Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / Given Ep.1- Boys in the Band
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle. I think this is gonna
- 0:04Speaker 1: be interesting for multiple reasons. One, I'm just getting over
- 0:08Speaker 1: a cold, so I don't know what my voice sounds like,
- 0:10Speaker 1: but it's probably not great. But it's not like it
- 0:13Speaker 1: ever sounds great, So I think it's gonna be okay.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You know, you're not expecting much voice wise, probably so yeah.
- 0:20Speaker 1: But also like, I have a guitar and we're gonna
- 0:23Speaker 1: do all sorts of things maybe or not. I don't
- 0:25Speaker 1: really know what's gonna happen yet, So this is either
- 0:29Speaker 1: gonna be really cool or really stupid or maybe both.
- 0:33Speaker 1: That sounds good. So, as I said last week and
- 0:38Speaker 1: the week before, we're gonna be starting Given today, the
- 0:41Speaker 1: anime series Given, you know that thing, And uh, this
- 0:47Speaker 1: is gonna be a little bit different for us because
- 0:49Speaker 1: I don't think we've ever done a show that didn't
- 0:51Speaker 1: have any like action element to it. So hopefully this
- 0:54Speaker 1: doesn't make you really sad and hate everything. I mean,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I hope it makes you sad in the right place parts,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but not sad that you watched it. Yeah. So, I mean,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I haven't even really talked about what Given is about,
- 1:07Speaker 1: so I figured we would just kind of very briefly
- 1:10Speaker 1: touch on the fact that given is in the boys
- 1:14Speaker 1: Love genre, which I assume you know what that means,
- 1:19Speaker 1: because it's what it sounds like. It's anime or manga
- 1:23Speaker 1: that's about guys in homosexual relationships. And just a side
- 1:29Speaker 1: note before I continue this, if you're like, wow, you
- 1:32Speaker 1: sound really different in this area as opposed to the
- 1:34Speaker 1: rest of the episode, Michelle, it's because I am re
- 1:37Speaker 1: recording this section several days later because I did not
- 1:43Speaker 1: like the first take. I didn't think it was cool
- 1:45Speaker 1: or informative enough, so I'm trying again. And also my
- 1:49Speaker 1: cold is kind of cleared up, so that's what's going on.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But anyway, boys love makes sense, right. Boys Love, which
- 1:57Speaker 1: sometimes in the West we might call like yawie as well,
- 2:01Speaker 1: is specifically an offshoot of shojo, which is interesting, right.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's manga or anime about men in relationships with other
- 2:10Speaker 1: men that is geared towards women, which is different than
- 2:14Speaker 1: something like bata, which is men in homosexual relationships that's
- 2:19Speaker 1: geared towards men. Yeah. I don't really know either what
- 2:23Speaker 1: happened there. I mean, I've heard people say, well, oh,
- 2:26Speaker 1: it's just women fetishizing gay men. I mean, like, I
- 2:32Speaker 1: could understand that, but you gotta work with me here,
- 2:36Speaker 1: because that would mean that women who read shojo fetishize
- 2:39Speaker 1: all relationships. Because Uri, which is girl's Love, is also
- 2:44Speaker 1: an offshoot of shojo, and a lot of shojo has
- 2:48Speaker 1: heterosexual relationships in it too, so women just like people
- 2:52Speaker 1: in relationships, I guess, or at least that is what
- 2:55Speaker 1: the people who write shojo think women want. So there
- 3:00Speaker 1: you go. But anyway, boys love comes from shojo, and yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 1: sometimes we call it yawi here. Usually in Japan, yawi
- 3:10Speaker 1: is specifically used for dojenshi, which are self published manga,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and those self published manga are usually sexual, like explicitly sexual,
- 3:20Speaker 1: so it's not exactly the same, but it kind of is.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And I also just wanted to point out that yawi
- 3:25Speaker 1: is a port man to is that how you pronounce
- 3:28Speaker 1: that a port manteau? I don't know of like a
- 3:33Speaker 1: phrase in Japanese which is yamanashi ochi nashi im nashi,
- 3:38Speaker 1: which means no climax, no point, no meaning. So it's
- 3:41Speaker 1: kind of a self deprecating thing to say, hey, we
- 3:44Speaker 1: just care about sex. We don't put any of that
- 3:47Speaker 1: plot shit in our dojenshi, which I think is funny
- 3:50Speaker 1: and it makes me respect them a little bit more. Actually,
- 3:53Speaker 1: not that I don't respect them, it's just kind of
- 3:55Speaker 1: upset of bits. So anyway, back to boys love specific
- 4:00Speaker 1: this genre has been called a bunch of different things,
- 4:03Speaker 1: including shown an eye and stuff, but we kinda it
- 4:07Speaker 1: seems like it's mostly referred to as boy's love. And
- 4:11Speaker 1: that term was first used in nineteen ninety one by
- 4:14Speaker 1: Image magazine, and it kind of caught on in nineteen
- 4:17Speaker 1: ninety four, so since then it's been it's been boy's love.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 1: But the first boy's love shojo, but what we consider
- 4:25Speaker 1: to be the first boy's love Shojo was published in
- 4:30Speaker 1: nineteen seventy, specifically in the December nineteen seventy issue of
- 4:35Speaker 1: Basatsu's show Jo comic, which is now known as Betsukami,
- 4:40Speaker 1: And you might recognize that because it's the only shojo
- 4:44Speaker 1: manga magazine that we've talked about at all. And it
- 4:47Speaker 1: makes me like, have just this great dwelling amount of
- 4:51Speaker 1: pride and respect for them, So I'm super happy it
- 4:55Speaker 1: happened to be this one. But anyway, this first Boy's
- 5:01Speaker 1: Love was called Sunroom Nte and it was by Keiko Takemiya. Basically,
- 5:06Speaker 1: it's a tragic love story and it was a one shots. Actually,
- 5:10Speaker 1: later Keiko Takemiya did publish something that was kind of
- 5:14Speaker 1: a full series version of this called Kase Toki no Uta.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But before they published Sunroom Nte, Keiko Takemiya had tried
- 5:24Speaker 1: to get Kase Toki no Itita published, but it didn't
- 5:29Speaker 1: really work out. Like basically, her publishers refused because a,
- 5:35Speaker 1: there's gay guys in it and they weren't ready to
- 5:38Speaker 1: do that, or I don't know if they ever thought
- 5:41Speaker 1: they were gonna be ready to do that. And it
- 5:43Speaker 1: featured and this is the thing I kind of want
- 5:45Speaker 1: to talk about, It featured a male main character, and
- 5:49Speaker 1: they didn't think that women would want male main characters.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Now I just find this really surprising. But then not
- 5:58Speaker 1: at the same time, there seems to be a disconnect
- 6:01Speaker 1: where for some reason, and this is continued to today
- 6:05Speaker 1: to people who make stories and shit, or people who
- 6:10Speaker 1: publish stories or you know, they believe that the reader
- 6:15Speaker 1: cannot connect with a character unless they look like them
- 6:19Speaker 1: or they're in some way like them physically, which I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 1: we have no evidence that supports that, and we really
- 6:28Speaker 1: never have, so yeah, I don't know. I mean, there's
- 6:32Speaker 1: no reason to believe that women wouldn't want to have
- 6:35Speaker 1: male leading characters, and we know that that simply just
- 6:40Speaker 1: isn't true. I mean, obviously, from the plenty of boys
- 6:44Speaker 1: Love that exists, women are totally fine with male main
- 6:49Speaker 1: characters the same way that men are okay with female
- 6:52Speaker 1: lead characters. And also we can tell from what happened
- 6:56Speaker 1: with boys Love that you know, straight women are okay
- 7:01Speaker 1: with gay lead characters. So what I'm trying to say
- 7:06Speaker 1: is people are going to like your characters if you
- 7:09Speaker 1: make them likable and relatable, regardless of what they look
- 7:12Speaker 1: like or their sexuality or whatever. And it's really important
- 7:15Speaker 1: that we have kind of like a natural diversity of
- 7:19Speaker 1: you know, main characters in a sense that it's it's
- 7:22Speaker 1: important that we understand and that publishers understand that you
- 7:28Speaker 1: don't have to be one specific way to be relatable
- 7:31Speaker 1: and likable, is what I'm trying to say. But moving
- 7:34Speaker 1: on from that, there is a little bit more I
- 7:35Speaker 1: wanted to tell you about sun Room Nete and about
- 7:38Speaker 1: Keiko Takemiya. So anyway, Keiko Takemiya was like, cool, I
- 7:44Speaker 1: can't get my fucking shit that I want to get published.
