things and the surroundings a
- 5:17Speaker 2: little bit more than I have.
- 5:18Speaker 5: One of your goals too, is to win.
- 5:20Speaker 3: And that's just the reality of why people why people
- 5:23Speaker 3: get on the field. How does your body feel? How
- 5:26Speaker 3: does the arm field compared to you last year when
- 5:29Speaker 3: you got off to a little bit of a slower start.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, you know, I think last year, coming
- 5:34Speaker 2: off the year before, I think one of the biggest
- 5:37Speaker 2: things for me is to check check the box that
- 5:39Speaker 2: for myself that I could go every five six days
- 5:41Speaker 2: and and kind of reel off a bunch of starts
- 5:43Speaker 2: and just kind of get back into the routina things.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So it took me a little while to kind of
- 5:47Speaker 2: get back into that into that cycle, but once I did,
- 5:50Speaker 2: I felt I felt pretty good.
- 5:51Speaker 4: So I feel like I'm kind of picking up where
- 5:53Speaker 4: I left off.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Things are, you know, it's not as easy to add
- 5:55Speaker 2: forty three to work out the kinks, but you know,
- 5:58Speaker 2: as it was when I was twenty five.
- 5:59Speaker 4: But you know, they work themselves.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Out, and as long as you're kind of able to
- 6:02Speaker 2: go out there and kind of rinse and repeat every
- 6:04Speaker 2: five six days, I think, Uh, you wake up in
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know, the middle of April and towards the end
- 6:08Speaker 2: of April, and you start feeling fresh and good and
- 6:11Speaker 2: your body's getting used to the routine and and so yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 2: that's where we're at right now, just building up.
- 6:15Speaker 4: And like I.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Said, some kinks there for sure, but but uh, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: nothing too bad.
- 6:19Speaker 1: What wou'd you figure out in the second half? Because
- 6:20Speaker 1: your second half.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Some mechanics stuff, you know, I uh.
- 6:24Speaker 1: You've always had really clean mechanics.
- 6:26Speaker 4: But they've changed a lot over the years.
- 6:28Speaker 2: You know, it kind of is always kind of ebbed
- 6:31Speaker 2: and flowing different direct Did I.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Know that was one of the worst things. Well, you
- 6:35Speaker 1: thought you did which made a bad corse.
- 6:37Speaker 5: I did.
- 6:39Speaker 4: I'm always paying attention to that. But but uh, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 4: I think it's just the hitters will tell you.
- 6:45Speaker 2: You know, you work all off season and you can
- 6:47Speaker 2: work on whatever you want. And then you come into
- 6:49Speaker 2: spring training and it's like I've always said this, Uh,
- 6:52Speaker 2: it's just you need you need hitters in the box,
- 6:54Speaker 2: and you need that instinctual recognition from the hitter, like
- 6:57Speaker 2: when they're trying to recognize what which it is, where
- 7:00Speaker 2: it's at in the zone. And you know, you can't
- 7:02Speaker 2: hide those instincts that you've you've you guys have accrued
- 7:05Speaker 2: over over so much time. So really, you know, I
- 7:09Speaker 2: try to do everything I can to make sure my
- 7:10Speaker 2: mechanics around my spot. But then as soon as you
- 7:12Speaker 2: step on the mound and see hitters and how they're
- 7:14Speaker 2: reacting to your pitches is the first time that you
- 7:16Speaker 2: need to start making adjustments.
- 7:17Speaker 4: So last year was a constant adjustment.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Obviously, it wasn't good in their first half, and I
- 7:21Speaker 2: was trying to find what could make it click and
- 7:23Speaker 2: then finally found this thought process that there's something to
- 7:26Speaker 2: do with kind of like getting on top of the
- 7:27Speaker 2: ball a little bit more, and that seemed to clean
- 7:28Speaker 2: things up right away.

- 8:32Speaker 3: When you decide to not play anymore, what will you
- 8:34Speaker 3: miss the least? Not miss the most? What will you
- 8:37Speaker 3: miss the least?
- 8:40Speaker 4: Being away from my family?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Wait?
- 8:41Speaker 7: Wait?
- 8:42Speaker 4: Is that right? Is those a double negative?
- 8:43Speaker 1: Wait the other way?
- 8:44Speaker 4: The other way?
- 8:45Speaker 1: You'll miss that the most.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I'll miss that the most? Wait?
- 8:47Speaker 1: No, but you won't you miss Yeah, that kind of
- 8:49Speaker 1: what he said did make sense.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Yeah, we're okay.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Well it's the other way around then, I mean I think,
- 8:57Speaker 2: uh so, wait, I'm not answering what's the best.
- 9:00Speaker 1: To like, you know, the least the least what's your
- 9:02Speaker 1: least favorite thing?
- 9:02Speaker 4: That your least favorite?
- 9:04Speaker 1: You can say no, no, no, because one day when
- 9:06Speaker 1: you're in the media, just remember.
- 9:08Speaker 4: That I'm doing this, you know. I think.
- 9:14Speaker 2: All the prep that goes into it, you know, now, like, uh,
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's a lot, you know, I think, uh, it's the
- 9:21Speaker 2: routine is something you just kind of get in the
- 9:22Speaker 2: grind of. But but as you guys know, once you
- 9:24Speaker 2: get older, I mean, all that prep and all the
- 9:26Speaker 2: time of the training room and all that stuff, I
- 9:27Speaker 2: won't I won't miss that.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Okay. And then that's the right way.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Did I answer that?
- 9:31Speaker 5: Right?
- 9:31Speaker 4: I'm still as.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Exactly right because people ask me the same thing, like,
- 9:35Speaker 1: what do you do you miss playing?
- 9:36Speaker 7: No?
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't actually miss playing, but I missed the competition
- 9:40Speaker 1: of staying.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I mean that's the goal, right, Like I think you
- 9:42Speaker 2: when you when you check out and you retire and
- 9:44Speaker 2: you hang them up, I think the goal is to
- 9:46Speaker 2: like not miss playing, Like, Okay, I did everything I
- 9:48Speaker 2: wanted to do. You're from what I hear, you miss
- 9:50Speaker 2: all the camaraderie and all the Yeah, but that's you know,
- 9:52Speaker 2: all the fun stuff.
