- 0:15Turn the rig around. Go back for her. No.
- 0:20Tell him to turn the rig around. Did you see it? She went under the wheels.
- 0:24Did you see it? She went under the wheels.
- 0:28We keep moving. No. We keep moving. Nobody's talking about.
- 0:33All right, guys, we're back with our Mad Max retrospective with Fury Road.
- 0:39That's right. I believe this is 35 years later Since We had the dreadful,
- 0:46Dreadful dreadful And I don't know if I said dreadful enough Mad Max Beyond
- 0:51the Thunder Well your math as you would say is dreadful Because it's actually
- 0:5430 years exactly 30 years,
- 0:57Since I added 5 more years,
- 1:01Just because Mad Max Beyond Thunder don't add 5 years onto our lives when watching
- 1:05it Yes there you go that's perfect There you go Now, you know,
- 1:10but George Miller got on him, went on to do other things.
- 1:14Lorenzo's loyal, I think he did, which was well-received. Obviously,
- 1:18Oscar nominated for Babe, Pig in the City, then Babe 2.
- 1:21No, it was Babe, then Babe, Pig in the City.
- 1:23Then he did Happy Feet. Kind of a plea off course to what you were used to seeing
- 1:28George Miller do. Children's films, basically.
- 1:31Yeah, I mean, he got on him. That's cool.
- 1:34And so, and really, actually very well-received. I'm glad you did that.
- 1:39I'd like to see a director branch out.
- 1:41And so when he announced he's coming back to the Mad Max franchise,
- 1:46a little concerned because we all know how I feel about Mad Max 3.
- 1:50I felt he's kind of a cop-out and kind of sold himself out, unfortunately.
- 1:55But seeing Fury Road, this man is just a visionary. I mean, Jesus.
- 2:02I watched this again, and I watched this in Furiosa back-to-back.
- 2:08And they're just, they're beautifully executed stories.
- 2:14And I had a big thing for Furiosa and I watched it, and I've watched like four or five times.
- 2:20And I'm a little more removed from it as much as I really liked it when I first saw it.
- 2:28But it's got some wonderful elements. But I think you need to watch Fury Road
- 2:33and then Furiosa back-to-back to really get the rush that I just experienced.
- 2:39I mean, I've watched Fury Road quite a few times myself as well.
- 2:43But I hadn't watched it in a couple of years whenever I went to see Furiosa for the first time.
- 2:49And I was thinking to myself, self i think in certain ways furiosa
- 2:52this is at the time after seeing furiosa i felt
- 2:55that possibly furiosa was better and i was
- 2:58still thinking in some aspects like characterization and story
- 3:02it's it slightly shades it with fury road however
- 3:05then i re-watched fury road for this
- 3:08podcast that we're doing now and it's incredible and it's definitely yeah overall
- 3:14better yeah i mean i i will say this I did say that I still think The Road Warrior
- 3:23is the better of all the films of the Mad Maxes.
- 3:26And after watching Fury Road again, I'm going to stick with what I said.
- 3:31And I actually think Mad Max fans would agree with us that Road Warrior,
- 3:36because it's a little more gritty and grounded, where this is just a fucking rock opera.
- 3:41And I haven't watched it in a couple of years, but let's just jump into it and talk.
- 3:47Well, doing my homework for the podcast as well, aside from,
- 3:52you know, watching it again,
- 3:53I know that a lot of other big name directors were, you know,
- 3:58basically whenever they met George Miller,
- 4:00they were basically gobsmacked how on a technical level he filmed it without
- 4:05multiple people dying. It's unreal. It is.
- 4:11This is, and I said once before, this is a masterpiece in filmmaking. It is five out of five.
- 4:21Nothing can touch this film. Nothing. I know it sounds weird,
- 4:25but I still think World War is a better film and World War isn't a masterpiece,
- 4:29but I think that's why it's better.
- 4:32I think it's got its flaws because I like the independent rawness where this
- 4:37one has got a big studio backing and that's fucking great.
- 4:39If you want a studio backing and you give us this fucking film, work away, please do.
- 4:4580% practical, 80%. Yeah.
- 4:48And he says the only. According to, well, according to some reports I've read,
- 4:5190%. Well, the sandstorm and the, you can see a little bit, but when you do
- 4:58CGI with practical, this is how you fucking do it.
- 5:02And when I watched Fury Road of Furiosa, I can see Furiosa taking a little too
- 5:08much of the CGI but we'll jump.
- 5:10Yes there's a particular scene in Furiosa which we'll get to on that podcast.
- 5:13We'll jump into that, we'll jump into it.
- 5:15Let's jump in to Fury Road and just have a good time and make some jokes and
- 5:23just enjoy this fucking visual treat.
- 5:27This is spectacle. It's unreal.
- 5:29I just you get chills watching it. It's just fucking. I guess that's the end of our podcast.
- 5:37Yeah, but this is basically the road warrior with a shit load of the budget
- 5:44thrown at it. Yeah, but done right.
- 5:45That's what I'm saying. If you're going to do it and you're going to do big studio backing, wow.
- 5:52And the great thing about Warner Brothers backing this up, they kind of left
- 5:56him alone because some of the shit this guy gets away with just... Okay.
- 6:01Well, it goes back to even what we were talking about in the original Mad Max.
- 6:06And even though it's big budget and there's like millions of dollars thrown
- 6:10at it, it still feels in a way like guerrilla film. It does,
- 6:14like they left him alone. Is it seeing? Here you go. Do your thing.
- 6:18We're turning a blind eye.
- 6:21Yeah. All right, guys, we're going to jump into this one.
- 6:24So, again, it wouldn't be a Max film without our boy Max and the rest of this wonderful cast.
- 6:32Furiosa, Knox, Immortan Joe, Slit, Rictus Rectus, Toad the Knowing,
- 6:37the Dag, Cheeto the Fragile, the Peep Leader, the Bullet Farmer,
- 6:41And of course, my favorite guitar player of all time The Doof Warrior The Doof Warrior,
- 6:47yep One of my favorite A couple of them actually pop up again In Furiosa Yes, Rictus and Rectus Yeah,
- 6:56they all Kind of come back, and Morton Joe,
- 6:59And the guy, the organic Mechanic Yeah, you see, Wade switches teams But we'll
- 7:06jump into that one Yes, we'll find out how, yeah,
- 7:10Yeah, I mean, the opening scene alone is, it's just, it's so good.
