Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15All right, we have reached the end of the book of Ephesians.
- 0:19Today we're looking at Ephesians chapter 6 and verses 10 through
- 0:2224. Verses 21 through 24 are just
- 0:25kind of the final goodbye. Tell everyone I said hi, here's
- 0:30who's bringing you this letter. Love you guys, stay in the
- 0:36faith. Like that's kind of that ending
- 0:38thing. So versus 10 through 20 are
- 0:41going to be what we're looking at.
- 0:42I'm going to include in here. I preached a message probably 4
- 0:48years ago, maybe 5 from I think it was four years ago, from
- 0:53verses 18 through 20 about prayer and specifically about
- 0:59praying for the gospel and missions work.
- 1:03And so I hope that'll be an encouragement to you if you take
- 1:06a listen to that or watch that. That's on both podcasts, the
- 1:11Moses Lake Baptist Church Sermon podcast, as well as on YouTube.
- 1:17So sending both of those y'all's way.
- 1:21As we look at the end of the book of Ephesians, Paul makes it
- 1:25really clear to the church he's he's told him a lot.
- 1:29He's told them all about the gospel, about the Gospels,
- 1:31implications, about who planned out the gospel from all the
- 1:34eternity past, who purchased it, who applied it, who sealed it,
- 1:39what it means for our relationships with people from
- 1:42other nations and other ethnicities, even other kind of
- 1:46religious backgrounds. What the gospel means for our
- 1:50future and what it means for our relationship with God right now.
- 1:53And then how that flows into how we treat others, how we
- 1:58evangelize, what we think of the church and our marriages and our
- 2:03homes and our workplaces. All of that is affected by the
- 2:08gospel, That is, that we were created by God for a
- 2:14relationship with Him, and we did not walk in that
- 2:17relationship. Instead, we rejected God and we
- 2:21pursued instead the character traits and life that was totally
- 2:26apart from what He designed us for, which was to show Him, to
- 2:30image Him out to all of creation.
- 2:34As a result of that, we were separated from Him.
- 2:37We were headed to death and destruction and condemnation.
- 2:41But God loved us so much that He pursued us in the person of
- 2:45Jesus Christ. And Jesus died in our place.
- 2:49He died for our sins. He rescued us from being
- 2:55citizens of the Kingdom of darkness under the control of
- 2:59Satan and this world system. And he placed us into the
- 3:03Kingdom of God that we are completely forgiven freely,
- 3:08forever, and we are called to walk in the new life, in the
- 3:13kind of life that is like the character and actions and words
- 3:18of our God. And so as a result, we are saved
- 3:23forever and there is no condemnation that we fear.
- 3:26Instead, we can anticipate both now and forever being loved and
- 3:31accepted and equipped and adored by our God for now and all of
- 3:38eternity. And so we are called then to
- 3:41treat others in that same way. We walk in holiness.
- 3:44We walk in the character of God and we encourage others to as
- 3:49well. We let people know about the
- 3:51rescue that is found in Jesus Christ.
- 3:54All of that is what we are called to do.
- 3:57That is the gospel message that Christ Jesus died to save
- 4:02sinners. And as we recognize that our
- 4:07world is not friendly to that message for a number of reasons,
- 4:13but our world doesn't like the gospel message.
- 4:15And so here in the 1st century in Ephesus, Paul knew this and
- 4:20some of the people that were in this church at Ephesus knew
- 4:23this, and they had been persecuted for their faith.
- 4:26The temptation would be to be angry and resentful and even
- 4:35wanting to pursue violence against those that were harming
- 4:40Christians as a result of their faith in Jesus.
- 4:44And Paul tells them, no, the people that you are
- 4:48encountering, they are not your enemy.
- 4:51Yes, they are doing you wrong. They are refusing to, you know,
- 4:57continue employing you. They will not buy your goods.
- 5:01They, you know, they rile up crowds against you.
- 5:07Even as we read that happening in Ephesus when Paul was there
- 5:11planting the church, he says, yes, they do all of these
- 5:15things, but they are not the enemy.
