Latest / Niner Noise Podcast on the 49ers / 49ers offseason: Where could the team make a splash with external free agents?
Transcript
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, hello, and welcome to another edition of the nine or noise podcast parts of the fancited podcast network.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Robert Morrison, a contributor at nine or noise.com, and here with me and the throws of the complicated time of the year, fellow contributor Mr. Oksha's David Dula Oksha's.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: It is March, and that means the NFL New Year is nearly upon us, but how are you?
- 0:30[SPEAKER_02]: busy Robert, but across all aspects of life, including the fact that the NFL, despite of being the new year, that actually means things are picking up.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: So a lot of noise coming out of the combine, but a lot of different things, some 49th related, some not.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think today there was like a spathe of news about who's getting tagged and who, yeah, it's a busy time and I think
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: It's fun because I say this every year if you like which makes me happy because I think it's a super cool like I like this phrase.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: I like that I use it like this is the time of year where Like everyone thinks they can win the Super Bowl so depending on where you are as a flight where your team is as a fan
- 1:16[SPEAKER_02]: You get excited about that in different ways, either like you guys sucked last year, but it's like, okay, we could have turn around or you're like pretty good and it's like, all right, are there pieces can we add people and so like change is in the air changes always fun, I think, um,
- 1:37[SPEAKER_02]: in football anyway.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, I mean, it's busy.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's only one team that like, I think goes into this and like doesn't feel like man.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: I want things to change and that's the team that won the Super Bowl.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_02]: But I don't know.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's really it's an exciting time.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_02]: And then I feel like free agency starts and it gets less exciting because then.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: team never signs anyone you want them to but hopefully that but you know this year I think will be different and that's what we're going to talk about a bunch of different players because I really I really do think that the 49ers are going to they're going to splurge I don't know what position exactly but I feel in my bones that these can be a big money move this this offseason.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: I would like that.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: That'd be nice.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: You mentioned the combat and so that's over now.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, this is this is where, and I say this every year, this is where my expertise kind of fades out a little bit because I don't pay that close attention to the college game until people start talking about, like, oh, this player would be good for the 49ers and then Mike O'Kam, I can pay attention to him now.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's in a while catch a little college football and be like, oh, look at that guy.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: He seems good But that's not that's not and that is not as not as versed in it.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's why we we talk to other people who know more with their talking about Although you're pretty pretty savvy about those things too, but also the the
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: Um, franchise chat, tag, and transition tag deadline was four o'clock this afternoon.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's four o'clock Eastern time.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so like we just kind of run through it really quickly.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously the 49ers did not play that tag on anybody.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think the only time they did.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: when since Shanahan and Lynch had been here was on Robbie Gold who they ended up just signing to an extension that year anyway.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: It was just sort of like hey we want to we want to sign you but we don't we're not ready to but we haven't figured out how to do it yet kind of thing.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: So Daniel Jones was given the transition tag for the cults.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's that name is interesting specifically because of how it might impact another name that we'll talk about
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: later when we start talking about free agents, as you alluded to earlier, the Bengals opted not to throw a franchise tag or a transition tag on Tray Hendrickson, so he is a full free agent, a very interesting situation there.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about that name, I think, as well.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: No franchise tag for Kenneth Walker, so the Seahawks are going to let him test free agency and see how that works out for him.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: That will be very interesting to see, you know, coming off the Super Bowl MVP, but also he's been a good but not great player during his time in Seattle.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then on the other side of that, Bree's Hall was given the franchise tag with the Jets.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: So he will be staying this year with with the Jets.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: I imagine
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: the goal will be to to work out a long time deal with him.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to pay him $14.3 million this year.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: George Pickins was already previously given that franchise tender.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: That is a 27, just over $27 million paid a for him.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: Which, you know, relative to what they would probably pay for him on the open market.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: relatively inexpensive and it's only one year.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle Pitts tied in for the Falcons already received that franchise tag and that I think is it.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of that, like I said, the 49ers did not tag anyone really there only options would have been like John Jennings or Eddie Peniro and I don't think that was.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: That was likely to come out, especially when you look at that number for Wider Seafers that was $27 million, which would have been the same $27 million they would have give Joanne Jennings that certainly wasn't happening.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: So anything surprised to you, surprise you there, Okshaz.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_02]: Surprising, only slightly that Kenneth Walker is gonna hit the market.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think, I don't know, like T-Leave sort of indicated that that was gonna be the case, but, um, it's still, you know, Superboy MPP, but, not, it's kind of Walker.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_02]: But, um, yeah, so I mean, that's big for Seattle.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: They were really, really like, run oriented last year.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: And like he's a good player, like you mentioned, I think he provides provided an element to that offense that Zack Scharbony doesn't provide.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: So he's probably going to miss most of the season anyway, but that's a, that's a fascinating sort of like situation for that team to count for beyond that.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think so Daniel Jones, I think the transition tag was expected.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_02]: He's still like rehabbing.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: So that's interesting.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_02]: And then the big one, I think, for the 49ers.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_02]: two two names that like I think basically even forecasted for a while will remain official in Kyle pits and George Pickins just because you know as we're going to talk about this team needs weapons on offense and those are pretty good weapons.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: Pickins in particular I think is just like they need a Y to see for one and Pickins play that level.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's frustrating in so far as
- 7:05[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't get traded for all that much last year.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_02]: You kind of wish the team was involved in that, but you know, whatever.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he kind of felt like the off-the-field stuff probably caused an issue there.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, it seemed like he got his attitude together last year with the Cowboys.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, certainly.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_02]: And like, I would say to write, like, that's a different world.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: That's a world where you think, Brandon, now you, because coming back, maybe make as much sense, because right, because you already have a big money receiver, hindsight's 2020.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: Pits, I think would have been interesting.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_02]: I think the 49ers would have signed credits to a contract, had he made it to free agency.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_02]: I like, I just, he, like, is an athletic sort of weapon.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: And they like, I think they
- 7:53[SPEAKER_02]: with Kittle getting hurt, it's definitely a priority.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_02]: But not like other than that, nothing super surprising.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: It is interesting that I think the Ravens didn't tag Tyrelyn Bomb, Linda Bomb, their center.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: And
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: He's probably like a top three center in the league, the 49ers don't spend a lot there and Linda Bonds were going to get a ton of money, but that's, he like, is a real difference maker, I would say, in free agency oftentimes doesn't have like real difference makers.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: That's the risk of free agencies will get into, but that's a name who like if they decide to like really splurge and a position they don't really spend a lot on, though they'll be a cool one, let's take a look at it.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure, those are, it was good that we didn't have this conversation before those things would down because it's possible that if we had had this conversation yesterday, that some decisions would have been made that we didn't know about.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: So that's all kind of done a dust that it means that
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's either gonna be staying with those teams or they're definitely going to free agency at this point So that's that's helpful.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: Two other things I want to talk about are actually just it's kind of one thing related to each other And that is two separate reports about two separate players who play the same position for different teams And that is something we talked about
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: like off the air back and forth when this when the original report came out and then there was another one that came out today.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: They are related to cave on tibido, a name who we mentioned on our trade pot episode and then another name that we did not mention on the trade episode because it frankly wasn't a guy who kind of was on the radar because he like we said what we talked about that episode it was very much like guys on expiring contracts kind of kind of deals that
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: or players that would be interesting in other ways, and that is Jonathan Granard, or Greenard, I'm not sure which one it is, who's an adressor for the Vikings, and it came out today that the Vikings don't necessarily want to trade him, but they're in a little bit of cap trouble, which is wild like the the salary cap having gone up and like
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: like a hundred million dollars over the last five seasons and teams are still trying to get out of this is wild to me.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: But they still owe him, I think, $19 million of the next two seasons, like we said, with Tivito, he is gonna be playing on the fifth year option next year, which I think,
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: What I was I think was like 18 or something like that something about that sort of right in the same time frame Obviously the benefit of of Grinard would be get an extra here on that because he signed for two more seasons at 19 million a piece So we talked about this briefly off air as related to Tibito, but it'd be interesting to see Desire their one of those guys seem like
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: a move.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like one should the Niners be in on that if these reports are true.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: We should also say that the report about TVIDOS said it was a day two or day three pick.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, split the difference and call it a late two.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: So, like a fourth rounder, right?
