Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:04daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, today's episode is a bit of
- 0:26a different one. I'm not going to be doing a
- 0:28traditional Mini Scroll episode. I do apologize because I know
- 0:32Mini, she's tried and true. You guys are so loyal and I know
- 0:36what you come here for, but I'm going to be doing a TikTok
- 0:39awards recap for you guys because this was a huge moment
- 0:42for us. We got to do the red carpet.
- 0:45We were the only independent media brand on the red carpet.
- 0:49It was so cool. Every other publisher there was
- 0:51huge. They were part of a big
- 0:53conglomerate like the ABC, Channel 10, The Daily Telegraph,
- 0:58We had pedestrian group, Val Morgan, like huge, huge titles.
- 1:02And then there was us. It was a really, really big
- 1:04event for us. So I'm excited to talk about it
- 1:06in general, but also it was a huge undertaking.
- 1:10So it has really taken over the past two days for us.
- 1:13And I just did not have time to put together a meaningful
- 1:17episode for you guys today. So tomorrow for a Friday mini, I
- 1:21will give you guys a meaty good episode, I promise.
- 1:25But I didn't want to leave you guys hanging.
- 1:27So before I get into it, Please remember to rate, review and
- 1:29subscribe. We are trying to get to 1000
- 1:31Spotify star ratings by the end of the year.
- 1:34Please Spotify star rate US. OK, thank you.
- 1:37OK, so let me set the scene in terms of our history with the
- 1:41TikTok Awards. So the TikTok Awards, they
- 1:44launched maybe just a year or two after Centennial launched.
- 1:48And we've always been invited, like since their inception, we
- 1:51have always had a spot on the guest list, which is really
- 1:54cool. And they used to be much
- 1:55smaller. And this year it was at the ICC.
- 1:58Well, actually not. It's been renamed.
- 2:00TikTok bought the rights to the Convention Center in Sydney.
- 2:04So the name has changed from the ICC to the TikTok Entertainment
- 2:07Center, which is so crazy. And that was only announced like
- 2:102 days before the TikTok Awards. I thought it was like a stick,
- 2:13like for the TikTok Awards to be like, yeah, the TikTok
- 2:15Entertainment Center. No, no, no, it's like fully
- 2:18rebranded to that now, which is so wild.
- 2:21So it's now this like huge scale event.
- 2:25As I've told you guys so many times, Centennial, we were one
- 2:28of the first ever publishers in Australia to use TikTok, first
- 2:32of all, consistently, but also to report news.
- 2:34When we started on TikTok in December 2019, which is when we
- 2:37launched, there were some publishers on the platform, but
- 2:40they were doing like office content behind the scenes.
- 2:43Nobody was using it for news. And it was actually my husband
- 2:45Sean who suggested to us, like, if you know, people are putting
- 2:49news on Instagram and carousels and stuff and like basically
- 2:51taking their stories that they would be reporting on on dot
- 2:54coms in newspapers and magazines and putting them in digestible
- 2:59formats for social. Like why don't you just do that
- 3:00in short form video for TikTok. So our first video that we did
- 3:04was the very first. I think it was like January 2nd,
- 3:06maybe January 2nd or 3rd. We posted a video like that
- 3:10about Nikki tutorials coming out as trans and it like went so
- 3:14viral. It did so well.
- 3:16And we were like, OK, this is our our strategy.
- 3:18I guess young people want to consume entertainment news on
- 3:23TikTok. And obviously that is like a no
- 3:25brainer now. And none of us are surprised to
- 3:27hear that. But that was like revolutionary
- 3:29at the time. So it was very cool to be
- 3:31recognized by TikTok early on for that.
- 3:33We did some media for TikTok in those early days as well.
- 3:36Like we were on TV talking about how we use TikTok and stuff
- 3:38because they were really trying to build their legitimacy.
- 3:41So for the first several years, like I said, we were always
- 3:43invited. And then about two years ago, I
- 3:47asked, can we be on the red carpet like we always get
- 3:49invited? We're a TikTok first publisher.
- 3:51TikTok is the main pillar of our brand.
- 3:53We don't publish on Meta. You know, we really don't use a
- 3:56lot of other socials like TikTok is our main one.
- 3:59And obviously you guys know who listen to mini everyday.
- 4:02Like TikTok is our bread and butter in terms of what we're
- 4:05reporting on. Like we are reporting on
- 4:07Internet culture And TikTok at the moment is the most
- 4:10influential platform when it comes to Internet culture and
- 4:14therefore culture at large in many ways.
- 4:17When I first asked for and carpet access, like I said, this
- 4:19was only a couple years ago. So publishers, yes, they were
- 4:23covering TikTok by this point, but you know, it really felt
- 4:25like people were cutting our grass like we were first.
- 4:28So I was like, please. And they said there was, you
- 4:32know, very limited access. And the publishers that ended up
- 4:36getting access were the huge ones, right?
- 4:38Like the ABC Channel 9, like all the mainstream ones.
