- 0:01Tyler Johnson: Hey, everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics, and today we're talking magic together. No, I'm just kidding. Across the interwebs.
- 0:17Tyler Johnson: Is Tad and Phil… hey, fellas!
- 0:20Phil: Good.
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: Hey!
- 0:22Tyler Johnson: Just before we got on here…
- 0:24Tad Eggleston: Eddie says, don't forget me.
- 0:25Phil: you.
- 0:26Tyler Johnson: And Eddie. Just before we got on, I was going off on how Magic is doing in my store, so Dad was patiently waiting to hit the record.
- 0:35Phil: I mean, you know, it's good… I think with how much magic you're dealing these days, you might be the wizard on the podcast, you know, more so than anyone else.
- 0:46Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah. I don't play it, though. I mean, I do know how to play. I do know how to play. But the people that we come in… that come in for… we have several games running a week. And the people that come in to play are well, well, well beyond my skill set.
- 1:03Phil: You know.
- 1:04Tyler Johnson: So luckily, Lucas, my partner, is also very good and very competitive, so he… he's great about
- 1:11Tyler Johnson: Catering to those people who are are good at the game, you know.
- 1:15Phil: Nice, yeah. I hope that, they, are good patrons of the store, you know, because… Yeah. I mean, I've, I've… I could tell some tall tales about, not great Magic players at frequent stores.
- 1:29Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah. There's a definite stereotype of what a magic, you know, the stereotypical magic.
- 1:34Phil: Yeah!
- 1:36Phil: Okay.
- 1:36Tyler Johnson: Anyway, I'm not complaining, because like I said, bills are getting paid. But guys, this is pretty exciting for me, though, because this is, like.
- 1:45Tyler Johnson: the cusp. This is the verge of… I do have a paying job right at the theater, but this is… this is the cusp of making it a real full-time…
- 1:54Tyler Johnson: Career for myself and my partner, you know, so…
- 1:58Phil: Fantastic.
- 1:59Tyler Johnson: I… I don't know. I'm suspecting in the next year that that'll be all I'm doing.
- 2:04Phil: Wow.
- 2:05Tyler Johnson: I'm guessing, because it's been a year right now. We opened October 25th.
- 2:10Phil: Oh, okay, yeah. Coming up. Yeah. Coming up.
- 2:14Tyler Johnson: Yep. All right.
- 2:15Tyler Johnson: News of note, Tad.
- 2:17Tad Eggleston: Well, first, the New York Public Library put out their annual list of best comics.
- 2:23Tyler Johnson: It's.
- 2:24Tad Eggleston: Great, great list.
- 2:25Tyler Johnson: When you sent that, I was like, this is, like, awesome. I'm like, I have these.
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: I totally recommend that people go through and read this list. I'm both
- 2:35Tad Eggleston: dismayed and excited that I have only read 8 of them and own 8 more.
- 2:43Phil: Wow.
- 2:44Tad Eggleston: Which means that, that there's 42 more books to explore, and, and…
- 2:50Phil: Are you saying that's a year worth of great responsibilities lined up for us?
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: I mean, it could be if we really wanted to. I don't know, I don't know if that's really the way to treat the list, because we'll be, like.
- 3:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but, but, yeah, it means 42 more books to explore, you know, 34 more to… to possibly track down.
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: One way or another to read.
- 3:18Phil: Oh.
- 3:20Tad Eggleston: And, and again, just based on, on the ones that I know, just awesome. The one that I want to call out specifically, because I am…
- 3:33Tad Eggleston: So happy to see it on the list.
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: And…
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: frankly, a little surprised to see it on the list, because it flew under so many radars. One of my favorite books of the year, Orla, from John Lee.
- 3:50Phil: spend.
- 3:50Tad Eggleston: Sally can't.
- 3:51Tyler Johnson: You guys, it was so… I bought it in issues, it was great.
- 3:55Tad Eggleston: I did too. Yeah. Such, such a great book, so… so happy to see it get.
- 4:03Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think it's one of only 3 books on the list that were originally in issues.
- 4:11Phil: Oh, wow.
- 4:11Tyler Johnson: Yes, I… not too many.
- 4:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the other ones being Tate Bromble and Jacob Phillips, Everything Dead and Dying. Yep. And.
- 4:21Tad Eggleston: Matt and Mark, Elijah Rosenberg, and Francesco Sagala, and Annie McDonald's, if destruction be our lot. So, like, that's…
- 4:32Phil: It's a tough racket out there, you know?
- 4:33Tad Eggleston: That's a high, high… You know,
- 4:38Tad Eggleston: Other books are… I'll toss out the 8 that I've read, because I know that I've talked about them all, and so some…
- 4:46Tad Eggleston: way or another, all the living from Roman Murdov.
- 4:50Tad Eggleston: Bimbo Agitprop from Raquel Jack, not only have read it, what we, we
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: I talked to her on… on 22 panels.
- 4:59Tad Eggleston: The Dissidents from Derf Beckderf, again, we talked to him on 22 Panels as well. Everything Dead and Dying from Tate Bromble and Jacob Phillips. Forever from Ryan Box Brown, who we've talked to on 22 Panels, but not about forever.
- 5:14Tad Eggleston: If destruction be our lot. Again, we've talked to Matthew Rosenberg on 22 Panels, not about that book.
- 5:20Tad Eggleston: Which is, like, just reason to have him back.
- 5:27Tad Eggleston: Orla from John Lee's and Sally Cannarino.
- 5:32Tad Eggleston: And the tin can… oh, I guess this one was issues, too. Tin Can Society.
- 5:35Tyler Johnson: Pink cameras, yo.
- 5:36Phil: No.
- 5:37Tad Eggleston: Francesco Mobili. Okay. The ones that.
- 5:40Tyler Johnson: I haven't read that, but the trade is next to my bed, so that counts.
- 5:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 5:46Tyler Johnson: but.
- 5:46Tad Eggleston: That was good.
- 5:47Tyler Johnson: It was good? Okay.
- 5:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:50Tad Eggleston: I was definitely a fan. Hold on a second, I thought…
- 5:57Phil: Which I gotta say, the ones that I…
- 5:59Tad Eggleston: Somebody else's list.
- 6:00Phil: Jumped out at me on that list that, I was excited by Billy Bat, you know, I've…
- 6:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's one of the ones that I have.
- 6:07Tyler Johnson: That was good.
- 6:08Tad Eggleston: half, but haven't.
- 6:09Phil: I remember… I remember being slightly intrigued by Animan, by, Anukra.
- 6:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that book cover is so funny.
- 6:17Phil: It is, it is.
- 6:18Tad Eggleston: Wait a minute.
- 6:20Tyler Johnson: I have it, but not in front of me.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: I've read 9, a somehow, like.
- 6:24Phil: Oh…
- 6:25Tad Eggleston: The Nightingales from Emile Wilson is.
- 6:28Phil: That would look really good.
- 6:28Tad Eggleston: of my favorite books of the year, and Emil.
- 6:31Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 6:31Tad Eggleston: on…
- 6:32Tyler Johnson: But Phil, yeah, if you haven't read Airman, you should.
- 6:35Tad Eggleston: on the… on the show as well. Yeah, I know Animan's totally on my list, but I haven't read it yet.
- 6:43Phil: Same, I guess.
- 6:44Tyler Johnson: I had it sitting…
- 6:45Phil: Pretty good.
- 6:45Tyler Johnson: I had it sitting in the shop on a bookshelf kind of propped open with that silly cover.
- 6:49Phil: Nice.
- 6:50Tyler Johnson: Waiting for people to go, what the is this? And no one did, so I just took it home.
- 6:54Phil: I was gonna say, you know, we need… we need, more literarily focused comic readers in your store. It sounds like you've got.
- 7:02Tyler Johnson: rate.
- 7:02Phil: Collections.
- 7:03Tyler Johnson: I have a great, you guys, I have like a comic creator's wet dream in there or comic.
- 7:08Tad Eggleston: I.
- 7:09Tyler Johnson: But you…
- 7:10Phil: It's comics, let's keep the dreams dry, please.
- 7:12Tyler Johnson: Yeah, but…
- 7:13Tad Eggleston: Quirky… you do quirky stuff, so you gotta get together with the local apothecary.
- 7:17Phil: Yeah, we did.
- 7:18Tyler Johnson: We do, we do. I don't know if you saw that last week.
- 7:21Tyler Johnson: I told you, I think, last week, we had.
- 7:23Tyler Johnson: Voice actors from.
- 7:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:25Tyler Johnson: watch.
- 7:26Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 7:27Tyler Johnson: So that was a, that was a collaboration between.
- 7:29Tad Eggleston: that.
- 7:30Tyler Johnson: expense.
- 7:30Tad Eggleston: sensory.
- 7:31Tyler Johnson: Dispensary and myself.
- 7:32Tad Eggleston: Oh, the apothecary.
- 7:33Phil: I thought that's what you meant by apothecary, to be honest.
- 7:36Tyler Johnson: Nope. No, the ethic area is a separate space.
- 7:38Phil: Wow.
- 7:39Tyler Johnson: She makes these… she makes drinks, like, mixed drinks. And so she made drinks, and she developed a drink specifically for that night. And so that was really cool. So yes, we're definitely on that already.
- 7:54Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 7:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, what you need to do is set up a book club with the apothecary.
- 8:00Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah.
- 8:01Phil: I can see that. I can see that happening.
- 8:03Tad Eggleston: Where they… where they put together a drink… a specific drink for the book that you're reading.
- 8:08Phil: I'm sure we could.
- 8:09Tad Eggleston: Got the space to have, like, the book club at the table at work.
- 8:15Phil: You know, I'm pretty sure there's a manga series called The Apothecary Diaries. I'm sure.
- 8:18Tyler Johnson: There is.
- 8:19Phil: Plenty of other apothecary themed comics or?
- 8:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but, I mean, that's not necessary.
- 8:25Tyler Johnson: But.
- 8:25Tad Eggleston: But.
