- 0:21Speaker 2: It's Leggy, we yet ye on Altitude Sports Radio five.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Jet legwelld time here on a Monday his appearance brought
- 0:33Speaker 2: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW
- 0:36Speaker 2: Local sixty eight. Start with the job and with a career.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We're gonna talk to Jeff about his new job for
- 0:43Speaker 2: this week, coming up a little bit later in the conversation. Uh,
- 0:46Speaker 2: but we start with the Broncos, and and we start
- 0:50Speaker 2: in this place right here, Jeff after free agency and
- 0:56Speaker 2: what they did, adding Insidelnebacker, adding safety, adding tight end.
- 1:03Speaker 2: In what ways, if at all, will that influence the
- 1:06Speaker 2: way the Broncos approached the first couple of rounds of
- 1:08Speaker 2: the draft.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Well, Nate, I think it.
- 1:11Speaker 4: The first thing it does is it tells you where
- 1:14Speaker 4: they believe their biggest needs are, because that's been their philosophy,
- 1:20Speaker 4: and free agency was to you know, attack biggest needs
- 1:27Speaker 4: the most focused way you can, which is free agency.
- 1:30Speaker 4: You're not dependent on how the board falls. It's who
- 1:34Speaker 4: you like for you and can you make the number
- 1:38Speaker 4: you know, get the players attention. That's that's all you're
- 1:42Speaker 4: really looking at. So that tells you they really came
- 1:44Speaker 4: away from their meetings after the season as good as
- 1:49Speaker 4: their defense was, that's.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Where they wanted to go. And I did.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I do think they you know, I think ingram is
- 1:57Speaker 4: a is a big upgrade for offense. You know, if
- 2:00Speaker 4: he even gives them, you know, seventy eighty percent of
- 2:04Speaker 4: his best season over the last four years, he'll still
- 2:07Speaker 4: be the best guy they've had at tight end for
- 2:10Speaker 4: quite some time. So and you know, the other two guys,
- 2:13Speaker 4: it's just health. If they're healthy. You know, I know
- 2:16Speaker 4: for a fact the Niners loved both those guys, and
- 2:21Speaker 4: it was just a money health issue. And I think
- 2:25Speaker 4: they're whether the Niners would admit it or not, I
- 2:28Speaker 4: think they're inkling inside their own building, is that green
- 2:32Speaker 4: Law is.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Gonna come back very healthy and have a very good season.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Jeff, would we talk about teams really trying to fill
- 2:42Speaker 2: specific holes like you talked about right there. And look,
- 2:45Speaker 2: it's always mock draft season. There's a new one every
- 2:47Speaker 2: single week, three and sixty five days a year, all right.
- 2:51Speaker 2: But also like prior to free agency, most every mock
- 2:54Speaker 2: had Denver going either tight end or running back. Click
- 2:56Speaker 2: very specifically, they got to fill the joker thing. And
- 2:58Speaker 2: then the Broncos immediately go out and they sign Evan Ingram.
- 3:03Speaker 2: When NFL teams approach these things, do they view like
- 3:07Speaker 2: you're talking about filling specific needs? They view free agency
- 3:11Speaker 2: is the best way to be able to do that specifically,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I would think because these are established NFL players whose
- 3:20Speaker 2: role you know who they're just they're plug and play guys.
- 3:23Speaker 2: You put them in their lineup, you're confident what their
- 3:25Speaker 2: production is going to be, versus draft picks, where there's
- 3:29Speaker 2: always the potential of project.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Well, yeah, so.
- 3:33Speaker 4: It's just your ability to see that player in plays
- 3:40Speaker 4: you run in specific things you do, right, you get
- 3:43Speaker 4: the best vision of that. You know, you know what
- 3:48Speaker 4: you're getting. Now, do you do you get a free
- 3:51Speaker 4: agent's best season of his career? Not usually, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 4: not very often?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Well, no, but you get it. You get them coming
- 3:59Speaker 2: off of the best season of their career. In the
- 4:01Speaker 2: Broncos case, because they got injured dudes. But yeah, oftentimes
- 4:05Speaker 2: you might have gotten an inflated version of a guy,
- 4:08Speaker 2: but you.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Know, you know that it's very easy for them to
- 4:12Speaker 4: see the fit. You know, in fact, you're often going
- 4:15Speaker 4: to have somebody on your staff who coached the guy,
- 4:17Speaker 4: who you know has done something with the player along
- 4:21Speaker 4: the way, whether it's offseason or in season.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So just a lot more information.
