- 0:00Speaker 1: Today's guest is a WWE Hall of Famer. He's a
- 0:03Speaker 1: member of one of the greatest wrestling families of all time,
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Von Eriks. You may have seen their family story
- 0:10Speaker 1: told recently in the Iron Claw. He's an inspiration. He's
- 0:15Speaker 1: a motivation. He's pretty funny. And I just feel honored
- 0:21Speaker 1: to be able to spend time with him today. Today's
- 0:24Speaker 1: guest is Kevin Von Eriks.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm feeling good. I feel like I can throw this off. Okay.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's not a good thing. Um, yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So you get, cause you were always the barefoot guy.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You were a barefoot guy.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, It sure was. I've got these really big toes,
- 1:01Speaker 2: you know, and once you stub your toe on the
- 1:03Speaker 2: mat a few times, it gets bigger. So at first
- 1:06Speaker 2: I just took my boots off because it felt comfortable
- 1:08Speaker 2: in the ring, you know, just to move around better.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I felt like I could fly. But with the boots,
- 1:14Speaker 2: you know, they fill with sweat. You know, your socks
- 1:19Speaker 2: absorb the sweat and all. They get heavy. I had
- 1:21Speaker 2: some knee surgeries too, you know. But I'll tell you,
- 1:24Speaker 2: I go barefoot all I can.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good for you. It really is, you know. Yeah, well,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I know you moved out to Kauai, was it, or Hawaii? Yeah, Kauai.
- 1:33Speaker 1: That's the barefoot capital of America.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'll bet it is. I'll bet it is. We all
- 1:40Speaker 2: go barefoot out there. I say I'm always kind of
- 1:42Speaker 2: crazy about that. But I just hate for my toes
- 1:46Speaker 2: to touch each other, you know. I've always liked that.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I hated shoes when I was a little kid. I
- 1:50Speaker 2: guess I got old enough to say no, and I
- 1:53Speaker 2: just didn't wear them anymore.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Did you ever wear those toe separator things? You know
- 1:57Speaker 1: what I'm talking about?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Those are great. You know, I wear them in the
- 2:01Speaker 2: river at home, you know, to walk in the river.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But you can walk by a vine and they'll cut
- 2:06Speaker 2: your toe, you know, and it can trip you, you know.
- 2:08Speaker 2: It's a little hazard for those things.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Did you feel like a caveman kind of?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. The good kind of caveman, you know, I
- 2:17Speaker 2: felt like, you know. You're going to drag around a
- 2:19Speaker 2: pound by the hair.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, no domestic disputes or anything.
- 2:22Speaker 2: You know, because, like, you feel the ground. You feel
- 2:25Speaker 2: the earth. It's just something about it. I didn't know
- 2:27Speaker 2: there was anything to it. But Ross tells me, my
- 2:29Speaker 2: son Ross tells me that there's an energy in the
- 2:33Speaker 2: earth that your feet can pick that up, you know.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And I think I've been digging that for a long
- 2:38Speaker 2: time without even knowing it was a thing, you know.
- 2:41Speaker 2: But now I caveman it all the time out in Kauai.
- 2:44Speaker 2: That's the way to live.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I bet it's, well, it's called, yeah, right here
- 2:47Speaker 1: it says it's grounding. Grounding, also known as earthing, is
- 2:50Speaker 1: a wellness practice that involves direct contact with the earth's surface,
- 2:53Speaker 1: like walking barefoot on grass or sand to potentially connect
- 2:56Speaker 1: with the earth's natural electric charge. I think it makes sense,
- 2:59Speaker 1: because even if you look at a tree or a plant,
- 3:01Speaker 1: you don't see them wearing shoes or nothing. Like, that
- 3:04Speaker 1: would be crazy. If you saw a plant, like, wearing shoes,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you'd be like, oh, that guy's, that plant's out of
- 3:08Speaker 1: his mind. Like, plants, you know what I'm saying, they're
- 3:10Speaker 1: connected to the earth, so I think that makes good sense.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Oh, oh, I see what you mean, yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Probably kept you pretty locked in. Um, your family lives,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you live on your family's ranch, right? Or you live
- 3:20Speaker 1: on a ranch here?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Uh, we bought a ranch. We, we sold it. We had,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I lived on my family ranch in Texas. We sold
- 3:26Speaker 2: it about 20 years ago and moved out to Kauai
- 3:28Speaker 2: and built a big place, you know, but we, but
- 3:32Speaker 2: I wanted to give my wife that kind of house,
- 3:34Speaker 2: you know, so everything was in, that was in the
- 3:37Speaker 2: house was something that I really liked about room service
- 3:40Speaker 2: or some hotel overseas, you know, I had a bathtub,
- 3:43Speaker 2: you could do a cannonball in it, you know, splash
- 3:45Speaker 2: it all over the wall, and it had a drain,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and it was just, every room had something like that,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but it was, it's real expensive in Kauai, and I
- 3:53Speaker 2: have a lot of kids, you know, and so they
- 3:56Speaker 2: all go off to their house, and no one wanted
- 3:59Speaker 2: to live in the big house, and so we happened
- 4:03Speaker 2: to trade that to a guy that just happened to
- 4:05Speaker 2: have 27 acres, a waterfall on the land, a big
- 4:08Speaker 2: nice spring, and five houses, you know, from a And
- 4:13Speaker 2: so we traded that house for that 27 acres, and
- 4:17Speaker 2: that's where we are.
- 4:18Speaker 1: No way, just an even trade?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Even trade, yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Dang, you don't see a lot of that anymore.
- 4:22Speaker 2: No, no. I'm glad the guy, I couldn't believe he
- 4:25Speaker 2: did it, really.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Did you have one of those open back verandas or
- 4:29Speaker 1: something it's called maybe in Hawaii? What's that back patio?
- 4:31Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about, those porches?
- 4:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah. And it's just so perfect. Yeah, they
- 4:34Speaker 2: call it a lanai. Oh, God. Yeah, man. At my
- 4:38Speaker 2: daughter's house. Oh, dang. When we stay with her, she's
- 4:41Speaker 2: got a bed set up for me out there, and
- 4:44Speaker 2: so I sleep in the wind.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It's great. Yeah, dude.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You're like that Legend of Zelda character. What's that little
- 4:50Speaker 1: guy's name?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Link.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you're like Link from Zelda. That guy's always in
- 4:54Speaker 1: the wind, man. That guy's a real nature dog.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Zelda?
- 4:57Speaker 1: It's a character from a video game. So the ranch
- 5:03Speaker 1: you have now, all your family can all live there? Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, that is, man. I'm telling you, Theo,
- 5:09Speaker 2: that's like. That's so important to me. You know, I
- 5:12Speaker 2: had a lot of brothers and man, I loved them
- 5:14Speaker 2: so much. We were really close, super close. For sure.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I only knew so much, but you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: I just saw you guys in the ring and stuff
- 5:21Speaker 1: like that. And, you know, there's been a lot of
- 5:22Speaker 1: documentaries and smaller documentaries. There's been the claw movie. So
- 5:25Speaker 1: there's been a lot of, um, you know, references to
- 5:28Speaker 1: you guys for sure.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Your father was, uh, from Texas and he, he was
- 5:34Speaker 1: a wrestler. So I'm assuming that's where you guys all
- 5:36Speaker 1: kind of got into it.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Just even knew about it. Yeah. This is,
- 5:40Speaker 2: you know, It's kind of an ugly turn. I don't
- 5:43Speaker 2: want to bum me out, but my dad was living
- 5:45Speaker 2: up in New York, and we were all living up there,
- 5:47Speaker 2: and I was the baby, but my brother Jackie was
- 5:50Speaker 2: like six years old, and he touched a house trailer
- 5:54Speaker 2: that had a short in it, and it killed him.
- 5:56Speaker 2: It electrocuted him, knocked him out, and he hit a
- 5:59Speaker 2: puddle of frozen water. It was frozen. He drowned under
- 6:02Speaker 2: the ice, you know, and broke my dad's heart. My mother,
- 6:05Speaker 2: you know, just killed him. I can't imagine. I have sons,
- 6:09Speaker 2: you know. I tell you, Theo, I lost my brothers,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and that was hard, but I could not lose a son. Wow.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I couldn't get up. I couldn't stand on my hind legs,
- 6:17Speaker 2: you know.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Did they have to go to therapy and stuff like
- 6:20Speaker 1: that when that first happened? Because I guess that was
- 6:23Speaker 1: your oldest brother.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Did they have therapy back then and stuff like that,
- 6:27Speaker 1: or what did you.
- 6:27Speaker 2: No, no, there was no— my dad was like a rock, though,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know. I couldn't believe he was— he just— He didn't
- 6:36Speaker 2: want my mother to suffer so we wouldn't suffer around her,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but I'm sure my mother suffered. Also, when she got married,
- 6:43Speaker 2: her little brother, David, died of a brain hemorrhage thing,
- 6:51Speaker 2: what he called it, a tumor, a brain tumor. And
- 6:53Speaker 2: so just like a year later, her son dies too.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It was just bang, bang.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I mean, and at those times too, things, I think
- 7:04Speaker 1: there was more, probably tragedy at those times you know
- 7:08Speaker 1: things were you know you'd have a lot of people
- 7:09Speaker 1: had a lot of children uh and a lot of
- 7:12Speaker 1: them working farming and people would get injured a lot
- 7:14Speaker 1: there was just um i think it was a different
- 7:16Speaker 1: time probably when it came to safety and stuff you
- 7:18Speaker 1: know and they'd have loose wires i mean just things
- 7:20Speaker 1: were just less regulated you know that's.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Right it was you know the kind of stuff we
- 7:24Speaker 2: did as kids like shoot i can tell you a
- 7:27Speaker 2: lot of times lucky to be alive you know.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Oh god i've been lit up a couple of times
- 7:31Speaker 1: damn i was walking by a damn crab restaurant and
- 7:35Speaker 1: stepped on an outlet you did just took me down
- 7:38Speaker 1: brother yeah you stepped on an outlet something i don't
- 7:41Speaker 1: know next thing you know i just thought i was
- 7:43Speaker 1: thought the earth was just sucking me into it just
- 7:46Speaker 1: how long were you out i don't know probably 40
- 7:49Speaker 1: seconds maybe wow not long enough to give up i guess.
- 7:54Speaker 2: You didn't have like a uh experience beyond the door
- 7:57Speaker 2: i didn't get anything.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm like, God's not giving me any previews or nothing,
- 8:02Speaker 1: you know? That might be a bad sign, brother. Yeah,
- 8:04Speaker 1: that's true, actually. If you start seeing the light, I'm like, nah, nah. So, yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 1: so your family had that. So your parents had to
- 8:12Speaker 1: deal with that so early, man. Yeah, I guess people
- 8:15Speaker 1: suffered in silence more back then, huh?
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah, people were tough, you know? They were. Well, I
- 8:20Speaker 2: was just going to say, you know, you brought up
- 8:22Speaker 2: the movie, and the movie was like, I heard a
- 8:25Speaker 2: lot of people talk about it. It was like, The
- 8:27Speaker 2: iron claw movie? Yeah, that my dad was really hard
- 8:30Speaker 2: on us when the fact was, you know, that we
- 8:32Speaker 2: were hard on each other. You know, we answered each other.
- 8:35Speaker 2: It was like a brother thing, really. And, you know,
- 8:39Speaker 2: to tell the truth, the suicides and all, that was
- 8:42Speaker 2: not because Fritz made us wrestle or Fritz was a
- 8:46Speaker 2: big monster or anything like that. That was a shame.
- 8:48Speaker 2: My brothers were ashamed. With Kerry was, you know, when
- 8:52Speaker 2: you're in the public eye, You really feel a lot
- 8:55Speaker 2: of pressure. You really do. You don't want to let
- 8:57Speaker 2: those kids down. And when something happens, you do feel
- 9:00Speaker 2: like you really let them down. I don't know. Everybody's
- 9:05Speaker 2: not like this. Sometimes you just can't forgive yourself. And
- 9:08Speaker 2: Kerry just couldn't let it go.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And, yeah, Kerry is one of your brothers. I know
- 9:12Speaker 1: you had David, Kerry, Jack, Chris.
- 9:20Speaker 2: And Mike. And Mike.
- 9:22Speaker 1: God, that's all the boy names they had at the time.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Y'all couldn't have had another brother because what were.
- 9:28Speaker 2: You going to do? I'd have to be a girl.
- 9:29Speaker 1: It would have had to have been a girl by default, man.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Oh, we wanted a girl so bad. Did y'all?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Did your parents?
- 9:36Speaker 2: My whole life, I never knew anything about girls, you know? Oh, shit.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Y'all had enough beautiful hair in that family. At least
- 9:42Speaker 1: you got an idea about how to use it.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Go figure that one. Golly, I know what's with that.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I never took care of myself. I never expected to
- 9:49Speaker 2: live past 50. Oh, I bet. I was having fun
- 9:52Speaker 2: my whole life.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Oh, I bet. But y'all had so much dang hair.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Y'all would have been considered beautiful, tall trans women these days.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Y'all would have been because you guys were ahead of
- 10:04Speaker 1: your time. Even like all the rock bands back then had,
- 10:06Speaker 1: remember Poison? All those bands, they had the big hair.
- 10:10Speaker 2: That's the truth.
- 10:11Speaker 1: The big hair dudes. Y'all had some hairdos. Was that
- 10:15Speaker 1: something like a pride? Was that almost like a lion's
- 10:17Speaker 1: mane type of thing amongst the guys in your household?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Or what was that like for you guys? Because you
- 10:21Speaker 1: guys had some great hair.
- 10:22Speaker 2: No, you know what? It was just laziness to tell
- 10:25Speaker 2: the truth. I mean, you know, I cut it to
- 10:28Speaker 2: keep it out of my eyes, you know, but then
- 10:30Speaker 2: I cut my own hair, you know, because I'm not
- 10:32Speaker 2: paying a couple of money. I can tell, dude.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I cut my own shit.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I can't see the back, you know. I
- 10:37Speaker 2: don't have a mullet on purpose, you know. But, But
- 10:41Speaker 2: I can cut this up here, you know.
- 10:46Speaker 1: So your dad, I do want to know a little
- 10:47Speaker 1: bit more about him. So you said that the film
- 10:50Speaker 1: kind of portrayed him as being more of a stickler.
- 10:53Speaker 1: But what was he like? Was he a businessman? Was
- 10:55Speaker 1: he quiet? I mean, I guess he wasn't quiet because
- 10:58Speaker 1: I could see like his wrestling persona. But was his
- 11:01Speaker 1: home persona like, well, I guess what was he like
- 11:03Speaker 1: as a father? And what was he like as a businessman?
- 11:05Speaker 2: But let me tell you, my dad was like a
- 11:08Speaker 2: mountain of a man.
