Transcript
- 0:00And we're live.
- 0:01What's going on?
- 0:03It is Scott and Tristan.
- 0:05We are chopping it up with
- 0:06Coach Krispy Kreme.
- 0:08We still don't have any
- 0:09bumpers for this show yet,
- 0:11but we'll get there.
- 0:12We'll get there.
- 0:13It's in the middle of like
- 0:14the busiest season.
- 0:16This company does every year
- 0:19trying to interview as many
- 0:21semifinalists as possible.
- 0:23Um,
- 0:25and of course with the compressed season,
- 0:27they don't give us a lot of time.
- 0:28So it has been one thing after another,
- 0:31but I get to hang out with
- 0:32my friend Tristan.
- 0:33What's going on, brother?
- 0:35Not much, man.
- 0:36Busy, busy as well.
- 0:38The compressed season does,
- 0:40does make it a wild time of the year.
- 0:42Yeah,
- 0:43not only do we have to interview
- 0:44everybody,
- 0:45we have to watch the stuff so
- 0:47that we can talk about it
- 0:49and stay educated on everything.
- 0:51Then I go on this game show
- 0:54and I keep winning.
- 0:55Yesterday I thought I was a dud.
- 0:57Did you win?
- 0:58And I won.
- 0:58And now I'm going on to the finals.
- 1:01Let's go.
- 1:01Dude,
- 1:02I was sick as a dog yesterday during
- 1:04that half hour.
- 1:07Couldn't remember words, couldn't remember,
- 1:08you know.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:10And somehow, I think the six was in.
- 1:14I gave Peter just enough
- 1:15money to get him to the top.
- 1:19Yeah.
- 1:20That's why I didn't win the
- 1:21finals this week.
- 1:23Oh, it's this week?
- 1:25This coming week.
- 1:26Oh, this coming week.
- 1:27Okay.
- 1:28Yeah.
- 1:29Against Colton and Kiefer.
- 1:31Ooh, tough crowd.
- 1:35Yeah,
- 1:35definitely not going to be the most
- 1:36popular guy in the joint there.
- 1:41I think you could take him.
- 1:43I think you could take him.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:46I mean, Colton can throw some haymakers,
- 1:48man.
- 1:49He can.
- 1:50So can Kiefer.
- 1:51Like, it's going to be heavy hitters week.
- 1:54Does he give you the points
- 1:57y'all are going to talk about in advance,
- 1:59like a day or anything like that?
- 2:02Usually the evening before.
- 2:04Okay.
- 2:05But this week,
- 2:07he gave them to us the evening before.
- 2:09Then his wife had a baby.
- 2:11So we had to wait an extra 24 hours.
- 2:15Gotcha.
- 2:16Yeah.
- 2:17That's cool, though.
- 2:18That's cool.
- 2:19I need to go back and watch that one.
- 2:20I didn't get to catch that one yesterday.
- 2:23Yeah.
- 2:23I,
- 2:24I was actually in third going into the
- 2:26last question.
- 2:28Wow.
- 2:28So you just dropped a bomb.
- 2:30Well, they asked about media passes.
- 2:33Oh, he gave you a softball.
- 2:35Pretty much like that is all
- 2:39I've been thinking about
- 2:40for the last two weeks.
- 2:41So yeah.
- 2:43Yeah.
- 2:44Are you, uh,
- 2:46is there anything new with that?
- 2:47Are you planning on going anywhere or.
- 2:51I really have to make the
- 2:52decision by tomorrow.
- 2:53I'm not going to West Coast.
- 2:55I did secure a local
- 2:57photographer at West Coast
- 3:00to be able to get us shots
- 3:02of people so that we could
- 3:06post winners of events.
- 3:10Holly's in the chat.
- 3:11Holly can do her leaderboard
- 3:12magic with a little cooler
- 3:14graphics because we'll have
- 3:15pictures live from the event.
- 3:17And then when we do recap shows,
- 3:19we'll have lots of stuff to pull up.
- 3:21Nice.
- 3:22So I've done that for West
- 3:24coast and I've got to make
- 3:25the decision by tomorrow,
- 3:26whether I'm going to Knoxville or not.
- 3:29Well, if you go to Knoxville,
- 3:30I'll see you there.
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:32So, so I mean,
- 3:33some of the people I've
- 3:35gotten to know over the years,
- 3:36like are going to be, and I,
- 3:38this is my favorite time.
- 3:40I was telling Holly today on text,
- 3:42like this is my favorite
- 3:44time of the year.
- 3:44I love semifinals more than the games.
- 3:49Yeah, I could see that.
- 3:50I think, one,
- 3:52we interview all these athletes, right?
- 3:53So I have a clear
- 3:55understanding of who's on the floor.
- 3:57I know people in every heat,
- 3:59and so it makes it a very
- 4:02big rooting thing for me
- 4:06inside because I don't
- 4:06externally do that because
- 4:08I don't want to show favoritism,
- 4:09but you get to know these
- 4:11people and you want them to do well.
- 4:13And then the tension at semis, I think,
- 4:16is much greater than the games.
- 4:21Because so many people's
- 4:23goals are making the games.
- 4:25Yeah.
- 4:26Right.
- 4:27Once you get to the games, there's like,
- 4:31there's like half the field
- 4:32is just glad they're there.
- 4:34Yeah.
- 4:35They're,
- 4:35they're going to maximize their
- 4:37own personal performance,
- 4:38but they're not.
- 4:39And they want to do is, you know,
- 4:40they want to get as far as they can,
- 4:42but it's,
- 4:43they know they're not
- 4:44necessarily vying for a top 10,
- 4:46but with this year with
- 4:48three events on Sunday,
- 4:51And all execution-style events,
- 4:55the tension on Sunday is
- 4:56going to be through the freaking roof.
- 5:00I do enjoy that there is
- 5:01three events on Sunday.
- 5:03From a programming perspective,
- 5:07I think it's cool.
- 5:09I can also say I won't enjoy
- 5:12that when I'm there.
- 5:12Right.
- 5:15But I do think it's kind of
- 5:17cool that they changed it
- 5:18from the traditional 2-2-2
- 5:21You have one big workout
- 5:23Friday for the Indies,
- 5:24and then you get to go home,
- 5:25get it together, come back.
- 5:27You have a pretty big day-ish on Saturday,
- 5:32and then Sunday is like, who wants it?
- 5:36Yeah.
- 5:39I know this was none of the
- 5:40topics we discussed we were
- 5:41going to talk about,
- 5:42but I like just the flow of
- 5:44having the conversation with you.
- 5:47And I'm going to ask you a
- 5:48question about the programming.
- 5:50And I don't want you to, like,
- 5:51this is not about hints, tips, tricks,
- 5:53crap like that.
- 5:55So I had Saxon on Monday.
- 5:57Okay.
- 5:58And he said that the first three tests,
- 6:01so Friday and Saturday,
- 6:02are fitness tests.
- 6:05Straight up fitness tests.
- 6:06One, two, and three.
- 6:07Yeah.
- 6:07Okay.
- 6:08The last three on Sunday are
- 6:10all execution.
- 6:12Four, five.
- 6:16I mean, I see why he would say that.
- 6:18Yeah.
- 6:20There's a baseline
- 6:21prerequisite of fitness to all of them.
- 6:25But I think what he might
- 6:27have been alluding to,
- 6:28if I had to look in deeper, is one, two,
- 6:31and three,
- 6:34you can really make those hurt.
- 6:37like the,
- 6:37the threshold for just discomfort
- 6:40to push your fitness is there.
