- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, Ryan Divish is here and you can follow him
- 0:05Speaker 1: hat Ryan Divish and he writes for the Seattle Times.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And it is tough times in Seattle right now. So Ryan,
- 0:11Speaker 1: good to see you. I'm glad to see you outside
- 0:14Speaker 1: touching grass. But tell me how Mariners fans are doing
- 0:17Speaker 1: right now and how the city of Seattle is handling
- 0:20Speaker 1: what just happened.
- 0:24Speaker 2: You know, it's not quite like it was after the
- 0:26Speaker 2: game where it was Lord of the Flies and you know,
- 0:29Speaker 2: people were freaking out. It's I think they're starting to
- 0:35Speaker 2: kind of accept the idea what had happened, the outcome.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think the problem is is a lot of people,
- 0:41Speaker 2: a lot of the fans are digging into some of
- 0:43Speaker 2: the numbers, are going back through and reading some of
- 0:46Speaker 2: the coverage and hearing what people said and everything else.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And I think that's what is still incensing. A lot
- 0:52Speaker 2: of fans is kind of going back and looking at it.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You know, you have the time to react. I always
- 0:57Speaker 2: say that people on Twitter, it's like they shoot first
- 1:00Speaker 2: and aim later, and they react first and then they
- 1:03Speaker 2: think about it later. But I don't know that going
- 1:05Speaker 2: back and rereading or rethinking or even kind of looking
- 1:10Speaker 2: at all the details that went into that crazy seventh
- 1:13Speaker 2: inning is gonna make them feel any better.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Well, let's do. Let's let's dig right in. Since you
- 1:19Speaker 3: know you're in Montana. You got out of town before
- 1:22Speaker 3: you know, things got nasty there in Seattle. But would
- 1:25Speaker 3: you have brought in Andres Munhoz. I know that Bizardo
- 1:28Speaker 3: had a high strand rate of runners, and people are
- 1:31Speaker 3: throwing that at me on Twitter, saying like, well, look
- 1:33Speaker 3: at his strand rate.
- 1:34Speaker 4: It's top ten in baseball.
- 1:36Speaker 3: True, but at the same time, it wasn't the series
- 1:40Speaker 3: on the line, the season on the line, and you
- 1:42Speaker 3: have one of the best closers in baseball that hadn't
- 1:45Speaker 3: pitched at all in this series.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Really.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I haven't gotten back to God's Country yet, Agent,
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm still in a I'm in Washington. It's just as
- 1:54Speaker 2: beautiful here as Montana, just a little different.
- 1:57Speaker 4: No, So here's my thinking on this.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And you know the other guys that we were with,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you know, Adam Jude and Tim Booth, my other guys
- 2:06Speaker 2: that cover. When they brought in Bizarto, I was kind
- 2:08Speaker 2: of stunned. I wasn't watching the bullpen. I knew they
- 2:11Speaker 2: were gonna go there and to me, the Mariner's pitching philosophy.
- 2:15Speaker 2: A lot of times Pete Woodworth always says it is like,
- 2:17Speaker 2: if you're gonna get beat by a hit or get
- 2:20Speaker 2: beat by your best pitch, Well, if you're gonna get
- 2:22Speaker 2: beat in a leverage situation, don't you want your best
- 2:25Speaker 2: leverage reliever? And to me, everything about that situation he
- 2:30Speaker 2: needed a strikeout. Who is better at getting a strikeout
- 2:33Speaker 2: on the Mariner's bullpen than Andris Munno's. I mean, like,
- 2:36Speaker 2: this is a guy that didn't allow a hit during
- 2:38Speaker 2: the postseason, hadn't allowed a run. You're looking for a
- 2:41Speaker 2: swing and miss. George Springer hadn't seen him since July
- 2:44Speaker 2: of twenty twenty four. He'd seen Edward Bizardo three times
- 2:48Speaker 2: already in the series, including the day before when Bizarro
- 2:51Speaker 2: oddly pitched two innings in a game they were down
- 2:54Speaker 2: four runs. So I just thought, like, to me, if
- 2:59Speaker 2: you're going to go in that situation and you have
- 3:02Speaker 2: the leverage point in that situation, you go with your
- 3:05Speaker 2: best guy.
- 3:06Speaker 4: You can figure out the ninth.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I think they plan for Munos to go to innings
- 3:11Speaker 2: in that game, but you know you have you can't
- 3:15Speaker 2: save him for a lead in a ninth inning, you
- 3:17Speaker 2: don't have You can't allow yourself.
- 3:19Speaker 4: You you got up, you had a lead.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Everything's like trending towards you clinching, and you have to
- 3:25Speaker 2: go with your best in the most difficult situation.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Okay, can we also can we also put something else
- 3:31Speaker 3: to bed? You weren't walking George Springer right there to
- 3:35Speaker 3: get to Lucas. Okay, let's let's all the Mariner fans
- 3:38Speaker 3: are like, oh, they should have walked him. No, because
- 3:40Speaker 3: then you're bringing Vlad into play, right, Well, who's there
- 3:42Speaker 3: do they old series are trying to avoid in these situations? Goes? Okay,
- 3:46Speaker 3: let's say Lucas goes up there and punches out on
- 3:48Speaker 3: three pitches. Well, then Vlad comes up with the basis
- 3:50Speaker 3: load and you got to get him out with Bizarreto,
- 3:52Speaker 3: a guy he's seen a bunch of times too. So
- 3:55Speaker 3: let's also can we please div can you please put
- 3:57Speaker 3: that to bed for me, that they should not have
- 3:59Speaker 3: walked him.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not even a ru You know, that's not
- 4:02Speaker 2: a good idea at any level. You can't assume you're
- 4:05Speaker 2: going to get a double play ball. I mean, you
- 4:07Speaker 2: know when they official score you can't assume that you're
- 4:09Speaker 2: going to get a double play on a play if
- 4:10Speaker 2: they make a mistake. Can't assume that you're going to
- 4:12Speaker 2: get a double play ball.
