- 0:00Welcome to Season 2 of Go Wildly podcast.
- 0:03We are Emily and Heather, 2 childhood friends who carry a
- 0:06mic into wild places like rivers, trails, and forests with
- 0:10wild people to host raw, honest conversations about adventure,
- 0:15healing, identity, and the transformative power of nature.
- 0:19In this season, we're centering the voices of people who call
- 0:22Southern Oregon home. Outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor
- 0:25professionals whose lives have been shaped, changed, or are
- 0:28continually influenced by time outside.
- 0:31Come along as together we go wildly.
- 0:37Hey, you wildly wonder. Thank you so very much for
- 0:40listening to the podcast. It means the world to us.
- 0:44OK, I have a little mission. Pause the podcast right here.
- 0:47Make sure that you're subscribed to this guy.
- 0:49OK? It's going to be a fun time over
- 0:51here. And if you so wish, we would
- 0:54love a five star review or whatever your hearts inclined to
- 0:57do. Also, leaving us a review truly
- 1:00helps the algorithm and we appreciate you doing that.
- 1:03Thank you so very much. Also, little tidbit over on
- 1:06Instagram, we're having so much fun over there.
- 1:08Lots of behind the scene footage, some PO VS just some
- 1:12fun unhinged content. If you love the pod, that's
- 1:15where we go wildly for sure. So don't forget to follow us
- 1:18over there. OK, before we dive in, this
- 1:21episode is brought to you by Southern Oregon Martial Arts
- 1:24Academy. They're offering Go Wildly
- 1:26listeners a free two week trial. And honestly, today's
- 1:30conversation is going to make you want to take them up on it.
- 1:33More on that in a second. Let's get into it.
- 1:38Hi, Are we on? Yeah, great, wonderful.
- 1:41Good morning. Welcome to TODAY.
- 1:44We're doing it. Today on Go Wildly, we are
- 1:48floating downstream with Jesse Newell.
- 1:50Wait, what day is it? Today is Monday, January 25th.
- 1:556th and we are boating. And we are going boating.
- 1:59It's the 26th, yes, January 26th and.
- 2:01We're going boating in the winter.
- 2:03In the winter, no fog. No fog.
- 2:05It's the first day without freezing fog in the morning in
- 2:08like 4 plus weeks. It's the perfect day to spend on
- 2:12the water in the winter. I'm excited.
- 2:14It's. Going to be a great day.
- 2:16We're floating from Chinook Park to Baker Park in Grants Pass and
- 2:22it's going to be wonderful. So Jesse here grew up in
- 2:26Ventura, CA, right by the ocean, where fishing with his dad
- 2:30shaped his love for water, solitude and slowing down.
- 2:34As the place he called home grew faster and louder, the things
- 2:38that once grounded him began to disappear, and home no longer
- 2:42felt like home. And Southern Oregon have been
- 2:45calling Jesse for years. So after a long period of
- 2:48burnout, the end of a major relationship, and working just
- 2:52to survive, he finally listened. And in January of 2024, just two
- 2:56years ago, yes, he packed up and moved north in search of a
- 3:01slower pace and a clean slate. What he found here, no surprise,
- 3:05was grounding and growth. Today, Jesse is the owner and
- 3:09head coach of Southern Oregon Martial Arts Academy where he
- 3:12trains people of all ages, including me.
- 3:15That's How I Met Jesse in self-defense and builds a strong
- 3:19power based community. We are so excited to have Jesse
- 3:23here with us today to talk about the outdoor moments that shaped
- 3:27him and what it takes to start over when a place calls you
- 3:30home. And it's perfect for our theme
- 3:33of our second season here, where we are really highlighting the
- 3:36voices of Southern Oregon and why people call Southern Oregon
- 3:40home, and especially those who have chosen to move here versus
- 3:44US who grew up here and continue to choose to live here, but
- 3:48folks who have come from other places and specifically chose
- 3:51this place to call home. Yes, excellent.
- 3:53Happy to be here. Awesome, yeah.
- 3:55Let's get on the boat. Yeah, I'll let you guys get on
- 3:59and then I'll untie us and push us off.
- 4:01So. Where you're going to sit on the
- 4:03blue pad. OK, facing in which direction?
- 4:05Wherever. Which?
- 4:06Wherever. It's we're just, we're just
- 4:10friends hanging out on the boat. Just on the boat, yeah.
- 4:13I'm like, I'm like, which direction?
- 4:14She's going to have the camera, so.
- 4:16I'm going to go back to you. Can you put that back into the
- 4:22middle and I'll put it in the? Big box.
- 4:30There. She goes again.
- 4:34Don't know the rest of the lyrics.
- 4:38I'm just, I just, I just have the whole I'm on a boat thing
- 4:41right now. I'm on a boat.
- 4:42I'm on a boat thing. You're on a boat.
- 4:44I'm on a boat. I mean.
- 4:46Do you, Do you, have you rafted? Not since being here now, so
- 4:50this. Is, but you rafted.
- 4:52Before, yeah, rafted before the 1st.
- 4:54And so I've also had one of my students that trains with me.
- 4:57He's a raft guide. So he runs a gearboat, OK.
- 4:59And with like some of the other Outfitters, because he's always
- 5:01like, hey, let's go and do this. Like I don't have time.
- 5:03He's going to be so jealous when you find out that you went with
- 5:06girls. Friends be like what the hell,
- 5:08I'm like I want to let. Out your Rogue River virginity
- 5:10to us. Sorry, Brian.
- 5:14Sorry, Brian. Sorry, Brian.
- 5:16It's alright. It'll be fun.
- 5:18It's going to be great. This isn't truly I don't.
- 5:20I mean the Rogue River is the whole thing of the Rogue River
- 5:23is like a a true highlight of our area and like all of the
- 5:27Rogue River is beautiful and amazing.
- 5:29But I have to say this is not like Rafty, like we're on a raft
- 5:36and we're we're floating, but like the real good rafting is
- 5:39down down Yonder. Wow.
- 5:41Yeah. We're just floating today.
- 5:43We're not really rafting. We're out for a cruise, Yeah.
- 5:46We're out for a cruise. Little leisurely boating
- 5:48experience. Yeah, we're just on a no splash.
- 5:52You like where I put my cup. I do look at where I put my cup.
- 5:57I'm going to crawl between you guys.
- 6:03Very glamorous. It's so exciting.
- 6:05I'm excited to be on the river today.
- 6:07I am the same. I used to do a New Year's Day
- 6:13float every year for like 8 or 9 years.
- 6:20I know, Where's my? Phone and I've stopped doing
- 6:22that and so this is my first day on the river this year also.
- 6:29Yeah, I mean, what a great way to start it out.
- 6:35Doesn't it just feel so good to feel the water move under you
- 6:41and. Move along.
- 6:42There's already a sense of calling.
- 6:44It's so pretty to the the clouds and the sky and the no fog.
- 6:50Holy moly. We're getting all of our
- 6:51pictures in, guys. Yeah, before we have to start
- 6:54talking. Before we have to really get
- 6:56into it. Just like take it in.
- 6:59Take it. All in.
- 7:03The first song I listened to in the car this morning on my way
- 7:06to work was Get Low. So I'm like my mind's in a
- 7:09little dirty of a. Turn it up and get Ratchet.
- 7:13Yeah, yes, yes. Then she pulled up to me playing
- 7:16Pimp Juice. OK, yeah, that was the only. 1.
- 7:23I've been on this Spanish guitar kick, so yeah, nice and mellow.
- 7:28Very more aesthetic. Yeah, nice, nice and mellow.
- 7:32Well, though I will have to say so, I went to conditioning class
- 7:36on Friday morning. Did we did turn up a little bit.
- 7:39We're like stretching in like happy baby pose and my neck, my
- 7:44back starts playing and it's me and three guys.
- 7:48Yes, little Missy Elliot, Yeah. Like it's a good thing we're all
- 7:53of appropriate age and there's some rapport here, because
- 7:56otherwise this could be supremely awkward.
- 7:58It's yeah, luckily we were all adults and we we all grew up in
- 8:02that same era. Yeah.
- 8:04You know, so it's. Yeah, how old are you?
- 8:06Me, I am 39 going on 40 this year.
- 8:08Oh, same with my husband. Yeah, 39 going on 40 and I still
- 8:13don't know. Do you have anything planned for
- 8:15your 40th? For 40th?
- 8:16Not yet. When's your birthday?
- 8:17October 1st. We got time.
- 8:20Yeah, October 1st is. Invited since we're new besties.
- 8:24We just became best friends. Yeah.
- 8:27Especially if your son starts to train.
- 8:28Well, I won't actually train. I've been feeling called.
- 8:32I just don't have the time. We were talking about that.
- 8:35Do we have the time? Are we making the time?
- 8:39Clock. It time is a construct and
- 8:42you're in charge of your life. I mean, like I said in the car,
- 8:45having children and a spouse is a little different in time
- 8:49management, but still, you get to decide how to spend your
- 8:54time. That's so true.
- 8:56I know. Well, I'm doing, I'm feeling and
- 8:58I'm feeling I have a new career that I'm doing.
- 9:01So it's like I'm trying to piece it together, especially now
- 9:05starting podcast Mondays and and we do a little bit on
- 9:08Wednesdays. So I'm just trying to get into
- 9:10the my flow state with routine and schedule.
- 9:12Got to get the schedule. Down got to get the schedule
- 9:14dialed that way you. Can figure it out like what
- 9:17works here, what works there. Yeah, I also am feeling called
- 9:21to start like a little like hiking club.
- 9:24Nice. So yeah, we'll see where things
- 9:26land. I.
- 9:27Mean I'm thinking it easy. That's one of the things for
- 9:29being here. You can go ahead and do all
- 9:32those outdoor adventures and make it to where it's just you
- 9:37get to be able to have your work and your play too.
- 9:39And then if you can have your work as play, it's even better.
- 9:44Yeah, I have to say, like, how long have you been doing martial
- 9:48arts? Martial arts.
- 9:49Oh, sorry, no continued martial arts for me.
- 9:53He's been lifelong. I started karate before and then
- 9:56I was at the local boys and Girls Club from, you know, 4 to
- 9:596. And the karate instructor at
- 10:01that time disappeared. And then so shortly after a
- 10:06wrestling coach came up and that man, my, my youth wrestling
- 10:10coach pretty much shaped the majority of my life and being
- 10:13able to like help drive and direct me of like being a good
- 10:17human, what a good coach looks like, what a mentor looks like.
- 10:22And so from six all the way through high school, I was able
- 10:26to wrestle. And then right after high
- 10:28school, I started, I fell in love with the sport of boxing
- 10:31and I said screw wrestling and started boxing.
- 10:37And like my dad put me into a men's club.
- 10:39So I had grown men that were like 3540 years old.
- 10:42And I was like, you know, 1718 years old at the time.
- 10:46And I was getting beat up by those guys.
- 10:48But I loved every second of it, you know, And so I just kept
- 10:51doing that. And then back home in Ventura,
- 10:55there's an MMA gym that opened up when I was like, 20 years old
- 10:59and I had four months of experience, and I had my first
- 11:05professional mixed martial arts site.
- 11:06Oh my God, yeah. Well, the reason why I asked you
- 11:09is because you look like somebody that like you have the
- 11:13quintessential face and look of somebody that does martial arts.
- 11:17So I'm like more like UFC fighting.
- 11:20Like I could see you up on this in the you.
- 11:23Can't see it, but the ears are a little mangled, so yeah, you.
- 11:26Definitely look like a fighter. I get the hey, you look like
- 11:30Conor McGregor, a little bit like Conor McGregor like that.
