- 1:12All right, guys.
- 1:14Let's kick this show off.
- 1:15We have a very good Master Topic.
- 1:17We always have good Master Topics.
- 1:18So it is Sunday.
- 1:20The Master Topic is Owning Your Power, Intentional
- 1:26Choices.
- 1:26And today, we are talking Series 5, Show
- 1:2911, Episode 2.
- 1:30It's Sunday, Mindful Awareness and Self-Control, yeah.
- 1:36So who am I?
- 1:37Oh, great.
- 1:38I'm John C.
- 1:39Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:43podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, passionate
- 1:47lifelong learner.
- 1:49Oh, yes, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:50And pretty soon, I'm going to be a
- 1:52published author.
- 1:53Very excited about that.
- 1:54So again, today, I'm diving into mindful awareness
- 1:57and self-control and how these practices create
- 2:00unstoppable personal power.
- 2:02Every thought, pause, and deliberate action shapes your
- 2:06energy, your clarity, and long-term success.
- 2:10Let's break it down, shall we, with actionable
- 2:12points.
- 2:13And I'll integrate this for you today so
- 2:15you can make it really easy.
- 2:16So it's about mindful awareness.
- 2:18And I want you to notice your impulses
- 2:21to gain control.
- 2:24Catch yourself before reacting.
- 2:26Awareness, guys, is power.
- 2:29Yes, being aware is power.
- 2:31Pausing turns reaction into clarity.
- 2:34A simple breath or count can redirect automatic
- 2:39responses.
- 2:42Awareness, guys, sharpens decision-making, all right?
- 2:46That's key.
- 2:47Observing your choices makes them deliberate when we
- 2:50observe our choices.
- 2:51Because when we observe something, we can then
- 2:55move to the next step.
- 2:56We can then take action on it.
- 3:00Self-control, guys.
- 3:02It preserves energy.
- 3:04Guard your focus like a valuable resource that
- 3:07you have.
- 3:09Boundaries protect focus, guys.
- 3:11Saying no isn't rude.
- 3:13It's essential for your progress.
- 3:17Avoid distractions that we can resolve.
- 3:21Detect subtle energy leaks before they escalate, before
- 3:26they turn into a major flood, right?
- 3:28When there's a little break in a little
- 3:30leak in a pipe, easy to fix it,
- 3:32as opposed to when there's big breaks and
- 3:37then the whole pipe could just explode.
- 3:39Detect subtle energy leaks before they escalate so
- 3:42you can get a handle of them.
- 3:45Micro decisions accumulate into mastery.
- 3:48Small intentional choices compound daily.
- 3:51So we have to realize one thing, guys,
- 3:54and that is our small decisions turn into
- 3:58our big successes, okay?
- 4:01They compound.
- 4:02Yes, they do.
- 4:03Observing triggers prevents mistakes.
- 4:06Anticipate emotional or habitual pitfalls.
- 4:10Conscious action builds confidence.
- 4:12Each deliberate step reinforces self-trust.
- 4:15Mindfulness reduces stress, guys.
- 4:17Being present, I talked about this the other
- 4:19day, minimizes unnecessary mental strain.
- 4:23So there's a lot of reasons we want
- 4:24to be present.
- 4:27Attention, guys.
- 4:28Attention strengthens intentionality.
- 4:32Let me say that again.
- 4:33Attention strengthens intentionality.
- 4:37I'll say that 100 times fast.
- 4:39Attention strengthens intentionality.
- 4:41Where focus goes, energy flows.
- 4:45Awareness highlights hidden opportunities.
- 4:48So notice what others overlook and see how
- 4:53you can make that difference in your life
- 4:55by observing and maybe acting in a different
- 5:00manner, in a different way.
- 5:04And, you know, it's important to understand, all
- 5:10right?
- 5:10Really important to understand and not overlook that.
- 5:13So resisting short-term temptations.
- 5:16I know we get short-term temptations because
- 5:18we want to get the short-term gratification
- 5:20so we feel that if we do this,
- 5:21then, well, we can just skip ahead.
- 5:24But I want to tell you guys, you
- 5:26can't skip ahead, all right?