- 7:19It's just one big, I don't know.
- 7:23So in the beginning here, you know when you're seeing Max?
- 7:29Yes. And he's taking a whiz. Yeah. I love the little scene, the little gecko,
- 7:33whatever the fucking thing is.
- 7:34He eats it. And he eats it. He doesn't even really touch it.
- 7:37He just kind of grabbles it into his mouth.
- 7:40And and they when we're introduced to him he turns to the
- 7:43camera we can see him with the tail and it's still moving and shit just eats
- 7:46it raw and alive and he's also i believe before he does that i think that he's
- 7:51like being eaten dog food again which again is a big tip of the hat he's driving
- 7:55the interceptor so yeah this is we've discussed this outside of this podcast,
- 8:01this is not a direct sequel to the original trilogy this is a reboot and a new
- 8:07universe Miller's basically admitted it.
- 8:09I don't think he has admitted it. I think you're wrong.
- 8:12I don't think it is. No, I've read up on it. I don't care. Well,
- 8:15you've got to realize, some of these reviews, until George Miller gets on and
- 8:18says no, because he still has the leg wound, he still has the same leg brace.
- 8:24You didn't notice that, did you? Well, this is George Miller being quoted hard, true or not, it is.
- 8:29I probably think too much about these things, but I was trying to piece everything
- 8:34together in terms of the overall story.
- 8:38If it is a direct sequel, if it is, it would have to be set before the Road
- 8:44Warrior because he still has the Interceptor.
- 8:47And so yes it doesn't really add
- 8:50up and it does appear to be the things like
- 8:53you know the knee brace and stuff like that that are
- 8:57they're basically more like references
- 9:00to the original trilogy now i
- 9:03would say i was wrong about something you know the way he has the flashbacks to
- 9:07like a young girl being sort of
- 9:09killed and stuff apparently i thought well in
- 9:12this one he has a daughter but in the original trilogy he has a son
- 9:15but apparently that's a completely different character apparently this
- 9:18was followed up in official comic books or
- 9:22graphic novels related to fury road apparently these
- 9:25nightmares that he's having are a young woman and her daughter who he tried
- 9:30to see it but couldn't but weren't related to him okay i didn't take it like
- 9:35we mentioned before mad max are one-off films they all are they don't really
- 9:40bleed onto each other these next two do a little bit,
- 9:43well the original three definitely bleed into each other you know they follow
- 9:47one especially the first two,
- 9:49nah you can watch them separate I mentioned that before oh yeah definitely watch
- 9:52them separate you can watch them separate but you don't need to watch World
- 9:55Warrior to know who Mad Max is,
- 9:56yes I know that but for someone like me who's pedantic and thinks about these
- 10:02types of things way too much you do and you're losing our listening audience
- 10:06now because of it thank you.
- 10:10And also i'm with a new actor playing max due
- 10:13to you know mel gibson for several reasons
- 10:16not coming back to the role and you
- 10:20know what i like i really like tom hardy and i
- 10:22really like him in this but to me mel is
- 10:26max and i would love to see mel while george miller and mel gibson are still
- 10:31with us i would love to see them get together for another mad max film that
- 10:36won't happen now you've planted a seed of hardy sadly we'll get into furiosa
- 10:40what happened the box office numbers i don't think we'll ever get one now we
- 10:43might no we'll probably won't but we'll see.
- 10:48I don't know, it'd be kind of cool to have like a crossover,
- 10:51have even Mel come back as the bad guy or something, and have Tom Hardy come back as Max.
- 10:57That'd be kind of like a passion, a true passion of the torch,
- 10:59I think is what's owed them. I do think Mel Gibson's owed that.
- 11:03Yeah, well, they did something similar with Immortan Joe in that they brought
- 11:08the toe cutter back to play him,
- 11:09you know, obviously playing a different character. That's not the same.
- 11:13I mean, it's not, I'm just, yeah, but that's, nobody really,
- 11:16really i mean yeah it's cool it's cool that he's back
- 11:19but it's not the same as mel gibson passing
- 11:22the torch tom hardy you know yeah that's a
- 11:25mean that should be done so i
- 11:28don't know if that's studio involvement but it can't be warner brothers fault
- 11:32because warner brothers backs up he they produce a lot of mel gibson's directing
- 11:36stuff so well i do know that mel gibson and george miller are still on very
- 11:41good terms and in fact they were sitting beside each other at the premiere year of this film,
- 11:46whenever it was first released, nine years ago. There you go.
- 11:49And maybe he did talk to him and say, do you want to do it? And you're like,
- 11:51ah, fuck, I don't know. Yeah. You just never know. You never know what conversations
- 11:55happen trying to close doors.
- 11:56All right, guys, let's just jump into this. We're kind of going ranting there.
- 12:00I apologize for Trevor's rant. That's not a rant.
- 12:05I thought it was. Well, yeah. Yes.
- 12:09You haven't seen me rant yet. So you pretty much get Max being chased And then
- 12:14he's ambushed and taken down pretty quickly in his little cool car,
- 12:18which we see get destroyed in again by the, uh, the synodals.
- 12:25Yeah. The war boys, the warrior boys, war boys, the warrior boys,
- 12:30the war boys, just like W A R no, they're not.
- 12:37Nope. Just war boys. It's not warrior boys. It's war boys, war boys.
- 12:41Promise you. I'm looking this up right now, everyone. How can I make you look
- 12:44bad? Yeah. Free roll nuts.
- 12:49Oh, Jesus Christ. I don't need a Funko Pop of them, for Christ's sake.
- 12:52I just want to know who the character is. For fuck's sake.
- 12:55Type in War Boys, Miles Max. All right, here we go. Boom.
- 12:59Well, I can see where you made a mistake. I can see where you made a mistake. I'm right.
- 13:04I was trying to trip you up on purpose.
- 13:09No, you are. So fuck off. So I did that on purpose, but it's war boys.
- 13:14That's what I had, but I was just trying to see if you were paying attention.
- 13:19I pay too much attention. You get a golden star for this podcast. Congratulations.
- 13:28I'd like the film. The film pretty much opens up right away with Furiosa trying to escape.
- 13:34Yes. With the ladies.
