- 0:10anywhere in the I heart app, we're grateful that you are
- 0:13we're with you until just before 2:00 off the bench at that time
- 0:16to until 5 bottom of the hour Scott document writes for the
- 0:19athletic covers college football covers Iowa.
- 0:22We will talk to doc. I'm guessing he'll be headed to
- 0:25Pittsburgh or maybe covered on the TV, but he's been doing a
- 0:28lot of draft leading up to Thursdays event for the
- 0:32Athletic. But right now a weekly segment.
- 0:35We talked baseball with our friend Matt Snyder,
- 0:38CBSSports.com, Matt Trenton, Ken, excuse me, Thank you very
- 0:42much for coming on. I want to start with Nico
- 0:45Horner, who's having just one of those starts of the season,
- 0:48signed a big contract, does not look anything complacent. 1
- 0:53little bit. I mean, this is a guy that wants
- 0:55to go out and prove he's worth it.
- 0:56Man, what a start he is. And they're getting starts for
- 1:00getting contributions from a lot of other guys.
- 1:02Colin Ray, unbelievable. But Nico Horner, how about that
- 1:06start that he's had? And he did it again last night.
- 1:09That play at second base was unbelievable.
- 1:13Yeah, I mean, you know, the defense is gonna be there.
- 1:16How about him leading the majors in RBI when he's LED off most of
- 1:19the game? It's 21 RBI, 7 for seven stolen
- 1:23bases. You're always gonna get cerebral
- 1:26play, absolutely no negative baggage whatsoever.
- 1:30The only possible thing that you could say in a negative for him
- 1:33is that he's not a Big 10 home run hitter.
- 1:34But you know what? Every single guy can't be a home
- 1:38run hitter capable of hitting forty in a year.
- 1:41He's going to absolutely everything else and it's
- 1:44interesting that when he hit the walk off stack fly on Sunday
- 1:49sent the Mets to their 11th consecutive loss.
- 1:52There were questions after the game on whether or not the Mets
- 1:54should have intentionally walked Nico.
- 1:57I I thought that was one of the biggest no brainers in the
- 2:01world. And Carlos Mendoza said
- 2:02something like well, yeah, but then he would have just stolen
- 2:052nd and there were good hitters were coming.
- 2:07Well, first of all the the game-winning runs on third.
- 2:09Who cares what Nico does as a runner?
- 2:12Secondly, I'm not sure how many guys in the league you would
- 2:16least rather you would want up there less if you're a pitcher
- 2:20than Nico Horner because the the winning run is on 3rd.
- 2:24There are less than two outs. So this doesn't hey, you're
- 2:27scared of a home run. This isn't even you're scared of
- 2:29a hit. This isn't hey, he works great
- 2:32at bat. He might work a walk.
- 2:33This is the worst possible player that can come up to bat
- 2:37as somebody who puts it in play and is going to do something
- 2:41with the bat like hit a fly ball or it to the outfield.
- 2:44Like somebody who has great back control, who doesn't strike out
- 2:48like Nico's one of the best in baseball at doing all those
- 2:51things. That was a horrible decision.
- 2:53One guy, Ron Coomer, said as much prior to it.
- 2:57Yes, it's there are very few guys that you would say, hey,
- 3:01no, I, I would. Yeah.
- 3:03It's just man, I don't understand it.
- 3:06One guy that has not rounded into form as the rest of the
- 3:08team seems to be kind of popping, let's say a Suzuki, one
- 3:11extra base hit since he's come off the IL, didn't have a hit
- 3:14over the weekend. Got to go back to Thursday the
- 3:16last time he got a knock and it just hasn't been there.
- 3:20Is it the injury? Did he come back too soon?
- 3:22What have you seen out of the training?
- 3:24Yeah, didn't have that though. He's part of the WBC before the
- 3:27injury. It just, we know that he's got a
- 3:30lot of hot and cold stretches. That's kind of do you just want
- 3:33to chalk it up to as simple as that?
- 3:34This is one of those cold stretches.
- 3:36Pretty much, I mean, I think the timing was going to the WBC and
- 3:41not being one of the people who played and pool plays that were
- 3:45around here flying all the way over to Japan.
- 3:48Coming back his first game back, he gets hurt and then he misses
- 3:51the rest of spring training and now he comes back from injury.
- 3:55It has to be tough. And again, there are always ebbs
- 3:57and flows. We say so we we've seen the
- 3:59really, really hot, you know, last year in the first half, for
- 4:02example, we've seen the really, really cold last year in the
- 4:04first half until we got to the playoffs.
- 4:06And then in the playoffs, all of a sudden he was one of the best
- 4:09sitters on the team again. So I, I don't think that Craig
- 4:12counsel will or should do much different with him moving
- 4:16forward. And I expect that he's going to
- 4:18start hitting the ball out of the ballpark pretty soon as soon
- 4:21as tonight really. They're facing a left-hander and
- 4:23the winds blowing out. Oh, the winds blowing out,
- 4:26that's good to know for people who like to bet totals or find a
- 4:28player prop, etcetera. Good stuff.
- 4:30It was blown out over the weekend as well.
- 4:32Let's move on. I want to ask you about Dylan
- 4:34Cease because he's such an anomaly.
- 4:37He leads the major leagues in strikeouts, which is a
- 4:40fascinating that he's already up there, but yet he's A5 inning
- 4:44pitcher every single night. I mean, I'm not sure he's
- 4:47pitched into the 6th inning this year if he has a bets only once,
- 4:51but my God, this guy stuff is unbelievable.
- 4:53Yeah, the walks are probably higher than you'd like to see
- 4:57them, but he is the movement on his pitches, he is so tough to
- 5:02hit. I think it's all part of that
- 5:04package, right? Like the walk totals high, that
- 5:07strike out totals high. So that means pitch counts are
- 5:09going to pile up. It's all part of it because he's
- 5:13going to walk guys because it moves so much.
- 5:15So you have that small little window, that's strike zone.
- 5:18There's so much movement on the pitches.
- 5:19He's going to miss the strike zone a good amount of the time
- 5:22and he's also going to miss bat a good amount of time when guys.