- 4:27Speaker 4: You know that your your inability to build your team
- 4:30Speaker 4: that way though, is you know those the more players
- 4:34Speaker 4: you have excelling on rookie deals, the more you can
- 4:38Speaker 4: do in free agency. So it's really that weird dichotomy
- 4:43Speaker 4: of the better you do in the draft, the more
- 4:46Speaker 4: you can do in free agency, and that's I think
- 4:48Speaker 4: that's what teams struggle with.
- 4:50Speaker 1: All Right, Jeff, we've hit the quiet period.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Do you think you told us some great information that
- 4:54Speaker 5: a lot of people had talked about Friday? They're already
- 4:56Speaker 5: kind of tight with the cap. Do you think they're
- 4:58Speaker 5: done for this round of agency or do you think
- 5:00Speaker 5: there could be another little surprise value signing or two
- 5:04Speaker 5: before you hit the draft?
- 5:06Speaker 4: You know, now it's just players deciding what's best for
- 5:08Speaker 4: them to get back in the market next year. You
- 5:11Speaker 4: know you're and you see so many one year deals now,
- 5:14Speaker 4: like I say, after that two day negotiating window is over.
- 5:19Speaker 4: If you're unsigned, for the most part, unless you're a quarterback,
- 5:24Speaker 4: you're looking at one year deals for the team's number.
- 5:29Speaker 4: So it's mostly now players trying to decide, Okay, what
- 5:33Speaker 4: what gets me to free agency the best next year?
- 5:36Speaker 4: Or if you're an older guy, where can I win?
- 5:40Speaker 4: You know right now, that's that's what you're waiting on.
- 5:42Speaker 4: You're trying to you're hoping, Uh, those people call you.
- 5:47Speaker 4: You know, we I know, we get so enamored with
- 5:49Speaker 4: free agency, but you know it's open until you know,
- 5:53Speaker 4: the training camp starts right you know, essentially, so you
- 5:56Speaker 4: know that there'll be looking the whole time. I bet
- 6:00Speaker 4: you they bring in double digit players during OTAs and
- 6:05Speaker 4: you know the rookie minni camp, we'll see some extra
- 6:07Speaker 4: guys out there. They don't they'll keep looking. But to
- 6:12Speaker 4: have a to have the room to do something significant,
- 6:15Speaker 4: they'd have to adjust a deal or read or give
- 6:18Speaker 4: somebody an extension, or or do something turn signing bonus
- 6:23Speaker 4: or salary into signing bonus. They'd have to do something
- 6:26Speaker 4: significant to get some room. They're they're in those single
- 6:29Speaker 4: digit millions, you know, against the cap right now, which
- 6:32Speaker 4: is with the draft coming up, and you know that's
- 6:36Speaker 4: that's about as close as you want to be.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Jeff Legwold of ESPN joins us on the ramos Law
- 6:41Speaker 2: hotline car accident. You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Is it ramos Law dot com? Jeff, The cupro day
- 6:47Speaker 2: is going to be televised. That's going to be an
- 6:50Speaker 2: awful lot of fun. Uh Shador Sanders has become a
- 6:53Speaker 2: very polarizing prospect. Surprise, surprise, somebody from that family is polarizing.
- 6:59Speaker 2: What is what should do or need to show at
- 7:02Speaker 2: Colorado's pro day? And right now, what are you hearing
- 7:07Speaker 2: as the reasons for his quote unquote slide down the board?
- 7:12Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 7:12Speaker 4: You know, you know, I'm the wrong guy to ask
- 7:16Speaker 4: about you know, is a player too confident?
- 7:19Speaker 3: I just don't buy any of that bogus crap.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I want my quarterback to be confident.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you know, what's he supposed to say? Oh,
- 7:27Speaker 4: I'm not very good? You know that this fake humility
- 7:30Speaker 4: crap is. I get so tired of old people being
- 7:34Speaker 4: upset that young people are confident and young. You know,
- 7:38Speaker 4: you know, Okay, we're old. We're sorry. You know, they're young.
