Speaker 1: Let us pray. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
• 0:05
Speaker 1: he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head
• 0:10
Speaker 1: and gave up the ghost. John 19.30 Thank you, Jesus,
• 0:17
Speaker 1: for carrying your cross up the hill. When my moment comes,
• 0:22
Speaker 1: I will be like Simon, and I will take the
• 0:25
Speaker 1: weight of your cross upon my life until I complete
• 0:29
Speaker 1: my mission here on earth. reflecting on the most holy
• 0:33
Speaker 1: of moments. Like Jesus, I give my life to you, God,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: as a living sacrifice. May you use my life to
• 0:43
Speaker 1: bring your name glory as long as I am breathing.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: In the same way that Jesus brought hope to the
• 0:51
Speaker 1: thief on the cross in the midst of his pain,
• 0:55
Speaker 1: so too will I bring hope to others, even when
• 0:59
Speaker 1: I feel the burden of life's challenges. I will remember
• 1:04
Speaker 1: that the greatest act of devotion to you, God, is
• 1:07
Speaker 1: to bring people into the knowledge of your saving grace
• 1:11
Speaker 1: and forgiveness. Through your death and burial, Jesus, you put
• 1:17
Speaker 1: into action the greatest chess play in all the cosmos.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Through your death and burial, you have given us the
• 1:25
Speaker 1: ultimate checkmate over Satan and his plans. The best is
• 1:31
Speaker 1: yet to come. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for

Speaker 2: Jesus' Death and Burial In our last story, Jesus was
• 2:01
Speaker 2: taken before Pilate and brutally beaten. The crowd demanded Jesus
• 2:06
Speaker 2: be crucified. Pilate, who knew Jesus was innocent, washed his
• 2:11
Speaker 2: hands clean and released Jesus to be crucified. In this story,
• 2:15
Speaker 2: we will learn about the death and burial of Jesus
• 2:19
Speaker 2: as inspired by the Gospels.

• 2:56
Speaker 3: slash stress. In our previous episode, we heard how Jesus
• 3:00
Speaker 3: went before Pilate, the Roman ruler, and though no fault
• 3:03
Speaker 3: was found in him, the religious leaders clamored for his death,
• 3:08
Speaker 3: insisting that Pilate send him to the cross and release
• 3:11
Speaker 3: a criminal named Barabbas. Jesus was beaten, humiliated, mocked, tortured,
• 3:17
Speaker 3: yet he remained silent, willing to fulfill God's purpose for
• 3:21
Speaker 3: his life. Today we'll hear as Jesus goes to the
• 3:25
Speaker 3: cross and the final words that he says as the
• 3:27
Speaker 3: sin of the world bears its full weight on his shoulders.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: So let's listen now to the reading of God's word.
• 3:36
Speaker 2: The day grew dim and clouds began filling the skies.
• 3:41
Speaker 2: Jesus was given a cross to carry up the trail
• 3:43
Speaker 2: of Calvary. A hundred pound piece of wood carving a
• 3:47
Speaker 2: deeper hole into his already exposed back. Jesus carried his
• 3:52
Speaker 2: cross up the hill towards the place he would die.
• 3:55
Speaker 2: After losing blood and oxygen, Jesus collapsed to the ground
• 3:59
Speaker 2: with the cross. Unable to carry it himself, a soldier
• 4:03
Speaker 2: took a man named Simon from the crowd and had
• 4:06
Speaker 2: him carry Christ's cross for him up the hill. Some
• 4:10
Speaker 2: cried for his death. Others cried to not have him die.
• 4:14
Speaker 2: Thousands of people followed Jesus up that hill to watch
• 4:17
Speaker 2: him be crucified. Many mourned for him that day. Yet
• 4:22
Speaker 2: underneath the blood and sweat, Jesus walked with joy towards
• 4:25
Speaker 2: the cross, knowing what it would accomplish. Legs trembling, blood dripping,
• 4:31
Speaker 2: and lungs gasping for air, Jesus made his way to
• 4:34
Speaker 2: the place of the skull where he would be crucified.