- 4:14Speaker 4: And so no, you don't.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So like if you do it properly, if let's say
- 4:20Speaker 2: Munos gets the strikeout or gets Kurby, even if he
- 4:22Speaker 2: gives up a run like on a sackfly, then he
- 4:25Speaker 2: strikes out Lucas, then you have Muno's coming back for
- 4:29Speaker 2: the next inning and Vlad's leading off with nobody on base.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And if you get through that without massive damage, all
- 4:35Speaker 2: of a sudden, it's the back end of the Toronto
- 4:37Speaker 2: order in the ninth and Vlad is seven hitters away
- 4:40Speaker 2: from coming to the plate. All you had to do
- 4:43Speaker 2: was find a way to minimize the damage in the seventh,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and then you you have set yourself up because like
- 4:49Speaker 2: I said, if you if you get the first you get,
- 4:52Speaker 2: if you get Springer out and Lucas out, then you
- 4:54Speaker 2: have Lad leading off the eighth, so he's coming to
- 4:56Speaker 2: play with nobody on base. Then you can get creative
- 4:59Speaker 2: if you want to walk in him or do whatever.
- 5:01Speaker 2: But like I just think, to me, the worst possible
- 5:04Speaker 2: scenario in that situation was or George Springer hitting a
- 5:08Speaker 2: home run. Do we really think that if Andris Munoz
- 5:11Speaker 2: comes in, he's giving up the homer.
- 5:13Speaker 4: He might give up a hit.
- 5:14Speaker 2: He gave up some hits in the in the next inning,
- 5:17Speaker 2: but you know that doesn't lose you the game. The
- 5:20Speaker 2: worst possible scenario is Springer hitting a bomb and you
- 5:23Speaker 2: lose the lead. It's not tired or whatever, and then
- 5:25Speaker 2: you have to play differently in the final, in your
- 5:27Speaker 2: final six out. So I just think, you know, to me,
- 5:30Speaker 2: it wasn't that critical. I mean, the one thing I thought,
- 5:34Speaker 2: maybe is if you're looking to trying to you know,
- 5:37Speaker 2: plan out your game. George Kirby was actually throwing better
- 5:40Speaker 2: in the third and the fourth, and he wasn't the first.
- 5:42Speaker 2: In the second, his velocity was ticking up even more.
- 5:44Speaker 2: The movement on his pitches was better than the third
- 5:46Speaker 2: and the fourth. Maybe if you wanted to start him
- 5:48Speaker 2: in the fifth and let him face because I think
- 5:51Speaker 2: it would have been Barger or I can't remember who
- 5:53Speaker 2: it was. It was the bottom of the order coming
- 5:55Speaker 2: to Springer. If you wanted to go that way, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 2: start him in the fifth. But they were so cognizant
- 6:00Speaker 2: about not starting Brian Wu in the middle of an inning,
- 6:03Speaker 2: but even then you have all your leverage levers available.
- 6:06Speaker 2: So if you start Kirby in the fifth, maybe he
- 6:08Speaker 2: gives up a base runner, then you go to Bizardo,
- 6:10Speaker 2: or then you go to Matt Brash and kind of
- 6:12Speaker 2: clean it up, because I also have Bryce Miller still
- 6:14Speaker 2: sitting in the dugout ready to pitch one inning and
- 6:17Speaker 2: throw it as hard as he could, and he was
- 6:19Speaker 2: probably the best pitcher for the Mariners in the entire series.
- 6:21Speaker 4: So I just I thought, like I think they had
- 6:24Speaker 4: it planned out.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I think they're hoping three from Kirby, three or four
- 6:27Speaker 2: from Kirby, two from Wu, two from Munyos and figure
- 6:30Speaker 2: out the other one inning. But I just think that,
- 6:33Speaker 2: like you know, you can't like designate that you want
- 6:36Speaker 2: Munos to pitch the last two innings when there's a
- 6:39Speaker 2: higher leverage situation.
- 6:41Speaker 4: That's just screaming at you.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Put your best guy in here, figure out a way
- 6:44Speaker 2: to get him out.