- 5:27You really can't because you're going to pay
- 5:28the price later.
- 5:29Whether it's money, whether it's other resources, whether
- 5:32it's relationships, reputation.
- 5:35Resisting short-term temptations compounds power.
- 5:40So if you don't jump all at once,
- 5:42that's like the long-term gratification of the
- 5:44short, you can get more.
- 5:46Delayed gratification fuels growth.
- 5:49It sure does.
- 5:50Self-control amplifies productivity.
- 5:53So less distraction, more progress.
- 5:56Focused attention grows resilience.
- 6:00Train your mind to stay steady under pressure.
- 6:05Mindful reflection enhances judgment.
- 6:09Mindful reflection, not just reflection out of the
- 6:12whim.
- 6:14Pause, guys.
- 6:15I said before, pausing doesn't mean you're taking
- 6:18a break.
- 6:19Pause means you're reflecting.
- 6:21So pause to learn from outcomes before reacting.
- 6:27Pause to learn from outcomes before you react,
- 6:30all right?
- 6:32Recognize harmful patterns protects growth like insurance companies
- 6:38and things like that.
- 6:38They look at patterns, credit agencies and credit
- 6:42card companies, they look at patterns to see,
- 6:44is this a behavior that we should reward
- 6:47or give more credit to or not?
- 6:49They look at certain patterns because they know
- 6:50if other people react.
- 6:53It's not nice to say, but they look
- 6:54at the pool and they figure that if
- 6:57the masses act this way, you probably act
- 6:59that way too.
- 6:59So they look for patterns, all right?
- 7:02Recognizing the harmful patterns protects growth, awareness, prevents
- 7:06repeated mistakes.
- 7:09So deliberate thought guides behavior.
- 7:14Align with your values, guys, yeah.
- 7:18Awareness fuels emotional balance.
- 7:21Understanding triggers allows calmer responses.
- 7:25When we are calmer, we respond in a
- 7:29different manner.
- 7:30We don't respond in the reactive mode.
- 7:33We respond in the more of the proactive
- 7:35mode.
- 7:36Micro habits, strength and character.
- 7:39Small consistent wins define long-term identity.
- 7:44Conscious choices prevent regret.
- 7:47Don't let inattention steal your peace.
- 7:50That happens to so many people.
- 7:51They lose their peace because of inattention.
- 7:56Energy preservation enables long-term achievement.
- 8:00Avoid burnout with smart pacing.
- 8:03Everybody wants to get everything done tomorrow, right?
- 8:05But is that logical?
- 8:06No, that's what we have to plan things
- 8:08out.
- 8:08We have to have a schedule.
- 8:10I think that's a very important thing to
- 8:14understand of that because when you understand that,
- 8:18it can make you realize why things are
- 8:22different or why things are not going the
- 8:24way you want.
- 8:25Energy preservation enables long-term achievement.
- 8:29Avoid burnout with smart pacing.
- 8:32If you're in a race or you're in
- 8:34a marathon, you don't win the marathon by
- 8:37running the whole race at the same intensity.
- 8:40You have to dial it back a little
- 8:42bit.
- 8:42Dial up, dial back, and you have to
- 8:44kind of like do that flutter back and
- 8:46forth.
- 8:51Awareness multiplies impact.
- 8:53Focused action creates a ripple effect.
- 8:56When we're focused, we get a ripple which
- 8:59can affect other things in the downstream.
- 9:02Self-discipline builds internal authority.
- 9:05Self-discipline, that's discipline that you've decided to
- 9:08execute, not somebody else has told you to
- 9:10do.
- 9:12Master yourself before seeking external control.
- 9:16Clear limits, clarify priorities.
- 9:19Boundaries provide direction and chaos.
- 9:22When things are chaotic and you have a
- 9:25structure, you'll find that it's a lot easier.
- 9:28If you ever noticed in, unfortunately, emergency situations,
- 9:31it gets very chaotic, but you'll notice that
- 9:34when the first responders we get on site,
- 9:36we kind of get things underhandled, under wraps,
- 9:40and we get people to be calm.