• 4:38
Speaker 2: Soldiers grabbed him and laid him down onto the cross.
• 4:42
Speaker 2: One by one they hammered nails into his wrists and feet.
• 4:46
Speaker 2: and raised the cross up high for everyone to behold
• 4:49
Speaker 2: his suffering. Crucifixion was designed to be a slow and
• 4:53
Speaker 2: painful death. For hours men would gasp for air by
• 4:57
Speaker 2: pulling up on their feet and wrists that had nails
• 5:00
Speaker 2: driven through them. Slowly, Jesus began to breathe and look
• 5:04
Speaker 2: upon the crowd, and the people stood by watching. But
• 5:09
Speaker 2: the rulers scoffed at him, saying, He saved others, let
• 5:13
Speaker 2: him save himself if he is truly Christ. The soldiers
• 5:18
Speaker 2: also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine
• 5:21
Speaker 2: and saying, If you are the king of the Jews,
• 5:24
Speaker 2: save yourself. Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them. They do not
• 5:32
Speaker 2: know what they are doing. The soldiers took his clothes
• 5:36
Speaker 2: and divided it up between them by casting lots, which
• 5:39
Speaker 2: fulfilled the prophecy that said that they would do so.
• 5:46
Speaker 2: Pilate had a sign made in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek,
• 5:50
Speaker 2: so that all the people can read it walking by,
• 5:52
Speaker 2: which says, Jesus, the King of Jews. This disturbed the Jews,
• 5:57
Speaker 2: yet Pilate would not remove it. Jesus' cross was placed
• 6:02
Speaker 2: beside two thieves. One mocked Jesus, saying, Are you not
• 6:07
Speaker 2: the Christ? Save yourself and us if you are so powerful.
• 6:12
Speaker 2: But the other thief swiftly rebuked him, saying, Have you
• 6:15
Speaker 2: no fear of God? We are getting what we deserve
• 6:18
Speaker 2: hanging here, yet this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, please,
• 6:23
Speaker 2: remember me when you enter into your kingdom. Jesus answered
• 6:27
Speaker 2: and said to him, Truly, today you will be with
• 6:31
Speaker 2: me in paradise. Jesus then looked down toward his mother,
• 6:38
Speaker 2: who was sobbing inconsolably. Jesus, in one of his final acts,
• 6:43
Speaker 2: turned to John, one of his most beloved disciples, and said, Son,
• 6:48
Speaker 2: behold your mother. And he charged John to look after
• 6:52
Speaker 2: his mother. Darkness had now enveloped the skies completely, as
• 6:57
Speaker 2: if preparing for what was about to occur. Nine hours
• 7:01
Speaker 2: had passed on the cross, and Jesus looked up to heaven. Eloi! Eloi!
• 7:08
Speaker 2: Lema sabachthani! He cried, which means, My God! My God,
• 7:14
Speaker 2: why have you forsaken me? For in that moment the
• 7:17
Speaker 2: eternal bond between the Father and the Son was severed,
• 7:20
Speaker 2: and the sins of all mankind were thrust onto Jesus
• 7:24
Speaker 2: as a tsunami does to the shore. Then Jesus yelled
• 7:28
Speaker 2: out one more time, Father, I give you my life.
• 7:33
Speaker 2: It is now finished. Then he gave his spirit to
• 7:38
Speaker 2: the Lord, the one who with a word spoke light
• 7:41
Speaker 2: and life into existence forever. spoke his final word. The
• 7:46
Speaker 2: same lungs that breathed life into mankind in the Garden
• 7:49
Speaker 2: of Eden exhaled their final breath. Immediately, the curtain that
• 7:55
Speaker 2: hung in the temple was torn in half, symbolizing the
• 7:58
Speaker 2: tearing of Jesus' flesh, removing separation from man and God forever.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: The ground began to shake and the skies poured forth rain.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Rocks were split in half and for a moment the
• 8:10
Speaker 2: dead walked among the earth in darkness. The earth itself
• 8:14
Speaker 2: was mourning the death of its creator. A Roman commander
• 8:19
Speaker 2: saw these things happen and gasped in awe. Truly, this
• 8:24
Speaker 2: man was the Son of God, he said. After the
• 8:27
Speaker 2: chaos had passed, they brought Jesus down from the cross.