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: And nothing about what the Vikings would want for Gernard.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: But they obviously, if they're not wanting to trade him, they probably have to be blown away for something there.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, to you,
- 11:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so the tip of the one I think as we talked about off air is interesting only because if it's really like day for like day for Brown for gets you get to you like him you trade like right now.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think we were joking that we'd go to New York and bring him to Santa Clara.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: the Grinard is interesting because down year last year but really last couple of you good last couple of years it's like 12 and a half and 13 sex at that time.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I do.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: Not understatement to say good like he was proble type player would be like a difference like a difference maker on this team.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_02]: But I think
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: the Vikings are probably less likely to take a day for.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, so I don't know, right?
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the Vikings, the money is what gets really confusing here.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so far as like teams have to like cut bait with like veterans because they're like over the cap and I think the Vikings are pretty tough cap positions.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_02]: So you kind of, you maybe you get like pennies on the dollar.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think so.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: I would doubt it.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: The other question is, do the 49ers themselves want to take on 19 million a year, or whatever, like, sort of, once you remove bonuses and everything, I don't know what the cap it would be.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: That I think that's hard to answer.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we're about to go into an episode where we implore the 49ers to spend copious amounts of cash.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: But like, if you just look at like Spotrack,
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: right in their market value for edge rushers in this in pre-agency 19 million is like the second or third highest amount for someone on the market and that gets you a doff at O.A.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_02]: or Kaleo Mack.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: Kaleo Mack I don't think is leaving the chargers.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_02]: He's either going to retire or he's going to go back there.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: So like if you'd wrap like between O.A.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_02]: and
- 13:22[SPEAKER_02]: Grinard, I think you probably go with Grinard just because always sort of like one more improving Grinard has that consistency.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_02]: So like if they were going to shop in that like echelon of the market, I think the trade is definitely worth considering, but I just don't think they're looking to pay that much, just for a second ad russia and that sort of
- 13:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think that takes them out of the running for like burn art.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: Typically, I think it's a little different because he's so much younger and like an inspiring contract.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_02]: You can sort of like place this by ear.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: The same amount of money, but just for one year.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: And you can see how it goes.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: It certainly would be interesting to see it.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, especially like if you can get get him for a fourth or fifth rounder, then I think you do that in a hurry.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think with the Vikings get a little more creative, right?
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: If they really want and not to bring this up, but if they really want mac-jones, for example, then you start, okay, where had, what does that look like, maybe that's interesting.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Interestingly enough, just completely off-handed, the cordon's bow check, the Vikings top 51 cap space, which is the top 51 players in their earnings, are sitting at,
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: This is amazing, negative $44 million in cap space.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's like, you know what, the worst part is.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: That's definitely not the worst.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: They're only 31st and bleak.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_02]: So I will say, I will say the one thing.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_02]: The one thing is that I don't know, Spotrack does like Rollovers just yet.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of teeth like Rollovers or yeah, I mean, there'll be a lot of changes, I think for sure.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_02]: But not me in like captioning against or every team has to deal with them.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the Niners are sort of biting that bullet right now with Trent Williams.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_02]: and so far as like the way they structured their contract makes it such that they have to like do something about like his deal even though he's still under contract like yeah.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like you pay the price every team pays the price the Vikings paid the price they had a good year last year and you know, but you guys like you have to keep it rolling and I think like
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: To bring back to the 49ers last year, it was a similar last to last year I guess that was when they were like two years ago yeah after that season they were like all right we got to make a clap like cap clean out right and so now their books are relatively clean, but that's because they ate like I think a massive dead cap charge and that's just going to be the way it goes right like.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_02]: Every team now I think with the way they structure contracts is going to have these cycles of we're really going for it and spending a lot and then boom we're going to have a year or two where you can basically pay no one.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: The Cowboys are last, by the way, according to his postdocs list, negative 58 million.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I don't think they've factored in like changes that have happened or that are that will happen once because because because of the new newly gears not started, yet all those changes that the teams are making are not really technically in in
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: motion yet, and I imagine that will change a lot of things too, but, um, anyway, uh, speaking of, uh, spending money on players.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so we're going to talk about some external free agents.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: Um, now everybody buckle up.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: There's only like a hundred and some names here on the lit.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just kidding.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so what, uh, what I tried to do is, again, using SpotTracks list of, uh, available
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: Specifically focusing on the unrestricted fragrance, because the restricted fragrance and the E.R.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: In their exclusive rights fragrance are not really factors here.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: I tried to go through the list as best I could kind of looking in terms of expectations for what these players are going to get on the ultimate market.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: So just what they're
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: they do a pretty good job of setting up like what's their market value based on, you know, comps and all that kind of stuff and just kind of put some names out there and we can talk about them in terms of what it is that we want to.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: to do.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I just listed some some names that stand out to me.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: They're at various points throughout the list.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: And so we can just kind of talk very briefly about some of these names.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's not a very long list.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's shorter than the list of 49ers, the 49ers internal for agents.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll start there.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: And actually as we can just kind of talk about them a little bit.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: And if there are other names that you would like to add to this as we go along, or something that I missed when we're done.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: than for your footed jump in.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to try on the fly because I listed them in order as they were in market value.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to try to do like offense and defensive players.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: So you'll be surprised to know that they're a fair number of wider severs and a fair number of defensive ends slash adressors on this list.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll start there.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start with the wider severs.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: Because I think that's a good place to start.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: So I have one two three four names here of various kinds and types and we can kind of talk about them in a group.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: So the names are as follows.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: So we have Mike Evans, who's a, you know, Mike Evans.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: We have Alec Pierce, who is the name that we kind of alluded to earlier as being impacted by the choice to franchise tag, Dandel Jones, and it means that he will not be necessarily returning to Indianapolis, at least not on the franchise tag.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: So there's that.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: I have just because, you know, he kicked us in the pants too many times, and I feel like this list actually features more players who beat us, so they should now join us than I would like to admit, but there we go.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: And that's for Sheed Sheheed, and then the fourth name is a name that I've seen, seen bandied about amongst 49ers, folks, and that's Romeo Dobs,