- 7:47Speaker 1: So what does she do? I'm not really sure, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: it ends up that she decides to submit sun Room Nete,
- 7:55Speaker 1: which again is kind of a condensed version of the
- 7:58Speaker 1: story that she wanted to published, and the publishers turned
- 8:01Speaker 1: her down to Betsu Kami, and she submitted it to
- 8:06Speaker 1: her editor like right right before the December nineteen seventy
- 8:10Speaker 1: issue publishing deadline, and I don't know how this happened,
- 8:14Speaker 1: but it was so soon before the publishing deadline that they,
- 8:17Speaker 1: I guess didn't have time to reject it, so it
- 8:20Speaker 1: just went through. Yay. I'm thinking that's an actual strategy
- 8:23Speaker 1: and not that was just her late getting it to
- 8:25Speaker 1: her editor. And it really fucking worked out for her
- 8:28Speaker 1: because not only was this published, but it was really
- 8:32Speaker 1: really well received and critically acclaimed. So again, everybody was
- 8:37Speaker 1: just fucking wrong. But anyway, let's talk about given a
- 8:41Speaker 1: little bit, because I could talk about Boy's Love forever
- 8:44Speaker 1: and that seems mean so given. The anime is based
- 8:48Speaker 1: on the manga by Natski Kizu, which ran in the
- 8:53Speaker 1: bimonthly Manga magazine Sherry Plus from twenty thirteen to twenty
- 8:57Speaker 1: twenty three, which is a boy's love magazine by the way,
- 9:01Speaker 1: And I don't know what bi monthly means. I don't
- 9:04Speaker 1: know if it means twice a month or every other month.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I have no idea. I couldn't figure it out. So yeah,
- 9:11Speaker 1: it has ended already. There was a Given tenth mix
- 9:15Speaker 1: which premiered in Sherry Plus in January twenty twenty four.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I think that's already over, but that takes place ten
- 9:21Speaker 1: years after the manga ends. I also think there's like
- 9:24Speaker 1: an oba of it which you didn't know about until
- 9:26Speaker 1: recently either, so I feel pretty dumb. But yeah, anyway,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I was trying to look into Natzki Kizu. I don't
- 9:32Speaker 1: think she is any other like serialized works like this.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I think she might have had a one shot at
- 9:38Speaker 1: some point, but this was like this is like her
- 9:40Speaker 1: big thing, so yeay. I think that she's a really
- 9:45Speaker 1: great artist actually, and I really really like her character
- 9:48Speaker 1: designs a little bit more than I like the anime's designs.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I mean, the anime character designs are totally good in everything,
- 9:55Speaker 1: but I think that some of the characters, especially in
- 9:57Speaker 1: Ma Fuyu. She's just like gorgeous in manga, and I
- 10:00Speaker 1: think he just looks fine in the anime. So yeah, again,
- 10:04Speaker 1: feeling weird about this. So I did find some contents
- 10:08Speaker 1: from an interview that Natzki Kizo did for pesh or
- 10:13Speaker 1: something in twenty nineteen, and I learned some fun stuff
- 10:17Speaker 1: that I wanted to tell you about. So, first of all,
- 10:21Speaker 1: this is a music manga an anime obviously, and they
- 10:27Speaker 1: asked her, like what kind of music they were supposed
- 10:30Speaker 1: to be playing, because you know, when you're writing like manga, like,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you can't write the music in unless she's like actually
- 10:38Speaker 1: writing in like the notes, that actually be really cool
- 10:41Speaker 1: if like she just was like, here's the sheet music,
- 10:44Speaker 1: this is what they're playing. But she didn't do that,
- 10:46Speaker 1: so they were like, well, what was it supposed to be?
- 10:48Speaker 1: And she said she never decided what kind of music
- 10:50Speaker 1: they were playing, which sure, I mean, which is really
- 10:56Speaker 1: interesting to me because I don't know how you wouldn't
- 10:58Speaker 1: know how it would sound. But that's just someone who
- 11:01Speaker 1: writes music in my head a lot, So maybe if
- 11:03Speaker 1: you don't, maybe that would be normal. I don't really know,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but I found it very very interesting. They also asked her, like,
- 11:10Speaker 1: what's her experience with music and stuff. She basically said
- 11:12Speaker 1: she really likes music, but she's like never been in
- 11:14Speaker 1: a band or anything, and she did like study music,
- 11:18Speaker 1: but she didn't do too much with it, Like she
- 11:20Speaker 1: was talking about studying specific instruments, but it didn't say
- 11:24Speaker 1: what instruments those were, so I don't know. I did
- 11:27Speaker 1: learn that she went to university for something related to movies.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I don't know what, but that's pretty cool. And then
- 11:35Speaker 1: one other thing that I thought was really interesting. And
- 11:38Speaker 1: you either will think it's super interesting or you will
- 11:41Speaker 1: just want to hit me when you hear this. So
- 11:44Speaker 1: she was asked like, what was her influence, like her
- 11:47Speaker 1: boys love influence when she was writing Given, and she
- 11:51Speaker 1: said that she didn't have a boy's love influence, but
- 11:54Speaker 1: she specified that her influence was banana fish, So there
- 11:58Speaker 1: you go. I don't know, man, what do you want
- 12:00Speaker 1: for me? Apparently her dad really really liked banana Fish,
- 12:03Speaker 1: so she had all the manga and stuff like that.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I don't really know. So now you know, this is
- 12:08Speaker 1: inspired probably slightly a little bit by banana Fish. So
- 12:13Speaker 1: I promise it's not like that, and you don't have
- 12:15Speaker 1: to worry, but uh yeah, I thought that was really interesting.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So as for the anime itself, the anime just has
- 12:25Speaker 1: one season and a movie and maybe some obas that
- 12:29Speaker 1: I didn't know about. But the season of the anime
- 12:32Speaker 1: came out in twenty nineteen and it was done by
- 12:35Speaker 1: Studio Lurch or Lererche I don't actually know how to
- 12:40Speaker 1: pronounce that, which you may know from asobe Asso Bass Assassination, Classroom,
- 12:49Speaker 1: Daganne Rahmba, and Toilet Bound Honakokkun, which I liked, and
- 12:54Speaker 1: they all have kind of a nice flare to them.
- 12:56Speaker 1: So yay Given's director was Hikatu Yamaguchi and this was
- 13:03Speaker 1: her first full season anime directorial debut. Basically she had
- 13:09Speaker 1: done storyboarding for Kintama Bleached the thousand Year Blood War
- 13:13Speaker 1: part of it, and I didn't write anything else down.
- 13:15Speaker 1: So those, yeah, that's what I got for that. As
- 13:20Speaker 1: for the voice actors, I wanted to point out the
- 13:25Speaker 1: character that we will really be introduced to and following
- 13:28Speaker 1: very much first and is, you know, basically a co
- 13:31Speaker 1: main character if not the main character. Uino Yama Ritzka
- 13:35Speaker 1: is voiced by Yuma Uchida, which that sounds familiar to
- 13:40Speaker 1: you it might be because he's done a lot of
- 13:42Speaker 1: voice acting, and he's also voiced two of the main
- 13:48Speaker 1: characters in series that we've watched or I've watched and
- 13:51Speaker 1: then told you about that you might remember. You can
- 13:54Speaker 1: say them now and then I'll yeah, that one and
- 13:58Speaker 1: the other one too. Good job. So the ones that
- 14:01Speaker 1: you would know from this show are Sakara Hadika from
- 14:05Speaker 1: Windbreaker and then ash Links from Banana Fish, and I
- 14:10Speaker 1: think that he sounds a little bit more like ash
- 14:12Speaker 1: Links than Soaka in this particular one. He's also the
- 14:16Speaker 1: voice actor of Megumi Fushigo from Jiujitsu Kaizen and Soma
- 14:23Speaker 1: Kio from Fruits Baskets. And that's all I wrote down.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yay As for our second kind of lead male character,
- 14:33Speaker 1: I will not tell you his name yet because he
- 14:35Speaker 1: doesn't have a name for like the first half of
- 14:36Speaker 1: the episode, but his voice actor is Shogo Yano, who
- 14:41Speaker 1: doesn't have a lot of voice acting credits that I
- 14:43Speaker 1: was familiar with, but was Miura Kai in Honeylemon Soda,
- 14:47Speaker 1: which I did not watch, but I thought maybe you
- 14:49Speaker 1: would know and you'd be like, oh, And then we
- 14:52Speaker 1: have two supporting characters that are very important. One of
- 14:57Speaker 1: them is voiced by Masamoto Nakasawa, who I didn't really
- 15:01Speaker 1: know anything about, and the other one is Takuya Uguchi,
- 15:05Speaker 1: who you may remember as Julius from Ree zero and
- 15:10Speaker 1: if you like Spy Family, he's Lloyd. So there you go.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I feel like everything is going really really fast, and
- 15:15Speaker 1: you're getting like scared something terrible is gonna happen or
- 15:19Speaker 1: that is happening already. I swear this is gonna be
- 15:21Speaker 1: a really easy show, like a nice palate cleanser, sort
- 15:26Speaker 1: of firm everything else we've been doing before we get
- 15:30Speaker 1: into whatever's next time, which I'm sure will be terribly
- 15:33Speaker 1: sad and horrifying. This is pretty sad too, But you know,
- 15:37Speaker 1: so now that I've said a bunch of things that
- 15:40Speaker 1: I don't even know if we're correct or if you understood,
- 15:44Speaker 1: let's do this thing that we're gonna do. So every
- 15:49Speaker 1: episode of Given is named after a song, particularly an
- 15:54Speaker 1: English alt rock song. So the first episode is called
- 15:58Speaker 1: Boys in the Band. Now, this was difficult for me
- 16:02Speaker 1: because if you just search for Boys in the Band,
- 16:05Speaker 1: or if I do at least, the first song that
- 16:08Speaker 1: comes up is in new Kids on the Block song,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and I was like, really but seems terrible. But after
- 16:17Speaker 1: doing a little bit more searching, it's also the name
- 16:19Speaker 1: of a Libertine song, which I think is what we're
- 16:21Speaker 1: going for, And that particular song came out in two
- 16:25Speaker 1: thousand and two and it was part of their album
- 16:27Speaker 1: Up the Bracket. I don't know if these songs are
- 16:31Speaker 1: gonna be relevant to the episodes or if they're just
- 16:33Speaker 1: gonna be cool fun titles because Boys in the Band
- 16:36Speaker 1: make sense for the episode as just the title, But
- 16:40Speaker 1: after kind of looking into the lyrics and the meaning
- 16:42Speaker 1: of the Libertine song, it also almost kind of sort
- 16:46Speaker 1: of a little bit makes sense. Basically, the Libertine song
- 16:49Speaker 1: is about groupies and like being in a band and
- 16:55Speaker 1: being like followed by groupies who don't actually really know
- 16:57Speaker 1: anything about you as far as I can tell, which
- 17:00Speaker 1: almost again almost kind of works just a little bit.
- 17:04Speaker 1: So yeah, I don't have any experience with groupies. I
- 17:09Speaker 1: don't know if a lot of bands do. I mean,
- 17:10Speaker 1: once you're at a point where people actually care, maybe
- 17:15Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know who cares. I don't care,
- 17:17Speaker 1: and I'm glad I don't have any experience with grupies.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So let's do this because I feel really weird about
- 17:25Speaker 1: it for some reason. Side notes, you should know that
- 17:29Speaker 1: within the last maybe two years or so, I have
- 17:31Speaker 1: realized that I'm probably a fujoshi, So I might really
- 17:35Speaker 1: really vi into this and it might worry you. And
- 17:38Speaker 1: I'm sorry. There's really nothing I can do about this.