- 9:53Speaker 4: But but you.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Don't miss the travel. You don't miss the media, you
- 9:55Speaker 1: don't miss the getting ready to prep right, that stuff
- 9:57Speaker 1: is all you're like, yeah, gosh, I don't have to
- 9:59Speaker 1: get ready for a game.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Today, right, That's the goal is to feel like complete,
- 10:02Speaker 2: you know, like all right on to the next chapter.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Yes, Terrek's here obviously he's well he's not here today,
- 10:07Speaker 1: but he's back with USA. Did you have conversations with
- 10:10Speaker 1: because I thought what he went through was not fair.
- 10:12Speaker 1: He went to pitch one time, which is more than
- 10:15Speaker 1: you guys can say.
- 10:16Speaker 2: With the freeze, I mean, I mean, it's it's so
- 10:18Speaker 2: easy to sit here and like uh uh uh, you know,
- 10:22Speaker 2: throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks.
- 10:24Speaker 4: As as as as a casual.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Fan, but like, what this guy's risking to go and
- 10:28Speaker 2: do that, Like we like we know that it's a
- 10:30Speaker 2: lot of stress on the body.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Like we know it's not easy to go and do that.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Everybody that doesn't play the game, I don't think they
- 10:36Speaker 2: really understand that that, like the level of competition, your
- 10:39Speaker 2: body is just not quite ready for it. And you
- 10:40Speaker 2: get used to this build up routine, you get used to, okay,
- 10:44Speaker 2: spring training, game or you know, like a LIVP before
- 10:46Speaker 2: you step on a game mound.
- 10:47Speaker 4: There's a reason that we.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Do a LIVP before we go and step on the
- 10:50Speaker 2: game mound because there's a tick up of intensity. Naturally,
- 10:52Speaker 2: it just happens, and you know, you need to kind
- 10:55Speaker 2: of like ease that process up. So for him to
- 10:57Speaker 2: step in pretty quickly into that intense of an atmosphere.
- 11:01Speaker 4: It's a big ask.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And so I think it was very admirable for him
- 11:05Speaker 2: to go and do it. And and and you know,
- 11:07Speaker 2: I think anybody in the world can understand what's staring
- 11:10Speaker 2: him right in the face is the best picture on
- 11:11Speaker 2: the planet right now, and and and coming into free agency.
- 11:14Speaker 2: So I think it showed how much he cares that
- 11:16Speaker 2: he was willing to do it. I haven't done in
- 11:18Speaker 2: the past.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Would you have done it, though, if you were going
- 11:20Speaker 1: to be a say your last year originally before you
- 11:22Speaker 1: were a free agent, would you have done that?
- 11:25Speaker 4: I mean, I I I can't put myself. It's it's
- 11:27Speaker 4: a I don't know.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Uh, it's a different World Baseball Classic now than it
- 11:30Speaker 2: was when I first started.
- 11:33Speaker 4: I can't. I can't answer that, honestly.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Like and I told Trek, I was like, dude, it's
- 11:37Speaker 2: it's uh, you know, this is your decision. You you
- 11:40Speaker 2: have a lot more information than I ever would at
- 11:42Speaker 2: this point because you've gone and pitched in one of
- 11:43Speaker 2: those games and now you understand like what that feels
- 11:46Speaker 2: like and whether you you know, and and I you know.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I think another thing is a lot of guys did
- 11:50Speaker 2: the same thing. A lot of guys went and pitched
- 11:51Speaker 2: the game there and then went back to their kid.
- 11:53Speaker 2: He's got a spotlight on him. You know, he's that
- 11:55Speaker 2: he's good exactly because he's the best game and like
- 11:57Speaker 2: people are gonna talk about him and and you know.
- 12:00Speaker 2: So yeah, to answer your question, I thought I thought
- 12:02Speaker 2: some of the criticism was at it was it was unfair.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, last thing before we let you go, your brother.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I saw your brother in Miami. He was covering the
- 12:11Speaker 1: WBC but Japan had just lost and he was in
- 12:14Speaker 1: tears underneath, right because of his love for show. Yeah,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so this year, if you face show, hey, and show, Hey,
- 12:20Speaker 1: hits a homer off you. Will your brother be cheering
- 12:22Speaker 1: for showing, or he'd be cheering for you?
- 12:24Speaker 2: Come on, no, no, no, no, he's cheering for me one
- 12:26Speaker 2: hundred percent all the way. There might be an inkling
- 12:29Speaker 2: back there somewhere deep, but he'll shut it down with patents.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Okay, that's good. And now are you sick of the
- 12:32Speaker 1: video he shows of him going deep off you?
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yes?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Absolutely, okay, good. One of my favorite guys of all
- 12:38Speaker 1: time to compete against. We had some absolute battles words
- 12:42Speaker 1: going back and forth. Not then you can imagine that crowds,
- 12:44Speaker 1: but also I think the guy who I have the
- 12:45Speaker 1: most career at bats off of in my career, he
- 12:48Speaker 1: got me a lot more than I got him. Seriously,
- 12:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think I think I have more career
- 12:52Speaker 1: at bats of you than anybody.
- 12:54Speaker 4: I mean, we face a lot.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I think it was like seventy almost one hundred bats,
- 12:58Speaker 1: so yeah, it was a lot, a lot. I think
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think I have one hundred plate appearances. He hit
- 13:02Speaker 1: me twenty times, I walked once and then like seventy
- 13:05Speaker 1: five career bats. So but no, justin Berlin Ard, thank you,
- 13:09Speaker 1: one of my favorites and I can't wait to see
- 13:10Speaker 1: you back in the old.
- 13:11Speaker 4: D appreciate.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Here with Riley Green, Crafts is gonna hate it, but
- 13:25Speaker 1: another another Central Florida guy and Orlando guy. So we
- 13:30Speaker 1: are back here and we're just gonna talk to Central
- 13:33Speaker 1: Florida guys the whole day, Crafts because there's not a
- 13:35Speaker 1: lot of Pennsylvanians and Transylvanian. There's not a lot of
- 13:39Speaker 1: vampires around here, whatever you guys are called. So we're
- 13:41Speaker 1: gonna talk to Florida guys and we have all star
- 13:44Speaker 1: stud slugger and got by the way, I found out
- 13:46Speaker 1: something about you today. You could have played for Team
- 13:48Speaker 1: Puerto Rico and the WBC and you did not do it.
- 13:51Speaker 7: No, I did not.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Why not?
- 13:54Speaker 8: I mean I just wanted to, you know, kind of
- 13:56Speaker 8: go through spring, you know, kind of ramp up the way,
- 14:00Speaker 8: you know, slow and take my time.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So what does what does your how does Riley Green
- 14:06Speaker 1: translate to Puerto Rico team?