- 7:59Speaker 5: That's exactly a perfect transfer to me where I can
- 8:03Speaker 5: only relate to it on our twenty sixteen Cleveland run
- 8:05Speaker 5: where we had Andrew Miller at the time and Cody
- 8:08Speaker 5: Allen at the back of the bullpen. We don't go
- 8:10Speaker 5: on our run unless Tito handles that bullpen the way
- 8:13Speaker 5: he did, and where if exact same situation seventh inning
- 8:16Speaker 5: we might have second and third, you need to strike out.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Why wait for the eighth inning for Andrew Miller or
- 8:21Speaker 5: something like that. We just brought him in rate then
- 8:24Speaker 5: get that strikeout, get through to it, and then you
- 8:26Speaker 5: can kind of flip flop or miss or manage your
- 8:27Speaker 5: way from there. But it also happened again another thing
- 8:31Speaker 5: where I think we threw Andrew Miller in like Game
- 8:33Speaker 5: four or five when we shouldn't have our two winnings,
- 8:36Speaker 5: and then brought him back the next day. So stuff was,
- 8:39Speaker 5: he's probably a little tired. Guys had just seen him,
- 8:41Speaker 5: so even another reason to maybe not use him. There
- 8:45Speaker 5: Bizardo there, So it really does it coincides. We don't
- 8:50Speaker 5: get as far as we did without Tito pulling the
- 8:52Speaker 5: right triggers and the right strings. But there's one that
- 8:56Speaker 5: I can be questioned. I think the manager Dan Wilson
- 8:58Speaker 5: is going to be facing questions about that because you
- 9:00Speaker 5: just said it's the highest leverage situation right there, give
- 9:04Speaker 5: me your highest leverage pitcher. So I think it just
- 9:06Speaker 5: lines up there. What I want to transfer over to though,
- 9:09Speaker 5: is kind of where do they go from here with
- 9:11Speaker 5: their their roster. Then you've got two big free agents
- 9:14Speaker 5: looming ahead. You got a Suarez Naylor who'll become free
- 9:17Speaker 5: agents again. What do you see happening with the two
- 9:20Speaker 5: of them? Do you see them both going bull staying
- 9:22Speaker 5: or maybe keeping one or what do you see Seattle's
- 9:25Speaker 5: moves this offseason?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Well, they'll have three actually too, because I think Polonco
- 9:29Speaker 2: has a player option and it's only like six million,
- 9:32Speaker 2: so he'll opt out of that and want to get
- 9:36Speaker 2: paid for his season. And I think, you know, there's
- 9:40Speaker 2: three guys there. I think they're hopeful. You know, the
- 9:43Speaker 2: priority is probably Naylor because he's such a good fit.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I think their best chance is to bring back Polonco
- 9:51Speaker 2: because he likes how Seattle feels, you know, as a
- 9:54Speaker 2: guy that only had one, you know, only played in
- 9:57Speaker 2: one organization before being traded to Seattle and didn't want to,
- 10:00Speaker 2: you know, try something different this past offseason and came
- 10:03Speaker 2: back to Seattle.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Not exactly a place where you go to rebuild your numbers.
- 10:07Speaker 4: But he's very comfortable.
- 10:08Speaker 2: They're comfortable with Julio Rodriguez and Edgar Martinez is one
- 10:11Speaker 2: of the hitting coaches, and Kevin Seitzer. So I think,
- 10:14Speaker 2: you know, they have a chance to get Polanco back
- 10:16Speaker 2: if they give him market value. Naylor will be the
- 10:19Speaker 2: interesting one, you know. I think with Suarez they'll look
- 10:24Speaker 2: at it, but they're not gonna, you know, give him
- 10:26Speaker 2: fifteen million or something like that. They're just not going
- 10:29Speaker 2: to They they you know, the priorities are probably Naylor
- 10:32Speaker 2: and Polanco in that order.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Okay, div what are they gonna do about their pitching
- 10:39Speaker 3: because I know they're not going to keep the payroll
- 10:41Speaker 3: going up. We've learned that about the Mariners. That's one
- 10:43Speaker 3: thing they're not gonna do. And if they have Naylor,
- 10:45Speaker 3: they have Polonco, they have Suarez as free agency. But
- 10:48Speaker 3: at some point this pitching staff is gonna start getting expensive.
- 10:52Speaker 3: So are they gonna try and sign any of these
- 10:54Speaker 3: guys to a long term deal. Are they gonna try
- 10:56Speaker 3: and maybe think about trading one of them to get
- 10:59Speaker 3: some money off the books? How are they going to
- 11:01Speaker 3: handle this? Because Munos is getting close to arbitration. Logan Gilbert,
- 11:04Speaker 3: Brian Wu, George Kirby Castillo is already locked up to
- 11:08Speaker 3: obviously to a team friend the deal. But how do
- 11:10Speaker 3: they make this all work because their strength as they're.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Pitching, Yeah, I haven't you know, they offered Logan Gilbert
- 11:18Speaker 2: an extension kind of before he was even in the
- 11:20Speaker 2: big leagues, kind of the I don't know. It wasn't
- 11:23Speaker 2: like an Ebon White extension, but what you see from
- 11:25Speaker 2: teams and they offer a guy that hasn't really debuted yet.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It wasn't for a lot of money. Kirby, I don't
- 11:31Speaker 2: know that they've had any of the discussions. I don't
- 11:33Speaker 2: know that they believe that those guys are that interested
- 11:35Speaker 2: in signing extensions. Of the group, maybe Bryce Miller is
- 11:39Speaker 2: the most likely to sign an extension because he wants
- 11:42Speaker 2: his ranch in Texas. But that's something they're gonna run into,
- 11:46Speaker 2: and I think, you know, for them, probably what they're
- 11:49Speaker 2: thinking is is like run it back for next year
- 11:52Speaker 2: if possible, with most of the same guys, with your
- 11:55Speaker 2: core guys, and then make the harder decisions a year
- 11:58Speaker 2: from now. But Logan Gilbert is going to get a
- 12:00Speaker 2: lot more expensive, you know, even with a year where
- 12:03Speaker 2: he wasn't you know, didn't get the thirty starts that
- 12:05Speaker 2: he normally does. His arbitration number is still going to
- 12:07Speaker 2: go up. Kirby's arbitration number is still going to go up.
- 12:09Speaker 2: It's all going to add their incremental you know, it's
- 12:12Speaker 2: like inflation. It's all going up. And so their payroll
- 12:15Speaker 2: is going to go up without even signing these other guys,
- 12:19Speaker 2: I think, you know, they certainly can't claim poor. You
- 12:23Speaker 2: make it to the alcs, all the all the benefits
- 12:26Speaker 2: of a postseason run. Not to mention they with the
- 12:29Speaker 2: last week of the season, they went over their attendance
- 12:31Speaker 2: figures from last year. So they have money, Like they
- 12:33Speaker 2: don't like to add a ton of payroll, but it's
- 12:36Speaker 2: not because they can't.