- 8:26Tyler Johnson: But I do like that Tad a book club sponsoring with a drink themed, you know.
- 8:30Tad Eggleston: Right. Right.
- 8:33Phil: Very happening.
- 8:34Tad Eggleston: Also this week, Eddie's is already live, Stan's is in the, the…
- 8:41Tad Eggleston: coming soon mode, both Eddie Campbell and Stan Sakai have art books coming.
- 8:49Tad Eggleston: to Kickstarter. Well, again, Eddie's is already on Kickstarter, Stan's is coming soon.
- 8:56Tyler Johnson: When I read your, when I read your headline, I thought it was one book. I'm like, Nate Campbell and Stan Sakai, really?
- 9:03Tad Eggleston: No, no, no.
- 9:04Phil: Wait, the mashup.
- 9:06Tad Eggleston: I just…
- 9:08Phil: it.
- 9:08Tad Eggleston: know, when a couple of legendary artists that I that I that I like a lot.
- 9:15Tad Eggleston: put… similar news out into the ether in the same week, I decided to just control… er…
- 9:21Tad Eggleston: Pull them into, to… One.
- 9:26Phil: I never realized until now how badly I need the, Usagi Yojimbo versus Jack the Ripper crossover edition. Oh, yeah.
- 9:32Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 9:32Tyler Johnson: It's good.
- 9:34Tyler Johnson: Kate.
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: What kind of… what kind of week has it been? If, like, Phil, you didn't watch
- 9:41Tad Eggleston: Anything about the Jack Smith hearings? You owe it to yourself.
- 9:47Tad Eggleston: To… to… to watch Eric Schmidt.
- 9:51Tad Eggleston: Faceplant in his gotcha moment.
- 9:55Phil: Just verbally charge headfirst into a brick wall.
- 9:57Tyler Johnson: Yes. Okay, so here's the, here's the thing. It was Jack. Jack came in going, What the hell are they going to question me about and grill me about? And then very quickly, it was like, Oh, my God, you guys are so damn dumb. And it's so funny.
- 10:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:11Phil: Words to, on the administration's tombstone, oh my god, you are so damn dumb.
- 10:17Tyler Johnson: I mean, don't get me wrong. I think Jack Smith is tough as nails. He did not look worried to start with. However, he was going to get grilled about something and he was like, what the fuck is this about? You know?
- 10:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:31Phil: Not really.
- 10:32Tad Eggleston: Really? This is how you're using it?
- 10:33Phil: engineer.
- 10:34Tad Eggleston: time. You're asking me if I was at a basketball game?
- 10:38Tad Eggleston: Yep. In a place that I didn't go at all that year.
- 10:41Phil: Yep. Yep.
- 10:43Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait, you got it confused with a different basketball game. I think, I think it's more… Oh, is this gonna go badly for you?
- 10:52Phil: You guys, first of all, you botch a gotcha. That's… that's terrible. That's terrible anything.
- 10:58Tyler Johnson: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 10:59Phil: Yeah, yeah, second of all, if you cannot
- 11:03Phil: Place someone at a public event properly, you're bad at your job.
- 11:09Phil: like…
- 11:10Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 11:11Phil: you.
- 11:12Tad Eggleston: And, like… How much do white people love Caitlin Clark?
- 11:20Phil: I'm not sure who that is.
- 11:22Tad Eggleston: Caitlin.
- 11:23Tyler Johnson: She's a basketball player.
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: Okay, okay. The first white female basketball superstar.
- 11:30Phil: Okay.
- 11:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah, okay, she came from Iowa.
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: scoring record at Iowa.
- 11:37Tyler Johnson: Okay, so she came from Iowa, and then during Jack Smith's game that he went to was her last season as a college player before she went pro. That's why he would, that's what he wanted to see her.
- 11:48Tad Eggleston: And she was, I mean, she was a big story to people who pay attention to anything like that. I was hearing about her all the time. Same, because I…
- 11:58Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I mean, she was from the area.
- 12:00Tad Eggleston: And I want to make abundantly clear that this is, this is not a Caitlyn thing, this is a dumb white men thing.
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: She is now the center of, like, right-wing, why are the black players being mean to her, when they're not being mean to her, they're just playing
- 12:22Tad Eggleston: Basketball.
- 12:23Phil: Is she the…
- 12:24Tad Eggleston: But they're not used to watching women play basketball, so when women play basketball as hard as men play basketball, they decide that it's the black women being mean to Caitlin Clark.
- 12:37Tyler Johnson: That's just it.
- 12:38Phil: Is she the?
- 12:39Tyler Johnson: being mean to her. She's a lone white person out there. It's gonna look, it's gonna look different, you know?
- 12:44Tad Eggleston: I mean, she's not quite the loan, but…
- 12:46Phil: But is she… is she the vocally transphobic WNBA player?
- 12:50Tyler Johnson: all.
- 12:51Tad Eggleston: Oh no.
- 12:51Phil: Okay, okay.
- 12:52Tad Eggleston: No.
- 12:53Tyler Johnson: No, Caitlin's a… she's good at her.
- 12:55Tad Eggleston: No, that's… I don't… I don't think… I haven't heard of a vocally transphobic WNBA player. I think you're thinking of the… the fifth place Olympic swimmer?
- 13:06Phil: No, not just her. I remember hearing that there was a WNBA player who was, you know, contributing to right-wing.
- 13:13Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 13:14Phil: I didn't follow it too closely, so don't…
- 13:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I haven't heard any of that.
- 13:18Phil: But
- 13:19Tad Eggleston: And I certainly haven't heard… I mean, if it had been tied to her, I would have wound up hearing it.
- 13:25Tyler Johnson: Anywho, so that.
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: I can see people trying to tie it to her.
- 13:30Phil: Maybe? I don't know.
- 13:32Phil: I… I… again, I… it's… it's one of those things that I'm only mildly aware of.
- 13:36Tad Eggleston: I could totally see, like, Jesse Waters or some idiot.
- 13:41Tad Eggleston: using her… As somebody that needs to be protected from men playing girls' sports.
- 13:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 13:50Phil: Which isn't happening in the WNBA at all.
- 13:52Tad Eggleston: No, it really isn't, and… Yeah.
- 13:56Tyler Johnson: Not in the WNBA at all, you know.
- 13:58Tad Eggleston: And I don't… and I don't think that, honestly, I don't think that they'd need protection. I think that they would, probably hold their own pretty well.
- 14:08Phil: The evidence out there is that it's not a.
- 14:12Tad Eggleston: I.
- 14:12Phil: You know the sciences. Anyway, I.
- 14:14Tad Eggleston: decide.
- 14:15Phil: A picture of Caitlin Clark? No, that is not the person.
- 14:17Tad Eggleston: supply.
- 14:18Phil: thinking of is blonde. So,
- 14:19Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 14:20Phil: Apologies for the confusion.
- 14:22Tad Eggleston: So, so, yeah, so that, on a much brighter note, and I'm so happy that people are starting to finally actually notice the candidate. He was actually… he gave a great interview on Pod Save America yesterday.
- 14:38Tad Eggleston: Kansas.
- 14:41Tad Eggleston: Like the band? No, no.
- 14:44Phil: I was imagining the state.
- 14:45Tad Eggleston: The state that hasn't elected a Democratic senator in 94 years.
- 14:52Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 14:54Tad Eggleston: Has been shifted to… Lean red.
- 14:59Tad Eggleston: on everybody's… Polling. And… and toss-up on 3 of the major polling aggregators.
- 15:08Tad Eggleston: And the reason… the reason, like, I mean.
- 15:13Tad Eggleston: Obviously, the reason is, like, we're looking at the possibility of a blue tsunami, you know, the administration is ridiculously unpopular, that sort of thing, but I honestly think in Kansas, the bigger reason is Adam Hamilton. Adam Hamilton is a Methodist minister, the only Methodist minister who
- 15:30Tad Eggleston: has ever managed to build a megachurch. You know, they have 24,000 at his church every weekend, and upwards of 100,000 on
- 15:45Tad Eggleston: Easter and Christmas, right.
- 15:49Tad Eggleston: But… and, like, the way he describes his congregation is it's 35% Republican, 35% Democrat, and 30% Independent.
- 16:00Tad Eggleston: He… he, when asked the question about being
- 16:04Tad Eggleston: Liberal or conservative, he just says yes.
- 16:08Tad Eggleston: And then explains, you know, liberal.
- 16:11Phil: Oh.
- 16:12Tad Eggleston: is… Open to change to making things better. Of course I want to make things better. Conservative is…
- 16:20Tad Eggleston: preserving our values and the things that are important to us. Of course we should conserve the things that are important to us. Why aren't we all?
- 16:29Tad Eggleston: Both.
- 16:32Tyler Johnson: Yep,
- 16:33Phil: It's a solid message, you know?
- 16:35Tad Eggleston: Which some of that is politicking, and like…
- 16:37Phil: What's he running as?
- 16:39Tad Eggleston: He's running as a Democrat.
- 16:41Phil: Okay.
- 16:41Tad Eggleston: He has at times been a registered at times in his life been a registered Republican. : He spent a couple of years working on a committee that Obama put together.
- 16:52Tad Eggleston: And, gave the… the opening prayer at, I think, the second inauguration.
- 16:58Phil: -H.
- 17:01Tad Eggleston: I've actually known Adam Hamilton for a long time, because he writes books that get used in Methodist
- 17:07Tad Eggleston: Bible studies?
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: I'm certain other Bible studies as well, but I grew up Methodist, and, like, when and if I've been part of Bible studies, they've almost always been Methodist ones. But, like.
- 17:21Tad Eggleston: The two that stand out, or the three that stand out to me.
- 17:25Tad Eggleston: among the books that he's written is he wrote a book called Christianity and World Religions, where he really tried to teach about other religions and talk about, okay, how are they different?
- 17:38Tad Eggleston: How are they the same? What can we learn from them?
- 17:43Phil: That's cool. I like the sound of that.
- 17:45Tad Eggleston: Right. Another book.
