- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads that shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The
- 0:11Boring Company and Neurolink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:15What does the FAA's latest approval mean for Spacex's next
- 0:18steps with a Starship? And how are new exceptions in
- 0:22mishap reporting changing the game for experimental launches
- 0:26from Boca Chica Starbase, Texas? Also, will the upgraded Starship
- 0:31design deliver improved performance?
- 0:33These are the key questions we'll be exploring as we look
- 0:36into Space XS preparation for the next Starship flight, Flight
- 0:407, following the Fe as recent license modification.
- 0:44Now, on December 17th, 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration
- 0:48granted Space XA modified license, paving the way for the
- 0:51next Starship test flight, Flight 7, expected as early as
- 0:56January of 2025. Now, this approval allows SpaceX
- 0:59to execute multiple launches using the Flight 7 mission
- 1:03profile without requiring a separate modification for each
- 1:07attempt. This is huge.
- 1:09The decision was made after a thorough assessment to ensure
- 1:12compliance with all safety, environmental, and licensing
- 1:15criteria of the FAA. Associate Administrator for
- 1:18Commercial Space Transportation Kevin B Coleman said This
- 1:23license modification that we are issuing is well ahead of the
- 1:26Starship Flight 7 launch date and is another example of the FA
- 1:30as commitment to enable safe space transport.
- 1:34The upcoming mission will see Spacex's Starship and Super
- 1:37Heavy booster lift off from Boca Chica, Texas before separating,
- 1:41and the Super Heavy booster will return to the launch site for a
- 1:44catch attempt by the launch tower.
- 1:46While Starship will follow a sub orbital trajectory, culminating
- 1:50in a water landing in the Indian Ocean West of Australia.
- 1:54Now this flight mirrors past missions but introduces upgraded
- 1:58vehicle configurations which could enhance its performance.
- 2:02Still a test vehicle, of course, but one of the most notable
- 2:05elements of the FAA's announcements is the inclusion
- 2:08of a new failure mode. Exceptions.
- 2:11How? Historically, the FAA has
- 2:13permitted certain test induced failures without requiring
- 2:17formal mishap investigations as long as they do not result in
- 2:20injuries, property damage, or debris falling outside
- 2:24designated areas. Previous exceptions included
- 2:27failures like thermal shield damage during high heating or
- 2:31flat malfunctions during high dynamic pressure and for Flight
- 2:347 and beyond. Two additional exceptions were
- 2:37introduced, Raptor engine failure during an in space burn
- 2:41and issues with Super Heavy systems during post booster
- 2:44catch. Vehicle saving of these new
- 2:47allowances reflect the experimental nature of Spacex's
- 2:50Starship program and grant the company some leeways more
- 2:54flexibility to refine its systems without immediate
- 2:57regulatory delays. Spacex's readiness for Flight 7
- 3:01hinges on vehicle in pad preparations, though.
- 3:03Ship 33, the first Block 2 Starship, recently completed
- 3:07engine tests at the Massey's test facility about a mile and a
- 3:11half away from the big facility down there at Boca Chica.
- 3:15Now. These included a spin Prime test
- 3:16to validate its upgraded engine plumbing and two static fires, 1
- 3:20involving all six engines and another simulating a deorbit
- 3:24burn with engine gimbling. Now these tests marked the first
- 3:28deorbit burn test since Ship 29, signifying the advancements made
- 3:33with Block 2 ships and following these milestones, ship 33 was
- 3:37transported back to Mega Bay 2 for final preparations.
- 3:41Now the Block 2 configurations. Let's get into this a little
- 3:43bit. It introduces several
- 3:45significant changes to the Starship design.
- 3:48These tanks have been extended, increasing propellant capacity
- 3:52from 1200 to 1500 tons, while modifications to the forward
- 3:57flaps aim to improve re entry performance and thermal
- 4:01protection. Now, this enhanced design marks
- 4:04a step forward in Spacex's iterative development process,
- 4:08even as the company continues to address challenges identified
- 4:11during earlier flights. Meanwhile, a Super Heavy booster
- 4:15designated for Flight 7 Booster 14, is undergoing its final
- 4:19adjustments in the Mega Bay. This includes the installment of
- 4:23a heat stage ring, a component designed to facilitate engine
- 4:27ignition While the Starship and booster are still connected in,
- 4:31Spacex's decision to incorporate the feature aligns with this
- 4:34ongoing commitment to optimizing the performance of the Starship
- 4:38Now. The launchpad in Boca Chica,
- 4:41also known as Starbase, has seen significant upgrades in recent
- 4:43weeks. While much of the refurbishment
- 4:45has been completed, tasks such as repainting the pads legs and
- 4:49routing cryogenic pipes to the new tanks remain unfinished.
- 4:53It is unlikely that these new tanks will be operational in
- 4:56time for Flight 7, though, given the complexity of integrating
- 4:59them into the orbital tank farm. Nonetheless, SpaceX is expected
- 5:04to conduct a tanking test or even a full wet dress rehearsal
- 5:08before the launch, given the new configurations being introduced
- 5:11with Ship 33. Now let's go back to the FAA.
- 5:15Their decision to streamline licensing process is a great
- 5:19thing, and it's reflecting of their broader efforts to
- 5:23accommodate the new commercial space industry.
- 5:27In October, SpaceX faced delays in obtaining a license
- 5:30modification for Flight 5 due to the FAA's need to conduct
- 5:34additional Sonic boom in environmental assessments.
- 5:37The approval arrived just one day before the schedule
- 5:40launched, prompting concerns about regulatory inefficiencies.
- 5:44Elon Musk took to X and berated the FAA for this, and the FAA
- 5:48has since worked to accelerate its review processes with a
- 5:51Flight 7 license modification issued well ahead of the
- 5:55anticipated launch window. Now, despite these regulatory
- 5:58improvements, though, challenges still remain.
- 6:00SpaceX must address potential safety concerns while
- 6:03maintaining the experimental nature of the Starship.
- 6:05Under Part 450 of Title 14 of the Federal Aviation
- 6:09Regulations, mishaps are defined and monitored rigorously, even
- 6:13as the FAA grants certain exceptions for test induced
- 6:17failures. These exceptions are not
- 6:19unconditional, though. Any incident resulting in safety
- 6:22risks or injuries will still trigger a mandatory
- 6:25investigation. Now, looking ahead, SpaceX aims
- 6:28to meet a tentative launch date of January 11th or January 15th.
- 6:34We're not quite sure yet, and this timing aligns with a NASA
- 6:37request for imaging support from Perth, Australia, suggesting
- 6:41that the flight could occur during daylight hours to
- 6:43facilitate visual documentation of the actual landing of the
- 6:46Starship. If successful, Flight 7 will
- 6:49represent another incremental step in Space XS effort to
- 6:52develop a completely fully reusable rocket system capable
- 6:56of supporting missions to Mars. Now, SpaceX will continue the
- 7:00preparations, though the focus remains on assuring vehicle
- 7:03reliability and operational safety before the flight.
- 7:06The Ship 33's upcoming launch will test not only its enhanced
- 7:09design, but also if it can see of the FAA's regulatory
- 7:13adjustments. With ongoing improvements to
- 7:16licensing processes and vehicle configurations, the Flight 7
- 7:20mission could provide valuable insights for the future of