- 11:34The hey, you look like TJ Dillashad.
- 11:36I'm like, yeah, I get that a lot.
- 11:38And there was another guy that his name was Jason Miller and
- 11:41they're like, you look like him too.
- 11:42And I'm actually trained with that guy or side by side look
- 11:44like we could be brothers, you know.
- 11:46So it was. So I get that you look like so
- 11:48and so a lot. And the fact that, you know, I
- 11:50did do a season of The Ultimate Fighter at one point in time.
- 11:55And so I you know, you're, you're like observation of me
- 12:00being like, yeah, you look like 1, you know, because I was or am
- 12:03or because you are in a past, in a past experience.
- 12:06Yeah, yeah. For.
- 12:07Sure, that's funny. We're going to keep this
- 12:10conversation going in just a second, but I have to pause here
- 12:13because what Jesse is talking about, that personal
- 12:16transformation through martial arts, that's exactly what SOMA
- 12:19Academy is built on. If you're in Southern Oregon and
- 12:22something in this conversation is already stirring something in
- 12:25you, then this is your sign. Go wildly.
- 12:27Listeners get 2 weeks completely free at SOMA Academy in Grants
- 12:31Pass, no experience needed. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing,
- 12:37Muay Thai for adults and kids. Just mention Go wildly when you
- 12:41reach out. Then stay for the six month
- 12:43training plan and see what this does for your life.
- 12:46southernoregonmartialarts.com. OK, Jesse, keep going.
- 12:52Oh, Emily, I do have to say I need a glove.
- 12:55OK. Do you have any extras?
- 12:57Yeah, that's the one thing I did forget.
- 12:59Look at somebody's loincloth is up on the.
- 13:02There's a tent back there and. Some we need to come do a robe
- 13:06ribbon clean up up here. Yeah, I have to say, being this
- 13:09close to the water, I when I was waiting for Emily up at
- 13:13Schroeder, I was, I was being this close to the water.
- 13:15I'm looking, I'm going. That whole thought of like if I
- 13:17was a fish, I'd be right there. As a fish, I'd be right there.
- 13:19I'm just going, Daniel, it's twofold.
- 13:21Jesse, do you want gloves? I'm OK for now, thank you
- 13:24though. Hey, go, Heather.
- 13:26Thank you. That's one of those things
- 13:27because the cold hurts my hands and my ears the most.
- 13:32Yes, you know. Yeah.
- 13:33So I keep. I'll put them in my pocket to
- 13:34give it a little reprieve. I got gloves, I got socks, I got
- 13:38hats, I got neck warmers, I got waterproof pants.
- 13:41You're you're all part of the six piece, right?
- 13:43Yeah. I even saw hand warmers in
- 13:46there. Yep, I got hand warmers.
- 13:47I might need one of those. Put it inside the gloves.
- 13:49I got blankets. Yes, you brought blankets.
- 13:52I got tarp my dirty. I have hot, lightly flavored
- 13:58water. Hot, lightly flavored water.
- 14:01You mean like, like a faux tea? Yeah, yeah.
- 14:04It's faux tea. I almost got.
- 14:08I almost brought some bone broth, like the dissolvable bone
- 14:12broth I'm so into right now. It's so good.
- 14:15I I like the beef more than the chicken.
- 14:17The chicken has a funny smell and flavor, but the beef is
- 14:21where it's at. Beef's a little saltier, denser.
- 14:24No, no, it just has better flavor that chicken.
- 14:28I don't know. It has like this like wet dog
- 14:30flavor to it. Sometimes things taste like wet
- 14:33dog to me and I can't. I just can't.
- 14:35I'm like what? Yeah, I've had this, this I for
- 14:39papaya. It tastes like dirty socks to
- 14:40me. Yeah.
- 14:41Yeah, there's certain foods just like that.
- 14:43Yeah. When I eat tomatoes with onion,
- 14:45with onions, for whatever reason it taints that like the onion
- 14:49taints the tomato. So like if they're in a salad
- 14:52together cannot do it. They have to be set.
- 14:55Like I can't eat them in the same dish unless it has vinegar
- 14:59with it and it's like more like a Greek summer salad then I can
- 15:02handle it. But if it's just plain, it does.
- 15:05Like the onion does something weird with the tomato in my
- 15:07mouth, it fornicates with it in my mouth and I can't.
- 15:10It tastes like gross. Well, that's fascinating.
- 15:18Let's dive into. Don't eat tomatoes and onions
- 15:20fornicating in a mouth together, no.
- 15:24Jesse, tell us a little bit more focused in on who you are, where
- 15:29you came from, and how you ended up getting into martial arts and
- 15:35into spending time outside. OK.
- 15:38Or here in Southern Oregon. Yeah.
- 15:39And then, yeah, what, what really led you to Southern
- 15:42Oregon and. Obviously, you know, like we
- 15:45were, we've said before, I'm coming from Southern California,
- 15:48Ventura, CA. I grew up on the beach, you
- 15:52know, so that that beach lifestyle, going to the beach,
- 15:55surfing, body boarding, boogie boarding, you know, obviously
- 16:01skateboarding, any of those board sports, that's something
- 16:03that I grew up doing. So it's just like I was already
- 16:07drawn to being outdoors because like I grew up at the time where
- 16:11it's like my dad's like, Hey, I need you to be home by by the
- 16:15time the streetlights turn on. If you don't, if you don't find
- 16:17the phone and be able to call me like the four cell phones were a
- 16:20thing, you know, when everybody had landlines.
- 16:23Beepers. Beepers, pagers, yes, the pagers
- 16:25you had to have like the little the code you let you let people
- 16:28know where you're going to be. But yeah, so I grew up around
- 16:31there so it was already outdoors as it was.
- 16:34I didn't like to spend too much time indoors, didn't play video
- 16:37games, you know, and just like that lifestyle was always so
- 16:43much fun. And growing up with my dad, like
- 16:46we always go fishing like that was what we would do, you know,
- 16:49And our local lake, Lake Casitas was one of the best fishing
- 16:51lakes in new Western United States for for years until the
- 16:57city started to grow. And because a lot of the city's
- 17:00main water came from that lake. And so as city, the city grew,
- 17:06the water levels were depleted. And So what was a great fishing
- 17:10lake turned into, you know, it was a pool or a pool, It was a
- 17:13pond. And so all the really large, you
- 17:16know, the really big largemouth bass, like that went away.
- 17:19And so the fishing went away. Then as I got older and doing my
- 17:22own thing, like we weren't just hanging out as much, but it was
- 17:24like that was something that was very passionate and I grew up
- 17:27doing with my dad and sharing with him.
- 17:30And so that was like a really core memory when I was growing
- 17:35up as a child was always being outside at the lake, going
- 17:38fishing, getting up in the morning, playing hooky from
- 17:40school, being able to go and do that and.
- 17:44So that's the key to a good life.
- 17:45Play hooky from school. Play hooky from.
- 17:47School, you know, and get outside and enjoy life, you
- 17:52know. It's simple.
- 17:54It's simple. Yeah.
- 17:57But yeah, it's just growing up in that growing up outside was
- 18:01something that I enjoyed because any time that I was indoors.
- 18:04Great Blue Heron. Great Blue.
- 18:06Heron just chilling. That's a great fissure, but
- 18:10sorry to interrupt. I saw it and I wanted to clock.
- 18:12It something shiny like ADD. Yeah, always in forever.
- 18:17Yeah, same. Yeah.
- 18:20And. Now they're trying to get back
- 18:22to where we're going, but. Fishing.
- 18:24Fishing, fishing, fishing, fishing.
- 18:26Going. Up outside.
- 18:27Outside, but like that was something that like go outside
- 18:31camping, hiking, like that was something that I enjoyed doing.
- 18:36But being in Southern California, being in a city, it
- 18:38was wasn't something that I got to do all the time, you know,
- 18:42But so for me to be able to like go out and camp, that was like a
- 18:46privilege. You know, in order to go camping
- 18:48anywhere, whether that wasn't the lake, we'd have to drive a
- 18:51few hours to be able to get outside and do that.
- 18:54And so the only time I ever go camping or go anything out in
- 18:57the like far away the wilder's house, going with my
- 18:59grandmother, you know, she would take me.
- 19:01So my grandmother, they'd go and take me.
- 19:03Like she was like growing up, she was the core experience of
- 19:06like going to the mountains and going skiing, going
- 19:08snowboarding, you know, taking me.
- 19:10And she had a cabin in, in Mammoth when I was growing up.
- 19:12So she would Take Me Out there. That ass grandma, Yeah.
- 19:15Grandma. Grandma's rat.
- 19:16She, she was a gene. Grab a gene.
- 19:19Yeah, grab a gene. But yeah, she has since passed
- 19:23away. But like, she left a legacy for,
- 19:26you know, left a huge legacy for me to be able to be like,
- 19:29there's enjoyment, you know, she was a very caring woman, loved
- 19:33animal. She was like an ASASPCA donator
- 19:37and always would like, go spend time at animal shelters and do
- 19:41all that. So she was just like, she was
- 19:43tiny, but she had a lot of love. I love that.
- 19:47So that like that introduction to being able to go snowboarding
- 19:51and skiing with my grandmother, that was one of those things.
- 19:55I was like, damn, I really love this.
- 19:57You know, I really like the mountains.
- 19:58It's just, it's just it's fun. It's like that whole John Muir
- 20:02thing is the mountains are calling and I need the answer.
- 20:04You know, it's like that was it? And so as I got older, you know,
- 20:11I started to, you know, I had like my own, my own
- 20:13transportation and, and being able to get outside, like I
- 20:16started to do the whole camping on my own, going camping with
- 20:19friends and, and being able to do that.
- 20:22And so I had like grew this love for it and like, it was until
- 20:28like 2018 to where I was really like, you know what, this is
- 20:31something that I need to do, you know, And so it was, it was
- 20:35getting out and like, I mean, I'm going to go, I'm going to
- 20:39travel to here. I'm go to Joshua Tree.
- 20:40I'm going to spend the night in the desert, you know, go hang
- 20:43out there or I'm going to go up to a Big Bear and go find a
- 20:46campsite that's outside and go to Big Bear and do that.
- 20:48And, you know, I was starting to do that.
- 20:50And then I remember when, like Kovid hit, that's when it really
- 20:55took off because it's like, well, I don't have anything to
- 20:56do, you know, I'm going to go jump around outside and outfit
- 21:00in my truck and got the whole Outlander thing or the
- 21:02overlander thing going on. Did you lose a job?
- 21:05What were you doing employment wise that like allowed you to to
- 21:11go off and? I was building hot rods, yeah.
- 21:14I. Was building yeah, so before
- 21:16before I came up here. So like I was so probably from
- 21:202000 and 2010 is when I really started teaching jiu jitsu.
- 21:30That's why I really started teaching jiu jitsu because I
- 21:32started doing jiu jitsu in 2007, two thousand and 8:00-ish.
- 21:37And that's when I really started teaching in 2010 and then about
- 21:412000 and 12, 2011, 2012 was when I started building hot rods yeah
- 21:49and so like I grew up in my dad's motorcycle shop.
- 21:52We had a motorcycle shop and so that was like he was colorblind.
- 21:56So he was like, hey, what color is this?
- 21:57I'm like red, What color is that green?
- 21:58What color is that brown? OK, that goes there, that goes
- 22:01there, that goes there. Like I knew more about wiring
- 22:04than most people did. You know, I was five years old
- 22:06and I was helping them wire motorcycles and I knew more
- 22:09about nuts and bolts, like thread pitch and diameter and
- 22:13all that than most adults did at that time too.
