- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Well, hello everyone and welcome to the Divas That Care Network.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: My name is Candice Gish and I am the founder of this program and the host of this particular segment.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: I'm just so excited.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: You know, for any of you that have just tuned in for the first time, we've been doing this program now for, well, we'll be going into our 10th year.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We're very excited.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: 2020 will be our 10th year.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: We have amazing women from around the world that are now hosting programs.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And in 2020, we'll actually have 20 hosts to kick off the year.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And we're just so excited because these women interview a variety of other women, young divas who are making a difference in the world.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: We're providing a platform to share their stories.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So I know that if you've been listening to our program for the last nine years, you'll know that these women are inspirational, they're empowering, and every day I'm just so grateful that I have this opportunity because myself, I just am so inspired by each and every one of them.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Today's amazing young diva.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: has graced us with her presence in the past.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: She is so inspirational.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: She has done some amazing things and she continues to keep on raising the bar and doing a lot of things out there.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And you're going to love her story.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You're going to love what she's now doing and how she's continuing to make the world a better place.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: My guest today is Jocelyn Marancic.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And I am just, thank you, Jocelyn, for coming on.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Because as I said, I'm just so inspired of all the things that you have been doing.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to be here.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Well, Jocelyn, for any of our new listeners that have not heard your other programs, could you share a little bit about yourself?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Of
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: course.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So I will
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: go ahead and get started.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: So I started getting interested in the computer science field back when I was in middle school, and I discovered an online programming community called Scratch.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And I joined the Create-A-Game, but then I received a lot of positive feedback, and it encouraged me to keep going in this field.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: So then I attended a ton of computer science-related programming camps and classes and a specialty center-specific high school for computer programming.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Then in my freshman year, I noticed that there was a lack of technology equipment opportunities for the inner city schools due to financial, gender, and societal divides.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And this inspired me to start my first community initiative, GotTech Richmond for Richmond, Virginia.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: This is where I'm from.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And what this does is it donates technology to underserved schools.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: And so far in Richmond, we've donated$42,000 worth of technology equipment to over 80 schools and 120 classrooms, which directly impacted 2,000 students.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: And now...
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I decided to go to college at UNC Greensboro in North Carolina, and I expanded the initiative there, which is already starting to donate.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: I have another initiative, Top of the Rock Awards, which what it does is it gives special awards to everyday people who make the university community a special place to be.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Girl, you're doing so much.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: You know, I know in our first program, we had talked about Got Tech.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And when you were explaining it to me, I thought, well, this is absolutely amazing to have yourself and you have volunteers that help you and to get all this equipment to the schools.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And you were saying how many schools, 20 schools or 100?
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: In Richmond, 80 schools.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And in Greensboro, so far, almost 20 schools.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, my goodness.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: That's 100 schools that are being directly impacted by your program.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And it feels great.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: I really enjoy seeing all the students learning to gain a passion for computer science and programming and all the technology skills that they're going to need in this generation that are starting to become major necessary skills for a career path.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And I was going to ask you that.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: How important do you think that is?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: We're hearing a lot of different stories.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Is this what you're thinking the future is going to be holding for a lot of young individuals out there?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Yes, definitely.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: There are going to be a lot of different jobs that involve computer science.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: In fact, in a class I took this year at school about ethics in the computer science age, our professor told us that in just a few more years, there could be 65% of jobs that children have are jobs that didn't exist 10 years ago.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: So it's going to be extremely important for computer science.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Well, that's amazing.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And you're really passionate, too, about, you know, you were saying like girls and you have a girls news about technology.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Can you tell me about that?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Because I find that quite interesting.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, I can tell you about
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: that one, too.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: So this is another initiative that I have that goes along with my other initiative, which I founded on social media.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Because I realized there wasn't a specific news source for the area that I live in.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: that has specific news related to technology opportunities, camps, and classes.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: So I decided to make a hub for just that, and I called it NAT, Girls News About Technology.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: And now I post to it every once in a while when there's an opportunity or a camp or some kind of event happening in the area that girls otherwise would maybe have difficulties hearing about or finding out about otherwise.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Are girls less likely to go into this field?
