- 0:33How's everybody doing?
- 0:34You know, we're doing… I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm a little pissed off this month
- 0:38Oh, I can't wait to hear this rant.
- 0:41I wanna come at this episode swinging, and I want you guys to talk me off
- 0:45the ledge, because I know we're wrapping up car week, we're getting
- 0:50ready to resume the Formula 1 season.
- 0:52August is just one of these blech kind of months.
- 0:55It's hot, it's gross, it's humid.
- 0:57Everything you can check off the list just sort of gets under your skin.
- 1:00But there have been so many posts this month, I have to ask
- 1:05you guys, is car culture dead?
- 1:09We just went straight into it.
- 1:12I'm coming out swinging.
- 1:13Yes, car culture's dead.
- 1:15Car culture's been dead for a little while.
- 1:17Let's walk back from that, 'cause that's the edge.
- 1:19That's, "The world is ending, the sky is falling, everything is over.
- 1:23Let's pack it up and sell it all and, and be done with it." I believe this
- 1:26episode title should be Chicken Little.
- 1:29Is it the end or are we at the beginning of something new and something different?
- 1:33It's the end of the world as we know it.
- 1:37And I feel fine.
- 1:39I mean, does that make us dinosaurs?
- 1:40We like cars of a certain age, because we feel the peak car was in the '90s
- 1:45going into the 2000s, that kind of stuff.
- 1:47You know, nothing is better than Volkswagen from the early 2000s.
- 1:50I mean, that's an exaggeration.
- 1:51But the point is, have we passed our prime?
- 1:55Not us, not you, me, and Tanya.
- 1:57I'm talking about cars.
- 1:59Car culture, has it passed its prime?
- 2:01Well- Yes … watching The Commish has taught me anything, yes.
- 2:04Oh, oh, please do fill me in.
- 2:06Because Murder, She Wrote doesn't have nearly as many cool cars.
- 2:10One watches Murder, She Wrote for the guest appearances, and one watches The
- 2:14Commish for all the German appearances.
- 2:16My God.
- 2:17Corrados, 1928s, Audi 5000s,
- 2:21Passats.
- 2:21I mean, somebody was a Volkswagen Audi enthusiast.
- 2:27You remember that show Viper?
- 2:28It was, like, all the Chrysler prototypes on that show that you could think of.
- 2:32Stuff that they never made or they made one of was on that show.
- 2:36I mean, have you ever seen a show that had a Corrado?
- 2:40There's been two so far.
- 2:42The Gran Turismo movie.
- 2:44Gran Turismo had a N- uh, had a Corrado in it.
- 2:45Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:47That's right.
- 2:47It's his father's car.
- 2:48He drove his father's car- Yes … and he- That's right … went and did
- 2:51some nefarious stuff, and then got in trouble- That's right … and yeah.
- 2:53But anyway.
- 2:54Well, we haven't finished the talk about the car culture.
- 2:56Okay, okay.
- 2:57What, what?
- 2:58Tell me.
- 2:58Enlighten me.
- 2:59Well, this is our showcase.
- 3:02I, I think this is the head of the showcase, and you're Chicken Little.
- 3:05Car culture's dead.
- 3:06It is.
- 3:06I mean, they, people have been talking about how kids, like the
- 3:09next generations and then the next generation after that, like fewer and
- 3:12fewer people are getting their license.
- 3:14Fewer and fewer people are driving.
- 3:16Fewer and fewer people are owning cars.
- 3:18There's that, and then there's the advent of all the new cars all look the same.
- 3:24They're all blase.
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:25You've got this EV, the self-driving concept, where I have a car, but
- 3:29it's literally becoming an appliance.
- 3:32And then you have- This new manufacturer, no more manual.
- 3:35This one, no more manual, and it's, and it's like what do we have left?
- 3:39Well, some of them are no more cars.
- 3:41And the subscription-based pricing for features and stuff like that too.
- 3:45That too.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:46It's insane.
- 3:47Like, it's sucking the life out of it.
- 3:49That's the culture that up and coming generations, that's all they know.
- 3:53That's the tech bros and how they make money.
- 3:56That's the reality.
- 3:56Yeah, they have subscriptions for their cell phones.
- 3:59You know, they, they, they don't buy anything.
- 4:01They, they lease their cell phones.
- 4:03They trade up every six months, every year when a new one comes out.
- 4:06Same thing with computers and iPads, and cars aren't any different.
- 4:11Let's talk about the phones for a second, 'cause I had an epiphany.
- 4:14And I was talking to my wife about this.
- 4:15The other day, I remember where I was, I saw a young lady bust out a flip phone.
- 4:21Some people are going back to that.
- 4:23But here's the deal.
- 4:25As much as I wax poetic about my Motorola Razr and how it was, like, the coolest
- 4:30phone, and it was the best 'cause it fit in your pocket, it was super lightweight,
- 4:33and the battery lasted like three years without charging it, the whole nine yards.
- 4:37There was a lot of suck in that phone, right?
- 4:42But this modern flip phone, to say that, "Oh, I don't wanna have a smartphone,"
- 4:46watching this person use it, trying to take a picture, and I guess because
- 4:50we're just so accustomed to the iPhones and the Androids and whatever, I hate
- 4:53to say it, she looked like a doofus.
- 4:55You look really stupid holding up a flip phone trying to take a
- 4:58picture, and watching that flash come out of the hinge and every-
- 5:02I was like, what decade are we in?
- 5:04Like, it was so backwards.
- 5:05And that's when I had the epiphany that when you go around and you're driving
- 5:09an old car amongst all these younger folks, maybe coming into their peak
- 5:14earning potential, buying the Teslas, buying the new Corvettes, buying the
- 5:18Porsche GT3, 'cause that's all they sell, are you the guy with the flip phone?
- 5:23Yes, in their eyes.
- 5:25Yeah.
- 5:25Here's the other piece of it, too, to Brad's point, how people live their
- 5:30lives right now, that's their culture.
- 5:33Yeah.
- 5:34So however they view cars is now their culture.
- 5:38So it's like every decade's progression where back in the day, that Elvis
- 5:44Presley rock and roll music was, you know, the devil's hips, and oh
- 5:48my God, and don't let your children see it and listen to it, right?
- 5:52And, and then the next culture was like, "That's crap," you
- 5:55know, the next generation.
- 5:56"I like," you know, whatever the next hot thing is.
- 5:58Disco or whatever, yeah.
- 5:58And then so on and so on and so forth, right?
- 6:00So are we now those people?
- 6:04Translate that thread to car culture.
- 6:07The generations before us, the people that owned the '60s
- 6:10cars and stuff like that- Yeah
- 6:11their car culture was you go to the drag strip, or you drive up
- 6:15and down the, cruise the boulevard.
- 6:16You know, you go to a car show and you set up a sign, and you sit next to your
- 6:20car, and people come out and talk to you.
- 6:22Our culture was more you drive the car.
- 6:25You did a couple stupid things, maybe a little bit of street racing.
- 6:28You took 'em to the track, did a track day.
- 6:30You know, you'd go to a swap meet.
- 6:32You, you didn't really polish up the car too much because people like to see
- 6:35cars that were driven kind of thing.
- 6:37Mm-hmm.
- 6:37You know, we enjoyed our cars.
- 6:39Now they do it for the views.
- 6:42They do it for the clickbait.
- 6:44They take pictures.
- 6:44For the 'gram.
- 6:45They buy these cars.
- 6:45They don't do anything to 'em.
- 6:47They pay somebody else to do everything to them.
- 6:49They get views and clickbait and everything, and th-
- 6:51then that's their culture.
- 6:53But- I think we are, we are the dinosaurs.
- 6:56Well, that's another good point, because those people that are still
- 6:59around that grew up with those '60s, '70s muscle cars, they are still very
- 7:04much ingrained in their viewpoint.
- 7:06All them new fern cars that were coming out, those little Japanese
- 7:09sports cars and these little Volkswagens were pieces of crap.
- 7:13They did.
- 7:14And it was 'Merica, horsepowers, and, and they probably still view
- 7:16it that way, that tho- that was the greatest generation of cars.
- 7:19Of course, and, and we think peak car was our generation of cars.
- 7:23They probably think peak car was their generation of cars.
- 7:27And those folks still control the collector market and the collector values.
- 7:31That's the other thing, too.
- 7:32You go to any auction, it just blows your mind that a Camaro from the '60s
- 7:37is bringing in a million dollars.
- 7:39You're like, "Why?" They're also the ones that have the wealth.
- 7:43Yeah.
- 7:43Something that we talk about at my company, because this is something
- 7:47we, is a very real thing that we have to deal with right now, is
- 7:50there is a huge shift in transfer of wealth that's about to happen.
- 7:55Yes.
- 7:55As all those people that generated all that wealth, all those baby boomers
- 7:59are dying off and leaving money to the younger generations, what's
- 8:02gonna happen with all that money?
- 8:04And the same thing with these cars.
- 8:06Like, what's gonna happen with these '60s Camaros and GTO Judges
- 8:10and 442 Cutlass Supremes and stuff?
- 8:14Like, what's gonna happen to all these when the, the- Yeah … baby
- 8:16boomers that own them die and transfer them to their kids?
- 8:19Their kids have zero attachment to those things.
- 8:21They're gonna flip 'em.
- 8:22They're gonna sell 'em.
- 8:23They're gonna dump 'em.
- 8:24They're gonna make a quick buck.
- 8:25They're gonna put it into crypto.
- 8:27They're gonna go out, they're gonna buy an R34 GT-R, or they're gonna- Mm-hmm
- 8:32… buy a GT3 RS or a, a right-hand drive FD or a Mark 4 Supra or, or whatever.
- 8:38They're just gonna dri- And the, those prices are, they're already inflated.
- 8:41They're gonna inflate even further.
- 8:43That car culture is gonna die off, and our car culture is already singing its swan
- 8:48song as we get older, 'cause we all die.
- 8:51Well, whatever happened to the car culture of the pre-boomers?
- 8:54I mean, granted, cars aren't that old.
- 8:56You're talking, like, the Packards and the Duesenbergs and all those cars?
- 8:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:59My Tin Lizzie is the best.
- 9:02No.
- 9:02Oh, my God.
- 9:04Top speed, 37 miles an hour.
- 9:06But no, like, what, what ha- We don't even talk about those cars or those people
- 9:10anymore because it's, they're all gone.
- 9:13Yeah.
- 9:13And the same thing's gonna happen to the muscle cars of the '60s.
- 9:16You know, the same thing's gonna happen to the car.
- 9:18Like, the malaise era is the malaise era.
- 9:20We can just skip over- No, the mal- Nobody wants those cars But the cars
- 9:22of the '90s and 2000s, give it 20, 30 years when all- Oh, yeah … of us start
- 9:26dying off, if we're lucky enough to live that long, nobody will talk about the
- 9:30Mark 4 Volkswagen, the 1.8T Fiero cars.
- 9:34It's just not gonna happen.
- 9:36Dude, that pains me too because I still see these groups online that are taking
- 9:4020th anniversary cars and, and R32s, original R32s, and just stripping them
- 9:45down and basically throwing them away.
- 9:47And I'm like, "Well, I guess that means the value of all the ones that
- 9:49are left just goes through the roof," which was the same problem with the
- 9:52914 community where they were junking them and racing them and trashing
- 9:56them, and then they were like, "Oh, nobody wants these cars, they're crap."
- 9:59And then now you can't get into a 914 for less than 100 grand if you want
- 10:03a nice one, you know what I mean?
- 10:04It's craziness.
- 10:05So I, I agree with you there.
- 10:07But to dive into the showcase, Tanya brought an article that I think
- 10:13talks about the first part of this conversation, which is digging in your
- 10:16heels and staying in your lane and staying in your generation of cars.
- 10:20So Tanya, you wanna talk about this particular article
- 10:22from The Wall Street Journal?
- 10:24I, it was something about this guy not wanting to buy new cars because
- 10:29he wanted low-tech cars, but the cars he was looking at, if I recall,
- 10:34they were still in, like, it was in the 2000s or '10s, I don't remember.
- 10:39But it w- it, wherever it was with the year starting with a two,
- 10:41it was still in a window of time where there was tech in the cars.
- 10:45And I was like, "Bro, if you're really trying to go techless, you
- 10:47need to go another decade backwards.
- 10:50You still have a lot of tech even in a mid-2000s, 2010s era car.
- 10:56They still have a lot of tech in them.
- 10:57You still have backup cameras and this, that, and the other.
- 10:59If you wanna eliminate all that, you're going earlier."
- 11:02We've obviously surpassed it, but I feel like there was a sweet spot-
- 11:06Yes … where there was enough tech to make driving still fun, still convenient.
- 11:11Like, you bring up the point about the backup camera.
- 11:13It's very effective, it's very helpful.
- 11:15There was a point where the harmony between cars and
- 11:20technology was pretty much perfect.
- 11:222008, that's the year.
- 11:25Yeah, 'cause that was when, I think that's when backup cameras were mandated
- 11:28as m- as, uh, standard equipment, right?
- 11:30Certain cars had Bluetooth, and a lot of them s- still didn't yet.
- 11:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:36It's in that range, and it's in that time window where the nannies were really
- 11:41primitive, so they stayed out of your way so you could still drive the cars.
- 11:44But once you got to 2010, 2014, you saw the end of that.
- 11:48That was like the, stretched it out to some of those- Yeah … cars were
- 11:51still kind of in that sweet spot.
- 11:53But really, 2008, I kinda dug back into this, is really the
- 11:58year where things changed.
- 12:00That was the sweet spot.
- 12:02That was the, a perfect harmony between automotive excellence and technology,
- 12:09up-and-coming technology on the rise, but it didn't interfere with the driver.
- 12:14Right.
- 12:14And you could still enjoy the car, you could still enjoy
- 12:18the features that the car had.
- 12:19You were still in control of the car.
- 12:22It wasn't signaling back to Big Brother- Yeah … the mischief that you were
- 12:27committing in your car and all that.
- 12:29Gone are those days.
- 12:31I, I understand the want to drive cars with fewer and fewer technology.
- 12:35There wasn't, I, I don't agree with zero technology whatsoever, because I do feel
- 12:40there was that sweet spot where you could have your cake and you could eat it too.
- 12:44A problem I think about often, especially with the, the fact that I just bought a
- 12:4825-year-old car, is parts availability.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:53You brought up a great point about how people are dismantling and
- 12:56destroying and disassembling these, what we thought were collector cars.
- 13:01Like the- Right … the original Mark 4 R32, the 20th anniversaries.
- 13:05Just to stick in the Volkswagen lane, you know, people are dismantling
- 13:08'em like they're Toyota Corollas.