- 22:15And then he had free child labor from me.
- 22:17I'm still going to get you back, dad.
- 22:19So free child labor of him being like, I'm three years old having
- 22:22the sweepest, like 3500 square foot shot.
- 22:25Oh my. God.
- 22:26So, so that was just something that I grew into.
- 22:30And so I started to build hot rods before I moved up here.
- 22:32And that's what I was doing Southern California.
- 22:34And, you know, I had AI, worked at a really cool shop, had my
- 22:38own business, won many awards doing that.
- 22:42Yeah. Like cars that go to Grand
- 22:43National Roadster show so. What's your?
- 22:45Favorite car? Favorite car?
- 22:50And what favorite car you built? Yeah, let's do that.
- 22:52Shit. The one you're most proud of.
- 22:571966 Lincoln Continental convertible 1966 Continental
- 23:03convertible. That's classy.
- 23:05Yeah. I, it was like 2425 at the time
- 23:09when I built that thing. And there is just that was a
- 23:12full on. The car showed up, the guy
- 23:14dropped it off. He owned a an oil field, an oil
- 23:19field, like what's like a coating company.
- 23:22So he would coat pipes and all that.
- 23:24So he had he had he had a bunch of money.
- 23:26And so he showed up with this like ragtag beat up, like 66
- 23:30Continental, little suicide doors and beautiful car.
- 23:33But when it showed up, it was like Dodger blue had some like
- 23:36really chintzy rims on it. And he's like, I want to do, I
- 23:39want airbags, I want this, I want that.
- 23:41And like completely ripped that thing apart and restored it.
- 23:44And, you know, he took it to a few shows and won a bunch of
- 23:47awards. And it was just, I spent so much
- 23:50time on like aligning the gaps on that thing.
- 23:55I spent so much time like learning about like how they did
- 23:59the convertible systems in 1966 because it was all off
- 24:02hydraulics. It wasn't really electronics too
- 24:04much involved. And so there was a lot of time
- 24:06that went into it. And that was probably one of my
- 24:08favorite cars, yes. That's.
- 24:09Cool. Yeah, that's.
- 24:10So cool. So 66.
- 24:11We're back to getting up here, Covad happened.
- 24:18So I mean, there's before like moving, making that change to
- 24:22move up here. Like when I was 13, my older
- 24:25brother, he moved up here. So I have an older brother
- 24:28that's lived up here for about 25 years, Okay.
- 24:30Cool. What brought him up here?
- 24:32Just there he was. He was like 21 at the time and
- 24:37his girlfriend at the time got pregnant and they were living in
- 24:40Southern California and his girlfriend's mom lived up here
- 24:44and like rent down there at that time.
- 24:46Rent down there at that time was like like $1300 for a place.
- 24:50So her parent, her parents were. Up here, her parents, it's
- 24:52always something. Yeah, you know, some connect
- 24:55some family usually or. So my, my brother moved up here
- 25:00when I was young and then, so when they had my first niece, my
- 25:06mom, my mom and I drove up here, drove up here and was able to
- 25:10like, visit. And they lived out in Cave
- 25:12Junction at the time. And 20, yeah, I think about 25
- 25:14years ago, Cave Junction was like, not much.
- 25:17Yeah, not much. Not much more than than the not
- 25:19much it is now it's, I mean, it's a beautiful, wonderful
- 25:24place. Nothing.
- 25:26A little rough. A little rough, yeah.
- 25:29It's still a beautiful place. Still it's.
- 25:31Still very beautiful, yeah? The environment Spectacular.
- 25:35Yeah, but so he moved up here and we just like driving
- 25:38through, you know, driving through this.
- 25:41I'm like, wow. It was like the first time I was
- 25:43actually in the forest, driving through in the forest.
- 25:46And I remember my brother taking us out, like taking me out and
- 25:50going off roading and, you know, going to the river and hanging
- 25:53out and like having, yeah, going out to the illies and, you know,
- 25:57and, and experiencing that. And so that was like, wow.
- 26:00So when I, you know, we go back to we go back to Southern
- 26:03California. Like that place was so cool, you
- 26:05know, And then we would come up and visit.
- 26:07My mom and I would come up and visit, come up and visit.
- 26:09And like every time I come up and visit felt like there's
- 26:11piece of me that was stay here that was cool.
- 26:14Like the first time going to the Oregon National caves, you know,
- 26:18that was rad. I'm like, see, it was, I've
- 26:20never been in a cave before like that.
- 26:23And so there was a lot of firsts for experiences and it was there
- 26:28was just something that would just call me back, call me back.
- 26:30And that was like leading up to it.
- 26:33And you know, it's like, you know, all the way through COVID,
- 26:36still going out and camping and really going like traveling the
- 26:40entire the western United States with a, with a, my ex partner
- 26:44and you know, going Texas, Washington, Colorado, Arizona,
- 26:49Utah, like all those places and like really checking out
- 26:52national parks and finding the way off the way off the beaten
- 26:55path places away from people where you don't hear anything
- 26:58and, and doing that. And so that was like, really, I
- 27:02was like, Dang, there's a calling for it.
- 27:04I need to be away from people, you know, knowing that the
- 27:07further I got away from people, the closer I got to myself.
- 27:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's just something that like
- 27:14in that silence, silence of nature and just like being out
- 27:19there just brought peace, brings that that stillness, that calm
- 27:24to you and. It didn't scare you because
- 27:27there's there's a lot of people out there who I think are afraid
- 27:31of that quiet. They're afraid of finding the
- 27:33quiet space within themselves and being away from the noise.
- 27:36They need the noise or they think they need the noise to
- 27:39thrive or just that's all they know.
- 27:42That's what's familiar, and they avoid finding themselves in
- 27:47quiet. I think we, I think people are
- 27:49just been like kind of conditioned to being in that
- 27:55chaos, you know, and that's what they're, they're used to.
- 27:58And until you start to remove yourself from that and, and put
- 28:02yourself in those, those situations or those, those
- 28:06places to where you don't have any of the distractions and you
- 28:09don't have the chaos. It's like you really get to know
- 28:12yourself, you know, Because I think we've, we as humans have
- 28:15gone so far away from like our primal needs or so far away from
- 28:21like where we need to be in nature.
- 28:23Like it's, we've become so disconnected.
- 28:27And that's for me, anytime that I start to feel that where I'm
- 28:30like feeling this uneasy feeling or I start to feel anxiety, just
- 28:34just going outside and standing in the sun, you know, even if
- 28:38I'm still just outside my backyard or something like I
- 28:40just going outside and standing in the sun helps.
- 28:42But if I can get outside something like this, it helps
- 28:45ground me. You know, if you can get your
- 28:46feet wet, get your feet dirty, get your hands dirty, something
- 28:49that way, like it's just it brings you back and it kind of
- 28:53helps, gives you a sense of calm.
- 28:55And that's what, like, outdoors for me are being, you know,
- 28:58going on a hike, going standing on the riverbank and go fishing
- 29:01or even be out in the ocean. Like, that's just it.
- 29:05It's settling miles away from everybody else.
- 29:09It's just it's comfort. Yeah.
- 29:12You know. Just you and you and your
- 29:15natural self. Yes, absolutely.
- 29:21But if we're going to backtrack and talk about like what?
- 29:25Finally brought me up here in January of 24.
- 29:30Like there was just like, you know, there's a lot of things
- 29:34happening in my life of like not really being happy building cars
- 29:38anymore, you know, absolutely loved it.
- 29:41But like when it was a hobby turned into a career and then it
- 29:45wasn't fun anymore, I wanted to remove like, it just didn't feel
- 29:48good, you know, like I enjoyed it, it was fun, but just it
- 29:52didn't align with what I was wanting anymore.
- 29:55You know, what I really wanted to do was change people, like
- 29:58change people's lives, impact them through like martial arts.
- 30:02And for me to be able to do that, I couldn't do that back
- 30:04home because it was so saturated.
- 30:06There was, you know, I didn't want to compete with my
- 30:08professor or the person that I grew up doing jiu jitsu with.
- 30:11I could have easily opened like an affiliate, an affiliation of
- 30:14his school, but I wanted to do it my way.
- 30:17I, I saw a different path, you know, and there's nothing wrong
- 30:21with what he did, what he was doing, but it was incredibly,
- 30:23he's incredibly successful, but there was just some things that
- 30:26I wanted to do differently. And so I couldn't do it there.
- 30:31You know, I ended a long term relationship with a partner and
- 30:37I just got tired of like that hustle and bustle, that hustle
- 30:41culture. Making sure I'm keeping you guys
- 30:48dry, I appreciate. That I knew that's what you're
- 30:50doing. Don't.
- 30:52I don't want any surprise splashes, so.
- 30:56So it was just, it was one of those things I got tired of
- 30:58hustle culture. I got tired of the pricing of
- 31:01everything in Southern California.
- 31:04And so I had, I had a buddy that was feeling the same way and he
- 31:10moved up here and when I was like, where are you moving to?
- 31:13And he told me where he was moving.
- 31:15And I was like, Oh, my brother lives right outside of that
- 31:17because he moved up here to Selma.
- 31:18Oh, cool. You know, and I was like, Oh, my
- 31:20butt. My, my brother lives in Grants
- 31:21Pass. And he's like, oh, and then
- 31:23after all this stuff took in place and transpired, I was
- 31:26like, you know what? I'm done, you know, I'm done.
- 31:30I was like, I sold, I sold my hot rod, you know, I got rid of
- 31:34everything that I didn't need. I minimized everything.
- 31:37Everything that I kept was just what I wanted to keep.
- 31:41I didn't need that. There was a bunch of stuff that
- 31:42I didn't need. It's just the things that I was
- 31:44like that was important to me, you know, and got rid of
- 31:47everything else. So that felt really good.
- 31:48It just like shed that weight and I moved up here.
- 31:53I just said screw it, I'm going to do it.
- 31:54I set a date. It wasn't like one of those
- 31:56things where like I'm going to do it this day.
- 31:58There's I set a date. That was my exit date.
- 32:01I said bye to all my friends that I would, all my students
- 32:03that I had down there, all my friends.
- 32:05Like massive going away party. That was fun.
- 32:12Had a massive going away party. And then like 2 days later I had
- 32:16everything in EU Haul. My dad helped me move up here.
- 32:19And yeah, I just immersed myself in outdoors.
- 32:23I spent the first six months hiking, fishing, crawling around
- 32:27in the woods. I started, you know, I, I picked
- 32:30up a bow, started out with a, you know, archery and, you know,
- 32:34getting crawling out in the woods and trying to archery hunt
- 32:36and, and learning to do that. So I put that that right there
- 32:39kind of resembles a martial arts for me.
- 32:40So that's something else that I like, being outdoors, being here
- 32:45that I picked up, learned a new style of fishing and just like
- 32:50traveled all over Southern Oregon.
- 32:51Next, you can try mountain biking.
- 32:54You know what? So I grew up, I grew up so I
- 32:56grew up racing BMX. I grew up racing BMX as well.
- 32:58I did that and I, I get dumb enough with four wheels
- 33:03underneath me. I don't need 2 wheels you know
- 33:07and I've already have you know and I can't for me for what I do
- 33:11on the daily for teaching jiu Jitsu and and and the boxing and
- 33:14the Muay Thai like. You can't risk an injury I.
- 33:16Can't risk getting hurt, you know, then I can then then
- 33:19because it Emily knows it's like she's come to classes.