- 14:08Speaker 7: So my mother is Puerto Rican?
- 14:11Speaker 1: Okay, she.
- 14:13Speaker 8: Does not speak any Spanish. We don't really know much
- 14:18Speaker 8: about a Puerto Rican side of the family.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Yeah, uh so, But Joey Cora recruited.
- 14:24Speaker 7: You Joey Cora.
- 14:27Speaker 8: Was, you know, calling me, texting me, showing up to
- 14:31Speaker 8: my locker every day.
- 14:33Speaker 7: Just hey man, you're gonna play.
- 14:34Speaker 1: You're gonna play.
- 14:37Speaker 7: No, Joey, I'm.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Not If you would have played, would you have dyed
- 14:41Speaker 1: your hair and your beard yellow white, whatever colored colored?
- 14:44Speaker 7: I would have had to.
- 14:47Speaker 8: I definitely wouldn't have liked it, but I would have
- 14:49Speaker 8: had to for.
- 14:50Speaker 1: How long would it take for you to die? Because
- 14:52Speaker 1: this thing is thick?
- 14:52Speaker 9: It is?
- 14:54Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 14:55Speaker 8: I don't know, to be honest, I'd probably have to
- 14:56Speaker 8: shave it all off after I died it because I
- 15:00Speaker 8: I don't think I'm gonna look.
- 15:01Speaker 7: Good with a blonde beard, so maybe nah, I don't think.
- 15:05Speaker 1: So what when's the last time you shave fully?
- 15:09Speaker 7: Fully?
- 15:12Speaker 1: I haven't seen my chin since like twenty fifteen. I
- 15:14Speaker 1: don't need It's still there only because I can feel it,
- 15:16Speaker 1: but I've actually never seen what it looks like underneath.
- 15:18Speaker 7: It's also been like it's probably been like six years.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Maybe you're young.
- 15:23Speaker 7: I had a mustache during the season.
- 15:26Speaker 1: When was this? This is this year? Yeah, well you
- 15:30Speaker 1: had a mustache. You only mustache.
- 15:32Speaker 8: I mean I had to I had to switch something
- 15:35Speaker 8: up I had to you made the All Star Team.
- 15:39Speaker 7: Thank god for the mustache. I mean it was great.
- 15:43Speaker 7: It helped me get through whatever the heck I was
- 15:44Speaker 7: going through, so that's true. I needed it back.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Do you feel like.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Twenty twenty five was a successful season? Anybody can run
- 15:53Speaker 3: the stats. Everybody's gonna hate on certain things, everybody's gonna
- 15:56Speaker 3: love on the All Star Game. Does Riley Green think
- 15:59Speaker 3: that Riley I had a successful twenty twenty five personally,
- 16:03Speaker 3: not team wise?
- 16:04Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I think it was. I think it was great.
- 16:09Speaker 8: There's obviously some things need to work on, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 8: strikeout wise and things like that, but overall, I thought
- 16:16Speaker 8: it was really really good.
- 16:18Speaker 7: But there's definitely a lot more left in the tank.
- 16:20Speaker 1: How do we cut down on the strikeouts? Because that's
- 16:22Speaker 1: the one thing I think all the people that I
- 16:24Speaker 1: get to cover, the one thing they say, man, Riley
- 16:27Speaker 1: Green incredible hitter power, RBIs can play defense, but dick strikeouts.
- 16:33Speaker 1: How do you cut down on strikers? Because we'll talk
- 16:34Speaker 1: to AJ Hinch and he'll tell us, well, guys aren't
- 16:37Speaker 1: going up there to swing and miss. You're not going
- 16:39Speaker 1: up there saying I'm just gonna strike out this minut
- 16:41Speaker 1: and I'm done. The only guy I've ever heard say
- 16:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna go up there and strike out. He didn't
- 16:44Speaker 1: mean it, but his line was, if I there's a
- 16:47Speaker 1: run around first done, why I'd just strike out? Well,
- 16:49Speaker 1: I thought I might hit into a double play, so
- 16:50Speaker 1: I figured i'd strike out only make one at bet right.
- 16:53Speaker 1: So but you're not going up there saying, man, I'm
- 16:54Speaker 1: gonna go up there and swing and miss three times.
- 16:56Speaker 1: So how do you cut that down without losing everything
- 16:59Speaker 1: else that you have with it?
- 17:00Speaker 8: I think I got into kind of a phase where
- 17:05Speaker 8: I thought I could hit everything over the fence. It
- 17:07Speaker 8: was just like, you know, a body felt good, swing
- 17:10Speaker 8: felt good.
- 17:11Speaker 7: I was swinging at everything, and obviously the strikeouts showed.
- 17:17Speaker 8: And even in like situations, you know, a runnerund second
- 17:21Speaker 8: less than two outs, I'm still trying to take a
- 17:23Speaker 8: big swing. So me knowing the situation, knowing the game, hey,
- 17:28Speaker 8: we don't need to take a ginormous swing here. You know,
- 17:30Speaker 8: there's times where I'm going to take my shot, and
- 17:32Speaker 8: there's times where you know, other guys take their shots too,
- 17:34Speaker 8: But it's also times where, hey, you know, a double
- 17:38Speaker 8: is just as good as a homer and things like that.
- 17:40Speaker 8: So just really trying to read the game. Don't let
- 17:44Speaker 8: the game speed up, and you know, just in certain
- 17:49Speaker 8: moments take my shot, but in other moments, back down
- 17:52Speaker 8: and hey, let's hit a double instead of a homer.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Is that a preparation thing or is that like you've
- 17:57Speaker 3: talked about speeding up and fans think, oh, well, what
- 17:59Speaker 3: the pitch clock? It's hard to make those decisions. Is
- 18:02Speaker 3: that a predetermined thing when you're walking up to the plate.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Can it be a decision that you make in the moment,
- 18:08Speaker 3: because nobody walks up to the plate and goes if
- 18:10Speaker 3: I get to two strikes, No, you're thinking, I'm gonna
- 18:13Speaker 3: see this ball middle middle, I'm hitting a dinger.
- 18:15Speaker 5: But is it is? How do you slow the game down?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:18Speaker 7: I mean I think it. I think it starts on deck.