- 13:10Like- Yep … they have zero value whatsoever, which is making it even more
- 13:14difficult in the future to be able to find parts for these cars, which makes
- 13:18it harder to keep them on the road.
- 13:20And the other piece that we haven't even talked about yet is- Government
- 13:24oversight Yeah The government wants you driving the newer cars with the newer
- 13:28technology because they can track you.
- 13:30They've got systems in place to monitor you and see what you're doing, see
- 13:34where you're going, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:36Eventually, I think it's gonna get to a point, especially with the current
- 13:40landscape, they're just gonna make driving all cars before a certain age illegal.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:45If they can't track you because they don't ha- it doesn't have X,
- 13:47Y, Z, or … I mean, I'm probably tin foil hat theory here now or
- 13:51whatever, but not necessarily wrong.
- 13:53No, but then it becomes like that movie we reviewed, The Last Chase, right?
- 13:57Where he buried his car underground, and then when the apocalypse came-
- 14:00Mm-hmm … they couldn't track him because he was in a, you know,
- 14:021917- Well- … Chevron thing.
- 14:04They, they wouldn't … I, I think it's too extreme probably to say that
- 14:09they'd ban them, but- I don't know
- 14:11they'd probably make it, well, if people play by the rules, everything's historic,
- 14:15and you can only drive it on a weekend.
- 14:16And you can only drive it- Yeah … to a show, and you basically can
- 14:18only drive it 2,000 miles a year.
- 14:19And so then it just becomes a paperweight in your driveway.
- 14:22Think about what's going on in California with the tires.
- 14:24We talked about it- Yeah … last episode.
- 14:26But I think they actually passed the law.
- 14:29I, I don't know if it's fully in effect yet or not, or if it's gotta
- 14:32get past the state Senate or whatever, but they're trying to pass that law
- 14:36to mandate that you can only buy a certain kind of tire, which makes,
- 14:40like, 75% of the tire market illegal.
- 14:43All they have to do is make it illegal, and then we can't drive our cars anymore.
- 14:46Yeah, it's craziness.
- 14:48Which may be extreme, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.
- 14:53So, uh, like I said, there's two sides to this conversation.
- 14:57The one side is those of us are digging in our heels, and we want our old cars,
- 15:00and we wanna keep our old cars going.
- 15:02I mean, we sound just like the baby boomers, right?
- 15:04I wanna drive my '57 Chevy even though it's LS-swapped, and it's all good.
- 15:07You know, that kind of thing.
- 15:08But on the other side of the coin, you said, Brad, people trying to
- 15:12hit that nostalgic nerve there, trying to get people excited.
- 15:16And then there's companies like Ford that comes up with this.
- 15:19Just like the Mach-E, I don't wanna call this a Mustang.
- 15:22This is, quote-unquote, the Mach 4 Sedan, and this is how Ford is
- 15:26gonna be getting back into cars, says the headline from MotorTrend.
- 15:29If they just made it two doors, that's not even bad-looking.
- 15:32It looks like an Aston with a Mustang nose on it.
- 15:35You know, if they just made it two doors, it would just be a fucking Mustang.
- 15:38Exactly.
- 15:40Ah!
- 15:42So to Tanya's point, I actually don't think it's a bad-looking car.
- 15:46I think it's a very good-looking car.
- 15:47Where I have issue is that they keep beating a dead horse and
- 15:51putting the Mustang nameplate on cars that it does not belong on.
- 15:56On everything.
- 15:57I'm okay with it even just being called the Ford Mach 4.
- 16:00Call it a Mach 4.
- 16:01Do not call it a Mustang.
- 16:02Call the Mach-E whatever the fuck you want.
- 16:04It's great.
- 16:05Call it a Pinto.
- 16:05I don't care.
- 16:06It's not a Mustang.
- 16:07Don't call it a Mustang.
- 16:09I'll agree.
- 16:10Styling-wise, I like it.
- 16:12I wouldn't call it a Mustang.
- 16:14I don't know what to call it at this point.
- 16:15Let's just stick with the Mach 4.
- 16:17But if you're okay with this, Brad, you being former Camaro
- 16:21guy, are you okay with this?
- 16:23Thank God that's just a rendering.
- 16:25It looks just like a Mustang.
- 16:28And they're saying that the next Camaro might be a four-door.
- 16:32So where Ford goes, Chevy follows, right?
- 16:34Again, don't call it a Camaro.
- 16:36Call it a Caprice.
- 16:37I don't know.
- 16:38Call it a HHR.
- 16:39I don't care.
- 16:41Don't call it a Camaro.
- 16:42There are some names, some badges- That are sacred … that
- 16:46are sacred, that mean something.
- 16:47The Mustang, the Camaro, Corvette.
- 16:50Germany, they all use numbers and letters because, you know, they
- 16:53don't know how to formulate words.
- 16:55So the 911, the M3, whatever.
- 16:58I don't know, I'm going down a rabbit hole.
- 16:59But yeah, don't call it a Camaro.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:01Don't call it a Mustang.
- 17:03Now, if we keep it in this two-door shape, this looks better than the current Camaro.
- 17:08I will say that.
- 17:09Well, there is no current Camaro.
- 17:10They don't make it anymore, right?
- 17:12The last generation Camaro.
- 17:13Yeah.
- 17:13The most current ZL1 that was produced, you know, however
- 17:17many years ago or whatever.
- 17:18So I like it.
- 17:19I think it looks good.
- 17:20It begs the question if there is room at the table in 2026 and beyond for
- 17:26muscle cars, and we're gonna touch on this again as we go on, because muscle
- 17:31car culture is a whole nother thing, pulling on those nostalgic heartstrings
- 17:35there with those types of cars.
- 17:37So I wanna come back to that.
- 17:38We're gonna put a pin in that for just a second.
- 17:40Tanya mentioned it before.
- 17:42Integra.
- 17:43Ah, the Integra.
- 17:46Honda is halting the manual Civic Si and the Integra A-Spec.
- 17:52So just to add more fuel to that fire, even the Japanese are
- 17:56deleting the manual transmissions.
- 17:58We know Toyota's been working on that fake manual transmission for a while.
- 18:02There's rumors about Subaru coming back with manuals.
- 18:04They already got rid of those.
- 18:06If it's no good for the Germans, 'cause they've declared no more manuals as of the
- 18:10end of this year, so Honda's getting in the… So who's gonna have a manual left?
- 18:14Anybody?
- 18:14Nobody.
- 18:15Subaru.
- 18:16They don't count.
- 18:16They have a class action lawsuit and all sorts of dumb stuff going on.
- 18:20You sure they even gonna be in business?
- 18:21So, I d- I wanna see is there an actual link for this article?
- 18:25'Cause I wanna see the reasoning behind why they're halting it.
- 18:29Just ask Gemini
- 18:32So it says that they are pausing the production of the manual transmission
- 18:35versions of the Civic SI and Acura Integra after the 2026 model year,
- 18:40driven by upcoming shifting EPA emissions regulations and certification
- 18:44rules for 2027 and later models.
- 18:46Honda intends to bring the manual powertrains back once regulations
- 18:50clear up, potentially around 2028.
- 18:53Lies, lies.
- 18:53So it's, I, I mean, it says temporary.
- 18:55So basically the laws have changed.
- 18:58They need to reconstruct the manual transmission to fit with the new laws.
- 19:05I think the Japanese have the same problem that the Germans have, but not as bad.
- 19:09They don't know how to gear their manual transmissions.
- 19:12The Americans, it's like double, triple overdrive.
- 19:15You're doing 1,500 RPM in a four banger at 80 miles an hour.
- 19:19The Germans, it's like 4,000 RPM, 80 miles an hour.
- 19:23Must be at maximum one-to-one ratio of speed always.
- 19:26Ah.
- 19:28And the cars are, like, burning themselves out, and it's like gear
- 19:31them down so they get better mileage.
- 19:34A long time ago manuals were more efficient than automatics are.
- 19:38I think the automatics today are, are a lot better than these old
- 19:40slush boxes that we're used to.
- 19:42So is there an advantage?
- 19:44Mm, probably not, but I, I like having three pedals.
- 19:48True.
- 19:49But I also think given the initial part of the showcase, talking about
- 19:55car culture and is car culture dead, I believe the manual transmission
- 19:58is a part of our car culture.
- 20:00Exactly.
- 20:01And our car culture is dying, so it makes sense that it would go that way.
- 20:06Uh, you already just pointed out that- But wouldn't the kids that
- 20:08are buying the flip phones wanna drive a manual transmission car?
- 20:11They're doing it ironically, but the problem is- Ah … who's gonna
- 20:14teach them that skill to do it?
- 20:16There you go.
- 20:16All right.
- 20:17And where are they gonna buy if there's no manual transmission?
- 20:19ChatGPT will teach you how to drive a manual transmission, right?
- 20:22Yeah, I'm sure.
- 20:23Cha- I'm, you'll put ChatGPT right seat.
- 20:25I'm gonna put my computer there, and it's like, "Okay, how do I do this?"
- 20:27"Okay, Brad, here's what you do."
- 20:30Stalled out 12 times.
- 20:31You're doing great.
- 20:32Yeah.
- 20:32You, you- But this is what you really need to do … you push it to the
- 20:34dealership and swap it for an automatic.
- 20:36That's what you- Yeah, that makes- That's how you do it.
- 20:38So I think it's just another part of our car culture that's dying.
- 20:41Well, you gotta look at where populations are too because sitting
- 20:45in constant traffic crawling, what do you need a manual for?
- 20:49It's a purist thing that we're, we're trying to hold onto because it's fun.
- 20:54Personally, given the way technology has changed so much, there are
- 20:56no practical reasons really right now to have a manual transmission.
- 21:01They're definitely no fun at the track.
- 21:03I have not been in an automatic that has been fun, like, ever.
- 21:06Right.
- 21:07For your daily driving, there is no advantage to a manual.
- 21:12That's very true.
- 21:13You know, this next one, I want to talk about it with respect to car
- 21:17culture because normally we would've reserved this for rich people things.
- 21:22And this is- The Luce.
- 21:24We talked about this, we ranted about this, we made fun of this.
- 21:28Everybody doesn't like this from what I understand.
- 21:32According to the headlines, Ferrari has hit its sales target with these things.
- 21:37I think I know how.
- 21:38But I, I just want you guys to… Gut reaction, like, they're actually
- 21:42selling these pieces of crap?
- 21:44'Cause there's a shoe for every foot.
- 21:46Is that what it is?
- 21:47I was gonna say, they must be using the same data that Tesla uses when they,
- 21:52you know, announce their sales figures.
- 21:53Or they only made one.
- 21:56So remember, we have to hit our sales targets, right?
- 21:58They made one, they sold one.
- 22:00Job done.
- 22:01They sold one to this guy.
- 22:04They sold one to Dr. Herbert "Herbie" Wertheim for $40 million.
- 22:10That's Luce number zero.
- 22:11So all the ones we've seen pictures of, this guy bought it for 40 million bucks.
- 22:16You know what's funny?
- 22:17I thought that was Bernie Ecclestone.
- 22:19Willie Nelson.
- 22:21Yes.
- 22:22But sober.
- 22:24What I've come to find out is that this is the second time this gentleman has
- 22:28made, quote, "a donation" to Ferrari.
- 22:31He bought an SP3 last year for $26 million.
- 22:35Who is this?
- 22:35I would like to have this shoe store- This is Herbie.
- 22:35This is Herbie.
- 22:35He's, like, 100,000 years old.
- 22:37I would like to have this
- 22:43kind of no fucks money.
- 22:46He is a famed optometrist, philanthropist, billionaire inventor.
- 22:50Okay.
- 22:50Anyway, so he buys a SP3 for $26 million last year.
- 22:55The money goes to the Ferrari Foundation.
- 22:57He buys Luce number zero for $40 million.
- 23:00The money goes to the Ferrari Foundation.
- 23:02I don't think he took delivery of these cars.
- 23:04From what I come to understand, he's not actually a Ferrari collector.
- 23:07So what I'm thinking is, tell me how to launder money without
- 23:11telling me how to launder money.
- 23:16You know what I thought of?
- 23:17'Cause people were talking about this and how crazy it is.
- 23:20Ferrari Formula 1 cannot take a donation.
- 23:23They have to have a sponsor, and it is that.
- 23:25W- this guy isn't gonna sponsor Ferrari Formula 1, but if he makes a donation to
- 23:30the foundation and the money finds its way to the Formula 1 t- 'Cause what is
- 23:35Ferrari gonna use the $40 million for?
- 23:37Are they in that much debt?
- 23:39Well, I would think with a name like Ferrari Foundation, it should
- 23:42be a nonprofit, so they should be using it for nonprofit things.
- 23:48Lies.
- 23:49Lies.
- 23:49It's all lies.
- 23:52Lies.
- 23:55Let's just say that X amount, we don't know how many of these Luches that they're
- 23:59supposed to make, at $850,000 a piece.
- 24:03If they've allegedly met their sales targets, and you know Ferrari has that
- 24:07weird Ponzi scheme where you gotta buy in at certain levels to get accepted
- 24:11to the bigger levels, and then when you get to the big levels, then you can
- 24:13get to the, the really extreme stuff.
- 24:15They're like Fabletics.
- 24:17Yeah, right?
- 24:17So l- so you're telling me, let's say there's 100 of these things
- 24:21other than the one that they sold, I think is the only one that they made.
- 24:25There's 100 people out there that have put down 850 grand on that?
- 24:30So WhistlinDiesel probably will.
- 24:32Has he got that kind of money?
- 24:35Definitely.
- 24:36You know, The Stig mentioned him recently, talking about how he should've been one
- 24:40of the people that go on the new Top Gear.
- 24:42I was like, "No way." I would watch that.
- 24:46What?
- 24:46But he's too, he's too crass.
- 24:47Yeah, exactly.
- 24:48He's just not polite.
- 24:48He's not professional enough.
- 24:50So sticking with Ferrari, I got $850,000 burning a hole in my pocket,
- 24:54I'm gonna go buy that toaster instead of buying this, if they make it.
- 24:59This is, they unveiled this during Monterey Car Week.
- 25:01This is the Ferrari CZ26, and it looks like an SF90 and a Luce had a baby.
- 25:09So is this what Ferrari was actually intending on making the whole time,
- 25:13but it wasn't ready yet, so they had to come up with that other thing?
- 25:17Look at that.
- 25:17That's, that looks good.
- 25:18This looks like a Ferrari.
- 25:20You can't tell me that this is electric.
- 25:22I mean, it looks like a modern Ferrari.