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: my devins, and the statement, no, I think the 49ers have a lot of like kind of like situationally filling in receivers, and I think they need like an alpha, like in real number one, like someone who teams are worried to play against, and I think the only name that you mentioned is Mike Evans who fits that bill.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't be opposed to them getting my govins and maybe were a me adopt, but I think Evans is for sure the player they need to go for it because if they're not looking like servicing what it just said I think.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: They're not looking for depth in the receiver room.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think they have a lot of depth in the receiver room.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: I think that would probably be their issue last year was that you had a lot of really, really solid, but not spectacular receivers.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: And so getting players like that into the room, like raises your floor, but the floor is, I think, pretty high already.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's a competent group.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: people who don't know how to run rounds.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: But you know, like you don't have a difference maker.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not convinced that Alec Pierce justifies the sort of contract that he's going to get.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think like I'm always a little hesitant about contracts for receivers and
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: Plank all that well sometimes or not all that well like you you like you overpay a lot yeah for receivers and free agency and it's rare that it really works out it can.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_02]: But I think it works out better when you're not trying to like bring in a number one, but you have like a number like a bring in a number two and number three.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think the exceptions are like my heavens.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_02]: A tire hill also got released.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think the 49ers are gonna touch him.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna play anymore.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: Like, that name, that sort of quality receiver, I think is if you're going to spend spend there trend like maybe backfield to draft one day I'm not sure if you mentioned, but, um, who I think will be really interesting to see if he returns return it's being the opposite point is debilitating Samuel so there's been a lot of talk.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_02]: like smoke coming out of the combine that the 49ers might look to reunite with Debo.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_02]: So I'd left.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_02]: So contract aside, I don't know what Debo is going to get into market.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_02]: Honestly, I have no clue.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_02]: What do you think about Debo returning to the 49ers?
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like, obviously, I really, you know, loved the one who knew is here and thought that was
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like, it's insane to me that he's only been in these only as seven years of in the league.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it feels like it's been longer than that for some reason.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I don't know if the bridge has been burned so much as it's just like that feels like a step backwards rather than
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: move towards like trying to make the team immediately better because it's not like yet like a great season in Washington last year.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it was fine.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just turn 30 years old.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so I don't know, like it's, you know, it's 72 catches for 727
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's in, you know, 16 games, something he's not done since 2021 by the by, but, I mean, and it was a better season than he had in 2024 with 49ers, but not by a lot.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_00]: but also if you look like the year before in San Francisco is at 51 catches for six hundred and seventy yards for so we had what fifty more yards but he needed twenty almost more than twenty more catches to get there just I don't know the feels like the juice is a little bit gone out of that to me and I just feel like there might be better ways to spend ten or fifteen million dollars a season or whatever you can ask where yeah I I agree I think
- 24:28[SPEAKER_02]: if it's a like if it the number is a lot lower than I think you make you can like you bring them back see what he has but like I do agree that like at what he's asking for you I don't know if the reunion is the best idea I just think it's interesting like yeah that's a name who like theoretically maybe I don't even know if deep out fits with the 49ers do on offense any more frankly
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't think so either.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think like interesting name like a weapon in the like general sense of like you can use them in a lot of ways on offense and something I don't know.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe something different flavor, but I'm not really sure that's the direction to 49ers going more.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: As for the mic Evans and I like I'm all for for that if that's something he's interested in doing.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like he would have to be willing to accept that, I mean, he's coming from a team where he's been the number one option like without question for pretty much this whole career and there's never been anybody who's come in and been like, oh, I'm the guy now.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like even Chris Godwin is best was always the very obvious number two on that team and he's, if he's willing to come in and, you know, be like the number one wider receiver option, but maybe not the number one
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: bar none on the on the team and I think you feel comfortable that he'll be 33 in a couple of months But his game is not predicated on things that will age poorly, so I think you're okay there Bringing him in dobs and together is interesting like if you if you look at the market value on both of them I'll be like 25 million dollars a season for the pair of them which is not Like a horrible overspend and the the fact of matter is probably Evans at this point
- 26:19[SPEAKER_00]: maybe a shorter deal, right?
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like maybe two years, maybe three, depending on what he's looking for.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: But Dobbs will be 26 soon.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: So he's got a little more youth on his sides, and maybe he has a little bit of a longer deal.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to start thinking about what Rikki Piercels future is looking like on this team, but I'd be interested in that pair of guys.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: The outpairs thing, I think I'm with you.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: decent seasons before.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean his output is insane like 47 catches for a hundred for a thousand yards last year is like nuts But also that doesn't seem repeatable in this particular offense.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think would be what I would say Yeah, I agree.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: I agree And especially if that number's gonna creep
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: like up to 30 or something like that.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, no, thanks.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so let's look at the other major group.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_00]: The other major need, and that's the, the addressers, the defense vends.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: One name we already mentioned before, but I'm gonna throw out a couple of other options at different levels.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, let's just look at the defensive line altogether, just because I got one of their name on here too.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's been mentioned.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: So mentioned Henderson, who will be a free agent and is, in by many accounts, the top free agent in the class heading out.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: We have the other Bosa, Joey, who is still kicking around, was in Buffalo last year and pretty decent season.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: We boy Amafay, again, the stealing from the Seahawks will be a
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: a theme here in some ways.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then two of the names, another Edressor Malcolm Coots from the Raiders, and then defensive tackle a name that's been thrown around as an option that the Niners could go after that as John Franklin Myers, who was with the Broncos last year.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: So lots of names there, lots of different...
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: I was going for various levels of how much this would cost and depending on what it is, as you said, where are they going to splash?