- 17:47Tad Eggleston: called Christianity's Family Tree, where he went through the different denominations, and again, similar, you know, how are they different, how are they the same, what can we learn, you know?
- 17:56Phil: How.
- 17:56Tad Eggleston: something.
- 17:57Phil: Little.
- 17:58Tad Eggleston: bit more history. Well, I mean.
- 18:01Phil: It's important, though.
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: I, I think that that one's got a lot of value if for no other reason than, like
- 18:08Tad Eggleston: So many people will… particularly… Even so many people who, who…
- 18:16Tad Eggleston: are Christians, but certainly people who are non-Christians.
- 18:22Tad Eggleston: so easily paint…
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: the entire religion with the same brush. I mean, we have the same problem with Islam, we have the same problem.
- 18:30Phil: 2.
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: You know, so I think anything that reminds people that, like.
- 18:36Tad Eggleston: there are different ways of following one's faith is valuable. And the one that I love the most is.
- 18:46Tad Eggleston: When Christians get it wrong.
- 18:49Phil: Yeah.
- 18:51Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 18:51Tad Eggleston: Literally the title of a book of his.
- 18:54Phil: Oh, I see, oh, that's fun, okay.
- 18:56Tad Eggleston: Literally the title of a book of his.
- 18:58Phil: That's interesting.
- 18:59Tyler Johnson: You were saying you personally like it when Christians get things wrong. Me.
- 19:02Tad Eggleston: too.
- 19:02Phil: I.
- 19:03Tad Eggleston: No, I'm saying Adam Hamilton literally wrote a book called When Christians Get It Wrong.
- 19:10Phil: Very interesting.
- 19:11Phil: You know, for a guy from Kansas, he doesn't sound all bad.
- 19:15Tad Eggleston: Right. No, I think that if you read his stuff, not only would you like him, you would find yourself dabbling in Christianity.
- 19:23Phil: Whoa, don't go too far, then.
- 19:25Tad Eggleston: Only dabbling. I'm not saying that you would go…
- 19:28Phil: I mean, I'm absolutely curious about, like, about those aspects, like the history of it, comparison to other religions, and especially, you know, I am intrigued by a prominent
- 19:41Phil: Christian…
- 19:42Phil: Talking about the faults of the religion, just because all too often, do you hear the… the… Opposite, you know?
- 19:51Tad Eggleston: I mean, there was a time where I listened to a lot of his sermons, and I've obviously read a number of his books.
- 19:58Tad Eggleston: And if there's one quotation that I feel like I've heard more than any other.
- 20:04Tad Eggleston: It's actually something from Gandhi.
- 20:07Phil: Okay.
- 20:09Tad Eggleston: who said… I could have been a Christian.
- 20:14Tad Eggleston: If not for the Christians that I've known.
- 20:17Phil: Right. I think I've heard that quote. It's a good one.
- 20:20Tad Eggleston: And to have a minister who…
- 20:24Phil: Yeah. Acknowledges that. Right. Uses that question.
- 20:27Tad Eggleston: So he's… he's a really thoughtful guy.
- 20:30Phil: Yeah.
- 20:31Tad Eggleston: he's… he's… he is and has always been driven by service.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: You know, how can we do better by each other?
- 20:42Phil: Yeah.
- 20:43Tad Eggleston: You know, it's not about me telling you what you should or shouldn't do, it's about me asking myself, how can I help you?
- 20:53Tad Eggleston: You know, that to him is, like, the definition of Christianity.
- 20:59Tad Eggleston: Which is part of how he wound up running for Congress, or Senate.
- 21:04Tad Eggleston: Like, apparently, he'd said one too many times to his wife, somebody needs to do something about this, and finally she turned to him and said, Adam?
- 21:13Tad Eggleston: You're somebody.
- 21:16Phil: That's funny.
- 21:20Tyler Johnson: He got sick of it.
- 21:23Tad Eggleston: I am… I am… I am rooting for him big time. Anybody who wants to contribute or find out other ways to help for his campaign… with his campaign, it's Hamiltonforcandidates.com.
- 21:37Tad Eggleston: Pretty certain.com. Let me make certain that it's not a .org. That would be… Yeah, that would be embarrassing.
- 21:48Phil: And.
- 21:49Tyler Johnson: Hamilton for Kansas dot porn.
- 21:52Tad Eggleston: No, it is, it is.
- 21:54Phil: I'm sure it can be a thing, but I don't think… I don't think that's a prominent thing. I don't know what kind of websites you're going to, Tyler.
- 21:59Tad Eggleston: AI.
- 22:01Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 22:01Tad Eggleston: No, it should be.
- 22:03Tyler Johnson: Hold on, I just want to clear something up. They're porn sites.
- 22:06Phil: Okay, okay.
- 22:07Tyler Johnson: I just wanted to be clear.
- 22:08Phil: I wasn't familiar with, that…
- 22:10Tad Eggleston: He's all about WhiteHouse.com.
- 22:16Phil: Wow, alright, just really getting that governmental information.
- 22:20Tad Eggleston: But, no, actually, I mean, here's how much Hamilton has the Republicans scared. The, the… national…
- 22:32Tad Eggleston: Republican donors and whatnot have just announced that they're pouring $12 million into Kansas.
- 22:40Phil: Okay, yeah, so they're, they're, They're certainly scared.
- 22:46Tad Eggleston: I would be willing to bet that it's… never happened that $12 million got poured into Kansas.
- 22:54Phil: I mean, it's…
- 22:55Tad Eggleston: from.
- 22:55Phil: So.
- 22:56Tad Eggleston: hearing.
- 22:57Phil: So redlocked for so… like, the…
- 22:59Tad Eggleston: exactly.
- 22:59Phil: Possibility of a seat being.
- 23:03Phil: care.
- 23:03Tad Eggleston: But, but, but, like, I, I… you know, not everybody's gonna love this thing, and I understand people who don't like organized religion at all, etc.
- 23:15Tad Eggleston: But he has long been somebody that I've said.
- 23:19Tad Eggleston: is worth… Exploring.
- 23:24Tad Eggleston: I mean, I've often said, like, if you take… if you take the religion away from it, Jesus is a great teacher. That's true of Hamilton as well. I think they're both teachers even… they're great teachers even with the religion, but the religion is the only thing getting in the way of…
- 23:42Tad Eggleston: You being, you know.
- 23:46Tad Eggleston: And I hope, because I think he'd be a very steady and calming voice in Congress.
- 23:56Phil: I.
- 23:57Tad Eggleston: Tributes.
- 23:58Phil: I like the Christian leader who is openly…
- 24:04Phil: you know, creating more space for outside Christianity, you know, with that, hey, here's the other religions of the world sort of thing. One of the things that turns me off about a lot of Christians and Christianity is, like, that
- 24:19Phil: the… the evangelical… the evangelism of it. The, like, trying to convert everyone, and…
- 24:27Tad Eggleston: And certainly the loud evangelists are like.
- 24:30Phil: exactly.
- 24:31Tad Eggleston: But like.
- 24:31Phil: Yes.
- 24:32Tad Eggleston: Something that I've seen a lot that I've been really happy about is more and more churches at Pride events.
- 24:38Phil: Yeah, yeah. And that is hard.
- 24:41Tad Eggleston: Even in South Dakota.
- 24:43Tad Eggleston: That's cool. Pride Parade in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There were, like, 8 different churches.
- 24:52Tyler Johnson: That's right.
- 24:52Phil: Nice! I mean, and that's… that's the kind of stuff that…
- 24:56Phil: I mean, I've never even heard of happening in Tennessee, you know? I'm sure.
- 25:00Tad Eggleston: But I bet you it does.
- 25:01Phil: I'm sure there's maybe one. I'm sure there's at least one.
- 25:04Tad Eggleston: Actually, there's more than that. Because again, because again, like.
- 25:09Tad Eggleston: There is such a difference.
- 25:12Tad Eggleston: Between the way Christianity is.
- 25:16Tad Eggleston: portrayed on TV, and certainly the most vocal Christian voices.
- 25:23Tad Eggleston: And the way… That it's generally practiced.
- 25:30Phil: I think that there's a wide variety.
- 25:32Tad Eggleston: There is a huge… there's absolutely a wide variety, but anytime when there's a wide variety, that also means that whatever extremist is what's driving you up the wall.
- 25:41Phil: -h.
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: is generally a pretty big minority. Yeah. It's just that there's also enough differences in the rest of…
- 25:50Phil: I.
- 25:50Tad Eggleston: you.
- 25:51Phil: I think Christianity is ready for another schism. You know, I don't know.
- 25:54Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 25:54Phil: guys.
- 25:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, Christianity goes through schisms all the time.
- 25:57Phil: It never stops schizoming.
- 25:59Tad Eggleston: No, I mean, all of those evangelical churches are technically non-denominational. Yep. Because they don't want to be held to anybody else's thoughts.
- 26:11Tad Eggleston: Anyway, they don't want to have to, like, discuss with a conference.
- 26:16Phil: what they… Right.
- 26:17Tad Eggleston: what they believe. They want it to be up to the pastors.
- 26:20Phil: Interesting.
- 26:21Tyler Johnson: just.
- 26:21Tad Eggleston: Until they decide they don't like a pastor, and they push them out, and… And…
- 26:27Tyler Johnson: Someone else, another puppet in place that they.
- 26:29Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 26:29Tyler Johnson: To tell them what they want to hear.
- 26:31Tad Eggleston: Right, right. Anyway, let's get into some, initial orders for October, which are due… I still haven't filled this in. Tyler, do you know when your initial orders are due?
- 26:45Tyler Johnson: No.
- 26:46Tyler Johnson: Not off the top of my… Hold on.
- 26:53Tad Eggleston: Love it when even the, even the comic shop owner doesn't know when.
- 26:58Phil: Well, I mean, if it… is… is there a penalty for not putting in initial orders, or… No.
- 27:04Tyler Johnson: the.
- 27:05Phil: is.
- 27:05Tad Eggleston: Well, yes and no.