- 25:25But it looks like a Ferrari.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:27Unlike the Luce, which I don't even wanna burn my retinas with looking at again.
- 25:32What does Luce translate to?
- 25:34Light.
- 25:35Light, okay.
- 25:36Ugh.
- 25:36Wanted to make sure it didn't translate to, like, stupid
- 25:38American or something like that.
- 25:40Only in dialect.
- 25:41Yes.
- 25:49All right.
- 25:49At the same time, we're talking about $40 million, you know, Luce
- 25:53Zeroes and $850,000 for this, and
- 25:57there's the CZ 26 and blah, blah, and then we got the Temerario Lamborghini
- 26:03coming out, which looks like an insect.
- 26:04There's also reports from The Drive talking about how the luxury market
- 26:08is crumbling from the top down.
- 26:10Now, I want to, again, car culture, words are really important.
- 26:15What does luxury mean to you?
- 26:18Generally, that would be something, and I don't even know if that's
- 26:22true anymore, I guess it still is, like a Lexus or Mercedes- Lexus,
- 26:25Mercedes, BMW … be luxury.
- 26:27Bentley, Rolls-Royce.
- 26:29Used to be Aston Martin as well, luxury.
- 26:32Aston Martin would be in there, yeah.
- 26:34No, I don't think a Lamborghini is a luxury car.
- 26:37No.
- 26:38I think it's a supercar.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39Supercar brand, yeah.
- 26:41Every car on this except for this Rolls and the Bentley that they
- 26:45showed are all hypercars of s- or sports cars of some point.
- 26:49911, Mercedes SLS, even these Maseratis, these are not luxury cars.
- 26:55I would consider Maserati a luxury brand.
- 26:58Yeah, but the cars that they're showing are their sports cars, right?
- 27:01It's not like the big Quattroporte, you know, limousine of a car
- 27:04that you're gonna drive around.
- 27:05But the Valhalla, like, come on.
- 27:07That's… The s- no.
- 27:10Is the hypercar market collapsing?
- 27:12Sure, because who's gonna go out and spend a million bucks
- 27:16on a car that they can't drive?
- 27:18By the way, this Rolls-Royce down here, this was used on Your Friends
- 27:23and Neighbors with Jon Hamm.
- 27:25His buddy Barney drives one of these.
- 27:27It's actually really cool-looking.
- 27:28It's got suicide doors.
- 27:29They open the opposite way, which is pretty neat.
- 27:31Yeah, that's a nice-looking car.
- 27:33See, but that's a luxury car.
- 27:35I feel like this should go under rich people things.
- 27:37100%. But I just wanted to bring it up because we were talking
- 27:40about rich people things.
- 27:49But I wanna move on from that because we always have to segue into Volkswagen
- 27:54because they have lost their mind.
- 27:57But this actually dovetails right out of our showcase, and I don't know if
- 28:01you guys watched this video, but what is the fascination with OEM Plus?
- 28:08What is OEM Plus?
- 28:10Is this a new car culture thing?
- 28:11Like, I feel when the kids say words, you know, slang that I've never heard before,
- 28:16like OEM Plus, what does that mean?
- 28:19My guess is it's OEM with a mod or two.
- 28:23Well, is it like HBO Max, Paramount Plus?
- 28:26Like, is that the plus part?
- 28:28G- I could look at this different ways, and Tanya and I talked about this.
- 28:30The more of these that pop up with this OEM Plus stuff, a- and it's very much
- 28:35in the Volkswagen community right now, 'cause the Volkswagen community is not
- 28:38the same as it was when we were young.
- 28:39But then again, if we look back, maybe we were silly like them, too.
- 28:43I don't know.
- 28:44Basically, it's like, "Hey, I got a Beetle like yours, Brad, and I'm gonna put a Mark
- 28:486 steering wheel in it." Boom, OEM Plus.
- 28:51So is OEM Plus just m- changing one or two things, or is it upgrading from one
- 28:57OEM part to a OEM part from another car?
- 29:01'Cause that's what you just described.
- 29:02All of the above.
- 29:03The goal to make a vehicle look, feel, and perform better using
- 29:06subtle upgrades that look like they came straight from the factory.
- 29:10Okay, so that's kinda how I like to do cars in the first place.
- 29:15You're an OEM Plus guy?
- 29:16I mean, I wouldn't call it something as stupid as OEM Plus.
- 29:21But yeah, I, I like subtle, tasteful mods.
- 29:25Now, I also want something bonkers and completely crazy and out of this
- 29:29world, but I'm on an OEM Plus budget.
- 29:33And I think when we were younger, we called it bolt-ons, right?
- 29:38Yes.
- 29:38And some of it was, okay, I bought a base GTI, and then they came out with the
- 29:4320th and they didn't tell anybody that they were coming out, and it's like, "Oh,
- 29:45man, I really want that black headliner or I want those seats," or whatever.
- 29:49And you would find it, like you said, at a swap meet from somebody that
- 29:52wrecked their car or took it apart or decided to put race seats in there.
- 29:56You know, we were OEM Plussing 30 years ago.
- 29:59So you just weren't cool enough to know- Oh … the term, because
- 30:04according to Autoblog, the term OEM Plus originated organically within
- 30:09the late '90s and early 2000s car enthusiast communities, particularly the
- 30:15Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW tuning scenes.
- 30:18Did you hear me throw up in the back of my throat a little bit?
- 30:21So- I, I, I think we can gloss over all the rest of that and
- 30:24just focus on BMW tuning scene.
- 30:27There, there you go.
- 30:28There's that too.
- 30:29Yeah.
- 30:29They're trying to lump Volkswagen into that, but no, I, I mean, Eric
- 30:33and I, and you, Tanya, we've been members of the Volkswagen scene
- 30:37for the better part of 30 years.
- 30:40No.
- 30:41Just nobody apparently was widely calling this, because roots and
- 30:44evolution of the style, it, does this not describe the VW, Audi subculture.
- 30:49Early Euro tuning scenes popularized taking base model Golfs or Jettas
- 30:53and upgrading them using rare parts from European spec variants or
- 30:57high performance factory models, like adding Audi or GLI parts.
- 31:01But did anybody call it OEM Plus?
- 31:03No.
- 31:04Allegedly, the term was there, but no one knew about it because nobody had
- 31:08the internet, so it was two people saying it in a back corner somewhere.
- 31:11Behind the Dairy Queen.
- 31:12So a flag on the play, because this is the problem with the internet
- 31:16rewriting history at any given moment.
- 31:19Could be that, too.
- 31:20You could write a blog tomorrow and say blah, blah, blah, and people go,
- 31:23"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That must be true. It- that's how it was done." This
- 31:27strikes me as a journalist or somebody tried to coin a term, it didn't go
- 31:32well, and now he's got a voice because of the social media and the internet.
- 31:37"I'm gonna create this term, and I'm gonna make it cool." Or you just see everything
- 31:41that's trending on Instagram, and you spin a tale and put some history behind it, and
- 31:46then suddenly people take it as gospel.
- 31:48We're, we're rewriting everything all the time.
- 31:50Thanks, Chad.
- 31:50I'm gonna pose a question to the listeners.
- 31:53Have you ever used the term or heard somebody that you know use the term
- 31:57OEM Plus before this episode airs?
- 32:01I think you're gonna get a big old negatory there, my man.
- 32:04Yeah, true.
- 32:05I will say, it's not new to this, the year 2026, though.
- 32:09At least dates back to last year, because there is a, and this is
- 32:12a reputable source, a Euro Tuning news article dated in, a year ago,
- 32:17actually, What Are OEM Plus Mods?
- 32:19See, I think it was a year ago.
- 32:21But, you know, if your source is Urban Dictionary, and that's a
- 32:24whole nother thing, too, right?
- 32:25J- just to pull on this thread a little bit further, Volkswagen community's not
- 32:28the first people that were doing that.
- 32:30I mean, people back in the '60s, I hate to keep going back
- 32:32to that generation, but- Right
- 32:33people back in the '60s were buying, you know, the cheapest model Charger
- 32:38or whatever that they could get, GTO or whatever, and they were taking
- 32:42the bits from the Judge or, you know, from the, the Scat Pack or whatever.
- 32:46Right.
- 32:46The 454s and stuff, and putting them on their cars.
- 32:49What were they calling it back then?
- 32:50Another question for the, the listening community.
- 32:53I don't remember, but I'm, I'm, I guarantee they didn't call it OEM Plus,
- 32:56but I'm sure they had a term for it.
- 32:58They're called mods.
- 32:59I always called it bolt-ons.
- 33:00Or mods.
- 33:02You're just making mods, right?
- 33:03Modding.
- 33:03You know, I'm, I'm modding my car with bolt-ons.
- 33:05To your point about the old guys, they were hot rodders, right?
- 33:07They were hot-rodding the cars.
- 33:08Yeah, they, they, they were souping up.
- 33:10They were souping it up, yeah.
- 33:11Yeah.
- 33:12Damn, look at this.
- 33:13We're peeling the onion back here.
- 33:15Yes.
- 33:15I have found an Urban Dictionary entry from 2016.
- 33:20She looked up shrimping.
- 33:25Tanya, that's inappropriate for this episode.
- 33:28They were talking OEM Plus back in 2016 at least, so we're going back in time here.
- 33:32We're slowly peeling the layers to see where this originated from.
- 33:36Who was?
- 33:37Somebody on Urban Dictionary.
- 33:39The same guy that wrote the Wiki entry for it, right?
- 33:41Yeah.
- 33:41When, when does it say that, that entry was created?
- 33:44In August 2026.
- 33:46Yeah, buddy.
- 33:47February 28th, 2016.
- 33:49Uh-huh.
- 33:50OEM Plus.
- 33:51Wow, look at that.
- 33:52Well- Yeah.
- 33:53It, it sounds so elegant.
- 33:55I, yeah, right.
- 33:56It's, yeah, it sounds very, very posh.
- 33:58I'm gonna get a OEM Plus badge for the Beetle.
- 34:02Can I get an OEM negative?
- 34:03Like throwing stuff away that was factory p- I'm gonna put that on the race cars.
- 34:07I'm OEM negative.
- 34:09I threw all the garbage away.
- 34:11You're always so negative.
- 34:13You, you simplified and added lightness.
- 34:15That's the Lotus way.
- 34:16Okay.
- 34:16Wait, OEM, that's kind of funny.
- 34:19OEM negative?
- 34:20Yeah.
- 34:21Dude, we should start posting on Instagram about how we're OEM negative.
- 34:25What, what's your car type?
- 34:26Oh, I'm OEM negative.
- 34:27Oh, I'm OEM positive.
- 34:30But then you could be like, "Look at what I threw away. Look at this garbage
- 34:34the factory made that was completely pointless," like the emission system
- 34:38on a Mark IV, that you don't need that to go racing, that's for sure.
- 34:41Your OEM carbon footprint.
- 34:43OEM negative.
- 34:45What's up?
- 34:49But anyway, let's stay on this Volkswagen thread for a second because,
- 34:52again, with the guys of Car Culture, I think this is what's wrong with
- 34:57modern cars and modern car culture.
- 34:59If you watch this video, this gentleman goes through the process of basically
- 35:05reformatting his transmission.
- 35:07I don't know what else to call it.
- 35:08It was like a complete wipe and restart, and he goes through this whole
- 35:12procedure and he's like, "Feel a slight lag or jerking from your trans-" And
- 35:16I'm like, "DSG and all these modern transmissions shouldn't have these kinds
- 35:20of problems." Well, it's a Volkswagen.
- 35:22Well, yes.
- 35:23And then we got the Kool-Aid rant from certain loyalists in our organization
- 35:27that are just like, "But this is the way, and this is this," and trying to justify.
- 35:31And I'm just like, "No." I'm honestly still confused.
- 35:34I don't know enough about automatic transmission vehicles,
- 35:37but this boggles my mind.
- 35:39The argument being that the car is learning how you drive, so if
- 35:43you drive aggressively and it's shifting faster, then it will
- 35:46just shift faster at all times.
- 35:47I'm sorry, that's stupid programming, because the car should know how I'm
- 35:52driving at all times and modify how the car shifts based on that, because there's
- 35:56real time data and it should be able to trend and forecast what you're doing.
- 36:00So just because two minutes ago I did a burnout off the line to smoke
- 36:04somebody, and it banged through the gears, doesn't mean two miles later
- 36:08when I'm just cruising that it should still be banging through the gears.
- 36:12If it sees your acceleration at a certain curve.
- 36:15No, I agree 1,000%, and even older ECUs and transmission modules
- 36:20could figure this stuff out.
- 36:21And with the advanced computers that are in cars now, I mean, maybe they need AI.
- 36:25If it's true that that's how Volkswagen transmissions are
- 36:27programmed, wow, that's dumb.
- 36:30Cars are junk.
- 36:30Or they're Terminators.
- 36:32Remember the Terminator, "I'm a learning computer." Well, they, then again,
- 36:37you're not very good at it, then.
- 36:39No.
- 36:39Because learning, you should be adapting continuously to how I'm driving and
- 36:43matching what I'm doing, like you would do if you had a manual transmission.
- 36:47Because you wouldn't just, some tool bags would, but if you're just
- 36:50cruising around you wouldn't be like, bang, second, bang, third.
- 36:53I'm doing 25 miles an hour.
- 36:55Like, really?
- 36:56I knew a guy who had a Mark3 VR6 Jetta who would never take it out of fourth gear
- 37:02because he liked the way it pulled all the time, so he would never put it in fifth.
- 37:06I was like, "You're out of your freaking mind. What are you doing?"
- 37:09He was OEM negative as well.
- 37:13I feel like there's a problem and this person needs to…
- 37:16There's like should be a recall on these transmissions if that's out there.
- 37:19Right?
- 37:19That'll be the next news article is a big massive recall on shitty
- 37:23transmissions from Volkswagen.
- 37:25Well, that's okay, because it's not gonna matter, because again from Motor1
- 37:29confirming that Volkswagen is about to kill h- roughly half of its lineup.
- 37:32It's already killed, like, half its staff, so.
- 37:34Yeah, that's true.
- 37:35And you know, we talked about this the last time, so I don't wanna beat this one
- 37:39down again, but I did post on our Discord.
- 37:42I was like, "Hey, I would love to find the truth to this," because they
- 37:46mention a press release in a worrying press release issued just minutes
- 37:49ago, you know, written like Dan Rather in the '80s or something here, like
- 37:52Walter Cronkite, the end of the world.
- 37:54And there is exactly here, the executive board present the future
- 37:57plan for Volkswagen, and inside of this they outline how they're gonna
- 38:01streamline by 50% and reduce this and that and do here, do there.