- 9:42We give the right information.
- 9:44We give people comfort, not just in the
- 9:47services provided, but in the way we're treating
- 9:50them psychologically.
- 9:53Mindful focus, guys, enhances execution.
- 9:57Every step is deliberate.
- 9:59And guys, you know what else it is?
- 10:01It is effective.
- 10:05We take a step, we take another step.
- 10:07We don't take one and a half steps.
- 10:09We don't take a half a step.
- 10:10We don't take three steps.
- 10:11We keep taking one step, one step, one
- 10:13step, one step, one step, one step.
- 10:16And as we do that, we actually cause
- 10:19ourselves to get closer to what we're trying
- 10:21to do.
- 10:24Observing surroundings sharpens strategy.
- 10:28The best example I can give for this
- 10:30has to be sports.
- 10:35If you're aware of your team, right?
- 10:39Let's think about something called offsides.
- 10:40Everybody know what offsides is?
- 10:43Anybody here play sports?
- 10:44If I asked if I could ask that
- 10:46question.
- 10:47So what is offsides, let's say in soccer?
- 10:52Does anybody know what that is?
- 10:54All right, so I'm gonna try to explain
- 10:56this, observing your surroundings.
- 10:58So when you play soccer, you need to
- 11:00be onside ultimate.
- 11:00The first time I played before I was
- 11:02even on a team that was getting trophies,
- 11:04you have to understand what offsides means.
- 11:06So offsides in soccer happens when an attacking
- 11:08player gains an unfair advantage by being too
- 11:11close to the opponent's goal when the ball
- 11:14is past them.
- 11:15The core rule is this.
- 11:17They are closer to the opponent's goal than
- 11:19the ball.
- 11:19They are closer to the goal than the
- 11:22second to the last defender, or they are
- 11:24actively involved in the play.
- 11:26If those conditions happen when the ball was
- 11:29passed, the referee stops play, blows the whistle,
- 11:33and the defending team gets a free kick.
- 11:36Now, the second to last defender rule.
- 11:38Many people think it is the last defender,
- 11:41but it is actually the second to last
- 11:43defender.
- 11:44Usually, this is what it means.
- 11:45The last defender is the goalkeeper, okay?
- 11:48The second to last defender is the last
- 11:51field defender.
- 11:51So the attacker must have at least one
- 11:54defender between them and the goal when the
- 11:57pass is made.
- 11:58If they don't, that's considered unfair.
- 12:02Some important details to understand.
- 12:03A player, the rule is basically judged on
- 12:06the moment the ball is passed, not when
- 12:09the player receives it.
- 12:10That's another important thing.
- 12:11A player can run past defenders after the
- 12:15pass and still be legal.
- 12:17But situations that are, we consider not offsides,
- 12:21a corner kick, a throw-in, a goal
- 12:24kick.
- 12:25Some simple examples.
- 12:27Attacker runs behind all defenders.
- 12:31The teammate passes the ball forward to them.
- 12:34At the moment of the pass, the attacker
- 12:36was already past the defender.
- 12:38That is offsides.
- 12:41So you cannot cherry pick near the goal
- 12:44waiting for a pass.
- 12:46That's the best way to think about it.
- 12:49And so I know this sounds crazy, but
- 12:51when we think about observing, right, it's pretty
- 12:54easy when we can acknowledge what happens.
- 12:57So here's the trick, guys.
- 12:59Watch the passer and the last defender at
- 13:02the exact moment the ball is kicked, okay?
- 13:07Then ask one question.
- 13:09Was the attacker ahead of the second, basically
- 13:16was the second to last defender, which again
- 13:17is gonna be the one outside the goal,
- 13:23okay?
- 13:24Was the attacker ahead of the second to
- 13:28last defender, which is always we count the
- 13:30one outside the goal.
- 13:31If yes, offsides.
- 13:34If no, we're onside, but we don't usually
- 13:36say onside.
- 13:37So the moment of pass matters.
- 13:40So a player can start even with the
- 13:41defender, can sprint past the defender after the
- 13:44pass and receive the ball legally because they
- 13:46were onside at the moment of the pass.