- 27:07Tyler Johnson: I don't go by initial orders as far as when I order stuff.
- 27:12Tad Eggleston: You do a lot more final order.
- 27:14Tyler Johnson: I'm in… I'm in between, yeah.
- 27:16Tad Eggleston: Which a lot of stores do. It's probably October… if I look at a calendar, I'm gonna guess that it's… I was gonna say the 23rd, because it's normally a Friday.
- 27:27Tyler Johnson: I've got Penguin up here, confirmed catalog by October 22nd, so…
- 27:31Tad Eggleston: Okay, then we'll say the 22nd. Yeah.
- 27:35Tad Eggleston: But, no, the biggest reason to put in initial orders is…
- 27:43Tad Eggleston: Most of the time.
- 27:45Tad Eggleston: You can order more copies up until final order cutoff, and you can always decrease your order until final order cutoff.
- 27:54Tad Eggleston: But particularly with small presses.
- 27:59Phil: Oh.
- 28:00Tad Eggleston: Sometimes they've kind of set their print number even before final order cutoff, so adding isn't always possible.
- 28:10Phil: I see.
- 28:11Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 28:13Tad Eggleston: Because it all depends on, you know…
- 28:17Phil: That's good to know.
- 28:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 28:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, Marvel DC, for the most part, if you order it final letter cut off, you're gonna get everything you want. But, like.
- 28:27Tad Eggleston: Drawn and Quarterly, Fanographic…
- 28:29Tyler Johnson: So.
- 28:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, Drawn and Quarterly and Fanographics are more likely to overprint, but… because they're going to the bookstore market, etc. But… but…
- 28:37Phil: Yeah.
- 28:38Tad Eggleston: Even… I mean, I don't know where Boom is now, but when I worked in a shop, if you didn't order Boom.
- 28:45Tad Eggleston: In the initial catalog, there were titles that…
- 28:48Phil: Mmm.
- 28:50Tad Eggleston: Were really hard to get.
- 28:51Phil: That's unfortunate, but but yeah.
- 28:53Tad Eggleston: And again, I think Boom has gotten bigger than that, but, but, but, like.
- 28:58Tad Eggleston: Again, like, well, I mean…
- 29:01Tad Eggleston: It all depends on how long their lead time is to print something. And in a perfect world, sure, you'd want the final order cutoff to be before they need to send things to print, etc. But you also want the final order cutoff to be after the last issue came out. You don't want to make stores.
- 29:21Phil: Yeah.
- 29:22Tad Eggleston: Lock in numbers.
- 29:24Phil: Before they've seen how the previous issue is sold, yeah.
- 29:27Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 29:28Tad Eggleston: So if you have more than a month lead time that you have to lock in your order.
- 29:35Tad Eggleston: You know… You gotta decide how many you're gonna print.
- 29:39Phil: Yeah.
- 29:40Tad Eggleston: You know… And if it winds up being a breakout hit, that might mean that
- 29:47Tad Eggleston: That the stores that weren't already on board have more trouble.
- 29:52Tad Eggleston: getting it.
- 29:54Tad Eggleston: So yeah, that's why we talk about them both initial and final order, is that, like, if you really want something, it's always better to order it way before final order cutoff.
- 30:06Phil: Yeah.
- 30:07Tad Eggleston: So, anyway, EC, artist from the abyss, David Lappin.
- 30:15Tad Eggleston: With, gasp, choke! EC Comics' celebration of its boldest and bloodiest talents rages forth as Comics Master and Eisner Award winner David Lapham takes center stage, which is all the more anxiety-inducing when you're a humanoid insect.
- 30:32Tad Eggleston: Infected with the urge to kill. Representing Lapham's greatest and goriest contributions to the new EC Comics canon.
- 30:41Tad Eggleston: Featuring taut tales of tension and terror, penned by collaborators Jay Holtham, Matt Kent, Joe R. Lansdale, and more. For the first time between two covers, this ad-free special also features a brand new, never-before-seen EC Shocker, illustrated by Lapham and co-written by Maria Lapham.
- 31:01Tad Eggleston: There's no swatting this one away, especially it weighs 200 pounds and it's coming right for you.
- 31:10Tyler Johnson: information.
- 31:11Tyler Johnson: It's awesome.
- 31:13Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff of November 23rd in stores on December 30th.
- 31:17Tyler Johnson: Keeping up with EC, this is the Shiver Suspense Stories 3, number 1, from John Arcootie and Ryan Kelly, from Oni.
- 31:28Tyler Johnson: Make a list, check it twice, because we're chopping off heads, both naughty and nice. This holiday season, chimneys will be running red as EC Comics unleashes its most terrifying assembly of sickening stocking stuffers, yet in an all-new, all-unhinged, 56-page giant.
- 31:47Tyler Johnson: That's right, Shiver Suspense Stories is back, and we're bringing three times the chills, three times the spills, and three times the murderous intent.
- 31:56Tyler Johnson: with us for our most vengeful celebration of Christmas, anarchy, and New Year's nightmares ever attempted. This has a final order cut off November 2nd, will be in shops, December 9th.
- 32:10Phil: The Forgotten Five, number 1.
- 32:12Phil: From Alex Segura, Sarah Sentry, Pat Kennedy, and Dean Kotz over at Image Comics. Decades ago, five teens with strange powers barely managed to escape the clutches of a shadowy organization known as the Contingency. Aided by former contingency agent Pauline Napier and her partner Gilly Stokes, they become The Five, a team of freedom-fighting outcasts.
- 32:34Phil: Years later, with the contingency defeated, the Five have grown up and moved on, leaving the world-saving to new teams of heroes across the country. But when rumors of their old foes begin to resurface, can the Forgotten Five cast off their civilian lives in order to reconnect and resume the fight?
- 32:50Phil: You'll have to find out, with a… when it hits stores on December 16th, and a final order cutoff of November 16th.
- 32:58Tyler Johnson: Oh, just my birthday.
- 33:00Phil: There you go.
- 33:01Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: See, did you see what I pulled out?
- 33:03Phil: Is that the David Lapham page?
- 33:06Tad Eggleston: It's a page from an E… it's an EC page from David Lapham.
- 33:10Phil: Is that the one that you bought before you read?
- 33:13Phil: when it came out. I remember hearing that you had a page like that, that… that…
- 33:16Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, the one that I bought before it came out was.
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: losing control.
- 33:21Phil: Oh, okay.
- 33:23Tad Eggleston: And then I also got this.
- 33:25Phil: Tad showing off his original art collection.
- 33:29Phil: you know…
- 33:30Tyler Johnson: see.
- 33:31Tad Eggleston: from here.
- 33:31Phil: One day. One day, a spider will have an origin.
- 33:34Tyler Johnson: All right. Did you finish? Sorry, Phil.
- 33:37Phil: idea.
- 33:37Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 33:38Phil: I.
- 33:38Tyler Johnson: Do.
- 33:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I waited till he finished to interrupt with my pretty David Lappin moment.
- 33:44Tyler Johnson: Alright, Fugitive X-Force number one from Tim Seeley and Athelia Fabio from Marvel. First, they were inglorious, now they're fugitives. When X-Force discovers that their leader Cable's mind has been compromised, a new leader arises.
- 33:59Tyler Johnson: Boom Boom takes over the team for the first time, but it couldn't be any… under any worse circumstances. X-Force has been framed for a horrific crime. As they run for their lives from, well, everyone, Domino searches for cable, but she might not like what she finds.
- 34:17Tyler Johnson: Final order cut off November 2nd will be in shops December 9th.
- 34:22Phil: Alright, next up, Pizza Justice goes global in the next adrenaline-fueled entry in Robert Venditti and David Lapham's striking new vision in the fight against crime. Eyeing a chance to expand into the Japanese market, Big Calicula smells dollar signs.
- 34:38Phil: The suits at corporate expect their first international location to be rolling in dough, but Big Caligula's Tokyo is coming up short on bread. Vandalism, stolen supply shipments, threats against employees. Someone in town has taken a hit out on pizza, and it's left the shop colder than a day-old slice. Luckily, they have Makoto, Big Caligula corporate detective.
- 35:01Phil: Eastern Division on the case, personally trained by Hank Howard himself. But when Detective Makoto goes missing, Hank suspects foul play, and he'll do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of things, even if it means burning it all down.
- 35:14Phil: That one, next edition of Hank Howard Pizza Detective is gonna have a final order cutoff of November 2nd in stores December 2nd.
- 35:24Tad Eggleston: The Princess Murders number 1 from Tim Seeley and Tony Fleeks.
- 35:30Tad Eggleston: the, team behind Local Man. Lovely Princess Lottie and her wicked step-sister Edwidge have arrived in the Kingdom of Sardinia, where princesses from around the globe are gathered to compete for the hand of the handsome Prince Carlo. But fairy tales have a way of turning
- 35:50Tad Eggleston: Grim. There's a black glove killer stalking the castle halls, and no one is safe. Now our princesses will fight.
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: to survive royal politics and backstabbing, both literal and figurative. The question is no longer, who will win the prince? It's who will die first, and will there be musical numbers? Final order cut off of November 9th in stores on December 9th.
- 36:16Tad Eggleston: How about some graphic novels? I get to lead off here. And this, just going out to anybody who's gonna be at New York Comic Con, and or, can go to…
- 36:30Tad Eggleston: to, Forbidden Planet in New York on the Wednesday before Comic-Con.
- 36:37Tad Eggleston: Mike McCready will be signing.
- 36:42Tad Eggleston: And I would really, really love to have Mike McCready as a guest on 22 Panels. So anybody who wants to plug us to Mike McCready, please, please.
- 36:56Tad Eggleston: And again, please, and like, if you can confirm that you were the one that arranged it, I'll absolutely let you co-host.
- 37:06Tad Eggleston: Farewell to seasons for Mike McCready, Mark Sable, and Sebastian Perez at Z2. Mike McCready, guitarist for Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog.
- 37:15Tyler Johnson: What? That Mike McCready?
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: Teamed up with Z2 to release the original graphic novel and lost.