- 33:22I'm, I'm like the sole coach, you know, So it's like I, I
- 33:25don't. Have to go that hard, you end up
- 33:29going hard. I know myself like I, I have to,
- 33:33I, I, I really have to refrain from doing stupid stuff.
- 33:36Oh my God, that looks I could do that.
- 33:38Like I remember I'm pushing forward and I don't heal the
- 33:41same as 20. You know, right, Saying like the
- 33:43same thing people are like, why don't you fight anymore?
- 33:45I'm like 40. I remember when I was like a 20
- 33:49and I don't want to fight the 20 year old version of me because
- 33:51now they're just, they're crazier.
- 33:55But so yeah, that was that that jump here was just, I was done
- 33:59and immersed myself. And yeah, so I, I stayed out
- 34:04there with that buddy with that that buddy for six months.
- 34:07But I just got to the point where even I like, I just, I was
- 34:10on vacation, right? You'd have to start to do
- 34:13something at a point, at a point I was like, you know, so then I
- 34:16got a job at Toyota here as one. Yeah, I got a job at Toyota here
- 34:20and I was, I was one of their technicians.
- 34:22I walked in there, gave my resume and they like pretty much
- 34:25hired me on the spot. They just saw like everything.
- 34:27And the, the service advisor, he like looked at me and he goes,
- 34:32he looked like an MMA fighter. Like I was like, yeah, you can
- 34:36kind of tell. He's like, yeah, I can just tell
- 34:37because I my son, he was a wrestler.
- 34:39So your ears are a little messed up and it's like.
- 34:42Thanks. Yeah, cool.
- 34:44Profiling. Nice.
- 34:45Compliment. Yeah.
- 34:46All right. So they pretty much hired me on
- 34:48the spot and I worked there for a year and some change.
- 34:53But for it was, it was more as a tool to be able to buy my house
- 35:00up here and meet people, stay busy, be able to, you know,
- 35:06subsidized me, me spending money and not blowing my savings and
- 35:10all of that. So it was, that was, it wasn't
- 35:13up for longevity, you know? Stepping stone.
- 35:17Means to an end. Yeah, it was a means to an end.
- 35:19And for me, yeah, emphasis on end, huge end.
- 35:25But it got to the point where I was working there and when I was
- 35:28talking about like alignment, the, the morals and ethics there
- 35:32did not align with who I was as a person and how I did things
- 35:37when I was running a business or how I did things when I was
- 35:40working on cars or building cars.
- 35:42So that did not align me whatsoever.
- 35:44And I had a lot of disagreements with people there.
- 35:51And I was always a squeaky wheeled, like that's a little
- 35:55little suspect. I don't think that's safe.
- 35:57I don't think that's you should be doing that.
- 35:59It's not ethical. Definitely not.
- 36:02And I don't really care if they hear this.
- 36:05My husbands best friend worked at Toyota for many years and he
- 36:10said similar, similar things and he had he he left or what
- 36:14happened was he wanted to leave and then they gave him a raise
- 36:16and then the next week he came in and they let him go.
- 36:19It was Luke. Luke Conrad.
- 36:20Oh, I know Luke. Yeah, I actually like Luke.
- 36:22So that. OK, so I'm sure he spent a lot
- 36:24of time at the bike store. Yeah, yeah, because he was.
- 36:26Yeah, he. I actually like Luke.
- 36:27And then I can just tell like when he was.
- 36:29You can see, you can see it like.
- 36:32Luke's so intelligent too. It's like.
- 36:34I know that he was getting rubbed there.
- 36:37You can tell when he was, when he was upset, you know, But The
- 36:40thing is, he wore it on his face.
- 36:41I was the same way. Yeah, but everybody in there
- 36:44was, they were deathly afraid of me, you know, they were like,
- 36:49oh, shit, Jesse's pissed off. Like, I'm like, but I'm one of
- 36:51the nicest people. Like seriously, I don't, I don't
- 36:54want to fight. I don't want to get, you know,
- 36:56like, just because I'm capable of extreme violence doesn't mean
- 36:59I'm going to reason like. Just as I can kill you with one
- 37:02touch. Yeah, it's like one of my, one
- 37:08of my coaches, he's like, man, if you're going to learn to hurt
- 37:10as much as you do, you got to learn to heal as much as you do.
- 37:13And that was something that has stuck with me ever since I heard
- 37:17that because I, I, I have learned to hurt, you know, But
- 37:21through that hurt, I've also learned to heal.
- 37:23And not just like ex, you know, externally, but internally as
- 37:27well. That's something that martial
- 37:28arts has provided me is that internal healing.
- 37:31And I think I was telling you about it like I got to a certain
- 37:33point where I was fighting and it just, I didn't feel like I
- 37:38had to fight anymore because I wasn't fighting other people
- 37:41with most of the time that I was fighting.
- 37:42I was fighting something inside of me, you know, and.
- 37:46Did you figure out what that was?
- 37:48Yeah, about childhood trauma. I had a huge amount of childhood
- 37:53trauma. There was like resentment
- 37:54because like my life was super hard and I didn't get like the
- 37:57same, the the same opportunities as other kids did or, you know,
- 38:02growing up poor or, you know, like living in hotels and all
- 38:08this other stuff that I went through in my life.
- 38:10Like it that shaped me for who I am sitting here now like that.
- 38:15It's it's there. There was a lot of trauma that I
- 38:19was carrying that like I got to like exert through through
- 38:24extreme violence, which is, which is this sounds really bad.
- 38:28And it could, it could totally put like paint a bad picture of
- 38:31somebody. But like, for me, that was
- 38:33healing. Yeah, I was able to get it out.
- 38:35Anger needs a place to go. That's what my son needs.
- 38:37My son's really angry. That's why I'm like really
- 38:39excited that he's in. Like he wants to do jujitsu.
- 38:42Yes, he did the wrestling club too beautiful and he did great.
- 38:46But I'm just saying like I'm hoping that he really gets into
- 38:50it and like I would love for him to get obsessed with it because
- 38:53he needs to put his emotion somewhere.
- 38:57Right. Yeah, we can't.
- 38:58We can't keep them inside of us. Yeah, they will.
- 39:02It'll be like a volcano. And that's why I think that's
- 39:05what that was going on, you know, and so for me to be able
- 39:08to have that outlet and do that it.
- 39:12In a Safeway. In a Safeway, yeah, it was it.
- 39:14I mean safe ish. Control controlled violence.
- 39:18Yeah, controlled. But it was, you know, that was,
- 39:21it was something beautiful about it.
- 39:23And you know, for me, for me to be able to do that, it was, you
- 39:27know, they'd have those experiences and like share those
- 39:30with other other people during that time.
- 39:32Like that was just, that was something that was incredible,
- 39:36incredibly healing. Sure, let's put a pause just
- 39:39while the search. Your motor goes by.
- 39:43Search and res. We can go by them faster than
- 39:46they're going to go by us. Hi.
- 40:01Their job doesn't suck when they're just out running fun
- 40:04patrols. They just run back and forth on
- 40:07different stretches of river for like hours.
- 40:12We've seen them other days that we've put in on different
- 40:14stretches. They're just going back and
- 40:15forth and back and forth and back and forth.
- 40:17Yeah. I'm like, are they just doing
- 40:19like training or are they just maybe?
- 40:22Yes. I'm both, yeah, probably a
- 40:24little bit of everything. So they're like, man, you know?
- 40:27They're, they're on my list of people to reach out to, to get
- 40:29on the pod because I want to know more about their, their
- 40:32training protocols and, and just what it's like to do water
- 40:36search and rescue on the river. Yeah.
- 40:39They're probably just getting to know the river, like, so when
- 40:41people are like, oh, they put wit, you know, we got to look
- 40:43for somebody at this spot. They're like, I know exactly
- 40:45where that's at. Yeah, at different water levels
- 40:48and different access points. How how it's flowing?
- 40:51It's like, that was one of the things for like when I would go
- 40:55fish and the lake would get so low, my dad and I would go out
- 40:58and we'd scout and we'd take pictures of structure and where
- 41:00it would be and like flat spots. And then when it would actually
- 41:03start to raise back up, we'd be like, we're going to go fish
- 41:06there, you know? So it's like, sorry, they could
- 41:08potentially be doing the same thing.
- 41:09Like, OK, there's huge rocks there.
- 41:11If like if something were to happen there could be a stop
- 41:14there for body or I don't. Know, yeah, they're looking for
- 41:17strainers, they're looking for logs in the river, they're
- 41:21looking for rocks. Looking at how things shifted
- 41:25flow at different levels. Put your faces in the sun.
- 41:28I I. Yes.
- 41:31Oh, for a moment. OK, so yeah, so you were you
- 41:37were fighting off demons in a safe, controlled way.
- 41:42Yes. And and moving that anger
- 41:44through your body and then you found a point where just it just
- 41:50went away or. Yeah, that's what it was just
- 41:52one of those things where you just.
- 41:53Like you embraced them. I, I embraced them.
- 41:55I, I, I figured out like what it was.
- 42:01Oh my gosh. Social.
- 42:02Yes. Heather has a great sunglasses
- 42:04collection. I have, I have two pairs of
- 42:07sunglasses. I have one that I would normally
- 42:09wear if I'm driving and then I have other ones where I'd be
- 42:11wearing like just cut the glare off the water.
- 42:16Shout out to Costa. All right to Costa, Costa.
- 42:20Oh, OK. Because we're Heather and I are
- 42:23wearing matching Costco fleeces. So we're we did a Costco
- 42:26Costco's. Were rad.
- 42:29Some of my favorite pairs of pants that I have from Costco.
- 42:31Yep, I think that the pants I'm wearing are from Costco and my
- 42:35boots are from Costco. Yeah, they're Pendleton boots
- 42:39from Costco. Score, right.
- 42:41Score. Yeah, yes.
- 42:43But yeah, so like that was just going back to like, if I've
- 42:46learned to hurt, I have to learn to heal.
- 42:47And through what I was doing in the martial arts, I've learned
- 42:50to heal. There's a part of me that was
- 42:51healing that I found, you know, for me to be able to like share
- 42:55that with somebody and be able to share that what I was able to
- 42:59get from it. That was like my, the whole
- 43:03meaning behind, you know, opening the school, you know,
- 43:06being able to do that. And that's like I was saying, I
- 43:09moved up here because I wanted to open a school.
- 43:13I wanted to be able to be that that systemic change that was
- 43:17going to ripple outwards, to be able to like create the change
- 43:20in the community that I wanted to see.
- 43:22And that you got to experience yourself.
- 43:25Yes, that I experienced. I'm just like, I'm just a
- 43:32chronic mic adjuster. All right, maybe it's hopefully
- 43:35it sounds better. Well, yeah, just so that it's
- 43:37pointed at you. Instead of me going away from it
- 43:40makes sense. But yeah, I wanted to be able to
- 43:44give that back to a community. And like, I'm like this from
- 43:50coming over, coming up here over the years, I can see that this
- 43:54place is in need. You know, this place is in need
- 43:57of that because there's there's young kids around here that just
- 44:00they look lost. You know, they're they're
- 44:02definitely lost. Like you're saying, your son has
- 44:04a lot of anger, you know, and there's he's not the only one,
- 44:09you know, and so there's. And the outlets that they have,
- 44:13like other sports, soccer or baseball, like it's a different
- 44:18kind of, it's not really self-expression.
- 44:22No, there's, there's, you know, that self-expression you talk
- 44:26of, There's like that's the, the arts part of martial arts.