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: But those are kind of like very levels of where players could come out for sure.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, um, a lot of names, I think, sort of at different stages of the market.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_02]: So it's interesting.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, so I go back and forth on this personally because I think we've seen the team do the like spray and spray essentially approach of like getting multiple people at the mid tier of the market and it was like it was fine, but it wasn't super successful.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think Leonard Floyd had a decent year before the 49ers cut him.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: and I think you took Rosemotos.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_02]: I'll not be returning at like a pretty like sizable amount when you could have packaged those together and get like actually green art or hunter.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: So personally, I lean towards like shopping higher in the market.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: Hendrickson, I think, is an interesting case though because his year wasn't phenomenal
- 29:42[SPEAKER_02]: Is he over the hill?
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's on the older side too.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he just turned 31 in December.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_03]: That's so that's a little concerning to me.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: Malcolm Prince is interesting, but I don't know if he's like a difference,
- 30:05[SPEAKER_02]: Like boy and mafia, I think is like a really exciting player to add, not just because he's a form to see hot and so he's, you know, but get him to flip side.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think there's a lot of potential there, but I'm also not sure potential is what you want to bet on.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: When it gets, so Frank, like honestly, I'm not so sure there's like someone in the market at these parties that I'd like really want to go for.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: And this is not a great way to think about it, but I also think there's an opportunity to cost here with like my co-William snaps, right?
- 30:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like every Eddler usher you have taking these snaps, it's a snap that you're like, or my first try to pick is not getting too developed.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think Williams like did anything for you to think he shouldn't get those opportunities.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_02]: I do wanna add, I may have missed this, and did you mention,
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: Big Bear Joey Boses.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_00]: I did, yeah, yeah.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's a one guy who I'm a little more like, I think he'll probably join the 49ers just because like, you want to vote with his brother?
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: And so like, that's pretty good.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not in, but like, really, I don't know.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_03]: I would say like, boy, I'm off a maybe, but honestly,
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: I would go like all the way down, you could get a reunion with Art and Key.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like there's Arnold Epiquetti, who's in Atlanta last year.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_02]: That's, I like, I don't know, I'm a little more concerned because the best addresses don't really hit the market.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: And so, but you don't need the best, but like, is this again?
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: Might as well trade for Jonathan Grinard.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_02]: I'm interested in what you're like a pro, because I feel you and I might have a different approach to this edge market.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: I like the boasts of brothers like match and out like I thought I think Joe had a solid season with Buffalo last year and I think that would be an interesting move just kind of like he's he's six months younger roughly than then try head tricks and is he I don't I don't think he's ever quite hit
- 32:35[SPEAKER_00]: the heights that Hendrickson has, Hendrickson had back-to-back seasons with 18 sacs, both a max out at 13, that was his rookie season.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a long time ago, this 2017.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_00]: Since then, since he is his end years with the Chargers, didn't play full season, his last full season with the Chargers, he had 11 sacs last year and 15 games with Buffalo, he had five.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you're not, if you're not like, I need him to be my number one option.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: Then I think a move like that where you spend like 10 to 12 on a, on a, on another boasts fine.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think a Malcolm Coon's kind of move would be in that range.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like Spotrek has him make as his market value less than 10 million.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_00]: But it all just kind of depends on what you want a guy to do and thinking about like his Bryce Huff going to be on this team next year.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you're looking to, if you're thinking and we're probably not going to keep Bryce Huff around and then you're just kind of replacing him, then maybe it's going to be like an argument key or someone that lowered down the list.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_00]: The Hendrickson thing makes me nervous because while he's had those real heights last year was kind of a down year forum for a lot of different reasons and it's not going to get any easier for him and if he's not going to pan out, I'd rather him not pan out somewhere else I guess.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: And my understanding, and this is not really a part of this conversation, but my understanding is that the edge class in this particular draft that's coming up is pretty strong.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think the better move here is to either make a trade for one of the guys that we talked about.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: Because at that point, it's a known cost and like with a tiptoe specifically, like you can pay him for a year, and then if you if things don't work out, then you didn't really lose a whole bunch.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like the edge market specifically is very, like, draft a guy or two and trade for a guy if you want a bigger impact type of player at this point.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, I think that's right.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's the way they approach it.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, add one of those lower guy.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_00]: I like bring, bring Cleo and throwback or bring Arden Keyback or bring, it's, you know, who's it?
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: A men who Charles Men who is out there again too, like you could be a guy like that who's on the back end of the cost is not going to cost you a lot and you can
- 35:36[SPEAKER_00]: add to the depth because they need both right.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_00]: They need both impact and bodies just just being frank.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, I think that's true.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so the, the one defensive tackle name that I added onto that list is the John Franklin Myers.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's a pretty sad defensive interior defensive line for agent class.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be honest, I don't know a ton about John Franklin Myers.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_00]: I just seen that his name bandied about a lot he'll be 30 and like five, six months or so.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: But it looks like like Clea Davis is not going to get a contract tender as a restricted free agent.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's going to be some rebuilding along this interior defensive line, whether or not they're going to.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: Whether or not there's anybody on this list of players that's like, oh, they need to give him money.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that's right.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_02]: John Franklin Myers to my knowledge.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's suffered some injuries, but
- 36:44[SPEAKER_02]: in his career, but it's like a pretty good player, the thing here, though, is right, like there's a real balancing act, I think this team has to take on its defensive line because they are like really lead to this youth movement for better for worse.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_02]: And it's kind of weird now,
- 37:11[SPEAKER_02]: You've now thrown your rookies into the fire.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: They've had a year.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_02]: They've learned what the NFL is like.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_02]: Now they have an off season to get better and come back.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't make a ton of sense to like block them with high price veterans who aren't like needle rulers.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_02]: And so I don't know, I do think they're gonna,
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: going to make some adjustments.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_02]: I have already wrong on our internal free agents.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: Very fun.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: Love that for myself.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he made.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:52[UNKNOWN]: That's what he made.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_02]: That's what he made.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_02]: That's what
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: high-priced defensive tackles are going to be like the move here.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_02]: I read this seems like the they die of sort of like fine players sort of in the like wrong of like Clea Davis who maybe fit what this defense is going to look like a little more.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's fair.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: Spot trick has him just a hair under $8 million a season, which for a defensive tackle is quite a bit.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's still fourth most, the highest clay, Clay's Campbell who's got to be 40 years old.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_00]: I got bless you if you give Clay Campbell, almost $11 million next year is what I gotta say.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: Good for him, but yeah.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: Not, not the move I would make.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so let's stay on the defensive side, and then we'll go back to the offense.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: I got a couple of other names.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: And that's defensive backfield.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_00]: Again, my steal from your division opponents, theme continues.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I have two safety names and a cornerback name.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: The safety is our Kobe Bryant and Camp Curl.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: And the quarterback is to recall in both expected to hit for you.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see this off season.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, we'll end in Bryant big parts of that Seattle defense that just did a thing that we don't have to talk about.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: And then Camp Curl has been, I think, an integral part of the Rams secondary, the last several seasons, anything strike you there.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, woolen is really interesting to me because like he's so up and down honestly and I mean like I mean up and down and literally how the 49ers have like picked on him and now like it just it makes like but he's like athletic long strong big guy right yeah like 6364 just the he's a prototypical Seattle cover 3 corner.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if that's what the 49ers want anymore.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if that's what anyone wants anymore.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_02]: But I think he's a talented player.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_02]: Corner is another position that I think is like stressful and free agency, and so far as there's always a glut of players, I think, who are around the same,
- 40:26[SPEAKER_02]: price point and that the outcomes are super different.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_02]: And like the last time the 49ists went into this market, they knocked it out at the park.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a triverious word, mooney word, was like play like the best corner of the NFL for periods of time on that contract.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think I also think like frankly the team kind of sucks at draft and corners.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_02]: So this is a place where I think I'd be
- 40:57[SPEAKER_02]: move in a little bit.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_02]: The question becomes, right, you're displacing Renardo Green.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_02]: Not opposed to that, right?