- 18:21Speaker 8: I mean whatever happens with the guy in front of
- 18:25Speaker 8: you kind of dictates what you're gonna do, right, So
- 18:29Speaker 8: I mean, if you know, if someone it's a double
- 18:31Speaker 8: or a triple with less than two outs, hey i'm
- 18:34Speaker 8: gonna you know, I'm gonna choke and poke and you know,
- 18:37Speaker 8: score that run. But you know, if there's a situation
- 18:40Speaker 8: where you want to take a shot. You know you
- 18:41Speaker 8: feel good and you know you like the matchup. Hey,
- 18:44Speaker 8: maybe take a shot.
- 18:45Speaker 1: When's the last time you did that? Though legitimate, because
- 18:48Speaker 1: you were a stud in high school, you cruise through
- 18:50Speaker 1: the minor leagues, you've been great in the big league club.
- 18:53Speaker 1: When's the last time you went up to the plate
- 18:55Speaker 1: and said, man, I'm just really going to try and
- 18:57Speaker 1: roll over and hit a ground ball a second to
- 18:58Speaker 1: move together a third.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Uh.
- 19:01Speaker 8: Actually, I mean I'm not trying to roll over, but
- 19:04Speaker 8: you know my sights are, Hey, I need to I
- 19:07Speaker 8: need to get this guy over. Let's you know, let's
- 19:09Speaker 8: get something close to me and I hit a pull
- 19:10Speaker 8: side either you know, ball in the gap, and if
- 19:14Speaker 8: if I happen to roll over, it's still a win.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Okay. So when yeah, during the season, last year, times playoffs,
- 19:20Speaker 1: times you when you go so when Riley Green walks
- 19:23Speaker 1: up to the plate with a run around second lesson
- 19:25Speaker 1: Noel's right, say, whoever sit in front of you hits
- 19:27Speaker 1: a double, lead off double and you're up, and you
- 19:29Speaker 1: walk up to the plate and you say, all right,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I'm really going to focus on getting this guy over.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Because a lot of times when you talk to coaches,
- 19:34Speaker 1: they say, we don't want Riley Green to be forced
- 19:38Speaker 1: to pull the ball right because you have power to
- 19:39Speaker 1: left center too. So to me, I love hearing that
- 19:43Speaker 1: because to me, that's like a lost art. Someone can
- 19:46Speaker 1: go up there and hit do that, but I just
- 19:48Speaker 1: don't hear that from a lot of coaches. So I
- 19:50Speaker 1: love that you said that.
- 19:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I'm not like, I'm not like trying
- 19:54Speaker 8: to go up and roll over the first base and
- 19:56Speaker 8: like I'm just all I'm doing is changing my sights
- 19:59Speaker 8: from let's say left center to right center.
- 20:02Speaker 7: And you know, if I get a heater, I'm going
- 20:04Speaker 7: to hit the right center.
- 20:05Speaker 8: If I get you know, some off speed, I'm probably
- 20:08Speaker 8: going to hit a ground ball, but it's going to
- 20:10Speaker 8: move the runner and it's going to do a job.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And then for you, your key is the site to
- 20:14Speaker 1: left center right, Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Center to left center.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Just can you explain what that means because a lot
- 20:19Speaker 1: of people don't understand when when people say, oh, I
- 20:22Speaker 1: move my site, meaning, can you explain what that means
- 20:24Speaker 1: to someone sitting at home.
- 20:26Speaker 8: Yeah, So it's where it's where I want to hit
- 20:29Speaker 8: the ball. And it's just like the direction I want
- 20:31Speaker 8: my body to kind of feel like it's going, so,
- 20:36Speaker 8: you know, trying to hit the heater to center field,
- 20:39Speaker 8: left center sometimes if I'm not, if I'm late, I'll
- 20:42Speaker 8: just move with the right center. It's just so I
- 20:44Speaker 8: can try to be on time. And it's just kind
- 20:45Speaker 8: of like a mental thing, like a mental queue too.
- 20:49Speaker 8: You know, make sure your body's in the right position
- 20:50Speaker 8: and you know, make sure you're on certain pitches and
- 20:54Speaker 8: you're hitting the ball where you want to.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Defensively, where do you feel you're at defensively playing in
- 20:59Speaker 3: the outfield coming into this season?
- 21:03Speaker 7: I feel great.
- 21:04Speaker 8: I feel really good, you know, still in left field.
- 21:11Speaker 7: I mean, you know, just ready to go and yeah,
- 21:14Speaker 7: feel good.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Is there anything that you're working on for that to
- 21:18Speaker 3: improve that part of your game? Because when you talk
- 21:20Speaker 3: about perennial All Stars, to me, when you take that
- 21:24Speaker 3: next step, it's the constant. It's like your best seasons
- 21:28Speaker 3: on both sides of the ball every single year. So
- 21:30Speaker 3: is there something that you did, like a concerted effort
- 21:33Speaker 3: to continue to improve that from this offseason?
- 21:38Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 21:39Speaker 8: Working on my prep step because when I I get
- 21:42Speaker 8: into trouble sometimes I'll you know, I'll walk into it.
- 21:45Speaker 8: I'll do a little hot, but then for some reason
- 21:49Speaker 8: in my brain, I'll hop to the right or to
- 21:51Speaker 8: the left, and.
- 21:54Speaker 7: It kind of sounds weird.
- 21:56Speaker 8: But when I hop to either side, you know, I'm
- 22:00Speaker 8: kinda I'm losing. I'm losing one of the sides if
- 22:04Speaker 8: the balls hit there. So I'm trying to, you know,
- 22:06Speaker 8: make sure I'm centered. I'm not hopping super high. I'm
- 22:09Speaker 8: on time when i'm when the ball's passing through the zone.
- 22:12Speaker 8: So that's kind of the big thing I've been focusing on.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Do you do you know what's coming? Do you have
- 22:17Speaker 1: a pitchclm in your hat not in left field, on
- 22:19Speaker 1: left field so you don't know, or do you watch
- 22:21Speaker 1: where the catcher sets up? Do you try to guess
- 22:23Speaker 1: what pitch is coming.
- 22:25Speaker 7: I just try to read the swing.
- 22:27Speaker 8: There's a it's just kind of like an instinct thing,
- 22:30Speaker 8: like you see you see the pitch, if you see
- 22:33Speaker 8: a hump, if you see just a small hump. You know,
- 22:36Speaker 8: just kind of things like that. I don't really know
- 22:38Speaker 8: how to explain it, just kind of like an instinct thing.