- 5:18People are not the enemy. Satan and his forces are the
- 5:24enemy, and the way that you fight Satan and his forces is
- 5:28not through hurting, harming, imprisoning, finding people.
- 5:33That doesn't do anything to Satan.
- 5:35What does something to Satan is when you win other people to
- 5:40Jesus. When you show them what God is
- 5:43like, that you don't retaliate, You don't give back evil for
- 5:47evil, but instead you show them what Jesus is like and how he
- 5:52has treated you. That destroys the power of
- 5:56Satan, that he loses citizen after citizen after citizen of
- 6:01this world, and he loses the battle for the souls of mankind
- 6:06when when we walk in the Holy Spirit armed with spiritual
- 6:12armor. So we're going to look at that
- 6:14today. And I've given you kind of all
- 6:16of the background stuff. That way as we're going through,
- 6:20you can be on the same page and you can understand, OK, why is
- 6:23he talking about spiritual armor?
- 6:25Am I supposed to be fighting against someone as a Christian?
- 6:29Yes, you are, but not physically.
- 6:32And one thing that I want to warn against that I hear a lot
- 6:36of these days from kind of the Christian nationalist crowd is
- 6:40that, you know, some particular political party or some
- 6:45particular elected official is demonic and evil and they need
- 6:51to be taken down and this and that.
- 6:54And the truth is it will not happen through worldly means.
- 6:59You can vote in whoever you want to vote in, and Satan in his
- 7:03Kingdom will be just fine. He's not scared of legislation.
- 7:07He's not scared of political candidates.
- 7:10He's not scared of whatever means human means that we think
- 7:16will counter him. No, he is, however, afraid of
- 7:20the gospel. He's afraid of Jesus.
- 7:22He's afraid of the Holy Spirit indwelling you and I.
- 7:26And so, as we in the strength of the Holy Spirit wage spiritual
- 7:31warfare, Satan will be beaten time and time and time again,
- 7:38not because you or I do anything great, but because our God is
- 7:42great. So let's read through and we'll
- 7:45see what we have for today. Verse #10 Finally, be
- 7:49strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength.
- 7:54In a time where we can be weak, we can be discouraged, we can be
- 7:58disheartened, we can wonder if we need to give up.
- 8:02We need to be strengthened by the Lord.
- 8:04And God has strength and enough to spare so that you can get
- 8:09through today, that you can get through this next hour because
- 8:13your God is good to you. Verse #11 As you're being
- 8:17strengthened, put on the full armor of God so that you can
- 8:21stand against the schemes of the devil.
- 8:25He has tricks and plans that he wants to bring to fruition, but
- 8:30you can stand against them and notice here his schemes are
- 8:33against you. So often as we think about the
- 8:39devil working, we think about tragedies of mass shootings, we
- 8:47can think about, you know, legislative actions that don't
- 8:51align with the word of God. I'm like, man, the devil's
- 8:53really in that. And we sometimes shortcut.
- 8:57Satan has a plan for you today. He has schemes of what He wants
- 9:03you to do, ways that He wants you to treat people, words that
- 9:06He wants you to use, attitudes he wants you to cop.
- 9:11All of that are Satan's plans for your day today.
- 9:14But God has a plan too. And God's plan is you got to go
- 9:18to battle. And so you need to put on the
- 9:21armor. Verse #12 For our struggle is
- 9:23not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
- 9:26authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against
- 9:30evil spiritual forces in the heavens.
- 9:34So we're not fighting against people.
- 9:36People are the point. We fight against Satan and the
- 9:40demons, the rulers and authorities, the evil spiritual
- 9:43forces in the heavens. That is the realm of the
- 9:46spiritual beings. Verse 13.
- 9:48For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you
- 9:52may be able to resist in the evil day.
- 9:56And having prepared everything to take your stand.
- 10:00Satan wants to knock you down. Satan wants to defeat you.
- 10:02He wants you to retreat. But you can.
- 10:05In the full armor of God, strengthened by the Lord and his
- 10:08vast strength, you can resist him and you can stand up against
- 10:14the onslaught of Satan. Verse 14 Stand there for with
- 10:19truth, like a belt around your waist, that truth holds
- 10:23everything together in this armor.