- 11:09Speaker 1: He was.
- 11:11Speaker 2: He was really a considerate, full of love God, but
- 11:14Speaker 2: I mean, he was serious. And when he would, he
- 11:17Speaker 2: wouldn't say anything. Like, you know, before you go to
- 11:20Speaker 2: sleep at night, you think, oh man, I wish I'd
- 11:21Speaker 2: have said that. Wish I'd have thought of that. Well,
- 11:23Speaker 2: he thought of it right then. And he would say
- 11:26Speaker 2: it right then.
- 11:27Speaker 1: At night, you mean?
- 11:28Speaker 2: No, I mean like whenever the subject came up. Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 2: whenever he thought of it, it was just right there.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I thought, man, perfect answer. You know, but I mean,
- 11:36Speaker 2: he was the president. Okay, you know that movie, The
- 11:38Speaker 2: Iron Claw, where Fritz says, The NWA always wanted to
- 11:43Speaker 2: screw me, you know, kind of like, but the truth
- 11:44Speaker 2: is he was the NWA. He was the president, you know.
- 11:48Speaker 2: And he was the other wrestlers, I mean, world champions.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I mean, when my dad came in the room, I mean,
- 11:55Speaker 2: they were like rolling on their backs like dogs. They
- 11:59Speaker 2: respected him? Well, I mean, yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Are they feared him because of his business acumen or just?
- 12:05Speaker 2: I think it was his business acumen. I really do.
- 12:07Speaker 2: And the way he shaded himself, he didn't. ever pop off.
- 12:11Speaker 2: He didn't ever brag. He always had the accurate thing
- 12:14Speaker 2: to say, not too much emotion at all, just business.
- 12:19Speaker 2: And people respected that. I think in the wrestling business,
- 12:23Speaker 2: we have a lot of personalities, you know, the big egos.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And sometimes these guys don't want to do something, you know.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But my dad had the respect, and it made a
- 12:34Speaker 2: great business. I think you have to have that in you. Myself, man,
- 12:39Speaker 2: You can talk me out of anything, you know. Oh,
- 12:41Speaker 2: is that all the money you have? Well, I'll take less.
- 12:44Speaker 2: You know, I know why I'm like that. Not like
- 12:47Speaker 2: my dad at all. He was great.
- 12:49Speaker 1: He was a business guy.
- 12:50Speaker 2: He was, yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 1: And what was he like with your mom? Like, do
- 12:53Speaker 1: you have a nice memory of them being together? Like,
- 12:55Speaker 1: something like a moment that you remember that was, that
- 12:58Speaker 1: meant something to you?
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess so. One time I was in the den,
- 13:06Speaker 2: and my mom and dad were, kind of whispering, and
- 13:09Speaker 2: they disappeared. And my brothers were really going. So they
- 13:11Speaker 2: went into the little study there, I guess, to talk.
- 13:15Speaker 2: And I thought, they've been in there a long time.
- 13:17Speaker 2: So I took the little coat hanger and straightened it
- 13:20Speaker 2: out and pushed it in the door and opened it up.
- 13:24Speaker 2: You know, they were at it. And I'm like, oh, man.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So as a little boy, I thought, why are they
- 13:31Speaker 2: so mad? Why are they so mad about it? It
- 13:34Speaker 2: sounded like they were having fun.
- 13:38Speaker 1: It sounded like a two out of three falls, huh?
- 13:41Speaker 2: Well, I just felt like I needed to go in there,
- 13:43Speaker 2: you know, and break this up, whatever it is, you know,
- 13:46Speaker 2: and it was, that was kind of one of those moments,
- 13:50Speaker 2: I guess. Break this up. You bring a whistle in there? Yeah.
- 13:53Speaker 2: That's hilarious. Break. She needs air.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That's really something you remember, though?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember that, trying to think of that beautiful moment.
- 14:00Speaker 2: That's what came up, you know? So everybody was wrestling, huh?
- 14:05Speaker 2: I guess so, yeah. Wow.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Did you feel like you had to be a wrestler
- 14:12Speaker 1: in your family? Like, was it?
- 14:15Speaker 2: Well, you know, the truth of it is, my dad
- 14:18Speaker 2: didn't want us to wrestle, you know. In fact, you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: he was so, his finger was stuck, you know, and
- 14:24Speaker 2: his hands didn't move right.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, he probably walked around like a damn crossing guard.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Oh, God, he was. And his lower back and knees.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And so, you know, I actually said to my sons,
- 14:36Speaker 2: you don't want to do this, I promise, you know.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Here we are in Hawaii, and I can't even run
- 14:40Speaker 2: on the beach. And I was a high hurdler, you know.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I used to high jump over my head, you know,
- 14:45Speaker 2: and I loved to move. But a day comes, you know,
- 14:48Speaker 2: where you traded that, traded that away, you know. So
- 14:51Speaker 2: I told my boys, you don't want this, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 2: you really don't. But you can't tell them that, you know.
- 14:58Speaker 2: They were just like I was. I wanted to do
- 15:00Speaker 2: what my dad did. I thought he was great. So
- 15:03Speaker 2: did my brothers, you know. We thought. Everything he did
- 15:07Speaker 2: was great, we thought. That's why I wanted to do
- 15:09Speaker 2: it like that. I'm sure my sons are thinking the
- 15:12Speaker 2: same stuff.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Well, I think there's nothing more. There's something inside of
- 15:17Speaker 1: a son you just want to make your dad proud.
- 15:18Speaker 1: You want him to look at you and, yeah, just
- 15:22Speaker 1: feel a sense of pride.
- 15:23Speaker 2: That goes deep. Yeah.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I mean, I think that's probably the deepest thing that
- 15:27Speaker 1: there is.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Me too.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I really don't think there's anything less than you. you
- 15:32Speaker 1: ask anybody, do you feel like your dad's proud of you?
- 15:34Speaker 1: It's like that, you know, it really takes them to
- 15:36Speaker 1: a place when they're thinking about that or answering that,
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Were there, was people using steroids and stuff back then?
- 15:43Speaker 1: I used to use steroids in high school. Was it
- 15:45Speaker 1: a thing when you guys were growing up or no?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It sure was. They, you know, it was,
- 15:53Speaker 2: I didn't really ever want to really get into that,
- 15:57Speaker 2: you know, and, because we had naturally good bodies, but,
- 16:01Speaker 2: My brother, Kerry, was a bodybuilder. You know, he'd peel
- 16:05Speaker 2: the skin off the chicken and eat the rice with
- 16:07Speaker 2: no soy sauce on it. I'd never do that, man.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I mean, I eat Twinkies, chocolate milk, five or six
- 16:13Speaker 2: glasses a day, really. I love chocolate milk sugar. My
- 16:16Speaker 2: favorite food is sugar.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Oh, I'll eat them two grams of sugar, dude.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Me too, man. I mean, if it tastes good, then
- 16:23Speaker 2: my body must want it.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah, because when I was growing up, yeah, he's so fit, huh? Yeah.
- 16:27Speaker 1: He was probably the most romantically fit of you guys, huh?
- 16:30Speaker 2: He was. He was a little kid. He was the
- 16:34Speaker 2: girls all loved him. The teachers loved him.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Damn straight man loved him.
- 16:39Speaker 2: He was.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I mean, look, if you can go further enough past
- 16:43Speaker 1: women where you get straight men to love you. You
- 16:46Speaker 1: could have straight, I mean, this is, you know, in
- 16:49Speaker 1: rural areas, you could have men that are, were like,
- 16:52Speaker 1: no gays, but then they'll go and watch and then
- 16:55Speaker 1: just adorn this gentleman. I mean, you know, those are
- 16:59Speaker 1: the times kind of, but yeah, Barry, he was, he
- 17:01Speaker 1: was super fit.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Did, um, I'll see that picture. I remember he was
- 17:07Speaker 2: a little boy. He was so cute, but he said, uh, we,
- 17:10Speaker 2: we went in the barn one day, there's a big
- 17:12Speaker 2: old wasp in this up there, a red wasp, you
- 17:14Speaker 2: know how they, stuck the ceiling up there and so
- 17:18Speaker 2: you know they're in the barn we're all alone and
- 17:20Speaker 2: so uh so we uh you know those things that
- 17:23Speaker 2: you should uh gift wraps the long tubes they come
- 17:27Speaker 2: in the christmas present yeah so we lit one up
- 17:30Speaker 2: said carry hold it under those those those red ants
- 17:33Speaker 2: but remember to hold your breath because they can't sting
- 17:36Speaker 2: you if you're holding your breath you know and so
- 17:38Speaker 2: but so don't breathe and so we light it up
- 17:42Speaker 2: and we're watching them go in there you know and
- 17:44Speaker 2: They drop all on him and he runs out crying.
- 17:47Speaker 2: We said, stupid, we told you not to breathe. And
- 17:51Speaker 2: he said, it's hard to hold your breath when you're crying.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Dude, that is a great, it is hard to hold
- 17:58Speaker 1: your breath when you're crying.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he was right.
- 18:01Speaker 1: My favorite, when we were kids, we used to pick
- 18:03Speaker 1: on each other at dinner so bad. And the best
- 18:05Speaker 1: part was to get somebody to cry when they had
- 18:07Speaker 1: a mouthful of food, right? because they couldn't swallow because
- 18:10Speaker 1: they were crying so hard so the food just got
- 18:13Speaker 1: it'd be like it just got stuck in the mouth
- 18:16Speaker 1: you know just that shit was so fun having siblings
- 18:19Speaker 1: was so much fun huh did you guys do like
- 18:22Speaker 1: halloween and stuff together any like did y'all do that yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah you mean go out and throw eggs at people
- 18:27Speaker 2: and stuff and yeah and we did all that yeah
- 18:31Speaker 2: and uh.
- 18:33Speaker 1: And what was like birthday parties and stuff like at
- 18:35Speaker 1: your house? Because with so many kids, would you guys
- 18:37Speaker 1: combine some of them or everybody got their own?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Well, we had a lot of boys, you know, a
- 18:40Speaker 2: lot of us in our house. And I remember like
- 18:43Speaker 2: ladies saying, oh, it smells like boy in here. And,
- 18:46Speaker 2: you know, because they smell like boys, I guess. But
- 18:51Speaker 2: I do remember that it was really hard for mama
- 18:53Speaker 2: to get babysitters because like we were really hard on them,
- 18:58Speaker 2: you know, just playing with them and stuff. You know,
- 19:00Speaker 2: we'd kind of make a joke out of it and
- 19:02Speaker 2: They'd be crying, and they're never going to watch these
- 19:05Speaker 2: kids again. I was climbing the walls and stuff like that.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Oh, you need Abdullah the Butcher to be your babysitter,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I feel like.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Probably so.
- 19:13Speaker 1: You need somebody big. At that time in wrestling, were
- 19:18Speaker 1: steroids a popular thing? I remember when I was in
- 19:20Speaker 1: high school, people would use Test 200. But even growing
- 19:23Speaker 1: up in Texas, did people even know that steroids were
- 19:26Speaker 1: bad for you, or was it just a medicine that
- 19:29Speaker 1: was kind of common in wrestling, do you feel like?
- 19:32Speaker 2: Well, doctors would give it to you. I mean, I
- 19:37Speaker 2: had trouble gaining weight when I was like— well, my whole
- 19:40Speaker 2: life I've had trouble gaining weight. And so I took
- 19:45Speaker 2: Dianabol when I was in high school, but I took
- 19:47Speaker 2: one a day for like— two weeks and then lay
- 19:52Speaker 2: off for two weeks and then take it again for
- 19:54Speaker 2: two weeks and lay off for two weeks. And that
- 19:56Speaker 2: was what kind of that was a little boy pill.
- 20:00Speaker 2: That's what that was for little boys that weren't getting puberty.
- 20:02Speaker 2: And then back then, like you say, there weren't all
- 20:04Speaker 2: these rules and all. Steroids weren't necessarily a dirty word.
- 20:10Speaker 2: But doctors did give them to people like after surgery
- 20:13Speaker 2: and things like that to improve their appetite and things.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And it makes a difference. But if you don't lift weights,
- 20:19Speaker 2: if you don't really have a strict regimen, then it's
- 20:22Speaker 2: just going to give you pimples on your back and
- 20:25Speaker 2: make your hair fall out and your breath stink and
- 20:27Speaker 2: all that stuff, you know. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 1: If you're not, yeah. If you're just shooting steroids and
- 20:32Speaker 1: then just watching, you know, I Dream of Jeannie or
- 20:36Speaker 1: shit like that, yeah. your life's going to fall apart.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Yeah, look at those guys that get the injections to
- 20:43Speaker 2: make their muscles look big. Can you believe? Have you
- 20:45Speaker 2: seen some of these guys? They don't even work out.
- 20:48Speaker 2: They go in, they get silicone injections for muscles. I
- 20:52Speaker 2: got to tell you, Theo, muscles are nothing. You want
- 20:58Speaker 2: to know you're in wrestling. I would lift weights because
- 21:02Speaker 2: I wanted to be a better wrestler. I want my
- 21:03Speaker 2: kick out. I want to push my man off. I
- 21:05Speaker 2: want to be able to bench, you know, A lot,
- 21:08Speaker 2: because it's important. But, I mean, to look pretty in
- 21:14Speaker 2: the mirror, I mean, that's just a few shades short
- 21:17Speaker 2: of fruity, if you ask me. Oh, yeah. I mean,
- 21:21Speaker 2: look at this guy. That's the stuff. That's what I'm
- 21:23Speaker 2: talking about. What in the hell is that? No, I mean.
- 21:27Speaker 1: The guy looks like he's stealing from Target.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Really? What is that guy doing? What is that guy doing? Yeah.
- 21:40Speaker 1: That guy looks like a little, um, and I'm gonna
- 21:46Speaker 1: take that joke out. That was, that's offensive. I just
- 21:49Speaker 1: wanted to make you guys laugh. Um, which, uh, yeah,
- 21:54Speaker 1: we used to use them. I'm trying to think we,
- 21:56Speaker 1: and we used to me, I just like, we got
- 21:58Speaker 1: in and we were weightlifting pretty heavy and it was
- 22:00Speaker 1: fun using them cause it definitely made things easier. You know,
- 22:03Speaker 1: that was fun. And you, I felt, you felt way more, invigorated,
- 22:08Speaker 1: you know.
- 22:08Speaker 2: For sure. What kind did you do?
- 22:10Speaker 1: We were doing like test 200 and then people would,
- 22:13Speaker 1: some people would do Deanna ball. I never got that.