- 6:44So you can just really dig in, you know,
- 6:46that front squat workout,
- 6:47that run workout, obviously.
- 6:50And for most people, even the legless bike,
- 6:52you know, especially the men, like,
- 6:55are you going to bike three
- 6:56RPMs faster than you want to,
- 6:58or are you going to sandbag
- 7:00this bike and not get the
- 7:01placing you want?
- 7:03And then I think to his point for the,
- 7:07Depending on if we do get a curveball,
- 7:10whatever,
- 7:11probably a little more execution.
- 7:12You definitely have to mind
- 7:13your P's and Q's on the rower.
- 7:15You could overextend there.
- 7:18And then five, of course,
- 7:20is an execution workout.
- 7:23You can afford to miss a snatch,
- 7:25but you really don't want
- 7:26to miss a snatch.
- 7:28And then definitely six is
- 7:31definitely one of those ones where
- 7:36You have to bike the pace
- 7:37that you can bike to do
- 7:39what you need to do on the muscle-ups.
- 7:41And I think potentially 72
- 7:44feet is long enough that –
- 7:48and depending on how they structure it,
- 7:50is it 28s unbroken or 24s
- 7:52or whatever it would be unbroken,
- 7:54we might see some people –
- 7:57not make a distance because
- 7:58they didn't break for a
- 7:59quick break right so I i
- 8:01see what he's saying with
- 8:02that and I would agree with
- 8:02that I think one two and
- 8:05three especially number two
- 8:08and one are very very very
- 8:13metabolic tests like they
- 8:15just you cannot hide your
- 8:18fitness in those workouts
- 8:22yeah especially at race intensity
- 8:25Did you get to watch Europe this morning?
- 8:29Ish.
- 8:31I scrolled through – I
- 8:34listened slash watched to a
- 8:35little bit of the men doing one,
- 8:38and then I kind of scrubbed
- 8:39the video on –
- 8:41the teams for one because
- 8:45Madison and Taylor's team
- 8:46are running through one again today.
- 8:50And I wanted to give them some, Hey,
- 8:52let's do this.
- 8:52Let's try that, et cetera.
- 8:54Learning from some of those
- 8:55teams who have already went.
- 8:57So I'll be flat on it.
- 8:58I've only watched the
- 9:00individual stuff today
- 9:02because I was enamored by
- 9:04the Scotty Scheffler
- 9:05incident at Valhalla this morning.
- 9:07I have no idea.
- 9:09You have no idea.
- 9:09So, you know,
- 9:11he's the number one golfer in the world.
- 9:12Yes.
- 9:14There was an accident
- 9:15outside Valhalla where a tragic accident.
- 9:19A man died.
- 9:20A shuttle bus hit a pedestrian.
- 9:23And so traffic was shut down.
- 9:25Oh, man.
- 9:27scotty scheffler was trying
- 9:28to get into valhalla um he
- 9:32was two cars back of the
- 9:34entrance so he pulled over
- 9:36to the median to pull
- 9:37around the corner to get in
- 9:39a police officer yelled for
- 9:43him to stop his story is he
- 9:45didn't hear him cop yell
- 9:48stop doesn't he the cop
- 9:50attaches himself to the car
- 9:54and starts beating on it
- 9:55with his flashlight
- 9:58asks Scotty to roll down the
- 10:00window he complies he
- 10:03reaches and opens the door
- 10:04pulls Schreffler out cuffs
- 10:07him slams him up against
- 10:09the car and takes him
- 10:11downtown to process him
- 10:14whoa and the more that's
- 10:17coming out from that the
- 10:20worse it's looking that's wild yeah
- 10:25It's like a series of unfortunate events,
- 10:27one on top of another.
- 10:28And what's crazy is Jeff
- 10:30Darlington from ESPN
- 10:32witnessed the entire thing
- 10:34and has cell phone footage
- 10:36of a lot of it.
- 10:39There's always a camera on.
- 10:41And then I can't remember his name.
- 10:46I don't follow golf super closely,
- 10:48but the caddy that's now a reporter.
- 10:51Okay.
- 10:53he was saying that in the
- 10:54locker room other golfers
- 10:56were said they attempted
- 10:57the exact same thing and
- 10:58were given free way to to
- 11:01get into the club to check
- 11:03in conspiracy yeah I love
- 11:08it I love it so so I was
- 11:11kind of like following that
- 11:12a little bit because it was
- 11:14big drama and then but so I
- 11:16watched the individual and
- 11:17and one thing I'm going to
- 11:19ask you is the women there
- 11:21were some that chose to go touch and go
- 11:26others didn't and on the
- 11:27men's side nobody chose to
- 11:29go touch and go does that
- 11:32make sense to you yeah
- 11:34because 155 is lighter for
- 11:36the girls than 185 for the
- 11:37men okay 125 or 125 yeah
- 11:43sorry I was thinking about
- 11:44event too um yeah 125 to 185 is
- 11:49more women can just handle
- 11:51that a little bit better.
- 11:52And it's, there's even, you know,
- 11:55consistency issues within
- 11:56CrossFit zone programming
- 11:57because the men's first bar
- 11:58of the snatch ladder is 185
- 12:00and the women's bar is 135.
- 12:01So like, what are we doing here, guys?
- 12:07So it doesn't,
- 12:07it doesn't surprise me terribly much.
- 12:09I would be curious to see
- 12:10how the women who did
- 12:13uh touch and go like I don't
- 12:14know I know gabby won that
- 12:16event if I'm not mistaken
- 12:18barely did she go touch and
- 12:20go the whole way no yeah
- 12:23see kringle did kringle
- 12:25finished three three
- 12:26seconds behind her wow but
- 12:29kringle had the lead the
- 12:31entire race and gabby got
- 12:33her on the run at the end no gab well i
- 12:39i think gabby got her
- 12:41incrementally like on three
- 12:43four and five on the on the
- 12:44cleans and then it looked
- 12:47really good on the uh like
- 12:50she got her really good on
- 12:51the last run like they came
- 12:52in almost together and they
- 12:56almost picked up the bar at
- 12:57the exact same time gotcha
- 13:01um and kringle and then get
- 13:03at that point gabby said
- 13:04I'm going touch and go
- 13:06Right, right.
- 13:07And Kringle tried and could
- 13:08only do like three, two, two.
- 13:12Yeah.
- 13:13Yeah.
- 13:14Yeah,
- 13:14I don't think it's terribly
- 13:15surprising to see more of
- 13:16the men go very fast
- 13:18singles versus the ladies
- 13:20on that workout.
- 13:22I think you can play to... It's just,
- 13:25I mean, at the end of the day,
- 13:26no matter who wants to say it,
- 13:28it's a running workout.
- 13:30So if the touch and go...
- 13:33if touch and go impacts your running,
- 13:36it's just not worth it.
- 13:36Cause you're going to lose more time.
- 13:41I was surprised.
- 13:42Like you have to be able to,
- 13:44you have to be able to
- 13:45manage that clean and jerk.
- 13:47Right.
- 13:47Is what became obvious to me today.
- 13:50Yes.
- 13:51You have to manage it so
- 13:53that your runs don't suffer.
- 13:55Right.
- 13:57Now that is where you're
- 13:59running outside in a big loop and,
- 14:02and not doing, as Corey's putting it,
- 14:05the DMV Disney line like
- 14:08they did in Asia.
- 14:10Yeah, I saw that.