- 10:25Don't think like medieval soldiers here.
- 10:30Think I'm going to use some probably anachronistic terms to
- 10:35try and make it a little bit easier for us to understand.
- 10:39Even for myself. You'd have more of a toga type
- 10:44thing that you would be wearing and the belt of truth.
- 10:48It would hold all of the various pieces of the armor together,
- 10:53that none of it would, you know, be clinking around, but that it
- 10:56would be tight, that it would provide full protection for the
- 11:00child of God. Truth, specifically the truth of
- 11:04God's Word, is the thing that holds our entire spiritual life
- 11:08together. If you want to be safe
- 11:12spiritually, it it begins here with knowing the truth of God's
- 11:17word. If you believe lies, you will
- 11:20either take actions or say words or tell people something is the
- 11:24gospel that is not the gospel. And so it is so important to
- 11:28have truth be the foundation of your spiritual armor.
- 11:33That's why I encourage people start the day with the word of
- 11:36God and whether that's listening to something, you know,
- 11:39Tabernacle talk, you can listen to that or any number of other
- 11:43Bible study podcast that there are.
- 11:45You can listen to sermons if you want sermon recommendations.
- 11:49I've got some great friends even just here in the Baltimore area
- 11:53that I would love to encourage you to be listening to their
- 11:57sermons. And you can just pick, you know,
- 11:581 sermon a day that you're listening to and I promise you,
- 12:04you will be girded with truth. You will have truth be they are
- 12:09holding everything together in your life as a result.
- 12:12So stand with truth like a belt around your waist.
- 12:14It's the foundation of everything righteousness like
- 12:17armor on your chest. That is the good actions, right?
- 12:22Standing with God and with man is the protector that you have
- 12:29in a fight against Satan, because if you are not in good
- 12:32relationship with God, you're not in good standing with Him
- 12:35that you are holding on to sin in defiance of Him.
- 12:39You're not asking for His help in in trying to fight sin, but
- 12:43instead you are rebelling against him.
- 12:46You are going to be in spiritual danger.
- 12:49Satan is already winning on that front in your life.
- 12:53So you need that right standing with God, that righteousness
- 12:56that comes again through reliance on the Holy Spirit.
- 12:59It comes through the Lord's work in you.
- 13:01It's not just a, you know, lace up your bootstraps and do
- 13:03better. No, it comes through that, but
- 13:05you have to have a willingness to allow the Holy Spirit to call
- 13:10the shots. So both there your relationship
- 13:14with God and your relationship with man, right?
- 13:16Standing with people that if you are at odds with another person
- 13:22and there is anger, there's gossip, there's arguments,
- 13:27there's this or that that's going on in that relationship,
- 13:30that is a very easy spot for Satan to get into your life.
- 13:35And he can and he can help there be bitterness that then spills
- 13:39out on to everyone else. Don't allow for that.
- 13:42So when you have an importance that's placed on, I'm going to
- 13:45do right by God and by people today, man that protects that
- 13:50core of who you are, if you will, your your spiritual chest
- 13:54is protected by this armor on your chest.
- 13:58And then verse 15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the
- 14:02gospel of peace that you need to do some running.
- 14:05There's a place that you need to get to and you don't want to get
- 14:09tripped up. You don't want to if you will
- 14:13get your foot scraped up here. No, you need to be ready to
- 14:17share the gospel of peace that everywhere you walk, you are
- 14:22carrying the gospel with you, if you will, the gospels on your
- 14:25feet. And so your feet are sandaled
- 14:27with that. And so everywhere that you walk,
- 14:30the gospel is going with you. Is that the way that you view
- 14:33your life or is it OK? Well, maybe if the church has an
- 14:37evangelism activity, that's where I can share the gospel.
- 14:42But when I go to Weiss, when I go to this restaurant, I'm not
- 14:48really putting on the sandals. I'm not carrying the gospel with
- 14:52me in that circumstance. No, Carry the gospel with you
- 14:56wherever you go. It's why very often people are
- 14:59encouraged, bring along a gospel tract or a church invite or
- 15:02something with you. That way you can even in just a
- 15:05simple little way, be able to share the gospel.
