- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And when it is sown, it groweth up,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches,
- 0:11Speaker 1: so that the fowls of the air may lodge under
- 0:14Speaker 1: the shadow of it. Mark 4.32 Those who have ears
- 0:18Speaker 1: to hear, hear. These words are the staples in which
- 0:23Speaker 1: I am listening to today's reading. Lord, I thank you
- 0:27Speaker 1: that You've given me the Bible to help lead and
- 0:30Speaker 1: guide me in the way that I should live my life. Jesus,
- 0:36Speaker 1: thank you for being the personification of the living Word
- 0:40Speaker 1: here on earth. As I meditate on today's truth found
- 0:44Speaker 1: in Matthew 13 and Mark 4, 1-32, I realize that
- 0:49Speaker 1: your Word is the seed in which all my purpose
- 0:53Speaker 1: and destiny will blossom and come forth. Therefore, my heart
- 0:59Speaker 1: will not be like the soil that allowed your seed
- 1:02Speaker 1: to lay unprotected so that other people around me can
- 1:05Speaker 1: steal what you've deposited in me. My heart will not
- 1:10Speaker 1: be like the shallow soil that could not allow the
- 1:13Speaker 1: root of your word to take hold so that when
- 1:17Speaker 1: the trials of life come, it withers under the heat
- 1:20Speaker 1: of pressure. I also declare that I will not let
- 1:25Speaker 1: your word fall on the thorns of life and become
- 1:29Speaker 1: so focused on my trials that they choke your promises
- 1:33Speaker 1: out of my thoughts and speech. I declare that my
- 1:39Speaker 1: heart and my life is good soil. I declare that
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm healthy and ready to have your word produce a
- 1:49Speaker 1: crop of abundance, thirty, sixty, a hundredfold. In Jesus' name.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Amen.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 2:04Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story. Brought to
- 2:08Speaker 1: you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Many choices in life can be scary, but your health
- 2:14Speaker 3: care shouldn't be one of them. Did you know that
- 2:17Speaker 3: traditional insurance isn't your only option to take care of
- 2:20Speaker 3: your medical costs? Christian Health Care Ministries is created for you,
- 2:25Speaker 3: believers who expect more from their health care. The Four
- 2:29Speaker 3: Soils The Four Soils.
- 2:57Speaker 2: In our last story, Jesus accepted a sinful and broken
- 3:01Speaker 2: woman who had been scorned.
- 3:03Speaker 4: By the world.
- 3:04Speaker 2: He rebuked the Pharisees for their judgment. Now Jesus reveals
- 3:08Speaker 2: more about the kingdom of God through the story of
- 3:11Speaker 2: the four soils, inspired by the gospels.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 3:20Speaker 4: Bible in a Year podcast. In yesterday's episode, Jesus was
- 3:24Speaker 4: shown extravagant love and honor by a sinful woman who
- 3:28Speaker 4: entered a home and wiped the Lord's feet with her
- 3:30Speaker 4: tears and hair before bathing them in expensive perfume. Jesus
- 3:35Speaker 4: used this occasion to teach those gathered with him, many
- 3:38Speaker 4: of them religious leaders who felt that they were righteous
- 3:41Speaker 4: and justified by their good deeds, a lesson about forgiveness
- 3:45Speaker 4: and the proper response of those who have received that grace. Today,
- 3:50Speaker 4: We'll hear Jesus teaching about different ways in which God's
- 3:53Speaker 4: word is received and what happens to the seeds planted
- 3:56Speaker 4: in different kinds of soil. It's one of the most
- 3:59Speaker 4: famous stories Jesus ever gave. So let's hear it now
- 4:03Speaker 4: from the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 4:06Speaker 2: The seagulls flew gracefully across the face of the calm ocean.