- 5:25So you're you're just going to end up piling up huge pitch
- 5:28counts and not be able to go that deep in the game.
- 5:29Yeah, you're right. Like he's averaging just about 5
- 5:32innings per start. It's 25 2/3 inning and five
- 5:36starts. So you're getting just about 5
- 5:37inning, 45 strikeouts. SO5 innings, 9 strikeouts,
- 5:41hardly any runs allowed. That's where he is.
- 5:44And it's funny, he's on the every other year pass too. 2022
- 5:49second Cy on voting 2023 was terrible. 2024 fourth and Cy on
- 5:54voting 2025 he was terrible. This year he looks like he's
- 5:56again maybe top five. Sai young guy.
- 5:58This is just exactly who he is. I don't know if we'll ever see
- 6:02him get to 200 innings just because of what we talked about.
- 6:05He's always going to walk a lot of guys and strike out a lot of
- 6:08guys that run a ton of full counts.
- 6:11He's going to. So then he's going to run out of
- 6:13gas by the time you get to the 6th, 7th inning.
- 6:15And maybe that's part of it too. Even when he's on is that his
- 6:19pitch count totals are so high. He doesn't get exposed the third
- 6:22or even the fourth time through the order much because he's run
- 6:25out of pitches by then. Speaking of guys leading their
- 6:29respective leagues in a statistic, Mike Trout leads the
- 6:32American League and runs scored last year for him.
- 6:34Relatively healthy. Played 130 games for the first
- 6:37time since 2019. Just absolutely crazy.
- 6:42We'd always been an Angel for life.
- 6:44If he's healthy come the trade deadline, is this finally the
- 6:47time for him to say, look, it's not going to happen here, wave
- 6:50the white flag. I'm willing to move and we'll
- 6:53see Mike Trout hopefully sometime in a playoff even to
- 6:56this point in his career. I hope so.
- 6:59It'd be cool. I don't know if it's going to
- 7:02work out. For a long time, we always
- 7:04thought about Philadelphia. You know, he's a South Jersey,
- 7:07Philly fan. Thought it.
- 7:09We always thought it would be fun with Bryce Harper and Mike
- 7:11Trout together. But now the Phillies window
- 7:14might be closing. They don't look good at all and
- 7:16they're old. And to add his contract when
- 7:19he's paid through 20-30, that just wouldn't make sense for the
- 7:21Phillies. But there are teams that could
- 7:23absorb him and where it would make sense, especially when you
- 7:27have a lot of DH openings. So just before anybody even
- 7:30thinks about it, the Dodgers do not make sense here because I
- 7:34think you're going to need DH at bats available to keep him on
- 7:38the field as he gets up there in age.
- 7:39And they've got DH tied up. And so hey, Otani.
- 7:42And even if they didn't, they're they're going to people like
- 7:45Will Smith and Freddie Freeman are going to start maybe needing
- 7:47some looks at DH. So he does not make sense for
- 7:50the Dodgers at all. But he makes sense in a lot of
- 7:53other places if it comes to that.
- 7:57We don't know if he'd be open to it.
- 7:58There are a lot of years in the past.
- 7:59He seems like he's content. He doesn't want to go anywhere.
- 8:01But you never know. I mean, if they fall out of it
- 8:04again and teams show interest and the angels talk to him and
- 8:08they show interest and letting him go.
- 8:09And that's part of it too, because they're out of it almost
- 8:12every year. But they still sell some tickets
- 8:14just because of my trap. So it's if they decide that they
- 8:18want to move him and he decides that he's good to go.
- 8:21I, I, I, we'll see. I, I, I just hadn't thought of
- 8:24it before because it has seemed like it's a foregone conclusion
- 8:27that he's just going to stay put for so long.
- 8:30We'll see. I hopefully.
- 8:32I think it'd be fun to see some Trout trade rumors, especially
- 8:35if he has a monster season here at age 34.
- 8:37I love that ballpark. I'll never forget it.
- 8:39I was there in 1991 and I was blown away.
- 8:42I walked to the concession stand.
- 8:44I could have bought sushi at a baseball game.
- 8:46I thought what you're in California can, but I didn't
- 8:50try. Just who?
- 8:52Are you surprised Mendoza didn't walk the plank yesterday?
- 8:54Off day for the Mets. Here come the Twins, 11 in a
- 8:57row. This was a team that a lot of
- 8:59folks thought was going to rule the East and the National
- 9:02League. Obviously, that has not been the
- 9:04case. I mean, I don't know how you
- 9:06come back from losing 11 in a row.
- 9:08And I know it's a long season. You get $1.62.
- 9:10It's unbelievable. Are you surprised he's still
- 9:12there? A little bit, yeah.
- 9:15Like, I mean, it's not just this year either.
- 9:19Like they had a complete collapse last year.
- 9:21They had they were they were terrible.
- 9:22They had the best record in baseball on June 12th.
- 9:24And then they fell apart from terrible and they missed the
- 9:26playoffs. In a year where 83 wins from the
- 9:28Reds got the Reds into that last wild card spot.
- 9:31It wasn't like they get squeezed out by somebody who just went
- 9:33absolutely bonkers down the stretch.
- 9:35This was a full on choke job. And now to lose 11 in a row
- 9:39after the rosters been completely revamped, that looks
- 9:42like it's on David Stearns, which is to say that I'm
- 9:46surprised that Stearns isn't trying to save a little face
- 9:49here. Blame the manager and scapegoat
- 9:51him and get somebody else in there, especially.
- 9:54And I'm sorry to mix in what looks like a subtle jab here,
- 9:57Trent, but especially when it looks like this could be a
- 10:01relatively soft part of the schedule coming up.
- 10:04You've lost eleven in a row after you went on a road trip to
- 10:07the Dodgers and Cubs. Now you have a day off.
- 10:09Now you come home and the Twins, who are probably a little bit
- 10:12over their heads a little bit, then the Rockies, then the
- 10:15Nationals, then you have a road trip to the Angels and the
- 10:17Rockies. They could get hot here.
- 10:20This would have been the perfect opportunity for Stern to ask
- 10:23Carlos Mendoza. Then see the team.