• 8:32
Speaker 2: The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to be
• 8:34
Speaker 2: left up during the Sabbath, so they asked Pilate to
• 8:38
Speaker 2: let the bodies be taken down. They took the criminals down,
• 8:42
Speaker 2: broke their legs, and then moved on to Jesus. It
• 8:45
Speaker 2: was obvious that he was dead. So they instead pierced
• 8:49
Speaker 2: him with a spear, and blood and water came out
• 8:52
Speaker 2: of his body. This fulfilled the scripture that Jesus' bones
• 8:56
Speaker 2: would not be broken. And another scripture states that his
• 8:59
Speaker 2: body will be pierced. Joseph, a wealthy follower of Jesus,
• 9:05
Speaker 2: asked Pilate for his body. He feared the Jewish leaders,
• 9:09
Speaker 2: so when Pilate agreed, he took the body quickly. Nicodemus
• 9:13
Speaker 2: brought myrrh and aloes, and they both wrapped his body
• 9:16
Speaker 2: with these elements and linen. They then placed Jesus in
• 9:20
Speaker 2: a new tomb that no one had ever been in
• 9:22
Speaker 2: near a garden. This was the day of preparation, and
• 9:26
Speaker 2: because the tomb was close, they placed Jesus there. In
• 9:31
Speaker 2: the darkness of the tomb, the Son of Man laid
• 9:33
Speaker 2: his head. His followers, the city, and the whole earth
• 9:38
Speaker 2: were in mourning. Sadness gripped the hearts of all who
• 9:42
Speaker 2: loved him. and grief overcame them for a short while.
• 9:46
Speaker 2: There was no knowledge of what was yet to come.
• 9:53
Speaker 3: In today's reading, Jesus is walking the way of the cross.
• 9:58
Speaker 3: It's known now as the Via Dolorosa. With the beam
• 10:01
Speaker 3: of the cross on which he was to die weighing
• 10:04
Speaker 3: heavily on his shoulders, Jesus walked towards Calvary. His body
• 10:08
Speaker 3: was already beaten and bloodied and now he was forced
• 10:11
Speaker 3: to carry the symbol of guilt and shame through the
• 10:13
Speaker 3: city with people yelling and screaming and spitting at him. Finally,
• 10:18
Speaker 3: the Lord collapses under the weight of the cross and
• 10:21
Speaker 3: a man named Simon was pulled from the crowd and
• 10:23
Speaker 3: and made to carry the wooden beam the rest of
• 10:25
Speaker 3: the way. Jesus knew what awaited him when he arrived
• 10:29
Speaker 3: at the place called Golgotha, the place of the skull.