- 37:22Tad Eggleston: Rock Opera, Mike McCready's Farewell to Seasons.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: Developed over the last 20 years, McCready's story captures the drive and sense of community that forged the powerful backbone of the Seattle music scene of the 1980s, as the world changed forever with the explosion of grunge in the 90s. Farewell to Seasons unflinchingly shows the brutal cost it had.
- 37:45Tad Eggleston: For so many artists and musicians, as it captures the lived experience of that seminal era. The glory and the heartbreak.
- 37:52Tad Eggleston: As it asks the unanswerable question.
- 37:56Tad Eggleston: Was it worth it?
- 37:58Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff of November 2nd, in stores December 2nd. If you're really smart like me, you already pre-ordered it direct from Z2 with the… the vinyl single, and I just…
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: Anxiously awaiting its arrival.
- 38:16Tyler Johnson: I mean…
- 38:16Phil: I'm a little shocked that you're soliciting help for getting McCready on the show. I'm surprised you're not gonna be there. I'm surprised you're not, you know, an opportunity for signing with the, you know, guitarists of Pearl Jam, and, you know.
- 38:32Phil: I mean, I don't know how…
- 38:34Tad Eggleston: I applied four times over for panels at New York. None of them got picked up.
- 38:39Phil: No. Worm worm. Okay. Well.
- 38:42Tad Eggleston: Can't afford to get there.
- 38:44Phil: That's fair, you know.
- 38:45Tad Eggleston: Pay for tickets.
- 38:46Phil: That's fair. That's fair. Okay.
- 38:50Tad Eggleston: I'd had tickets because a panel got picked up.
- 38:53Phil: Yeah, I understand.
- 38:54Tad Eggleston: Whole different thing.
- 38:56Phil: I understand.
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: And it only went out over the airwaves because I went through back channels for San Diego and didn't have… I'm still going through back channels, too. I'm going through every channel. I want Mike McCready.
- 39:09Phil: I know, I know it's your favorite band. That's why I'm like it's gotta happen, it's gotta.
- 39:13Tad Eggleston: I mean, if he brings Eddie and Jeff and Stone, that would be cool.
- 39:16Phil: But… but…
- 39:19Tad Eggleston: He's the one that made a comic book.
- 39:22Phil: Yup.
- 39:22Tyler Johnson: Who's drumming now? Matt Gaunt?
- 39:24Tad Eggleston: you Yeah, Matt actually did leave the band. Yeah.
- 39:29Tad Eggleston: This last weekend, it was, Abe Laborial.
- 39:33Tyler Johnson: Okay, I'm not sure.
- 39:34Tad Eggleston: Paul McCartney's touring drummer.
- 39:37Tyler Johnson: the.
- 39:37Tad Eggleston: of other stuff. Fantastic drummer. But they put out an announcement thanking him for drumming with them and thanking Paul for lending him to him, so I don't think he's the official…
- 39:47Tyler Johnson: the.
- 39:47Tad Eggleston: Rummer.
- 39:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 39:49Tad Eggleston: Matt Cameron's a hard guy to replace. I can't actually…
- 39:54Tyler Johnson: Well, so was Jack Irons. I mean, he was…
- 39:57Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, but… But, like, Cameron's the guy that could do it.
- 40:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 40:04Tad Eggleston: I mean.
- 40:05Tyler Johnson: But what I'm saying is they found, they found a replacement for Dave. They found a replacement for Jack. They can find a replacement for Matt.
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: I'm certain, but finding a replacement for either Dave wasn't a big deal. I mean, no offense to Cruisin'.
- 40:22Tad Eggleston: Maybe a little offensive.
- 40:23Tyler Johnson: I was talking about averages, but…
- 40:25Tad Eggleston: Like I said, maybe a little offense to Everzies. Yeah.
- 40:29Tyler Johnson: I was…
- 40:30Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 40:33Tad Eggleston: finding a replacement for either Dave wasn't a huge thing, and Jack Irons was actually the one that paired Eddie with the rest of the band to begin with, so he made sense.
- 40:42Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: Matt Cameron, they'd all played with on Temple of the Dog.
- 40:48Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 40:49Tad Eggleston: And was the original drummer on the demo that got sent down to Eddie to… so Matt Cameron also already had specific ties to the band.
- 40:59Tyler Johnson: I didn't know that he played on that demo to get.
- 41:01Tad Eggleston: any.
- 41:02Tyler Johnson: from.
- 41:03Tad Eggleston: So so like.
- 41:04Tyler Johnson: Mookie Blaylock, was that what they were called?
- 41:06Tad Eggleston: Well, they weren't called Mookie Blaylock yet, they were just… it was just a demo. It was called the.
- 41:10Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay, okay.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: Like, if you listen to… the 3 songs on that, it was… it was Footsteps, Alive, and… Yep.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: Footsteps alive, and… and… Either YGO or even FLOW, I can't remember right now.
- 41:33Tad Eggleston: And all they sent down to Eddie was… the instrumental track.
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: Including Cameron on drums.
- 41:42Tad Eggleston: Met McCready and Gossard on…
- 41:46Tyler Johnson: Sure.
- 41:46Tad Eggleston: Bass and guitars.
- 41:48Tad Eggleston: Eddie wrote the lyrics, and using a four-track That he had in his… apartment.
- 41:57Tyler Johnson: We.
- 41:57Tad Eggleston: recorded.
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: The vocals over the tape and sent it back.
- 42:02Tad Eggleston: Particularly with a live, you gotta be listening really closely.
- 42:08Tad Eggleston: To tell it.
- 42:10Tad Eggleston: from the album version.
- 42:12Tyler Johnson: Oh, really?
- 42:14Tyler Johnson: Well.
- 42:14Tad Eggleston: And honestly, part of the giveaway is the drums are better on
- 42:20Tad Eggleston: the demo version, because it's Matt Cameron.
- 42:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 42:24Phil: Alright.
- 42:25Tyler Johnson: All right, let's keep clicking along, guys. And with that.
- 42:28Phil: We have The Great Death from Regis Loisel and Jean Blaise, Jean and Vincent Mali, apologies for any pronunciation.
- 42:38Phil: When a broken-down car strands a stressed-out student in the countryside, Pauline's quiet study retreat turns into something far more dangerous and magical. Taken in by the reclusive Erwan, Pauline discovers a hidden realm of little people living alongside our own world, unseen but deeply entwined with it.
- 42:57Phil: As the fragile balance between worlds begins to fracture, Pauline and her friend Gail are drawn into a perilous journey that will test their courage, loyalty, and sense of responsibility.
- 43:09Phil: Blending contemporary fantasy with urgent themes of ecological balance and social justice, this spellbinding tale reveals how even the smallest lives can change the fate of two worlds. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of November 30th in stores, December 23rd, from Batcave Studios.
- 43:27Tyler Johnson: Alright, well…
- 43:28Tyler Johnson: My favorite podcast has come to an end. WTF is a podcast with Mark Marin. Mark Marin, Brendan McDonald, and Brian Box Brown put out a book from Z2.
- 43:40Tyler Johnson: Since 2009, Marc Maron's WTF podcast established the gold standard for podcasting… podcasting, and revolutionized entertainment, as it challenged the assumptions… challenged assumptions on what audiences would find compelling.
- 43:55Tyler Johnson: In the process, it garnered a loyal fan base and an unbelievable roster of guests, stretching out over a thousand episodes, including President Barack Obama.
- 44:05Tyler Johnson: In June of 2025, fans were heartbroken when it was announced that Mark would be ending the show officially. Now we can share the most exciting final chapter in the WTF book.

- 46:42Tad Eggleston: A new wildcat oil well has appeared on the property, and Tabby discovers Grandma uncommunicative, alone, and covered in oil. When Tabby reaches out to the oil company for help, they send Thomas Morton, an oil worker, to look into the strange occurrences on the ranch. - 53:06Tad Eggleston: I.
- 53:06Tyler Johnson: Pummel bundles? You got them. Okay.
- 53:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, one… should be one apiece for all of this stuff, right? Yep.
- 53:15Tad Eggleston: I want to make certain that the image one that I took off hasn't been extended.
- 53:22Tyler Johnson: I don't see it. I've been looking.
- 53:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it looks like it… it has been… Yeah.
- 53:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's still gonna expire soon enough that it shouldn't… The image mega bundle.
- 53:39Tad Eggleston: So, so it hasn't been extended, so… Maybe there's an image megabundle if you go, like, right now when you're listening first thing in the morning.
- 53:47Tad Eggleston: But, otherwise, we got Kurt Busy X Astro City, the 30th anniversary, $18 for 22 items, includes all of Astro City, and really all of Kurt Busy X's creator-owned work, Book Industry Charitable Foundation, through.
- 54:02Tyler Johnson: It's not just Astro City. It's the, it's the like kind of tie-ins too, like right Aerosmith, that kind of stuff, you know.
- 54:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like you said, all of his creative… creator-owned work. I don't know if those directly tie in, other than that they're also Buseac creator-owned titles.
- 54:19Tad Eggleston: But yeah.
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: 50 Essential Fantagraphics titles, $25 for 51 items, because there's also a digital zine celebrating 50 years of Fantagraphics for the Freedom of Press Foundation through October 7th. We'll be talking about a couple of those titles in a minute.
- 54:39Tad Eggleston: Batman Day Comics Bundle, $20 for 31 items, Book Industry Charitable Foundation through October 10th. It's a lot of modern Batman, like, post-Tom King era, a few older things.
- 54:53Tad Eggleston: And then Dark Places and Endless Night. Sheer Horror from IDW, $18 for 33 items. Also for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation.
- 55:04Tad Eggleston: Big highlights for me in this are both volumes of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and all of Locke and Key.
- 55:13Tad Eggleston: Three amazing books this week. I'm gonna lead off with
- 55:17Tad Eggleston: Bleeding Hearts number 8 from Dennis Camp and Stippin Morian. Oh my god, this story just keeps getting better, and this is.
- 55:26Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna… I'm gonna tag on with you, that is also my name.