- 10:25And by the way, Juan Soto looks like might return tomorrow.
- 10:29Well, that gets. Soto back, the team starts
- 10:31winning games. Now all of a sudden, hey, see,
- 10:33Carlos Mendoza was the problem. That would have been the perfect
- 10:36opportunity. So the little surprise, it just
- 10:39maybe he has a really good relationship with Mendoza and he
- 10:41really believes they're just about to turn it around and he
- 10:43can say, hey, see, we knew all along it was going to be OK.
- 10:46It just it seemed like the stars aligned, especially after he
- 10:50didn't walk Nico on Sunday and then made the comment like,
- 10:53well, yeah, then what? He would have sold second.
- 10:55Like man, everything was right there for the take.
- 10:57Yeah, That makes it look way, way worse.
- 10:59You mentioned Soto. Is there something between Soto
- 11:02and Lindor in the circles that, you know, you hang out with, you
- 11:06know, guys that follow the game on an everyday basis?
- 11:08But it sure seems like there's a lot of, I don't know,
- 11:10speculation out there that Lindor and Soto, the two most
- 11:15important pieces maybe of the everyday players, do not get
- 11:18along. I haven't seen anything of
- 11:21substance that would cause me to believe that they needed to like
- 11:25have a sit down talk or trade either one of them or anything
- 11:28like that. No, I haven't.
- 11:29And as always, I would say that winning would cure all here.
- 11:35If they all of a sudden get hot when Doors starts hitting, Toto
- 11:39comes off the aisle, everybody kind of comes together and they
- 11:42start stringing wins together, then everybody would be happy
- 11:45and joyous and everything. And look, we've seen stuff like
- 11:48you can go all the way back to the Bronx Zoo in the 70s with
- 11:51the Yankees. It doesn't matter if you're
- 11:53fighting in the locker room, as long as you're winning on the
- 11:55field. Everybody can make everything go
- 11:56away when you win. So I don't, I don't know if
- 11:59there's anything really big there.
- 12:01The Braves are the clear cut favorite right now and just a
- 12:04week ago you could have got them to win the division A + 140.
- 12:07Wish I would have jumped on that one as you're not getting that
- 12:10price anymore. Helps on the way.
- 12:12Spencer Striders, he's making a rehab start.
- 12:14It'll be his second coming back. Sean Murphy, they're going to be
- 12:17getting him back pretty soon. It's way early to say this
- 12:20thing's over, but does it feel like things?
- 12:22And finally, the Braves maybe somewhat, are healthy, though
- 12:24Hakuna took a couple of beans over the weekend as he got a
- 12:27little bit dinged up. Yeah, no, it's definitely not
- 12:31over at all. And they're the Braves are going
- 12:33to have questions to answer long term here with the rotation
- 12:37because while the rotation has been good and help is on the
- 12:40way, a Martine Perez with a 2.2 on ERA, Grant Holmes has been
- 12:45pretty good, Bryce Elder with a 1.5 O ERA.
- 12:49Give me a break, man. There's some backside coming in
- 12:52there somewhere. Like I believe in Sale, maybe we
- 12:54believe right now Lopez now that he's healthy, that's going to
- 12:57hold up, but maybe Strider helps alleviate some of the concerns
- 13:01unlike a Martine Perez backslide.
- 13:03But the rotation as is isn't going to continue to be this
- 13:07good. However, I do think the offense
- 13:09is probably going to continue to be this good and we'll see how
- 13:12Iglesias is when he comes back from this IL step with his what
- 13:16they say is a small shoulder injury, but Tyler Kinley, Dylan
- 13:19Lee have been really, really good and they've got Robert
- 13:21Suarez to hold down the 9th while Iglesias is hurt.
- 13:24So the back end of the Bolton is really, really well set up.
- 13:29The top end of the rotation you've got Sail and it looks
- 13:31like he's not going to be washed up here at age 37.
- 13:34So they just need to answer the rotation depth questions and
- 13:37everything else is really in line for this to be one of the
- 13:40best teams in baseball here. Yeah, and if they do get caught
- 13:43in the in the East, who would catch them?
- 13:44The Phillies are done. They're not good right now.
- 13:48Yeah, I. Maybe it is over.
- 13:51Maybe I shouldn't have to stop over.
- 13:54Like, I don't believe in the Marlins.
- 13:56I don't. I think the Nationals are going
- 13:57to end up being one of the worst.
- 13:58Teams to do I. Agree, and there's nothing on
- 14:02the Phillies or Mets that really inspires too much confidence.
- 14:05I do think that there's a chance the Mets could get hot, but man,
- 14:09they've dug themselves an 8 1/2 game hole.
- 14:12That's a big one. Now we've seen it go in the
- 14:15opposite direction a few years ago when the Braves ran the Mets
- 14:18down for more than that. I think it was 10 games.
- 14:21But yeah, that's a big, big hole when even if you say if the Mets
- 14:25get hot, the two teams are probably relatively even in
- 14:28talent when they're both firing at all cylinders.
- 14:31For a relatively even team to run down another team from 8 1/2
- 14:35games behind us would be pretty rare.
- 14:38In the Central, the last players placed, Brewers would be in
- 14:41first place in the American League Central, the American
- 14:43League West. They would be 1/2 game back in
- 14:46the American League East. This division right now looks
- 14:49great, but we're kind of think waiting maybe for the Cardinals
- 14:53to turn into a pumpkin. The Pirates, there's still
- 14:56plenty of people that don't believe in them.
- 14:58Even the Reds, who were a playoff team a year ago.
- 15:00Who's going to be fighting it out in the end when we flip the
- 15:03calendar into September? Who's still going to be there at
- 15:06the top of the National League Central?
- 15:08Well, I mean, the Cubs have won six in a row, so I'm feeling
- 15:11good right now. So I'll say the Cubs still have
- 15:13most talent. But you know, the rotation gets
- 15:15dinged with Kate Horton going down.
- 15:18It's it's how's Matthew Boyd going to be when he comes back?
- 15:21How's Justin Steele going to be when he eventually joins the
- 15:23rotation? That's how you can absorb that
- 15:25blow. But talent wise, the Cubs should
- 15:27be that they need they need some Bolton guys to come back to.