- 13:37And the war rig. In the war rig. or
- 13:40a rig and I just love the colors of
- 13:43this everything everything pops and I love
- 13:47the flares and how the flares worn each the
- 13:50gas town would be a perfect example or bullet town we don't really see bullet
- 13:55town on this one but gas town we obviously do and yeah they that's to let them
- 14:00know trouble's coming we have we have run away or whatever it's just the way of signaling I
- 14:07believe green means go, red means watch out.
- 14:11I didn't get all the colors, but I think you can kind of get the idea of what they mean.
- 14:16Oh yeah. You get more of the idea of what the colors mean in Furiosa,
- 14:19which was obviously really get to, but the first attack on it's when the bandits,
- 14:27this kind of, these aren't the, it's not Citadel coming after them first.
- 14:34It's the bandits who are always trying to get Get the oil from the truck And
- 14:38this whole first attack The stunt Well it's Originally it's the ones from the Citadel No it's not.
- 14:46The Citadel is behind them These guys
- 14:50are bandits These are just stragglers Who are trying to steal from the oil From
- 14:56the rig No the problem is No that's right but they come from the side So there's
- 15:01two groups chasing them But they're not just bandits Bandits, they had a deal with No,
- 15:07that's not them either. You're jumping ahead.
- 15:11Well, the ones chasing at first No, they're not.
- 15:15The Citadel's way behind them. The Citadel's way behind them.
- 15:18But they're just, she's just driving away.
- 15:21Alright? Then there's a splinter group trying to take over the oil.
- 15:25That's just a, you know, whatever, they're just a bunch of they're just a bunch of bandits, looters.
- 15:31They just want the truck. They have nothing to do with the Citadel.
- 15:36That's the first attack on this rig. Sorry, you're right, actually.
- 15:40But at the same time... Why are you arguing with me still? Now we're going to continue this.
- 15:44I'm trying to piece it together in my head because there is a lot going on despite
- 15:48there being very little dialogue and stuff. I'm just trying to piece it together in my head.
- 15:51Yes, they are attacked at first by these random guys.
- 15:56Sorry. You know what, Ciarán? I'm big enough to admit whenever I haven't quite
- 16:00got it right. Wow. Between this and the Warrior Boys. Wow.
- 16:05War Boys. War Boys. God, you're really embarrassing yourself on this podcast.
- 16:10Not at all. I was right with the War Boys. And yes, I'll admit that,
- 16:15yes, because this all happens in quite quick succession where these original
- 16:20bandits come and they try to attack them.
- 16:23They're basically like warriors themselves.
- 16:26And then it's noticed by Immortan Joe and the gang that they have basically done a runner.
- 16:32Yeah. So, because what happens, I'll clarify it because you're clearly misled
- 16:37and confused. I'm not misled. No, it's okay. You're older.
- 16:41So. You're older than me. I'm wiser. There's a difference. So.
- 16:46No. All right. Yeah. So the bandits come and this is why her team of the war boys are helping her.
- 16:55They don't realize yet that she's leaving. She's making a run of it.
- 16:59That's why they're helping her fend off these bandits. All right.
- 17:03And she has taken a turn to the left off the desert road.
- 17:07And she, like, says to them, she gives them some bullshit excuse that,
- 17:12yeah, and they are running with it at this point.
- 17:15So this whole first attack is...
- 17:20Is warranted. They're like, oh, we're doing our job. Let's protect the oil.
- 17:25And it's not until they run into the Citadel teams where they start to realize,
- 17:33what are you doing, Ukraine?
- 17:33And then she has to take them out because they're now going to be a threat because
- 17:37they know that she's betrayed them, betrayed Morton Joe. All right, so we got Max.
- 17:43God, this course is going way too long. Ah, fuck, I don't care.
- 17:48It's worth it. we get to the Citadel where we see Max and he's being tattooed,
- 17:53you know his blood type and stuff like that. I don't get the blood bang thing.
- 17:56Are they taking his blood? Are the war boys drooling on his blood?
- 18:01Yes Yes, because he's a full life and they're half-lives Part of this new universe
- 18:06in the Fury Road and Furiosa films is that due to the nuclear fallout essentially
- 18:13many people aren't well, they're basically
- 18:17genetically deformed you know like i'm
- 18:20screw this and stuff yeah and other sort of children of
- 18:23morton joe they're what are known as half-life but
- 18:27morton joe wants even in fury road
- 18:30here the reason he has these as he calls them
- 18:32the women breeders is because he's trying to get
- 18:36a child who is a full life and not
- 18:39basically a genetically mutated person like
- 18:43most of his other all of his other kids are so but
- 18:46due to the nuclear fallout there are most people
- 18:49certainly the ones born within it are half-lives they're
- 18:53genetically messed up and basically but there are sort of full lives out there
- 18:59like Furiosa who was born in the green place and also Mad Max but the war boys
- 19:05are all half-lives so or half-lives so but they're basically a drugged up cult,
- 19:10you know, brainwashed cult to go out and do the dirty work for a Morton Joe,
- 19:14but they need the blood of a full life, i.e.
- 19:20Max, in this case, to basically keep alive longer.
- 19:25So that's why he is just used as a blood bank in this chase,
- 19:29this opening chase for the war boy. Okay.
- 19:33Alright, so he's pretty much like a blood transfusion piece.
- 19:38Yeah. All right. Mm-hmm.
- 19:40Yeah, and then once Citadel does catch up with them, obviously you got Max,
- 19:44kind of a little throwback to being tied in front of the car like they did in The Road Warrior.
- 19:48Yeah. And he's got that, you know, handle electric thing going for him,
- 19:52which I didn't like. I thought they could have.
- 19:54I mean, I know the guy doesn't say much in the first place.
- 19:58I don't know. I just thought it was kind of distracting.
- 20:02No, I mean, it didn't bother me either way, you know? Not kind.
- 20:05But it does show Tom Hardy can sell it better because with Tom Hardy,
- 20:11you know, he's got to show his emotions through the mask and a lot of minding
- 20:16to get his point across because he can't properly speak.
- 20:19And he does speak. I'll say this. He puts on that accent. It does sound like Mel Gibson.
- 20:23Oh, yeah. Yeah. He does. And apparently him and Charlie's Theron did not get
- 20:29on well at all when filming this.