- 22:40Speaker 1: No, I get it. It just sometimes I know some guys
- 22:42Speaker 1: were want to pitch com they know what's coming. I
- 22:44Speaker 1: remember Tory Hunter when I was catching, he would try
- 22:47Speaker 1: to see my signs from centerfield, which seemed like impossible,
- 22:49Speaker 1: but he would tell me that he could see my
- 22:51Speaker 1: signs from centerfield, so he would try to cheat one
- 22:54Speaker 1: way or the other. So I get it. It's hard
- 22:56Speaker 1: to teach that though. The instinctual side of it, right, Yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: you justind of is that from working on it or
- 23:02Speaker 1: is it just something you were born with.
- 23:03Speaker 8: I mean, I think it's I think it has to
- 23:05Speaker 8: do with first of all, knowing the hitter.
- 23:08Speaker 7: I mean, I'm kind.
- 23:10Speaker 8: Of gonna want to know what every hitters, you know,
- 23:13Speaker 8: what their strength is, what they want to do, and
- 23:16Speaker 8: that just comes from watching the game. And I just
- 23:18Speaker 8: think also, MVP, I take it's like live reads every
- 23:22Speaker 8: single day and I'm you know, trying to read it.
- 23:24Speaker 8: I'm trying to take off even before the balls hit,
- 23:27Speaker 8: just to you know, try to challenge myself.
- 23:29Speaker 1: And then Max Clark was here, obviously a big prospect.
- 23:33Speaker 1: What did you think about the heat he took for
- 23:36Speaker 1: you know, the change and he dropped the fly ball
- 23:38Speaker 1: and listen, I've been in a lot of spring strings
- 23:40Speaker 1: guys dropped fly balls, big league established veteran guys Arizona.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I've seen guys go ah and they can't see it right,
- 23:46Speaker 1: I've seen guys do it here. What did you think
- 23:48Speaker 1: and what did you talk to him about all the
- 23:50Speaker 1: stuff that he took after all that.
- 23:53Speaker 7: I'm not sure if we had any conversations about it.
- 23:57Speaker 8: You know, that's that's who he is, That's that's his personality,
- 24:01Speaker 8: and you know that's who he wants to be, and
- 24:04Speaker 8: you know that's okay. It's I feel like I feel
- 24:07Speaker 8: like it kind of gets blown out of proportion sometimes,
- 24:09Speaker 8: but you know, that's who he is, and he's a
- 24:11Speaker 8: dang good player. You know, he's he's gonna have a
- 24:15Speaker 8: really really good career.
- 24:16Speaker 7: And yeah, the Pop five it.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Was in the sun like it happened. Happens since you
- 24:20Speaker 1: know we're all so please don't say it's because he
- 24:22Speaker 1: had change on no. Yeah, yeah, well I appreciate you
- 24:27Speaker 1: the veteran guys standing up for him, so that I mean,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I agree with you, like you have to let guys
- 24:31Speaker 1: be who they are. So if he likes to once,
- 24:33Speaker 1: that's what he is. He's always been like, he's not
- 24:34Speaker 1: going to change now.
- 24:35Speaker 8: It's his confidence that's how he shows his confidence, and yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 8: that's what makes him a better player.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Agree, before we let you go spring training here in
- 24:42Speaker 1: Florida where you're from. Obviously, who's caught more fish? You work?
- 24:44Speaker 1: Tor this spring training?
- 24:46Speaker 4: Oh?
- 24:48Speaker 1: I hate to say a torque.
- 24:49Speaker 7: Oh Tor?
- 24:50Speaker 1: Did we? Uh?
- 24:51Speaker 8: We went on a on a charter in Tampa with
- 24:54Speaker 8: our board Trajan and.
- 24:57Speaker 7: Caught more fish than me. It was sad by the time.
- 25:01Speaker 1: It's embarrassing. You might lose your floor to card I
- 25:03Speaker 1: know after that. And then also the last time we
- 25:05Speaker 1: had you on, I believe you said you wanted to
- 25:07Speaker 1: meet Riley Green, the singer. As that happened.
- 25:10Speaker 7: That has happened. Yes, happened in Baltimore.
- 25:14Speaker 8: Okay, he just happened to be there playing a show
- 25:18Speaker 8: or something and bring you on stage. No, he was, Uh,
- 25:21Speaker 8: he was hitting VP with the Orioles and I had
- 25:23Speaker 8: to go over there.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Did you walk out and say Hi, I'm Riley Green.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think so what he said.
- 25:29Speaker 8: I mean, I'm sure he said I'm Riley too, so
- 25:32Speaker 8: it's not a little different. But yeah, I mean it
- 25:35Speaker 8: was awesome, awesome.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Okay, good, I'm glad that happened because I was supposed
- 25:38Speaker 1: to make that happen, and we just haven't had you on.
- 25:40Speaker 1: So I can't make something happen if we don't have
- 25:42Speaker 1: you on. So now that you're back, thank you, Riley.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I hope you have a great year. From one Floridian
- 25:47Speaker 1: Crabs to another. Let's have a great year.
- 26:02Speaker 7: You know.
- 26:02Speaker 1: It's always special craftsy and we get to welcome catchers
- 26:05Speaker 1: on the foul territory. We are joined now by gold Glove.
- 26:09Speaker 1: By the way Catcher crafts. You and I don't have
- 26:10Speaker 1: one of those Dylan nigglers here, gold Glove, is it?
- 26:14Speaker 1: Have you got used to? Do you sign every autograph
- 26:16Speaker 1: with g now?
- 26:17Speaker 9: No, No, A couple of the jerseys, A couple of
- 26:20Speaker 9: the jerseys, but.
- 26:20Speaker 1: That's about you charge exter for that. No, Like eight
- 26:23Speaker 1: year old kid comes up and he goes ding Dylan, Dylan,
- 26:26Speaker 1: please sign you're.
- 26:26Speaker 10: Like five for the gg No, I've seen a couple
- 26:31Speaker 10: of the baseball is that some of the people have
- 26:33Speaker 10: han't around, So signed a couple of those.
- 26:35Speaker 9: But for the most part.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Now, okay, now you you haven't gotten your you haven't
- 26:39Speaker 3: gotten your award yet?
- 26:40Speaker 5: Correct?
- 26:41Speaker 4: No, I have not.
- 26:42Speaker 1: I have not.