- 38:05And it's all very technical and German and whatever, but it's all there in black and
- 38:10white from Volkswagen as to what they plan to do for at least the short-term future.
- 38:15So maybe it's not a complete flag on the play?
- 38:19Well, because they'll cut half the workforce because they have AI now.
- 38:22Is that what they're using to program those transmissions?
- 38:24'Cause, uh- ChatGPT, set my transmission to harsh shifting, please.
- 38:30Oh, my God.
- 38:32And in 20 seconds reset it back to regular.
- 38:34But that's okay, because Audi says that their operating profits
- 38:37are holding steady despite a challenging first half of the year.
- 38:41Lies.
- 38:42Lies.
- 38:45I don't know how their operating profits are holding anything with Formula 1.
- 38:48They suck so bad.
- 38:50Not as bad as Aston and Cadillac and- They aren't the worst But they're pretty bad.
- 38:57They're solidly in the middle.
- 38:58We're going to talk about that during our stupid show name.
- 39:03Everything is great over at Volkswagen, okay?
- 39:05Everything is wonderful.
- 39:07Everything is awesome.
- 39:08Everything is awesome.
- 39:10Exactly, but you're still part of the team, you know?
- 39:12Yeah.
- 39:12It's all good when you still work there.
- 39:14I bring this up, and this should be rich people things, but I have to bring it
- 39:16up in this section because people might not know that things are so awesome at
- 39:21Volkswagen, I'm gonna mention it again, that they divested Bugatti and Rimac, and
- 39:26they've scuttled a bunch of other stuff.
- 39:28And in the midst of all that, you know, they made this thing.
- 39:33So what do we think of the Bugatti Bolide on steroids?
- 39:37This is the… I can't even pronounce this French word, so
- 39:40I'm gonna stick with Bolide.
- 39:40It's not a French word.
- 39:42How do you pronounce that, then?
- 39:43Well, it means fireball.
- 39:44Does it?
- 39:45Destrier?
- 39:46Destrier?
- 39:46I don't know how to pronounce.
- 39:47Destrier?
- 39:47Oh, sorry, I thought you meant Bolide.
- 39:50No, this.
- 39:51Oh, I didn't look at that.
- 39:53I didn't read that far.
- 39:55It's, like- … literally the second half of the first sentence.
- 39:58That also is steed.
- 39:59It is.
- 39:59It's got quad exhaust pipes coming out the back like the Batmobile.
- 40:03But here's the problem.
- 40:04I don't like the front.
- 40:06In profile it looks good.
- 40:08In the back it looks like something from LEGO.
- 40:10In the front it looks like a carp.
- 40:12This is a Pokemon.
- 40:14I- Look at the steering wheel.
- 40:16What is that?
- 40:17Liberace's hot tub, that's what this is.
- 40:19S- so in this smaller view of it, that looks like a cross-sectional
- 40:24area that you dissected a human, and you're seeing, like, the muscular- Yeah
- 40:29fibers and everything.
- 40:30That is the heinous interior.
- 40:32I mean, I'm sure these are all renderings.
- 40:34I mean, this is a little Knight Rider-ish going on here.
- 40:37I mean, I saw the Bolide when I was at Le Mans in '23, and they ran it on track
- 40:42to kind of show it off and everything.
- 40:43And obviously it's a little more subdued than this.
- 40:45It looked more like a Veyron Chiron than it did like this.
- 40:48But there's aspects of this that I really like, and then there's things
- 40:52about it I just absolutely hate.
- 40:53I mean, who's buying this?
- 40:55The luxury car market's collapsing.
- 40:56Well, that was my next point.
- 40:58So if that's true, what they're saying, and this is considered a luxury car, why
- 41:02are they even bothering to build this?
- 41:04And now Bugatti's on its own.
- 41:06So how long are they gonna last building stuff like this that nobody can afford?
- 41:11Maybe they're using Home Depot parts.
- 41:12Hey, now.
- 41:13Hey, now.
- 41:13Hey, now.
- 41:13That's reserved for a different car manufacturer.
- 41:16So earlier I mentioned the Camaro and the Mustang potentially being
- 41:21four doors, and then I also said to you, Brad, "Is there room in 2026 for
- 41:25muscle cars in today's car culture?"
- 41:28We're gonna put air quotes around car culture.
- 41:30And Stellantis has answered the call yet again.
- 41:35The call nobody made.
- 41:37What the fuck is that?
- 41:43This is the worst badge engineering I've ever seen.
- 41:46So it's the Charger Super Bee Sixpack.
- 41:50And if you know anything about the Sixpack from back in the day- Yeah,
- 41:54it was a six barrel carb, right?
- 41:56Correct.
- 41:56What is it?
- 41:57Triple Hollies or whatever the… Yeah, yeah, you know, I'm not a hot rod guy,
- 42:00so I'm gonna get pounced on for this.
- 42:02But the point is, the Sixpack was all about carburetion of the engine.
- 42:06So this is called the Sixpack because it's a twin-turbo six-cylinder making
- 42:11600 horse- It's all the sixes, you see.
- 42:13This, today's episode is brought to you by the number six and the color chartreuse.
- 42:16I thought it was because it ca- it came with a six-pack of
- 42:18non-alcoholic beer, 'cause that's the clientele that they're in.
- 42:21No, that's the car culture today.
- 42:23Yes, I would agree.
- 42:25I mean, can you call a twin-turbo six-cylinder hurricane-powered
- 42:29Charger a muscle car anymore?
- 42:31Like, what defines a muscle car?
- 42:33It's gotta be a V8 rear wheel drive, right?
- 42:35That's a good question.
- 42:36Everybody's got their own definition.
- 42:38Hold on, because I'm gonna draw you a parallel.
- 42:40In the olden times, you know, when we roamed the earth as dinosaurs, there
- 42:44were the Camaros and the Mustangs and all the other pony cars and all that
- 42:48stuff of our, you know, the Fox Bodies and, you know, all that kinda stuff.
- 42:51Yeah, Camaro and Mustangs.
- 42:53But then you had the AMG Mercedes, which everybody went, "Man, those
- 42:57are some German muscle cars."
- 42:58And then you had the Baker's hot rods, like, you know, the big Lincolns and stuff
- 43:02like that with the big V8s, you know, and the Marauders and all these other
- 43:05cars that existed that were out there.
- 43:07But you always knew what a muscle car was.
- 43:09V8, rear wheel drive.
- 43:11It was huge displacement Well, well, yeah, and huge displacement.
- 43:15Exactly.
- 43:15Like 9.2 liters that makes, you know, 250 horsepower or whatever.
- 43:19But you're right, it was huge displacement V8s.
- 43:21Like, that was- Yeah, like the Australian Holdens and the
- 43:24Monaros and all that stuff, right?
- 43:26What I'm getting at is BMW never had a muscle car until they put a V8 in the M3.
- 43:33Didn't come, but just, what, maybe 15, 20 years ago.
- 43:36So what I'm getting at is this new Charger with a six-cylinder turbo is stepping
- 43:41down and is akin to a six-cylinder BMW turbo, which is a real thing now, right?
- 43:47Because there really isn't a V8 M3 anymore.
- 43:49So is the M3 now a muscle car with a six-cylinder?
- 43:53It, it was always a six-cylinder, and there's plenty of other six-cylinder cars.
- 43:57Would you consider Mark 4 Supra?
- 43:58Would you consider that a muscle car?
- 44:00I don't think you can consider anything other than American cars muscle cars.
- 44:05I think a hallmark trait that has lingered is that these cars
- 44:08can only go in a straight line.
- 44:11And a German V8 car can corner.
- 44:13Except for an AMG Mercedes, they can't corner worth a crap either.
- 44:16They're more of a sports car.
- 44:18According to Gemini, a muscle car is an American-made two-door midsize
- 44:23coupe equipped with a massive high-displacement engine, usually a V8,
- 44:27in parenthesis, built for explosive, to Tanya's point, straight line
- 44:31acceleration at an affordable price.
- 44:35Ah, there's the extra part.
- 44:37It's not that luxury car like we were talking about earlier.
- 44:40No, it's got a, the engine power is usually a powerful V8.
- 44:43Drivetrain, typically rear wheel drive.
- 44:45Body style, generally two-door hardtops or coupes with aggressive, bold styling.
- 44:50Strictly for raw power and speed in a straight line.
- 44:53Also, did anybody notice these pictures, probably AI generated, some of them are
- 44:58two-door and some of them are four-door?
- 44:59Well, 'cause one's a Charger and the other's a Charger Plus.
- 45:03OEM Plus is what it is.
- 45:05OEM Plus.
- 45:06Yeah, my plus is two more doors.
- 45:09So I will say this, of all the interiors we've looked at probably in the last
- 45:13six months on cars that we bring up on this show, this has the nicest interior.
- 45:17I like the way this looks.
- 45:18This is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I actually really like the interior
- 45:22of the desterior- the desterior interior.
- 45:23The, of the Bugatti?
- 45:26Yeah.
- 45:26The one that said looked like it was, like, an autopsy in there?
- 45:29Yeah.
- 45:30It was pretty terrible.
- 45:30Yeah.
- 45:31Hey, maybe that plays into, like, my love for horror movies, but- There
- 45:34you go There's obviously a bridge between muscle car, supercar, hypercar.
- 45:41Because, you know, when, during our days, supercars were the top of the line, right?
- 45:45The F40, the 959, the XJ220, the Countach, the Diablo.
- 45:50Those were supercars.
- 45:51There wasn't such thing as a hypercar like that Bugatti that we talked about earlier.
- 45:54And then below supercars were sports cars, so on down the line.
- 45:58I don't know where this one sits, but still in the Stellantis camp.
- 46:02Could love the headline here.
- 46:03Maserati realized nobody wants quiet supercars, and now it wants its V8 back.
- 46:08And Maserati's also considering putting a manual back in their car.
- 46:12But do you know what Maserati hasn't figured out yet?
- 46:14How to sell cars?
- 46:15Nobody wants a Maserati.
- 46:17Yes.
- 46:18The value on these will plummet immediately, just
- 46:21like all the rest of them.
- 46:22Yes.
- 46:23It is not bad looking, though.
- 46:25Yeah, for whatever reason, Maseratis are always seen as just, like, the
- 46:28red-headed stepchild of the Ferrari world.
- 46:31They are a bargain basement Ferrari, because oftentimes they
- 46:33have Ferrari engines in them.
- 46:35Now, granted, you've got all the rest of the Alfa Romeo
- 46:38Fiat stuff going on with it.
- 46:39But I met some people this summer who have his and hers Maseratis, and
- 46:43they're like, "They're really not that bad. They're easy to work on. The parts
- 46:47are inexpensive." And I'm like- What?
- 46:48… "These are some bargain basement cars." Are they inexpensive because these
- 46:52people are in an economic bracket where- … it is inexpensive to
- 46:56them, or are they really inexpensive?
- 46:58I wasn't going to pry, but that thought did cross my mind.
- 47:03We talked about this when we talked about F1, and how there's such a disparity
- 47:06between the teams and everything.
- 47:08Yes.
- 47:08And I brought up, I think, uh, the, the unpopular opinion that
- 47:11some teams just deserve to die off.
- 47:13And I think I used Williams as an example.
- 47:16As a team that, yes, it's got great racing heritage, great history.
- 47:21They were champions at one point, but for many, many recent years they proved
- 47:26to be back of the pack, you know, before we added more back markers.
- 47:30I was of the opinion that they should just go away.
- 47:33Yeah.
- 47:33You can't compete.
- 47:34You don't belong to be there, heritage or not.
- 47:37I feel the same way about Maserati as just a car company in general.
- 47:41Yes, it's got a great heritage.
- 47:42It's got a lot of enthusiasts for cars that they used to make.
- 47:46If they can't sell cars, then now's the time to find a different business,
- 47:51because if you can't sell cars, you don't deserve to be a car company.
- 47:54And yes, I feel that way about Volkswagen too, as much as it pains me to say.
- 47:58If Volkswagen can't make cars that people wanna buy and they start
- 48:02to die, then they need to die.
- 48:03So there's a definite distinction between the circus that is Stellantis
- 48:08trying to keep all of those plates spinning on little poles that
- 48:11they have, because they have these little fiefdoms everywhere, right?
- 48:14It's Fiat doing its own thing, and Ferrari's doing its own thing, and
- 48:17Maserati's doing its own thing, and nobody talks to anybody because it's all Italian
- 48:20histrionics, and there's hands flying everywhere, and all that kind of stuff.
- 48:23So we'll just leave that where it is.
- 48:25And then they added the French cars to the mix too to make
- 48:27things even more interesting.
- 48:28The Germans just think they know everything, and that they
- 48:31know what the market wants.
- 48:33That's been Volkswagen's problem for 50 years.
- 48:36They never bring the cars people want because they don't think those people
- 48:40are gonna buy them, so they give us a bunch of junk like rental quality Passats
- 48:44that people bought because they're like, "Well, it's this or a Nissan Altima,
- 48:48so maybe I'll try the Passat instead 'cause I've had an Altima before."
- 48:51But again, they're in a position even now where they're like, "This is the
- 48:55Volkswagen you should be driving." And everybody goes, "No, I want a manual
- 48:59transmission GTI that doesn't suck oil and burn its rings, and need a
- 49:03walnut treatment every 30,000 miles.
- 49:06Where are the cars of yesteryear?" "Well, we don't make those anymore.
- 49:09We make electric buses that no one gives two figs about." You know?
- 49:13It's like, come on.
- 49:14I know I threw out the dig about Volkswagen, but to get back to, to
- 49:17Maserati, let me ask you a question.
- 49:19Okay.
- 49:19It's kind of a hypothetical, but I think I already know the answer.
- 49:22Speaking about Maserati and their racing heritage and, you know, their
- 49:26desirability, can you name one person that had a m- poster of a Maserati
- 49:31on their wall when you were a kid?
- 49:35Maserati is the Oldsmobile Of the Ferrar- of the Ferrari ecosphere.
- 49:40Tell me I'm wrong.
- 49:41They are the Oldsmobile, they're the Buick, they're the not quite- Yes.
- 49:46Okay … the top, kinda under the radar.
- 49:49But some people want them because their dad had them and they were
- 49:52good cars, but majority of the people don't even know they exist.
- 49:57And I've often argued that Alfa Romeo is the Italian BMW, right?
- 50:00Where they make a car for everybody, 'cause every 10 minutes
- 50:03they're changing their design.
- 50:04Right.
- 50:04Which is my question to you.
- 50:06If this Maserati that we're talking about was wearing an Alfa Romeo badge and was
- 50:10painted red, would it change your mind?