- 15:29There's the entire Bolton's hurt.
- 15:31It feels. I mean, it's even trickled down
- 15:33to Iowa, I believe. So many injuries throughout that
- 15:35pitching staff. I expect the Cardinals to kind
- 15:39of go away but but be one of the, I'll say probably the best
- 15:43last place team in baseball, unless maybe the AL East last
- 15:47place team. But the Brewers, I think once
- 15:52they get healthier among their position players, I mean,
- 15:55they'll need yellows back, they'll need Jackson Cheerio,
- 15:58but I expect the Brewers to continue to find ways to win.
- 16:01I think the Reds and Pirates both feel like fringe
- 16:03contenders. So I think that this is going to
- 16:05be really fun and competitive for most of the season.
- 16:08I would love to see a five team race.
- 16:10That'd be really fun. But we're do we're do some stuff
- 16:13here like the Reds are 6 and O and one run games 3 and O and
- 16:16extra innings. So there's been a lot of like
- 16:19things that have gone their way. Some of that is, hey, you're
- 16:22learning how to win, but some of that is stuff that's going to
- 16:24even itself out. Pirates, I still don't think the
- 16:28offense is going to be that great all year, but there's
- 16:30there are reasons to believe it's better and there are good
- 16:33signs on that ball club. So I'm looking forward to this
- 16:36division all year and I think top to bottom, maybe not at the
- 16:41top, but if he said like the the highest floor of any division, I
- 16:46think you have to stay is the Central now stealing?
- 16:49Obviously, you're not going to match the Dodgers in the West.
- 16:51Or the Braves. If, let's say, like the Braves
- 16:54in the East or the Yankees completely take off, the ceiling
- 16:57isn't there for anybody, including the Cubs or Brewers.
- 16:59But this is the highest floor from any division for sure.
- 17:03Yeah, I, I agree with you. I mean, Colin Ray, what what is
- 17:06what is story? He's been since he's come to the
- 17:08Cubs and he proved it again last night.
- 17:10It's unbelievable. I thought he was.
- 17:12Done it's a great he's such a great, great signing where you
- 17:16come into the spring and that guy's your 7th or 8th starter
- 17:19and he has to get sprung into action because of Horton going
- 17:22down and Boyd going down and Steel not ready yet.
- 17:24And man, he's been great. And it's not just hey, he's
- 17:28thrown into the rotation and he gives you 3 inning tier while he
- 17:30tries to stretch out. No, he's getting, he's getting
- 17:33into the middle inning tier. So yeah, actually he leads the
- 17:37Cubs in any pitch right now. How about that 24 innings?
- 17:40He leads what we got Imanaga, Taion and Cabrera in the 20
- 17:43twos, which Imanaga will pass it tonight.
- 17:45But still, a brief temporary thing is pretty pretty cool what
- 17:50he's done so far. The comments from Craig counsel
- 17:53about Otani and the advantage that is given.
- 17:56To the Council, there's other. Guys.
- 17:58Oh, absolutely. Council's the latest one that
- 18:00was talking about it as they get ready for that series coming up
- 18:02here soon. What do you look at?
- 18:04It is the complete. Nonsense.
- 18:07OK, take it away. It's a joke.
- 18:09No, that's ridiculous. Look, they don't get an extra
- 18:13spot. You don't.
- 18:14It's just that Otani's basically two players.
- 18:16He's the reason it looks like a special rule is because Shohei
- 18:20Otani is special. And the easiest way to say it is
- 18:23the Cubs are free to put Thea Suzuki in their rotation if they
- 18:26want. The Cubs are free to use Soda
- 18:29Imanaga as their everyday DH if they want that.
- 18:32You're free to, when Matthew Boyd comes back off the injured
- 18:34list, make boys your everyday DH.
- 18:36Well, I don't want to do that because he's not good enough.
- 18:38That's your answer. It's because Otani is basically
- 18:41two different players. He's an ace and he's a DH.
- 18:44Nobody else has a guy who does both.
- 18:46That's not a special rule. They have the same number of
- 18:49roster spots as everybody else. They just have a guy who's
- 18:52capable of being both in the rotation and the everyday DH.
- 18:55And this didn't start with the Dodgers.
- 18:57This was he's with the Angels as well.
- 18:59So it's. Yeah, I mean, and I don't
- 19:01understand how it's a topic right now.
- 19:03I don't, I guess. Well, John Snyder brought it up
- 19:05when the Dodgers were in Toronto and then council jumped up, I
- 19:09think. Everybody was, at least because
- 19:11that was at least because it was about the extra.
- 19:13Time thing. Oh yeah, he didn't like that
- 19:15argument there when there's. Extra time in between innings.
- 19:18There's at least an argument when you can say there's a
- 19:21different set of rules. But in terms of the roster spot,
- 19:24it's not different. It's the same for everybody
- 19:26else. If you're if you want to say
- 19:27they shouldn't be able to do that, then you're penalizing
- 19:30them for having a player that special.
- 19:32That's not the way this works. Again, put Moises by a stereos
- 19:35in the rotation. Craig.
- 19:37No, he can't do that. But that's what the Dodgers are
- 19:40doing with Otani. He can hit though, man.
- 19:42He can absolutely hit, No doubt about that.
- 19:45Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com where he covers Major League Baseball,
- 19:48CBS Sports HQ's where you can see him, you can hear him with
- 19:52Miller and Condon on a weekly basis.
- 19:53A man we grateful for that. Matt, thanks for jumping on.
- 19:56We'll talk with you next week. Appreciate it.
- 19:58As always. Thank you, Matt Snyder.
- 20:01You have a good one, you do the same.
- 20:02Matt Snyder's. We talked MLB with Matt Snyder.
- 20:06What is the Central division, NL Central division odds?
- 20:10What? What are the Cubs right now?
- 20:11All right, let's 'cause they were favoured pre season.
- 20:14Right. They were pretty significant.
- 20:16Yeah, and there was the Brewers and then I don't remember who it
- 20:19was. It wasn't Cardinals.
- 20:20I. Think it was the Reds I.