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, there seems to be some speculation about his name being bandied about.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: And trade speculations.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_02]: I, so like, I think with Renardo, the thing is, like it just looks like the 49ers get frustrated with him at times.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_02]: And he's a good player, but he hasn't become
- 41:25[SPEAKER_02]: I think in some of his performance.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: So it makes you wonder, like that's a position they can upgrade on.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think theometer and nor had an up and down year and sort of makes you think, okay, like maybe that's a place you can invest.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_02]: But then you've got to think about it in the alternative.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_02]: And essentially what I mean by that is that, like if you pay another corner, that's a lot of money going to like the defensive backfield.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_02]: Does that matter a ton?
- 41:51[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, like,
- 41:53[SPEAKER_02]: But I do think you have sort of this, that's like that's a position they're investing in.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I would love, if you could repeat this safety names again because my answer is very different for the safety position.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, but I want to know which guys we're inviting the children.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mentioned specifically Kobe Bryant and Cam Curl.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_00]: Kobe Bryant is expected to be the highest paid.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: actually there.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're one in three according to Spotrax market value rate, Kobe Bryant, just a little over 14 million a year, Cam Curl just a hair over 10.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: They're exactly the same age pretty much.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_00]: Curl obviously has more years of experience.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's been in the NFL for six years, Kobe Bryant just for there's so much in between Brian Cook from
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: from Kansas City and just ahead of Jekwant Brisker from Chicago.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_00]: So some interesting names there for sure.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not a betting man, but it's a lie, by the way.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: But I don't want to, I don't want to fib it.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_02]: But I think one of those four names is going to be a 49er.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not sure who exactly, right?
- 43:17[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: You think they're done swinging and missing on mid-round, safety's?
- 43:23[SPEAKER_02]: Well, so we, I think we even talked about this when we talked about where he was.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_02]: This is a position where he more scares a lot about.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_02]: And in particular, he really likes these sort of like, defensive backs who play makers, who can get into the box, who can play deep,
- 43:48[SPEAKER_02]: the teams he's on for that.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_02]: So like in Atlanta, they went in and they got Jesse based the third who was like the best safety at the time, right?
- 44:12[SPEAKER_02]: like this is we're getting that like multi-faceted player really matters for him.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_02]: And I think like that's position to 49ers have not had a ton of success with.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's an area where his defense needs talent in that position.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_02]: So
- 44:31[SPEAKER_02]: I really think they're going to invest there.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know between these four who fits his scheme exactly, what I do know from my understanding of this market is that a lot of people think Brian Cook is ascending in a way that
- 44:53[SPEAKER_02]: defensive back of work, they're pretty well.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yep, Kobe Bryant is interesting because he's switched over from corner.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_02]: Now, please, safety.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_02]: So you may be, there's a little bit more versatility there.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: Cam Curl.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the Cam Curl just from their time and Los Angeles together.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_02]: So Curl is interesting to me too because my understanding is that he might be a little more like typical box safety, type of safety.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if the 49ers wanted to pay someone.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, do that.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you can keep mounting yourself to do that if that's what you want to.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_02]: So, like, I don't want to, like, I'm not going to like, profess to know that, like, that's what Cam Coral's like.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_02]: strengths are a brisker I think is like similar in so far as Kevin buyer who's also on the market yep it plays that traditional like deep safety role so I would say like for me my vote is Brian Cook I'm okay with Kobe Bryant and okay we can't crumble okay with brisker I like but I really do think they're gonna spend here because I think the defense needs it
- 46:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I think we're he Morris wants it and I think they have the money for it and like I think this is a position and this is also a position where I don't think the contracts get to outrageous right there's the highest face like Kobe Bryant like I said is the highest paid market value and it's just like 14 under 15 million a season.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_02]: If you're like if you're a good defensive mind, you can take a safety and make him do a lot of things for it.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, like.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_02]: The Ravens with Kyle Hamilton, game changer, right, German James, Mink of Fitzpatrick, one of Fitzpatrick's healthier.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like,
- 46:41[SPEAKER_02]: Even the Seattle drafted Nickyman worry in the second round.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_02]: He was a huge deal in the game for the United States.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_02]: Right, like, you, like, chess pieces.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_02]: You want chess pieces on defense now, and I think safety is undervalued.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_02]: If you can get a guy who can be that chess piece.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it really matters what, like, schematically what they're looking for, but I do think getting a player who's a bit more like,
- 47:10[SPEAKER_02]: who can be a difference maker is important.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, I vote Brian Cook, but like, and any, if the team like feels as though one of these guys is best fit for this defense, like I think they should absolutely pull the trigger.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that's a good call.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_00]: I just like in a general sense, I think
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: If you're gonna spend on a defensive, on defensive players, I think the second area is the place to go, but I definitely think safety makes a lot of sense.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, ultimately, because like you said, the numbers just don't get too crazy with the safety.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_00]: So the cornerbacks, numbers start to get a little bit crazy and you have to think about whether or not the player that you're gonna bring in is better than what you have on the roster right now.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_00]: And that's...
- 47:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's a harder sell at corner back, but I think it's it's safety.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's pretty pretty clear this is some other things that I learned in looking through this list just this is just general takeaways.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, Jimmy Ward Jimmy Ward is going to be a free agent after a couple of years in Houston, 11 years in the league now.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: be interesting to see where he lands if he has an opportunity.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing that I found that was very interesting, Jamal Adams, still only 30 years old and only 8 years in the league.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how's that possible?
- 48:32[SPEAKER_01]: Man, man, man, man.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like, does that feel like he's been around forever?