- 50:13Not doing anything else but changing the logos, would you suddenly say,
- 50:16"Ooh, that's r- that car's really cool"?
- 50:18I mean, I think it's cool as a Maserati.
- 50:20To answer your direct question, yeah, I would say.
- 50:22It w- does it make it more desirable?
- 50:25Maybe.
- 50:25Does it make it less desirable?
- 50:27No.
- 50:28I mean, I just, m- the fact that it's a Maserati is, it's irrelevant.
- 50:32A cool car is a cool car.
- 50:33I feel like Maserati as a company doesn't really need to exist, to your point,
- 50:37because it could be sold as an Alfa Romeo.
- 50:39Right.
- 50:40It doesn't need to be sold as a Maserati.
- 50:42The Maserati is hanging on to something that doesn't exist anymore.
- 50:46Yeah.
- 50:46And they sh- they do not need to be around.
- 50:48I feel if Stellantis really wanted to make a wise business decision, they
- 50:51would get rid of Maserati and rebrand whatever, which they're already doing
- 50:56anyway, because Maserati, for the most part, most of their cars are s-
- 50:59something else rebranded, rebadged.
- 51:01Just get rid of the Maserati nameplate.
- 51:03Yeah.
- 51:03Nobody cares.
- 51:04Just, I don't care.
- 51:06The new generation doesn't care.
- 51:08Yeah.
- 51:08Fold them up under Alfa Romeo and call it a day.
- 51:09Exactly.
- 51:09Just, just all Maseratis are Alfa Romeos now.
- 51:10Done.
- 51:10I
- 51:14guarantee nobody would notice if the Maserati Levante- Oh my
- 51:18God … or the Ghibli, which is the Dodge Charger, disappeared.
- 51:22And you never saw one again.
- 51:23The only car that anybody would miss is the GT.
- 51:26That's true.
- 51:27The GranTurismo, which could be an Alfa.
- 51:29You know who might miss it?
- 51:30This guy might miss it.
- 51:33Oh, we can't not talk about domestic cars and take a visit over to General Motors.
- 51:38I didn't understand this article.
- 51:40Tanya, you read it.
- 51:41You sent it to me.
- 51:42I read it.
- 51:43I still don't understand it.
- 51:45I read it multiple times.
- 51:46What is our leader trying to say?
- 51:49Is he taking a dig at General Motors?
- 51:51Uh, it has to do with his seemingly infatuation with small cars
- 51:59and the kei car thing, right?
- 52:00Yeah.
- 52:00And so trying to tell them, I guess, they make cars that are too big.
- 52:04Well, yeah, and he's quoted as saying, "Your company, Mary, if you want
- 52:08it, I mean, you have the choice.
- 52:10It's tiny, a little beautiful car.
- 52:12I'm not sure you'd wanna get hit by one of your Silverados, okay?
- 52:15Or one of your Cadillacs.
- 52:16But you make them as safe as possible, right?
- 52:18You put a cocoon.
- 52:19You put, like, a little cocoon around them." See, I would've been a
- 52:21wonderful automobile- … designer.
- 52:24Like, this is absolute gibberish.
- 52:27Even the most hallucinogenic AI wouldn't come up with stuff like this.
- 52:31He is making a point that if you have seen the latest Silverado or the
- 52:36latest Escalade or just about anything that General Motors is making, if you
- 52:41painted them in camouflage, I would just say, "Yeah, those are military
- 52:45vehicles," 'cause they're massive.
- 52:47They're absolutely huge.
- 52:48They look like they're… You know, remember we talked about that Silverado
- 52:51that ran over that Lamborghini 'cause she didn't even see the guy?
- 52:53Now, granted, that was a bro-dozer, but the point is
- 52:56they're just big from the factory.
- 52:57So yeah, if I was driving a kei car, the little Daihatsu or something, or a
- 53:01Cappuccino, I mean, no, I would not wanna get hit by a Cadillac or a Silverado.
- 53:12So Brad, I wanna revisit something from last month.
- 53:15We were talking about Subaru, would you buy an STI if they did this,
- 53:19this, and this versus a Golf R versus a GR Corolla versus a Mazda 3 Speed.
- 53:24We kind of like racked them all up, and you said at the end of the day,
- 53:27your wallet dictated the answer.
- 53:30Your heart says you want a Golf R, but your wallet says, "I have a
- 53:34beer budget and I'm gonna take the Corolla because it's $25,000 cheaper."
- 53:38What if I told you that the GR Corolla now clocks in at $64,360?
- 53:45No, thank you.
- 53:46Would you still choose this over the Golf?
- 53:49Read what this says.
- 53:50$64,000 for a Corolla with no rear seats, no extra horsepower.
- 53:55So I could just buy a base one for less and take the seats out myself?
- 53:59Yes.
- 53:59Uh, yeah, I don't, I don't understand this, the last part.
- 54:01730 reasons it'll sell out immediately?
- 54:04Because they're only making 730 of them.
- 54:06Okay.
- 54:07So, well, that, that's just a stupid line.
- 54:09But they followed the Porsche model, where they take things
- 54:13away and charge more for the car.
- 54:14This is basically the Corolla version of a GT3 RS.
- 54:18Yes.
- 54:19You got it.
- 54:20No, when they first came out with the hatch, they had that,
- 54:23and it was the same thing.
- 54:24It was a racetrack ready.
- 54:25It had no back seats.
- 54:27I think it had a half cage in the back, and that was it.
- 54:30And it was sold for, I think at that time it was, 'cause this was
- 54:33already a couple years ago, it was like 50-something thousand dollars.
- 54:36But inflation, so you know, we're at 64.
- 54:38They're doubling down, Tanya.
- 54:40They're doubling down.
- 54:40OEM negative.
- 54:42Oh, this is OEM negative.
- 54:44They took stuff out of it.
- 54:46It's OEM negative.
- 54:47They stole Eric's idea.
- 54:49They went full OEM negative.
- 54:50Oh, man, see?
- 54:51Toyota always, always at the front end of creative thinking.
- 54:58Except those are the same ones that you took to the track and the motors blew up.
- 55:01Yeah, and they weren't covered under warranty.
- 55:03All right.
- 55:04Subaru.
- 55:06My God, Subaru.
- 55:07They are getting into the game.
- 55:09Monthly fees for remote starting your car.
- 55:13Shouldn't remote start at this point, especially if you have an automatic,
- 55:16remote start is like power windows.
- 55:18I mean, it should just be part of the car, standard option.
- 55:21From what I saw with, like, Lexus and I think maybe Mazda as well, I
- 55:26feel like it's a little misleading.
- 55:28It's not for, like, remote start completely, and please jump in
- 55:31and correct me if I'm wrong, but it's for the app that allows you
- 55:34to remote start from your phone.
- 55:36I feel like if you have a remote, you can still remote start, you
- 55:39know, in the, in that closed system.
- 55:41But if you want the convenience of the app on your phone to do remote start and
- 55:45various other things, I know Lexus does it this way, you have to pay for the app,
- 55:50and there's a subscription for the app.
- 55:51I don't know if it's for remote start altogether.
- 55:54It takes longer to do the stuff from your phone, especially after you've
- 55:59used your pin, your phone says, "Oh, it was offloaded 'cause you haven't
- 56:03used it in 10 minutes," gotta load the app, then it's gotta do two-factor
- 56:07authentication, and blah, blah.
- 56:09By the time you've done all that garbage, you could've walked up
- 56:12to the car and just started it.
- 56:14But I think you're making a fatal error.
- 56:16Oh, okay.
- 56:17You're assuming that people have common sense.
- 56:20Ah.
- 56:21This is the new car culture.
- 56:23They gotta have the car started for them, cooled a little bit
- 56:26before they get in because, "Oh my God, I just can't right now.
- 56:30It's so hot.
- 56:32I just can't.
- 56:33I can't even with this right now." First of all, younger generations, they
- 56:38all have their phones glued to their hands, so their phone is out anyway.
- 56:42They're already scrolling social media.
- 56:45They're already on TikTok and Instagram posting their reels and
- 56:48clicking views and all that stuff and talking to their friends.
- 56:51And so their phone is already open.
- 56:52They don't need to two-factor authenticate because they did that
- 56:54when they woke up in the morning.
- 56:56Ah, got it.
- 56:56And they never, never put it down.
- 56:58Well, that's a fair thing too, because you don't have a door lock cylinder
- 57:02on the, to open your car anymore.
- 57:04You don't need your key.
- 57:05It's just a fob.
- 57:06It's just a sensor that alerts in vicinity that you can unlock
- 57:09your doors and start your car.
- 57:10You're not putting that key anywhere.
- 57:12So if you have that key buried in your purse, a backpack, your pocket,
- 57:15but you have your phone glued to your hand, well, yeah, I can start
- 57:20my car and lock it with my phone.
- 57:21Why would I go dig through my pocket and pull my keys out?
- 57:23So why even generate a key?
- 57:25Why not- But today's car culture … yeah, why not just
- 57:27use the phone's NFC capabilities and, and open the door that way?
- 57:31Because that's how it's gonna charge you.
- 57:32It's like Apple Pay.
- 57:33Yeah.
- 57:33So to open the door, it's 50 cents every time you tap your
- 57:37phone against the door handle.
- 57:40You know what?
- 57:41I think Ford had it right when they had the little two-digit keypads.
- 57:45Yeah, yeah.
- 57:46They were ahead of their time.
- 57:47Like that guy in the first article, I don't want any of this stuff.
- 57:50I mean, I like remote start.
- 57:51I have it on my Jeep.
- 57:52I can be in my office and go boop boop in the wintertime, and it'll
- 57:56fire up and warm up and don't…
- 57:57But you know, it's a diesel, so it needs extra time.
- 57:59Anyway, but I was thinking about what you were saying, Brad.
- 58:02If you can communicate with this Subaru from your phone and remote
- 58:06start, that means the Subaru has cellular access, right?
- 58:10So it's connected to the grid.
- 58:11To your point of earlier, all these new cars are all connected
- 58:14to the Internet of Things.
- 58:15And so I don't want any of that stuff.
- 58:18But it also makes sense why they would charge a subscription fee, because who's
- 58:21paying for the cellular access to the car?
- 58:23Because the remote key fob just sends an RF signal.
- 58:27There's an RF, you know, receiver on the other side, and it goes,
- 58:30"Oh, s- I received the car start signal, and I'll start it."
- 58:32It doesn't need all this other infrastructure, Verizon and T-Mobile and
- 58:36all this other crap, to make it work.
- 58:38But I also wonder, for those that are addicted to their phones, if
- 58:41you're in the middle of Montana doing Subaru things like you're supposed to
- 58:46be doing, like the commercials say, how does one unlock and start their
- 58:51car when there's no cell service?
- 58:57Then they get, they get the special satellite cell
- 59:00subscription on their phone.
- 59:03They have the satellite phone so they can start their car.
- 59:05You gotta have Starlink to make it work.
- 59:07You pull out the phone from Jurassic Park.
- 59:11Do, do, do, do, do, do.
- 59:13What was the music it would do?
- 59:15As it was in the Tyrannosaurus rex feces.
- 59:18Oh my God, terrible.
- 59:21Well, Tanya, in spite of all this doom and gloom, you brought us an
- 59:25article that might shed a ray of hope.
- 59:28Car and Driver says, "These are the cars worth waiting for, 2026 through
- 59:322030." And is there anything on here that would be worth waiting for?
- 59:36Okay, let's see how many of these we haven't already talked about.
- 59:39This is that weirdly Russian-designed rendering of
- 59:43what the Stelvio could look like.
- 59:45This wasn't even like a thing from Alfa Romeo.
- 59:47I remember we dug this up and we fact checked this car, so that one's junk.
- 59:51This is that TT new Volare thing that we don't like, so I can wait forever
- 59:56as long as that doesn't get made.
- 59:58The new BMW M3 got revealed at Car Week.
- 1:00:01I'm sorry, it's ugly.
- 1:00:03It's the size of an M5.
- 1:00:04It's huge.
- 1:00:05Well, it's also the IM3.
- 1:00:07Let's, let's just be- Yeah, yeah, it's got the electrical-ness
- 1:00:10in it … sensitive to that.
- 1:00:11The only thing I like on this is the wheels.
- 1:00:14That's it.
- 1:00:14I think the wheels are cool.
- 1:00:16Moving on.
- 1:00:17Silverado shouldn't be on this list.
- 1:00:19Nobody salivates over the next version of the Silverado.
- 1:00:22They just don't wanna be hit by them.
- 1:00:23This Camaro goes back to the Camaro we talked about earlier,
- 1:00:26although it looks like it's ready for the next Transformers movie.
- 1:00:29Dodge Charger Hellcat V8.
- 1:00:32See, the V8's gonna be the OEM plus now.
- 1:00:34You're gonna be stuck with a six cylinder, and then you're gonna want the V8.
- 1:00:38I don't like those wheels on that.
- 1:00:39It looks terrible.
- 1:00:40Dodge Copperhead.
- 1:00:41I read about this.
- 1:00:42This is sort of the return of the Viper without being the return of the Viper,
- 1:00:46and Dodge wants to get into the pony wars.
- 1:00:49So if you look at the body styling, there was a Copperhead concept back when
- 1:00:53the second generation Viper came out.
- 1:00:55I actually have a model car of it.
- 1:00:56Pretty interesting, but I don't see that ever coming.
- 1:00:58I'm just gonna skip over whatever that thing is.
- 1:01:01Then we got the Mustang Dark Horse, which already exists, so
- 1:01:03this is just an- another whatever.
- 1:01:06The Ranchero as a pickup truck.
- 1:01:08Which is just a Maverick.
- 1:01:09Which is just a Ranger.
- 1:01:11I mean, who wants a four-cylinder turbo pickup truck?
- 1:01:14Forget that noise.
- 1:01:15All right, we got the Genesis GV90.
- 1:01:17This looks like something out of Batman the Animated Series.
- 1:01:20Uh, we have the Magma, the GV60 Magma, which is the Veloster rebadged.
- 1:01:26Then we have the Genesis Magma, which is never gonna happen.
- 1:01:29This is that weird Lexus, the GR GT thing.
- 1:01:33The successor to the LFA.
- 1:01:35I don't like it.
- 1:01:36Yeah, I
- 1:01:38don't think it looks good.
- 1:01:38Infinity, who cares?
- 1:01:38This one looks like the same Infinity they've been making for 20 years.
- 1:01:41This Jaguar is horrendous.
- 1:01:45Jeep Wrangler Scrambler, like yeah, okay, they had those
- 1:01:48in the '70s, the Scramblers.
- 1:01:50It's okay.
- 1:01:50I mean, I'm not gonna salivate over it.