- 14:13So if you're forced to do that,
- 14:14it's a completely different
- 14:15event with all the zigs and
- 14:17the zags because you're
- 14:19never even going to get to top speed.
- 14:21Yeah,
- 14:22you're never going to stride out your
- 14:23run and really settle in.
- 14:25So it does change it where
- 14:27you might want to try to do
- 14:28some touch and go to get
- 14:29out ahead of somebody
- 14:30before you get back out on the run.
- 14:36I know that you're going
- 14:38into a weekend where you're
- 14:39going to be coaching,
- 14:40so I didn't want to talk
- 14:41about that a bunch,
- 14:42but I just have a couple
- 14:43observations about that.
- 14:46You've got Jacob this weekend coming up.
- 14:50You've got Madison and her team.
- 14:53And then...
- 15:00So we have one of our coaches at Ascend,
- 15:03Carrie Tobias.
- 15:05She is on a team.
- 15:06Well, she owns a gym, Man Made CrossFit,
- 15:08up in Cypress, greater Houston area.
- 15:12She has a team that she is
- 15:13on from that gym.
- 15:14And then I have a guy that I
- 15:17coach who's on another team
- 15:19from that gym.
- 15:20So they have two teams from that gym.
- 15:22And they're...
- 15:24more or less ascend teams
- 15:26with her being one of our coaches.
- 15:27They do a good bit of our programming.
- 15:29They all train at the affiliate as well.
- 15:31So it's kind of a hodgepodge.
- 15:33Um,
- 15:34but I'll be there to assist them as well.
- 15:37So in essence,
- 15:40three ish teams and then two
- 15:43individuals in the West.
- 15:46Yeah.
- 15:49As,
- 15:49as a person who's gotten to know Hattie
- 15:50over the,
- 15:52I love these workouts for Hattie.
- 15:54Me too, brother.
- 15:57She came and tested like she
- 16:01tested a couple in full.
- 16:02We did some interval
- 16:03variations of a couple and I'm excited.
- 16:09Corey Leonard asks, Tristan,
- 16:10where's your box?
- 16:12So the gym that I coach out
- 16:15of is CrossFit Greater Heights in Houston,
- 16:20Texas.
- 16:20So my fiance and I also go
- 16:23to a gym down in Dickinson, Texas,
- 16:27which is Greater Houston area,
- 16:28closer to where we live,
- 16:30called CrossFit Kima.
- 16:33So we bounce around a little bit.
- 16:39So we talked to Jacob yesterday.
- 16:40You happy for his,
- 16:44his chances with these workouts?
- 16:47Yeah, I'm, I'm excited for Jacob.
- 16:49I think there's a,
- 16:50a good portion of the
- 16:51events that he can really go compete on,
- 16:54um, that favor his abilities.
- 16:58You know, he's not a,
- 17:01I wouldn't say he's a fully
- 17:02mature games athlete at
- 17:05this point by any stretch.
- 17:06Um,
- 17:07But I'm really proud of the
- 17:09progress he's made in his
- 17:10fitness this last year.
- 17:11You interviewed him yesterday.
- 17:14This was his first year
- 17:19having a job, working, training,
- 17:23being in his garage most of the time.
- 17:25He's a really social athlete.
- 17:26He likes to be around people.
- 17:27That wasn't really an option
- 17:28a lot of the year.
- 17:29He got married.
- 17:31So for him,
- 17:34the improvements we've made on
- 17:35his fitness this year,
- 17:38he improved his placing in
- 17:38quarterfinals drastically.
- 17:41I think we'll improve his
- 17:41placing at semifinals by a good margin.
- 17:44We have a goal we'd like to hit there.
- 17:46And all of that happening in his,
- 17:49I give him a hard time,
- 17:49his first year of really adulting.
- 17:53And doing a lot of adulting, you know,
- 17:54getting married as well.
- 17:56So I'm super proud of him
- 17:57and excited for him to go
- 17:58out and have a good time.
- 18:02Corey wants more specifics.
- 18:04We're in Houston.
- 18:05Everything is 45 minutes
- 18:07away from each other.
- 18:08We travel there a couple
- 18:09times a year and I'd love to drop in.
- 18:11He's right.
- 18:12Everything is 45 minutes away.
- 18:14It's in the Heights.
- 18:15So it's right off like the
- 18:16intersection or not the intersection,
- 18:18but where I 10 turns into I
- 18:2145 and they kind of crisscross.
- 18:23It's just a couple minutes down.
- 18:25I 10 going West.
- 18:26So it's in the Heights.
- 18:28Technically I 10 is my least
- 18:31favorite road in the world.
- 18:34It's not my favorite either.
- 18:35I've driven it a long ways.
- 18:37A lot of different directions.
- 18:39When I lived in Tallahassee, Florida,
- 18:42It was the east-west from
- 18:44Jacksonville to Pensacola.
- 18:47Ugh.
- 18:48Ugh.
- 18:49Yep.
- 18:51I've driven I-10 from El
- 18:52Paso all the way to Houston,
- 18:54and it's 13 hours of nothing.
- 19:00Larry Young.
- 19:00Box you like close to Pearland.
- 19:03Box I like close to Pearland.
- 19:05I don't actually know the
- 19:06Pearland area that well for
- 19:08CrossFit boxes, unfortunately, Larry.
- 19:11Um, is that John,
- 19:13is that John Young's dad?
- 19:16I believe so.
- 19:16Yes.
- 19:17Okay.
- 19:18So I knew, I know John is in the area,
- 19:22but I don't know exactly where, um,
- 19:25but he was at a,
- 19:26I saw him at a local
- 19:27competition in Katie in December.
- 19:32And I loosely gathered that
- 19:34he is somewhere in the area.
- 19:37Uh,
- 19:40Larry, I don't know, but I'll ask around.
- 19:41I'm sure I could put some
- 19:44feelers out there.
- 19:49Oh, he's in the Katy area.
- 19:50Okay, yeah, so he's not far at all.
- 19:57My favorite road sign ever
- 19:59is right across the state line in Texas.
- 20:01It says El Paso, 850 miles.
- 20:04Yeah, Texas is just massive, man.
- 20:09It's funny you say that
- 20:10because I was coming back
- 20:11from Jamie's because we're
- 20:12going to get into age group here.
- 20:14I was coming back from
- 20:15Jamie's in Michigan.
- 20:16Cross the Michigan-Ohio border,
- 20:18and there's a sign on the
- 20:20road that says Atlanta, Georgia,
- 20:231,000 miles.
- 20:26You couldn't pick a closer city first?
- 20:28As I cross into Ohio from Michigan,
- 20:30I'm worried about how far
- 20:31it is to Atlanta.
- 20:321,000 miles?
- 20:32Right.
- 20:36And I think like two exits down,
- 20:38it's like Tampa.
- 20:41Yeah.
- 20:43That's wild.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:46There's probably some engineering reason.
- 20:49Or some guy just going, Hey,
- 20:50let's play a joke.
- 20:51And yeah.
- 20:53Right.
- 20:54Let these people know how
- 20:54far away they are from this
- 20:55other place in the United States.
- 20:58So before we kind of talked
- 21:01about the news of the day, um,
- 21:03news of the week is the age
- 21:05group semis ended on monday
- 21:08night at eight o'clock they
- 21:09did um our friend my friend
- 21:14your athlete jamie latimer
- 21:18have finished in a
- 21:19qualifying spot she did so
- 21:23now you have a two-week
- 21:24wait until the leaderboards are final
- 21:30what happens at this point?