- 44:29You know, you get to be creative, you get to problem
- 44:31solve, you know, you get to like build a foundation of your own
- 44:37through that to like really develop your own, your own
- 44:43personality. And you can express that through
- 44:46martial arts. And to be able to have that like
- 44:50it for me, I can, I can, I can say it's like living proof, you
- 44:53know, because I was a total piece of shit.
- 44:56Like, you know, like at like 1820 years old, I wasn't, you
- 45:02know, definitely wasn't the person that's sitting here, you
- 45:05know, and that's just being able to have that outlet has been
- 45:09able to create that change within myself.
- 45:10And it's like I can share that with somebody else.
- 45:12And if I can just do one person, I've done my job.
- 45:16But if I can do it on a grand scale, which I'm working for
- 45:18right now, then it's, it's, it's even better, you know, And so
- 45:22it's like there's even more than that that I have planned in the
- 45:25future. That's, you know, like
- 45:27especially in the near future that I want to do besides just
- 45:30having my martial arts Academy, you know, I'm like wanting to do
- 45:35like retreats like Jiu Jitsu retreats that are like martial
- 45:37arts Incorporated, but have like outdoors, like rafting, mountain
- 45:41biking, archery, hiking, camping, tenderfoot retreats for
- 45:45people that have just been inside cities and inside locked
- 45:48doors in front of their computer for most of their lives that
- 45:50have never even like learned how to start a fire.
- 45:52You know, be able to get them outdoors and be like, hey, teach
- 45:55them some basic survival skills and be like, hey, go figure it
- 45:57out for a night. Go build some structure.
- 46:00Go build some. Go build some, you know,
- 46:04structure like a little Fort. Go build a Fort.
- 46:09Yes, Yeah, there we go. The.
- 46:10Formal word, yeah. Go build a Fort.
- 46:12Go Fort. Go build a Fort.
- 46:14Who do you, who do you think you'd be now if you hadn't found
- 46:17martial arts? Like, where do you?
- 46:20Where do you think you'd be in life?
- 46:22Have you ever kind of looked back on?
- 46:25That well, in all honesty, I'd I'd probably end up dead.
- 46:29Seriously. I've there's, you know, there's
- 46:32a lot of times I was partying a lot, you know, there was
- 46:35definitely drug addiction, you know, and like Full disclosure,
- 46:39like I, I was on a path to self destruction and like it just
- 46:46wasn't a pre look, it wasn't a good look.
- 46:49It was, I mean, it's 100% raw and vulnerable, but like.
- 46:53That's what we go for here. Yeah, 100.
- 46:55Percent raw and vulnerable, but it's just like if I didn't have
- 46:59this as an outlet or martial arts as an outlet or even like
- 47:02being outside or outdoors as an outlet, then I I'd probably
- 47:08probably be dead, you know? Yeah, yeah, it's I can see your
- 47:13lip ring scar. Oh yeah, there's, there was,
- 47:19there was definitely a, a, a cry for trying to find my, my
- 47:23individualism in my, my mid teenage years.
- 47:27There was like, they're actually all the way across, you know,
- 47:30and you know, like I told you, there's different colored hair,
- 47:32you know, like raves and partying.
- 47:35And it was just, you know, that was all fun and all experience
- 47:38and I wouldn't change any of it. But like, I don't want to say it
- 47:42was wasted, but it could have been redirected in a different
- 47:45manner. But then again, like, I wouldn't
- 47:48be the person that I am today if I didn't experience that.
- 47:51Yeah, I needed that. And through the martial arts
- 47:54I've been able to. Harness the.
- 47:56Harness. Yeah, exactly.
- 47:57Harness and and and change that. My question is, what was that
- 48:02like? What got you?
- 48:04Because if you were like partying and kind of deep in a
- 48:06hole of in in a sense, what kind of sparked your even want or
- 48:10need to get like get going with martial arts?
- 48:14Like what was what was that like turning point that was like, I'm
- 48:19going to go to this class today. It was like, like after high
- 48:23school, that was like partying and getting in trouble, getting
- 48:26in street fights and all that. That's when my dad put me in
- 48:29that like men's club, who introduced me to that men's club
- 48:31and that's was that. And then I was like.
- 48:33He saw a propensity to fight and said I can do something with
- 48:37this. It felt good and it was
- 48:39everybody else saying that I can do something with it.
- 48:41It was just something that felt good for me in the moment.
- 48:43It was one of those it was like indulgence at that time.
- 48:47I'm like, oh, I love this. I can fight and this gives me
- 48:49that another endorphin or another dopamine release.
- 48:52You know, I'm like, oh, I can do this, chase that.
- 48:54And and I didn't know why I was chasing all of that and doing
- 48:58the things that I was doing and making the decisions I was
- 49:00making. It was because like, I didn't
- 49:02understand what was going on internally, you know?
- 49:06And it was that moment of when you're looking like that moment
- 49:11of clarity, it was like, like, it was just like that first time
- 49:18going into the gym and being accepted by other people with
- 49:22other people that had very similar trauma as I did.
- 49:25They were fighting for something.
- 49:26And that's one of those things that I think about like
- 49:28everybody's a fighter. You know, some people do it
- 49:31physically, some people do it get up every day and have to go
- 49:33to work every day. But everybody has that ability
- 49:36to fight. But like you have to choose what
- 49:39you're fighting for, who you're fighting for.
- 49:40You have to choose your why, you know, And so it's like everybody
- 49:43has that ability. But like, we see it off more
- 49:46often than not. Like people are just so
- 49:48complacent and being able to be like, kick your feet up and want
- 49:52to just turn the like turn the channel.
- 49:54And that's they're like, they're they're complacent.
- 49:56That's how they live. And I think, you know, if that
- 50:00that's OK, if that's what you want to do, but like there's so
- 50:05much more to life than just complacency because that that
- 50:08kills. I'm not waiting to die, you
- 50:10know, and I just, I want a better life.
- 50:16I'd see more for myself. I have seen more for myself.
- 50:20And I know the direction that I'm heading is it's, it's a,
- 50:27it's the right path, it's the right way, you know, because if
- 50:31I think about like the opposite, the opposite ends of the
- 50:34spectrum of where I was at and where I'm at now, like that's no
- 50:38longer. OK, cute dramatic cut here.
- 50:42This episode is brought to you by Dead Camera Batteries.
- 50:46May we always have a few more in our backpacks.
- 50:50Enjoy. If Jesse's story how's your

- 51:20Over the edge of the boat and just like lay there and just
- 51:24watch the rocks float by. Sorry guys, we just had a
- 51:27battery break. We switched out a battery real
- 51:30quick and we're back on Remember Your Spot.
- 51:36I don't, even though it's a fast battery.
- 51:39Sorry, I don't remember my spot. You're talking to a blonde like
- 51:42it runs deep. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:44No offense to other blondes out there, but it runs.
- 51:46Deep, both of you? Yeah.
- 51:48My blonde, really blonde sometimes.
- 51:50It was something about something about your life changing and not
- 51:56being who you were. Yeah, the the, the the opposite
- 51:59ends of like where I was at in my life to where that change
- 52:03created to where I'm at now. Like going through that
- 52:06transition was definitely rocky. And there was still, you know,
- 52:10I, I was still had faults and I still made bad decisions.
- 52:14But there just came to a point during that process that I got
- 52:21tired of the look of disappointment in people's eyes
- 52:24when they looked at me because everybody's like, hey, you're so
- 52:27talented. You have so much to offer.
- 52:28You're you're so good at what you do.
- 52:31And I'm just like, there wasn't any self belief in that.
- 52:35And then finally I just got tired of that.
- 52:37And it was just like, there was something that just like went
- 52:40off in the switch and it was just, you know what?
- 52:42I don't need to do that anymore. I, I am a good person, You know,
- 52:47that whole thought of like, I am, you know, I am great, I am
- 52:51successful, I am worthy, I am deserving.
- 52:54Like that whole mentality shift was something that I, that
- 52:58experience that I went through and I was just like, I don't
- 53:01need to continue to live a hellish life and made that
- 53:06change for myself. Choosing to affirm yourself.
- 53:08Yeah, exactly. Choosing to affirm myself and
- 53:11choosing and choosing to love myself more than anything.
- 53:14And that's where that that's when I was like, oh, and then it
- 53:17was just like, it was almost night and day, you know, night
- 53:20and day. And it's like, you know, we
- 53:21still struggle with that. You know, we still have those
- 53:23moments where we're like, self doubt creeps in a little bit and
- 53:26you're like, oh shit. It's a practice.
- 53:28Sorry to interrupt guys. Epic tree house.
- 53:30Notice that Epic. Tree house.
- 53:32Yeah, there's a viral there's like 3 or 4 pretty epic tree
- 53:35houses along the town stretch. There's a whole, I remember when
- 53:39I was looking for my house, there was a whole like tree
- 53:42house commune type thing that was for sale in Cave Junction.
- 53:47There are like 6 different tree houses.
- 53:49I'm like wow, this is rad. Because you know like moving
- 53:52forward I want to my next step while being up here is I want, I
- 53:55want a piece of land that I could throw yurts on and like a
- 53:59big warehouse. So that way I could do like the
- 54:01jiu jitsu retreats. Oh, I know somebody that can
- 54:03help you find that. I think I've had a slight talk
- 54:06with her already. Yeah, I've had a minor talk with
- 54:10her. But yeah, so I mean, like we've
- 54:12had this, I've had this whole transformation process and it's
- 54:15like, you know, I I don't want to make this whole thing just
- 54:18about like martial arts and, and all of this, it's like.
- 54:22Well-rounded. Situation.
- 54:23Yeah. So it's like we, we, you know,
- 54:25we come back to this whole like this, this healing process and
- 54:30you know, yes, martial arts is a very huge aspect for it for me,
- 54:35very like one of the main vehicles that has helped drive
- 54:39that change in me. But like, this is also another
- 54:42one where I find peace. We talk about that stillness or
- 54:45that calming or that grounding sense like this is being
- 54:49outdoors, being on the river next to the river on a mountain
- 54:53miles away from everybody. It's like now we're talking
- 54:56about we're talking about that silence and getting away from
- 54:58the chaos before is like enjoyment.
- 55:00But I couldn't, couldn't quite get to escape that loudness in
- 55:05my head, right, You know, And now I'm out of.
- 55:08That like negative self talk and doubt and.
- 55:11Yeah, or that turning things off of being like, oh, I got this to
- 55:15do and I have taxes or I have to pay this bill or, you know, all
- 55:19like the just the adult stuff too.
- 55:21And besides the negative self talk and all that, just like
- 55:23compiled together. And I couldn't sit with that.
- 55:27So I didn't go out doors as much, you know, but it was
- 55:30something that I'm passionate for.
- 55:31But now, like, I welcome that because I can sit there and
- 55:36remove myself from the conversations I'm having in my
- 55:39head and actually like process those.
- 55:42I think they call it like metacognition or something like
- 55:44that, or omnipresence, something that I can't remember.
- 55:47It was one of those two words. But you can sit there and
- 55:51actually sit with your thoughts and critically and objectively
- 55:58like have a conversation with yourself about what's going on
- 56:01in your head and have that presence of mind to be able to
- 56:05like, OK, why? Why am I thinking this way?
- 56:07You know? And so as I've learned to do
- 56:09that, like I'm OK with being outdoors.
- 56:12I want to, I, I welcome it because it's like now I get to
- 56:15be outside. If I'm trying to process
- 56:17something, I go outside, put a fishing pole in my hand, put the
- 56:20hiking boots on or whatever and just go disappear for a few
- 56:23hours and disconnect, you know? Disconnect to reconnect.
- 56:26Exactly. That's it's.