- 22:15Speaker 1: We just would go on spring break and get test
- 22:17Speaker 1: 200 or some people worked on farms and we get
- 22:19Speaker 1: test 200 from them, you know, testosterone or something.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, some of that stuff, I mean, I have
- 22:25Speaker 2: to say that some of that stuff, the guys, you
- 22:29Speaker 2: could see a veterinary use only on the box, you
- 22:32Speaker 2: know what I mean? Equine this and all.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Oh, some of you'd open up and it'd be like,
- 22:37Speaker 1: Even when you took the top off, you're like, shit,
- 22:39Speaker 1: that ain't for us.
- 22:40Speaker 2: That's what it was. I was never into that because
- 22:46Speaker 2: you really can kill yourself with it. It messes your
- 22:48Speaker 2: whole body up.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Was it popular in the sport when you got into it?
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'm just trying to wonder what the times were like
- 22:54Speaker 1: and how men felt like they had to. Theo, man.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Your family was in good shape overall, but some of
- 23:04Speaker 1: the shapes in wrestling weren't. It wasn't as much about
- 23:08Speaker 1: the shape. You know, there was a lot of guys
- 23:10Speaker 1: out there that were just big, tough guys.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Well, we wanted to put the best show on television
- 23:17Speaker 2: we could do. And if that meant take steroids too,
- 23:20Speaker 2: we didn't care. I mean, priority one was our body. Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I mean, was delivering that punishment. You know, we moved
- 23:29Speaker 2: quick and exploded. You've seen our wrestling. It was different.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Oh, man, Kerry was so– it's unbelievable watching him.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Well, we just, that's the thing we wanted to, and
- 23:37Speaker 2: that was the attitude back then. If the guys we're
- 23:40Speaker 2: wrestling are going to do steroids, well, then it's only
- 23:42Speaker 2: fair that we do them too. Now, we didn't, don't
- 23:45Speaker 2: get me wrong, it's like, it's not like we were
- 23:48Speaker 2: really into it. Kerry went down to the University of
- 23:51Speaker 2: Houston and was still in the discus for Coach Tellez
- 23:53Speaker 2: down there of U of H. And the stuff he
- 23:58Speaker 2: learned down there was all this like expert stuff about
- 24:01Speaker 2: weightlifting and weight events and all, you know what I mean?
- 24:05Speaker 2: they would take a cigarette and puff a cigarette right
- 24:08Speaker 2: before they'd throw. Uh-uh. Yeah. Something in the nicotine would
- 24:11Speaker 2: kick the muscles in, you know, kick your body. It
- 24:14Speaker 2: would give them just a little edge, just a little more.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I love that. Or they drink ice-cold water before you
- 24:21Speaker 2: have a go-max on your bench. It helps just a
- 24:24Speaker 2: little bit.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You hear that, Coach Hester? Kurt Hester, he's a speed
- 24:27Speaker 1: and strength coach of mine. I think he coaches the
- 24:29Speaker 1: University of Houston now. But I'm going to make sure
- 24:32Speaker 1: he hears that. I'm realizing that anywhere worth going is

- 27:15Speaker 1: guys were, because didn't Kerry almost throw the disc? Didn't
- 27:17Speaker 1: he almost go to the Olympics?
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:19Speaker 1: But the Olympics got canceled that year because what year
- 27:21Speaker 1: was it? Didn't Johnson cancel the Olympics?
- 27:24Speaker 2: 80. It was the 80. No, wait. Yeah, 1980. That's
- 27:28Speaker 2: what it was.
- 27:28Speaker 1: The president canceled the Olympics, right? We didn't go?
- 27:31Speaker 2: No, it was that thing. I believe there was an
- 27:35Speaker 2: airliner flying over Korea and a Russian shot it down.
- 27:39Speaker 2: It was over a sensitive area. And I believe it
- 27:43Speaker 2: was Jimmy Carter. Oh, Jimmy Carter. Yeah. And we didn't
- 27:46Speaker 2: do the Olympics that year. Yeah.
- 27:48Speaker 1: But he would have competed. Kerry would have competed.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Well, you know... I think he would have, but I'm
- 27:54Speaker 2: not really sure what, because they would have had to
- 27:56Speaker 2: have the, I think he went to Champaign for those
- 28:01Speaker 2: three games. Yeah, Nationals. But I don't think he went
- 28:04Speaker 2: to the other, they even took it that far. I'm
- 28:07Speaker 2: not sure. I'm not sure how it went.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Which one of you guys was kind of the leader
- 28:11Speaker 1: of you guys' brothers? And I know sometimes it goes
- 28:14Speaker 1: by age, right? Because there's always a.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I was the big brother, you know, and no doubt
- 28:18Speaker 2: about that. But my brother, Dave, had a real responsibility streak.
- 28:23Speaker 2: He was just, my dad would come to him and say, okay,
- 28:25Speaker 2: I want this fence to be, I want it to
- 28:27Speaker 2: go down there 200 yards, and I want a good post,
- 28:30Speaker 2: or I want it double fenced, and I want everything
- 28:33Speaker 2: just right. And he'd tell Dave. And so Dave would
- 28:36Speaker 2: tell me and Kerry what to do. He's the foreman. Yeah,
- 28:39Speaker 2: he's the foreman. And so it kind of worked that
- 28:41Speaker 2: way in wrestling, too. And he was good on the microphone, too. Oh, yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 2: It's important. You've got to be good on the mic.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Was there a time where all of you guys were
- 28:51Speaker 1: wrestling at the same time?
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yeah, just briefly, it was. Man, that was so much fun, too,
- 28:57Speaker 2: because we never got to go to Japan together. Dave
- 28:59Speaker 2: and I went to Japan together. Carrie and I went
- 29:01Speaker 2: to Japan. Never together, though. But when we could all
- 29:04Speaker 2: three to be together, just for the, when we first
- 29:07Speaker 2: started out, you know, for that first year, we could,
- 29:10Speaker 2: all three of us could go to towns. We got
- 29:12Speaker 2: so much fun, man. We always would stop. We'd scuba
- 29:15Speaker 2: dive all the way there. You know, if there's clear water,
- 29:18Speaker 2: if it's just, a river or something, we'd dive in
- 29:21Speaker 2: and swim. It was just a.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Oh, along the way?
- 29:24Speaker 2: Just, yeah. We had fun all day. And we wouldn't
- 29:27Speaker 2: even go to the dressing room. We'd get dressed out
- 29:29Speaker 2: in the woods where the swimming hole was, and we'd
- 29:31Speaker 2: get our wrestling stuff on, go right to the show,
- 29:33Speaker 2: get in the rain, come back out and do our stuff,
- 29:35Speaker 2: you know. We had it down. We had fun. And
- 29:39Speaker 2: we got to leech.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Your tights, brother.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Hey, don't call it that. Yeah.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Uh, were you all, do you all train together at
- 29:48Speaker 1: home at a certain place? Like what was that kind of?
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a gym outside of the house and, uh,
- 29:54Speaker 2: on an adjacent property. And, uh, And I'm probably the
- 29:58Speaker 2: cause of all the pressure because I would put up
- 30:02Speaker 2: Vince Lombardi posters all the time for myself. I wanted
- 30:06Speaker 2: to be the best I could be, and that was
- 30:08Speaker 2: what it was like to live in my home. Back
- 30:09Speaker 2: then it was like we lifted weights three times a week,
- 30:14Speaker 2: but we ran, we swam. Everything was about getting better
- 30:18Speaker 2: because I wanted to play in the NFL. And Kerry, well,
- 30:25Speaker 2: Kerry just wanted to wrestle. and Dave wanted to wrestle,
- 30:28Speaker 2: but I was a football player. And so that's what
- 30:33Speaker 2: it was all about. It's just do your best. The
- 30:36Speaker 2: quitters never quit. Winners never quit. Quitters never win. You know,
- 30:40Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. I had posters everywhere on the gym,
- 30:43Speaker 2: and we'd spot each other and push each other and
- 30:45Speaker 2: call each other sissies if we couldn't do it, you know.
- 30:47Speaker 2: I mean, we would spit on each other. You know,
- 30:50Speaker 2: we were savages, and we wanted to get as good
- 30:53Speaker 2: as we could be. And when we We wrestled. It
- 30:57Speaker 2: was hard. We were rough because anything worth doing is
- 31:02Speaker 2: worth doing right. We wanted to be successful. It was
- 31:05Speaker 2: not to add for us, but it meant just go
- 31:08Speaker 2: all out, completely commit. And that means every day. On Wednesdays,
- 31:13Speaker 2: we run 400 meter, one lap around the tracks, 400 meter.
- 31:19Speaker 2: We'd run five 400s on Wednesdays. We'd time them. And
- 31:23Speaker 2: Carrie and I, We're both high jumpers. Kerry high jumped, too.
- 31:27Speaker 2: And we could bench. Kerry and I figured as long
- 31:30Speaker 2: as we could bench twice our weight and high jump
- 31:32Speaker 2: over our heads, then we would always be in shape. And, well, yeah,
- 31:37Speaker 2: for knee surgeries and all, you can't do that again.
- 31:39Speaker 2: But that was the theory we wanted to go with.
- 31:42Speaker 2: And Dave was the same. Dave didn't work out in
- 31:44Speaker 2: the gym as hard as we did, you know, but
- 31:46Speaker 2: Kerry and I did. Everything we did was to exhaustion.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And we were kind of nauseated. When you think you're
- 31:53Speaker 2: about to throw up, now you've done enough. Dang. We
- 31:55Speaker 2: really did, man. It was all the way. I quit
- 31:58Speaker 2: way before that, I realize. Yeah. Well, everybody does, man.
- 32:03Speaker 2: If you want to look different, you have to do
- 32:04Speaker 2: what everybody else doesn't do, you know what I mean? Yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Fight through that.
- 32:09Speaker 1: And were all your brothers kind of subscribed to that
- 32:11Speaker 1: same mentality, or did some of them come along with
- 32:14Speaker 1: that mentality just because they were your brothers?
- 32:19Speaker 2: No.
- 32:19Speaker 1: No. Does that make any sense?
- 32:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I guess, yeah, nobody was just along for
- 32:23Speaker 2: the ride.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I think they were all pretty much just wanting to
- 32:26Speaker 2: be like, me, Dave, and Kerry wanted to be like dad. But,
- 32:29Speaker 2: you know, things got kind of different when we were kids.
- 32:34Speaker 2: When I was a junior in high school, sophomore in
- 32:37Speaker 2: high school, my mom and dad were going to get
- 32:38Speaker 2: a divorce. You know, and my dad was going to
- 32:41Speaker 2: move out. That was my freshman year is what it was.
- 32:46Speaker 2: And I came into the kitchen one day, my mom
- 32:48Speaker 2: and dad are talking, and dad said, Kev, I'm going
- 32:53Speaker 2: to move to Dallas and just get an apartment, and
- 32:57Speaker 2: y'all are going to stay here, and it's going to
- 32:58Speaker 2: be just great. Y'all go to school and come see
- 33:01Speaker 2: me on the weekends. I said, well, y'all talking about
- 33:03Speaker 2: a divorce? And he said, yeah, son, we are.
- 33:07Speaker 1: He's trying to describe it to you without saying we're
- 33:09Speaker 1: getting divorced.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I said, well, I want to go with you, dad.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And Dave heard me, and Kerry came in and said,
- 33:14Speaker 2: we do too, Dad. We want to go with you.
- 33:16Speaker 2: And so my mom's going to be there alone, it
- 33:19Speaker 2: looks like, you know. But I was the mediator with that,
- 33:23Speaker 2: you know, and they kind of worked it out. But
- 33:27Speaker 2: with the deaths, you know, my mother was kind of
- 33:30Speaker 2: damaged inside. It made her like she was suffering so much.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You know, with Dave, she was tough. I mean, her
- 33:38Speaker 2: own little brother and Jackie. But then with Dave, she
- 33:40Speaker 2: toughed it out, you know. But then baby Mike, he
- 33:44Speaker 2: was the baby of our family. Chris was even younger,
- 33:47Speaker 2: but Mike was the... We'd been traveling around, and we
- 33:50Speaker 2: weren't home that much, so Mike was the baby.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Traveling with wrestling? You guys had been traveling with wrestling?
- 33:56Speaker 2: Wrestling, yeah. See, Dave and... The movie doesn't have this,
- 33:59Speaker 2: but Dave and Carrie were both married. And Carrie had...
- 34:02Speaker 2: Dave had a daughter, died a crib death, but Carrie
- 34:06Speaker 2: had two daughters.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Holly and Lacey and their beautiful sweet daughter, they spend
- 34:12Speaker 2: every Christmas with us. And we told you I got
- 34:16Speaker 2: the big house for all to have our Christmases in.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Because family is just like we were saying, there's nothing
- 34:23Speaker 2: more important than family to me, or to any thinking man.
- 34:28Speaker 2: And then again, there's the being wrestlers and our brothers.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I mean, my dad's a bad guy, you know, and
- 34:35Speaker 2: they're booing him. it kind of makes you feel like
- 34:37Speaker 2: it's us against the world. These people are booing my dad.
- 34:39Speaker 2: If they hate him, then we hate them too.
- 34:44Speaker 1: What was that about? Because at what point did the
- 34:49Speaker 1: audience turn on your father? Or just part of the... No,
- 34:52Speaker 1: he was like the perfect bad guy. He was a Nazi.
- 34:56Speaker 2: And after my brother Jackie died, and they're up in
- 34:59Speaker 2: New York, he was like, his wrestling changed. He was different.
- 35:03Speaker 2: He was wild inside. And I think it was like
- 35:07Speaker 2: he wanted to just take it out on people. And
- 35:11Speaker 2: it showed in the ring. Theo, when the wrestlers would
- 35:15Speaker 2: come out of the dressing room, get in their cars,
- 35:17Speaker 2: the fans would stand around and boo from a distance.
- 35:20Speaker 2: But when my dad came out to get in his car, silence.
- 35:24Speaker 2: They were like, fear. It was like fear. He might
- 35:28Speaker 2: run over here.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, it was such an exciting time back then
- 35:34Speaker 1: when wrestlers would come into the ring. I mean, it
- 35:36Speaker 1: was just, God, I remember being a kid and we
- 35:39Speaker 1: would lose our fucking minds and just beat the shit
- 35:42Speaker 1: out of our sister. The second the fucking wrestling program
- 35:45Speaker 1: came on, we would beat the shit out of our sister.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 35:49Speaker 1: For no fucking reason.
- 35:51Speaker 2: I guess she just couldn't get used to the schedule
- 35:55Speaker 2: and no problem to stay away at that. A time
- 35:58Speaker 2: of day or something.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Oh, if it was more than an hour broadcast, she
- 36:01Speaker 1: knew she was in for it.
- 36:02Speaker 2: I'll tell you that.