- 12:37Speaker 4: That's the difference.
- 12:38Speaker 2: They can, you know, And I think if you don't
- 12:40Speaker 2: capitalize on this moment, like everybody says, oh, this is
- 12:43Speaker 2: a beginning, not the end. That's fine, It's only a beginning.
- 12:47Speaker 2: If you continue to invest and make the team better.
- 12:49Speaker 2: There are obvious holes you're looking at. You know, first
- 12:52Speaker 2: and third are undecided, you know, whether you you know,
- 12:56Speaker 2: they have to make a decision on whether they want
- 12:57Speaker 2: to bring Randy a rose Aorana back at eighteen million
- 13:00Speaker 2: dollars a year or if they want to move him
- 13:02Speaker 2: in his final year and try and you know, supplement somehow.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Get more big league pieces.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But they have pieces that they need to add, and
- 13:08Speaker 2: the pitching is part of it, Like they don't they
- 13:10Speaker 2: need to add another middle reliever. So their their payroll
- 13:13Speaker 2: is going to have to increase, and it can't just
- 13:14Speaker 2: increase by you know, everybody getting a little bit more
- 13:18Speaker 2: in salary arbitration and everything costing a little bit more. No,
- 13:21Speaker 2: it's you have to capitalize on this opportunity. And it's
- 13:23Speaker 2: something they failed to do in twenty twenty two where
- 13:26Speaker 2: they they make the postseason, you know, upset the Blue
- 13:30Speaker 2: Jays in the first round, and then you know, lose
- 13:32Speaker 2: the Astros, but everybody's excited, and then they have two
- 13:35Speaker 2: straight years where they don't really do a whole lot
- 13:37Speaker 2: in the off season. I just think you've got to
- 13:40Speaker 2: capitalize on it now. You know, and and like, to
- 13:43Speaker 2: be honest, they didn't do a lot this past offseason.
- 13:46Speaker 2: They went and got all their pieces really at the deadline.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Or hey, Polanco was their major free agent signing, and
- 13:52Speaker 2: it was more of a you know, a high or
- 13:55Speaker 2: low risk, high reward.
- 13:57Speaker 4: They weren't.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I think they offered it where they pay seven points
- 14:00Speaker 2: of five million with a vesting option. I mean, that's
- 14:02Speaker 2: that's not a huge investment, and it paid off. But
- 14:05Speaker 2: I don't know that you can try and run that
- 14:07Speaker 2: same game plan back again where you don't do a
- 14:10Speaker 2: lot and then try and supplement at the deadline. It's
- 14:12Speaker 2: just a tough way to live.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Dev I don't know if you know this, but the
- 14:16Speaker 3: wind is blowing like from this my coffee this side.
- 14:22Speaker 4: It's that coffee.
- 14:25Speaker 2: No, it's forty five degrees here in ording So I'm
- 14:27Speaker 2: like hanging out in Washington.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Now we can put some beautiful weather forty five degrees.
- 14:33Speaker 3: We can put some you know, a sweatshirt or something on.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You know. Oh, this is perfect.
- 14:37Speaker 2: After the after sitting in the press box in Detroit
- 14:40Speaker 2: and in Toronto where there's no air moving, this is
- 14:44Speaker 2: this is beautiful fresh air.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well, you brought it up, and I
- 14:48Speaker 3: want to know the answer this. Did the did the
- 14:50Speaker 3: ownership learn anything from this year? Right? Meaning after twenty
- 14:54Speaker 3: two they didn't really do anything. Fans were pissed. Cal
- 14:58Speaker 3: Rawley had to come out and say what he said,
- 15:00Speaker 3: I remember in twenty three and then oh no, I
- 15:01Speaker 3: didn't really say that, just kidding, right, And then this
- 15:05Speaker 3: year they go out and they make the trade for Suarez,
- 15:07Speaker 3: they make the trade for Nailor, they do some things
- 15:09Speaker 3: and they get I mean as close as you can
- 15:11Speaker 3: get to the World Series without making it. Did the
- 15:13Speaker 3: ownership of the Maritors learn anything that, hey, if we
- 15:16Speaker 3: just spend a little bit on this team, we might
- 15:18Speaker 3: actually make history.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I would think so, But again, you never know, how Like,
- 15:23Speaker 2: they make a lot of business decisions when it comes
- 15:26Speaker 2: to baseball, so you would think that they would look
- 15:28Speaker 2: at it and say, you know, you have to invest
- 15:31Speaker 2: in a product to get maximum output in terms of
- 15:34Speaker 2: your revenues that you want to generate. I think honestly,
- 15:39Speaker 2: them moving away from from their regional sports network and
- 15:44Speaker 2: not in just going straight to MLB and dealing with that,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I think that provides a little clarity.
- 15:50Speaker 4: But yeah, they again they have money.
- 15:53Speaker 2: This isn't a situation where they're really not. Every team
- 15:58Speaker 2: has money. It's whether or not you're on comfortable to
- 16:01Speaker 2: add a little bit more than maybe your your numbers,
- 16:03Speaker 2: or your algorithms or your budgets that you've used traditionally.
- 16:08Speaker 4: To add.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Just you know, go against it, get uncomfortable. What do
- 16:12Speaker 2: they always say about players that want to get better?
