- 0:00Speaker 1: Friction maxing. What the hell could that possibly be? It's
- 0:04Speaker 1: one more thing, I'm strong andy, one more thing before
- 0:10Speaker 1: we get to that. New York Times had this article.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I knew TV backlighting was cool, I didn't expect it
- 0:21Speaker 1: to be such a powerful upgrade. I had not heard
- 0:24Speaker 1: of this concept now. Led lighting, as this guy writing
- 0:28Speaker 1: the article talks about, really got hot during the pandemic.
- 0:33Speaker 1: For some reason. I think it was like the technology
- 0:35Speaker 1: just happened to meet it at a time when everybody
- 0:38Speaker 1: was stuck at home.
- 0:39Speaker 2: My time to change their light fixtures.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But they got super cheap, like these light strings Led
- 0:45Speaker 1: light strings. I mean they're so cheap. My son has
- 0:47Speaker 1: them all around his room. He's at them for a
- 0:49Speaker 1: couple of years. They burn out. The other day we
- 0:50Speaker 1: went and got brand new ones for a total of
- 0:52Speaker 1: like eleven dollars. I mean, they're just so cheap, and
- 0:55Speaker 1: you can really make your room look cool different colors,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and then you can have them, you know, for an
- 1:00Speaker 1: extra five bucks. You can run it off your Wi
- 1:02Speaker 1: Fi and change the colors from your phone or all
- 1:05Speaker 1: kinds of.
- 1:06Speaker 2: What Am I a hippie in this scenario? I've got
- 1:08Speaker 2: lamps like normal people.
- 1:11Speaker 3: The TV ones are must have.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Okay, so interesting this backlighting thing, he says, for very
- 1:17Speaker 1: little money, you get these led strips that you put
- 1:20Speaker 1: behind your TV and then they change colors with like
- 1:23Speaker 1: if your TV goes to a dark scene or a
- 1:26Speaker 1: red scene or a light scene, whatever the general color is,
- 1:29Speaker 1: the lights light up in the back of the TV.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And he says, you can't explain until you've seen it
- 1:34Speaker 1: how magical it is and what it does to the
- 1:36Speaker 1: whole immersion TV experience on your big screen TV til
- 1:41Speaker 1: you get these backlights. And so you've done it.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Katie, Yeah, I did it as a surprise for Drew
- 1:45Speaker 4: con It is like you said, it's like the string
- 1:48Speaker 4: it sticks to the back of the TV and then
- 1:50Speaker 4: it has this little contraption that just barely comes over
- 1:53Speaker 4: the front.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Of the TV so it can pick up the colors
- 1:55Speaker 3: on the screen.
- 1:56Speaker 4: And as you're watching, it'll do this lights sequence that
- 2:00Speaker 4: lights up the whole wall behind the TV along with
- 2:03Speaker 4: what's happening.
- 2:04Speaker 3: And it is so cool.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay, two questions, are you are you on mushrooms
- 2:10Speaker 2: right now? Are you answer the question?
- 2:12Speaker 1: All right?
- 2:13Speaker 2: So I don't I don't think I get the appeal exactly.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I don't.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Is it that the whole it's real and you're there
- 2:20Speaker 2: with it or what? What's the deal?
- 2:22Speaker 4: It just and I really can't explain it either other
- 2:25Speaker 4: than it just enhances what you're watching.
- 2:27Speaker 1: That's a word this guy used, an immersion. You're just
- 2:30Speaker 1: more immersed in the I.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Mean, even when you're watching sports, it'll change, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 4: it changes color with the courts or the field, and
- 2:37Speaker 4: it just.
- 2:39Speaker 1: All I know is now this reviewer and you, that's
- 2:41Speaker 1: two people that say, you can't believe how cool this is.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So I'm just going to take their word for it
- 2:45Speaker 1: and get it myself. And it's cheap. Most most examples
- 2:48Speaker 1: they had they were pretty cheap.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Sheep, easy to show sheep.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And super easy put up. So I'm going to do
- 2:52Speaker 1: it this weekend.
- 2:53Speaker 2: So yeah, I totally believe that I'll appreciate it when
- 2:56Speaker 2: I see it. It occurs to me it could be
- 2:59Speaker 2: something like it includes what you're seeing in front of
- 3:03Speaker 2: you in your more peripheral vision, which is the way
- 3:07Speaker 2: we perceive the world. I mean, if I'm looking at
- 3:10Speaker 2: a green football field off in the corners where I'm
- 3:12Speaker 2: not really perceiving much at all, is a green football field,
- 3:17Speaker 2: so it's more immersive.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I don't know. I will explain on the Monday, because
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna get it this weekend and try it out
- 3:23Speaker 1: and my kids and I will really dig it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: What do they call it back of the TV led?