- 36:05Speaker 1: You hear a lot of stories about how wrestling was like,
- 36:07Speaker 1: you know, we had to wrestle one night, and then
- 36:09Speaker 1: the next night you had to wrestle again. Did you
- 36:12Speaker 1: go on road trips like that where it was like
- 36:13Speaker 1: a few days at a time? Was it weeks and months?
- 36:16Speaker 1: I mean, what was it really like back then?
- 36:18Speaker 2: In 1984, I wrestled 386 times. God. And a lot
- 36:23Speaker 2: of those were triple shots, double shots on— On Sundays,
- 36:27Speaker 2: you know, we'd rest TV shows or we'd do two
- 36:30Speaker 2: or three times. But after the started to be the deaths,
- 36:35Speaker 2: you know, then I would have to, my dad had
- 36:39Speaker 2: it working. Dave could sell out a building. Kerry could
- 36:42Speaker 2: sell out a building. I could sell out. But Mike
- 36:44Speaker 2: was not quite there, you know. And so when Dave died,
- 36:49Speaker 2: either Kerry or me had to fill his slot, you know,
- 36:53Speaker 2: work in another town. And that was hard, but. then
- 36:57Speaker 2: carry with the foot now i've got two slots to
- 37:00Speaker 2: fill you know and so i was wrestling three times
- 37:02Speaker 2: a day almost a couple times a week but i
- 37:05Speaker 2: was wrestling every day.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Was it an option to take take those some of
- 37:10Speaker 1: the slots off the schedule or did you guys feel
- 37:12Speaker 1: like as a family we have to fill this did
- 37:14Speaker 1: you feel like your dad was like we have to
- 37:17Speaker 1: fill this or it was just that's what you did well.
- 37:20Speaker 2: I gotta tell you we you know after the deaths
- 37:23Speaker 2: we were uh we were down, you know, and we
- 37:26Speaker 2: sure didn't feel like getting back in that ring, but
- 37:29Speaker 2: you know, you have to, because after death, there's all
- 37:31Speaker 2: the publicity and dad's saying, you know, it's been a week,
- 37:35Speaker 2: it's been two weeks or whatever. But I mean, there
- 37:37Speaker 2: were times when we said, dad, I can't do it yet.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Can't do it. You know, but he did want us
- 37:42Speaker 2: to get in that ring. It was, but it was
- 37:43Speaker 2: a family business. I don't hold it against him. I understand. But, uh,
- 37:49Speaker 2: it was, uh, brutal to make yourself do that. I mean, the,
- 37:55Speaker 2: what's on your mind is love and brotherhood and seeing
- 37:58Speaker 2: him again in heaven. But you want to project, I'm
- 38:01Speaker 2: going to kick that guy's ass. You know, it's kind of,
- 38:03Speaker 2: you're torn, you know. A lot of life's like that, huh? Yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 2: It's like having two feelings at the same time.
- 38:10Speaker 1: It's like, especially with death, because it's like somebody's gone,
- 38:15Speaker 1: but they're the one that's gone, but you're the one
- 38:17Speaker 1: that hurts. And, and you don't even know what they're
- 38:21Speaker 1: feeling like. And you almost don't want to, like mourn
- 38:25Speaker 1: too much because then it's like, are you just using
- 38:27Speaker 1: the morning for yourself? It's like all that kind of
- 38:29Speaker 1: stuff has always hit me.
- 38:31Speaker 2: I know. You wake up in the morning and there's
- 38:33Speaker 2: nothing else. You can't think about anything else. Man, I'm
- 38:38Speaker 2: old enough. I can tell you a little something now.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I never wanted to endorse marijuana or put it over because,
- 38:45Speaker 2: you know, I had a position, you know, when I
- 38:49Speaker 2: would wake up in the morning, I could not think
- 38:51Speaker 2: of anything else. That's all I thought about. And if
- 38:53Speaker 2: I smoked a joint, I could daydream. I could think
- 38:57Speaker 2: of something else, you know, and I, I had to,
- 39:00Speaker 2: I was grateful for that stuff. I mean, it helped me. Well,
- 39:04Speaker 2: I'm sure, especially out in, uh, Kauai, it was probably. Oh, sure. Yeah.
- 39:09Speaker 2: I was helping everybody. Well, so I had my knee replaced,
- 39:12Speaker 2: you know, and, uh, it didn't go very well. It's
- 39:15Speaker 2: kind of, I rehabbed it too quick. See, in college,
- 39:18Speaker 2: when you have a knee surgery, you, you fight like
- 39:20Speaker 2: hell to get it back, you know? And, uh, Well,
- 39:23Speaker 2: I got out there and I got a new replacement,
- 39:25Speaker 2: but I'm a senior citizen. So instead, I shouldn't have
- 39:29Speaker 2: rehabbed it like that. you know. I was doing flips
- 39:32Speaker 2: off the cliff with the boys and it knocked something.
- 39:35Speaker 2: I smelled glue on my breath. I thought, oh, that
- 39:37Speaker 2: can't be good. Because they just glue in there.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Really?
- 39:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:41Speaker 1: And you think some of it came up your bloodstream
- 39:42Speaker 1: and you could taste it a little bit?
- 39:43Speaker 2: I tasted it. Yeah, I tasted it. That's bad. Anyway, so. Damn,
- 39:48Speaker 2: they're using damn glue?
- 39:49Speaker 1: Well.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Yeah, they do. They use glue. Well, shit, we could
- 39:53Speaker 2: use glue. I mean, they're power tools. Really, I mean,
- 39:58Speaker 2: working on you, they got to drill the whole deal.
- 40:00Speaker 2: They hide it from you. Yeah, with that anesthesia, dude.
- 40:04Speaker 1: They just bring in a couple of Cub Scouts in
- 40:06Speaker 1: there and they're doing damn woodwork on you in there.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Playing.
- 40:15Speaker 1: With wrestling, did you have to be as tough at
- 40:17Speaker 1: the wrestling part as you did at the partying part? Like,
- 40:21Speaker 1: there seemed to be this thing when I, when I
- 40:23Speaker 1: look back on like wrestling and a lot of the stories, um,
- 40:26Speaker 1: especially coming up out of like the seventies, eighties, nineties,
- 40:29Speaker 1: where not only did you have to prove yourself in
- 40:32Speaker 1: the ring, that you were the toughest guy, that you
- 40:34Speaker 1: were able to do the matches, but then you had
- 40:36Speaker 1: to prove yourself again, like at the drinking table. Was
- 40:39Speaker 1: that part of the culture as much as.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Oh man, it was, that was an easy part for
- 40:44Speaker 2: us because neither, none of us really liked the taste
- 40:47Speaker 2: of booze. You know, we, uh, I mean, I'll have
- 40:51Speaker 2: a drink or even two, but I'm done. I can't
- 40:54Speaker 2: drink six of anything, you know. I mean, a lot
- 40:57Speaker 2: of people can, but I think that was a big
- 40:59Speaker 2: thing for us. We never did get that big stomach,
- 41:02Speaker 2: I guess. A lot of my friends, you know, love
- 41:04Speaker 2: that beer. All my teammates, you know, my wrestling colleagues
- 41:08Speaker 2: love beer, but I never did get into it, and
- 41:10Speaker 2: I'm glad I didn't because it's taken its toll on
- 41:13Speaker 2: a lot of good men. Yeah. But I'll tell you this,
- 41:18Speaker 2: after those knee surgeries, I had to take, Three Oxycontin
- 41:21Speaker 2: a day. Yeah. Shoot. One in the morning, one at noon,
- 41:26Speaker 2: or one at one o'clock, and then one at sundown.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Because they had time release in them, you know, and
- 41:31Speaker 2: it worked great. It didn't make you goofy or anything,
- 41:34Speaker 2: but I could ride a bike, you know, and stuff.
- 41:37Speaker 2: It kind of hurt worse later, but with the pain pill,
- 41:41Speaker 2: take another dang pill. Oh, yeah.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I feel like a damn Care Bear if I take
- 41:44Speaker 1: one of them. Shut up.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Well, then COVID came. And I went to get my medicine,
- 41:50Speaker 2: because we never left our ranch except for go to
- 41:52Speaker 2: the doctor, you know. I mean, we had everything there.
- 41:54Speaker 2: In Kauai? Yeah, in Kauai. I grow four different types
- 41:57Speaker 2: of avocado, and we trade them with our neighbors. We
- 42:00Speaker 2: have turkey. We raise sheep. We have tilapia, a fish
- 42:05Speaker 2: full of thousands of fish. And every kind of fruit
- 42:09Speaker 2: you could think of, you know. We had no reason
- 42:11Speaker 2: to go. The boys are sparing fish and throwing the
- 42:14Speaker 2: net and catching crabs and so forth. great way to live,
- 42:17Speaker 2: you know, so we just didn't really leave. But COVID came,
- 42:22Speaker 2: and so I go to get my medicine, and it's
- 42:25Speaker 2: like twice as much. I was already paying $ 900 a
- 42:28Speaker 2: month for it, $ 1, 800, and I said, well, I'm quitting
- 42:32Speaker 2: this stuff. And so I quit, but man, I got
- 42:36Speaker 2: these flu symptoms, like, you know, I felt like I
- 42:38Speaker 2: was weird, but I fought through it, you know, but
- 42:44Speaker 2: Ross was got me the stuff called Kratom. It's a
- 42:47Speaker 2: leaf on my tree. We grow the tree out there.
- 42:51Speaker 2: You can crumble it up or it comes, you put
- 42:53Speaker 2: it in a powder, put it in a pill. And
- 42:55Speaker 2: I was able to kick that Oxycontin in 10 days.
- 42:59Speaker 2: I wouldn't even want another one. By using Kratom, you
- 43:01Speaker 2: were able to kick it? Kratom. Kratom did that, yeah.
- 43:03Speaker 1: And then were you able to get off the Kratom?
- 43:05Speaker 2: That was easy to quit Kratom. I never liked that stuff.
- 43:08Speaker 2: It smelled like hay anyway, you know, but it was
- 43:09Speaker 2: easy to get off of it. But so, you know,
- 43:15Speaker 2: I decided, I told you when it came on, I
- 43:17Speaker 2: wanted my life to kind of be, help someone. All
- 43:20Speaker 2: that suffering, you want to look at something good. Yeah.
- 43:23Speaker 2: You know, and if anyone is suffering from any kind
- 43:28Speaker 2: of addiction like opioids and all, bear that in mind.
- 43:31Speaker 2: They're creating places all around. I'm not saying I'm not
- 43:33Speaker 2: getting any money for it. I'm just saying it sure
- 43:35Speaker 2: helped me. And if you're an addict and it was
- 43:38Speaker 2: bothering you, I mean, I couldn't believe I was addicted
- 43:41Speaker 2: to this stuff. I mean, I wanted to quit and I,
- 43:44Speaker 2: Got sick. I thought, shit, never going to let something
- 43:47Speaker 2: happen like this to me again.
- 43:48Speaker 1: How bad did feeling like you had to take OxyCons get?
- 43:54Speaker 2: Well, I never kind of let it get to that point.
- 43:57Speaker 2: You're supposed to take it at 1 o'clock. You're supposed
- 43:58Speaker 2: to take it in the morning, at night, before you
- 44:00Speaker 2: go to bed. That's what I always did. And you
- 44:02Speaker 2: don't walk around high. You just don't hurt because it's
- 44:05Speaker 2: got the pain relief, the time release in it.
- 44:09Speaker 1: But that Craton was helpful, huh?
- 44:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Wow. Sure was.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I have a friend who got addicted to Kratom.
- 44:15Speaker 1: So I think there's probably, there can be a slope there,
- 44:17Speaker 1: but I certainly could see how it could be used
- 44:20Speaker 1: to help people get off of Oxycontin.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's illegal in some countries. Kratom is? Kratom is.
- 44:25Speaker 2: It must be addictive, yeah.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Was addiction ever part of any of your brother's issues
- 44:32Speaker 1: or no? Did addiction run in you guys' family? It
- 44:34Speaker 1: runs in my family.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Well, you know, I don't think it does. My brother, Kerry...
- 44:40Speaker 2: You know, he went to the Betty Ford clinic and
- 44:44Speaker 2: all these places, but he was never addicted to anything.
- 44:48Speaker 2: He just liked all of it. I mean, he'd do
- 44:50Speaker 2: cocaine one day, he'd do pain pills the next day,
- 44:52Speaker 2: he'd do acid, I mean, mushrooms. It was something different
- 44:57Speaker 2: all the time. And I'm not saying I'm so good.
- 45:01Speaker 1: No, but it sounds like he was addicted.
- 45:04Speaker 2: He was addicted to the feeling.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Ah, to the feeling. Mm-hmm.
- 45:08Speaker 2: I see what you're saying. Just getting out of his skin,
- 45:11Speaker 2: you know? Oh, yeah.
- 45:13Speaker 1: God, that's a steel cage match. I don't want to
- 45:14Speaker 1: be in my own skin.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, man. But, you know, that's life. You've
- 45:19Speaker 2: got to fight through that crap, man. Yeah. You've got
- 45:22Speaker 2: to fight through it.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Well, yeah, because to me it sounds like he might
- 45:25Speaker 1: have had, he could have had addiction problems, like if
- 45:27Speaker 1: they had looked at it by today's standards. You know,
- 45:30Speaker 1: I think things were definitely looked at differently then.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Might as well, because if you can't stop,
- 45:34Speaker 2: then what do you call it, you know? Yeah. Because
- 45:37Speaker 2: I know he wanted to stop because he had those
- 45:40Speaker 2: beautiful daughters. He loved them so much. Holly and what
- 45:42Speaker 2: was the other one's name? Holly and Lacey. Lacey. Lacey
- 45:45Speaker 2: lives out in L.A. and Holly is out there in
- 45:48Speaker 2: East Texas now. And hopefully they'll be with me soon because,
- 45:52Speaker 2: you know, I've been going back to Hawaii every few months,
- 45:55Speaker 2: every month. But I haven't been back in a couple
- 45:58Speaker 2: of months now. And, man, it is hurting me because Benji,
- 46:01Speaker 2: my little treasure, is out there. Jill has four. She
- 46:06Speaker 2: has a boy and three daughters. And who's Benji? Benji
- 46:10Speaker 2: is the six-year-old. And we're like this. We grow everything together.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Oh, that's a grandchild?
- 46:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Oh, got it. I've got a lot of grandchildren. Oh,
- 46:17Speaker 2: you do? My son Marshall has given me two. Okay. Well,
- 46:20Speaker 2: he can get more out of them. Yeah, yeah. I
- 46:22Speaker 2: sure can. Fire them up. And then Kristen has given
- 46:25Speaker 2: me plenty. But that boy and I, being five, you know,
- 46:30Speaker 2: we've Four, three, that age. He was just with me
- 46:34Speaker 2: all the time. Oh, it's fun. And now Marshall has
- 46:38Speaker 2: given me a grandson, and he's just about to turn five.