- 55:29Tad Eggleston: Our heart out. Yep. Like, I cried. I cried.
- 55:33Tyler Johnson: Literally, because it's a story about a human heart. Your heart can be ripped out during this, as the heart comes back to life.
- 55:43Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 55:43Tyler Johnson: What's up?
- 55:44Tad Eggleston: Oh, so, so.
- 55:46Tyler Johnson: So, it's really good.
- 55:48Tad Eggleston: good.
- 55:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 55:50Tad Eggleston: Smart Division number 2 from Zach Kaplan and John J. Pearson at Dark Horse. It's an old-school detective with a new-school smartphone
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: digital detective type.
- 56:06Tad Eggleston: You know, solving… solving…
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: Solving a crime involving a rogue AI, so yeah, it all works out cool. And, like, when Zach and.
- 56:19Tyler Johnson: It sounded like you said a rogue gay guy.
- 56:21Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, Rogue…
- 56:23Tyler Johnson: AI.
- 56:24Tad Eggleston: I, and I refuse… I don't even like calling it AI, but I refuse to call it SI.
- 56:30Tad Eggleston: What's that say?
- 56:31Tyler Johnson: What does that say?
- 56:32Tad Eggleston: Well, didn't you read the official presidential proclamation that it's now superintelligence?
- 56:39Phil: No.
- 56:39Tad Eggleston: Artificial intelligence.
- 56:41Tyler Johnson: No.
- 56:41Phil: know.
- 56:42Tyler Johnson: Bing!
- 56:42Phil: I… I… quite frankly, I try to avoid as much brain damage as I can.
- 56:47Tad Eggleston: Well, yes, but all of the companies have, like, fallen in line.
- 56:52Phil: You mean all of the companies that are using a fear of technology as a means to somehow dodge
- 57:02Phil: cope, like…
- 57:04Tad Eggleston: Well, no.
- 57:04Phil: and regulation.
- 57:05Tad Eggleston: This all, this all, this all came together when they had their little sit-down and came to their non-binding agreement to behave.
- 57:12Phil: Oh, okay.
- 57:13Tad Eggleston: And spelled United States wrong.
- 57:16Phil: I see, I see. I mean, that's not surprising when they leave everything to the LLMs, it's, you know.
- 57:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. Donald Trump signed above a line that said, President of United States.
- 57:28Phil: Oof.
- 57:30Phil: That's probably not valid. We should say that's not valid. United States… cut it.
- 57:35Phil: I did see a headline that supposedly, we invaded Venezuela because Trump had a conversation with Grok that urged him to do so.
- 57:44Tad Eggleston: I believe it.
- 57:46Phil: Yeah.
- 57:47Tad Eggleston: I didn't, but I believe it.
- 57:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 57:50Tyler Johnson: Oh, God.
- 57:51Tad Eggleston: Anyway, mind management, you improved number four for Matt Kent.
- 57:57Tad Eggleston: I love me some mind management, I love me some Matt Kent.
- 58:01Tad Eggleston: I don't wanna… I wanna be as spoiler-free as possible, but, like… This one, like…
- 58:12Tad Eggleston: I mean, you've kinda, kinda seen it coming a little bit.
- 58:17Tad Eggleston: And there were elements of it in the original Mind Management, but… but… Like…
- 58:24Tad Eggleston: It feels like… The plot line is going towards… towards our primary characters right now, like, actually trying to figure out, okay.
- 58:36Tad Eggleston: Who's behind mind management?
- 58:41Tad Eggleston: Which has been, like, one of the elephants in the room forever.
- 58:47Tyler Johnson: Do you mean beyond Zach Kaplan? I mean…
- 58:50Tad Eggleston: What do you mean behind Matt Kent?
- 58:52Tyler Johnson: This is what I meant.
- 58:53Tad Eggleston: I mean, maybe that'll be where.
- 58:54Phil: us.
- 58:55Tad Eggleston: Maybe that.
- 58:55Phil: graduate.
- 58:56Tad Eggleston: Where it goes, eventually they'll.
- 58:57Tyler Johnson: see.
- 58:58Tad Eggleston: The, the, the pencil on the paper.
- 59:01Tad Eggleston: Ha ha ha.
- 59:04Tyler Johnson: Matt, sorry.
- 59:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I loved it. So, Tyler, what three did you love? And I love.
- 59:12Tyler Johnson: Well.
- 59:13Tad Eggleston: I loved your three, too. Bleeding Birds was by far.
- 59:16Tyler Johnson: far and away the best.
- 59:16Tad Eggleston: I have a signed remarked of your number 3.
- 59:21Tyler Johnson: Dude. The, the bleeding hearts this week tore it out of the water for me.
- 59:28Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 59:28Tyler Johnson: Denny Camp is killing it. And Jimmy Palmiotti had Denver number two come out.
- 59:35Tyler Johnson: with Justin Gray and Pierre Brito from Mad Cave, that was really good, I'm really enjoying Denver so far.
- 59:42Tyler Johnson: And then Money Shot has always been awesome. This, this arc, Money Shot the Fuck Offs, number 2, from Tim Seeley and Patton Oswalt and Garth Graham from Vault was awesome.
- 59:58Tyler Johnson: I I love.
- 59:58Tad Eggleston: stuff.
- 59:59Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 1:00:00Tad Eggleston: Good stuff. Phil, take a walk.
- 1:00:03Phil: Yeah, I really, you know, there was… I mean, I actually, I read probably more comics this week than I have most weeks, you know? It was a full, like.
- 1:00:13Tad Eggleston: You're not supposed to admit that on air.
- 1:00:15Phil: Two and a half bucks. I, you know, I, I, I… time gets away from me, it's weird.
- 1:00:20Tyler Johnson: No, but…
- 1:00:20Phil: Yeah.
- 1:00:21Tyler Johnson: So, have you considered faking it?
- 1:00:24Phil: Yes, and it, it…
- 1:00:27Tad Eggleston: His wife doesn't like it when he does that Exactly.
- 1:00:30Tyler Johnson: You know, I mean…
- 1:00:31Phil: For the record.
- 1:00:32Tyler Johnson: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Why do you say?
- 1:00:35Phil: Yeah.
- 1:00:35Tyler Johnson: Remember that Seinfeld skit right where they.
- 1:00:37Phil: Right.
- 1:00:38Tyler Johnson: Where Kramer's just like, sometimes when you've had enough is enough, you can fake it to end it.
- 1:00:43Phil: That's a long one, yeah, no. No, no, no. But I was, of that comic reading, I was completely enamored, blown away by, starting to read Garden of Spheres by Linnea Sart. Have you started it, too? Did you get, you get.
- 1:01:00Tad Eggleston: I read it.
- 1:01:01Phil: Long time.
- 1:01:02Tad Eggleston: ago.
- 1:01:02Phil: Oh, I see. I have not.
- 1:01:03Tyler Johnson: I have not. I know nothing about it.
- 1:01:05Phil: Nothing. It's a fantasy story about an immortal woman who…
- 1:01:12Phil: appears to be, an unmaker or a god of death of some sort wandering the land. It's really cool. A lot of, like, crazy creature drawings, and it's mostly silent. It's pretty… it's pretty, sparse on… on the dialogue, but, honestly, it's incredibly captivating drawings.
- 1:01:31Phil: Yeah, incredible use of color.
- 1:01:34Phil: yeah, just… just… it is exactly my cup of tea, the kind of thing where I'm like, holy shit, I would read, you know… I love that it's… it's a, like, a…
- 1:01:43Phil: 300 or so page book, and it says Volume 1, so I'm hoping that she's continuing it, and I could read, you know, 10,000 pages of this. That's how good it is.
- 1:01:55Phil: That's awesome. But yeah, but no, the, I'll have you know, in our MAGA race.
- 1:02:02Phil: that, I also plowed through the entirety of Goodnight Pun Pun Volume 3, you know, the night… the night that I picked it up from the library, so I'm now through 67 chapters of that.
- 1:02:16Tad Eggleston: I did read.
- 1:02:18Tad Eggleston: Three chapters.
- 1:02:19Phil: Okay. Oh, I see that now. I see that now.
- 1:02:22Tad Eggleston: of,
- 1:02:23Phil: Okay.
- 1:02:24Tyler Johnson: One beast.
- 1:02:24Tad Eggleston: Of one piece this week. Yep. We still are in the arena with Luffy in disguise as Lucy. It's like a fight to the death, gladiatorial… or fight till there's only one left, gladiatorial type thing. And we discovered that…
- 1:02:43Tyler Johnson: This is…
- 1:02:45Tad Eggleston: That, like, this… this… this island that we're on that's inhabited by
- 1:02:50Tad Eggleston: by humans and toys, may have, some darker secrets.
- 1:02:58Tad Eggleston: So I'm digging it.
- 1:02:59Tyler Johnson: I…
- 1:03:00Tyler Johnson: I love it that we're still counting the weeks. This is week 118 of the One Piece race, which I have not been a part of in 6-7 months, so I don't know if it's even a race anymore, but I love it that we're keeping track of the weeks. Guys, this is over 2 years of…
- 1:03:18Phil: I think it's been at least a year since you've put up numbers in the One Piece race, so…
- 1:03:23Tyler Johnson: Probably, probably, probably, at least.
- 1:03:27Tyler Johnson: At least. Okay, but anyway, I love it that we're still keeping track.
- 1:03:31Phil: It's a marathon. It's a marathon race. You can't.
- 1:03:33Tad Eggleston: We even went back and fixed the numbers at one point.
- 1:03:36Tyler Johnson: Wouldn't it be funny, you guys, if I won? Like, somehow…
- 1:03:39Tad Eggleston: would be.
- 1:03:40Tyler Johnson: just…
- 1:03:40Tad Eggleston: I'm sure.
- 1:03:41Tad Eggleston: Just somehow. Talk about your darn.
- 1:03:43Phil: Of course, he ended it. Yeah.
- 1:03:45Tyler Johnson: What?
- 1:03:45Phil: Yeah.