- 26:42Speaker 10: Obviously we had the ceremony in New York. But I
- 26:44Speaker 10: have not received the award yet.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Before you saw the award, did you know that it
- 26:50Speaker 3: was an actual glove that was painted gold or did
- 26:53Speaker 3: you think it was like a like solid like metal glove.
- 27:00Speaker 10: So I did hear from somebody else that I knew
- 27:03Speaker 10: going in going into it that it wasn't solid goal
- 27:06Speaker 10: because I've seen I've seen trophies in past, you know,
- 27:08Speaker 10: have that or like, you know, the fake plastic. But
- 27:11Speaker 10: I did not realize it was the spray painting goals
- 27:13Speaker 10: that was that was new.
- 27:14Speaker 1: It's been a long time though, since the Tiger had
- 27:16Speaker 1: won one. Yeah, Ian Kinsler twenty sixteen. Yeah, and for
- 27:19Speaker 1: a catcher, it's been almost twenty years, two thousand and seven.
- 27:22Speaker 1: So what does that mean to you?
- 27:24Speaker 9: It's cool being in that group. It was really cool.
- 27:27Speaker 9: It was just some special player. So being part of
- 27:28Speaker 9: that's really cool.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Who'd you think? Everybody? Mom?
- 27:33Speaker 10: Dad, Yeah, uncles, cousins, mom, dad always great great staff here,
- 27:39Speaker 10: great catching staff here.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Hinch and say, hinch, I'm better than you know. Oh
- 27:44Speaker 1: come on, come on?
- 27:47Speaker 3: Did you know you had it in you like some
- 27:49Speaker 3: people are, Like I worked out all off season. I
- 27:51Speaker 3: knew my this was getting better. My that was getting better.
- 27:54Speaker 3: But we usually talk about hitting. Did you know you
- 27:56Speaker 3: had a gold Glove in you preseason?
- 28:01Speaker 10: I think I think it all came from the opportunity
- 28:03Speaker 10: that I was given, to be honest, you know, I
- 28:06Speaker 10: always I always prided myself and my defensive ability. But
- 28:09Speaker 10: the biggest thing is the biggest thing is getting the
- 28:12Speaker 10: getting the opportunity. And obviously Jake went down last year
- 28:14Speaker 10: and I started catching majority of the innings, and uh,
- 28:17Speaker 10: you know, things started to stack up, started to do
- 28:19Speaker 10: a little bit, do some things the right way.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So it was good.
- 28:24Speaker 10: I'm not gonna say I knew I had it in me,
- 28:25Speaker 10: but I always knew that. I I pride myself for
- 28:28Speaker 10: my defensive work.
- 28:29Speaker 1: It's pretty awesome. And you can throw too. I mean,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you let all catchers with thirty one you know, minimum
- 28:36Speaker 1: attempts for whatever you led the league, right, So pat
- 28:39Speaker 1: yourself on the back. How's the elbow?
- 28:40Speaker 10: It's doing better, doing better pretty much out of rehab now,
- 28:44Speaker 10: and uh all all you're worrying about is kind of
- 28:46Speaker 10: getting the game reps because seasons kind of sneaking up
- 28:50Speaker 10: on you.
- 28:50Speaker 9: You know, we only have what they.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Do just of scope.
- 28:53Speaker 9: Yeah, out of scope.
- 28:54Speaker 10: They took They took a couple of loose bodies out,
- 28:57Speaker 10: a couple of loose bodies out. No, No, the thing
- 29:00Speaker 10: did a little marbles. It looked like a little marbles.
- 29:03Speaker 10: So they were how big would you say they weren't?
- 29:06Speaker 10: They weren't all that big. I think it just kind
- 29:08Speaker 10: of got into a little bit of the wrong area
- 29:09Speaker 10: because I think I had it for like, did.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Your elbow lock up? You like woke up one day
- 29:13Speaker 1: and you're like, uh, there's something wrong here.
- 29:15Speaker 9: It was almost like a strain of the top form.
- 29:18Speaker 1: It was on the top.
- 29:19Speaker 9: Yeah, I think I think, I think it. I forget what.
- 29:22Speaker 10: Side of the elbow it kind of locked in on,
- 29:23Speaker 10: but I felt it. I felt it one day.
- 29:25Speaker 1: The little dots are Yeah, do you like connect the
- 29:28Speaker 1: dots with your.
- 29:29Speaker 9: Child trying to trying to get the scars out of here?
- 29:34Speaker 3: Did it hurt last year when you're playing because some
- 29:37Speaker 3: people don't understand how much guys go through when they're
- 29:41Speaker 3: or playing through during the length of an entire season.
- 29:46Speaker 9: No, it was it was ultimately fine.
- 29:47Speaker 10: My elbow felt great last year, So it was kind
- 29:49Speaker 10: of just one of those things we're ramping up in
- 29:50Speaker 10: the off season. I felt it a little bit and
- 29:53Speaker 10: then it finally kind of got into the wrong spot
- 29:55Speaker 10: and then we had to kind of take care of it.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Or was it a month monthish?
- 30:01Speaker 10: Yeah, So I got the surgery on the twenty eighth
- 30:03Speaker 10: of January.
- 30:05Speaker 9: So I'm about I don't know what the math is there,
- 30:08Speaker 9: but seven close to seven weeks.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Out, Yeah, and you're ready to get your full go.
- 30:11Speaker 9: Yeah. Obviously we're still building.
- 30:13Speaker 10: We're still building the legs, still building the the reps
- 30:16Speaker 10: in game, Like, I went six in the past couple
- 30:18Speaker 10: of days.
- 30:18Speaker 9: But that's kind of normal progression for a catcher.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I asked if you had caught nine yet.
- 30:22Speaker 10: No, I don't think I did last year either. Hitch
- 30:25Speaker 10: takes it too easy. He's taking care of us, I guess.
- 30:28Speaker 10: But but you know, obviously these next few games are
- 30:31Speaker 10: gonna have to turn it up a little bit.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Okay, nice. What's it like having this staff, by.
- 30:34Speaker 9: The way, it's awesome. It's awesome.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Has Verlander done any like rookie ranks to everybody on
- 30:39Speaker 1: this team yet?
- 30:40Speaker 10: No, no, no, I haven't seen any of that yet.
- 30:42Speaker 10: But ultimately, you know, with the exhibitions we got in
- 30:45Speaker 10: the off season, We had a really good staff last year,
- 30:48Speaker 10: and we got better. It's gonna be really fun to
- 30:50Speaker 10: work with for really fun to work with Framber ken
- 30:54Speaker 10: Lee in the bullpen too.