- 3:28Speaker 1: He called it led backlighting? TV backlighting is what he
- 3:30Speaker 1: got TV back enough. So check that out now, So
- 3:33Speaker 1: now you know about it.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Some shrooms, damn hippies.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Now we know that that is. But do we know
- 3:38Speaker 1: what friction maxing is? Let's listen to this.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Well.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Friction maxings is the process of building up our tolerance
- 3:46Speaker 5: for quote inconvenience. One way is to stop sharing your
- 3:48Speaker 5: locations that you have to ask, where are you stop?
- 3:50Speaker 2: You seeing?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Stopping again? I got I had this problem earlier in
- 3:53Speaker 1: the show. We played it right. I don't know how
- 3:57Speaker 1: you TikTok people haven't killed your selves already. If this
- 4:01Speaker 1: is what all TikTok is like, the pace makes me
- 4:04Speaker 1: Nutso they.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Speed it up. There, there's a feature you can.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But why why do you want to be made nutso?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Well, it is making people crazy.
- 4:13Speaker 4: It's making them crazy. But people have to watch your
- 4:15Speaker 4: videos a couple of times.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Oh that's right, you pointed out earlier. If I can't
- 4:18Speaker 1: catch everything the first time, I click on it again
- 4:20Speaker 1: and then again, and so I click on it three
- 4:22Speaker 1: times to get the information. And they got three clicks,
- 4:25Speaker 1: So that might actually be the point. Okay, I'm gonna
- 4:29Speaker 1: really try to focus on this.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, well, that's young people that got the attention span
- 4:33Speaker 2: of a gnat. So you can't even pause for a
- 4:36Speaker 2: second lest they say I need more input mar stimulation.
- 4:40Speaker 2: All right, orphins.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I had that experience you were talking about with one
- 4:43Speaker 1: of your daughters or one of your kids where I
- 4:45Speaker 1: was sitting there or watching something on TV, me and
- 4:47Speaker 1: my son, and he's like, he's got his phone in
- 4:49Speaker 1: his hand, he's looking at his phone and me and
- 4:51Speaker 1: occasionally the TV. I said, aren't you interested in this?
- 4:53Speaker 5: Is?
- 4:54Speaker 1: No, I'm interested. Well you're not watching it? Yeah I am. Okay,
- 4:57Speaker 1: it looks to me like you're looking at your phone
- 4:59Speaker 1: and me and other things just as much as the TV.
- 5:02Speaker 2: It's just the way I do it.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Okay, Then you do the woman thing and go all right,
- 5:07Speaker 4: well then what just happened that we're watching?
- 5:10Speaker 1: Oh that's a good one.
- 5:14Speaker 3: You have no effing idea?
- 5:15Speaker 1: Can I use that tone?
- 5:16Speaker 3: Of voice totally, why not?
- 5:18Speaker 1: But like, where are you making your husband watch some
- 5:20Speaker 1: sort of Jane Austen drama? Pick, I can't remember what
- 5:24Speaker 1: we're watching tuning out on that.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I can't remember what we were watching it, but something
- 5:28Speaker 4: he picked and I looked over and he was on
- 5:30Speaker 4: his phone every time I looked over, and I was like,
- 5:32Speaker 4: do you should we just turn this off? He said,
- 5:34Speaker 4: I'm watching it and I went, all right, well, then
- 5:36Speaker 4: what just happened?
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, there is, That's what happens.
- 5:41Speaker 1: There is something annoying about your sitting down to watch
- 5:44Speaker 1: a show with somebody and they're not watching it.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Well, yes, it is because you're supposed to be having
- 5:49Speaker 2: a communal experience, a shared experience, and they've opted out
- 5:53Speaker 2: in front of you.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And then I'll laugh or I'll say oh my god
- 5:57Speaker 1: or whatever, and they don't react because they weren't watching right. Right.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It's annoying and nobody.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Is ever Lord, forgive me for using this phrase in
- 6:06Speaker 2: the moment. Nobody has ever invested in what they are
- 6:09Speaker 2: doing entirely, which is where the joy is. But you know, people,
- 6:15Speaker 2: good luck. It's telling me and Joe Getty's in Woods
- 6:20Speaker 2: Mellow in the f out commune or if we're doing
- 6:24Speaker 2: one thing, we're doing.