- 4:11Speaker 2: The gentle breeze rocked the anchored boats slightly as Jesus
- 4:14Speaker 2: sat at the front of a ship. Thousands of people
- 4:17Speaker 2: sat on the shore, Listening to his words and wisdom,
- 4:21Speaker 2: they were enraptured by him. Jesus smiled and began to
- 4:24Speaker 2: speak of a farmer and his seed. There once was
- 4:28Speaker 2: a farmer, and he went out to sow his seed
- 4:30Speaker 2: among his land. Some of the seeds fell along the roadside.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They were vulnerable and easily swept up by the birds.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Other seeds fell on rocky soil. They sprung up quick
- 4:42Speaker 2: with water and sun, but they died just as quickly
- 4:45Speaker 2: because their roots could not go deep enough. Some of
- 4:48Speaker 2: the seed fell among thorny soil. Once they grew, the
- 4:52Speaker 2: weeds choked the life out of the plants. Jesus paused
- 4:56Speaker 2: for a moment and looked around the crowd. He stood
- 4:58Speaker 2: to his feet and lifted his finger, saying, But there
- 5:02Speaker 2: were some seeds that fell on good soil. It was soft, pleasant,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and yielded great fruit. Some of the crops increased thirtyfold
- 5:11Speaker 2: and sixtyfold, some even a hundredfold. Whoever has an ear
- 5:15Speaker 2: to truly hear Here. Then the people left back to
- 5:20Speaker 2: their homes, and Jesus was by the campfire with his disciples.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Silence fell among the disciples as they gazed at the stars.
- 5:28Speaker 2: The flames flew up to the skies. The sound of
- 5:31Speaker 2: popping wood and crashing waves filled the silence. Do you
- 5:35Speaker 2: understand the story I told them today? Jesus asked his disciples.
- 5:40Speaker 2: They looked up at him. If they were being honest,
- 5:43Speaker 2: none of them truly knew what he was saying. Jesus laughed.
- 5:47Speaker 2: How will you understand if you don't ask, he said
- 5:50Speaker 2: in jest. He picked up a stick and poked the fire.
- 5:54Speaker 2: The soil represents the word of God, Jesus said. The
- 5:58Speaker 2: seeds that fell on the road represent those that hear,
- 6:01Speaker 2: but Satan swoops up the truth like the birds. The
- 6:05Speaker 2: rocky soil represents those that receive the word with joy
- 6:08Speaker 2: at first, but when hard times fall, their root is
- 6:12Speaker 2: shallow and they fall away. The disciples began to nod.
- 6:17Speaker 2: They were understanding Jesus as he explained. The thorny soil
- 6:21Speaker 2: represents the cares and worries of the Word. Some are
- 6:24Speaker 2: so anxious that they are unable to truly receive truth.
- 6:28Speaker 2: They are choked by the worries and cares.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Of the world.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Jesus grinned from cheek to cheek. Then there's the good soil.
- 6:36Speaker 2: For those that hear the Word and accept it, they
- 6:39Speaker 2: do not toil or worry. They simply receive with gladness.
- 6:44Speaker 2: These are those that will bear much fruit for the
- 6:46Speaker 2: kingdom of God.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Our reading today is an illustration of the kinds of
- 6:53Speaker 4: hearts that receive God's truth and how the seeds of
- 6:56Speaker 4: truth grow or wither in each kind of soil. Jesus
- 7:01Speaker 4: is speaking to his followers, a larger crowd at first,
- 7:04Speaker 4: and he's using an agricultural image. This is something his
- 7:08Speaker 4: audience would have understood well. He spoke to the crowd,
- 7:12Speaker 4: telling them of a farmer who went out to spread seed.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Farming was much different in those days. No high-tech farming equipment,
- 7:19Speaker 4: of course. Precise planting of seeds in neat little rows.
- 7:23Speaker 4: This farmer was just walking across his plot of land
- 7:26Speaker 4: scattering seeds. It almost seemed haphazard. I picture a man
- 7:30Speaker 4: with a bag of seeds in one hand, dipping his
- 7:33Speaker 4: other hand into the bag and pulling out a handful
- 7:35Speaker 4: of seed that he tosses here and there, letting them
- 7:39Speaker 4: land where they may. So, as he walks along, the
- 7:42Speaker 4: seed falls on four different kinds of soil. Some doesn't
- 7:46Speaker 4: even make it to the ground. It hits the path
- 7:48Speaker 4: and birds quickly eat it up. Some falls among rocky ground,
- 7:53Speaker 4: and though they sprouted, the seeds lacked nutrients and water,
- 7:57Speaker 4: so the plants withered. A third bunch fell among the thorns.