- 46:42Speaker 2: And we're like that. I mean, it's either monster trucks
- 46:45Speaker 2: or we're turning over rocks. We're just throwing rocks and
- 46:47Speaker 2: catching snakes and bugs and lizards and all. And it's
- 46:51Speaker 2: just fun all the time, you know, but it's like.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I could see that for sure. You remind me also,
- 46:57Speaker 1: I mean, if you were my grandfather or something, that
- 46:59Speaker 1: would be awesome. And you remind me of Tommy Lee, actually.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Does anybody ever tell you that?
- 47:07Speaker 2: Who's Tommy Lee?
- 47:08Speaker 1: Tommy Lee from Motley Crue.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Oh, that band came to Sportatorium. They're a bunch of
- 47:14Speaker 2: nice guys. I know those guys. Of course you do, dude.
- 47:17Speaker 2: That's you, dude.
- 47:18Speaker 1: That's why you know him. But Tommy's a great guy.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Tommy's great.
- 47:23Speaker 1: The way you guys talk and stuff, does that make
- 47:25Speaker 1: any sense to you, Nick? Tommy's the greatest dude, man.
- 47:28Speaker 1: He's nice. Just the way you guys sound and stuff
- 47:31Speaker 1: like that, he's a super guy. Yeah, they're good, man.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Did you ever fight somebody high? Could people fight high
- 47:36Speaker 1: in the ring? Did people ever fight high in the ring?
- 47:41Speaker 2: I don't think so. I mean, not on purpose. Right.
- 47:45Speaker 2: You know, but I can remember, though. Oh, golly. Yeah. Oh,
- 47:53Speaker 2: we did before.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:56Speaker 2: There was this stuff called GHB, and it's this super drug,
- 48:00Speaker 2: but they sold it in like athletic stores, you know,
- 48:03Speaker 2: and sporting goods stores, because it was like a fat burner.
- 48:07Speaker 2: And so we're going to this town, and Kerry's going there.
- 48:11Speaker 2: He told us not to take too much of it,
- 48:13Speaker 2: but by the time we get there, he said, you'll
- 48:15Speaker 2: probably go to sleep in the car. By the time
- 48:16Speaker 2: we get there, you know, your body's going to be
- 48:18Speaker 2: burning your fat off, you know. So we took that
- 48:22Speaker 2: car out, and golly, shoot. I don't know how we
- 48:25Speaker 2: got through that night. It was terrible. Are we just zombies? Yeah. Yeah,
- 48:30Speaker 2: we were. We were like, we're just sitting there dozing off.
- 48:33Speaker 2: It's match time, and it'd be just one of the
- 48:36Speaker 2: brothers trying to wake you up, you know, shut up,
- 48:38Speaker 2: you know, and it was terrible, terrible. That stuff was something.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I could just imagine what that's like at that time.
- 48:46Speaker 1: You're almost like anything to kind of get an edge.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Everybody's testing out the cool stuff. I know where the
- 48:52Speaker 1: new thing is. I guess that's always been a part
- 48:55Speaker 1: of that bodybuilding world too, I think. When you're big
- 48:58Speaker 1: into bodybuilding, a lot of those things kind of come along.
- 49:01Speaker 1: There's different creatines. There's different uppers. There's these testosterone revigorators
- 49:07Speaker 1: or whatever. Sometimes it comes in a huge set of balls,
- 49:12Speaker 1: the powder or whatever.
- 49:13Speaker 2: What the hell is this?
- 49:14Speaker 1: But yeah, there's all types of– bodybuilding has always been
- 49:18Speaker 1: on the edge of like using– So competitive, yeah. Yeah,
- 49:21Speaker 1: using– and finding an advantage.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. That's when two guys are going to–
- 49:29Speaker 2: looking at the mirror with each other. I got better
- 49:34Speaker 2: things to do. Yeah, at a certain point, I think so.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Um, it's interesting that you refer to other wrestlers as
- 49:40Speaker 1: like a team or you refer it as your team
- 49:42Speaker 1: or something. Um, is that how you guys thought of
- 49:45Speaker 1: y'all's wrestling organization as a team?
- 49:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a family business and it was like
- 49:51Speaker 2: a team. It was like, uh, if, you know, we,
- 49:54Speaker 2: we were never, we're jealous of each other, you know,
- 49:57Speaker 2: as to the real truth to it is, you know, uh,
- 50:01Speaker 2: when my dad and I flip, when Carrie and me
- 50:03Speaker 2: flip the coin for the world title, well, the truth
- 50:06Speaker 2: to it was, that I'd have had a family, and
- 50:10Speaker 2: I'm married, and I have children, you know, and Kerry
- 50:12Speaker 2: wanted to be the world champion. But to be the
- 50:15Speaker 2: world champion, it's a special kind of wrestler to do that,
- 50:19Speaker 2: and not a Kerry. You need somebody that makes the
- 50:23Speaker 2: other guy look good. That's really what it's all about,
- 50:26Speaker 2: you know. And Dave could have done that, and I
- 50:31Speaker 2: think Kerry may have. I couldn't have done it, though.
- 50:33Speaker 2: I've been a babyface my whole life, you know, huh?
- 50:36Speaker 2: I kiss the babies and I do all that stuff.
- 50:39Speaker 2: But the real difficult work in wrestling, the hard stuff,
- 50:43Speaker 2: is to be a heel. That's the creative stuff, you know.
- 50:46Speaker 1: And for our listeners that don't know what a heel is.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Well, a heel is the heavy, the bad guy, you know,
- 50:51Speaker 2: the Bruiser Brodies and the Kamalas and the King Kong Bundys,
- 50:55Speaker 2: you know.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Why is that the tougher spot to be?
- 50:58Speaker 2: Well, because you're limited. You're limited. for a good guy,
- 51:03Speaker 2: what you can do, you know? But a bad guy,
- 51:06Speaker 2: he can do anything, and he better do it, too,
- 51:08Speaker 2: because it's all about, you know, it's like you're slaying
- 51:12Speaker 2: a dragon, you know? There's the knight in shining armor,
- 51:16Speaker 2: and there's the big, ugly dragon. You know, when I
- 51:19Speaker 2: first went out to Atlanta on WTBS out there, I
- 51:24Speaker 2: was 19 years old, and, you know, handsome kid, you know,
- 51:30Speaker 2: and the hero, And here comes the big monster to
- 51:33Speaker 2: wrestle me. It's this Terry Gordy. Yeah. Big monster. Bam
- 51:37Speaker 2: Bam was his name? No. Yeah. And I found out,
- 51:40Speaker 2: talking to him, he was 16. Oh, my. He was
- 51:43Speaker 2: a teenager all that time. What the hell? He was.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Y'all are being damn sex trafficked, you know? That's crazy, dude.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Yeah. That's hilarious. You're both scared of each other.
- 51:54Speaker 1: You both haven't even finished schoolwork.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Well, that's it. Bring that picture of him up.
- 52:01Speaker 1: I'm sorry to interrupt you, Kevin. Bring that picture of
- 52:03Speaker 1: him up. Look at that fella, dude. Yeah.
- 52:06Speaker 2: That's wild, huh? Yeah, he was something else. You would
- 52:10Speaker 2: have loved him. Yeah? I'm telling you, Michael Hayes, he's
- 52:14Speaker 2: a character, Buddy Calvert, but that guy was 100% gold inside.
- 52:19Speaker 2: He would fight to the death, but he had a
- 52:22Speaker 2: heart for little kids and for girls, and he was
- 52:26Speaker 2: just nice. He was such a good guy, man, but
- 52:29Speaker 2: he was a battleship, too. Did he pass away? Yeah, yeah.
- 52:34Speaker 2: What happened to him? Oh, shoot. He overdid it on
- 52:41Speaker 2: the plane. He OD'd on a plane, and they had
- 52:43Speaker 2: to restart him. Shoot. And then something, I believe that
- 52:50Speaker 2: his blood stayed away from his brain too long, and
- 52:53Speaker 2: it starved his brain, and he had some damage when he,
- 52:56Speaker 2: When he came out of that, then I talked to him,
- 52:59Speaker 2: and he just, Kev, I hurt myself, brother. I said, no, Terry,
- 53:04Speaker 2: you're fine. He goes, no, I'm not fine, Kev. So
- 53:07Speaker 2: he could talk to me, but he was real slow.
- 53:11Speaker 2: He didn't have any of this hand-eye kind of coordination.
- 53:16Speaker 2: So it cost him something, huh? Dang. But then I'd
- 53:19Speaker 2: always heard that he fell off the jetway getting on
- 53:22Speaker 2: a plane one time, too. I think he did. He
- 53:24Speaker 2: fell off the jetway drunk. Landed on his head and
- 53:29Speaker 2: got back up and got on the plane and made
- 53:30Speaker 2: the show. Yeah. So I thought that was why he
- 53:34Speaker 2: was like that. But he said, no, something else. You know, yeah.
- 53:40Speaker 1: So many guys went through so much, man. Terry Funk,
- 53:44Speaker 1: he's still alive, I believe, isn't he?
- 53:45Speaker 2: Man, I hope so. But I hadn't heard the bad
- 53:48Speaker 2: news if he had. Oh, no, he says he passed
- 53:52Speaker 2: away in August. I love that guy. Two years ago.
- 53:55Speaker 2: So I hope that I.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Terry Funk was, man, he was incredible to watch, wasn't he?
- 54:01Speaker 2: He sure was. He taught me so much, too. Me,
- 54:05Speaker 2: my brother Dave and I, we're 19, 18 years old,
- 54:09Speaker 2: and we're the bad guys in Amarillo wrestling Dory and Terry,
- 54:12Speaker 2: who are the great, good guys. You know, they loved them.
- 54:15Speaker 1: And Dory Funk as well? And Dory, they're brothers. And
- 54:18Speaker 1: their dad was Dory Funk Sr.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Okay. A super bad ass. Well, these two were in
- 54:25Speaker 2: the ring, and Dave and I, we're just learning, you know,
- 54:28Speaker 2: we're just learning about this. Dave, pretty good, he go,
- 54:30Speaker 2: but I didn't know what to do, really. And so
- 54:33Speaker 2: we're in the ring, and Dory's telling us everything. He goes,
- 54:38Speaker 2: spit on me, kid. I said, sir? He said, spit
- 54:41Speaker 2: on me. So I spit on him, and so Dave
- 54:46Speaker 2: unloads on Terry, too, and The crowd went wild. They
- 54:50Speaker 2: hated our guts. So they beat us, you know, and
- 54:53Speaker 2: I get on the mic and I say, you're in
- 54:55Speaker 2: trouble now. I'm going to get my daddy. And so then, oh,
- 54:58Speaker 2: they booed me good, you know. And so I love
- 55:01Speaker 2: being a heel, but I just wasn't good at it like,
- 55:03Speaker 2: you know, like Dave was. Irving Curry.
- 55:06Speaker 1: So that was the real, so that was something that
- 55:09Speaker 1: was tough to be a heel.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot harder. You have to have some
- 55:13Speaker 2: creativity about it, you know.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:15Speaker 2: And then. You've got to have a personality that you're projecting.
- 55:21Speaker 2: It's got to come from in here, you know?
- 55:23Speaker 1: Right, and you can't get upset if people don't like
- 55:25Speaker 1: you because you're almost the guy that people don't like.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Well, Dave and I come back from the ring in
- 55:29Speaker 2: Florida one time, and Dave's a bad guy, and so
- 55:32Speaker 2: am I, too. And so this guy steps up. You
- 55:35Speaker 2: remember people would dip skull, and they'd spit in those cups.
- 55:38Speaker 2: So we sloshed that stuff on us, you know, and grrrr.
- 55:42Speaker 2: And I thought, well, you know, we've been begging him
- 55:45Speaker 2: to hate our guts. Finally, we're there. And I look,
- 55:47Speaker 2: and Dave's running up in the bleachers after the guy.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Kicked us out of the stands and all. So I said, Dave,
- 55:56Speaker 2: we worked our butts off to make him hate us.
- 55:58Speaker 2: He goes, Dave was just, you know, you couldn't talk
- 56:01Speaker 2: to him. He was so mad.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Here's a dirty little secret the insurance company would rather

- 58:40Speaker 1: you think he was the most athletic?
- 58:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Kerry was a really good athlete. He was? He
- 58:46Speaker 2: was just everything. It just came easy to him. In fact,
- 58:49Speaker 2: when I watched him play his senior year in high school,
- 58:54Speaker 2: it looked like a... Played football? It looked like Terry
- 58:57Speaker 2: Gordy playing against a bunch of peewee guys. He was
- 59:00Speaker 2: that big. I sound like I'm but he carried the
- 59:05Speaker 2: ball five times and he scored five touchdowns. And the
- 59:08Speaker 2: coach took him off offense said he wanted to save
- 59:11Speaker 2: him for defense, but he was great on offense. He
- 59:13Speaker 2: was a good linebacker, too, but he was really a
- 59:17Speaker 2: good running back. I've never seen anybody just run through
- 59:19Speaker 2: people like that. Dang. But he didn't like football. The
- 59:23Speaker 2: University of Texas offered him a scholarship. He didn't want
- 59:25Speaker 2: to go. He didn't want to play football. He wanted
- 59:27Speaker 2: to do track, yeah. No, he wanted to track. He
- 59:29Speaker 2: wanted to track. And Dave, the same way basketball. Dave
- 59:32Speaker 2: loved basketball. I love football, you know. But we go
- 59:38Speaker 2: to North Texas, and Dave has his scholarship. We're both there,
- 59:42Speaker 2: you know. And so I look up on that hill
- 59:46Speaker 2: one day, and it's a real hot day, and I
- 59:48Speaker 2: hear a pop. And I saw he hits the ground.
- 59:51Speaker 2: So I look up there, and I can see through
- 59:53Speaker 2: the dust. Dave's big old frame getting up off of
- 59:56Speaker 2: that ground. He's playing wide receiver, and We had some
- 59:58Speaker 2: defensive backs that were killers, you know. And so Dave
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: gets up and I see the coach is parked over
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: there watching practice. And he walks out to Dave and
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: he tells Dave, we're practicing in that air-conditioned gym out there.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: And when we get thirsty, we get a drink of water.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: It's not like this out here. And so Dave quit
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: and went to play basketball at North Texas and I
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: played football. But that, we all, each our sports. Dave
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: was a basketball player. I ran, I played football in
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: the career. It was discus, you know.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: And your other brothers, Mike and Chris, were you guys
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a little bit disconnected from them because of age?
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that was it. Because by then we were wrestling
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: and we weren't home very much. And Mike was the
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: big brother to Chris. Got it.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: So that was almost like a second, it was almost
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: like a second installment of children in a way.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it was.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw that match with Kerry and Ric Flair.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: There's one match I remember, it was during the daytime, right?