- 13:49What the referee watches is the line of
- 13:51the second to the last defender the moment
- 13:53the ball is kicked.
- 13:55An easy way to think about this.
- 13:56Imagine a laser line across the field at
- 13:59the last defender.
- 14:00If the attacker, okay, is past that laser
- 14:05line when the pass happens, it's offside.
- 14:07So imagine a laser line across the field
- 14:11at the last defender, okay, across the field.
- 14:16If, okay, the attacker is past that line
- 14:23when the pass happens, it is offsides.
- 14:27If they're on the line or behind it,
- 14:30they're legal.
- 14:32So this is that confuses a lot of
- 14:34people.
- 14:35A player standing behind the defender is not
- 14:37automatically offside.
- 14:39They're only offside if the ball is passed
- 14:41to them while they are there and they
- 14:44participate in the play.
- 14:45So if they don't participate in the play,
- 14:48then they're not offside.
- 14:50So you have to be careful on that.
- 14:51So offside is the most misunderstood rule in
- 14:53soccer, even among some of the longtime fans.
- 14:56And it's still confusing.
- 14:57But the reason I was bringing this out
- 14:58is that observing your environment is key to
- 15:01not getting penalized in sports, okay?
- 15:05So you need to know your surroundings.
- 15:07Observing surroundings, sharpest strategy, adapt proactively, not reactively.
- 15:11So when it happens, just adjust, don't freak
- 15:14out about it.
- 15:15Intentional restraint, boosts influence.
- 15:19Self-mastery is magnetic to others.
- 15:22Awareness aligns actions with values.
- 15:25Ensure your behavior reflects what you believe.
- 15:28Daily self-control compounds personal power.
- 15:32Every day you practice intentional living, you strengthen
- 15:36your foundation for success.
- 15:40So the more that we exercise, the better
- 15:44we get, right?
- 15:45But it's not just in weights.
- 15:47It's also in our minds, it's in our
- 15:48thinking, it's in our goal setting.
- 15:51The more that we practice that muscle, the
- 15:54more that the pathways from our left hemisphere
- 15:59and our right hemisphere, they connect.
- 16:02The more that we have, the smarter we
- 16:04are because more resources from different parts of
- 16:06the brain connect.
- 16:07And that's a very, very powerful thing, guys.
- 16:11A lot of people think that if you
- 16:13just study something once, you're gonna learn it.
- 16:16You've got to create neural pathways in your
- 16:18brain.
- 16:19If you can create neural pathways in your
- 16:21brain, you know what happens?
- 16:23You start to make the connection chemical, right?
- 16:27But you make it physical through the chemical,
- 16:29which is kind of cool if you ask
- 16:31me.
- 16:31So the more connections you have, the smarter
- 16:36you are.
- 16:37The more you have things linking from one
- 16:38side of the brain to the other side
- 16:40of the brain.
- 16:42And a question just came in and it's
- 16:45a very, very question I'm gonna answer for
- 16:46you guys.
- 16:47Somebody just asked me, what does the left
- 16:51side of the brain, yep, a good question,
- 16:55versus the right side, right?
- 16:59Versus the right side of the brain control.
- 17:04And that's a great question because the left
- 17:07brain versus right brain, and we could talk
- 17:09about this for a long time, but the
- 17:11human brain is two hemispheres, right?
- 17:13The left brain is generally associated with logic,
- 17:17L, logic, left brain, and structured thinking, speaking,
- 17:21reading, writing, grammar, okay?
- 17:24Mathematics, reasoning, problem solving, step-by-step thinking,
- 17:29algorithms, following instructions, organizing information, analytics,
- 17:33technical processing, that's left, logic.
- 17:35Right side deals with creativity, spatial thinking, art,
- 17:42music, imagination, recognizing faces, understanding maps, judging distances,
- 17:47interpreting tone of voice, pattern recognition, conceptual understanding.
- 17:52So you can see that you need both
- 17:55sides to be very intelligent.
- 17:58Just one side is not enough.
- 18:00And I hope that gives us another understanding
- 18:02to what this is about.