- 20:32Apparently a lot of that was down to Hardy. Well, I think all
- 20:35of it was down to Hardy being a dick and showing up
- 20:37late you know purposely showing up late on days
- 20:40shooting and stuff and he according to Hardy
- 20:43after he said because of all this
- 20:46that was going on he didn't actually know what the hell George Miller was doing
- 20:50so he was confused there might have been a bit of a power play there as well
- 20:53but afterwards after he's seen the finished product this film he got it he eventually
- 20:59got it and he actually apologized to Charlize Theron partly she was complete
- 21:04professional throughout out.
- 21:05Always there on time, never late, that sort of thing.
- 21:08But to be fair to Hardy, he apologised to Miller and Charlie Sterling for being
- 21:15a bit of an asshole. He's a true hero.
- 21:17Yep. True hero. He's a road warrior. We don't need another hero.
- 21:25Yeah, this whole chase is, again, the Citadel. I mean, again,
- 21:28we did this before on the podcast. Can't explain it. If you haven't seen it,
- 21:31you got to fucking watch it.
- 21:32I mean, and then I got to give a massive shout out. Brian Mays sadly passed.
- 21:37So they passed the baton to this gentleman called Tom Hulkenborg.
- 21:42He's known as Junkie XL. He does the score for the next two films.
- 21:46He's a DJ. He's a DJ. Yeah. Fucking amazing score.
- 21:50Do you remember about, I don't know if you, well, you would have been in the States at the time,
- 21:54but you remember there was an elvis song
- 21:58that come out again but it was like it was number one here in
- 22:01the uk it was a little less
- 22:04conversation a little bit rock and roll yeah that was that guy that did it and
- 22:07it was billed as elvis versus junkie xl oh that's cool that's cool it's good
- 22:15it's a cool cover oh yeah i think they did it for honeymoon in vegas yeah it's
- 22:21not even a cover It's actual, but it's just- Yeah,
- 22:23it's from Tweet. It's a remix. It's Tweet. Yeah, it's a remix.
- 22:25Yeah. But the score is just beautiful.
- 22:29I mean, it's just intense, and it's got that theme that it's almost like a revving of an engine.
- 22:34It's just, it's incredible.
- 22:37Oh, it's perfect? It's so good. Not
- 22:39to take away from Brian May's original stuff, but way, way to up a game.
- 22:44And there's some great little stuff here. I'm not going to talk about everything
- 22:48about it because it's the little things I like, like the warrior boy.
- 22:51There's one guy per guy gets speared in the chest and right through the face.
- 22:56And he decides, well, I'm going to self-sacrifice myself now. I'm pretty much dead.
- 23:01And obviously, he's got those poles and grenades and shit, and he jumps onto a car and it explodes.
- 23:08Self-sacrifice. Yeah. You get a lot of self-sacrifices in this film.
- 23:12So I'll be saying that quite a bit. And even when you meet the women coming
- 23:16up, and it's, you know, I talked about Road Warrior and how I really appreciated
- 23:21the Road Warrior a lot more because it had a lot of really cool characters and you really liked them.
- 23:25So when each one of them kind of got taken out You want to fuck But
- 23:29you know what this does it too Quite fucking well
- 23:32if not better And you only
- 23:35meet them For like a few moments But then you're
- 23:38like oh man that's pretty cool That you know this is what
- 23:41this character Is going to do to help out the team I would
- 23:45yeah well I would say About the self sacrifice Of the
- 23:48war boys it's because they are So brainwashed and
- 23:50drilled up By a Morton Joe you know with the Spray
- 23:54stuff that they use on their mouths house that's that's obviously the
- 23:56drugs that are taken but also they believe that even if
- 24:00they do self-sacrifice they're going to valhalla you know
- 24:03which is obviously bullshit that they've been told by a morton joe so they believe
- 24:07that they're like it's it's you know it's like suicide bombers and stuff they
- 24:11believe they're they're doing this for the greater cause and that they're going
- 24:14to heaven or a version of it so that's what the war boys think you know who
- 24:18is one of the well it's the
- 24:21character that has the greatest arc in this film, and it's not Mad Max, and it's not Furiosa.
- 24:25It's Nux. Nux, yeah. Played by the brilliant Nicholas Holt.
- 24:29Yeah. Yeah, Mad Max is Mad Max. I mean, that's just the way he's always been.
- 24:34Furiosa doesn't have one, because we already kind of know her story.
- 24:37So it's Nux is the guy who kind of has a journey.
- 24:43But yeah, this whole chase,
- 24:46and then it ends with this gorgeous sandstorm tornadoes and fucking it's unreal
- 24:54how beautiful the CGI mix with practical works and,
- 24:59you see all these carnage, all these cars being sucked up into these sandstorms,
- 25:04whatever it is, sand tornadoes. Yeah. And you see the bodies falling.
- 25:08It's so beautiful. It's like you should be like all this chaos is happening.
- 25:14And it's beautifully done.
- 25:16And the sparks of red and the sparks of orange and just these little pops and bursts.
- 25:24And the great thing is a lot of filmmakers,
- 25:27filmmakers they like this quick cut cinema and it does work
- 25:30in some things you especially get it in fight sequences where you
- 25:33quick cut quick cut you're like what the fuck just happened there what what what every
- 25:37every scene every tire every body
- 25:40that's in that car is seen being chucked out
- 25:43or every piece is being you see it
- 25:46and it's i i can't it's like a canvas it's
- 25:50like you know painter's canvas i would say
- 25:53regarding things like you know quick cuts and other films
- 25:56and action scenes a lot of the time that is to cover
- 25:59up um a multitude of errors but but
- 26:02here you see it all and it is it's it's beautifully done so
- 26:06it is with max when max wakes up after the crash and he this is where he meets
- 26:11furiosa and the girls and yes the real cargo of the of the war right yeah and
- 26:16the fight sequence between him and furiosa again no quick just the way it's
- 26:23it's It's almost like a ballet between these two.
- 26:26And trying to get the gun and trying to get the bullets.
- 26:28And then there's Nux trying to get him to get the bullets because Nux thinks
- 26:32Max is on his side. He doesn't realize what Furiosa.
- 26:35They're tight, him and Nux are sort of tight to each other still as well.
- 26:39Yeah, and he's still got the mask, which can be a dismay.
- 26:41So it's this dance that they have and then they quickly resolve what's going
- 26:46on that, you know, yada, yada, yada.
- 26:49And I do like the fact he takes the truck And he goes, he, and Fiora also tells
- 26:54the girls, girls grab everything you can and just run.