- 21:31Like it's a long break from
- 21:35the end of that until the
- 21:37game start Labor Day weekend.
- 21:42I know Jamie,
- 21:42she's not going to take a rest,
- 21:44but would you,
- 21:46would it be ideal for an
- 21:47athlete to take some time
- 21:49off and let the body heal
- 21:52and get ready for like July?
- 21:57Yeah.
- 21:58Yeah,
- 21:58that would be the ideal kind of
- 22:01recommendation.
- 22:01Hey, take about two weeks.
- 22:04You can train.
- 22:06You can go work out.
- 22:07Obviously, she's an affiliate owner.
- 22:09I know being part of her
- 22:11community is super important.
- 22:13So she and I had a conversation yesterday.
- 22:16I'm going to have some programming in,
- 22:19but I don't want you
- 22:21stressing to get an extra workout.
- 22:22I don't want you stressing
- 22:24to go super hard.
- 22:27I restrict you from lifting
- 22:28anything that feels overly heavy.
- 22:32Do one of my workouts or
- 22:33work out with your classes.
- 22:35Have fun.
- 22:37Don't stress on things for
- 22:38the next two weeks.
- 22:39And then we'll start
- 22:42building up slowly for September.
- 22:48She's been very open that
- 22:50she has a labrum tear.
- 22:54It's not going to heal itself.
- 22:57Just trying to get through
- 22:58the season to get through that.
- 23:00As a coach, how do you approach that?
- 23:06Carefully.
- 23:06I try to give her a good bit
- 23:10of auto-regulation,
- 23:13if we were going to use a coaching term.
- 23:15where she can vary things a
- 23:17little bit based on how her
- 23:18shoulder is feeling,
- 23:19particularly with the
- 23:20movements that tend to
- 23:21aggravate it or the, you know,
- 23:25weights that can aggravate it.
- 23:27So we try to give a little
- 23:29bit of leeway based on how
- 23:30things are feeling that day.
- 23:31Um, of course,
- 23:33if she's worried about something,
- 23:34she can text me and I'll
- 23:36change it really quickly,
- 23:37or we'll just take a
- 23:40a good bit of bodybuilding work,
- 23:42good old fashioned, you know,
- 23:45external rotator strength
- 23:46work and things like that,
- 23:47trying to keep the muscles
- 23:48around it nice and strong.
- 23:50And then also,
- 23:51when we look at preparing for the games,
- 23:54just knowing where that's
- 23:55going to probably impact
- 23:56what we can do on a given
- 23:58movement or a lift or
- 24:00something like that.
- 24:02And, you know,
- 24:03managing around that trying
- 24:04to make it so that we can
- 24:06make our money in other places.
- 24:13there's been a lot of drama
- 24:14this week around the online
- 24:19format of age group, um,
- 24:21the programming of age group,
- 24:24the leak and who should
- 24:26report the leak of age group.
- 24:30Um, your general overall thoughts.
- 24:35What a mess.
- 24:37Um, I I've,
- 24:42I'm very frustrated with just the overall,
- 24:48I guess,
- 24:48state of the union of the online
- 24:50portion of the sport at
- 24:53this point and the, um,
- 24:59security of the workouts
- 25:01and things moving on to the
- 25:03semifinal stage.
- 25:05Um,
- 25:07obviously everybody knows if
- 25:09people get the workouts early,
- 25:11even if they just have the movements,
- 25:13anybody with a decent coach
- 25:15or half a brain can,
- 25:17if you know the movements
- 25:18of a competition,
- 25:20you can potentiate around
- 25:21those movements in a variety of way.
- 25:23If you know the work,
- 25:25the movements two weeks
- 25:26before everybody else.
- 25:27Um,
- 25:28know the said principle
- 25:29specific adaptation to
- 25:30impose demands it's a thing
- 25:32for a reason if I just make
- 25:34people keep doing whatever
- 25:37movements front squats
- 25:38double unders and toe to
- 25:39bar over and over and over
- 25:41and over and over in a
- 25:42variety of ways they're
- 25:44going to get better at that
- 25:46and that's not even talking
- 25:47about moving things one
- 25:48degree of separation and
- 25:49going okay instead of front
- 25:51squats today we're going to do thrusters
- 25:54It's so close to the same stimulus.
- 25:55It's going to improve their performance.
- 25:57So I think as a coach,
- 25:59I'm really frustrated with it.
- 26:03I'm not sure at this point.
- 26:06I'm not really big on placing blame.
- 26:09I think it's better when
- 26:10people just take responsibility.
- 26:11At this point,
- 26:13I think HQ obviously should
- 26:14take responsibility.
- 26:15And I think Dave overall has,
- 26:17especially for the semifinals portion.
- 26:22I don't really know the nuts
- 26:23and bolts of the ins and
- 26:25outs with their
- 26:25relationship with the
- 26:27legends competition for the
- 26:28masters stuff.
- 26:30I think my perspective on it at this point,
- 26:33and I think the only way to
- 26:34really nip it would be, uh,
- 26:36what Halpin known and noble
- 26:38put on his story three, four,
- 26:42maybe five days ago at this point,
- 26:44he basically was making this, the analogy,
- 26:47you should treat the,
- 26:48the workouts like uranium.
- 26:51And, uh,
- 26:52if you have access to those
- 26:53workouts and you do
- 26:55something you're not
- 26:55supposed to do with those
- 26:56workouts for lack of a better term,
- 26:58it could kill you in the CrossFit space.
- 27:01And I think it would be incredibly harsh,
- 27:04but I think if CrossFit had
- 27:08a leak and they found out who leaked it,
- 27:11that person's gone.
- 27:12Who did they leak it to?
- 27:14Okay.
- 27:14Did that person put it out publicly?
- 27:16Cause that's different.
- 27:17If you get them leaked and you blast it,
- 27:20I don't think you should
- 27:21have had access to them,
- 27:22but if you just get them
- 27:23sent to you and then you
- 27:24blast them publicly, I think that's okay.
- 27:26But if you just have the
- 27:27workouts and you didn't put
- 27:29them on your social media,
- 27:30you didn't report it back to CrossFit,
- 27:32you didn't do something
- 27:33with them to get it back to the authority,
- 27:35you're gone.
- 27:36You're out.
- 27:37You're blacklisted.
- 27:38Just like a – I think it
- 27:41should be the same thing as
- 27:42a failed drug test.
- 27:43Four years.
- 27:44You're gone.
- 27:48If there's not going to be
- 27:49any repercussion,
- 27:52then nobody's going to stop doing it.
- 27:57People are going to keep
- 27:58sending the workouts to their friends.
- 27:59People are going to take
- 28:01pictures and try to give
- 28:02their favorite athlete a leg up or this,
- 28:04that, and the other.
- 28:05And I think the best case
- 28:07for that would be for CrossFit.
- 28:09And if an athlete or a coach
- 28:11gets sent those workouts,
- 28:12of course they're going to act on it.
- 28:15So I think the best thing
- 28:16would be a public policy from CrossFit.
- 28:19If you get information that
- 28:21somebody says is for a
- 28:23semifinal stage or a
- 28:24quarterfinal stage or even the Open,
- 28:26screw it,
- 28:27and you don't report that to
- 28:29CrossFit and we find out you had it,
- 28:33you're gone.
- 28:38So my contention has always been,
- 28:41Not always.
- 28:42My contention has been
- 28:43recently that because of all the leaks,
- 28:46maybe the cat's out of the
- 28:48bag and we just can't keep
- 28:50it a secret anymore.