- 18:03So a big myth about the left versus
- 18:05the right.
- 18:06People often say someone is left brain to
- 18:07right brain.
- 18:08Modern neuroscience shows this is mostly a myth.
- 18:12Both hemispheres are active for almost every task.
- 18:15For example, music uses both hemispheres.
- 18:17Language is used mostly the left, but tone
- 18:20and emotion use the right.
- 18:22Problem solving, you use both sides.
- 18:24The brain works like high-speed network.
- 18:27Then the two separate processors connect, basically.
- 18:30That's how it works.
- 18:31So logic is creativity.
- 18:35Logic is left brain.
- 18:37Language is left brain.
- 18:40Math, detail, controls.
- 18:41Right is creativity, emotion, art, big picture controls.
- 18:46Music, that's right brain.
- 18:50Left is all the science type stuff.
- 18:56And I think sometimes we're told something and
- 19:01we believe that's the way it is.
- 19:02But a lot of times, it's not 100
- 19:04% true.
- 19:07The left side of the brain controls the
- 19:09language and the analytical processing.
- 19:13The right side controls spatial awareness, visual perception,
- 19:17your depth perception.
- 19:20It comes from the right side.
- 19:22So hopefully you learned a little something there.
- 19:24But as we're aware of things in our
- 19:27society, we talk about awareness every once in
- 19:29a while.
- 19:29Because awareness takes us out of the noise,
- 19:35out of the chattering monkeys, and it brings
- 19:37us right here now.
- 19:42That's pretty cool.
- 19:45So thinking about mindful awareness, thinking about how
- 19:51you live every day, thinking about some reflection,
- 19:56because I think that's a key point, some
- 19:58takeaway reflection for today.
- 20:01We talked about turning awareness into action.
- 20:07The common one I always use is a
- 20:09fire, because everybody can relate to it.
- 20:14When we are aware of the situation and
- 20:18we prepared ahead of time, like firemen do,
- 20:21first responders do, you go through training.
- 20:23So now when the fire happens, you're not
- 20:26so discombobulated, right?
- 20:29I'll give a perfect example.
- 20:30So I'm studying for one of my master's
- 20:32tests in college, and the professor gives some
- 20:36very interesting problems.
- 20:38And so a lot of it is not
- 20:41just doing the work, but it's how to
- 20:43test.
- 20:44This one particular professor is deciding that he
- 20:48wants to use Scantron.
- 20:50So we have to use a number two
- 20:51pencil to be able to take the test.
- 20:55Go crazy, I know.
- 20:57But the more you practice doing something in
- 21:02a type of environment, the more that's gonna
- 21:04pop to you.
- 21:05So let me give you an example.
- 21:07So as I'm studying for this test, we
- 21:09have about 20 problems that are basically gonna
- 21:12be on the test.
- 21:13And so, for example, one of the problems
- 21:14on here, you go through it, the second
- 21:17one, there's a third one, a fourth.
- 21:18And so looking at these problems at first,
- 21:20it looks intimidating.
- 21:21I'll be quite honest with you.
- 21:23But when you do this over and over
- 21:25again, it's like, oh, I get it.
- 21:28It's like you suddenly understand it.
- 21:31Does that make sense?
- 21:32Okay.
- 21:32So having an awareness for knowledge is one
- 21:37thing, but also having awareness for test-taking
- 21:40is another.
- 21:42So today we are talking a lot about
- 21:44awareness and how we could turn awareness into
- 21:47action with preparing for a potential fire.
- 21:53If we're aware of the situation, then we
- 21:56can actually be more comfortable in the situation.
- 22:01No one's ever comfortable in a fire.
- 22:03Same thing with the test.
- 22:03The more that I practice being in that
- 22:06environment, the more that that environment actually is
- 22:08more comfortable to me.
- 22:10First, when I look at that test, I'm
- 22:11like, oh my gosh, I actually gotta take
- 22:12that test.
- 22:13But the more I'm like, hey, wait a
- 22:14minute, I'm getting problems just like this, and
- 22:15it's getting easier for me.
