- 0:40call myself a muscle mommy. Not that nobody else can because
- 0:43they can. So fitness has been something
- 0:45that's been a part of my life for a long time, even though
- 0:47I've started and stopped as many times as I can count.

- 1:56courses. So let's get into today's
- 1:58episode. In today's episode, I'm going to
- 2:00be talking about what the difference between the good ol
- 2:04average tech versus a strong tech.
- 2:06Now there is a difference between both of these and I know
- 2:09this episode is probably going to be a little triggering for
- 2:12some people, but stick with me here because there is a
- 2:16difference and I'm going to give you some tips to improve on how
- 2:19you can be a stronger tech. Now there is a difference
- 2:22between the average tech and a strong tech.
- 2:25So the difference between that is, is when you have just the
- 2:29average tech, they kind of do like the bare minimum.
- 2:33I'm going to use a really bad example.
- 2:35It's kind of like a man or woman in a relationship where they
- 2:38just do the bare minimum shit and you put up with it.
- 2:41OK, so that's no dig to anybody, but that's the best example that
- 2:45my brain can come up with is you just have a technologist that is
- 2:49there. They'll do the minimum.
- 2:51They know their way around some things, but they don't take the
- 2:54initiative to get more education, improve their skill
- 2:59set in learning something new. So they kind of say average,
- 3:02which we see a lot of that OK versus a strong tech.
- 3:06The tech you can depend on the tech that when shit goes wrong,
- 3:10that's who you want by your side to make sure that they run that
- 3:13code with you, that if something happens to the patient, they
- 3:16know exactly how to handle the situation and help you out.
- 3:20The tech that is strong with their skill set and says, and
- 3:23you have a question, say, hey, I'm not sure about this protocol
- 3:26and you guys go over it together.
- 3:29The tech that helps you out when you've missed 2 Ivs and they
- 3:33come in boom, it's engaged in the right AC.
- 3:36The tech that as far as they can, who they can contact and
- 3:40who they can call when shit goes wrong or if the floral is not
- 3:44working on ACT machine for a biopsy, they know exactly how to
- 3:48fix it. So you kind of get my point as
- 3:50far as what's a strong tech versus a average tech, OK,
- 3:54Because there's clearly a difference in both of those, OK?
- 3:58So one of the things that I can point out as far as an average
- 4:02tech is, you know, they tend to try to memorize things.
- 4:05We know NCT, we can't memorize everything, OK?
- 4:09They just memorize. They really don't understand
- 4:11what is going on. They react to things, OK?
- 4:14They hesitate. So that's why I say they do the
- 4:17bare minimum, you know, when it comes to their skill set, kind
- 4:20of like a man who does bare minimum in a relationship or a
- 4:23woman that does bare bare minimum in a relationship.
- 4:26OK, I know that's really bad examples, but that's you kind of
- 4:30get my point where I'm going with this.
- 4:32OK, so how do we create a strong tech?
- 4:37So how do we do this? We make sure that you understand
- 4:40what's going on, make sure you understand your protocols, make
- 4:43sure you understand the whys, make sure you understand how to
- 4:46adjust or how to fix something or prevent a mistake.
- 4:50And then instead of reacting, they anticipate, OK, if this
- 4:54patient's going to be combative, what can I do to keep them calm?
- 4:57Or if the patient is not understanding that, what can I
- 5:00do to help them out to explain the exam better?
- 5:03And then a strong tech is going to make quick decisions.
- 5:06OK, so if a patient looks like they are going to possibly throw
- 5:11up, they're going to react. Make sure they've got that you
- 5:14know emesis bag for them or if you know the is not functioning
- 5:18properly, they're either going to restart it or get the nurse
- 5:21to help them out. So there's a lot of quick
- 5:23thinking that goes when you are a strong tech.
- 5:26Okay, so they think on their feet, but being a strong
- 5:30technologist doesn't come overnight.
- 5:32It takes practice and lots of repetition in just really
- 5:37improving your skill sets and continuous learning to become a
- 5:41very strong tech. OK, now a lot of techs tend to
- 5:44stay average by choice. Their choice, OK, And so they
- 5:48feel stuck in just being average, but they want to
- 5:52improve, but they don't know how.
- 5:55There's lots of ways that you can improve, you know,
- 5:57continuing education. We have to make sure that we do
- 6:00that, you know, every two years, never stop learning your skill
- 6:03set because there's lots of new things that come out every
- 6:06single day, or should I say every single year.
- 6:08As far as when it comes to CT, you know, ASRT has really good
- 6:12direct readings where you can, you know, read different things
- 6:15on diagnosis, you know, really learning, you know, your
- 6:18pathology to be a lot stronger when you see something and you
- 6:22have to kind of alert the radiologist and say, hey, this
- 6:25looks like it may be positive. So honing in on that skill set,
- 6:29you know, and going to seminars, you know, there's all kinds of
- 6:32things online. You know, CT is us, they always
- 6:35do all kinds of seminars and things like that.
- 6:37MTMI does seminars so you can actually get involved or even
- 6:42your society in your state get involved because they do a lot
- 6:45of continuing education and even improving your skill set while
- 6:50you're there asking questions, writing things down, you know,
- 6:53learning your protocols. I have an excellent reference in
- 6:57a pocketbook that you can, you know, kind of get you started,
- 7:01you know, for your CT training, it's available in the show
- 7:04notes. So you don't need more time, you
- 7:07know, to say, okay, I'm going to hesitate, I'm going to react.
- 7:10You don't need more time to do those things.
- 7:12You just need better thinking and better thinking skills and
- 7:16to make sure that you can make quick decisions and you
- 7:18understand what you're doing on on that floor.
- 7:21OK, so like I said, there's a difference between an average
- 7:24tech and a strong tech. You want to be a strong tech.
- 7:26You got to invest in yourself, guys.
- 7:28That is the whole point. You want to be the best
- 7:31successful technologist you can to execute better care to the
- 7:34patients, OK? Because the patients, when
- 7:37they're with us, even though it's for a short time, their
- 7:40life is in our hands because at any time something can go wrong.
- 7:43OK? So you want to be that strong
- 7:45technologist that knows what they're doing in the room, not
- 7:48just behind the console, OK. And you know how to go ahead and
- 7:53act quick in case something happens to the patient or
- 7:56something happens during an exam.
- 7:58So you have to, you know, have quick decision making and make
- 8:03sure that you understand exactly how you're going to execute that
- 8:06exam. OK, so that is all for today's
- 8:09episode. I like to make my episodes nice
- 8:12and short and bite sized so I can give you as much information