- 17:42Speaker 1: That was too much information, but I said it, so
- 17:44Speaker 1: let's just do it. So this first part of the
- 17:48Speaker 1: episode is just all silent, like we have background noise
- 17:52Speaker 1: and you know, sound effects, but there is no music.
- 17:55Speaker 1: So we fade into a bedroom with a bed and
- 17:59Speaker 1: that has like a blue comfort on it, and there's
- 18:01Speaker 1: a dresser and a table and has like medium gray walls,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and there's like a ray of light kind of cutting
- 18:08Speaker 1: across the floor and then up onto the wall. It
- 18:11Speaker 1: looks to me like a door is cracked, but it's
- 18:13Speaker 1: not the door because the door is in view. It's
- 18:15Speaker 1: probably like like a gap in the blinds or something.
- 18:20Speaker 1: And we hear a clock ticking, and then the door
- 18:24Speaker 1: that's in frame opens and we see legs walk past
- 18:27Speaker 1: the bed. A hand reaches and lifts a soft guitar
- 18:31Speaker 1: case that you would put like an electric guitar in,
- 18:34Speaker 1: and then we see someone with orange hair put the
- 18:37Speaker 1: guitar on their back. We're seeing it from behind, so
- 18:39Speaker 1: we don't know like what their face looks like. And
- 18:43Speaker 1: then we cut to a hand taking you know, power
- 18:45Speaker 1: plug out of a phone. Next we see a dark,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know, semi dark hallway at least with a small white,
- 18:52Speaker 1: fluffy dog on the floor panting, and we hear the
- 18:55Speaker 1: sound of the door opening, and the dog starts like
- 18:58Speaker 1: running in circles. We see his legs walk towards it,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and a hand rubs its head and it makes like
- 19:05Speaker 1: really cute sounds like it's super happy, and the hand
- 19:09Speaker 1: lifts and we see like boots being put on. We
- 19:13Speaker 1: hear the door open and see like a profile of
- 19:18Speaker 1: a guy really just the farhead to the bridge of
- 19:21Speaker 1: his nose as the light from outside the door hits
- 19:25Speaker 1: him as he's opening the door. His eyes are like
- 19:29Speaker 1: kind of brown or reddish lightish reddish brown. Next, we
- 19:34Speaker 1: see the door close and the dog is still in
- 19:37Speaker 1: the hallway, just wagging its tail. Then we see a
- 19:40Speaker 1: hand as it turns the key in the door lock
- 19:43Speaker 1: and it clicks. We cut to a down cast looking
- 19:46Speaker 1: teenage boy with kind of reddish hair in the manga,
- 19:49Speaker 1: it's more like red red. In the anime, it's kind
- 19:51Speaker 1: of like orange ish brownish ish color with brown eyes.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I guess, actually guitar on his back, and he's standing
- 20:01Speaker 1: kind of in the middle of the screen, framed by
- 20:04Speaker 1: like an out of focus, like really bright, over exposed
- 20:08Speaker 1: city behind him, and we hear him say, I guess
- 20:12Speaker 1: he's thinking this. I keep having the same dream. He
- 20:16Speaker 1: turns from the door and he starts to walk down
- 20:19Speaker 1: like an exterior hallway of like an apartment complex that
- 20:22Speaker 1: I don't really see here a lot, but apparently he's
- 20:25Speaker 1: in Japan A bunch. He continues over and over again.
- 20:30Speaker 1: We see now some large like city buildings, and this
- 20:34Speaker 1: guy is walking with like a ton of other people
- 20:37Speaker 1: down the streets. His head is slightly down, and also
- 20:40Speaker 1: he's wearing a brown sweater. I thought you should know that. Next,
- 20:44Speaker 1: we see a clock like on the wall, like an
- 20:46Speaker 1: analog clock in a subway station, and it clicks to
- 20:49Speaker 1: seven thirty six, and we hear a voice say thank
- 20:52Speaker 1: you for waiting. The ten car rapid express bound FIRSHN
- 20:55Speaker 1: Djuku is now arriving at platform three. Okay, so we're
- 20:59Speaker 1: probably in Tokyo. Since Shinjuku is a ward of Tokyo.
- 21:03Speaker 1: The guy is standing at this you know, subway station,
- 21:08Speaker 1: kind of hugging his guitar, and some schoolgirls are kind
- 21:12Speaker 1: of to his rights or kind of in front of him,
- 21:14Speaker 1: and they're looking at their phone and like talking about
- 21:17Speaker 1: it and laughing together. He looks over at them, and
- 21:21Speaker 1: he continues to think over and over. He clutches the
- 21:26Speaker 1: bottom of the guitar case, and then it fades to
- 21:30Speaker 1: him clutching the bottom of this red is semi hollow
- 21:33Speaker 1: guitar without a case. Obviously, we pull back and we
- 21:36Speaker 1: see that he's holding the guitar and he's looking up
- 21:39Speaker 1: at someone with dark hair. We can only see just
- 21:43Speaker 1: like kind of the corner of the top of their heads,
- 21:46Speaker 1: sort of in the top of the frame. But there's
- 21:51Speaker 1: a rope in the frame too, which I don't even
- 21:54Speaker 1: know if I caught the first time, but yeah, there's
- 21:57Speaker 1: just a little bit of a rope. Now we see
- 22:00Speaker 1: the floor. There were two beer cans, look like they're empty,
- 22:03Speaker 1: they're lying down, and then maybe the legs of a
- 22:07Speaker 1: stool that has been knocked over, and at the very
- 22:10Speaker 1: back of the screen, two feet wearing socks dangling. We
- 22:17Speaker 1: get a closer shot now of our red haired guy,
- 22:19Speaker 1: wide eyed. He grasps the guitar's neck and forcefully pulls
- 22:25Speaker 1: down on the fifth through first strings, and one of
- 22:28Speaker 1: them snaps. We vades a black Now we see him
- 22:33Speaker 1: opening his eyes, and a voice says, the rapid Express
- 22:36Speaker 1: bound for Shinjuku is now departing. Please stay clear of
- 22:39Speaker 1: the closing doors. He's standing on the train kind of
- 22:43Speaker 1: next to the door, which is a good place to
- 22:45Speaker 1: stand if you want to get off quickly, but also
- 22:47Speaker 1: super annoying if people keep getting on and you to
- 22:49Speaker 1: move out of the way. But whatever. The door closes,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and he turns to the window in the door and
- 22:57Speaker 1: he's looking out at the people walking by, and he
- 22:59Speaker 1: looks looks sad, which makes sense given what we've just seen,
- 23:05Speaker 1: or kind of like he's longing for something. A lot
- 23:08Speaker 1: of the emotions in the show were really subtle, which
- 23:11Speaker 1: we've done before where I've said, like, it's gonna be
- 23:14Speaker 1: hard for me to get these emotions right because they're
- 23:16Speaker 1: really subtle. This is another show like that. But anyway,
- 23:20Speaker 1: he closes his eyes and he rests his head on
- 23:22Speaker 1: the guitar. We hear him think I'm not lonely. Yeah,
- 23:25Speaker 1: I don't believe you. Now we see an exterior shot
- 23:28Speaker 1: of a generic looking anime school, which is just like
- 23:32Speaker 1: a big white school with many floors, and it has
- 23:34Speaker 1: a clock just on it, like a you know, analog clock.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And I have never seen a school in the US
- 23:43Speaker 1: that has just a clock on the outside of it.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Maybe there are some, but not where I live, so
- 23:48Speaker 1: I always think this is interesting. Anyway, a bell is ringing,
- 23:52Speaker 1: and we cut to inside the school in a hallway
- 23:56Speaker 1: where we see a sign for classroom two ten. Then
- 23:59Speaker 1: in inside the room, we kind of pan down where
- 24:02Speaker 1: a black or like dark blue haired guy is sitting
- 24:05Speaker 1: next to a window because he's that kind of guy,
- 24:08Speaker 1: with his head on his desk. We can hear someone
- 24:11Speaker 1: walking over, and all we can see as they come
- 24:14Speaker 1: into frame is that they're holding a basketball under their arm,
- 24:17Speaker 1: and the person says, ouwey no yama, wanna go buy
- 24:20Speaker 1: some bread? That's the weird thing to ask someone. The
- 24:23Speaker 1: person puts their hand on this guy's shoulder, who I
- 24:26Speaker 1: guess is uway no Yama, and shakes them like really gently,
- 24:29Speaker 1: and we get a better look at who this kid
- 24:32Speaker 1: is who's bothering the sleeping kid, and he has like
- 24:35Speaker 1: lightish brownish oranges hair and eyes. I guess that's just
- 24:39Speaker 1: kind of a non colory brown. I don't really know
- 24:41Speaker 1: how to describe it. And we see the black haired
- 24:45Speaker 1: kid rise and he's mostly out of frame except for
- 24:48Speaker 1: like the top of his head, and he says, now,
- 24:53Speaker 1: I'm too tired. The guy's like, aw, wanna play some basketball?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Then yeah, he's he's he like too tired to get forehead,
- 25:02Speaker 1: but he can play basketball. Sure. Uno Yama, who has
- 25:05Speaker 1: blue eyes by the way, yawns and he stands up
- 25:07Speaker 1: and he's like, I'm gonna go take a nap, and
- 25:09Speaker 1: he starts to walk away. The guy's like again, yeah,
- 25:13Speaker 1: he needs to get more sleep, apparently. Uno Yama starts
- 25:17Speaker 1: to leave the classroom, and as he's doing so, a
- 25:20Speaker 1: girl with chin length kind of light brown or orangeish
- 25:23Speaker 1: hair notices, so I think she's important. Next, we see
- 25:28Speaker 1: his feet as he walks down the hallway. He's like
- 25:30Speaker 1: slumped over. He yawns again because I can't talk about
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yonning without yawning, and he gets tears in his eyes
- 25:39Speaker 1: because it's that big of a yawn. He walks down
- 25:42Speaker 1: the stairs and then like into a gym, and he
- 25:45Speaker 1: like waves to some kids who are playing basketball. But
- 25:47Speaker 1: he walks through the gym. Then he pushes open a door,
- 25:51Speaker 1: yawns again damn it, and starts to walk up like
- 25:58Speaker 1: a quiet staircase. There's no one else there that I
- 26:01Speaker 1: guess is attached to the gym. For some reason, we
- 26:04Speaker 1: see like a card of basketballs and stuff in the corner.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I don't know why you need this staircase, but whatever. Anyway,
- 26:12Speaker 1: he looks up the stairs and he sees that on
- 26:15Speaker 1: the landing, you know, between the sets of stairs, is
- 26:19Speaker 1: that red haired kid laying down hugging his guitar. He
- 26:24Speaker 1: looks like he's asleep. Well, okay, no, he's not asleep.