- 30:55Speaker 9: We got a really good staff. It's gonna be a
- 30:57Speaker 9: lot of fun catching those guys this year.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Are you gonna go to Kenley and say, look, Kenley,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I know it's not your thing, but I loved the
- 31:01Speaker 1: league and throwing guys out helped me out a little bit. Here,
- 31:04Speaker 1: ken your next catcher, you gotta you gotta help me out.
- 31:06Speaker 9: No, he was actually pretty funny.
- 31:07Speaker 10: He picked somebody off is not loudly because he pitched yesterday,
- 31:10Speaker 10: but last time he pitched on Homie picked somebody off
- 31:12Speaker 10: at first, pointed straight at pointed straight at skip.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Yeah did he Yeah, that's awesome.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Look at that old dolls candle and learn new tricks.
- 31:22Speaker 3: When you when you saw that whole the whole like Scooba?
- 31:26Speaker 3: When is when is arbitration case? Framberg gets announced, Verlander
- 31:31Speaker 3: gets announced, all happening within the same amount of time.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Who was your first call to or what was your
- 31:37Speaker 3: reaction when you saw all of those moves?
- 31:42Speaker 10: I remember, so, for instance, when we signed ver he
- 31:46Speaker 10: was I was in the training room. I pull out
- 31:48Speaker 10: my phone and all of a sudden, it says ten
- 31:49Speaker 10: minutes ago on Tiger's Instagram we signed him.
- 31:51Speaker 9: I was like, oh my god, you know.
- 31:53Speaker 1: You followed the Tigers on Instagram? Yeah, okay, yeah, well
- 31:56Speaker 1: well know if you don't, then something happened exactly exactly
- 31:59Speaker 1: the way. That's the new breaking news exactly.
- 32:01Speaker 9: But I found that out. That was awesome. That was
- 32:04Speaker 9: awesome news.
- 32:04Speaker 10: And then I met him, what thirty minutes later when
- 32:06Speaker 10: he walked into the walked into the locker room, the
- 32:09Speaker 10: frambur The Framber news was great, and obviously Scoob was
- 32:12Speaker 10: going through his process.
- 32:13Speaker 9: But you know, getting all those guys here is really special.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Which when are you looking most forward to catching? To
- 32:19Speaker 1: catching for?
- 32:20Speaker 9: I can't pick favorites. I can't pick we.
- 32:22Speaker 1: All have favorite but that is such bs.
- 32:25Speaker 10: You know, I'm new guy, just the new guys, new guy.
- 32:28Speaker 10: I got to catch Framber a couple of times. I've
- 32:31Speaker 10: caught JV one time. I'm looking forward to the end
- 32:33Speaker 10: season JV scouting report. See it's kind of going through
- 32:37Speaker 10: that prep work with him, and then obviously Framber's Framber's
- 32:42Speaker 10: gonna go out there and do what he does, spend
- 32:45Speaker 10: the you know, spin the ball.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Pretty pretty well, Mayers catcher, he like scooms with with Rogers.
- 32:50Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, you just you said, Jake,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I got this this year. I don't know, you see,
- 32:56Speaker 1: he's kind of yah, he's kind of been around the
- 32:57Speaker 1: block a little. But uh, did Scoob will get you
- 33:00Speaker 1: anything for a SI?
- 33:01Speaker 9: Yeah, you got me a watch?
- 33:02Speaker 1: Same one? Did you get a different watch? Then he
- 33:05Speaker 1: got for Jake?
- 33:06Speaker 9: No different, different watch? You got Jake another one too.
- 33:08Speaker 1: So Jake has to watch jaks to watches man some bskrats.
- 33:13Speaker 5: That's well, I mean that was that was What do
- 33:15Speaker 5: you want him to do?
- 33:16Speaker 3: Give give Dylan another watch for not being there the
- 33:19Speaker 3: year before when only j watched.
- 33:21Speaker 1: For give me watch for broadcast up.
- 33:25Speaker 3: AJ want so many free things. Don't be like AJ.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Just because your season last year should have been an
- 33:32Speaker 3: All Star season, did you feel like did you feel
- 33:35Speaker 3: like when the All Star voting came out, you were like,
- 33:39Speaker 3: I'm good, I'm good with having missing the day, but
- 33:41Speaker 3: it would have been nice to been there.
- 33:44Speaker 10: Yeah, obviously that's something you always strive for. You always
- 33:46Speaker 10: try to make that team, and uh, you know, it
- 33:49Speaker 10: tells you how good of a first AF you have.
- 33:51Speaker 10: But you know, just to be considered in that group
- 33:53Speaker 10: was special for me, especially where we started at in
- 33:56Speaker 10: the beginning of the season. But it's always something to
- 33:58Speaker 10: work towards, you know, we're working towards it this year
- 34:01Speaker 10: now looking forward to.
- 34:02Speaker 1: That zero pass by the way a whole year. You know,
- 34:06Speaker 1: cal cal Rawley also did that, but then against you
- 34:09Speaker 1: guys in the playoffs he had one. So you're ahead
- 34:12Speaker 1: of him in the race for the longest non pass
- 34:15Speaker 1: ball street, so get him out of the way. And
- 34:16Speaker 1: spring training.
- 34:17Speaker 10: Exactly exactly, obviously something there might have been a couple
- 34:20Speaker 10: of generous wild pitches there for a little bit.
- 34:22Speaker 9: And during the season.
- 34:23Speaker 1: You ever heard of the score because we used to
- 34:24Speaker 1: call the scorer dangel one so it's a non RN run.
- 34:29Speaker 10: Yeah, I think you have to go through your agent
- 34:31Speaker 10: with that. Now, I'm not I'm not entirely sure, but.
- 34:32Speaker 1: You've never called the change hit to an error to
- 34:35Speaker 1: a hit.
- 34:36Speaker 10: Now because they tend to be generous. To be honest,
- 34:39Speaker 10: I've always seen him be more so generous than that.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Okay, it's a different process now, agent. You can't strong
- 34:45Speaker 3: arm the scorekeeper.
- 34:49Speaker 1: From the dugout. I remember guys would call from the
- 34:51Speaker 1: dugout Crotzy during the game and say change that or
- 34:55Speaker 1: I'm coming up there.
- 34:56Speaker 9: I could see that, especially the air hit.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it is bad. That's not that's not good. But
- 35:01Speaker 3: I got to go to the ABS system. You've obviously had.