- 1:01:52Then they're gonna do an LFA again?
- 1:01:54That looks better than this other GT thing up here.
- 1:01:57This thing looks terrible.
- 1:01:58Let's see.
- 1:01:59What else is on this list?
- 1:02:00CX 5, they ruined that.
- 1:02:02Mitsubishi doesn't make cars.
- 1:02:04Nissan- Ugh … this is the Ultima.
- 1:02:06Boxster, that's a lie 'cause they said they're not gonna make those.
- 1:02:09Nobody salivates a Ram.
- 1:02:10Dakota's com- ah, look at this thing.
- 1:02:13Ah.
- 1:02:13I wanna talk about the Scout 'cause that's, I, I, I would love one of those,
- 1:02:17but I don't wanna gloss over the Rivian.
- 1:02:19I think the Rivian, I'm gonna call it the Rex, the R3X.
- 1:02:22The Rivian Rex is definitely a car I'm looking forward to seeing, and
- 1:02:28would totally consider owning one.
- 1:02:29Never gonna hap- we talked about this car, like, a year ago, and now they're
- 1:02:32saying 2029 This would be the most interesting thing on the list Correct.
- 1:02:37Yeah.
- 1:02:37I agree, I agree with that 100%, yes.
- 1:02:39But the Scouts look cool, too.
- 1:02:40They a- they're like- Okay.
- 1:02:42All right … the Rivian- Who owns Scout?
- 1:02:44Volkswagen.
- 1:02:45These are Volkswagen?
- 1:02:46Oh, well then these aren't gonna get made.
- 1:02:47They're gonna get scrapped.
- 1:02:48Hold on.
- 1:02:48Let me do some general arithmetic for you, okay?
- 1:02:52They lost 100,000 people.
- 1:02:54They've closed factories all over the place.
- 1:02:56They're cutting half the cars that they make.
- 1:02:58Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, all this stuff.
- 1:03:00They, basically the toilet is swirling and the turds are going down the tube, right?
- 1:03:05The Scout requires a special factory to be built, unique tooling.
- 1:03:10It doesn't share anything with anything else, and they're gonna
- 1:03:13move forward with this project?
- 1:03:14And they gotta pay for Formula 1.
- 1:03:16Let's not forget that.
- 1:03:17They have to pay for Formula 1 somehow.
- 1:03:19They're gonna build these, and this is not something anybody
- 1:03:23is jumping up and down about.
- 1:03:25Because look at it.
- 1:03:26There's nothing about it that stands out.
- 1:03:29I could go get a Rivian that looks like this.
- 1:03:31No, the Traveler, the SUV.
- 1:03:32It looks like an old-school Bronco.
- 1:03:34Yeah, but that's my point.
- 1:03:35You substitute this for any other SUV that's currently available,
- 1:03:38nobody's gonna wait till 2030.
- 1:03:41It's gonna be like the Cybertruck.
- 1:03:43We're gonna be waiting for 10 years for these things.
- 1:03:44Nobody's gonna wait that long for one of these.
- 1:03:46And then when they get them, they're gonna be disappointed because
- 1:03:48they're gonna be based on technology from five years ago because it
- 1:03:51took them 20 years to make them.
- 1:03:53I'm gonna double down on what I was saying about Maserati.
- 1:03:56So- … I think Maserati, Maserati's a company that doesn't really
- 1:04:01need to exist anymore, and I'm surprised that it still does.
- 1:04:04I would say Mitsubishi is in that list as well.
- 1:04:06Right.
- 1:04:06There are also a slew of car manufacturers that have already died
- 1:04:11out that don't need to come back.
- 1:04:13Yeah.
- 1:04:13And personally, I think Scout is- Yes … one of them.
- 1:04:16International, I guess, when they were, they were owned by
- 1:04:18International, the International Scout.
- 1:04:20I also think, uh, I'm gonna get a lot of hate mail from our three
- 1:04:23listeners for this, the, uh, DeLorean does not need to come back.
- 1:04:27I think that is a pipe dream.
- 1:04:29I don't think that's happening anymore.
- 1:04:30That was already three, four years ago, so.
- 1:04:32No, but I think you get my point.
- 1:04:34Like, there are thing- Yeah … there are things that die, and they die for
- 1:04:36a reason, and they need to stay dead.
- 1:04:38Yeah, it's like saying we're gonna bring back the Bricklin.
- 1:04:40It's like no, we don't need to do that.
- 1:04:42There's no point.
- 1:04:43No.
- 1:04:43Talking about things that need to die and stay dead, as we switch into lost
- 1:04:48and found, Brad, your favorite section.
- 1:04:49I got some good lost and found for you guys this time.
- 1:04:52We sent one to the lost.
- 1:04:54Yet again, it has returned to the deep.
- 1:04:57I just wanted to share with our audience, share with you, I don't know if you saw
- 1:05:01the pictures or not, but pumpkin spice latte, may it rest in peace, is gone.
- 1:05:06Bye-bye, Norma Jean.
- 1:05:08Do you wanna sing Candle in the Wind?
- 1:05:09How good's your Elton John?
- 1:05:11Bye-bye, Norma Jean.
- 1:05:12Da, da, da, da.
- 1:05:14We'll have to talk
- 1:05:18offline, 'cause I, I'm wondering where my exhaust and my turbo and,
- 1:05:22like, w- where's all my stuff?
- 1:05:23In my shed.
- 1:05:25It's OEM minus.
- 1:05:27This is the definition of OEM minus right here.
- 1:05:30OEM negative Ghost Rider.
- 1:05:32Yeah, we have all that stuff, Brad.
- 1:05:33Don't worry.
- 1:05:34We didn't leave you hanging.
- 1:05:35Yeah, okay.
- 1:05:35I, yeah, it's, wow.
- 1:05:37Anything that didn't have mold on it got kept.
- 1:05:40Okay, okay.
- 1:05:41That's that.
- 1:05:41Goodbye.
- 1:05:42Ciao, ciao.
- 1:05:43What was the other picture?
- 1:05:44The gas tank?
- 1:05:44Was that- We're gonna get, we're gonna get to that … the piece?
- 1:05:46We're gonna get to that.
- 1:05:47Okay.
- 1:05:47We're gonna get… All right, so I got one for Tanya, lost and found.
- 1:05:51I don't know if she looked at this yet.
- 1:05:52Find of the day, one-of-a-kind Audi A4 Ute.
- 1:05:58Sells at no reserve.
- 1:05:59Look at this thing.
- 1:06:00Look at this.
- 1:06:01Yeah.
- 1:06:02The Audi Ranchero.
- 1:06:04Look at it.
- 1:06:04Yeah, look at that.
- 1:06:05Look at that.
- 1:06:07Look at that.
- 1:06:08Look how much mulch you could put in this thing.
- 1:06:11I do need a mulch hauler.
- 1:06:12I thought you were gonna buy the Amazon truck.
- 1:06:15It's a two-liter turbo though, so you gotta deal with that.
- 1:06:17So you might not be able to haul that much mulch.
- 1:06:19But it is a manual though.
- 1:06:21It is a manual.
- 1:06:21Look at that.
- 1:06:22How much did this sell for?
- 1:06:23Bidding ended July 29th.
- 1:06:25Sold for $7,300.
- 1:06:28What?
- 1:06:29That's it?
- 1:06:29That is more than I thought it would.
- 1:06:31Six-speed manual, all-wheel drive, Sonoma Green.
- 1:06:34Mm, yummy.
- 1:06:35This angle is the best though.
- 1:06:36Look at this butt on this thing.
- 1:06:38It is.
- 1:06:41Yeah.
- 1:06:42No.
- 1:06:42Had this been in Australia, it would've sold for 7,300 Australian dollars.
- 1:06:46Well, the problem is this wasn't made by Audi.
- 1:06:48This is somebody who took an A4 and then- It's a myth conversion, like all
- 1:06:53the other ones are The back is terrible.
- 1:06:55It has no shape that goes with the rest of it.
- 1:06:58Well, what shape is a pickup truck supposed to have?
- 1:07:01I don't know.
- 1:07:01More than that.
- 1:07:02Look, it's even got a slidey-out back window so you can get
- 1:07:04air, just like a Chevy S-10.
- 1:07:06Look at that.
- 1:07:06I mean, that's great.
- 1:07:08It's, unfortunately, there's a reason why Audi never made a pickup truck.
- 1:07:12Well, they claimed they were going to, remember.
- 1:07:14Let's not forget, it couldn't even fit a pair of golf clubs.
- 1:07:17You get all the best things here, except for the two-liter turbo.
- 1:07:20You get all-wheel drive, you get a manual, and you get a pickup truck.
- 1:07:24And it's an Audi.
- 1:07:25It's got the German engineering with American refinement.
- 1:07:27That was completely ruined when they removed the back half of the car.
- 1:07:30Is this OEM plus or minus?
- 1:07:32Like- Mm. This is OEM's special school bus.
- 1:07:45All right, Brad, I found one for you.
- 1:07:47I'm j- gonna try to convince you.
- 1:07:49I don't think you're gonna take the bait.
- 1:07:51Look at that.
- 1:07:53Probably not for sale anymore.
- 1:07:542003 GTI VR6 in reflex silver with a six speed, 4,500 bucks, with a
- 1:08:01n- fresher engine, 120,000 miles on the engine and drivetrain.
- 1:08:05I'm sure this car is gonna make somebody very mildly happy for a time.
- 1:08:11You wouldn't go back?
- 1:08:12It's not for me.
- 1:08:13GTI, especially with a VR6 in silver like Eddie, you'd stick with the Beetle?
- 1:08:19I 100% would if I didn't already have the Beetle, but as I told
- 1:08:22you before, I actually have grown very fond of the Beetle.
- 1:08:26I actually really enjoy driving it.
- 1:08:28I like the way it makes me feel, you know, and people can come at me in
- 1:08:32the comments, I don't give a shit.
- 1:08:33I really like the Beetle.
- 1:08:34I think GTIs for me, they have a special place in my heart, but
- 1:08:38I'm onto something different.
- 1:08:40Would you put a VR6 in the Beetle?
- 1:08:41I would not put a VR6 in my current Beetle unless the motor blew up,
- 1:08:46because that's what I would… I could potentially buy a, a junked two
- 1:08:50liter Beetle and put a VR6 in that.
- 1:08:53Nice.
- 1:08:53I mean, I love me some VR6, don't get me wrong.
- 1:08:56I know.
- 1:08:56That was, that is a super clean car.
- 1:08:58With fat fives and e- I mean, that's a nice ride right there.
- 1:09:01I, I'm sure it made somebody very happy.
- 1:09:03Nice ride.
- 1:09:04And speaking of good deals, we missed out.
- 1:09:07We could've gone to Mecum Harrisburg this month and picked up this
- 1:09:10beauty, a 1964 Studebaker Hawk GT for the low, low price of $2,200.
- 1:09:18And I got a quote from Andy Beckmann from the Studebaker National Museum,
- 1:09:21'cause I sent him this post, and he said, "That's a hellacious bargain.
- 1:09:25I knew the guy whose estate that was from." I mean, $2,200 is, like, nothing.
- 1:09:30I don't know anything about those.
- 1:09:32Is that a convertible?
- 1:09:33What is that top?
- 1:09:34W- what is going on there?
- 1:09:35Is that, like, a skullet?
- 1:09:36Shaved in the front and party in the back?
- 1:09:39Like, what is going on with this roof?
- 1:09:41Yeah, that two-tone effect.
- 1:09:43It's wild.
- 1:09:44Like, the door doesn't align properly with… That roof has to come off.
- 1:09:48Nope.
- 1:09:48I don't think so.
- 1:09:49I like the reverse rake, too.
- 1:09:51It sits down, like the back shocks are totally busted on it.
- 1:09:54It's squatting.
- 1:09:55Got the same nose as that Bugatti we talked about earlier.
- 1:09:58I mean, look at that thing.
- 1:09:59Studebaker.
- 1:10:00'64 Studebaker.
- 1:10:01Mm. Whopping 170 horsepower on a good day.
- 1:10:05Well, let's talk about seriously what could go wrong, formerly known as Lowered
- 1:10:10Expectations Lowered Expectations.
- 1:10:13Ah I'm
- 1:10:18gonna read the headline here.
- 1:10:19I can't believe this is actually a thing, but then again, I'm always
- 1:10:23suspicious of the dealerships.
- 1:10:24Dealer allegedly cannibalized customer's Kia to fix another.
- 1:10:29That's wild.
- 1:10:30Right?
- 1:10:31Wild.
- 1:10:31I wonder how many times that has actually happened at a dealership.
- 1:10:36Why is it taking so long for my car to get fixed?
- 1:10:38Did they take a bunch of sh- stuff off of it and put it on somebody else car?
- 1:10:41You know what I mean?
- 1:10:41Like, or is this just a fluke?
- 1:10:43That would incense me.
- 1:10:45To never go to the dealership?
- 1:10:46So I've always wondered why they couldn't do this with a car that was on their lot.
- 1:10:54That makes more sense.
- 1:10:56Doing it to somebody's, somebody else's car, that's theft.
- 1:11:00But is it also indicative of the fact that there's a supply chain problem?
- 1:11:04Like, if you have to cannibalize another car off the lot, that
- 1:11:07means you can't get the parts in a reasonable amount of time, right?
- 1:11:10But I'm sorry, is it a supply chain issue or is it a shitty
- 1:11:14sequencing issue of your dealership?
- 1:11:17This woman came in for a tire blowout, had nothing to do with her engine.
- 1:11:20That should've been, like, an hour fix.
- 1:11:22Also, why she took it to a dealer, sh- should've taken it to a tire
- 1:11:26shop to have a tire replaced, but we'll leave that aside.
- 1:11:29She should've been in and out.
- 1:11:30If you had some other car there that you're backed up and you have that person
- 1:11:33bitching at you that their car's not done, that's not this lady's problem.
- 1:11:37Yeah.
- 1:11:37This is theft.
- 1:11:38I think she can s- file not just a lawsuit, but she can call the
- 1:11:42police and file a police report for this, 'cause it's, it's theft.
- 1:11:45Vandalism, right?
- 1:11:46No, it's theft, that they took something off her car to give to somebody else.
- 1:11:50They took her property- But then they replaced it, didn't they, later?
- 1:11:54Did they?
- 1:11:54I don't know.
- 1:11:54But here's the problem.
- 1:11:54They're dismantling her engine.
- 1:11:54God knows what other
- 1:11:57things they took off of it, and the next thing you know, she's driving
- 1:12:00down the road, has some other issue.
- 1:12:02Who does she get to go blame?