- 26:27Speaker 1: He opens his eyes and he sees Ueyo Yama, and
- 26:31Speaker 1: Ueyo Yama flinches. The red haired kid sits up, and
- 26:35Speaker 1: Uayo Yama kind of like groans a little, and the
- 26:39Speaker 1: red kid like slides over like towards the wall, and
- 26:43Speaker 1: he puts his hand up like, you know, you can
- 26:45Speaker 1: go past me. It's okay, kind of deal like you
- 26:47Speaker 1: would do, which is kind so Ueya Yama doesn't have
- 26:50Speaker 1: to step on him or over him. Oh heyo Yama
- 26:53Speaker 1: makes sort of like a really confused noise, but then
- 26:56Speaker 1: he walks up the stairs and he also sits on
- 26:58Speaker 1: the landing because I guess that's where he was going.
- 27:02Speaker 1: The red kid is like, who are you? Ueyoyama kind
- 27:05Speaker 1: of flinches and it's quiet for a second, and he says,
- 27:08Speaker 1: the name's Uwayo Yama. The red kid looks away like
- 27:12Speaker 1: he's thinking about something maybe, and there's just silence. After
- 27:17Speaker 1: a couple of seconds. Ueyoyama let's have kind of a
- 27:20Speaker 1: really frustrated sound to exhale, and he's like, seriously, say something,
- 27:24Speaker 1: would you like use your damn words? You're creepy as hell.
- 27:28Speaker 1: The red kid like looks kind of confused, which I
- 27:32Speaker 1: don't think you should be. You did ask who he was,
- 27:35Speaker 1: Maybe you should tell him who you are, and he
- 27:37Speaker 1: still doesn't say anything. So finally, Ueyoyama like points to
- 27:41Speaker 1: his guitar and he's like, your strings are rusty, that's
- 27:43Speaker 1: why one of them broke. Fix it already. He turns away.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Why do you want a guitar if you can't even
- 27:48Speaker 1: maintain The red kid just kind of leans over him,
- 27:52Speaker 1: which kind of throws uay No Yama off, and he
- 27:55Speaker 1: shrinks back, like what the fuck is wrong with you?
- 27:57Speaker 1: Shrink back and he's like what the red kid says,
- 28:01Speaker 1: this can be fixed? He moves closer. Oh Weeya Yama
- 28:05Speaker 1: shrinks back again, and he's like huh. The red kid
- 28:08Speaker 1: moves closer again and says it can be fixed way No.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yama shrinks back again and says, of course it can.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Back off, would you. The right Kid's like, really, we
- 28:20Speaker 1: can see now that the string that broke it was
- 28:23Speaker 1: the fifth string on the guitar, which is the A string.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Just so you know. Ohayo Yama is just like what
- 28:30Speaker 1: the right kid says, couldn't you fix it fast?
- 28:34Speaker 2: We know?
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yama's like, well yeah, the right kid says, could you
- 28:40Speaker 1: fix it now? O Aya Yama's like, uh, I mean
- 28:44Speaker 1: probably not right now, like I don't have tools. Red
- 28:48Speaker 1: kid sighs and he looks so forlorn, and there's just silence. Eventually,
- 28:54Speaker 1: Ueya Yama makes some sort of sound like he's frustrated,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and he turns a little bit and he seems pretty
- 28:59Speaker 1: stri The red kid is still quiet, and Uayo Yama
- 29:04Speaker 1: starts like rocking his leg like super annoyed and then
- 29:08Speaker 1: his eyes snap like wide open, and we cut to
- 29:10Speaker 1: him pushing the classroom door open like really forcefully, and
- 29:13Speaker 1: then opening the stairwell door again, and then to like
- 29:16Speaker 1: a string winder and a wirecutter and a pack of
- 29:19Speaker 1: Dio Bronio Excel regular light gauge strings, and he says,
- 29:24Speaker 1: would just stop looking at me, like the whole world
- 29:26Speaker 1: ended over a broken string. He is now turning the
- 29:30Speaker 1: tuning pegs, cutting the strings of the wirecutter and pulling
- 29:34Speaker 1: strings out of the pack, and he's like, now I
- 29:36Speaker 1: feel bad, like I got your hopes up just so
- 29:38Speaker 1: I could crash him back down. The Red kid is
- 29:40Speaker 1: just watching this astonished. Ooh hey, no Yama continues, give
- 29:44Speaker 1: me back my nap time, damn it. He trims the
- 29:47Speaker 1: strings by the tuning pegs and it's done. I guess.
- 29:52Speaker 1: The Red kid like claps and he's like, oh Ueyoyama
- 29:56Speaker 1: is like, be happier, praise me, pay me for the guy,
- 30:00Speaker 1: damn strings. He puts his hands near the tuning pegs
- 30:04Speaker 1: and the Red kid leans in to touch it or
- 30:07Speaker 1: I guess, maybe take it back, and uay no Yama's like,
- 30:10Speaker 1: not yet, hold your horses, nuby Red kid puts his
- 30:13Speaker 1: hands down as uey no Yama tunes the guitar, and
- 30:17Speaker 1: then he strums the open strings like that's and the
- 30:23Speaker 1: Red kid gasps and he grabs a very confused looking
- 30:28Speaker 1: uay no Yama by the collar and says, please teach
- 30:33Speaker 1: me how to play that thing. Wuyo Yama just stares
- 30:37Speaker 1: confused and horrified because what the fuck, dude, and we
- 30:41Speaker 1: hear him think it all started with that chord I played.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I had no idea that I was strumming hard on
- 30:46Speaker 1: his heartstrings with my own fingers. I think that's kind
- 30:50Speaker 1: of lame, but that's okay. And then he says out loud,
- 30:53Speaker 1: the red Kid's still holding him by the collar. By
- 30:55Speaker 1: the way, uh I need to tune it first. The
- 31:00Speaker 1: camera rushes up to like a bunch of windows, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: uay Noyama thinks, thinking back, it was this encounter that
- 31:07Speaker 1: set in my world racing forward at full speed. And
- 31:10Speaker 1: then we go to the opening theme yay, which is
- 31:13Speaker 1: kizuatough I think by senti Milimental, which is actually a
- 31:17Speaker 1: pretty cool name. I like that a lot, actually like
- 31:20Speaker 1: the song a lot too, and it's just pretty decent opening.
- 31:24Speaker 1: We see that red kid walking and we see ouey
- 31:27Speaker 1: no Yama looking out the school window, and we see
- 31:29Speaker 1: this bartender that we don't know yet, and a guy
- 31:31Speaker 1: smoking in a parking lot, and some other people that
- 31:34Speaker 1: like we really really don't know, and then like uey
- 31:36Speaker 1: no Yama running and the Red Kid looking at the
- 31:39Speaker 1: ocean while it's snowing, and then uey no Yama and
- 31:43Speaker 1: some other people that we don't know playing on stage
- 31:46Speaker 1: and the Red Kid is singing, and then the Red
- 31:48Speaker 1: Kid looking up as uey no Yama approaches the stair landing.
- 31:53Speaker 1: That kind of deal. That's the basic gist of it. Yeah, anyway,
- 31:56Speaker 1: back from the opening, we see lots of tops of
- 31:59Speaker 1: billings like in a city. There's birds chirping. There's a
- 32:03Speaker 1: wall clock that reads seven O four here ticking. We're
- 32:06Speaker 1: in a room with the blinds closed, and there's a
- 32:09Speaker 1: black Fender I guess telecaster. It's the closest I can
- 32:12Speaker 1: figure is what they were going for, which is an
- 32:15Speaker 1: electric guitar next to a Marshall amp on the floor.
- 32:19Speaker 1: And we hear somebody breathing heavy like they're sleeping. We
- 32:22Speaker 1: see that Oueyoyama is asleep in bed, and we hear
- 32:26Speaker 1: the door open and then some black box or briefs
- 32:30Speaker 1: just land right on his head. Yeah ouio Yama makes
- 32:34Speaker 1: like a startled noise, and it's like, what the hell.
- 32:37Speaker 1: A girl is standing at the edge of his bed
- 32:40Speaker 1: with kind of medium length black hair, and she's like,
- 32:44Speaker 1: your gross boxes were mixed in with my stuff, so
- 32:46Speaker 1: your dear sweet sister brought them back to you, you
- 32:48Speaker 1: dumb ass O we know. Yama sits up and is like,
- 32:52Speaker 1: how many times do I have to tell you to knock?
- 32:54Speaker 1: He yawns.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Fuck.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I hope that he doesn't yaw on the whole show,
- 33:00Speaker 1: otherwise we're gonna have a problem. His sister's like, so, mitzka,
- 33:04Speaker 1: you got band practice today. Oueyo Yama, which we now
- 33:08Speaker 1: know is his last name, says huh. He looks up
- 33:12Speaker 1: at her and she's now facing away from him, and
- 33:15Speaker 1: he's like, like, I said, don't bring your relationship issues
- 33:19Speaker 1: to my band. Oh sides, didn't Kaji san dump you already? Fuck?
- 33:25Speaker 1: His sister's like, he didn't dump me, she I guess
- 33:29Speaker 1: throws a half empty bottle of like tea or something
- 33:32Speaker 1: because o hey no. Yama gets smacked in the face
- 33:35Speaker 1: by one and he falls back down. Now we see
- 33:39Speaker 1: treetops and we hear Ouayno Yama say ow be panned
- 33:44Speaker 1: down and he is walking with his guitar and he's like,
- 33:48Speaker 1: damn that Yeyoi. I think that's his sister's name, And
- 33:51Speaker 1: then he thinks, I started playing guitar in sixth grade.