- 28:51Like why is it such a big
- 28:55deal to keep it secret till
- 28:56the last minute?
- 28:58If it's leaking out there,
- 28:59then just put it out there
- 29:01early and let everybody have it.
- 29:03Yeah.
- 29:05Yeah.
- 29:06I don't disagree with that either.
- 29:07I think you almost at this
- 29:08point need to have one of the two, right?
- 29:10You either just put them out early.
- 29:12And just let everybody have them.
- 29:14Or if you're going to play this game,
- 29:18you got to enforce what you want.
- 29:22I mean,
- 29:23I think we cling to things from the
- 29:25past that we love.
- 29:27I mean, in everything we do,
- 29:28not just CrossFit, right?
- 29:30And everybody loved the old
- 29:31open announcements where
- 29:33nobody knew the workout.
- 29:35You know,
- 29:35you gather around your stream at
- 29:388 o'clock on a Thursday
- 29:39night or now 3 o'clock on a...
- 29:42Thursday afternoon.
- 29:42Right.
- 29:43And everybody's waiting with
- 29:44bated breath to see what the workout is.
- 29:47And that,
- 29:48that's like a warm part of your soul,
- 29:51right?
- 29:51That it's old.
- 29:52It's what you're used to.
- 29:53It's what you're comfortable.
- 29:55But with growth,
- 29:56sometimes you lose that
- 29:57intimacy and those little
- 30:00heartwarming moments, right?
- 30:02You know,
- 30:04and that happens in sport across all,
- 30:07all of them, football, baseball.
- 30:09Yeah.
- 30:09Right.
- 30:12i I think we have to like
- 30:14let go of some of those
- 30:15things to progress forward
- 30:18and make it a fair fair's
- 30:21not the right term because
- 30:22everybody just professional
- 30:26it has to be a professional
- 30:27sport right where every
- 30:29athlete has the same
- 30:30opportunity yeah and in
- 30:34this age where you need
- 30:35everything tested by elite athletes
- 30:40they're all so
- 30:41interconnected to keep that
- 30:44circle without enormous
- 30:47litigation to keep that
- 30:49circle tight is nearly impossible now.
- 30:52Yeah.
- 30:53I almost, I agree.
- 30:54I think, you know,
- 30:57I used to love the old open
- 30:58announcements and I mean,
- 31:02it was the best to just go
- 31:03sit and watch and then try
- 31:05to figure out who was going
- 31:05to win and all that.
- 31:06But I don't disagree.
- 31:07I think,
- 31:09as we grow, things need to change.
- 31:10I think, you know, I've said this before,
- 31:13I'm adamantly against
- 31:19online competition at this point.
- 31:20Like I'm fully,
- 31:21my hat is in with Justin Kotler.
- 31:23Whenever we're going to make a circuit,
- 31:24somebody call me I'm in, I want to help.
- 31:26I want to figure it out.
- 31:27Cause this is just, I just think the,
- 31:29I don't think we're ever
- 31:30going to get the online thing.
- 31:31Right.
- 31:32Um,
- 31:33But I do think there's at
- 31:35least some things we could
- 31:36do differently.
- 31:37And I think putting out the
- 31:37workouts a little bit ahead of time,
- 31:39more ahead of time.
- 31:42Cause yeah,
- 31:42to your point with the athletes
- 31:43being so interconnected, I mean,
- 31:45what do you do pay for
- 31:46people to work for CrossFit
- 31:48and their job is to train,
- 31:49to be elite athletes.
- 31:51And then so that they just
- 31:52test the workouts,
- 31:53but they're banned from competing.
- 31:55Right.
- 31:55It's like, like,
- 31:56how do you manage that without crazy,
- 31:58like you said, litigation in DAs and,
- 32:01and this, that, and the other.
- 32:02And it,
- 32:03I don't even, I mean, I don't know.
- 32:06My heart wants to say,
- 32:07I don't think it's the
- 32:08athletes that were testing
- 32:09it that were leaking it,
- 32:09but I don't know.
- 32:12I'm not accusing them of that.
- 32:14Right.
- 32:15It's just,
- 32:16it's just evidence that the
- 32:18circle is getting bigger
- 32:19and bigger and bigger.
- 32:21Yeah.
- 32:21I mean, that means it's,
- 32:24it's less containable, right?
- 32:26If you're a cowboy and
- 32:28you're hurting cattle,
- 32:29if you're hurting 10,
- 32:30it's a lot easier than hurting 50.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:36Yeah.
- 32:36I don't know.
- 32:37It's a really conflict.
- 32:38Like, I feel like as a coach in the space,
- 32:40I have, you know,
- 32:42obviously a handful of
- 32:43thoughts and opinions on
- 32:44how I'd like to see the
- 32:45space improve and blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 32:47blah, and this, that, and the other.
- 32:48And then I obviously have my
- 32:51more coach centric opinions,
- 32:54which are a lot more aggressive.
- 32:56And I, you know, like,
- 33:01For me as a coach, you know,
- 33:02with somebody like Hattie
- 33:03or my teams or whatnot,
- 33:06I don't care that you had
- 33:07the workouts before us.
- 33:09Good.
- 33:10Still going to beat you.
- 33:12Right?
- 33:12Like that mindset difference as, you know,
- 33:16when thinking about the
- 33:17athletes and dealing with
- 33:18the athletes is there and
- 33:19then taking kind of a
- 33:21degree of separation and
- 33:23just as somebody who loves
- 33:24the sport and wants to see it progress,
- 33:26I think I have a lot of
- 33:28thoughts like you.
- 33:30Right.
- 33:31And as a coach,
- 33:32you don't want it to be excuses, right?
- 33:35Oh, no.
- 33:37It's all about like we can
- 33:39control what we can control.
- 33:40We're going to do.
- 33:41But like until I'm just
- 33:45going to be blunt until I
- 33:46became friends with Jamie,
- 33:48like I didn't understand
- 33:49how bad online competitions were.
- 33:54the worst.
- 33:56I did a documentary on her
- 33:58last year through quarterfinals.
- 34:01I've seen her live.
- 34:03I watched her.
- 34:03I documented her.
- 34:05She's barely making it to the next level.
- 34:10Get her to an in-person competition,
- 34:12she podiums.
- 34:14So, like,
- 34:16it's such a drastic difference
- 34:19from online to live.
- 34:20Yeah.
- 34:21Like, and it's getting worse and worse.
- 34:25Yeah, I mean, Jacob...
- 34:27he struggled for a long time
- 34:29with online and I think
- 34:30he's still relative to how
- 34:33he performs in person struggles a ton.
- 34:36He's gotten a lot better.
- 34:38You know, he's more comfortable with it.
- 34:39He's, he's learned,
- 34:41we've learned on how to get
- 34:42him into the mind space for
- 34:44those things and to put his
- 34:45best foot forward.
- 34:46But I mean,
- 34:46last year he did the TFX
- 34:48qualifiers and got dead
- 34:51last in the qualifiers to
- 34:52go to the pro division and
- 34:54he won the competition.
- 34:56When I've said it over and
- 34:57over again on Around the Whiteboard,
- 34:59the two times I've been
- 35:00asked this question,
- 35:01I'm tired of shit videos
- 35:02getting people into the next stage,
- 35:05and then they don't have
- 35:06the ability or the capacity
- 35:07to do the work when they get there.
- 35:09Yep.
- 35:13I was actually glad for the penalties.
- 35:16Yeah.
- 35:18I want it spread out even
- 35:19more to more workouts.