- 26:57And because she put a fail safe on the truck where it shuts down. Yeah. But.
- 27:03Zoe Kravitz playing one of the women as well, one of the breeders and also see
- 27:09the one with the red hair, just going back to. Yeah.
- 27:13Yeah. I know who it is. Elvis's granddaughter. Yeah. Rachel, no.
- 27:18Oh, my. Lisa Marie Presley's daughter. Is she Grookie or Grookie?
- 27:24Oh, no, she's one of the other ones.
- 27:27She's like the one who talks about, you know, nothing but a smug head, you know.
- 27:31But the one with the red hair is Elvis's granddaughter, the daughter of Lisa
- 27:35Marie Presley. No, that I'm right.
- 27:37That's Kyle. It's Riley Kroege or something like that.
- 27:42Right. Well, yes, he's very tall. Riley Keogh.
- 27:46Well, they're all tall. Riley, Riley, Riley Keogh, I think's her name.
- 27:49But that's, that's the one I'm talking about.
- 27:51Are you talking about the one with the blonde hair? The red hair.
- 27:54The red haired one. Yeah, that's who I'm talking about. And Zoe Kravitz there as well. Yeah, so.
- 27:59I mean, they don't really add. I mean, yeah. I just think they are stunningly
- 28:05beautiful. I mean, they're obviously models.
- 28:07It's just a great sort of counterpart to all the absolute chaos and the craziness
- 28:13of the rest of the wasteland.
- 28:14And they're even dressed in white Like angelic And you know Overall this is
- 28:22just Gorgeous just to look at From a visual point of view In every respect,
- 28:28This is very much A feminist film But it's not like.
- 28:35It's done In a sort of Mature way And a very well told way You know You know,
- 28:42which I have no issues with.
- 28:46So when they get to the cannons, the canyons, sorry. And this is where she had
- 28:51to deal with the motorbike gang.
- 28:53And they brought this little extra tank of gas, this little bubble of gas.
- 28:57Yeah. On the side that they're carrying along with them. They're going to give
- 29:00them that and you leave us alone.
- 29:02And it's great. I was a little confused where, well, they already give them the gas.
- 29:08So I don't. And she makes the comment, Max, you can't be seen because they'll think this is a trap.
- 29:15They only expect me to be here, so I need you to stay low.
- 29:20So why did they start attacking them? Because they were going to give them the gas.
- 29:26Because Furiosa lied. The cargo on the truck wasn't the petroleum,
- 29:33the gasoline, as they call it. It was the girls.
- 29:36Yeah, but no, but they brought, she, no, she got the tanker.
- 29:43Behind that tanker, there is another tanker.
- 29:48Yes. That was a tanker she was going to give them for the free pass.
- 29:52So why did they attack? I don't know.
- 29:54Because she betrays him and doesn't give them what she was meant to?
- 29:58Which was the gas, which he was. She got out of their truck and she was going
- 30:02to give it to him. All of a sudden they start shooting.
- 30:05Did I miss something? Did they catch Max or something? Maybe that's what it was.
- 30:10Possibly. But as far as I was concerned, she doubled back on her deal with them,
- 30:17which was very possibly for, well, they supplied her with gasoline.
- 30:21It was for some sort of cargo.
- 30:23I'm not too sure. but she had just basically lied to them to get a free pass,
- 30:29for her real plan, which was for her and the breeders, the girls, to escape.
- 30:36We're just going in circles. The reason they attack is because they know that
- 30:41she's basically betrayed them.
- 30:44I don't know how she's betrayed them. She's given them the oil. I don't get that.
- 30:47It is explained in the film. I have to watch it again. I must have missed the
- 30:51line, because then she goes, Max, she goes, Max, run.
- 30:56And then when he knew, she told him how to start the car, let's start the truck real quick.
- 31:01And so they must have saw one of the girls or something and the band is panicked.
- 31:07And that's what happened. It's one thing I can think of because she was going to give them the oil.
- 31:11But okay. But I think possibly they need the gasoline.
- 31:17I think she wants to hold on to the gasoline to make it to the green place.
- 31:21That's where they're heading to. They're trying to find it. I know that,
- 31:23but they have that extra, you're not, you're going, you're not listening to
- 31:26what I'm saying. You're going in circles.
- 31:28They have the oil separated to give to them. They've been carrying it.
- 31:33It's a little, it's a little round tank.
- 31:36So that was for them. She was going out to give that to them.
- 31:40I'm going to have to double check it. There's definitely a line.
- 31:42There's got to be a line that we missed.
- 31:44There is, there is. Furious explains it, but she, let's just say.
- 31:47No, she says, if they see you, Max, it's over. Yeah. Because they'll know something's up.
- 31:53So I didn't catch them glimpsing him. So I don't know what I missed.
- 31:58Let's move on. I'm sure people, if you know what it is, give us a shout.
- 32:03Let us know. Let us know. Yeah, and I might hit the way I read it,
- 32:07was basically she had in some way betrayed them, and that's why they attack.
- 32:13This, another chase scene was the bike, the bicycles.
- 32:17And I love the, just the, whoever comes up with these clever little escapisms,
- 32:23like when they set the front of the truck on fire.
- 32:26And so what they do is Max lowers the hydraulics, however it works,
- 32:31and the cow catcher in front of the truck scoops up all the sand and the sand puts out the fire.
- 32:38Stuff like that. And it's, it's, it's, and not only was he blue if he shot, it's innovative.
- 32:43It's clever oh totally and apparently and
- 32:46very technically yeah exactly you know exactly yeah but
- 32:50apparently this film was storyboarded before anything else
- 32:53which makes sense because this is such a
- 32:56visual film you add so much
- 32:58craziness and stunts and like proper over-the-topness that
- 33:02makes sense to have it storyboarded before anything else we're talking about
- 33:07nox and his little arc here you can't feel sorry for nox just because he's been
- 33:11brainwashed like you said and
- 33:13And there's a part where he finally comes one-to-one with Joe and he goes,
- 33:19you get on board that. He goes, I know how to get onto the truck.
- 33:23And he goes, you do that, you'll be in Valhalla, you know, with me.
- 33:27And, but the minute he gets on top of the truck, he trips up on his chain.
- 33:32It gets stuck. And then you can hear Joe going, idiot.
