- 0:52of the God of the universe coming down to human form, born
- 0:58on this very morning so that we can know God.
- 1:02Oh, what a wonderful thing. Let's read this chapter
- 1:06together. Let us celebrate Christmas.
- 1:08Merry Christmas to you friends and God bless you as we read
- 1:12together. Luke chapter 2.
- 1:25At that time, the Roman Emperor Augustus decreed that a census
- 1:30should be taken throughout the Roman Empire.
- 1:32This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of
- 1:36Syria. All returned to their own
- 1:39ancestral towns to register for this census.
- 1:42And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had
- 1:45to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient home.
- 1:50He travelled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.
- 1:53He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now
- 1:57expecting a child. And while they were there, the
- 2:01time came for her baby to be born.
- 2:04She gave birth to her first born son.
- 2:07She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a
- 2:11Manger. Because there was no lodging
- 2:13available for them that night, there were shepherds staying in
- 2:17the fields near by, guarding their flocks of sheep.
- 2:21Suddenly an Angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the
- 2:24radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them.
- 2:27They were terrified, but the Angel reassured them.
- 2:31Don't be afraid, he said. I bring you good news that will
- 2:36bring great joy to all people. The Saviour, yes, the Messiah.
- 2:41The Lord has been born to day in Bethlehem, the city of David,
- 2:47and you will recognise him by this sign.
- 2:50You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying
- 2:54in a Manger. Suddenly the Angel was joined by
- 2:58a vast host of others, the armies of heaven, praising God
- 3:03and saying, Glory to God in highest heaven and peace on
- 3:09earth to those with whom God is pleased.
- 3:14When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to
- 3:17each other, Let's go to Bethlehem.
- 3:20Let's see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has
- 3:22told us about. They hurried to the village and
- 3:26found Mary and Joseph, and there was the baby lying in the
- 3:31Manger. After seeing him, the shepherds
- 3:34told everyone what had happened and what the Angel had said to
- 3:37them about this child. All who heard the shepherd's
- 3:40story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her
- 3:45heart and thought about them. Often.
- 3:48The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising
- 3:52God for all they had heard and seen.
- 3:55It was just as the Angel had told them.
- 3:59Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named
- 4:04Jesus, the name given him by the Angel even before he was
- 4:08conceived. Then it was time for their
- 4:11purification offering as required by the Law of Moses
- 4:15after the birth of a child. So his parents took him to
- 4:18Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.
- 4:21The Law of the Lord says if a woman's first child is a boy, he
- 4:26must be dedicated to the Lord. So they offer the sacrifice
- 4:30required in the Law of the Lord, either a pair of turtle doves or
- 4:35two young pigeons. At that time, there was a man in
- 4:39Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and
- 4:44was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue
- 4:47Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and
- 4:50had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen
- 4:54the Lord's Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to
- 4:58the temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to
- 5:02present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon
- 5:07was there. He took the child in his arms
- 5:10and praised God, saying, Sovereign Lord, now let your
- 5:15servant die in peace as you have promised.
- 5:20I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all
- 5:24people. He is a light to reveal God to
- 5:29the nations and He is the glory of your people, Israel.
- 5:35Jesus parents were amazed at what was being said about him.
- 5:39Then Simeon blessed them and he said to Mary, the baby's mother.
- 5:43This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall and many
- 5:49others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from
- 5:53God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest
- 5:58thoughts of many hearts will be revealed, and a sword will
- 6:02Pierce your very soul. Anna, a prophet, was also there
- 6:08in the temple. She was the daughter of Faneuil
- 6:11from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old.
- 6:14Her husband died when she had been married, only seven years.
- 6:18Then she lived as a widow to the age of 84.
- 6:22She never left the temple, but stayed there day and night
- 6:26worshipping God with fasting and prayer.
- 6:29She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph
- 6:33and she began praising God. She talked about the child to
- 6:37everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue
- 6:40Jerusalem. When Jesus parents had fulfilled
- 6:43all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home
- 6:47to Nazareth in Galilee. There the child grew up healthy
- 6:51and strong. He was filled with wisdom and
- 6:54God's favour was on him. Every year Jesus parents went to
- 6:59Jerusalem for the Passover festival.
- 7:01When Jesus was 12 years old. They attended the festival as
- 7:05usual. After the celebration was over,
- 7:08they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in
- 7:12Jerusalem. His parents didn't miss him at
- 7:14first because they assumed he was among the other travellers.
- 7:18But when he didn't show up that evening, they started looking
- 7:21for him among their relatives and friends.
- 7:24When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to
- 7:27search for him there. Three days later, they finally
- 7:31discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious
- 7:34teachers, listening to them and asking questions.
- 7:38All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his
- 7:42answers. His parents didn't know what to
- 7:44think. Son, his mother said to him, why
- 7:48have you done this to us? Your father and I have been
- 7:51frantic searching for you everywhere.
- 7:55But why did you need to search? He asked.
- 7:58Didn't you know that I must be in my father's house?
- 8:01But they didn't understand what he meant.
- 8:04Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to
- 8:07them. And his mother stored all these
- 8:10things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and in
- 8:15stature and in favour with God and all the people.
- 8:29What a joy it is to celebrate your coming today.
- 8:32Jesus, thank you that You gave up the creature comforts of
- 8:37heaven and eternity to come and be bound by a mortal body and
- 8:43time and space. We don't understand the depths
- 8:49of your love and therefore we cannot understand why you would
- 8:52choose to do this. But you did, and today is proof
- 8:56of that. And so we just praise you, our
- 9:00incredible Saviour, born this day so that you could be known
- 9:05by us. And know you we do.
- 9:09We just want to know you more and more every day.
- 9:12So just broaden our hearts and broaden our minds to know more
- 9:17of you today and every day and to know more of your love.
- 9:23Ah, you're the best and we love you Jesus.
- 9:25And we pray this in your precious and wonderful name.
- 9:29Amen.
