Latest / The Catholic Current / LTACL: Is Pride Still a Sin? (Fr. Robert McTeigue, S.J.)
Transcript
- 0:00I can't believe I'm asking this, but I gotta. It's the world we live in.
- 0:03I'm asking, is pride still a
- 0:07sin? Now, some people who know a little bit
- 0:11about grammar and things like homonyms, words that sound the same but
- 0:15mean something different, you talk about, well, no, there's taking pride in one's work,
- 0:18taking pride in one's appearance. But that's not the kind of pride I'm
- 0:23talking about. I'm talking about the pride that gets people
- 0:26killed, that gets people damned.
- 0:31Is that still a sin? Hey Father, can you be more specific?
- 0:35Yes, I can. Stay with me, I've got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit
- 0:38Father Robert McTeague, your host here every day at The Catholic Current, coming to you
- 0:42from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer
- 0:46look. Glad you're here. Here's the most vivid example I
- 0:49can give of The pride that gets people
- 0:53killed, the pride that gets people damned. There's a road rage incident.
- 0:57Picture this. You're pulling up at a red light and the guy in
- 1:00the car in front of you jumps out and he's waving a gun overhead and
- 1:04he yells to the whole crowd, anyone who can hear him, he yells,
- 1:07me first!
- 1:11Me always first! And then
- 1:14waves the gun around and then gets in the car and drives through
- 1:18the red light. That's the kind of pride that'll get
- 1:21you killed. But why would it get you damned? Well,
- 1:26the classical tradition on the 7 deadly sins— and this is
- 1:29the 7th one we're talking about, thank you for sticking with us all this time—
- 1:33pride is the worst of the sins because it involves a full-scale
- 1:36inversion of reality. If sanity is ordering
- 1:40your life in harmony with what's real,
- 1:44the sane person says God is God. I'm not
- 1:48God, and I must act accordingly. And a man both
- 1:52fallen and wise would say, God is all holy, and I am
- 1:56not holy, and therefore I'm not pleasing to God,
- 2:01and I must be reconciled with God. And if
- 2:05we're humble, if we're committed to telling the truth, then sanity
- 2:09would also say getting right with God is
- 2:12a task beyond my own powers. I can only
- 2:15be right with God if I cooperate with God's
- 2:19initiative. And someone who's both sane
- 2:23and wise and humble will be well disposed to hearing the gospel
- 2:27from Christ our Lord. So you see, pride is delusional, it's spiteful,
- 2:32and above all, it's bitter. At its root, it declares,
- 2:36I don't want God to be God. I want anything
- 2:40other than God to be God. I want him to be God. I want her
- 2:44to be God. I want the snake to be God. I want the golden calf
- 2:47to be God. I want the government to be God. I want anything to be
- 2:50God but God himself. And pride
- 2:55is arrogant. It arrogates to itself. It presumptuously
- 2:59attributes to oneself the status,
- 3:02rights, and merits another. You know, we talk about guys who
- 3:07never served in the military wearing uniforms and medals
- 3:11and so on, and we call it stolen valor.
- 3:15Well, that's what pride is. It's stolen valor.
- 3:19It's stolen honor. It's stolen glory.
- 3:23All things that belong properly
- 3:27to God. And to attribute divinity to a creature
- 3:32would be ridiculous if it weren't so dangerous.
- 3:35Well, how dangerous is it? Well, listen to this, uh, from Saint
- 3:39Marian Borodi, who was Carmelite mystic and stigmatist.
- 3:43Her name— her religious life was Sister Mary of Jesus
- 3:47Crucified. She describes pride this way: the proud
- 3:51person is like a grain of wheat thrown into water.
- 3:54It swells, it gets big, Expose that grain
- 3:58to the fire, it dries up, it burns. The humble
- 4:02soul is like a grain of wheat thrown into the earth.
- 4:07It descends, it hides itself, it disappears,
- 4:11it dies, but to revive in heaven.
- 4:14So says Sister Mary of Jesus Crucified.
- 4:18What's the moral of the story for us? Humility is rooted
- 4:22in telling the truth. Humility doesn't really mean being
- 4:26dishonest about our talents and our abilities.
- 4:29If Tiger Woods said, I'm a lousy golfer, that doesn't make him
- 4:33humble. It just makes him a very poor liar. Humility is
- 4:37rooted in telling the truth. The truth is God
- 4:42is good and I am not. The truth is God
- 4:46is great and I am not. The truth is God is holy
- 4:50and I am not. And my
- 4:54vocation, my destiny, is to face God,
- 4:58live, and be in union with him forever in heaven.
- 5:02And that can happen only if I am conformed
- 5:06to him, only if my will is united
- 5:11with his. And I can't do that on my
- 5:15own. Someone has to reconcile me
- 5:19to God, which is an infinite act. So I'm going
- 5:23to need a Savior who is both human and divine,
- 5:27and I'm going to need grace to live moment
- 5:31by moment, to resist sin, to repent sin,
- 5:35to atone for sin, to make reparation for sin,
- 5:39so that I can see the face of
- 5:44God and live when I finally run out of time and into
- 5:48eternity. I have to admit
- 5:51all those things as being true in humility,
- 5:55including the truth that I am a sinner, including the truth
- 5:59that I am a Catholic— I'm a member of the Catholic cadre of the People
- 6:01Who Should Know Better club. I have to admit all of
- 6:05that and throw myself at God's feet and ask for his mercy,
- 6:09to ask to be washed clean in the blood of his Son, to be washed
- 6:13white in the blood of the Lamb. Saint John Climacus
- 6:18gives us hope, and he gives us a warning. He says humility
- 6:22is the only thing that no devil can imitate.
- 6:28Humility for the proud is our best friend,
- 6:31just as sobriety is the best friend of the
- 6:35addict. Let's pray for the grace of humility.
- 6:39Let's pray for the grace of truth. Let's pray for the grace of
- 6:43gratitude. Let's face Christ our
- 6:46Lord someday and say, Lord, you did not shed
- 6:49your blood for me in vain. I saw
- 6:53what I needed, I saw what you offered me, and with your help,
- 6:57I acted accordingly. I want to thank
- 7:01you all for sticking with me through all 7 videos having to do with the
- 7:047 deadly sins. I like making videos based on
- 7:07series of topics. That helps me to plan accordingly.
- 7:11So if there's a series of topics that you want me to cover next,