- 1:12:03W- if you don't know that somebody messed- Right, and then they're like,
- 1:12:06"Oh, you're out of warranty-" Yeah
- 1:12:08"so we can't cover it," blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, even though they're the ones
- 1:12:11that broke the part in the first place.
- 1:12:12Even worse, you go in for the tire change.
- 1:12:15They do all this tomfoolery.
- 1:12:17They do fuck something up, so you have to come back for a bigger repair.
- 1:12:21Fraud.
- 1:12:25This next one.
- 1:12:29Do you guys watch this?
- 1:12:30This goes back to what we were talking about car culture, and this
- 1:12:33sort of just bookended it for me.
- 1:12:35First of all, I wanna know what the word jawn means, and I'm
- 1:12:39not talking J-O-H-N or J-O-N.
- 1:12:42What is J-A-W-N?
- 1:12:44And I assume it's pronounced like yawn, because Hooked on Phonics worked for me.
- 1:12:49So what is jawn?
- 1:12:51I had to l- I had to wait to see how the, what the spelling of jawn was.
- 1:12:55J-A-W-N.
- 1:12:56So according to Urban Dictionary We've had to use that a lot today … there's
- 1:13:00a definition that goes all the way back to 2003, "A word used by Philly cats to
- 1:13:05describe anything and everything." So nothing and everything at the same time.
- 1:13:10Mm-hmm.
- 1:13:11And in a, a more recent 2012 definition, also terms as a Philly
- 1:13:15slang for a person, place, or thing.
- 1:13:17"I can't find that jawn anywhere." "Do you see that movie?
- 1:13:20That jawn was horrible." "Yeah, I got that same jawn from Macy's." So
- 1:13:24it's like joint or junk and all that stuff from back in the '90s, right?
- 1:13:28It's like the same thing.
- 1:13:29Yes, because the other definition does say that the New York cats,
- 1:13:32ooh, we're talking cats, the New York folk interject with the word joint.
- 1:13:36Yeah.
- 1:13:36But it doesn't quite, it doesn't quite convey the same feeling as jawn.
- 1:13:39And I wouldn't be surprised if because it's social media, you know that there are
- 1:13:43words that they can't say because- Yeah
- 1:13:45they'll get flagged by the algorithm.
- 1:13:47Right.
- 1:13:47So they can't say suicide, you can't say killing.
- 1:13:50They probably can't say joint because of drug affiliation.
- 1:13:53Right, right, right.
- 1:13:54And now that I've said those words, they'll probably get us canceled, so.
- 1:13:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:57Well, that's okay.
- 1:13:58Doesn't matter.
- 1:13:59Yeah.
- 1:13:59Who cares?
- 1:13:59I saw jawn anywhere.
- 1:14:03I'ma go down to VIR and watch all that jawn going on.
- 1:14:07Did you guys see this video?
- 1:14:09This is OEM Plus right here, and Brad, I also found this and I put
- 1:14:12it in here because you were going to do a wiper delete on Pumpkin Spice.
- 1:14:18I did one on the Mark5.
- 1:14:20Yeah, but you didn't do it like these guys did it.
- 1:14:22Yeah, I did.
- 1:14:23I did it on my R32.
- 1:14:23I mean, I haven't watched this whole thing yet.
- 1:14:24Yeah, but you didn't do it like these guys did it with some Home Depot stuff
- 1:14:27that they had to put on a grinding wheel.
- 1:14:28Oh, no, no, no, no, no, I actually bought the correct part.
- 1:14:32So he shatters his rear glass?
- 1:14:34Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:34Nice.
- 1:14:35I think my favorite line, despite all the jawn, was he grinds this part to go
- 1:14:40put it on there to put on the delete, which probably wasn't even for this
- 1:14:43car, and he's like, "Flush as a toilet."
- 1:14:46And I'm like, "Skibidi."
- 1:14:51I mean, he just shatters that glass.
- 1:14:54But also, I'm sorry, don't they sell rear wiper delete kits?
- 1:14:58Yes, from ECS for, like, 20 bucks.
- 1:15:00Like, come on, I mean- They probably are super easy to install
- 1:15:03and don't have this happen?
- 1:15:05Designed for the car, for the glass.
- 1:15:07Okay.
- 1:15:07All right.
- 1:15:08I mean, this is literally the definition of square peg, round hole.
- 1:15:11I like the one guy comments, "I used a black smooth plastic plug from
- 1:15:14Lowe's. Little bit of silicone and it was flush and black like the tint."
- 1:15:18Yeah, and he probably spent the same amount as had he ordered the part from
- 1:15:22ECS, but that's neither here to there.
- 1:15:24Oh my God.
- 1:15:25It's because you used the John to tighten the John onto the John.
- 1:15:28Next time use a John instead of the John that you want John Johned.
- 1:15:33There it is.
- 1:15:34This is why the comments are the best.
- 1:15:36It's like Smurf.
- 1:15:38All right.
- 1:15:39Well, we basically covered rich people things earlier, but we do have two extra
- 1:15:43value meal options here, and I wanna bring up something that's definitely
- 1:15:47going to end up on our Christmas list because, you know, i- it kind of is rich
- 1:15:51people things in the sense that if you have enough of these that you need a
- 1:15:56special storage unit for them- Then you might be doing some rich people things.
- 1:16:00I stumbled across, if this isn't fake, Tex Racks, T-E-X Racks, and
- 1:16:06they're specifically these, like, racks designed for your 1/64 scale
- 1:16:12Hot Wheels, Matchbox, et cetera.
- 1:16:14I think these are super cool.
- 1:16:16They might be a little janky.
- 1:16:17I wanna get one, but I, I don't know if I trust the website.
- 1:16:21This is where I've reached in my life.
- 1:16:23If I can't buy it on Amazon, then it's not legitimate.
- 1:16:27Or if the manufacturer doesn't have a store on Amazon, they're not legit,
- 1:16:30'cause Amazon legitimizes all of their sellers, or at least they try to.
- 1:16:34Same with Walmart.
- 1:16:35So I'm like, "I don't know." But if somebody is willing to buy a
- 1:16:39Tex Rack and then let me know.
- 1:16:41These jaws be janky.
- 1:16:42That's what I'm thinking.
- 1:16:43But I like the idea.
- 1:16:44Why are they so expensive, too?
- 1:16:45They're cloth.
- 1:16:47Did you watch the video of the woman putting the stuff in place?
- 1:16:49I did.
- 1:16:50I did, and that's why I'm like, how janky are these?
- 1:16:53But here's the other thing.
- 1:16:54You look at this plastic, and you know this plastic.
- 1:16:57This is the plastic that is like a Oreo container.
- 1:17:00You know how thin the Oreo containers are?
- 1:17:02They almost crumple like a paper bag.
- 1:17:04Like, I'm feeling like this is the type of plastic that they're using here.
- 1:17:07I feel like you go to Target, you buy one of those fabric closet hanger wardrobes-
- 1:17:13Yes … and you make one yourself.
- 1:17:15Why pay $200 for one?
- 1:17:18For the plastic shelves, that's what you're paying for.
- 1:17:20If they don't fall out of- Just, just eat a bunch of Oreos- Yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:23100%, right … and then use that.
- 1:17:25Speaking of Subaru earlier, you know, Lego has its Icons series, and they
- 1:17:30have a bunch of different stuff that is actually created by people that
- 1:17:33are, like, over on Rebrickable, and they'll post them up on Lego's website.
- 1:17:37And if it gets enough interest and enough votes, then Lego will take the design,
- 1:17:41look it over, Lego-fy it to make it easier and all that kind of stuff, you know, less
- 1:17:45rare parts and less unsanctioned building techniques, those kinds of things.
- 1:17:50But up on the docket, along with, you know, we've seen in the past the Ayrton
- 1:17:54Senna, the Nigel Mansell, and the Michael Schumacher racing set, somebody put
- 1:17:59together a Colin McRae Subaru rally set.
- 1:18:03This opens a door for a lot of things, 'cause they had, did already
- 1:18:06have the Audi rally car a while ago, but I think this is super cool.
- 1:18:09Like, I'd like to see this get made.
- 1:18:11So go out to lego.com and go vote for it.
- 1:18:13Right, Tanya?
- 1:18:14Yeah.
- 1:18:15I love the rally stage pit stop thing where you can take the car
- 1:18:18apart and set it up that way.
- 1:18:19I think that's really slick.
- 1:18:20It's got a couple different ways you can position the car.
- 1:18:23Well, we have reached that part of the episode where we're
- 1:18:27gonna go down south Florida.
- 1:18:44We're really gonna go north to New Jersey.
- 1:18:46So I found this first one.
- 1:18:48It's brilliant.
- 1:18:49Dad used to always say, "You gotta watch out for Roscoe and Buford
- 1:18:52hanging out in the bushes." I mean, this takes it to a whole new level.
- 1:18:55Cop dressed as a shrub.
- 1:19:00Just looking at him, I mean, he looks like something out of Sesame Street.
- 1:19:03He looks like Swamp Thing.
- 1:19:04Yeah, but it's the binoculars.
- 1:19:06It makes him… But he's scruffy like Snuffleupagus.
- 1:19:08Maybe it's George Russell in that suit.
- 1:19:10But anyway, cop dressed as a shrub wrote 74 tickets in six hours.
- 1:19:16And this wasn't for speeding people, this was to catch people distracted
- 1:19:19driving on their cell phone.
- 1:19:21Oh.
- 1:19:21Doom scrolling while they're driving.
- 1:19:23So I do not feel sorry for any of these 74 people.
- 1:19:26But in order to catch these folks, you're dressed as a bush.
- 1:19:30Do you walk out into the middle of the road?
- 1:19:32No.
- 1:19:32So, so this was a coordinated effort amongst many officers.
- 1:19:36Oh.
- 1:19:36So he would radio down to somebody else, and then further down the road
- 1:19:41there was a group of officers that then were pulling the cars over.
- 1:19:44'Cause I was gonna say, if you're trying to catch distracted drivers and
- 1:19:47you're dressed as a bush, there's a high probability you're gonna get hit.
- 1:19:52But that is clever.
- 1:19:53He blends in.
- 1:19:54I mean, if you are not paying attention, you will not see him, despite the fact
- 1:19:58that that is not a color found in nature.
- 1:20:00Well, some places in nature, but not in New Jersey.
- 1:20:04All right.
- 1:20:04What's this one about, Tanya?
- 1:20:06I mean, this is pretty bad.
- 1:20:08You just gotta take the, the time to watch the video.
- 1:20:11It's only a minute.
- 1:20:11But observe what's happened.
- 1:20:13Did he just stop in the middle of the road?
- 1:20:15This person just stopped- Why?
- 1:20:17… on a highway.
- 1:20:17Oh, oh, oh- On an interstate … oh, oh, oh.
- 1:20:21That semi-truck almost took the three of them out.
- 1:20:24Geez Louise, nobody's paying attention.
- 1:20:27There it is.
- 1:20:27Boom.
- 1:20:27There it is.
- 1:20:28And then watch, just leaves.
- 1:20:30Wow.
- 1:20:31That was a close call, too.
- 1:20:33And now they've got a car legitimately in the middle of the road, 'cause
- 1:20:36he got clobbered by the van.
- 1:20:37Dead in the water.
- 1:20:39Oh, the tow truck's right there, but he's like, "Nah, dog." He's like, "Nah, John.
- 1:20:42I ain't picking you up." I ain't got time for that, John.
- 1:20:49That's terrible.
- 1:20:50This happened in Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, and apparently they're
- 1:20:54asking people to stop doing this.
- 1:20:58So this is not the first time apparently.
- 1:21:01Kind of- What?
- 1:21:01It's in the Ohio area.
- 1:21:03There were two other incidents on a different interstate where people
- 1:21:07apparently were just stopping.
- 1:21:08Begs the question, are you trying to cause an accident?
- 1:21:11I think they are.
- 1:21:13Uh, they have to be.
- 1:21:14Like, is this the new TikTok game, that I'm just gonna stop on a highway
- 1:21:18and see what carnage can happen?
- 1:21:20I mean, if Tide PODs won't kill you, this definitely will.
- 1:21:23Like, what excuse do you have if you're lost?
- 1:21:26You pull over.
- 1:21:26You don't stop on a highway where presumably the speed
- 1:21:30limit, at a minimum, was 55.
- 1:21:32So you know people are going more than that.
- 1:21:34Somebody did this to me earlier today on my way home from the grocery store.
- 1:21:38Speed limit's 45, and they came to a complete stop at a green light.
- 1:21:42What?
- 1:21:43It d- it wasn't like the light had just turned green.
- 1:21:45The light was literally green the whole time I could see it from,
- 1:21:48like, way back, and the car literally was just driving up and came to a
- 1:21:52complete stop in the lane I was in.
- 1:21:54Are you sure it was green?
- 1:21:56Because, you know, green and red, colorblind, it might've been red.
- 1:21:59You know, it was green to me, and I'm not colorblind.
- 1:22:03It wasn't like the gold and white or the blue and black dress.
- 1:22:06It was green.
- 1:22:07The fricking light was green.
- 1:22:08So you say, allegedly.
- 1:22:11You could- What color is the stop sign again?
- 1:22:12The stop sign is purple.
- 1:22:14Oh, okay.
- 1:22:14That makes a lot of sense.
- 1:22:16Like your face after I hit you with one.
- 1:22:19All right.
- 1:22:20Well, we are going to Florida now, aren't we, Tanya?
- 1:22:23We do have a Florida one, and this one's, not that you should be doing
- 1:22:27illegal street racing, but check your mirrors before you do so, so that the
- 1:22:31cop isn't filming you from behind.
- 1:22:34No.
- 1:22:34Oh my God.
- 1:22:37So that when you go buck 20, he's not already right there ready to pull
- 1:22:41you over 'cause he was behind you.
- 1:22:45And then they all drive Ford Explorers now too, so it's not like
- 1:22:48they're super obvious or whatever.
- 1:22:50The drivers didn't recognize the SUV as a police vehicle.
- 1:22:54Was he dressed as a bush or a shrub?
- 1:22:56I mean, maybe.
- 1:22:58How about you just don't do this, like, street race?
- 1:23:00Also- Or don't do it when there's cars around at least … because it's
- 1:23:05the excitement of the street racing glorified by Fast and the Furious.
- 1:23:08If you, see if you have to make the time to go to the drag
- 1:23:10strip, it's not as exciting.
- 1:23:12It's not as, as impulsive as it is when you do it on the road and basically
- 1:23:16endanger all the civilians around you.
- 1:23:18Because it's not like when we were growing up and there was
- 1:23:21a lot less traffic on the road.
- 1:23:23But still, go to the track, then you can really show off how OEM negative you are.