- 56:29I know people just don't like you got to disconnect to
- 56:31reconnect. It's such AI feel like the
- 56:33outdoors is like a puzzle piece to like, you know, the nature is
- 56:37a nature should be a puzzle piece in everybody's life
- 56:40because of that what you just said, like for me just rounding
- 56:45it all in like. Sorry.
- 56:47The puzzle I'm like in here puzzle piece like for me, I've
- 56:52been being I've been I mean, I'm out here quite frequently, but
- 56:59the martial arts have has been calling my name for my anger
- 57:03release because I battle with anger and I'm like, Oh, I feel
- 57:07like that would be such a good outlet for my anger because it's
- 57:10not really something that nature.
- 57:13It doesn't click that box like I think that would.
- 57:18Does that make sense? Yeah, I, when I was in Portugal,
- 57:21I was trying to express some anger and I was by myself and
- 57:27all I could think to do was hit a tree with a stick.
- 57:32And like then the stick broke and I was like, but I still, I
- 57:35still have something I need to get out and I don't have a way
- 57:39to get it out. And like, running hasn't done it
- 57:42for me, weightlifting hasn't done it for me, yoga hasn't done
- 57:46it for me and rafting hasn't done it for me.
- 57:49Those are all like very peace and slow driven.
- 57:55And I mean, I've only been going to your studio for like 2-3
- 58:01weeks. But already I can feel a shift
- 58:03in me in how I'm holding on to things that I've felt a lot of
- 58:09anger around for a long time and I've had no control over and
- 58:13have otherwise been telling myself I just have to like let
- 58:16it go. But I don't have a way to just
- 58:18let it go. Journaling about it doesn't
- 58:20help. Breathing about it doesn't help.
- 58:22Like I needed a physical expression to And I love I'm
- 58:28somatically move it through. And SOMA is the acronym of your
- 58:33business. And whoa, it's all coming
- 58:34together. Right.
- 58:36And isn't it a serendipitous thing to where you're feeling
- 58:38like you're like, I need this outlet.
- 58:40No, hi, I'm here. It's your sign.
- 58:43And I literally, I just walked by one day and saw your sign and
- 58:47was like, that's what I need. That's that's what's been
- 58:50missing and in my physical expressions.
- 58:55And I was really afraid of it for a long time.
- 58:57Like I was honestly really afraid of like getting hit in
- 59:00the face and. I have that fear.
- 59:02Now I've been getting gently hit in the face and it's fine.
- 59:05Yeah, it's. As long as my glasses are off
- 59:07it's fine. Yeah, I just make sure, you
- 59:09know, obviously you've come and then you can see, you know, that
- 59:11it's safe. It's a safe place.
- 59:13There's no I can I weeded out anybody that has ego or anger or
- 59:20we have checked that at the door really quickly to make sure that
- 59:25this is, you know, that it's a safe space for people, because
- 59:29that is one of that's like one of my main concerns when it
- 59:35comes to that is making sure that people want to come back.
- 59:43You know, and if it's like, if you have a bad experience that
- 59:47and you don't want to come back and it's like you don't get the
- 59:50chance to like release whatever it is that you're there for,
- 59:56because everybody that's that everybody that's there,
- 59:58everybody that's in in in my studio in the Academy that like
- 1:00:03I got to go back to that whole thing.
- 1:00:04Everybody's a fighter, but it's like everybody's there fighting
- 1:00:07for something different, whether they're fighting to lose weight,
- 1:00:11fighting for self-confidence. Fighting their trauma like
- 1:00:16everybody has their own personal fight.
- 1:00:18And I want to make sure that like when people are there that
- 1:00:21they get to express themselves to the point to where they, they
- 1:00:26have that outlet and they they get what they want out of it.
- 1:00:30They get what they're searching for, you know, and, and, and
- 1:00:34like, here's the you're, you're spot on.
- 1:00:36When you hit it, you're like, it's somatic therapy, you know,
- 1:00:39like there's somatic dance there.
- 1:00:41You know, there's like you said, there's yoga, there's all this
- 1:00:44other stuff that you do, but there's just something that is
- 1:00:46so do we. Are we stuck?
- 1:00:50No. We're surfing.
- 1:00:52Oh, surfing. I miss surfing, but there's just
- 1:00:56something about being able to move your body and hit and punch
- 1:01:02and kick and choke and all of that that is choke.
- 1:01:06And choke and get choked. And get choked and have that
- 1:01:10healing aspect about it. And it's just it's it's so free
- 1:01:16and releasing, you know, and I you know, people are like, I
- 1:01:20don't want to just sound like I'm drinking.
- 1:01:21I'm making people drink the Kool-aid or it's pulty, but like
- 1:01:25it's when people actually get a chance to do it and they and
- 1:01:27they and they're actually like freely allow themselves to do
- 1:01:32it. And then it it's the healing,
- 1:01:35the healing process, the the healing capabilities of these,
- 1:01:38you know, that is all that is all part of it.
- 1:01:40That's a by product and it's just.
- 1:01:43It's pretty easy to buy into after like 1 positive experience
- 1:01:48that feels safe and supportive and inclusive and nobody is
- 1:01:53looking at you funny, nobody's laughing at you, nobody's
- 1:01:55judging you. Everybody's like hey how you
- 1:01:58doing? Thanks for being here.
- 1:01:59Yes. Cool.
- 1:02:01Yeah, it's and, and that's what I talk about.
- 1:02:05Like when when I talk about culture too, we're having a
- 1:02:07conversation before we started. That culture is something that
- 1:02:11is very big for me. That's something that I learned
- 1:02:14is like when you walk through the doors of of a place like a
- 1:02:19martial arts Academy, it's already nerve wracking as it is.
- 1:02:22It's. So.
- 1:02:23Intimidating. It's very intimidating.
- 1:02:25So when you walk through those doors, it's like, oh shit, like
- 1:02:29it. What is this going to be like,
- 1:02:32You know, and nine times out of 10, I know everybody's names
- 1:02:34before they even walk through the door.
- 1:02:36And I'm like, hey, what's going on, Emily?
- 1:02:37And you're like. Oh, you remember.
- 1:02:39Yeah, I remember. And and that's, that's that's
- 1:02:41huge for me is like, I want to know people's names.
- 1:02:43I want to get to know them personally because it's like if
- 1:02:47I can build a relationship with people that this, that that
- 1:02:50helps me as an instructor to be able to, to achieve their goals,
- 1:02:55to be able to achieve whatever it is that they're looking for.
- 1:02:57And so it's like you have to be a personable person.
- 1:02:59Like it's not just like, OK, now I have the money, I'm going to
- 1:03:02teach a class. All right, have a good day.
- 1:03:03No, it's like this is this is a healing for people.
- 1:03:07Yeah, that's exactly just that. That is exactly why I like what
- 1:03:13I'm bringing into real estate. Actually.
- 1:03:16It's like I want to make that personal connection with
- 1:03:18somebody. I don't just want to run them
- 1:03:21through the system and oh, OK, well, have a nice day.
- 1:03:24Like you got your place and I'm off on my way.
- 1:03:27It's like, no, like you're coming, you're, you're invited,
- 1:03:31like. We're friends now.
- 1:03:32Yeah, yeah, You, we, you're helping somebody move forward in
- 1:03:36their dream, somebody move forward in their life.
- 1:03:38But I feel like towards their own self actualization but.
- 1:03:41You have to make a personal connection with somebody so you
- 1:03:44really understand. I don't know.
- 1:03:46That's just what my experience has been already.
- 1:03:48Like I said, it's new, but like to really know what place is
- 1:03:53going to resonate like I've I've had to get to know people on a
- 1:03:57deeper level truly to know. Do I need to be, I don't know,
- 1:04:02more an advocate for them in this certain aspect or do they
- 1:04:05need me to walk through? I don't know.
- 1:04:08It's just that resonates so highly with like career and like
- 1:04:11what a great marketing. I mean, it's not, it's your
- 1:04:16authentic self and I feel like it's my authentic self too.
- 1:04:19But through that comes this like natural form of marketing for
- 1:04:23your business that you're creating.
- 1:04:24And you know, no, we're podcasting.
- 1:04:29So I guess we're casting something.
- 1:04:31Yeah, we're not casting rods, we're casting.
- 1:04:34Pods. Pods.
- 1:04:37We're not casting rods, we're casting pods.
- 1:04:40Hilarious. No, no.
- 1:04:43Haven't even seen any jump. Yeah, darn.
- 1:04:47Yeah. You too.
- 1:04:50Have a good one, he said. OK, he's happy.
- 1:04:54He's he's so happy. You know, he's got a rod in his
- 1:04:56hand. He's standing on this beautiful
- 1:04:57day it. Doesn't matter if he catches
- 1:04:59anything, he's out here. That that that old time saying,
- 1:05:02you know, bad day of fishing is a better than a good day at
- 1:05:05work. Yeah, you know that's real.
- 1:05:07They call, they call it fishing, not catching.
- 1:05:09Yeah. I mean, I've had plenty of
- 1:05:11trips, you know, where I said it's been nothing but catching,
- 1:05:14and then I've had plenty of trips where it's nothing but
- 1:05:16fishing and it's still just as good as catching.
- 1:05:18Yeah, you know. You're still outside.
- 1:05:20You're still in fresh air. You're still quiet.
- 1:05:23But yeah, you go back to that marketing thing.
- 1:05:25It's just like, if you're a good person, yeah, if you're a good
- 1:05:27person, you you're, you're going.
- 1:05:30To be successful. Yeah, your integrity is.
- 1:05:33Authentically going about life you could be successful yes and
- 1:05:36you're. You're leading with integrity of
- 1:05:38honesty and honesty with yourself, honesty with the
- 1:05:41people around you. You're you're reliable and
- 1:05:45dependable. You do what you say you're going
- 1:05:46to do that's. Huge.
- 1:05:47That's the integral part. I was, I was raised around some
- 1:05:51really, some really good men that like with you, your
- 1:05:55integrity is what matters the most.
- 1:05:57So you're going to say what you're going to do or you do
- 1:06:00what you're going to say. You you do what you say.
- 1:06:04Yes. There we go.
- 1:06:05Both all of the above. All of it D but like if you say
- 1:06:09you're going to do something, you're going to tell some people
- 1:06:11that you're going to do it, go do it because that's that's that
- 1:06:15you know that that's that differentiates the walkers and
- 1:06:17the talkers. You know, you got to walk your
- 1:06:19you got to walk your walk. You're going to talk your talk.
- 1:06:21Like which one's it going to be? And, you know, that was just
- 1:06:25something that's always been part of my life is like, if I
- 1:06:27say I'm going to do something, I'm doing it.
- 1:06:29You know, it's like, it's just, that's just it.
- 1:06:33But like, so for me to be where I'm at now and have people come
- 1:06:37through the doors just like Emily, just like you're gonna
- 1:06:40do. Yes, yes.
- 1:06:43So I'm like, I'm called like this is an alignment.
- 1:06:46This whole situation I'm like I need to well it was all
- 1:06:49alignment like meeting Victor or not meeting Victor.
- 1:06:51But knowing Victor. But knowing Victor and he
- 1:06:53brought it up, Emily just brought it up.
- 1:06:55And I told Victor I was like, oh, my, my best, one of my best
- 1:06:57friends just started going like, oh, another sign.
- 1:06:59I need to get going on it. And I saw Victor this morning
- 1:07:01too, because he's trying to bring his son.