• 10:33
Speaker 3: Death would not come quickly or without pain. A crucifixion
• 10:37
Speaker 3: could last for hours, even days. His body would endure
• 10:41
Speaker 3: indescribable pain, but that would pale in comparison to the
• 10:45
Speaker 3: spiritual pain that he experienced on the cross. And yet
• 10:50
Speaker 3: Jesus continued step by step to accomplish God's plan of
• 10:55
Speaker 3: salvation for the world. He came to die, to rise again,
• 11:00
Speaker 3: that we might have eternal life. When he finally arrived
• 11:04
Speaker 3: at the hill called Calvary, Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God,
• 11:08
Speaker 3: was laid on the cross, arms open wide, and nailed
• 11:11
Speaker 3: down by his wrists and feet. The soldiers were experts
• 11:15
Speaker 3: in keeping people alive to expose them to the maximum
• 11:19
Speaker 3: amount of suffering. This was all described as a deterrent
• 11:23
Speaker 3: for other criminals. As Jesus was raised above the crowd,
• 11:27
Speaker 3: his weight hung on the nails, his flayed back rubbed
• 11:30
Speaker 3: against the rough-hewn wood of the cross, and he struggled
• 11:34
Speaker 3: even to lift himself to take the next breath. The
• 11:38
Speaker 3: way a person died on a Roman cross was by suffocation,
• 11:42
Speaker 3: drowning in one's own fluids. Raised up above the crowds,
• 11:47
Speaker 3: Jesus watched as the people mocked him even more, telling
• 11:50
Speaker 3: him to draw upon the powers of God and to
• 11:52
Speaker 3: save himself The soldiers joined in the insults, showing no
• 11:56
Speaker 3: regard for his suffering. This was cruel beyond imagination. And yet,
• 12:01
Speaker 3: as he looked on those who put him there, the
• 12:03
Speaker 3: Roman soldiers, the crowds of people, even the religious leaders
• 12:07
Speaker 3: who conspired to have him killed, his heart was not
• 12:10
Speaker 3: filled with anger or rage or hate, but indescribable and
• 12:15
Speaker 3: intense love and forgiveness. He prays, asking God to forgive them,
• 12:20
Speaker 3: for they did not know what they were doing. This
• 12:24
Speaker 3: was the end of the long road Jesus had walked,
• 12:26
Speaker 3: the culmination of his earthly purpose. He had known all
• 12:30
Speaker 3: along that many who once flocked to see him would
• 12:32
Speaker 3: turn away and that he would face death alone. Even
• 12:37
Speaker 3: his disciples would leave him. Still, he went there willingly
• 12:41
Speaker 3: to die for you and me. We heard how there
• 12:45
Speaker 3: were two men next to him, two convicted thieves, criminals
• 12:49
Speaker 3: who were not innocent. They were receiving their due penalty.
• 12:54
Speaker 3: One joined the mockers, failing to see Jesus for who
• 12:56
Speaker 3: he truly was. But one of the thieves, one of
• 12:59
Speaker 3: the men, surrendered his life to Jesus, asking him to
• 13:03
Speaker 3: remember him when he entered his kingdom. This man had
• 13:06
Speaker 3: no time left. No works could earn him God's favor
• 13:10
Speaker 3: or salvation. There was no church to join. There was
• 13:14
Speaker 3: no religious rites to perform. He was moments away from death,
• 13:18
Speaker 3: hopeless and helpless. And yet, because he turned to Jesus
• 13:22
Speaker 3: by faith, He heard Jesus reassured him of his eternal
• 13:26
Speaker 3: hope and home in heaven. Today, you will be with
• 13:29
Speaker 3: me in paradise. What happened to this thief on the
• 13:32
Speaker 3: cross reminds us that it's never too late for a
• 13:35
Speaker 3: new beginning and that there is nothing we can do
• 13:40
Speaker 3: to earn or deserve our salvation, but to put our
• 13:43
Speaker 3: lives in the nail-scarred hands of Jesus, that he and
• 13:47
Speaker 3: he alone can pardon us from our sins. Even in
• 13:51
Speaker 3: his moments of pain and suffering, Jesus, the glorious Savior,
• 13:56
Speaker 3: the good shepherd, continued to look upon those that he loved.