- 33:55Speaker 1: My dad gave me the guitar he wasn't using anymore.
- 33:58Speaker 1: We see him sitting on the floor with a guitar,
- 34:00Speaker 1: you know, younger, and there's like a book, like maybe
- 34:04Speaker 1: a music book on the couch. He's in the living
- 34:06Speaker 1: room and he continues, of course I wasn't gonna be
- 34:10Speaker 1: tom yorke or Keith Richards right away. He's like trying
- 34:13Speaker 1: to play and it sounds really bad. Actually, they did
- 34:15Speaker 1: a really good job in this episode of making him
- 34:18Speaker 1: not sound good when he's learning, which is really important. Actually. Anyway,
- 34:23Speaker 1: we see that Yayoi is also in the living room
- 34:25Speaker 1: and she's like, you suck. He does kind of suck.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Now we see him sitting on his bed practicing still younger.
- 34:34Speaker 1: We hear him say I never could handle things not
- 34:36Speaker 1: going the way I wanted. He has headphones on now
- 34:39Speaker 1: and he is looking at a CD. But I guess
- 34:41Speaker 1: he's listening to by the Artistic Monkeys, which I thought
- 34:45Speaker 1: was hilarious because obviously they couldn't use Arctic Monkeys for
- 34:50Speaker 1: some reason. So I actually think Artistic Monkeys is a
- 34:53Speaker 1: pretty good band name. But yeah, anyway, he continues, So
- 34:57Speaker 1: I became obsessed with music. He smiles, and we fade
- 35:01Speaker 1: into him at his current age, wearing headphones, and he
- 35:05Speaker 1: takes them off and he's holding his guitar. He continues,
- 35:08Speaker 1: and around the time I first started high school. He strums,
- 35:12Speaker 1: and we see him now in a practice space. He continues,
- 35:16Speaker 1: I was finally able to play the way I wanted to.
- 35:18Speaker 1: He sounds really, really good, but before I realized it.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Now we see him standing with a group of guys.
- 35:24Speaker 1: They're kind of in shadow. The more I sharpened my skills,
- 35:29Speaker 1: it looks like the whole group is arguing, and now
- 35:31Speaker 1: we see him playing in his room instead, the more
- 35:34Speaker 1: my old excitement faded. Yeah, sometimes that happens, especially if
- 35:38Speaker 1: you're not conquering new goals. He stops and he stares
- 35:43Speaker 1: at the ceiling. Now we see him looking out the
- 35:45Speaker 1: window at school, and he's thinking about the red kid.
- 35:49Speaker 1: He continues, Now that I think about it. I guess
- 35:52Speaker 1: I almost cried when I first broke a string too,
- 35:55Speaker 1: because I thought i'd broken my guitar. Really, dude, Like, really,
- 36:00Speaker 1: you didn't know that strings were replaceable when you started
- 36:02Speaker 1: playing guitar. Sure, we see the red kid sitting on
- 36:06Speaker 1: the landing, falling asleep on the guitar case and way
- 36:10Speaker 1: No Yama is at the bottom of the steps looking
- 36:12Speaker 1: up at him, and he continues to think, So we
- 36:16Speaker 1: meet again, guy, I'm tentatively calling teach me guitar. Dude.
- 36:20Speaker 1: He is smiling, but he looks stressed. I'm not doing it.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I'm not doing it, you hear. He's just thinking this,
- 36:27Speaker 1: by the way. He starts to walk over and he
- 36:31Speaker 1: puts his hand on the Red Kid's head and he's like, hey.
- 36:34Speaker 1: The red kid sits up, Oh hey, No. Yama looks
- 36:37Speaker 1: kind of smug but also not confident at the same
- 36:40Speaker 1: time somehow, and he continues to think, and I'm gonna
- 36:43Speaker 1: defend my napping spot to the death. Yeah, okay. Red
- 36:48Speaker 1: kid exhales and smiles and he's like, oh hey, no Yama,
- 36:51Speaker 1: kuhn oh hey No. Yama kind of gasps and he
- 36:54Speaker 1: looks a little freaked out. Yeah, you're not doing such
- 36:57Speaker 1: a good job, dude. Red Kid's like, thanks for your
- 37:00Speaker 1: help yesterday. He kind of bows slightly and uway no,
- 37:03Speaker 1: Yama's like sure. Red Kid's like here and he reaches
- 37:08Speaker 1: in his pocket and he takes out a thousand yen notes, which,
- 37:11Speaker 1: by the way, is about six dollars and thirty three cents,
- 37:14Speaker 1: and he's like, this is to thank you. He did
- 37:17Speaker 1: ask him to pay for the string, so that's pretty good.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Oh he know.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Yama's like uh, and he takes it and kind of
- 37:22Speaker 1: stares at it. The Red Kid says, oyo Yama kun oh,
- 37:27Speaker 1: we know. Yama's like he looks up at him and
- 37:30Speaker 1: sees that he is holding the shiniest thousand yen bill ever,
- 37:35Speaker 1: like it's radiating light somehow, and the Red Kid says,
- 37:38Speaker 1: please teach me how to play the guitar. Oayo, Yama
- 37:41Speaker 1: thinks seriously, and then out loud he says, no, I
- 37:46Speaker 1: don't need your money. The Red Kid puts it back
- 37:48Speaker 1: in his guitar case and is like, in that case,
- 37:52Speaker 1: he takes out a package of manly and spicy yaki
- 37:55Speaker 1: sober bread. Apparently take this O WEEO Yama thinks he
- 38:01Speaker 1: looks kind of unnerved, and he's like, look, he sits down.
- 38:05Speaker 1: You can try to win me over with money or bread,
- 38:08Speaker 1: which is strange, but I've never taught anyone to play guitar.
- 38:11Speaker 1: He lays down on his side on landing, facing away
- 38:14Speaker 1: from Red Kid and says, just look up how to play,
- 38:19Speaker 1: or you know, you could join the Light Music Club
- 38:22Speaker 1: try and form a band with some of their members.
- 38:25Speaker 1: The Red Kid looks down at the bread in his
- 38:27Speaker 1: hands and is like a band o weaya Yama shoots
- 38:31Speaker 1: up and he's like, I need to explain that too.
- 38:34Speaker 1: The Red Kid looks at him, and Uaynoyama's like, what
- 38:37Speaker 1: the hell's with you? You carry around a guitar but
- 38:40Speaker 1: you know nothing about it. Red Kid sighs and looks away.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Waynoyama's like, hey, hey, don't get all depressed. You need
- 38:50Speaker 1: to pick what you're doing, dude. The Red Kid is silent.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Oya Yama kind of scratches his head and he's like,
- 38:58Speaker 1: I didn't say it was a bad thing, you implied.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Red Kid looks back over and Owaynoyama has laid down again.
- 39:07Speaker 1: The Red Kid's like really, and he kind of shakes away.
- 39:10Speaker 1: No Yama, Oh, hey No Yama kun o Weo Yama's
- 39:13Speaker 1: like what. The red kid pauses and he's like, please
- 39:17Speaker 1: teach me how to play guitar. This is gonna be
- 39:20Speaker 1: a problem. Now we see a hallway. A door slides open,
- 39:26Speaker 1: and Uwayo Yama looks around both ways in the hallway, concerned,
- 39:31Speaker 1: and then he turns and just bolts down the hall.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Two guys in the classroom where he came from are
- 39:37Speaker 1: just like what. Now we see Wuayno Yama walking down
- 39:41Speaker 1: the streets. We're seeing his feet and he stops and
- 39:46Speaker 1: he says, hey, stop following me. We see that the
- 39:50Speaker 1: red kid is behind him. Way No Yama starts to
- 39:53Speaker 1: walk again, and he walks for a little while, and
- 39:55Speaker 1: he stops and he turns and the red kid is
- 39:59Speaker 1: still fun allowing him and he gasps, and Uaynoyama's like,
- 40:03Speaker 1: I told you, asks someone else if you want to
- 40:05Speaker 1: learn guitar. He waves him off and he starts to
- 40:09Speaker 1: walk again, and then he stops walking a third time
- 40:12Speaker 1: and he turns back and the red kid is crouched
- 40:15Speaker 1: down like hiding behind a pole sort of, but you
- 40:18Speaker 1: can see the whole back of him. It's not working.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Out so well, and Uaynoyama's like, hey, the red kid
- 40:23Speaker 1: looks up and he's like, oh hey, no Yama kun
- 40:27Speaker 1: oo heyo Yama looks like he wants to just kill him,
- 40:30Speaker 1: which I understand because he has asked him nicely to
- 40:34Speaker 1: stop following him and told him he cannot help him
- 40:36Speaker 1: play the guitar and it's actually difficult to teach people
- 40:38Speaker 1: to play guitar, so yeah, gotta leave him alone kid. Anyway, Now,
- 40:43Speaker 1: we see the exterior of like a block building, like
- 40:46Speaker 1: a building made out of concrete masonry units like cinderblocks,
- 40:50Speaker 1: has maybe three or four stories tall, and it has
- 40:52Speaker 1: a sign on it that says some words, and then studio.
- 40:55Speaker 1: It's like two words and the studio, and it looked
- 40:58Speaker 1: like they're in English, but I cannot make them out
- 41:00Speaker 1: for the life of me. They're kind of mushed together.
- 41:03Speaker 1: We see a guy with short blonde hair and like
- 41:06Speaker 1: lip piercings and like a bunch of ear piercings holding
- 41:10Speaker 1: a bottle of green tea and he says, so, uh,
- 41:14Speaker 1: who's that. The red kid is standing behind a very
- 41:19Speaker 1: pissed off looking uway no Yama, and uway no Yama says,
- 41:23Speaker 1: I feel like I picked up a straight puppy. The
- 41:25Speaker 1: other guys like, sorry, what he is sitting behind a
- 41:30Speaker 1: drum set and this is clearly a practice space. O.
- 41:33Speaker 1: We know. Yama's like I tried to lose him but
- 41:36Speaker 1: I couldn't. The guy says sure, I have no idea
- 41:41Speaker 1: what you mean?