- 20:21Think it was the Reds and then Pirates.
- 20:22Cardinals. Yes.
- 20:24Play offs, divisions. Here we go clicking on that
- 20:27National League Central. Your betting favorite is
- 20:30probably the Cubs. It is the Cubs plus 180 better
- 20:33price than you would have got before the season began.
- 20:35The second choice. Brewers.
- 20:38Yes, the last place team plus 275 for them, then the buckos
- 20:42plus 330 Reds at 4:00 to 1:22 to 1:00 on the birdies on the bat.
- 20:50Which is about where it was, I think, prior to the preseason.
- 20:53So if you put the Cubs with the, I don't know.
- 20:58I mean, I don't want to throw the Dodgers in.
- 21:00I don't want to throw the Brave. Braves are, Braves aren't
- 21:03they're not coming back, I don't think.
- 21:05I mean, I know it's April the 21st or whatever.
- 21:08Well, just name the National League Cubs, Dodgers and the
- 21:11Mets and the Braves. And the Braves put them
- 21:12together. What kind of money do I get?
- 21:13A little bit better than 4 to 1. That's that's worth it A.
- 21:16Little bit better than 4 to 1. Because I think the Dodger
- 21:19obviously very. Far even as well as the Padres
- 21:22are playing. Padres are off to a good start.
- 21:23Yeah. Nobody else in that division.
- 21:26Diamondbacks are OK Giants know. Obviously.
- 21:29The Rockies know though. They took 2A4 from the Dodgers.
- 21:31How does that happen? Scott Dockerman next before we

- 22:18our final break, we'll get Trent's plays of the day was
- 22:20five and one yesterday. Scott Dockerman back with us at
- 22:23a couple of weeks off. I went on a long plane ride.
- 22:25Did you not, thought? Good to have you back, good to
- 22:27talk to you. Where were you?
- 22:28How much fun did you have? I had a great time.
- 22:31I went to my wife, myself and my daughter went and met my son.
- 22:36He lives in Germany. So we were in Munich for three
- 22:38or four days and went to Vienna for three or four days and.
- 22:42I kind of. Bounced back and forth and it
- 22:45was fantastic. You know, very, I never been
- 22:48there before. So saw a lot of great places at
- 22:51both, both locations and even got to see an American football
- 22:55field from the train as we were driving.
- 22:57Really fly. They're going from the train
- 22:59from Munich to Garnish Parton. Garnish Parton?
- 23:03Yep. No.
- 23:04Well, yeah, the Edelweiss Resort, my son works there.
- 23:08So yeah. So I got, I was like, no way
- 23:12there's an American football field.
- 23:14I took a very bad picture of it, but yeah, it's still pretty
- 23:16good. That's awesome.
- 23:17So a lot of beer and Schnitzel or what was kind of on the menu.
- 23:23Beer yes, I would say also a lot of pretzels.
- 23:30It's it's pretty impressive the amount of bread there, but I I
- 23:34tell you what you know, go in there hanging out and and then
- 23:36even see in that football field. I thought what an amazing spot
- 23:40this would be for say Iowa or Wisconsin to maybe Iowa State to
- 23:44to have a game here in Munich. I mean, it would just be, it
- 23:48would be the perfect location for the fan bases of the Midwest
- 23:52that can have German heritage. It's it would be a perfect spot
- 23:56for so many reasons. Just one more on this.
- 23:59How do you get there? I mean, where do you fly through
- 24:01Chicago? To where?
- 24:03I actually, we flew from Cedar Rapids to Charlotte and then
- 24:07Charlotte had a direct. So it was, it was pretty easy
- 24:10trip. I didn't have to go through
- 24:12O'Hare, which was great. And Charlotte's a decent
- 24:15airport. So that was, you know, so very
- 24:19not very intrusive, not a lot of, you know, not two or three
- 24:22stops, just one layover. And yeah, it was a perfect trip.
- 24:27You now we're back and now you're back working and that
- 24:29means we are able to read some of your great articles,
- 24:32including. Read 1 today.
- 24:34Yes, the back end of the NFL draft and something that we know
- 24:38that you love. Obviously Doc is the NFL draft
- 24:40and writing about it and covering it for years now with
- 24:42The Athletic and he talked a little bit about Logan Jones.
- 24:45Maybe the most interesting piece because finding these numbers
- 24:49are very difficult coming back and he earned $750,000 from
- 24:53revenue share in NILA season ago at Iowa.
- 24:57Is that the going rate for a returning starter at Iowa?
- 25:01Is that maybe a fair baseline to look at or we're talking about a
- 25:04guy that was coming back for a six year, had a lot more than
- 25:07just a year as a starter or three-year starter at that
- 25:09point. Is it different or is that a
- 25:11good baseline to understand where I was at least sitting
- 25:14right now with the revenue share in NIL?
- 25:17Yeah, I mean, each each position is unique.
- 25:21And I mean Logan Jones's situation is different than just
- 25:24about anybody else's. But I think for a player in his
- 25:27position, the fact that he was coming back as a first team all
- 25:30Conference Center, it gave him some leverage.
- 25:33Now his negotiation skills, what we're real strong, let's put it
- 25:39that way. I mean, he he could have he
- 25:41probably could have gotten more. He was worth it.
- 25:44And I would say like from talking to some of our guys on
- 25:48the, you know, that they really handle this more directly than
- 25:50even myself. You know, the going rate for
- 25:53like an offensive tackle, if the upper rate for the best of the
- 25:57best of first team, All American type, let's say Kaden Proctor or
- 26:00something would be in the neighborhood of like 1.3 million
- 26:03right now. And in the bottom end for a
- 26:05starter at a Power 4 is generally about 600 K, maybe a
- 26:09little less than that if they're just kind of elevated there.
- 26:12But. So you know, he's probably, you
- 26:14know, for an interior offensive lineman, probably in the upper
- 26:173rd, I would say, but he probably could have commanded a
- 26:20little bit more. But it it does provide you a
- 26:22little bit of a window. But but I think, you know, the
- 26:24the genous of the story pretty much is that it's more about if
- 26:30he had the opportunity to come back and not really not feel
- 26:33like he was losing a lot of money.