- 35:23Oh, yeah.
- 35:23Yeah.
- 35:25Not just pick one and we're
- 35:27going to go hard on this one.
- 35:29No.
- 35:30Put quarters right behind the open.
- 35:33Give yourself two more weeks
- 35:34to do video review and hit
- 35:37a couple more of those.
- 35:39Yeah.
- 35:39I mean,
- 35:40I would love to see a full thorough
- 35:43video review.
- 35:43Did you see the proposal
- 35:46that was sent by the AFJ and PFAA?
- 35:51I've not.
- 35:51I'm just going to put a couple comments.
- 35:54Absolutely hate online.
- 35:55In person, it shifts so drastically.
- 35:58Corey,
- 35:58I backed into MFC and had a first
- 36:00and a second place finish.
- 36:02Yep.
- 36:04I effing hate online.
- 36:06I was backfield third round.
- 36:08I was backfield third round
- 36:09to Waterpalooza
- 36:10Intermediate 2019 and 20
- 36:12and podiumed it second in person.
- 36:16These are great examples of
- 36:18why online really, really sucks.
- 36:21Yeah, I mean, 2019,
- 36:23the fittest experience.
- 36:28So the fittest experience
- 36:29used to have a humongous RX division.
- 36:31Humongous.
- 36:33And they took 120 men to the RX division,
- 36:35I think.
- 36:36Or it was 120.
- 36:37I think I got 105th in the
- 36:39qualifier and ended the comp in 25th,
- 36:4222nd.
- 36:42Wow.
- 36:51it's the margin of error
- 36:52should not be that large no
- 36:54my fitness didn't improve
- 36:55that much from january to
- 36:57april like it's it's
- 37:01frustrating and I think a
- 37:01large part of it too is um
- 37:06those little no reps right
- 37:08that people get in a
- 37:09competition where they're a
- 37:10judge is really forcing
- 37:11them to hold the standard
- 37:12versus a friend in the gym who's
- 37:14Who's judging them that, okay,
- 37:15that one was close.
- 37:16This, that, and the other, you know,
- 37:18or it's their coach or, or whatever.
- 37:20I think those things add up
- 37:22to make that kind of a big drastic shift.
- 37:25Right.
- 37:25Cause I don't think
- 37:27everybody in the space is
- 37:28just trying to cheat.
- 37:30I just think they're not
- 37:31being held to a standard all the time.
- 37:34So Nadine says it does
- 37:35always make me more excited
- 37:36to qualify and go in person though.
- 37:39Absolutely.
- 37:40You can use that like as a
- 37:42chip on your shoulder.
- 37:44Like I qualified 27th and
- 37:46I'm going to go podium.
- 37:47Yeah.
- 37:48And take a look at me now.
- 37:50Right.
- 37:50Like come at me, bro.
- 37:52I mean,
- 37:52there's even a whole other portion
- 37:54about it.
- 37:54You know, just talking, you know,
- 37:57there are athletes,
- 37:57there are athletes who are
- 37:59exceptional at redoing.
- 38:02There are athletes who are
- 38:03exceptional at redoing
- 38:05workouts and improving their scores.
- 38:07And there are a lot of
- 38:08athletes out there who are
- 38:10exceptional at executing
- 38:12well the first time.
- 38:15And so you end up in this
- 38:16weird position where –
- 38:18okay,
- 38:18somebody put their best foot forward
- 38:20and did it really well the
- 38:21first time for their capacity,
- 38:22and then this person who's really,
- 38:24really good at redoing
- 38:26starts to find scores and
- 38:27finds that little gray area
- 38:30to leap that person in the
- 38:31online competition because
- 38:32they did the workout three times.
- 38:35And that's not how
- 38:36competition actually works.
- 38:37It's how online competition works,
- 38:39but it's one of the reasons it sucks.
- 38:43So as for the programming
- 38:46with the age groups, were you,
- 38:47were you cool with it?
- 38:50Um, yeah, more or less.
- 39:01Um, I think the,
- 39:04I think the 35 to 39
- 39:06division could have had a
- 39:07little bit more oomph to
- 39:08some of their workouts.
- 39:10Um,
- 39:11know a lot of those guys and
- 39:13girls in the 35 to 39 like
- 39:15they're going to they go to
- 39:16semi-finals you know I know
- 39:19will morad's kind of the
- 39:20poster boy for all that um
- 39:23but I didn't have any major
- 39:28issue with them I didn't
- 39:30love the row workout um
- 39:35I didn't love that they rode
- 39:38in every stage of
- 39:39competition leading up to
- 39:42the games for them.
- 39:46Chest-to-bar, handstand push-up,
- 39:48double under box jump was fine.
- 39:50It wasn't anything to blow your hair back.
- 39:56The thruster power clean
- 39:58toe-to-bar one was...
- 40:01okay there it was I think
- 40:03the overall prevailing
- 40:05theme for a lot of the
- 40:06programming and I know
- 40:08legends the people who
- 40:09program the the qualifiers
- 40:11for the age groups are not
- 40:12the same people who program
- 40:13quarterfinals for the the
- 40:15open division and the age
- 40:16groups but the prevailing
- 40:17theme for the programming
- 40:19to me has been there's just
- 40:20no separation value in the workouts
- 40:24The way the workouts have
- 40:26been written this year,
- 40:27there's not a place where a
- 40:29bunch of people are going
- 40:30to get stonewalled and you
- 40:32can just kind of cruise past people,
- 40:35which, good, bad, or indifferent,
- 40:37just is what it is.
- 40:40So the one thing that was
- 40:42very prevalent last year
- 40:44was that there were spots
- 40:46and workouts that were stoppers.
- 40:50And you would get a backup of 20, 30,
- 40:5450 athletes.
- 40:55You couldn't get past X, right?
- 40:59That has not been the case
- 41:01in the elite division this year.
- 41:04It came back in the age group semis.
- 41:08where that snatch you know I
- 41:12think in jamie's division
- 41:14almost 60 athletes were
- 41:15stopped at the same spot
- 41:16she was and couldn't hit
- 41:19the last bar right is that
- 41:23good for the sport or bad for the sport
- 41:44I think an inevitable part
- 41:47of testing at a higher skill or capacity,
- 41:53you will have people get
- 41:54blocked by something.
- 41:56I think it's an
- 41:57inevitability of increasing
- 41:58the difficulty of programming.
- 42:01People will get blocked or slowed down.
- 42:03I don't think it should be
- 42:07done inappropriately.
- 42:11but I do think it is okay to
- 42:13have those movements if
- 42:14you're looking for a
- 42:17specific checkpoint for
- 42:21something you would like to
- 42:22do in the next stage, right?
- 42:26Like if in semifinals, quarterfinals,
- 42:30easy example,
- 42:31if they wanted these legless,
- 42:34they had rope climbs.
- 42:37If we didn't have rope
- 42:38climbs and had legless,
- 42:41Maybe, okay,
- 42:42we have muscle-ups and something else, so,
- 42:44okay,
- 42:44they probably can do some legless
- 42:46rope climbs.
- 42:47But I think that's kind of
- 42:49how my brain gravitates
- 42:51toward those things.
- 42:53I think what it does is it
- 42:55allows different kinds of
- 42:57athletes to move on the
- 43:00leaderboard maybe 2.5%.
- 43:055%, right?
- 43:06If you're an athlete who
- 43:08struggles with a dense set
- 43:11of gymnastics or a very heavy barbell,
- 43:15and those things are more
- 43:16evenly distributed across a workout,
- 43:19then you're going to like
- 43:21that those things aren't there, right?