- 41:42Speaker 2: Ou Weyo.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Yama turns to the Red Kid and says, hey, show
- 41:46Speaker 1: Kaji San some respect, dammit, Kaji. I guess this person
- 41:50Speaker 1: behind the drums is just staring at this like what
- 41:53Speaker 1: the fuck is going on? And uey no, Yama continues,
- 41:56Speaker 1: just so you know, Kaji San looks really scary, but
- 41:59Speaker 1: he's a nice guy. He just looks scary. Yeah, yeah,
- 42:04Speaker 1: we're kaji. We hear a door open and a guy
- 42:08Speaker 1: with kind of longish blonde hair comes in and he's
- 42:10Speaker 1: got like a little bit of a beard, like just
- 42:12Speaker 1: patchy at his chin and he says, hey, sorry, I'm late. Ah.
- 42:17Speaker 1: He looks at the Red kid. Whoa who the hell
- 42:21Speaker 1: Uino Yama says hey, and then to a red kid says,
- 42:25Speaker 1: this is our bassist, how Doki San? Red kid says
- 42:28Speaker 1: bassist Hodoki walks over. Well, he kind of backs away
- 42:33Speaker 1: towards Kaji and then quietly to him, says, hey, what's
- 42:37Speaker 1: going on. Ueyoyama is explaining what a bass player is
- 42:41Speaker 1: In the background while they talk. Kaji's like, I don't know,
- 42:45Speaker 1: Ueyo Yama just brought him. We hear ueya Yama say
- 42:48Speaker 1: go on, and he pats Red Kid on the shoulder,
- 42:51Speaker 1: and Red Kid steps forward and is like, it's nice
- 42:54Speaker 1: to meet you. I'm Mafu Yusato finally a name. At
- 42:59Speaker 1: this his guitar starts to slide off him, and uay
- 43:02Speaker 1: No Yama has to catch it stop it from falling off,
- 43:05Speaker 1: and Mafuyu bows and says, I came to watch you play.
- 43:10Speaker 1: How do He's like, watch us? Kaji says play. They
- 43:16Speaker 1: turn to each other and they like touch pointer fingers
- 43:19Speaker 1: and then suddenly like get all confident and looks sparkly,
- 43:23Speaker 1: and Kaji's like, well, in that case, how dook He says,
- 43:26Speaker 1: I guess we'll have to show you what we can
- 43:28Speaker 1: do we know. Yama's like, uh, are you guys sure
- 43:31Speaker 1: about this? Kaji says, huh why not? O? Hey, No
- 43:35Speaker 1: Yama quietly to Kaji says he's a total nub and
- 43:39Speaker 1: he doesn't understand shit. Kaji looks at Mafuyu as he
- 43:44Speaker 1: stares at him with like stars in his eyes, like
- 43:47Speaker 1: he's so fucking excited, and Uayno Yama continues, He's probably
- 43:51Speaker 1: expecting some kind of godly performance. Kaji and how do
- 43:55Speaker 1: he kind of both huh in unison and then they
- 44:00Speaker 1: nod at each other and they look super stressed. Kaji's like,
- 44:06Speaker 1: this is bad. Well, only said the bar higher If
- 44:08Speaker 1: we don't say anything, how dook? He's like, wait, don't
- 44:11Speaker 1: say something makes it sound like he's right, really, ouina
- 44:14Speaker 1: Yama's like, just how bad do you guys want to
- 44:16Speaker 1: impress people anyway? Yeah, he sighs, whatever, let's just play
- 44:21Speaker 1: like we usually do. We see a case of pedals
- 44:24Speaker 1: being opened, and we hear someone say I'm pretty sure
- 44:26Speaker 1: it's Kaji not happening. Ouina Yama's like, huh. Now we
- 44:30Speaker 1: see an instrument cable being plugged into an AMP, and
- 44:33Speaker 1: how do Ki says, first and foremost, we want to
- 44:36Speaker 1: look cool. Kaji starts to tap his foot on his
- 44:40Speaker 1: high hat and he's like, I want to summon a storm,
- 44:42Speaker 1: just like Yujito Ishahata. Okay so Yujito Ishihada One Best
- 44:49Speaker 1: Actor at the Blue Ribbon Awards for like two films
- 44:52Speaker 1: from nineteen fifty seven, and one of them was called
- 44:56Speaker 1: The Man who Causes a Storm. So there you go,
- 44:59Speaker 1: and it's about a drummer, so it's perfect now you
- 45:02Speaker 1: know some history or something. Anyway, Paduk says, oh nice,
- 45:08Speaker 1: it'd be cool to go retro. We see one of
- 45:11Speaker 1: those like plug in guitar tuoners getting tuned to D
- 45:14Speaker 1: and he continues, might even sound new again. Mafuu sits
- 45:18Speaker 1: on the floor next day's guitar case and Kaji says,
- 45:22Speaker 1: then we and the rhythm section will go with a
- 45:23Speaker 1: show whatever kind of flow. And then Kaji and Haduki
- 45:27Speaker 1: in unison pointed Wayna Yama and say, you'll top it
- 45:31Speaker 1: off with some fancy modern guitar play. Ouayna Yama's like,
- 45:35Speaker 1: what the fuck does that mean? Okay, let me just
- 45:37Speaker 1: pause here to say that if you don't know, Showa
- 45:39Speaker 1: era in Japan is referring to nineteen twenty six to
- 45:42Speaker 1: nineteen eighty nine, but usually it's used when you're talking
- 45:46Speaker 1: about specifically the nineteen sixties through the nineteen eighties. So
- 45:50Speaker 1: there you go. Anyway, Oua Yama turns to Mafuu and says, uh, what's.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Your name again?
- 45:57Speaker 1: Mafuu's like, uh Sato mafuyu Wa. Yama says, what kind
- 46:02Speaker 1: of guitar do you want to hear? He shrums a
- 46:04Speaker 1: chord kind of sounded like it was a g but
- 46:07Speaker 1: I'm not sure, and mafu You says, what kind o we?
- 46:11Speaker 1: I know? Yama's like, what kind of song do you
- 46:14Speaker 1: want to hear? Mafu You is quiet for a second
- 46:17Speaker 1: and he gasps and he blushes slightly, and he's like
- 46:20Speaker 1: something cool. Yeah, yeah, oh I know. Yama smiles nervously
- 46:27Speaker 1: because that is the worst thing you can tell someone
- 46:30Speaker 1: to play, and he's like, talk about abstract and he
- 46:34Speaker 1: just kind of goes for it and starts to play
- 46:36Speaker 1: like this really upbeat, fast thing, but I obviously can't
- 46:41Speaker 1: share with you, but it's nice. How do He kind
- 46:44Speaker 1: of gasps, and Kaji thinks, oh my, how do? He
- 46:48Speaker 1: thinks he's totally into this. He looks over at Kaji.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Kaji looks back at how do he and thinks, well,
- 46:56Speaker 1: we can't just sit here, can we? How do? Gee
- 46:58Speaker 1: starts to kind of sing a bass line that accompanies
- 47:02Speaker 1: you know. Yama's guitar, and Kaji seems kind of startled
- 47:05Speaker 1: by this. Then how do he kind of transitions into
- 47:08Speaker 1: actually playing the bass line as he sings it, and
- 47:11Speaker 1: he looks back at Kaji kind of like telling him,
- 47:13Speaker 1: like come on, Kaji flinches and he kind of starts
- 47:17Speaker 1: to sing the bass line as well, and then starts
- 47:19Speaker 1: to play the drums. So now everyone's playing super cool
- 47:23Speaker 1: and Mafuyu is just watching awestruck. So I'll try to
- 47:31Speaker 1: give you a description of what's going on here. They're
- 47:33Speaker 1: playing something akin to I guess prog rock. I would
- 47:36Speaker 1: say it's very mathy like. There's a lot of technicality
- 47:39Speaker 1: to it that sounds so ridiculous. But I'm sitting there
- 47:43Speaker 1: trying to figure out what time signature they're in, and
- 47:47Speaker 1: it's five eight, which is pretty cool and also something
- 47:49Speaker 1: that you wouldn't hear people who aren't like kind of
- 47:52Speaker 1: music nerds playing. So it works for prog rock. But uh,
- 47:56Speaker 1: I don't know if this is gonna work out, but
- 47:58Speaker 1: I figured I could explain what five eight is to
- 48:00Speaker 1: you in case you don't know, and you might know,
- 48:03Speaker 1: you probably know, but basically, it's when you have five
- 48:06Speaker 1: beats per measure and if it really is five eight
- 48:10Speaker 1: and not five something else, which it could be I
- 48:13Speaker 1: don't really know, they would be five eighth notes per measure.
- 48:17Speaker 1: So they are not playing this that I'm going to
- 48:20Speaker 1: play because I can't do that. But basically, this is,
- 48:24Speaker 1: you know, the gist of it. So anyway, if you're
- 48:26Speaker 1: playing something in four to four, it would sound like
- 48:35Speaker 1: if you're playing something in three, four or six eight,
- 48:39Speaker 1: it would probably sound like like that. But if you're
- 48:49Speaker 1: playing in five eight, which is kind of a complex timing,
- 48:53Speaker 1: would sound more like so like if you were, you know,
- 49:01Speaker 1: doing something with.
- 49:02Speaker 2: It sort of but not really, but that's kind of
- 49:19Speaker 2: what it sounds like, but not really.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna give up now because I've been trying
- 49:24Speaker 1: not to fuck that up for like five minutes. So
- 49:26Speaker 1: that's kind of what it sounds like. Maybe that just
- 49:28Speaker 1: made you even more confused, but I'm sorry. Basically, so
- 49:32Speaker 1: they are playing in five eights. They sound really good together,
- 49:36Speaker 1: and they're just kind of jamming like this is no
- 49:39Speaker 1: big deal. They actually look really cool, probably cooler than
- 49:42Speaker 1: they think that they look, and Mafuu is impressed as fuck.
- 49:46Speaker 1: His eyes are just wide, and I understand Mafuu because
- 49:51Speaker 1: I am also easily impressed by complex timing and prog rock.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Then we cut to a black screen which I guess
- 49:57Speaker 1: did the eye catch and says given In the bottom
- 50:00Speaker 1: right corner, back from what was probably a commercial break,
- 50:04Speaker 1: we are looking kind of up at the sky and
- 50:07Speaker 1: you know, telephone liars between houses. It's night, or at
- 50:11Speaker 1: least kind of dusk, and we pan down to a
- 50:15Speaker 1: narrow street where Mafu, you and uey no Yama are walking,
- 50:19Speaker 1: and Ueyoyama says, why the hell am I walking you home?