- 6:25Speaker 1: That thing right. And you have to read your pamphlet
- 6:28Speaker 1: before you join Where the joy is you go there
- 6:32Speaker 1: and get your joy on.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And the disclaimer form is long, by the way, hold harmless.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Still don't know what friction maxing is because this person
- 6:40Speaker 1: talks too fast, but I'm going to really try to
- 6:42Speaker 1: listen this time.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Well.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Friction maxings is the process of building up our tolerance
- 6:46Speaker 5: for quote inconvenience. One way is to stop sharing your
- 6:48Speaker 5: locations that you have to ask where are you? Stop
- 6:50Speaker 5: using chatchigoti, buy a cookbook, text your friends for advice,
- 6:53Speaker 5: go to the grocery store, invite people, abore without cleaning,
- 6:56Speaker 5: babysit for someone. These are just like things that we
- 6:59Speaker 5: use to do all the time, but that now we
- 7:02Speaker 5: have really tried to replace with technology.
- 7:06Speaker 2: It reminds me of what's the trend slow uh something
- 7:10Speaker 2: or other?
- 7:12Speaker 1: Slow food?
- 7:14Speaker 2: Slow food, yeah, the whole don't order your groceries and
- 7:19Speaker 2: have them delivered, go to the grocery store and walk
- 7:22Speaker 2: around and get them.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So is the friction just the it's it's a bigger task,
- 7:27Speaker 1: more annoying, but it's better for you in the long run.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Is that where the friction comes? Yeah, like I more
- 7:33Speaker 1: add more to your task to get more out of it. Yeah, okay,
- 7:37Speaker 1: two of those I kind of get that.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Two of them annoyed me.
- 7:40Speaker 4: One Joe pointed out earlier inviting people over without cleaning first.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That doesn't help us proof.
- 7:48Speaker 4: And as a female, if someone asks where are you
- 7:51Speaker 4: and I have been murdered and no one knows where
- 7:53Speaker 4: I am.
- 7:54Speaker 3: It's going to be hard for me to answer. So
- 7:55Speaker 3: I'm not turning off my location.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well right, and my wife and I have our locations
- 8:00Speaker 2: on all the time, and I don't want to bother her.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yeah you know, Hi, what's up?
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah? I just wanted to know where you are.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Well you don't like those examples, that makes sense. But
- 8:13Speaker 1: how about just the concept.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Of I like the cookbook idea.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't know if I can think of an idea.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Would would it be like wash my car with a
- 8:24Speaker 1: bucket and sponge and water instead of hire someone to
- 8:26Speaker 1: do it. That'd be friction maxing, and that's somehow better
- 8:29Speaker 1: for you.
- 8:30Speaker 3: A lot of map instead of GPS talk on the
- 8:33Speaker 3: phone versus text.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Oh god, no, that one is so weird. And every
- 8:39Speaker 1: time I do it, my experience maybe years of differentkatiye,
- 8:41Speaker 1: every time I do it. Somebody called me the other
- 8:43Speaker 1: day and I had direction, but he's oh my god.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I was texting them something and they called me back
- 8:48Speaker 1: instead of taking I don't I am I in a
- 8:50Speaker 1: position to take a call here? I guess I could.
- 8:53Speaker 1: What might they say? I don't know. I pressed the
- 8:56Speaker 1: green button and I answered it, and he answered this
- 8:59Speaker 1: somewhat complex question I had for him on the phone
- 9:02Speaker 1: I had. It was fantastic. I mean it was. It
- 9:04Speaker 1: was obviously better. It was obviously the smart thing to do.
- 9:07Speaker 1: The fact that we were going to continue to text
- 9:10Speaker 1: over this is insane.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Okay, that that situation makes sense. But if you're just
- 9:14Speaker 4: having like a random conversation and then all of a
- 9:16Speaker 4: sudden your phone rings and you know it's gonna be
- 9:19Speaker 4: just a shit chat, uh huh Nope, that's that's me,
- 9:22Speaker 4: and you've cornered me.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I feel trapped.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Wow, how interesting? Yeah, I know what you mean, but.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Well, and you can't let it go to voicemail. I've
- 9:31Speaker 1: been in mentioned before.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Do you know my phone's in my hand?