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, that's definitely done.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: I can't be right.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_00]: I looked at, when I scroll through that, and I saw it, I was like, wait,
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: Also, you played with the Raiders last year, should I go bless them?
- 48:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, okay.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, all right.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I think we're both in agreement, like secondary improvements seem to be the place to splash some money if you're going to do it at this point, at least from a defensive point of view.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: So let's go back to the offensive side.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_00]: I got four names, three positions.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: various levels of intrigue.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'll start with one that you mentioned before and that was the tight end position.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: So the big the big name obviously would have been Kyle Pitz.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_00]: It would have been very interesting to see what
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: what Kyle Channinghand's interest in doing that would have been.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: There are some interesting games on the list of tight ends, topped with nearly just turned 36-year-old Travis Kelsey.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like, thank you.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's not going anywhere.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: If he plays again, he's going to stay in Kansas City at this point.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_00]: There's no point there.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: But the two names that I wrote down are guys that are kind of that are the next on that on that list.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that is David and Jacob and Isaiah likely.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: Two different guys, Nujoku will be 30 before the season starts likely about to start to about to turn 26.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_00]: Nujoku has been in league for eight years, which is also a little bit surprising.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_00]: So he and Jemon, and I'm in the same draft class.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not, and then likely four years in the league.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: They are, you know, about a million and a half a part in terms of expectations.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: And Joku right around 10 million.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_00]: uh... likely's uh... market value right under nine but obviously the light that see uh... the likelihood is that you're gonna have to pay i's a uh... a little bit longer than you will uh... in joku uh... there's some other names on the list like older guys like k dot and he's on an older guy but he's like just down the list a little bit further uh... but then he in a guy's like you know no offense and they're in wall or and
- 50:54[SPEAKER_00]: The, you know, guys that are probably not going to move the needle, Austin Hooper is a free agent.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_00]: Zach Ertts is a free agent.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: He'll be 30, he'll be 36 soon too.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_00]: We can make everybody's dreams while the streams come true and sign almost 36 real taste and hail.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: But this is an interesting position to me, one because we don't know what's going on with with with, uh, which we'll just kill either from a short or long term perspective, but also just because like,
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: Man, we saw that short glimpse of what this offense could look like with a double barrel tight end situation.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_00]: And even if it's just for a little bit, it would be cool to see that, anything strike you there.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard because I think the top names you mentioned are gonna get a lot of money for the tight end position.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then that's two guys are paying that much.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_02]: And that's, I think that's too much.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's a great, it's an important position,
- 51:54[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard to justify spending that much.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_02]: Austin Hooper would be funny just because I remember way back in the day.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_02]: There's discussion of the 49ers, potentially replacing, geoldum, George Kittle with Austin Hooper.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_02]: So that was a chat last from the past, but
- 52:16[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, like, I think the big name who's going to be back is conscious, really, and from there, a guy like Hooper seems more likely, right, like, if you're piecing it together, like, I don't know, like, constructing, I suppose, like, Hodgepodge, that way, when kiddo gets back, you just sort of attack that two-tightened approach more.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_02]: Well, like, I don't know.
- 52:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard, I don't like,
- 52:44[SPEAKER_02]: I really feel like the problem with two tight ends is that you have to draft the second one.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_02]: The only name that I'm seeing that I think it's interesting is no a fan, just because I think he's of off a couple like down years, but he said some pretty good years, Iowa tight-end, which I don't know, like maybe there's like a spark for him, kiddo, and like
- 53:07[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone just gets a lot better because there's an Iowa connection, but like that aside I think fans has an athleticism that a lot of titans don't and so he can be a maybe a weapon in a way.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_02]: that some of these other titans wouldn't be kind of akin to Jordan Reed, way back one.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, yep.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: You feel similar, but a little bit younger, I think, at this point.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: Fantel, not even turn 29 until November.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: Cash.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: He was a first, he was a 20th overall pick in 2019.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: And he has George Kato to thank for that.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's like his existence at Iowa after George Kittle became a big thing.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's probable that those are not disconnected.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: Hawkinson.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_02]: I want it.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_02]: Was the other guy who was the same.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe there was, there's another Iowa tight end.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_00]: There's like, I think it's Hawkinson.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_00]: I believe.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: Hold on.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_00]: This is good.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_00]: good, good radio stuff.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, TJ Hawkinson.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 2019 with Alliance.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: Also from Iowa.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: So, wow.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: What a tight end group that was.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: Fant is interesting.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that's that's an interesting name that I almost put on the list.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, wasn't a starter last year for Cincinnati, uh, but caught 34 cat balls on 41 cat 41 targets 288 yards and nothing massive.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_00]: Um, just wasn't a part of their their offense and really without Joe Burrell last year, their offense was kind of the disaster anyway.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_00]: Um, decent in Seattle.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_00]: Um, has really always been like,
- 54:57[SPEAKER_00]: in terms of really after, I mean, he had two years in Denver after his rookie season where he got like number one receiver, number one tight end.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_00]: targets but never was able to to to to get there in terms of expectations and catches like his biggest year was well 20 28 20 and 2021 662 catches 667 73 yards and 68 catches for 670 yards.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_00]: But really he's been like if you could get you know 40 40 catches 30 to 40 catches for you know.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_00]: 250 plus yards out of your number two tight ends and at least somebody else somebody on the field really like a we have to pay attention to him as opposed to you know the other guys that they've turned out there Luke Feral for example in recent years I think that would be interesting for sure yeah so you're saying it's not likely that Isaiah will be joining the 49.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_03]: you were going to pull that out either way.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_00]: Funny.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_02]: I would love if I say it likely as a 49er.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_00]: But that's that.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_00]: They're willing to spend money at that's at the tight end.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: I would do it.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: But because he's still young and very good.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, all right, so let's two more names that I got here.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_00]: One is an offensive guard, because they're losing their offensive.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_00]: One of their starting offensive linemen.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_00]: And, well, potentially both of them.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_00]: In the form of Spencer Burford slash been barched, depending on how you look at that.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't go with the top of the market, although I did see
- 56:52[SPEAKER_00]: So connections to Joel, Joel, bittonio, bittonio, from who's was with Cleveland recently.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_00]: A little bit of an older guy, 34 years old.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_00]: My option is not a ton younger than him, if I can find him on the list.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's disappeared.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_00]: Hold on.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_00]: Again, really good work here.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_00]: by me.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, there we go.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: And that's Isaac Simollum, who was with Pittsburgh most recently, again, he's a little bit younger than the Matino, like a year and a half or so.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not as expensive.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_00]: What we're talking about here is not...