- 50:22Speaker 1: Mafou is just looking at the sky and Oueyoyama glances
- 50:28Speaker 1: at him and is like, hey, you're listening. He is
- 50:31Speaker 1: not listening, Oue no Yama says Sato. Mafuu finally looks
- 50:36Speaker 1: over and he stops walking, and he says, can I
- 50:39Speaker 1: come see you guys play again? Oh uh Oue no
- 50:42Speaker 1: Yama looks surprised for a second, and then he puts
- 50:45Speaker 1: his hand on the back of his neck and he's like,
- 50:47Speaker 1: no way. Mafu, You says, teach me the guitar, please
- 50:53Speaker 1: wayna Yama's like, stop it already. I've never taught anyone.
- 50:57Speaker 1: I don't know how to teach Mafu, you kind of
- 51:00Speaker 1: almost sighs and then says, please teach me. Fuck dude,
- 51:05Speaker 1: oa Oyama is like, knock it off already. I'm telling
- 51:08Speaker 1: you you'd be better off joining the Light Music Club.
- 51:11Speaker 1: He stops quickly because a car is coming down the street,
- 51:16Speaker 1: and he grabs Mafuu's arm and he pulls him out
- 51:18Speaker 1: of the way, kind of like into his chest. Yeah.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Owayna Oyama is like, that was close. You need to
- 51:26Speaker 1: watch behind you. Mafuyu stares up at him, still like
- 51:30Speaker 1: on his chest basically and says, but I can't see
- 51:34Speaker 1: behind me. Owayn Oyama's like, don't get smart with me.
- 51:38Speaker 1: He lets him go. Just go check out the Light
- 51:41Speaker 1: Music Club. They've all start to walk again. I'm not
- 51:43Speaker 1: trying to be mean. I'm telling you this for your
- 51:45Speaker 1: own sake. Mafuyu kind of sighs. Now, we see multiple
- 51:50Speaker 1: apartment buildings and the sky is dark blue, maybe because
- 51:55Speaker 1: it is the city, so it never really gets totally dark,
- 51:58Speaker 1: because it's not like Pitch black. It's just kind of
- 52:01Speaker 1: like weird, unnatural city glow dark, I guess. We see
- 52:06Speaker 1: Yayoi laying on the couch with her legs up and
- 52:09Speaker 1: she's wearing like real short shorts and a sleeveless shirt,
- 52:13Speaker 1: and she says, you're late. Oayna Yama is like, yikes,
- 52:19Speaker 1: gotta wonder about you both as my sister and a
- 52:21Speaker 1: woman when you look like that geese dude. Yayoi is like,
- 52:25Speaker 1: I was waiting for you to start baking the fucking pizza.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Oeyena Yama says, oh, sorry, Yayoi points and says, it's
- 52:32Speaker 1: in the freezer. Get to work. Oha No Yama kind
- 52:35Speaker 1: of makes an uugh sound, and we see his jacket
- 52:39Speaker 1: draped over a chair and his guitar leaning next to it,
- 52:42Speaker 1: and we hear him say, hey, Yayoi, do you remember
- 52:45Speaker 1: what I was doing when I first started playing guitar.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Yayoa's like, what, you were just strumming on it. Oio
- 52:52Speaker 1: Yama puts this frozen pizza on a plate and says, yeah,
- 52:56Speaker 1: my bad. It was stupid even ask you. He puts
- 52:59Speaker 1: the pizza in what I hope is a convection of
- 53:02Speaker 1: it and not a microwave, but I'm not sure, and continues,
- 53:06Speaker 1: then again, I don't really remember either. He obviously, you know,
- 53:10Speaker 1: starts making the pizza and it's turning and sounds like
- 53:13Speaker 1: a microwave. So I'm very upset right now because pizza
- 53:17Speaker 1: should not be microwaved. And I'm no, it's I'm gonna
- 53:20Speaker 1: just pretend it's a convection of and it's fine. Oueina
- 53:23Speaker 1: Yama looks a little upset, and he thinks, see he
- 53:27Speaker 1: rubs his neck. Teaching someone how to play from scratch
- 53:30Speaker 1: is too hard for me right now. It's really challenging,
- 53:32Speaker 1: so I get it. He thinks of Mafu Yu's starstruck
- 53:35Speaker 1: expression when they were playing. I wonder if my eyes
- 53:38Speaker 1: used to look like that too. Fuck. Now we cut
- 53:43Speaker 1: to the gym ceiling, which looks like a gym ceiling,
- 53:46Speaker 1: and we see hands kind of reaching up and like
- 53:48Speaker 1: grabbing a basketball, and it's Uaynoyama and some guy is
- 53:53Speaker 1: like etaya, block etaya. I guess gets in front of
- 53:57Speaker 1: him and Uainnayama shoots and he tyat is shocked, but
- 54:01Speaker 1: then it just bounces off the rim o. Wei no
- 54:04Speaker 1: Yama falls down somehow. I guess when he was shooting
- 54:08Speaker 1: it he got off balance and he's like ow. A
- 54:11Speaker 1: guy says, careful man. Some blonde dude like walks over
- 54:15Speaker 1: and like reaches out his hand to help him up
- 54:17Speaker 1: and says, what's up a witchy? You see him out
- 54:19Speaker 1: of it? That is an interesting nickname. O weio Yama
- 54:23Speaker 1: takes his hand and gets up and is like nothing,
- 54:26Speaker 1: just thinking. He rubs the sweat off his face with
- 54:29Speaker 1: his shirt and we suddenly zoom in on his face
- 54:33Speaker 1: and he thinks, h it's bugging me. He looks at
- 54:37Speaker 1: the door that's you know, to the stairs in the gym,
- 54:40Speaker 1: and he continues, I haven't been over there since yesterday
- 54:43Speaker 1: because I had a feeling i'd give in if he
- 54:44Speaker 1: asked me again. Then out loud, he says, Josa kai
- 54:48Speaker 1: switch with me. He sits down against the wall and
- 54:51Speaker 1: he puts his hand over his face, and he thinks,
- 54:53Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure he's waiting there. Even now. He
- 54:56Speaker 1: looks stressed as all fuck. And he winces and continues,
- 55:01Speaker 1: and with that lost puppy look on his face, I
- 55:04Speaker 1: bet he thinks of a fuzzy white puppy with flowers
- 55:09Speaker 1: around it for some reason, and he continues, damn it,
- 55:13Speaker 1: why do I have to feel so guilty about this?
- 55:16Speaker 1: Next we see like those windows in the stairwell and
- 55:19Speaker 1: we pan down to see Uaynoyama looking up the stairs
- 55:23Speaker 1: and he's like, huh, what, he's not here, Yeah, he's
- 55:28Speaker 1: not there, guys. He looks further up the stairs, and
- 55:31Speaker 1: then he looks next to the stairs because who knows,
- 55:34Speaker 1: maybe he's somewhere else, but he's not. And he thinks,
- 55:38Speaker 1: come on, why is this bothering me so much? Did
- 55:40Speaker 1: he give up? Well, I guess I didn't show up
- 55:42Speaker 1: yesterday or today. But we fade out to Uwayennoyama sitting
- 55:48Speaker 1: on the landing, arms crossed, and he thinks, huh. We
- 55:52Speaker 1: flashed him later at what looks like Golden Hour, like
- 55:55Speaker 1: it's an evening and he's like what. And then some
- 55:58Speaker 1: other time, maybe a different day, he's laying down on
- 56:01Speaker 1: the landing and he thinks what becauts black? Now we
- 56:05Speaker 1: see a very drained looking Ouayo Yama and he is
- 56:10Speaker 1: kneeling and he's like looking at something on a grocery
- 56:15Speaker 1: store shelf. Someone leans slightly into the frame and says, ooh, Heeyoyama,
- 56:20Speaker 1: your mouth's hanging open. Hey. The person walks over and
- 56:23Speaker 1: kneels down and we see that it's Kaji. They are
- 56:26Speaker 1: both wearing the same shirt. I think that they're working
- 56:30Speaker 1: at this store anyway, he knocks on the side of
- 56:35Speaker 1: ouio Yama's head. His head kind of like bounces back
- 56:38Speaker 1: and forth, and he's like, hello, any went home? Ooh
- 56:41Speaker 1: Heinoyama doesn't move except for his head to kind of
- 56:44Speaker 1: slightly rock back and forth. He just looks totally dazed.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Kaji says, you've been making that weird face for a
- 56:52Speaker 1: couple days now. Ou Weeinoyama's like, Kaji son, this is
- 56:56Speaker 1: how I always look. No, it's not. Kaji's like No,
- 57:01Speaker 1: the Uisama I know has a much more regal look
- 57:03Speaker 1: to him. Uino Yama says, what the hell does that mean?
- 57:08Speaker 1: We cut to a room, like a really close up
- 57:11Speaker 1: of a part of a room that has some lockers
- 57:13Speaker 1: and boxes, and we hear Kaji say, ah, I see
- 57:17Speaker 1: what was his name again? Sato Takahashi, Suzuki. He's taking
- 57:21Speaker 1: off his work shirt. O weeinao Yama is also taking
- 57:24Speaker 1: off his work shirt and he says it's Sato. Kaji says,
- 57:28Speaker 1: why don't you look after the kid? Ou Weinoyama's like what.