- 16:15Speaker 2: You have to, you know, you have to be willing
- 16:17Speaker 2: to get uncomfortable to learn to get better. I think
- 16:20Speaker 2: for these guys, for the ownership, Hey, you know what,
- 16:22Speaker 2: get uncomfortable a little bit, go in some territory where
- 16:25Speaker 2: you've never been before, add some money that you wouldn't
- 16:28Speaker 2: normally do.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Because it's right there. The core is right there. You know.
- 16:32Speaker 2: We talked to JP Crawford about Josh Naylor and what
- 16:35Speaker 2: it would mean to come back, and he was just adamant,
- 16:37Speaker 2: like we got to find a way to bring him
- 16:39Speaker 2: back because they know what the fit is. Okay, they've
- 16:42Speaker 2: never really done a four year, eighty million dollar contract
- 16:46Speaker 2: for somebody.
- 16:47Speaker 4: I think you got it. I mean I think you gotta.
- 16:49Speaker 2: You have to get You have to look at what
- 16:52Speaker 2: you need and value that more than what you're willing
- 16:56Speaker 2: to pay.
- 16:57Speaker 4: And I think that's the big thing.
- 16:58Speaker 2: At times they've been I think they've been resistant to
- 17:02Speaker 2: taking risks, risk averse. But to get to where you
- 17:05Speaker 2: want to go and to get to the World Series,
- 17:08Speaker 2: you have to take risks. I mean, yeah, you might
- 17:10Speaker 2: lose on a guy, or you might have a bad signing,
- 17:14Speaker 2: but you know, I think you don't really care at
- 17:17Speaker 2: this point.
- 17:17Speaker 4: You have to get back.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I mean, you cannot let what happened this year and
- 17:21Speaker 2: what this team did and what the fans were like
- 17:24Speaker 2: in that Game five against Detroit or Game five against
- 17:28Speaker 2: the Blue Jays. You can't let that go by. You
- 17:31Speaker 2: can't let it slip out of your hands. You have
- 17:33Speaker 2: to capitalize on the momentum you've built and come back
- 17:36Speaker 2: and show fans that, hey, we really believe in this group,
- 17:40Speaker 2: and then move forward. And I mean, if you want
- 17:42Speaker 2: to resign other guys, if you want to attract free agents,
- 17:46Speaker 2: then you have to show that you're ready to commit
- 17:48Speaker 2: to winning on a consistent basis beyond just draft, develop
- 17:52Speaker 2: and sign.
- 17:53Speaker 4: You want to be you know, you wanted to move
- 17:55Speaker 4: to a higher level.

- 19:01Speaker 3: Bryan, what's your favorite college team?
- 19:05Speaker 4: Montana Grizzlies.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Right here, it sounds like it's South Carolina with all
- 19:08Speaker 3: those cocks crowing behind you. I'm just saying it's crazy,
- 19:11Speaker 3: a little late.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I would like to kill those roosters and make them.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Okay, they're a little late. It's ten ten thirty out there.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Tell them they're a little late frat boy rooster. Yes,
- 19:27Speaker 3: all right. So now what was your favorite team baseball
- 19:29Speaker 3: team growing up?
- 19:30Speaker 4: Was it the Mariners?
- 19:32Speaker 2: No, Being in Montana, you're equidistant between the Mariners and
- 19:37Speaker 2: the Twins. And my family had family in Minneapolis. So
- 19:40Speaker 2: the first I think fifteen big league games I saw,
- 19:42Speaker 2: we're all in the Metrodome. Love Kirby Pucket more than
- 19:45Speaker 2: anything else.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Okay, So if if you were a fan of Kirby
- 19:48Speaker 3: Pucket and you saw him standing in an airport, would
- 19:51Speaker 3: you recognize him? I know he's passed away and I
- 19:52Speaker 3: love Kirby, but would you recognize him? By the way,
- 19:54Speaker 3: the correct answer was me. But other than that, go ahead.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I saw you play when I I was in college.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Actually it was in Minnesota. I saw a few games there.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I would recognize him, Yeah, I think. I mean he
- 20:09Speaker 2: was kind of unique looking because he was built like
- 20:11Speaker 2: a fire hydrant, you know, so it was like, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 2: you could, you would recognize him.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Okay. The reason I asked is I told this story
- 20:19Speaker 3: After Game five in Seattle. I was flying back to Orlando,
- 20:22Speaker 3: where I live, and Ken Griffy Junr Was standing next
- 20:25Speaker 3: to me and we chatted for thirty to forty five minutes,
- 20:28Speaker 3: and all these Seattle people had Griffy jerseys on and
- 20:31Speaker 3: Seattle Mariners this, and he stood there. Not one Seattle
- 20:34Speaker 3: person came up to him. It is that, Am I
- 20:38Speaker 3: the only one that's like, I cannot believe that nobody
- 20:40Speaker 3: recognized Ken Griffy Junior standing in the Seattle airport for
- 20:44Speaker 3: like forty five minutes.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Yeah, that's pretty amazing.
- 20:48Speaker 2: I mean I would think maybe it's just the awe
- 20:49Speaker 2: of seeing him, or maybe they were just terrified that
- 20:52Speaker 2: you were his bodyguard and they didn't want to get
- 20:54Speaker 2: near him.
- 20:54Speaker 4: I'm stunned by that.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Then again, you know what it's like, there are more
- 21:00Speaker 2: people recognize the dumpier guy in the T shirt than
- 21:04Speaker 2: they do probably James Paxton standing in an airport too,
- 21:08Speaker 2: So I it's I'm always kind of stunned by that.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I I always want I was planning on doing a
- 21:13Speaker 2: story on cal Rawley going to Costco because he went
- 21:17Speaker 2: to Costco one day to try and get some snacks
- 21:19Speaker 2: and you get a hot dog, and it didn't go
- 21:22Speaker 2: well for him, Like he got recognized right away and
- 21:24Speaker 2: he never did get the hot dog.