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: My girls love science, and they love technology, and they love computers and all that.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: So I see a lot of that in my home.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: But is it a normal thing for girls to go into science, or is this something that's now becoming a bigger thing?
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: It seems to be that girls in computer science, there aren't as many, and there's still not that many.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: And we're aiming to get more and more.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So I've seen several stats that have extremely low numbers for girls entering computer science fields.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Like 18% of high school women who take the AP computer science exam, the rest are men and young boys who are taking it.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So the numbers are slowly starting to rise.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: That was a few years ago.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: as they continue to rise...
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: as they continue to rise...
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: As they continue to rise, I feel like it's going to get a lot more different perspectives and different kinds of viewpoints about computer science and not just one type of computer program.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Maybe there'll be something geared for everyone.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: I
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: love that.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And because you've been in the field and you've been doing this for a few years now, you know, you're definitely probably seeing a bigger trend.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: But is there a reason why a lot of girls don't get into this kind of a field?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Because I absolutely find it fascinating myself.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And I wish that, you know what, I wish I would have learned more and probably gotten into something like this.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: But I don't know if it was, we didn't, a lot of the girls that I knew growing up weren't really into stuff like this.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: But is there, do you think there's something that, you know, holds a girl back from going into this?
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: I
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: think
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: a lot of girls just originally think computer science is just math or game design like shoot-em-up games, but that's not the entire picture.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: That's not computer science.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: That's not the only way that you can do it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: There's a lot more perspective to it.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: You could create just about anything.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: I encourage creative computer programming, creative design when it comes to computer programming.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Maybe there's something that could solve a problem that we don't even know about.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Or maybe there's a game that can teach everyone a concept that's far more than just a shoot-up game.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And you organize a learn to code day events, don't you?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I'd love you to tell us a little bit about that because my girls right now are learning to code.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: They're having a blast.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: So tell us a little bit about that.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: So with Learn to Code Days, this is another opportunity that I have that goes along with donating the technology equipment.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: So we mentor and organize these Learn to Code events at schools that we donate technology to or have connections with.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And we usually teach the students about animation of programming or creating a dance video, which is a student favorite with a lot of the third through fifth grade students that I work with.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: And they learn about basic programming skills, basic algorithms, a little bit of design.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: And in the end, they have a really cool video that they come out with using Scratch.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I have a lot of stories that come out of these learn to code days.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: So there was this one student once who was a young third grade girl who completed her programming class for the day she stood up on her desk with her animation and started dancing like her character and she was like I did it this is so cool and I had another student yell, I love coding, about three times during the class.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And a third student hugged me from behind.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: This was something I definitely did not expect at first.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: And it was so much impact on me.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: It had me realize that these students are learning the importance of computer science.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: They're learning the importance of creativity and sharing things with each other.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Oh,
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: What an important thing.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And good for you for doing this.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I just...
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: When you keep sharing this story, I'm always so inspired by what you're doing, Jocelyn.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And I do want to share with our listeners because a lot of them might not know you actually have won quite a few awards.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And I want you just to briefly share about that because I think it's important for our listeners to know exactly who they're talking to or they're listening
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: to.
- 9:59UNKNOWN: Okay.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I'll share a few of the awards I've received.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: So I've gotten the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for the state of Virginia when I was a junior in high school.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I got a She++ Include Award, and I got the Champion of Computer Science Award from the Computer Science Teachers Association and Code.org in 2018.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: I received an RVA Next Generation Award for Richmond, Virginia.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: There is a big annual Technology RBA Tech Ceremony every year.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: And I also received a scholarship at UNCG, UNC Greensboro, where I attend college now, called the Ethel Virginia Butler Blue and Gold Scholarship.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: But with those awards, that isn't my biggest accomplishment.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I feel that my biggest accomplishment is seeing the students and the teachers light up when they receive the technology and learning all about technology computer science and gaining more knowledge and passion and excitement for this.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: I look forward to bringing more computer science in the future to more classes.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, and I can see that.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And you know, listeners, this is exactly why Jocelyn is a part of the Diva family and we love having her on and we love showcasing her because she is so inspirational.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: She is empowering and she wants to make the world a better place.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: And you definitely are doing that one person at a time, Jocelyn.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm just so...