- 57:37[SPEAKER_00]: couching hand going completely outside of his comfort zone and and spending a ton of money on a guard.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's they need something to like solidify that spot next to Trent Williams for a couple of seasons.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we figure out what's going on with him and it doesn't have to be like a
- 57:59[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have to go out and spend 20 million on a guy who's going to be there for a bunch of years.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you can find a short term.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know if Isaac Smollow is like the guy I need to find, but it's like he's idiomatic.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_00]: I guess of like a choice they could make to go with a capable guy at that position to like hold the fort down and while they figure out what's next.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, I am well.
- 58:27[SPEAKER_03]: So my thing is that I just, I think they should sign Joel Bittonio.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_00]: All right, well, I'm worth it.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I agree, it's, you know, it's the same kind of idea.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I totally agree with you.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_02]: I agree with the approach.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think the, like, offensive guard market in the NFL's absurd.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's absurd.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_02]: I like, it has gone to the point where I think the NFL's proven the 49ers right in a way to where
- 58:52[SPEAKER_02]: Like the difference between what people are getting out of the free agent market to what you can get like a rookie to do, like that cap saving is huge.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_02]: There are exceptions.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think Batonio is a great exception to that.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_02]: And like because of his age, you're going to get a discount on a player who otherwise like top top.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he's still going to get top billing in this market.
- 59:16[SPEAKER_02]: But like if he was 27 as opposed to like 33 right now,
- 59:22[SPEAKER_02]: He'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be, he'll be
- 59:45[SPEAKER_02]: as a 49er, but that he got a lot of money from Green Bay and did not play up to that amount, which is reasonable, like that was a hard thing for any player, like 20 million a year basically is kind of a ton of money for any football player.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_02]: Right, just like regardless of position, that is but at guard, that's such a high level that you have to be at, that like,
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_02]: But if that's the going rate, that's the going rate.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_02]: And so did the 49ers have a drop off?
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_02]: This year from last year, yeah, definitely, right?
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I think that goes without saying that left guard.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_02]: But was the drop off the same as like the $18 million they didn't spend?
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_02]: No, it wasn't in like, did they use that money effectively?
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_02]: Also, no.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_02]: But they could have, right?
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like that, I think, but I think Bill's Batonio gets you
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_02]: that like difference.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_02]: And just imagine like Trent Williams and telling you next to each other like Cricin Caffer if you check their kiddo gets back healthy for them on the left side like clearing a like I could get maybe five yards in the whole game.
- 1:01:15[SPEAKER_02]: Well, gee, thanks.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm just kidding.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's about how bad.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I would think I would get.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_02]: If you're gonna spend in this market at the guard market, I think you shop expensive, but you shop like old.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_02]: So not, it's not who he is.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_00]: David Edwards is the top of the list.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's with Buffalo last year, just a shade under 20 million is there anticipated market value for him.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's still be 29.
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_02]: No, just no way, no way.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: So the one guy, the one guy I'd give the exception to here is Tyler Lindebond, like we were talked about earlier.
- 1:01:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so center.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_00]: I was gonna ask you about that next go for it.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, sorry, I think it's an important position for the 49ers and he's like really good, like I think
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_02]: top three sentient to NFL right now, maybe the best, just a phenomenal player in like a game changing way, I think.
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_02]: Because I think like, look, the 40 manners really like Jake Brendell, but there's levels to this, and I think the center position is one that really stabilizes around him.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_02]: And so you get like a guy like Linda bomb, like that's, um, I think he could he could make a lot of
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_02]: good for this team.
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_02]: I also think that SpotTrack is just wrong about this market.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like, they're not wrong, 717 million too high as we look.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think it's too low.
- 1:02:55[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I don't know what he's worth.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that's what he's going to get.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's going to clear 20 million and this is like I read something from the athletic.
- 1:03:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think indicating as much because like he's he's one of like one of one in so far as you don't get players like this on the open market and it's about to turn 26 he's young exactly he's good he's young he plays an interesting position and there's teams
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_02]: like ascending teams where like, you know, it's not the worst place in the world to get like a future tandem going.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_02]: Like you, you wouldn't tell me that a like Tennessee, for example, wouldn't want to splurge on him and get him with cam ward or like the Patriots if they have cap to get him with Drake.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like I think like there's such universal appeal.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_02]: So if they could, I would, I would try to get him.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_02]: But I think the bidding wars just won't
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_02]: Another name, my invention, or we've, at least talked about on this podcast, tangentially, is a, well, I should bear a Tucker from the Jets.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's on the, the guard list.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, who had a, I think, torn pack or, like an injury, it's that, like, kind of took a matter commission.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_02]: He isn't interesting by low option, former first round pick.
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think it would be interesting to see how he,
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_02]: I were looking before the Niners, but like, I don't know.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a really built onio or Linda Brahm or drafts on one.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_00]: So two different directions, but yeah.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I wouldn't be against it.
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_00]: I would be, as you said, surprise if they get into the mix for Linda Bamm.
- 1:04:46[SPEAKER_00]: as awesome as it would be to have, you know, Brock Pertty, is still pretty young and in Linderbaum, paired up for the next, you know, four or five years that would be, that would be cool.
- 1:04:59[SPEAKER_00]: They've also kind of had,
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_00]: like mixed bag luck with signing free agent centers who were with previous teams and had good experience there.
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously the Western rich for a situation where it was like, oh, this is the best center in football that's out, or one of the best centers in football and here he comes.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_00]: And then he ended up being hurt a lot.
- 1:05:20[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't necessarily his fault, but so we'll see.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm definitely gonna be on board.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_00]: The other name, the last name that I'll throw at you.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_00]: is not a major one, so it just sort of happened.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't do this on purpose, I promise.
- 1:05:37[SPEAKER_00]: But that is, again, it doesn't necessarily have to be this name specifically, but just kind of like the type of player that I think they're going to be looking for in this particular market.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_00]: And that is at the running back position.
- 1:05:50[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they have a decent running back room, but we talked in the internal free agent
- 1:06:01[SPEAKER_00]: what they're going to do and I don't know I'm not going to say can't walk her.
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, even though that's where I've been going with everything else, um, there are Brian Robinson is a free agent, um, and I, when I was thinking about this, I was just thinking about like a little bit of a different type of player, a guy that they could run out there that's going to be different things, and the name that I came up with kind of kind of gain well.
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_00]: who was with Pittsburgh last year, about 1327, a little bit of a smaller quicker guy will not be a spell for Christian McAfrey necessarily and will not necessarily.
- 1:06:41[SPEAKER_00]: So he can't but you like you're back up, but he could be maybe gadgetty a little bit and maybe like you're talking about bringing Dbo back.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe this is a type of player that you bring in instead who can do probably similar things, catch the ball of the backfield, that's sort of thing, a little scape back type of guy.
- 1:06:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think you still need somebody who's gonna be your backup specifically, but maybe Jordan James is that guy or maybe they're gonna draft somebody else, but just like kind of a low price, you know, not terribly expensive, you know, a couple of million two or three million a season guy who can come in and do some different things.