- 15:09Should God give you the opportunity to be able to
- 15:12interact with someone who might be encouraged, who might need
- 15:15that gospel summer 16 In every situation, take up the shield of
- 15:21faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming
- 15:25arrows of the evil. 1 Your faith, that belief that God will
- 15:30accomplish what he has said that he will, that can stop every
- 15:35attack of Satan that he brings against you and I Satan wants
- 15:39you to say God is not good, he's not faithful to his word, and so
- 15:44you cannot trust him. That's what Satan is
- 15:47consistently going to tempt you with in relation to your God.
- 15:50And faith says no Satan, you're lying.
- 15:53I believe as God told me this in His word and so I'm going to do
- 15:58it. You're telling me that I should
- 16:01be scared to forgive because then I will be taken advantage
- 16:05of or right, right relationship, righteousness will not happen.
- 16:10But I believe that God says I'm to be kind to others and to
- 16:15forgive them, just like Christ forgave me.
- 16:17And because God says He will, you know, he'll even the score
- 16:24in the end. He's the one that is the God of
- 16:27a good vengeance. He's the one that will right all
- 16:30wrongs. I'm going to trust that if I
- 16:32forgive, it's going to be OK. And so I extinguish the lie of
- 16:36Satan through the shield of faith.
- 16:39The shield of faith, if you will.
- 16:41It works best when you have the belt of truth that you know what
- 16:47God has said. That way you can believe it and
- 16:50you can trust in it. More could be said, but I think
- 16:53that'll suffice for now. Verse 17, Take the helmet of
- 16:56salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
- 17:00here. This helmet of salvation.
- 17:01Salvation is the thing that you need.
- 17:04Otherwise you're going to get shot in the head and you are
- 17:06going to, if you will die spiritually, you, you have to
- 17:10know that you are saved. How do I know that I'm safe?
- 17:14Well, do you believe that Jesus died in your place for your
- 17:19sins, that he was buried and that he rose again, and that
- 17:23whoever calls on him as their Lord will be saved?
- 17:26Do you believe that? Then?
- 17:28Yes, you, you are saved. Especially for those that have
- 17:34made Jesus their Lord. They have repented of sin and
- 17:37turned to Jesus as their Savior, as their Lord.
- 17:40That is a person that is saved. It's not the person that has
- 17:45accomplished all the good works. It's not a person that has been
- 17:48in church for some length of time or went through, you know,
- 17:51a 10 step class. No, it is those that have
- 17:54repented of their sin and believed in Jesus and what He
- 17:57accomplished on the cross, paying our sin debt in full.
- 18:02That is those who are saved. So we take the helmet of
- 18:05salvation, and we take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word
- 18:11of God. How does the Spirit attack
- 18:14Satan? He attacks through the work.
- 18:15Look, if you will, at the temptation of Jesus, that every
- 18:18time Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus responded with Scripture that
- 18:23Satan says, all right, you're really hungry.
- 18:25You've been out here for 40 days in the wilderness fasting.
- 18:28Tell these stones to be made into bread.
- 18:30If you're God, you can do that. Jesus says man shall not live by
- 18:34bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth
- 18:36of God. They're quoting from
- 18:37Deuteronomy. Satan takes him on to the temple
- 18:41and is like, hey, threw yourself off of here.
- 18:44Psalm 91 says that the angels will protect you so that you
- 18:47don't even whack your foot against a stone, and so God will
- 18:51take care of you. And Jesus responds with, you
- 18:53shall not tempt the Lord your God.
- 18:55They're quoting again from the Torah, from the first five books
- 18:58of Scripture. And then Satan shows them all
- 19:01the kingdoms of the world. And he's like, if you bow down
- 19:03and worship me, you can have all of this.
- 19:05You don't have to go through the cross.
- 19:07And Jesus says that you shall worship the Lord your God only,
- 19:12and him only shall you serve. And there again, quoting from
- 19:15Scripture, Jesus in the fight against Satan didn't even assert
- 19:18just his own authority or his own rightness, though he
- 19:20certainly could have done that. He used the sword of the Spirit.