- 43:23So the 20-minute AMRAP, for example,
- 43:25if that was a 20-minute
- 43:26AMRAP with 30-30-30-90, right?
- 43:36So instead of 50 double unders, 10, 10, 10,
- 43:38it was 90 double unders, 30, 30, 30.
- 43:43Probably a relatively
- 43:45different leaderboard.
- 43:48Because there are athletes
- 43:51who can keep chipping through 10,
- 43:53but if they had to do 20 or 30,
- 43:55they're going to start to
- 43:56deteriorate and slow down.
- 43:58or on the chest to bar the
- 43:59same kind of a thing versus
- 44:01the athletes who would have, I mean,
- 44:04obviously everybody would
- 44:04have slowed down to a degree,
- 44:06but they would have been
- 44:06able to keep their rate of
- 44:08travel closer and faster to
- 44:10what they were doing with tens.
- 44:13So I think it just,
- 44:14it depends on what the
- 44:16programmers are going for
- 44:19from a coaching and
- 44:20programming perspective.
- 44:22I mean,
- 44:22my job is to have people prepare
- 44:24for whichever variation comes out.
- 44:26Right.
- 44:28Yeah, and I mean,
- 44:31just remembering that this
- 44:33is now 200 people instead
- 44:34of 30 at this level.
- 44:37So the participants change
- 44:41when you go to 200.
- 44:45Larry jumps in with,
- 44:47Bob said it started heavier.
- 44:49I don't want to dive into a
- 44:51lot of the Bob and Joe stuff,
- 44:54only for the fact that they
- 44:55have been hit pretty hard this week.
- 44:57And they have been nothing
- 44:58but kind to me in this show
- 45:02when I went to Legends last year.
- 45:04And I'm really hoping to do
- 45:05some behind-the-scenes
- 45:06stuff at the games with the
- 45:09Masters athletes this year.
- 45:12But I will say they did not
- 45:15come across well in that podcast.
- 45:18I think there needed to be
- 45:19an off-air conversation
- 45:21prior to them going live.
- 45:23Yeah.
- 45:25I would agree with that.
- 45:29Yeah.
- 45:30It's just, I mean,
- 45:31the snatch weight was heavy for some,
- 45:35not heavy for others.
- 45:36Maybe could have been
- 45:37different for the different divisions.
- 45:41I just think a lot of it too
- 45:44was just the row.
- 45:45Like what could you row?
- 45:48I coach a teenage athlete.
- 45:49She did the last barbell in 40 seconds,
- 45:5250 seconds.
- 45:54For her, I mean, it was heavy,
- 45:56but it really wasn't a snatch workout.
- 45:58It was a rowing workout.
- 46:03So the teenagers had the
- 46:04same workouts as the masters?
- 46:06Yes.
- 46:07I know 16 and 17 did.
- 46:09I do not have anybody in 14 to 15,
- 46:11so I do not know.
- 46:12But it would have been the
- 46:13same workout scaled.
- 46:15Yeah.
- 46:15Which is odd to me because
- 46:18we've been told that the
- 46:20event organizers were
- 46:21taking over a majority of
- 46:23the programming starting at semifinals.
- 46:26But those two groups are different.
- 46:30The Masters and the Teens
- 46:31are run by two different organizations.
- 46:35How did they...
- 46:37Yeah.
- 46:38Did,
- 46:39I guess Pitt just might've deferred to
- 46:42what they wanted to do.
- 46:45I don't know.
- 46:45Knowing the people at Pitt,
- 46:47they like to program too.
- 46:48Like, you know, I don't,
- 46:52it's a very interesting, you know,
- 46:54like I heard that the
- 46:58people programming for
- 46:59semifinals didn't even know
- 47:01what the quarterfinals and
- 47:01the open workouts were.
- 47:03Well, that's problematic.
- 47:06So it's – I don't know.
- 47:08Like I just – like you said, bigger circle,
- 47:12more complexity issues in
- 47:14the systems that have to be worked out.
- 47:16Yeah, I don't know.
- 47:20Yeah.
- 47:23Well, that's all we really had today.
- 47:25We're coming up on that hour.
- 47:27We didn't have anything crazy.
- 47:29And this will be kind of
- 47:30typically the format going forward.
- 47:33The reason it's called Chopping It Up is –
- 47:36we'll just talk about
- 47:36whatever kind of pops into
- 47:37our heads as we move forward.
- 47:40And that means you get to
- 47:41contribute to this show
- 47:43when you're in the chat,
- 47:44throw some stuff in there
- 47:45and we'll dive down whatever road you,
- 47:49you lead us.
- 47:50Yeah.
- 47:50That'll be fun.
- 47:51Yeah.
- 47:51Questions, comments, random stuff.
- 47:53The good thing is the
- 47:54CrossFit space always has
- 47:55something happen every week.
- 47:58Yeah.
- 47:59So we'll probably always
- 48:00have something to talk about.
- 48:03Why I love your and Kotler's
- 48:05idea of like a season, a tour.
- 48:09Gosh, man, the content.
- 48:12I don't understand why this
- 48:14is a hard sell at this point.
- 48:16More content, more competitions,
- 48:19more opportunities for the
- 48:20athletes to make money,
- 48:22more opportunities for the
- 48:23athletes to get spotlight,
- 48:24less online competition,
- 48:26less stuff in CrossFit's hands.
- 48:28CrossFit would have to oversee a lot.
- 48:31Because they're going to
- 48:33have to be the governing body.
- 48:34CrossFit, if this happened,
- 48:36is going to have to be the NFL.
- 48:39And govern all this.
- 48:40And you're going to have to
- 48:41find competitions who want
- 48:43to take part in it.
- 48:44And there would be... I don't know.
- 48:48You could come up with a
- 48:49point system based on the
- 48:53programming and the size of
- 48:55the competition.
- 48:56CrossFit evaluates the programming.
- 48:58determines how many points
- 49:00you get for the first
- 49:00second third fourth if you
- 49:02go all the way down to
- 49:03fifth like wadapalooza
- 49:04should be able to get
- 49:05people more points than tfx
- 49:07it's a bigger competition
- 49:08there's more people they're
- 49:10swimming like all these
- 49:11things to piggyback on your
- 49:12idea you hire mike halpin
- 49:15you do a strength of field
- 49:17for every competition yes
- 49:18depending on the strength
- 49:19of field for that
- 49:20competition you get more or
- 49:22less points yes you are
- 49:25Yes.
- 49:27You're going to have to do
- 49:29online qualifiers to get there.
- 49:30Okay, I get it.
- 49:32Whatever.
- 49:33You can still do quarterfinals.
- 49:35You run quarterfinals like a
- 49:36last chance online
- 49:37qualifier to get to
- 49:38semifinals for people who
- 49:39need to accrue more points,
- 49:41and they're only missing
- 49:42out on a couple points.
- 49:43Only the top 20 in
- 49:45quarterfinals even get points.
- 49:47Every single video is went through.
- 49:49Every single video is scrutinized,
- 49:51making it unideal to have to do that.
- 49:53You want to go get your
- 49:54points in other competitions.
- 49:56Athletes get to structure their own year.
- 50:02It's so much better.
- 50:04It's so much better.
- 50:05It drives me up the wall.
- 50:10Whatever is the first stage
- 50:12of where CrossFit takes it over,
- 50:14whether it be semifinals or the games,
- 50:17I don't care.