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And I think it was in 84, maybe?
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Is this it? Daytime, it was 84.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: This was after David had passed away.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Right. Were you at this match? Oh, yeah. I wrestled
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: on this card, too.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Because he looks so much more athletic, and no judgment
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: to Ric Flair. I mean, their age differences may be
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: huge here. But did he ever have to slow down
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: with other wrestlers to make it look more real?
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Does that make any sense? Well, I suppose, but yeah,
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: you know, it's all about, it's, he had such charisma,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: you know, that his charisma was really his thing. I mean,
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: he had a great body and a beautiful build, and
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you, Tony Atlas and I were
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: bench pressing, and I had a good bench press. I
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: could bench 445 pounds, but my brother and Tony were
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: benching 520, both of them, and I mean, repping it,
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: you know, and I've never seen anybody as strong as
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Kerry was. I mean, Kerry, for his size, had the
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: most power I've ever seen anybody be able to bring up.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: And he was agile, too. I mean, I told you
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: he was a high jumper, a really good high jumper.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: What was it like when Flair came to town? That
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: must have been a ride, huh? He's quite a character.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he was. He's something else. He's something else, man.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: You had a show with him, right? And the best time.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Because he's just, he's got stories, and he likes to,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: It's fun. He's all fun all the time.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: And there's no other side to it, really.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: No. There kind of isn't. He is a real gentleman.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: He's got a great voice. You know, when you hear
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: his voice, you think, that should be a radio man.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: You know, he really does sound good, but when he
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: comes to your town, he's going to give an interview
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: that's going to rile, I don't care who you are,
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: he's going to make you furious, and you're going to
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: come down and see him get his butt kicked.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: And so you've got to have that. You know, that's Rick. Now,
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Harley Race and the other champions, throwing a blank, but
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I mean the Briscoes, and they were great. But he's
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: had something else they brought to the table. Harley was,
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: you know, he had his rep at all of his
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: different holes and moves. But Rick, what an interview he gives.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: And he's got the experience, too. You know, he's something else.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: And he's got a good head for for when to
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: do what he does. But you see what I mean?
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: A guy like me really wouldn't fit the bill like
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Rick would. And he's going to bump all night. He
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: doesn't ever get tired. He's going to drag it out
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: to an hour or he's going to try to.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Yeah, just magnetic, man. That was a magnetic time.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: He is.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: What was one of the most traumatic things that happened
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: to one of your brothers in their life while they
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: were alive? Was there anything that kind of started change
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: their life a little bit that we didn't really see
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: as much?
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Well, probably so. Yeah. Uh, my little brother, Mike, you know,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: with the toxic shock syndrome, he had, uh, we were
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: wrestling in Tel Aviv and, uh, we're going to do
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: some shows in Lebanon too. And so Mike saw wrestling
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: the guy, but his shoulder had been, uh, dislocated and
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: he popped it back into the dressing room, got back
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: out there in the ring and it popped out again.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: And it had really popped out bad this time. So
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: we flew him back to Texas to get surgery. And
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: with the incision, it got toxic shock syndrome. It's a
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: tampon thing ladies get. But they had such a huge
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: incision where the arm was, where the shoulder was, that
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: they had shaft gauze in there. Oh, and some of
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: it had gotten left in. I think that might. It
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: didn't get left in, but it got septic or something, maybe.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: But whatever it was, his fever went up to so high, 106,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: I even heard 107. It didn't kill him, though. In fact,
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: the doctor came down. I say to him, you wouldn't
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: believe it. The hospital was filled with fans. They wanted
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: to offer their kidneys or their liver to Mike. Such love.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: But the docs told us that his fever is too high.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: He's not He's not going to come back, and he's
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: not going to make it through the night. And so
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: rather than go up there and say goodnight like he
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: told us to, then we had my parents were down
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: in this waiting room at the hospital up here at Baylor,
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: and we had Gary Holder. We had a chaplain that
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: would go with us to shows, you know, big shows.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: And he gave a prayer where he talked about it.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: He said, God, you say anything we ask in Jesus' name,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: then you will do it. So we're asking you to
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: stand on your word. And he slammed that Bible down
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: on the desk. Man, I wanted to hide my head.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: I thought he went too far, you know. But it
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: was just a few seconds later, the door opened up,
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: and he said, the fever's broken. There's hope. And we
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: ran up to see Mike. Just like that. And David
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: Manning was right there. My dad was there. My mom, Carrie,
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: saw it. It was a miracle, man. It was really
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: a miracle and beautiful. But I don't want to get
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: in an argument with people, but I would love, like
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: I told you, I'd like my life to have an
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: experience that people could benefit from. If you're somebody that's
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: like maybe I was at a time, like life is overwhelming.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: And you know what? It's like when you overcome something,
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: you're so much a better man than you were before.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: It's like when you're pushed to your limit and you
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: have to adjust or die, you get stronger. You get stronger.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: And I would just say to anybody that's out there lost,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: if you want to feel like you'll never be afraid
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: of man or beast again, you will not be afraid
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: of dying if you know where you're going to go
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: when you die. And, I mean, I know where I'm
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: going to go, and I have no fear. I mean,
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: it's a great life.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Did you have a religion instilled in you when you
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: were growing up?
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: No. That's the thing. We went to church on Easter,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: I remember, but it's a pretty odd story. But I
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: spent the night with my dad's real estate partner. He's
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: a doctor, and I spent the night with him one night,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: and the next day was Sunday, and they took me
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: to church with them. And so I went to church,
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: and so The only reason I went is because if
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: you spend the night, you're going to sleep with the dog,
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: and I love their dog, you know. Oh, yeah, dude.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I've stayed over places just to be by the animals.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Well, we go to church, and these men surround me
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: and ask me if I want to accept Jesus. And
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: so I knew that song, Jesus Loves Me, you know.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: And I'd been to wrestling before, and I'd seen people
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: poke the finger and stuff, and I knew that was bad.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: You know, and I thought, I don't want to be bad.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: I want to be good, you know, so. So I
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: want to be on that side, you know, because I've
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: kind of seen a little of those words, you know. Yeah,
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: you weren't a good heel.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: No.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: This was choosing not to be a heel.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: For eternity, I mean.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Well, you know, now that I understand what was going on,
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: because I was just a little boy, you know. So
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: I said the prayer, you know, and they asked me
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: if I believed Jesus died. You know, I did. And
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: I felt something move in my heart. something weird in
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: my chest. And I thought somebody, there were men standing
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: behind me. I thought they did something to me like,
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: but I actually felt something move inside me. And I
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: think it was that little bit of evidence gave me
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: a lot of courage. And I knew God was with me.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: I knew he was. And that night I was, uh,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: got on my bed and I went and I looked
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: on my porch. I was just looking at the outside,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: the stars. And I'm a little boy. I could have
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: imagined it, but I could have sworn I saw an
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: angel fly across the field with a horn in his mouth,
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: like it was a blown horn. I didn't hear any sound.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: It looked just like a Christmas ornament, a Christmas tree.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: But in my mind, this was the best day of
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: my life, and I belong to God now. And I've
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: never been afraid of anything since then. Amen. Amen.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting. I think sometimes people get scared to
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: share their testimonies or moments that they've had where they've
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: just felt like something stronger than them took care of them. Yeah,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: I remember a feeling one time where I was just
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: broken down, man. I was really banged up about a
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: relationship and just not sure what I wanted to do
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: with my life.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: I'd moved back in with my step-parents.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Man, I remember one time I was just on my
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: knees bawling. And I felt something come around my heart, man.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: I can't even explain it. Just like this warm thing.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I mean, I'd never felt where my heart was. I mean,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I'd put my hand on it hoping for the best
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: when I was pledging allegiance.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Oh, Theo, he's knocking on the door. But I mean.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: You're a little boy. You're beautiful. And you're all alone
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: suffering like that. God, that was God, Theo.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: He came to you. You know, we got one lifetime
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: to learn it, you know, that there is such a thing.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: I mean, let me tell you, there is a double.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: And people want to say there's no such thing, but
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: there is. Boy, I could tell you a really weird story,
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: but it's 100% true. Yeah.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: I mean, your life's full of craziest stories ever.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Listen to this one. Okay, so I'm going to wrestle
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Big Daddy King Kong Bundy and the Rogers Coliseum in
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Fort Worth. So I'm on the way to the ring.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Kerry said, Kev, come here. I said, what, Kerry? He said,
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: I was dad on the phone. Mike's just been in
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: a terrible car wreck. He's dying now. Dad said, don't
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: try to get there fast because he'll be dead before
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: we get there anyway. And I said, what? And so
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: I ran to the ring. I said, ring the bell.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: They ring the bell. I grabbed Bundy's leg, schoolboyed him, one, two, three,
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: ran to the back, Kerry, and I hauled out to
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: the hospital. Still in my rust and stuff. And so
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: we get there and there's cops everywhere. And they're standing
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: by the doors. And I run right into them. I
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: bust open. And there's this black lady out there. And
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: she said, my baby, my baby. And when I crash
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: those doors open, there's a little black kid laying there dead.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Blood and stuff. So I go out the other door,
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: open the door. And there's Mike. Hey, Kev. He was fine.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Just fine. And so I'm like, I'm numb, you know.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: And so I knew my parents were on their way
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: down here. And so I go outside and I see
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: them walking down the ramp and I said, he's okay.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: And my dad just about fell down. My mom, they
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: fell down. Well, so I'm going to get my car
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: to come home. And Abilene is west, but Denton is north. Well,
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: for some reason I went west and I went almost
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: to Abilene, Eastland. I was so out of it, just driving.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: By the time I got home, I was so sleepy.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: The sun had already come up. He hadn't been waiting
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: for me. And so I was going to take my
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: bulldog down to the lake and wash him. I had
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Castile soap, you know, okay for the environment. And I
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: was washing my dog. And, oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Maybe it's concussions. But before that, I said, God, thank
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: you for giving me my brother back. Let me fight
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: the devil. I said, Satan, I'll fight you. I'll fight you.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: And I and said, let me fight him, God. It
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: was stupid, a stupid boy. And so I go to
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: the lake, I'm washing my dog, and Theo, I swear
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: this happened. So my dog, everything's real still, and I'm
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: feeling weird a little bit, and I look and I
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: see there's a bush here and some more bushes here
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: and a hill here, and I see these little black
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: things taking position against me and advancing on me. I
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: felt like I could smell blood. I could smell death.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: And I said, get in the car, Pam. And I
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: put my back to the car, and I was like this,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: and I would see them going from the trees. They're
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: getting these positions, and I was ready, and next thing
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: I know, I'm out. I'm having a seizure in my car.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: And so Pam's screaming and crying, and these fishermen have
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: run up to help, and I must have hit one
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: or kicked one or something. But a girl ran up
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: and said, I know his parents. I'll get them. And
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: an ambulance came and all that. But I know it's
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: because I'm a man and I challenge the devil. And
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: we have Jesus in us that fights the devil. We
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: don't have anything to do with the devil. And so
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: that was my lesson that I learned. But I know
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: that happened. And it's just in me like, written on
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: my heart with a nail. Look, it's a testimony, man. Yeah,
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: it is. Thank you for sharing that.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think sometimes we don't think that the devil
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: is real, and that is the devil's way to trick us.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: I believe that.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: You know, if you don't think that evil's real, then
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: you don't know how close it is to you either.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: You don't know how intertwined it could be in your
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: own veins. If you don't even believe it's real, that's
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: a pretty masterful trick.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and we think with a man's mind. The devil
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: is an angel's mind. You know, I mean, it's way
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: smarter than we are.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: The devil's a thug. The devil is a thug, you know.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: That is the truth, man. Thank you for sharing that.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I've had friends share some really, some strong testimonials, some
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: moments where they just felt that, you know. I mean,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: there has been moments in my life where, yeah, I
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: just felt, you just get that feeling. So now as
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you ever get overcome with that feeling, you're just so
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: thankful that God has been with you.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Man, because you thought you did it yourself and you
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: realize you didn't, that God was there with you. Man,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: when I've had that feeling come over me, God, I mean,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: it just, it'll, you just, you almost feel like you
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: thaw out some, you know, like you thaw out.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: And then we get to a position where we, where
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: something bad comes along. Oh, God, don't let this happen.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: And he saves us again. And like, oh, I forgot
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: the other times too, you know. Oh, I'll forget.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: I'll forget pretty quick.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: You're the little Southern boy. I know what kind of,
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: you caught copperheads and water moccasins and stuff like that,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Oh, I definitely, I got electrocuted a bunch. I was
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: definitely beaten a lot. Yeah, we got bit by things, attacked.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I got attacked by a bunch of stray animals. I
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: grew up in the stray animal belt. Really?
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: So they had just. What kind of stray animals? Oh, anything, brother.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Snakes, raccoons, birds, dogs.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I don't even know. Just, they had dogs wearing jewelry.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: All kind of shit was out there looking for us.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Man, you got a good memory. It was dangerous out there. Well.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: You know, I got chased by a goose when I
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: was a little kid. By a ghost? A goose.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: Oh, a goose, yeah. I'd rather a damn ghost. Gooses
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: are dangerous, dude. Well, they can bite, you know, but
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: for a little kid, scary. They don't care, and they're violent. And, dude,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: a goose will come at you to just be one
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: of them. Some animals will have five or six of them.
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: Raccoons are like that, you know. Ants are like that.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: you know, they won't come at you just one, but
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: a goose, that thing will roll up on you solo.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: That's pretty savage when you think of it.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Is that you?
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: That's a ghost is thinking Rambo.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: That's crazy. Um, Oh, what were the, your parents' lives?
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Like what was like, um, are your parents, either of
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: your parents still alive?
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: No. Okay.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Are they buried in the same place?
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, they are. Yeah. We, uh, we're had my mother, uh,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: You know, when we moved out, I couldn't move to
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Kauai without taking my mom with me. Oh, so you
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: took your mom with you? Yeah. Oh, dude. And she
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: lived in the house with us, too.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Did she love it there?
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: You know, my dad used to wrestle in Japan a lot,
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: and so we would meet him in Hawaii. And I
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: didn't realize it, but Hawaii reminded her of her sons.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: And she didn't want to go anywhere. She wanted to
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: stay in her room, and she wanted to grow her flowers.
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: And that was it. She just... She did love it.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: She loves her flowers, you know, but it was like.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: It reminded her too much of that. And she passed
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: away up in our guest room upstairs. But all my
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: granddaughters and my son's wives were standing around her singing
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: hymns while she passed away. And Theo, before she died,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: she was a super good woman. She was so sweet
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: and thoughtful to everyone. When she'd come to school, I'd
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: be so proud of her, you know, because all the
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: kids would like her. But when she... was laying in
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: that bed, and she breathed her last breath. Even as she,
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: like that, her hand went up like that. And I
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: could just picture touching Jesus' hands and going to heaven,
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: She was probably ready to go see her sons, huh?
