- 0:00Speaker 1: So it looks like looks like police will miss the
- 0:03Speaker 1: deadline of adding five hundred extra sworn officers. What we
- 0:07Speaker 1: were promised should take two years will now in fact
- 0:10Speaker 1: more likely, according to the top brass scrutiny week in
- 0:13Speaker 1: Parliament this week, take two and a half years. So
- 0:15Speaker 1: an extra six months. Will anyone really care? Probably not.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Should we care? Well, when there are more bad guys
- 0:23Speaker 1: out there doing bad things, we should always care about
- 0:25Speaker 1: how many good guys and girls we have out there
- 0:28Speaker 1: encountering that. But on this particular point of missing a
- 0:31Speaker 1: target by one hundred and eighty odd days, not really why.
- 0:35Speaker 1: One the target was always described as highly ambitious and
- 0:39Speaker 1: that should be a clue from a politician. Two they
- 0:42Speaker 1: may still make the deadline. I mean that has not
- 0:44Speaker 1: been discounted at this point and they are working hard
- 0:46Speaker 1: to do that. Three, it was only a target because
- 0:49Speaker 1: it was included in a coalition agreement with New Zealand. First,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and clearly, if you follow the public comments of Mark
- 0:55Speaker 1: Mitchell through the past year, even National has been skeptical
- 0:58Speaker 1: about the timing of it. And most importantly, not hitting
- 1:02Speaker 1: five hundred by November next year doesn't mean that we'll
- 1:06Speaker 1: have zero extra cops on the beat by that date.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It means we'll probably have a few hundred extra, with
- 1:13Speaker 1: more coming in mid twenty twenty six. The most reassuring
- 1:16Speaker 1: thing about this whole debarcle were the words from the
- 1:19Speaker 1: new Commissioner, Richard Chambers yesterday, who said, we are not
- 1:23Speaker 1: going to compromise. So if it takes us a little
- 1:26Speaker 1: bit of time to produce the best quality officers, then
- 1:30Speaker 1: we'll take that, and is right, of course, of course
- 1:33Speaker 1: he's right, because we need five hundred good cops, five
- 1:36Speaker 1: hundred great cops, five hundred excellent cops, well trained and
- 1:40Speaker 1: well resourced, not five hundred average cops. For more from