- 57:32Speaker 1: Kaji says, I think it might be good motivation for you.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Ou weeina Yama's like what. Kaji closes the locker. I mean,
- 57:40Speaker 1: we get this quick flash of Ueyo Yama playing guitar
- 57:43Speaker 1: at the rehearsal, looking like super fucking hyped. Kaji continues,
- 57:48Speaker 1: you were on fire when you jammed the other day.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Uinayama looks like terrified. Now, Kaji continues, well, whatever, let's
- 57:58Speaker 1: just head to the studio. He starts to walk to
- 58:00Speaker 1: the door. Ueina Yama starts to sweat and he thinks, huh,
- 58:05Speaker 1: what was it? Was it actually showing on my face? Yeah, dude.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Now we see the exterior of the practice space and
- 58:16Speaker 1: then Kaji opening the door and Uyo Yama is behind him,
- 58:20Speaker 1: and we hear her Ougi in the room saying, wow,
- 58:23Speaker 1: you did that all by yourself. Awesome. Kaji's like, hey, sorry,
- 58:27Speaker 1: we're lates, and we see that how Douki is talking
- 58:30Speaker 1: to Mafuu. He didn't disappear, he came back. Yeah, I
- 58:35Speaker 1: guess that's what you wanted, I think, Ueo Yama, but
- 58:39Speaker 1: not really, you're confused, I understand. Anyway, how Douki says hey,
- 58:44Speaker 1: and he's like kind of shaking Mafuyu's hand, which I
- 58:46Speaker 1: still don't know what that was about and uio Yama,
- 58:49Speaker 1: and Kaji just looks shocked because yeah, how Douki continues,
- 58:54Speaker 1: Mafulu Chhan came by again. Mafulu starts to turn around
- 58:58Speaker 1: because he was facing towards had Dooki, not the other two.
- 59:02Speaker 1: And as he does, Ueyno Yama's eyes just get wider
- 59:06Speaker 1: and wider and his mouth drops open. On how do
- 59:09Speaker 1: Ki says? He was just sitting outside the studio, so
- 59:12Speaker 1: I let him in. Oh yeah, Akiko, did you buy
- 59:15Speaker 1: me that sea? Akiko is Kaji by the way, Owayna
- 59:18Speaker 1: Yama looks terribly freaked out, and he's just like you,
- 59:23Speaker 1: what the hell are you doing here? He walks slowly
- 59:26Speaker 1: and kind of weirdly towards Mafuyu. Kaji kind of grabs
- 59:31Speaker 1: onto him and is like, geez, calm down. Doki's like,
- 59:35Speaker 1: more importantly, this is amazing. Listen Uichi Owayna Oyama's like, huh.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Mafuu has his guitar on and he's like, look, I
- 59:45Speaker 1: was able to change the strings all by myself. Do
- 59:48Speaker 1: he just changed them a couple of days ago. You
- 59:50Speaker 1: don't have to change them that off, and you're just
- 59:52Speaker 1: wasting money. O Weeinoyama's like, ugh, mafu You is like,
- 59:57Speaker 1: also listen to this, Oh I know? Yama gasps. Mafu's like,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: did I tune it right? It sounds pretty good, sounds
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: kind of like my guitar just sounded, except the strings
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: are really new and my strings are really old and
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: his guitar is electric. But whatever, we see that Mafuyu's
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: middle and ring fingers are just wrapped in band aids.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I guess he's hurt himself changing the guitar strings, which
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: is very sad because it's you shouldn't get hurt changing
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: your guitar strings. But that's okay. Oh we know Yama
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: kind of size, and it's like, didn't you go to
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: the light music club? Mafu You is kind of strumming
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: the guitar a little bit, and he says it did.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Haki is watching this intently with his hand over his mouth,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: and Kaji is watching Hookey and he like brushes some
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: of Hadoki's hair out of his eyes and Hadokey jumps.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: What the fuck, guys, mafu You continues, They had all
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: kinds of people and instruments and it seemed fun. He blushes, slightly,
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: but you're cooler. Oh we know Yama kun. Oh my god,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: oh we know Yama kinda gulps and like an explosion
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: goes off kind of in front of him, an artistic explosion.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Kaji and Haduki both look up and they get like
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: an explosion in front of them too. Yeah, mafu you says,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: so please teach me more about guitar. Hoh huh, And
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: we get the title card zero one boys in the Band,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and we go to the ending theme. It's Mahusuki and
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I don't know who's by, but this is the piano
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: version of it, and it's mostly just mafu U's dog
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: walking around chasing a butterfly, looking in a puddle, see
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: in the night sky. It's totally fine. I don't really
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: like it that much, but it's not bad. It's just
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: not my thing. Then we go to a couple of
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: clips from episode two, which we don't have to talk
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: about because it spoils things. And we see the next
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: title card and it's called like someone in low. Yeah,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: and that's it. Hooray, we did it, and it was
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: probably very terrible for you. I can only imagine. So
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: closing thoughts, I don't know how well the guitar worked out,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: so obviously I haven't edited this yet or anything. So
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: if you're hearing this and you think I didn't really
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: like that, I'm sorry. I did the best I could
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: to make it not bad, I guess, But if it's stupid,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: I will probably not do it in the future. If
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: it isn't stupid, maybe I will do more. Who knows.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: It was kind of hard because I had to switch
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: back and forth. I had to keep picking up the
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: guitar and putting down the guitar. Stuff like that. But
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: it's not that big of a deal, so yeah, I guess.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I didn't really talk about anything like why I'm doing
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: the show and what it means to me. I don't
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: see a lot of music based anime that I like
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: or that I think do a good job at explaining
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: what it's like to be a musician, and I think
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: this show does a pretty good job. I mean, not perfect,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: but better than a lot. And I think the music
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: is really good. So that's kind of one of the
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: reasons I watched this. When I watched this, I guess
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I watched it when it was airing in twenty nineteen.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: I did not expect to like it a because I
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: don't really like music anime very much, and the I
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: wasn't sure how I would feel about this being a romance,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: and I ended up just being really kind of swept
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: up in it in both aspects. So I hope that
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: you like it too this episode, and it's hard to tell,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: you know, just from me talking it to you, but
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: there was a lot of really good use of like
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: silence and like long pauses that had some like really
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: nice comedic timing to them. I really liked the interaction
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: between Uinoyama and Mafuyu and god ouayn Oyama is so
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: high strung man like. I get it though, because it's
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: a big deal to teach someone to play an instrument.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I guess I'm I mean, at least the guitar. I've
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: tried to teach people guitar before. I am not a
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: good teacher, especially not a good music teacher. So if
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: someone came to me and said, please teach me the
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: guitar and like held my collar and was like, I
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: need you to teach me, I would have a similar reaction.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I'd be like, no, I can't teach you. I don't
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: teach guitar. And I would eventually break down and teach
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: the person the guitar exactly like Uaynoyama did. I probably
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: wouldn't be as you know, I don't know, fierce and
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: aggressive in the way I talked to this person, but
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: the conclusion would be the same. I would teach them
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: to play guitar because they look so sad and they
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: need help and apparently I am wildly in love with
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: them or something. I don't know that yet. I mean,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: you know that this is gonna be about like a
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: romance thing because it's boys love, and if it didn't
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: have romance in it, it just wouldn't be boys love.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: It would just be shojo, even though shojo usually has
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: romance in it, but whatever, not all shojo, So you
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: know that. But I thought the beginnings of this were
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: really interesting. I love that Mafuyu is like, no, I
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: want to learn from you because you're really fucking cool.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: And I like the interaction that I'm seeing between Kaji
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: and Hadoki, who obviously are on a really similar wavelength
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: about this and are noticing that they seem to have
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: a good energy together Mafuu and uey no Yama, I mean,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: and that they might like each other. And I felt
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: like there was something going on between Kaji and Hodoki too,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: when Kaji kind of brushed Hodoki's hair off of his face.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: But we'll see what that is later. I don't know.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: I liked it, obviously. We don't know why Mafuu has
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: that guitar, by the way, which is a Gibson hollow
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: body guitar. I'll probably specify what a actual type it
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: is in the next episode or something, but he obviously
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: doesn't play it. He obviously hasn't changed the strings ever,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: which means when he saw what I assume is someone
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: hanging and broke the string, that stayed like on his guitar,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: like the memory of that horrible event was basically transcribed
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: on his guitar with that missing a string. That must
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: be horrible to constantly look at this guitar and just
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: see this missing string, which to him wasn't even a
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: missing string. It was something that he broke, like he
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: saw something that upset him terribly and he broke this
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: object doing so. So that's got to be rough. But
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: it's not easy or fun to carry a guitar around
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: all the time, and it's especially not if you're not
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: gonna play it, and they don't get this quite right.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: But bringing a guitar on like a fucking train is hell.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: It's bad. So I give Mafu you props for just
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: this is his life. He just carries around this guitar
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: all the time, especially because it's not like a small
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: electric guitar. It's hollow bodies, so it's wider, so you're
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: kind of in between an acoustic and electric. Hollowbodies are electric,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: but the body is hollow and it kind of changes
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: the sound. But because they're bigger, they're gonna be bulkier
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: and it's just gonna swing it into people on the train.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: It's gonna be bad. I know, trust me. I know
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I've hit enough people with my guitar that I know.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: So yeah, I don't know. I think I should probably
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: stop talking about this. A lot of this episode is
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: really self explanatory anyway. But I hope that you didn't
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: hate this. I hope that you're okay with this direction.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: I know this is a pretty big departure, so yeah,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I hope that you thought it was okay, and hope
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: that you are interested in seeing what happens next, because
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: obviously Ueynoyama, who I can barely pronounce his name. I
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: could call him uweh, but I'm not. Obviously, he is
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: gonna teach Maufuyu guitar, so that should be cool. Maybe
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: if you think that learning guitar from a boy that
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: you are starting to fall in love with would be cool,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: which actually sounds terrible, but whatever. Yeah, I don't want
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: that at all, but people do. People want to fall
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: in love, and I am happy for them. So yeah,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I think that's really all I have. I'm gonna go
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: away now because I still don't feel totally better and
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I definitely don't sound totally normal, so I gotta like
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: stop recording. I've almost been recording for two hours. I'm
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: sure when you listen to this it will be less
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: than two hours, but I had to re record things
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: a bunch because I'm new to this show and I'm
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: fucking everything up and I can't say O, hey, no
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Yama for my fucking life. So yeah, I hope you
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: have a really good whatever, and I hope you stick around.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: But if you don't, if you're like I don't want
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to do a gay romance anime with music, I think
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: that's sad, but I totally get it. You can leave
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: gracefully and I'll see you one day, but if you
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: are sticking around, I will see you next week, as
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: long as there is a next week. Yep later weeps