- 33:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. Yeah. so this is
- 33:39when basically joe abandons him and he then
- 33:42becomes well we'll get to it soon
- 33:44enough where he then sides with the girls
- 33:48and yeah he finds a lot of red flags and he
- 33:52starts wising up a bit but well this is this is
- 33:54about his journey from being in a religious cult to getting out of it and fighting
- 34:00for the the greater good and stay it you know yeah pretty much and hope to hope
- 34:07is brilliant actor anyway so he sort of perfect yeah he's a good actor he's good actor.
- 34:14I know, I know, but he's not Laurence Olivier here or Jimmy Stewart.
- 34:18I didn't say he was, but he can hold... He brings humanity to this role. Yeah, I know, he is.
- 34:24I like Nicholas Holt. Even when I saw him when he was a chubby little kid and
- 34:26about a boy, I really enjoyed.
- 34:28I've never seen that, and I don't want to see it. Why?
- 34:31Because it's Hugh Grant in a romantic comedy. So it's Hugh Grant.
- 34:34He's fucking awesome. You know what? You need to open your mind,
- 34:36you sick freak. That's it. I'm saying it right now.
- 34:40If it's not 18 or X, it sucks.
- 34:44Well, you know I have my things that I like Yeah, yeah, you're warmly demented
- 34:49If you want to watch Hugh Grant doing his floppy herd Yeah, yes,
- 34:53About a Boy is a fucking great film I haven't seen it to be fair Tony Collette
- 34:58is so good in it Oh, he didn't know that, you hate her?
- 35:01You always say, oh, well she must be a shitty actor because she's in About a Boy I was winding you up,
- 35:09I haven't seen About a Boy so I can't comment on it hateful bastard
- 35:12do you ever like sit down and go you know what god god
- 35:16i've just had a rough day and i just want to put a smile on my face i'm
- 35:19gonna watch you know i'm gonna watch like about a boy or even pretty woman so
- 35:22i'm just a just a let me finish please just just to brighten my day because
- 35:27it's been a rough one no you go home and go god i've had a rough day god i'm
- 35:32gonna put in i'm gonna put in teenage tit freaks and fucking i spit on your
- 35:37grave yeah that cheers me up no no No,
- 35:41no, when I've had a hard day and
- 35:43I want to chill out and relax and watch something nice and pleasant to me,
- 35:47I'll just dig out Hellraiser or The Evil Dead. You know what I mean?
- 35:51Something nice and some good family sort of wholesome viewing. Sick bastard.
- 35:57What do you watch? Squirtle Cowboy? There's a shot I really like,
- 36:02and it kind of humbles Max a bit.
- 36:04And then it takes it away from Max real quickly.
- 36:08And it's when the pregnant girl is on the side of the – and they have that famous
- 36:13– you're in the canyons, and they got this big rock sticking out,
- 36:16and she's about to be hit by it.
- 36:18And she ducks, but you think she got hit.
- 36:20And then Max sees that she made it, and Max gives her a smile and then a thumbs up.
- 36:25And then seconds later she gets shot and
- 36:29she she loses her balance and gets run over by a car and
- 36:32she's pregnant by the way and although it's it's
- 36:34tough and then max quick little quirk smile door
- 36:38like way to go girl is taken away
- 36:40from him just like that it's it's a really it's a
- 36:43quick it's a quick second but tom hardy
- 36:47sells it really well yeah and it's a totally emotionally powerful
- 36:50scene you know in terms of the
- 36:53emotion whereas before it's just like all these crazy stunts which
- 36:56are great but not only that because she is
- 36:59pregnant with a morton joe's child and enrages a
- 37:02morton joe and you see and you see the grief i like
- 37:05a warped grief on his face and that's when he gives that famous
- 37:08you know that you know like scream yeah
- 37:11because she is because she's carrying his his child and the
- 37:14organic mechanic has confirmed that the
- 37:17child will be a full life
- 37:20as opposed to a half-life you know yeah so he's even more in grief you know
- 37:26yeah because and then yeah and then and then rictus erectus he then says uh
- 37:30i had a little brother and i'm laughing but but even rictus erectus it's it's
- 37:37a very emotionally powerful scene all around for both the good Well.
- 37:40Then at the same time, you've got the flip side. You've got the good guys who's...
- 37:44Furiosa and, and she wants to go back and Max says, don't do it.
- 37:50No point. Don't go back for her. She's dead.
- 37:52And then she keeps yelling at him. Did you see her? And he just says,
- 37:56I saw her go under the wheels.
- 37:57That's all he has to say. I saw her go under the wheels. We need to move on.
- 38:01And then Furiosa believes him and goes, we have to move on girls.
- 38:03We can't go back. There's no point.
- 38:05And again, Charlie Sterling totally sells that. You just see it in her eyes, you know.
- 38:10She's tearing up and, and Max just has
- 38:13to kind of keep and tom hardy does exactly what mad max
- 38:16does he doesn't lose his temper he doesn't yell at
- 38:19her about it he just says i saw her go on her and that
- 38:22as yeah and then playing his day he just says it quietly because he didn't want
- 38:26to you know you know give him a given he just didn't want to give them a descript
- 38:30of what he just saw well not only that it's max himself has seen so much death
- 38:35and horrors stuff like that it's maybe not water of a duck's back to him but
- 38:39he's seen at all before, probably worse.
- 38:41And Nux finds out, you see a clip glimpse of when Joe sees Mad Max behind the
- 38:47wheel and the mechanic and all see Mad Max behind the wheel at this point.
- 38:52Nux now know that they know Mad Max was his blood bag, they called him.
- 38:58Yes. And he's, it's over for him.
- 39:01So he pretty much has to choose this side. Not that he really wants to at this
- 39:04point yet, but he's got to take, he's got to be a partner and now with Max because
- 39:09his partnership with Joe is gone.
- 39:12Yeah, but it's not until later on down the line, especially when he has the
- 39:16sort of relationship where there's a romantic tension between him and Elvis' granddaughter.
- 39:21Elvis' granddaughter? Yeah, well, that's who it is. It's not until later on
- 39:25down the line that he realizes he's chosen the right side, and then he eventually
- 39:32makes the ultimate sacrifice, not to get to Valhalla because he knows that's all bullshit,
- 39:36but he does it for the greater good for them. brilliant character arc,
- 39:40This whole sequence is beautifully shot and it's the sniper sequence, which I love.