- 26:35Yes, he was leaving some on the table for sure, But it's more
- 26:39about you can come back in today's world.
- 26:42And at the NFL level, they're a little they're they're nervous
- 26:46about this. Is that players like a Logan
- 26:48Jones, who, you know, if we're talking about the 2016 draft,
- 26:52maybe he goes to the draft, maybe he's a 5th or 6th rounder,
- 26:56something like that. And then they have a year with
- 26:59him and maybe he's their starter.
- 27:01But instead, now he's staying in college, which means that it
- 27:06elevates the 6th rounders to the fourth round because the numbers
- 27:10are generally lower right now. It was early entries are cut in
- 27:15half from what they once were because of NI, which you which
- 27:20you'd say is a good thing. I mean, some of these numbers
- 27:22are pretty strong. I mean, you're talking about it
- 27:25used to be like in the neighborhood of 121 early draft
- 27:29entries. Now you're talking about 40 and
- 27:3250s. So, and you know, a lot of times
- 27:35it's 40 less underclassmen get drafted then once then did five
- 27:40years ago and NIL plays the role for that.
- 27:43So the NFL draft team, the teams are a little bit worried because
- 27:48it kind of hurts their talent pool and they're elevating
- 27:51everybody up. But you know, for a player like
- 27:53Logan Jones, who you go back to school, you get great coaching
- 27:59at a position like at Iowa and on the offensive line, you get
- 28:02paid and then you probably make yourself more marketable.
- 28:05So it's actually more of a player strength, which we've
- 28:07never really seen before with the NFL draft.
- 28:09That's interesting, Doc, because Trent and I talked about this
- 28:12earlier. Obviously basketball is leading
- 28:14the athletes to stick around, but because there's some
- 28:18obviously fewer NBA spots on a roster, that's interesting.
- 28:21So it's the back end of the of the NFL draft is where it's
- 28:25where it's affecting it at this point, right?
- 28:26It's not like first, second, third round guys.
- 28:28It's guys toward the back end right now.
- 28:30They're having a decision and some obviously are sticking
- 28:33around in college for next year, which is great for the college
- 28:36game, but I get the NF LS angst over this.
- 28:38But that's where it's happening. Back of the draft.
- 28:40Yeah, because the front end of the draft is still, you know,
- 28:43pretty, pretty stout that. I mean, you're talking about
- 28:47like on Dane Berger's list, the top, you know, roughly the top
- 28:5132, you know, first rounders that he's he's got slated in
- 28:55there. I think he has all but six or
- 28:58seven or so are underclassmen. The guys that had an extra year
- 29:02of eligibility. Mendoza could have gone back for
- 29:04another year. Arbel Reese could have went back
- 29:06for another year, Cardinal Tate, Makai Lemon, you know, Kaden
- 29:09Proctor, the list goes on and on for these players that are going
- 29:13to probably be in the first round, but they chose to come
- 29:16out of here early. So it's not that big of a
- 29:18problem when you're talking about like, I think it's like 33
- 29:21out of the top 50 are underclassmen, but then out of
- 29:25the top 100 in Danes list, they're only 40.
- 29:28They're 44, which means that after the 33 and I think it's
- 29:32there's 59 early entrance. So there's like 26 guys that are
- 29:36outside the top 50. So it, and it makes perfect
- 29:40sense if you think about it, guys that, that in football and
- 29:42in basketball, it really helps the players because now they
- 29:46have the opportunity to get paid.
- 29:47So they're not forcing themselves in.
- 29:49And I, I saw it when I covered it with the Chiefs 20 years ago
- 29:53to, to all these years through that, a guy like let's say Gino
- 29:57Stone, you know, seven years ago into that after what 2019 he
- 30:04needed to go back to college. He became the 7th rounder, but
- 30:06he wanted to get some money in his pocket.
- 30:09If he comes back to Iowa or even transfers, you know, he gets
- 30:12more money, probably becomes a first team own conference guy,
- 30:15elevates his draft stock. And whereas back then he didn't
- 30:18have that opportunity. I I was fascinated by our piece.
- 30:22I knew you were working on it because you've been working on
- 30:24this Purdue piece for a while, if memory serves, maybe back to
- 30:27the Big 10 basketball. And it's been a while, but it's
- 30:31a great piece, Doc and I I'm trying to figure out what the
- 30:33hell you do in covering Purdue football for.
- 30:36But then when you put it out there, it's it's, it's obviously
- 30:39comparing, you know, rival Purdue to Indiana and look where
- 30:42Indiana is and why can't Purdue follow suit.
- 30:45I thought that was a fascinating read, Doc it published today,
- 30:49yeah. Juxtaposos between the, you
- 30:55know, the juxtaposition, let's say between Purdue and Indiana
- 30:58could not be greater right now than ever before.
- 31:01I mean, they used to kind of be almost codependent.
- 31:03You know, well, we're we like basketball, we tolerate
- 31:06football, but now you've got the the national champion that was
- 31:0916 and O versus alongside you got Purdue, which is trying to.
- 31:13Rebuild that has lost. 18 straight Big 10 games.
- 31:16And everybody in that state, kind of like in Iowa, where, you
- 31:20know, except in that case, they're they're actually in the
- 31:22same conference, but they're, you know, looking over their
- 31:25shoulders saying, everybody's saying, well, why can't you do
- 31:28that? And that's, you know, really
- 31:30difficult, especially in a campus like Purdue that has had
- 31:33such great success in basketball.
- 31:36So now in football, you're going, you know, we, we're on
- 31:38our own timetable. I mean, what happened in at
- 31:41Indiana was miraculous. It was loaves and fishes and
- 31:45scale. And whereas with Purdue, you
- 31:49know, they're more on traditional timetable.
- 31:51And last year, I mean, God, you know, they had 80 some, I think
- 31:54it was 81 new players a total. And, and so, you know, I, I
- 31:59found their, their story fascinating because they're
- 32:02trying to rebuild in the portal, but in a classic way.
- 32:06And to do that within earshot of their biggest rival, which had
- 32:09the greatest turn around in, in, in sports history.