- 1:07:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, um, I, I, I, everything you've said is right, and I agree with you, and it's not going to happen.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's, it's, it's not going to happen.
- 1:07:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like, this is, they're just not, I like, I would be shocked.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_02]: I would be truly shocked if they like,
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_02]: get a guy in free agency who would get snaps.
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_02]: Like I just don't think it's happening anymore.
- 1:07:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like the Christian McCaffrey, the fact that they love drafting running backs every now and then, like I just don't see them like getting involved in the market.
- 1:07:56[SPEAKER_02]: Even though gainwell, I think is a really interesting player who would add a lot of sort of, I don't know, like I'm kind of blanking on like the word I want here.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_02]: Like, flare, I don't know, like a different flavor, I suppose.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:08:14[SPEAKER_02]: So...
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_02]: On that note, I think there is one guy who, like, and this is a real health question mark, but I think if he's healthy, I, there's a chance that they, they sign in.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_02]: I could see Nasi Harris, Jr., and so when Harris was initially, could be, I think when Harris was in the draft, there were rumors of the 49ers were interested in drafting him when she was theoretically on the market,
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_02]: Pittsburgh, I think there's rumors that the 49ers can be interested in him, and like if you're you know you went at it one angle with like gain well kind of scrap back sort of value potentially grants you a sort of different.
- 1:09:03[SPEAKER_02]: You know flavor and that direction.
- 1:09:05[SPEAKER_02]: Harris is like whoa.
- 1:09:08[SPEAKER_02]: What was to the.
- 1:09:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he said.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no mess and around.
- 1:09:12[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go.
- 1:09:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right through you.
- 1:09:14[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so, you know, like, little like what Brian Robinson could have been, um, I probably was juicing a step, which is already saying something, but um, well, considering he's he's coming off the Achilles injury, but he's a guy, I think the, like, Kyle Shena really likes, but beyond that, I just,
- 1:09:36[SPEAKER_02]: I like the one, the one running back who I think is joining this team, it's hurt or coming out of it.
- 1:09:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:09:46[SPEAKER_02]: Well, so I was going to say Patrick Taylor, like Patrick Taylor or like, I would expect a reunion over someone new.
- 1:09:55[SPEAKER_02]: So whether that's where you're most hurt, maybe like, that's pretty retired otherwise you know.
- 1:10:01[SPEAKER_02]: I would say Matt Brida like way like Solvon Ahmed was a former 49er like you'd say yeah like I just I I would really I hope I'm wrong very I would be very shocked yeah if it's if they get anyone look I noticed
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: It was great, well, a lot of lots of.
- 1:10:32[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, cool, so that's pretty much it.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_00]: So those are some names.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, I think we covered pretty much all, I mean, there are a bunch of other names, and I'm sure those surprises with some things that will be happening.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_00]: That will be happening in the coming day.
- 1:10:54[SPEAKER_00]: I was just
- 1:10:57[SPEAKER_00]: very briefly trying to pull up what's the the important dates to know so the franchise tag deadline has already passed March 9th which is a week from now is when the the the contact period.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_00]: We don't like the legal tampering.
- 1:11:14[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't make any sense.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Those two things are contradictory phrases.
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_00]: But they can start meeting with players.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_00]: They can't sign anything.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_00]: But they can start meeting with players from March 9 to 11.
- 1:11:27[SPEAKER_00]: March 11th at 4pm.
- 1:11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Eastern is when the newly gear starts.
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_00]: So everybody will be a free agent at that particular point and things can start being signed so that is You know, we can have for so a way kind of crazy to think, but I guess I chose any Final thoughts on free agency before we wrap this one up and send it off into the universe Yeah, well
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_02]: I want to like, there was, it was a very sort of disparate conversation and I think part of that is just like, you know, this is the way we approach this podcast.
- 1:12:07[SPEAKER_02]: But I think, but, but I, I do actually think there's a little, there's something to be said about that because I really think this team is quite good in a lot of ways, right?
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_02]: Like, because it was the third place team in its division and
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_02]: the two teams that placed ahead of it were like in the successively further rounds than it was in, there's this feeling of like, wow, they're not like close.
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_02]: But like their talented team, but I think that feeling comes from the fact that there are positions on this team that just feel devoid of difference makers.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_02]: And like important positions too, right?
- 1:12:51[SPEAKER_02]: at Russia without Nick Bosa you really like feel that bite and we saw that last year in the defensive backfield right like it just feels like they need someone to like make a play it there.
- 1:13:03[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone on the defensive line, another offensive line, maybe a tight end, maybe a receiver like it feels like a lot.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's a lot of like positions where you're like wow.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_02]: But
- 1:13:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think what I feel to be the case, and hopefully the team will approach it this way, I'm not so sure they will.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that roster is like pretty good at a lot of these positions you mentioned.
- 1:13:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's not great at it.
- 1:13:32[SPEAKER_02]: And I think the risk of free agency generally is that you get good players at great player contracts,
- 1:13:43[SPEAKER_02]: and it's always a disappointment.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_02]: And that you have to be really judicious about like the way you, it has to be really targeted.
- 1:13:52[SPEAKER_02]: Teams that just spend a lot, it's never gonna work out that way.
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_02]: And like, I mean, the bears just this like today, right, the center they signliness, let's hear Drew Dalman, who we mentioned on our like free agency preview podcast last year, it's like, oh, the 49ers have to get him.
- 1:14:07[SPEAKER_02]: They really should get him.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_02]: he's just retired like for agencies weird he was a great player hopefully everything is okay that great career would have been a great 49er for this year like
- 1:14:22[SPEAKER_02]: You get a lot of different players and you can change the complexity of your team, but what you don't want is you don't want players who have these hefty salary tags who aren't moving the needle for you.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_02]: And what I think that does and free agency in particular, it like if you can take and for those of you who are listening to this podcast, who know how Minecraft work.
- 1:14:46[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to throw this out there it's like you take an axe and you chop off the middle block of a tree in the top and bottom block are still there like don't even look at that middle part because that's where like That's where you're going to get hurt.
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to get hurt there because or like that is the most boomer bust area free agency and I think this team has like struck out a lot of times there
- 1:15:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that's all really well said.
- 1:15:12[SPEAKER_00]: And so we'll leave it at that.
- 1:15:17[SPEAKER_00]: They need to make some changes.
- 1:15:19[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see how they come.
- 1:15:20[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get into the end of this.
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_00]: By the time we record next, it will be probably right after free agency.
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see how things went.
- 1:15:32[SPEAKER_00]: But until then, we want to say thanks to you for listening to this episode of the 9 or noise podcast.