- 39:46This is to me the best visually stunning and this whole film is visually stunning.
- 39:51But all it is, is it's like this blue fog, like haze and it's obviously almost,
- 39:56it's almost like a swampland, which we find out sadly is the paradise they were
- 40:01trying to get to, but they don't realize yet.
- 40:04We'll meet this place in Furiosa. but and
- 40:08before it became this shithole and
- 40:12there's such intensity of them trying to get this truck out and
- 40:15knox decides to jump on their wagon at this point going guys i can drive this
- 40:19truck i'm among the mechanics let me get you out of this and they have a sniper
- 40:25they're being snipered by this brilliant marksman and he can see it from the
- 40:28far far distance and they try to i love when
- 40:34And Max, he's got two more shots. And Furiosa's going, you got two more shots.
- 40:39And he goes, he pauses and he goes, you do it. Because he doesn't have the confidence
- 40:44that he can make the shot.
- 40:46And it's just little things like that I love in this sequence.
- 40:49And she puts obviously the gun on his shoulder as she's trying to take the shot.
- 40:52And she takes out his eyes, the gunman's eyes.
- 40:56That's right, she blinds him. Blinds him. But he's still coming.
- 40:59And they're just rapidly firing at everything now.
- 41:00So and then And he's giving a crazy speech as well Yeah he's just rambling,
- 41:06Something Tollcutter would do Yeah 100% yeah and totally perfect For the wasteland So Max just goes,
- 41:14I'll be back and he leaves And he takes something with him,
- 41:19Dynamite or something And then moments pass And all you hear is a faint explosion
- 41:24in the background And he comes running back He's covering blood and one of the
- 41:28girls says Oh my god you're bleeding And Fury also knows right away that's not his blood.
- 41:33Yeah. Just great. Didn't see anything. All you heard was the explosion. Yep, you didn't have to.
- 41:37That's all you needed. And he comes back looking like he's just slaughtered 20 people.
- 41:41Again, it's back to, as we talked about in the Road Warrior Mad Max 2,
- 41:46it's back to amazing show don't tell.
- 41:50Not even, let's say, we're just being shown the aftermath.
- 41:53It's just brilliant, brilliant visual storytelling by Miller,
- 41:57you know, who really knows his shit in terms of visual storytelling.
- 42:02Yeah, it's fucking master class.
- 42:05I mean, this guy's pretty much written his, what he did was pretty much create
- 42:09his own graphic novel, comic book wise.
- 42:12And then he's the one who, you know, from paper to page, I mean, from paper to screen.
- 42:18Yeah. So we get, we finally go to the sand dunes and we meet the women.
- 42:22These are women that she grew up with. Now, do you do Cats, do you do Cats Valkyrie was in this?
- 42:28Yes, it did. That's her, that's her sister that we meet in the beginning of
- 42:32Furiosa, which we'll talk about.
- 42:33That's right, yep. And she goes, how long has it been? She goes 7,000 days.
- 42:39Yeah. And then she goes, what about mom? She died on the third day.
- 42:43Yeah. Because I guess I read up on this. He actually wrote Furiosa before this.
- 42:49Yeah. Probably when he was writing this, he wrote a backstory.
- 42:52Yeah. Yeah. For her. Yeah.
- 42:55I love the old woman in this. Oh, that's what I'm betting. That's what I was
- 42:58talking about with all these characters of self-sacrificing and all,
- 43:01you meet these older women and these women have got balls, man.
- 43:05They're just, they don't give a shit. They're going to fucking,
- 43:08like the poor woman, the older one, I love the pole jumpers.
- 43:13They're called pole cats. I love the pole cats. Yeah.
- 43:16And she takes one of them out, but she gets stabbed in the meantime and she's
- 43:21dying. Yeah, she's in shock as well.
- 43:23She knows she's dying. Yeah. But she's not letting anyone, she won't let anyone
- 43:26know because there'll be a distraction to what's happening.
- 43:29I love the scene where they're all sort of, we're sort of getting their breath
- 43:33as the audience, but they're talking about what we'll do.
- 43:35It goes, well, there is no green place. You know what I mean?
- 43:38It goes, well, we'll have to get back, you know?
- 43:41And it's, you know, and then they're talking to Max and Max decides that he's
- 43:45going to stick with them and stuff. He goes, we'll have to get back.
- 43:48And, you know, he tells him how to do it. I go, I thought you went crazy anymore.
- 43:53Because Max has went through this journey where him and Furiosa,
- 43:55and Furiosa as well, are now, have become you know, they now trust each other type of thing.
- 44:03Yeah, so they have to go back. I watched this in the cinema.
- 44:05When this was first released, I watched this twice in the cinema.
- 44:08First time was with a friend. The second time was I brought my ma because it
- 44:11was so good. And my ma was just gobsmacked at how all this insane stuff going on.
- 44:16And then eventually they get to the other side, they bump into all these old
- 44:19women and decide, yeah, after all the hell we've been through,
- 44:23we're going to go back again.
- 44:24Well, he makes a good argument. He tells them.
- 44:27Oh, he's right. He goes, listen, you can sit there and go 1,700
- 44:30miles for an oasis that's not going to be there he goes
- 44:33i've seen this before and he's right i've
- 44:36seen this before so our best bet is
- 44:39now that the citadel is emptied with all the baddies because
- 44:42they're coming after us we bust through these guys we can take over the citadel
- 44:46and he's right it's it could be a one-way ticket but it's the best way around
- 44:51this yep the chances are they're gonna die either way so but their best option
- 44:57and he's right don't forget max is an ex-cop so you know,
- 45:00he's sort of, he's his head screwed on in many ways,
- 45:03despite his, you know, literally being Mad Max.
- 45:06So, yeah, it's the right decision. Plus, it gives us one hell of a cool finale.
- 45:12Jesus, that whole sequence where Max has to run to the back of the truck,
- 45:16cut down the harpoons that are holding back the truck.
- 45:18He then gets sucked by a pole cat.
- 45:21And then he's hanging by the side of the car, and Furiosa gets stabbed,
- 45:26and she's barely hanging on to him.
- 45:28Then Nux, I believe. Her lungs are collapsing. And then Nux fucking has to fucking flip him around to Mr.
- 45:35No-No. It's his car. He uses him as a human shield. And then Mr.
- 45:39No-No gets out of it. I mean, it's just, and again, but every shot, every shot is in chaos.