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Oh, I know she was. You know, my dad. I
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: didn't tell you all this personal stuff, buddy, but.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Well, I could match you if you need, but we've
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: heard my stories a lot. No, I just can't imagine.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: I bet she was ready to go see her sons,
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: you know. I bet she'd been gone away from him
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: long enough.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: And you know, my dad too. Because really, when you
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: think about it, my dad lost more than my mom.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: My dad lost his sons, but he didn't ever show it.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: I mean, but he hurt. He was hurting, but he
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: was like, it was just that he, at his latter,
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: at the final days, he was so torn up inside.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: I think when he saw me, it would remind him
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: of all the sons he'd lost. And he pulled that.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: 44 out one day, and he pointed his head like,
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: I'm just going to shoot myself. No, don't do it.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Don't do it, Dad. And he pointed the gun at me,
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: and I said, he said, you're afraid to die, aren't you?
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: He said, you'd have the guts. You'd do it, too,
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: if you had the guts. And I said, Dad, it
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: doesn't take guts to live. I mean, it'd take guts
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: to kill yourself, Dad. It'd take guts to stay alive
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: on this earth. And He was hurting so much. He
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: would just go, oh, God. He'd rub his face to go, oh, God.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: And when I'd hear that, I actually wanted him to die.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: I wanted him to pass away. He was just miserable.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: And I know that when he died, he was right
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: there with Dave Carey. It was beautiful. But my dad
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: had gotten away. He said, look, son. if you kick
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: an old dog enough times, he's going to bite you.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: And that's how I am with God right now. He's
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: kicked me too many times. And so I said, Dad,
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: it's going to be, you're going to be so surprised,
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: but I couldn't convince him of it, you know.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't imagine what it's like to be kind
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: of the surviving son. Did you feel chosen or did
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: you feel deserted? Does that question make any sense to you?
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Sure, it's Funny you say that. Yeah, because I felt
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: chosen in the way that my dad gave me a
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: tape recorder back when I was in fifth grade. It
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: was a bell and howl, you know, and you could
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: talk into it. I couldn't believe I could hear my voice,
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: you know. And so I thought I love my dad
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: so much. I filled the tape. Okay, one day dad's
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: going to die and I'm going to talk. And here
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: I am alive while he's still alive. And so I'm
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: going to. Say something to make me feel better. Man,
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Kev. Sorry, buddy. I just filled the table
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: with that.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: Oh, as if you were impersonating your dad?
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Like I can comfort myself later when I
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: don't want.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: No, dude, that's really interesting though. That's so interesting.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: But I remember saying, Dave and Carrie, we loved each
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: other so much. I thought, I can't bear to lose them.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: I could not bear it. And I thought, but they
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: love me that way. And so I said this, even
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: in a prayer, I said, God, if, One of us
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: has to stand back. If one of us has to
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: be the only one, let it be me. Wow. Because
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: I'm hard and I'm strong inside. Lord God made me
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: that way. But I didn't know it would ever happen,
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: but I did say it, you know.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: You know, I used to have, I mean, this is
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: like silly, but like, so when I was growing up,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: I didn't have any, like whenever my dad died, I
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: didn't have anything of his, right? I didn't have like
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: a shirt or like a button or just anything to
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: remember him by, you know. And so I used to
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: write postcards to my kids, right? Whenever I was on
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: the road just traveling over the years doing comedy, I
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: would write postcards to my kids.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: I don't have any kids yet.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: But I would send them postcards just so in the
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: future they would be able to see that I was
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: thinking of them, right?
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Like I just wanted to prove. That's so smart, bro.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: But I just think it's the same type of thing.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: It's like you're just trying to like– I don't know.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: You're always thinking of like how do I make sure
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: that every– That somebody knew I cared or that somebody
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: knew somebody else cared.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: I'm going to die someday. Yes. I'm going to die someday.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: It's just stuff like that is interesting. I think a
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: lot of people do little things like that. But that's
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: interesting because you could have felt like you were deserted.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: But to end up feeling that you were chosen, that's
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: pretty powerful.
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: Well, I don't think I'd say that we're chosen more
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: like I'd say that I would not want to put
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: them through that.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: Ah.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Like you were the one that could handle it.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: Then I think I... I would not want them to
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: go through it. I would rather me go through it
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: than they did. And I think God might have gave
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: me some credit for that, you know, because it's all
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: about just, we're in a struggle, you know, it's like,
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: we're not, on this earth to laugh it up and
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: have fun. We have tests, real tests, and life is hard.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: And that kind of stuff that kicks you in the
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: nuts is what makes you stronger, makes you more strong.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: And without that, you can't give advice to people about
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: things you haven't been around. But once you've had it
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: and suffered yourself, now you can say, listen up.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: With that said, and I agree. I was just thinking
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: about that the other day. It's like, I've always had
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: this outlook and they kind of don't teach you that
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: when you're a kid as much that, and they really
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: shouldn't when you're a young child, but I think they
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: should teach you at some point that life is a test,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: that it is full of a lot of tests and
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: it's not all just going to be like this perfect
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: thing or everything might not work out the way you
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: think it is. You know, you never really kind of
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: get that education maybe, or maybe some parents do give
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: it to their kids. But with what you said a
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: second ago, if you had to share something with somebody
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: who had lost a sibling or who had dealt with
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: you know some grief from loss something that you've learned
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: because i mean you're like almost the the neil armstrong
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: of loss i mean you've you've had you've endured a
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: lot in your life you know and watched and watched
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: other loved ones endure a lot you know um what
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: what have you kind of learned that you feel like
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: you could share if anything.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: Well thank you for giving that opportunity because that's what
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: i want to do is to try to make it
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: positive for somebody buddy But, you know, it's tough because
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: I want to tell people, like, when somebody dies, it's
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: going to get better, but it doesn't get better, man.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: You don't even get used to it. It's just keep
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: tolerating it, and you just somehow it gets a little
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: better someday. But there's no good word to say to them,
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: but when somebody's really busted up, you know, and when
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: you overcome that and are able to— And maintain through that, well,
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: then it's now you've achieved through a struggle. You've achieved
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: over an obstruction. You've gone over a hurdle, you know,
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: and it's like now you can say you won. Now
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: you can say you won something because without a fight,
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: there can't be a winner. There can't be a champion.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: There can't be a success unless there's that adversity, you know.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: And so God wouldn't put you through that unless you're
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: going to benefit. You've got a great mind. You're an
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: intelligent guy. Oh, thanks, man. Life is knocking on your
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: door too, my friend. You too.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: I feel like you and me are probably pretty similar
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: in some ways.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: You feel that? Sure do. I do too.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: How therapeutic was having your own family for you?
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: Everything, man. That was what did it, is what saved me. Because, man,
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: when you can have anything you want, you know, and
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: your brothers can have anything they want, and they come
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: over and, let's go do this, let's go do that.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: It's like, what a life. I mean, it's a whole lot.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: But I don't mean to bum me out, man. I
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: don't want to start bumming me out. I don't feel
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: like you're bumming me out at all.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: Really? No, I was just thinking, like, Well, I was
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: going to ask you what's something that you admire about
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: each one of your children, and then I was going
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: to ask you what's something that you, maybe like something
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: funny or something silly that you kind of admire or
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: maybe miss, something goofy or something about each one of
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: your brothers, maybe. Just like a nice, like a band
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: they like to listen to, just something like that. Oh, yeah.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: Well, we love good music. I can tell you, I've
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: never told anybody this story, but we had our, we
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: had a, like a tree house, but it was built
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: on stilts, a little room on stilts, my dad made us.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: And so, we had a cut, my mother was a
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: third oldest, but there were, she had an older sister.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: And so, her older sister came over and she had
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: two sons and they were, they could pick on us,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: you know. And so, we were hiding up there and
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: they were trying to get up, we'd pull the rope up,
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: we'd let them go and we had rocks, we're throwing
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: rocks at them. And so, it got really bloody, you know,
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: we're chunking rocks and hitting each other and, And, you know,
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: and so I think I'll let one go and hit
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: one of the guys right in the head, you know,
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: and my cousin. It would have kicked my ass if
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: he could have caught me, you know. But so he
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: runs in the house to tell on me, so we'll
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: get in trouble, you know. And so me, Dave, and
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: Kerry come down from the treehouse, you know. We're watching out.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: They're not going to ambush us and beat us up
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: on the way to the house, you know. But they
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: run to the house to tell on us, you know,
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: so we run up there. And so... The guy's bleeding.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: My cousin's bleeding. My cousin Steve bleeding all over the place.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: And Dad said, what the hell happened? And I was
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: about to fill something down. Curie said, Dad, he got
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: a little razor blade, cut his head. And my dad
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: started cracking up laughing, you know. And so Dave and
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: I kind of go with the story, you know. And
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: I think he started laughing and just let it go.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: But I think back on that, Curie was such a
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: cute little kid, you know. He was lying about it, huh?
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: He did. He was that way. He was quick, huh?
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: Another time, we were riding in the car, and my
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: friend had a BB gun. So we were riding with
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: a BB gun and shooting signs and warning lights and stuff,
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: you know. So we drive by a pickup, and he
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: shoots the windshield. Of your own vehicle? No, no. It
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: was a friend of ours. A friend of ours, an
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: old man that had a ranch just south of us.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: And so shot up, You blew it out? Yeah, I
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: shot the window out and the cops were going to
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: get us, you know, and we're running from them and
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: all and got in such trouble. And so we're answering
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: for it all. We got away. And so they weren't
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: sure that we were the ones, you know, and so
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: the cops were all talking to us and my dad
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: was there and I hear my dad say, My sons
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: won't lie to me. So I'll ask them, my sons
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: will not lie to me. And so he calls Kerry
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: over there. And Kerry had already lied to him, you know.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: And so I heard Dad say that. He said, come here, Kev.
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: And Kerry's over there. We're going with the lie, you know,
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: but I'm busted. And so I'm going to say, I
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: can't get the word to Kerry. I get it to Dave.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: Dave can't get it to Kerry. And I said, yes, sir, Dad,
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: we did it. We all did it. And I said, Kerry,
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: come here, son. Kerry, look me in the eye. I
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: want you to tell me the truth. Did you do it?
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: He said, no, sir, God, I swear. Oh, man. So
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Kerry could lie. Kerry could lie.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: That's all right. Somebody's got to lie, man. And what
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: about Chris? What was something that was fun or just
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: neat about him? What was something he liked to do?
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: Well, he loved Indian stuff, you know, and he had a,
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: so he had, he stacked the rocks and all and
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: Indian stuff. He knew all about chief bowls and the
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: wonka tonka, I don't know.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Wompum, something like that. He knew a lot of Native
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: American lore.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he loved all that stuff. And so where they lived,
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: they had all arrowheads and spearheads. He found that stuff
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: all the time. So that's what he was really doing.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: But he was a great artist. He could draw anything,
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: you know, and So I thought that, but he was,
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: he had asthma. And so because he had to take medicine,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: it made his bones brittle. And he just wasn't going
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: to get big and strong. You know, it just didn't,
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: when he worked out, it didn't really do anything.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: Well, y'all took all the bigness too. If he was
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: the last one, y'all didn't leave any bigness for him.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: That's what I thought. I thought maybe we took all
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: the big because, man, he wanted to be, I could
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: have cared less, but he wanted to be big so bad.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: And what about Mike? What was something that Mike liked
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: to do? What kind of music did he listen to?
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: Oh, he liked Metallica and ACDC.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Did y'all ever go to any concerts together? Oh, always.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: A lot of concerts together, yeah. What was one y'all
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: went to? ZZ Top. Loved them. But those about to rock.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Isn't that ACDC? We went to a Foghat concert, and
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: I think the band that warmed up for him was
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: I Am Just a Cowboy, Road Runs Trail, Story Nights,
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: Campfire Lights. What was that song? The Cowboy song.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: Thin Lizzy?
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: Thin Lizzy. What is it? Thin Lizzy. Thin Lizzy? Yeah,
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: that was a great concert.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Cowboy song by Thin Lizzy. I haven't heard that. I've
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: got to listen to that one.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: Oh, that's a great song. And that was going to
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: be Dave's song. See, I picked the music. But with
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: Kerry picked his song. The walkout music? I always did
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: the music. And I picked that song for Dave. But
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: he said, no, Kev, I'm a cowboy. And he picked,
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: when I die, I may not go to Texas. It
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: was nothing. You want music.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: By Tonya Tucker?
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean. Good God. But it was terrible
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: for Go to the Ring to. I'm sure it was, dude.
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: You want to sound like an interesting sound and a
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: crescendo and you'll kick the door off and the lights
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: and all. So you don't want something like that.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: And he's blasting some damn Shania Twain or whatever.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's a different level, man. Okay.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: And so, and Jack had passed away before you. What
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: about Kerry? What's something you remember about him that you like?
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: Shoot. Kerry was just.
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: Were y'all the closest probably?
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: Well, me, Dave and Kerry were real close. And then
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Mike was our baby. You know, so we were really close. But,
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: you know, Chris was a little bit— I told you about
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: the divorce thing when I was a kid. One thing
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: my mother insisted on my dad was that my dad
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: not discipline Mike and Chris like he did me, Dave,
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: and Kerry. Because he used a leather strap on us,
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: you know. But, I mean, we're boys, you know.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: It was kind of common back then.
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: It was, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: My principal beat me in office one time, a couple times,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I think. It was back when your principal could spank you. Yeah,
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: I've been beaten there, too. I mean, you know, we
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: had a comment. Yeah, we had a comment.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: Did we? I don't know. Well, you know, if we
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: got away with it and we just done it again,
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: you know. Look, he got me.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: I got over on him more times than he got
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: over on me.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: I'll tell you that, Mr. Brady. Yeah, I think same
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: with mine. I had a principal like that. He'd come
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: down in the office, and he'd open your classroom door
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: and say, who parked on my grass? You know, if
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: any car was touching grass, it was his grass, and
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: you had to move it. You know, he was a
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: really obnoxious guy.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Did you guys finish high school, you and your brothers? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we did. Of course, I hated school. I hated it.
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: I don't know if you did or not.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Oh, if I could wrestle good, I wouldn't like damn spelling. Well,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: I wasn't wrestling then. You know, I was a little kid.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: I had to do my homework and all that stuff.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: But I had to listen to all that junk in
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: class and about Susie has two dresses and, you know,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: all that crap.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: I couldn't stand it. I was bored to death. And
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: I'm not a very good parent. I told you, when
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: I see little boys, I say, I hated school. I wouldn't.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: I don't blame you for not wanting to go. There's
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: a lot better stuff to do. You got a dog,
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: you got a BB gun, and that's all you need,
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: When you think back, what about your own parenting? So
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: you have four children?