- 7:42Speaker 4: They can't help it, you know, they're young. You know,
- 7:44Speaker 4: let them be young. But anyway, that's a tirade for
- 7:48Speaker 4: another day, when you've got to when you've got a
- 7:50Speaker 4: whole hour for me. But uh, you know, I you know,
- 7:54Speaker 4: part of the issue is just basic football things. He's
- 7:58Speaker 4: not the biggest guy. You know, he's six a little
- 8:01Speaker 4: over six' one two twelve. I believe at the combine
- 8:05Speaker 4: that's not a big quarterback. So that's some people's trouble
- 8:09Speaker 4: with him. Look, he does a couple things at an
- 8:13Speaker 4: elite level that NFL coaches love. He's an amazing processor.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Uh he knows what he's looking at. He's been trained well,
- 8:24Speaker 4: and accuracy is spectacular. So that's an NFL quarterback and
- 8:31Speaker 4: a first rounder in my mind.
- 8:34Speaker 3: You know, is he the number one pick or all that?
- 8:36Speaker 3: I don't.
- 8:37Speaker 4: You know, I don't care about all that. I just
- 8:40Speaker 4: he's a good quarterback. He's a very good NFL prospect.
- 8:43Speaker 4: I don't care where he would fit in last year's
- 8:45Speaker 4: class and all that stuff doesn't matter to me. But
- 8:50Speaker 4: he processes great, he's accurate as health and in the
- 8:55Speaker 4: big moments he plays his best. And especially not this
- 9:00Speaker 4: past season, but his first season in Colorado. I mean,
- 9:03Speaker 4: come on, he he did more with less there than
- 9:08Speaker 4: a lot of guys could have.
- 9:10Speaker 3: He takes too many sacks, way too many.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Like he won't last half a season in the NFL
- 9:17Speaker 4: if he doesn't clean that up.
- 9:19Speaker 3: So at his pro day, people are just gonna look
- 9:22Speaker 3: for his rhythm.
- 9:23Speaker 4: How do you throw the ball in your back foot,
- 9:25Speaker 4: hits you know, how's your footwork coming out from under center,
- 9:29Speaker 4: how does it look moving left to right out of
- 9:31Speaker 4: the gun. All of those things, just little basic things
- 9:35Speaker 4: you know they can't see.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Are you going to be more responsible about taking sacks.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Because you know nobody's going to be rushing him, but
- 9:43Speaker 4: they can see his rhythm and his footwork and what
- 9:46Speaker 4: he's been doing.
- 9:47Speaker 3: But I my personal opinion is a lot of the criticisms.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Is just you know, if you want to be mad
- 9:54Speaker 4: at his dad, just be mad at his dad.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Don't take it out on him.
- 9:59Speaker 2: He's a high eye Q player. You mentioned the processor
- 10:02Speaker 2: right there. Clearly, tools wise, he's probably lower on the list,
- 10:08Speaker 2: and we know that but Leggy.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and Nate, I didn't want to interrupt you, but yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 4: he's not. He's he's not big enough to play the
- 10:17Speaker 4: way Ben Roethlis play.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Sure, so he can't take that many hits in the NF.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Cannot play that way in the NFL. Ben could, Yeah
- 10:25Speaker 4: he can. If he takes fifty sacks in the NFL,
- 10:28Speaker 4: he won't make it.
- 10:28Speaker 3: To the season.
- 10:29Speaker 1: He's not Josh Allen. That's that's very clear.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So in the and I mean this was door, but
- 10:35Speaker 2: I mean this with every prospect, maybe just broadly generally
- 10:38Speaker 2: tools versus football IQ slash processor. When evaluating a quarterback,
- 10:45Speaker 2: does it come down to taste or does one truly
- 10:48Speaker 2: make for a better future NFL player?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Well, the athlete who doesn't understand what he's looking at
- 10:56Speaker 4: and can't get the ball where he's supposed to is
- 10:59Speaker 4: not going to fare as well as the processor will. Now,
- 11:03Speaker 4: will the processor make you the throw in the last
- 11:07Speaker 4: thirty seconds of a playoff game? That's the that's your
- 11:11Speaker 4: that's your rub. You know, some people can't throw the
- 11:16Speaker 4: way John Elway did when the game's on the line.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I mean, the the touchdown at the end of the drive.
- 11:22Speaker 4: He might have killed the receiver, you know, with the ball.
- 11:25Speaker 4: It's you know, that part of it, that's the rub.