- 4:42OK. And that was honestly a little
- 4:45bit disappointing to see because I really believe for the TikTok
- 4:49Awards, the access should be first and foremost granted to
- 4:54social first publishers like TikTok first publishers,
- 4:57publishers that are new media that are trying to change the
- 5:00game. Like that's what TikTok is
- 5:01trying to do, and that's what they're celebrating at the
- 5:03TikTok Awards. But whatever, I was like, I get
- 5:05it. Like it's building that
- 5:07legitimacy to have the huge name brands that are willing to be on
- 5:10the red carpet. But I mean, I wouldn't say
- 5:12actually willing, like people are fighting to get on that red
- 5:14carpet because we know that like creators are the new celebrities
- 5:18for young people and everybody wants to tap the young audience,
- 5:21right? So that was fine.
- 5:22OK. And then last year we were in
- 5:24conversations about doing the red carpet, but it ended up not
- 5:27working out. We ended up not getting a spot.
- 5:29I think I was really gutted because I, I really, I believe I
- 5:33thought we were more in the running than we actually were to
- 5:35get it. And I was really upset when it
- 5:38turned out that we didn't. And so I actually pushed back
- 5:42and this was a really big moment for me because, you know, I just
- 5:45become a solo founder. And in becoming a solo founder,
- 5:49it's been quite the journey of me, like finding my voice and
- 5:52being able to stand up for myself and my brand without
- 5:55having, you know, like a business partner alongside with
- 5:57you, like having to do everything yourself and like, be
- 6:01that boss. It's been a challenge for me
- 6:04these past couple of years. And so I really pushed back.
- 6:07And I was like, you know, we are a TikTok first publisher.
- 6:11We cover TikTok every single day.
- 6:13Like what is happening with these creators, what's happening
- 6:15online? And that has been our bread and
- 6:17butter since we launched. For years.
- 6:19I stayed in my case. And ANYWAYS, they were really,
- 6:22really sweet about it. Like there was nothing that
- 6:24could be done at the time, but they understood my frustrations.
- 6:27And so, yeah, this year I didn't have to fight for it.
- 6:31They offered us red carpet. And it felt like this full
- 6:34circle moment for me, this moment where I was like, Oh my
- 6:36God, like standing up for myself and making my case.
- 6:38And, you know, just being like, This is why we deserve to be
- 6:41here. Like fighting for that and
- 6:43knowing we deserve to be there. It worked because I didn't even
- 6:47have to ask this year. They offered it to us.
- 6:49And like I said, we were the only independent media on that
- 6:53carpet. It was so cool.
- 6:55So the event itself was pretty amazing.
- 6:57Like I said, the scale was massive this year.
- 7:00There were floors of activations.
- 7:03I'm going to say there are probably thousands of people.
- 7:05It was huge. It was amazing.
- 7:06Everybody was like dressed to the nines, OK.
- 7:09However, the weather was crazy yesterday.
- 7:12We had this wild tropical thunderstorm in the middle of
- 7:15the day. So the red carpet, which was
- 7:17supposed to be outside was moved to inside because of the
- 7:19weather. Obviously makes sense.
- 7:21I'm sure you guys have been getting content on your For You
- 7:23page, especially if you're in Australia, about like the red
- 7:27carpet situation and about the TikTok awards like before where
- 7:30the award ceremony actually started and how it was really
- 7:33busy and over stimulating. And that I believe is because of
- 7:36the weather. Like as somebody who was there
- 7:38like the whole day and like understood what happened
- 7:40logistically because they had to move things inside because of
- 7:44the weather. Like obviously that just changes
- 7:47things in terms of like event logistics.
- 7:49So we got to speak to so many huge creators in Australia.
- 7:53We spoke to Leticia Clark, we spoke to Leah Halton, sofa dopa
- 7:57and Bailey Rowie sing like it was so cool.
- 8:02Oh and I asked Rowie about being Chapel roans makeup artist and
- 8:06she said that Chapel just DM her out of the blue and was like I
- 8:10want you to do my makeup And Rowie was like I don't do other
- 8:12people's makeup. And she was like, that's fine.
- 8:14Like I still want you to do my makeup.
- 8:16Let me just play the clip. This DMS me like she.
- 8:19Literally just DMS me maybe like a.
- 8:21Year ago and was like, hey, I love your makeup.
- 8:23Would you do like one of my shows or like, for like a red
- 8:26carpet? And I was like, I don't do other
- 8:28people's makeup. And she was like, that's fine, I
- 8:30don't care. And then it just so happened
- 8:32that we were in New York at the same time, and it made it work.
- 8:35Also, friend of the pod, Cody Simpson, he was there.
- 8:38We actually didn't get to talk to him because he had to present
- 8:41an award or something. So he could only do a few quick
- 8:43interviews and then he was whisked away.
- 8:45But he saw us and he like tried to photobomb one of our videos,
- 8:48but Annabelle didn't quite catch it.
- 8:49Like he wasn't quite in frame, but he was like, Oh my God, hey.
- 8:52And I was like Cody, my bestie. So we started posting the
- 8:55content. It's all doing really well on
- 8:56Centennial's TikTok and the videos of Leah.
- 8:59Like, I, I mean, I know she has so many followers, but I didn't
- 9:01realize she was so culty. You guys.