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: honored to get to know you and to learn all about you.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: So tell me, what is next in the things that you're going to be doing?
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: You're in university, but I want to hear what's next for you.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: So next up, I want to continue to spread the impact even more in Greensboro.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: and maybe even spread it even further than just Richmond and Greensboro to other larger areas.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: I'm also pursuing a degree in computer science with minors in new media and design and math, completing those along the way, as well as getting more top of the rock awards out and also looking for summer internship opportunities for this year involving creative computing, mentoring, and inspiring others.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love that.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: What a great thing.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: In regards to what you are doing, is there any way that our listeners can get involved and help you?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Do you need assistance?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Do you need volunteers?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Do you need donations?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Is there anything that you need from us?
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: We love donations
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: with GotTech.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: So since my last interview, we created a website that has all of our social media links and a little bit about us and places where you can donate.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: I will read it.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: I guess so that maybe our listeners can understand and know where to go.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: It is gottechrichmond.wixsite.com slash gottech, tech spelled T-E-C without the H.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: So that is a kind of a long address.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: I use a free website creator, though it had absolutely everything we needed to showcase our initiative and what we do.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: I have a You can also find us, if it's easier, on GoFundMe, search GotTech Richmond and GotTech Greensboro, and on CrowdRise, on Facebook, and on
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Twitter.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: This is awesome, because you know what?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: To all of our listeners, I will be posting...
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Jocelyn's website on all of our social media also because it is a great website for you to check out.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: It's a community initiative.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: They're looking for donations and funds.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So I think that's a really important thing to share out there, and we will definitely be doing that for you, Jocelyn.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, awesome.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: I could use that.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Well, and another thing I want to let all of our listeners know is that Jocelyn is one of the co-leaders authors, co-contributors to the Young Divas That Care book that the Divas That Care is putting out and will be available in January.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: So we're so excited that Jocelyn is a part of this program.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: I hope that you all check her out and read her amazing story.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And because all of our proceeds go to different charities for young girls and women, and I hope that, you know, like if you've got ideas for us of which charities where we can send our donations out to, We will do that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: We love those information and we love getting that out there.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: So you can definitely send us a message and we will consider that.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And Jocelyn, oh my goodness, thank you so much for taking the time today to be my amazing guest.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: As always, it is just a pleasure to hear what's going on with you.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Is there anything that you'd love to share with our listeners today?
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Any tips, tools for the girls out there listening?
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: I'll just leave with one major piece of advice that I give to all the girls that I talk to.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: So this is a special piece of advice for anyone who's looking for something to do with community service.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Just think about your passion, whatever it is you're passionate about.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's technology or maybe it's animals or music or dance or whatever it is.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: I always say when you combine your passion with your service, It is life-changing for both you and for those who you serve.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: And I've followed along with that with my initiative, CotTech.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And I hope you guys will take that piece of advice in mind when starting your own community service or initiative.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: That was beautiful advice.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for sharing that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: You were just, as I said, an inspiration, Jocelyn.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Thank you again.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And I hope that you come back on the program and share some more with us in the future.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Of course, I will definitely think about doing that.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Excellent.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And Jocelyn is going to be a part of our virtual summit for our young divas in 2020.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: So we will get back to all of our listeners.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: We will let you guys all know what's happening there.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And when we launch that, we will be posting that.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: on all of our social media.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: We have to check her out on that.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Again, thank you so much, Jocelyn.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Thank you to all of our amazing listeners that have been with us for almost 10 years.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: We appreciate each and every one of you.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: You are why we keep doing this program.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Please share our programs and please share this one with all your friends and family.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: We want to help Jocelyn out.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: We want to share her word and what she's doing with all of you today.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: If you can reach us at divasvetcare.com If you have any questions, please let us know.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: I hope that each and every one of you have an amazing day and do something kind for somebody.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Merry Christmas to you all.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Bye-bye for now.