- 21:25Speaker 4: He was pretty disappointed.
- 21:26Speaker 2: So I wanted to go do a story on that,
- 21:28Speaker 2: like it's and I don't think and you know, like
- 21:30Speaker 2: you look at Callan, you don't think, oh, he's a
- 21:32Speaker 2: big league player. You look at him and think, oh,
- 21:34Speaker 2: probably a policeman or you know, construction guy.
- 21:37Speaker 4: But he gets recognized.
- 21:38Speaker 2: So I can't believe I'm going to text Junior and
- 21:40Speaker 2: make fun of him about that too.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Though, please please do that sounds like a sequel article. Yeah,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I would like to follow up.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Caw was just pissed because you can't get that one
- 21:48Speaker 3: fifty dollars fifty hot dog at Costco whatever it is.
- 21:51Speaker 4: He wanted the hot dog.
- 21:53Speaker 2: He wanted the pretzels, the pretzel bites with the peanut
- 21:55Speaker 2: butter inside him.
- 21:56Speaker 4: He loves those things.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I think he's popular enough now that he can tell
- 22:00Speaker 1: the klubby chef and he can whip that up for him.
- 22:04Speaker 1: But he's got the off season to work on his
- 22:06Speaker 1: menu for next year that he can request. He'll be
- 22:09Speaker 1: there for a long time. Ryan, good stuff man, great coverage,
- 22:12Speaker 1: and thanks for hopping on.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Don't freeze the death of montane okay?
- 22:15Speaker 4: Hell and I'll.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I'll you know if you if I send out a
- 22:18Speaker 2: picture of meat and fried chicken.
- 22:20Speaker 4: You'll know it's the roosters from next door.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And next time we have you on. If we don't
- 22:24Speaker 1: hear that, we know what happened.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Appreciate you man, talk soon, Thank you, snee.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Right, all right, so we've got the recap on umpires
- 22:38Speaker 1: in the league championship series. What's up? Oh, one hundred
- 22:44Speaker 1: and twenty one hundred and twelve calls missed?
- 22:47Speaker 3: Okay, and how many games? Six of the eleven.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Games had below league average correct call rates.
- 22:56Speaker 3: That's not good.
- 22:57Speaker 7: That's not good.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Can we get the score cards?
- 23:02Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 23:03Speaker 1: Well, I'm a specific at bat that I want to
- 23:05Speaker 1: look at with you guys.
- 23:07Speaker 5: I think they do it, but this should be the
- 23:09Speaker 5: best of the best, or whoever's had the highest scores
- 23:11Speaker 5: should be the ones doing it. It's like the way
- 23:13Speaker 5: you earn your way into that. But I don't think
- 23:15Speaker 5: they do so.
- 23:16Speaker 3: The guy, the guy a couple of years ago, I
- 23:17Speaker 3: had the highest scores for the year, got suspec got
- 23:20Speaker 3: kicked out for gambling. So that's true.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 23:22Speaker 1: But the thing is, their scoring system, KIP is not
- 23:25Speaker 1: just tied to how they do calling balls and strikes, right,
- 23:29Speaker 1: It's even like how they handle player relations right and
- 23:33Speaker 1: all of that. So I just think that there should
- 23:37Speaker 1: be a who's the top ten on the home plate rank?
- 23:40Speaker 1: And we've done this before, we talked about this, so
- 23:41Speaker 1: I want to I want to focus on a specific situation,
- 23:45Speaker 1: Geno Suarez against Chris Bassett. Bassett throws that seventy two
- 23:50Speaker 1: mile an hour curve called strike three to get Gino
- 23:54Speaker 1: in a big spot in Game seven. Let's run what
- 23:57Speaker 1: Gino said first, and then we'll show you why he
- 24:00Speaker 1: was pissed. So he said that was the same pitch
- 24:11Speaker 1: you called.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Ball, and then you didn't say that.
- 24:14Speaker 1: What did he say a little.
- 24:16Speaker 4: More than a little more.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Let's show the pitches. Here's the thing, he's actually wrong.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Both of them were strikes, Kip, I mean the ABS
- 24:25Speaker 1: system next year, if he challenges that, he loses.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Yeah, but I'm saying he was even further inside of
- 24:32Speaker 5: the last one. But that's the problem when if number two,
- 24:38Speaker 5: because he's compared it to his number two pitch, if
- 24:40Speaker 5: that number two pitch was called a ball, I would
- 24:42Speaker 5: be even more irate if I was Suarez on that one,
- 24:45Speaker 5: but the first one was called a strike and it
- 24:47Speaker 5: was full count. You should be kind of swinging at
- 24:48Speaker 5: that pitch anyways, But I remember doing that a bunch
- 24:52Speaker 5: where ball is on the on the black or right
- 24:55Speaker 5: on the outside of the zone, and I'm just like, hey,
- 24:57Speaker 5: is that as far as it goes? And then it
- 25:00Speaker 5: will be uh. He's like, yep, it'll be like literally
- 25:02Speaker 5: half the ball out from that and it'll be called
- 25:04Speaker 5: the ball. It's like you're a man of your words,
- 25:05Speaker 5: so you have these kind of conversations throughout the bat
- 25:08Speaker 5: with it, but you're just guys know their zones.
- 25:10Speaker 7: This is what we do. We like we put the.