- 32:13I think that's, you know, it, it just shows the difficulties and
- 32:18the, the, the ability that they have to just identify what works
- 32:21for them and build it that way. Not worry about what Indiana's
- 32:25doing, because if you do that, you'll just drive yourself
- 32:27crazy. Some newsy stuff in College
- 32:29Football Week 0, the waiver process being eliminated.
- 32:33Is this setting us up for teams can schedule Week 0?
- 32:37That's going to be maybe the NFL when they go to an 18 game
- 32:40schedule. They're going to butt up to
- 32:41Labor Day, start their season there.
- 32:44Take us in kind of your thought process of the changing schedule
- 32:47and eventually what it's going to be for the College Football
- 32:49Playoff. Oh, it's it's.
- 32:51It is. Fascinating, Trent.
- 32:53I, I mean, week 0 is this is something that I anticipated it
- 32:56quite a few years ago that that that would end up being that
- 33:00they'll just make it a standard 14 week season.
- 33:03And, and that way you have 12 games over 14 weeks.
- 33:06And I know like for the big 10, that's, you know, it's so
- 33:09bunched up this year and even the SEC, the same thing that I
- 33:12think this will work well for them.
- 33:14And you know, when it comes to scheduling And now for the NFL,
- 33:19if they ever go to 18, that they'll have a protracted fight
- 33:22for that with the players association, which I understand.
- 33:26I, I think they should go the other way, which is be a little
- 33:29deeper into the season and go all the way to like presidents
- 33:32weekend. And the networks would probably
- 33:36like it because it's a sweep month in February.
- 33:38So you can get a little more action that way.
- 33:41But I think with college football that this is good
- 33:44because then you start to look at how you, how are you going to
- 33:46implement this playoff system and how are you going to make
- 33:49that work? And if you can end the season
- 33:53Thanksgiving weekend. And I'm, I'm a proponent of
- 33:56turning that into like a flex weekend and make it your
- 33:59championship weekend. And then if you can start the
- 34:01playoffs the first weekend in December, you, you can really
- 34:06change the, the calendar because this year, I think the, the
- 34:09January 25th, yeah, it's too late.
- 34:14I mean, it's just too late. And, and when you have the
- 34:16portal situation and I, I just think that this is, you know,
- 34:20it's a disaster. So I, I wouldn't, I think this
- 34:23is the right way to go is to, is to start the season a little bit
- 34:27earlier, try to wrap up championship weekend, the
- 34:30weekend of Thanksgiving and then go in your playoffs.
- 34:33I I think that's probably the best way to go for the sport.
- 34:36Will you be covering the draft this weekend?
- 34:38Will you get to Kinnick on Saturday?
- 34:39What's your plans, doc? Yeah, I'm doing draft grades
- 34:43again, Nick Baumgartner and I have done that for the last
- 34:46handful of years. And so that's that's Thursday
- 34:49and Friday and that is pretty difficult actually to be a knee
- 34:53jerk reaction. Hey, did they pick to get the
- 34:55right pick and and and then Saturday I'm kind of doing
- 34:59double duty. I am going to go to Kinnick
- 35:00because I do want to see this. I think the the quarterback
- 35:03competition fascinates me. It's one that's going to last
- 35:06until September and no doubt about it.
- 35:09And I I do want to see how they perform.
- 35:11And in Iowa has a kind of an interesting unique angle in
- 35:14college football because everybody else, when they went
- 35:17to the portal, they decided to go with, you know, Moneyball
- 35:21approach, get players that have been very successful at FCS
- 35:25programs. And and then they decided not to
- 35:27go in the portal for a quarterback and they're going
- 35:30these guys compete. So I think they have a real
- 35:32fascinating story that I want to check out on Saturday, but but
- 35:36then concurrently I'll be doing a lot of draft stuff that day
- 35:40and then following it up at night and on Sunday as well.
- 35:42You can't say quarterback, So what position group outside of
- 35:46quarterback are you looking most forward to?
- 35:48Just getting some eyeballs on for the Hawkeye Saturday.
- 35:52Good question. I think there's, there's several
- 35:54that I mean, there's several that I'm intrigued with and then
- 35:56there's several that I think are important.
- 35:58They're not, they don't necessarily intersect.
- 36:00I want to see the receivers because I I think that I want to
- 36:03see Tony Diaz, you know, hurdle a million good things about him.
- 36:06If he and and and I think Reese Vanders is healthy and DJ, you
- 36:10know, Vaname is, is, is we can take build on what he did last
- 36:14year. Iowa might be pretty good at
- 36:17that, that pass catching, which is something I haven't seen for
- 36:19a while, you know, like in 15 years or so, then you throw in.
- 36:25But I think defensive line to me is the one that I'm most
- 36:28concerned about because you lose so many players and you're
- 36:33bringing in some newbies. But they need to make strides
- 36:35there. Because if I was off, defensive
- 36:37line is not upper level, it's not going to compete for a high
- 36:42level in the season. Is that is that is the one
- 36:45position offensive and defensive lines at Iowa, if they're not
- 36:48good or not very good, I should say they have no chance in
- 36:52competing for, you know, the highest level of the Big 10.
- 36:55So that that's an important one. And then finally, I probably say
- 36:58linebacker because I think Cam Buffington might be a breakout
- 37:01performer and I want to see how he performs on Saturday.
- 37:05Good. Hopefully your schedule allow us
- 37:06to share what you learned on with us on Monday.
- 37:09Hey, real quick before we let you go, we tossed this around in
- 37:13their first segment. Diego Pavia, he's going to get
- 37:16drafted in all likelihood, Doc, don't you think?
- 37:18I mean you're probably seventh round or or does he go, does he
- 37:23go the free agent or does he hear his name called?
- 37:24You think? I don't know, I doubt he gets
- 37:29drafted, but I, I, you'd have it.
- 37:33It's kind of like one of those Tim Tebow type situations.
- 37:36And I mean completely different personality.
- 37:38I mean 180, but it's about the distraction.
- 37:41And do you feel like your team is equipped to handle somebody
- 37:45like that? And he has a lot of positives.