- 22:18So again, we talked a lot today about
- 22:20turning the awareness that we have into action.
- 22:25When we're aware about something on a sports
- 22:27field, like soccer, we can turn to action.
- 22:30We can make sure that we move our
- 22:31bodies so we are not offside on the
- 22:34soccer or whatever field we're on, if it's
- 22:36basketball or whatever.
- 22:38Self-control, guys, is not restriction.
- 22:43Huh?
- 22:44Yeah, I know this is weird.
- 22:48It's freedom.
- 22:50When we have a slight barrier that we
- 22:56can peruse through, we actually have more freedom
- 23:01to roam within that.
- 23:03When we get more comfortable about what we're
- 23:05doing, like, you know, I've told you to
- 23:07prepare for a fire, make sure that you
- 23:09have all the necessary things, right?
- 23:11I'm not gonna go through that today.
- 23:12But, you know, making sure you do the
- 23:14right things, make sure you practice, have a
- 23:15place to meet, all these type of things.
- 23:17Checking your smoke detector, things like that.
- 23:20Make sure everything's ready so that when that
- 23:22happens, you're like, oh, wait a minute.
- 23:23We just did this.
- 23:24We had these exercises.
- 23:26Same thing with my test.
- 23:27Oh, I had these exercises.
- 23:27Oh, I did exercise.
- 23:28Oh, just like my exercise, just my practice.
- 23:31So practice doesn't make you perfect.
- 23:34A wise person once told me this.
- 23:35Practice makes you better, right?
- 23:39It might be perfect, but you're gonna get
- 23:40better.
- 23:42So self-control, guys, is not restriction.
- 23:45It is true freedom.
- 23:47Now, each impulse you take and every deliberate
- 23:51action compounds into momentum, momentum.
- 23:59The desire gets the motor started, the engine
- 24:01started.
- 24:02Momentum keeps it going, right?
- 24:05So the, let's say the spark gets the
- 24:09engine going, right?
- 24:10What keeps it going is the fuel in
- 24:12the car, right?
- 24:13The gas.
- 24:16So it compounds into momentum, and this in
- 24:19your life will drive you forward to reach
- 24:22your goals.
- 24:24Your focus, ladies and gentlemen, boundaries and mindful
- 24:27attention are the true tools that can convert
- 24:31energy, because our world is all about energy,
- 24:34into lasting results.
- 24:37But it's not like turning on a switch
- 24:39and suddenly it works.
- 24:40We've gotta become aware of ourselves and how
- 24:44we are intertangled in the energy of our
- 24:49world.
- 24:51That's deep.
- 24:54The way you choose to act or not
- 24:56act can actually affect the outcome of something.
- 25:06That's pretty cool, guys.
- 25:12That's very, very cool, if you ask me.
- 25:16Extremely cool.
- 25:18So where am I going with this?
- 25:20I've gone through a lot of different techniques
- 25:22today.
- 25:23And these techniques will help you to reach
- 25:30your goals, to become a better version of
- 25:32yourself, to help other people reach their goals.
- 25:36You need to realize you gotta practice.
- 25:39You use these practices to protect your energy,
- 25:43which is really important, your clarity, so you
- 25:48know what your priorities are.
- 25:51And this in turn, guys, you know what
- 25:52it does?
- 25:54It multiplies your personal power daily.

- 26:11Smart is key.
- 26:13Start small.
- 26:15Notice an impulse, just one impulse, and take
- 26:19one deliberate action to pause and pause, intentional
- 26:24choice.
- 26:28Maybe you're studying, and maybe instead of blowing
- 26:30through all the questions, like, wait a minute,
- 26:31I need to pause, I need to reflect.
- 26:32I need to figure out where I'm going
- 26:35with this.
- 26:39Compound these ideas daily for unstoppable growth.
- 26:45Growth doesn't happen because I suddenly snap my
- 26:49fingers.
- 26:50It'd be nice, but there's no alignment with
- 26:53snapping my fingers or even clapping my hands.
- 26:56The energy's gotta be in alignment with who
- 26:59we are and what we do, and what
- 27:03we do can create our success.