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: And what are they like? You have two boys and
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: two girls?
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: Yeah, two boys and two girls. Well, my oldest two
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: are daughters, Kristen and Jill. And Kristen has always been my,
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: soft spot i love her so much and she's brilliant
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: she does everything for us you know she's so she's
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: so and she's such a good foster mom or i
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: know uh she in hawaii she'd take the kids for
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: the the police would what do you call the uh
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: idea the when the parent when cps cps she would
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: get those kids and then For foster parents, they loved
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: her there. And so many people that loved her in Hawaii,
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: so many kids. And then there's my daughter, Jill. She
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: was way more like me. She's like, she can swim endlessly.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: I've swam out to reefs before that were way too
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: far for anybody without a boat. She'll swim out there
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: without flippers and go down and dive with lobsters with me.
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: And grab them with their hands, too. I mean, I'm
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: using gloves, but She's something else. She can run like
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: a deer. And she loves it. And her sons are
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: all athletic. I could go overboard talking about her. She's
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: such an athlete. And then there's Ross and Marsh.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: And Ross and Marshall got into wrestling.
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: Were you scared when they got into wrestling? Or did
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: you have any thoughts about it? Or that's just what
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: they wanted to do?
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: Well, not with Ross. I knew Ross. He's been an
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: ass kicker his whole life. And he fights easily, you know,
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: and that's not usually, there's not much for a man
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: like that to do in today's world except wrestling. And
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: so what else is going to be good? But Marshall,
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: I did worry about him because Marshall was a super athlete.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: He went out to Hawaii and he was the quarterback
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: and he was throwing the bombs. The newspapers were just,
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: people just want a picture of how far he could
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: throw the football. He was He was just a great athlete,
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: but I worried about him getting that heat stroke out
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: there because he had a heat issue one time. So
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: that's the only time I've ever been worried of him
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: because they're both like bulls. They're strong and healthy. I
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: wouldn't worry about it either way. With their wrestling now too,
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: they know what they need to know. I believe that
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: the wrestling business is about to really explode because it
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: was just like this when my brothers and I got started.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: And when this COVID got in, they had to wrestle
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: in empty buildings. I don't think I could have ever
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: done that. But it made it where the people really
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: have not seen them explode yet. They've worked for a little.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: They went to Japan and wrestled, and they worked for
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: a little operation in MLW. And now they're with AEW. Oh, really?
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: AEW has been popping off, dude.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: I keep hearing about it all the time now.
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: Yeah, they're really going to be something special, I believe.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: And will they tag team?
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: They've done both. They work tag teams right now, though.
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: I mean, it's a lot of, you know, tag teams
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: are such an interesting, exciting match, you know, because the
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: guys don't have time to get a hold. But they
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: can do either one. They can wrestle single. They can
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: work a tag. But probably they'll work a tag team.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, I don't want to talk
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: out of school, but We have a neighbor in Bernie,
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: and it's Bill Goldberg, the guy that wrestled at WWE. Yeah,
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: he's a Texas boy, I think, isn't he, or Oklahoma?
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: Bill Goldberg, yeah, I think it's from Oklahoma. Where is he,
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: from Norman?
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: No.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: Tulsa, Oklahoma. Did you ever fight Rocky Johnson?
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: I was too young, but my first black and white pictures, uh,
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: that was trying to flex, you know, and I've never,
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: I didn't know, you know, I didn't expect to have muscles,
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: but that's Rocky. And so Rocky's was really good at flexing.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: And so Rocky taught me everything about flexing. You know,
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: he was standing right behind the cameraman doing this and
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: doing all these things. And I, whatever Rocky did, I
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: did for the picture.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: You know, and I'm, So you learned a little from
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: him then, huh?
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: And Rocky's son is The Rock, you know.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, Dwayne Johnson.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: And so we would like, that's actually the picture.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: That's hilarious, dude.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: But Little Rock was there. Oh, was he? Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: he's a little boy. I mean, he was the cutest
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: little kid.
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: People say that Rocky is a very nice guy. He's
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: still alive?
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: He is. I don't know about that. But Rock was
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: a great guy, too. I mean, he was a. He
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: was a little younger than us, you know, so we'd
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: wrestle him and like his— we'd frustrate him to see
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: if he'd have the courage to pep up with us,
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: and he would, too.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: Who, Dwayne Johnson, The Rock?
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: He would want to fight. That pup will bite you.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: He was a.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Beautiful little kid, yeah. Y'all might have put that fire
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: in him, man. What about Bruiser Brody? Remember him?
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: Yeah. He was something else. Smart guy. On his workout routine,
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: he would just put on leather gloves and lay into
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: that heavy bag, and it thickened his chest. I mean,
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: he did bench presses too, but he had an awesome
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: bench press, but also his body was built so powerfully
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: because I think he worked out different. He did a
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: lot of strikes, and that thickens joints and all. It
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: makes you have kind of that raw strength, and he'd
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: have that. But if you want to talk about Puerto Rico, well,
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: I can tell you, too, that.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: What happened? Well, he was killed in Puerto Rico. Oh,
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: he was killed in Puerto Rico? Yeah.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: I didn't know that. Well, gosh, I never told this story,
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: but I could tell you this one, too. He was— Brody
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: was real temperamental, and he would get pissed off real easy. Well,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: the Puerto Rico wrestling office owed him about 80 grand—
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: And so my dad was president of the Alliance back then.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: And so we worked out a payout schedule where they'd
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: pay him a little each show. But Brody got into
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: that show, and he wouldn't work for them because they
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: owed him that money. And so dad worked it out
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: where he would come back. And boy, when they came back,
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: they sold out San Juan. And it was a great
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: crowd where Brody wanted his money that night because he
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: saw that they had it. But, you know, there are
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: other things that they've, you know, and... That's all that started.
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: That's all that started. So he wanted his money and
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: wanted to be, and so he kicked the guy's ass,
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: you know, and the guy's a little invader, you know,
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: forgot his name. But, man, this is an ugly story too,
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: but the guy who, and so they got in a
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: fight and the guy, Brody beat him up and he
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: knifed Brody in the shower. But this is the kind
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: of guy, I mean, the guy that did it, just
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: about a week before that, his little daughter drowned in
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: his swimming pool. So he's on edge, you know, and
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: so I can't really, I know them both, you know,
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: and they're both men that want to earn their living,
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: you know, and it's sad. Oh, that's him, Jose Gonzalez? Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: Life is, you know, like I said, we suffer, we
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: find the beautiful moments in between those ugly ones, you know,
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: and it's, it's good. It's got good and bad.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: Yeah. I, um, I'm trying to think if there was
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: something else that you talked about using medicinal marijuana. How
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: did you get into that? And then how did it
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: help you? Do you feel like, well, if you want
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: to talk about it, if you don't want to, that's fine.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. Well, um, Well, I had a lot
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: of knee surgeries too. And you can take a pain pill,
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: but if you do, then it's going to take an
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: edge off of it. And so you'll want to take more.
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: And if you do, you're going to get in a problem.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: And so I didn't want pain pills. So I wanted
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: a natural pain relief, and so I tried cannabis, and
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: I liked it. And it was just good all around
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: for me. It was good. And so I actually grow
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: it out in Kauai. And so that's how I have it.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for it, too. I mean, I hope
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: they don't make it illegal again because it's like a
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: wonder drug to me. It really was.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: Did you ever get involved in any other type of
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: plant medicine or anything like that out there? I know
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: there's like ayahuasca ceremonies and stuff like that. I've done
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: that before, and a lot of our listeners have— I
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: think I've considered it or tried it.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: Yeah, there's stuff called, oh, it's a, what's the name
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: of that? Ka, kif, no. Kava. Kava, kava. Yeah, kava
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: root's good for you. I say good for you. I
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: read about the contraindications on that, and it's kind of,
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: it can make your skin like, have, you know, What
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: do you call those things? Shingles?
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: Scales or whatever?
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: Scales, like, yeah.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Damn.
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: Make a damn dragon out of you, dude. I guess
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: that's if you do too much of it or something.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: I tried it. It's not bad for you.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: But have you ever done, like, ayahuasca or, like, a
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: plant medicine ceremony.
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: Where they put you under? I've never even heard of that.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: Ayahuasca. Ayahuasca. Oh.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: It's, like, a medicine that you take, and you kind
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: of sit in a group of the shaman, and it's usually,
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: it's like a two-day ceremony, and you kind of go
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: through these bouts of, like... It's kind of like an
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: emotional journey that you go on. It's really fascinating.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: Like a sweat lodge kind of thing, maybe? Mm-hmm. Wow. Really,
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: really fascinating if you ever get curious about it. I
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: got a friend in Israel that writes comedy shows, that
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: writes soap operas, and he does that. He goes to
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: Africa and South America and finds indigenous people and does
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: stuff like that with them. And he does, I mean,
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: he's a wealthy guy.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: We know who it is. Yeah.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: What's your physical routine like today for yourself, Kevin?
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: Physical routine?
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: Yeah, do you have like a daily routine?
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: Well, Solomon comes in my bedroom about 8.45 or 9 o'clock.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: That's your grandson? Uh-huh. And we go either catch lizards
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: or snakes or frogs. We've caught four rattlesnakes on our
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: ranch last year. And we caught king snakes and... turtles,
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: sea turtles, soft-shelled turtles, you name it. That little boy
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: and I have so much fun together. And he's the,
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: I love him to death.
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: Did he remind you of any one of your brothers
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: in particular at all, or no?
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he reminds me of Marshall and Ross. It's like
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: I'm able to be dad again, you know? It's like, well,
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: I enjoyed being their father so much. I really love
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: my sons and my daughters, but having Solomon again is
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: just like having Marshall again, you know, and he's got
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: Ross in him too, though, you know, it's beautiful. For
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: anybody that's wondering, Kevin Von Erich, I consider myself the
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: luckiest guy in the world. I mean, I know for
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: that movie coming out, you may not believe it, but
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: I am happy all day, every day, and I mean,
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: I look forward to tomorrow, and I couldn't ask for
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: a better way things turned out, and to to bitch
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: about my brothers dying too young. The truth is we
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: had a great time. We had a great time, a
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: long time. Hell yeah, we're still talking about how good
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: the time was. Yeah, yeah. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: So I can't call it a bad day.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: Is there any message you think that your father or
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: brothers felt like you think that they would want to
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: have given but they didn't get a chance to? Is
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: there ever anything like that?
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: Yeah. I want to tell you something. Now, we watched
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: my dad wrestle when we were little boys. And we
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: had an idea to make a wrestling show that would
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: be different. It would be two different, two hot cameras
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: the whole time, so nothing's gonna look bad on television.
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: Just the best camera shot. It would've done some extra
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: time editing, but we wanted wrestling to be, instead of
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: the 20 and 30 minute matches, one hour time limits,
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: we thought 20 minutes was plenty of time for a
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: match to just pick up the pace you know, and
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: just make it more intense. And I think our shows
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: were like that. I'm proud of them. I'm proud of
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: all of our shows. And my brothers, and especially Dave
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: and I, and Dad had a great idea one time,
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: and it was going to be to put our new
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: style of wrestling on the show. And it was great.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: We had a great TV rating, and Vince offered us
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: a big part of his, half of his company up
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: there to come in with him. And I sat there
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: with my dad and my dad said, nope, what's in
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: it for us? And you never disagree with family in
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: a business meeting. But I was thinking, he's got everything
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: we need, dad, everything we need. But dad wouldn't go,
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: wouldn't go with him. To partner with WWE, you mean?
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: Wow. And they were going to let Dad keep San
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: Antonio and Dallas too. But who knows, huh? Yeah. Who
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: knows what would have happened. Yeah. Because there's many a
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: slip twixt the cup and the lip, you know. But,
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: I mean, we would have been ready. We'd have jumped
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: all over that because we're little boys that had seen
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: it for a whole life, and we just knew how
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: to make it better. We'd watch the NFL, you know,
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: and the slow motion, the collisions and all, and concerts
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: with the lasers and all the music, the way it
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: fills you out of your chair, you know. We had it.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: We had how we wanted to do it. So, you know,
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: that didn't come about, but we had a great time
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: aiming at it.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and who knows? Maybe things would have been different,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, you guys, yeah.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: I mean, I just, yeah. I mean, on behalf of like, yeah,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: any kid that was like me, I mean, the second
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: you guys, they put the name on the screen or
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: it's just, man, it was awesome, dude. You felt like
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: everything was possible. You could fucking rip the drywall out
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: of the living room. You could fucking do whatever you.
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: Wanted, dude.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: You knew mom was coming home in an hour and
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: a half, but you had 90 minutes until she got
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: there where you were free as a bird, boy. I'd
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: break every damn chair we had and then spend the
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: next two hours gluing them bitches back together for dinner, dude.
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: You would have loved to step in the business. I
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: know you would have liked it. You would have loved it. Well, Kevin, man,
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: thanks so much, dude. We got a show tonight. Yeah,

- 1:49:51Speaker 1: Yeah, tonight I'll be busy, but you know what? I
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: think I'm going to be down to Austin in September.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: Oh, you are? Shoot, call me up, man. That's what
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: I'm saying. I'll show you Texas.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: When I am, I'll come out and see the ranch, man.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: Do it. That would be cool. That would be, man.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: What plants do you guys have out there?
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: What plants?
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: Yeah, do you plant any avocados or anything like that
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: here in Texas or no?

- 1:50:20Speaker 2: I say that, I went to Israel, you know, it's
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: on the 33rd degree ladder from the equator. I mean,
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: that's way far north. They have mangos there, papayas. I
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: couldn't believe it. Yeah, they got everything. Can't grow that
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: in Texas.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't grow that in Texas, huh? Yeah. But

- 1:50:43Speaker 1: Kevin, thanks so much for your time, man. Just thanks
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: for you and your family. Just all the enjoyment and
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: excitement and invigoration and possibility over the years. I think
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: it's inspired a lot of people and was so much
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: fun as a kid. Just fucking when you guys came
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: on the screen, just getting to be a Von Erik
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: for a few minutes.
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: It was fun, man. It was a lot of fun.
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: I'll think about it. And, you know, when you get
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: some stress built up, you know, you can just get
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: in the ring and kick ass.
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: That's a motto for life, guys.
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: Those days are gone. But they're pretty close in our minds,
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: you know. Yep, right there.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: You can still feel them right on the edge of
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: your skin sometimes.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: Dang right.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Dude, I'll beat the shit out of somebody in the
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: lobby here if we need to.
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: Well, let's find a quiet spot, and I'll take you
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: down somewhere, and we can make a little news. All right.
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: Kevin, my dear, thanks so much, man.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: My pleasure, buddy.