- 25:12Speaker 5: Baseball from our t drills into the cages to every
- 25:15Speaker 5: at bat, we learn what the zone is. So we're
- 25:17Speaker 5: usually up on that and we allow a little gray area,
- 25:21Speaker 5: but we just want a consistent great area. If you're
- 25:23Speaker 5: going to give the inside all night, that's fine, but
- 25:26Speaker 5: just be on your your p's and q's on the
- 25:28Speaker 5: on the outside.
- 25:29Speaker 7: We won't want that to remain the name. So we
- 25:31Speaker 7: just want consistency.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I think, Okay, here here's a different side of this.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Maybe Kirk framed it better. Second one. Also, maybe the
- 25:41Speaker 3: umpire said to Johannio earlier, hey man, I missed that one.
- 25:45Speaker 3: We don't know. We only saw the end. Maybe said,
- 25:47Speaker 3: oh man, I missed that one. I need to get
- 25:49Speaker 3: that next time. But next one is three too, We
- 25:51Speaker 3: don't know that.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, two different pitches too, so they get perceived differently.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yes, and they both were strikes technically, yeah, they were
- 25:59Speaker 3: both strikes. Strikes. Yeah, I don't know. There's a million
- 26:04Speaker 3: ways to look at this. Some bars generally do a
- 26:05Speaker 3: good job. Am I looking forward to abs, absolutely, because
- 26:09Speaker 3: I can't wait to see who gets to tap their
- 26:10Speaker 3: head and who doesn't.
- 26:11Speaker 1: But in this case, he doesn't have an argument.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Wait, it doesn't because they were both strikes. If he
- 26:16Speaker 3: goes back and he looks at it now. Also, I
- 26:18Speaker 3: will say this, I don't know who does the little
- 26:20Speaker 3: dots on the little screen, because there's probably some college
- 26:22Speaker 3: kid that's like you were in college, eat a bunch
- 26:25Speaker 3: of gummy nerds and how it's from stack cast. Yeah,
- 26:28Speaker 3: but there's someone's got to be pressing the button.
- 26:31Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's that cast.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Because we used to have back back before stack cast,
- 26:36Speaker 3: we used to have a inside edge or whatever it's called.
- 26:39Speaker 3: There were literally we'd watched the thing and they chow
- 26:42Speaker 3: us where the dot was and We're like, damn, what
- 26:44Speaker 3: was this kid doing sitting up at three am in
- 26:45Speaker 3: his dorm room pressing the wrong spot and you're like,
- 26:48Speaker 3: that's not where it was.
- 26:49Speaker 1: That's different. Okay, it's auto now. But here's the thing.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Let's paint this picture next year, same exact spot. Okay.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Gino's up and that pitch is called the ball, the
- 26:57Speaker 1: second pitch of the Abu sweeper. Let's say the team
- 27:00Speaker 1: doesn't challenge it. Chris Bassett and company, they don't challenge it. Okay,
- 27:04Speaker 1: fast forward later in that IB called strike three, he's pissed.
- 27:07Speaker 1: The consistency doesn't go away, or the inconsistency doesn't go away,
- 27:11Speaker 1: because it's not judging every pitch. So if Gino's like,
- 27:16Speaker 1: what the hell challenge boom, you're wrong. That's a strike.
- 27:19Speaker 1: That's what it was. So it's not. If you want
- 27:22Speaker 1: that kind of consistency, you need abs on every pitch.
- 27:24Speaker 1: We're not getting that. Players didn't want that.
- 27:26Speaker 3: I don't want that either, Okay, So.
- 27:30Speaker 5: There and I was I was I misspoke earlier. So
- 27:33Speaker 5: he did call it a ball first. So that's why
- 27:34Speaker 5: as far as it's even more mad because it was
- 27:36Speaker 5: even more inside. And then that's why so I said,
- 27:39Speaker 5: he called it a strike earlier, but three to two. Uh,
- 27:43Speaker 5: it's a tough one.
- 27:44Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 27:44Speaker 5: It's a tough one to he's taken it because it
- 27:46Speaker 5: literally was just called the ball earlier in that I
- 27:48Speaker 5: bet so.
- 27:49Speaker 7: The inconsistency is what got to him.
- 27:50Speaker 5: The ABS is to remove the inconsistency and just to
- 27:53Speaker 5: get the call right. I think that's all we want
- 27:55Speaker 5: to really, all we care about is getting the call right.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Does Gino really know the exact spot where that's landing
- 28:01Speaker 1: when he's taking that the.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Same pitch he was, It was not the same pitch
- 28:04Speaker 3: the Empire was right though.
- 28:06Speaker 1: It was a sweeper and then a curve, but.
- 28:08Speaker 3: It wasn't the same spot either. They didn't even touch
- 28:11Speaker 3: each other.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yeah they're close, but no, not.
- 28:13Speaker 3: That's a spot. That's like saying I'm close to Canada
- 28:16Speaker 3: right now? How close that? I'm not that close, but
- 28:19Speaker 3: I'm close.
- 28:19Speaker 1: I mean, you're closer than Asia is true. How tough
- 28:24Speaker 1: is that pitch? Specifically during that ab when he unleashes
- 28:28Speaker 1: that very rare epic curveball, I.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Mean, it's you just you have a hard hope he
- 28:34Speaker 3: throws it for a ball.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Right, that ninety four looks like ninety nine then because
- 28:41Speaker 5: you just got to get your weight back on both
- 28:43Speaker 5: or you just got to get your hands ready for
- 28:44Speaker 5: the fastball.
- 28:45Speaker 7: So it really does add it to the other pitches too.