- 1:03:46Tyler Johnson: I'm ahead of Phil, I know.
- 1:03:47Tad Eggleston: Bill.
- 1:03:47Phil: I know. I'm imagining that.
- 1:03:52Phil: by… because, you know, the only time I read One Piece was in, like, 8th grade. I think it was, like, the first two volumes or so. So it'd be funny to put up numbers for, like, alright, you know, Tad read all of One Piece, Tyler read this much One Piece, Phil read this much One Piece, and then this much manga in the meantime, you know?
- 1:04:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah, we'll have a chart. I'll make a chart to put up there.
- 1:04:12Tad Eggleston: Which is, like, 80% of the manga you've read.
- 1:04:14Tad Eggleston: I've also read.
- 1:04:16Phil: I'm sure.
- 1:04:16Tyler Johnson: I.
- 1:04:17Phil: I don't know about 80 percent. I mean if my joke was like lifetime numbers because one piece was like one of the first.
- 1:04:23Tad Eggleston: Oh, I just, I just mean the stuff that you've put up.
- 1:04:26Phil: Yeah, the stuff I put up.
- 1:04:27Tad Eggleston: The stuff that you've read since joining the race.
- 1:04:32Phil: You read Tower Dungeons?
- 1:04:35Tad Eggleston: Tower Dungeon I haven't read.
- 1:04:36Phil: It's good. It's really good.
- 1:04:37Tad Eggleston: And the smoking one I haven't read, and I think I've read everything else.
- 1:04:41Phil: Okay, that's powerful. I mean, I know you've.
- 1:04:43Tad Eggleston: And I've read a number of things that you haven't read, because I've read almost everything by Ennio Asano. I've read…
- 1:04:51Tad Eggleston: Probably half of Urasawa.
- 1:04:54Tad Eggleston: I'm Bread.
- 1:04:55Tyler Johnson: Roselle is so good.
- 1:04:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I've read a lot of Ramiko Takahashi.
- 1:05:02Phil: I don't think I've read any for Miko Takahashi. I'm familiar with the name, but I don't think I've read anything by her.
- 1:05:07Tad Eggleston: lot.
- 1:05:08Tyler Johnson: Tezuka.
- 1:05:08Tad Eggleston: huh?
- 1:05:09Tyler Johnson: you Alright, well, I'm gonna keep this going, because I actually have to use the mouse.
- 1:05:13Tad Eggleston: The years of Thanagar.
- 1:05:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:05:15Tad Eggleston: So we keep talking about the 50 items from Fantagraphics that represents their 50th anniversary.
- 1:05:22Tad Eggleston: You know, as well as bringing us wonderful things like Love and Rockets, and… and… 8 ball… hate…
- 1:05:32Tad Eggleston: Fantagraphics has put out a lot of great graphic novels, and we each
- 1:05:36Tad Eggleston: picked one for this week. Tyler, since I know you need to run away to the bathroom, why don't you start, and then you can go do your thing. Unless you need to sit. I mean, if you need to sit.
- 1:05:47Tyler Johnson: It is.
- 1:05:48Tad Eggleston: a while.
- 1:05:49Tyler Johnson: Yes, it is the second.
- 1:05:50Phil: What… what happened to that time Tyler used the bathroom on the podcast? I swear it was one time.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 1:05:57Tyler Johnson: Gotcha.
- 1:05:57Tad Eggleston: It is possible. Do you have a laptop? You can just go sit.
- 1:06:01Phil: It's true.
- 1:06:03Tyler Johnson: I can, and I can…
- 1:06:05Phil: Just some aggressive muting.
- 1:06:07Tyler Johnson: Yeah, aggressive muting. No, okay, bottomless belly button is what I read, guys.
- 1:06:14Tad Eggleston: Dash Shaw.
- 1:06:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:06:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah, sure. And this was my…
- 1:06:18Tyler Johnson: is.
- 1:06:18Tad Eggleston: Dr.
- 1:06:19Tyler Johnson: Holy buckets, you guys. 720 page graphic novel. Wow. That's a lot of belly buckets.
- 1:06:25Tad Eggleston: I forgot that it was that long.
- 1:06:27Phil: might.
- 1:06:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:06:28Phil: button.
- 1:06:29Tyler Johnson: I am not done with it, I'm not gonna… Okay. So, this is from 2008, Phantographics 2008, right? Earned, like, tons of honors and stuff like that, and it's got the prestigious, the Aguilem International Comics Festival, stuff like that. The plot was, like, this crazy…
- 1:06:48Tyler Johnson: dysfunctional loony family. That's literally what they're called, right? And the patriarch and the matriarch of the family announced they're getting divorced after, like, 40 years. And they're just so nonchalant about it, they're like, we're just not in love anymore. And then it's kind of, you know, the rest of the family members working through their
- 1:07:07Tyler Johnson: frustrations in their own marital issues, and it's… it's crazy. It's really fun. The artwork is simplistic, yet depressing. I don't know if that would make sense, but it's just… it's just the blue coloring of it all, really lends itself to just being sad.
- 1:07:25Tyler Johnson: you know, what do you… what'd you think of it, Tad? Did…
- 1:07:31Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 1:07:32Tyler Johnson: I'm not even done with it.
- 1:07:33Tad Eggleston: I haven't… I haven't read it in years, which is one of the reasons I forgot that it was that long, but it's just quirky and weird, and like…
- 1:07:43Tad Eggleston: As long as it is, I remember that I actually wound up reading it in one sitting.
- 1:07:52Tyler Johnson: You did? It wouldn't be hard.
- 1:07:54Tad Eggleston: I couldn't put it down.
- 1:07:56Tyler Johnson: Bottom of the belly button. Right. You guys, because it's… I mean, the text is sparse, it's not… it's not overly dense.
- 1:08:02Tad Eggleston: Very visual.
- 1:08:03Tyler Johnson: through that. Yeah, you know, I can see that.
- 1:08:06Tyler Johnson: Time… I've… listen, it… on my app here, Panels is what I use for reading this. My time reading book has now been 2 hours and, 25 seconds.
- 1:08:18Phil: Okay.
- 1:08:19Tyler Johnson: So… and I've barely made a dent into this thing, so…
- 1:08:23Phil: Damn.
- 1:08:24Tyler Johnson: Anyway, but it's really good.
- 1:08:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Dash Shaw is a special cartoonist.
- 1:08:30Tyler Johnson: difficult.
- 1:08:30Tad Eggleston: glad that you're being introduced to him, because I think… I think there's a lot of Dash Shaw stuff that you'd like.
- 1:08:37Tyler Johnson: The most interesting character, though, like the youngest brother, he kind of is he wearing a costume or does he just look like a frog? I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:08:45Tad Eggleston: I don't…
- 1:08:45Tyler Johnson: But he's the youngest son. He's very insecure.
- 1:08:49Tad Eggleston: You're crackly, Tyler.
- 1:08:51Tyler Johnson: I am? Oh.
- 1:08:53Tyler Johnson: Okay, how's that?
- 1:08:54Tyler Johnson: Better?
- 1:08:56Tad Eggleston: Ezekiel.
- 1:08:57Phil: Jackal?
- 1:08:58Tad Eggleston: You're not hearing any crack.
- 1:08:58Phil: I.
- 1:08:59Tad Eggleston: Probably my headphones.
- 1:09:00Phil: Okay.
- 1:09:01Tyler Johnson: Hear me now.
- 1:09:01Tad Eggleston: those.
- 1:09:02Phil: I can hear you.
- 1:09:03Tad Eggleston: No, I'm still hearing it. It's probably the headphones. Give me a sec.
- 1:09:05Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:09:07Tad Eggleston: We'll skip over me and go to Phil.
- 1:09:09Phil: Okay, Yes.
- 1:09:12Tyler Johnson: go-ahead.
- 1:09:12Phil: Are you done? Okay, alright, yeah.
- 1:09:13Tyler Johnson: Oh, I was just talking about Peter, because he was, like, a filmmaker, and he's really insecure, and so that just kind of lends itself, like, kind of the… another overarching theme, at least in the parts that I've read so far, is Peter's.
- 1:09:28Tyler Johnson: I don't know.
- 1:09:29Tyler Johnson: Failure isn't the right word. He's just not a great filmmaker, you know.
- 1:09:33Phil: Okay.
- 1:09:34Tyler Johnson: But anyway, go on, Phil. You're up.
- 1:09:37Phil: Right. Yeah, I read, Raised by Ghosts, by Brianna Lowenson. Yep.
- 1:09:45Phil: which was… I very much enjoyed. It was really good. It was interesting because, like, the first hundred pages or so was, again, very quiet, just four-panel, comics. Oddly enough, most… there's a good amount of the dialogue that was, like.
- 1:10:03Phil: just blurred out words, but only one or two popped, like, you know, the… Brianna, the main character, was, like, only barely listening to what was going on, so.
- 1:10:13Phil: But it was still… and then there would occasionally be, like, torn scrap pages of, diary entries and notes and whatnot. So, it was really interesting seeing… seeing that for, like, you know, again, about 100 pages. And then she literally dives into the notebook page.
- 1:10:29Phil: And, has this, like, extended sequence of… I took it as a metaphor for, like, her…
- 1:10:36Phil: dealing with depression and isolation, through her art, you know? And then after that, there was more… the page… the page shape, like, completely changed, whereas before it was, like, boxed in, and there were more text overlaid with images. It felt like it became, like, a full comic for the last, the last…
- 1:10:54Phil: the third act, you know, the end of it, but yeah, I very much enjoyed it for.
- 1:10:59Phil: you know, a young person growing up in the 90s, which I was aware of, you know, I was there for, just, you know, 10 years younger. And yeah, and it actually… it was funny, I thought, I was like, wow, when did this come out? This is, this is, you know, really nice. It came out last year. So, you know, it's funny.
- 1:11:17Tad Eggleston: That one's really recent.