- 19:23And so that's what we're called to as well.
- 19:25If you don't know the Word of God, you cannot win against
- 19:28Satan. That's just the simple truth of
- 19:31the Word of God. If you want to fight against
- 19:33Him, you need to know the Bible verse #18 pray at all times in
- 19:40the Spirit with every prayer and request.
- 19:42That is recognizing who God is. God indwells you, He lives in
- 19:47you, in the person of the Holy Spirit, and so recognizing Him
- 19:51and His Holiness, you bring things to the Father, and you
- 19:55stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the
- 19:59Saints. That you care about your
- 20:01brothers and sisters in the Lord, and you keep on praying
- 20:04for them, and you keep praying for their needs and for their
- 20:07difficult circumstances and for the loss that they are praying
- 20:10for. May we consistently pray for
- 20:14each other as Christians. Verse #19 Pray also for me that
- 20:19the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make
- 20:22known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.
- 20:25Here Paul asked for a personal prayer request.
- 20:27He says, as you're praying in the Spirit, you're praying for
- 20:30your brothers and sisters. He says, pray for me that God
- 20:32would give me the words to speak the message that I need to be
- 20:37preaching as I am declaring the gospel the word of God.
- 20:41And I'll tell you guys, please always be in prayer for me and
- 20:45for whoever your pastors, as your elders are at your church,
- 20:49pray that God would give them the words that they need to say.
- 20:53And then if you're praying for it, anticipate, act like
- 20:58whatever you know, I bring on a Sunday or whatever your pastor
- 21:01brings, that it is what God wants you and your church family
- 21:06to hear. Be grateful for it.
- 21:08Express gratitude. But I, I need prayers more than
- 21:12anything else. Brian's got basically nothing
- 21:15useful to say. Jesus has a whole lot of useful
- 21:19stuff to say. And so I want to declare what
- 21:21Jesus has. I don't just want to spit out my
- 21:24thoughts. I want to say what the word of
- 21:28God says and what the Holy Spirit would have me to say for
- 21:31my context. Verse #20 He says for this, for
- 21:34the gospel, I am an ambassador in chains from the Kingdom of
- 21:37heaven there to the Kingdom of Rome.
- 21:39He says, pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as
- 21:43I should. Pray that God would give me the
- 21:44courage, the boldness to be able to say the gospel even when
- 21:48there are consequences for it. And I definitely echo that
- 21:52prayer request. Then as he ends, he says, take a
- 21:55kiss. Our dearly loved brother and
- 21:57faithful servant in the Lord will tell you all the news about
- 21:59me so that you may be informed. To kiss would be the one that
- 22:02would bring the letter from Paul to hear this church at Ephesus.
- 22:07He says, I'm sending him to you for this very reason, to let you
- 22:09know how we are and to encourage your hearts that he would both
- 22:12bring the letter. He would give some explanations
- 22:15of it and then he would let the Ephesian church know how Paul's
- 22:18doing. Verse 23 peace to the brothers
- 22:20and sisters and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord
- 22:25Jesus Christ that we experience peace, calmness and troubled
- 22:28circumstances. We experience love and faith,
- 22:31confidence in that God will accomplish what he has said he
- 22:33would and from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ and
- 22:37then verse 24 ending the book grace be with all who have
- 22:41undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 22:44He says keep on going, God's grace, his empowerment, His gift
- 22:49to you of his incredible riches at Christ's expense.
- 22:53He will give you his grace, His strength to go through each
- 22:55moment. Keep on loving Jesus and I'll
- 22:58tell you guys that as well. So we end the book of Ephesians
- 23:02realize that God is for you. He wants to strengthen you.
- 23:04He wants to give you peace and love and faith and grace.
- 23:07He has given you salvation. He wants to help you be in right
- 23:09relationship with others so that you can defeat Satan, that you
- 23:13can encourage your brothers and sisters, and that you can make
- 23:15new disciples of Jesus. Thanks for tuning in and looking
- 23:19forward to the next episode.