- 50:18You take the last couple
- 50:20people out or the first
- 50:21couple people out.
- 50:22Okay.
- 50:25The night before the competition,
- 50:28you have a true last chance qualifier.
- 50:32Here's three workouts.
- 50:33You're going to go back to back to back.
- 50:36Winner's in.
- 50:37Like a gauntlet.
- 50:38That'd be crazy.
- 50:40Well, it doesn't have to be like,
- 50:42like waterfall style or whatever.
- 50:44Yeah.
- 50:44Yeah.
- 50:44Just the night before run three workouts.
- 50:50Yeah.
- 50:50You're going to be tired going in,
- 50:51but at least you got in and
- 50:53you have your shot.
- 50:55Yeah.
- 50:56I, I also think,
- 50:57and people are going to
- 50:59yell at me for this and I don't care.
- 51:01Um, I think if you like,
- 51:03if you were at the CrossFit games, um,
- 51:06the margin of points you
- 51:08need to get to go to
- 51:09semifinals for the next year is minimal.
- 51:12Like you basically just need
- 51:13to show up and do a
- 51:14competition and not look like a fool.
- 51:17Like you went to the CrossFit games.
- 51:19Did you hear Saxon's proposal?
- 51:22No.
- 51:23And I,
- 51:23and I don't know if he told me this
- 51:24off the air or if I saw it on the air,
- 51:25whatever, but he said,
- 51:29top 10 at the games,
- 51:31you're automatically in next season.
- 51:34If you have your L1,
- 51:37If you make X number of
- 51:39appearances at other
- 51:40competitions and then you
- 51:43just put this criteria and
- 51:45as long as you do this and
- 51:47help promote the sport that way,
- 51:50you're back in next season.
- 51:52I don't see why that would be an issue.
- 51:56It's not like they randomly
- 51:57didn't get fit.
- 52:00I coached Kelly last year.
- 52:02She has not been doing a ton
- 52:04of super CrossFit specific work.
- 52:06in the last couple months
- 52:08since she decided to step back,
- 52:10I've got news for everybody.
- 52:11She's still really, really,
- 52:13really freaking fit.
- 52:18It's not like people who go
- 52:19to the games and then when
- 52:22the clock ticks to December
- 52:24as we go into like
- 52:25Wadapalooza season and all that,
- 52:27that their fitness
- 52:28magically evaporates and
- 52:30they have to prove to us
- 52:31again that they are games athletes.
- 52:36It annoys me.
- 52:37If you have been to the games,
- 52:38you've already been vetted.
- 52:39I agree.
- 52:41Especially if you're top 10.
- 52:42If you're top 10 games,
- 52:44that's not a fluke.
- 52:46Yeah.
- 52:48So 10 people, men and women,
- 52:51get an exemption for the
- 52:54next season as long as you
- 52:56help promote the sport by
- 52:57doing this list of things,
- 53:00which are a lot easier than
- 53:01having to compete against
- 53:02people to get back.
- 53:04And it would be – I mean
- 53:05there would be challenges
- 53:06like with a circuit,
- 53:09I guess the game spots
- 53:11wouldn't necessarily be
- 53:12allocated by region.
- 53:13It would just be people –
- 53:15like that part would get weird.
- 53:18Because some of the tour
- 53:19dates are going to be in other countries.
- 53:22Exactly.
- 53:22That's when you grow it internationally.
- 53:24Well,
- 53:24you also get a lot more
- 53:25cross-pollination.
- 53:27Right.
- 53:28Because you're not –
- 53:30you're not growing it
- 53:30through an Olympic style.
- 53:32You're growing it through
- 53:33like a PGA or tennis.
- 53:35Yeah.
- 53:36Style.
- 53:37Yeah.
- 53:40Yeah.
- 53:40It always, the, I always thought about,
- 53:42I'm not super familiar with
- 53:44golf and tennis.
- 53:44I know ish of them, but it also, it always,
- 53:48I did MMA for a while.
- 53:49When I was in the military
- 53:50and it always like the thought was, okay,
- 53:52like they fight a couple of times a year,
- 53:54they move up the ranking.
- 53:55That was always how my head
- 53:56thought about it as well.
- 53:57Like, and it, it's still hard.
- 54:00Like people like Jacob or, you know,
- 54:04a lot of athletes that I
- 54:05coach who are up and coming
- 54:06semifinal athletes.
- 54:08Hey, if you're trying to punch your ticket,
- 54:10like we're going to have to,
- 54:11we're going to have to go
- 54:12grind out some comps.
- 54:14and get some points and it's
- 54:15going to be a journey while
- 54:17you're still getting fitter.
- 54:18But to Pat's comment, yes,
- 54:20because you can then design
- 54:22training cycles better and long-term,
- 54:26like really long-term
- 54:28planning and things like that.
- 54:30And you're, it's still going to,
- 54:32it's still going to be hard
- 54:33for those athletes to punch in, but it's,
- 54:38it's not this one weekend
- 54:39because we're still living, you know,
- 54:41to your point about the online stuff,
- 54:43we're still living in the world of,
- 54:45if you get sick,
- 54:48the week of quarterfinals,
- 54:50you're screwed.
- 54:53Your whole year is over.
- 54:56So I'm going to put this up
- 54:58and I want you to think about it.
- 54:59Cause I want to talk about it next week.
- 55:01And this is where we'll leave it.
- 55:02So Brandon Swan is,
- 55:05friend of the show,
- 55:07made this chart of the
- 55:10sickness-wellness continuum,
- 55:13but more for an elite athlete.
- 55:16So we all know the top.
- 55:18So I'm going to talk over it
- 55:19at this point.
- 55:19Yeah, you're fine.
- 55:21You know, where you go sick, well,
- 55:24fitness.
- 55:26And that is the continuum we know.
- 55:29But for an elite athlete,
- 55:30he adds a bottom to this continuum,
- 55:33right?
- 55:34make it a full circle okay
- 55:39and here it comes and if
- 55:45anybody knows brandon he
- 55:47has been to the games a
- 55:49couple times and every time
- 55:50he gets there he gets hurt
- 55:51he's australian yeah
- 55:53correct yeah okay I know
- 55:54who it is interesting
- 55:59And he's arguing that the
- 56:01fitness you're doing in
- 56:02competing actually leads to sickness.
- 56:10Yeah,
- 56:10there's a mountain of data to support
- 56:12that as well.
- 56:16Yeah,
- 56:17we can dive into that because that's
- 56:18also a little bit more
- 56:21science-y strength conditioning and yeah.
- 56:25We can dive into that for sure.
- 56:26So it's on his Instagram if
- 56:28anybody wants to go read
- 56:29his full narrative on this.
- 56:32But yeah, I saw it and I was like, dang,
- 56:36that's pretty thought-provoking.
- 56:38And I think that would be
- 56:39really cool for us to talk
- 56:40about next week.
- 56:41I agree.
- 56:41That would be cool.
- 56:43So with that,
- 56:46have fun watching semis this weekend.
- 56:49Good luck.
- 56:50And you're actually traveling next week,
- 56:52right?
- 56:53Yes, sir.
- 56:53We'll have to figure that out.
- 56:55Yeah, we'll figure something out.
- 56:57Yeah,
- 56:57I leave Thursday and then come back
- 56:58Monday and then leave the next Thursday.
- 57:01Okay.
- 57:02Well, with that,
- 57:04thank you everybody for being here.
- 57:06We'll see you next time on
- 57:07Chopping It Up with Coach Crispy Green.
- 57:10Bye, guys.