- 28:47Speaker 1: But I mean he went sweeper, sinker, sinker, cutter, sinker,
- 28:53Speaker 1: and those were all obviously. Actually the sweeper was was
- 28:57Speaker 1: seventy three ish and then curveball. Good sequencing.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Yeah's different sweeper and a slider technically nothing horizontal.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Okay, more horizontal break slur.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a slur. They just invented some guys. Listen,
- 29:19Speaker 3: you know this. Some guys had more horizontal on their slider.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Some guy has more more vertical. But they just wanted
- 29:24Speaker 3: to come up with a different name so they could
- 29:26Speaker 3: categorize it. And by the way, I said this when
- 29:28Speaker 3: I did my broadcast, can we stop calling a high
- 29:30Speaker 3: two seamer a sinker? It's not. It's just a two seamer.
- 29:33Speaker 3: He's just trying to get run across the zone at
- 29:35Speaker 3: the top because as you know, kip high sinkers, they
- 29:38Speaker 3: don't sink. They only sink over the fence usually, so
- 29:41Speaker 3: you're not trying to they're not trying to make the
- 29:42Speaker 3: ball start at your chest and go to your thighs.
- 29:45Speaker 3: They're just trying to start at your chest and run
- 29:46Speaker 3: it across the zone. So can we stop calling that
- 29:48Speaker 3: a sinker. It's not a sinker. It's a two seemer.
- 29:51Speaker 4: I'm with you.
- 29:51Speaker 5: They're just trying to start it at the barrel and
- 29:53Speaker 5: go to the end of the bet exactly.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Wait, so then, do you want stat cast to change.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Whoever calls whoever calls this pitch right here a sinker
- 30:04Speaker 3: when it's really George Kirby was doing it at ninety
- 30:07Speaker 3: eight and he was just throwing two seamers that would
- 30:08Speaker 3: start here and end up over here instead of the
- 30:12Speaker 3: four seamer, which stays truer. Right, that's not a sinker,
- 30:15Speaker 3: because a sinker, you're really you're literally trying to get
- 30:17Speaker 3: the ball to go down, right, He's not trying to
- 30:19Speaker 3: get the ball to go down down, He's trying to
- 30:20Speaker 3: get the ball to go from here to here. So
- 30:22Speaker 3: that's not a sinker. That's a two seamer.
- 30:25Speaker 1: So should we label all of them two seamers or
- 30:27Speaker 1: do we still have sinkers if they're.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Yes, some guys, but some guys throw one seams sinkers right,
- 30:33Speaker 3: So I mean, you know this, kip. Some guys throw
- 30:35Speaker 3: the one seamer that just goes straight down right. Some
- 30:37Speaker 3: guys thow two seamers that has more horizontal and down.
- 30:40Speaker 3: And then some guys were never able to get the
- 30:42Speaker 3: ball to go down, so they just throw a ball
- 30:44Speaker 3: that goes this way.
- 30:46Speaker 7: I like those guys usually, Yeah.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Those are usually the ones. If it's a righty on
- 30:49Speaker 3: the lefty, those are usually the ones you could get
- 30:51Speaker 3: that you could go from here and just go fuck.
- 30:53Speaker 7: Yep, lefties look forward to those guys.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Yes, well this this this will be the last four
- 31:02Speaker 1: to seven games in Major League history that don't have
- 31:07Speaker 1: a challenge system or abs involvement. In the future, we
- 31:11Speaker 1: might have autoballs and strikes for everything, but this will
- 31:14Speaker 1: be the last time that machinery is not involved with this, kip.
- 31:18Speaker 5: So kidding, question for you, is there a deal with
- 31:22Speaker 5: it where it's like we're going to give this a
- 31:23Speaker 5: five year, ten year run or is this just like
- 31:25Speaker 5: implemented and this is the rule now, or is it
- 31:27Speaker 5: just like is there any kind of trial period.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Deal implemented. Here's the deal. They feel like they tested
- 31:33Speaker 1: enough everywhere and that this is the next step in
- 31:37Speaker 1: terms of calling balls and strikes. I think there's still
- 31:40Speaker 1: a chance that in the future all of this is
- 31:45Speaker 1: called be a machinery, but I think we're far away
- 31:49Speaker 1: from that. I think this is going to be a
- 31:51Speaker 1: roaring success and people are going to like it, and
- 31:53Speaker 1: baseball's a business, and they're going to like the fact
- 31:55Speaker 1: that the challenge system creates a lot more in interesting
- 32:00Speaker 1: content for everyone, for umps, for teams, for fans. Right,
- 32:04Speaker 1: everyone can get involved on that. So I actually think
- 32:07Speaker 1: that it's going to be so successful that if anything,
- 32:10Speaker 1: maybe we because what did we say, we have two
- 32:13Speaker 1: and most of us were pissed that we want three,
- 32:15Speaker 1: So maybe, if anything, they added three or four whatever
- 32:17Speaker 1: it is. But you just give teams more of the
- 32:19Speaker 1: ability to challenge versus going on every pitch.
- 32:23Speaker 7: Yeah, if you win, right, you wouldn't.
- 32:29Speaker 4: You keep it?
- 32:31Speaker 1: Yeah? But but no like oh, we're going to try
- 32:34Speaker 1: this for a few years or anything. They just kind
- 32:36Speaker 1: of go with everything where this is the new rule.
- 32:38Speaker 1: But yeah, if it somehow was a disaster and like
- 32:41Speaker 1: the machine was wrong or something like that, then the
- 32:43Speaker 1: next season they could take it away or do something different.
- 32:46Speaker 1: No commitments, no commitment