- 8:01Speaker 4: The soil was good enough for the plants to grow,
- 8:03Speaker 4: but the environment around them was hazardous and toxic, and
- 8:07Speaker 4: the thorns choked out the crops. but some of the
- 8:11Speaker 4: seed fell in a good soil. It grew strong and
- 8:14Speaker 4: healthy and produced a great crop, yielding a hundredfold. That's
- 8:19Speaker 4: the good stuff. Jesus then said to the crowd, whoever
- 8:22Speaker 4: has ears to hear, let him hear. The disciples asked
- 8:26Speaker 4: why he spoke in parables, and he responded that the
- 8:30Speaker 4: secrets of the kingdom of heaven had not been given
- 8:32Speaker 4: to them but to the disciples. In other words, Jesus
- 8:36Speaker 4: was going to give these men special insight into the
- 8:39Speaker 4: things of God, into the kingdom of God, to prepare
- 8:42Speaker 4: them for what is to come. Jesus also said he
- 8:46Speaker 4: spoke in parables to reveal truth to those who would
- 8:48Speaker 4: respond to it and receive it. He said in Matthew 13,
- 8:53Speaker 4: 16 and 17, Blessed are your eyes because they see
- 8:56Speaker 4: and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you,
- 8:59Speaker 4: many prophets and righteous people long to see what you see,
- 9:05Speaker 4: The disciples were hungry for understanding, so Jesus explained this
- 9:12Speaker 4: parable to them. The seeds represented the Word of God,
- 9:17Speaker 4: and the soil represented human hearts. Some hear God's Word,
- 9:22Speaker 4: but the enemy comes and snatches away the Word. It
- 9:25Speaker 4: never takes root in the heart, so it never grows.
- 9:28Speaker 4: The rocky ground represents the hearts that accept the Word quickly,
- 9:32Speaker 4: but the hearts that but without any depth. The root
- 9:34Speaker 4: of truth doesn't establish itself, and so when troubles arise,
- 9:39Speaker 4: those people fall away from the Word. Still others, represented
- 9:44Speaker 4: by the thorny ground, receive the Word and it sprouts
- 9:47Speaker 4: in their heart, but worldly worries choke them out and
- 9:50Speaker 4: they never produce any fruit. The good soil represents the
- 9:55Speaker 4: heart that receives the Word and bears much fruit. This
- 9:59Speaker 4: is the heart of the believer who understands God's word.
- 10:03Speaker 4: The truth of the gospel grows in their heart and
- 10:05Speaker 4: they yield fruit for the kingdom because they believe what
- 10:09Speaker 4: God has said. That's an important word for us here.
- 10:13Speaker 4: As believers today, we are to be sowers of seeds
- 10:15Speaker 4: and We are to give the gospel to the world
- 10:19Speaker 4: and spread it to the hearts of men. The yield
- 10:22Speaker 4: does not depend on us, and we are not to
- 10:25Speaker 4: pick and choose where we sow the seed. We are
- 10:27Speaker 4: to share all the gospel with all men until the
- 10:31Speaker 4: whole world hears. Some will receive the truth and yield fruit,
- 10:37Speaker 4: but others, for various reasons, will either never receive the
- 10:40Speaker 4: word or will never bear fruit. Nevertheless, It is the
- 10:44Speaker 4: calling of every one of us who name the name
- 10:47Speaker 4: of Christ, who are followers of Jesus, to be witnesses
- 10:50Speaker 4: of the gospel, to sow the seeds of truth, and
- 10:54Speaker 4: to trust God for the harvest. God, we thank you
- 10:58Speaker 4: that your word is always effective, that it always accomplishes
- 11:02Speaker 4: your purposes. May we boldly proclaim your truth. Thank you
- 11:08Speaker 4: that we have been called to participate in the ministry
- 11:10Speaker 4: of the gospel by sowing seeds among men and women,
- 11:14Speaker 4: that as many as will receive Christ can be saved
- 11:16Speaker 4: by your grace and your love because of your cross
- 11:20Speaker 4: and resurrection. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