- 1:23:28No video, though.
- 1:23:29That sucks.
- 1:23:30No.
- 1:23:30Also, I'm just gonna say #roofrails.
- 1:23:31You
- 1:23:33want to spot a police interceptor Explorer?
- 1:23:37They don't have roof rails.
- 1:23:39Dun, dun, dun.
- 1:23:42Let's go behind the pig ball to talk about America's News I have
- 1:23:47an update, NASCAR Jason next time.
- 1:23:50Ready for this?
- 1:23:51Oh my God, you're following this more than I am.
- 1:23:53It's like Formula 1.
- 1:23:54If I don't stay in lockstep with this, then you're just gonna give
- 1:23:58me a bunch of flack that, you know, I didn't know because I wasn't
- 1:24:01paying attention or whatever.
- 1:24:02So I'm paying attention.
- 1:24:03Days of Thunder 2, I'm gonna put alleged, in air quotes, alleged plot
- 1:24:08points according to the Instagrams.
- 1:24:11I read that Cole Trickle is now a team owner, and he is facing the most
- 1:24:15challenging season yet for his team because his rival team is using AI
- 1:24:20and analytics to win with perfect race, and he doesn't believe in
- 1:24:24that, and he's gotta drive by feel.
- 1:24:26So rather than supporting his younger drivers that drive for him on his NASCAR
- 1:24:31team, oh no, Tom Cruise, Mr. Mission Impossible, Cole Trickle, gonna jump
- 1:24:37back in to a NASCAR and show all these young whippersnappers how it's done
- 1:24:43old school and win a championship.
- 1:24:46That is allegedly the plot of Days of Thunder 2.
- 1:24:49Are you still gonna watch it?
- 1:24:51Yes.
- 1:24:51Can I just say?
- 1:24:52Go for it.
- 1:24:53I've seen this movie before.
- 1:24:54Oh, really?
- 1:24:55With this exact plot.
- 1:24:57It's called- F1?
- 1:24:59It's called Cars 3.
- 1:25:01I was gonna… That was the first thing I thought of actually.
- 1:25:06Where Lightning McQueen is out there having a good old time with his
- 1:25:09buddies, and then the new Jackson Storm comes up with all the analytics and
- 1:25:14checking his tire pressures and, and everything, and he's so much faster.
- 1:25:18He's going 201, 202, 203 miles an hour, and Lightning McQueen
- 1:25:23doubles down on the boomerness.
- 1:25:25He goes back to Doc's Roots and starts trying to race on the street, on, uh,
- 1:25:30on the sand, on the dirt, and he goes to the beach, and he go- goes to the hollow
- 1:25:34and w- and loses a destruction derby, and he finds Smokey, Doc's old coach.
- 1:25:40Got it.
- 1:25:41So if it's going to follow the plot of Cars 3, then Cole Trickle
- 1:25:46is not gonna be successful in his endeavors, and he is gonna have
- 1:25:49to mentor a junior driver to win.
- 1:25:53This is Tom Cruise.
- 1:25:54He doesn't lose at anything.
- 1:25:56Tom Cruise doesn't lose anything.
- 1:25:59Tanya brings up a great point.
- 1:26:00So yes, if they follow the Cars 3 formula, then she's right.
- 1:26:06Tom Cruise/Lightning McQueen finds out that he's not fast enough even with
- 1:26:11the old tricks, so he tags in his new female driver, 'cause Cruise was played
- 1:26:17by a female character, a, a female voiceover, so I'm ass- I'm, I'm making
- 1:26:22the assumption that she's female.
- 1:26:23She's non-binary 'cause she's a car, but I'm making the
- 1:26:26assumption that she's female.
- 1:26:28Have to tag in a female driver to, to win it all, and they're
- 1:26:32gonna beat Jackson Storm.
- 1:26:33There you go.
- 1:26:34Boom.
- 1:26:34Days of Thunder 2.
- 1:26:35But this is also the plot of the F1 movie where- Yes … ancient
- 1:26:40100-year-old Brad Pitt comes to show the young ones how it's really done.
- 1:26:46And drive it old school.
- 1:26:47Yes.
- 1:26:48It's Formula 1 with NASCARs.
- 1:26:50It's gonna be terrible, and you're still gonna watch it.
- 1:26:53Because old culture is always better than new culture.
- 1:26:56Right, Eric?
- 1:26:57Is that like the previous Subaru is less ugly than the current
- 1:27:01Subaru when you compare them?
- 1:27:02Is that, is it, we're going back to that?
- 1:27:04This is old car culture is better than new car culture.
- 1:27:07I guess so.
- 1:27:07Yeah, I mean, that's was the theme of the episode, right?
- 1:27:10Is- Exactly … that's exactly where we were.
- 1:27:12And it all comes together.
- 1:27:14Way to pull that thread.
- 1:27:15Well done, sir. Well done.
- 1:27:17In other news, there is allegedly a America250 race.
- 1:27:21It's this weekend.
- 1:27:23Ah.
- 1:27:23You have not missed it yet.
- 1:27:24It's on Sunday.
- 1:27:25I think practice, qualifying, whatever is probably Saturday.
- 1:27:28But please do watch this video with the sound so you can hear Alex
- 1:27:31Palou taking a virtual ride around, or at least read what he's saying.
- 1:27:35This is going to be the lamest-
- 1:27:38race where every corner is second gear, which we already know from the track
- 1:27:42map, because it's straight, 90-degree turn, straight, 90-degree turn,
- 1:27:45straight, 90-degree turn, we're done.
- 1:27:46But wait till the end, because if this is truly what that looks like,
- 1:27:51there's gonna be a massive wreck.
- 1:27:53Yeah.
- 1:27:53At pit lane.
- 1:27:54Terrible.
- 1:27:55You come into a 90-degree turn, and then, boom, there's
- 1:27:58a wall that you have to split.
- 1:28:00Immediately go into pit or don't go into pit.
- 1:28:03I'm like, "That's wild." Aside from the fact that this is obviously on iRacing
- 1:28:06and it's, you know, a simulation, see, this is what iRacing gets wrong.
- 1:28:11You know what's missing here?
- 1:28:12Pedestrians.
- 1:28:13Well, all the blown water mains, the potholes, the metro buses
- 1:28:17abandoned on the side of the road.
- 1:28:19Like, this doesn't look like DC.
- 1:28:20This could be anywhere.
- 1:28:21This road is too smooth.
- 1:28:23This is not what they're gonna actually be racing on, 'cause
- 1:28:25they're not gonna pave anything.
- 1:28:26They haven't spent any time doing… This looks like garbage.
- 1:28:29This is worse than Long Beach.
- 1:28:31This is worse than St. Pete.
- 1:28:32This is worse than any… Look at that thing at the end.
- 1:28:34That turn is so dangerous to me.
- 1:28:36I'll be interested to see how that actually looks- That's
- 1:28:39awful … in real life.
- 1:28:40I'm glad I'm going in the opposite direction that weekend.
- 1:28:43Me too.
- 1:28:43That's all I gotta say.
- 1:28:45All right.
- 1:28:45Well, our motorsports news is brought to you in part by Enduraverse,
- 1:28:49powered by Hyperdev, America's premier endurance racing community.
- 1:28:53And be sure to check it out online where you can now join as
- 1:28:56a free member under the Explorer program, and that's free forever.
- 1:29:01So be sure to check it out online and become a member at enduraverse.com.
- 1:29:05Well, let's wrap up this episode with a quick trackside report.
- 1:29:09You asked Brad about that gas tank earlier.
- 1:29:12We found the problem.
- 1:29:13It's a Ford.
- 1:29:14Well, yeah, that, yes, is part number one.
- 1:29:16But we might actually have a running car now.
- 1:29:19Long story short, after diagnosing all this stuff, replace this, change the
- 1:29:23sensor, do the thing, all the things we talked about the last time, we got
- 1:29:26down to the point where we traced it to two remaining sensors that were
- 1:29:31tied to the ECU that were giving this electrical fault that we had.
- 1:29:35But where, oh where, would Ford put the sensors?
- 1:29:40Above the gas tank, up against the bulkhead, which requires you to drop
- 1:29:45the gas tank to replace said sensors.
- 1:29:48Took us a little bit to get the sensors, 'cause they had to be ordered and
- 1:29:51shipped and came from Lord knows where, because nobody has anything anymore.
- 1:29:55It's all just-in-time inventory.
- 1:29:57So put the sensors in, put it all back together, put the gas
- 1:30:00tank back up, make sure it didn't leak, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:30:02And then what happened, Tanya?
- 1:30:04But it ran And how did it run?
- 1:30:07As it should.
- 1:30:08Oh, amazing.
- 1:30:10Amazing, after all that time and all that.
- 1:30:11Yay.
- 1:30:12And that was the first time Tanya drove it more than, I don't know, like, 10 feet.
- 1:30:15So what do we think?
- 1:30:16I mean, it's not gonna win any land speed records, but it'll be
- 1:30:22a perfectly good momentum car.
- 1:30:24She did a one wheel peel.
- 1:30:25Compare it to a Mark 4 Volkswagen, the driving experience.
- 1:30:29I don't know, 'cause- 'Cause you've driven a f- almost fully
- 1:30:32track prepared Mark 4, and you've driven, now, a track prepared Focus.
- 1:30:38Arguably, this isn't a track prepared- No … car, right?
- 1:30:41This is like a stage one car.
- 1:30:42Suspension-wise, like, they're gonna be night and day.
- 1:30:45Well, true.
- 1:30:45And, I mean, just driving it up the street, accelerating it, I don't know.
- 1:30:51It makes a whole bunch of noise.
- 1:30:54Especially from the air box.
- 1:30:55I like noise.
- 1:30:56Yeah, I'm excited.
- 1:30:57So that means we just gotta hurry up and wait now.
- 1:31:00There's really nothing left to do other than just get our registration
- 1:31:04intact, get our tech forms.
- 1:31:06We were at the starting line the last time we tried to do this,
- 1:31:09so what's next for the car?
- 1:31:11It's sitting, it's waiting, it's, you know, we go out and start it and move it
- 1:31:14a little bit just to make sure it's okay.
- 1:31:15And Summit Point October, and then if we can survive Summit Point, I'm gonna s-
- 1:31:20try to stretch my wings a little bit and I wanna go to Road Atlanta in December.
- 1:31:24So hopefully we'll get two races out of it this year.
- 1:31:26If not, we'll get one race out of it next year, and we plan for starting next season
- 1:31:29in Mid-Ohio and then trying to do some of the races we didn't get to do this year.
- 1:31:33But we're back on target, and unfortunately, after all these false
- 1:31:37starts, we'll be celebrating a year of this project from when we said we were
- 1:31:41gonna do it by starting at Summit Point, because that's when we went last year to
- 1:31:45kind of scope things out and do recon.
- 1:31:47Sucks that we didn't get a little bit more experience, and then I am on the
- 1:31:50reserve list with the Studebaker team for the Gingerman race, but all of their
- 1:31:54drivers are committed, so they said unless somebody bows out, they don't
- 1:31:57wanna do the penalty thing where you take an extra driver and then, like, the max
- 1:32:02is four or something they were saying.
- 1:32:03So I was like, "That's fine." So they got me on standby, and then they were
- 1:32:06talking about potentially doing Road America, which not everybody wants to do.
- 1:32:10And even in a slow car, I think Road America would be a blast.
- 1:32:13I'd be able to check that off my list.
- 1:32:14So hopefully some more endurance racing action.
- 1:32:17This year's sort of a meh, but maybe next year we can really get into it.
- 1:32:21Looking forward to it.
- 1:32:22And then you're out of commission too, right, Brad?
- 1:32:24Uh, yep.
- 1:32:25September 9th I'll have my surgery, and then I will come out to support
- 1:32:29the team on, in October at Summit Point, but I won't, I will be virtually
- 1:32:33useless, uh, with the broken wing, so.
- 1:32:36What's the heal time on that?
- 1:32:38I'll be in a, a sling for six weeks- Oh, wow
- 1:32:41and then I can resume somewhat normal activity without any
- 1:32:45lifting or anything like that.
- 1:32:47And then four months- Oh … and then four months to kind of start doing
- 1:32:51light lifting, and then six months I should be kind of almost back to normal.
- 1:32:55Wow.
- 1:32:55So New Jersey next year, right?
- 1:32:57I, I'm definitely planning on racing next year.
- 1:33:00Very good.
- 1:33:00Very good.

- 1:34:18Sorry Sorry.
- 1:34:20So wha- what is this sorry stuff?
- 1:34:22I didn't realize you guys were on time waiting for me.
- 1:34:26Tanya's usually got technical issues.
- 1:34:27You don't have a life, so you're just sitting there
- 1:34:29doing a whole bunch of nothing.
- 1:34:30Hey now.
- 1:34:31Hey now.
- 1:34:32Hey now.
- 1:34:32Yeah, remember, we don't do the intro anymore.
- 1:34:34We don't, we don't do the welcome to the drive-through, this is number blah,
- 1:34:38blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:34:39Where we talk about all car adjacent automotive news.
- 1:34:43Drive-through window number one, number 71.
- 1:34:47Anyway.
- 1:34:47I do things for the betterment of the automotive enthusiast community.
- 1:34:51That's what I do.
- 1:34:52Yep, yep, yep.
- 1:34:54AKA nothing.
- 1:34:55You know, we could only all be so fortunate.
- 1:34:59I gotta look at it again.
- 1:35:01I don't think I have access to it anymore, actually.
- 1:35:03Yeah, I gotta subscribe, which I'm not gonna do.
- 1:35:05Yeah, can't get to the rest of the article either, so you're gonna
- 1:35:07have to jog it from memory here.
- 1:35:09You just got, you got bamboozled by the Mazdas on the screen.
- 1:35:12That's what it was.
- 1:35:13Um- I swear I thought she had a sound machine, and she pushed
- 1:35:17a button and it was like-
- 1:35:18like, um, apartment or something.
- 1:35:21I was like, what the… Everybody say hi to Catherine.
- 1:35:24Yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:24Brad has a, has a guest.
- 1:35:25Can't really see you.
- 1:35:27Hi.
- 1:35:29Hello.
- 1:35:29Sorry about that.
- 1:35:30No worries.
- 1:35:30That's Louie too.
- 1:35:32Nice.
- 1:35:32Whoops.
- 1:35:34Go for it.
- 1:35:34I have other stuff in there that's really good.

- 1:35:48That's our next segment, the more politically, you know, focused segment.
- 1:35:51Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:53Where I put my tinfoil hat on and talk about the governments trying to control
- 1:35:56us all, and Tanya makes fun of Trump.