- 1:07:03And it was, it was so cool. I haven't told B this yet, but
- 1:07:07when I came into class last week or whatever, and B was there,
- 1:07:09she was the second person that I met who like inspired me to
- 1:07:14join. And I met her one time at a
- 1:07:16mutual friend's birthday brunch. She told me that she did Muy
- 1:07:20Thai. And I was like you, you
- 1:07:24gorgeous, petite young woman, do Muay Thai.
- 1:07:27I've thought about this. If you if you can do it, I can
- 1:07:31totally do it. Just just wait until you come to
- 1:07:34our self-defense program. On, on.
- 1:07:36Yeah, I'm so excited. Yeah.
- 1:07:38You're, you're, you're going to meet, you're going to meet an
- 1:07:40incredible human who runs that whole thing, you know, and she's
- 1:07:44a world champion. Like she's a badass.
- 1:07:47Yeah, yeah, I have been following her on Instagram for a
- 1:07:49little while since since Grapple Town opened.
- 1:07:51And so, yeah, I'm. Yeah, she's very.
- 1:07:54Excited. Very incredible person.
- 1:07:57So yeah, just wait till you, you, you want to talk about
- 1:07:59inspiration and being like, wait, you really?
- 1:08:02Even though yeah, she's a badass.
- 1:08:03Yeah, yeah. So that is, that is apparent
- 1:08:06for. Sure, but he's just just like
- 1:08:09all this into alignment and and then I was just like I'm like
- 1:08:12now I'm outside now I'm like, well shit, you know, it's been a
- 1:08:17while since I've actually been able to go outside just because
- 1:08:19of opening the Academy. I was telling him like I haven't
- 1:08:21fished in like 6 months. Oh, I feel that too.
- 1:08:24Yeah, that little yeah. Like I'm fished in six months I
- 1:08:26haven't done, you know, the things that like when I'm doing
- 1:08:29these things, it makes me feel more like me.
- 1:08:32And, you know, I've gotten away from that just because of, you
- 1:08:35know, like you got. Hustle for a minute.
- 1:08:36You got to put in the work for a minute, yes.
- 1:08:39And then you can kind of try to, you know, get your schedule
- 1:08:41dialed back in and put put those things that you love back in.
- 1:08:44That's what we were talking about this morning is, you know,
- 1:08:46I, I need to make the time you need to make whether it's an
- 1:08:49hour or a whole day of doing it. And it's just that, making the
- 1:08:54time to be able to get outside just so that way I can listen to
- 1:08:57the loud thoughts again. Because even if it's, even if it
- 1:09:00is just an hour, the amount of time that you get back in
- 1:09:04yourself and in your regulated nervous system is multiplied.
- 1:09:09You go, you go do that for an hour, but then it feels like you
- 1:09:12have five more hours in your day to do all the other things that
- 1:09:15you feel like you need to do. Oh yeah, I have.
- 1:09:17And I still have AI, still have a laundry list of things that I
- 1:09:20need to do after I get done with this.
- 1:09:22But like I'm like, yes, this is this is so like when you're
- 1:09:25like, you want to do this? Like hell yes, yeah, let's do
- 1:09:28this. Because all those things,
- 1:09:29they're going to feel easier. You're not going to feel as
- 1:09:31rushed to do them, even if you feel like, well, you technically
- 1:09:35have less time on the clock to get them done moving at a more
- 1:09:40relaxed, accepting, joyful pace of doing them.
- 1:09:44It's like, oh, I get to do these things because I got to do that.
- 1:09:47Yes. And it's not, it's not a has to
- 1:09:50do anymore even like it is. But it's also an opportunity.
- 1:09:53It's a privilege that I get to do these things because I get to
- 1:09:56live this badass life. This life is a privilege, you
- 1:10:00know, and all the adversity that I have faced is a privilege
- 1:10:04because, yeah, adversity is a privilege.
- 1:10:06And people don't ever take themselves out of their comfort
- 1:10:09zone and face that I'm never going to know what it's like to
- 1:10:13really live. Yeah.
- 1:10:14And that was moving up here, was taking myself completely out of
- 1:10:19my comfort zone. I left everything that I knew,
- 1:10:22you know, left everything that I knew.
- 1:10:23Friends, family, neighborhoods, restaurants, like everything
- 1:10:30that I knew it was. It's all back.
- 1:10:31Even the version of you that was there.
- 1:10:34Most importantly, the version of me that was left there and came
- 1:10:38here. For a statue up there, yeah.
- 1:10:41Yeah, I was looking at the same. Thing I was like, yeah, this is.
- 1:10:45Really. They've.
- 1:10:46Got bears, They've got bears. They've got a wolf.
- 1:10:48They're somewhere. I don't know if it's this house
- 1:10:50or if it's downstream, but they have like a log with raccoons
- 1:10:53climbing up it. That's pretty cute.
- 1:10:55But the where was I at? But I forgot what I was saying
- 1:11:01sheet leaving all. Those things.
- 1:11:03Behind. Yeah, it's all right.
- 1:11:05Like I said, the blonde runs blonde deep, you know?
- 1:11:08But yeah, leaving all that behind and coming up here and.
- 1:11:10Really. You're so blonde.
- 1:11:12Yes, yes, you were a toe head. Goodness gracious.
- 1:11:17My God is that. Derogatory.
- 1:11:19No, so I used to think it was derogatory.
- 1:11:21So it's really funny. So when I was growing up, my dad
- 1:11:24had this friend and she would come over and she'd be like, Oh
- 1:11:27my God, you're a tow head. I'm like, I didn't know what it
- 1:11:30was, right? I really didn't know what it
- 1:11:32was. I'm not a tow head.
- 1:11:33You tow truck. It's like, yeah, I'd be like,
- 1:11:37come calling her a tow truck. And I didn't know idea.
- 1:11:38My dad thought it was the funniest thing ever, you know?
- 1:11:41So I was like, yeah. So I was like, come.
- 1:11:43Back to that. Yeah, I was like 5 or 6 years
- 1:11:45old. Dude.
- 1:11:46Tow truck. That's funny.
- 1:11:47Didn't know, but yeah, every time I talk about joke about
- 1:11:51being blonde, people like, wow, you are really blonde.
- 1:11:53You are right. Yeah, my mom's really blonde
- 1:11:54too. Yeah, my mom's really blonde.
- 1:11:56I'm glad I have my mom's here because my dad's bald and I'm
- 1:11:58just like. Do you you burn really easy.
- 1:12:02I like. Colour your jacket type of bird,
- 1:12:04yeah, I mean, I mean ever since I've been up here though and
- 1:12:08getting outdoors in the summertime and go hanging out
- 1:12:10the river and and being outside like.
- 1:12:12You're conditioning. I'm conditioning, you know it
- 1:12:14just I can get AI can get a burn line.
- 1:12:19A bird line. I get a bird line.
- 1:12:22So we're getting fairly close to the end of our float.
- 1:12:24So I want to ask. We've talked, I know.
- 1:12:27Don't worry, we'll come and do this again on another day, I
- 1:12:29promise, where we don't have a time limit.
- 1:12:32OK, so we've been talking a lot about martial arts and how that
- 1:12:37has been transformative in your life.
- 1:12:39But martial arts isn't really done outside until you start
- 1:12:43your martial arts retreats, Yes. So I want to know about like a
- 1:12:47specific experience that you've had in the outdoors that changed
- 1:12:52your life, either altered the trajectory of your life or has
- 1:12:56been like that foundational core experience that has informed
- 1:13:02your life. You had a lot of outdoor
- 1:13:03experiences growing up, but was there one that stands out as
- 1:13:08like, that was the day my life changed in an outdoor sense.
- 1:13:13Oh, absolutely. So, you know, like I was, there
- 1:13:17was a really good friend of mine.
- 1:13:19He worked for Patagonia back home, you know, because
- 1:13:23Patagonia's headquarters. Yeah.
- 1:13:25And so he worked for Patagonia and we would go out and we
- 1:13:28would, you know, we would body surf and we'd go like paddle out
- 1:13:31in like 10 foot waves and, and go have these come to Jesus
- 1:13:33moments and getting wrecked, you know, held under.
- 1:13:37But there was, I was trying to, I made a plan with him, like,
- 1:13:39hey, let's go, let's go hike Mount Whitney, you know, and I
- 1:13:43was like, yeah, let's he's like, yes, let's do it, let's do it.
- 1:13:45And so, you know, got the gear for it and get everything ready
- 1:13:48to go. And like 2 weeks before he
- 1:13:51couldn't do it. He had like a scheduling
- 1:13:52conflict with his, with his kids mom and we couldn't go out and
- 1:13:57he, he couldn't come with us. And I was like, damn it, you
- 1:13:59know, I already got the ticket or the, the, the permit to do
- 1:14:02it. And I was like, no, I'm still
- 1:14:04going to do it. Like with or without anybody.
- 1:14:07I'm still going to go rush it. And I remember and I was like,
- 1:14:10you know, I was just like, because I knew I was at
- 1:14:11altitude. So I was doing training hikes
- 1:14:13and getting in shape for it and, and doing that because I
- 1:14:15approached it as like I was getting ready to fight, you
- 1:14:17know, I was getting ready for a fight.
- 1:14:19And so I remember like the, you know, I'm driving out there and
- 1:14:25I did like AI did like an acclamation hike before.
- 1:14:28So I went and did like, I went to hike to Lake Kearsarge, which
- 1:14:30was like 11,000 feet. Then I hiked to a high mountain
- 1:14:33lake, which is like brown lake in the same area.
- 1:14:35And I went and like did some fishing for, for golden trout
- 1:14:38and like did a few like a couple days of acclamation hikes.
- 1:14:41And then like when it the day that it came to do, the day that
- 1:14:46I came to do Whitney, it was, I was like, all right, I felt
- 1:14:49good, you know, And so I left it.
- 1:14:52I left a little later because I slept in, you know, so.
- 1:14:55Going to be well rested. Yeah, Well rested.
- 1:14:57I've already did like 3 really large hikes right before leading
- 1:15:00up to it. And I'm like, you know what?
- 1:15:02OK, I got this. I lived a little late.
- 1:15:04I wanted to leave at like 230, ended up leaving like 4.
- 1:15:07And then I was staying at this like bed and breakfast and the
- 1:15:09lady was like, oh, you got a late start.
- 1:15:11You know, I was like, you know, all right.
- 1:15:15And so it's like I got there, I parked and I was like, well, I
- 1:15:18really want to be able to watch the sunrise.
- 1:15:20You know, I was like, I got to get up there.
- 1:15:22And so, you know, I put my headlamp on and I started, you
- 1:15:24know, laced up the boots and started going for it.
- 1:15:27And there's just something that competitive kicked in for me.
- 1:15:31It was like I started seeing these headlamps in front of me
- 1:15:34like, oh, I got to catch that. I got to, I got to pass that
- 1:15:37person. I got to pass that person and
- 1:15:39the next thing you know, I'm jogging like I'm just sitting
- 1:15:42there jogging like, all right, I feel good, you know, And there
- 1:15:44was other guys that were on the trail that were jogging that
- 1:15:47literally just all they had was their, their camel packs and
- 1:15:50hiking or trekking poles and they were jogging.
- 1:15:52So I'm like full, I had like a 35 LB pack with me.
- 1:15:55I just took everything with me. I didn't know what I was going
- 1:15:58to be doing. You know, it was just like
- 1:16:00everything with me. So I'm sitting there jogging and
- 1:16:02I'm passing them and I'm like, they're like, what's going on
- 1:16:04that full? And so I just kept seeing these
- 1:16:08lights and I'm like, I got to pass that one, got to pass that
- 1:16:11one. And I got to the point where I
- 1:16:12was like, I was able to turn around and watch the sunrise.