- 11:29Speaker 4: You know, the processor will be a better player overall
- 11:33Speaker 4: for his career.
- 11:35Speaker 3: But will he win you the game when you need
- 11:38Speaker 3: him to win you the game?
- 11:41Speaker 5: Jeff, I I've known you a long time. I don't
- 11:43Speaker 5: think I've ever heard anything affect your voice the way
- 11:45Speaker 5: this thing is the last couple of games.
- 11:48Speaker 3: You know, it's I told you earlier, this is my
- 11:51Speaker 3: draft voice.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I'm on the phone like fifty hours a day, and
- 11:55Speaker 4: it's just stupid, and you know, it just happens. I
- 11:59Speaker 4: don't have a great voice to begin with, So I
- 12:01Speaker 4: apologize to everyone that you know from the jump.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I beg to differ personally.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Everybody loves the smooth, velvety tones of Jeff Lagwall.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Hey, who's the other guy that's most hunter and shoud er?
- 12:13Speaker 5: We know who's maybe the surprise prospect up there at
- 12:15Speaker 5: see you?
- 12:17Speaker 4: You know, I think people are are really liking Horn,
- 12:21Speaker 4: you know, as a receiver, just the way he pops
- 12:25Speaker 4: in and out of routes and his explosiveness at the
- 12:27Speaker 4: top of the route. I think he's getting a lot
- 12:29Speaker 4: of traction for Uh, for a lot of folks. You know,
- 12:33Speaker 4: when I when I do ask scouts about their other guys,
- 12:37Speaker 4: his name comes up an awful lot.
- 12:39Speaker 2: All right, Jeff, you're gonna be out covering college buckets
- 12:42Speaker 2: all weekend long. You are moonlighting as a college basketball
- 12:46Speaker 2: writer right now.
- 12:47Speaker 3: We got this annual, my annual moonlight that's right.
- 12:50Speaker 2: So we've got we got this great bracket contest, which,
- 12:53Speaker 2: by the way, it gives it gives more points for
- 12:55Speaker 2: picking lower seeds in this tournament. You're gonna see uh
- 12:59Speaker 2: coming up on Thursday out of ball RENI. You're gonna
- 13:01Speaker 2: see four double digit seeds in Montana, champions of the
- 13:05Speaker 2: Big Sky uh Vcus coming to town. They're always fun
- 13:08Speaker 2: my safety school Yale. And then you see San Diego,
- 13:11Speaker 2: the champions of the Big West. Of the double digit
- 13:16Speaker 2: seeds that you will see coming up here on Thursday.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Is there one that you like to pull the upset
- 13:22Speaker 2: because somebody is going to.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Well, I mean San Diego is uh, They're they're like
- 13:31Speaker 4: awesome on defense. Yeah, I mean they got like one
- 13:33Speaker 4: of the best defenders in the country. As I study
- 13:36Speaker 4: all this, so I always give that a shot in
- 13:39Speaker 4: the tournament, you know, because if a team like that
- 13:43Speaker 4: hits any shots at all, they may they make it
- 13:45Speaker 4: hard on you.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And you know, you know how these things work.
- 13:49Speaker 4: If you get you get that into the second half
- 13:52Speaker 4: and really tightens the squeeze on the higher seeds. So
- 13:56Speaker 4: I always look for the best defensive teams uh in
- 14:00Speaker 4: the upset specials, and I think they're probably the best
- 14:04Speaker 4: defensive team of the double digit seeds coming.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Here, all right.
- 14:07Speaker 2: The Tritons of UC San Diego thirty six by Ken Palm,
- 14:12Speaker 2: thirtieth in defensive rating by Ken Pom, which is really
- 14:15Speaker 2: good for a program out of the Big West.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Leggie says, if you're looking.
- 14:19Speaker 2: For it for a high seed in Denver, maybe look
- 14:22Speaker 2: for them to knock off Michigan.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Their guy led then the nation had steals.
- 14:28Speaker 3: But great, yeah, Hayden great, he led the nation and steals.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Okay, and obviously pick Illinois to win the national championship.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Jeff Legwold, everybody of ESPN, Leggy, good work as always, man.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Thanks both. Let's see it all right.
- 14:40Speaker 2: There he goes Jeff Legwold battling his way through today,
- 14:43Speaker 2: plain hurt, which is what you need at this time
- 14:45Speaker 2: of year.