- 35:05Speaker 3: You've seen it in spring training. Have you used it
- 35:07Speaker 3: and do you think you're going to be really good
- 35:10Speaker 3: during the season with it?
- 35:12Speaker 10: Obviously it's a big it's a big difference in last year.
- 35:15Speaker 10: We're gonna try to keep it as normal as possible.
- 35:18Speaker 10: We're gonna still catch everything, like you know, there is
- 35:21Speaker 10: no abas like we did last year, like we did
- 35:23Speaker 10: the past few years. But I think it's just gonna
- 35:26Speaker 10: it's gonna bring those those misses down.
- 35:31Speaker 9: You know, I've used it a few times.
- 35:33Speaker 10: I've used it a few times in spring I've only
- 35:35Speaker 10: I think I caught three games so far.
- 35:37Speaker 9: I think I've.
- 35:38Speaker 10: Challenged three times, right times, right all three times. Although
- 35:42Speaker 10: I used I don't know if you saw the other
- 35:44Speaker 10: day on Scoobs uh Scoobs outing, he did it himself.
- 35:47Speaker 9: Yeah, he pulled a.
- 35:48Speaker 10: For seam, pulled a forceeing down and in I wasn't
- 35:50Speaker 10: ready for it, and he went to go challenge it,
- 35:53Speaker 10: and I have no way, no way. I thought it
- 35:55Speaker 10: was a strike. And of course he challenges and gets
- 35:57Speaker 10: it right and goes mm hmm.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Sou for you this year?
- 36:00Speaker 5: No?
- 36:01Speaker 1: Probably not No.
- 36:02Speaker 5: No.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Part of your value as a player is determined by
- 36:06Speaker 3: the stupid stat of war. But when it's good, that's awesome.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Like we're getting extra paid one of the things catchers get,
- 36:14Speaker 3: and you killed it last year. Part of the reason
- 36:16Speaker 3: you got your gold Glove was receiving Do you feel
- 36:20Speaker 3: like with the a BS there could be a little
- 36:22Speaker 3: bit of value taken away as far as in your
- 36:25Speaker 3: pocket as a player with the ABS.
- 36:31Speaker 9: Yes, and no.
- 36:32Speaker 10: I think I think the far ends of the spectrum
- 36:34Speaker 10: are gonna gonna shrink down a little bit because obviously,
- 36:37Speaker 10: the way we're graded on framing is the balls that
- 36:40Speaker 10: are way out of the zone that are called strikes.
- 36:42Speaker 10: And then if you if you dunk a ball that's
- 36:45Speaker 10: in the zone, but you know, it gives us the
- 36:47Speaker 10: opportunity to challenge those balls that are in zone that
- 36:50Speaker 10: we that we mess up sometimes, and it allows the
- 36:52Speaker 10: hitters to challenge the balls that are egregious balls that
- 36:54Speaker 10: are called strikes.
- 36:55Speaker 9: So it's gonna be interesting.
- 36:57Speaker 10: Obviously, I don't know how they're I don't know how
- 36:59Speaker 10: the score he's gonna go this year with uh you know,
- 37:02Speaker 10: the metric of framing and what goes into that. So
- 37:05Speaker 10: we're kind of gonna have to learn on the fly
- 37:07Speaker 10: and see how that goes.
- 37:08Speaker 1: You're gonna have to learn how to early in the game.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I've talked on pays with us, take balls or strikes
- 37:12Speaker 1: and box them. Hitters challenge him, and then they get
- 37:16Speaker 1: they lose the challenges early. Now, I wonder if anybody
- 37:19Speaker 1: would do it, You'd be the f You're the gold glover.
- 37:21Speaker 1: You tell me I'm box him because I was missing him.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You boxing the picture, the pitcher gets pissed off, you know.
- 37:26Speaker 1: If the empire still calls him a strike and then
- 37:30Speaker 1: they're out of challenges, then then the zone goes exactly
- 37:34Speaker 1: all right. Before I let you go, I have to
- 37:35Speaker 1: ask you this one question for those who don't know.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Dylan went to Ohio State. They used to be good
- 37:40Speaker 1: at football, okay, but now Indiana is the power of
- 37:43Speaker 1: the Big Ten. How does it feel for Ohio State
- 37:45Speaker 1: not to be any good in football anymore.
- 37:47Speaker 10: I wouldn't go that far. I wouldn't go that far. Obviously,
- 37:49Speaker 10: Indiana got the best of us this year. It was
- 37:51Speaker 10: a really good team. Some are saying it's the best
- 37:53Speaker 10: football team ever. Obviously, you know.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Obviously there's the schollege football team ever.
- 37:58Speaker 10: That's also a point. That's also point. But yeah, the
- 38:01Speaker 10: Buck guys, now, the Buck guys were good this year.
- 38:03Speaker 10: Obviously didn't make it as far as we wanted to.
- 38:05Speaker 10: But it's always a pleasure.
- 38:08Speaker 1: How much if you donated to the football nil zero?
- 38:11Speaker 1: What the second years good for you?
- 38:17Speaker 7: Wait?
- 38:17Speaker 1: He gets that one hundred millie paycheck, then they're gonna there.
- 38:20Speaker 1: His phone's gonna constantly be ringing. You might you'll even
- 38:23Speaker 1: get hey, Dylan, we'll have you got the I if
- 38:24Speaker 1: you give us money.
- 38:25Speaker 5: Dylan, don't don't take any pressure from him.
- 38:28Speaker 3: AJ asked for all the free stuff, acts like he
- 38:31Speaker 3: donates to a college he never went to. And then
- 38:34Speaker 3: he he shames other people who don't do what he
- 38:37Speaker 3: doesn't do.
- 38:38Speaker 1: That's true, which part I like free stuff? So yeah,
- 38:43Speaker 1: I do give money to a school I didn't go to,
- 38:45Speaker 1: although my kid, my daughter goes there. Also gave a
- 38:48Speaker 1: lot of money to my kids high school, so that's
- 38:49Speaker 1: also true. What was the third party said, try to
- 38:52Speaker 1: shame people know it's just more of a way to
- 38:54Speaker 1: get under crats of skin because of his college. I
- 38:56Speaker 1: like that. Well, Dylan, thank you help please stay healthy.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I love watching you catch, I love watching you throw,
- 39:03Speaker 1: watching you to swing the back. You have a great year.