- 37:48I mean, we saw the the negatives more so in, in, in December
- 37:51locally. But I think the positives are
- 37:54very strong. I mean, he's a baller, he can do
- 37:57it all. And and so I think a team that,
- 37:59hey, let's, let's see what he can do.
- 38:01Let's bring him in and and see if we can, you know, he can
- 38:05bring a level of maturity to himself that he hasn't shown.
- 38:09You know, he's got a chance to be a 510 superstar.
- 38:12You know, if you're The Jets and you're like, wow, you know, this
- 38:14guy can go out and ball. So I think he he gets he's
- 38:19definitely got a job on Saturday.
- 38:20I just don't know if a team that's a more of a traditional
- 38:24makeup wants him as a distracted player.
- 38:27So, but I, I, I think he's a, if he's given a chance, he might
- 38:33make the most of it. He'll be like a local star and
- 38:37do some good things for somebody if he gets that opportunity and
- 38:40he doesn't screw it up with his personality.
- 38:42Javier with the New York media, that'll be good TV.
- 38:47Good stuff, Doc Thank you as always, appreciated.
- 38:49Glad you had a great time with the family.
- 38:51Glad you're back. Selfishly, we'll read you at the
- 38:54Athletic as we always do, and we appreciate when you join Trent
- 38:56and I Thank you, Scott. Dr. Man appreciate it.
- 38:59Thanks for having me, appreciate you.
- 39:00Good to talk to you Scott Dockerman as we check in on a
- 39:03number of topics with the doc Good stuff out of doc.
- 39:06So you're right. There's more guys that are
- 39:08staying away from the NFL draft at the back end of the of the
- 39:11draft. That makes sense.
- 39:13I guess when you laid out the way that the doc does well done.
- 39:16Take your time out transplays of the day or next.
- 39:18He was five and one. Listen up.
- 39:21His pick. It sounds like you're just
- 39:22putting the hex. On me over there pressure's.
- 39:25On Geez, are you taking the Mets or your Twinkies?
- 39:28Neither. We'll find out who he's playing
- 39:30next. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 39:32Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 39:34Welcome back. Final couple of minutes in the
- 39:36Iowa Sports Radio Network. Coming up next off the bench, no
- 39:39more keywords, more opportunities to win $1000 in
- 39:42that nationwide contest. Plays of the day momentarily.
- 39:46So with Billy Donovan leaving the Bulls, you don't think he
- 39:49goes? He doesn't get a college job
- 39:50now, does he? Does this Kentucky fire Pope to
- 39:54get in front of it? If they can get him, yeah.
- 39:56You fire Hope yesterday. Self said.
- 39:59He's coming back. That would be one that I would
- 40:02think would intrigue him. Yes, absolutely.
- 40:05A2 time national championship would be.
- 40:07He's the fan base I would imagine as well.
- 40:09Right. Or did you just sit out a year
- 40:11and and become the number one target next year that?
- 40:15Probably is the thing, but we continue to hear with the North
- 40:17Carolina job, he wasn't interested in going back.
- 40:19To college, true, but if you get AGM now, I mean you don't.
- 40:24Have hearing Rick Barnes talk about it, He said if it wouldn't
- 40:28change like this, he wouldn't still be coaching.
- 40:31Yeah, but because it's now it's just.
- 40:33It's not It's not what? It's about the buddy.
- 40:35Right, you'd have to get in living rooms and convince.
- 40:37Kids, it's not building 3-4 year relationships when you're an old
- 40:40guy that gets taxi. Sure it does.
- 40:42Today's environment. Hey, come visit our campus you
- 40:45like get the package. Class.
- 40:46Yeah, all. Right sign on the dime if you.
- 40:48Can get somewhere. If you get more somewhere else,
- 40:49good luck to. You right, it just simplifies it
- 40:52and I completely understand that perspective from a guy like
- 40:55that. So I think, yeah, the year off
- 40:56probably makes sense and just getting away from that just
- 40:59morbid organization. Yeah, man, they're terrible.
- 41:01No, they really are, no doubt about it.
- 41:05Speaking of terrible. Yes, Sir.
- 41:07Time for my picks of the day. Golden State for Billy Donovan.
- 41:10It's a good one, Jeff. Hold on.
- 41:11If if Curse curse going. You think so?
- 41:15Yeah. I, well, I listen to him.
- 41:17It sure sounds to me like he's got 1 foot out the door.
- 41:20Could Steph Curry say I got one more year?
- 41:21Can he stick around for one more?
- 41:23But does does he have one more year?
- 41:25Does that one does OK, but does he have enough to take care of
- 41:28his team for one more? One more with LeBron.
- 41:31Oh, now you're coming up with this.
- 41:33All right, so there's a tentacle.
- 41:35All right, take your tinfoil off.
- 41:36Make your picks. I am shocked.
- 41:39I have not had this many picks in a day in a long time.
- 41:42I know, I know, I know. All right, I'm just going to RIP
- 41:46through these quick Braves and the Nationals over 8 1/2.
- 41:51Sixers tonight. I'm grabbing the 14 1/2.
- 41:54Speaking of Boston on the ice, give me the Bruins plus 148,
- 41:59Baltimore plus 114 tonight in Kansas City.
- 42:02We stay in that game with the player prop Bobby Witt over 1
- 42:051/2 total bases. Never bet those.
- 42:08Before, but your new your new helper.
- 42:12EV says that's the one, so we'll do that one.
- 42:14We're going to play two NBA props, Drew Holiday over 5 1/2
- 42:18assists, Darren Fox under 1 1/2, three pointers, and then three
- 42:23more late night because why not give me the mammoth, I've never
- 42:26said that before, Plus 140. The A's right back to the well
- 42:30again, plus 140, and I'm playing the Rockets tonight, minus the
- 42:33four in the hook. The Utah Mammoth even up with
- 42:36the VGK. We shall see.
- 42:39You shall hear off the bench. That's coming up next, we're
- 42:42Miller and Condon. Trent and I talk sports with you
- 42:45every Monday through Friday from noon until two.
- 42:48We sure appreciate you listening in when your schedule allows.
- 42:51We're back tomorrow. Thanks for being with us.
- 42:53Talk to you tomorrow on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