- 9:04Like she has dance. Like literally the second those
- 9:08videos are going up, people are like, first, Oh my God, live
- 9:11laugh, Leah. I love you so much, Leah.
- 9:13Like, it's crazy people love her.
- 9:17So yeah, it was about two hours of red carpet interviews.
- 9:21It was so buzzy. Like, there was such a rush.
- 9:25It was so cool. You're like wrangling
- 9:26celebrities, like pulling creators over and being like,
- 9:28please talk to me and, like, firing questions off at them.
- 9:31And it was just like the most exciting, exhilarating
- 9:35experience, experience. And I feel like if you're
- 9:37somebody who really enjoys a fast-paced whirlwind type of
- 9:42experience like that, like if you work in event planning or
- 9:46PR, you know, you understand what I mean by this.
- 9:49And it is such a rush and it's so exhilarating, but it is so
- 9:52exhausting. So when the carpet was mostly
- 9:55over, we were like, OK, we want to start getting this content
- 9:58up. And they had a media room.
- 9:59So we went to the media room and we started getting our content
- 10:02up as the award started and they were playing the awards in the
- 10:05media room and they actually brought in catering for the
- 10:08media. So, you know, we had like French
- 10:10fries, pizza, chicken fingers. There was like healthy
- 10:13sandwiches, salads. Like I didn't have any of that.
- 10:15I obviously had the fries and pizza, but it was really good.
- 10:18So All in all, it was honestly a really fun experience.
- 10:22I genuinely had such a good time.
- 10:24The content we got is doing really well on socials and I
- 10:27don't know, I just had a really good time.
- 10:29I felt like I was in my element and like Centennial finally got
- 10:33there after like years of fighting for a spot on that red
- 10:37carpet. Like we finally did it and I
- 10:39think it was worth it. Like I had a really great time
- 10:42and I think the content that we got is going to really perform
- 10:45and hopefully that shows TikTok and TikTok awards in the future.
- 10:49Like This is why we should be there, you know.
- 10:52So I wanted to go over some of the awards for you guys.
- 10:54So creator of the year was Javea video of the year was Leo
- 10:58Haltons iconic inverted behind the scenes video.
- 11:02It has 150 million views. Insane.
- 11:05I remember when that video was everywhere on the free page
- 11:08TikTok Business of the year was all for Mimi, which is sofa Dove
- 11:11and Bailey White's company Beauty and fashion creator of
- 11:15the year was Ask Ellen Beauty. Actually, I think it was Rowie
- 11:19that said to me on the red carpet that So one of the
- 11:21questions I was asking attendees or nominees was what is 1
- 11:26category that doesn't exist at the TikTok awards that you wish
- 11:30did. And she actually said, I think
- 11:32fashion and beauty should be separated because fashion and
- 11:37beauty as art forms, as disciplines are so completely
- 11:41different. And I couldn't agree more.
- 11:42I am absolutely a beauty girl. But if you asked me anything
- 11:45about fashion, like I barely have a sense of personal style.
- 11:48Like I don't know anything about fashion, but beauty, I could
- 11:52tell you everything. Like I am such a beauty girl.
- 11:54And like they are so completely different in such different art
- 11:56forms. So yes, I actually really agree
- 11:58with that. But ask Allen, beauty is mostly,
- 12:01I would say a makeup creator, food creator of the year was
- 12:04Andy Cooks. You know, what I would love to
- 12:06see next year is media brand or like TikTok journalist, like
- 12:12news fluencer type of category that I think is absolutely
- 12:16missing. TikTok has been so influential
- 12:18in media, but media has also been so influential in Tik Tok's
- 12:22growth and Tik Tok's influence. Oh, and then one of the craziest
- 12:26things that happened at the event was Jonathan Bailey showed
- 12:30up as a surprise to present the TikTok for Good award.
- 12:35He's been showing up all over Sydney at these press events.
- 12:39Like so many people I know have just gone to random like brand
- 12:43events, different things like this, like media events, and
- 12:46he's just shown up there doing like a performance or a
- 12:50presentation or like an award, like whatever.
- 12:53It's so funny, it's so random. So that was really cool.
- 12:56And then, yeah, like I said, while the event was going on, we
- 12:59were publishing our content. I actually published mini scroll
- 13:02from yesterday at the event at the Tick Tock Awards backstage.
- 13:07And then we went home with our box of fries and our pizza.
- 13:11It was so much fun. It was such a great experience
- 13:14for us And yeah, that's the T on our experience at the TikTok
- 13:19Awards and how that all went down for us.
- 13:21And I hope you guys enjoyed this.
- 13:23I guess more like behind the scenes of the business kind of
- 13:27episode. Obviously the TikTok Awards is
- 13:29very relevant to mini scroll. I didn't want to leave you guys
- 13:33with nothing today, but like I said, I it's important that I do
- 13:37my due diligence when I am, you know, reporting on different
- 13:40stories and I just did not have time to do the proper research
- 13:43into the stories that I wanted to cover today.
- 13:46So all that to say, thank you guys so much for listening.
- 13:49I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 13:51and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US and
- 13:53I will talk to you guys tomorrow for a mini scroll episode that
- 13:57will be back to normal. Bye.