- 45:45Every shot, the way it's shot, it's so smoothly done, but it's chaos.
- 45:50It's fucking, it's just incredible. Yeah. Incredible.
- 45:53Plus, on top of all this, he has to fight hand-to-hand with Erectus,
- 45:58you know? yeah exactly but the great thing about that fight sequence the girls help him.
- 46:06Yeah, they all help each other. They all help each other. There's nobody hiding.
- 46:09All Zoe Kravitz gets, but then she ends up helping out.
- 46:13And it's just this gorgeous ballet. That's all I can call it.
- 46:19You know what this is? You don't know.
- 46:21Well, I would call it something maybe less grand, but I mean the exact same
- 46:25thing. It's basically big budget A-team.
- 46:28And trust me, I mean that in a nice, complimentary way. Oh, come on. I wouldn't say that.
- 46:33No, no. No, this is a compliment. Is it? I love the EA team.
- 46:38I mean... 100% it is. I love the EA team and how they banded together with these people in need.
- 46:44And bear with me, they banded together with these people in need to help them
- 46:49out for the greater cause and they made sacrifices and stuff.
- 46:52So I mean this 100, 1 million percent as a compliment, but this is just done
- 46:57in a more professional way, obviously, and with a much bigger budget.
- 47:02My other thing is when they're fighting and the Doof Warrior is playing his
- 47:06guitar and he goes, and the guy who played him says, yeah, that I,
- 47:11I, I just had a, I strum it and the fire would come out.
- 47:13He goes, but no, whatever's going around him, he's still fucking playing that
- 47:17guitar. That bastard playing his heart out.
- 47:21And I love how Furiosa just rips the mask off. And if you pause it,
- 47:25you can see the skeletal of the jaw.
- 47:28Those jaws get ripped off. Yeah, pretty much. But it's done so fast.
- 47:33Like I mentioned before, with his style, and we'll definitely mention Furiosa,
- 47:39his stuff seems like it's violent, but there's very little blood in these films.
- 47:44It's besides little wounds and stuff like that. And yes, you get people thrown
- 47:47out of trucks and stuff. Put them away, you know?
- 47:49And so it's it's not it's not gratuitous it's not gratuitous in any way it could
- 47:57come off uncomfortable but it's not gratuitous it's nothing like it's handled
- 48:02correctly by somebody who knows what they're doing yeah i.e george miller so
- 48:07and you know and then of course in mac style.
- 48:10Once furiosa gets there and she's going on
- 48:13the elevator she looks down at him and he disappears into the crowd
- 48:16and of course but but before that
- 48:19nox gives whenever he makes a self-sacrifice for
- 48:22them to get to the citadel you know by christian the
- 48:25the war rake he a brilliant touch again where you know the way the war boys
- 48:30their chant is witness me his final words are witness witness me but it's it's
- 48:36a completely different context where he is doing it not to get the of Valhalla
- 48:40for Immortan Joe on the walk with Immortan Joe,
- 48:43he's doing it for his humanity he's restored the humanity,
- 48:47and if you know this as well about Nox, see as this film progresses,
- 48:51his white warboy paint comes off him more and more, and you see more of,
- 48:56you know, his like real person, it's basically symbolic for his return to humanity,
- 49:02even though he's got a couple of wee fucking like, hard to get ahead in advertising
- 49:05freak things, hanging off you know, those boys that he's given names to.
- 49:11But yeah. There you go. Freerode, guys.
- 49:15Fucking complete opposite of that train wreck. We just talked about Mad Max
- 49:20beyond the Thunderdome.
- 49:21I said before, I'll say it. One of the greatest films of the 21st century so
- 49:24far. Yeah, I'll say it again. It's a masterpiece.
- 49:27Very few masterpieces out there. Sasha Gredemsen, Die Hard, Psycho,
- 49:31Jaws, It's a Wonderful Life, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Mad Max Freerode is going to be.
- 49:39It's just incredible. It is just master class.
- 49:44And I'm looking forward to talking Furiosa next because I just watched them
- 49:48back to back and it's just an adrenaline rush.
- 49:51And then you get, but I'll discuss that more when we talk Furiosa of how I felt
- 49:56at the very end of Furiosa.
- 49:57But wow. I hope because the box office, unfortunately the box office,
- 50:04which I don't, we'll talk about it in a minute here, Furiosa but I'm hoping
- 50:09that it finds its niche you know on sales and 4k and so forth and they get that
- 50:15little resurgence so Miller can complete I think there's a trilogy here and
- 50:19it's got to be with Hardy and I'd love to see.
- 50:22Charlize Theron come back as Furiosa it'd be really nice to see that.
- 50:27The one in the pipeline is going to be called Mad Max The Wasteland which was
- 50:32always in the pipeline since this one But the problem is it's now potentially
- 50:37up in the air because of the poor box office performance of Furiosa.
- 50:42Yeah. But we'll talk about that when we talk Furiosa.
- 50:47Listen, guys, thanks for this. We've been a little longer one.
- 50:50Again, I do apologize for getting it out late.
- 50:53And we got a busy time coming up. We got both. We got the wrap up the Mad Max
- 50:57Furiosa. We got the two Beetlejuices coming out.
- 51:00And then we hit Horror Month. month, we've got most of the titles picked,
- 51:04but as you probably already know, it's going to be Smile 2.
- 51:07Oh God, we got to revisit Smile.
- 51:11Me and Trevor hated it, but it'd be interesting to see if they fixed what we
- 51:16hated about it. So we'll be doing that one.
- 51:19Salem's Lot, finally, the reboot is getting released on digital demand, October 5th.
- 51:25And we're also to be doing a great special with screenwriter Pete Atkins in
- 51:31regards to one of my favorite Guilty Pleasures, Whismaster.
- 51:34He'll be live while we're doing that review.
- 51:36So it'll be kind of fun to see now from page to screen.
- 51:41And then those ones will be recorded in October.
- 51:44And then we're also going to be doing Founder's Day, a little slasher film that
- 51:48I thought was quite fun in the vein of movies like Scream.
- 51:52We're also going to be doing the Amityville Horror as we need to get back to our 70s classics.
- 51:58And I think that's all we got right now. Now, do you got anything you want to add?
- 52:02No, that's about it from me. Yeah. Yeah. Until next time, folks,
- 52:07when we talk Furiosa. Here we are.