• 14:00
Speaker 3: He charged his disciple John with the care of Mary,
• 14:03
Speaker 3: his mother. As darkness descended on the land, Jesus knew
• 14:07
Speaker 3: there was still an even greater pain to face. The
• 14:10
Speaker 3: Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins
• 14:12
Speaker 3: of the world, felt the full weight of our sin
• 14:15
Speaker 3: on his back. And in that moment, he who knew
• 14:18
Speaker 3: no sin according to the Bible, became sin for us,
• 14:23
Speaker 3: that we might be made the righteousness of God. Every
• 14:28
Speaker 3: wrong thought, every action, impulse, desire, sinful desire of every
• 14:32
Speaker 3: man and woman who has ever lived and who will
• 14:35
Speaker 3: ever live was poured on Jesus that day as he
• 14:39
Speaker 3: hung upon the cross. His fellowship, perfect fellowship with the
• 14:43
Speaker 3: Father was broken in that moment, And he cried out
• 14:46
Speaker 3: these words that we find in Mark 15, verse 34.
• 14:50
Speaker 3: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? He
• 14:54
Speaker 3: was speaking the words of Psalm 22. And even in
• 14:57
Speaker 3: those words, as Christ acknowledged God's holiness, he was professing
• 15:01
Speaker 3: his trust in his heavenly father. Finally, Jesus gave up
• 15:05
Speaker 3: his spirit and breathed his last breath. It was finally finished.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: He cried out, it is finished, which means accomplished, paid
• 15:13
Speaker 3: in full. Tetelestai. is the word in the language of
• 15:17
Speaker 3: the Bible. Christ paid in full the debt of sin
• 15:21
Speaker 3: that we owed so that we could have eternal life.
• 15:24
Speaker 3: Our debt was paid in full. Jesus paid it all.
• 15:30
Speaker 3: At that moment, the curtain in the temple, a symbol
• 15:32
Speaker 3: of the separation between man and God, was torn from
• 15:35
Speaker 3: top to bottom. God himself had removed the great chasm,
• 15:39
Speaker 3: the barrier between himself and those created for himself. It
• 15:44
Speaker 3: was in that moment that Christ had come. It was
• 15:47
Speaker 3: for this moment, this miracle, that Christ had come, and
• 15:51
Speaker 3: now his purpose is fulfilled. The plan of salvation is complete.
• 15:55
Speaker 3: Satan is defeated, and salvation is now offered to all
• 16:01
Speaker 3: who believe and trust in Christ. As Jesus' body was
• 16:04
Speaker 3: laid to rest by the few that had remained to
• 16:07
Speaker 3: care for him, there was one great enemy yet to
• 16:10
Speaker 3: be defeated, and that is death. He would conquer death.
• 16:15
Speaker 3: There is grave sadness on that dark Friday and on
• 16:18
Speaker 3: that silent Saturday, but a joyous day was coming soon.
• 16:23
Speaker 3: A resurrection is promised. Dear God, we can never get
• 16:27
Speaker 3: over your love for us and what you endured for
• 16:31
Speaker 3: us that we might have your love and grace, salvation,
• 16:35
Speaker 3: and eternal life. We will praise you forever, dear Lamb
• 16:38
Speaker 3: of God, for all that you have done for us
• 16:40
Speaker 3: and continue to do for us. We remember that it
• 16:44
Speaker 3: is by your blood that we have redemption, salvation, and
• 16:49
Speaker 3: eternal life. So we trust in you. And just let
• 16:53
Speaker 3: me say to all who are listening right now, if
• 16:56
Speaker 3: there's never been a moment in your life when you
• 16:59
Speaker 3: have invited Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, this
• 17:03
Speaker 3: is your moment. This can be your miracle. He died
• 17:06
Speaker 3: for you. He rose again. The Bible says, believe on
• 17:10
Speaker 3: the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. which
• 17:13
Speaker 3: means that all your sins are forgiven, past, present, and future,
• 17:17
Speaker 3: that Christ is alive in you and that you have
• 17:20
Speaker 3: the hope of eternal life now and forever, that you
• 17:23
Speaker 3: will be with him in heaven when he comes for you.
• 17:26
Speaker 3: So place your faith and trust in Jesus now by
• 17:29
Speaker 3: receiving him, repenting of your sin, turning to him and
• 17:33
Speaker 3: trusting in him as your Lord and Savior. God bless you.
• 17:39