- 1:11:19Phil: Yeah, super recent. But I was gonna say, part of why I said that I read, you know, more this week than usual is because I just did a quick page tally, because I also read the first third of, Stone Fruit by Lee Lai. I just got tired, and so I was like, okay, I got one under my belt.
- 1:11:35Phil: You know, but I read, like, 900 pages of comics from Friday night to…
- 1:11:39Phil: through… through yesterday, so that's why I said that's more than…
- 1:11:42Tad Eggleston: Okay, so so so.
- 1:11:43Phil: Volume, page count-wise.
- 1:11:45Tad Eggleston: You hit, like, my average week. Yeah. Gotcha. Yeah. Gotcha.
- 1:11:50Phil: Yeah, Tad, again, we've talked about how, how, like.
- 1:11:53Phil: exceptionally prolific you are. You're probably within the top 100.
- 1:12:00Tad Eggleston: slightly.
- 1:12:00Phil: read comic people in the world.
- 1:12:02Tad Eggleston: You could try.
- 1:12:03Tyler Johnson: Wow.
- 1:12:05Phil: Good, you're right!
- 1:12:06Tyler Johnson: What?
- 1:12:06Phil: Absolutely right.
- 1:12:07Tyler Johnson: the.
- 1:12:07Phil: Absolutely right.
- 1:12:08Tyler Johnson: That was so funny.
- 1:12:10Phil: That was only like 2 days. It was only like 2 days worth of reading, but still yes.
- 1:12:15Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:12:15Phil: Yes.
- 1:12:16Tyler Johnson: Aspirational, you know.
- 1:12:19Phil: Big shoes to live up to.
- 1:12:20Tyler Johnson: This.
- 1:12:21Phil: I'd also say that Tyler, you could tell your wife that we did church on the podcast this week since we talked about religion.
- 1:12:26Tad Eggleston: We did. We did do some church on the podcast.
- 1:12:28Phil: So.
- 1:12:28Tyler Johnson: George on the podcast.
- 1:12:30Phil: You've already been to church and back, you know. Talk to her about Adam Hamilton.
- 1:12:34Tad Eggleston: she comes back.
- 1:12:35Tyler Johnson: Oh, that's funny.
- 1:12:38Phil: Tad, what'd you reread this week?
- 1:12:40Tad Eggleston: It wasn't a reread. This was the first time that I read any of Jim Woodring's Frank.
- 1:12:46Phil: I almost picked that book, too.
- 1:12:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I read the Frank book.
- 1:12:50Tad Eggleston: I didn't actually finish the Frank book, it's longish, and I read a lot of weekly comics this week, and…
- 1:12:58Phil: But isn't it silent?
- 1:12:59Tad Eggleston: comics just for myself. It is silent, but it's…
- 1:13:01Phil: Yes.
- 1:13:02Tad Eggleston: it's… It's silent that you don't want to, like, just flash through.
- 1:13:08Phil: That's fair. I have seen bits of Woodring's psychedelic.
- 1:13:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:13:12Phil: stuff.
- 1:13:13Tad Eggleston: It's… it's… it's like… it's like…
- 1:13:18Tad Eggleston: You can see the crazy cat influence. You can see
- 1:13:22Tad Eggleston: The psychedelic feeling, you know, the underground influence, the hatching is beautiful.
- 1:13:30Tad Eggleston: It's silly and whimsical, and you can still kind of see… Like… Meaning… hidden underneath various things.
- 1:13:43Tad Eggleston: You know, certainly elements of, like, be careful what you wish for, and… and… And whatnot, and, like…
- 1:13:53Tad Eggleston: It's just a really… fantastic world that I definitely want to spend more time in, but don't…
- 1:14:01Tad Eggleston: Entirely know how to describe. Except that it, like, it made me laugh.
- 1:14:07Tad Eggleston: You know, I didn't fully realize that Frank was just gonna be this dog character.
- 1:14:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I mean, I honestly… To be honest, I knew a ton of people loved Jim Woodring.
- 1:14:21Tad Eggleston: I knew Frank was his big book.
- 1:14:24Tad Eggleston: And the second issue of Roy came out recently, and I remember Natalia Hernandez both loved his work, and
- 1:14:33Tad Eggleston: had known and loved him as a person before that, because, you know, her dad's Beto Hernandez, so… so it's like, she was reading and loved it, and it's like, oh yeah, that's your Uncle Jim, and it's like, really? That's funny.
- 1:14:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't know if it was Uncle Jim, but that's Jim.
- 1:14:54Phil: Admittedly.
- 1:14:55Phil: what I… because I'd been… I've been, like, weirdly aware of Jim Woodring since college, like, a good 15 years now, because he built a giant pen. He built, like, a… it was, like, a pen nib that was, like, several feet long.
- 1:15:12Tad Eggleston: wow.
- 1:15:13Phil: Yeah, it was… you should look it up, it's… he… it was, like, a comically large pen that he actually used to draw some comics. I don't know if he did a whole book that way, but it was funny, eventually he was like, yeah, it's a little bit too big to use comfortably, and it's like, you don't say a good, like.
- 1:15:29Phil: You know, 5 or 6 foot…
- 1:15:31Tad Eggleston: Wired had an article.
- 1:15:33Phil: Yeah. Jim Woodring, Shane Penn.
- 1:15:35Tad Eggleston: Ring wields 7-foot pen, strikes Artie Blow.
- 1:15:41Phil: So… so that's… ever since I heard about it, I'm like, I should, you know… and then finding out that he does weird, trippy, psychedelic…
- 1:15:48Phil: silent stories. I'm like, I should read some of these at some point. Right. I have… but still haven't yet.
- 1:15:52Tad Eggleston: Well, and they're cool, and again, like.
- 1:15:56Tad Eggleston: Here, I'm just gonna… I'm just gonna share the… the… the two pages that are in the Wired article that I just pulled up, in case Tyler doesn't know him as well.
- 1:16:08Tyler Johnson: Actually, guys, I really have to go to the bathroom, so I'm gonna go do that.
- 1:16:11Phil: wishing.
- 1:16:12Tad Eggleston: Well, let's, let's, let's…
- 1:16:14Phil: Let him go and we can come back and take us out, you know.
- 1:16:18Tad Eggleston: Right. Go.
- 1:16:19Tyler Johnson: it.
- 1:16:20Tad Eggleston: Go, go, go.
- 1:16:21Tyler Johnson: Just go, okay.
- 1:16:22Phil: an accident on the podcast. Not again.
- 1:16:25Tyler Johnson: Hmm.
- 1:16:25Tad Eggleston: Or we could wrap, because I don't have anything more to say about wood rings, so we can get into Spectacular really fast if…
- 1:16:34Tad Eggleston: If you would rather not.
- 1:16:35Phil: Tyler's face is like.
- 1:16:37Tad Eggleston: No, I'm asking Tyler, do you want to run to the bathroom, or do you want to wrap and run to the bathroom?
- 1:16:42Tyler Johnson: We can… yeah, let's go through our books further, we hope we'll be successful.
- 1:16:45Tad Eggleston: Alright, alright. Books I hope will be spectacular. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, Halloween Special from Patrick Horvath, James Tynion, Tony Fleeks, and Jay Grayson, and Dave Wachter, Jared Cullum, and Tyler Boss, and Matt Emmons, all at IDW. The conclusion of Of the Earth.
- 1:17:05Tad Eggleston: From Chris Condon, Charlie Adlard, and Andrew Eric, and the introduction to Dinner Date from Joanne Starer and.
- 1:17:11Phil: That looks good.
- 1:17:12Tad Eggleston: Randolph.
- 1:17:13Tad Eggleston: Books I know are spectacular. Flux House presents number one for Matt Kent, Brian Hurt, David Lapham, and Ella Kent at ONI.
- 1:17:21Tad Eggleston: This is essentially a… a flux house, anthology book. It teases some upcoming series, has a couple of stories that are just for the anthology.
- 1:17:34Tad Eggleston: That sort of thing, very cool. And Starhenge Book 2, A Kiss for Atticus No. 4, the conclusion of this story from Liam Sharp, is amazing. If you were waiting on
- 1:17:45Tad Eggleston: Dead Teenagers, If Destruction VR Lot, Is Ted Okay, Narco, or Santos Sisters? They all have collections coming out this week.
- 1:17:54Tad Eggleston: And Requiem from Gaza from Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco is definitely one that I'm looking forward to. this week in the graphic novel category. Lots of honorable mentions, but we won't put Tyler through that.
- 1:18:09Tyler Johnson: which.
- 1:18:09Tad Eggleston: All new, giant-sized trade waiter graphic novel pick!
- 1:18:14Phil: Considering the theme of this week's Great Responsibility, I had to go with Forming from Jesse Moynihan at Fantagraphics. Looks weird, looks trippy.
- 1:18:23Tad Eggleston: Fantastic.
- 1:18:24Phil: Yeah, I…
- 1:18:24Tyler Johnson: I'm gonna check it out. It looks really good.
- 1:18:26Phil: Seriously.
- 1:18:27Tad Eggleston: This is a good Fantagraphics week. You've got Forming, you've got, the aforementioned Requiem at Gaza, and you have the Collected Palomar Heartbreak Soup Stories from Gilbert Hernandez.
- 1:18:40Tyler Johnson: Yep. And then, like you said, that Roy number two is out, too. That came out.
- 1:18:47Tad Eggleston: A couple weeks ago, yeah.
- 1:18:48Tad Eggleston: So good.
- 1:18:49Tyler Johnson: I think I got it last week. It was a couple weeks? Okay.
- 1:18:53Tad Eggleston: Well.
- 1:18:53Tyler Johnson: It doesn't matter.
- 1:18:54Tad Eggleston: It wasn't this past Wednesday. It was the Wednesday before that. It was two Wednesdays ago.
- 1:18:59Tyler Johnson: Two Wednesdays. Yep. Okay. All right, guys. Thanks for listening, and we will catch you guys after the next page. Later.
- 1:19:08Tad Eggleston: Op.
- 1:19:09Tad Eggleston: Is he going to make it? Oh, God.
- 1:19:12Phil: God.