- 1:16:16And then I'm like, well, you know what, let's just let's go.
- 1:16:19Like, let's see how fast I can do this.
- 1:16:21Like, let's get to the summit. Hey, you know, I'm sitting there
- 1:16:24and I'm jogging all the way up. And then there's like the 99
- 1:16:26switchbacks. And I start like slowing down on
- 1:16:29those a little bit. But I'm just powering through
- 1:16:31everything. And, you know, got up to the top
- 1:16:34and I'm sitting there like without being tired, just by
- 1:16:38myself looking down across that valley.
- 1:16:42And I'm going. I just ran to the top of Mount
- 1:16:46Whitney and like, I just just sent it, you know, and.
- 1:16:50I'm I just did that I. Just did that.
- 1:16:52I'm looking, I'm going and I sat there.
- 1:16:54I sat there for an hour just in awe and watching all these other
- 1:16:57people just walking up there like dying, you know, and I'm
- 1:17:02just, it was just like incredible moment of like peace,
- 1:17:05accomplishment, reflection and sitting there just like had my
- 1:17:10feet hanging off the edge. I'm just like just sitting there
- 1:17:13and just going wow. How many miles was that?
- 1:17:18Round trip 23 Oh my God, like 23 1/2 miles round trip.
- 1:17:22Did that make you want to run some marathons?
- 1:17:24Do any sort of running competitive?
- 1:17:27Ultra the the fact of the matter is I hate running.
- 1:17:30It hurts. It was just, it was just the
- 1:17:33competitive, the time and the place.
- 1:17:35Thing yeah, it was a time and place.
- 1:17:36I hate running, but you know, I have thought about doing ultra
- 1:17:38marathons or half iron Man's and all that and like, you know,
- 1:17:42those are, you know, those are some other objectives that are
- 1:17:45other goals I, that I've have put in front of me, you know,
- 1:17:48but like for right now, my thing is, is I this Academy built
- 1:17:52that's, that's objective #1 but I was sitting there and then my
- 1:18:00after I was like, all right, you know, it's time to go back down.
- 1:18:03And so I turned around and started to go back down and I
- 1:18:06ran it downhill, you know I ran it downhill.
- 1:18:10And so like All in all, from start to beginning, taking a
- 1:18:13break up there, getting back and taking a wrong turn, having to
- 1:18:16backtrack, I did it in 12 hours. Wow.
- 1:18:19Oh my gosh. Yeah, I did it in 12 hours.
- 1:18:22And so when I got back to my and I like, you know, had a, had a
- 1:18:25burger at the, at the, the little cat, not the cabin, but
- 1:18:29whatever restaurant they had, they had a burger, had a beer.
- 1:18:32And I took off and I went back to the bed and breakfast and the
- 1:18:36lady's like, I didn't make it, did you?
- 1:18:37I was like, yeah, here's me holding the sign.
- 1:18:39She goes, what the hell do you? I was like, I ran it.
- 1:18:42She goes, did you even enjoy it? I was like every second of it,
- 1:18:45you know, And it was one of those moments where I was
- 1:18:48thinking to myself of like, I can do hard things and it
- 1:18:55doesn't matter, like who I'm with what I'm doing.
- 1:19:03It's whatever my goals are. It's like I can do the hard
- 1:19:06things and I just have to push myself and and stay diligent
- 1:19:10and, and do it, you know, stay disciplined enough to just be
- 1:19:13like, I I can do this. You know, I didn't need my
- 1:19:15friend with me. You know, I didn't, I didn't, I
- 1:19:19met a lot of people on the trail.
- 1:19:20It's just wild to me because I never really thought about doing
- 1:19:23like the piece like Pacific Crest Trail or doing any of that
- 1:19:26stuff. But like people were on there
- 1:19:28and I was talking to them and they're like, oh, I'm dirt
- 1:19:30rabbit or I'm moon Bunny or whatever.
- 1:19:32Like I was like, yeah, trail names.
- 1:19:36I'm going OK, I'm Jesse. Like I got a time to make.
- 1:19:41I got to go jog. All right, you know, take off.
- 1:19:43But like, that was one of those pivotal moments when I, you
- 1:19:47know, being outdoors and and really, you know, that's that
- 1:19:51like that moment of like that is the one that really shaped of
- 1:19:55like, well, I need to be outside, you know, that's that's
- 1:19:58where I belong. This is what means the most to
- 1:20:00me. This is what brings me peace.
- 1:20:03This is what brings me peace. This is what brings me peace,
- 1:20:06you know, This is what brings happiness.
- 1:20:08This is what brings reflection. Because that moment of sitting
- 1:20:11on the edge of Whitney and having my, you know, feet
- 1:20:13dangling off, that's sick, you know, is that was that was it.
- 1:20:21And so now I chase that feeling, you know?
- 1:20:26Oh my gosh, shut up. I'm going through a vegan.
- 1:20:35That was. A big hole.
- 1:20:50You did so good. We're all just like.
- 1:20:57Yeah. I got a hair on my lip.
- 1:21:05This is going to be the start of our Wave Park future.
- 1:21:10Plan One of my future objectives is to have a wave park built
- 1:21:15here for white water kayaking and and stand up paddle boarding
- 1:21:19and boogie boarding and surfing and.
- 1:21:22So you like an actual like surfing way part?
- 1:21:23Yeah, yeah, yeah. Feel sign the petition, yeah.
- 1:21:28Yeah, let's do it. It's actually a guy I used to
- 1:21:31work for, knows quite a few people that do that in
- 1:21:36California. So there might be some sort of
- 1:21:39help or assistance that may bring about.
- 1:21:43Excellent. Yes, excellent.
- 1:21:44Yeah, yeah. About who you know, not what you
- 1:21:49know. Absolutely, and a little bit of
- 1:21:51both. A.
- 1:21:52Little bit of you got to know a little something about something
- 1:21:54in order to get stuff done. At least know something about
- 1:21:57yourself and. You got to know how how to use
- 1:22:01the people not use, but how to utilize the people that you
- 1:22:05know. Be able to put people in the
- 1:22:07right places, be able to direct. But yeah, that Whitney, that
- 1:22:13Whitney trip was definitely the the pivotal moment.
- 1:22:16I would say that's defining for me to.
- 1:22:20How old were you? How old was I-32 when I did
- 1:22:25that? Well, 32.
- 1:22:27Not that long ago. Not that long ago.
- 1:22:29And so now it's like now I know if I'm starting to feel anxious
- 1:22:35or I'm starting to feel like I need some sort of clarity, it's
- 1:22:38the it's get outside. Yeah.
- 1:22:41Go go, go, dangle my feet off a Cliff.
- 1:22:45Have you been up to the on Dollar Mountain?
- 1:22:48There's a nice Little Rock out Cove that is a nice feet
- 1:22:53dangling little summity thing that it's good for that out over
- 1:22:59Grants Pass and it's just a nice reflection spot, wouldn't you
- 1:23:03agree? Yes, absolutely.
- 1:23:04Usually it's one of my my reflection spot is is Bolt
- 1:23:07Mountain. I get up there Bolt.
- 1:23:09I've done Kirby Peak. Nice.
- 1:23:11I want to do Kirby. Yeah, I've heard some.
- 1:23:13Good things it was. It was a lot of fun.
- 1:23:15A lot of fun. Dollar round's a nice lookout
- 1:23:17for like, you only have an hour. Yeah, and you want to get up
- 1:23:20above. OK, Dollar.
- 1:23:21Mountain Dollar. Mountain, other mountain, you
- 1:23:23can be you, especially if you jog it.
- 1:23:25You could be at the top in like 10 minutes.
- 1:23:28And then I did. I finally did McLaughlin.
- 1:23:31Awesome. It was so cool.
- 1:23:32Yeah, we often was awesome. That was a lot of fun.
- 1:23:35Just being able to be like the highest point around this area.
- 1:23:38It was that was a cool experience.
- 1:23:40Big. Accomplishment.
- 1:23:41I haven't done that. I want to do it.
- 1:23:43So my next what I, the next, I'm going to do Whitney again, but
- 1:23:46I'm actually going to take my time, you know, actually take my
- 1:23:50time and do it and stay up there, camp there and, and take
- 1:23:57my time and not just be like, okay, I have to, I need to do
- 1:24:01this as fast as possible to prove something to myself.
- 1:24:04It's not competing with myself. Now it's let's see how slow you
- 1:24:08can take it. See how much enjoyment I get out
- 1:24:11of it? Yes, you know.
- 1:24:13There's another side of the competitiveness of you saw how
- 1:24:16fast you could do it, but let's see how slow you could do it.
- 1:24:18See how present I could do it? How leisurely.
- 1:24:21Exactly leisurely and how present I am to be able to enjoy
- 1:24:24those moments. So that's on the radar.
- 1:24:28Fuck yeah, this is this has been awesome.
- 1:24:31Jesse, thank you so much for saying yes and for being here
- 1:24:35and I feel so grateful to have only known you for a few weeks
- 1:24:39but feel like I know you pretty well now.
- 1:24:42I can call you a friend. Thank you.
- 1:24:44I appreciate that you've dropped a lot of great insight and
- 1:24:48advice and knowledge and depth. But we do have a few kind of
- 1:24:52like quick hit wrap up questions, one being top of
- 1:24:56mind, advice or insight for your younger self.
- 1:25:00Top of mind insight for my younger self is am I talking as
- 1:25:05me or just. Yeah, you.
- 1:25:09I guess so that's that's part of the question, right?
- 1:25:12Your top of mind, insight or advice for your younger self?
- 1:25:18Believe in yourself, you know, believe in yourself and believe
- 1:25:21in the direction that you're headed and don't stray from your
- 1:25:27path, you know, and listen to the older people that were
- 1:25:33around you and the advice that they were giving me.
- 1:25:38Awesome, And what is your most trusted or most used piece of
- 1:25:44outdoor gear or equipment? Always carry a headlamp.
- 1:25:48Yes. Carry a headlamp with some
- 1:25:50matches. Awesome and and advice or
- 1:25:55insight for getting outdoors in Southern Oregon.
- 1:26:00Go take a forest Rd. drive up it, see where you end up and see
- 1:26:05what type of adventures you can get yourself on and go try and
- 1:26:08find yourself and get lost. Awesome.
- 1:26:11And hold on. Let me disclaimer that let's not
- 1:26:14let's get lost, but in a Safeway.
- 1:26:16Yes, yes, all right. Yes.
- 1:26:17Metaphorically, not actually. Yes, metaphorically, not
- 1:26:20actually. Not so we have to send out
- 1:26:22search and rescue but. Yeah.
- 1:26:24Get lost in your mind. Get lost in your mind.
- 1:26:26Get lost in your thoughts. Yes, you know, yes.
- 1:26:30And when your body expires and your soul leaves this plane of
- 1:26:33existence, how do you want to be remembered?
- 1:26:36Legacy as a my legacy being remembered who I was is a great
- 1:26:41person. My integrity, the way I walked,
- 1:26:44the way I talked, what I did for the community and the the
- 1:26:50infectious personality that I have on people.
- 1:26:52So being able to like, have people be at comfort, be at
- 1:26:56peace. Absolutely, and if people want
- 1:26:59to learn more about you, get involved in SOMA.
- 1:27:02Where can they find you if you want to be found?

- 1:28:12Absolutely. Really good that's you had that

- 1:28:24not, the more I say yes nowadays, the the more people
- 1:28:27that I get to that more people that I meet, the more people
- 1:28:30that I get to experience with. And for me, like it's all about