- 9:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I'm free enough to text, but you
- 9:38Speaker 2: can't talk to me.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Oh, I have trapped you. I'm in surgery right now.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I was texting. But you know, I totally.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Get that and get a new Kenny.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I was texting it right before I went into surgery.
- 9:52Speaker 1: They're cutting on me right now. I'll talk to you later.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Click. But that feeling of dress this is some I'm
- 10:01Speaker 2: serious now. That feeling of oh my god, what are
- 10:04Speaker 2: they going to say? How long is this conversation going
- 10:06Speaker 2: to be? That that has never existed before in the
- 10:10Speaker 2: history of humankind? And it absolutely if you extrapolate that
- 10:15Speaker 2: to young people being nervous and like upset and unsure
- 10:20Speaker 2: of something that ought to be as routine as anything
- 10:23Speaker 2: can be. That's why everybody's so stressed and unable to
- 10:28Speaker 2: cooperate and can't order a pizza and the rest of it.
- 10:31Speaker 2: We have let the muscles of this will be fine
- 10:34Speaker 2: go completely lax.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Well, we're the last generation that we'll be able to
- 10:38Speaker 1: say this because we'll be dead, and that we won't
- 10:40Speaker 1: be anybody left who's had this experience. But the phone
- 10:42Speaker 1: used to ring and you'd go pick it up. You
- 10:46Speaker 1: didn't have the slightest idea who it was or who
- 10:49Speaker 1: they were calling for with other people, and there was
- 10:53Speaker 1: zero nervousness or anticipation about it, like zero A girl
- 10:58Speaker 1: called you.
- 10:58Speaker 2: But that's a different thing.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Now, somebody I know is it's fall phoning me and
- 11:05Speaker 1: I know what the topic matter is. I'm so wow,
- 11:07Speaker 1: is this a good time for a call? I don't know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: this seems really weird.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Okay, here's literally already communicating with them right now.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yep, it's so strange. I don't even know what was
- 11:19Speaker 1: going on in my own brain, but it was some
- 11:21Speaker 1: sort of apprehension.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It's unhealthy as hell, it felt.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It really is like I don't know if I felt attacked,
- 11:28Speaker 1: but it didn't feel a little like, wow, you're really
- 11:31Speaker 1: getting into my space here now with this.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Guys like yeah, oh oh great, Now I've got to
- 11:36Speaker 2: make time for you. Oh wait a minute, you're my friend.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I hold you, dear, I love you all right, I
- 11:41Speaker 2: texted you.
- 11:42Speaker 1: That's a good question. That is so weird. And again
- 11:48Speaker 1: those of us who can only compare the past to
- 11:50Speaker 1: now will be gone and everybody else would just think, well,
- 11:52Speaker 1: this is way it's always been. I've always been scared
- 11:54Speaker 1: to death of any communication with all other people.
- 11:57Speaker 3: You've got your phone me, Why are you calling.
- 12:00Speaker 2: The hell?
- 12:02Speaker 1: Very funny Michael.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Although the kids increasing numbers are putting down their phones.
- 12:10Speaker 2: That is a serious trend among the young. I think
- 12:14Speaker 2: there is at least some hope that the absolutely inescapable,
- 12:18Speaker 2: unhealthiness of the whole smartphone thing is making an impression
- 12:22Speaker 2: on people and they're realizing it.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah. I got one kid that thankfully is perfectly okay with,
- 12:28Speaker 1: you know, walking up to the person at the restaurant
- 12:32Speaker 1: and ordering the food and all this, because I can't
- 12:34Speaker 1: understand why that bothers somebody. But I got another kid
- 12:37Speaker 1: that's like a lot of young people today, it's like,
- 12:38Speaker 1: how can you order for me? I just I don't
- 12:40Speaker 1: want to. I don't feel like I'm in the mood
- 12:42Speaker 1: after yeah, to go up there and say I'd like
- 12:46Speaker 1: a quarter pounds of cheese and fries. Okay. But I
- 12:49Speaker 1: know I know some I know some full on grown
- 12:51Speaker 1: ups with like jobs that pay the rent that really
- 12:56Speaker 1: hate the idea of having a walk up there and
- 12:57Speaker 1: order a cheeseburger. I don't know what we're doing to ourselves.
- 13:01Speaker 1: M hmmm. It's like, did you get attacked once you
- 13:04Speaker 1: ordered cheeseburger and then came over to the.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Registry, just came right over the counter, you mother. These
- 13:16Speaker 2: poor kids will never know what it was like to
- 13:18Speaker 2: make a good crank call.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Well, I guess that's it.
